Editor’s Desk Space invader Niamh Marriott, Editor
Hello and welcome to the June issue of Essential Install. This month’s magazine is all about content, from the media servers that store customer’s favourite films to the matrixes that get the AV signal to where it needs to be. We’re also dipping our toes in the pool of commercial installs to explore the technology trends coming from the boardroom environment and taking a look at the world of commercial vehicles, that must have workhorse for every installer. The rise of digital signage gives us pause for comment as we investigate the most novel and innovative uses of brightly lit screens and digital displays. As we take a look at high-quality content delivery systems this month, its worth underlining the impact a top dedicated home cinema can make. Lots of conversations we have had of late tell us home cinema is on a charge at the moment with several install companies focusing in specifically on this area with new initiatives. Could it be that the profile of home cinema is rising to the point where it can rival other ‘luxury’ purchases such as cars, boats and the like? It seems possible. There is also the developer market to consider. In the new build world, developers are seeing competition like never before, providing gyms no longer cuts much ice with residents who now expect those types of facilities.
However, a cinema for the sole use of residents is a different proposition all together. It can add a real point of difference for developers and its an area they simply have no expertise in, so another potentially growing market. What is also great about these jobs of course is that they can be significant, 20/30 seaters with a good level of spec, well worth investigating. We also have a cracking case study this month which showcases the talents of NV Integration. Its not just a stunning project, but is slightly unusual in that it features a high-net-worth individual who is only too happy to be featured in the article. Check it out. I think a ho.me theatre is a luxury worth investing in. Also this month do check out our Day in the Life article which features New Wave AV during the opening of its now Certified Control4 showroom. An interesting move from Control4 looking to create more footfall for showrooms and provide dealers in the program with enhanced incentives. As ever, if you’d like to contribute to any of our upcoming features, or to discuss editorial opportunities, please don’t hesitate to get in touch, this is your industry and I always want to give you a platform to speak and share your thoughts. iRoom appoints RGB Communications as exclusive distributor for UK
RGB are excited to be distributing iRoom
iRoom, a manufacturer specialising in iPad docking stations, has announced the addition of UK distributor, RGB Communications. Both companies recently signed a distribution agreement that appoints RGB Communications the exclusive distribution rights for iRoom products in the UK. “We are really excited to have been appointed to represent iRoom,” says Gordon Innocent, Chairman of RGB Communications. “With their unique features and Apple certification, iRoom’s products are a perfect complement to any residential or commercial control or room management system”. iRoom started in 2008 as a system integrator for high end projects in the Salzburg/Austria area, but in 2010 they began engineering and manufacturing premium iPad docking stations for commercial and residential control applications; utilising table top and wall applications to include the iPad as part of the control system. The company has been able to extend its presence across the globe over the course of 10 years with more than 50,000 installations and today, iRoom sells its products through distributors in more than 90 countries. “We feel fortunate to be able to align our products with an organisation that has the resources and reach that RGB Communications offers throughout the UK,” adds Marc Hofer, founder and CEO at iRoom. “We are confident that RGB will establish and grow the iRoom brand. RGB is a reputable value-added distributor and provide training and profound technical support to its system integrators and dealers.” RGB Communications 01488 733 66, rgbcomms.co.uk
Microsoft launches 4K films in UK stores
Black Panther is now available to watch in 4K
Those looking to purchase 4K movies have several options in the UK, whether it be on iTunes, the Google Play Store, or a 4K Blu-ray disc. Now there’s another option available to consumers, as Microsoft has begun adding 4K films to its own online store. If this feels like déjà vu, that’s because the Microsoft Store technically carried 4K movies already. The only problem was that the content was unavailable outside of the US, with UK users only having the option to download 1080p movies. Now that is changing, and the Microsoft Store is carrying a 4K film that you can’t get on either iTunes or the Google Play Store – Black Panther. iTunes began offering 4K movies last year, with Apple offering those with 1080p downloads a free upgrade to the higher resolution format. Oddly enough, the only studio unhappy with those plans was Disney, which refused to allow any 4K movies on the iTunes store. When Google followed through with its own 4K plans, Disney was still noticeably absent. That means the Microsoft Store is one of the few places users will be able to purchase 4K copies of Disney films. The Microsoft Store’s 4K offering of Black Panther is considerably higher than similar 4K movies on both Google Play and iTunes. In fact, it comes with a £17.99 price tag, which is above the £13.99 users can expect to pay for a 4K movie on either of the other stores. Once the film is downloaded, users will have to watch it on the Xbox One S or One X, both of which have found a place in home cinemas around the world. Microsoft, microsoft.com/en-gb/store

Apple TV adds Dolby Atmos and compatibility with Control4, Crestron and Savant
Apple TV continues to offer interest to installers
At this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) the company announced that Dolby Atmos compatibility will be added to the Apple TV 4K system when the TVOS 12 version of the platform’s software is released. Compatibility with Control4, Crestron and Savant was also revealed. The company says the addition of Dolby Atmos makes Apple TV the first to boast Atmos and Dolby Vision, although this depends on how you define what is in and what is not in its product category. However, a welcome addition none the less and one that should attract interest from pro installers who look to the product as a price competitive way of getting content around a home via a platform many end users already like. 4K content from the on-line store for Apple TV has hit some decent numbers, so the roll out makes total sense, and is no massive surprise considering the company’s established relationship with Dolby. Apple TV continues to add services, will it maintain a place in the pro market? Apple has encouraged take up by offering free upgrades to 4K HDR for previously purchased films when Apple TV 4K first launched. It is set to do the same with Dolby Atmos with Apple offering upgrades for free for all content already purchased that now has a Dolby Atmos option. Apple TV is also getting compatibility via IP with Control4, Crestron and Savant automation platforms. The reference was scare of detail, but Crestron has released a short statement that said installers would, ‘soon be able to leverage the power of Apple TV, Siri, and HomeKit to enhance their clients’ lifestyles and user experience. First, it will enable IP control of Apple TV, including voice commands via the TSR-310 touchscreen remote control. And second, it allows users to use Siri on their iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or HomePod to control the Crestron devices in their home such as lights, shades and thermostats.’ Apple TV, apple.com

Forget yachts, in-flight entertainment revenues set to soar There are many custom installers who often branch out from the traditional residential install and dip their toes into the yacht market. Those feeling truly ambitious, however, may want to take a look at aviation, as a study from Juniper Research has found that in-flight entertainment and connectivity systems are set to be a very lucrative business by 2023. Both commercial airlines and private aircraft owners are increasingly turning to swanky in-flight entertainment systems, while Wi-Fi installation has also been a catalyst for growth. Service revenues are expected to reach $3.7 billion in 2018, although that will more than double by 2023 to $8.4 billion. While private aircraft owners may have deep pockets for the high-end systems, the main growth is supposedly coming from Low Cost Carriers. Airlines such as easyJet are supposedly looking at changing the passenger experience. These airlines are usually bare bones, lacking both Wi-Fi and in-flight entertainment systems, but with increased competition, the airlines need to win customers. In-flight entertainment systems are changing, however. While most people will have the image of seatback screen in their head, that might not be the option easyJet opts for. Instead, the airline may join one of the many others adopting wireless streaming to passenger devices. 23% of commercial aircraft in West Europe are already utilising the technology, with it set to rise to 31% by 2023. Juniper foresees that the greater cost efficiency of these systems, compared with seatback systems, will enable the increased Low Cost Carrier deployment. Offering entertainment services in the budget segment removes a crucial differentiator for more traditional airlines, meaning that these airlines need to innovate in order to maintain success. Juniper recommended that one area in which they can do this is to offer free, high quality passenger Wi-Fi. With connectivity becoming a standard aircraft feature, Juniper predicted that the number of connected aircraft will grow by 118% between 2018 and 2023, with over 34,000 commercial and business aircraft outfitted by 2023. Improved aircraft connectivity will be leveraged to gain service efficiency owing to predictive, more efficient maintenance, with IoT sensors utilised to reduce manual maintenance tasks and improve aircraft safety; allowing improved margins for airlines. BBC confirms 2018 World Cup will be streamed in 4K HDR, VR
Fans will also be able to watch using VR as BBC Sport trials the cuttingedge technology
The BBC has confirmed that it will be making several World Cup matches available in 4K HDR, with the games set to be streamed live on BBC iPlayer. While this is not the first time the BBC has made 4K content available, it represents the first time the broadcaster has showcased a major sporting event in the format. Despite making a select few matches available in 4K HDR, the BBC has confirmed that there will be a limited number of people allowed to watch them. In fact, those wishing to watch the match in the higher quality will have to hop onto iPlayer early, as entry to the stream will be available on a first-come first-served basis. It’s unlikely that the BBC will be the only broadcaster to showcase matches in 4K, however. If it’s simply the bump in resolution that’s of interest, then both Sky and BT have a history of showcasing live sport in 4K. BT began broadcasting in the resolution back in 2015, while Sky began in 2016. Sky has yet to confirm whether its World Cup matches will be in 4K, but its German subsidiary will, so it’s likely that the broadcaster will do the same in the UK. Unlike its competitors, the BBC won’t be limiting its streams to just 4K. That’s because the broadcaster has announced that it will be showcasing the content in a higher frame rate than the typical 25fps. In fact, the BBC’s 4K matches will be showcased in a smooth 50fps, which should give users greater immersion. Throw HDR into the mix, which promises more detailed colours and brighter imagery, then this could be the best way to watch 2018’s World Cup. As expected, the BBC will be utilising its hybrid-log gamma (HLG) technology, which was an HDR format specifically designed for broadcast television. While all 29 of BBC One’s World Cup matches are scheduled to be made available in 4K HDR, those who manage to nab one of the coveted spaces will have to have a pretty robust broadband service. That’s because the BBC is recommending an internet speed of 40Mbps, which is just enough for the UK’s average household, according to the most recent statistics from Ofcom. Those with a 40Mbps+ internet speed may also try out the BBC’s other trial during the 2018 World Cup, which will be all to do with virtual reality. 33 matches will be available via a dedicated app, allowing users to wearw headsets and watch the beautiful game. It will be available on both iOS and Android smartphones, as well as on the Gear VR, Oculus Go and Playstation VR. Unfortunately, those with an HTC Vive or Oculus Rift, will likely be left without. In VR, users will be able to choose their viewpoint of the game, with it offering a view from a luxury private box or from behind either of the two goals.

Essential Install | Pulse Cinemas
High-quality window treatments for all over the home, as well as the cinema and media room, are now available from Pulse Cinemas
Get the full treatment!
In a new initiative, Pulse Cinemas is offering a full window treatment service, enabling its install partners to confidently specify and deliver fully automated shading and curtains for a huge range of projects. Able to source, supply and fit some of the biggest makers in the business, Pulse Cinemas is now offering installers the chance to exploit the growing trend for window treatments, even if they have little or no experience in the area. Covering residential or commercial settings, the new service delivers the opportunity to add a considerable boost to the bottom line of each project. The synergies between what an AV and automation installer offers and the approach used when specifying window treatments is clear, a bespoke set of products tailored to the tastes and needs of each customer, however until relatively recently, the specification of these products tended to be the preserve of the architect or interior designers. What has shifted in recent years is that with customers increasingly seeking automation, the design community’s ability to deliver a reliable solution has been outstripped by automation specialists who can ensure the treatments will work with the rest of the systems fitted to the house and is reliable. Pulse will be offering every conceivable type of window treatment available from curtains, roman, roller and venetian blinds, to full black-out treatments and blinds which can filter and control ambient light. The company can create treatments that make a design statement or ones that are hidden until needed. Mike Beatty, Pulse Cinemas MD, explains, “We are always looking to find ways of helping our install partners deliver a more comprehensive service and offering the chance to deliver in the growing area of window treatments is another opportunity for us and our partners to do just that. “If you have been reluctant to include window treatment in your quotes because you were not sure you could deliver to the same the standard as the rest of the project, you can now work directly with us and we will manage that aspect of the work for you.” All installers need to do to get started is provide technical specs for a project, drawings, room plans etc, and Pulse can then provide a complete service of drawing up the proposal and quote, making a site visit if needed. Then when it comes to fitting the products, that can be taken care of via Pulse too, all the installer has to do is wire for the products and then
programme them into the rest of the automation system at the end. If installers are more confident in this area, then Pulse can just provide the quote and the products, and the installers can fit themselves. The plan is to provide a sliding scale of exactly the amount of support each installer needs.
Added value
Pulse underlines that this new relationship will deliver other benefits as well. The Pulse team is highly experienced in dealing with the world of interior designers and architects. Speaking the same language, Pulse is very confident the company can facilitate better communication between the technical needs of the installer and the design goals of the interior designer. Pulse argues having a partner that can speak knowledgeably about different types of fabrics and different styles with the client, builds confidence to help win the work in the first place, and reassures the interior designer that they can still achieve any style they need to, but the technical aspects will perform also. Mike says, “This way everyone wins, the client gets the look and the performance they want and each trade is able to deliver to a higher degree of customer satisfaction.” Added value is something that lots of distributors aim for with each service and product they offer. Just shifting boxes has not been enough in the install sector in truth for years, so Pulse is aiming to deliver more of that here. Yes, installers can source and deliver high-quality window treatments through this relationship, but also it’s the bridge between the installer and the design community that Pulse is proposing to build here that is also of value, allowing installers to become ‘instant experts’ helping to win the project and then be sure of delivering a highly professional result and a higher profit level. Window treatments can be seen in abundance at Pulse HQ in Stansted already adorning the reception areas as well as in the brand-new media room, this new aspect of the Pulse offering will also be seen at the many events and shows hosted by the company. Make your voice heard
Origin Acoustics’ Dave Donald talks to EI about the rise in voice control, its longevity in our industry, and how the company’s Valet amplifiers are filling an uncharted gap in the marketplace. Tell us about Valet amplifiers and the rise of voice control.
Valet does not have a direct competitor. We found a hole in the market we could fill with a product that complements the Amazon Echo Dot while allowing our dealers to create a voice controlled multi-zone, multisource music distribution system that is both simple to design and simple to operate. All this while allowing them to make a profit in the process. Valet is an eight-channel, four zone amplifier with 50W per channel. An RJ45 connector in each zone allows a CAT5/6 cable to deliver power to the Dot in the remote room and return audio from the Dot’s 3.5mm jack back to the amplifier on a balanced line. Speakers in the remote room are connected via standard speaker cable completing the system. Someone simply needs to address Alexa in the remote room and request a song, artist or playlist and Valet amplifies the Dot’s output and plays it back through the speakers in that room. This includes music as well as Alexa’s voice responses. The Dot itself can be mounted behind one of our speaker grilles by using our tool-less mounting system. This creates an effect like Tony Stark from Iron Man interfacing with his computer Jarvis. Walk into the room with no visible product, say a command and off you go.
What systems can the voice commands control via the amps?
Valet will play any music source the Dot can produce via voice control or by using the Alexa app. There are also independent, analogue, zone inputs for a single, additional, external source per zone. The Valet will also allow Alexa to control any of the subsystems found native in the Dot’s ecosystem. This includes but is certainly not limited to; the Nest thermostat,
Lutron lighting, the Ring doorbell, Honeywell alarm systems and countless other products that are coming online daily. In each instance, the Dot acts as the microphone and the speakers in the room are the output for Alexa’s responses. There is also a 12V trigger in each zone of the amplifier that can be integrated with any number of home automation platforms. A simple driver allows Valet to trigger a command whenever the Dot is active.
Can the voice control be used for a whole home audio system? What do you hope to improve in future upgrades?
Yes, this was the primary purpose for the development of Valet; simple yet powerful, voice controlled music distribution. Multiple Valets can be stacked to scale the system to virtually any size. Individual line level outputs can also drive subwoofers or external amplification depending on the demands of the system design. We will be following the Echo development path and support any advances the system provides.
Do you think voice control is a fad or an emerging essential technology for our industry?
Now that voice control has developed into a reliable input method, the sky is the limit. One of the amazing features of the Dot is the incredible microphone array that can pick up, understand and process commands from a surprising distance. This combined with the ever-advancing AI makes interfacing with the system an entertaining and enjoyable experience. In my humble opinion, voice control has just begun to scratch the surface of its potential abilities. It’s here to stay. Invision 01359 270 280, invisionuk.com

SMART SWITCHING. MEETINGS MAXIMIZED. WyreStorm’s new 3x1 HDMI/VGA/DisplayPort smart switching extender with scaling receiver and relay triggering makes short work of any meeting and huddle environment. With demand for cost-efficient presentation solutions for meeting and huddle spaces on the rise, the WyreStorm EX-SW-0301-H2 is one smart switching HDBaseT extender that lets everyone get connected, get more out of meetings, and get rid of the expense and complexity of a control system. Offering manual and automatic switching between any of its connected HDMI, VGA with audio and DisplayPort inputs, the EX-SW-0301-H2 supports transmissions of the latest 4K content to 35m or HD to 60m; automatically scaling to display or projector capabilities. Dual conditions-based relay triggering enable CEC, RS-232, IR and IP (TELNET) control to engagement based on transmitter auto-switching, as well as projector screens, curtains and blinds activation to create the ideal meeting environment in seconds. With ease of user operation and valued-added functionality equally important, users can simply connect their devices to turn the system on and disconnect to switch off, or revert to the additional local HDMI input on the receiver to show digital signage. The result is maximized participant productivity during meetings and maximized return on client investment when outside them. Now, that’s smart.

WyreStorm’s multi-platform AV distribution arsenal might offer more install options, but which should be an integrator’s weapon of choice for their application? WyreStorm’s Christian Thomas zeros in on the company’s HDBaseT, Fibre and AVoIP technologies to make sure you know how to best equip yourself for your AV mission.
H2XC Series: Modular 4K/60 4:4:4 and HDR over HDBaseT and fibre Despite industry statements proclaiming “the death of the HDBaseT matrix”, the platform is very much alive and kicking and still the easiest way to distribute high bandwidth uncompressed 4K HDR content over distance within medium-to-large footprint residential and commercial installations. With its support for video, multichannel audio, RS-232 and bidirectional IR control, power and Ethernet over a dedicated network up to 70m (4K) and 100m (1080p), HDBaseT remains ideal for centralized distribution and basic switching/routing of up to 16 sources to 16 displays. However, challenges will present themselves if scaling to deployments over 16x16. With a huge variety of WyreStorm matrix switcher and extender solutions available, we’ve given the modular treatment to our top of the line H2X Series 4K HDR and integrated audio DSP matrix switchers with the new H2XC Series featuring customizable multiformat, multi-platform transmission cards supporting up to 4K/60 4:4:4 and HDR over both copper and fibre. Available in 10x10 or 16x16 chassis, the H2XC can be populated with any combination of five transmission cards to give the integrator the freedom to perfectly tailor an install to the application.
Transmission cards include HDMI In/Mirrored HDMI Out and HDBaseT Out with S/PDIF Audio In, S/PDIF and Analog Stereo Audio Out, and IR to zone to 70m or 1080p to 140m using its long cable mode setting. An HDBaseT Input/Output card swaps the HDMI input for a Class A HDBaseT Input to support decentralized source connection, while an audio expansion card featuring HDMI In/mirrored Out alongside S/PDIF Audio In, S/PDIF and Analog Stereo Audio Out, enables the integrator to skew the number of audio inputs and outputs based on the requirements of their project. Lastly two variable compression cards support 18Gbps transmissions of 4K/60 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 HDR-12 bit over HDBaseT to 70m or multimode fiber up to 300m - perfect for applications requiring transmission over vast distance without sacrificing quality. The result is a single flexible and fully customizable matrix solution that replaces what would have been several solutions before. Currently the H2XC is only multi-I/O audio visual matrix device available capable of delivering full-bandwidth 18Gbps HDMI content over both copper and optical transmission mediums whilst handling up to 48 discrete audio source devices to 16 DSP-managed audio zones.

Trust your HDMI systems with Murideo
Murideo’s innovatively designed ‘Fox & Hound’ HDMI troubleshooting kit enables integrators to confirm correct bandwidth, HDCP, resolution, timing, HDR metadata and many more options that could cause system hiccups if not treated correctly.
OneAV enthuses that the kit prevents hardware hiccups
Equipped to generate and analyse 18Gbps HDMI 2.0 distribution, the handheld testers are a highly useful tool for today’s home technology professionals, installing the new wave of 4K60 (4:4:4) sources coming into the market. The installer can test and check all devices before heading out to site, saving time and guaranteeing hardware is fully functional before install. Less time spent on site, error checking or returning to replace a dud cable, means a higher margin on a job and end-users have their AV working first time. David Taylor of Automated AV, comments, “The Murideo Fox & Hound Kit has been one of the smartest investments we’ve made for a long time. Since purchasing the kit, HDMI troubleshooting has been a breeze. The product support and purchase process through OneAV made it even easier.” Word is spreading throughout the installer community about Murideo’s variety of handy HDMI test tools - it’s easy to see how the relatively small investment will pay dividends in a short space time. Less return visits and less time spent talking to suppliers, to try and identify issues, means more time available to fit in more jobs. The Fox & Hound can assist on the most basic to the most complex of system issues. Using the generator in place of the source, and the analyser in place of the sink, allows these units to read data being sent throughout the system to easily pinpoint system issues and diminish support calls and the need for replacement products.
Jeff Murray, CEO of AVPro Global Holdings, states, “Murideo has become the name to trust in HDMI testing and troubleshooting equipment. With the success of our Fresco Series, we set out to create a product of the same calibre to fulfil the need for quality testing gear for all integrators. We’ve delivered an HDMI test kit that so affordable, there is no reason it shouldn’t be in every integrator’s truck. The Fox & Hound is a must have for any integrator installing 18Gbps 4K (4:4:4) with HDR capable distribution systems and we couldn’t be more proud to present it to the industry.” Daniel Adams, OneAV technical director, adds, “OneAV prides itself on selecting bespoke brands that support the installer, Murideo is one those, guaranteeing your install runs smoothly without any hardware hiccups.” OneAV 01684 576 348, oneav.co.uk

2018 PRESENTED BY ESSENTIAL INSTALL MAGAZINE
Projector Of The Year
Optoma Europe Ltd UHZ65 laser 4K UHD projector
The award winning Optoma UHZ65 is just one part of IntoAV’s impressive home cinema line up
At £4999.99, IntoAV says Optoma’s UHZ65 laser projector is a very impressive machine and the company is delighted that this was underlined at this year’s Smart Buildings Awards, with the machine, picking up the Projector of the Year gong. The distributor says that laser light source projectors that are good enough for the standard needed for home theatre, have been very expensive in the past and the UHZ65 has caused a sensation at this price point. Having the laser light source is a strong sales point to the customer, no lamp to replace, instant on and off and thousands of hours of use with no drop in light output or picture quality. Adam Rackham, director at IntoAV, adds, “It’s not just that this projector has no lamp, it also produces a great picture. Thanks to the 2K native DLP chip which shines two pixels for every mirror on the chipset, 8.1 million pixels land on the screen. Its detail is as close to true 4K as it can possibly get, its described as 95% the same as a Native 4K chip machine. “The laser light source means the image is punchy, bright and has a depth to it you can only understand when you see it for yourself. We had the projector running at the Bristol Hi-Fi show recently and the demo room was constantly packed, everyone was blown away by the picture.” The UHZ65 also has Optoma’s Pure Motion frame interpellation technology. Reviewers have been very impressed, with T3 giving it a Platinum award. Adam explains, “At the moment we are offering the UHZ65 with a free ceiling bracket and a Neutec Fibre Optic 4K HDMI cable. The importance of this type of high
data transfer cable is becoming very apparent as more 4K sources are being released. As more 4K sources are coming onto the market and 4K displays become mainstream, Into AV underlines that a major problem is becoming apparent. Adam explains, “HDMI cables are the main way of carrying a signal from the AV receiver to the projector and they are not up to the job! Copper conductors in the cable are failing to carry the required bandwidth for 4K HDR above 5m lengths, especially at higher frame rates. “We are getting an increasing amount of technical calls from frustrated installers who are getting a picture on some 4K sources, but not even a signal lock on others. They have fitted a 10m plus ‘4K certified active cable’ and it is the cause of the signal problem. After a great deal of testing we are now offering an affordable solution in the form a Fibre Optic HDMI cable by Nuetec. “The HDMI plugs themselves contain a four-channel receiver/transmitter which works with VCSEL (VerticalCavity Surface-Emitting Laser) array. Being fibre optic, the cables do not suffer from signal attenuation (signal strength loss) making them the most reliable means to transmit the demanding 4K 16bit full colour depth payload.” As the UK distributor of Grandview projector screens, IntoAV says it has made sure the company holds all sizes and models in stock for next day delivery, this includes all of the 4K compatible screens. Adam says, “If you look closely at a projected still image from a 4K projector it is incredible how small each pixel is, and how close the spacing is between each one. This highlights how important the projection surface of the screen is. For this reason, Grandview screens use a material certified by the Imaging Science Foundation for 4K use. “We stock 4K screens in tab tensioned, fixed frame and in-ceiling both with normal and acoustic woven material. All electric models feature built in IR remote, 12volt trigger and RS232 control. We are very confident you will not find a better value screen held more reliably in stock anywhere else.” IntoAV 01438 311 625, intoavdistribution.com

Great audio for the new age of outdoor living Mega-expensive garden kitchens are among a new generation of accessories fuelling a boom in outdoor living expenditure
Armed with discreetly potent new satellites and subs, the Sonance Landscape Series (SLS) and smaller SonArray systems will deliver great sound evenly across any space
A surge in spending is reshaping the look and functionality of garden spaces and you must share in the prize, says Habitech’s Jonathan Pengilley. Up and down the UK, the earth is moving, quite literally. Driven by the agencies of fashion, demographic and social change, a new relish for outdoor living is ripping up leafy swathes in order to transfer home comforts to the garden. And if I’m reading the runes correctly, there’s never been a better time to get the designers with the diggers involved in your plans for integrating great sound with the landscape. This is because the stars are so precisely aligned in favour of audio al fresco. For a start, the baby-boomer generation with all the land and the money share a greater connection with the music of their youth than any other, are more likely to value audio quality, and most crucially, still have the energy to party. When they’re spending upwards of £50,000 on big landscaping projects, they’re sure to say yes to an
outdoor sound system if it means they can have The Byrds singing from the trees whenever nostalgia takes over. And surely they’ll be suckered by the lure of the ‘garden kitchen’: a must-have lifestyle accessory in the chicest of US neighbourhoods and making its way to the UK via retailers like ‘Indian Ocean’ (which also sells eye-wateringly expensive garden furniture - Google ‘Indian Ocean furniture’). At around 2m long its flagship ‘Uber Kitchen’ will set the seduced back over £60K. My point, transparently, is that when folks are blowing this sort of cash on a glorified barbecue (a key 2018 trend according to mags like Ideal Home and Country Living incidentally), they can spare £10k for the social glue of great audio at every soirée.
Home sweet home
It isn’t just fashion that’s driving the diggers. Recent developments in the property and labour markets are pulling big money into an orbit much closer to home. For instance the leap in stamp duty on more expensive piles is fuelling an inclination to stay put, improve and add value. A recent report by Santander insurance estimates that the £5.2 billion sunk into the UK’s gardens in the past 12 months has led to a £22 billion bonanza for the UK property market. The word is spreading: in recent years as many as 17 million Brits have transformed the way they use their outdoor space, with 35% adapting their gardens for greater entertainment and relaxation, and 11% to create

Big spenders are prioritising quality, investing in entertainment, enhancing the appeal and functionality of garden areas ripe for AV installation
Special forces: the new Sonance Extreme in-wall range is equipped with independently certified IP66 and military standard 810G capabilities for the toughest missions
Ultimate outdoor
extra living and storage space. This, in part, must be down to the advent of the ‘shoffice’ (shed + office) – bijou garden accommodation for a rocketing population of home workers (currently 1.5 million according to the Office for National Statistics). And they’re finding wads of cash in their pyjamas, with sales of these chi-chi structures up by 40% and topping out at around £70K for the designer models, complete with central heating, double glazing and all the trimmings.
Go digging for gold
The beautiful new IP66-rated Sonance Mariner systems in three sizes will clamp to virtually any outside structure. Also in black
No surprise then that UK garden spend is predicted to rise by 11.7% between 2017 and 2022, and that according to a Euromonitor survey, consumers are moving towards quality over price. So in practice this means big spenders are prioritising quality, investing in entertainment, enhancing the appeal and functionality of garden areas ripe for AV installation, and multiplying the value of their homes in a win-win outcome. Never mind the perfect storm, this perfect summer scenario should be the best opportunity yet for integrating sound and garden, especially when you can exploit the supremely scalable versatility of the new Sonance outdoor range.
Leading the world’s largest and most demanding outdoor audio market, Sonance systems are supplied with the flexibility to deliver high quality full-range fidelity across spaces ranging from cottage gardens to leisure parks, within budgets of any size from £2K up. Unlike rivals, the brand’s potential is unlimited, scaling easily to accommodate the largest projects through the new Landscape Series (SLS) models, including two new satellites: a 4in (LS4T) and a 6in version (LS6T) with higher output, wider dispersion and 70V, 100V, 8 ohm selectable tap settings, and three new subwoofers: a sizeable 12in in-ground subwoofer, an extraordinary 15in in-ground subwoofer and a 12in hard-scape subwoofer for the largest patios. As effective in smaller spaces and following a similarly iconic sat/sub formfactor, the game-changing SonArray systems can now be expanded from the original 8.1 package in a range of configurations up to 16.2, all driven by a single Sonance SR2-125 amplifier. Not only are they beautifully discreet, Sonance sat/subs are perfect for multi-zone design, and by firing in from the boundaries, will limit the sound-spill to neighbouring areas. For the heavy-duty all-weather roles aboard mega yachts or by the outdoor hot tub, you can integrate the fabulously flush appeal of the new Extreme range, equipped with independently certified IP66 and military standard 810G capabilities (unlike their self-certified rivals) to withstand truly flagrant abuse, extreme humidity, salt spray, temperature and UV challenges from -34°C to +79°C. For on-wall (or practically any structure) choose from seven new IP66-rated Mariner 5in/6in/8in models featuring beautifully sculpted black or white enclosures to complement designer environments, and for the ultimate in undercover sound, deploy the super-stealthy ‘Rocks’ range of rock-like speakers, in looks virtually indistinguishable from the real thing.
New grounds for optimism
A big garden trend this year: the chicest ‘Shoffice’ will set you back £70k!
As the age of outdoor living gathers momentum, your business can mobilise behind a campaign to make high quality sound a permanent feature in the landscape. You’re perfectly placed to pitch your expertise to the fat-cats buying into the blooming garden design industry. And whenever you do, wield the Sonance outdoor line-up with confidence, because, absolutely, there is no garden project beyond its capabilities. Habitech 01256 638 500, habitech.co.uk

Strength in numbers: Updates from Home Tech Gallery
Owen Maddock
Melanie Malcolm
Stuart Burgess
EI spoke to the guys from Home Tech Gallery to find out the latest on this promotional group. Founding members Stuart Burgess, director of Just Add Popcorn, Owen Maddock from ConnectedWorks, and Melanie Malcolm, director of Bespoke Home Cinemas, Yorkshire Ladies Links and the Yorkshire Choice Awards, offered news and updates. Owen: So the big change is that we’re now Home Tech Gallery. Initially we started off with a different name. We checked Twitter, we checked Instagram and Facebook… unfortunately, our original choice was a bit close to someone else’s trademark; so as soon as they pointed that out we had to change it. I prefer the new name, it better reflects what we’re about. Our job is to give members a place to showcase and highlight all the fantastic installation work that goes on. It’s still the case that the general public don’t know our job is a real thing – and they don’t know what can be achieved with a little forward planning and skilful design. By coming together like this, smaller companies – and we’re all small compared to players like Nest or Hive – can make a bigger noise about our abilities. We’re now looking at ways we can pool resources for things like shared marketing. Say if 20 or so of the members combine our efforts, we can advertise nationally and all the enquiries are useful because we’ve covered the whole country.
we receive registrations daily through the HTG website and our trade forum. Our Instagram feed just passed 1,000 followers, that’s one of my areas so I was delighted to achieve that so quickly – and they’re all real with 70% of them from outside the industry so that’s really encouraging.’
Mel: ‘Like any new organisation it took a little time to sign business up because they wanted to know what the Home Tech Gallery was, but now as we approach our 1st birthday
To find out more, and to sign up, visit hometechgallery.com and follow the group on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook @hometechgallery
Stuart: ‘We had a really positive response from our first time exhibiting at EI Live! Both existing members and potential members were really enthused about the platform and had lots of questions and ideas going forward. One member benefit that’s absolutely flying is our trade forum. People love the idea that technologists, manufacturers, suppliers and distributors can all share the same space. Discussing issues, solutions and the continued development in our industry. It has to involve everyone, or you get that ‘keyboard warrior’ thing where everyone’s a bit too brave about the people who aren’t there… there’s a real spirit of community and collaboration in there, which is exactly what we wanted.’

A Kaleidescape system is the perfect partner for this swish living space
One Night In Bangkok!
EI speaks to Pip Evans, director of NV Integration, about this very special project that combines entertainment with the latest and greatest in automation. The challenge was to provide a home packed full of entertainment at this luxurious Bangkok party house. One of the things that immediately hits home about this property is the sheer size (3,000sqm) and level of bespoke automation that was needed to fulfil the brief. The team chose Crestron as the platform built around a CP3 smart home processor. So how did this London based installer land a job on the other side of the planet? Pip explains, “The client is called Anurit Kerdsinchai who is a successful industrialist and philanthropist. He is a real anglophile and was in London on the Kings Road buying a kitchen. He asked the kitchen supplier if he knew anyone in our sector and was referred our way, ten munities later he was in our showroom saying he was in the market for a home automation system. “At first, we thought some sort of consultancy role would be likely because of the distance involved, but as soon as we saw the plans and what Anurit wanted, I knew we had to be involved.” Pip adds, “Brief wise, he was very clear, ‘this is a party house, I plan to do lots of entertaining here’. He has a huge interest in the UK and in particular London, so this is reflected in the house even down to having UK spec three pin plugs. He says it’s not just a style thing, lots of his purchases are from Harrods, so it makes sense on a practical level too.” The ‘Siam Super Smart House’, is situated to the east of the city centre and is spread over 3,000sqm including five bedrooms, a living room, a dining room, wine cellar and a home theatre. Not compromising the style of the interior was important so in the living room, dining room and master bedroom integrated TVs hide behind moving panels supplied by Future Automation.
The home hints at the traditional styles, whilst embracing the modern, the owner is also a big fan of all things British

The system had to integrate subtly into a home that was born to party
The home cinema is a big hit and includes one of the owner’s ‘must have’ brands, Meridian
As well as using a Crestron CP3 processor to manage and integrate, NV Integration also specified Crestron’s multi-room music system Sonnex Audio connected with Tidal and Spotify. Pip is a fan, “Sonnex is good, you get the performance you want and the native compatibility with Crestron is a big bonus. I always say what is the point of putting a Porsche gearbox in a Mercedes engine in a BMW car.” A Crestron DigitalMedia (DM) 4K 16x16 switcher centralises and distributes the video content and DM also helped overcome several potential challenges, including the length of cable runs and incongruent video signals, providing the switching and HD signal distribution. Bespoke interfaces are a big part of what makes the project special controlling the AV, lighting, security and AV via Crestron TSW-752 and TSW-1052 wall-mounted touch screens. TSR-302 touchscreen remotes in two of the bedrooms complete the control package.
Party on
For the owner to have their desired party experience at the touch of a button, a variety of pre-programmed scenes can be selected on the bespoke interface. When the owner selects the much-used ‘whole house-party mode’, custom features automatically activate external lighting scenes, turn the carp pond fountains on, select a ‘discover weekly’ playlist on Spotify for the garden and ground floor speakers, adjusts blinds and curtains and turns on the internal party lighting. Pip and the team are particularly pleased with the integration and bespoke control between the Crestron interface and the wine cellar. Anurit can keep track of his whole collection of wines, keep stock controlled and get loads of information on what is being drunk, all from the bespoke GUI. The system also provides floor-plan layouts of each floor with feedback as to room status and what systems are running. As entertainment is such a big factor on the house, it’s no surprise that Kaleidescape is delivered to four zones, security is also important to the client so 16 CCTV cameras keep an eye on what is going on. Bowers and Wilkins speakers are the weapons of choice to deliver the Sonnex system and there are also Artcoustic customised soundbars under some of the TVs. There are also two zones of Sonance’s exterior solution Sonarray in the grounds, which Pip says sound awesome, a welcome opportunity as much of the company’s work is in London where exterior spaces are in scarce supply. The team is also keen on the calibration available here as the amplification can be told exactly which speakers are being driven. Rounding out the AV, there are a few Sonos Playbars undersome of the TVs just for a boost to the TV audio. The cinema aspect of the project we know well here at EI as it won the Best Cinema Project gong at the Smart Building Awards in 2017. Meridian DSP Special Edition speakers deliver the provide the 9.4 audio set up, Fortress home theatre seats with D-Box are included, as is JVC projection, a 3.3 metre cinemascope Screen Research screen and a Kaleidescape Premier Line server delivering content.

Meeting the challenge One of the main challenges of course was the distance and the traveling. Pip explains, “Shipping all of the equipment was relatively straight-forward, however it did involve long periods away from home for a lot of the team. The longest stay for one team member was four months, personally I made 16 trips in 18 months, all the traveling and jet lag does take a toll. “The other aspect is the heat, it is very hot there, but this became less of an issue as the property developed and the AC and window treatments began to work.” Pip adds, “There were other issues such as a cisco switch going down just before the project was about to be handed over, so we needed to move fast to fix that.” However, Anurit is so pleased with his party pad, that NV is also doing a significant commercial office project also in Bangkok for him which also includes a penthouse mirroring quite a few of the systems in the main house. Working out
As companies continue to encourage remote access and flexible office hours, more employees are working from home, offering a unique opportunity for high quality AV conferencing calls. Here, Bobby Beckmann, CTO of Lifesize, an integrated cloud and HD video conferencing company, outlines the trends that will have a big impact on conferencing, collaboration and the way we communicate. 1. 4K resolution The conference room will become an even more critical part of conducting successful meetings with the help of highly sophisticated 4K cameras that showcase some of the best resolution the industry has seen. This technology has grown significantly in the home environment as seen in TVs and PCs, but as more millennials enter the workforce, the demand for high-quality video resolution in the office will grow exponentially.
trends (e.g. virtual assistants, facial recognition) are, in effect, powered by AI. At a basic level, AI could enable us to determine optimal meeting length, ideal number of participants, or best time of the day to hold a meeting to improve productivity. Voice recognition could analyse the content of meetings, compare against other meetings in the same organisation, and make suggestions as to connections between people with complementary skills or knowledge.
2. Machine vision
4. Interoperability
With innovation driving installation of smarter cameras in the workplace, these ‘eyes in the office’ will also gather important data to help give context to how a meeting is proceeding – much like sentiment analysis used for customer service calls. Typically, there is only one camera in a conference room and it doesn’t give a good indication of how the room truly looks or feels. For larger meetings, multiple cameras will utilize machine vision to help check the mood of the room: Are people engaged? Is there free-flowing conversation? Is someone sleeping? What is on the whiteboard? And then of course provide useful data to change meetings for the better.
3. Artificial intelligence, machine learning
Cloud-based video conferencing solutions give us access to huge amounts of data about meeting habits. This data, aided by artificial intelligence and machine learning, could allow us to optimise the use of the platform and increase the effectiveness of meetings – many of the other
While not as sexy of a trend as 4K resolution or machine vision, innovation around interoperability will be (as it has always been) paramount as users continue to demand a consumer-like experience with enterprise collaboration: whatever device, wherever they are, at any time. Applications and devices will need to play nicely with one another. Because of this trend, we will see additional consolidation and partnerships in the industry, as both big and small players try to build out an all-in-one solution that meets the demands of today’s modern worker. “Technology advancements ebb and flow within different industries, but I believe that with emerging technologies like AI, 4K and machine learning, the collaboration space will be transformed in the next couple years. Smart meetings will make the collaboration experience more engaging for users and provide IT professionals the advancements in business intelligence and data analytics to make their role across the company even more strategic,” says Bobby. The all-electric van from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles launched this year
On the road
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the light commercial vehicle (LCV) market remained steady in May, rising 2.4%, as 27,639 new vans hit British roads. This, combined with the 3.4% growth in new car demand in May, and hybrids and plug-ins making up nearly 6% of the marketplace, got EI out on the road to find out more. Van drivers on their way to urgent jobs could be allowed to use bus and taxi lanes under new proposals aimed at helping Britain’s army of tradesmen and women. Vehicle supplier LeaseVan.co.uk has called on the Transport Secretary Chris Grayling to introduce new rules to assist van drivers. The proposed new rules include giving way to vans at junctions and pulling over to let vans overtake more easily. The proposals could even lead to the introduction of special ‘van lanes’ where van drivers will be able to share bus lanes to bypass rush hour car jams. LeaseVan.co.uk say van drivers should be given priority on our roads as they are often on their way to a job and therefore delays impact the UK economy. The company, which supplies thousands of vans to tradesmen and women every year, says the new
measures will help Britain’s economy to run more smoothly by limiting traffic jams and delays to car drivers only. In a letter to Grayling, a spokesman for LeaseVan.co.uk says, “Britain’s army of van drivers are the life blood of the UK economy. Yet these essential professions are penalised every day by having to share roads with leisure drivers, commuters and parents on school runs. Buses and taxis have priority lanes so why not van drivers too?” He says, “Let’s give our van drivers the respect they deserve by introducing measures which give them right of way, which take them out of the jams and lets them get on with the job. At this time of Brexit uncertainty, it would send a clear message that Britain is open for business and even the van drivers are fully supported.”

Driverless developments
Driverless cares are on the rise, but is the UK workforce ready?
In April, the DRIVEN consortium demonstrated publicly for the first time the capabilities of its fleet of autonomous vehicles to interact and ‘talk’ to each other. From its headquarters at the RACE Building at the Culham Science Centre in Abingdon, DRIVEN set two of its vehicles, a white and blue 2014 Ford Fusion Titanium hybrid and a 2017 Ford Mondeo hybrid on the roads to show the latest milestone in the project. Using their array of lidar sensors, on-board computers, and cameras, as well as Oxbotica’s Selenium autonomy and Caesium fleet tracking software, the cars were able to navigate the site autonomously, encountering pedestrians, cyclists and other traffic. Other consortium members Telefonica and Nominet, were on-hand to explain how the DRIVEN consortium is managing the security of this data to protect drivers and other vehicles from cyber security threats. Speaking on the significance of the occasion, DRIVEN project director and Oxbotica CEO Dr Graeme Smith says, “This is a significant landmark in the development of vehicle autonomy, which has always been about more than simply self-driving. This public trial demonstrates that our technology is able to share data and information that vehicles are then able to use to plot more effective routes, avoid potential hazards, and anticipate driving conditions. This will have huge implications on the way autonomous vehicles will operate and how the future of road travel in the UK looks, improving safety, efficiency and productivity.” Also commenting, Prof. Paul Newman, co-founder of Oxbotica and Director of the Oxford Robotics Institute says, “This demonstration shows once again that the UK is
at the forefront of the next generation of travel. We hope and expect that the technology that DRIVEN is developing will be adopted by vehicle manufacturers all over the world. Our work on display here today could revolutionise people’s lives, and the UK will get to share in an industry that could be worth billions in the years ahead.” DRIVEN, which is in receipt of an £8.6 million government grant designed to stimulate the development of new technologies, is an ambitious project that will see a fleet of Level 4 autonomous vehicles being deployed in urban areas and on motorways, culminating in multiple end-to-end journeys between London and Oxford in 2019. By operating at Level 4 autonomy a vehicle has the capability of driving itself most of the time without any human input.
Electric love
The all-electric van from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, the eCrafter, made its UK debut at the Commercial Vehicle Show at the NEC in Birmingham this April. The first test vehicles were handed over to a group of major European customers at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ headquarters in Hannover last December. By allowing the vehicle to undergo tests with selected fleet operators, the company could incorporate findings and feedback into the final design and production version of the zero-emission van. The eCrafter’s lithium-ion battery is completely integrated into the underbody, meaning the standard vehicle’s entire cargo volume is fully usable. A maximum payload of between 1.0 and 1.75 tonnes is available. A CCS charging station can charge the battery to 80% in just 45 minutes. From a wallbox, charging time to 100% is around 5.5 hours.

Mr. Electric says to take action on EV funding before Brexit
The eCrafter will be available in September 2018, once it has been extensively tested by customers in practice and made fully ready for the market. Commenting on the vehicle trials, director of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Carl zu Dohna says, “I’m really pleased we could show the eCrafter at the CV Show and look forward to talking to customers about their future fleet requirements. Our promise to work with all customers and provide them with bespoke mobility solutions to keep them and their businesses moving is at the heart of everything we do. Having the right vehicles, including alternatively fuelled vans, is essential and we are sure the eCrafter will play an important part in our future model strategy.”
Electric before Brexit
Businesses need to take action now and apply for electric vehicle (EV) funding before Brexit comes into force, urges Mr. Electric, which provides a simple and cost-effective way of installing EV charging points in the workplace, and Low Carbon Workspaces, which offers grants to purchase new and used EVs. Mr. Electric is an authorised installer from the Government’s Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV), and is helping commercial customers to apply for the Workplace Charging Scheme grants towards the upfront cost of the purchase and installation of EV charge points. This offers up to £300 per socket (up to a maximum of 20 sockets) for business properties. An additional grant of up to £5,000 is now also available for small and medium-sized businesses in the Black Country to help deliver or pay for the installation of electric and plug-in hybrid electric fleet vehicles. Low Carbon Workspaces, a funded project by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and provided by Ngage Solutions, is working in
collaboration with Mr. Electric to urge businesses to take up these grants so they can not only improve their energy resources, but also reduce their fuel costs and save money and the environment. Jeff Longley, director of Mr Electric Birmingham North, explains, “The switch to electric vehicles is vital if the UK is to succeed in its aim to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2040. An automotive revolution is happening across the UK, led by a huge increase in popularity for electric vehicles (EVs) – the number of EVs on our roads has risen 20-fold over the past three years alone. By 2050, it’s predicted they will account for twothirds of all vehicles on the road. We also have a corporate social responsibility towards the environment, and as we move into the future, we fully support the growing demand for sustainable green transport technology and aim to be at the forefront of this sector.”
Plug and play
ABB has launched the new AC wallbox portfolio, comprising of 52 different types of high quality, costeffective electric car charging points for private and business use. Easy to fit and with a compact design of 50x25sqcm, the wallbox can be installed at homes or offices and are great for overnight charging. Frank Mühlon, head of ABB’s global business for electric vehicle charging, says, “With the continued growth in sales of hybrid and battery-powered electric cars, businesses and drivers are looking for simple and cost-effective vehicle charging solutions and charging should not be an interruption to the day.” Manufactured with a robust all-weather enclosure for indoor and outdoor use, wallboxes are available in different versions, offering 4.6 and 11 kW AC charging as well as 22 kW AC 3-phase charging.”

Safe and sound
Theft of tools from vans is becoming an alarmingly widespread issue. Responding to this problem, ECIC, a specialist insurer for the contracting sector, is urging contractors to use every tool in the box to defy the thieves and keep their business on track. Ian Hollingworth, head of claims at ECIC, says, “Despite the investment being made in various forms of van security, thieves are blatantly targeting contractors and tradespeople. This is often in broad daylight in the middle of busy streets. Peel and steal is becoming a very common method of access to a van, whereby the thieves are able to open side doors like a can of sardines. This method of entry along with jamming devices are leaving many contractors defenceless. It is vital that contractors do take all reasonable measures to protect equipment in the van. Removing tools overnight is obvious but consideration should be given to installing door alarms or internal lockable metal containers to store important or high value equipment.”
infrastructure, monitoring and more. Our goal is to present our products in a way that is more tactile and centralised, with a wow-factor arrangement that is conducive to training and demonstrations.” Tom Jennings, president of Accelerated Media Technologies, notes an escalating number of companies like MultiDyne are looking to mobile marketing vans as a more efficient means of presenting their products and demonstrations to customers. “This has become a very exciting approach to tradeshow exhibitions for companies seeking to make a stronger impression in a more compact space,” says Tom. “It’s a very efficient way to showcase new products: the exhibitor rolls in, everything is already setup, and rolls away with minimal time wasted. Those benefits extend to training initiatives where the company can go to the customers instead of forcing them to come to a central facility. This particular van was fully optimised to demonstrate MultiDyne’s products, with a particularly generous amount of rack space to accommodate as many of their systems as possible.”

Fibre transport supplier MultiDyne has taken delivery of a mobile marketing van built by Accelerated Media Technologies which will double as an exhibition showcase for MultiDyne products at North American tradeshows, and as a mobile showroom for MultiDyne road shows and training initiatives. The interior of the 22ft vehicle includes luxurious leather bench seating and leather front seats, with adequate heat and air conditioning to ensure comfort and protect equipment. The Accelerated team installed and engineered all equipment racks, cabling, signal routing and power conditioning equipment to support the entire MultiDyne product line as it exists today, including its range of field fibre solutions, fibre camera backs and bulk fibre transport systems. Two 50in 4K monitors are mounted on the walls for monitoring purposes, with additional monitors mounted on the back doors so those outside the truck can join live demonstrations. “This is a floating MultiDyne factory that mimics a working mobile environment, and offers a familiar studio feel that for facility engineers and operators,” says Frank. “Once inside, visitors will have access to hands-on demonstrations that cross camera transport,
The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) was implemented to help improve air quality, and will be in place in central London from April 8 2019. Most vehicles including cars and vans will need to meet new, tighter exhaust emission standards or pay a daily charge to travel within the area of the ULEZ. On top of that, Mayor Khan has just announced that additional rules coming into force in 2021 will increase the size of the ULEZ by 18% to encompass the North and South Circular roads. So how does that affect the AV industry? Andrew Fox, business development director at Planet Leasing, comments, “I know that most company representatives who ordinarily use cars will utilise public transport when visiting London clients, but it isn’t always practical, especially if you are a support engineer or you need to demonstrate equipment. And what about installing systems? You need to get your clients equipment to site and it isn’t always advisable to get stuff couriered. A 54U 19in rack laden with equipment and with cables dressed to perfection won’t be treated with the care required so you need a van. “Making the right choice for a new vehicle is hard enough without having to take the ULEZ into consideration. You need to take the advice of an unbiased professional who is familiar with all makes, models and fuel types available and ideally someone familiar with the AV industry. In addition to the image you wish to portray to your clients (and dare I say competitors) and ensuring the vehicle is fit for purpose, you need to think about how many times a month you are likely to travel into the zone, and what you need to carry.”

Sign of the times
When it comes to commercial and retail spaces, digital signage is king, and the brighter the better. EI investigates the rise of digital signage, looking closely to see how AV can communicate retail and commercial messages in a memorable way. Optoma has expanded its visual display range with the addition of three new LED display panels, THD1560, THD3125 and THD3910, with a respective pixel pitch of 1.5mm, 3.1mm and 3.9mm, they can be configured to create a custom size LED display. The new fine pitch LED panel is also available as a large format ‘out-of-thebox’ indoor display solution either in 4K UHD or full HD display – UHD156338 (271in diagonal) and FHD153169 (136in diagonal). Optoma first announced its range of high brightness, high resolution indoor 4K UHD, full HD and custom LED displays and scaler-switchers at ISE 2018 earlier this year and the range of these ultra thin displays can blend into many retail, digital signage, corporate, higher education, leisure or hospitality environments. The maker says they are easy to install, operate and maintain, and are designed to be reliable. Thierry Millet, managing director of Optoma EMEA, says, “Since ISE 2018, Optoma’s focus has been on the new LED display business. We have listened to feedback from both our existing and new customers to help provide a clear path for future growth and product development.
The expansion is a great opportunity to bring together Optoma’s strengths and resources in European-wide technical support, customer service and repair, and local stock so we can continue to build world-leading visual display solutions that customers can rely on.” The LED displays can be mounted directly onto a suitable wall without a mounting frame, which combined with front access gives fast, low-cost installation and easy maintenance. Designed, supplied and supported as a single solution, Optoma large format LED displays include everything from cables to preconfigured processors, ensuring a hassle free set-up. Optoma’s LED scaler-switchers feature HQUltra 4K image processing to deliver high picture quality and low latency video processing and the inputs can be switched in as little as 0.25 seconds. Techno Snowball is pleased to bring glasses free 3D displays to the UK, from 22in point of sale screens and kiosks all the way up to 65in 4K screens and video walls. No glasses 3D digital signage has already proven to increase brand awareness and product sales by up to 81% year on year in the retail sector, claims the company.

No glasses 3D digital signage increases brand awareness
So, how does it work? With the use of a lenticular lens on each screen and bespoke software, the digital display effectively wears the glasses, so the end user doesn’t have to. By using this technology alongside a combination of 2D background content and animation techniques, any product or graphic appears to be flying out of the screen. A hand can even be placed in front of the screen and that product will appear as if it is literally in one’s palm. Techno Snowball is a leading supplier of autosterioscopic (glasses free) 3D solutions and a trusted supplier of displays, software and network management, providing market ready solutions for POS, DOOH, event and experiential marketing to promote customer engagement. A retail campaign for Southern Comfort at Ralph’s (a major supermarket chain in California), yielded an 81% increase in sales over the same time period of the prior year. The Southern Comfort Campaign also ran for three months in the greater Chicago area. Over 70% of the shoppers in these retail environments elongated their shopping experience because of the company’s glasses-free 3D display. According to an independent media evaluation conducted by Precision Research, the company found that 61% of people watched for over 15 seconds, 19% watched for over 30 seconds and 20% watched for over 60 seconds.
The maker combines this technology with its retail measurement facial detection software that analyses the demographic of the viewers of each advert or trailer. This can then be compared with till data to demonstrate the ROI of advertising on each screen. Based on the demographic engaged with the screen, the screens can play specific content relevant to that demographic viewing at that time. In November 2017, Techno Snowball won the award for ‘The Most Innovative use of Digital Technology’ at the Digital Entrepreneur Awards for this most novel of tech. 4K has proven useful in areas like interactive kiosks and menu boards where smaller font sizes would pixelate at lower resolution while the increased manufacturing volumes has seen screen prices drop by around 20% to 30% in the last 12 months. Exterity has responded with its new AvediaPlayer m9405 4K media player as a critical endpoint for a true end-to-end 4K video and signage workflow. Key features include 32GB storage to support media-rich digital signage; fanless design; 4K Ultra HD video quality and cost-effective Power over Ethernet (PoE). The 4K ArtioSign also includes the ability to add live Twitter feeds to signage, automatic conversion of imported videos, and LG 10in small signage display support. To deliver more automation, Exterity has also added Smart Control, a new software app that brings control of all IP video system applications and end points, including non-Exterity devices such as Smart TVs, into one central location. Smart Control enables simple day-to-day management of a mixed device IPTV system and brings the control apps for ArtioSign into one place. Commands include the ability to control individual and groups of devices: turn them on/off, set volume/mute/unmute, change channels, publish signage to groups of screens and more, all with familiar drag-and-drop ease. Savile Row menswear store, Hardy Amies, wanted to bring an element of its online experience in store and turned to Elo (available in the UK from Midwich) to help it deliver an innovative, omnichannel approach. Elo offers many touchscreen solutions, including mPOS self-service, POS systems and interactive signage displays from 10in to 70in and now has 20+ million retail and hospitality installations in 80+ countries. For the store, Elo’s touchscreen solutions offered installation flexibility as it came in various sizes, and was built with a rugged, sleek design and advanced touchscreen capabilities. The company chose the 70in 7001LT Elo touchscreen. Optional integrated Windows or Android computer modules turn the display into an all-in-one without the

need for additional cables or mounting hardware. The 7001LT is Elo’s largest touchscreen display and offers a bright 700nit LED panel, with a high-quality, interactive canvas for attracting and engaging consumers. The maker says the 7001LT provides a high-performance solution that is easy to deploy and maintain in public environments and at only 3.7in thin, provided Hardy Amies with an aesthetically pleasing touch display. Built for touch with only professional-grade hardware and strengthened touchscreen glass to withstand the rigors of public use, the Elo touchscreen can be placed unsupervised in the store without concerns of being damaged. The Elo screen made it easy for Hardy Amies staff to manage and update the content. Made of high quality materials and with a large, brilliant display, the Elo screen reportedly attracted the attention throughout various locations in the store. “We already had a great website and growing online presence, and wanted to bring a part of this in-store,” says Suzanne Foster, ecommerce and digital marketing manager at Hardy Amies. “The Elo touchscreen enabled us to easily display exciting, visual promotions. As a result of using the screen to promote our outerwear campaign, we’ve seen a direct increase in sales of our outerwear range,” she added.
Small to medium-sized enterprises ranging from cafés, hairdressers, beauty salons, garages, small retailers and even office reception areas, are now set to become more vibrant thanks to the introduction of Vivitek’s new NovoDSmini digital signage solution, argues the manufacturer. Vivitek says the line is suited to all SMEs – whatever their line of business – with the NovoDSmini bringing the benefits of affordable, easy-to-use indoor digital signage to small companies who want to liven up their premises by displaying and sharing dynamic content. NovoDSmini has been created to fulfil the market’s need for an entry segment media player featuring network-based, easy-to-use playlist editing software. The NovoDSmini can be connected to any display device with HDMI. Like Vivitek’s existing NovoDS solutions, the NovoDSmini benefits from NovoDS Studio, the playlist editing and device management software. Users do not need any programming skills to create digital signage to capture their customers’ attention in any environment. The NovoDSmini can play content ranging from text, audio, photos, videos, webpages, YouTube, Twitter and weather updates. The 36 pre-arranged templates allow users to easily create information about services or offers. NovoDS Studio software helps to create professionalgrade digital signage. Its multi-page-playlist editing and scheduling flexibility – by hour, day, week or month – means SMEs can use the product to deliver relevant messages over their chosen time-frame, without having to frequently update content manually. For instance, a cafeteria can program the NovoDSmini to display the breakfast options from 6am to 11am. Furthermore, images are displayed in full HD 1080p, NovoDSmini ensures that the content displayed is eye-catching, even in smaller areas. For shop owners with multiple digital signage screens to manage, NovoDSmini also provides a centralised device management function to enable users to control all of the NovoDS devices on the network. This ensures that SMEs are kept productive and focused on their task at hand, rather than spending time on managing digital signage devices. Users can monitor the device or devices’ status easily, and they can update all the devices’ content. Users also have the option to synchronise content over selected devices, to create an attractive effect across multiple signage displays. Commenting on the launch, Holger Graeff, general manager at Vivitek EMEA, says, “Having access to digital signage solutions that deliver competitive advantage shouldn’t just be an option for larger organisations with bigger AV budgets. Being an SME is challenging, and Vivitek believes that smaller businesses should also have access to professional digital signage solutions to make their businesses stand-out from the others. The NovoDSmini has the power to transform how SMEs view and use digital signage solutions, and we’re confident its performance and ease of use will make it popular with SMEs focused on growth.”

Essential Install | Matrixes & Signal Management
Sending the right signals
Matrixes are the brain waves of a great install, smart boxes that get AV signals to where they need to be, in the format they need to be. The technology is ever improving with both hardware and software updates constantly changing the game. So which one sits high above the competition? EI checks in on the latest in signal management. Launched at EI Live! 2018, the neo:X is Pulse-Eight’s newest fixed format video matrix which features 8 HDMI inputs, 8 HDBaseT outputs and 2 HDMI outputs. Moving forward with the latest installation requirements, the neo:X also features a built-in audio matrix. With ARC (audio return channel) the neo:X can handle all audio signals so there is no requirement for additional hardware for processes such as relaying the audio from a smart TV application to stream through separate speakers within the install – neo:X can handle it all.
The neo:X kit includes neo:Ultra Receivers - at only 13mm high they are perfect for a discreet installation. Using DSC (Display stream compression) the Receiver allows perfect HDBaseT video transmission with zero latency or tearing. Implementing the latest technology, the neo:X and the neo:Ultra Receiver support 4K/60, 4:4:4, 8bit or 4K/60 4:2:2, 12bit up to 100 meters. It also supports 1080p up to an impressive 150 meters! As with all Pulse-Eight matrixes, the neo:X supports multiple control methods including CEC, IR, Alexa voice

control and set top box IP control. Having these options allows the installer and the end user to agree on what is best for their requirement including requests such as no sticky IR buds on the TVs or a hatred of multiple remote controls. The neo range is also fully compatible with all major control systems including AMX, Crestron, Control 4, ELAN g!, RTI and URC. All CEC features are exposed in the drivers which allows you to create powerful control experiences and ensure full compatibility with home automation products. The company says that advanced orders are being taken ready for the shipping date in July. The technology is clearly superb, and the after-sale support continues to impress. Martin explains, “By designing and building our products ourselves, in our own 24,000sq ft facility in Poole, Dorset means our support structure is second to none: If a customer calls with a question, they are going to be able to be put through to someone who either physically made the product or one of those who designed it. By speaking to someone involved in the process, there is no waiting 24 hours for a response to an email, we are on hand ready to help. “It’s important that you get video all the time, to help us do that every neo matrix keeps in contact with our cloud management service. You can tell if this is working with the Monitored LED on the front of the matrix. If you get stuck, your installer or yourself can log into our cloud portal and see helpful diagnosis information (if you let them), fix problems remotely or tell you where you may have gone wrong in the installation, and best of all this is free of charge and included with every matrix.”

Smart-e has introduced the first in its new ‘Neptune’ range, the 4K 9:9 ‘Neso’. The Neso is a modular channel distribution unit, built with ease of installation and maintenance in mind. Smart-e says its years of experience designing for and working alongside some of the best installers in the business, has given the company a unique perspective on the installation process, and it believes this new product is perfect for the installation and upkeep of medium to large scale AV projects. Extending high speed video signals is one of those unseen but essential aspects of AV installations, and while individual TX/RX pair devices with separate PSUs can do the job, Smart-e argues a modular unit is ideal for any installer looking to create a compact, reliable and future proofed installation for the client. To accomplish this, the Neso allows for up to nine 4Konnect modules to be housed conveniently in a 19in rack mounting unit, capable of transmitting or receiving up to nine different 4K UHD video signals and then repeating them to over 100m of CAT 6 cable. An integrated internal PSU powers all modules and provides inline power to the external transmitter and receivers, removing the need for external power supplies. Each bay has a universal connection system allowing either a transmit or receive module to be installed. This approach enables the installer to select which combination of input/output modules to suit their individual application. Modules can be added later providing on-site expansion capability, including; 4K-MOD-IO ‘Meteor’, an HDMI input/ output module designed to provide a native 4K HDMI connection, 4K-MOD-TXF ‘Asteroid’, an HDBT transmitter module capable of transmitting UHD resolution video over 100m of CAT 6 cable and the 4K-MOD-RXF ‘Comet’, an HDBaseT receiver module capable of receiving UHD resolution video over 100m of CAT 6 cable. These 4Konnect modules can be mixed and matched to create a versatile solution to any installation requirements. The modular nature of the Neso allows for the mixing of CAT 6 TX and RX modules together with local HDMI pass through, providing an agile and efficient method of designing a flexible, future proofed, reliable and easy to repair installation. Each module position supports full HDMI digital video and embedded audio, with compatibility for HD 720p, 1080p, Ultra HD 2K and 4K resolutions together with pass through support for EDID, HDCP, CEC and control protocols. Each bay also allows for full duplex RS232 and reverse path IR. The 4K-9:9 can be interconnected with any other 4Konnect modular product which allows the designer to configure the install exactly as needed. The 1RU 19in form factor of the 4K-9:9 enables the device to be conveniently mounted within an AV rack, cabinet or credenza, using detachable rack ears. The HDL/Blustream portfolio from Alltrade has become even stronger with a raft of new hardware and software updates. The HDL app, that seamlessly integrates with Blustream’s range of switches and matrices, has undergone a significant revision this year. It now boasts
added features, a more fluid interface and simplified programming with more built-in commands. Lee Harding, Alltrade’s technical director for CI, comments, “The HDL app updates have turned an already competitive control system into a true classleader. The expansive library of built-in commands makes programming simple using drop-down menus to choose function. Simply input the IP address of the device and the app auto-populates with all available commands for that device. You no longer have to import commands from third party sources, saving time and ensuring there are no command conflicts to resolve.” In addition to the built-in command library, recent updates have included shortcut functions for lights, curtain closures and thermostat controls. For AV installs, the app now includes a raft of projector and electric screen commands as well as automatic source selection. “The updated HDL app has proven very popular with our customers,” adds Lee. “Having demonstrated the command auto-populate function at our Trade Counters we have seen many installers swap from the big-name traditional control systems over to HDL. Combined with cutting edge matrices and switchers from Blustream, Alltrade now offers a compelling CI control proposition for any level of installation.” Blustream’s matrix and switcher portfolio at Alltrade has recently expanded with the SC12SP-V2 4K splitter and down-scaler. This unique device allows HD and 4K screens to be used on the same matrix in their native resolution. This HDCP 2.2 complaint device supports full 4K, 60Hz 4:4:4 and passes through all current HDR formats. “The SC12SP-V2 is the perfect solution for the simultaneous delivery of a 4K sources to multiple displays with different resolutions,” says Lee. “By splitting the primary 4K signal and down-scaling the additional HDMI output, the SC12SP-V2 enables integration of the latest 4K HDR displays with legacy 1080p or 720p displays within the same installation.” The full range of Blustream matrices and switchers are available from Alltrade’s seven Trade Counters across the country or by mail order with next day delivery, often by Alltrade’s own fleet and drivers. Free training on Blustream and HDL is available at all seven Trade Counters throughout the year. Check out EI’s Training Dates for more information.

Essential Install | CEDIA
Designing a reliable KNX system In this issue of Essential Install, Mark Warburton, technical director at CEDIA member company, Ivory Egg, discusses how to design a KNX System that is both reliable and stable. For a system that is quickly approaching its 30th birthday, KNX has proven consistently that the original concept and design of the system was ahead of its time given that the underlying structure of a KNX system has barely changed since its inception. That isn’t to say it hasn’t been updated and modernised to suit the ever-changing automation marketplace, but the basic topology and structure of the system remains the same. Before we look at this structure and the benefits it brings to an installation, let’s quickly define what KNX is. KNX is a standardised system and protocol that is used by over 440 manufacturers to ensure their building control products are interoperable. It’s a decentralised system that is commissioned from a single software, and it was designed from the outset for lighting, HVAC, shading, sensing, and monitoring applications in both residential and commercial buildings. Although the systems work over multiple communication mediums, the most common is the wired communication bus. This medium operates over a standardised twisted-pair cable with a single pair sharing both the 29VDC operating voltage and a superimposed AC control signal. As the system has a scalable topology, a KNX installation can be comprised of 58,384 devices. That’s pretty big when you consider that a device usually has multiple channels, such as an 8-channel dimmer or a 24-channel relay. To get to the biggest KNX system with the full number of devices, we need to start with the smallest possible system that is formed of 3 devices: a bus power supply (with integrated choke), a sensor (some form of input device such as a keypad or PIR), and an actuator (an output device such as a relay or dimmer). These devices are connected directly to each other via KNX cable. To commission the system, you would also need a USB or IP interface, but this isn’t required for the system to operate.
Figure 1 KNX Line with 3 additional segments
These first devices form a single line segment which can have a total of 63 devices connected to it. After that, a line repeater can be used to create a new segment that can have another 63 devices. A total of three line segments can be connected to form an overall line with 255 devices. The line repeater has an optical isolator that passes the communication messages but blocks the DC operating voltage. Because of this, a PSU is needed on each line segment. This approach is one of the key reasons why KNX is so reliable, as a failure of one PSU will not impact the other lines in the system. But we still have a long way to go to get to the 58,384 devices mentioned above. The next level to be added is an area which is used to connect 15 lines together. For the connection, a line coupler is used, which works in a similar way to a line repeater (in fact, it’s the same physical devices but running a different application). However, instead of just repeating traffic, it is programmed to only pass traffic that is required elsewhere in the system or is relevant to the line below. This filter table is what allows the KNX system to operate at a relatively slow speed, which massively increases the distances messages can travel, but still allows for so many devices. It ensures the individual lines don’t get overloaded, so all messages from devices are received and actioned on time, every time. Don’t forget to check out July’s issue of EI for part 2!

Serving up a treat
EI checks in with the latest on high-tech and high-quality content delivery systems. The Strato S is the latest offering in the Encore line of players and servers from Kaleidescape. It offers the same high-quality performance and user experience as the existing Strato and Strato C, yet it comes in a smaller form factor (1U) and offers 12TB of storage which is enough to allow for local storage of 200 UHD / HDR movies. Stephen Carr, Pulse Cinemas’ brand ambassador for Kaleidescape had this to say, “The Strato-S (Slim) is the logical next step in the encore range for Kaleidescape. Rackspace is a limiting factor with many installs and can eat up the smaller budgets.
“By reducing the form factor to 1U, upping the storage capacity and still providing the same incredible performance as its siblings, the Strato-S adds even more to the already massive value propositions offered by the user experience, range and quality of content and through being the only truly legal movie server option.” Strato S supports lossless multichannel audio and plays high-dynamic-range movies on TVs and projectors that can process open-standard 10-bit HDMI 2.0a HDR. The Strato S onscreen user interface is displayed in full 4K Ultra HD (UHD) at 60 frames per second, resulting in fluid animation

Plex can play media from many sources and be viewed on smartphones
and a stunning visual impact. The unit’s internal 12TB hard drive can store 180 to 360 movies with a typical mix of 4K UHD, Blu-ray-quality, and DVD-quality titles. Strato S can be used on its own or in a system with other Encore components, playing back from Terra movie servers or from other Kaleidescape Strato or Alto Movie Players with internal storage. Movies start immediately, without trailers or warnings, and users can jump right to their favourite scenes and songs without fast forwarding. Customers most certainly have options when it comes to source devices. But with so many different ways to get content it’s important to separate the ‘Home Cinema Experience’ from the ‘Home Video Experience’ – it seems the market is very concerned with offering the highest resolution and the widest range of content when really, what separates watching a movie in your home and going to the cinema?
Stephen argues, “The answer has many factors, but the main ones in my opinion are immersion and authenticity. Kaleidescape sets itself apart in these areas. You can build a cinema in someone’s home but if they are still navigating DVD menus and seeing home video warnings, manually turning off the lights and watching a 2:35 AR movie on a 16:9 screen with black bars, they are not getting that cinema feeling we all get when we head down to our local commercial theatre. “Kaleidescape protects this authentic, immersive experience ferociously through its user interface and programmable functionality ensuring that from the moment you press play, the lights dim, the curtains open, the masking is set and the movie starts with no warnings, trailers or menus. This functionality is totally unique to two places, commercial cinemas and homes with Kaleidescape.” Stephen concludes, “In my experience, the factors that make Kaleidescape unique are the ones that also elevate the impact that any movie I watch has on me. Movies are made to make us feel a range of emotions and maybe, even shape who we are as people by making us aware of other ways to think, feel or understand. Surely content like that needs the ultimate stage to affect us.”
The tinkerer’s choice
There are a variety of other media server solutions available to installers, with one of the most popular DIY options on the market being Plex. Unlike Kaleidescape’s offering, Plex is a little more involved, with the company simply offering the software and not the hardware. That means installers will need to seek out hardware to run the media server software before being able to set it up.

Essential Install | Media Servers & Content Delivery
Plex made a big push for the custom install market back in 2016, offering installers the option to become a registered installer. The idea was that consumers would pay Plex for the installation service, which would then be forwarded onto an outside contractor. Unfortunately, the company has since discontinued the service, but there’s still nothing stopping installers from opting to install the service the same way consumers would themselves. The advantage of Plex is that users needn’t watch their content in a specific room and off a specific player. Instead, Plex is available everywhere the consumer wants it. Installing a smart TV in a separate media room? You won’t need to add another player onto that, as Plex is already included as an app on most smart TVs. It’s also available on mobile devices – perfect for the customer if they’re often on the road. All that’s needed to access Plex is an account and an internet connection; it’s that simple. That means the service is local to just the hardware in the user’s home, with those installing a big home cinema in the main
home, still giving the customer access to their media library from their holiday home, even if they didn’t want to pay for extra specialised equipment. That media library can also include just about any content the user wants to view or listen to; movies, music, TV shows, podcasts – it’s all supported. To get started with a Plex media server, installers can choose from a variety of devices to act as a player. That can be anything from a PC or Mac, Raspberry Pi, Nvidia Shield TV, or even a NAS. As is often the case, the quality of the hardware does matter when it comes to playback. As the Plex Media Server is able to send content to any device, installers aren’t required to change the user’s content into a particular format. In fact, Plex will transcode the content into a format on-the-fly if the device doesn’t support the native format. That’s why the hardware matters, the better the hardware, the faster the transcoding and the less need for buffering. That being said, even with an Nvidia Shield TV as a server, Plex shouldn’t run into too many hiccups. It’s even capable of playing Dolby Atmos content, although it’s advised to have a beefier server set-up for those wanting to play 4K content.
Audio brain
For those looking for something that does one thing, but does that one thing very well, then Naim Audio’s Mu-so wireless music system could be a good shout. This is the company’s first wireless music system and offers 450W of power through six custom-designed speakers. Wireless music systems are becoming somewhat of a trend in the AV market, and a common thread amongst all of them is support for music streaming services. Naim includes support for TIDAL and Spotify Connect natively, although offers the ability to throw music to it through AirPlay, UPnP streaming, Bluetooth (aptX), iRadio, or through the company’s iOS or Android app. While this device isn’t a server, the Mu-So, and its smaller sibling the Mu-So Qb, offers a way for users to enjoy all their music on one convenient device. All that’s needed for set-up is a connection to a home Wi-Fi network.
Mu-so is Naim Audio’s first wireless music system

Dolby Atmos compatibility has been added to Apple’s TV 4K system
Atmosphere
At this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple announced that Dolby Atmos compatibility will be added to the Apple TV 4K system when the tvOS 12 version of the platform’s software is released.
4K content from the online store for Apple TV has hit some decent numbers, so the roll out makes total sense, and is no massive surprise considering the company’s established relationship with Dolby. Apple has encouraged take up by offering free upgrades to 4K HDR for previously purchased films when Apple TV 4K first launched. It is set to do the same with Dolby Atmos with Apple offering upgrades for free, for all content already purchased that now have a Dolby Atmos option. The platform has also made progress in deals with cable operators. In the US, the platform is now compatible with Charter Communications, one of the country’s biggest, to deliver access to live channels and tens of thousands of on-demand programs via Charter’s Spectrum TV app. In Europe Apple is already working with CANAL+ in France, and Salt in Switzerland. To cope with the level of subscriptions, a new feature called Zero sign-on has been added which will enable users to be automatically signed into their subscription.

Essential Install | Day in the Life: New Wave AV
The company’s Dolby Atmos home cinema demonstration room has proven to be a powerful tool
With Control4 Certified showroom status acquired, New Wave AV is looking forward to reaping the benefits
Crest of a wave
EI took a trip to the Kent countryside to discover an install company in rude health and enjoying the opportunity presented by the new Control4 Certified Showroom programme. EI’s visit coincided on the day the company was preparing to take part in the #C4Yourself promotion event where 140 Certified official Control4 showroom were rolled out globally.
The showroom has seen some improvements since EI’s last visit; reflecting how the company has developed driven by the experience and knowledge of Kevin Whysall (MD) and Angus Murray. Project wise, the company is very busy. Kevin explains, “It’s a real mixed bag at the moment, we are working on some really significant projects, all Control4, often some Lutron too, but our front end is always Control4.” Angus adds some detail, “A large project we are working on locally is an interesting one – it was a competitive quoting process – the client really wanted to explore his options. However, we won out and are delivering six surround sound zones, 24 audio zones, 14 video zones, 250 circuits of lighting and the whole place is having window treatments.” “This area has really grown in recent times,” explains Kevin, “People want the automation side of it which they can’t get from some of the traditional suppliers. Even if they can source an ‘automated’ system, they don’t want to have two control systems, so getting an integrated set up from us is attractive. The interior designer can still have their say with fabrics but leaving the control up to us is delivers a better result.” Angus underlines, “The extra margin can be significant. This particular project is three properties in one. There is

“Dolby Atmos has been a great partner, you don’t have to be an expert to hear the difference. Our demo space shows this all the time, just sit people down and let them enjoy the system and it sells itself.” Kevin adds, “Consistently clients tell us the cinema feels like the best value part of a project, yes they love the modern control they have other their property, but the cinema delivers fun, enjoyment, togetherness for the family and that is a powerful driver for satisfaction.”
Getting Control4 certified
The company’s success in recent years has seen it taking on larger projects as well as delivering a healthy number of mid-sized ones
the main house, a summer house and a pool complex, nearly all the windows are having treatments, probably £60K on this project alone.” But this is not the only impressive project on the books currently. Kevin says, “We have another project close by, which is really impressive. The client is gradually moving back from overseas, and this large property is being built in stages to accommodate certain items that have special requirements. One is a huge pipe organ, eight metres high, which has to be housed in a section which is finished to protect it from dust and moisture, while other parts of the project are still a building site. “This is a long-term project over four/five years which, when finished, will be amazing; it will have three zones of audio on the outside, 30 zones on the inside, three Dolby Atmos media spaces, a dedicated cinema, as well as light control in two acres of the grounds. The owner has a decommissioned Harrier Jump Jet that he wants to house in its own hanger and have lit up at night, it’s going to look incredible.” However, it’s not all top end projects. Angus adds, “As the company has developed, the business model has matured, yes we get the top jobs, but we also have a healthy number of middle priced projects which, because of Control4, we can push through the business with confidence and efficiency.” Kevin agrees, “A few years ago our mid-level projects would have felt big, but now they are more the bread and butter of the company and we can do this not just because of the skill of our team, but because Control4 has never been in a better place than it is now. As well as being keen on how Control4 has developed its core system, the team also enjoy some of the company’s recent purchase including Triad speakers. Kevin admits, “At first we did ask ourselves why? But now having worked with the brand it’s a perfect match for the rest of the line-up and since the Control4 take over, Triad has delivered performance and enhancements and more competitive price points.”
Setting sail with cinema
Cinema is another area the company has seen significant growth in. Kevin explains that the company saw enough potential to set up a separate marketing strategy including a website for this sector. Angus enthuses, “Loads of the cinemas we do are still within a wider project, but we are seeing an increase in the standalone business where this is all people want.
Making a big splash across the automation world recently was the roll out of 140 Certified Control4 dealers. The idea is to reward some of the top dealers globally with special certification and marketing support including a dealer locator via Control4’s website to drive footfall from members of the public as well as developers, interior designers and architects, so they can experience Control4. Kevin takes up the story, “I think we were one of the first in the UK to be approached over a year ago. Our ears pricked up when we heard, but we wanted more detail. Satisfied it was going to benefit us, we wanted to be involved. As the number of Control4 dealers in the UK has grown, the value to us is being recognised as a Certified Showroom Dealer. Physically we did not have to do too much to our showroom to meet the standards, but we did have to pass the certification checks.” Angus adds, “We feel it’s a clever move, putting the dealer in control. We do use some of the corporate showrooms, in fact we are up at the Lutron one next week, but there is nothing like being on home soil; we know our systems inside out and can deliver a rich experience for the customer. “Before we were certified, Robert Kid, senior director of global field programs for Control4, paid us a visit to inspect the showroom, we had to give him the full demo as we would a client, but as I say, on home soil it was no problem and we passed.” The team also feels that the set-up the requirements are not too restrictive as to cramp the company’s style. Some brands, particularly in the AV space, have alienated dealers with overly draconian in-store demands, Control4 seems to have learnt that lesson. Kevin confirms, “They are realists about how we operate, they have not asked us to remove Lutron or anything like that from the showroom, they know it’s part of our business and so it’s not an issue.” Today’s event should be a good mixture of past clients, and some new faces come to enjoy the company’s fully loaded demo experience. Kevin, “Today is about influencers as much as anything, the response so far has been positive, so we are expecting a really good event. I am looking forward to getting as many people in front of the now Triad equipped cinema, I know they are going to love it.” The outdoor zone is also expected to do well. Angus jumps in, “We do find outdoor is big now, we were using Sonance, but these days tend to go with Triad because of the Control4 connection. It’s amazing how much people will spend on their outside spaces, not just speakers, but lighting, TVs and Wi-Fi.” The company is not stopping its development here however, there is new site, that Kevin and the team are planning to move to nearby, which will allow the company to reproduce all the demo facilities it currently has, but also house offices and work spaces all under one roof, riding the crest of a wave indeed. EssentialREVIEW Monitor Audio CP-IW560X
Monitor Audio CP-IW460X in-wall loudspeakers In a brand-new feature in Essential Install, respected AV reviewer Richard Stevenson puts some top CI products through their paces. This month he takes a look at the Monitor Audio’s CPIW460X, the company’s latest in-wall loudspeakers. Sitting at the top of Monitor Audio’s Controlled Performance custom install loudspeaker range, the CP-IW260X and CP-IW460X are large, three-way, five driver in-wall models. The CP-IW260X uses MA’s 25mm dome tweeter while the CP-IW460X tested here boasts an audiophile spec ribbon HF unit derived from the brand’s flagship Platinum series Hi-Fi speakers. It also features MA’s premium underhung voice coil drivers with dimpled ‘RST’ mid and bass cones. The closed cabinet, with separate cup-enclosures for the mid drivers, is a key part of the ‘controlled’ series name. The sealed box design, robust polymer cabinet and die-cast alloy baffle make the speaker performance far less sensitive to the wall construction or the size of the void behind. That has allowed MA to create a wide bandwidth, high efficiency in-wall
loudspeaker promising audiophile sound irrespective of the installation. The five-driver complement is arranged in d’appolito configuration with the 4in mid drivers and 6.5in bass units symmetrically flanking the tweeter. When the line of drivers is arranged vertically the design gives an extremely wide horizontal dispersion, albeit at the expense of some output above and below the mid axis. The ribbon tweeter also produces its output in a wide horizontal arc, giving the CP-IW460X a smooth frequency response across multiple listening positions. That benefit is not lost if the speaker is installed horizontally, as the whole tweeter pod can be rotated through 90°. Audio trims are front mounted and cover +/-1dB MF, +/-1dB HF and a boundary gain compensation switch.

EssentialREVIEW Monitor Audio CP-IW560X
Mounting
The CW460X is a big speaker with an 878 x 228mm cut out and weighs over 12kg. Each unit is supplied with a crisp installation card template, neatly printed with details such as precise driver position. Given the limited vertical dispersion it would be prudent to mount these speakers with the tweeter at the listener’s approximate ear height when seated. The cabinet’s 12mm baffle edge extending beyond the cut-out is pre-fitted with a thin sealing tape. This was slightly bunched-up on the radiused corners so didn’t create a fully air-tight seal. That’s not a major issue with the closed-cabinet CP-IW460X, but might require extra sealing if open backed speakers are installed in the same wall. Monitor Audio offers a Pre-Construction Bracket that can be banded to joists and studs prior to installing plasterboard. You can locate the metal frame with a stud finder and the design gives extra support to the speaker’s mounting lugs. The lugs are a traditional cam-lock design and there are 10 of them, creating a very secure fit. They will handle substrates up to 40mm thick. The speaker’s minimal 96mm mounting depth is nicely shallow, making it ideal for false wall installs. The full-cover grill has a paintable white finish. It latches on to 24 magnets around the speaker perimeter and another 10 around the central tweeter and MF driver baffle. The grille is seriously secure and small rubber buffers on the baffle ensure it doesn’t vibrate in use.
Installation
Without the benefit of the optional WB12 PreConstruction Bracket, I personally considered installing such a large, weighty speaker in unsupported 12.5mm plasterboard was a bit ‘risky’. So, the test wall was built with a 9mm ply and faced with plasterboard, creating a more solid 21+mm substrate. The cut-out template was accurate but do be aware that getting it properly vertical is critical. Just a degree out and the speaker will look wonky. Given the height there isn’t a great deal of wiggle room to retrim the hole either. By balancing the speaker in the bottom of the cutout you can connect cables to the gold-plated spring terminals with the other hand. The 10 cam-lugs are secured with a pozi screwdriver and MA has sensibly made the driver bolts Allen sockets to differentiate the two. With all 10 lugs tightened, the speaker pulled up very snug and secure. The grille popped on with equal solidity. Be aware that the fixing screws are not captive in the lugs. If removing the speaker there is every danger of over loosening the screw and the plastic lug falling into the wall void. Once again, we make the mistakes so you don’t have too…
Performance The CP-IW460X delivers high 89dB/W efficiency, 150W power handling and a smooth frequency response from around 80Hz (-10dB) up. The LF extension as installed doesn’t quite live up to MA’s claim of 50Hz but is still low enough to keep any attached sub below 100Hz. The ribbon tweeter offers very smooth and even HF response, extending near flat out to well above 20kHz. The installed speaker frequency response shows a gentle slope gain from 250Hz to 2.5kHz. That gives the speaker a lively sound and adds to its sense of projecting music and movies spaciously into the room. Using the -1dB MF and HF trims reduced the upper half gain a little but the effect is subtle. Most install speakers usually offer +/- 2 or 3dB trims. The boundary gain compensation switch trims LF response to counteract the wall-gain but it is equally subtle. Given that the HF lift from 2.5kHz anyway, we would leave
BDC off and use the wall-gain to balance overall sound. As predicted the dispersion pattern is supremely wide with barely any HF roll off even at 45° off axis. That makes these speakers ideal for covering a wide area of the room and across multiple seating positions. Equally predictably, HF response fell off a cliff much above or below the tweeter axis, so do make sure you rotate that tweeter pod if installing the speaker horizontally. With careful installation, particularly achieving correct tweeter height and orientation, MA’s CP-IW460X is an outstanding in-wall loudspeaker. Installation is straightforward, the mounting is very secure, and the grille is excellent. Sonic performance is everything you would expect from MA’s premium design and Hi-Fi heritage, with superb imaging, smooth extended frequency response and a lively, engaging sound.

Opulent offerings of AV automation Wilson? Pick it! TuneTot is the latest product from the Wilson Special Applications Engineering team
Wilson Audio’s smallest-ever speaker, is designed to bring the company’s exemplary sonic standards to tight, awkward, acoustically hostile spaces around the home, and can be customised with accessories to suit the location, both aesthetically and acoustically. The cabinets are made from Wilson Audio’s proprietary, ultravibration-resistant ‘X-material’ and ‘S-material’ composites, incorporating a 5.75in mid/bass driver and 1in tweeter. TuneTot is the latest product from the Wilson Special Applications Engineering team. While its name pays homage to the first WSAE product, it is a modern technical tour de force designed to offer timbral beauty, dynamic nuance, soundstage resolution, and transparency—all the hallmarks of Wilson loudspeakers design culture—but do so in environments which are hostile to all of those qualities. TuneTot is the smallest and least expensive Wilson, but it would be a mistake to see it as an ‘entry-level’ offering. TuneTots are lovingly fabricated and assembled by the same group of talented craftsmen who build the WAMM Master Chronosonic, using exactly the same processes and techniques. Its cabinet and driver technology are derived directly from the top end Alexx and Sabrina lines. Finally, each TuneTot that emerges from Wilson is held to the same rigorous manufacturing tolerances as its larger siblings, ensuring each TuneTot is as technically and musically accurate as the reference prototype. The 4K 9:9 Neso is a modular channel distribution unit designed for ease of install
Smart-e pants Smart-e has introduced the first in its new ‘Neptune’ range, the 4K 9:9 ‘Neso’. The Neso is a modular channel distribution unit, built with ease of installation and maintenance in mind. Smart-e says this product is perfect for the installation and upkeep of medium to large scale AV projects. Extending high speed video signals is one of those unseen but essential aspects of AV installations, and while individual TX/RX pair devices with separate PSUs can do the job, a modular unit is ideal for any installer looking to create a compact, reliable and future proofed installation for the client, says the maker. . To accomplish this, the Neso allows for up to nine 4Konnect modules to be housed in a 19in rack mounting unit, capable of transmitting or receiving up to nine different 4K UHD video signals and then repeating them to over 100m of CAT 6 cable. An integrated internal PSU powers all modules and provides inline power to the external transmitter and receivers, removing the need for external power supplies. Each bay has a universal connection system allowing either a transmit or receive module to be installed. This approach enables the installer to select which combination of input/output modules to suit their individual application. Modules can be added later providing on-site expansion capability, including: 4K-MOD-IO ‘Meteor’: a HDMI input/ output module designed to provide a native 4K HDMI connection, 4K-MOD-TXF ‘Asteroid’: a HDBT transmitter module capable of transmitting UHD resolution video over 100m of Cat6 cable and 4K-MOD-RXF ‘Comet’: a HDBaseT receiver module capable of receiving UHD resolution video over 100m of Cat6 cable These 4Konnect modules can be mixed and matched to create a versatile solution to any installation requirements. The modular nature of the Neso allows for the mixing of CAT 6 TX & RX modules together with local HDMI pass through, providing the installer with a flexible and efficient method of designing a flexible, future proofed, reliable and easily to repair installation. Smart-e 01306 628 264, smart-e.co.uk
Sonos beaming with pride Sonos has been making lots of noise about its second Alexa-enabled speaker. Beam is a neat little unit which combines voice activation and a compact sound-bar for enhanced TV audio playback as well as stand-alone music. This of course is the first sound-bar from Sonos, the Sonos Playbar and Playbase can also be controlled via Alexa, although both speakers lack the Alexa assistant directly on-board. Both speakers are also more expensive than the newly-announced Sonos Beam. Priced at $399 in the US, £399 in the UK, and €449 in the EU, the Sonos Beam packs a lot of technology into a small package and to be frank makes the Playbar look a little pricey. At around 60% smaller and 20% shorter than the existing Playbar, the Beam loses some of the speakers that were packed inside the Playbar, but it still boasts four full-range tweeters and an individual tweeter. This may mean sound quality isn’t quite as crisp as its bigger brother, but at nearly half the price, it may be a trade-off worth investing in for not just under a second zone TV, but also for playback in areas such as the kitchen as it comes with its own bracket for mounting. The speakers are powered by five Class-D digital amplifiers that have been tuned to match the speaker drivers and acoustic architecture. Sonos has also included three passive radiators, that it says will make deep, warm bass fill the room. Despite the lower price and smaller former factor, the Sonos Beam is still capable of playing Dolby Digital 5.1 audio over HDMI-ARC, or PCM stereo sound. That’s in addition to the over 80 streaming services that are supported, including Apple Music, Amazon Music, Spotify, Deezer, and Tidal. AirPlay 2 support has also been confirmed. Beam includes a five linear far-field microphone array, which the maker says should pick up voice commands even when music is being played. Like the Sonos One, the Sonos Beam will gain a wide range of functions from Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant – but we imagine there will be limitations here too. That means voice calling friends and family won’t be here, although things like reminders and the ability to shop will be. Alexa, play my Sonos speaker

Anything can happen A huge benefit of the IPA is that it is powered by PoE
GJD has launched its IPAnything module (IPA), a simple yet powerful input/output controller, which is designed to convert any type of analogue sensor to an IP system, or vice versa. The IPAnything is built in a compact, heavy duty waterproof housing and is fitted with a 12V/24V DC socket to power the sensor, four alarm inputs, three relay outputs and an analogue input. The IPAnything allows the installer to create individual network alarms to connect video management systems (VMS), IP cameras or other network devices. It enables the installer to monitor and control alarm sensors, sirens, gates and lights. In addition, its web-based user interface is an intuitive way for installers to configure network alarms for integration with VMS software, or direct control of cameras. The IPAnything provides flexibility as it is easy for installers to add IP devices onto an analogue based security or home automation system. This has many advantages including a cost-effective way to future proof the site as new actions can be created and adjusted over the network. It is also simple to add additional IP products onto the network. Greg Stuttle, business development manager at GJD comments, “The IPAnything is an extremely useful device. It has proved itself to be a very versatile product as it is a problem solver for projects that require analogue equipment to be converted on to an IP system”. Another huge benefit of the IPA is that it is powered by PoE, which is more cost effective and environmentally friendly than connecting to mains power, delivering reduced overhead costs from the reduction of power outlets required per installed device and reduced cabling on site.
