Smart home happenings and automation announcements StormAudio In Management Buyout

The sale will not affect existing StormAudio infrastructure

StormAudio, immersive hardware brand owned by Auro Technologies, has been purchased by Immersive Audio Technologies Group. Yves Trélohan has organised the management buyout with the support of Saffelberg Investments. Yves has served as Auro Technologies’ Home Entertainment and Luxury Audio Product Division (StormAudio) senior vice president since the company first acquired the brand from Digital Media Solutions in 2015, a company he was chief executive officer of at the time. Yves has been steering the StormAudio product development and global sales for more than five years and orchestrated the acquisition of StormAudio/HELAP along with Brussels-based Saffelberg Investments as partner, via a new dedicated company Immersive Audio Technologies Group, of which he is MD, shareholder and board member. Immersive Audio Technologies will use its Nantes, France facility as global headquarters for sales, marketing, R&D and manufacturing, along with StormAudio’s existing Novato, California North American sales, marketing and dealer support subsidiary and Hong-Kong sales and service support center. Yves said, “The response from the channel is that we’ve demonstrated technological superiority with the StormAudio product line. This has required both continuous hard work and expenditures on the product development side. The strong financial support provided by Saffelberg Investments will hugely benefit our StormAudio brand expansion as we set our sights on taking the brand to the #1 position in the luxury immersive audio hardware category. “Whilst we maintain a great relationship with Auro, we are also excited about working more closely on technical and marketing initiatives with Dolby and DTS. For our dealers and distributors, we are committed to full sales, technical, and product development support, including full presence at CES, ISE and CEDIA Expos and many regional tradeshows around the world.” All existing StormAudio infrastructure, personnel, phone numbers, website, warehousing, remain in place. “In 2014 we made history with the Auriga, the first-ever true 3D audio receiver, built for us by StormAudio,” said Auro Technologies chairman of the board Wilfried Van Baelen. “Then in 2015 we acquired the brand and started the Home Entertainment and Luxury Audio Product Division (HELAP). “Today, StormAudio has a fresh, innovative line that has been wellaccepted in the channel. Its reliability, stability, unique feature sets and performance make it a resounding success.” Wilfried added, “Concurrently these past several years, Auro Technologies has made great progress developing new Auro-3D licensing clients. During this time the immersive audio hardware category has significantly progressed, and some of our licensees are marketing immersive audio sound processors that could compete with StormAudio, therefore potentially limiting the success of both the Auro and StormAudio brands.” “Auro Technologies determined the best solution is for the StormAudio HELAP Hardware Division to now stand on its own, granting it the freedom to further capitalise on what it has accomplished. The move frees Auro Technologies to now focus on our long-term vision of becoming a leading powerhouse in innovation and software for connected Immersive and Interactive audio entertainment. We are confident that this mutual decision will be positive for the growth and credibility of both companies,” concluded Wilfried. StormAudio +33 251 81 96 91, stormaudio.com

Children’s Hospice receives cinema room Together for Cinema organises free home cinema installations for children’s hospitals

In November 2016, Adrian Ickeringill and the WyreStorm team jumped on the opportunity to donate time and skills to provide Charlton Farm children’s hospice in Bristol with a brand new £18,000 home cinema. Charlton Farm, located in Wraxall, just to the west of Bristol, provides emergency, hospice, palliative and end of life care for children with life-limiting conditions, and their whole family. Ian Morrish, founder of Together For Cinema, had been in contact with Charlton Farm since April 2012, but for a number of reasons, the project didn’t get underway until December 2016, when a plan was put in place, and the go-ahead was given to convert the games room into a cinema and home entertainment multi-functional room. It was at this point that Ian sought to find an integrator to take on the project. “Having supplied Together for Cinema with extenders for the last couple of years, we as a team, wanted to help further,” explained Dave Schorah from WyreStorm. “When the Charlton Farm Cinema came up, local to our offices, it was a great opportunity for the WyreStorm team to get involved.” When sourcing products, manufacturers’ generosity shone, with the likes of Monitor Audio, Middle Atlantics, Arcam, Epson, Dataflow, QMotion, and of course, WyreStorm all donating the required products. NAD, iRoom and Enado also stepped up and donated several systems. The install began in April 2017, with the first visit involved cabling and installing the surround sound speakers, drop down screen, which was supplied via Premier Group, and an iRoom iPad docking station. The next phase involved the rack, AV receiver, and projector. The last pieces to the puzzle included the control system and automated blinds. “Now the system is in place and being used by staff and family staying at Charlton Farm, it is wonderful to see the impact it is having” said Dave. “It was a great honour to be involved in such a brilliant charity as “Together For Cinema” and we would highly recommend installers to volunteer with local Hospice’s as it makes such a difference!” Together For Cinema is currently looking for manufacturers anddistributors to donate a range of products, including media servers, Blu-ray players, iPads, Freeview boxes, and flat screens (50”+). If you would like to be involved, please contact Ian Morrish at ian@ad-con.demon.co.uk. Together for Cinema, togetherforcinema.com

AV Junction launches freelance platform to connect AV companies AV Junction streamlines the hiring of independent contractors for AV businesses

AV Junction has launched the first global web platform for the audio visual industry. According to company founder & CEO Paul Weatherhead, AV Junction streamlines the hiring and management of independent contractors for AV businesses while simultaneously helping industry freelancers to find new employment opportunities. Registration for the portal is now open. “AV Junction is a fully integrated, multi-featured web platform that enables AV companies to search for, hire, and manage qualified freelancers on a project-to-project basis, as needed, from anywhere in the world,” Paul explained. “AV companies can post an unlimited number of jobs, search a vast worldwide database of independents, create work order contracts for hiring, message freelancers directly, and make secure payments. Meanwhile, industry freelancers can join the database free of charge to easily search for and apply to relevant jobs based on skill, sector and job type.” AV Junction is a solution built to address all the issues that currently plague AV operations directors, project managers, and resource coordinators that are tasked to hire and manage AV freelancers for multiple projects. “I realised that there was no standard industry solution for finding and hiring AV freelancers. It was either through an ad-hoc process or via a ‘middle man’ recruiting agency,” he emphasised. “Likewise, there is no AV-specific job platform for freelancers to refer to when looking for work. I knew that there could be a better way to connect hiring companies and independent freelancers all over the world, and importantly, give both parties autonomy to find jobs and hire talent when they want, independent of an agency or coordinator – that’s how AV Junction was born.” AV Junction is available to commercial and residential systems integrators, rental, live event and staging professionals, exhibit and production houses, and audiovisual manufacturers globally, wherever Stripe is accepted. Interested customers can sign up for a free three-month trial to begin. “For the very first time, freelancers can minimise the risk of experiencing delayed or missing payments on a secure portal,” Pul concluded. “And, for the first time ever, AV companies have access to a portal of freelance professionals that they can review and work with. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.” AV Junction +1 844 602 2000, avjunction.com

CUSTOM AV WITH THE H2X FACTOR WyreStorm’s flagship H2X Series HDBaseT 5Play 4K HDR with integrated audio DSP matrix switchers, get the modular treatment with new H2XC models offering a choice of 10x10 and 16x16 chassis and up to six transmission cards to put the ‘custom’ in to Custom Install like never before. WyreStorm’s product manager Dave Schorah explains why tailored AV distribution suits you, sir. The H2X Series HDBaseT matrix switchers were developed specifically for large, high-end residential and commercial applications requiring multi-source, multi-zone video distribution of the latest 4K HDR content as well as multisource audio matrix switching to multiple zones. But that’s just the beginning.

An integrated audio matrix with powerful DSP enables the H2X to route up to 30 (MX-1010-HDBT-H2X) or 48 (MX-1616-HDBTH2X) separate audio signals, including ARC, HDMI de-embed from video and separate line-level audio only sources - ideal for digital audio streaming on Sonos, Apple Airplay and DLNA devices.

MX-1616-HDBT-H2XC

HDCP 2.2 compliant and boasting an HDBaseT 5Play feature set including video, multichannel audio up to DTS:X and Dolby Atmos, RS-232 and bidirectional IR control, power and Ethernet passthrough, the H2X features our QuickSync instant switching technology and SmartEDID to overcome display conflicts within mixed 2K/4K installs by dynamically reacting to changes in source routing to output the highest source resolution compatible with all displays.

However, with the addition of the H2XC model variant, the H2X now becomes a modular monster with a choice of chassis and fully customisable selection of multi-format transmission cards offering the ability to totally tailor an AV distribution to the specific application like never before.

The H2X is now the only multi-I/O audio visual matrix device available capable of delivering full bandwidth 18Gbps HDMI content over both copper and optical transmission mediums whilst handling up to 48 discrete audio source devices to up to 16 DSP-managed audio zones. 14 | December 2017 Essential Install DPS Wyrestorm.indd 14 December 17.indd All Pages

The fibre revolution has begun!

Similarly, given the frequency of residential installs requiring more audio zones than video for communal areas, such as gardens and fitness rooms, the ADZ module enables just that. By removing the expense of an HDBaseT transmission port, but retaining the ability to handle HDMI in and out, this card offers the full complement of audio features to make use of the internal audio matrix supporting up to 48 audio inputs and dual analogue and S/PDIF output with DSP to feed into an audio system, with the exception of the zone ARC input.

As bandwidths for residential source content break through the safe 10Gbps HDBaseT limit, this VLC module offers a variable compression solution to handle all HDMI signals up to 18Gbps 2160p 4:4:4 60Hz or 4K HDR transmissions. By dynamically reacting to content with light signal compression only when needed, transmissions remain latency-free with no distinguishable loss in quality. UHD Blu-ray, media servers and games consoles already offer 12-bit colour, HDR and 60Hz to push data rates beyond 14Gbps. Be ready with a solution that can send all this and more over an HDBaseT transmission.

With optical transmission modules and cable now cheaper than ever, there has never been a better time to embrace the future of data transmission and go further with fibre. The OM3 module combines our zero-latency, Visually Lossless Compression technology with a 10Gbps fibre module to deliver 18Gbps HDMI content and control up to 300m/984ft. Everything that 4K HDR consumer source devices have to offer can now be sent over huge distances via lossless optical transmission, immune to electrical and radio interference.

Our default transmission card for fixed I/O H2X matrix models, this module offers both a 18Gbps HDMI input and output with a Class A HDBaseT output to perfectly send 10-bit HDR content from a UHD Blu-ray or media server up to 70m/230ft or full 1080p @60Hz to 100m/328ft over a single Cat6 cable. Feature-rich audio connectivity is also included, with support for a separate audio source input via S/PDIF and the ability to receive a multi-channel ARC signal from a SmartTV. Audio outputs are offered as S/PDIF and analogue stereo phoenix to allow connection to a multi-room audio system or AVR.

TX-H2X-ADZ

It’s not always possible to centralise all source devices within the home. Games consoles and Blu-ray players often need to be locally accessible in-room rather than tucked away in a central rack. This HDBaseT input module allows remote source connection that is also part of the wider multi-zone distribution. With a Class A HDBaseT input replacing the HDMI port, this card is otherwise identical to the default TX-H2X-HDMI, including Class A HDBT output and full audio functionality. Using a compatible PoH transmitter, Ethernet and control signals can also be sent from the matrix to ensure sources remain part of the matrix infrastructure.

TX-H2X-VLC

We believe in offering true modularity with our matrix products that allow true AV customisation based on the needs of the application and in reality, the number of audio and video zones don’t always have to match. Skew the number of video and audio zones to suit the project with video and audio expansion modules. The VDZ expansion card offers the same HDMI and HDBT features as the default TX-H2X-HDMI module but without the audio I/O ports for a cheaper way of managing video sources and outputs or for areas where audio is perhaps handled in the zone via an AVR or soundbar system.

TX-H2X-OM3

The H2X Series is available now with any combination of TX-H2X-HDMI or TX-H2X-HDBT cards. The fully modular H2XC model with remaining cards will ship Q1 2018. Contact Habitech or Invision for details.

The Full 4K Monty

Habitech’s Jay Brand introduces the most capable JVC projector range ever, and the screen tech to go with it. JVC’s new projector line-up combines enhanced e-shift5 tech with amazing HDR capability for an immersive 4K picture experience, especially from Projecta’s supersmooth HD Progressive surface Progressively smooth: woven fabric v fibreglass v HD Progressive screen surfaces

We know that as long as there’s a p in pixel, the hardware manufacturers will be cramming more of them into home displays. Resolution, after all, gives them an easy yardstick to wave at the public. But as integrators tasked with the job of optimising the projected image, we also know that contrast, as well as colour accuracy and a wide colour gamut are as important to picture quality as the pixel count. That’s why I’m really excited about the new JVC line-up, because complementing enhanced e-shift5 processing, the three new models (DLA-X9900BE, DLA-X7900BE/WE, DLAX5900BE/WE) display real proficiency in these areas.

High-quality video with Low Latency Mode

An improved Low Latency Mode ensures faster response for games, and the processing without compression of the full 4K 10bit or 12bit colour depth for stunning performance regardless of source.

New 4K e-shift5 technology for improved definition

The new e-shift5 technology applies newly designed algorithms to realise a dramatic boost in diagonal detection precision, thus achieving even higher definition and improved picture quality.

Improved compatibility with high-resolution HDR content

In addition to the HDR Auto Picture mode, the new line offers manual picture tone and bright/dark level gamma adjustment to fine-tune the viewing experience. An expanded colour profile (DCI) and a 20% boost in the brightness of the flagship DLA-X9900BE and DLAX7900BE/WE models, in tandem with an active ‘Intelligent Lens Aperture’, gives you all the tools to deliver the punchiest most dynamic HDR images.

A true reflection of 4K quality

‘Surface deformations on many screens will cause pixel loss and ‘noise’ in the image from pixels reflecting in directions other than ideal. The proprietary new vinyl surface of Projecta’s HD Progressive screen is consistently more even, presenting each incoming 4K pixel with its own mirror flat launchpad, so that it reflects back at you undistorted. Multiply the result by just over eight million and you’ll see the immersive 4K picture complete and unblemished. JVC and Projecta are just two of the team players in a fully connected end-to-end 4K infrastructure brought together by Habitech to generate the eye-popping panoramic exclusives.

Weaponise your client security Habitech’s Stewart Day explores new ways to reduce risk and add value from Dahua Technology. Dahua Tech is on a mission to make your customer’s security more robust and easier to install. For practically every application you can imagine, Dahua has the hardware, bristling with class-leading functionality. For instance, if you’re after big pixel resolutions, you can count on UHD 4K capability across all platforms, and deploy sophisticated IVS analytics from virtually every camera, as well as ultra-low light Starlight operation and Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) technology - all supported by PoE convenience, proprietary NVRs, and a great control app. Through Dahua, the most vigilant security inside and outside is easily networked, applied and demonstrated. And the best thing is while you’re protecting your client, you’re also boosting your bottom line, because Dahua’s extraordinary range is available at ultra-competitive price points.

Entry-level eyeball

Superb versatility, performance and value from the awesome little HDW4431MP

Double trouble for intruders from the dual optical/ thermal DH-TPCBF2120 hybrid

You won’t believe what the super discreet new DH-IPCHDW4431MP, a 4MP IR Eyeball network camera can do for under £100 trade. Equipped with IP67 weather and IK10 anti-violence protection, this tough little sentinel is bristling with Intelligent Video System (IVS) analytics and up to 4MP (2688×1520) imaging capability with WDR contrast optimisation to snare any intruder day or night (IR LED range 30m). What’s more the latest H265 video compression gives you both recording quality and economy.

Heat seeker

Total darkness provides little cover when Dahua’s new DH-TPC-BF2120 Thermal Network Mini Hybrid Bullet Camera is on duty. It’s a smart thermal/IR hybrid device equipped with amazing day/night capabilities, including heat sensors for penetrating complete blackout conditions. IP67-rated and delivering an impressive armoury of counter-measures, including IVS analytics, inside and outside, this compact hybrid will not only detect heat from vehicles and intruders at greater distances, its inherently accurate fire detection functionality dramatically boosts the level of building protection as well. Best news of all: this Dahua is a sub £1K design in a market of £3-4K cameras.

Armed and ready: Dahua’s ITC237-PU1AIRHL, ANPR camera

APNR all-in-one

It’s a mouthful to pronounce but the challenge of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (APNR) is made a little easier when the LPR algorithms and white list databases are integrated with the camera (rather than in a computer). Two new Dahua designs are so equipped. Each is IP66 and armed with ultra-low light Starlight and WDR tech, delivering true day/night operation. With an 8m range, the smaller ITC237-PW1A-IRZ (£399 Trade) is perfect for barriers/gates when the cars need to stop. Its bigger cousin, the ITC237-PU1A-IRHL (£499 Trade) has the ability to detect and recognise a moving vehicle’s plate number at speeds up to 40kmh from up to 40m away.

The longest reach

And finally for the surveillance of large spaces requiring cameras in far flung positions, Dahua has just introduced its proprietary ‘extended Power over Ethernet’ (ePoE) system of cameras, network switches and network recorders, delivering IP video, audio, control and power over CAT between the camera and network switch (or NVR with embedded switch) at an astonishing 800m range. Genius.

Tackling security breaches

It is the integrator’s responsibility to inform their clients of potential security breaches, but what is the best way to approach this? Bruno Napoli, co-founder of Krika Concierge, delves deeper into this topic. We are at the stage where we can’t ignore the fact that connected devices could be hacked and turned into an entry point to completely control a house. Some fail to realise the purpose of a residential network has dramatically evolved over the years. What was once a single PC, connected via Ethernet to a modem, has essentially become the backbone of a home, and has the responsibility to connect us with virtually everything in the house. Connected objects are not just gadgets for our entertainment anymore. People now rely on them to turn on and off lights, water the garden, open and close doors, check if the kids are safe at home, connect with friends and family, used for health services - the list goes on and on. Therefore, the consequences of an intrusion in such a connected home can be devastating. So, how does an integrator warn a client without discouraging or scaring them off technology? This conversation can’t be ignored. If it is, how are we any different to a car dealer not warning the buyer of the need to change the brakes after a certain mileage? In my opinion, this conversation should be had at the beginning of a project. It doesn’t need to be done in a negative manner. Instead, turn the conversation to focus more about providing the client with a full service. Explain that every device requires regular

updates, upgrades and regular maintenance, and that this is a service that you can provide. This not only turns a negative conversation into a more positive one, but it provides a better outcome for both the client and the dealer. The client is confident that they will have a working system that is regularly maintained, and the integrator benefits from an ongoing contract. Krika Concierge, 0203 884 2274, krika.io

Picture Perfect

Barco Residential has been a leading light in creating high-quality cinematic experiences in a way that marries architecture and design in the world’s finest residences and yachts. Of course this means ultimate image performance, but it’s about more than creating the best possible projectors and putting them in someone’s home. This is all about creating an experience that suits the tastes and lifestyle of the client, as also reflected in the design and architecture of their home. Too often, audio visual technologies become a necessary evil to architects and designers that don’t really fit with their design objectives. Barco Residential wants to change that, creating technologies that, rather than intimidate, become a design material that empowers the designer and architect to include these experiences into their projects.

Saving space

Especially in places where you wouldn’t expect a true cinematic experience to be possible, there is an incredible opportunity for the custom integration channel to bring that level of experience to their customers and their design partners that they didn’t think possible, without building a more traditional

dedicated home cinema. When you think about luxury high end apartment or condo developments in places like London or New York, this becomes an interesting proposition, as no matter how high end they are, space is still at a premium. These homes feature high end design (often by famous architects and designers) as well as very hig end furnishings and appliances. Yet when you want to enjoy your favourite film, TV series or even video game for example, you end up with a flat panel that in the best case is then ‘cleverly’ concealed into a piece of furniture, maybe with a strip of matching marble across the top to integrate with the decor. Even a 98in 4K flat panel however doesn’t give you a cinematic experience (and leaves you with a monolithic black square to hide), but then the design community has come to assume that a cinematic experience is simply not possible in these environments, without making unacceptable design and esthetic compromises, maintaining the elegance and sophistication of the chosen designs.

Changing perspectives

This is where Tim Sinnaeve and the Barco Residential team have set themselves the lofty goal of changing all that, creating technologies that make cinematic experiences possible, even where space is at a premium and maintaining the integrity of the architectural design is of primordial importance, as it should be. Testament to that, Barco Residential recently introduced the new Medea projector, which not only brings a new level of performance to its segment, but lives these values particularly well. Primary requirement of course is enabling that big screen cinematic experience, which Medea delivers with its high image quality, featuring 4K UHD resolution with HDR10 support at class leading brightness levels with a high level of detail, accurate colours, razor sharp images and low latency thanks to its Single Step Processing. The image quality is powered by a new optical engine and laser light source, providing significantly improved image uniformity, nearly instant on/off and a light source life of up to 40 hours for maximum performance and convenience.

Quality reputation Barco Residential recently introduced the new Medea projector

Of course, impressive image quality has been the hallmark of Barco Residential’s products, and delivering that unmatched cinematic experience is what the industry has come to expect of Barco Residential. Where it becomes interesting is how the company has designed Medea to bring this experience to those homes where

space is at a premium while maintaining the integrity of the architectural design. Hide everything but the picture was the driving central idea behind Medea’s design. The projector features a liquid cooling system, allowing the projector to operate in any orientation. This combined with a choice of 10 all-glass lens options, wide lens shift and the unique built-in warp engine provides wideranging flexibility in terms of projector positioning and architectural integration in customers’ homes.

Terrific tech

The powerful warp engine in particular, which borrows technology developed in Barco’s Simulation labs, is unique in the residential space. It offers even more freedom in projector positioning by allowing the integrator to use advanced Image Geometry Correction (IGC) to deliver an image with perfect geometry on the screen, even when the projector is outside of the offset range of adjustment. From a design and architectural perspective this gives bags of freedom in projector positioning, making it possible to truly hide everything but the picture, and enabling that cinematic experience even in the most challenging of design environments. Barco Residential has created options that allow Medea to effectively become an in-wall or an in-ceiling projector. In creating this cinematic experience in these high-end design environments, as important as what you can hear is what you don’t hear. From the onset, the maker focused on developing solutions to keep Medea as silent as possible, including design workshops with different cooling suppliers to create the best cooling systems. Ultimately, by using the size of the projector optimally, Barco Residential really pushed the limit on image quality while having a silent projector at unprecedented light output levels. It’s innovations like these that landed Medea a CE Pro Best Award at CEDIA 2017 in San Diego. Most people would never imagine a true cinematic experience to be possible in these types of living spaces, which then simply vanishes bringing you back to the integrity of your home’s unique design. This has the potential to transform the living experience in any space. Perhaps life really is best lived at home.

Kaleidescape Experience Centre Pulse will appoint dealers with the accolade of ‘Kaleidescape Experience Centre’

Mark Pitts

Stephen Carr

Pulse Cinemas has always chosen to represent audio visual brands that offer high performance and excellent value for money, many of which are consistently included in the specifications of the year’s most highly regarded home cinema projects. No truer could this be for the Kaleidescape brand which, for 14 years, has stood proudly at the bleeding edge of content licensing, storage and playback, blazing a trail that has ultimately led to the company having an enormous collection of legally downloadable film content, and a lineup of products that protect and deliver content in a way that is hard to match. Stephen Carr, the brand ambassador for Kaleidescape and Pulse Cinemas in the UK, is looking forward to 2018 as he believes that there is huge growth potential in both the marine and residential market, especially if marketing can tap into the mind of the end-user and introduce Kaleidescape to more people. Stephen says, “All ‘luxury’ products are considered so, because they are desired by all, but only purchased by the few. Our marketing plan is designed to introduce Kaleidescape to as many people as we can with an interest in cinema so that the few that have the ability to take action, go out and do so.” “Generating the interest is just the first step,” Stephen continues. “Once we have the interest, it then becomes imperative to make sure that the customers experience of Kaleidescape is beyond anything that they have ever had before.” Aside from the uncompromising quality that Kaleidescape provides, much of the value in owning one of the systems is found only through experiencing it firsthand, which is why Pulse is looking to appoint a limited number of dealers with the accolade of ‘Kaleidescape Experience Centre’. To qualify, dealers of Kaleidescape will need to be offering an immersive experience that allows the customer to come to their own conclusion about what they will choose as the source for their home cinema. Dealers will be able to show the clear differences between Kaleidescape and alternative products, such as

streaming, and be able to educate the customer about the major differences. Most importantly, the dealer will need to have a demo facility that delivers content in the finest ways available including, but not limited to, 4K / HDR resolution and 3D immersive surround sound. Marketing for the end-user will be centred around the ‘experience’ and dealers with the title will obviously have the best opportunity of generating new Kaleidescape business as a result. Applications are being taken now for dealers wishing to apply to become a Kaleidescape Experience Centre or KEC. Pulse’s Mark Pitts comments, “I am looking forward to customers becoming more aware of who Kaleidescape are and what they offer through what will be a great marketing push. By having KEC’s setup where we can show end users the difference between the quality Kaleidescape offer and the picture and sound quality streaming offers will only emphasise just how much people have been missing”. uControl update edges app closer to physical remote convenience and speed

New Widget and Force Touch quick actions deliver instant scene selections directly from the iPhone Lock screen.

The app updates coincide with the recent announcement that the entire MHUB range can now be controlled using an app or voice at no additional cost.

HDANYWHERE has released the first significant update to its universal remote app - uControl for iOS. The updates focus on convenience and speed-of-use improvements, with the addition of sequence-triggering 3D/Force Touch quick actions and a nifty uControl Lock screen widget. Both new features mean users can have their remote control ready at the flick of a finger, and quickly jump directly to the function required. Other changes include design tweaks, such as support for iPhone X and a slicker UI facelift. The app updates coincide with the announcement that the entire MHUB range has recently been updated to include an integrated control processor. It enables app or voice control of MHUB-connected source devices and displays at no additional cost. uControl app users can turn on the TV and adjust the volume, select sources and control them, play and pause, navigate programme guides and menus, and turn everything off in the room when leaving - all via the free uControl app. “I love seeing how uControl takes people by surprise. They generally expect something naff, but are always pleasantly surprised by the quality and the ease. If you don’t believe me, then download the app and try it in demo-mode. It is a decent alternative to using costly third party control solutions or unintelligent learning remotes. uControl requires no programming skill, no additional spend and is configured in minutes,” explains Chris Pinder, founder of HDANYWHERE. MHUB at every price point is a complete whole-home AV system with universal control as standard. There is no need for any additional controller hardware. Starting at £1000 RRP, the maker says the new MHUB is unmatched in terms of features vs cost. uControl can be downloaded from App Store now.

Full list of iOS updates • 3D/Force Touch quick action triggered sequences (macros) • Alexa triggered sequences (macros) • Better Sequences support (eg. the creation of macros to appear as user-determinable left-swipe buttons or via 3D/Force Touch quick action presses • Lock screen widget for faster user experience • Demo mode added for a try-before-you-buy experience • Optimised GUI for iPhone X • Support for centralised/rack-located AVRs • Facelifted graphical user interface (GUI) with • Additional user customisations including zone background images, dark and light colour themes, button borders and button press vibration on/off • Easy removal or reordering of zones and sequences in the menu • Auto-detection of the latest generation MHUB models • Updated with new HDANYWHERE identity typography throughout

Home Screen uControl Quick Actions

Home screen quick actions are a convenient way to trigger sequences (macros) right from the Home screen, using 3D Touch. Apply a little pressure to the uControl app icon with your finger, more than you use for tap and hold, to see a list of available sequence quick actions. Tap one to trigger it. The uControl widget is also displayed above the list of quick actions when in active use.

Adding the uControl widget

The uControl widget displays the most commonly used buttons for the device currently being viewed. To add the uControl widget, scroll to the bottom of the widgets screen and tap ‘Edit’. This will pull up a list of apps that offer widgets. Add uControl by scrolling to the bottom of the Edit screen, where it says ‘More Widgets’. Then, tap the green ‘+’ button uControl in the list. To rearrange the order they show up in, look to the right of a widget name and tap and hold the hamburger menu (three little horizontal lines). This lets you drag the widget up and down. The company recommends moving uControl to the top of the list for easy access. HDANYWHERE, hdanywhere.co.uk/control

All hail Wonder-Women!

The mission of Women in AV is, and has always been, to educate, support and inspire women through collaboration, by sharing ideas, knowledge and experiences and by mentoring and nurturing professional growth. The group introduces itself to EI.

Abi Brown, MD of Openingz.com, runs WAVE UK

A recent WAVE meet up at the Lutron European Experience Centre in London

The UK group is predominantly run by Abi Brown, MD of Openingz.com, an organisation that recruits for posts both in and out of the AV industry. Abi is supported by Pat Deeley, who is instrumental in holding our North events plus the all important annual meet up held at ISE in Amsterdam. EI’s editor caught up with Abi to see what it’s all about. “2017 has certainly been a very exciting year for the group, with our meetings attracting a higher number of attendees and the feedback consistently positive. We are seeing a great mix of individuals coming together – ranging from managing directors, sales directors, event, marketing or PR executives, technical AV engineers, finance, project, operations and service delivery managers, and business developers. 2017 really kicked off with our summer event held at 1 Wimpole Street. This was our biggest to date and was supported by generous sponsorship from Blackmagic Design. Over 50 women registered to enjoy a tour of the facility, expertly provided by Kevin McLoughlin, a long-time supporter of our group, plus an engaging presentation about embracing our personal presence, given by Sylvia Baldock. During this event we chose to run a poll inviting feedback from our attendees on a number of things. We wanted to find out why women attended, what they got out of it and their thoughts on frequency and so forth. It was evident that our members found the group to be beneficial to their development and business, plus they had a strong preference for attending events as a stand alone, rather than combined with other industry events (i.e. held at a showcase or partner day) – people want to fully focus on the event and content, and not be distracted by other demands that might come up. The sponsors this year have been exceptional, creating high quality events at incredible venues with wonderful hospitality. A highlight for us is always a visit to 1 Wimpole St, and following the success of the summer event, our next destination was the new Lutron European Experience

Centre in London in October. With the support of our member Martine Dodwell-Bennet, plus the Experience Centre manager Matt Jacks, the evening was well attended and very interactive. Along with the chance to take a quick-fire tour of the centre itself, Martine had also organised a presentation by two senior interior designers from Aukett Swanke who gave us great tips on designing our own space at home – fielding quite a few questions from our audience. One lucky attendee even won the amazing Dyson SuperSonic hairdryer. It’s always wonderful when a sponsor approaches us and asks to put on an event, so in early November several women took the opportunity to visit the Sharp showroom in Cavendish Square, London. We appreciate the support from Angela Townsend (a recent award winner – Sales Brilliance no less!) who made this happen. At this event we heard an engaging presentation from Birgit Jackson, their commercial director. She discussed her work history and the value of a good work/life balance. Once again this generated some great conversations in the room. Our final event of the year with a festive feel will have us returning to another favourite spot, the showroom at Colebrook Bosson Saunders in London. Sponsored by Bubble Communications we have a full evening planned. It’s really encouraging to see the numbers consistently increase. Though we hold less frequent events than we used to, we truly believe the value and content have reached a higher standard and this is what attracts people to us – we have returning faces but always welcome new faces too. What can you expect when attending one of our events? A warm welcome and introductions to others; any questions you may have surrounding the AV industry are sure to be answered due to the wealth of experience in the room! The friendships and relationships that are being developed are strong and we work hard to put people together and encourage and celebrate all the successes within the industry. This is so important to us and through next year we want to share more content that demonstrates what an amazing contribution these women are making. Alongside our events we are also busy complementing our member activities online in our social remit – our Twitter group now boasts over 9,500 followers and the engagement on here is lively. Plus our LinkedIn and Facebook groups are continuing to grow. Follow us on Twitter @WomeninAV @OpeningzByAbi and find us on Facebook and LinkedIn. To get involved with 2018 events please contact Abi Brown, we’re excited at the prospects for next year and beyond… and who we will meet!” WAVE 07720 097 478, AbigailB@openingz.com

Take It To The IMAX

In partnership with its online cousin Ce Pro Europe, EI shares an exclusive inside look at the UK’s very first IMAX home cinema, courtesy of London based integration company Cornflake. This luxurious 15 seat theatre has three tiers of seating and a 5.5m wide floor to ceiling curved IMAX screen. The reclining seats are equipped with professional 3D glasses, while a Dual 4K (2D/3D) projector is teamed with IMAX’s proprietary sound system to deliver the images and sound. The cinema is also sound-proofed to mitigate noise being heard elsewhere within the property. Built below ground, the room in total cost a cool one million pounds. Building the three tiers the client wanted was no mean feat as the basement floor had to be lowered by one metre to create the space needed.

Stretched fabric walling, dyed to match the client’s blue interior design scheme, and an acoustically-transparent screen conceal the speakers and subwoofers. David Hanson, general manager EMEA for IMAX Home Entertainment, explains, “We offer three cinema design templates for home use – Platinum, Palais and Prestige. This exemplary project is based on the Theatre Palais option and brings the same philosophy used in the world’s leading IMAX theatres to small and mediumsized private home theatres, where between five to 20 seats are required.”

To create an IMAX cinema, space of 80-150sqm (480-760sqft) and a ceiling height between 2.4m-3.8m is needed

The house benefits from an impressive array of services including a sophisticated security set-up; HVAC, lighting and amazing projected artworks throughout. We were delighted to be commissioned to also manage the IMAX installation and other AV functions across the stunning property.” Robin adds, “The client wanted ‘The best viewing experience’ in a dedicated cinema to go alongside his dedicated ‘listening’ room. As Cornflake is brandagnostic, and offers a highly bespoke service, we were able to propose several alternatives for a state-of-the-art home theatre. “We have been designing and installing home cinemas for over 15 years now so we’re fortunate to have many installations where we can take prospective clients to view different systems, plus of course we have a reference grade home theatre in our London showroom that the client was able to road test kit for several

hours. However, as this is the first residential IMAX install in Europe, the client had to visit Shanghai to review a similar set up installed in a hotel there. The research side of this job is great!” So from a technical point of view this must have been a challenge, right? John Fitzpatrick, technical manager for Cornflake, explains, “The biggest challenge, especially in central London where prime real estate commands a premium price per square foot, is space. In order to create an IMAX certified room you need a dedicated area of at least 480sqft with a minimum ceiling height of 2.4m – which is larger than the average living room – to accommodate the screen and tiered seating to the required proportions; so it’s a serious decision to dedicate all that space to such a specialist room.” John adds, “The quality of the fit-out can also be a sensitive area. UHNW clients frequently demand top-level finishing and their exquisite interior design schemes are often on a par with international boutique hotels. In this instance the client’s expectations for the room design were significantly higher than IMAX’s recommended specifications, so we were in the sensitive position of helping to guide the IMAX team and deliver a project which ticked everyone’s boxes. “IMAX delivers exemplary cinematic equipment, but we had to ensure the space would exceed the client’s brief in all areas, not just system performance. To this end we worked closely with the appointed interior designer to develop the aesthetics and styling of the room. The combination of top technology with ultra-stylish design has created a room that is out of this world.” Sources are of course important, John reveals, “For this particular project it was a client-driven decision to include several source components to ensure flexibility and maximum choice, these included IMAX’s Movie Server, a Kaleidescape Movie Server and an Apple TV. Cornflake also advised that due provision was made for further sources to be added with ease at any point in the future, such as games consoles, Sky or similar subscription based TV services.”

Self-calibration

The system features some interesting functions such as self-calibration

Everything about this cinema screams luxury

Part of the set up is that the cinema carries out its own self calibration each day, so how does this work? John says, “This is IMAX’s own unique technology. In brief, cameras mounted to the lens assembly within the projector constantly interpret the picture on screen and adjust the image accordingly to deliver consistent quality. It’s visionary technology especially combined with IMAX’s 24/7 remote system performance monitoring.” So now its all fired up and working, what is the team’s stand-out feature, when compared to a standard cinema? Mark Withers, senior home cinema consultant for Cornflake, enthuses, “Unlike many home cinemas, a home IMAX has quite a commercial feel to it. When you step into a private IMAX you literally leave the rest of the property behind and enter another world. The room feels weirdly detached from the rest of the home due to its unique set up and styling. It’s hugely immersive due to the sheer size of the space, the quality of the furnishings and fittings, and the hushed calm feel of the space as a whole. “The scale of the image on the giant screen is akin to the sensation of being in a modern multiplex cinema – with a far greater luxe factor than in the average high street chain. IMAX’s award-winning 3D technology is also class-leading and completely unlike anything most film buffs will have seen before. In this particular installation, the room affords the height of luxury and no expense was spared to make it by far the most captivating in the home. The owner and his family were completely blown away by the experience.” So with one under it’s belt, is Cornflake planning any more? Mark comments, “The IMAX brand is the epitome of luxury and a private IMAX is undoubtedly a covetable status mark. For home owners with the budget and space it is now a real viable option. We have several clients currently considering and comparing set-ups, and a second IMAX project that is nearing sign-up. Let’s be honest, like all new technology, there is a learning curve.

“Essentially we are taking a system designed for enormous amphitheatres and making it work to the same stunning capacity, but in a much smaller space, whilst at the same time integrating it with all of the other household requirements (e.g. lighting, movie servers, streamed content, etc). Hands up… this install presented challenges and was a steep learning curve for Cornflake, but nothing was insurmountable, and we worked closely with the IMAX team to deliver a first-class theatre. With this project under our belt we are looking forward to a strong ongoing partnership with IMAX and delivering many more exciting theatres.” Mark adds, “Cornflake is not IMAX’s exclusive partner, preferring to remain brand agnostic and true to our independent roots, but, in reality, there are probably very few UK companies that could manage the complexity of design and install to achieve the quality of performance demanded by both the client and IMAX. The experience we have gained from this first install has been invaluable and we will of course build on it for future projects. Watch this space for the next one – due to be signed up just in time for the festive film fest.” Cornflake 0207 323 4554, cornflake.co.uk

Essential Install | Sponsored Section: Genesis Technologies

Cinema Tools: Cinema design made easy Neil Davidson, MD of Genesis Technologies, introduces a new way to create the experience that end users will love. Since I entered the AV business back in 2005, I have been passionate about home cinema design and training based on solid engineering principles. Somewhere along the way, engineering principles morphed into standards based design but without any actual process to follow to ensure that the standards are correctly applied to deliver an experience. Critically, we need to understand that it is the overall experience that clients are actually buying when they invest in a home cinema. More than two years ago I started to evaluate how Genesis Technologies could position itself to serve dealers that recognise that the experience is what counts, and we have evolved our product line to meet this need and where the products we needed didn’t exist, I have started companies to deliver them! High performance acoustic treatment in 50mm of depth, masking screens that work on the content aspect not pre-sets and vertical mount brackets that let a large projector be hidden in a small space, are just a few of the examples that I have raised over these articles and there is yet more to come on the product side. What I recognised was the need for easy-to-access design tools and supporting training that focused on making it easy to understand and deliver the experience that the client wants to invest in. This has led to the development of the Cinema Tools suite of calculators and the Cinema Expert education and information program. Cinema Tools is a free and open website (www. cinema-tools.com) that is not restricted to any brand or technology and which you can use to ensure that you eliminate any errors that would damage the client experience, but also quickly examine the many options that exist to really improve the client experience. As an example, how would you best implement a constant height projection system given that every approach has trade-offs - Cinema Tools evaluates no less than seven different approaches based on a few simple pieces of data so that you can decide with the client which is best.

Cinema Tools offers the following design calculators which produce beautiful PDF reports that can be incorporated into your own documentation: • Projector Location Calculator for image size, lens shift and throw distance, • Projector Brightness Calculator for all combinations of aspect ratios and adjustment methods, • Projector Beam Size Calculator for port holes and mirror solutions, • Viewing Angles Calculator for up to four rows of seating including sightlines, • Speaker Layout Calculator dynamically creates layouts based on room size and chosen speaker count, • Required Amplifier / Max SPL Calculator for accurate amplifier calculations, • Room Mode Calculator for evaluation of room dimensions and seating locations. With this powerful and free toolkit at your disposal we believe that Cinema Tools makes cinema design easier and faster than ever before. Cinema Expert is where all the training materials linked to the application of Cinema Tools to your designs can be found. We are currently in the process of finalising our training schedule for 2018 so that we can bring this to as many people as possible. I really believe that the access to a free design toolkit along with a process based training approach will make it easier to design and sell cinemas that deliver the amazing client experience that we need to justify ourselves in the face of ever improving competition. Essential Install | Projectors & Screens

Pixel perfect AWE’s new home cinema boasts an Epson EHTW9300 projector

A dedicated home cinema is a luxury that deserves the best. A multimedia room devoted to showing the highest quality audio and visual content demands high quality kit, too. So what’s the latest and greatest in projector technology, the most spectacular in screens? EI discovers picture perfect projectors and sees which screens reign supreme. Pulse Cinemas has recently put themselves firmly back in the projector game by announcing the exclusive distribution for BenQ’s home cinema range of 4K projectors. According to the Pulse team, BenQ also has new 4K and HDR models coming early in 2018 with price points of the new models starting under £2,000. The much anticipated HDR will also be coming to three of the company’s premium models. Mike Beatty, Pulse’s managing director, discusses this latest addition to his brands, “At a similar time, we were proud to take the distribution in the UK of the very impressive Digital Projection. A UK company, based in Manchester, who have previously focused on delivering solutions for high end projects in the commercial world, are now taking the home cinema market by storm.”

Screen Excellence on show in the small cinema at Pulse’s marvellous HQ

When speaking to Charlie McClarron, UK sales manager for Pulse Cinemas, about their fastest moving Digital Projection model, the E-Vision 4K, retailing at just over £17,000, he was quick to state how “the product’s picture quality will massively outperform any projector from our competitors.”

Decadent demo

Dealers who have taken the drive to sunny Stansted in Essex to see for themselves, the reality of the bold statements coming out of Pulse, seem to be confirmed in the luscious showroom. Barry Copeland, Prestige Audio’s technical director, comments, “On a recent client visit to Pulse Cinemas, the guys were keen to demonstrate how their projector offering now outperformed any other projector. We were blown away by what we saw, and after a 30 minute sensory explosion, our client signed off on the Digital Projection Highlight 4K retailing at £42,000+VAT.” While showing the EI team around the recently updated facility, Kapes Patel and Mike Beatty expressed that, “we are confident we can now offer any dealer and installer looking to deliver their clients a projector solution, the opportunity to witness the superior picture quality being demonstrated at our numerous facilities. With our calibration expertise and experience in the world of projection, we are confident that we can deliver the very best visual performance at any price point, capable of exceeding even the most demanding of client expectations,” comments Mike.

Superb screens

Simon Schino, Pulse’s sales manager, remarks, “Our team is notorious for giving our dealers the support necessary. With so many screens available, we understand that our edge becomes apparent from the moment a dealer places an order. Our experienced team are in place to make sure our dealer’s clients are left delighted with the outcome, and we will do whatever is necessary to help.” Pulse’s chosen screen brand, Screen Research, is launching a new online configurator for 2018 which will allow dealers to build completely bespoke screens, at any size and any configuration, and allows the dealer to instantly gain pricing and drawings. 2018 is looking to be a very exciting time for Pulse Cinemas, with a brand new media room and London dealer/installer showroom close to completion. To assist with the media room’s focus on design, the company will be demonstrating the impressive Screen Research decor mask. The latest updates will be completed for visiting dealers, installers and their guests to experience in January.

Zooming in

The 4K501ST has 40,000 hours light source

Canon’s range of 4K projectors, available from RGB Communications, offer the smallest native 4K (4096 x 2400) panels with the smallest footprint in its class, weighing in at only 18kg. With such a compact size and low weight these are easy to install even in the most demanding of space saving environments. Canon’s range consists of multiple models with zoom ranges up to 1.6x from Genuine Canon optics, this combined with the brightness up to 6,000 lumens and a constant F2.6 aperture delivers consistent and impressive brightness throughout. The contrast ratio of these models can be set to adapt to content delivering accurate colours and black levels beyond that of standard projection. For the 4K experience, films are delivered with low level of motion blurring, delivering sharp and striking images from both computer and video sources. Hassle-free ownership is another key benefit for the 4K501ST and 4K600Z (Laser), the lamp and filter assembly are easy to replace without dismounting the projector. It’s energy efficient in comparison with projectors of comparable brightness at just 475w in Eco mode and just 0.4w in standby mode minimises the running costs. Laser models require very little maintenance and come with a five year warranty, and 40,000 hours light source.

Acoustically transparent

For residential applications, RGB recommend the AV Stumpfl range of projection screens, especially the DECOFRAME. RGB believes this to be a premium quality frame projection screen system. Available in standard or custom sizes, the screens can be supplied with rear or front projection surfaces, as well as the acoustically transparent option for those who need to place speakers directly behind the screen. With AV Stumpfl, engineering is used to provide a perfectly rectangular shape and accurate edges that prevent shadows from forming on the projected image. If, however, the client prefers a more discrete option for their cinema, the AV Stumpfl INLINE premium quality roll up projection screen fits the bill. The INLINE provides high functionality and attractive design, with a noiseless motor courtesy of a special rubber mounting solution.

Other features include QuickMount wall or ceiling mounting to help facilitate quick and easy installation. The recessed casing can be delivered and preinstalled whilst the building work and decorating is still being completed, and the main assembly can be installed once the environment is clean and ready for the screen.

Excellent expo

AWE offers installers access to Epson projectors and Draper projection screens, both of which were on display at the recent AWE Smart Home Expo. The visuals in AWE’s new home cinema are provided by an Epson EH-TW9300 projector, which boasts highquality image quality by supporting 4K content and intelligently enhancing 1080p. Epson’s 3LCD technology delivers bright and rich colours accurately, says the maker. With 4K enhancement, 3LCD technology, and HDR support, this projector provides an image versatile enough to cope with a wide range of content. The TW9300 produces 2,500 lumens of brightness, with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. The simple setup and motorised lens adjustment control ensure installation is smooth, allowing customers to enjoy their favourite films with no delay. AWE provides its customers with access to the EH-LS10500, part of the home cinema laser projector range. This model features 3LCD reflective panels, 4K enhancement, a laser light source and support for Ultra HD Blu-ray discs and other HDR sources. AWE says silky smooth images are assured thanks to a high aperture and high-speed motion response for crisp and detail-rich images during fast-motion sequences. To complement the projection options, AWE exclusively distributes fixed and tab tensioned electric Draper projector screens to the UK market. Draper ReAct is an ambient light-rejecting fabric that enhances colour and contrast in situations where a complete room blackout is either not possible, or not desired. The Clarion fixed screens are available as standard in a range of sizes, from 92in to 133in, ensuring the perfect screen for the environment. There are also adaptive tab-tensioned electric versions ranging from 86in to 104in, with virtually any other screen size available in both models to order. The new AWE home cinema boasts a 110in Draper Clarion fixed frame NanoPerf screen. The ClearSound Nanoperf surface is acoustically transparent, enabling speakers to be located directly behind, and the slim black frame provides tension to the fabric, assuring a perfectly smooth viewing surface.

Built for the finer 4K pixel size and count, Projecta’s proprietary HD Progressive screen is consistently smoother and more even at the pixel level, for the most precise and accurate reflection of pixel light. Surface deformations on traditional screen surfaces cause pixel loss and ‘noise’ from imperfect pixel reflections but Habitech is distributing these screens for their high quality.

Closing the gap

The Optoma UHZ65 has a laser light source

On the Clarion fixed frame version, a black Vel-Tex covered aluminium frame forms an attractive 3.8cm border around the screen. Without the need for snaps or tools, the fabric attaches to the frame to form a smooth viewing surface. The Vel-Tex finish eliminates reflections on the silver/grey screen which has the same 1.0 gain as a matt white screen.

Size matters

EI caught up with Joseph Burke, European & UK manager at Draper, to see if the mighty screen still reigns supreme. “Despite the continued growth of flat panel displays, we’re finding that projection screens are still relevant because they can deliver in ways that displays can’t,” says Joseph. “Screens provide great performance in large sizes—including sizes well beyond what is available in flat screens. With 4K projection, and the increased colour space and contrast of HDR, today’s premium projection screens can perform at the same high level, and provide that immersive experience that people are after.” The new JVC 4K projector range is now available from Habitech and Invision. There are three new models, DLA-X9900BE, DLA-X7900BE/WE and DLA-X5900BE/ WE, majoring on high contrast and HDR optimisation for the most immersive 4K pictures. According to the maker, JVC’s e-shift technology has evolved to meet the growing demand for 4K and its new e-shift5 technology uses new algorithms to achieve greater image refinement, definition and quality. In addition to the HDR Auto Picture feature, there’s comprehensive manual calibration of tone and gamma levels to optimise HDR, plus expanded colour space and brightness in the DLA-X9900BE and DLA-X7900BE/WE models. The new models also claim a faster response for gaming with a new Low Latency mode.

The new JVC 4K projector range is now available from Habitech

“The quality of projectors on the market today has narrowed the gap between commercial cinema and home theatre,” says Into AV’s Adam Rackhman. “Commercial cinema moved over to digital some time ago now, initially with 2K DLP projectors and now with 4K DLP. With precision glass optic long throw lenses and very high lumen output, these expensive projectors are mostly manufactured by Christie and Barco. Domestic models, with the cost saving advantage of shorter throw lenses and much lower brightness requirements, have gradually crept closer to the quality of their big commercial counterparts, while remaining reasonably affordable.” The new Optoma 4K projectors, available via Into AV, are a prime example of this, says the maker. The UHD65 recently won product of the year in What HiFi, receiving many positive reviews. As with its commercial counterparts, the projector uses a 2K DLP chip, so starts with twice the resolution of full HD. Each mirror on the DLP chip oscillates between two positions so that two separate pixels are projected for each single mirror, meaning that the full 8.3 million pixels land on the screen. Adam adds, “Another game changer is laser based light source technology that does away with the traditional lamp. Lamps are hugely inefficient, generating massive amounts of heat while slowly reducing in brightness over their lifetime. Laser based projectors run cool and instantly turn on and off, and the brightness remains consistent. And we’ve just released the Optoma UHZ65 with a laser light source.”

The bigger picture

“Resolution has increased, picture size has gone up,” continues Adam. “When we first started distributing projection screens, the average size model was 6ft with a 16:9 ratio, with some still sticking to 4:3. The latest home cinema projectors were 720p and not very bright.” As the industry progressed to 1080p, Blu-ray beat HDDVD in the format battle, and Full HD quickly became an essential feature. In relation to the distance from viewer to screen, larger screens were being fitted. “Now with the arrival of 4K, most of the screens we sell are 8ft and above, and mainly tab tensioned or fixed frame. If you look closely at a projected still image from a 4K projector it is incredible how small each pixel is,” concludes Adam. “This highlights how important the projection surface of the screen is. For this reason, Grandview screens use a material certified by the Imaging Science Foundation for 4K use.” These screens are available from Into AV. Italian electronics company SIM2 manufactures home cinema products, including high performance screen systems, distributed by Invision. The SIM2 CRYSTAL 4 UHD HDR projector achieves high picture quality through the partnership of the latest 4K UHD 0.67” DLP chipset from Texas Instruments and SIM2’s video processing technology, for a crisp and colourful viewing experience in UHD HDR format. It features a stylish Italian design, enriched by a luxurious crystal finish.

Productive partnerships Another offering from SIM2 is the NERO4 UHD projector, which also benefits from the Texas Instruments partnership, and can create a lucid and colourful viewing experience. A new high power 450W lamp enables NERO4 UHD to provide up to 5000 lumens on screen. SIM2 has invested heavily in the development of a highprecision telecentric optical system. The pure glass lens provides an impressive resolution of 93 lines per mm to guarantee onscreen clarity. Special coatings have been applied to the optical components to further enhance image and colour performance. Installation aids include fully motorised zoom and focus, plus optical lens shift to adjust the position of the image. NERO4 UHD also includes Perfect Fit, a fully-programmable zoom, focus and lens shift feature. The SIM2 xTV is a brand new, elegantly designed, short throw projector. A compact form, the xTV fits comfortably on a table, ceiling or flush mounts into joinery. Sacrificing neither form nor function, the xTV is housed in a pure crystal glass cabinet that uses laser illumination technology and is an all-digital device. Screen Innovations is probably best known for Black Diamond, its multi-directional ambient light rejection projection screen technology, and has focused primarily on improving the two-piece projection category by producing screens that deliver high-quality images in light or dark environments. Solo Pro is a rollable and wireless screen. According to the maker, at Solo Pro’s core is an intelligent lithium powered motor that is capable of being recharge 500 times, lasting two years on a single cycle. Available in custom screen sizes and configurations up to 150in, the screen’s Black Diamond technology rejects light from all directions except for the direction of the projector. Combining UHD 4K resolution with HDR, Vivitek’s compact HK2288 projector promises big screen detail and contrast with low-latency processing, available from Karma-AV.

The HK2288’s UHD-4K pixel resolution is enhanced by the finer shadow detail, textures and highlights of an outstanding 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio involving up to 2,000 ANSI lumens brightness. The 2288’s advanced video processing offers smooth upscaling and motion, as well as a low latency input lag (around 50 milliseconds). Comprehensive gamma and colour management adjustments are available to optimise a wide REC709 colour space from a six-segment RGB colour wheel. Three HDMI 2.0 inputs are offered and dual infrared sensors positioned front and back allow for easy control from a remote. Lamp life of up to 4,000 hours is possible in Dynamic Economy Mode. Ultimate Screens now offers high performance 4K ready acoustically transparent screens, designed for an easy install, with a four stage process. Many other brands require the screen to be attached to frame and tensioned face down on the ground, risking damage to the velvet frame and screen material. The Ultimate Screens design allows this process to be completed in simple stages after the frame is attached on the wall. The Original product uses a magnetic bezel, front fabric mounting system and has a 78mm wide velvet covered bezel. The Original is a very elegant screen, says the maker, as the width of the facia is exactly twice the depth of the facia. The velvet surround perfectly frames and enhances the contrast of any projected image, while also creating a clean modern appearance. The Slim screen uses the same magnetic bezel and front fabric mounting system as the Original Fixed frame screen but with a slimmer bezel. The Edge screen uses the fabric mounting system as the Original but with a 2mm bezel. Ultimate Screens says the Edge is an ideal screen for dual-role living room and boardroom environments, offering a high performance acoustically transparent screen surface while having a clean unobtrusive appearance for a finer blend with décor.

Essential Install | Acoustic Treatment

Artnovian panels can create various artistic patterns when mounted

Sweet treats

Often overlooked or only considered as an afterthought, acoustic treatments are arguably the single largest contributing component within a home cinema system when it comes to ensuring that the experience is recreated exactly as the director and audio engineers intended it to be. Acoustics should be regarded as the foundations of any home cinema environment, and not simply a bandage to fix problems as they become apparent upon completion of the installation. The industry’s leading home cinema designers know and understand the importance of acoustic treatments, and some are turning to Artnovion for support, expertise and elegant acoustic solutions, to provide some of the best sounding and aesthetically pleasing rooms for their clients.

Engineering performance

Artnovion’s Absorber decorative panels are made from wood, fabric or foam

With a talented team, Artnovion works hard to push the boundaries of acoustic engineering to create a unique collection of high performance products. According to the maker, its every day mission is to drive innovation and engineer acoustic performance, combining these to create unlimited design possibilities. Artnovion believes that simple is more and performance flourishes from emotion. Flat reflective surfaces are known to cause interfering reflections and excessive echo, which can impose restrictions on the functionality of a home cinema or Hi-Fi room. To address specific needs, Artnovion developed the Absorber ranges, decorative and innovative panels made from wood, fabric or foam, with acoustically optimised patterns that eliminate sound radiation effects, offering reflection and reverberation control.

Developed specifically to interrupt discrete echoes by scattering or diffusing sound energy over a wide area without removing it from the room, Diffusion improves sound and speech clarity, says Artnovian. Diffuser panels are an attractive furniture grade wooden acoustic panel, designed for mid/ high frequency sound diffusion with a range of 250Hz up to 4000Hz.

Trapping bass

As a final offering, to fill the gap in the low frequency treatment that usually becomes problematic in smaller rooms, Artnovian developed Bass Trap panels. With an absorption effect from 45Hz to 125Hz, the Bass Trap panels offer an enriched acoustic experience, helping reduce directly standing sound waves and their reflections. With a wooden finish, the panels can create various artistic patterns when mounted on the side of back walls of home cinemas or living rooms. Artnovian products are available in the UK from Invision. “Room acoustics have long been considered a black art and many dealer/installers have been seemingly unwilling to start the conversation regarding this complicated subject,” says Mike Beatty, managing director at Pulse Cinemas. The team at Pulse, whilst updating the company’s facilities in Stansted, have included many of the products on demonstration from the latest addition to Pulse’s portfolio.

Essential Install | Acoustic Treatment

Vicoustic panels feature in Pulse’s updated HQ

Vicoustic, which Pulse says is a brand with experience and pedigree, now offer Pulse the ability to offer a full range of acoustic treatments. Commenting on the range, Charlie McClarren, Pulse’s sales manager says, “Vicoustic Flat Panel VMT panels are now available and shipping; coming in 6 different sizes and 48 finishes. Concrete and marble are amongst the copious finishes available. We are now stocking a range of finished and raw panels at a great price.”

Entry level price points

Known for offering dealer/installers support on some of the UK’s finest and most high-end installs, it’s great to see Pulse speaking with such enthusiasm about the company’s latest entry level systems. An example of the new acoustic offering is a box of 10 1200x600x40mm absorption panels, retailing at under £200. Vicoustic are based in Portugal and Pulse, a company not to miss an opportunity for a trip abroad, are about to organise a summer dealer trip, to see this marvellous facility. Dealers wanting to experience the range, to understand the importance of acoustic materials, but who aren’t able to leave the UK, would be advised to take the trip to Pulse HQ. “In these amazing days of immersive audio formats, it is easy to forget that the sound from the speakers is only part of what we hear,” says Genesis Technologies’ owner and MD Neil Davidson. The other part of the sound experience are the characteristics of the room itself and good acoustics maximise the potential of the system to ensure that the client’s cinema experience is of the highest order. Neil explains, “All too often, when it comes to acoustic treatment, we see one of these approaches: it’s too complicated so they do nothing; they use loads of rock wool so they make the room nice and dead; or they get an expert to help, hoping they know about cinema acoustics.” “Interestingly, doing nothing is usually a much better choice than option two, despite the endless photos of cinema builds suggesting otherwise, but wouldn’t it be better if there was an option 2.5, to use real acoustic treatments created by experts in home cinema, who have

created easy rules to ensure good results in most rooms?” Neil comments. “In 2015, I launched Cinema-ATS Packs, an acoustic treatment solution specifically designed as a pragmatic acoustic solution that was easy to sell, easy to transport, easy to install and delivered great results, without requiring the services of an expert every time.” Cinema-ATS Packs breaks acoustics down into three simple categories, called the 3Rs of acoustics. Each element within a Cinema-ATS Packs solution is designed to effectively tackle the 3Rs using a simple set of guides which deliver high quality results every time. The 3Rs of acoustics: • Resonance – The effect of sound waves bouncing repeatedly between the room boundaries. • Reverberation – The effect of sound waves taking some to decay to silence. • Reflection – The effect of sound waves bouncing off a boundary Cinema-ATS simple layout guidelines help to locate subwoofers to reduce resonance issues when combined with any room correction system. The Cinema-ATS Foamsorber Panel is used to provide absorption to control resonance and reverberation in the room, which come in packs of 12. The Cinema-ATS Scattering Panel is used to provide control of reflections and to meet Cinema-ATS reverberation targets, and also comes in a 12 pack. Each of the panels is 300x300x50mm in size which makes it easy to store and transport while also minimising any cuts needed to fit the panels into a room, and limiting any lost space. Neil says it is possible to deliver excellent results with just two Cinema-ATS packs and performance is steadily increased as more are added, up to a maximum of 10 in total, where all four walls and the ceiling are treated. According to the maker, Cinema-ATS Packs are the most pragmatic, easy to use and reliable acoustic solution on the market, and a great entry to the advanced CinemaATS Complete Standard, Premium and Ultimate solutions. Cinema-ATS products are available from UK distributors Genesis Technologies and Meridian.

Essential Install | Security

The Moon features patented 360° stabilised levitation technology

Safe and sound

There’s been an exponential growth in demand for smart home products, with thoughtful solutions to important problems in the home, such as safety, security and comfort, being key for consumers. A recent survey by Nest found that 63% of consumers cited home security as the biggest reason to purchase a smart home device, with 40% of these naming connected cameras as the most popular to invest in first. EI records what’s out there. A novel entry into the marketplace came from technology startup 1-Ring, who started a crowdfunding campaign for the Moon, the world’s first all-in-one smart home hub with a levitating 360° camera. Packed with a plethora of smart home functionality, the hub reveals itself as a fully-fledged home automation solution to monitor and control residential environments. The Moon features patented 360° stabilised levitation technology, allowing the camera to rotate freely at the swipe of a fingertip. Including everything expected from modern home security camera including full HD with night vision, motion detection and smart notifications. The Moon also features three high-precision microphones to accurately identify the source and direction of incoming sound, and rotate the camera accordingly.

The new Nest Cam IQ range can distinguish faces

Smart connections

Equally useful is the integration of a programmable IR Blaster and other major home automation standards, ZigBee, Z-Wave and Bluetooth Smart. This turns the Moon into a cross-standard smart home hub that integrates with Philips Hue, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple Homekit and other services in the Internet of Things, as well as TVs or stereo systems. The integrated temperature, humidity, CO2 and light sensors further enable the camera to monitor the environment and automatically react. “The very idea to create the Moon came from a completely trivial problem,” says Sergo Oganov, cofounder of Moon. “I was looking for a comprehensive solution to automate and secure my newly renovated

house, but not smash it up,” he says. “Though the market offers a wide range of gadgets, they were offering just a partial solution to my problem. That was the landmark point where the creation of the versatile and all-in-one solution came to my mind. Two and a half years of hard work and dedication resulted in this device, combining the fullest list of smart hub features with a wide bouquet of sensors and a levitating 360° security camera.” All smart hub features are easily accessible through the Moon Commander, an intuitive app available for Android, IOS and watch OS platforms.

Know the facts

A recent report by Nest revealed that three out of four British people think their homes are secure, despite more than half admitting to being a victim of burglary, and that nearly a 1/3 of break ins reported now target outdoor buildings, sheds or storage spaces. What’s more, research from the Citizens Advice Bureau found that 1 in 5 UK consumers have already had a delivery go missing, showing the need for 360° security solutions that keep an eye on the things, and ones, people care about. The Nest Cam range, including the Nest Cam Indoor, Nest Cam IQ, Nest Cam Outdoor and Nest Cam IQ Outdoor show users the full picture in 1080p HD and 130° views. When it’s dark, night vision illuminates the whole scene, letting users watch the action live 24/7 from their phone or tablet. And, if they see something that requires their attention, a built-in speaker and microphone will let them talk back to get the subjects notice.

and granting access through secured doors or motorised gates. Crestron systems include a quad-view video processor, enabling homeowners to see visitors and what they are carrying from four angles at once, or view up to four different locations in the house at the same time. While away from the home, the Crestron app turns an iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or Android device into the ultimate Crestron touchscreen, enabling whole home control including AV, lighting, shades, HVAC and security remotely.

Crestron’s home automation app Pyng

The Nest Cam IQ Outdoor provides an opportunity for installers as it requires professional support to fix to external walls, and wire the camera to an indoor or outdoor power source. Consumers can’t always be watching, and great security isn’t just about having the clearest lens or brightest night vision, it’s about helping homeowners identify important moments quickly. With Nest Aware (sold separately), users get 24/7 continuous cloud recording, clip sharing, and more intelligent and convenient alerts.

Facial recognition

Habitech’s Dahua Technology has launched a system of ePoE devices

With person alerts customers will receive a notification if the device detects a person, not just motion or sound. The new Nest Cam IQ range can even distinguish faces, sending alerts when it sees specific people or a stranger, as well as automatically zooming in and tracking movement. The Nest Can IQ Indoor is also the first security camera to have Google Assistant built in and will be available via a free software update this winter. There will be numerous other integrations that allow the camera to communicate with the latest Nest products, such as the Nest Secure alarm system and Nest Hello video doorbell. Security is a homeowner’s priority when it comes to installing AV technology, and easy integration is ideal. Crestron integrates with many third-party security systems, bringing all security elements such as alarms, door entry, CCTV cameras, security gates and intercom systems together. Crestron’s latest range of touchscreens and hand-held remotes can operate as an interface using built in microphones, speakers and voice control from anywhere in the home and a full Crestron system can enable any TV to act as a CCTV monitor to suit the owners lifestyle, and help enhance the sense of security. For example, video is displayed in a window within the Crestron app, letting homeowner’s see what’s going on, while simultaneously communicating over the intercom

In smaller projects, Crestron’s home automation app Pyng is worth considering because it quickly and easily configures and controls whole home audio systems, including door locks and security systems, in just a few easy steps, without the need for programming. Pyng puts the control into the hands of the homeowner who can make changes to scenes, settings and devices via an iPad or touchscreen. For surveillance of larger spaces such as a big warehouse, parks, gardens and outdoor parking, camera locations are dispersed quite a distance from the control centre. Dahua Technology, available via Habitech, has launched a system of extended Power over Ethernet (ePoE) devices including cameras, network switches and network recorders, which overcome the traditional 100m range limitation of Ethernet and POE between network ports, and eliminates the need for Ethernet extension devices or additional network switches. The conventional approach is to extend the transmission distance by adding repeater devices, but this method increases the cost of equipment and installation, and the risk of product failure, says the maker. The fibre optic alternative requires a power supply at the camera side to power the fibre transceiver as well as the camera. The new Dahua ePoE IP system supports up to 800m between an ePoE camera and ePoE network switch or ePoE NVR (with embedded switch) and simplifies network design as only one cable is required to connect from the front-end to the back-end devices, resulting in higher reliability and lower system installation and maintenance costs. Dahua ePoE includes the following features: extended PoE transmission, 800m/10Mbps/13W or 300m/100Mbps/25.4W, automatic set up, analogue to IP migration, IP video, audio, control & power over coax cable with LR1002 ePoE to BNC adaptor. ePoE series network cameras cover resolutions from 1080P to 4K, and have rich selections of camera form factors (box, bullet, dome, eyeball) and lens types (vari-focal, fixed lens), which can meet most surveillance requirements. All have Dahua’s 3.0 series feature set including smart video detection (tripwire, intrusion, abandoned/missing detection), face detection and smart H.265+ encoding. The Dahua DH-IPC-HDW4431MP entry-level 4MP IR Eyeball Network camera is equipped with IP67 weather and IK10 anti-violence protection, Intelligent Video System (IVS) analytics, up to 4MP (2688×1520) imaging capability with WDR contrast optimisation. The Dahua DH-TPC-BF2120 Thermal Network Mini Hybrid Bullet Camera is a new smart thermal/IR hybrid device equipped with dual day/night role involving a high sensitivity thermal camera for monitoring during complete darkness. This is also IP67 rated for inside and all-weather applications, and includes wide choice of Intelligent Video Surveillance (IVS) analytics. Habitech says its perfect for longer range for intruder and fire detection in all conditions.

Life-saving integration

Coordinated’s fire alarm is virtually invisible (small black dot)

Speaking of fire detection, should a custom installer be involved with fire alarms? “Of course, they already are in many ways, not necessarily installing them but certainly understanding them and integrating with them as electronic architects,” says John Dupree, founder and managing director of Coordinated, a CEDIA professional services provider of fire and security systems. “They add real value to control systems custom installers are already installing. Ensuring fire alarm smart connectivity can mean a few seconds not fumbling for a light switch, a minute not turning down the volume in a cinema room to find out what that noise is, it can literally be life-saving integration for the customer.” Domestic Fire detection and alarm systems are designed, installed & maintained to BS5839 Part 6 and have three categories: LD1, LD2 & LD3. LD1 includes detection pretty much everywhere, LD2 reduces slightly to fire escape routes and rooms of high risk, and LD3 only protects the fire escape routes. There is a danger in the simplification of these classifications though, they only denote the detection coverage, not the audibility of the alarm which must still comply to BS5839.

Sounding sirens

A single smoke detector on a landing may not meet the 75dB sound levels required at a bed head through a modern door, and will not meet the required 65dB in an ensuite or dressing room. “I’m quite often asked by custom installers if they can enhance the sound levels via the AV system and speakers throughout the house,” continues John. “Currently, and for the near future, it’s not practical to do that due to the need for back-up batteries and there are regulations to avoid mixed sound types to avoid confusion. However, what can be done right now to aid audibility, is some simple integration to turn off the AV systems and televisions in the event of a fire. Why not turn on all the lights too? I’m certain that generations of installers to come will be providing this feature in all new homes by law.” John continues, “Have you ever seen our invisible fire alarm? Aspirating fire alarm detection systems have been around a long time now. They replace the typical white plastic smoke detector on ceilings with tiny, 4mm holes. These systems use a series of pipe work above the ceiling to transit smoke via a fan to a laser based detector. Originally designed for use in computer floors they are becoming more prevalent in the world’s best homes for their near invisible quality.”

In-house expertise

The Somfy One has smart pet detection

Having excellent relationships with key suppliers of CCTV, Pro-Vision has access to the technical support provided by the manufacturers and both the internal and external sales teams receive regular product training from the manufacturers, either at their head office in Shrewsbury or at the manufacturers premises. The RTI ecosystem allows for full control over security devices from any RTI user interface, including wireless remote controls, in-wall controllers and apps. Many of these solutions also support video intercom, including its KX3, KX7, and KX10 in-wall touchpanels, and the CX7 and new CX10 countertop/under-cabinet touchpanels. Additionally, many of RTI’s interfaces feature video inputs and/or Ethernet support for viewing surveillance video from camera systems. The makers offer two-way drivers for integration with security devices, including traditional security systems, door locks, video DVRs and door stations. Furthermore, automation of lighting and shades can easily be incorporated via the astronomical clock built into the XP processors, which can be used to provide security measures. The RTiPanel app provides users with intuitive, custom control both locally or remotely, anywhere there is a Wi-Fi connection or cellular data. With one app, users have complete control over all systems in the home, eliminating the hassle of managing a multitude of apps for different devices. More and more dealers are looking for integration with security systems, video surveillance systems, video intercom and Z-Wave devices such as door locks. Looking forward, RTI believes that Z-Wave devices and wireless sensors, such as water and carbon monoxide detection,

are gaining in popularity as their prices are coming down and functionality is increasing. Somfy Protect is a security solution of connected alarms and video surveillance cameras. When wirelessly connected, it provides a DIY solution that gives users greater flexibility when positioning their sensors, sirens and cameras. The sensors, sirens and KeyFob are wirelessly connected to the alarm hub or cameras, which in turn, are connected to the cloud through Wi-Fi. The Somfy Protect solution is managed through the Somfy app which is available on all Android and iOS devices. Via this application, users can setup their devices, manage users, organise their security activation automation and access video-surveillance. In the event of a break-in, users are also automatically alerted about an intrusion with a 10 second clip which can be downloaded from the app and shared with the relevant authorities. Homeowners can control their home security and share tailor-made access with family, friends or neighbours. Somfy Protect is compatible with TaHoma, IFTTT, Nest and Amazon Alexa. The openness strategy is strongly bound to Somfy’s vision of giving users as much flexibility and added value as possible.

The future of security

EI caught up with Jean-Sébastien Prunet, marketing director at Somfy Protect, to find out what he thinks will be the next big thing in home protection. “In the last four decades home security has been a great burden to many,” says Jean-Sébastien. “To combat this, our main aim for the past 10 years has been to revolutionise the home security experience with unobtrusive and simple solutions that mean individuals no longer have to worry about forgetting to activate their alarm or remember passcodes.” Jean-Sébastien believes that “the main changes in the future of home security will be brought by two main factors: the digitalisation of products to enable a better level of service and security to customers. This will in turn simplify and reduce the cost of maintenance and support. Secondly, that security services will slowly become hardware agnostic by leveraging smart home platforms and compatibilities. Together, these two elements will probably revolutionise the category by making the traditional professional monitoring model obsolete, in terms of security services, user benefits, as well as of course price positioning.”

Essential Install | Smart Thinking

How home security is much more than IoT

Herbert Hellemann, CEO of BuddyGuard, home security specialist, discusses the impact of the IoT revolution on the market, and predicts how AI will shape the future. Herbert Hellemann, CEO of BuddyGuard

It has been well documented that Internet of Things (IoT) enabled devices are set to be a defining feature of our forthcoming technological revolution. Research analyst house Gartner reported that in 2017, 8.4 billion connected devices are being used. They predict that by 2020 the total amount of connected devices will reach 20.4 billion. Thus far, the most commonly cited examples of real world IoT applications have been within the home. From smart fridges to connected kettles, some home IoT gadgets have been criticised as quirky and somewhat unnecessary additions to the home. Home security, though, has been one area that people have turned to with genuine interest.

Safety is paramount It makes sense - people care about protecting what matters to them the most. IoT devices, like remotely controlled door locks or apps that tell you when you have turned your hair iron off, are changing the way that we keep ourselves and our homes safe. Despite this, the spread of IoT devices has raised some inevitable questions about cyber security and internet dependency. Comprehensive networks of interconnected devices are certainly vulnerable to cyber-attacks. A HP study on IoT found that up to 70% of these devices do not encrypt communications or require any sort of password log in, making them an obvious target for hackers. Aside from issues of cyber protection, the interdependency of various IoT devices also compromises their efficaciousness. If one device were to lose internet connection or power, this would mean that the remaining devices in the chain may not be able to function properly. Once one device fails, the rest in the chain can’t respond accordingly.

Artificially intelligent AI adds a new dimension to IoT home security systems

In order for IoT devices to provide genuine solutions in home security, we must look to artificial intelligence. IoT enabled devices are only capable of collecting, transferring and responding to information that passes between them. AI enabled technologies are able to make much more valuable use of this data. They do this by

interpreting it, ‘learning’ from it and ultimately using it to inform autonomous decision making. AI adds both a new dimension to home security and ease to existing IoT home security systems. The ‘rules’ by which typical camera-based home security devices operate are defined by the programmers who design them. This means that any and all deviations from these rules will send a notification to the home owners phone. High levels of low quality alerts to the home owner are not only time consuming but can reduce the likelihood that they take a notification indicative of a real threat seriously.

Smart learning

AI diminishes this issue by providing users with a smaller number of higher quality alerts. Sophisticated machine learning technology uses facial and speech recognition to truly understand what to consider as safe or unsafe within the home. This means that the user is not bombarded with useless notifications because the device can distinguish genuine security threats itself. These singular home security systems are safer than employing a web of various IoT connected security devices. FLARE, for instance, only connects with the user’s phone and is 3G-enabled, meaning that it cannot be accessed by hackers via the Wi-Fi. It also means that it cannot be compromised should the Wi-Fi fail. IoT will undeniably shape the way that our homes look and work in the not-so-distant future, but we must be careful that we don’t encourage connectivity for connectivity’s sake. The ability to safeguard and monitor our homes remotely is one that we have long been waiting for, as long as our safety is not compromised in the process. Home security is much more than just an interconnected network of devices that enhance security. When utilised correctly, home security means allowing intelligent software to monitor the home and alert you only if and when it is needed. In the face of our coming industrial revolution, and with new technologies emerging every day, we must be diligent in separating the technology that will enhance our security from those that might not. After a successful new UK product launch for its music streamer Poly/ Mojo, wholly British owned Hi-Fi specialists Chord Electronics invited EI to visit the company’s unique HQ, the Pump House, in Maidstone, Kent, to find out how this award-winning company has earned its high quality reputation. Built in the 1860s, Chord’s HQ was an actual steam pump house, pumping fresh drinking water to the locals, until it became infected with cholera and was subsequently abandoned. It remained derelict until WW2, when it was taken over by the RAF and used as an operations base. Chord bought the property in 1996, though it was seriously dilapidated, with no roof or any flooring, and in need of some TLC. “The engineering of the building suited exactly what we at Chord do, it was a perfect match,” comments Matthew Bartlett, Chord’s manufacturing director. “We began to renovate the premises immediately, luckily as it’s a Victorian building, the structure remained very solid and strong, so it was really just an interior cleanup job.” And what an interior it is, filled with quirky spaces where you’ll find technicians hard at work soldering

Chord’s products are made in-house, by hand.

different parts, turn round the corner and you’ll find stacks of boxes ready to be sorted and send out to expectant audiophiles, and for the grand finale, head up a few stairs to marvel in the luxurious listening room, which boasts particularly spectacular Kent views. It’s no wonder this has remained Chord’s base for 20 years.

Perfect production

Apart from the initial circuit boards, the process of assembly, finishing, testing, packing and sending to the client is produced entirely in-house, by hand. The process starts with the technical team, hand soldering the boards with faultless precision, and placing into the chassis, pulling all the parts in together. Another team member will build the back end of the amplifier, including the proprietary components exclusive to Chord, designed by Chord’s founder John Franks. Six exquisite ranges are included in Chord’s arsenal; Chord Reference, Chord, Choral, Chordette, TT and Mobile, all designed and created in-house. The Chord Reference range is the flapship line for the company, comprised of full size, full power amplifiers. TT and Mobile are the product ranges Chord is best known for, a superb collection of portable/tabletop DAC/headphone amplifiers. It combines elements from Chord’s Reference DAC technology with the latest battery advances and has a comprehensive input and output selection. The range has all the benefits of a full-size system, but in a convenient and compact chassis.

Choral has proven most popular amongst music enthusiasts; DAVE, a reference digital to analogue convertor and headphone amplifier, and BLU MK2, Chord’s digital/ CD transport, are particularly in demand. Diminutive in their dimensions, components like the new Qutest DAC, are palmsized yet powerful. Using the same technology found within Hugo 2, the CES 2018-debuting Qutest , offers a simple, compact and affordable standalone solution. From power amplifiers to music streamers, the Reference range is beautifully designed and offers fine engineering. Matthew says that, “the range encompasses the best of our expertise and proprietary technologies.” Finally, Chord’s newest range is Mobile, a pocketable and portable device range, which includes Poly and Mojo.

Inspiration and invention

Matthew Bartlett

“John is a visionary for products,” says Matthew. “He has driven the company in the direction it’s taken, creating new product ideas from emerging technologies and realising their potential in the marketplace.” One of these bright ideas formed the basis for Poly, a portable music streamer/ player that combines with Mojo to wirelessly stream from connected devices and playback from its Micro SD, all with smartphone control. It enables Hi-Fi sound quality in the home or on-the-go, with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay and network connectivity, and upgrades headphones, cars and home audio performances. “John and I work really well together as a creative unit, and also with Rob Watts, who consults with Chord on digital design and with our DAC technology,” continues Matthew. This creative coupling led to many ideas, including Mojo, a portable DAC/Headphone amplifier. A multi-award winner, Mojo can be paired with a smartphone, tablet, music player, DAP, games console, PC, Mac, or almost anything that allows audio out via USB, Optical, or Coax. It also has an impressive 10 hour battery life. Because Mojo is designed and built in England using only the finest components, using the world’s most sophisticated machines, with a solid CNC milled aluminium shell with fun globe style LED indicators, customers can be sure that Mojo still retains Chord’s renowned reliability, build quality, and tank-proof aesthetic. Combined with the latest trickle-down FPGA DAC technology from the TT series and DAVE products, Mojo is a great pocketable device that offers Hugo-like performance for a fraction of the cost.

Custom install Chord’s technicians work on key components with perfect precision

“We’ve always been known for our power amplifiers, it was our initial entry into people’s homes, and now these customers are looking for ways to enhance their systems, and so we’re always looking to the CI market,” explains

Matthew. “A lot of our customers will buy our products for their homes, love the experience, and go on to buy more products for their yachts, holiday homes and other spaces.” The Choral products, due to their compact size, are popular in the super yacht market as they are space saving, a desired design quality. “It’s a market we hope to grow into and do more with, we’d like to work with more partners in the CI industry in 2018.”

Future plans

So what are Chord’s plans going into 2018? Matthew says, “We’re a company that never stands still, we know the competition is strong, and everyone in the industry is always trying to make the next big thing. We want to keep developing, too, but our main focus will be with Poly, which we’re currently launching in Korea.” That’ll be the driving factor for Chord throughout the year, showcasing Poly at CES, offering wireless firmware upgrades and adding new features. The company will be promoting the combination with Mojo, and also Hugo 2, a transportable DAC/ Headphone amplifier, which is still new to the market. The terrific team at Chord bounce ideas off each other and work in simpatico. There’s a rhythm emanating from the space, a real hub of creativity. Their products ooze quality, sophistication and authentic craftmanship. Truly a pleasure to experience. Chord Electronics 01622 721 444, chordelectronics.co.uk

Essential Install | Crestron

EXCLUSIVE:

Crestron’s next big pyng

In an Essential Install exclusive, Doug Jacobson, director of residential technology at Crestron, explains what the company will launch at ISE 2018, revealing a line-up of products designed to feel and look elegant in the home and the hand, as well as deliver the performance installers and end users are looking for. Crestron’s line-up for ISE will include a set of wall mounted keypads and handheld remotes

Throwing shade

Guiding light

Shading products have seen loads of growth recently and not just in sunnier countries; multi-functional shading has proven popular in northern Europe delivering more than just light control. With this phenomenon in mind, Crestron will launch a new line, Horizontal Sheers, which delivers different levels of light control as well as privacy settings in one unit. The products have been created to do the job which often takes two sets of shades to achieve, saving space whilst delivering an elegant solution with strong functionality and aesthetics.

A key part of the Crestron’s line up for ISE will be a set of wall mounted keypads and handheld remotes. First up, the sleek looking 310-Series handheld remotes. The HR 310 is a push button model with nine custom buttons at the top of the device that can be engraved to suit whatever function they are assigned to. Three AAA batteries should deliver six months of life and there is also an automatic backlight to increase the functionality as well as the aesthetic performance. Moving up the range, the TSR-310 offers a 3in touchscreen with 93% more pixels and 50% higher pixel density than previous models such

Essential Install | Crestron

as the TSR-302. Also included is an integrated mic to take advantage of Crestron voice control compatibility. Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n2.4/5 GHz) performance should deliver fast reaction times and the unit is designed to run for three/four days without needing a charge, but of course comes with its own holder/charger unit. Doug says, “Crestron products should feel special when you touch them, the aim here was to create interfaces that look and feel positive when you touch them and underline to the client that Crestron is a highend proposition.” Four button styles will be available and the units will have a multi-colour backlight to indicate different types of functionality or importance. Rows of up to four can be used together. There is also a special system which means when grouped together the keypads are in perfect alignment. There are matching top and bottom trims which can be customised and the trims are easy to swap out as they are magnetic. There will be a matching range of connection accessories for audio connection or charging. This range will launch spring 2018.

Signalling the future

Crestron’s new Horizontal Sheers deliver different levels of light control

New for the European market and being launched at ISE will be the DM XiO Director, designed to deliver enterprise provisioning and management of the Crestron DM NVX Series Network AV Solution. Crestron has been keen to show how the DM NVX Series can deliver strong performance particularly in getting 4K60, 4:4:4, and HDR video over a standard 1Gb Ethernet network. The new product takes this concept a step further by moving away from a physical matrix to manage and distribute AV signals and control to a software controlled system where the intelligence moves to the network. A ‘virtual switcher’ if you will. The DM XiO Director acts as a centralised virtual switcher, delivering the configuration, control, and management of large-scale DM NVX Series AV networks. Offering a new dimension to the DM NVX Series, the product has been designed to deliver a new level of scalability and flexibility. Doug also says that the concept makes it much simpler to manage large systems made up of DM NVX endpoints, all still over a standard IP network. Models in the range offer control of a varying number of end-point devices, supporting 80 is the DM-XIO-DIR-80, 160 the DM-XIO-DIR-160, or if the project is really large, unlimited with the DMXIO-DIR-ENT. System control, config and maintenance is delivered over a web-based UI interface and there is a search box to easily find domains, endpoints, inputs, and outputs by name or address. A system overview screen is also available, showing the video and audio signal status for every input and output in a graphical layout. Another signal solution featured at the show will be DSC Compression, developed in-house by Crestron to help legacy systems cope with the higher demands being placed on them and offering an upgrade path for installers to return to existing customers with.

More bling for Pyng

Pyng has been out in the market for some time now and Crestron is keen to keep improving and adding to the system. Doug says, “Whilst we are happy at how Pyng has been evolving, the missing part was always video control, we are now ready to deliver that from within the Pyng app.” Pyng will now be able to control TVs, video sources and AV receivers and will also support the ‘traditional’ Crestron DM product family and DM NVX product lines. The Pyng app will also offer increased customisation options for larger macros for all-on all-off or special event type scenarios. Doug adds, “We also wanted to deliver on third-party compatibility, so will offer 100s of the most popular AV devices at launch, however we will also announce our Rapid Agile Drivers (RAD) certification programme, so installers of third party driver writers can create connections between Pyng and AV products.” Pyng will also be able to self populate with autochannel line-ups, all the system needs to know is where it is and what content provider is being used and it will do the rest. The system can store favourite channels for a given set of different users. So all in all a pretty packed line-up for Crestron’s next ISE adventure, rest assured Essential Install will deliver all the major news as the show gets nearer. Crestron 0845 873 8787, crestron.com

Essential Install | Case Study

Star of the show

This romantic and fully automated ten seat theatre with a starlit ceiling was designed to provide the ultimate home cinema experience, whilst staying connected to the rest of the home. A great home theatre can transport viewers to the furthest reaches of the cinematic universe as convincingly as any commercial film venue. With that goal in mind, New York integration firm Robert Allen Multimedia perfected every detail and combined the latest ELAN control technology, top-notch design and a fibre optic starlit ceiling to create a home theatre that leaves guests and friends in awe. Robert Ainley of Robert Allen Multimedia had been working with the owners to integrate and automate this Westchester County, New York home when they decided to transform an unfinished area into a home theatre. According to Ainley, they pulled out all the stops and carefully considered every component and design element to maximise the cinema experience. “For this room, our clients wanted the ultimate everything,” Robert comments. “From the one-touch control, 4K projector and Dolby Atmos sound processing to the custom-designed seating, starlit ceiling and ground-lit walkways, this theatre is luxurious at every step.” When the family wants to watch a movie or perhaps watch the big game on a massive 184in screen, all they do is enter the theatre and use the ELAN HR200 remote to turn the whole system on. With that, the main lights dim, the starlit ceiling begins to sparkle, the JVC projector revs up, the 13-speaker, four-subwoofer sound system boots and the content sources come to life, ready to deliver the latest entertainment to the owners. “The simplicity of the theatre is one of its biggest benefits,” Robert adds. “All a viewer has to do is use a single remote or their iPad to start the entire system, then select their source and content. There’s nothing that needs to be set, no equipment that has to be turned on manually. When the movie is over, they simply hit the ‘OFF’ button on the remote and leave the room, where the lights will dim after 10 minutes thanks to the motion detectors.” Working with the owners’ interior designer, the install team custom designed the theatre to maximise comfort, aesthetics and utility. Even the seating was custom built, with the owners requesting slight changes to a standard design from Acoustic Smart. Floor and wall sound isolation systems from Kinetics Noise Control ensure the massive sound system is crystal clear in every seat, while the thoughtfully placed inceiling speakers and lighting accentuate the room whilst remaining nearly invisible.

“Not only did we optimise the room’s audio and video, we also modified an existing basement window well to add an extra exit for guaranteed safety and security,” Robert says. “It’s basically an escape door in case of emergency. It’s hidden behind one of the wall panels, and when the panel is opened, a light automatically turns on to aid in movement. The ELAN system is also programmed to turn the theatre lights on automatically if a fire alarm goes off anywhere in the home. When your home is 14,000 square feet, too large to monitor by yourself 24/7, these automatic alerts and actions are crucial for safety and peace of mind.” To protect all the high-end technology and ensure optimal performance, the team took full precautions and built a climate controlled rack closet at the rear of the room. The air conditioner that cools the rack also flows to the projector box, keeping the entire system below 90° at all times. Content sources include a Fusion Research Premier movie server and two Blu-ray players, while the system is managed by an ELAN gSC2 processor. The last line of equipment defence is provided by a Panamax MB1500 UPS, which protects from electrical surges and guarantees safe shut-off in case of a power outage. Essential Install | Day In The Life: Pyramid AV

Pyramid makes itself at home Nic Black, owner and MD of The Pyramid Group, gives EI the tour of the company’s showroom and explains why the company has chosen to expand into the domestic market.

Ladies Lake put down a marker of what the company could do in the domestic sector

62 | December 2017

The Pyramid Group operates in four separate sectors; commercial AV and installation, lighting design services, live events and the home automation and entertainment market. Based in Devon for over 20 years, the company now boasts a recently expanded HQ and showroom, located on the outskirts of Plymouth. It’s obvious how proud Nic and the team are of what they have achieved, a compact but well designed space which shows what the company can do in the domestic sector. “It’s really only the second week of the space being fully up and running,” explains Nic, “But we have already done two events, just to get the word out locally, but also to get the feel of the place and see how it works with visitors.” The set-up has already generated lots of interest and projects are already being discussed. Nic adds, “This has been three years in the making. We already had our offices upstairs and the large downstairs meeting room has been finished for a while, however the success we have had in the home market recently gave us the impetus to make the final push and finish the demo area and cinema.

“We are really proud that we have found success and still kept our Devon roots. I think it informs what we do, sure we might have to work a little harder as we are not directly located to one of the big install hot spots, but I actually think this is an advantage for us, it gives us more character as a company and pushes us to be more creative.” So, what was the catalyst for expanding the company’s presence in the home market? Nic enthuses, “We took on a project for an existing client located on a stunning spot overlooking the sea located at St Andrews, Scotland, called Ladies Lake. Bringing to bear our experience in other sectors on this stunning new build property underlined how much we could deliver in the home sector and create something different.” Nic’s statement is no idle boast, as the project won ‘Best Lighting, Control and Installation’ and was shortlisted for ‘Best Integrated Home’ at this year’s CEDIA EMEA Awards, it also won ‘Best Whole Home Project’, again in the EMEA region at this year’s Control4 ISE Awards. Delivering a complete home automation and entertainment solution, this project is also particularly notable for its impressive use of lighting inside and outside, working with its spectacular setting overlooking the sea.

Taking the tour

Pyramid’s new cinema is very impressive

Nic says, “Lighting has always been a particular passion of mine, my first job was in lighting and it’s been a strong theme in our work over the years. For this property we created something unique, a circadian lighting system that mimics the natural sun’s light to help human biological rhythms stay in tune with the environment. The system also helps the client deal with jet-lag as they are based overseas and travel from there to the property. Using drivers we created ourselves for Control4, we integrated a hybrid system of DMX and DALI luminaires tied into an astronomical clock, and our own dynamic lighting curve in order to deliver the fully synchronised internal lighting.” The next significant project was another new build, this time in Cambridge where the company delivered a whole home system and home cinema, which won the CEDIA Award for Best Home Cinema in the £40,000 – £120,000 category. Nic says, “This was for an existing client who is a real AV fan and he was always going to have a cinema in his new home and we again showed what we could do in the domestic sphere.” The company is also currently working on a seven seat cinema a little closer to home. Nic explains, “We were up against some better known dealers in the sector for this one and had to work hard to win the project by doing several visits with the client. “The client is a real movie buff and has a huge collection of movies, but I think the clincher was when he heard just how good his music could sound. With our domestic profile building, we identified a little bit of a gap in our work schedule in the run up to this year’s CEDIA awards and used that to get the showroom finished. Creative engineering is where we are at, always has been, every nut and bolt in our showroom is ‘us’.”

Pyramid has a bit of an ace in the whole when it comes to getting its audio right, the internal team know their stuff, but when you can call on the services of Simon Honywill, who has been the lead sound consultant at Glastonbury Festival Pyramid Stage since 2007, has toured with the likes of Goldfrapp, and has 38 years of experience in audio, that is no bad thing. Simon has helped create and tune the cinema and is in residence today doing some checks. Simon explains, “Sonically if you can get a system playing music correctly, the rest should follow. It’s interesting how we can get the room to react differently to different types of performance, its sounds very organic, very real world.” Nic adds, “Two factors determined what we did with our cinema. The physical size of the space we had available meant we decided to keep it compact and offer a solution which felt attainable for everyone. Obviously, we can up-scale, but we did not want to scare people off with something that looked too big and expensive. This played into the second factor, price, we wanted our systems to be deliverable starting from 30K all in.” The 7.2.4 set up features an Epson TW9300, DT Screen at 118in, the speakers are Artcoustic Spitfire 6-3 for LCR (custom bi-amped versions), two subs x 2 c/w Artcoustic amps, Target SL’s x 4 for surrounds, and Architect 1 in ceiling x 4 overheads. AV power is delivered by a Trinnov Altitude 16 – all 16 outputs being used to drive 13 speakers, an Oppo UDP 203 disc player, Anthem MCA50 amps, WyreStorm 4K matrix and a Kaleidescape Strato. Simon explains, “There are elements such as a custom designed bass trap in the roof, and some other treatments. We wanted the room to be as neutral as possible. Also, the offices are right upstairs so the staff needed to be able to work without being disturbed by the audio.” So, demo time, Simon begins with no visuals, just some tunes which show off the system’s musicality. A Grace Jones track, with super-producer Trevor Horn at his very best shows just how versatile and musical the system is. Right at the other end of the scale, AC/DC’s Have A Drink on Me, showed the system to be powerful, but not over powering. Onto the cinema and the bombing run sequence from Unbroken underlines the impressive performance again, it packs punch, but there is subtly there too. The scene excites and pulls the viewer in rather than blowing their ears back, never an enjoyable experience. It’s definitely one of the most impressive we’ve experienced for a while. When the compact size of the room is taken into account, accommodating just two Ineva seats, the achievement is even more impressive. As for the rest of the showroom, the automation and lighting schemes the company can offer are showcased cleverly, again in a pretty compact space, the company manages to show what is possible, but not pack in so much that customers are overwhelmed or put off. A great visit and particularly pleasing to see a company doing well away from the more urbanised areas often associated with our sector. Pyramid is using its experience, and its particular approach to build for the future, its recent clutch of awards in the domestic sector probably won’t be the last. The Rolling Stones turntable features the iconic lips logo

Hi-Fi manufacturer Pro-Ject Audio Systems has released a new Artist Series special edition turntable collaboration with one of the world’s greatest bands, The Rolling Stones. After successful collaborations with The Beatles, George Harrison and Parov Stelar, amongst others, the Austrian company proudly reveals a new turntable design in partnership with Ruby Tuesday rockers. The Rolling Stones Record Player is a collaboration between one of the world’s most iconic bands and an audiophile manufacturer. Adorned with the instantly recognisable ‘lips’ logo, first commissioned by lead singer Mick Jagger in 1970, for just the cosmetic appeal alone the turntable is a real collector’s item. But underneath the shell, there remains a high-quality turntable suited even to more expensive audio systems. Based on the design of Pro-Ject’s own icon, the Rolling Stones Record Player has the same technical layout as the Debut III turntable. The thick, non-resonant MDF plinth, decoupling feet, premium synchronous motor and belt-drive system successfully combine to make a stable, silent platform for vinyl. Finished with a sturdy metal platter and an 8.6in aluminium tonearm with Ortofon OM 10 cartridge, this special edition vinyl spinner will sing and perform like any other piece of luxury Hi-Fi. The Rolling Stones Record Player is a quirky piece of memorabilia, successfully combining great looks, quality sound and support for one of the world’s most important rock ‘n’ roll bands. The Pro-Ject Rolling Stones Record Player is available across the UK now. Available in high-gloss black or white finish. Henley Audio 01235 511 166, henleyaudio.co.uk

Upgrade parade

The latest firmware update to the UDP205 adds MQA decoding

The OPPO UDP-205 is a universal disc player specifically designed for audio performance, providing reference level sound quality for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and many other digital audio and video formats. The latest firmware update to the UDP-205 adds MQA decoding to the UDP-205’s digital audio file playback. When a user navigates through music files using the UDP-205’s music app, the player will be able to identify and decode files encoded with MQA. Listeners can enjoy the full benefit of MQA-encoded music with studio-quality sound. This firmware update is OPPO’s first step in supporting MQA. OPPO is continuing the work on MQA-CD support, as well as adding MQA decoding for the USB DAC and coaxial/optical inputs. The player utilises two ES9038PRO DACs, which are the flagship of the ESS Sabre Pro series. Output connectors include a dedicated RCA/XLR pair for stereo, and a 7.1-channel group for surround sound. Additionally, there is an HDMI audio output port with a unique clock jitter reduction circuit. A built-in headphone amplifier offers the users an intimate listening experience. In addition to playing back discs and digital files, the UDP-205 also features a USB DAC, a coaxial and an optical digital audio input, so users can take advantage of the excellent audio performance of the UDP205 with other sources. “Delivering reference audio performance has always been the core feature of the OPPO UDP-205 universal player. We are thrilled to work with MQA to incorporate MQA decoding into the player,” says Jason Liao, CTO of OPPO Digital. “Our audiophile customers will enjoy the lifelike and engaging listening experience with the studio master sound quality provided by MQA.” MQA founder & CTO, Bob Stuart, adds, “We are proud to be partners of OPPO and extremely happy that MQA’s technology has been incorporated into the UDP-205 universal disc player. This is just the start of our cooperation and we’re looking forward to enabling more features on more models across the OPPO range in the future.” Existing UDP-205 owners can update their players directly using the online firmware update feature if the player is connected to the Internet. The firmware is also available for downloading at OPPO Digital’s website. OPPO Digital 650 961 1118, oppodigital.com/blu-ray-udp-205

Savant launches AV over IP platform

IP functionality means retro fit and new build are accommodated

Savant says it is set to revolutionise luxury home entertainment with an end-to-end IP video and audio product lineup. Perhaps revolutionise is a little strong, AV over IP is hardly new, but fans of this system will appreciate what looks like a serious upgrade for the system. Savant has begun shipping its new IP Video products, an ultra-high-performance ‘pixel-perfect’ 4K video over IP switching platform, delivering premium distributed AV content to their residential and commercial clients. The new switching platform delivers 4K/60 4:4:4 HDR video distribution over IP with zero frame latency, leveraging Savant’s rich history in telecom to deliver an advanced high-speed scalable IP entertainment solution. The maker’s say integration professionals will appreciate the convenience of a centralised 10GbE switch, enabling high-bandwidth Ethernet connectivity throughout the project. Other new products in the lineup include the Savant IP Video 4 and 8 input video transmitters as well as Savant IP Video output receivers available with either fibre or copper as an option. Savant’s IP Audio lineup is also expanding, including the Savant IP Audio 50 (a renamed version of Savant’s Pro Audio 4), the company’s first scalable, wired, all in one music solution. However, what is brand new is the Savant IP Audio 125, a higher wattage amplifier/audio distribution system. The IP Audio 125 delivers all the functionality of the IP Audio 50, but with 125W per channel for dynamic audio reproduction; ample power to drive clear sound into large spaces such as outdoor entertainment. With all Savant IP Audio systems, users can control the products using the Savant Pro App, Pro Remote, or Touch in-wall control screens. “Delivering a superior control and entertainment experience through innovation has always been our goal here at Savant,” says Robert Madonna, CEO of Savant. “With the expanded IP Video and Audio product lineup, we have created a tremendous opportunity for our integrators to offer best-in-class performance and scalability for their clients.” Savant Systems Europe +01488 73366, www.savant.com

Surrounded by sound Systemline, part of Armour Home, is claiming an industry first with the latest addition to its range of multi-room audio products, designed specifically for the installation market. The S7 Netlink, created by the company’s UK development team, is a product which delivers a simple and seamless integration between whole house audio systems and home cinema across major AV receiver brands, says the maker. S7 Netlink addresses the issues of playing a multi-room audio system through a surround sound amplifier which can result in installers wiring separate stereo speakers for music to avoid integration issues, only to be faced with customers questioning why the music is not playing through their main speakers and subwoofer. Armour says that until now the only alternative has been to connect the multi-room system as a source that utilises the speakers, but this in turn can create complicated control issues. The new product solves this problem with a feature allowing it to directly take control of an AVR via a smart two-way interface (via RS232 or TCP/IP) meaning it is able to switch the receiver on, select the right input and control the volume, which is then correctly displayed on the S7 app. The user can then select the music or radio station they want using the S7 app in the same way they would in any other room connected to S7. Its creator says the S7 Netlink is the only product in the world to support control of major brand AVRs from Arcam, Denon, Marantz, Onkyo, Yamaha & NAD. The installer simply selects the brand, the input used and the control method from a simple web page setup. Paul Hilditch, brand manager at Systemline, says, “Integrating a whole house audio system and home cinema has always been a challenge for installers, but the launch of S7 Netlink is a game changer as it is simple to install and use.” Netlink is also a Hi-Fi streamer in its own right and will play digital music files up to 24bit, 192 kHz resolution. Perfectly synced

The Syncbox hybrid installation box can be installed in plasterboard or solid walls

After appearing on popular TV show Dragons Den in 2015 & successfully gaining investment from Deborah Meaden, Syncbox is proving popular among electricians and AV installers. Its latest product launch is the Syncbox hybrid installation box, which has been designed and patented to be used in both solid & plasterboard walls. For plasterboard walls, the design works on a ratchet clamping system, says the maker. Simply cut the hole in the desired position, insert the cables into the box, locate the box into the wall and pull the straps to tighten, it’s all rather simple. Should the install be in a solid wall, simply discard the straps and fix the box into position exactly the same way a conventional metal box would be installed. Every Syncbox comes with a hybrid installation box. This means installers won’t have to spend extra time changing installation boxes when installing into hard or dry walls. The slick finish of an installed Syncbox hidden socket with all connections hidden will be sure to give any room a modern and stylish feel to it. Syncbox 01622 688 551, sync-box.com

A vision of the future

The TC-HDMIWM creates its own Wi-Fi network in the 5GHz frequency band

Vision, investing heavily in wireless DisplayPort and HDMI technology, has introduced the new TC-HDMIWM Wireless Matrix product, which will start shipping from January. Each device has a channel selector which scrolls through 10 channels. Transmitters (Tx) connect to each source, and each are set to transmit on different channels. Clients can use up to 10 user-selectable Tx in the same Wi-Fi area since they all use different channels. Receivers (Rx) connect to the displays. To determine which source they show, just adjust the channel. It creates its own Wi-Fi network in the 5GHz frequency band and uses non-DFS channels to avoid interference. The signal is made secure with 128 bit AES encryption. The new product wirelessly matrixes, distributes, switches, or a combination of those. Vision say two key rules for system design are that each transmitter must be on different channels (so there is a limitation of 10 transmitters per Wi-Fi area), and a maximum of two receivers can connect to a transmitter. For switching applications, a ‘present’ button on the transmitters sends a command to the receiver saying, ‘switch to my channel’. As well as using the buttons on the front panel to select channels, an included IR remote control directly selects channels, or a control system can switch them via RS232. It includes IR blaster and receiver cables to allow control of the source device from the remote display and supports 20-60KHz frequencies. The Tx and Rx are sold separately and come with a lifetime warranty. Vision 01256 788 733, visionaudiovisual.com
