WAVE GOODBYE TO ISE SAY HOLA! TO EI LIVE!
So, this issue has our very last review of an Amsterdam ISE show. EI has to say that we will really miss the city, it’s been a fantastic host for the show to develop and always provides loads more than just the basic amenities expected from a host city. So, ISE moves onto Barcelona, which should offer some of the less stoic visitors the raise in temperature many have been craving since the announcement was made and is of course a fantastic city with many architectural and cultural wonders. The venue (Gran Via) part of the Fira de Barcelona exhibition complex is impressive, is much larger, has better transport links (Rai Taxi queue anyone?) and should be easier to navigate. As well as checking out our review of the show, which begins on page 45, also take a look at the fully multi-media review on our website (essentialinstall.com) which has some fantastic interviews carried out by Ben Davies of Inspire AV and the Smart Homme Facebook group who became our video editor for the show. Ben did a great job at the event, bringing energy and enthusiasm to our coverage, defo be doing that again, and not just at ISE.
EI LIVE!
However, it can’t have escaped your notice that this year getting to Amsterdam was a challenge. Even though it’s one of the shortest trips on a plane you can make from the UK to a foreign country and driving there is not the end of the world, just getting to the show was not easy for
all the reasons we are all too aware of. Also, the distance that Barcelona will add, especially if you are used to driving to ISE, adds another challenge in the decisionmaking process. Fortunately, EI Live! is now just around the corner (April 21-22, Farnborough Exhibition Centre), ready to deliver a huge helping of demos, networking, learning experiences, an awards evening, and many other business benefits. Taking on the status of a truly national trade show for our industry, the move to the new venue last year has raised the show’s game considerably, so much so that the exhibition space had to be made larger this year as the allocated space booked at the venue sold out before Christmas. This year we are building on 2019 by adding new features and improving existing ones. Check out our mini preview in this issue and then the main preview in the April issue of the magazine. If you are exhibiting don’t forget to let us know what you are getting up to at the show. Our promotion of the event now enters its final phase and we will be publishing stories regularly on our website, letting the install universe know what is happening at the show. If you are an installer, other industry steakholder or work in a related field, registration is now open, just get along to www.eiliveshow.com and sign up! See you in April! Daniel J Sait Editor

LOEWE SETS COURSE FOR THE FUTURE Following much speculation about the company’s future, and after the takeover of the Loewe brand in December 2019 by investment group Skytec, the company has revealed its plans for the immediate future. After successful discussions with the city of Kronach, Loewe now takes over 25,000 square meters at the traditional company headquarters and at the same time hires the first 45 employees to restart. With these personnel, the construction of the new company headquarters in Kronach begins and from here the further expansion into international markets will be coordinated. With a view to retail, the new management says it is working hard to restore the supply chains so that from April 2020 onwards most of Loewe’s well known Loewe portfolio can be offered again, thus ensuring planning security for the partners. A team of initially nine experienced sales employees will start looking after existing and establishing new trading partnerships this February. For the restart, Loewe and the new owners receive support from suppliers and technology
partners such as LG Display and other manufacturers of panels and key components. With this help, most of the current Loewe portfolio is to be made available and can be ordered again quickly. The company says customers and sales partners can rely on the proven and award-winning product quality, which has already made up a significant part of the brand reputation in the past. “After the takeover of Loewe, we very quickly sought contact with suppliers and industrial partners and received extremely positive feedback and comprehensive support for our plans,” said Vladislav Khabliev, CEO of Skytec. This support includes in particular the Chinese company Hisense, which also offered to take over Loewe. The technology partnership between the two companies that has existed since 2013 should remain in the future and even be expanded. IFA 2020 is scheduled as the major re-launch platform. PULSE-EIGHT
LET’S GET AMPED! Marc Waple, Director of Sales at Pulse-Eight, introduces an exciting new product to the Pulse-Eight family. As we famously exit the European Union, savvy custom integrators need to start looking at where and how they are sourcing their audio and video products for their client’s projects. It’s all too easy to stick to the same brands and suppliers, unaware of the changes and cost implications of importing products from across the world into the UK. Not to mention the evergrowing number of so-called manufacturers who purchased their product from one or two factories in China, thus creating a glut of similar products with ever decreasing margins for you, the integrator. As a polar opposite to all these challenges Pulse-Eight has famously designed, manufactured and shipped all of its products since its inception 10 years ago from its manufacturing facility located in the south of the UK, enabling it to offer a truly competitive and unique solution for video and audio distribution. As a proud contributing member of the HDBaseT alliance and CEDIA, Pulse-Eight understands the challenges you face every day and designs and builds products to help you overcome these.
After a hugely successful final farewell to ISE 2020 in Amsterdam, Pulse-Eight announced three brand new products during the show, however the one that gained the most excitement was the forthcoming ProAmp8. The ProAamp8 boasts many innovations in audio distribution and one-off never before seen solutions in a single box. Not only is the new Amp a 16-channel, eight zone 100W ear splitting beast, but also with the addition of a digital multi-channel audio input, it is a one-ofa-kind home theatre amplifier and multizone distribution amplifier in one box. Partner the new ProAmp8 with the awardwinning neo:X+ or one of Pulse-Eight’s ProAudio full DSP EQ attenuating pre-amplifiers and matching 4K UHD matrixes will deliver you a bespoke unique solution for clients on all budgets. In addition to this, thanks to the unique way PulseEight is manufactured, working in partnership with all major control brands enables a truly automated experience for client and this is something the company holds close to its core values. MARCH 2020 17
BUILD YOUR GARDEN OASIS ON GREAT SOUND Capitalise on the urge to maximise garden space with a wider range of Sonance all-weather systems says Habitech’s Giovanni Scatola. With spring more or less in full swing, now is the perfect time to be pitching your clients with the best garden sound. And not only because the season is letting in more daylight. Consumer trends are changing in your favour as well. Expert zeitgeist follower and former Tesco supremo Sir Terry Leahy recently enlightened the Horticultural Trades Association, revealing that people value experiences over ownership, place a premium on social occasions, pay for convenience (more ‘do it for me’ than DIY) and are looking for a tailored solution. Couple these revelations with a £5.2 billion-a-year
Sonance’s famously discreet SAT/Sub form-factor is at play in the new Patio Series, perfect for bijou spaces
18 MARCH 2020
penchant for garden improvement (according to Santander Insurance) and the prospects for your services couldn’t be more fertile. Out there in leafy suburbia your next customers are creating charismatic oases of garden living, so it’s time to plant the desire for great sound between the fancy man caves, she-sheds, outdoor dining areas and snazzy lighting designs.
WORK WITH THE NEW TERRA FORMERS
You’ll be helped by the need to obey the ‘improve-don’t-move’ mantra within your target demographic. These property-rich/time-poor denizens are avoiding the spiralling costs of ‘upping sticks’ by enhancing the experience of living at home. The popularity of home working is also driving the integration of home and garden at the centre of lifestyle support. City workers are spending as much as £70K on state-ofthe-art ‘garden rooms’, which double as offices,
from companies such as ‘Garden Hideouts’ and the ‘Posh Shed Company’. These guys, along with the elite garden kitchen suppliers, uber hot tub builders and luxury landscapers etc, are profiting from the impulse to maximise the value of outside spaces for work, rest and play. They’re successfully serving your target market, so the opportunity to install the best garden sound must also be up for grabs. And when this happens, the new Sonance outdoor range will play completely into your hands.
FIRST IN THE FIELD
This is because the world’s original architectural speaker brand has expanded its award-winning outdoor range still further with a new sat-sub range dubbed the Patio Series, and the Omni6T, an all-weather omni-directional speaker. CEDIA
AV CAREER DAY - AN ISE HIGHLIGHT Oliver Hall of CEDIA Member, Ultamation, reflects on a successful industry initiative. ISE 2020 was a fantastic show and a very special one for Ultamation. We were delighted to partner with CEDIA and the University of Liverpool as we worked with both organisations on a great initiative called AV Career Day. Ultamation has had a long history with the University of Liverpool. We first recruited from the University back in 2011. Since that time, we’ve stayed in close contact and tend to use the Liverpool students as our first port of call when looking for new employees. Last year, I was invited to sit on the University’s Electrical Engineering and Electronics Industrial Advisory Panel, which involves sitting in on final year project presentations and giving feedback. This allows Ultamation to contribute in a real way to the quality of students coming into our industry and, hopefully, open their eyes to new career opportunities. Naturally, we were delighted to build on this relationship and work with CEDIA to bring
20 MARCH 2020
students from the University of Liverpool to ISE 2020 as part of AV Career Day. We selected students from Computer Science, Electronic Engineering and Software Development courses based on video applications, where they had to explain why they wanted to go to the show and why they should be selected over other students. Ahead of the show, we ran a mini ISE bootcamp, where we presented an overview of the industry and the exhibitors who take part in ISE. We also took part in a Q and A session with the selected students about what would be in store at ISE 2020. We then worked closely with Aneta, CEDIA’s Education Manager, to plan the day, arranging timings for specific stand visits and ensuring that students would be able to experience some of the cool technology demonstrations on offer at ISE. The day itself was an unqualified success. Students really appreciated the opportunity to take part in the event. It opened up their eyes to the range of career choices available to them within the integrated systems market, and allowed them to consider working with small and medium-sized enterprises rather than
just the larger companies. It also helped the University build relationships with some of the companies, who (ordinarily) they wouldn’t get a chance to visit. Overall, I think the whole experience has brought great benefits. From an Ultamation perspective, we are always hopeful that we might get our next recruit through events such as this. It gives us the opportunity to get to know the students better and become more familiar with their syllabus and where their skills lie. It also allows the students to learn about us as a company, understand more about what we do and what’s possible in our industry. AV Career Day was a great success. It was a fantastic turnout of 170 students from all around Europe – not just our group from Liverpool - and shows just how much potential interest there is in our industry. There’s a lot of budding talent out there so it’s brilliant to be able to show off our industry at this type of event and we look forward to building on this platform in the years to come. Thanks ISE and thanks CEDIA for the opportunity!

JUST ADD THE POWER OF ENADO Chris Cadwallader, Technical Advisor for OneAV explains why Just Add Power and Enado work so well together. Just Add Power is a cost-effective 4K Ultra HD video-over-IP system with integrated video wall capabilities. Enado is a profitable intuitive control and automation solution. Used together to deliver the ultimate viewing experience, users can change any display to any source and select their desired video wall configuration on the fly, whether it be one large image across all the displays, nine independent images, or any combination in between with one simple touch using any web-browser enabled device. That can even be a cost-effective sub £100 device like an Amazon Echo Show. The J+P platform supports 4K Ultra HD resolutions with no latency over a single Cat 5e cable, HDMI 2.0 devices with HDCP 2.2, HDR, HDR10, and uncompressed lossless multichannel audio formats — including Dolby Atmos— offers built-in video wall functionality for displays installed in portrait and flipped

configurations, as well as image push, pull, and pop features. An integrated scaler on the receiver automatically adjusts the picture to fit the screen. Control inputs with RS-232, CEC, and IR are all available. The J+P and Enado demo was extremely popular at ISE and the pairing was described as ‘a match made in heaven’.
Why do they work well together? Just Add Power is an IP controlled system whose source to display control is determined by the switching of VLANs present on the PoE switch powering the Just Add Power devices. Enado is an affordable, flexible and simple operating system/brain that facilitates superior control through a simple touch screen interface that runs on any web-enabled device, smartphone or tablet. One of the main methods of control Enado offers is IP, making Enado ideal for Just Add Power. With Enado, you can create a button that is capable of doing any amount of commands. Do you want to switch Display X to Source Y? It
can do that! Want to switch your video wall (16 devices) to Source Z? It can do that no problem. Control of Just Add Power’s switching is not the limit here. With a static route comes Layer 3 control. This enables you to control every Just Add Power device individually, however you may need. Typically you would use this to send serial commands over IP, change video wall modes and so much more. From my experience with Just Add Power and Enado, my options have been limitless. Those of you who went to our stand at ISE will have seen the interface we had created and how easy and simple it was to use.
How is it set up? You can import a file pre-generated by Just Add Power, and this gives you all of the switching commands that you need in order to control your video over IP solution. From there, you can create buttons within the Enado system and start assigning these commands to them however you would like to. It’s extremely easy and takes just a few minutes.
ONEAV
What is the new J+P Warp Drive? J+P recently released the 737POE 3G Warp Engine Transmitter, enabling users to rotate any video signal up to 1/10th of one degree. The 737POE can be added to a currently installed Just Add Power 3G system to rotate any source in the system. A single 3G Warp Engine Transmitter can build a full Mosaic Video Wall with the ability to show any source in the system. Just Add Power has always been able to offer mosaic walls, but the display screens always had to be hung level. Should you wish to tilt a screen, you can rotate the on-screen display live as it happens, making video walls easier than ever.
What interfaces for control can be used? Enado can be used with anything that has a web browser, so your tablet, phone, computer, Echo Show, Smart TV etc. Simply type in or favourite the IP address of the Enado and you’ll be given control of your devices. You can even create
shortcuts to make it look like an app to your client. Enado allows you to view its interface differently for mobile and larger devices which can be customised individually.

As briefly touched on before, it’s a simple import file for all of your commands. Then assign your commands to whichever buttons you wish. The Enado system can be as simple or as complicated as you would like it to be, but OneAV will always assist you as much as we can.
Where can I learn more about J+P & Enado? We have a free webinar series around Enado including an episode about how you can integrate Just Add Power. Alternatively, you can arrange a call with any of the technical team to answer any questions you may have. Another option would be to arrange a face-toface meeting with one of the team, where we’ll come to you at a time convenient to teach you everything you need to know. Remember you’ll

This year our Technical Theatre will once again deliver valuable insights into the industry to enable visitors to make informed decisions moving forward. William Hopkins of driver creation experts Intrinsic Dev is a global leader in the field of smart homes and future technologies. He is a
EI LIVE!
KNX Partner, Member of the British Computer Society and Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology. William will present a talk entitled ‘Top 5 Industry Trends Of 2019 – What Can We Learn From Them?’ Focusing on the five of the key trends in the smart home industry from 2019, the talk will look at the impact they have had on the Audio-Visual installers and integrators. The session will also reflect on how the emergence of these trends has forced the industry evolve and adapt to the new challenges and situations. In analysing these trends, the talk will look how installers can capitalise on them and ensure continuing profitability. Andy Oattes is the Sales Director of OneAV UK, and will offer a session entitled, ‘Hi-Fi To CI To CI-FI & Why?’ Andy says, “Technology consistently disrupts consumers ability to enjoy their audio content in the way that they’d like. Recent technological advances have now made it much easier to provide the best audio performance for our clients. We will look at how we achieve the balance between the content and the user experience, most importantly of all, what’s the optimum business model?” Hugo Fitzjohn, Education Manager at Meridian Audio, will present a session entitled, ‘Sell Clients Experiences’. Hugo argues, “When selling systems to clients whether it be lighting, control, network, multi-room audio, cinema or any combination of these it’s often the easy route to focus on specification sheets and equipment lists required for a project. “The reality is that most clients don’t know what each line items means to them other than less money in their wallet, thus eroding any sense of value. In this session we’ll look how we can leverage emotional engagement and refocus
how we approach selling potentially complex systems and give clients the value that they are looking for whilst improving your profitability. Mike Ranpura is the Director of London based technology integration firm Smart Life AV. Smart Life AV was established in 2014 and operates primarily in the residential sector. In 2019, Smart Life AV was recognised as one of the first ten companies worldwide to achieve CEDIA Advanced Member status. Mike’s talk will be called, ‘CEDIA Through The Eyes Of A Technology Integrator’. Mike will guide you through his personal journey with CEDIA, from becoming a member in 2016 to currently serving as a CEDIA Commissioner. He will explain how you can maximise your membership investment and take advantage of various benefits such as the Outreach Instructor, Member of Excellence and Certification programs to help you elevate your own business. With first-hand experience, he will provide unbiased insight into what approaches work best, reveal what the future holds for the association and how you can get involved. Davy Currie is the Managing Director of Infracore Home Technology Consultancy, Founder of Infracore Group (a new start-up accelerator for the AV & Integrated Systems sector) and sits on a board as Non-Executive Director with two other home technology companies. His session is entitled ‘Diversify Or Die!’ Davy says, “The speed at which our industry is evolving is forcing us to continuously make changes to how we operate. How do you maintain a decent profit whilst frequently reinventing the wheel? And really how quickly is the technology advancing? I’ll be putting forward some interesting facts and figures to answer this question and thoughts on how to keep up. “I’ve asked some industry friends in different
positions from manufacture to installation and may have uncovered a winning formula which we can all follow. As well as exploring some thoughts on where we’ll be in 5, 10 and 15 years, I’ll be looking at the strategies, tools, hacks and help available for all of us. PULSE CINEMAS
A DAMN FINE TOUR With yet another successful ISE Tour completed, the team reflect on the unique insights the initiative provides into the brands and the value added by working with Pulse Cinemas. Tour leader and Pulse Cinemas Internal Sales Manager, Simon Schino, explains, “This year’s tour provided another great chance for installers to learn loads about the fantastic brands we supply and support, speaking directly to those who create the products. The success we have had with the previous tours has meant that the numbers have grown each year with 2020 seeing 95 installers join us on our curated trips around the ISE. “Support from the brands was once again fantastic as each provided genuine insight into their USPs, practices and key products for this year. The only problem we have now is how to top this year once the show moves to Barcelona in 2021, but don’t worry we are determined to make it even bigger and better!” EI tagged along on one of the tour sessions and first stop was the Screen Research
26 MARCH 2020
stand where visitors got an insight into some important new changes. Most Screen Research customers know that the XLR3 Décor Mask is the company’s ultimate statement, providing acoustic transparency as well as the ability to automatically adjust to the right screen format for the content being shown. However, what they may not have been aware of is that the topquality acoustic material used on this screen is now available on a wider choice of frames, making better audio performance available across a wider range of budgets. The company’s Décor Mask feature, where customers can have a design of their choice printed onto a protective and decorative cover that comes into place when the screen is not in use, is also now available to a wider choice of models. Onto the Fortress Seating stand and there was more good news. Simon explains, “This was a chance to show how working closely with the brands we supply delivers way more than just delivering the products. We have worked closely with Gabi Wolper, Vice President at Fortress, to produce a special edition of the company’s
most popular seat - the Matinee - which delivers all of the luxury the company is known for but at under £2.5K, a really competitive price for a seat of this quality.” Still using features the maker is known for, such as highly durable materials, stainless steel cup holders and a precise incline mechanism, the special edition uses a high-quality faux leather to deliver the new price point. As well as the standard seat, other options such as sofas and chaise lounge are available. The RTI automation platform is one of the newest additions to the Pulse Cinemas family and was joining the tour for the first time. Visitors to the RTI stand learnt that the RTI Apex training introducing installers to the platform is now being delivered in-house at Pulse Cinemas on a regular basis. Check with the team for details. RTI staff were at pains to underline the level of customisation now available with RTI right out of the box, a level its staff argue compares very well with rival systems such as Control4. As well as highlighting the raised level of
PULSE CINEMAS
customisation, RTI also had some new hardware too. Audio distribution gets a boost with the CP-16i, which expands the company’s line of audio distribution systems and is compatible with virtually any other system. Providing 100W of audio to 16 channels and bridgeable audio outputs for increased power, the unit offers thermal overload and overcurrent monitoring, while Class-D amplification ensures efficient heat dissipation and low power consumption. Available in rackmount or freestanding options, the amplifier requires just one rack space. Hand-held controllers on display included the new T4x, featuring a sleek design that offers strong ergonomics, a high-resolution 4in capacitive touchscreen and fully programmable soft-touch buttons. The T4x also offers grip sensors, Wi-Fi and dual RF. For environments that are too harsh for standard remote controls, RTI also has up its sleeve the U3 weatherproof controller. Featuring an electronic ink display, the durable remote uses inductive charging and wireless programming updates, allowing the unit to be completely sealed. Installers also got to learn about the RTiQ intelligent remote monitoring system, a cloud-based approach which monitors RTI control system components and other electronic systems.
CREATING THE PERFECT MULTI-ROOM ENVIRONMENT
Most installers would be aware of the power and quality delivered by the Anthem brand in creating high-quality single room experiences such as cinemas when coupled with the company’s powerful room correction technology, ARC Genesis. Tour attendees however also got the run down on the inclusion of ARC Genesis in the MDX series of multi-zone amplifiers, offered in eight and 16-channel configurations (MDX8, MDX-16). Installers get the ARC Genesis platform built-in for each zone the amps are powering, so a multi-zone system covering kitchen, bedroom, even a bathroom can have all the advantages of ARC Genesis. Simon enthuses, “For multi-room systems, we think the combination of Anthem quality and the ARC Genesis technology is a total game changer allowing installers to take a no compromise approach to multi-zone music systems.” From Paradigm, tour attendees got to learn more about the Décor Custom Collection, a family of bespoke sound-bars created to match exactly the proportions of any given flat screen TV. All installers need to do is supply the make and model and the experts at Paradigm do the rest. Another big highlight of the tour was the chance to get the full run-down on one of the biggest launches happening at the show for AV focused installers, StormAudio’s MK2 platform, created to deliver next level home cinema performance.
Sporting a clean and cool new exterior, the MK2 line-up offers 16, 24 or 32-channel analogue preamp/processor versions, a fully loaded digital AES 32-channel machine as well as 8 and 16-channel amps. StormAudio already supported Dolby Atmos, DTS :X, Auro-3D, Dirac Live Room Calibration as well as including StormAudio’s own web-based remote monitoring tool, StormMonitoring. With MK2 installers now also get DTS:X Pro, IMAX Enhanced, Auro-3D Version 2, eARC HDMI, 24-channel (13.1.10 Dolby Atmos and DTS:X Pro) decoding, rapid codec switching (as much as 50% improvement), and advanced bass management including Dirac Live Bass Control module carried across the new 4.0 firmware package. StormAudio’s own 7+2 eARC HDMI card is of particular note, delivering quicker, reliable switching with total HDMI2.0b/HDCP2.2 support. Simon explains, “MK2 is ready for ordering now and it’s just awesome so get in touch and start planning your next cinema install, insuring you specify the very best available.” Last stop on the tour, Vicoustic, a brand that looks to offer the best acoustic treatment products and importantly design support. Made using PET, a material created entirely from recycled plastic, the products are environmentally sustainable. Vicoustic also supplies a full design service that for £200 provides a complete work up of what is needed and where to treat a given room. The price for the design comes off the order if and when the project goes ahead. The company also underlined its VicPattern Ultra Wavewood panel launched last year, offering both absorption and reflection panels. Stuart Burgess of Just Add Popcorn, one of the installers in attendance sums up, “Seeing the Pulse team is always one of our ISE highlights and this year’s manufacturer tour did not disappoint. Hosted by the awesome Simon
Schino, we were taken on an informative tour of some of the brands available through Pulse. The selection was great, ranging from the amazing new processor from StormAudio to the beautiful and comfy seating from Fortress. It’s a great way for us to look at what is new and Simon does a great job of explaining the products. We find the tour so much more informative than just going from stand to stand by ourselves.”
IT’S PARTY TIME!
Also back this year was the Pulse Cinemas sponsored trip to the excellent De Biertuin Prinsengracht, a purveyor of fine food and hundreds of select beers from around the world. Stephen Carr, Brand Manager for the Kaleidescape system, took the lead here and was keen to build on last year’s successful event. “For the last party in Amsterdam we felt this called for something special, so instead of just some of the venue, we took over the whole place! A great time was had by all and our brands were most generous in supporting and attending the event. Getting everyone together like this is so vital in building relationships and successful future projects. Only problem we have now, is topping this in Barcelona, but don’t worry we are already on the lookout for the perfect venue.” Stuart again sums up, “Of course equally as good, (if not slightly better), is the Pulse Party! Every year the Pulse team puts on an unforgettable night where we are treated to some amazing food and a great selection of beers, all whilst catching up with fellow installation companies and industry professionals. The evening is always the highlight of our trip and simply one of the best thank you a distributor can give to their customers” Pulse Cinemas www.pulsecinemas.com

TICKLED PINK?
Stuart Tickle, Managing Director of UK distributor AWE, attended the vast CES show in January this year and enjoyed walking the show floor to see the latest and greatest televisions. Here he picks out some of his favourites and offers his thoughts on the sector in general. TVs are always a major feature at CES. 4K and 8K screens were on display with technologies including Mini LED, Micro LED, OLED, QLED, ULED, and laser TV. Mini LED should not be confused with Micro LED. Mini LED (or ULED XD from Hisense) is the latest version of full array LED backlit LCD TV. The ‘mini’ refers to a substantially greater number of smaller and individually controllable backlight LEDs, virtually eliminating the halo/ blooming effect of lesser screens whilst simultaneously improving black levels. Micro LED is newer and potentially better. Being a direct view LED tech, it offers the self-emissive benefits of OLED and the brightness and longevity of LCD screens. The pixels are the LEDs themselves. At this stage, cost is much higher, and sizes start at over 75in, due to the density currently possible for a given resolution. However, modular designs allow any size and ratio to be configured, meaning displays the size of a cinema
screen or wall are possible. But don’t think of these as just being huge TVs. Although they can be, think of them as being a blank canvas that incorporates whatever background or screen size and ratio you like. Sony and Samsung lead the way in the scalable modular version, with Samsung also showing fixed sizes on the smaller screens. There were, however, multiple brands showing modular versions to varying levels of success. OLED was increasingly represented with Sony, Panasonic, and LG — all showing their latest variants, alongside a number of Chinese brands. New lifestyle designs of 4K alongside larger format and 8K resolution models were on display and are due for release in 2020. LG showed its Signature 65 ‘rollable’ screen as per last year, but promised it will come to market in 2020, albeit north of £60K. So, only for those who don’t consider price a barrier to purchase. Rotating TVs are apparently a thing now too. Aimed at generation ‘Z’, they automatically detect content and rotate the screen into portrait mode for footage and images shot in that format, mostly from mobiles. It reminded me of curved TV - so, a solution to a problem no-one needed solving, but then again, I am not the target audience…

HUGE, BUT HIDDEN Alastair Benn, MD of luxury TV brand Aquavision, tunes into the latest on the TV sector. We are all familiar with ‘conventional’ TV from 20 years ago. Watching a couple of channels at a pre-set time and running out to put the kettle on during the adverts and hoping to get back in time to watch the program when it comes back on. VCRs started to change this and Sky+ revolutionised it. You could pause live TV, record programs at the touch of a button and watch it when you want. You can fast forward the adverts and press pause when you need a break. It felt like we were in control of television for a change. It was all very good and you could get all programmes from all sources through one interface. Sky+ was the ‘go-to’ delivery medium. Its quality was ok, 1080i rather than 1080p but most people were happy with this. Fast forward five years and you have loads of delivery mediums that don’t talk to each other, programmes don’t come on at a pre-set time for you to record automatically, you have to pay multiple companies a subscription fee, and you have to remember what program is on what delivery medium, and get bombarded with ‘you watched this ’so may like this.’ You can binge watch your favourite programmes, and spend hours sat staring at your TV wondering where the time has gone. You can buy a certain brand of smart TV,
The world of TVs has transformed in recent years
32 MARCH 2020
but can’t get a certain media stream as the big brands have fallen out with each other. Your smart TV can no longer play another media source as it’s upgraded the App and is now no longer compatible with your two-year old TV. So, is this us in control of technology, or technology in control of us? It is definitely very disjointed, we need all the delivery players to talk to each other, make everything available on one portal, via one subscription. Then we can really just sit back and enjoy the quality of our fantastic televisions without being so frustrated from searching that we have not only run out of time, but patience too!
BETTER CONTENT
However, content is delivered to an incredible quality that far outweighs anything from 10 years ago. 4K televisions are now standard for most rooms, and 8K is starting to be available, GUIs are getting better, media servers are becoming more popular, everything is available instantly through downloading. Television as we knew it is dead. TVs are now generally just monitors. They play what we tell them to play, we are in control of this now. And when the delivery mediums catch up with being able to offer us simplicity to watch everything through a simple, single portal, we will really be able to sit back to enjoy the quality it’s filmed in. As installers, we need to embrace the fact that our customers want televisions in every room. From conventional rooms, living room, kitchen through to bathrooms, sauna and swimming pools. As an installer it’s your duty to
offer televisions in all these rooms, indoor and outdoor. But people don’t just want a standard black plastic box bolted to the wall anymore. As installers, we can all do better than this. We need to offer the customers televisions that blend discretely into the environment, televisions hidden behind mirrors, flush with the wall, lifting up from the floor, dropping down from the ceiling. We should offer them way more than they can buy at Currys or on eBay. Install it better than they can do it themselves, integrate it properly with everything else it can be integrated with. The content companies are working hard to give us a quality source, the TV manufacturers are working hard to give us a good quality player, we need the CI industry to specify and install it to the same quality, with respect to the surrounding design that the customer has probably spent obscene amount of money creating. Huge, but discrete, is where it’s at. It’s your duty as an installer to offer this to your customers. Be proud of what you charge, the products you specify, the service you give. You’re offering a professional product and a professional service. Our customers are professional people. They drive Ferraris not Fiestas! Don’t offer them the cheapest product for the job. It’s your reputation that is hinging on that cheap Chinese product you just fitted! As a professional installer, you do a good job and fit good products. Don’t be embarrassed to charge for it. As one famous brand says, ‘because your worth it’, and so is your customer and what you are selling them.

ESSENTIAL TVS
THERE IS HOPE FOR THE FUTURE OF TV Caroline Hope, Consumer Commercial Director, at influential distributor Exertis, provides an insight into how consumers’ relationships with the humble TV have transformed as the TV has become anything but humble. Without doubt, there have been considerable changes to the features found in TVs today. Smarter, thinner, lighter, larger, rollable, bendable and curvy with an often confusing range of high definition displays for consumers to choose from – LED, OLED, HD, HDR, 4K, 8K, etc. Smart capability and HD resolution (1920 x 1080) have been pretty much the standard but increasingly TV manufacturers and consumers are moving to 4K and, as seen at CES, even the first wave of 8K TVs from Samsung and LG have been announced with other manufacturers bound to follow. These developments provide a considerable step forward in the picture quality but content for 8K isn’t going to be mainstream for some time. So 4K will be the preferred choice and even that will require a decent internet connection when it comes to streaming content. According to Netflix’s website, the recommended speed to stream their content on an Ultra HD (4K) TV is 25 Megabits per second (Mbps). And Hulu isn’t
far behind, recommending 13 Mbps for 4K. Naturally, 8K will demand considerably more. Gaming is, however, a category which is helping to push the demand for 8K TVs, with the ability to work with popular consoles such as the new Xbox Series X or a PS 4, helping to provide a more immersive and exciting experience. Some models provide lower input lag which is important for gamers when it comes to rendering images. Enthusiasts will be pressing for even a second screen in the household to be a 4K TV and there are a number recommended for gamers. Of course, today’s TVs provide easy access to a number of popular apps and this has contributed to the amount and range of content that is available for viewing. Subscription to streaming services has become incredibly popular with Netflix, Sky, Disney and Amazon Prime leading the way in the UK. As a result, viewing habits have changed with content being consumed at the viewer’s behest and the TV becoming the key entertainment device for the family. Of course, streaming services will also provide some interesting developments with increasing Video On Demand services becoming available. Artificial Intelligence (AI) will capture better data analytics that will enable these providers to offer a more personalised content delivery with recommendations based on viewing habits.
Brilliant audio is perhaps one area that is still missing from most TVs. Installers should recommend adding some of the unobtrusive soundbars that are on the market. These can contribute to a far better cinematic or gaming experience for the family and additional profit for the installer. In addition, installers can look for opportunities to push some key smart tech products. It’s an exciting time for this market, we are seeing a seamless experience of smart doorbells and smart wireless cameras with smart TVs in a way that makes sense for the consumer – what better than to see who is at the door on your TV whilst watching a programme in the lounge or what that noise was outside whilst watching a late night movie from the comfort of your bed. There is a greater level of device integration between major smart tech brands - Samsung delivering on their SmartThings strategy with the current crop of Samsung TVs featuring SmartThings built in, Toshiba delivering Alexa enabled TVs and Facebook portal delivering affordable video conferencing to consumers. Voice enabled and smart technologies lead naturally to the installer being able to offer to supply, install and setup the new integrations between TVs and smart tech devices.
Gaming is influencing which TVs consumer want, especially in the 4K and 8K future

CASE STUDY: JUST ADD POPCORN
JUST ADD POPCORN SAYS ARTCOUSTIC A6S ARE A1 Stuart Burgess of Just Add Popcorn gives EI the full tour of this impressive home cinema, which went through some interesting changes as the concept developed through from planning to the final execution and was the first to employ Artcousitc A6 speakers. Stuart explains that the project came about after the client visited the Just Add Popcorn website, which he found via a Google search. The client reached out on the phone and Stuart arranged
a home visit to discuss the requirements and vision for the project. He explains, “The client was very open to our suggestions and really left it down to us to come up with the ideas for the room. The client’s original brief was to create a 10-seater cinema in a slightly smaller room than the one we ended up with. Our biggest challenge with the original room was the fact the screen wall was 1m less in width than the area in which we needed to fit the 10 seats (two rows of five).
“So the client could visualise the room, we drew up a render of the space to show them what the final room would look like and the finishes we wanted to use. On our second visit where we showed the clients what the space would look like, we were told that the plans had now changed and, rather than building the basement under the existing house, they were now going to excavate the back of the house and extend the basement and new kitchen (above the basement) into the garden.
MARCH 2020 39
CASE STUDY: JUST ADD POPCORN
The project was the first to use the Artcoustic A6S speaker
“This now gave us a complete blank slate where we decided (within reason) how big the room needed to be. Something that very rarely happens! Upon showing our initial ideas to the client, it was also decided to expand the seating to 15 with the front row being a mixture of single seating and lounge style seating.” So, armed with the new expanded plans and potential of the larger room, the team were able to revisit and revise. Stuart explains, “After the second meeting, we revisited our render and redesigned the space once the plans for the room had been drawn up by the architect. Although we had the freedom to suggest the size of the room, the
40 MARCH 2020
final space still had to fit in with the architectural specification of the build. “This presented us with a small issue on the width of the room and didn’t give us the measurement needed to get both the 15 seats in and build the walls out to recess speakers into (being a basement the walls were solid concrete). This ended up working in our favour, however, as it meant our only real option for speakers was going to be Artcoustic as we could mount this on the wall and then surround them with the stretched fabric walls.” Stuart adds, “We were also keen to use the new Artcoustic A6 speakers since seeing them at ISE in Amsterdam in 2019. The A6’s gave us
more control over the dispersion of sound from the LCR speakers, as they can be laser allied to cover the three rows of seats meaning that no matter where you sit in the room you do not end up in a ‘cheap seat’. “For the room, we decided to install a 9.2.4 Dolby Atmos configuration. We felt this best fit the size of the room and by installing front wide channels, there would be no large gaps in the audio between the front and side channels. Initially, we had also thought about installing a 9.4.4 set up with two smaller subwoofers at the rear of the room to help with any bass or standing wave issues we might have. “However, even though we pre-wired for
CASE STUDY: JUST ADD POPCORN
The style and construction of the room meant Artcoustic speakers were a logical choice
these, the two Control 3 subwoofers behind the screen ended up doing such an amazing job that the clients and their guests can’t believe the bass is just coming from behind the screen and not all four corners. After calibration, the room easily hits Dolby’s recommend level to be considered a Reference Cinema.” One of the client’s biggest requirements was that when watching movies, they wanted the projected image to be larger and more immersive than standard TV content. Stuart says, “To achieve this, we opted to install a 150in Lateral Masking Screen in a 2.35:1 ratio. This easily and automatically switches aspect ratio when the client selects the
content to watch via his Control4 system. They also have an override function on the system, so whilst watching the same source they can change the aspect ratio i.e. going from Sky Sports to Sky Movies.”
TECHNICAL CHALLENGES
Stuart reveals, “The main challenge with the room was space. Although we had a say on the size of the room, we still had to deal with challenges thrown at us by the architect and builder. The door into the room was one of our major issues. To get the speakers into the correct area behind the screen, we would normally build a false wall in front of the main
wall and mount the speakers on the wall and sit the subwoofers in the corners of the space. However, the width we had to work with from the door frame to the room’s structural wall was only 400mm. This issue was overcome by opting to install two Artcoustic Control 3 Subwoofers which could be wall mounted between the A6’s, allowing us to keep the screen wall at a reduced depth.” The client regularly holds events and parties at their house, so it was known from the off that the room would see lots of use and would need to show different sources of content. It was important the room delivered the wow factor when in the equipment was in use and when it wasn’t too.
MARCH 2020 41
CASE STUDY: JUST ADD POPCORN
Stuart says, “We planned the rooms décor to be minimal in colour by using grey stretched suede on the walls, with the main colours of the room coming from the eye-catching burgundy seats and the DMX controlled LED strips and starscape star ceiling. “We have programmed scenes into the room’s control system, so the client gets a different experience when they are watching TV or film. We have even programmed an intermission scene, meaning when they pause the movie to pop to the wine room for a fill up, the step lighting glows slightly so they can see where they are walking
The project evolved to be larger and with more seats than at the start

without dazzling their guests.” A really well executed project always throws up some favourite aspects of the finished cinema or the process – so what particularly stood out here? Stuart enthuses, “If you look at the render in VR whilst standing in the room, the similarity between our initial designs and the finished space is exactly what we set out to achieve. In terms of wow factor, the sound and picture are amazing and truly stunning; but in terms of fun, it always makes us smile when you switch between content and the lateral masking screen
kicks in and the Sony 4K Projector does its lens shifting magic. He concludes, “Overall, the client loves the entire room and proudly shows it off to visitors and enjoys spending their downtime watching movies and sports with their friends and family. In fact, we often look at the settings of the projector when we visit and chuckle when we see how many hours the projector has been on for – it’s certainly getting used.” Just Add Popcorn www.justaddpopcorn.co.uk

ISE REVIEW
GOING DUTCH EI presents just some of the highlights from this year’s Integrated Systems Europe (ISE), the last one to be held at the much loved, but definitely out-grown, RAI Centre in Amsterdam.
the U3 weatherproof controller. Featuring an electronic ink display, the durable remote uses inductive charging and wireless programming updates, allowing the unit to be completely sealed.
RTI used a phrase that emphasis an industry wide phenomenon as commercial and residential markets continue to merge, the automation platform describes its approach as ‘resimercial’. The company also concentrated on the amount of customisation now available as standard across its offering, picking up on another strong trend at the show that systems need to offer installers and customers opportunities to deliver more customisation during the life of the system and not just at installation and commissioning phases. For commercial projects, RTI showcased the VXP-82 All-In-One Presentation System and VXUSC Conferencing and Collaboration System. RTI also showed the new CP-16i Cool Power amplifier in addition to the flagship T4x and weatherproof U3 remote controls and RTiQ Intelligent Remote Monitoring. RTI’s CP-16i expands the company’s line of audio distribution systems and is compatible with virtually any other system. RTI says the unit delivers 100W of audiophile-grade sound to 16 channels and bridgeable audio outputs for increased power. The unit features thermal overload and overcurrent monitoring, while Class-D amplification ensures efficient heat dissipation and low power consumption. Available in rack-mount or freestanding options, the amplifier only requires one rack space. The new T4x features a sleek design that offers strong ergonomics, a high-resolution 4in capacitive touchscreen and programmable softtouch buttons. The T4x includes grip sensors, Wi-Fi and dual RF. For environments that are too harsh for standard remote controls, RTI offers
Control4’s main theme was also the pursuit of more customisation options ‘right out of the box’. The company also took the opportunity to showcase some of the brands now in the family since its purchase by SnapAV. For control, one of the main focus areas was the new Neeo remote driven by the company’s acquisition of the Neeo brand. Shipped last November, Control4 says it is, so far, the fastest selling product it has ever made. Neeo is the first Control4 handheld remote to combine hard buttons and a touchscreen and offers faster access to the things customers use most. The remote underlines that across the board control systems have really made more effort on their handhelds, all of the ones on show were considerable improvemtents on what has gone before as better ergonomics mix with a style of remote that is more familiar to end users, but also offers more power than a standard remote layout for say a cable box. Another ISE theme was offering ‘only when wanted’ voice control at the touch of a button, the Control4 Neeo has it via Alexa and Google Assistant and these also migrate across the rest of any Control4 system. Neeo is available in either silver or black finishes and ships with a charging station and lasts up to five days on a single charge. The platform has also expanded its ‘Intercom Anywhere’ approach to more third-party devices so users can make and receive calls from Control4 touch screens and mobile devices. Intercom Anywhere now also supports multi-family installations, where a centralised doorbell can be used by multiple housing units, to direct a call to the appropriate tenant.

The company also highlighted the CA-10 controller designed for large installations where redundancy and high-availability are required to meet customer expectations. Getting a big push were some SnapAV parts of the family including the Signature by Episode custom install speaker line offering dealers 32 models across three series, one- and two-step installation options, seven optional cradle accessories that can be paired with preconstruction brackets, back boxes, and an assortment of grille options. Other SnapAV brands opened up for global consumption include Binary Media over IP (MOIP) video distribution products, Luma surveillance cameras and NVRs and the Strong line of racks, mounts and accessories. URC was also underlining the advantages of a reimagined remote now shipping with the inclusion of built-in button operated Alexa voice control and its own charging dock. The TRC-1480 offers a 2.4in touchscreen, two-way quick connect WiFi (2.4 or 5 GHz) and a built-in microphone and speaker for the voice control aspect. URC says the TRC-1480 features endless possibilities for controlling everything – select the source(s) to play in the zones of the home or commercial facility, dim the lights, adjust motorised shades, view who is at the front door, adjusting thermostats, unlock/ lock the front door, interact with Amazon Alexa, or Siri to search and control AV experiences. Also underlining increased customisation options, residential and commercial installers now have more options using URC’s Accelerator 2.0 programming software. A new feature called Custom Device Layouts, allows dealers to customise the UI for each device with a modular button layout, combining features and functions on one page of the UI, add live camera feed and a favourite channels pop up window for homeowners. Crestron used the show to unveil the compact MC4-R-I control system expanding the reach of the Crestron Home platform to small, midsize and MDU projects. A secure, high performance, 4-Series control
system for the Crestron Home platform, the MC4R-I is designed for flexibility. Powered via PoE, it has a full complement of built-in control ports and includes an infiNET EX wireless gateway. It can be surface- or rack-mounted, and its small size allows installation behind a TV. Crestron also highlighted more ‘out of the box’ customisation via the Crestron Home platform, designed to offer Crestron functionality but with faster and easier deployment. The company also showcased an eyebrow raising amount of integration with third-party devices. Perhaps the biggest indicator of how the market has changed, Crestron was until recently considered the most propriety of propriety systems, but the brand has embraced the idea of wide compatibility and shifted as the market has demanded less of a walled garden approach. Crestron Home has support for standard control protocols, such as DALI and BACnet, but also now offers partnerships with 2N, CoolAutomation, Jandy, Pentair, Hayward, Sonos, Lutron and Domotz. Crestron Home also works with products including Apple HomeKit devices, Amazon Alexa devices, Google Assistant virtual personal assistant and Sonos. Smart TV support now delivers direct access to streaming services, such as Netflix and Hulu, from the Crestron mobile app, touch screens and remotes. There is also the ability to password protect sensitive subsystems, such as security, home access and cameras. Savant was also highlighting the evolution of its interface, offering more customisation opportunities in layout and for different user profiles. Its main remote has also evolved with more personalisation available to installers and end users. Pretty much all the automation platforms now recognise that users want some level of personalisation like they experience with their other smart devices, without it the home automation system seems less advanced than the phones and tablets they use every day. Savant is another company to offer ‘only when you want it’ voice control on its remote, offering

some strong control and content search options. The main control App interface can now also be thrown up onto the customer’s TV, making it a control hub. Savant also showcased what it describes as the world’s first smart home controlling LCR soundbar. Leveraging WiSA technology to deliver high-resolution 24-bit digital audio wirelessly to surround and subwoofer channels, the unit also acts as a control hub for single rooms of as part of a wider system. The 55in three-channel LCR sound bar, can partner with optional powered surround speakers and the Smart Audio Nano 1X subwoofer and delivers access to all the most popular streaming services. The Savant Pro App provides easy setup and customisation of shortcuts to favourite music and artists. Built into the sound bar is compatibility with Savant’s on-screen user interface so streaming services are easily accessed as well as the up to six zones of audio and two zones of video along with whole-house control of lighting, energy management, climate control and other smart devices.
THERE’S SOMEBODY AT THE DOOR!
Attractive access and communication control was a big feature at the show and a company that has been on a bit of a charge in this area is 2N. The company was showcasing its abilities inside and outside of the home with products like the 2N LTE Verso for the exterior and the 2N Indoor Talk for the interior. The 2N LTE Verso combines minimum installation costs with a full-feature set. Using LTE technology means no other cable apart from a power supply is needed during installation. The main unit with HD camera can be accompanied by RFID reader, Bluetooth or fingerprint reader supporting modules so installers can mix and match for each project. The unit is suitable for retro fit, renovation and new build and offers secure configuration via the cloud. Inside the home, the 2N Indoor Talk answering unit comes into play offering contemporary design and familiar style graphics. The aesthetic appearance is achieved by using a glass surface and striking backlighting of its icons that ape those found regularly during user’s on-line experiences. Also available is the 2N Indoor Compact, an indoor answering unit designed especially for the residential market, installed by connecting a single UTP cable and configured via a web interface. 2N says users will be impressed by the minimalist design, tempered glass surface, 4.3in colour display and intuitive controls. Going up a notch performance-wise, the 2N Indoor Touch 2.0 answering unit offers reliable video door communication and the Android OS, delivers more power via a simple user interface. All of the products are made in the Czech Republic
and can integrate with Control4, Crestron and Savant. The company is also promising a new 10in in door version later this year for high-end residential and commercial uses.
AUDIO AND HOME CINEMA
Canadian brand Totem’s CI range is distributed in the UK by Redline and the duo chose to highlight the new Solution Bars. Part of Totem’s Tribe series, the Solution Bars family comes in two variants that deliver strong aesthetics to match with super slim stylish TVs, coupled to the company’s signature wide dispersion, accurate phase coherency and detailed audio performance. A passive design means superior off-board amplification can be used to get more impressive results. The Tribe Duo Solution Bar is a two-channel design in a sealed cabinet, while the Tribe Trio Solution Bar is a three-channel LCR in a ported enclosure. Offering long-throw 4in woofers, both models have been created to work with screens 65in and larger and their low-profile design and included flush mount non-resonant wall bracket make them ideal for on-wall installations. Should it be desirable to place either product on furniture or a mantle, adhesive backed sound isolation feet are provided. Each has closely grouped inputs and wire channel management for a clean, simple connection and are available in white and black satin finishes. An average efficiency of 90dB and a 6ohm load make the Solutions Bars easy to drive and a viable option for a wide range of systems and applications. Phase consistent from any position or location, Solution Bars offer ease of placement within the room. UK maker, Lithe Audio, had four new products including the Wi-Fi PRO, an all-in-one ceiling speaker, a new wireless Micro sub, an In-wall Dual Zone audio system and an updated version of the company’s popular Bluetooth in-ceiling speaker now with Bluetooth 5.0. Equipped with Airplay2, the new wireless Micro sub (17cm cubed) is a discrete solution that can be easily connected to the Lithe Audio multiroom audio system and boost the bass. This speaker can be fully integrated with smart home systems and works with other speakers equipped with Airplay2 or Google cast and has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built in. Aimed at the hospitality sector, Lithe Audio also introduced the In-wall Dual Zone hotel audio system with Bluetooth 5.0 and DAB+ radio bringing the brand’s improved high-quality speaker sound to hotel rooms or in fact any single room application. The company’s popular wireless in-ceiling Bluetooth speakers introduced the concept of being powered by the lighting circuit, simplifying

installation. ISE witnessed the launch of a new version with Bluetooth 5.0, a new 30m range (compared to 10m on previous models) and an Aptx Low latency protocol for seamless wireless syncing with TVs. The event also saw the introduction of Lithe Wi-Fi PRO for ultimate connectivity, offering wireless multiroom audio or hardwire connections. Powered by the lighting circuit or via PoE, the speaker is WISA compatible for wireless surround sound and other connections include Airplay2, Google cast, Bluetooth (4.0), optical input and ethernet. Meridian also took part in a demonstration of high-performance home cinema in partnership with Barco. Offering a 9.4 cinema set up, the room featured the latest Meridian loudspeakers and subwoofers (DSP750 and the DSW.2). Asked why not an immersive set up in Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, apart from the difficulties of creating such a set up in show conditions, Meridian was just one of the companies arguing that whilst immersive technologies are great, sometimes, its worth thinking about less speakers, but better speakers. Often trying to hit a particular configuration can impact on the quality of the speakers available if there are budget constraints, so in those instances going for less speakers but of a higher quality,
50 MARCH 2020
can produce the best outcome. As the brand’s highest performing architectural loudspeaker yet, the DSP750 in-wall digital active loudspeaker, can of course do either very well. The room also featured Meridian’s Reference 861v8 processor with Meridian Room Correction. With a full 96/24 signal path all the way through the chain, the 861v8 is designed to maximise the resolution of UHD content. The hi-res audio from the Kaleidescape UHD movie server being used was first reclocked by the Meridian UHD722, then upsampled to 96/24 resolution before being transmitted to the 861v8 via Meridian’s proprietary zero-jitter Meridian HighResolution MHR link. The UHD video was sent on to the Barco Residential Bragi via the UHD722’s 18.2Gbps HDMI output.
Trinnov used the event to highlight the delivery of DTS:X Pro to owners as a free-of-charge update to all new and existing owners of Altitude32 and Altitude16 processors. Trinnov also demonstrated DTS:X Pro in its purposebuilt 15 seat 15.3.10 channel immersive audio system. Also featured were co-exhibitors Procella Audio and Kaleidescape. The upgrade to include DTS:X Pro is available through an online download that is typically completed in under 15 minutes. Prior to the introduction of DTS:X Pro, DTS:X for the home was limited to only 11 main channels plus LFE, typically in a 7.1.4 configuration. Trinnov’s implementation of DTS:X Pro enables discrete rendering of the full DTS:X complement of 30.2 channels, up to the channel capacity of each individual processor.
Waterfall introduced a new design approach for its in-wall subwoofer in the form of the SUB IW FLEX200. The maker says listeners will be able to enjoy crisp and clear bass within this 9.9cm deep in-wall product. The maker says the sub features a new design approach close to a designed radiator with its paintable front cover, offering a more aesthetically pleasing in-room presence than regular grills.
StormAudio also had a big show with the launch of the MK2 line of its immersive audio processors, a significant up-grade ushering in many new features and abilities. As well as getting a full run-down of all the new specs, show visitors got a chance to hear MK2 in action via a demo in partnership with Alcons Audio using the ISP.32 Digital MK2 in a full digital 11.4.8 cinema set up. The demo was another opportunity at the show to experience DTS:X Pro. Offered in a new cooler industrial design,

MK2 offers 16, 24 or 32-channel analogue preamp/processors, a fully loaded digital AES 32-channel version as well as 8 and 16-channel amps. Along with existing abilities, MK2 adds DTS:X Pro, IMAX Enhanced, Auro-3D Version 2, eARC HDMI card, 24-channel (13.1.10 Dolby Atmos and DTS:X Pro) decoding, rapid codec switching (as much as 50% improvement), and advanced bass management including the recently introduced Dirac Live Bass Control module carried across the new 4.0 firmware package. Another unique feature on the processors is StormAudio’s own 7+2 eARC HDMI card which delivers quicker, reliable switching with total HDMI2.0b/ HDCP2.2 support. Distributed in the UK by Pulse Cinemas, the brand was one stop on the now regular ISE tours offered by the distributor. Check out pages 26 and 27 of this issue for a full round up of the tour. The Harman Luxury Audio Group went for a full-on JBL Synthesis cinema demonstration at the show. The fresh line of JBL Synthesis electronics for 2020 is designed to once again firmly establish the brand as a turnkey solution to the home cinema market. The SDR-35 Immersive Surround Sound AV Receiver, SDP-55 Immersive Surround Sound Processor, and JBL Synthesis SDA2200 and SDA-7120 Class G Amplifiers with Dante, have been designed to operate at the top end of AV and cinema performance, but also offer value and flexibility for a broad range of custom install applications and are available via distributor Karma AV. Taking the prize for the wackiest launch at the show, pro audio brand L-Acoustics offered its first foray into the domestic arena with its ‘Island Prestige’ concept. Created by main company off-shoot L-Acoustics Creations, this concept is a self-contained, ‘personal auditorium’. Basically the concept offers a sort of room within a room which has comfortable adjustable seating, within a circular construction with speakers built-into the walls, oh and it spins round so users can face
a cinema screen or look out of the window, just listening to music. Island Prestige features thirteen front speakers, five rear speakers and two subwoofers, precision manufactured and aligned to deliver accurate, detailed audio to listeners relaxing in its central lounge area. Overhead speakers can be added, if required. The system can reproduce the proprietary BluSpace audio standard, designed to match human hearing spatial resolution and bring full, live concert dynamics at all audible frequencies.
designed for drywall, plasterboard and retrofit applications representing a new approach for plasterboard application. The speaker gets installed by simply replacing a small section of plasterboard, attached only to the wall and not the studwork, therefore no special framing is required. The speaker ‘moves’ with the drywall when the studs or floor-joists flex and twist, assuring that the finish will not crack. Once filled, taped, feathered and painted it becomes fully invisible. The speaker can also be installed as a post-plaster retrofit product.
Artcoustic chose to highlight the Performance A6, the latest addition to the Artcoustic collection, described as a true game changer - especially for larger cinema rooms where seating is positioned across multiple rows and more than one level. To achieve the high sensitivity needed for an immersive cinema experience, Artcoustic uses its line array technology to create a focused ‘beam’, projecting the sound directly at the listener. The smaller size of the cabinet and adjustable angles allows each individual module to be laser aligned to different locations in the audience, ensuring everybody gets the same detailed sound regardless of where they are sitting.
PMC unveiled no less than four new models in its custom installation series. The ci30, ci45, ci65 and ci90 complete the offering in this series of slimline, high-performance on-wall and in-wall custom installation loudspeakers, following the launch of the ci140 and ci140sub at CEDIA 2019. The ci30, the smallest in range, is designed for discreet applications and may be installed in-ceiling, in or on-wall. Using a larger cabinet provides the ci45 with all the speed and power of the ci30, but provides it with a greater image depth, bass extension and dynamism. By adding a second, long throw, 130mm bass driver, the ci65 creates greater slam and presence, with increased headroom and extension. This model is suitable for use in medium to large sized theatres for all channels in a multi-speaker system. With standard wall construction in mind, the ci90 slim is encased in a long slim cabinet, 280mm (11in) wide, which fits neatly between studwork to provide more flexibility as a retrofit option.
Another company keen on the great outdoors, Sonance offered its Patio Series. Distributed in the UK by Habitech, the system is designed for smaller outdoor spaces demanding an even, balanced audio coverage and strong performance. The speakers have been designed to blend in and be comfortable to listen to. The Patio Series system of four satellite speakers and one in-ground subwoofer gives integrators the ability to accomplish this in spaces up to 100 sqm. The landscape lighting-like speaker housings and the textured brown finish allow Patio Series to be hidden amongst the natural elements of the landscape, blending into the surroundings. The system’s four staked satellite speakers, each deploying a 3.5in (89mm) anodised aluminium cone driver with a Santoprene surround, are joined by a subwoofer featuring an 8in (203mm) dual voice coil polypropylene cone and Santoprene surround driver for impressive output in intimate courtyard or patio settings. Show regular, Amina, showed its newest EDGE and Mobius models. These incorporate the company’s newest Excelsior exciter, which brings increased power handling and frequency response. AMINA’s new EDGE-i sound panels are
As well as showcasing its impressively large choice of CI speakers, Monitor Audio demonstrated its IMS-4 Music Streamer. Featuring BluOS technology, the slimline IMS-4 can stream to four separate zones and its BluOS Controller app offers flexibility, including streaming from music services, easy access to music libraries and voice control through a smart device. Accessed through the app, or one of the many supported integrated control systems, multiple IMS-4 Music Streamers can be integrated with other BluOS devices to provide up to 64 zones of music, with each zone able to play together in sync or play different streams to separate zones. And, BluOS allows streaming of lossless music up to 24-bit/192kHz to every room in a home network.

NETWORKING, CONNECTIONS AND SIGNAL MANAGEMENT
Kordz unveiled a new PRS Series CAT6A Network Patch Cord, a stranded 28 American Wire Gauge (AWG) U/FTP Category 6A shielded cable, suitable for 10 Gbps and POE++ rated networks. Kordz has custom-designed the RJ45 connector with a robust, anti-corrosion gold plated material. The result is a more secure latching tab with a 15.2mm cable bend radius. The tab itself is rated to 2,000+ 180O bend cycles which will minimise the risk of connector failure, help create a tidier AV rack and save installation time and cost for integrators. The 28AWG oxygen free copper conductors and solid extrusion also offer maximum twist protection for greater cord flexibility and signal integrity. In addition, this network patch cord reportedly has the thinnest and most flexible profile on the market, making installation faster and easier whilst still fully complying with the strict CAT6A ANSI/TIA 568.2-D standard. NETGEAR used the event to showcase its partnership with Savant, offering compatibility with the full suite of the company’s networking solutions. The companies say this arrangement will make best-in-class products and services available to integrators, enabling them to improve efficiency for any job size while creating new opportunities by offering superior networking capabilities along with exclusive, co-engineered solutions for the CI market. The objective of the alliance is to create networking solutions that are optimised for the Savant smart home ecosystem, streamlining design, installation and service processes.

Protection and improvement management from SurgeX Squid
SurgeX, distributed in the UK by RGB Communications, introduced the new Squid power management device at ISE, a product design that packs an array of power quality features into a single, compact chassis to fulfil the needs of commercial and high-quality resi projects. Squid is designed to streamline installation, combining multiple features, including boxed networked control and analytics of AC and DC, front-end protection with SurgeX’s patented Multi-Stage surge suppression technology, as well as feature rich and easy to understand monitoring and management capabilities. Squid includes two 5V USB port inputs for charging and network troubleshooting, eight outputs, four of which are traditional controlled and monitored IEC receptacles, and four are DC so integrators can eliminate the need for wall acne or a two-box solution. By using a relay-based system, the AC and DC ports can be controlled, the device can be monitored, and can be easily integrated into third party control systems. Available in three models for (2) 12V, (2) 24V, and a combination of the two, integrators can use Squid to power spaces and keep them running smoothly with preventative maintenance, mounting the small device in the rack, behind a flat panel, mounted under a table, or integrated into a table hatch.
Lots of interesting stuff this year on the HDBaseT Alliance stand as the platform is making a strong play to fight for its place against competition from systems like AV over IP. In the main, the message was the power delivered by HDBaseT Spec 3.0 which the Alliance says is the first in the industry to enable long-distance transmission of uncompressed 4K@60 4:4:4, allowing unparalleled value and the best possible performance for your installations. One of the highlights was Pulse-Eight neo matrix products contributing to a clever demo showing how fast and responsive gaming can be over HDBaseT. Another stand placed a long way from the HDBaseT area shared the same gameplay in real time. Also on the HDBaseT stand, MSolutions introduced and demonstrated new AV over IP testing capabilities that address emerging signal and infrastructure test needs in AV environments via the MS-TestPro as well as the abilities of its HDMI Cable Tester module. MASTERS SESSION
(L-R) Shirley Tetteh (guitar) and Cassie Kinoshi (band leader/saxophone)
MQA AND BLUESOUND PRESENT ‘THE MASTER SESSIONS’ Bluesound, premium audio brand and MQA, the pioneering music technology company, teamed up recently with two influential music organisations, Jazz re:freshed and British Underground, to present ‘The Master Sessions’. The Master Sessions is a series of live concerts, streamed in real time using MQA sound to over 100 audio retailers around the world through Bluesound’s premium hi-res audio players. The UK based event sent live music to dealers in the UK, Europe and South Africa. An audience of music fans and journalists were invited to share in a live audio experience like no other, featuring some of the UK’s leading jazz talent performing from a world renowned studio location. For the London session EI was invited to, the venue was the highly impressive British Grove studio, famously owned by British music icon, Mark Knopfler. The place is an absolute candy store for anyone interested in recorded music and live music for that matter. Studio 1’s control room is based around a huge Neve 88R console, which is cutting-edge, but the studio is also home to some older, but no less distinguished residents. The 1960s REDD.51 console is thought to be the only one left in the world and there is also a stunning 1950s Fairchild 670 in the room. The studio’s EMI TG12345 console, was originally commissioned for the EMI studios in Lagos, Nigeria, but has found a second home
at British Grove. These beautiful machines are not museum pieces however, as studio staff informed EI that all of them get used, it just depends on what sound is required by the artist/producer working in the Studio 1, as the venue, as well as being home to all of Mark’s work such as albums like Kill To Get Crimson and Get Lucky, is open for other artists to use and some pretty impressive names have done just that. Nick Cave, U2, Roger Waters, Sting, Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs, Jamie Cullum and Goldfrapp have all graced Studio 1 in the past. The studio has been created with a no compromise approach, so was the perfect place for what this very special event had planned, namely getting some of the UK’s most talented Jazz musicians to play live in Studio 1 and then broadcast it live to UK dealers who where holding listening sessions in their premises and to the lucky few who were gathered up-stairs in another part of the complex to listen to the performance via some Bluesound equipment using MQA technology. Those at the event listened to the live performance from Studio 1 via Bluesound Powernode 2i, Bowers & Wilkins 703 S2 speakers all controlled through BluOS app on an iPad. A dedicated microsite, TheMasterSessions. com, has been published with full details on the participants and activities to find out more.
EVENT OBJECTIVES
The collaboration brought together a partnership of experts and tastemakers in the music and technology worlds with two shared objectives: • To promote skilled artists and help them reach a wider audience • To articulate the power of pioneering audio technology and create better listening experiences. Following a panel discussion led by British Underground’s Crispin Parry with Cassie Kinoshi and Shirley Tetteh from SEED Ensemble and Co-Founder and Co-Chief Executive of Jazz re:freshed, Justin McKenzie, a movement that has played a pivotal role in the emergence of the UK’s current vibrant jazz scene since the early 2000s, the performance got under way. It really was a highly impressive demonstration of how cutting-edge digital technology can marry up with the best musicians around to deliver new and exciting experiences for fans. Imagine being able to sit at home and listen live to a studio session or concert in highquality audio, - well you don’t have to imagine - this event proved it’s entirely possible. There is also something extra in the audio, a feeling of ‘presence’ not found on normal recordings or live streams. The music feels very real and

the listener experiences a closeness to those playing, it really is very pleasant. “As accomplished live musicians, the idea that high resolution audio technologies like Bluesound and MQA can offer a studio experience at home was something both SEED Ensemble and Theon Cross were keen to support,” says Justin McKenzie. “They believe, as we do, that technologies like these bring artists closer to their fans by literally delivering the sound of the studio.” Crispin Parry, CEO, British Underground, a creative production company that produces international showcases and strategic development projects in music and the arts, adds, “It was fantastic to be part of The Master Sessions live audio stream with SEED Ensemble at British Grove studios. It’s a pleasure working with MQA and Bluesound, and it’s great to see what a creative partnership between Arts Council England-supported organisations and music technology companies can deliver.” Whilst Yvette Griffith, Exec Director, Jazz
re:freshed, comments, “We were proud to be a partner in The Master Sessions European livestream, presenting 10 piece ensemble, SEED. Working with MQA and Bluesound’s technology provides us with the opportunity to convey the detail and quality of sound in UK jazz and ensure its reach continues to be worldwide.” Of course, it would be unthinkable not to have the thoughts of Bob Stuart, Founder, MQA and co-founder of Meridian Audio, who says, “Through The Master Sessions partnership, we’re enabling audiences at Bluesound dealerships around the world to hear incredible live performances, in the highest quality audio and in real time, from some of the most exciting talent on the British jazz scene. MQA’s promise is: ‘Take MeThere – to the original performance, wherever you listen’ and when listeners hear MQA Live audio, they tell us they feel like they are in the venue. When included in HD video, MQA Live audio transforms the concert experience.” Final word goes to June Ip, VP Marketing,
Mercury Prize nominees, SEED Ensemble, performed live from British Grove studios on 5 February for The Master Sessions, a collaboration between MQA, Bluesound, Jazz re:freshed and British Underground. ESSENTIAL REVIEW: STEALTH ACOUSTICS STINGRAY 83
STINGRAY 83
STINGRAY! STINGRAY! Mother Nature is a constant challenge for alfresco audio and AV installs in the UK, none more so than for outdoor loudspeakers. Could Stealth Acoustic’s StingRay 83 be the answer? Richard Stevenson braves the storms to find out. Torrential rain, frost and snow in the winter, high UV and toasty 30+ degrees heat in the summer and a selection of errant wildlife in between makes being an outdoor speaker a tough job. Across a variety of outdoor speaker designs over the years, I have suffered water ingress wrecking drivers and electronics, cabinets going from white to yellow in one balmy summer and blue-tits nesting in my bass ports. Most of these issues derive from manufacturers simply trying to make a traditional loudspeaker design mother-nature proof. And we know what Jeff Goldblum has to say about that. Enter US company Stealth Acoustics’

Stingray 83. This is the flagship of the brand’s innovative outdoor loudspeaker range, designed to deliver audiophile quality whatever the weather. Designed from the ground up as an IP68 outdoor product, it looks like nothing else on the market, being a flat panel fronted, sealed enclosure remarkably similar in dimensions to an early generation 24in LCD TV. With no bass port and a 50cm captive cable tail, the design is IP68 rated, which is capable of being immersed in 1m of water for over 64 hours. That might even keep out British drizzle. Yet it is not a flat-panel loudspeaker at all. Inside the UV protected marine-grade plastic cabinet it is a three-way full-range loudspeaker with 8inch woofer, 30mm midrange driver and 25mm tweeter coupled to the speaker’s unique FidelityGlass solid-front radiating surface. Unlike vibration-panel technologies such as NXT’s Distributed Mode Loudspeaker (DML),
the direct coupled approach means you can see and feel the front panel moving, giving it much higher SPL and wider frequency response required for quality sound in larger, open spaces. The panel has a fairly uniform 170° radiating pattern both horizontally and vertically making it equally useful for commercial paging and background audio applications. Using pistonic drivers has also resulted in a very healthy specification sheet, boasting 160W RMS / 320W peak maximum power handling and 40Hz to 20Hz (@-10dBb) frequency response. The efficiency is relatively humble at 83dB, but the easy 8-ohm load and sizeable power handling means it will comfortably produce in excess of 100dB @1m. The internal crossover features two independent self-resetting protection circuits should the end-user party a little too hard.
ESSENTIAL REVIEW: STEALTH ACOUSTICS STINGRAY 83
INSTALLATION
The curved back of the StingRay 83 provides horizontal and vertical flat areas, both parallel and angled and the units come supplied with a seriously heavyweight mounting bar. This 7mm thick, powder coated steel plate secures to the speaker mounts with two screws and there are two keyways for the wall mount, placing the speaker tight up against the wall no matter how it is oriented. The mounting can be a little tricky to get the keyways secure to stop vibration against the wall, simply because you can’t get a driver onto the wall screws with the speakers in place. Yet the result is that in flat-to-wall configuration, the speaker protrudes just over 100mm from the wall. Cosmetically that is super-neat and a fraction of the size of an 8in traditional cabinet speaker on a U-bracket for example. With a 170° dispersion pattern it is questionable whether you would ever need to use the tilted mounting option in a domestic environment either, making this a cosmetically very clean solution. For alternative installations, Stealth Acoustics offer a trio of optional mounting accessories covering an aluminium ground stake, a traditional U-bracket, and a swivel wall mount. A round profile UV-resistant cable exits a gland-sealed port on a recess in the rear
panel. Its 50cm length would be a little short for permanent install with the cable running through the wall. Stealth provides a couple of water-resistant crimp connectors in the box to attach to install speaker cable, although they were too small a gauge for the heavyduty (audiophile) speaker cable running out to our patio. A small IP67 junction box could be hidden behind the curve of the cabinet though.
PERFORMANCE
Given the StingRay 83 looks like a flat panel vibration technology speaker, you might be anticipating the same, rather compressed bandwidth and limited output. Not so! With a pair of StingRay 83s mounted flat to an outside wall, the sound is immediately robust, loud and delivered with frankly stunning bass for a speaker in an open environment. While the mounting configuration here does leverage plenty of boundary gain, it is clear Stealth is aiming to deliver genuinely engaging outdoor sound here, not just a background filler. The frequency response is far from ruler flat but the balance is ideal for an open environment with a solid lift from 60Hz-120Hz for extra bass clout, and a gentle lift again over 8kHz to add a little sparkle which can so often be lost in an outdoor setting. The relatively humble efficiency does mean they like a bit of power but that is immediately rewarded with impressive
scale and a punchy, dynamic sound. The result is extremely impressive sound, with sweet midrange vocals, good extension and plenty of energy through the useable volume range. Its 103dB maximum output is well controlled and, while not the loudest outdoor speaker we have tried, a stereo pair is likely to be more than enough for most UK residential garden installs. Even without a ceiling and sidewalls to help boost very low frequencies, deep LF output digs down to below 50Hz. That is mighty impressive given the cabinet’s flat, shallow shape, nonported design and relatively compact internal volume. It is also more than enough to create convincing bass, engaging output with most audio material from pop to rap. If you need more bass output or LFE for outdoor AV, Stealth’s StingRay 430 is a matching passive subwoofer with two 8in drivers coupled to flat panel radiators on all four vertical sides… yes, eight drivers. Priced at £1,375 each, the StingRay83 is an excellent outdoor install loudspeaker, combining discreet design, outstanding environmental protection and exceptional sound performance comfortably on par with the very best traditional ‘weather-resistant’ speaker designs. Now just the homeless blue-tits to deal with.

SMART THINKING
CYBER ATTACK: NOT IF BUT WHEN Next to speed, network security is the issue of our age, so Habitech’s Justin Martin Lawrence has a simple plan to keep the bad actors at bay. You’d have to be living on a desert island to escape the growing tumult around cybersecurity. Already this year the big Travelex attack and the recent scandal involving the hacking of a phone belonging to Amazon chief, Jeff Bezos, have forced the issue of data vulnerability into the public’s imagination. And there’s genuine horror beneath the headlines, not just involving the financial costs and reputational damage, but the apparent ease with which the attacks were carried out. Experts believe that the ‘Sodinokibi’ ransomware assault on Travelex, which caused the company to take down sites in 30 countries, exposed, potentially, up to 5GB of personal data and cost $millions in lost business and
60 MARCH 2020
GDPR fines, hacked the Windows Active Directory through an unpatched VPN bug in as little as ‘20 minutes’. Meanwhile Mr Bezos’ phone secretly began sharing ‘huge amounts of data’ through malware contained in an otherwise innocent MP4 video file sent via WhatsApp. The shocking reality is that once a security flaw is listed on some dark directory, hackers are through it as fast as you can say ‘apocalypse’. When this happens, they can take control of everything on any device. What’s more, they’re not just picking the biggest fruit: cyber criminals are coming for your data as well. Still sitting comfortably? Here are some further figures and facts. Cybercrime is the world’s biggest criminal growth industry, bigger in value than the global drug trade. Network attacks more than doubled in the first half of 2019, compromising up to 4bn private records. IoT devices, proliferating in homes and vulnerable through vendor application layers, are emerging as the Achilles heel of residential networks. Ironically, nearly half of all network attacks target security camera systems. Ethical
hacking experts have reported thousands of Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks delivered by bots capable of issuing 50,000 HTTP requests per second through hacked internet-connected CCTV cameras. Scariest of all: cybercrime is, technically, an easy digital smash and grab.
A VIRTUAL PLAYGROUND FOR HACKERS
Security pros use specialised engines such as shodan.io and zoomeye to spot and test vulnerabilities in webcams, databases and IoT devices, but anyone with access to the internet can do the same. So if you think all cyber criminals must be evil geniuses, think again. Unsecured networks are vulnerable to anyone armed with free hacking software available by browsing Google. And when you realise that most CI devices with IP connections use simple APIs that require no authentication, and that home routers and switches cannot provide the bandwidth and features required for reliable security, you don’t need to be a Travelex or a
SMART THINKING
Jeff Bezos to appreciate how easily your data, and your customers’ online bank accounts, credit card details and private information could be exposed…in seconds. Besides, the hacker’s IQ is immaterial if your client logs-in to a fake portal disguised as legit, or signs up for a spoof ‘free Wi-Fi’ offer designed to steal personal data. Theirs will join millions of other ‘combos’ on vast ‘stuffing lists’ in circulation on hacking forums. In January 2019, such a list was discovered containing almost 2.7bn records including 773mn unique email addresses/ password combos. And because criminals know that people re-use passwords (believe it or not the word ‘password’ itself is still deployed with alarming regularity), this vast record, dubbed ‘Collection #1’, will be used in countless attempts to hijack their other accounts.
TIME TO LOCK AWAY THE VALUABLES
Against this menacingly volatile security backdrop, CI businesses should make every effort to build networks that are, as far as
possible, secure and resilient to cyberattack. Every integrator should install a plan to protect their sensitive data, including customer information and passwords, because they’re obligated to defend interests on both sides of the contract. After all, it’s not good for business to get sued by Mr. Big Guns customer when his adventures on Ashley Madison go south, or someone uses ‘password123’. Straight away you can do these simple things for free. Protect your devices and accounts with strong passwords (distinct for each). The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) suggests using three random words, and deploying two-factor authentication (2fa) wherever possible as an extra barrier to attacks. Consider using a password manager (like 1Password, Dashlane, LastPass). These services generate unbreakable codes for all accounts, while you remember one. Always accept automatic updates from your software vendors as these invariably include security patches. Factory reset and delete data from all unwanted devices, and don’t use public Wi-
Fi without a VPN. Don’t open or redirect router ports because open ports get hacked. Segregate your client’s network with discrete VLANs (for instance network devices in one, IoT devices in another); divide Wi-Fi into subnets with their own passwords so if a guest device is compromised it can be contained (many managed wireless vendors, including Ruckus, provide client isolation and passwords that can be set by the home owner to automatically expire). Aside from these free measures, you can raise your networks to max resilience by investing in and subscribing to globally proven firewall/ router technology from the likes of WatchGuard. The firewall in your router and antivirus on your computer won’t be enough to track a growing and rapidly moving cybercrime wave, so choose a proprietary security solution to do it for you. When you have ‘skin’ in the cybersecurity game, it’s the best way not to lose it.
Cybercrime is the world’s biggest criminal growth industry, bigger in value than the global drug trade.

CONTENT IS KING
A DEMO
This month, Paul Cummin, Owner and Sales Manager of Artcoustic UK, tells all about some of his favourite demo clips. Cinema demonstrations are the most fun part of what we do. This is the ‘test drive’ part, where the client is, hopefully, already really excited about having an amazing system in their own home. This is usually a room where the family will spend a lot of time together, inviting friends over to enjoy the latest movies, or big sporting events, TV moments, gaming and more. This is hopefully about to become ‘their new favourite room’ (phrase from Simon Grattidge at Sinemas, he’s spot on!). We want potential clients to be excited, and thinking on an emotional level. After all, no one ‘needs’ a cinema, this is a fun room for any family to have, so the more fun we can make it, the more they’ll see the value in what’s being offered. It all starts with a great looking room. In my view, too many cinema systems are too masculine, and aimed at the ‘man of the house’. The influence of ‘man caves’ is still too large in
62 MARCH 2020
our industry, with cinema rooms being defined by furniture that wouldn’t normally be seen in beautiful homes. If the demo starts with the family loving the fabric on the seats, and the look and feel of the whole room, then you’re on to a good start. We try to spend plenty of time talking about the client’s room before going on to play anything. If we can discuss seating layouts, and explain how their room will differ practically and aesthetically from our demo room, then the clients will relate better to it. Then, we play some clips… We try to play clips near the beginning of movies. This serves two things. Firstly, it respects the movie and doesn’t ruin anything for the clients. It also has the emotional benefit of using a filmmaker’s ability to draw you in to something. The opening of movies are specifically designed to grab your intrigue, and make you want to know what happens next. Stopping the clip and having the client say, “I want to see the rest of that!”, is a great sign. Reading the clients is key. Play the right thing for the right people. Your favourite clip
of an incredible and distressing war scene (Hacksaw Ridge, Overlord for example) may look and sound awesome (they do!), but don’t play it to someone that will get distressed by it. These are fun rooms, we don’t want to make the client upset! If the client seems like they’d be up for that sort of thing, then of course, crank it up and go for it. We have two clips we often lead with, depending upon the clients. A Monster Calls has a wonderful opening scene, is a 12A certificate and sounds amazing. That is an experience that grabs attention and gets respect immediately. If the client can cope with it, then the opening of 10 Cloverfield Lane has become a classic for Artcoustic demos. The dynamic range is incredible, and we often begin by just apologising at the beginning. Everyone jumps, which breaks the ice, gets some laughter and shows just what’s possible. Commercial cinemas rarely achieve this, so the demo is off and running with clients getting excited by a level of performance they didn’t even realise was possible when they started to consider the project.
After that we’ll often go to a music clip, something from Bohemian Rhapsody or A Star Is Born work really well, and though massively overused, to a client that hasn’t experienced it, it can be very powerful. We wouldn’t show these to the industry as they’re used too much, but to an end user, it can be very impressive. The Greatest Showman is also in this category. Rocketman is used less, so we also try to use that where we can, or sometimes Norah Jones’, Ed Sheeran’s or Gregory Porter’s concert is the right call. All the above sound amazing. Three clips is often the right balance of time vs experience, though we can run on if the client is engaged. We run our demos very loosely, trying to share the client’s enthusiasm as we go, so a strict menu of clips is not right for us. Depending where we end up in the demo at this point, we’ll try Blade Runner 2049, Apocalypse Now, Joker, A Quiet Place, Mary Queen Of Scots, The Legend Of Tarzan, Baby Driver, Shazaam, Us, Brightburn, Deepwater Horizon and MiB International all have something awesome going on, mostly near the beginning too.
It’s all about what we’re trying to impress on the client. Firstly, it’s performance. ‘Like a cinema, but better’. And explaining how this is possible, so we can show the clients that this is transferable to their own system. Our scalable range means we can deliver any level of performance in any room, at any (most) budgets. This is key when doing the demo as we’re not saying ‘this room cost this much’, we’re saying ‘this level of performance, in your room, will cost this much’. The scalability of the Artcoustic range makes this possible, and means that no-one needs to change their story half way through when some parameters change. If the client gets all this, then the emotional content of the clips to makes them want it more and more. A wonderful end to a demo recently at the Artcoustic showroom was a teenage daughter having watched some of Hunger Games here, said “Dad, are we having this at home, really? Are we having this!?”. And they did.

ESSENTIAL TRAINING
WILL POWER! Will Hopkins, CEO of driver developers and Intrinsic Dev, offers his thoughts on getting your training mix right. I am a firm believer in training – if the professional CI industry wants to standout as being different from other trades, training is pivotal, however, training itself is not enough. Training needs to be coupled with experience to really hold and have meaning. Over the years, we’ve employed some very qualified people (for example one employee held two master’s degrees and a PhD). Having that sort of theoretical knowledge in a company is a great asset, but similarly, without the experience element, that knowledge cannot be applied. Therefore, training has to go hand in hand with experience and application, which is something our industry isn’t always the best at. Historically, many certification courses haven’t taken onboard the ‘coursework’ approach that is often found in external training programmes of a more vocational nature. Having been in the CI industry for considerable time, originally as an installer and now as a driver developer, I’ve been on my fair share of training courses. I’ve trained across all the main control platforms including Control4, Crestron, ELAN, RTI and Savant, along with many lighting control platforms and several other brands that are no longer in the market. I have certainly been on courses that are more, ‘death by PowerPoint’ than educational. Conversely, I’ve been on courses that are structered at many levels, that require practical experience in between levels, and some where the commitment in between is more arduous than having a full-time job. Getting the right
balance is always difficult and sometimes a little too often the balance is tilted more heavily towards increasing sales and hitting targets than it is skills. Personally, I think this is unwise, not only as it has the potential to leave the installer high and dry, it also risks damaging the brand name and putting the customer off investing in smart home technology in the future. I recently learnt from one of our US customers, of a major control platform running a half day certification course to open up their product to a new distribution channel. This cheapens the industry and undermines the skill set that many of us have built and developed over the years. If we are to be a professional industry, then distinguishing ourselves as professional installers and discouraging manufacturers from cheapening our industry is critical. Aside from these clearly financially orientated courses, industry training providers face a difficult challenge. Often companies (understandably) send both sales staff and installers on the same course. For the trainer, this presents a bit of a problem, as you have two very different skillsets (and often mindsets). You also frequently have very different abilities; someone who programs systems every day and is already familiar with other control platforms will typically pick up a new system much quicker than a newcomer to the industry, or a sales rep who rarely has the opportunity to get hands on with kit. It’s to these ends that we’re seeing some of the more established training providers introducing different types of courses. Here, online training plays a big role. Having online courses as a pre-requisite for hands on, practical, training courses helps ensure that everyone is at a suitable level; if
someone struggles on some concepts, they also then have the opportunity to undertake a further online course to ensure they don’t feel comfortable. Moreover, basic product knowledge can be covered here, so that an inperson training session can focus on practical application, rather than discovery of the product range. Several training providers have adopted this approach, with online courses giving a general overview before training. Furthermore, some trainers have also added basic networking training and general smart home courses to help boost the overall competency level, prior to system specific training. It’s important to understand that you can’t train in a day. I always recommend that installers purchase and use kit themselves – it’s only through doing and playing that one truly learns. The more practical experience you gain as an installer, the more useful you will find the later, more advanced training courses; to go to a course looking to solve a specific problem, or with a specific query, is always going to be much better than rote learning set up and configuration options. Similarly, when choosing what courses to undertake, it’s important to make sure that trainers provide you with your own training rig – every textbook on learning theory points to the importance of actually doing something in order to learn it. Often people are fearful of having their weaknesses exposed and some trainers will just have a single set up that is shared (or even no physical kit at all). This is the wrong approach to training – everybody is learning, so it’s ok to make mistakes – having your own setup during training means you have the ability to work things out for yourself and cements the knowledge you are being given.
Book knowledge is all well and good, but we need practical skills training too

ESSENTIAL TRAINING
TRAINING YOUR WAY INTO THE FUTURE Neil Walton, UK Operations and EMEA Training Manager at Crestron, takes a look at training fit for the 21st century. Everyone has their own preferred way of learning. Some people study best at their own place, at their own pace. Other people benefit from having a teacher in front of the room, available to answer questions when they arise. Still others prefer a combination. That is why we at Crestron are heavily investing in all three types of training: onsite, online and online with a teacher. But above all: we invest in the training that is most beneficial to help our customers generate more and better business, such as system design courses, network design courses, and courses on security. A major benefit of onsite training, is that it happens in an environment where students meet and interact with fellow students and the trainers themselves. This interaction with their peers and the trainers is hugely
There are many different ways to get information effectively into people’s heads.
66 MARCH 2020
beneficial, allowing the students to discuss ongoing projects and benefit from each other’s professional experiences. To ensure that all our trainees have the latest state of the art technology at their disposal, we opened a new training facility in Weybridge. Over the last few years we have seen an increase in online training at Crestron, with the majority of these courses being prerequisites to the Crestron Technical Institute classroom courses. Crestron now offers interactive online courses on more specialised products. Online courses provide a convenient and flexible form of training, but students are always eager to “get their hands on the kit” and experience the products for themselves. The huge numbers of trainees that pass through our training rooms is testament to this. We see a huge increased interest in courses on network designing and security. Our dealers want to learn how to design systems that provide the best solution in the market.
They want to provide the most intuitive user interface, the latest technology, and use the strongest infrastructure. That used to be a job for the engineer, but it’s becoming part of the role of the designer. It’s their job to deliver more complex and greater data across networks than ever before, in a secure way. After all, the amount of connected technology is increasing, which means that the amount of transmitted data is too. So if you want to get ahead of the game, it’s important to learn how to make the most out of your system. Another subject that makes for very popular courses, is security. Security in home automation doesn’t end at the standard alarm systems, door locks/access control and surveillance cameras. The integration of these features in any home automation system are a given, expected to be included into any modern system being installed in someone’s home today. What is much more critical to the overall security and privacy of the homeowner and their
Crestron has opened a new HQ and training facility
family, is the protection of the complete home automation system from unintended access via the internet. After all, what good are the security system or surveillance system if they can be disabled by anyone with a computer and malicious intent? What good are electronic door locks if they can be opened by hackers? Setting up a secure home automation project takes time and effort. And every part directly ties to the integrator, who is pivotal in the complete setup, including security. The first line of defense is installing and properly configuring a robust firewall. When that is done, which is no easy task, the integrator should be the one providing and configuring all parts of the home network. Even then, the job isn’t over yet, since they are critical
in the next part. Because, even when the firewall and configuration have been set up perfectly, security and privacy of homeowners with newly installed home automation systems rely on two other critical factors. • First: the platform itself must be secure, preventing unwanted access from hackers into your home automation system. • Secondly: the integrator needs to be conscious of and diligent in his policies and procedures regarding network security. Unfortunately for homeowners who just assume that their integrator is handling this correctly, it turns out that many integrators do
not pay enough attention to this. At the same time, with our training we are raising awareness amongst our dealer base that security is important and shouldn’t be ignored. Not just because there is a potential liability on the integrator themselves if they should leave something wide open, but also because we owe it to our customers to provide them with the best, user-friendliest and safest installation possible. So, we educate our installers via training, both live and webinars, about security considerations. Because we feel it is our job as manufacturers to make it as easy for our integrators as possible to excel at their jobs.

ESSENTIAL TRAINING
THE NATURE OF TRAINING Ian Bryant, CEDIA Vice President, Technology Application and Workforce, takes a look at the nature of what is needed in training today. To me, education refers not only to the knowledge of something — what it is and how it works — but the ability to do something successfully with that knowledge. Knowledge alone in a technical career is not enough, it is necessary to also have the experience of working hands-on to apply that knowledge in real-word scenarios. However, this doesn’t have to be learnt just in the field, CEDIA recommends new technicians attend a training programme with hands-on labs, along with employers adopting an onboarding process that allows employees to access inoffice training as well as shadowing in the field. Online training is the way of the future and with more advanced learning systems, it will only continue to grow. For instance, there are now learning systems that allow a student to place wires on a voltmeter in a virtual reality environment and test cables. This is amazing progress and very beneficial, but does not replace the learning that comes with physically
Are the industry’s learning practices fit for purpose?
‘doing’ and having the ability to fail (and learn) in a controlled environment. Take for instance an auto mechanic. One could sit through lectures, read books, and eventually use virtual reality to repair a car. But what about that stubborn bolt that requires physical force or the thousands of possible sounds you might hear from a bad fuel injector or spark plug? Nothing will be able to replace the level of comprehension when using handson, in-person training. What we do know for sure is that the ‘death by PowerPoint’ approach to education is truly over. We are moving into a new era of facilitative style learning with limited lectures, limited power points, and more labs. What CEDIA has found is that there is a huge gap in the market for technicians at all levels. Integrators worldwide are struggling to find qualified technicians, or even young talent that they can train. The issue, in part, stems from a lack of industry awareness within the jobs market and access to technical training in trade schools. CEDIA is actively trying to change both of these, and in the process change the way we teach those that do come to us for education. CEDIA is changing its online education platform to get away from lectures and PowerPoints to quick modules with interactive activities, quick audio and video tutorials, and the ability to access anywhere on any device.
The first level of CEDIA’s ESC-T Certification can be completed entirely online, and then to advance to level two or three, the learner must complete hands-on training, whether a CEDIA Boot Camp, CEDIA training through one of our authorised training providers, or monitored onthe-job training from their employer — even a combination of all these. CEDIA is also working on advanced training for those well into their careers. The approach is the same, with online prerequisites followed by in-person labs and testing. This ‘hybrid’ approach gets integrators familiar with concepts and basic knowledge, comfortable applying this knowledge in hands-on exercises, and then off to working in the field as quickly as possible. This is the future of education in the residential technology industry. CEDIA is renowned for the breadth and depth of its industry leading education programme. In the fast-developing world of smart home technology, professionals must constantly update their skills to keep up with the expanding demand and success for their business. For those who are new to the industry and looking for the basic knowledge to get started, or even industry professionals who want to further their expertise, CEDIA education has something to offer for everyone.
ESSENTIAL MERIDIAN
THE FLOORSTANDING SPEAKER RENAISSANCE Hugo Fitzjohn, Education Manager, Meridian Audio, takes the floor! I have fond memories of my Dad’s Hi-Fi system. In reality, it was very much an ‘everyman’ HiFi system — a Technics Amp with VU metres flickering away, matching tape, and a record deck paired with Wharfedale speakers — but it was my first experience of audio and from here, my passion for audio has grown. From the 70s, this type of system dominated the landscape of audio reproduction in the home, right from my dad’s humble system to the expensive and esoteric. In the days long before Netflix, we had just three TV channels until the advent of Channel 4 in 1982. It was against this backdrop that Hi-Fi was the main form of home entertainment.
70 MARCH 2020
By the late 90s, we had fully embraced multiroom audio and it seemed as if the arms race was on to fit a speaker in every conceivable room. Systems were clunky, but there was a novel charm in controlling CD multichangers and radio tuners hidden in other rooms. Then, in 2001, the iPod launched, unleashing the world of convenience over audio quality. Rack mounted iPod docks replacing the multi-disk CD players was not uncommon. The dawn of a new millennium hailed new norms — love it or hate it, Sonos dominated the multiroom audio market with an everexpanding portfolio of products. Its wireless amplified speakers were introduced over a decade ago. Today, amplified wireless speakers of some type are in almost every home. Thanks to Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, Airplay, etc., these devices provide oodles of convenience, but they don’t match the scale or audio quality that my dad’s humble system could deliver back in the 70s.
There’s a new revolution with an increasing desire to enjoy better quality experiences. Advances in streaming technology means that almost every album ever created is at your fingertips, possibly in studio quality. So, be bold while enjoying your music. Floor-standing speakers are, to this day, the pinnacle in audio reproduction. They are a statement of intent similar to that of owning a sports car. They are machines, deliberately and wilfully designed, to deliver emotionally engaging audio experiences that help us transcend our daily lives. Sculptures in their own right, speakers can be the art in a room. If you have read this far, you’ve probably guessed that I own a pair of floor-standing speakers! If music in any way, shape or form interests you or your client, then join the revolution! Meridian www.meridian-audio.com/products

FLAGSHIP ULTIMA PRE 2 STRIKES A CHORD Chord Electronics has launched its second ULTIMA preamp following the introduction of the flagship model in 2018. The new ULTIMA PRE 2 is the perfect accompaniment to the ULTIMA 2 and ULTIMA 3 mono power amplifiers, which benefit from the company’s adual-feed-forward error-correction circuitry. The new launch directly replaces its predecessor, the CPA 5000, and uses the company’s new aesthetic, which benefits from a redesigned bolt-less fascia, featuring a 28mmthick aircraft-grade aluminium front panel. Forming part of the company’s flagship Reference range, the new ULTIMA PRE 2 benefits from a substantially larger chassis than the company’s standard preamps and features an ultra-high-frequency power supply and
ultra-low-noise circuitry, delivering a noise floor performance of below -130dB. The new ULTIMA PRE 2 offers four pairs of fully balanced inputs, four pairs of unbalanced inputs, plus two completely independent record loops. Each input has six levels of gain which can be individually selected to prevent large changes in volume when switching between inputs; all settings are microprocessorstored, even when the power is removed. For late-night and personal listening, the ULTIMA PRE 2 also includes two low-distortion low-noise fascia-mounted 6.35mm (¼-inch) headphone outputs, designed to exploit the full potential of today’s high-quality headphones. Fully balanced AV bypass circuitry for direct connections to AV processors is also included, plus 12 V remote triggering outputs at the rear of the unit, to activate compatible power amplifiers
or AV processors on power-up. Chord Electronics’ aircraft-grade aluminium casework, available in Jett Black or Argent Silver finishes, offers a non-resonant enclosure for the electronics. The casework is complemented by a stackable Integra Leg system (Jett Black, Argent Silver or Nickel finishes) which offers the ability to stack various other full-size Chord Electronics products, plus the Choral range units (when used with the Choral stand system). A highly polished black acrylic side-block option is also offered as a no-cost alternative to the Integra Legs. ULTIMA PRE 2 is priced at £12,500 and is available to order now. NAIM AUDIO LAUNCHES CONTROL4 MUSIC STREAMING DRIVER Naim Audio has launched a dedicated Control4 driver for its range of music-streaming speakers and systems. The new driver allows installers to seamlessly control connected Naim products from Control4’s wide range of touchscreens, remote controls and apps, so high-performance multiroom music streaming can be more easily integrated into discreet custom installations. The driver also supports volume control and source switching through the Control4 interface, allowing installers to customise the user experience any way they like. The Control4 driver works with all Naim products based on the manufacturer’s music streaming platform: the Mu-so and Mu-so Qb 2nd Generation wireless speakers; Uniti Atom, Uniti Star and Uniti Nova streaming systems, and ND5 XS 2, NDX 2 and ND555 dedicated music streaming players. Further Naim products – including the Uniti
Core music server – can also be integrated, offering the ability to rip and store music collections in high quality for playback through home installations. The driver currently supports browsing of TIDAL and internet radio, with the manufacturer aiming to add more services in the future. AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in and Spotify Connect features continue to operate as normal, and the Naim App and individual product remote controls can also be used. The Naim Control4 driver offers two control methods for a Naim streaming product. One is as a media renderer, allowing browsing and playback of music services. The other is a traditional control method – enabling source switching, volume control and other functions. An installer is able to use either or both in a project, allowing them to integrate the Naim product in the most suitable way for each installation.
The new driver connects the Naim product to a Control4 processor over a network connection, so does not require any special cabling. Both wired or wireless connection can be used, but we would advise a wired connection for optimum performance. WHARFEDALE UNVEILS NEW BLISSFUL RANGE The culmination of a special three-year R&D project, Wharfedale’s new Elysian flagship speakers have been unveiled – taking their name from ‘Elysian’, meaning blissful. Two Elysian loudspeakers have been created: a large standmount model called Elysian 2 (£4,500 per pair) and a floorstanding speaker named Elysian 4 (£6,500 per pair). Both speakers were developed concurrently with the EVO4 Series, which launched towards the end of 2019 and sit immediately below Elysian in Wharfedale’s new hierarchy.
Elysian and EVO4 share many design elements, having benefited from the same R&D process as part of a unified project. The core speakers in both ranges are three-way designs, sporting an unusual driver array including an Air Motion Transformer (AMT) high-frequency unit. The development of this AMT unit was a key part of the Elysian/EVO4 project. The Elysian AMT is larger and of higher specification than the one used in the EVO4 Series, featuring an ultra-lightweight diaphragm material called PET and an acoustically damped rear chamber.
Many of these elements were trickled down, remodelled and engineered in more affordable form to create the EVO4 Series, enabling the speakers in this range to deliver value for money. The drivers’ output is combined via a crossover network, fine-tuned over hundreds of hours of listening tests to ensure a seamless blend between the drive units. Of particular note is the phase consistency across the driver output, permitting a wide range of seating positions and encouraging the power response to be linear throughout the listening room. One key aspect is the wide baffle, finished with radiused edges to smooth the flow of sonic energy around the cabinet. Speaking about the development of Elysian, Wharfedale’s Director of Acoustic Design, Peter Comeau, says, “Our aim for the Elysian/EVO4 project was to deliver a new flagship for Wharfedale (Elysian) whilst creating design elements that could be trickled down to a more affordable, mid-range series (EVO4). While we are justly proud of the value for money offered by the EVO4 Series, the two Elysian models represent the pinnacle of our achievements – loudspeakers that deliver an exceptional high-end performance yet still cost much less than many of the models with which they compete.” The Wharfedale Elysian 2 and Elysian 4 are available in the UK from this month. RRPs are £4,500 per pair (£4,900 with matching stands) and £6,500 per pair respectively. Finish options are walnut, black or white, hand-finished in highgloss piano lacquer. QMOTION UK INTEGRATES NATIVELY WITH RAKO QMotion UK and Rako have revealed that QMotion FM Roller and Roman blinds can now be natively integrated into Rako lighting control systems, without the need for special drivers, interfaces or extra programming. This development will increase the market opportunity for integrators, making automated lighting and blind installation quicker and easier to improve project profitability. “Lighting and shading control are great complementary technologies for integrators, working on every type of project, from entry level to high end smart homes,” comments Ian Claxton, Director at QMotion UK. “Native integration between QMotion Blinds and Rako lighting control systems is a significant step
forward for the market and provides the installer with a premium RF lighting and shading system without unnecessary control interfaces.” “This partnership will bring major time and cost-saving benefits,” adds Paul Wafer, Managing Director at Rako Controls. “It enables faster and simpler installation in every application to bring full functionality, greater comfort and convenience within easy reach of smart home integrators, electricians and their customers.” Both low voltage wired and battery powered versions of QMotion’s FM Blinds are available to integrate natively with Rako lighting control systems via the Rako RK-HUB or WK-HUB. The wireless control protocol is embedded within the HUB, enabling initial set up and operation. Once
the blinds are configured, they automatically become part of the Rako system. Installers can operate simple open, stop and close functions alongside four pre-set park positions as well as set any percentage level of blind opening between fully open and fully closed. Rako ‘Holiday Mode’ integrates automatic activation of lighting and shading for added security when the home is unoccupied. Up to eight QMotion UK blinds can be connected per room. On larger projects and where additional RF range may be required, then multiple Rako HUBS linked via the LAN can be used, without any limitations. Control is possible via the Rako wired or wireless controller. QMotion blinds are energy efficient thanks to the company’s patented counterbalancing spring technology which keeps battery power consumption to an absolute minimum and delivers near silent operation in every application. The patented QMotion manual-override command also allows the end user the ability to operate the blinds by hand without damaging the automated mechanism. The manual override feature provides an unrivalled level of control QMotion resellers and distributors can use the QMotion Online Configurator to choose a ‘Rako’ blind system. FYNE TIME TO EXPAND THE F700 SERIES Fyne Audio has added three new models to its F700 Series, the compact F700 bookshelf and F701 stand-mount models, the F704 floor-stander, and has expanded its flagship F1 series of loudspeakers with two stand mount models – the F1-5 and F1-8 and a dedicated stand, the FS8. The F704 is the latest loudspeaker design to emerge from Fyne’s Glasgow, UK factory. Designed to fill the largest rooms, the near 70kg F704 features Fyne’s IsoFlare point source driver at 12in (300mm) diameter and is augmented with a supplementary 12in (300mm) bass driver. The F704 boasts 96dB/W efficiency and 600W peak power handling to deliver up to 120dB SPL. The IsoFlare driver in the F704 coaxially mates a 300mm multi-fibre cone LF driver with FlyneFlute roll surround to a unique 75mm titanium dome compression tweeter. At the other end of the loudspeaker spectrum, the F700 is just 348mm tall, but the maker says offers true point source articulation and engaging dynamics from its single 6in (150mm) IsoFlare driver. This unit uses a 25mm magnesium dome compression tweeter
with a compact, high power neodymium magnet motor system. Despite its compact dimensions, the F700 offers bass output down to 40Hz, 89dB/W efficiency and peak handling power of 300W. The larger F701 steps up to a 8in (200mm) IsoFlare driver in a 465mm tall cabinet, delivering point source accuracy at 91dB/W efficiency and handling peaks over 350W. The F700, F701 and F704 all benefit from Fyne’s BassTrax Tractrix LF diffuser system integrated into their machined aluminium plinths. The hand-built crossovers are Deep Cryogenically Treated, relieving micro stresses in components, conductors and solder joints of the crossover circuit, improving structure in the conductive materials and leading to a cleaner, more refined and natural sound. Like all models in the F700 series, the new F700, F701 and F704 are available in piano gloss black, piano gloss white and the sumptuous piano gloss walnut veneer. Fyne Audio www.fyneaudio.com

announced the Q900T and Q800T, expanding its range of QLED 8K TVs. Offering sizes from 55, to 98 inches ensures there is now an 8K TV fit for all needs and spaces. Samsung’s QLED 4K TVs continue to be a major proponent of Samsung’s overall TV portfolio. 2020 brings Samsung’s strongest QLED 4K line-up yet, with Q60T, Q70T, Q80T, Q90T and Q95T models now available in sizes from 43 to 85 inches. “We are in a new era of intelligent display; this year will bring even more demand for TV personalisation,” says Nathan Sheffield, Head of TV and Sound Devices, Samsung Europe. “Our 2020 TV and Sound Device line-up is our strongest, smartest and most immersive yet, catering to a variety of lifestyles without the need for compromise.” Picture and sound quality are the foundation of Samsung QLED TVs but what really sets the 2020 line-up apart are
enhanced ‘Smart Screen’ AI capabilities. Quantum Dot AI combines Samsung’s 8K content processor with Tizen to upscale any content. Regardless of source or current resolution, content can now be displayed across 33 million pixels. Adaptive Picture analyses light conditions as well as the content on the screen to ensure perfect picture quality, regardless of whether TV is watched in a bright or dark room. Interestingly, Active Voice Amplifier eliminates European consumers’ second largest distraction when watching TV – background noise. It automatically recognises these interruptions and adjusts voice clarity accordingly. Objecting Tracking Sound+ (OTS+) creates a three-dimensional sound effect by combining the multiple speakers on the top, side and bottom of the TV with a proprietary AI algorithm. OTS+ perfectly matches audio with the onscreen action. Samsung www.samsung.com
