COVID-19 MAKES ITS MARK

W

elcome to the April issue of ECN, and I trust that you’re all keeping well in these unsettling times. In last month’s comment, I alluded to the early impact of COVID-19 and some of the initial consequences – including supply chain disruption and exhibition postponements – but I don’t think many of us quite anticipated the overall impact that this pandemic would end up having here on British soil. In the four weeks that have passed since our last issue, we’ve seen unprecedented scenes across the UK in our bid to combat the coronavirus – and, writing this from my home office, with ECN playing its part and heeding advice to limit social contact wherever possible – it’s clearly taking a toll on the electrical contracting sector too. Despite aspirations to continue ‘business as usual’, with social distancing measures being encouraged (and potentially enforced by the time you’re reading this), there are significant implications for electrical contractors up and down the country; and those I’ve spoken with have all been affected to some degree, with many raising concerns about what the future holds.

On March 17 – just a few days before pubs, restaurants and other venues were ordered to close by the Government – the ECA, BESA and Select launched an online survey in an attempt to gain an early picture of the anticipated business impact in the engineering services sector. The initial responses reveal that 93% of businesses are concerned, with just over half of engineering services respondents encountering delays and disruptions to current projects. For more on this story, turn to page 7 for the full report. Meanwhile, EI Live! 2020 – which is run by our sister publication, Essential Install – made the decision to postpone its originally planned dates in April, and the show will now take place at the Farnborough International Exhibition Centre on October 19-20. Further details can also be found in this month’s news section. Rest assured that the ECN team will continue to bring you the latest breaking news across the industry each and every month. With many of you now self-isolating, now could be the ideal time to make use of our digital offerings too. We’ll have daily updates at our website and via our Twitter account – full details of which can be found at the bottom of the page. Enjoy the issue, and take care.

INDUSTRY NEWS ENGINEERING SERVICES FIRMS REACT TO CORONAVIRUS Over nine in 10 engineering services businesses (93%) say they are ‘concerned or very concerned’ about the impact of coronavirus on their business over the next six months, according to initial responses to a major new ECA / BESA / SELECT engineering services survey. Over 60% of respondents are ‘very concerned’ about coronavirus, while perhaps remarkably, 1% of respondents suggested they were ‘unconcerned’. Half of the engineering services respondents (51%) said that they have already encountered ‘delays and disruptions to current projects’, with 61% of larger businesses reporting current disruption. Around half of respondents already report ‘delays and disruption to future work’. Over half of respondents (53%) said they were now ‘preparing business contingency plans’ as a result of developments, a figure which rose to 71% in larger businesses. The most commonly cited business activity in response to coronavirus to date is ‘reducing business travel’ and ‘asking or allowing staff to work from home’, followed by ‘business contingency planning.’ However, around 10% of businesses say they have ‘shut down at certain premises or sites’, and over 10% of respondents also say they are ‘updating their contracts’ and ‘looking into alternative suppliers’. ECA CEO, Steve Bratt, comments, “Coronavirus is already having a significant impact across our industry

and wider society. ECA is aware that many businesses are already encountering work delays, site access issues and cancellations. “We are actively working with industry bodies and Government to represent the concerns and interests of the industry. Key to this is ensuring that Government understands that early, significant and practically useful support is needed to help our industry with cashflow, but also to provide as much certainty as possible”. BESA Director of Legal and Commercial, Debbie Petford, notes, “Though these are just preliminary findings, the sheer scale of the disruption to the sector is alarming. We will be working around the clock to provide as much guidance as possible to our members, and calling on the government to keep providing additional stimulus and support as the situation evolves, to ensure businesses make it to other side of this crisis in one piece.” SELECT Managing Director, Alan Wilson, adds, “This is clearly an extremely worrying time for SELECT members and the wider industry. Each day brings fresh concerns, with the threat of shutdown still looming large. “Like ECA and BESA, we are taking proactive measures to help electrical professionals address their concerns at this unprecedented moment in history. The knock-on effects of this pandemic could be catastrophic for the industry, particularly

when it comes to payments, so it’s essential that vital cash flow continues.” At the time of press, the survey had received over 600 responses from across the industry, including nearly 180 from larger businesses in the sector. The

coronavirus situation is fast-moving and further survey responses are expected to show increasing impact on the industry in the days ahead. ECA, eca.co.uk

INDUSTRY NEWS REACTION TO EV BUDGET PLEDGE Responding to the Budget pledge of £500m for the rollout of new electric car charging points, Michael Kenyon, Technical Lead at electrical safety expert, Bureau Veritas, comments: “The Chancellor’s announcement to invest a further £500m in the rollout of new rapid electric charging hubs so drivers are never more than 30 miles from being able to charge their car will come as welcome news for motorists and the electrical contracting industry. “The investment reflects the UK’s commitment to meeting its Net Zero emissions pledge through cleaner transport and will include a rapid charging fund to help businesses with the cost of connecting fast charge points to the electricity grid. To target spending from this fund effectively, the Office for Low Emission Vehicles is expected to complete a comprehensive electric vehicle charging infrastructure review. “To create a world-class charging infrastructure, businesses will need to ensure they take a ‘quality first’ approach to installing and connecting these fast charging points, prioritising electrical safety for users and the general public through regular inspection and maintenance. For electrical contractors it represents a huge opportunity for growth in this fast-evolving area. However, the need to upskill, build technical expertise and specialise in this area cannot be overstated.

“This includes deciphering new rules set out in the Amendment 1 to BS 7671:2018, published by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) just last month, detailing changes designed to make the installation of

electrical vehicles charging points quicker and easier, and cheaper for both installers and consumers.” Bureau Veritas, bureauveritas.co.uk

TAMLITE LIGHTING CUTS 10,000KG OF PLASTIC WASTE Tamlite Lighting has announced that it has eradicated more than half a million plastic bags from entering the supply chain over the last 12 months. The independent lighting manufacturer says the move to reduce its reliance on plastic, which has saved the equivalent of 10,000kg of waste in just one year, is part of its ongoing circular economy strategy. The project has seen the company invest in alternative sustainable packaging materials, such as recycled cardboard corners or shredded cardboard. In order to make such substantial savings, plastic packaging has been removed from a number of products, including LED batten and flat panel lighting ranges. With sales of these involving very substantial quantities of fittings every year, the savings rapidly add up. In addition to this, Tamlite is taking steps to ensure that all new products are plastic free, including its new downlight products. “We are witnessing an enormous global shift in attitudes in tackling climate change and protecting natural resources,” says Tamlite’s Managing Director, John Allden. “As a responsible manufacturer, we take pride in leading by example, so it’s incumbent upon us to drive positive change within our operations and processes in a bid to reduce any negative impacts on the environment. “Our aim is to build a circular economy for the lighting sector. We have a responsibility to ensure our processes and products are in line with our commitment to ensuring a healthy planet for all. This is why reducing our reliance on plastic is an important part of our strategy and will help us make real strides in being more sustainable. “We have always acted responsibly with regards to recycling, but we felt it was paramount to remove any non-essential plastic, as well as other non-recyclable materials, from our products. Making this change has had significant benefits, reduces our reliance on landfill, and most importantly, is helping reduce our impact on the planet.”

Following the launch of Schneider Electric’s online specification tool for designers, specifiers and consulting engineers in 2019, the company is now reporting that over 1,000 specifications have been created with the tool. The free online tool aims to make the process of generating specification for tenders quicker, simpler and much easier. It provides a platform for users to create and store their specifications, and instantly access all the information they need on solutions and digital architectures. Available through the company’s specifier/consultant mySchneider Partner Portal, the platform allows users to create specifications from scratch or pre-existing templates. The platform provides simple functionality, allowing its users to take product information from a vast library of industry solutions and quickly drop it into their specification templates. “The new tool brings M&E Design into the digital age,” says Andrew Wakeley, Customer Channel Marketing Manager in the UK for Consultants/Specifiers at Schneider Electric. “Our platform seeks to streamline the process while also being educational. In design, speed is of the essence and the specification tool helps its users get their ideas out the door quickly while giving them back precious time to grow their business and learn. We’re delighted to have reached 1,000 specifications and we expect that number to grow exponentially in the coming years. INDUSTRY NEWS MORE NEEDED TO ENCOURAGE FEMALE APPRENTICES A group of industry bodies have praised the recent rise in female electrical apprenticeships but say more should be done to encourage other women to pick up the tools. The Scottish Joint Industry Board (SJIB), Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT), Select and Unite the Union all welcomed recent figures which showed that 13 female apprentices are currently training to be electricians in 2019-2020, compared to seven in 2018-2019. This increase in female applicants overall in 2019/2020 saw 70% of those applying being taken on to the Electrical Installation Modern Apprenticeship. “In the month that we celebrated both Scottish Apprenticeship Week and International Women’s Day, it’s heartening to see more young women than ever taking up electrical apprenticeships in Scotland,” says Fiona Harper, The Secretary of the SJIB and Director of Employment and Skills at Select. “It’s also heartening to see that all these women are there on merit. Like all apprentices, they were required to pass an assessment before they were accepted onto the apprenticeship programme, and each demonstrated the aptitude and competence to do so. There is clearly a growing realisation among young women

that being an electrical professional is a viable career. “The rise of renewables and the next generation of electrical technology is

making our industry more attractive to would-be electricians of both genders, so it is now up to all of us to tap into this enthusiasm and ensure we keep a

SUPPLY CHAIN PLAYERS BACK NEW DATA POOL A total of 25 leading manufacturers and wholesalers have signed up as Founder Members of EDATA, a new product data pool that is ‘by the industry, for the industry’. EDATA is the latest strategic initiative from the Electrical Distributors’ Association (EDA) under its EDA Data Services banner. E-commerce and digital transformation are inextricably linked to the availability of the highest quality product data, and EDATA offers manufacturers a central ‘single source of truth’ resource for uploading product information, technical data and images which wholesalers can download and serve up on their customer-facing e-commerce channels. Signing up for an initial three-year term, founders have committed to uploading and downloading product data to kick-start the EDATA service. A group made up of representatives from each of the founders will steer the development of EDATA, which will be accessed through annual subscription, with the costs and benefits shared by all who subscribe. Once up and running, EDATA will be opened up to both EDA and non-EDA manufacturers and wholesalers. Margaret Fitzsimons, CEO of the EDA, comments, “It’s fantastic news that these EDA members and affiliated members are backing this new venture and helping us get it off the ground, because it is much needed. Industry-owned data pools are widespread in other markets and sectors; so in this respect, the UK is somewhat behind. EDATA gives the UK’s electrotechnical supply chain the opportunity to say goodbye to

the heavy workloads created by processing data through multiple channels and hello to enhanced ecommerce infrastructure.” Richard Appleton, General Manager of EDA Data Services, adds, “Digitalisation is an unstoppable force, and most EDA members will be developing a digital or multi-channel sales strategy. EDATA will overcome one of the major barriers by providing a single source of rich, ecommerce-friendly product data. Manufacturers benefit too, being

able to syndicate their data through a single channel while retaining full control of how their products and brand are presented. EDATA will hold information in three categories: Manufacturer Master Data, the core data needed to identify a product; Digital Assets, such as images and data sheets; and Technical Attributes, including dimensions, suitability and performance characteristics.

National Electrotechnical Training (NET) has appointed Paul Wilson as a Technical Development Manager. A fully qualified electrician, he will provide technical support, development, auditing and monitoring for NET’s licensed centres. Kohler Uninterruptible Power has appointed Rob Taylor as its new UK Hardware Sales Director. He has worked extensively across sales and leadership positions for the past 21 years.

COVER STORY

NEW PREMISES FOR DETA Deta Electrical has come a long way since its inception in 1958; substantially developing its core wiring and electrical accessory ranges, and more recently relocating to a 70,000 sq-ft, purpose-built facility. Deta explains more about this exciting move.

L

eading electrical manufacturer, Deta Electrical, has achieved significant growth in recent years following the introduction of multiple new product ranges and the acquisition of several complementary brands, including Brackenheath Lighting, Briticent Site Electrics, Channel Safety Systems, SMJ Electrical, Stephen Glover and Top Tubes Electrical. Deta is a well-established, leading supplier to the UK electrical wholesale sector, offering high quality and value for money wiring, lighting and electrical accessories. Its innovative approach to product design and development and the acquisition of complementary brands in recent years has been paramount to the growth and success of the company. In January 2020, Deta undertook a fundamental restructuring of its business, integrating the Brackenheath, Briticent, SMJ and Deta TTE (formerly Stephen Glover and Top Tubes Electrical) brands under the Deta umbrella. In support and having outgrown its longstanding premises in central Luton, Deta took the decision to relocate to a new cutting-edge facility on the Panattoni Park Luton development. Efficiency and simplicity have been a major influence in Deta’s decision to relocate, and the brand integration and new facility will serve to revolutionise Deta’s distribution and head office function for future years to come, streamlining and completing the customer journey from start to finish. Customers will now benefit from the dynamic effectiveness of dealing with one fully integrated business, from technical and customer support through to distribution, all based and managed from one purpose-built facility.

Cutting-edge facility Covering an impressive 70,000 sq-ft and in excess of 11,000 pallet locations to support its extensive stock holding, Deta’s new head office and distribution centre is located in a prominent position at junction 11A of the M1 and benefits from excellent road connections, ensuring Deta is well positioned to maintain its excellent delivery service across the UK. Office space of 10,000 sq-ft, incorporating a large open plan workspace, meeting facilities and a substantial showroom, provides an ideal setup for the ongoing development and

growth of each of its core brands. It is a facility to be rightfully proud of, and one that will be actively used to showcase its ever-expanding range of products. Gerry Barnett, Deta’s Managing Director, comments, “This is an exciting move for the company and has been pivotal in enabling us to restructure and integrate our businesses, as well as simplify our processes for the benefit of our valued customers. “We are delighted to be working in a new, modern and cutting-edge facility. Our long-standing employees are committed and passionate about what they do, and I am proud to be able to offer the Deta team an incredible working environment that is duly deserved.”

Deta’s new image Relocation presented the opportunity for Deta to refresh its overall image, to support the integration of its brands and reflect its position within the 21st century as a leading supplier of wiring, lighting and electrical accessories. In Q2 2020, Deta will unveil its new company logo, packaging, point of sale and general literature with consistency, simplification and its valued customers in mind. A key development will include a catalogue re-design, combining and marketing all brands under the Deta umbrella. Deta has also pledged to increase its digital footprint and social presence, building an online community for better communication with contractors. A new and improved website is also on the horizon with the intention of simplifying the customer experience digitally, combining multiple websites across all brands into one user-friendly website.

New visions Whilst Deta is committed to maintaining its position as the number one choice for specification products in the new build segment, ongoing product and business development outside this segment remains a key business objective. Deta has set its sights on becoming the number one destination of choice amongst contractors for a broader range of everyday products, whilst continuing to embrace new technologies and responding to the everchanging needs of the market. With additional warehouse capacity, the capability to stock products is more vital than ever for Deta. Its major investment into lighting ranges, expanding product

offering and completing gaps in the education, hospitality, industrial and residential sectors are a key focus for Deta’s future.

Core values “Deta has set its sights on becoming the number one destination of choice amongst contractors for a broader range of everyday products.”

Deta’s core values of quality products, ease of installation, service and support to its valued customers remains at the forefront of its vision. Deta is fully committed to maximising the customer experience whilst continuing to bring to market its evergrowing range of market leading products, designed with the installer and end user in mind. Barnett concludes, “The re-brand of Deta is essentially a ‘moment in time’ opportunity. The relocation has been a chance to bring our image into the 21st century and absorb the best features and benefits of the brands, now under the renowned Deta umbrella. “These fundamental changes have formed the basis for our new vision to become the number one destination of choice, for a broader range of everyday products. We would like to thank our customers for their continuous support and look forward to the future of Deta in this next exciting phase.”  Deta Electrical, deta.co.uk

CONTRACT NEWS ENERGY-SAVING MAKEOVER FOR BREWERS Goodlight, the UK LED lighting manufacturer, has announced that Brewers Decorator Centres are seeing a visible saving in energy consumption after installing high performance, energy efficient LED lighting solutions. A total of 27,600 sq-ft of showrooms are now illuminated with products from the Goodlight LED range, giving energy savings of 70-80% per fitting, reducing carbon footprint, saving maintenance costs and enhancing the customer experience. Brewers, a specialist in decorating materials, stocks a wide range of wallpapers, paints, varnishes and soft furnishings, supplying decorating products to tradespeople and the general public. The first five stores to upgrade to Goodlight LED lighting were Haslemere, Lewisham, London Victoria, Sevenoaks and Surbiton. Energy hungry fluorescent tubes and metal halide high bays were replaced across the stores with Goodlight G5 LED battens, GX1 LED high bays and Eco LED panels. Brewers Decorator Centres install high performance energy efficient LED lighting from Goodlight

In addition to the significant energy cost savings, the guaranteed five year, 50,000 hour service life of Goodlight LED luminaires produces considerable maintenance cost savings, compared with the rated 20,000 hour life of typical fluorescent tubes. Paul Dennington, Premises Manager at Brewers, says, “Since installation, our running costs have reduced and the lighting levels across our sales areas have improved dramatically. The Goodlight LED lighting provides bright, welcoming illumination allowing customers to accurately evaluate our products. We are certainly considering future installations.”

Goodlight supplied Brewers with 4-foot 40W G5 LED battens as a direct drop-in replacement for the outdated twin 4-ft T8 fluorescent battens drawing 72W in its Haslemere store, producing electricity cost savings of 80%. The Lewisham and Surbiton showrooms were fitted with reliable GX1 high bays, in 120W, offering up to 125Lm/W; while the Sevenoaks and London Victoria stores benefit from ultra-thin, 600mm square Eco LED ceiling panels that draw just 40W. FISH ISLAND DEVELOPMENT ENTERS FINAL PHASE Mechanical and electrical building services contractor, J S Wright, has secured a contract worth more than £3 million for the third and final phase of a ground-breaking estate regeneration in London’s Docklands. The company will supply and install all the mechanical services for 165 one to three-bedroom private and affordable apartments at Neptune Wharf in Fish Island Village, Hackney Wick. The phase three apartments will be spread across five buildings with wharf-inspired designs inspired by the warehouse typology of the area’s industrial past. J S Wright was awarded the contract by developer Hill, in association with housing association Peabody, following its completion of the 423 private and affordable homes in the first two phases of the canalside development. The work will involve installing a low-temperature hot water heating system to deliver energy to the apartments from an energy centre already built by J S Wright in the basement car park for phases one and two of the development. Low temperature hot water will be delivered through associated pipework to heat interface units that in turn will feed underfloor heating within each apartment. A boosted cold-water system will also be fitted for the domestic hot and cold-water supply. J S Wright will also install energy efficient mechanical ventilation heat recovery systems that will use the outgoing air from the apartments to heat incoming fresh air, as well as equip all the units and communal areas with dry risers and domestic sprinklers for fire protection. J S Wright was due to start work on site in March, with completion scheduled for May 2021. J S Wright, jswright.co.uk A CGI of what phase three of Neptune Wharf at Fish Island Village will look like

THORN LIGHTING SCORES AT GOL CENTRE CARDIFF Thorn Lighting has provided a full LED refurbishment for the pitch lighting at Cardiff’s Gol Centre, a five-a-side football complex which features 3G pitches and hosts almost 300 teams every week. Initially, the brief was to light one of the pitches so that the results could be assessed before commencing work on the rest of the site. The lighting solution that Thorn provided proved incredibly popular, and the refurbishment took on momentum for the rest of the installation. The existing 400W metal halide fittings highlighting the 11 pitches were constantly blowing out, requiring lamp replacement every three months and failing to provide bright enough illumination for the pitches. The challenge was to ensure that the new LED fittings would have an adequate amount of light spread across the pitch using the same point-for-point positions for the replacements. Thorn’s Areaflood Pro floodlights mounted on eight metre columns proved to be the perfect solution for the application, averaging around 100 lux; where previously, less than 50 lux was achieved in the centre of the pitches. Areaflood Pro is a general-purpose area floodlight with superior optical performance and optimal light control of 0cd at 90 degrees, with minimal spill light, for the comfort of users and spectators. The compact proportions and reduced weight of the floodlights avoids additional structural costs in retrofit installations and maintenance is kept to a minimum thanks to 100,000 hours rated lifetime on both drivers and LEDs. There is over 100W reduction per luminaire and, with 46 luminaires installed, this equates to a total of a 4,600W reduction across the site. Thorn Lighting, thornlighting.com

KEY ISSUE

SPARKING INNOVATION IN THE EV SECTOR Malte Frohberg, Head of Automotive Product Management, Low Frequency division at Huber+Suhner, looks at some of the challenges arising in electric vehicles – and presents some potential solutions to keep the sector on track.

W

ith increasing consumer demand for electric vehicles (EVs), manufacturers face the challenge of creating high-performing vehicles on a mass scale. While high-power charging infrastructure is essential, there is also a vital demand on the performance of high voltage (HV) distribution within the EV in order to efficiently conduct, hold, distribute and use electric power after charging. Huber+Suhner has years of experience in addressing the challenges of powering EVs and delivering high voltage solutions to EV customers worldwide. Addressing several EV requirements, the company appreciates that a coordinated system of integrated solutions is the way forward for electric vehicles.

Resisting current issues The number of EVs on the road is increasing as businesses work towards a more fuel-efficient workforce to reduce costs and maintain sustainable values. However, as consumer demand rises and enterprises roll out more EV fleets to meet targets, EV technology faces the challenge of delivering resilient performance. To withstand the high voltage nature of the vehicle, EV operating systems are known to deteriorate rapidly, leaving transport susceptible to damages. Such issues are especially prevalent under harsh conditions such as mechanical abrasion, weather, moisture and temperature when travelling; elements that are unavoidable in transit. The inefficiencies that failures such as this cause in EVs is disruptive to travel and has become a salient issue across industry sectors as they struggle to sustain satisfactory performance levels. Damages inflicted by poor EV cabling across entire fleets can prove costly, and the reduction of the vehicle’s running and charging performance can interrupt business operations, costing businesses time and money. This is a rising issue, and manufacturers must combat this by implementing performance-enhancing innovations to their models. This is the only way to deliver efficient and reliable

20 | April 2020

Key Issue.indd 20

EV vehicles in order to stay competitive on the market. Technical innovations that effectively and evenly distribute the HV through all EV components, means the vehicle can run more safely and with stronger resilience. The Radox modular High Voltage Distribution Unit 2nd Generation (mHDVU Gen.2), developed by Huber+Suhner, offers just this; a specialised solution to increase the longevity of EVs in the commercial sector.

The driving force of the solution The implementation of end-to-end interconnected systems which use high voltage cables can eliminate the concerns surrounding shortage and failure in entire EV fleets. In the development of the Radox system, Huber+Suhner has combined cutting-edge technology to ensure consistent performance levels over the lifespan of the vehicle. By utilising its High Voltage Distribution Unit (HDVU), safety and efficiency can be guaranteed with the ability to withstand heavy duty application. With the average HDVU technology being able to manage 400-650 Volts DC, the Radox mHDVU can carry up to 800 Volts DC. The increased capability roll-out will be housed in lightweight aluminium, making the solution even more cost effective for customers. This makes the

“EV operating systems are known to deteriorate rapidly, leaving transport susceptible to damages.”

electricalcontractingnews.com

Huber+Suhner HDVU the leading solution in the industry, and the most effective one in extreme cases of heavy usage in harsh environments, e.g., EMC protection, etc. By eliminating the likelihood of cable damage, the Radox HDVU can better serve customer needs, saving companies significant amounts in repair and delay costs. The Radox mHDVU Gen.2 is also quality assured. Its in-built weight and space saving solution makes for compact installation without contributing to increased fuel consumption, whilst its housing is certified with the International Protection (IP) marking, guaranteeing its effectiveness in protecting against dust, moisture and accidental contact intrusions. Such features are invaluable to any large-scale business with a high EV demand, ensuring that reliable and sturdy operating systems are in place to allow for uninterrupted journeys. The HDVU is available in two versions for different uses: 500 Volts DC, covering all voltage levels up to 500 Volts DC; and the 800 Volts DC variant, covering the voltage level between 500 and 800 Volts. Huber+Suhner’s engineering service allows for solutions to be provided to customers rapidly and with exact precision, and the communication between its engineers and customers ensures that the solution is suitable and correct.

Powering EVs for the future The Radox mHDVU Gen.2 is proven to be a resilient solution for the requirements of EVs. The configurable nature of this modular technology is a great benefit and contributor to this, with the box being able to fit among any existing systems due to its OEM compatibility and complete interoperability. In case additional functions and components are required, HVDUs can also be designed to the exact needs and dimensions a customer would need, resulting in a fully customised HVDU. EV technology is ever advancing, and innovation is needed to help the industry sustain high performance under high demand. Huber+Suhner offers this by way of its Radox HDVUs, along with other systems, providing complete solutions to overcome industry challenges and improve overall performance to benefit businesses worldwide.  Huber+Suhner, hubersuhner.com

PROJECT FOCUS

BUILDINGS OF THE FUTURE The Scottish Government has announced new climate emergency projects that seek to improve performance in buildings old and new. ECN takes an in-depth look and explains how Schneider Electric will be involved.

A

t the beginning of March, Ivan McKee, the Scottish Trade Minister, announced funding for two new climate projects. The projects will demonstrate businesses, academic and public sector collaboration in transitioning the country to a low carbon economy and will be spearheaded by the University of Edinburgh and the University of Glasgow in collaboration with Schneider Electric. Following the Scottish Government’s £500,000 climate emergency collaboration project investment, the two largest universities in the country have been tasked with improving existing and future building’s performance with Schneider Electric’s smart building technologies.

Improving building design The University of Edinburgh’s project, titled ‘Building capacity for zero and low carbon innovation in construction and the built environment’, will aim to improve the way buildings of the future are designed and built to reduce the impact on the climate. It also wishes to demonstrate that a 25% energy reduction in peak demand can be achieved by advanced analytics of building performance. Project partners will work together to improve the way buildings are designed and constructed in the future to minimise their impact on the climate. They will also develop and test tools that reduce emissions by improving the energy performance of buildings once they become occupied. Dave Gorman, Director for Social Responsibility and Sustainability at the University of Edinburgh, comments, “The severity of the threat posed by climate change and the urgency with which responses are needed cannot be overstated. As one of the biggest global emitters of carbon, emissions from construction and the built environment must be significantly reduced if we are to reach net zero emissions in Scotland by 2045.

22 | April 2020

Project Focus – Schneider.indd 22

“One of the major challenges is not only how we build in the future, but how we reduce carbon emissions from existing housing stock.”

“The public sector has an important role to play in leading this transition and this is the challenge that we and our partners will address through this ambitious project, by developing innovative solutions and fostering effective and sustained partnership working”.

Predicted energy savings The announcement was made in Glasgow at a tenement property in the city where a high-tech, green retrofit will be evaluated to understand how to reduce carbon emissions from existing housing stock. Project leaders predict there is the potential for energy savings of between 75% and 90%. The University of Edinburgh project aims to increase capacity for zero and low carbon innovation in construction and the built environment. David Evans, Schneider Electric’s Education Segment Lead, notes, “We are delighted to be part of this project that will help define the future of smart buildings in Scotland. We have two priorities: first, we will look at how buildings technologies can be applied to new build projects to minimise the carbon burden of estate expansion; and secondly, we need to look at how technology can reduce carbon emissions from existing buildings.”

electricalcontractingnews.com

Reducing emissions from existing buildings Speaking at the launch, Ivan McKee explained, “We are facing a global climate emergency, and one of the major challenges is not only how we build in the future, but how we reduce carbon emissions from existing housing stock. “As these projects demonstrate, innovation plays a key part in this and will help us reach our ambitious, world-leading target to reach net-zero by 2045. We continue to engage with public bodies, businesses, communities and individuals at every opportunity to address the challenge we all face.” Professor Kenneth Gibb, Director of the UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence and the academic lead for the University of Glasgow project, adds, “We are delighted to make a potentially big contribution to addressing the climate emergency in Scotland through SFC funding for this important project. “Older housing is a key source of the carbon challenge, especially our pre-1919 tenements. This demonstration project allows us to both learn about this particular form of retrofit and to assess how to scale up and provide replicable solutions across the range of Glasgow tenements.”  Schneider Electric, se.com/uk

INTERVIEW

FROM GARAGE START-UP TO GLOBAL PLAYER As lighting controls manufacturer, BEG, celebrates 45 years in business, Friedrich Brück, its Managing Director and Founder, opens up in this exclusive interview – and explains how a major fire in 1979 nearly cost him everything.

Q:

How did you get the   company started?

Friedrich Brück: At the beginning of the 1970s, I headed up the German branch of a French battery manufacturer. One day, a customer came to me with an emergency light for which he needed something quite specific. My employer felt that the volume required was far too small, but the customer’s requirement just stuck in my mind. So, I offered to convert his emergency lights myself. To start with, I produced small quantities in my living room after I finished work. When demand grew, I quit my job, founded my own company and rented a house with a garage in my hometown of Lindlar. Then I developed my own first emergency lights, which were a real innovation at that time. When the garage became too small, I moved into our first company building in the industrial area of Klause, Lindlar. This area is now the location of today’s company headquarters, of course, which are rather larger than in those early days!

Q:

Did you have an idea back then about what your company could become?

FB: I didn‘t have a business plan at all. Since the beginning, my starting point has been what the customer wanted. The words ‘doesn’t exist’ or ‘doesn’t work’ just aren’t in my vocabulary. There is a solution for every problem and the right sensor technology for every room. If a customer can’t find the perfect solution in our portfolio, we offer bespoke solutions. Such orders always take me back to those early days, except now a special development department takes care of the implementation.

Q:

Q:

The core product range of BEG Lighting Controls today are occupancy and motion detectors. But when you started to sell motion detectors, this was an almost unknown product on the German market wasn’t it? FB: That’s true. We were the first to develop a motion detector for triggering alarm systems. This gave rise to the idea of switching lights outdoors as well. It used to be thought that this was impossible because of the many sources of interference. I was convinced that it was just a question of the right technology. My son Dietmar and I tinkered for a long time and then, in 1986, we were able to launch the very first Luxomat on the market. It could switch the light depending on movement. Today, this is a standard feature, but back then it was a revolution.

Q:

Today, BEG Lighting Controls customers are exclusively electrical wholesalers. Why don’t you also sell directly to end customers? FB: We haven’t always followed this path. In the beginning, I delivered the lights to retailers, who then equipped their projects. At the beginning of the 1980s, I started to build up contacts with wholesalers. Little by little, business relationships and trust developed and since then we moved to the three-stage distribution channel that we have committed to now for over 25 years. We train wholesaler employees through our field service team. Our current high-tech products require a trained specialist partner who can advise the customer competently.

The company has achieved considerable growth, particularly in the last decade. What is the secret of your success?

“We were the first to develop a motion detector for triggering alarm systems. This gave rise to the idea of switching lights outdoors as well.”

Q:

When you look back on the company history, what were the biggest obstacles you had to overcome to achieve today’s success? FB: The biggest setback in the company’s history was in 1979. One night, our company building, including both the production and residential buildings, burned down. My family and I were able to leave the house at the last moment with only the clothes on our backs. It is very difficult to make a new start after such a catastrophe, and I was lucky that we were supported by people who believed in our ideas and made reconstruction possible.

24 | April 2020

Interview – BEG.indd 24

electricalcontractingnews.com

FB: We made a ground-breaking step towards today’s success some 20 years ago, when we decided to take sales into our own hands. Before then, I worked with commercial agencies, which we gradually replaced with our own teams. The first was in France, where our commercial agency was based and we soon dropped out of their range. So, to overcome this we founded our first foreign branch, which is still managed by my first French employee. This was followed by the UK, which is also managed by my first employee there, Paul Jones. In the last 10 years, the growing trend towards energy saving and building automation has helped us to grow considerably. Today, there is hardly a new commercial building without automation.

Q:

With the success of this automation, more and more competitors are also entering the market. How is BEG Lighting Controls holding its own against the big players? FB: In contrast to the large companies, we have specialised in occupancy and motion detectors. We don’t just have a few standard detectors that cover the standard requirements, but we look for the perfect solution for every need, which then is built into the products. This is how we have become experts over the years, which is also reflected in the size of our sales teams. All field staff are from electrical engineering and support the customers from the first idea to the implementation on site. This makes us special in the market and inspires our customers.

Q:

What is the outlook   for the future?

FB: Since 2014, we have been focusing on networked systems. Today’s customers no longer want to just control the light, they want to implement their entire automatic home via one system and control it from their mobile phone. That’s why we are increasingly focusing on the KNX and DALI standards, and we also have our own systems such as BEG DALISYS and BEG DALI LINK in our portfolio.  BEG Lighting Controls, beg-luxomat.com

R

educing energy consumption is an increasing priority for all businesses and individuals, and E-Matic – the energy management specialist – is renowned for developing common sense, energy saving solutions which offer functionality, ease of use and style. Lighting is a key area for focus on energy saving potential, and the company works with energy managers to offer various solutions in this sector – many of which can be retrofit into existing installations for instant savings.

An enhanced UFO high bay range

The high bays come with a guarantee of five years

Committed to innovation and continually developing its product range, E-Matic is pleased to announce an improvement to its already successful UFO style high bay range. The new range boasts increased LED performance, coupled with the latest CAD designed casing, resulting in a slimmer line appearance while providing greater heat dissipation to further improve installation lifespan. The range has been designed with the installer in mind by providing both a mounting bracket and eyelet in the box – and as a result, there is no need for a trip back to the wholesalers to buy an alternative

mounting kit. For safety, E-Matic also provides a steel safety wire as standard. In terms of performance, the range uses the Lumileds 2835 chipset along with a polycarbonate lens to provide the 90-degree coverage. The enclosed driver has dimming capability using 1-10V technology, which is fully utilised by additional accessories such as the new plug in sensor.

Installation made easy The additional EHBPS plug in sensor reduces installation time significantly, as no additional wiring is required to turn the fitting into a fully functioning movement operated fixture. Installation couldn’t be easier and takes less than five seconds. Once installed, the sensor can be programmed using the supplied IR remote control to operate at various ambient lux levels, as well as facilitating adjustments to the operating range and dimming control. With four models in the increased range, customers have the choice from 100W 13,000 Lumen up to a 240W 31,200 Lumen version. Couple this with the additional polycarbonate reflector and you ensure an attractive, feature rich, high-performance solution is available for most applications.

COMMENT

TIME TO FACE THE MUSIC In the latest in our series detailing how electrical contractors can get on the custom installation ladder, Phil Hansen of Connected Distribution looks at the best ways to go about audio distribution.

C

ompared to video, audio distribution is more straightforward, but there are still a number of different ways of doing the same thing. All audio systems need three things to make them work – a source, an amplifier and speakers.

Sources, amplifiers and speakers The source can be music streamers (e.g. Russound MBX or Sonos to give access to Spotify etc.), the sound output of TVs and Sky boxes or turntables – just about anything the customer listens to that they want to hear around the house. We’re all familiar with stereo hi-fi amps, and these have a role in distributed audio. More often than not though, we’ll be specifying multi-channel amplifiers; for example, a 12-channel amp that can send sound to multiple rooms. In (slightly) more complicated installs, the multi-channel amplifier can also be a matrix – more on that later. For custom installation, the watchword is ‘discreet’, and so we tend to specify in-ceiling or in-wall speakers. As with traditional box speakers, they come in a variety of sizes and quality, from very cheap (for background music) to models that can rival the very best hi-fi speakers. Wiring this lot up is much easier than a video distribution system. You need to run interconnect cables from the sources to the amplifiers and speaker cables from the amps to the loudspeakers. And that’s pretty well all there is to it.

Power and size Size isn’t everything, but power is. When wiring up audio systems, there are a few basics you need to understand. The physical size of the speaker doesn’t determine its power handling capabilities or audio quality. Some small speakers can sound fantastic and take a lot of power, while other larger speakers can be power limited and sound terrible. And, of course, that can be the other way around. Amplifier power is also important. Counterintuitively, the bigger the power, the less likely you are to blow the speakers. Here’s the techy bit: most speakers have a sensitivity rating of between 86 and 90dB (decibels) per watt of power from the amplifier, measured at 1m. So, with a speaker rated at 90dB, it takes one watt to give 90dB of volume (normal speech is 60dB). To increase the volume by 3dB, you have to

28 | April 2020

Comment – Connected Distribution.indd 28

“For custom installation, the watchword is ‘discreet’, and so we tend to specify in-ceiling or in-wall speakers.”

double the power. To achieve 110dB (rock concert level) you’d need 128 watts of power. An amplifier rated at 150 watts can do that easily, with bags to spare; but an amplifier rated at 100 watts is going to struggle. Wind it up to full and the amp is going to distort, as amps don’t give out clean signals at their limits – distortion kills speakers! Warning – don’t try and achieve 110dB, as this can permanently damage hearing, as indeed can listening to anything over 85dB for extended periods.

To centralise or decentralise? Traditionally, distributed audio systems have been centralised, with the sources and amplifiers housed in one location (for example, the streamer, Sky box and tuner in a rack alongside the multi-channel amplifier). All that goes from the rack to the speakers in the individual rooms is the speaker cable – which is perfectly happy with long runs, unlike the problems we touched on of getting digital video signals over long distances. If the installation uses a multi-channel amplifier, each input will have its own source to enable that source to be heard in one room. The audio streamer could feed the speakers in the kitchen, and the audio from the Sky box could go to the TV room. If the streamer was required in the snug as well, then two streamers would have to be used, as the source can’t be shared. Another option is to use one source for the whole project. The multi-channel amplifier will have what’s called a ‘bus input’ which enables the sound from the source to be sent to all speakers. This is

electricalcontractingnews.com

common in commercial environments, such as bars and restaurants.

The audio matrix Taking the centralised idea further is the audio matrix. This is very similar to the video matrix we talked about earlier in the series. The matrix has the ability to send any source to any room, so the music streamer could be selected in the lounge, Sky in the kitchen and the tuner in the snug. The same source can feed multiple rooms at the same time. Source selection and control is made using an app on a tablet, or via remote keypads. Today, many manufacturers are producing simpler solutions for decentralised installations. This is essentially a separate system in each room, but with some degree of inter-operability for the sharing of sources from room to room. A good example is a product like the Russound MBX-AMP. This is a streamer and amplifier in one, which can be free standing or wall mounted behind a TV, with the speaker cables routed through the wall to the speakers. The customer uses an app to control the streamer selection and volume. Where it comes into its own is the ability to also take the digital sound output from the TV and send it to the speakers to give the user a far better audio experience than they could ever get from the TV. Products like this make multi-room audio very easy and flexible for first time installers. Their expandability also means it’s not necessary to go down the centralised route and it’s the best place to start for new installers.  Connected Distribution, connecteddistribution.com

FIRE, SAFETY & SECURITY

The REKOR IP CCTV cameras have been tailored for the domestic market

SAFE AND SECURE WITH ESP Neil Baldwin, Managing Director at Scolmore Group company, ESP, looks at how some of the latest technologies and contractor engagement are helping to drive product development of the company’s security solutions.

A

By keeping a close eye on developments within the overall security sector and taking on board feedback from the numerous contractors we speak to, we are able to develop products that harness the latest technologies and meet the growing demand from our customers.

ccording to the latest report from AMA Research, the total UK electronic security market of products – CCTV, electronic access control and intruder alarms – and associated services was estimated at approximately £2.35bn in 2017 and is expected to grow at 12% per year. Market growth is being driven by technological advancements boosting replacement demand, and improving new build and RMI expenditure across key market sectors. CCTV accounts for the majority of the market in value terms, with a 52% share. This sector has seen the greatest levels of innovation and new product development, and with technology also becoming more affordable, this is leading to a continued shift away from analogue to digital products.

IP CCTV The HDView IP (Internet Protocol) CCTV range was developed to satisfy the growing demand from wholesale customers and contractors and will meet the needs of a changing marketplace and the shift from analogue to IP systems. This move from analogue to IP CCTV systems gives installers the opportunity to sell an upgrade to their clients, to provide a more reliable security solution that offers superior benefits. ESP’s IP CCTV range is designed to offer superior, reliable and straightforward installation solutions for a range of

applications from domestic through to larger and more complex commercial projects. The range features PoE (Power over Ethernet) which enables the camera and power feed to be wired in Cat5e cable up to 100m without the need for additional power, which makes installation much more convenient. A single Ethernet cable provides both the power and the HD digital feed, with just one cable per camera, and multiple cameras can be installed anywhere on the network that the NVR is connected to. Processing power, an abundance of features, versatility and high resolution IP CCTV all combine to make this the superior choice over traditional analogue systems. There are two distinct IP ranges available – the REKOR IP 2 megapixel range, which has been tailored for the domestic market; and the HDView IP 5 megapixel range, which is aimed at larger applications with a wide choice of NVR and camera selection.

expandable storage capacity, up to 128GB (8GB supplied). The battery powered model now includes a system hub which sits between the door station and the router to boost signal, as well as acting as a remote door chime. The new Wi-Fi Door Stations come in a kit form, containing everything required for the installer to quickly and simply get the system up and running.

Globally, the overall access control market is expected to grow from $7.5 billion in 2018 to $12.1 billion by 2024. The growth of the market is driven by high adoption of access control solutions owing to increasing crime rates globally; technological advancements and deployment of wireless technology in security systems; and adoption of IoT-based security systems with cloud computing platforms. It represents a growing market and ESP offers contractors a range of solutions to suit a range of applications big and small – from domestic properties to larger commercial premises. The latest product development in this category has been at the domestic end, with the introduction of the next generation of Wi-Fi doorbells that overcome some of the issues of earlier models. ESP’s new Aperta Wi-Fi Door Station is offered as a wired or battery powered version and provides an ideal security solution for households, acting as a deterrent to unwanted intruders as well as a facilitating entry and access for visitors. It allows users to monitor visitors to the property whether they are on the premises or on the other side of the world. From a smartphone or tablet, and using the free ESP app, property dwellers can easily see who is at the door or gate, engage in two-way communication and allow remote access if desired. The new Generation 3 models are more contemporary in design and include a number of improvements, including a better image resolution of 1080p, an increased camera angle to capture more footage, and the addition of a motion detection function, which means the door station will automatically motion and send a notification whilst recording. They will also benefit from the new ESP smart app, which is also compatible across the GuardCam Deco and GuardCam LED Wi-Fi security camera LED flood light systems. Both the wired and battery powered models feature

Two-wire fire protection

“ESP’s IP CCTV range is designed to offer superior, reliable and straightforward installation solutions for a range of applications.”

Like the electronic security sector, a key feature of the fire protection market is technology and increasing integration with fire and security systems. A key driver of innovation in this sector has been the industry’s desire to continue reducing the likelihood and number of false alarms, and the majority of innovations have been in detection technology rather than suppression. Developments have included improved capability of sensor technology in smoke detectors that can detect more quickly, with greater reliability and with a greater degree of differentiation between different types of smoke and vapours. New technology was the focus for the latest addition to the MAGfire range of fire protection products – MAGDUO two-wire fire alarm system – launched last year. MAGDUO sits alongside the existing MAG conventional fire alarm products and the MAGPRO Addressable range, fulfilling the increasing demand from customers for this latest technology. It is aimed at small to medium contractors, offering them a highly flexible and adaptable system that will save them time and money on the installation process. Two-Wire fire alarm systems are based on standard conventional system technology. Unlike standard conventional four wired systems where the detectors, call points and alarm devices for each zone are wired on separate circuits, MAGDUO utilises intelligent Two-Wire technology, which allows all devices to be wired on the same set of two-core zone cables back to the control panel – enabling it to use a single circuit per zone both for detection and to power the sounders. This advanced technology can reduce both installation and material costs. There are some 25 separate products in the MAGDUO range, including two, four and eight-zone fire panels as well as repeater panels – with the four and eight zone panels able to support up to eight repeater panels. A FlexiPoint detector brings further versatility and convenience to the system. As well as offering seven different modes of fire detection, including combined heat and smoke, it is also available with an inbuilt sounder or

The Aperta range acts as a deterrent to unwanted intruders and facilitates entry and access for visitors

inbuilt sounder strobe, which will assist with a compact install solution (as the detector and sounder is allin-one as opposed to separate units). Due to the different options, FlexiPoint offers convenience for wholesalers and installers, as they will not be required to carry a complete range of devices. Another key benefit is the built-in Alarm Confirmation feature, which allows the selection of a confirmation period for individual detectors; and therefore confirms if the smoke/heat detected is an actual fire – and not a false alarm. With its adaptability, speed of installation and cost-effectiveness, MAGDUO is providing an ideal fire alarm solution for a range of small to medium sized projects such as restaurants, retail outlets, schools, offices, apartments and hotels.

ESP’s Aperta Wi-Fi door station is offered as a wired or battery powered version

Training Keen to ensure that its wholesale customers and contractors alike are up to date with the latest products and their technologies, ESP offers a range of free training courses on the new system to all wholesalers and installers. There are two separate training programmes available. Security training provides an overview of all the ESP product categories, CCTV, access control, external security, fire protection and emergency lighting, with full features and benefits covered. The fire training sessions – divided into 50% presentation and 50% practical – aim to cover the best practice method for installing, setting up and final commissioning of ESP’s fire protection systems. n today’s world, wireless technology is the norm – from mobile phones, tablets and Wi-Fi, to even fire department personnel counting on their radios to respond to alarms and communicate on the scene. At Apollo Fire Detectors, demand is rising and continues to grow for XPander, our wireless, intelligent fire detector range. The increase in demand reflects the growing popularity of wireless systems, and greater confidence in the reliability of

Historic buildings The enormous flexibility and endless combinations of wireless devices make them a sound choice, particularly for areas of architectural and structural sensitivity such as historic buildings.

Historic buildings pose many challenges for those tasked with protecting them from fire. The threat and consequences of fire in any building are serious. However, in the case of historic buildings, which are often architecturally unique and part of our cultural heritage, the loss can be even more devastating. Fire alarm systems for historic or listed buildings must be sensitively integrated, should have minimum impact on the structure of the building and should be reversible – if it is removed, then the listed

FIRE, SAFETY & SECURITY The XPander wireless system was used to protect the construction management offices, marketing suites, changing rooms, and communal spaces for the workers in the building, whilst under construction. XPander proved to be a reliable temporary fire protection solution for these areas that didn’t interfere with the fabric of the building and could be installed and dismantled quickly when the project came to the final fit-out stage.

Quick and easy to install Since there is no cabling needed, wireless fire alarms are less intrusive, cause less disruption, and are therefore easier and quicker to install. This makes them ideal for schools, hospitals and care homes. They are more cost-effective too, and allow businesses to continue as usual throughout the installation. A good example of this was the installation of XPander devices in five care homes owned by the family-run home care company, Care By Us, where carers look after young people and adults with learning difficulties. During installation, carers could carry on with their duties and the residents were not distressed by the work.

aspect of the building must remain intact as it was before. This makes wireless systems the perfect solution.

Alongside wired systems Wireless systems are a great way to expand and enhance existing wired fire alarm systems. For example, The National Trust adopts the approach of using hard-wired systems where possible, and integrated wireless system components where wiring and access is more difficult or detrimental to the building preservation. This is a useful strategy in many other environments too. In some cases, wiring to an outbuilding or storeroom may be impossible due to a hazardous environment. In this scenario, utilising a wireless system would be ideal. The wired loop would include a translator, as this module is used to communicate with the wireless devices. Having a simple addition to a wired loop that doesn’t interfere with the integrity of the system is essential. Schools are another common application for wireless systems, where upgrades undertaken by the school could affect the fire system. This means that a solution

needs to be put in place that protects the rest of the school whilst also protecting those working on the upgrades. A wireless system could be temporally adopted, housed in the working area, to provide protection without having to compromise or interfere with the existing wired loop. This approach provides complete protection in the most professional, convenient and cost-effective way possible. Naturally, it also allows smaller, simple adhoc system add-ons to existing systems to be completed without detailed planning or building disruption, and with the minimum amount of time and fuss.

Temporary structures Wireless systems are also great solutions used for temporary structures such as marques at festivals and other events, or for temporary premises whilst under construction. This was the case at TwentyTwo, a 62-storey building in Bishopsgate, London, comprising 1.275 million square feet of office space, over 100,000 sq-ft of leisure and social space, including restaurants, art galleries, a gym and a spa.

“Since there is no cabling needed, wireless fire alarms are less intrusive, cause less disruption and are therefore easier and quicker to install.”

An added benefit is that the devices in a wireless system can also be removed for any maintenance work, or in case there are any modifications happening in the building or worksite. If any of the devices in the wireless alarm system require updating, it is very easy to replace the old one with a new device. This also helps to maintain the integrity of the fire alarm system.

Training and support Wireless fire alarms systems are ideal solutions for almost every location; they are reusable, reliable and scalable. So if the location is inaccessible or has hard to reach points that require fire protection, if there are restrictions preventing you from hard-wiring into the walls, or you don’t want any unsightly wires, then wireless solutions are the way to go. Whilst they are far easier to fit than wired systems, Apollo Fire Detectors provides a range of free training courses for this and its other products and services. Its ‘Hybrid wireless fire detection and system principles’ course explains how the system works and outlines the features and benefits. It also describes how to perform radio surveys, and frequency and channel selection for multiple interfaces.  Apollo Fire Detectors, apollo-fire.co.uk

FIRE, SAFETY & SECURITY

POWERING A SAFETY-FIRST APPROACH Jenny Paramore, ABB Emergi-Lite’s Product Marketing Specialist, discusses the importance of selecting the best power supply equipment for emergency lighting – and explains how Central Power Supplies can safeguard people.

What do Central Power Supplies (CPS) contribute to emergency lighting systems?

ABB’s Emergi-Lite EMEX battery system is specified to deliver three and a half times the power of its output rating

Safety systems have always been important, but the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire really emphasised the need for more robust equipment and processes in buildings across the UK. Protecting residents, inhabitants, and visitors must always be paramount – and in a disaster situation, systems such as emergency lighting play a key role, guiding people to fire exits and helping them make their way to safety. CPSs (also known as static inverters) are a vital component of emergency lighting systems. They’re designed to offer the best possible performance in emergency situations, and while they may appear to be similar but more costly than an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), there are important differences that provide peace of mind that your building’s occupants and visitors will be safe and sound within its walls. Both types of systems integrate batteries, chargers, alarms, circuitry, and instrumentation, and can be designed to provide three hours of power for all emergency lighting lamps and luminaries, with a response time of no more than five seconds.

Why don’t UPS systems work as well as CPSs?

What rules and regulations govern central power supplies?

While a CPS and a UPS will both provide backup power in the event that mains power goes down, UPS systems are seen as offering lower cost. This can be enticing to contractors and consultants on a tight budget. But safety can’t be compromised. The value that CPSs provide is that they have dramatically higher overload protection than UPS systems, meaning they’re better equipped to handle unexpected high fault currents that can arise in the immediate aftermath of an explosion or a fire. CPSs are rated to provide power to operate a building’s main switchgear before supplying up to 180 minutes of fail-safe power for emergency lighting systems. For example, the Emergi-Lite EMEX battery system is specified to deliver three and a half times the power of its output rating. This gives it the capability to clear fault currents and disruptions. Without the same level of overload protection performance that is built into a CPS, a UPS may not work as expected in the event of a physical disaster, because it would not be able to provide switching power required for the main switchgear to clear high fault currents. Unless it is specified as an uprated version, a UPS doesn’t have the ability to operate a switchgear, and why would it? It’s designed to provide backup power in data centres and telecoms installations – supporting cooling systems, electronic loads, and supplying enough power to bridge the period between the beginning and end of an outage. UPS units also regular power quality by absorbing voltage spikes and sags to protect high-value server racks and electronics, but they are not specifically designed for emergency power scenarios – they don’t have the power to switch the main switchgear, and therefore aren’t as reliable for emergency lighting. Essentially, a UPS system has a response time of minutes. A CPS system can respond in seconds. In an emergency situation, that can be the difference between a nuisance and a tragedy.

The UK uses a number of different standards for emergency lighting, chiefly the BS EN 50171 standard, which covers central power supplies. UPS systems don’t tend to meet this standard without a contractor uprating them, whereas CPSs are designed to meet them from the outset to be fit for purpose as far as emergency lighting systems are concerned.

“There has never been more scrutiny on safety systems in buildings, but manual testing of safety systems is a costly, timeconsuming process.”

The Emergi-Lite EMEX battery system has the capability to clear fault currents and disruptions

Are there any other differences? The other main difference is that a specially designed CPS can also help building managers meet government regulations for testing and reporting. There has never been more scrutiny on safety systems in buildings and it is vital that records are maintained – but manual testing of safety systems is a costly, time-consuming process. As a result, the latest generation of CPS integrates software and electronics that will look after periodic testing and record keeping in adherence to the IEC 62034 standard for automatic testing. This feature will run tests on the lighting circuits on a CPS to ensure they are operating as they should be. Essentially, during this process, a software controller will duplicate the conditions of a power cut and check emergency lighting circuits to find out if everything’s working properly. The system then records and uploads test results to building management systems such as LonWorks and BACnet and will send an alert if it detects a fault. In comparison, a standard UPS system will not have this functionality as a standard option – so will require additional engineering time and effort to set up and commission. As a result, their testing and reporting capabilities are another good example of why CPSs are better from a physical safety and from a cost standpoint. They might cost more upfront, but they’ll save your building money and time in the long run. A CPS is about more than performance – it’s about peace of mind.  ABB, new.abb.com/uk

FIRE, SAFETY & SECURITY

SPARKING A NEW ERA OF SAFETY With over 65,000 fires in homes across England in the past five years, Electrium looks at the best ways of improving fire safety, one device at a time, in rental properties.

M

Arc Fault Detection Devices, such as the Crabtree Starbreaker mini AFDD shown here, can reduce the likelihood of electrical fires

any people and organisations, including landlords and tenants themselves, are responsible for checking and improving fire safety in residential properties. While tenants are responsible for ensuring that they don’t create a fire hazard in their homes, landlords of residential buildings have a legal duty to ensure that a fire risk assessment is carried out so that any fire risks and hazards are removed or reduced as far as possible. One of the ways this can be achieved is by adding an extra layer of protection against electrical fires. Over the past five years, in England alone, there have been over 65,000 fires from an electrical origin, but across the UK the figure is even higher.

Eliminating arc faults One of the sources of these electrical fires is the hidden, but highly dangerous, arc faults. Electrical fires caused by arc faults typically occur at poorly made or loosening connections that overheat, in damaged leads and cables, or through old, weak and failing cable insulation. Dave Enefer, Product Manager (Crabtree) at Electrium, comments: “The 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations sets out requirements for electrical installations in the UK, including requirements for protection of persons, livestock and property against the risk from fires that may be generated and propagated in electrical installations. Requirements include protecting against fire caused by insulation faults, high temperature and sparks and arcs.” Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs) can reduce the likelihood of electrical fires from these conditions by detecting the arcing conditions before the overheating and ignition of flammable materials occurs. Specifiers and installers can now improve electrical safety, without any extra effort, by using the Starbreaker combined AFDD-RCBO.

Electrical fires caused by arc faults typically occur at poorly made or loosening connections that overheat, in damaged leads and cables

“While RCDs and MCBs protect against overcurrent, short circuit and earth leakage protection, they’re unable to detect arcing.”

An added layer of protection

Intelligent monitoring

This innovative new product integrates arc fault detection with RCD and MCB capability in a revolutionary single DIN module, delivering maximum safety in the minimum footprint. It fully caters for the requirements and recommendations of the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations and improves fire safety standards for landlords and tenants. Starbreaker Mini AFDDs provide an extra layer of protection for people and property, while also helping future-proof installations against ever-changing regulations. Recognised as a ‘significant risk’ in the 18th Edition, arcing is typically caused by poorly made or failing connections or failing insulation in AC 230V final circuits. While RCDs and MCBs protect against overcurrent, short circuit and earth leakage protection, they’re unable to detect arcing – which leaves a gap in the safety provision. Until recently, installers have had no way of closing that gap, as there hasn’t been access to AFDDs. Early models were two modules wide and took up too much space to fit in the already crowded consumer unit – which limited uptake. The new Starbreaker Mini AFDD overcomes these barriers by combining all three layers of protection in one DIN module.

Using digital technology to constantly monitor circuit conditions, the Starbreaker Mini AFDD is able to distinguish between ‘operational sparking’ – for example, in washing machines and vacuum cleaner motors – and abnormal activity that could denote a potentially dangerous event. Complying fully with the requirements of BS7671, this single module AFDD is a two-pole switching device which will totally isolate any faulty circuit or appliance, ensuring peace of mind for installers, homeowners and investors. As an additional benefit, the new Starbreaker Mini AFDD-RCBO is an easy to fit ‘plug and play’ option that can be installed into any appropriate Starbreaker consumer unit, without the need for special assembly or new busbars. Dave Enefer notes, “Whatever the age of the Starbreaker unit, the new Mini AFDD slots easily into place, so it’s equally suitable for new builds, upgrades and retrofits to provide additional protection.” Designed to bringing three levels of safety in one easy-fit single module, Crabtree believes that its Starbreaker Mini AFDD is a major step forward in electrical safety.  Electrium, electrium.co.uk

Ebbsfleet train station’s car park is benefitting from new Goodlight LEDs

LIGHTING THE GREAT OUTDOORS Saima Shafi, Sales and Marketing Director of Goodlight, explains why LED lighting is the way forward for outdoor facilities and looks at some of the company’s recent projects.

Brighter lighting

sing lighting effectively in exterior spaces, with an eye on architecture, location and topology, can significantly improve the user experience. It provides personal comfort and security, as well as heightening the drama and instilling a feeling of civic pride. When considering their options for exterior illumination, facilities managers should look to LED lighting solutions, which can offer more efficient, flexible and controllable light, designed to enhance any outdoor space, at a lower cost of ownership.

Open areas need clean, bright, evenly distributed light, all of which can be fulfilled by LED luminaires. Their directional light gives optimum visibility with an even spread of light that is devoid of shadowing or glare and flicker-free, as opposed to fluorescent lighting which spreads the light more spherically. A better quality of light distribution is important in outdoor facilities such as car parks, which require bright illumination not only so the space can be shared safely by drivers and pedestrians, but also to enable security cameras to spot antisocial behaviour. In a recent LED upgrade project to replace the outdated fluorescent and metal halide

/electricalcontractingnews

luminaires in the international train station car parks at Ashford, Ebbsfleet, St Pancras and Stratford, the installation included our G360 SON lamps (Daylight and Natural) in 20W, 30W and 60W which, from a 360° beam angle, deliver a high output of 140 Lm/W. This brightness is achieved through an advanced cooling system. Revolutionary vent ducts create maximum airflow around the lamp, ensuring the heat is drawn away from the LED, significantly improving reliability, consistency and performance. The brightness of the LED lighting can adapt swiftly through wireless control systems to different environmental changes, such as weather conditions and light levels; all vital in keeping the facility safe and well-lit at all times.

Goodlight’s LED are particularly suitable for warehouses – both inside and out

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

Longer-lasting lighting LED lamps and luminaires rated at 50,000 hours last three times longer than typical fluorescent lights, giving further savings to site operators. The 50,000-hour lifespan equates to 11 years if switched on for 12 hours per day. With the international train station car parks project, improved illumination was provided to over 8,000 spaces in total and the car park operators achieved up to 80% energy savings.

“Open areas need clean, bright, evenly distributed light, all of which can be fulfilled by LED luminaires.”

Goodlight’s 2D LED bulkhead luminaires come with a black trim to match most facias, guttering and facades

46 | April 2020

Exterior Lighting – Goodlight.indd 46

When Goodlight replaced the lighting at the Liverpool Street station concourse, maintenance teams noticed there was a lot of discolouration around the lamps and reflectors, caused by heat produced by the old fluorescent lamps and control gear. This illustrates both the amount of waste heat generated and the issues it was causing. The station’s new LED lighting was estimated to use about half the energy of the old lights, with an improvement in Lux – from approximately 75 Lux to 210 Lux – thanks to the new installation.

Remote management To maximise these energy savings, owners can install a smart lighting control system, such as Light Boss, which connects to luminaires wirelessly from a single interface, allowing any organisation to monitor, automate, control and report on all connected lighting. Automated lighting networks can radically reduce energy consumption whilst delivering optimal lighting performance. Simple controls can be connected to all luminaires with occupancy and daylight detection and presence detectors. Remote systems can be coupled with infrared cameras to allow for security management as well. Some smart LED lighting control systems, including Light Boss, report on energy consumption, providing self-test emergency light monitoring, ideal for lighting maintenance facilitators and providers, and allowing operators to check for faults remotely. Energy consumption can be of concern for facilities managers during the dark winter months when demands on lighting are greater. Typical savings when

electricalcontractingnews.com

automated systems are combined with LED luminaires stand between 60-95%, depending on its application, proving they radically reduce energy consumption whilst delivering optimal lighting performance.

Weatherproof and retrofittable LED luminaires ideally suit the varied demands of the outdoors. In a harsher environment, light fittings may be harder for maintenance managers to access, adding additional complications to installation. Retrofitting makes installation a lot simpler. LED luminaires that can be retrofitted, such as our G360 LED SON replacement lamps in 20W, 30W and 60W, are perfect for installation in bollards, globes, street lighting lamp heads or canopies. Furthermore, no ballasts or starters are needed for these products. Exterior LED luminaires need to be protected against the elements, and many are specifically designed to do so. Goodlight’s 2D LED bulkhead luminaires with 117Lm/W, for example, are rated IP65 to prevent dust or water ingress, and feature anti-corrosive protection. They not only offer robust performance, but come with black trim to match most facias, guttering and facades.

Conclusion LED lighting is the absolute way forward for outdoor facilities. The cost savings, opportunity for remote management and evenly distributed light all contribute to a beautiful illuminated exterior that will leave an impression on visitors.  Goodlight, goodlight.co.uk

THINK SECURITY — THINK EXTERIOR LIGHTING Exterior security lighting can provide a simple to install and affordable way of enhancing home and business security. Neil Baldwin, Managing Director of ESP, looks at some of the options.

F

or some home and business owners, it may be a case of starting from scratch with the provision of security; while for others, it’s a case of replacing old and corroded equipment or upgrading to a more sophisticated and reliable system. The installer working on the project can do an assessment of the requirements and advise on the best solution to meet the specific needs. For those clients with no external security measures in place to protect their properties, the installation of a simple camera and security floodlight system could be the answer to deterring unwanted intruders. There are a range of products available, such as a complete, all-in-one, energy-efficient, high-performance LED PIR floodlight system.

LEDs to heighten security measures

With GuardCam, users can remotely dim or turn on or off the LED lamp on the outside of the premises

Exterior Lighting – ESP.indd 48

A combined security camera and LED floodlight like ESP’s GuardCam LED, for example, is suitable not just for securing domestic properties, but also for areas around offices and industrial or agricultural units. These systems are straightforward to install by simply connecting to the mains power, fixing to the wall and setting the time and date via the supplied SD card. Once switched on, it will detect an intruder, floodlight the area, and initiate a high definition video recording directly to an internal SD card. If selected, an audible warning can be delivered, and users have the ability to record their own warning message. For a more sophisticated solution, there are Wi-Fi versions available that offer the additional benefit of remote monitoring via smartphone or tablet. The GuardCam Deco, for example, is a combined Wi-Fi security camera and LED floodlight system, which has been designed with ease of set up as a key feature.

ESP’s GuardCam LED will detect an intruder, floodlight the area, and initiate a high definition video recording

“Slimline, low energy LED floodlights are meeting the growing trend for a stylish, more aesthetic lighting solution.”

The remote monitoring function via smartphone or tablet is available using ESP’s specially developed ESP Smart app. With a built-in camera that offers full 1080p HD live viewing and recording, this type of security camera and floodlight system is an ideal all-in-one solution for domestic and commercial applications. On approaching the unit, it will detect the intruder with proven PIR technology at a distance of up to 10m from the unit. It will floodlight the area, initiate a video recording and provide the user with an option to deliver a two-way audio message or activate the inbuilt alarm warning. It features an adjustable 16W high-intensity LED security lamp (3000K colour light and 800 lumen) and you can remotely dim or turn on/off the LED lamp via the app. It will record up to 200, 20-second video sessions onto the supplied 8GB storage, and this is expandable up to 64GB. GuardCam LED Wi-Fi has the option to deliver motion activation notifications via the app whilst recording the activation. The user-friendly app also allows recordings to be accessed. The integral high definition digital camera offers wide angle camera view and clear image recording in video format. Night images retain colour and clarity due to the automatic LED light illumination. For other projects, it may be that exterior lighting is required simply to light up areas to the front, back or side of a property to make access around these areas safe during the dark. If this is the case, there are a number of options for a good quality LED floodlighting provision.

electricalcontractingnews.com

Today, there are slimline, low energy LED floodlights available that are meeting the growing trend for a stylish, more aesthetic lighting solution than the bulky options often associated with floodlights. A range like ESP’s NightHawk Plus offers a choice of wattage/lumen outputs to ensure a solution for a broad range of applications, from small walkways, through to large gardens and work yards. The range offers 10W/800 lumen, 20W/1600 lumen, 30W/2400 lumen and 50W/4000 lumen fittings, with each one available as a straightforward floodlight and as a PIR version. The standard fitting is switched on and off manually or can be wired into an external device – such as a digital timer – and is suitable where control of the lighting system is preferred. The built-in PIR sensor fitting provides added security, and for ease of use, it comes with predefined settings – range, Lux level and the trigger time duration parameters. The fittings are simple and straightforward to install using the adjustable bracket supplied. They each offer a 4000K colour temperature which produces a cool white output and they feature a textured diffuser which helps prevent an intense glare and adds to the overall aesthetic design. Each product in the range is available in black or white to maximise the choice and appeal to suit all exteriors. The robust housings are IP65 rated. Even where an existing external light or security light might be in place, chances are that it is old, corroded and out of order. Yet, a fully functioning, replacement solution can be installed in no more than 15 minutes and without the need for additional cabling. This is an easy solution for installers to sell to customers.  ESP, espuk.com

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

The approach was to install pulsing handrail lighting to indicate direction and pace on the stairway

MAKING LIGHT WORK FOR MORE INTELLIGENT STATIONS A consortium led by DW Windsor recently embarked on a study to address station capacity and passenger flow at Chippenham train station – and found that there is the potential to deliver benefits of over £258m.

P

Key project requirements

erformance and safety – along with the movement of people – at train stations is a key concern in rail transport today; especially with the increasing numbers of passengers, and often outdated station spaces. The Rail Technology Strategy believes that improving capacity and enhancing customer experience will increase passenger flow in stations, and this has the potential to deliver benefits of over £258m.

The below were outlined as the main requirements of the project: •  Create intelligent stations that respond to the needs of customers, using dynamic lighting •  Use light to get people on and off trains and through the station quickly and safely •  Ensure lighting does not cause glare or visual discomfort for drivers and passengers •  Find an alternative to existing wayfinding solutions; decluttering stations of

outdated signage/zoning systems •  Modernise the rail industry through the use of current trends i.e. experience lighting that’s flexible, controllable, responsive and intuitive •  System must be instinctive and engaging

Why lighting? Traditionally, printed signage has been used to help commuter flow, but signs need to be cognitively processed, which can take a few more precious seconds. Light, on the other hand, is more intuitive and quicker for the individual to process.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING •  The participant notices the lights and may look up into the canopy, onto the projection or along the platform, but takes no further action in response to the light. •  The participant notices the light and interacts with it by looking/moving either a body part (e.g. foot) or whole body into and/or out of the projection. •  The participant is positioned away from the lighting but once activated, appears to move closer/into the light after the light.

The projects: Handrail, stairway lighting With regards to the handrails and stairway lighting, the goal here is to encourage efficient bi-directional passenger flows, improve space allocation and regulate walking speeds. The approach was to install pulsing handrail lighting to indicate direction and pace on the stairway. Furthermore, coloured LED lights were placed at the top of the staircase to align people descending. The trial was evaluated with this series of research questions: Do the lights function as intended? Do passengers move up and down the appropriate side of the stairway? Do the stairways clear quicker during busy times? Are there any improvements in passenger experience? Customers and staff were interviewed, and observers took photos to document results.

Lighting was projected onto the platform to indicate to passengers where to stand in alignment with carriage doors

The result Research has shown that lighting can influence behaviour, speed and the movement of people. Many stations are already upgrading their functional lighting to LEDs to save energy, but LED lighting, with intelligent control functionality, has further reaching potential.

Proof of concept The University of Nottingham’s Human Factors team and Geospatial Institute led a research study to identify the typical movement-related issues a station faces. They then conducted an extensive review of lighting research literature and reported effects of lighting upon behaviour/mood. This led to the identification of clear opportunities for using light to influence movement behaviours. As a result, FirstGroup agreed for a proof of concept trial site at Chippenham Station, and the project was funded by the Department for Transport and delivered through a competition run by InnovateUK: Accelerating Innovation in Rail 4 (AIR4). DW Windsor, a British designer and manufacturer of exterior lighting solutions, led the project, working with sister company Urban Control to develop new wireless, connected lights and sensors that are controlled through cloud-based software.

The projects: platforms For the station’s platforms, the aim was to reduce dwell time and improve customer experience and safety; providing intuitive information to customers on where to stand to board the train and improve the flow of passengers off the trains and on the platform.

Exterior Lighting – DW Windsor.indd 52

“Traditionally, printed signage has been used to help commuter flow, but light is more intuitive and quicker for the individual to process.”

DW Windsor used Gobo projected lighting on the platform to indicate to passengers where to stand in alignment with a carriage door, allowing a freer flow of passengers disembarking. The trial was evaluated by the University with a series of research questions, including: Do the lights function as intended? Do passengers respond to the lighting/move to stand for the train? Do passengers distribute evenly along the platform? Do passengers appreciate the lighting intervention? Is there more orderly boarding? A combination of observations (both direct and indirect), interviews with customers and staff and Wi-Fi sniffing data were used to measure success.

The result The initial results are extremely encouraging. People did seem to notice the lights (i.e. looked up – looked back, looked up – looked along) and a small proportion of people used the lights to stand in the correct place. There were several types of interactions with the lights. Responses were categorised into five major response types: •  The participant is positioned in an area from which it would be difficult to see the light and/or they are turned away from the lights. •  The participant is positioned in an area in which it would be easy to see the lights, but for whatever reason (for example, they are using their phone), they do not notice the lights.

electricalcontractingnews.com

Survey responses indicated that passengers understood the purpose of the lighting. It was found that the lights were more visible during darkness or partial light – ideal for high commuter times – but the movement effect was strongest around dawn. Several incidents were noted where passengers predominantly used the stairway as directed. Some people were observed moving from one side to the other after observing the lights. In conclusion, the lights were noticeable and functioned as intended. People responded to the lights and some understood the intended reaction, while others thought they were to inspire use of the handrail, which encourages safer usage and movement. Staff found the lights useful as a device to back up their suggestions on how to use the stairway. Nick Coad, Insetting Consultant, working with Urban Control, states, “There was so much interest in our demonstration that it shows that the market is ready for a change. The beauty of these solutions is that they are not limited to rail alone, and they can be applied anywhere crowds need to be influenced. The application possibilities are extensive, from football stadiums to music concerts.” Stuart Parker, FirstGroup, Property Director, comments, “This has been a very exciting project to be involved in. Innovative initiatives of this nature can open the door to a world of possibilities and are setting the standard for future customer experiences”.  DW Windsor, dwwindsor.com

Too short, and there will be open circuits discovered when testing. Too long, and terminations look sloppy or performance can suffer when pairs are exposed outside of the plug body/cable jacket. It’s also easy for a conductor to move during this process and go unnoticed until the cables are tested.

Making terminations faster Once the proper order is confirmed, the FT45 tool crimps and trims the cable in one step, enabling conductors to be cut flush with the end face of the connector; thereby making terminations faster. No protrusions or small lengths of conductor remain beyond the plastic face of the connector, which minimises accidental shorting of conductors or inadvertent contact in plug jacks. Performance is improved because the cable is fully seated into the connector and connector waste is virtually eliminated. This is particularly useful when installing RJ45 plugs at the end of links which connect directly to CCTV and access control systems, especially on projects involving large office buildings or locations where fault investigation can be difficult – such as externally mounted IP CCTV cameras, for example. The FT-45 can also be used when working with patch cords in IP CCTV installations, as well as for fitting IP access controls. It makes installing extended patch cords easier – to enable video conferencing, for example – and can also be used to create a cat6 cable backbone for linking data cabinets together.

standard or multi-piece modular plugs knows it is a time consuming and often error-prone process. Unlike traditional closed end plugs usually used for RJ45 connections, IDEAL FT-45 Feed-Thru Modular Plugs feature open ends that allow conductors to be completely fed through the connector before crimping. This allows installers to check the conductors that feed through the connector are inserted far enough to be pierced by the contact. The cable can be pushed into the connector to ensure that the twisted pairs are as close to the pin contacts as possible, and that the jacket is seated beyond the primary strain relief for a secure connection. The order can visually be inspected, removed and reordered, and the connector can be replaced if necessary, ensuring greater accuracy and fewer errors.

The versatile tool simplifies terminations and increases first time success rates. The single crimp cavity for RJ-45 / 8-position connectors is capable of crimping IDEAL feed-thru, standard, shielded and unshielded connectors for CAT5e, CAT6 and CAT6A, allowing users to control costs by easily maintaining a single crimp tool, instead of purchasing a new one for different types of RJ-45 connectors. The replaceable heavy-duty cutting blade will last for more than 2,000 cuts. The FT-45 also requires less than half of the mechanical force of traditional crimpers to squeeze the handle closed and crimp the connector. No ratchet mechanism is needed, and one- handed crimping is possible. Additionally, the FT45 includes 568A and 568B wiring schemes marked on the tool for ease of use. The open-ended feed through plug includes three-pin contacts with 50µ gold plated contact areas, improving wire stability into every wire, for more conductive contact points. The FT-45 tool is compact, at just under 14cm (5.5 inches) in length and weighing just over 230 grams (0.5 pounds) – about half the size and weight of bulkier traditional tools. It easily fits into your pocket and lightens the tool bag load considerably.

CABLE & CABLE MANAGEMENT

NAVIGATING THE CABLE SPECIFICATION MINEFIELD When it comes to the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and cables, there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution. Daniel Butterfield, Head of UK Sales & Export at FS Cables, explains more.

W

hat a minefield cable specification is. Specifiers and installers have my sympathies. In July 2017, the original Construction Product Directive (CPR) was expanded to include performance specifications relating to how a cable reacts to fire. The revised legislation aimed to harmonise the specifications across all EU member states via the Euroclasses universal classification.

Maintaining safety is of paramount importance, but Daniel Butterfield believes CPR guidance isn’t necessarily clear

Aims of the Construction Products Regulation

Specifiers and installers need to ensure the cables they select are appropriate for the fire risks in the building

Just to recap, the key aims of the Construction Products Regulation in relation to cable are twofold: The first aim is to standardise classification of combustible materials used in the building industry; and the second is to ensure designers and installers are more aware of the contribution cable products make to the spread of fire. There’s little doubt that CPR’s contribution to fire safety is seen as a positive one. But often, the way in which CPR has been implemented and interpreted has simply served to spread confusion and a lack of understanding across the UK construction sector. The 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations recognises that where applicable, cables need to meet CPR requirements and carry a Euroclass for fire performance. However, it does not specify or recommend which Euroclass to use in an environment or application, nor does it outlaw using cables that emit toxic fumes and smoke in the event of fire.

Don’t compromise on safety “In some European states, the local regulatory body has defined which class to specify for a specific application, but we are not so fortunate here in the UK.”

Specifiers and installers need to ensure the cables they select are appropriate for the fire risks in the building or applications and any contractual terms. The CPR covers the way in which the product is placed on the market. Crucially, it does not say what class of product should be used in any given circumstance. In some European states, the local regulatory body has defined which class to specify for a specific application, but we are not so fortunate here in the UK. Here, the CPR class specified falls to the specifier. But that doesn’t mean simply specifying the highest class possible is the best option. The fact of the matter is that specifying to what many might consider to be a ‘safe’ level might prove cost prohibitive for the contractor, who may also discover cables to higher classifications scarce to come by. And remember, test procedures to gain even CCA compliance are also costly for manufacturers and can involve lengthy R&D to meet the standard – resulting in compromising safety for cost.

Factoring in different CPR classes

Specifiers considering the emissions of cables when burnt need to choose Low Smoke Halogen Free (LSHF), but beware: A cable may meet Class Eca in CPR terms, but this gives no indication of its toxicity. Stay cautious of ‘LSF’ cables, as the term carries little meaning and often describes PVC-based products. Any product that contains insulation, bedding or jackets of PVC may produce highly toxic fumes when burnt. Given the conflicts specifiers have to wrestle with when selecting cables, I can understand why many may throw their hands up in despair. Interpreting the CPR classes and applying them to cable specification in the real world has proved challenging. While we cannot recommend courses of action, we can offer guidance, clarity and options to help demystify CPR-compliant cable specification. The sector certainly needs it.  FS Cables, fscables.com Interpreting the CPR classes and applying them to cable specification in the real world has proved challenging

Another complicating factor is that cables redesigned to pass higher CPR classes may shift in electrical or data performance and physical properties – and these are factors that may bear down on how effectively they perform or their method of installation. Lower CPR classes focus on the spread of fire, not toxic fume and smoke emissions.

THE RESPONSIBILITY OF RECYCLING With the construction industry having a vital role to play in turning the tide on the UK’s environmental impact, it is important electrical contractors do their bit too. Here, Jon Chamberlain, Sales Director at Marshall-Tufflex, discusses how a meaningful impact can be made with ease.

T

By using post-industrial and postconsumer waste from PVC-U window frames in the production process, the products benefit from an increased robustness, as the grade of PVC-U had originally been designed to withstand external elements. Additional rigorous quality control processes will also ensure a high quality, gloss finish, so each product will look great and there will be the guarantee of colour consistency throughout the project. If a product does not meet the stringent standards required, it can simply be recycled back into chips and undergo further refinement and processing, to reenter the production process.

he construction industry is one of the largest contributors to waste in the UK, creating approximately 120 million tonnes (almost 60% of all UK waste) from construction, demolition and excavation each year – with 25 million tonnes of this sent to landfill. With the devastating impact landfill has on the environment, this is an unacceptable figure and one the entire industry must take responsibility for. According to a report by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released in October 2018, urgent changes are required to tackle climate change – and this must be done within the next decade, before the damage is irreversible. In October 2019, the government introduced a new bill that addresses key environmental issues to lower carbon emissions, improve air quality, manage waste and optimise the use of resources. Specifically mentioned is a move towards a circular economy, and this is where the construction industry could have a major impact. Every little helps, and the sustainability of products at any level should be considered – and this includes the environmental credentials of cable management solutions.

REACH for standards By using postindustrial and postconsumer waste from PVC-U window frames in the production process, the products benefit from an increased robustness

A greener alternative

The lifecycle of a PVC-U window

Understanding the ‘cradle to grave’ impact of a product is crucial to making a more environmentally responsible purchasing decision – and within the cable management sector, a product’s impact is largely down to the origin of the PVC-U used within manufacture.

To put this into context, in a study undertaken by the University of Manchester, a PVC-U window using recycled content offers a 20-fold reduction in embodied carbon, compared to products manufactured with virgin plastic. It’s therefore no surprise that environmentally conscious cable management manufacturers have been seeking ways to introduce more recycled content into their own production processes. For example, Marshall-Tufflex has invested in a compounder machine, which alongside post-industrial waste (waste and off-cuts from PVC-U window production) can also process postconsumer waste (from PVC-U windows removed from buildings at the end of their lives). This enables them to manufacturer PVC-U conduit and trunking systems with an average of 80% recycled content – with some using 100% recycled material. This increased use of recycled material within the manufacturing process prevents the equivalent in weight of 300 double decker buses of PVC-U going to landfill each year. If other manufacturers that used PVC-U in the production process took this stance, it would have a huge positive impact on the environmental performance of the sector – however, realistically this cannot happen unless the demand is there. Electrical contractors therefore have a substantial role to play by considering the recycled content of the products they specify, championing the environmental benefits.

No compromise on quality There is the widespread myth that a ‘greener’ alternative might mean a decline in quality and durability – and this simply isn’t true.

electricalcontractingnews.com

Cable & Cable Management – Marshall-Tufflex.indd 59

@ElecConNews

/electricalcontractingnews

Electrical contractors should also be aware of, and specify products from, manufacturers who meet Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals (REACH) standards, which concerns the production and its use of chemicals and their impact on both the environment and human health. In addition, the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Accreditation demonstrates that manufacturers have taken steps to reduce their impact on the environment throughout their business.

Calculating the benefits It is crucial to increase supply and demand by supporting manufacturers who are totally transparent about the recycled content in its products, and its recycling initiative. Marshall-Tufflex, which boasts an award-winning Reassuringly Recycled campaign, recognised the need for transparent specification. As such, the business has introduced free online tools, such as the Recycled PVC-U Calculator, to accurately illustrate how much recycled content is used in the products specified, and how much PVC-U in kilograms will be saved from going to landfill. It is clear that everyone has a responsibility to prevent further damage to the environment, with the construction industry in particular primed to make a significant impact. By making informed specifications and supporting manufacturers who are vocal about their environmental commitments, the difference would be huge.  Marshall-Tufflex, marshall-tufflex.com

CABLE & CABLE MANAGEMENT

IDEAL INSIGHT INTO CABLE FAULT FINDING A new white paper published by IDEAL Networks has revealed the challenges and demands that end users really face when using cable certifiers. ECN provides a round-up of the findings.

T

he results of more than 60 hours of in-depth research interviews with cable installation companies in the US and Europe, and observations of how installers work when certifying cable installations, are revealed in a new publication entitled Cable certifiers – what really matters? The findings revealed in the white paper include cable certifier usage trends, what cable installers consider the most critical when choosing a certifier and how the current available certification solutions perform for the end user. “In our research, we identified that having an accurate and easy to use fault finder was one of the most important factors when choosing a certifier,” explains Tim Widdershoven, Marketing Director for IDEAL Networks. “However, despite it being so critical, we found that it was one of the areas where certifiers were performing most poorly for users.” “Good cable installations tested with a correctly configured tester should not have many faults but when they do occur, it is important that installers can fix them quickly,” he continues.

Keeping things simple A need for simplicity was also expressed when it comes to setup in order to test the installation. During the research, IDEAL Networks found that technicians may make hundreds of inputs on average for setup. This includes typing the address and labels, selecting standards and moving between functions and configurations.

LanTek IV, launched in 2019, helps installers to save time and improve profitability

60 | April 2020

Cable & Cable Management – IDEAL Networks.indd 60

Having an accurate and easy to use fault finder is one of the most important factors when choosing a certifier

“Cable installers told us that the process of transferring results from their cable certifier can lead to delays, and in some cases lost results.”

“Incorrect setup or misconfiguration can also lead to project delays affecting cashflow, and retesting reduces margins with unforeseen labour costs,” says Widdershoven. “Therefore, the installers we observed were keen to have access to products which make setting up the tester as simple as possible and consider the way that engineers work, not just the standards they are testing to.”

The need for accuracy Cable installers on site also need to be able to accurately record the links tested using the correct naming convention to properly detail location. According to the research, the most significant improvement that customers wanted in this area was a reduction in the time spent correcting errors and adding missing details before submission for warranty for the customer. The white paper states that there is great demand from users for ways to automate this process, and to have more ways to collaborate among teams. “Another thing that cable installers told us time and again was that the process of transferring results from their cable certifier can lead to delays, and in some cases lost results,” says Tim. “The most common feedback from engineers was that they want to be able to ‘press one button’ to send the results back to the office to the job site.” “At the end of the project, they just want to get the results off the tester and back to the office or project manager quickly; the faster they do this, the sooner they can submit the finished project and get paid,” he explains.

electricalcontractingnews.com

Challenges for project managers As well as speaking to cable installers, the research also covered the challenges encountered by project managers. For example, many explained that they must follow a structured formatting and quality checking process when creating reports. This takes a significant amount of time, but assures customer acceptance, warranty approval and quality, which in turn reduces callbacks. The right management software helps minimise the time required to organise reports for customers, helping to ensure payment can be invoiced more quickly. However, satisfaction in this area in the research from IDEAL Networks was low. “These are just a few of the important areas raised in the white paper,” says Tim. “Cable installers work in an industry which is constantly changing, so research like this helps us to develop solutions which genuinely address their biggest day to day challenges. Our LanTEK IV cable certifier, for instance, does exactly this.” LanTek IV, launched in 2019, brings a new standard to the industry, and together with the new IDEAL AnyWare cloud test management platform, helps installers to save time and improve profitability. CABLE & CABLE MANAGEMENT

ENHANCING PERFORMANCE THROUGH PROTECTION Holly Pulham of Securiflex, a cable wholesaler that offers a wide variety of different cables, explains why appropriate cable protection ensures peak performance and enhanced safety.

C

Due to the diverse environments in which they are used, it’s essential that cables are protected against tears and signal damage

able protection is vitally important to ensure the lifespan of a cable. Cables also need to be adequately protected to ensure health and safety, efficiency and durability. Effective cable management and protection can be used to prevent incidents and ensure optimum safety. Tripping is also a common hazard of poorly managed cables. This is especially concerning in public spaces or workplaces where more people may be present. Cable protection and management that is well executed can prevent issues arising. It’ll be much easier to identify the source of an issue if your cables are clearly laid out and identifiable. Organising cables by colourway can help – at Securiflex, we have a range of cables in different colour options for easy management. Tangled cables that become tightly locked with one another can also be a potential fire hazard, so be sure to monitor installations closely. If you need to replace or upgrade cables, having them effectively managed will make the process easier. Cable management needs careful planning. There are several cabling accessories that can aid effective cable management including cable ties, spiral cable wrap, cable conduit and cable clips, to name but a few. At Securiflex, our cables are used for a variety of industries – including electrical, security, data/ telecom, HVAC and construction – so ensuring cables are protected against tears and signal damage is important, as many of these sectors operate on a large scale. Cable trays must not become too full, as this can cause all manner of damage, including posing a fire risk. Cable ties should also be used at an adequate pressure – those that are too tight can cause signal failure in the cables and effect performance. If cables need to be able to pass through wood, metal or other furniture, then grommets should be used to protect cable edges from damage.

62 | April 2020

Cable & Cable Management – Securiflex.indd 62

Established in 1998, Securiflex is now a UK leader in the importation and distribution of specialist cables

“Tangled cables that become tightly locked with one another can also be a potential fire hazard, so be sure to monitor installations closely.”

Cable protection through screening Improving cable performance can be carried out by protecting the inner conductors from electromagnetic interference (more commonly known as ‘crosstalk’). There are a few screening options available which include an overall screen surrounding all pairs/cores. This reduces crosstalk from other cables, while individual screens over each individual pair reduces crosstalk between pairs. The individual and overall screen option combined reduces crosstalk between pairs and electromagnetic interference from other cables. SWA (Armouring) adds mechanical protection and the armour also acts as a screen – reducing crosstalk from other cables. The most common material used in screening is aluminium foil, but fine copper braid can be used.

Effective cable protection To ensure your cables are adequately protected, it’s important to consider the environment in which a cable is being installed. Outdoor cables, for example, will require different protection than those for indoor use. This is due to exposure to the elements, such as water ingress, UV rays, chemicals and rodents. External cable protection is available in a variety of ways. This includes mechanical protection with the addition of armouring (SWA), which is suitable for direct burial applications. Sheath variants include PE (polyethylene), which gives water resistance and UV protection. There are different grades of PE, which are LDPE (low density), MDPE (medium) and HDPE (high density). A cable that is permanently going to be laid in water ideally should be HDPE. However, the thicker the compound, the

electricalcontractingnews.com

less flexible the cable is. PP (polypropylene) gives further strength and rigid composition to the outer sheath. This is commonly known as direct burial (DB) and is suitable for installation in soft ground (i.e. grass, soil or sand). Internal cable protection is also available in a variety of ways. This includes LSZH insulation (Low Smoke Zero Halogen). In the event of a fire, this compound emits low levels of toxic fumes, providing vital time to safely exit the premises. Heat-shrink sleeving is used mostly for permanent installations. It can provide additional insulation and resistance to abrasion, and it also boasts a protective moisture sealant. Once wrapped around a cable installation, the sleeving is subjected to a heat gun in order to reduce the diameter of the tubing to provide a secure and sturdy fitting. Braided sleeving is an expanding braided cable cover, and its usage is harnessing cables.

Post-manufacture cable protection Any standard internal cable can be oversheathed or over-armoured to make it suitable for external or direct burial environments. This does, however, make the cable thicker in diameter, and with the addition of either a polypropylene compound or SWA armouring, a lot less flexible. This is not a particularly cheap option; however, should the cable not be readily available off-the-shelf, this will cut lead times in half. Many manufacturers’ minimum order quantities are anywhere between 5km and 10km, and therefore if you only require 100m then savings can be gained, and wastage is kept to a minimum.  Securiflex, securiflex.co.uk

DRAKA OVERHAULS E-SERIES FIBRE CABLE DESIGN Prysmian Group, a leader in optical fibre core and fibre optic cable manufacturing, has dramatically revised the design of the Draka E-Series fibre cables, which form part of the Draka UC Connect cabling system. The central tube of up to 24 fibre family of cables now comes with a 20% reduction in outer diameters, making it the smallest cable available in its class. The Draka E-Series suite of cables are also the only non-metallic cables with gel-filled tubes that carry Cca and B2ca CPR ratings. Having gel-filled tubes provides true internal and external water-blocking with increased robustness and immunity to mechanical and environmental effects. During installation, the pulling process of optical cables can increase fibre strain, leading to more stress on fibres and ultimately reducing their operational lifetime. To improve ease and reliability of installation, Prysmian has doubled the tensile strength of all the E-Series variants. The metallic armoured design has increased from 1,000N to 3,000N and the gel filled non-metallic armoured from 1,500N to 3,000N.

18TH EDITION-COMPLIANT RETROFIT SURGE PROTECTION UNIT In addition to the range of SPDs in Type 2 and Combined Type 1, 2 and 3, Lewden also has a Retrofit Surge Protection Unit in its consumer units range that meets with the requirements of the 18th Edition regulations (BS7671:2018, section 534). This easy to install, self-contained metal enclosure connects in parallel to the existing consumer unit without any need for modification to the unit. It has been designed for retrofitting application to provide protection of electrical appliances against impulse surges where it is not possible to accommodate an SPD directly within the existing consumer unit due to space limitations. It is primarily suited to installations located in an urban area without an external lightning protection system and fed from an underground power source. Suitable for TN-C-S (PME), TN-S, and TT earthing arrangements, this unit incorporates a Type 2 SPD, offering protection against switching transients and the secondary effects of an indirect lightning strike.

ECOSTAT2 – THE 35% ENERGY SAVING THERMOSTAT Ecostat2 from Prefect Controls is designed specifically for student accommodation to maintain comfort while limiting the amount of energy used for heating. The series includes units with no user controls, for corridors; on/off user control; variable control allowing occupants to choose temperatures within a set range; and PIR models that sense absence or presence and adjust the rooms temperature accordingly. Ecostat2 is only unlocked with a dedicated handset. Temperature parameters are set. Students hit ‘boost’ to warm up, and after a period the unit enters ‘setback’. The PIR senses occupancy, and if a room is empty, the unit resets. If a room is unoccupied for longer periods, frost-mode is engaged. Boost, setback and frost form a ‘three-stage student programme’ which is a favourite with accommodation managers. Ecostat2 reduces heat input if windows are opened. Furthermore, Ecostat2 is proven to reduce energy costs by up to 35%, depending on the building’s insulation and the parameters set.

STANDALONE DALI CONNECTION CENTRE (MDCC) This solution from Metway is designed for use with DALI Ballasts luminaires. This system communicates with each luminaire via the DALI protocol to allow individual grouping of each light fitting, depending on the desired layout. For example, this allows for fittings nearest interactive whiteboards to be grouped and switched separately. Here are some of the other features: Graduated Dimming – this allows for rows of luminaires to dim at different percentages parallel to the window and reduces the need for a photocell per row of lights. Future Proof – via the installation of network cabling and minimal additional control equipment, this option can become a fully communicating system. Plug and play installation – simpler installation with all items supplied with plugs for quick and accurate installation. Simple on-site configuration – the individual set up of each room can be done by the installers using a simple programming remote to group the luminaires as required (Metway commissioning is also available).
