COVID-19 MAKES ITS MARK

elcome to the April issue of ECN, and I trust that you’re all keeping well in these unsettling times. In last month’s comment, I alluded to the early impact of COVID-19 and some of the initial consequences – including supply chain disruption and exhibition postponements – but I don’t think many of us quite anticipated the overall impact that this pandemic would end up having here on British soil. In the four weeks that have passed since our last issue, we’ve seen unprecedented scenes across the UK in our bid to combat the coronavirus – and, writing this from my home office, with ECN playing its part and heeding advice to limit social contact wherever possible – it’s clearly taking a toll on the electrical contracting sector too. Despite aspirations to continue ‘business as usual’, with social distancing measures being encouraged (and potentially enforced by the time you’re reading this), there are significant implications for electrical contractors up and down the country; and those I’ve spoken with have all been affected to some degree, with many raising concerns about what the future holds.

On March 17 – just a few days before pubs, restaurants and other venues were ordered to close by the Government – the ECA, BESA and Select launched an online survey in an attempt to gain an early picture of the anticipated business impact in the engineering services sector. The initial responses reveal that 93% of businesses are concerned, with just over half of engineering services respondents encountering delays and disruptions to current projects. INDUSTRY NEWS ENGINEERING SERVICES FIRMS REACT TO CORONAVIRUS Over nine in 10 engineering services businesses (93%) say they are ‘concerned or very concerned’ about the impact of coronavirus on their business over the next six months, according to initial responses to a major new ECA / BESA / SELECT engineering services survey. Over 60% of respondents are ‘very concerned’ about coronavirus, while perhaps remarkably, 1% of respondents suggested they were ‘unconcerned’. Half of the engineering services respondents (51%) said that they have already encountered ‘delays and disruptions to current projects’, with 61% of larger businesses reporting current disruption. Around half of respondents already report ‘delays and disruption to future work’. Over half of respondents (53%) said they were now ‘preparing business contingency plans’ as a result of developments, a figure which rose to 71% in larger businesses. The most commonly cited business activity in response to coronavirus to date is ‘reducing business travel’ and ‘asking or allowing staff to work from home’, followed by ‘business contingency planning.’ However, around 10% of businesses say they have ‘shut down at certain premises or sites’, and over 10% of respondents also say they are ‘updating their contracts’ and ‘looking into alternative suppliers’. ECA CEO, Steve Bratt, comments, “Coronavirus is already having a significant impact across our industry

and wider society. ECA is aware that many businesses are already encountering work delays, site access issues and cancellations. “We are actively working with industry bodies and Government to represent the concerns and interests of the industry. Key to this is ensuring that Government understands that early, significant and practically useful support is needed to help our industry with cashflow, but also to provide as much certainty as possible”. BESA Director of Legal and Commercial, Debbie Petford, notes, “Though these are just preliminary findings, the sheer scale of the disruption to the sector is alarming. We will be working around the clock to provide as much guidance as possible to our members, and calling on the government to keep providing additional stimulus and support as the situation evolves, to ensure businesses make it to other side of this crisis in one piece.” SELECT Managing Director, Alan Wilson, adds, “This is clearly an extremely worrying time for SELECT members and the wider industry. Each day brings fresh concerns, with the threat of shutdown still looming large. “Like ECA and BESA, we are taking proactive measures to help electrical professionals address their concerns at this unprecedented moment in history. The knock-on effects of this pandemic could be catastrophic for the industry, particularly

when it comes to payments, so it’s essential that vital cash flow continues.” At the time of press, the survey had received over 600 responses from across the industry, including nearly 180 from larger businesses in the sector. The

coronavirus situation is fast-moving and further survey responses are expected to show increasing impact on the industry in the days ahead. ECA, eca.co.uk

EI LIVE! 2020 RESCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER With the coronavirus having extensive implications across the globe, EI Live! 2020 has taken the decision to reschedule its event for October 19-20. The show, which was due to be held in April, is the UK’s only dedicated AV and automation trade show, and organisers report that visitor pre-registrations are at an all-time high. The Smart Building Awards, which were scheduled to take place on April 21, have also been moved. The evening ceremony will now be held on October 19. EI Live! 2020, eiliveshow.com

ABB ADDS CYLON CONTROLS TO ITS SMART BUILDINGS PORTFOLIO ABB has agreed to acquire Cylon Controls. The acquisition enhances ABB Electrification business’ position in the commercial buildings segment. Dublin-headquartered Cylon, which has approximately 100 employees, provides building automation and HVAC control solutions, delivering operational efficiency, energy and comfort solutions for commercial and retail buildings, schools and healthcare facilities. Speaking about the portfolio additions to the smart building business, Oliver Iltisberger, ABB’s Head of Smart Buildings, says, “The acquisition will further enhance our portfolio of solutions for the commercial buildings segment, with a particular focus on delivering new innovations in energy optimisation and comfort.” Sean Giblin, Chief Executive Officer of Cylon, adds, “We are very excited to become part of ABB, a company that shares our commitment and passion for increasing comfort, energy and operational efficiency within buildings.” The parties agreed not to disclose the purchase price. INDUSTRY NEWS REACTION TO EV BUDGET PLEDGE Responding to the Budget pledge of £500m for the rollout of new electric car charging points, Michael Kenyon, Technical Lead at electrical safety expert, Bureau Veritas, comments: “The Chancellor’s announcement to invest a further £500m in the rollout of new rapid electric charging hubs so drivers are never more than 30 miles from being able to charge their car will come as welcome news for motorists and the electrical contracting industry. “The investment reflects the UK’s commitment to meeting its Net Zero emissions pledge through cleaner transport and will include a rapid charging fund to help businesses with the cost of connecting fast charge points to the electricity grid. To target spending from this fund effectively, the Office for Low Emission Vehicles is expected to complete a comprehensive electric vehicle charging infrastructure review. “To create a world-class charging infrastructure, businesses will need to ensure they take a ‘quality first’ approach to installing and connecting these fast charging points, prioritising electrical safety for users and the general public through regular inspection and maintenance. For electrical contractors it represents a huge opportunity for growth in this fast-evolving area. However, the need to upskill, build technical expertise and specialise in this area cannot be overstated.

“This includes deciphering new rules set out in the Amendment 1 to BS 7671:2018, published by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) just last month, detailing changes designed to make the installation of

SCHNEIDER SPECIFICATION TOOL SURPASSES 1,000 CREATIONS

TAMLITE LIGHTING CUTS 10,000KG OF PLASTIC WASTE Tamlite Lighting has announced that it has eradicated more than half a million plastic bags from entering the supply chain over the last 12 months. The independent lighting manufacturer says the move to reduce its reliance on plastic, which has saved the equivalent of 10,000kg of waste in just one year, is part of its ongoing circular economy strategy. The project has seen the company invest in alternative sustainable packaging materials, such as recycled cardboard corners or shredded cardboard. In order to make such substantial savings, plastic packaging has been removed from a number of products, including LED batten and flat panel lighting ranges. With sales of these involving very substantial quantities of fittings every year, the savings rapidly add up. In addition to this, Tamlite is taking steps to ensure that all new products are plastic free, including its new downlight products. “We are witnessing an enormous global shift in attitudes in tackling climate change and protecting natural resources,” says Tamlite’s Managing Director, John Allden. “As a responsible manufacturer, we take pride in leading by example, so it’s incumbent upon us to drive positive change within our operations and processes in a bid to reduce any negative impacts on the environment. “Our aim is to build a circular economy for the lighting sector. We have a responsibility to ensure our processes and products are in line with our commitment to ensuring a healthy planet for all. This is why reducing our reliance on plastic is an important part of our strategy and will help us make real strides in being more sustainable. “We have always acted responsibly with regards to recycling, but we felt it was paramount to remove any non-essential plastic, as well as other non-recyclable materials, from our products. Making this change has had significant benefits, reduces our reliance on landfill, and most importantly, is helping reduce our impact on the planet.”

Following the launch of Schneider Electric’s online specification tool for designers, specifiers and consulting engineers in 2019, the company is now reporting that over 1,000 specifications have been created with the tool. The free online tool aims to make the process of generating specification for tenders quicker, simpler and much easier. It provides a platform for users to create and store their specifications, and instantly access all the information they need on solutions and digital architectures. Available through the company’s specifier/consultant mySchneider Partner Portal, the platform allows users to create specifications from scratch or pre-existing templates. The platform provides simple functionality, allowing its users to take product information from a vast library of industry solutions and quickly drop it into their specification templates. “The new tool brings M&E Design into the digital age,” says Andrew Wakeley, Customer Channel Marketing Manager in the UK for Consultants/Specifiers at Schneider Electric. “Our platform seeks to streamline the process while also being educational. In design, speed is of the essence and the specification tool helps its users get their ideas out the door quickly while giving them back precious time to grow their business and learn. We’re delighted to have reached 1,000 specifications and we expect that number to grow exponentially in the coming years. INDUSTRY NEWS MORE NEEDED TO ENCOURAGE FEMALE APPRENTICES A group of industry bodies have praised the recent rise in female electrical apprenticeships but say more should be done to encourage other women to pick up the tools. The Scottish Joint Industry Board (SJIB), Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT), Select and Unite the Union all welcomed recent figures which showed that 13 female apprentices are currently training to be electricians in 2019-2020, compared to seven in 2018-2019. This increase in female applicants overall in 2019/2020 saw 70% of those applying being taken on to the Electrical Installation Modern Apprenticeship. “In the month that we celebrated both Scottish Apprenticeship Week and International Women’s Day, it’s heartening to see more young women than ever taking up electrical apprenticeships in Scotland,” says Fiona Harper, The Secretary of the SJIB and Director of Employment and Skills at Select. “It’s also heartening to see that all these women are there on merit. Like all apprentices, they were required to pass an assessment before they were accepted onto the apprenticeship programme, and each demonstrated the aptitude and competence to do so. There is clearly a growing realisation among young women

that being an electrical professional is a viable career. “The rise of renewables and the next generation of electrical technology is

making our industry more attractive to would-be electricians of both genders, so it is now up to all of us to tap into this enthusiasm and ensure we keep a

SUPPLY CHAIN PLAYERS BACK NEW DATA POOL A total of 25 leading manufacturers and wholesalers have signed up as Founder Members of EDATA, a new product data pool that is ‘by the industry, for the industry’. EDATA is the latest strategic initiative from the Electrical Distributors’ Association (EDA) under its EDA Data Services banner. E-commerce and digital transformation are inextricably linked to the availability of the highest quality product data, and EDATA offers manufacturers a central ‘single source of truth’ resource for uploading product information, technical data and images which wholesalers can download and serve up on their customer-facing e-commerce channels. Signing up for an initial three-year term, founders have committed to uploading and downloading product data to kick-start the EDATA service. A group made up of representatives from each of the founders will steer the development of EDATA, which will be accessed through annual subscription, with the costs and benefits shared by all who subscribe. Once up and running, EDATA will be opened up to both EDA and non-EDA manufacturers and wholesalers. Margaret Fitzsimons, CEO of the EDA, comments, “It’s fantastic news that these EDA members and affiliated members are backing this new venture and helping us get it off the ground, because it is much needed. Industry-owned data pools are widespread in other markets and sectors; so in this respect, the UK is somewhat behind. CONTRACT NEWS ENERGY-SAVING MAKEOVER FOR BREWERS Goodlight, the UK LED lighting manufacturer, has announced that Brewers Decorator Centres are seeing a visible saving in energy consumption after installing high performance, energy efficient LED lighting solutions. A total of 27,600 sq-ft of showrooms are now illuminated with products from the Goodlight LED range, giving energy savings of 70-80% per fitting, reducing carbon footprint, saving maintenance costs and enhancing the customer experience. Brewers, a specialist in decorating materials, stocks a wide range of wallpapers, paints, varnishes and soft furnishings, supplying decorating products to tradespeople and the general public. The first five stores to upgrade to Goodlight LED lighting were Haslemere, Lewisham, London Victoria, Sevenoaks and Surbiton. Energy hungry fluorescent tubes and metal halide high bays were replaced across the stores with Goodlight G5 LED battens, GX1 LED high bays and Eco LED panels. In addition to the significant energy cost savings, the guaranteed five year, 50,000 hour service life of Goodlight LED luminaires produces considerable maintenance cost savings, compared with the rated 20,000 hour life of typical fluorescent tubes. Paul Dennington, Premises Manager at Brewers, says, “Since installation, our running costs have reduced and the lighting levels across our sales areas have improved dramatically. The Goodlight LED lighting provides bright, welcoming illumination allowing customers to accurately evaluate our products. We are certainly considering future installations.”

FISH ISLAND DEVELOPMENT ENTERS FINAL PHASE Mechanical and electrical building services contractor, J S Wright, has secured a contract worth more than £3 million for the third and final phase of a ground-breaking estate regeneration in London’s Docklands. The company will supply and install all the mechanical services for 165 one to three-bedroom private and affordable apartments at Neptune Wharf in Fish Island Village, Hackney Wick. The phase three apartments will be spread across five buildings with wharf-inspired designs inspired by the warehouse typology of the area’s industrial past. J S Wright was awarded the contract by developer Hill, in association with housing association Peabody, following its completion of the 423 private and affordable homes in the first two phases of the canalside development. The work will involve installing a low-temperature hot water heating system to deliver energy to the apartments from an energy centre already built by J S Wright in the basement car park for phases one and two of the development. Low temperature hot water will be delivered through associated pipework to heat interface units that in turn will feed underfloor heating within each apartment. A boosted cold-water system will also be fitted for the domestic hot and cold-water supply. J S Wright will also install energy efficient mechanical ventilation heat recovery systems that will use the outgoing air from the apartments to heat incoming fresh air, as well as equip all the units and communal areas with dry risers and domestic sprinklers for fire protection. THORN LIGHTING SCORES AT GOL CENTRE CARDIFF Thorn Lighting has provided a full LED refurbishment for the pitch lighting at Cardiff’s Gol Centre, a five-a-side football complex which features 3G pitches and hosts almost 300 teams every week. Initially, the brief was to light one of the pitches so that the results could be assessed before commencing work on the rest of the site. The lighting solution that Thorn provided proved incredibly popular, and the refurbishment took on momentum for the rest of the installation. The existing 400W metal halide fittings highlighting the 11 pitches were constantly blowing out, requiring lamp replacement every three months and failing to provide bright enough illumination for the pitches. The challenge was to ensure that the new LED fittings would have an adequate amount of light spread across the pitch using the same point-for-point positions for the replacements. Thorn’s Areaflood Pro floodlights mounted on eight metre columns proved to be the perfect solution for the application, averaging around 100 lux; where previously, less than 50 lux was achieved in the centre of the pitches. Areaflood Pro is a general-purpose area floodlight with superior optical performance and optimal light control of 0cd at 90 degrees, with minimal spill light, for the comfort of users and spectators. The compact proportions and reduced weight of the floodlights avoids additional structural costs in retrofit installations and maintenance is kept to a minimum thanks to 100,000 hours rated lifetime on both drivers and LEDs. CONTRACT NEWS RIEDEL ASSISTS WITH EDINBURGH HOGMANAY CELEBRATIONS For the third year running, Riedel Communications supplied a comprehensive signal transport and communications backbone for the New Year’s Eve Hogmanay celebration in Edinburgh at the end of 2019. Riedel’s MediorNet provided real-time transport, processing, and routing for all video and audio signals and also enabled critical IP-based systems such as CCTV, internet access, and weather monitoring. Riedel’s

SECURITY SOLUTION FOR NATIONAL HAULAGE COMPANY Founded in 1959 and originally specialising in livestock movements across the UK, the Allelys Group has grown to be one of the largest transport and specialist heavy lift companies in the UK. Having expanded considerably in recent years at its base in Studley, Warwickshire, and occupying a vast amount of land to deal with a growing UK and global client base, Allelys embarked on a programme to increase and upgrade its security. Andy Pym, electrician for the company, sought the recommendation for a suitable CCTV system from local electrical distributor, Moredale, who put him in touch with ESP, one of its key security products suppliers. A site visit by ESP sales manager, Scott Phillimore, was arranged to get a full picture of the requirements so that a suitable CCTV solution could be recommended. The premises house a number of buildings that cater for the various business divisions, including heavy storage, heavy haulage, crane shops, heavy presses and warehousing, as well as the office space for the 50 or so employees based there. Scott recommended products from ESP’s HDView 4MP CCTV range. ESP launched this range to supply the electrical wholesale market with a complete collection of superior quality, high end CCTV products. The range offers an upgrade from 1080p (two megapixel) to 4MP to give users a higher density of pixels to produce a super high definition image clarity. For the Allelys project, multiple DVR’s ranging from four to 16 channels and offering up to 16TB of storage were recommended and installed. The eightchannel systems support up to eight cameras each and offer 4MP live view and recording. For the first time in Hogmanay history, the festival was live streamed to Facebook, YouTube, and the Hogmanay website. Produced by Underbelly, a UK-based live entertainment production company, the multicamera webcast allowed viewers anywhere in the world to enjoy the entire 5.5-hour event from their phones, tablets, or laptops. David Watson, Production Director, Underbelly, comments, “Since Underbelly first produced Edinburgh’s Hogmanay in 2017, we have installed a city centre-wide Riedel network. Over the three years, we have significantly increased the utilisation of the system and it has now become an integral part of the event. The network

facilitates not only the creatively world class show, but is also essential for the crowd safety management and operational success of the event.” Operating over 10km of fibre, Riedel’s MediorNet formed a massive signal transport communications backbone for Hogmanay19, with 16 MediorNet Compact Pro stageboxes deployed at sites throughout Edinburgh. The network was anchored by a MetroN core router, with additional MediorNet MicroN high-density media distribution network devices enabling many different modular configurations. NEW FIRE ALARM TECHNOLOGY FOR HOUSING ASSOCIATION Housing association, The Hyde Group, is utilising Aico’s Ei1000G SmartLink Gateway to provide a solution-focused approach to asset management that assures the safety of its tenants. With over 50,000 homes across London, the south and south-east of England, the Hyde Group is taking a proactive approach to the management of its housing stock. TRAINING CERTIFIED THERMOGRAPHER COURSES LINED UP Thermal imaging cameras are becoming more intelligent and intuitive, allowing professionals across many industries to use thermal in a more efficient and safe manner. However, operator skill is still required to understand the science of thermography, how to operate related equipment and the scope of the applications to accurately interpret findings. The FLIR Infrared Training Center Category 1 course could be an ideal place to start. This four-day course prepares the operator for qualification as a Category 1 certified thermographer, and students learn about the basics of infrared, how to operate the camera under different conditions and for various purposes. Most importantly, they are guided on how to make judgements in the field and identify potential error sources. JTL PARTNERS WITH PHX TRAINING FOR FAST TRACK COURSE JTL, the national training provider for electrical and heating and plumbing apprenticeships, has joined forces with regional training provider, PHX Training, to introduce traineeships designed to help young adults in Cumbria get their first taste of work. This 12-week course, which has been organised by PHX Training, will support young people aged 16-24 years to acquire the functional skills needed to succeed in the workplace. It is also designed to develop their English and maths, as well as enhancing their basic employability skills including CV writing, interview techniques, timekeeping and teamwork. PHX Training will be delivering classroom-based activity at their training centre, located in Victoria Place, whilst the nearby JTL Carlisle training facility will be providing practical sessions. PHX Training will also be supporting learners to acquire four-week work placements, which will ensure the traineeships provide learners with a varied programme of high-quality workbased learning and on the job experience. ith increasing consumer demand for electric vehicles (EVs), manufacturers face the challenge of creating high-performing vehicles on a mass scale. While high-power charging infrastructure is essential, there is also a vital demand on the performance of high voltage (HV) distribution within the EV in order to efficiently conduct, hold, distribute and use electric power after charging. BUILDINGS OF THE FUTURE The Scottish Government has announced new climate emergency projects that seek to improve performance in buildings old and new. ECN takes an in-depth look and explains how Schneider Electric will be involved.

t the beginning of March, Ivan McKee, the Scottish Trade Minister, announced funding for two new climate projects. The projects will demonstrate businesses, academic and public sector collaboration in transitioning the country to a low carbon economy and will be spearheaded by the University of Edinburgh and the University of Glasgow in collaboration with Schneider Electric. Following the Scottish Government’s £500,000 climate emergency collaboration project investment, the two largest universities in the country have been tasked with improving existing and future building’s performance with Schneider Electric’s smart building technologies.

Improving building design The University of Edinburgh’s project, titled ‘Building capacity for zero and low carbon innovation in construction and the built environment’, will aim to improve the way buildings of the future are designed and built to reduce the impact on the climate. It also wishes to demonstrate that a 25% energy reduction in peak demand can be achieved by advanced analytics of building performance. Project partners will work together to improve the way buildings are designed and constructed in the future to minimise their impact on the climate. They will also develop and test tools that reduce emissions by improving the energy performance of buildings once they become occupied. Dave Gorman, Director for Social Responsibility and Sustainability at the University of Edinburgh, comments, “The severity of the threat posed by climate change and the urgency with which responses are needed cannot be overstated. As one of the biggest global emitters of carbon, emissions from construction and the built environment must be significantly reduced if we are to reach net zero emissions in Scotland by 2045.

Predicted energy savings The announcement was made in Glasgow at a tenement property in the city where a high-tech, green retrofit will be evaluated to understand how to reduce carbon emissions from existing housing stock. Project leaders predict there is the potential for energy savings of between 75% and 90%. The University of Edinburgh project aims to increase capacity for zero and low carbon innovation in construction and the built environment. David Evans, Schneider Electric’s Education Segment Lead, notes, “We are delighted to be part of this project that will help define the future of smart buildings in Scotland. We have two priorities: first, we will look at how buildings technologies can be applied to new build projects to minimise the carbon burden of estate expansion; and secondly, we need to look at how technology can reduce carbon emissions from existing buildings.”

FROM GARAGE START-UP TO GLOBAL PLAYER As lighting controls manufacturer, BEG, celebrates 45 years in business, Friedrich Brück, its Managing Director and Founder, opens up in this exclusive interview – and explains how a major fire in 1979 nearly cost him everything.

How did you get the company started?

Friedrich Brück: At the beginning of the 1970s, I headed up the German branch of a French battery manufacturer. One day, a customer came to me with an emergency light for which he needed something quite specific. My employer felt that the volume required was far too small, but the customer’s requirement just stuck in my mind. So, I offered to convert his emergency lights myself. To start with, I produced small quantities in my living room after I finished work. When demand grew, I quit my job, founded my own company and rented a house with a garage in my hometown of Lindlar. Then I developed my own first emergency lights, which were a real innovation at that time. When the garage became too small, I moved into our first company building in the industrial area of Klause, Lindlar. This area is now the location of today’s company headquarters, of course, which are rather larger than in those early days!

Did you have an idea back then about what your company could become?

FB: I didn‘t have a business plan at all. Since the beginning, my starting point has been what the customer wanted. The words ‘doesn’t exist’ or ‘doesn’t work’ just aren’t in my vocabulary. There is a solution for every problem and the right sensor technology for every room. If a customer can’t find the perfect solution in our portfolio, we offer bespoke solutions. Such orders always take me back to those early days, except now a special development department takes care of the implementation.

The core product range of BEG Lighting Controls today are occupancy and motion detectors. But when you started to sell motion detectors, this was an almost unknown product on the German market wasn’t it? FB: That’s true. We were the first to develop a motion detector for triggering alarm systems. This gave rise to the idea of switching lights outdoors as well. It used to be thought that this was impossible because of the many sources of interference. I was convinced that it was just a question of the right technology. My son Dietmar and I tinkered for a long time and then, in 1986, we were able to launch the very first Luxomat on the market. It could switch the light depending on movement. Today, this is a standard feature, but back then it was a revolution.

Today, BEG Lighting Controls customers are exclusively electrical wholesalers. Why don’t you also sell directly to end customers? FB: We haven’t always followed this path. In the beginning, I delivered the lights to retailers, who then equipped their projects. At the beginning of the 1980s, I started to build up contacts with wholesalers. Little by little, business relationships and trust developed and since then we moved to the three-stage distribution channel that we have committed to now for over 25 years. We train wholesaler employees through our field service team. Our current high-tech products require a trained specialist partner who can advise the customer competently.

The company has achieved considerable growth, particularly in the last decade. What is the secret of your success?

When you look back on the company history, what were the biggest obstacles you had to overcome to achieve today’s success? FB: The biggest setback in the company’s history was in 1979. One night, our company building, including both the production and residential buildings, burned down. My family and I were able to leave the house at the last moment with only the clothes on our backs. It is very difficult to make a new start after such a catastrophe, and I was lucky that we were supported by people who believed in our ideas and made reconstruction possible.

FB: We made a ground-breaking step towards today’s success some 20 years ago, when we decided to take sales into our own hands. Before then, I worked with commercial agencies, which we gradually replaced with our own teams. The first was in France, where our commercial agency was based and we soon dropped out of their range. So, to overcome this we founded our first foreign branch, which is still managed by my first French employee. This was followed by the UK, which is also managed by my first employee there, Paul Jones. In the last 10 years, the growing trend towards energy saving and building automation has helped us to grow considerably. Today, there is hardly a new commercial building without automation.

With the success of this automation, more and more competitors are also entering the market. How is BEG Lighting Controls holding its own against the big players? FB: In contrast to the large companies, we have specialised in occupancy and motion detectors. We don’t just have a few standard detectors that cover the standard requirements, but we look for the perfect solution for every need, which then is built into the products. This is how we have become experts over the years, which is also reflected in the size of our sales teams. All field staff are from electrical engineering and support the customers from the first idea to the implementation on site. This makes us special in the market and inspires our customers.

What is the outlook for the future?

FB: Since 2014, we have been focusing on networked systems. Today’s customers no longer want to just control the light, they want to implement their entire automatic home via one system and control it from their mobile phone. That’s why we are increasingly focusing on the KNX and DALI standards, and we also have our own systems such as BEG DALISYS and BEG DALI LINK in our portfolio. BEG Lighting Controls, beg-luxomat.com

ccording to the latest report from AMA Research, the total UK electronic security market of products – CCTV, electronic access control and intruder alarms – and associated services was estimated at approximately £2.35bn in 2017 and is expected to grow at 12% per year. Market growth is being driven by technological advancements boosting replacement demand, and improving new build and RMI expenditure across key market sectors. CCTV accounts for the majority of the market in value terms, with a 52% share. This sector has seen the greatest levels of innovation and new product development, and with technology also becoming more affordable, this is leading to a continued shift away from analogue to digital products.

Globally, the overall access control market is expected to grow from $7.5 billion in 2018 to $12.1 billion by 2024. The growth of the market is driven by high adoption of access control solutions owing to increasing crime rates globally; technological advancements and deployment of wireless technology in security systems; and adoption of IoT-based security systems with cloud computing platforms. Like the electronic security sector, a key feature of the fire protection market is technology and increasing integration with fire and security systems. A key driver of innovation in this sector has been the industry’s desire to continue reducing the likelihood and number of false alarms, and the majority of innovations have been in detection technology rather than suppression. Developments have included improved capability of sensor technology in smoke detectors that can detect more quickly, with greater reliability and with a greater degree of differentiation between different types of smoke and vapours. Two-Wire fire alarm systems are based on standard conventional system technology. Unlike standard conventional four wired systems where the detectors, call points and alarm devices for each zone are wired on separate circuits, MAGDUO utilises intelligent Two-Wire technology, which allows all devices to be wired on the same set of two-core zone cables back to the control panel – enabling it to use a single circuit per zone both for detection and to power the sounders. This advanced technology can reduce both installation and material costs. There are some 25 separate products in the MAGDUO range, including two, four and eight-zone fire panels as well as repeater panels – with the four and eight zone panels able to support up to eight repeater panels. A FlexiPoint detector brings further versatility and convenience to the system. As well as offering seven different modes of fire detection, including combined heat and smoke, it is also available with an inbuilt sounder or

inbuilt sounder strobe, which will assist with a compact install solution (as the detector and sounder is allin-one as opposed to separate units). Due to the different options, FlexiPoint offers convenience for wholesalers and installers, as they will not be required to carry a complete range of devices. Another key benefit is the built-in Alarm Confirmation feature, which allows the selection of a confirmation period for individual detectors; and therefore confirms if the smoke/heat detected is an actual fire – and not a false alarm. With its adaptability, speed of installation and cost-effectiveness, MAGDUO is providing an ideal fire alarm solution for a range of small to medium sized projects such as restaurants, retail outlets, schools, offices, apartments and hotels.

Alongside wired systems Wireless systems are a great way to expand and enhance existing wired fire alarm systems. For example, The National Trust adopts the approach of using hard-wired systems where possible, and integrated wireless system components where wiring and access is more difficult or detrimental to the building preservation. This is a useful strategy in many other environments too. In some cases, wiring to an outbuilding or storeroom may be impossible due to a hazardous environment. In this scenario, utilising a wireless system would be ideal. The wired loop would include a translator, as this module is used to communicate with the wireless devices. Having a simple addition to a wired loop that doesn’t interfere with the integrity of the system is essential. Schools are another common application for wireless systems, where upgrades undertaken by the school could affect the fire system. This means that a solution

needs to be put in place that protects the rest of the school whilst also protecting those working on the upgrades. A wireless system could be temporally adopted, housed in the working area, to provide protection without having to compromise or interfere with the existing wired loop. This approach provides complete protection in the most professional, convenient and cost-effective way possible. Naturally, it also allows smaller, simple adhoc system add-ons to existing systems to be completed without detailed planning or building disruption, and with the minimum amount of time and fuss.

Temporary structures Wireless systems are also great solutions used for temporary structures such as marques at festivals and other events, or for temporary premises whilst under construction. This was the case at TwentyTwo, a 62-storey building in Bishopsgate, London, comprising 1.275 million square feet of office space, over 100,000 sq-ft of leisure and social space, including restaurants, art galleries, a gym and a spa.

An added benefit is that the devices in a wireless system can also be removed for any maintenance work, or in case there are any modifications happening in the building or worksite. If any of the devices in the wireless alarm system require updating, it is very easy to replace the old one with a new device. This also helps to maintain the integrity of the fire alarm system.

Training and support Wireless fire alarms systems are ideal solutions for almost every location; they are reusable, reliable and scalable. What do Central Power Supplies (CPS) contribute to emergency lighting systems?

Safety systems have always been important, but the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire really emphasised the need for more robust equipment and processes in buildings across the UK. Protecting residents, inhabitants, and visitors must always be paramount – and in a disaster situation, systems such as emergency lighting play a key role, guiding people to fire exits and helping them make their way to safety. CPSs (also known as static inverters) are a vital component of emergency lighting systems. They’re designed to offer the best possible performance in emergency situations, and while they may appear to be similar but more costly than an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), there are important differences that provide peace of mind that your building’s occupants and visitors will be safe and sound within its walls. Both types of systems integrate batteries, chargers, alarms, circuitry, and instrumentation, and can be designed to provide three hours of power for all emergency lighting lamps and luminaries, with a response time of no more than five seconds.

Why don’t UPS systems work as well as CPSs?

What rules and regulations govern central power supplies?

While a CPS and a UPS will both provide backup power in the event that mains power goes down, UPS systems are seen as offering lower cost. This can be enticing to contractors and consultants on a tight budget. But safety can’t be compromised. The value that CPSs provide is that they have dramatically higher overload protection than UPS systems, meaning they’re better equipped to handle unexpected high fault currents that can arise in the immediate aftermath of an explosion or a fire. CPSs are rated to provide power to operate a building’s main switchgear before supplying up to 180 minutes of fail-safe power for emergency lighting systems. For example, the Emergi-Lite EMEX battery system is specified to deliver three and a half times the power of its output rating. This gives it the capability to clear fault currents and disruptions. Without the same level of overload protection performance that is built into a CPS, a UPS may not work as expected in the event of a physical disaster, because it would not be able to provide switching power required for the main switchgear to clear high fault currents. Unless it is specified as an uprated version, a UPS doesn’t have the ability to operate a switchgear, and why would it? It’s designed to provide backup power in data centres and telecoms installations – supporting cooling systems, electronic loads, and supplying enough power to bridge the period between the beginning and end of an outage. UPS units also regular power quality by absorbing voltage spikes and sags to protect high-value server racks and electronics, but they are not specifically designed for emergency power scenarios – they don’t have the power to switch the main switchgear, and therefore aren’t as reliable for emergency lighting. Essentially, a UPS system has a response time of minutes. A CPS system can respond in seconds. In an emergency situation, that can be the difference between a nuisance and a tragedy.

The UK uses a number of different standards for emergency lighting, chiefly the BS EN 50171 standard, which covers central power supplies. UPS systems don’t tend to meet this standard without a contractor uprating them, whereas CPSs are designed to meet them from the outset to be fit for purpose as far as emergency lighting systems are concerned.

Are there any other differences? The other main difference is that a specially designed CPS can also help building managers meet government regulations for testing and reporting. There has never been more scrutiny on safety systems in buildings and it is vital that records are maintained – but manual testing of safety systems is a costly, time-consuming process. As a result, the latest generation of CPS integrates software and electronics that will look after periodic testing and record keeping in adherence to the IEC 62034 standard for automatic testing. This feature will run tests on the lighting circuits on a CPS to ensure they are operating as they should be. Essentially, during this process, a software controller will duplicate the conditions of a power cut and check emergency lighting circuits to find out if everything’s working properly. The system then records and uploads test results to building management systems such as LonWorks and BACnet and will send an alert if it detects a fault. In comparison, a standard UPS system will not have this functionality as a standard option – so will require additional engineering time and effort to set up and commission. As a result, their testing and reporting capabilities are another good example of why CPSs are better from a physical safety and from a cost standpoint. They might cost more upfront, but they’ll save your building money and time in the long run. A CPS is about more than performance – it’s about peace of mind. ABB, new.abb.com/uk

any people and organisations, including landlords and tenants themselves, are responsible for checking and improving fire safety in residential properties. While tenants are responsible for ensuring that they don’t create a fire hazard in their homes, landlords of residential buildings have a legal duty to ensure that a fire risk assessment is carried out so that any fire risks and hazards are removed or reduced as far as possible. One of the ways this can be achieved is by adding an extra layer of protection against electrical fires. Over the past five years, in England alone, there have been over 65,000 fires from an electrical origin, but across the UK the figure is even higher.

Eliminating arc faults One of the sources of these electrical fires is the hidden, but highly dangerous, arc faults. Electrical fires caused by arc faults typically occur at poorly made or loosening connections that overheat, in damaged leads and cables, or through old, weak and failing cable insulation. Dave Enefer, Product Manager (Crabtree) at Electrium, comments: “The 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations sets out requirements for electrical installations in the UK, including requirements for protection of persons, livestock and property against the risk from fires that may be generated and propagated in electrical installations. Requirements include protecting against fire caused by insulation faults, high temperature and sparks and arcs.” Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs) can reduce the likelihood of electrical fires from these conditions by detecting the arcing conditions before the overheating and ignition of flammable materials occurs. Specifiers and installers can now improve electrical safety, without any extra effort, by using the Starbreaker combined AFDD-RCBO.

This innovative new product integrates arc fault detection with RCD and MCB capability in a revolutionary single DIN module, delivering maximum safety in the minimum footprint. The new Starbreaker Mini AFDD overcomes these barriers by combining all three layers of protection in one DIN module.

Using digital technology to constantly monitor circuit conditions, the Starbreaker Mini AFDD is able to distinguish between ‘operational sparking’ – for example, in washing machines and vacuum cleaner motors – and abnormal activity that could denote a potentially dangerous event. Complying fully with the requirements of BS7671, this single module AFDD is a two-pole switching device which will totally isolate any faulty circuit or appliance, ensuring peace of mind for installers, homeowners and investors. Longer-lasting lighting LED lamps and luminaires rated at 50,000 hours last three times longer than typical fluorescent lights, giving further savings to site operators. When Goodlight replaced the lighting at the Liverpool Street station concourse, maintenance teams noticed there was a lot of discolouration around the lamps and reflectors, caused by heat produced by the old fluorescent lamps and control gear. This illustrates both the amount of waste heat generated and the issues it was causing. The station’s new LED lighting was estimated to use about half the energy of the old lights, with an improvement in Lux – from approximately 75 Lux to 210 Lux – thanks to the new installation.

Remote management To maximise these energy savings, owners can install a smart lighting control system, such as Light Boss, which connects to luminaires wirelessly from a single interface, allowing any organisation to monitor, automate, control and report on all connected lighting. Automated lighting networks can radically reduce energy consumption whilst delivering optimal lighting performance. Simple controls can be connected to all luminaires with occupancy and daylight detection and presence detectors. Remote systems can be coupled with infrared cameras to allow for security management as well. Some smart LED lighting control systems, including Light Boss, report on energy consumption, providing self-test emergency light monitoring, ideal for lighting maintenance facilitators and providers, and allowing operators to check for faults remotely. Energy consumption can be of concern for facilities managers during the dark winter months when demands on lighting are greater. Typical savings when

automated systems are combined with LED luminaires stand between 60-95%, depending on its application, proving they radically reduce energy consumption whilst delivering optimal lighting performance.

Weatherproof and retrofittable LED luminaires ideally suit the varied demands of the outdoors. In a harsher environment, light fittings may be harder for maintenance managers to access, adding additional complications to installation. Retrofitting makes installation a lot simpler. LED luminaires that can be retrofitted, such as our G360 LED SON replacement lamps in 20W, 30W and 60W, are perfect for installation in bollards, globes, street lighting lamp heads or canopies. The projects: Handrail, stairway lighting With regards to the handrails and stairway lighting, the goal here is to encourage efficient bi-directional passenger flows, improve space allocation and regulate walking speeds. The approach was to install pulsing handrail lighting to indicate direction and pace on the stairway. Furthermore, coloured LED lights were placed at the top of the staircase to align people descending. The trial was evaluated with this series of research questions: Do the lights function as intended? Do passengers move up and down the appropriate side of the stairway? Do the stairways clear quicker during busy times? Are there any improvements in passenger experience? Customers and staff were interviewed, and observers took photos to document results.

The result Research has shown that lighting can influence behaviour, speed and the movement of people. Many stations are already upgrading their functional lighting to LEDs to save energy, but LED lighting, with intelligent control functionality, has further reaching potential.

Proof of concept The University of Nottingham’s Human Factors team and Geospatial Institute led a research study to identify the typical movement-related issues a station faces. They then conducted an extensive review of lighting research literature and reported effects of lighting upon behaviour/mood. This led to the identification of clear opportunities for using light to influence movement behaviours. As a result, FirstGroup agreed for a proof of concept trial site at Chippenham Station, and the project was funded by the Department for Transport and delivered through a competition run by InnovateUK: Accelerating Innovation in Rail 4 (AIR4). DW Windsor, a British designer and manufacturer of exterior lighting solutions, led the project, working with sister company Urban Control to develop new wireless, connected lights and sensors that are controlled through cloud-based software.

The projects: platforms For the station’s platforms, the aim was to reduce dwell time and improve customer experience and safety; providing intuitive information to customers on where to stand to board the train and improve the flow of passengers off the trains and on the platform.

DW Windsor used Gobo projected lighting on the platform to indicate to passengers where to stand in alignment with a carriage door, allowing a freer flow of passengers disembarking. The trial was evaluated by the University with a series of research questions, including: Do the lights function as intended? Do passengers respond to the lighting/move to stand for the train? Do passengers distribute evenly along the platform? Do passengers appreciate the lighting intervention? Is there more orderly boarding? A combination of observations (both direct and indirect), interviews with customers and staff and Wi-Fi sniffing data were used to measure success.

The result The initial results are extremely encouraging. People did seem to notice the lights (i.e. looked up – looked back, looked up – looked along) and a small proportion of people used the lights to stand in the correct place. There were several types of interactions with the lights. Responses were categorised into five major response types: • The participant is positioned in an area from which it would be difficult to see the light and/or they are turned away from the lights. • The participant is positioned in an area in which it would be easy to see the lights, but for whatever reason (for example, they are using their phone), they do not notice the lights.

Survey responses indicated that passengers understood the purpose of the lighting. It was found that the lights were more visible during darkness or partial light – ideal for high commuter times – but the movement effect was strongest around dawn. Several incidents were noted where passengers predominantly used the stairway as directed. Some people were observed moving from one side to the other after observing the lights. In conclusion, the lights were noticeable and functioned as intended. People responded to the lights and some understood the intended reaction, while others thought they were to inspire use of the handrail, which encourages safer usage and movement. Staff found the lights useful as a device to back up their suggestions on how to use the stairway. Nick Coad, Insetting Consultant, working with Urban Control, states, “There was so much interest in our demonstration that it shows that the market is ready for a change. The beauty of these solutions is that they are not limited to rail alone, and they can be applied anywhere crowds need to be influenced. The application possibilities are extensive, from football stadiums to music concerts.” Stuart Parker, FirstGroup, Property Director, comments, “This has been a very exciting project to be involved in. Making terminations faster Once the proper order is confirmed, the FT45 tool crimps and trims the cable in one step, enabling conductors to be cut flush with the end face of the connector; thereby making terminations faster. No protrusions or small lengths of conductor remain beyond the plastic face of the connector, which minimises accidental shorting of conductors or inadvertent contact in plug jacks. Performance is improved because the cable is fully seated into the connector and connector waste is virtually eliminated. This is particularly useful when installing RJ45 plugs at the end of links which connect directly to CCTV and access control systems, especially on projects involving large office buildings or locations where fault investigation can be difficult – such as externally mounted IP CCTV cameras, for example. The FT-45 can also be used when working with patch cords in IP CCTV installations, as well as for fitting IP access controls. It makes installing extended patch cords easier – to enable video conferencing, for example – and can also be used to create a cat6 cable backbone for linking data cabinets together.

The versatile tool simplifies terminations and increases first time success rates. The single crimp cavity for RJ-45 / 8-position connectors is capable of crimping IDEAL feed-thru, standard, shielded and unshielded connectors for CAT5e, CAT6 and CAT6A, allowing users to control costs by easily maintaining a single crimp tool, instead of purchasing a new one for different types of RJ-45 connectors. NAVIGATING THE CABLE SPECIFICATION MINEFIELD When it comes to the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and cables, there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution. Daniel Butterfield, Head of UK Sales & Export at FS Cables, explains more.

hat a minefield cable specification is. Specifiers and installers have my sympathies. In July 2017, the original Construction Product Directive (CPR) was expanded to include performance specifications relating to how a cable reacts to fire. The revised legislation aimed to harmonise the specifications across all EU member states via the Euroclasses universal classification.

Just to recap, the key aims of the Construction Products Regulation in relation to cable are twofold: The first aim is to standardise classification of combustible materials used in the building industry; and the second is to ensure designers and installers are more aware of the contribution cable products make to the spread of fire. There’s little doubt that CPR’s contribution to fire safety is seen as a positive one. But often, the way in which CPR has been implemented and interpreted has simply served to spread confusion and a lack of understanding across the UK construction sector. The 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations recognises that where applicable, cables need to meet CPR requirements and carry a Euroclass for fire performance. However, it does not specify or recommend which Euroclass to use in an environment or application, nor does it outlaw using cables that emit toxic fumes and smoke in the event of fire.

Specifiers and installers need to ensure the cables they select are appropriate for the fire risks in the building or applications and any contractual terms. The CPR covers the way in which the product is placed on the market. Crucially, it does not say what class of product should be used in any given circumstance. In some European states, the local regulatory body has defined which class to specify for a specific application, but we are not so fortunate here in the UK. Here, the CPR class specified falls to the specifier. But that doesn’t mean simply specifying the highest class possible is the best option. The fact of the matter is that specifying to what many might consider to be a ‘safe’ level might prove cost prohibitive for the contractor, who may also discover cables to higher classifications scarce to come by. And remember, test procedures to gain even CCA compliance are also costly for manufacturers and can involve lengthy R&D to meet the standard – resulting in compromising safety for cost.

Factoring in different CPR classes

Specifiers considering the emissions of cables when burnt need to choose Low Smoke Halogen Free (LSHF), but beware: A cable may meet Class Eca in CPR terms, but this gives no indication of its toxicity. Stay cautious of ‘LSF’ cables, as the term carries little meaning and often describes PVC-based products. Any product that contains insulation, bedding or jackets of PVC may produce highly toxic fumes when burnt. Given the conflicts specifiers have to wrestle with when selecting cables, I can understand why many may throw their hands up in despair. Interpreting the CPR classes and applying them to cable specification in the real world has proved challenging. While we cannot recommend courses of action, we can offer guidance, clarity and options to help demystify CPR-compliant cable specification. The sector certainly needs it. Another complicating factor is that cables redesigned to pass higher CPR classes may shift in electrical or data performance and physical properties – and these are factors that may bear down on how effectively they perform or their method of installation. THE RESPONSIBILITY OF RECYCLING With the construction industry having a vital role to play in turning the tide on the UK’s environmental impact, it is important electrical contractors do their bit too. Here, Jon Chamberlain, Sales Director at Marshall-Tufflex, discusses how a meaningful impact can be made with ease.

Additional rigorous quality control processes will also ensure a high quality, gloss finish, so each product will look great and there will be the guarantee of colour consistency throughout the project. If a product does not meet the stringent standards required, it can simply be recycled back into chips and undergo further refinement and processing, to reenter the production process.

he construction industry is one of the largest contributors to waste in the UK, creating approximately 120 million tonnes (almost 60% of all UK waste) from construction, demolition and excavation each year – with 25 million tonnes of this sent to landfill. With the devastating impact landfill has on the environment, this is an unacceptable figure and one the entire industry must take responsibility for. According to a report by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released in October 2018, urgent changes are required to tackle climate change – and this must be done within the next decade, before the damage is irreversible. In October 2019, the government introduced a new bill that addresses key environmental issues to lower carbon emissions, improve air quality, manage waste and optimise the use of resources. Specifically mentioned is a move towards a circular economy, and this is where the construction industry could have a major impact. Every little helps, and the sustainability of products at any level should be considered – and this includes the environmental credentials of cable management solutions.

Understanding the ‘cradle to grave’ impact of a product is crucial to making a more environmentally responsible purchasing decision – and within the cable management sector, a product’s impact is largely down to the origin of the PVC-U used within manufacture.

To put this into context, in a study undertaken by the University of Manchester, a PVC-U window using recycled content offers a 20-fold reduction in embodied carbon, compared to products manufactured with virgin plastic. It’s therefore no surprise that environmentally conscious cable management manufacturers have been seeking ways to introduce more recycled content into their own production processes. For example, Marshall-Tufflex has invested in a compounder machine, which alongside post-industrial waste (waste and off-cuts from PVC-U window production) can also process postconsumer waste (from PVC-U windows removed from buildings at the end of their lives). This enables them to manufacturer PVC-U conduit and trunking systems with an average of 80% recycled content – with some using 100% recycled material. This increased use of recycled material within the manufacturing process prevents the equivalent in weight of 300 double decker buses of PVC-U going to landfill each year. If other manufacturers that used PVC-U in the production process took this stance, it would have a huge positive impact on the environmental performance of the sector – however, realistically this cannot happen unless the demand is there. Electrical contractors therefore have a substantial role to play by considering the recycled content of the products they specify, championing the environmental benefits.

Electrical contractors should also be aware of, and specify products from, manufacturers who meet Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals (REACH) standards, which concerns the production and its use of chemicals and their impact on both the environment and human health. In addition, the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Accreditation demonstrates that manufacturers have taken steps to reduce their impact on the environment throughout their business.

Calculating the benefits It is crucial to increase supply and demand by supporting manufacturers who are totally transparent about the recycled content in its products, and its recycling initiative. Marshall-Tufflex, which boasts an award-winning Reassuringly Recycled campaign, recognised the need for transparent specification. As such, the business has introduced free online tools, such as the Recycled PVC-U Calculator, to accurately illustrate how much recycled content is used in the products specified, and how much PVC-U in kilograms will be saved from going to landfill. It is clear that everyone has a responsibility to prevent further damage to the environment, with the construction industry in particular primed to make a significant impact. The findings revealed in the white paper include cable certifier usage trends, what cable installers consider the most critical when choosing a certifier and how the current available certification solutions perform for the end user. “In our research, we identified that having an accurate and easy to use fault finder was one of the most important factors when choosing a certifier,” explains Tim Widdershoven, Marketing Director for IDEAL Networks. “However, despite it being so critical, we found that it was one of the areas where certifiers were performing most poorly for users.” “Good cable installations tested with a correctly configured tester should not have many faults but when they do occur, it is important that installers can fix them quickly,” he continues.

Keeping things simple A need for simplicity was also expressed when it comes to setup in order to test the installation. During the research, IDEAL Networks found that technicians may make hundreds of inputs on average for setup. This includes typing the address and labels, selecting standards and moving between functions and configurations.

“Incorrect setup or misconfiguration can also lead to project delays affecting cashflow, and retesting reduces margins with unforeseen labour costs,” says Widdershoven. “Therefore, the installers we observed were keen to have access to products which make setting up the tester as simple as possible and consider the way that engineers work, not just the standards they are testing to.”

The need for accuracy Cable installers on site also need to be able to accurately record the links tested using the correct naming convention to properly detail location. According to the research, the most significant improvement that customers wanted in this area was a reduction in the time spent correcting errors and adding missing details before submission for warranty for the customer. The white paper states that there is great demand from users for ways to automate this process, and to have more ways to collaborate among teams. “Another thing that cable installers told us time and again was that the process of transferring results from their cable certifier can lead to delays, and in some cases lost results,” says Tim. “The most common feedback from engineers was that they want to be able to ‘press one button’ to send the results back to the office to the job site.” “At the end of the project, they just want to get the results off the tester and back to the office or project manager quickly; the faster they do this, the sooner they can submit the finished project and get paid,” he explains.

Challenges for project managers As well as speaking to cable installers, the research also covered the challenges encountered by project managers. For example, many explained that they must follow a structured formatting and quality checking process when creating reports. This takes a significant amount of time, but assures customer acceptance, warranty approval and quality, which in turn reduces callbacks. The right management software helps minimise the time required to organise reports for customers, helping to ensure payment can be invoiced more quickly. However, satisfaction in this area in the research from IDEAL Networks was low. “These are just a few of the important areas raised in the white paper,” says Tim. “Cable installers work in an industry which is constantly changing, so research like this helps us to develop solutions which genuinely address their biggest day to day challenges. able protection is vitally important to ensure the lifespan of a cable. Cables also need to be adequately protected to ensure health and safety, efficiency and durability. Effective cable management and protection can be used to prevent incidents and ensure optimum safety. Tripping is also a common hazard of poorly managed cables. This is especially concerning in public spaces or workplaces where more people may be present. Cable protection and management that is well executed can prevent issues arising. It’ll be much easier to identify the source of an issue if your cables are clearly laid out and identifiable. If you need to replace or upgrade cables, having them effectively managed will make the process easier. Cable management needs careful planning. There are several cabling accessories that can aid effective cable management including cable ties, spiral cable wrap, cable conduit and cable clips, to name but a few. Cable trays must not become too full, as this can cause all manner of damage, including posing a fire risk. Cable protection through screening Improving cable performance can be carried out by protecting the inner conductors from electromagnetic interference (more commonly known as ‘crosstalk’). There are a few screening options available which include an overall screen surrounding all pairs/cores. This reduces crosstalk from other cables, while individual screens over each individual pair reduces crosstalk between pairs. The individual and overall screen option combined reduces crosstalk between pairs and electromagnetic interference from other cables. SWA (Armouring) adds mechanical protection and the armour also acts as a screen – reducing crosstalk from other cables. The most common material used in screening is aluminium foil, but fine copper braid can be used.

Effective cable protection To ensure your cables are adequately protected, it’s important to consider the environment in which a cable is being installed. Outdoor cables, for example, will require different protection than those for indoor use. This is due to exposure to the elements, such as water ingress, UV rays, chemicals and rodents. External cable protection is available in a variety of ways. This includes mechanical protection with the addition of armouring (SWA), which is suitable for direct burial applications. Sheath variants include PE (polyethylene), which gives water resistance and UV protection. There are different grades of PE, which are LDPE (low density), MDPE (medium) and HDPE (high density). A cable that is permanently going to be laid in water ideally should be HDPE. However, the thicker the compound, the

less flexible the cable is. PP (polypropylene) gives further strength and rigid composition to the outer sheath. This is commonly known as direct burial (DB) and is suitable for installation in soft ground (i.e. grass, soil or sand). Internal cable protection is also available in a variety of ways. This includes LSZH insulation (Low Smoke Zero Halogen). In the event of a fire, this compound emits low levels of toxic fumes, providing vital time to safely exit the premises. Heat-shrink sleeving is used mostly for permanent installations. It can provide additional insulation and resistance to abrasion, and it also boasts a protective moisture sealant. Once wrapped around a cable installation, the sleeving is subjected to a heat gun in order to reduce the diameter of the tubing to provide a secure and sturdy fitting. Braided sleeving is an expanding braided cable cover, and its usage is harnessing cables.

Post-manufacture cable protection Any standard internal cable can be oversheathed or over-armoured to make it suitable for external or direct burial environments. This does, however, make the cable thicker in diameter, and with the addition of either a polypropylene compound or SWA armouring, a lot less flexible. This is not a particularly cheap option; however, should the cable not be readily available off-the-shelf, this will cut lead times in half. Many manufacturers’ minimum order quantities are anywhere between 5km and 10km, and therefore if you only require 100m then savings can be gained, and wastage is kept to a minimum.
