Plan ahead

A bit of shameless self-promotion this month as EI reminds readers that registration for EI Live! 2019 is opening very soon; check out the brand-new dedicated website at eiliveshow.com to get all the details to plan your trip to the show. The new site provides loads of information on the show itself, the venue, travel, accommodation and loads more. If you have not heard already, the show has moved to a new venue called the Farnborough Exhibition Centre for 2019 (April 30-May 1 2019), a recently constructed purpose-built exhibition space, not a million miles from the old venue at Sandown Park: basically turn left off the M25 instead of right. It’s an absolutely stonking venue and has all the connectivity, cutting-edge tech and build quality that a show like EI Live! needs. All shows need to evolve and change to keep their relevance, so as ISE has announced its move to Barcelona this year, EI Live! has also switched up in terms of venue, but that is not all that has changed. The show in 2019 will present a wider exhibitor pallet than before, providing visitors with more opportunities to paint AV and automation pictures for a wider group of customers and clients. We started covering commercial install work in EI several years ago. This was in response to readers making it clear that many of them worked both sectors in providing

top-end automation and AV experiences, not just to home owners and developers, but commercial clients too who wanted their hotels, bars, clubs, restaurants, offices and venues to deliver new experiences and working practices. So, it’s only natural that the show should reflect this. As well as the domestic focused AV and automation the show is best known for, expect to see some commercialfocused makers and distributors too – some you will probably know already, some you might not – so use the show to explore new opportunities as well as cement existing relationships. The Technical Theatre is back this year but expect more from that area in 2019 as well. Centrally located, the space will feature important and exclusive opportunities to learn about the present and the future of the AV and automation sectors from some of the top people in the industry and also those from beyond who have interesting perspectives. Getting to a show can be difficult; clients come first of course, but opportunities like EI Live! do not come along every week. Organisers are working hard to make sure a visit to the show delivers value for visitors and exhibitors alike, all you really have to do is turn up. So get that date down on the diary now and reap all these benefits for free. With other shows moving further away from the UK, EI Live! remains committed to delivering a top-quality experience for UK and northern European installers, so take full advantage.

Is Amazon Alexa planning to build itself in the to fabric of new homes?

Amazon wants prefabricated homes to have built-in Alexa support Amazon has leveraged its Alexa fund, which makes capital available to companies in the hope that they will fuel voice technology innovation, to invest in a California start-up building prefabricated homes, Plant Prefab. This latest investment comes as the online retailer attempts to bake its Alexa voice assistant into every aspect of a user’s life, from its microwave to the wall clock. Plant Prefab is able to build custom-built homes in a factorycontrolled environment, with its method said to be far more sustainable than other prefab manufacturers. This is because of a secret technology used by the company, which it says provides a 50% reduction in construction time and between 15-25% reduction in overall cost. It’s not just in construction that the firm is utilising technology, however, as it also includes a connected home right from day one, thanks to the integration of devices such as the Nest Learning Thermostat. It’s the integration of smart technology that has piqued Amazon’s interest in the firm. Plant Prefab’s CEO, Steve Glenn, has noted that the firm is committed to ‘making sure our homes meet our clients’ lifestyle needs, and having greater and more effective smart home technology and integration is part of that’. It’s not yet known exactly what Amazon hopes to achieve from its investment in Plant Prefab, but it’s not hard to imagine Alexa-enabled new build homes being rolled out across the United States and elsewhere. After all, the firm has already signalled its desire to make the Alexa assistant ubiquitous, with an event last month showcasing a range of new devices that would put the smart assistant inside the car and new appliances. Viveroo makes a strong partner for the iPad

Redline now distributing Viveroo Viveroo’s attractive range of wall and furniture mounts for the iPad are now all available from UK distributor Redline. The distinctive sculptured range is hand-crafted from premium materials and has been created to blend with the iPad’s form. The maker says each mount in the range offers different features that have been designed to provide improved visibility and functionality of the iPad in both domestic and commercial environments. The Loop is described as the world’s first rotating iPad mount for flush installation. The innovative rotating mechanism makes it possible to alternate between vertical and horizontal positions. The unit is available in Super Silver, Deep Black and Clear White. The Loop 360 is a table-mounted version of the Loop allowing 360° rotation of the iPad. A strong option for retail and domestic environments. This is available in the same colour range at its wall mounted cousin. The Square design complements the form of the iPad and is designed to offer a strong presence from any angle. Also available in Super Silver, Deep Black and Clear White. Another line, Free creates the affect of floating on the wall with contemporary asymmetrical lines that are machined from billeted aluminium and create a sharp look for modern rooms. This version is available in Super Silver and Dark Steel. An extension to this concept is Free Flex which features USB cable charging, a rotating joint head to allow landscape or portrait orientation and custom tube length for flexibility of fitting. The Free Flex Pedestal version allows the Free to be moved from room to room. For those specialist jobs, the entire range can be finished in any colour, and corporate branding can be added. Elipson celebrates 80th anniversary with special editions

This French maker is celebrating 80 years in the business

French AV brand Elipson is celebrating the impressive milestone of 80 years in business by launching some special anniversary editions of its bestselling audio products. Elipson started creating its unique shape of sound with spherical speakers from a French workshop in Vitry, central France back in 1938. Over the years Elipson speakers have been installed in some of the most beautiful venues from the Chateau de Chambord, the 1968 Winter Olympics stadiums, French radio and TV stations to the more recent prestigious Hotel de Crillon and New Morning, Temple of jazz and soul in Paris. 80 years on and several innovations later, the Elipson brand shares its passion for sound and design with a new generation of consumer and commercial audiophiles. Elipson said its latest products combine the very best of high fidelity performance with the latest electronic audio technologies. To mark this 80th birthday occasion, the brand has selected three of its finest and bestselling products. The spherical shaped Planet L and more traditional Prestige Facet 8B speakers feature enhanced crossovers using high grade quality components, in addition to an attractive satin black finish with gold trim. The Alpha 100 RIAA BT turntable also enjoys the same black and gold treatment with an enhanced integral phono stage. A pioneer in sound innovation, Elipson has always sought to set new standards by introducing a number of patents which have arguably changed the world of contemporary acoustics. The internal resonator, along with the acoustic phasing and symmetrical loading techniques developed by the company are still used by a number of the brand’s competitors. Its ‘cult’ models have adopted a spherical shape and a reflector to create a distinctive sound signature to match their unusual sculptural design. Additionally, Elipson produces in-wall speakers, portable speakers, consumer electronics and turntables, all made in France. The brand also exports to over 50 countries in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. Elipson elipson.com

Focal appoints OneAV as CI distributor for UK market

Focal and OneAV are forging a new alliance

Focal, the specialist loudspeaker and headphone company based in Saint Etienne, France, has announced the appointment of OneAV as the exclusive UK distributor of its flush-mount speaker range for the CI channel. Responsible for all sales and support of Focal’s latest range of flush-mount speakers, OneAV will be working closely with the Focal UK team to proactively develop the CI channel in the UK, offering dedicated training and pre-sales support along with product fulfilment. Commenting on the appointment, James Trumper, sales director at OneAV, says, “Focal speakers are the epitome of the OneAV promise – technical excellence but reasonably priced. We’re incredibly excited to be entering the audio space with such a prominent tier one brand.” Andy Oattes, head of sales for Focal and Naim UK, adds, “I’m delighted to be working with such a young but highly focussed and driven team. OneAV is a superb match for us at Focal and we have some very exciting plans for the future. We see great possibilities and it’s particularly nice to be working with a team that think so progressively.” Unveiled at ISE 2018, Focal’s latest range of CI products brings together the research and development utilised for its home audio products into a concise range of flush-mount speakers. Three ranges are available: the entry-level 100 Series, the mid-level 300 Series and the range-topping Electra Series. Matching the technology of its award-winning range of home audio products to deliver a similar sound signature for easy mix and matching, the performance of Focal’s range of flush-mount speakers now epitomise the brand’s message that CI can be Hi-Fi. OneAV will also be supplying the complete Focal range of stand-alone Classic Hi-Fi speakers. The whole Focal range has been voiced to match so systems can be created mixing the integrated CI models and visible products such as the recently updated Kanta range and others from the Focal family. The idea is for OneAV to help installers gain access to the best of both worlds available from the Focal family. OneAV will not be supplying the Focal headphone family. Single zone, multi-room and home cinemas can also be accommodated. Installer friendly features include the in-ceiling loudspeakers of the 100 Series offering a compact design, with the speaker driver’s basket and chassis designed as a single unit. The 100 Series is also loaded with Focal’s own technologies inherited from 35 years of experience, like the Polyglass mid/bass driver cone and the aluminium inverted dome tweeter. The speakers are also suitable for a wide-range of applications, including humid environments such as bathrooms. The 300 Series range is made in France and offers exclusive Focal technologies, such as its attractive Flax cone and the aluminium-magnesium inverted dome tweeter, designed to provide audiophile sound quality. The 300 Series also features the EQI system which means Easy Quick Install. Whether they’re used as inceiling or in-wall loudspeakers, they require no tools to install. Focal adds that these products also offer frameless, adjustable tweeters and magnetic grilles. Besides the launch of the entry-level 100 Series and the mid-range 300 Series, Focal continues to offer its Electra Series as the flagship range. Enhanced content and technology was featured, with processing courtesy of a specially enhanced Marantz AV8805 in the AWE Reference Cinema Room. “Mind-blowing does not do justice to describing the experience and we were privileged to showcase IMAX Enhanced in all its glory at AWE Expo,” says AWE’s managing director, Stuart Tickle. In demo, the system and content is very impressive, punchy without being overpowering.

Samsung’s The Frame TV blends with the Denon CEOL10 audio system featuring HEOS in the Study

Reference cinema room

Now with a 7.4.6 speaker configuration, the larger of the two AWE cinemas delivers the company’s most immersive experience yet. The front sound stage has been upgraded to the new KEF Ci5160REF-THX speakers. These are built to the same standards as the KEF Reference models. And, like all Reference speakers, the Ci5160REF-THX comes with the Reference Build Certificate signed by the craftsman who built it. Two of Definitive Technology’s SuperCube 8000s have also been added to deliver 1500W each of precise and deep bass performance. The 133in picture is now delivered by Epson’s 3LCD laser projector and a Draper screen using ReAct ambient light rejecting fabric, which enables deep blacks.

Performance cinema room

Visitors were also treated to the first showing of the Epson EH-TW7400 PRO-UHD HDR capable projector. To complement the visuals, AWE has used Definitive Technology’s Ultimate In-Wall Reference Series speakers in a 7.4.4 configuration. The speakers are fully enclosed units with a depth of less than 10cm, meaning they will fit in standard 4in stud walls without the need to construct a backbox, including the subwoofers – each of which houses two 10.5in drivers. The Marantz SR8012 drives the sound system. The receiver provides enough amplification to drive all 11 main speakers, with subwoofers driven via dedicated power amplifiers. An acoustically transparent fixed Draper 110in Clarion screen ensures audio is not compromised for the centre speaker which is placed directly behind the screen. Again impressive performance is achieved here, particularly when the keen price point of this system is taken into a count.

Samsung’s The Frame TV blends seamlessly into this new space, displaying artwork when switched off. Providing accompanying audio is the small but powerful Denon CEOL10 audio system featuring HEOS, with Definitive Technology’s Demand D7 speakers.

Games room

Samsung’s QLED 8K’s true 8K resolution and AI capabilities take the stage here. The QLED technology is designed to provide a bright, crystal clear image, whilst Ambient Mode blends the screen into the home when not being used as a TV. The AI driven up-scaling on the set is impressive, and has been achieved by reverse engineering software which can scale an 8K image back down to 4K.

Living room

Visitors were impressed with the Master Series TVs from Sony including the AF9 OLED

Visitors were able to experience the ultra-slim Definitive Technology Mythos XTR speakers, which offer high quality sound in a cabinet that is even thinner than the on-display 65in Sony Master Series flagship 65ZF9 LED TV. The AVR powering the area is the Marantz SR5013, being the latest version of the AWE exclusive model.

Dining room

The impressive looking 55in luxury mirror television from Videotree was on show to provide a wow factor for visitors, as were the IP66-rated bathroom and outdoor televisions. To finish off the area was the newly installed Philips Hue Beyond Pendant light.

Upgraded comms room In the comms room, Sanus 19in racks stacked with all the control and AV distribution equipment used throughout the AWE Show Apartment were available to view. This includes Philips Dynalite, HDAnywhere and URC Total Control 2.0 system processor and amplification. Also on view here, the audio system driving the Reference Cinema, which now features Classé Sigma power amps delivering 400W per channel to the main speakers and a Marantz MM8077 driving the height speakers. The Marantz 8805 processor delivers 13.2-channel processing, and the inwall subs are driven by KEF KASA500 power amplifiers. The main source is a 4K Pro HDR Blu-Ray player from Panasonic.

Updated product gallery

The latest from AWE’s product portfolio was on show in the gallery. This included speakers from Definitive Technology’s Mythos BP floorstanding Tower range, featuring integral active subwoofers and the DI and IW architectural ranges. These used the AWE Exclusive HEOS Drive multiroom audio amplifier for the demonstration. Also, on show from HEOS was the full range of speakers and the AWE exclusive SuperLink, which is a good option for use within dedicated Crestron, Control4 and URC DMS audio systems. The TV gallery showed off the latest OLED screens from Sony, LG and Panasonic in addition to the brandnew 8K and other QLED screens from Samsung. The most up-to-date HDAnywhere video distribution system were also available to view, complemented by wall brackets and racks from Sanus. The gallery tour was rounded off by a large URC Total control 2.0 interactive demonstration, which controls QMotion blinds, various Z-Wave products including locks and plugs and Philips Hue.

What did the industry think?

Phil Wildman of Wildman Audio Visual says, “The new Master Series TVs from Sony – the AF9 OLED and ZD 9 LED – were a big attraction. We have a customer interested in a big screen solution right now, so we were very keen to see these TVs in the flesh and impressed by them too. “We also liked the KEF R Series speakers in the AWE Music Room – they sounded fantastic; great clarity. The Videotree products are also good. This is a chance for us to see lots of new products in one place at one time. It’s a thumbs up from us for the AWE Expo.” Simon Gregory, Cinema Rooms, adds, “We were excited to see the Sony Master Series and the new Samsung 8K QLED screens – both look phenomenal. “The IMAX Enhanced demo was also great to experience. It’s up to us now to figure out how we’re going to bring that kind of enhanced performance into the residential space. An excellent day all round with a great hog roast and brilliant AWE hospitality thrown in.” “A day like this is always very valuable for us,” says Mike Ranpura, Smart Life AV, “The key stand-outs for me have been the new, improved AWE THX Cinema Room where we saw the IMAX Enhanced demo. The Cinema Room has a lot more bass with the Definite Technology SuperCube 8000 active subwoofers, which bring a significant improvement. “Seeing the IMAX Enhanced demo, you realise that this is a lot more than just a name. It actually changes the way you watch films and I think it’ll be great for those smaller cinema rooms that we do. I was also pleased to see the new Roman Blinds from QMotion in action and get more information on how they work. Overall, it’s a pleasure to come down, see what’s new and talk with industry colleagues and friends.” To visit the AWE Smart Apartment, contact the company direct for an appointment. Essential Install | Case Study: Clever Association

Be my mews

Clever Association delivered this stylish project in a period home located in one of London’s most sought after areas. Clever Association is an award-winning technology consultancy, designing and installing bespoke entertainment and integration solutions in homes and businesses across the UK and around the world. The company was established in 2003 and has offices at opposite ends of England in Harrogate and London. Clever Association was founded by Richard Jones, the current managing director, after working in the industry with CEDIA and AMX on their marketing materials and strategies. Anthony Gallon came on board in 2007, again from a control systems background, taking on the role of technical director. Both directors have very active roles within the company; Richard specialising in day-to-day operations, sales and project management and Anthony the technical aspects of specification and system design. With a team of 12 made up of project managers, system designers, audiovisual engineers, electricians and lighting design specialists, Clever Association are a busy team delivering steady growth over the years. Anthony explains, “We’ve had the privilege to be a part of many prestigious projects around the world, working alongside some very talented design professionals. We are very proud to have worked on a number of apartments within the One Hyde Park development in Knightsbridge, London, as it’s one of the world’s most exclusive addresses.

“Another project we are particular proud of is in the North East of England. This whole-house solution features a high-end home cinema in the basement with breathtaking levels of performance. We design and install many cinemas, but it’s not every day that we can install a solution of this calibre. “We also have some fantastic commercial projects that were a real pleasure to work on, including a solution for a large equestrian stables and elite show jumping facility. Detailed planning was required to ensure that the vast site had seamless connectivity both from a networking and telephony point of view.” Anthony adds, “We are lucky enough to have picked up awards from CEDIA and Lutron for some of our favourite projects too. Industry recognition is not just a good way to prove our credentials to potential clients but it’s great for morale too!”

Belgravia Mews House

So how did this latest project come about? Anthony explains, “We already had a relationship with the clients as we had worked on other properties of theirs in the past. When they decided to purchase and renovate this Belgravia Mews House, they naturally came back to us for our assistance. In these situations, it can prove to be more

straightforward as we can specify and deliver a solution that the client is used to, consistency of technology across their properties is vital.” Lighting control was a key element of the project as the modern, decorative light fittings in the property were a big part of the overall aesthetic. Anthony explains, “We’d installed Lutron HomeWorks QS for the clients previously, so it was the natural choice in this property too. Button engraving on control keypads was done to match closely what the clients were used to. We installed multi-room audio throughout the key areas of the property, based on Linn DS and Bowers & Wilkins loudspeakers. In the main television viewing room we installed a discreet surround sound solution to enhance that experience.” Centralised video sources were distributed around the home via a Wyrestorm HDBaseT matrix with handheld RTI remote controls for ease of use. Also, an IC Realtime CCTV and BPT door intercom package gives the clients peace of mind when they are in the property. The robust networking solution based upon Draytek, Cisco and Ubiquiti equipment also allows for remote monitoring while the clients are away too.

Anthony adds, “This project went well and there weren’t too many challenges to overcome. Using tried and tested equipment, that the client was already familiar with made the process go smoothly.” Now it is finished, the team’s favourite aspect of this property is the Lutron lighting control. Anthony says, “The fittings that the interior designer picked out, coupled with our lighting control, bring a real ‘wow’ factor. The clients can control their lighting at the touch of a button, allowing them to easily create a really warm and inviting environment. Being a family that enjoy movies together the clients also love to spend time in their main television room, where the surround sound system gives them that immersive experience.” Clever Association 0207 1831 314 cleverass.com

Essential Install | CEDIA

Home cinema is good for your health

Let’s talk home cinema

Ian Bolt, chairman of CEDIA member Custom Sight & Sound, argues that this is a great time to be having a home cinema conversation with clients. No one likes overly pushy sales-people; I can’t bear them. In our business, it certainly helps if we’re not always the ones driving the conversation with our clients or prospective clients. The good news is that, at present, there are plenty of others doing the talking for us when it comes to home cinema. First off, there’s IMAX Enhanced. The launch of this new certification program aims to bring ‘unrivalled AV quality to homes around the world’. IMAX has also said that more movies either filmed or formatted for its screens will be made available in expanded aspect ratios for home viewing. How this actually plays out in reality will be interesting to see. I, for one, am guarded that the roll-out of this program doesn’t actually undermine the perception of IMAX as a premium experience in the eyes of consumers. Also, let’s be clear, I’m not expecting to see a huge upsurge in the number of actual IMAX cinemas installed in UK homes. However, what this move does give us is a new and exciting opportunity to talk with our clients about creating an immersive cinema experience in the home. We’re also at a point where we have a fantastic range of audiovisual technology available that can help us bring that experience to life for our clients. Today, in truth, we can deliver anything that ranges from pretty good to glorious, whatever the budget restriction might be. The start-point of the conversation may well be IMAX, but the end-point will likely be the kind of professionally designed system which is the staple of our industry.

Arguably, home cinema has never been in a better place than it is now

The continuing proliferation of great quality content via Netflix, Amazon Prime and multiple other streaming services is also helpful to integrators. It’s our responsibility to make life simple for our clients. Since these streaming service providers have zero intention of living on an integrated, common platform, the job of creating a simple, custom solution for our clients belongs to us. The requirement for our clients to easily navigate their content providers, find what they want and consume it plays very strongly to the skills of the technology integrator.

Cinema is good for you!

Finally, there’s a lot of talk out there about wellness, whether that’s in the workplace or the home. You can’t move for advice on what you can do to improve your fitness and wellbeing! Going to the movies has always been about entertainment, enjoyment and escape into a different world. More than that, a number of studies actually show that cinema is good for you. Back in 2005, the Institute for Social and Economic Research suggested that people who visit the cinema once a month may be less prone to anxiety and depression. A recent study in the journal Heart found that laughing through a funny film could help to dilate the blood vessels, improve blood flow and release endorphins to help people feel more relaxed and well. Think how our clients can reduce those levels with more frequent visits to a professionally designed, immersive home cinema. I know it may sound a bit of a stretch, but home cinema does tap into this wellness trend, and will continue to do so. And, what’s good for our client and their family is also good for our business. Based in Upminster, CEDIA member Custom Sight & Sound design, delivers and supports integrated residential and entertainment systems for private clients and property developers. The company partners with architects, interior designers, contractors, M&E and cost consultants across the country. and has won multiple industry awards in recognition of the quality of its work. Essential Install | Habitech

Theatre of dreams Habitech’s new Sonance Reference theatre design by CinemaTech offers the experience of a luxury, acoustically optimised cinema environment to you and your customers

Cinematech’s Design Service Programme provides you with design drawings and an acoustic design plan

Every integrator can now deliver the world’s most desirable home cinema environments with a little help from Habitech. Jonathan Pengilley explains the bountiful value of its new partnership with CinemaTech. If Haynes, the car manual people, wrote the book on CI it would include a big intimidating chapter called ‘Private Home Theatres’. This is because the building of a highly specialised room-within-a-room not only stretches CI’s ‘hide and simplify’ skill repertoire, it demands the collective craftsmanship of builders, carpenters, joiners, acousticians and designers at the top of their game. You may well be a wireless wizard and a doyen of signal distribution, but you’d have to think long and hard about taking on the largest and most complex investment in a single room within the home. There is a way, however, for all integrators to share in the rewards of this exclusive market from a standing start. Through our new partnership with CinemaTech, you don’t have to build a team of specialists, we’ll provide one for you! To label CinemaTech as a ‘home cinema designer’ is like describing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 as ‘just going up and down the keys’. With hundreds of prestigious projects to its name, the CinemaTech design team can apply 25 years’ of experience to the successful and most

exacting delivery of your bespoke theatre. Habitech’s exclusive partnership with CinemaTech gives you access to its industry-leading Design Service Program (DSP), which, through meticulous consultation, generates a unique interior design for the space, followed by accurate 3D design renders.

The largest signal processor is the room

Incorporated within every project is CinemaTech’s patented Acoustic Room System, developed to create the optimum acoustic environment for the most compelling home theatre experiences. It’s the only acoustic wall treatment system that works down to 100 Hz from just 3.175cm of profile depth. With a finely calibrated combination of high/mid frequency, reflecting/diffusing panels and low-frequency absorbers, CinemaTech tunes the theatre environment to achieve the maximum performance from the audio system you specify.

Render v Real. CinemaTech’s DSP produces accurate 3D room renders of the design. Opposite shows the render followed by the finished theatre space

Welcome to the world’s most exclusive cinema design club

So when you have a customer for the most haute of home theatres, how does the process pan out? First we’ll arrange a consultation to explain the design/installation process and establish room dimensions, potential uses for the space, max guest capacity, preliminary system configuration and seating plan, time frames, and a ballpark budget. Next comes the design consultation, involving CinemaTech‘s design team at an upfront cost of £3k through Habitech (refunded if the value of CinemaTech services and products exceeds £20k). We’ll begin the Design Service Programme to determine your customer’s style preferences using thousands of design permutations, involving material and finish samples, including equipment options, lighting and seating choices. This info is fed back to the CinemaTech team, which then produces the preliminary design drawings and dimensional room analysis for acoustical optimisation, together with accurate 3D room renders of exactly how the room will look when constructed. Finally, at the detailed project planning stage, Habitech will submit CinemaTech’s quote for services and panels to you, adding options including build labour, AV system, seating, and lighting design. Then you’ll present the global project quote to your happy customer.

Light touch or tighter grip: you decide

Outside the CinemaTech elements, you decide how to divide the workload. We can project manage the entire shebang if that’s what you want. The beauty of this new value-added service is that while your contact with the customer remains inviolable, your level of involvement is elastic. For instance, if you’re already established in the market you may elect to buy-in CinemaTech’s acoustic tech alone. But if you’re taking your first steps in luxury theatre design, you will need support. This may include our product guys, as well as proven builders and lighting specialists. Long story short, right through the planning, design and build stages we’ll be working in the background to offer you a level of backup that adjusts to fit your needs. And because we’ve already completed the successful build of our Sonance/CinemaTech reference theatre at Basingstoke, we’ll have a living environment to show you and your customers, as well as specialist suppliers to recommend. Naturally we’d be happy to configure and deliver the AV hardware, but you’re free to specify any system – that’s your prerogative. We’ll simply ask you to install, test and commission the AV elements as your minimum contribution to the project. Most importantly, we won’t contact your customer directly because you’re the boss and we’re the support team.

We’ll raise our game together

With Habitech at your side, you’ll have the ammunition to target every home cinema space, from the modest media room to the most desirable, unique and precision-crafted home theatre environment. Not only can we provide the high performance hardware, the training and the product support, we can now offer you CinemaTech’s unprecedented design knowhow and, via our new demonstration rooms, the best possible experience of discreet AV systems in familiar home settings. For your cinema design business I’d call that a full house of opportunities!

Essential Install | Pulse Cinemas

Cyberhomes wins big at CEDIA Awards with Pulse support

‘Hampshire Cinema Seduction’ by Pulse Cinemas customer, Cyberhomes, picked up the Best Home Cinema £120,000-£340,000 category at this year’s CEDIA Awards. Here’s why.

The Cyberhomes team pick up a much-deserved CEDIA Award

Ion Smith, founder and director of Cyberhomes explains, “This customer wanted the ‘ultimate home cinema room’ with no compromises. He wanted the biggest screen possible and calculations showed that the largest screen that would fit would just meet recommended viewing angles from the seating positions. The sound had to be Dolby Atmos, and if possible, he wanted more than the 7.1.2 arrangement. Also, the screen image had to be bright enough to use during the day with lights on for general sports/TV, as well as in evenings or a darkened room for movies.” With a detailed and challenging brief, Cyberhomes called on the knowledge, demonstration resources and high-quality brands available from Pulse Cinemas. To deliver the performance needed, a highbrightness projector was imperative, initially Cyberhomes recommended the Digital Projection E-Vision laser 4K UHD single-chip DLP projector (7,500 ISO lumens) and took the client to a demo at Pulse HQ. During the session, technical director of Pulse, Kapes Patel, set up a special A/B comparison with the initially recommended projector and the Digital Projection 4K-UHD HIGHlite three-chip DLP laser model rated at 12,500 ISO lumens. Underlining the added value Pulse is able to deliver, the client was impressed with the high-spec version and went with that, delivering a valuable up-sell into the project. Mike Beatty, Pulse MD, comments, “This is a perfect demonstration of what we have been underlining about genuine partnerships with our dealers. Interface with what we have to offer and commit to it, because it will deliver real business and performance benefits. “We have just officially launched our new Enhanced Dealer Finder Portal where our dealer partners can build up a strong picture of their services, successes and work to help generate more business. This CEDIA Awards win is a prime example of what can be achieved in partnership with Pulse and also demonstrates the kind of content that can be loaded onto the portal, so that potential customers don’t just get contact details and brief descriptions, but a genuine insight into what the dealer can deliver.” Part of the initiative is that dealers who commit to working with Pulse receive a whole range of guaranteed benefits based on set criteria. The benefits include

professional photography for projects, full calibration services, exposure through the Pulse Cinemas social media network and installation of the month/installation of the year awards. The scheme also offers certification/ accreditation for training courses sat at Pulse Cinemas venues, preferential credit terms, access to ‘Exclusively Connect’ networking events, and support with entries for CEDIA Awards. More details of the scheme are available direct from the Pulse team. Other Pulse brands included in this now award-winning project included a Screen Research XLR3 acoustically transparent screen which allowed the main LCR speakers to be in the ideal positions behind the screen. The motorised side masking allows automatic aspect ratio change of the visible screen area and also provides full closure to protect the screen when not in use. The room was also acoustically treated using a bespoke acoustics package designed and installed by Pulse brand Vicoustic. The Pulse electronics family was also called into action via the StormAudio ISP 3D 16 Elite processor providing the Dolby Atmos decoding. Initially this was going to be a 9.1.4 implementation, but part way through the process an update was available for the processor allowing it to support 9.1.6, so the height speaker positions were redesigned to accommodate an additional pair of speakers. Another example of the quality of Pulse brands offering ways to keep the cinema on the cutting edge. A 16-channel StormAudio PA 16 Elite amplifier provides amplification for the main speakers (using 15 of the available amps) and each of the four subwoofers have their own dedicated James Loudspeakers M1000 amplifiers. Pulse also supplied the speakers including LCR drivers (James QX830), surround models (James QX530) and height speakers (James QX520) correctly located according to Dolby’s Atmos design guidelines. There are also two James M122 12in dual subwoofers at the front of the room in bespoke low-level cabinets, and a further two QX1020 10in dual subwoofers at the rear. The performance of the cinema was enhanced by creating two ISF calibration settings, one to cope with ‘daylight’ viewing, another for ‘night’. Topping the whole experience off are bespoke leather seats from Pulse brand Fortress Seating. Pulse Cinemas 01279 647 039, pulsecinemas.com

Essential Install | Networking & Remote Management

Remote Control

EI takes a look at what’s new in networking and in particular the growth in remote management techniques.

The Domotz platform has helped change the game on what networking really means

One of the major forces behind the growth in remote system management has been the Domotz platform. For those unfamiliar with the system, Domotz uses three main elements to deliver a range of remote management abilities via the Domotz Mobile Application, the Domotz Cloud and the Domotz Network Agent. These elements are combined with a hardware partner located within the home or building. Domotz has its own hardware, but there are also a range of hardware partners and lots of products that are compatible with the system. The platform can also cope with set ups that have more than one LAN network in a building, useful if the system is being used in a commercial setting such as retail. Speaking exclusively to EI, JB Fowler, chief revenue officer for the company, says, “The most obvious benefits we are delivering is to stop truck rolls and increase efficiency for integrators allowing them to deliver a more rounded service to customers. We also encourage installers to use our system to be pro-active and build enough of a support package to justify service contacts. “Power-cycling is of huge benefit to installers as often this can solve most issues. This can be performed direct to a given product, but also via units such as PDUs, WAPs, or anything with a PoE connection.” Security is important to Domotz and the system uses a secure channel (Encrypted Overlay Network) between the network and its cloud service as well as an HTTPS channel between the App (either Mobile App or WebApp). This means that all communication from the App to the Agent is encrypted. JB also says that installers find the speed tests the system provides very useful. The system can also deliver more detailed information and history of what has happened on the network so reoccurring issues can be identified to a particular product, time or scenario. As well as interrogating products such as a router, the system can spread out over a wireless network and investigate what is happening there. Useful abilities here include spotting the bandwidth at a given point in the network and making sure products such as Apple TV are getting what they need.

JB adds, “With the amount of firmware up-dates that are needed to keep a modern home up and running, the system helps here as well. From the UI installers can see which products are due for firmware up-grades and remote manage the whole process making sure everything goes smoothly.” Another cool ability is using TCP Tunnelling to create a secure connection to automation systems such as Crestron, Savant or Lutron. Using this ability, it’s possible to reprogram a system remotely via the automation platform’s own programming software. JB says, “It’s also possible to use SNMP sensors to set up more unusual alerts. A member of our own team set up a sensor connected to a Raspberry Pi to notify him of small changes of temperature in his tropical fish tank, this is the level you can go to if needed.” As for new developments, JB tells EI that the WyreStorm family is the latest big name to sign up to be a compatible partner, primarily with its NetworkHD range. This should provide particular abilities when dealing with installs such as sports bars where large amounts of screens are involved to maintain system health and reliability. Denon and Marantz are also recent partners providing access to much of their AVR ranges and with 2018 models providing detailed access and connectivity. JB also hints that there are more manufacturers signing up as we speak, but they cant be officially revealed as yet, however he does say that video distribution is going to be a big growth area in terms of hardware partners. JB is also proud that the Global Presence Alliance, a group of commercially focused installers who look to deliver recognised and consistent standards to end user companies, has decided independently to adopt the Domotz platform as its remote management system of choice. Compatibility with the Zigbee platform is also close to being officially announced and a new alert ability to warn the user if a device is going to slow down in answering to ‘Ping’ messages is also coming. Another new element is also coming via the Application Programming Interface (API) which the Domotz UI is based on. JB explains, “We are in the process of providing access to the API so installers can more closely control and change what they see allowing them to effectively create their own UI within the system. Installers will also be able to call into the system and take images direct from the UI. Its difficult to make an interface that suits everyone, so we decided to give integrators the power to make their own.” Another big change is coming in terms of how installers pay for the system. Instead of the older Domotz Credit system, companies are now able to have their monthly charges allied to a given credit or bank card simplifying the process. So, plenty to keep the company busy in the coming months. The growth of Domotz shows just how important not just networking as a platform has become, but also as a service it’s become necessary to make sure installs run smoothly and deliver new opportunities to installers to offer service contracts with genuine value.

One of Domotz’s most visible partners in the UK market has been Krika and the company also underlines that networks are going to face stiff challenges as the amount of products reliant on connectivity increases. Krika underlines the advantages of using a dedicated product like its Krika One to host the Domotz Agent as it offers greater reliability and less chance of interruption via an up-grade or failure by other devices such as a PC. At CEDIA Expo this year, Control4 announced that the BakPak remote management platform is now available on more devices including the WK and WX access points and PowerPak Power Distribution Units (PDUs). Brad argues, “The complement of the management software and hardware helps dealers provide support for the performance demands of the smart home and their customers. For example, the WR-1 router features BakPak and also supports 802.11ac Wave 2 wireless and 500 Mbps of WAN-to-LAN throughput, blending faster speeds, optimal coverage, and reliability to highperforming smart home devices. It also enables multiple connected devices to maximise the bandwidth in the home more efficiently through multi-user multiple-input, multiple-output (MU-MIMO).” In terms of remote management, Brads adds, “Control4 has worked to provide dealers with the ability to design and install both wired and wireless networking solutions that provide visibility and control at both the network and automation device level for both Control4 products and third-party devices in the BakPak remote management platform.” RGB Communications underlines advantages of Pakedge’s BakPak Cloud management abilities. BakPak allows in-depth monitoring of network devices and control systems, providing alerts, automated network repair and mapping alongside configuration management, report logging, backup and restore functionality. Troubleshooting is covered with the Triplex feature that determines the cause of the problem in case of a network outage or configuration error. BakPak software visualisation creates digital versions of hardware devices in the network that act like physical units. However, these digital units can be grouped and managed in ways not possible with physical units. For example, some or all of the Pakedge power controllers can be combined with other power controllers and PoE switches within the network or across multiple networks to create new ‘super-controllers’. These can be treated as one unit and managed and operated as one for simplicity and efficiency.

With the BakPak App dealers can now manage all of their customer sites from a single web interface or mobile app. When a device falls off the network and goes offline, real-time alerts are sent to the BakPak app or can be set as SMS or email alerts, ensuring installers know about the problem before the customer. Firmware updates can be scheduled to fit in with customers’ needs. Other cool features with the Pakedge range include the Pakedge TruStream a technology that boosts network speeds to ensure peak performance for VoIP, streamed video and audio, Pakedge zones allow dealers to group types of traffic and provide quality of service (Qos) allowing high priority devices the attention they need. Dead spots in wireless coverage can be overcome with the Pakedge Sectormaxx found on Pakedge Wireless access points that feature boosting of the wireless output to its peak to ensure the best coverage possible. Invision distribution supplies and supports the Luxul range of professional grade IP networking solutions. The products are not available on-line and offer a complete line of solutions to simplify network design and deployment. News from Luxul this year is the company’s customer assurance programme, which provides a FOC network design service, complete with wiring topology and a recommended list of products. The certified design will provide installers with a list of both required and optional equipment. Roaming using active Roam Assist Technology is also a key part of the Luxul product range. The company says the XWC-1000 Wireless Controller uses Luxul’s Roam Assist technology to ensure seamless roaming of mobile client devices within wireless networks that use more than one WAP, while providing simple, centralised deployment of up to 16 Luxul APs through a setup wizard. With seamless roaming, installation simplicity and sensible pricing, Luxul says the XWC-1000 is purposebuilt to meet the needs of the residential and light commercial custom installation professional. The XWC-1000 is compatible with all Luxul APs, allowing installers to mix and match APs to maximise the performance and budget of each project. The XWC-1000 is available standalone, or in kits complete with APs and PoE hardware. Invision is also a supplier for the Domotz box. For Invision a significant recent upgrade is secure connections to ONVIF based IP cameras. With this function it is now possible to create secure connections to get image snapshots or short real-time video streaming out of any IP camera based on the ONVIF methodology. Through the same mechanism installers can now review IP camera video profiles or capabilities. It is also possible to send a soft-reboot command to the IP Camera. Also device IP address changes are now tracked, when the IP address of a monitored device changes, the activity is reported in the history tab of the device itself. This makes it possible to configure an Alert (push notification or email) in the event of Device IP Address changes. This is useful when a certain device is expected to always have the same IP address (Static IP), but for some reason it gets a different IP address (e.g. firmware version upgrade, issue with the lease on the DHCP server, etc). Michael Short, global residential marketing manager at Crestron is keen to underline the abilities of the services available via myCreston.com. Michael argues, “One of the most compelling features of a Crestron system is the ability to remotely monitor and control a home’s lighting, climate, security, video and more from another location. myCrestron.com, is a

The Luxul XWC-1000 is custom made for the CI industry

Zyxel has introduced a range of hybrid network switches

Dynamic DNS service that furnishes a Crestron system with a friendly URL to enable constant remote access no matter how often an ISP changes the IP address. “Crestron dealers can manage unlimited client domains within a single account, with no need to worry about domains expiring from non-use. Personal myCrestron.com domains are maintained on Crestron servers to help ensure reliable, secure remote access to the Crestron system when needed. Once a system has been programmed and commissioned by the dealer/ programmer, it may be accessed from any Mac, PC, iPhone or other mobile device anywhere in the world. “For the dealer it means they can remotely manage and control an entire property from offsite. Solving issues from anywhere in the world, means clients problems are quickly fixed. It’s an amazing piece of software.” A name well known in the world of large-scale commercial networks is Zyxel, however the company also offers options that might be of interest to this market such as its Multy Plus, a platform designed to tackle the growing pains often experienced by SMBs and enable them to prioritise agility and security. The system offers business grade-mesh Wi-Fi that is said to be easy to use and boasts high security standards. The company says it’s a good solution for customers such as restaurants and hotels. Multy Plus comes packaged with hardware for wall, ceiling, T-bar, and desktop mounting plus a ‘stylish’ upright stand. “Small businesses have long been relying on commercial access points to provide wireless internet to guests,” says Bill Su, senior AVP of Zyxel’s Smart Living SBU. “It’s a far from optimal solution as wiring these APs takes a great deal of time and money. Managing them is equally difficult given their complex interfaces, which even experts can struggle with. “As a mesh solution, Multy Plus gets the job done better, with less work and less expenditure. It only requires placing two or more access points anywhere around the premises— no wired connections necessary—and its interface is straightforward enough that even non-IT staff can use it.” The device’s tri-band Wi-Fi and 5-GHz dedicated backhaul offer speeds of up to 1,733 Mbps across 5,000 square feet via nine internal antennas. The system also comes with its own cybersecurity with AiShield, a dedicated security app that takes numerous GUI functions and packages them for convenient mobile use. AiShield’s security features include access control, which lets users restrict access to tens of thousands of categories of inappropriate websites and up to 500 apps.

Multy Plus joins similar products already available from Zyxel including for home users and service providers— Multy X and Multy Pro. The company has also recently launched a new App and hybrid switch series aimed at both commercial properties/buildings and large scale domestic networks. The new app partners the Nebula cloud management platform which in turn can partner two series of hybrid switches. The Nebula app allows for easier end-to-end installation and management of Wi-Fi networks and includes a comprehensive range of configuration settings, real-time information and troubleshooting tools – all in place to make the system easy to use and save time overall. Zyxel says its two new switches, the GS1920v2 and XGS1930, offer an improved user experience and bring about the next evolution of switch management, without the need for extra hardware or expensive software. The GS1920v2 series is the next evolution of the GS1920 series and the XGS1930 series adds a smart managed 10G uplink switch range to the existing switch portfolio. The GS1920v2 series includes new features and functions along with an eight-port fanless PoE model that is designed to be versatile, cost-effective, and has a smaller port count. Other improvements have been made to the switches’ design, including a quick restore button, slick carbonstyle front, and improved depths for the larger models, allowing them to fit in a wider range of racks for which space and unit depth have been a concern. TrendNet is a pure networking company that offers wide range of solutions. The maker supplies more than 350 networking and surveillance products in the UK, including the Domotz Pro Box. It’s most popular product categories are PoE switches, 10g/multi-gig, indoor and outdoor access points, injectors, extenders and PoE Powerline. The company also offers switches, injectors, extenders, fibre, SFPs and IP cameras/NVRs. The brand is available from distributors Northamber, Exertis, Ingram, and ADI. There is also a free partner program for installers purchasing a minimum of £1,000 in TRENDnet products each quarter. Benefits include product discounts, a 30% off demo program and direct access to the level three support team based in the US. There is a local team in the UK to handle customer service and sales support (including basic pre-sales and RMA support). For technical support, all customers have access to a free online help desk ticket system as well as the 24-hour toll-free tech support centre. Taking the customer’s network to remote buildings and garden offices is made more simple thanks to Ubiquiti’s UniFi range of enterprise-class waterproof and fully managed outdoor AP’s, says supplier Alltrade. Alltrade’s technical director for CI, Lee Harding, says, “For larger homes with outbuildings or garages, events or multiple commercial units on the same site, the UniFi UAP Outdoor APs offer unrivalled range and durability. They are purpose built for outdoor environments, including water ingress protection and UV resistance, and offer unrivalled distance for two-way network communication.

Ubiquiti’s strength in networking is underlined by Alltrade

They can be installed as a single AP or part of a larger UniFi Mesh network, with full network management control thanks to the UniFi Controller software.” The UniFi Outdoor UAP-AC-M and UniFi Outdoor UAPAC-M-PRO are high performance Wide-Area Mesh Access Points with speed up to 1300Mbps. The standard UAP-AC-M is described as a compact, slimline device running simultaneous Dual Band delivering 2x2 MIMO at speeds of up to 300Mbps on 2.4GHz and 450Mps on the 5Ghz carrier. This model includes adjustable antennas giving the option of spotbeam coverage in areas with a high density of APs and clients. For applications requiring 3x3 MIMO rate and close-in omni-directional coverage, the UAP-AC-M-PRO offers speeds of up to 1300Mbps on the 5GHz carrier. Both devices take advantage of Mesh technology to multi-hop the signal for longer range network coverage and are quick to install for temporary events. Power supply is 802.3af PoE (with passive 24v PoE option on the basic model) and the PRO models offers dual Ethernet ports to connect other PoE network devices such as IP cameras. Like all APs in the UniFi range, the UAP-Outdoor range is fully managed using Ubiquiti’s UniFi Controller, the free web-browser based network management interface. Alltrade says UniFi Controller gives installers a full picture of the network, wireless coverage, connected devices and user traffic and allows system set-up graphically on a floor-plan of the property. Installers can lock-out users or devices, limit bandwidth, time or data per user. The system allows you to offer guest access, set alerts, check signal strength, change transmit power and a host of network management features normally associated with high-end wireless management software. For commercial installations, the UniFi Controller has builtin support for billing integration using major credit cards, and voucher-based authentication. Wall and pole mount kits are supplied to install the UAP Outdoor units in a range on environments.

A new range of wireless network devices has been launched this year by Antiference. The supplier says Clear Flow demonstrates a simple, easy to use platform for creating and extending Wi-Fi networks. At the heart of the range is the core gateway (CFGWPOE) which can be used to manage, control and distribute the network, however for smaller networks each device can be programmed individually using a smart device or laptop. Each product has the programming software pre-installed meaning additional programming devices or software is not required making Clear Flow an appealing option due to the ease of set up. The Clear Flow range has several strings including the ceiling access points (AIR) with single and dual band options within the range and a selection of bandwidth options from 300Mbps (AIR 3) up to 1750Mbps (AIR PRO). These devices are designed to mount on the ceiling to offer the best coverage in the building. The most popular part of the Clear Flow range are the in-wall access points (WAP) which offer a neat solution for providing Wi-Fi from a single gang wall plate. These screwless fronted wall plates feature a telephone point (WAPT) or a 5V 1A USB charger (WAPU) in addition to the hard-wired Ethernet port for connection to a laptop or smart TV for example. Also included in the range are the bridge (BEAM) extenders allowing the wireless extension of a network – usually from building to building – with ranges up to 10Km. With the options to bridge on the 2.4GHz (BEAM 2) or the 5.8GHz (BEAM 5) these devices offer a solution for wireless communication with CCTV or wireless access in remote locations. The Clear Switch Ethernet switch range from Antiference compliments the range of wireless devices by providing Gb data with 48V PoE to power any Clear Flow device.

Essential Install | Habitech

Habitech is upping its game in the media room and dedicated cinema areas

Habitech Techfest showcases emphasis on high-quality

Habitech’s recent Techfest open days initiative revealed a serious up-grade to the company’s demonstration facilities and also a focus on delivering towards the top end of the market. The most striking thing about the new demonstration facilities are the two cinemas, one completely and the larger existing cinema offering a complete upgrade. Habitech was particularly keen to underline its new deal with U.S cinema design company CinemaTech. In its home market of America the company has an impressive track record of providing a complete design service including seats and acoustic treatment for some of the most high-profile cinemas in the country and is now bringing some of its services to the UK via Habitech. Currently, CinemaTech will be giving UK installers the benefit of its complete design service and acoustic treatments, and also EI can exclusively reveal the German made range of chairs will also be available. It was thought that UK fire regs may delay the role out of this aspect of the service, however, Alexandria Murphy, executive vice president of CinemaTech, tells EI, “Due to the overwhelming response at the event, we immediately reviewed requirements with our German factory to see how we could make the seating UK accepted and were able the make the foam changes. Habitech should have several demo seats on display in the near future.” This will be a welcome addition as installer feedback on the chairs is that they are very good. However, as of right now visitors can experience the CinemaTech effect in both Habitech’s cinemas. In the brand new Sonance Reference, a bespoke design has been created using CinemaTech’s reflecting, absorbing and diffusing panels, arranged on a sub-frame to generate optimal acoustics, and then decorated/ covered with a custom mix of design features and finishes. This cinema delivers a discreet 7.2.2 Sonance Cinema Reference speaker system, driven by ARCAM processing and Sonance amplifiers. The Projecta HD Progressive 1.1 Contrast Perf acoustically transparent vinyl projection screen, which has been developed with microscopically smooth surface consistency for resolutions up to 16K, is a strong partner for JVC’s new 8K e-shift DLA-NX9 projector which inhabits the cinema. Clearly making a pitch for the high-quality media living room part of the market, this new cinema is impressive, a very natural and relaxing experience with the system not being too over powering, but still offering a strong performance, set very much to look and feel like a living room. Timmi Thorsen, sales manager at the company underlined that it’s the company’s ambition to really focus in on this type of area offering a high-quality media room experience into this expanding part of the market. Timmi

also told EI that a new London based cinema experience is being worked right now which the company hopes to have ready in February of next year, more on that when we get it. Habitech has also refurbished its 14-seat flagship theatre with CinemaTech treatment and recalibrated the systems, including the resident fully-discreet Wisdom 9.4.4 system to demonstrate compelling home cinema detail and dynamics for larger more dedicate cinemas. This cinema has now reached its full potential and delivers a strong demo environment for dealers. Another up-graded demo space in this part of the showroom offers a chance to experience CinemaTech’s custom wall panels surrounding Sonance VP 46/66/86 inwalls. Around a TV, the LCR channels of a discreet Sonance Soundbar - soon to be available in 55/65/75 and 80in widths – are accompanied by rear in-ceilings, making high-quality low-profile AV straight-forward to install. Also in this room, the IS4 3-way invisible speakers generate hidden full-range audio detail from behind a thin layer of plaster on the back wall. One of the less obvious highlights of the event and certainly of this are, the new Wisdom P2M and P4M pointsource on-wall speakers are now joined by the slender S10 sub design, which at only 4.5in (116mm) deep can be used in freestanding upright, down-firing or up-firing positions, sliding discreetly under sofas for instance. These on-wall designs have real musicality to them, great fun to listen to and a really strong mix of Hi-Fi sensibility meeting CI design. Elsewhere TechFest guests were introduced to Legrand’s MyHome_Up plug-and-play automation system. Aimed primarily at MDU developers, it delivers control over lights, heating, security, AV, blinds etc without specialist AV programming and installs using standard wiring techniques and DIN-rail modules. A panoply of 10G-and-up networking technologies was displayed on the WyreStorm wall, created as a walk-through step-up guide, starting at HDBT (via its latest H2X matrix), through AVoIP via WyreStorm’s NHD400/600 tech, to its CAB HAOC-10 18Gbps Active Optical HDMI links. The prize for the most colourful display had to go to the Yamaha MusicCast wall, showcasing the design and integration versatility, as well as the famous audio quality of this established alternative to the S-word. Dahua’s new facial recognition software for its 5000 series NVRs was also on show, check out detail in our security feature in this issue. Also in this issue find out more about what Ruckus can offer installers from a networking perspective. Habitech 01256 638500, habitech.co.uk

Essential Install | Integrated TVs

The scene is set for tantalising TV

EI views some of the latest specialist TV options that set themselves apart from the crowd.

Aquavision has expanded its appeal to the whole home, not just the wet areas

Luxury mirror TV manufacturer AGATH continues to supply solutions into the commercial and residential markets, with 2018 seeing a range of technologies employed across its family designed to offer clients beauty and functionality. The seventh glass type option now available is called Ultra Clear. This option gives the ultimate in TV and movie image quality available from a mirror finish, says the maker. At ISE this year, Ultra Clear featured on the impressive 98in 4K mirror TV on AGATH’s stand. Supplier of the brand into the UK, Custom AV Distribution (CAVD) says that for all 4K displays, Ultra Clear looks stunning, comes with a frame and is suited to the brighter rooms in a property. AGATH’s Mirror Touch technology also won Dedicated Touch Screen of the Year at this year’s Smart Building Awards. Available on all sizes of screens, this solution is suited for many applications around the home where the screen can be used for the control system negating the need for another smaller touchscreen on the same wall or in the same room. Mirror Touch can be controlled even with wet hands, in a kitchen or bathroom. Christophe

Poitevin, MD of AGATH, says, “There are many types of touchscreen technologies, as seen on phones, laptops and the like, at AGATH we spent many months in R&D to find the perfect interface to integrate between our displays and mirrors”. Lastly, a brand-new model of mirror TV is now available, with promo videos doing the rounds on social media and YouTube. The VAL4, which stands for Vision & Luxury (the four representing the 43in model) was created to provide a strong value 1080P AGATH mirror TV for commercial projects. An on-wall solution with options to have an attractive solid Corian surround, or ultra-smart wooden or metal frames to hide all TV edges and cables is also available. ProofVision has announced a new distribution deal with OneAV

A definite pioneer of the specialist TV market is of course Aquavision. Part of the company’s success lies in keeping the product line fresh with new ideas and technologies, and most recently the company has acquired state-of-the-art glass printing technology, meaning that all of the glass printing is now done in-house by a dedicated design team at Aquavision HQ. As a result of this new technology, the company now has the capability to take on larger scale bespoke orders, with the machine able to print a much larger surface area of glass than could be offered before. Whatever is printed on the glass is also completely customisable. Aquavision can colour match tile patterns, add a company logo and even pictures meaning that the customer can have a completely unique product. On the model front, the latest release is the updated Horizon Outdoor TV series, new for this year. Designed for use around the swimming pool, patio, garden, yacht or any other outdoor space, the Horizon is based on the Silhouette style, but with the addition of an attractive extruded aluminium frame. Using Aquavision’s also

AGATH is combining luxury TV with touchscreen technology

recently updated Pinnacle Smart television platform, the maker says the family is fully equipped to take on any integration challenge. Notable features include 178° viewing angle, full IP control, discreet IR codes, 2x HDMI Inputs (capable of receiving 1080p or 4K UHD inputs, regardless of screen resolution), an Android processor and multiple USB slots. The Horizon can come in either black or white and comes in sizes 32in, 43in, 55in, 65in, 85in and 100in. All offer a high quality, anti-reflective LED screen and anti-glare glass. Horizon also incorporates an optional accessory slot for Balan’s, DM receivers, and HDBaseT receivers, enabling integration with proprietary band operating systems whilst still retaining its waterproof qualities. There are also optional speaker brackets for mounting a choice of speakers either on the sides or below each screen. Fully IP66 rated, the TVs provide protection against water, dust, sand, moisture and insects, and can withstand temperatures between -40°C (-40°F) and 110°C (230°F). The set can survive such temperature ranges via its CTM (Comprehensive Thermal Management), which constantly monitors humidity and temperature, automatically adjusting where necessary. The range also offers Aquavision’s ADST (Advanced Daylight Sensing Technology) which checks and automatically adjusts screen brightness to ambient light levels to enhance the viewing experience as well as prolonging the life of the set. One of the suppliers of the brand into the UK is Habitech and the distributor argues that despite the growth in smart appliances and the IoT revolution, the TV is still the primary object of home tech desire. Habitech argues that Aquavision is not only priced perfectly for maximum return, it’s designed primarily for the most discreet in-wall integration, a step-up in luxury beyond on-wall. The distributor underlines that the family has evolved to be far more than a wet area TV, but an impressive luxury brand suitable for any room in the house. Particularly pertinent now the new printing service is available, taking integration and design a step further.

The Sony Z9 offering impressive size and performance

Habitech is stocking as many as five Aquavision ranges as standard, spanning screen sizes from 16in to 85in at up to 4K resolution, as well as custom specification options. ProofVision has continued to press its case with a new distribution deal with OneAV. Offering its range of outdoor TVs and indoor waterproof electronics via OneAV, ProofVision is keen to reach more customers in the custom installation channel with its affordable waterresistant products. The maker argues that until now, in this rapidly growing product category, those looking to buy waterproof electronics have had limited choice, particularly at the more affordable end of the market. An issue which this new deal is looking to fix. James Trumper, sales director at OneAV, says, “We are extremely pleased that ProofVision has partnered with our company, as they deliver technically excellent and highquality products at a reasonably price which matches the OneAV brand promise exactly.” William Uttley, founder and CEO of ProofVision, adds, “We are very excited to be working with OneAV to better service the AV market and enable more people to have the opportunity to experience our products.” The partnership has also inspired and influenced new product development from ProofVision – a TV which

will be compatible with HDANYWHERE HDBaseT video distribution systems. More news on this as we get it. Another specialist brand, CoolVision has recently introduced its Smart Home Kitchen Media Centre with Digital TV. An innovative fusion of TV and tablet technology with a simple user interface, the product is designed to pull together all elements of day-to-day living into one place. Designed to fit into standard 600mm tall units, or wall cupboard microwave/appliance locations, the unit is designed to have the look and feel of an upmarket appliance and fits a 21.5in high brightness touch screen panel in the centre. Hanging from the top with industry standard hinges, all cables are managed by a neat top shelf mountable junction box meaning there is no loss of cupboard space. The unit includes a built in DVB T2 tuner, allowing receiving of Freeview HD with a comprehensive EPG and recording function. In this instance the unit can be used like a conventional TV, however returning to the home page allows interface with day to day apps available from Google’s app store. Easy navigation buttons allow quick access home automation (lighting/heating and other IOT appliances), security apps, social media and shopping. A front facing camera allows barcode scanning, and similar functionality that users would get with an Android based smart device.

Samsung is showcasing the image quality of the 8K Q900R

Distributor news Distributor AWE has for several years made the supply of top-end and specialist TVs a big part of its offering. This continues via brands such as Panasonic, LG, Samsung and Sony, most recently showcased at the company’s Smart Home Expo. Perhaps the star of the show was the new Samsung QLED 8K TV. With screens ranging from 65in to 85in, this is one of a new generation of sets looking to take viewing to a new level. EI will admit to feeling a little cynical earlier in the year when all the hype around 8K kicked into gear. However, having now seen the Samsung and understood a little more how the tech actually works, they are definitely worth checking out. Basically, the Samsung creates 8K images using a reverse engineered AI algorithm which ‘knows’ how to reduce native 8K down to 4K, and so just reverses that process. The idea is to take any guess work out of the up-scaling and in demo it does provide a stunningly lifelike image. So how will it cope in the real world with people throwing YouTube, Netflix, Sky and terrestrial signals at it? Well pretty well actually, as the set can also detect how much of an upgrade is possible with each feed and adjust accordingly. Samsung’s Quantum Processor 8K not only intelligently optimises picture but sound too. When not in use, the TV blends into the home thanks to its Ambient Mode function. Also still available is Samsung’s ‘The Frame’ which combines UHD TV performance and functionality with the ability to enhance a residential space, as its Art Mode function transforms the TV into a realistic picture frame complete with artwork when the TV is not in use. The SmartView app allows content to be controlled, and personal photos can be uploaded via smart devices, whilst a built-in motion sensor detects personal presence and turns the screen off to save energy. The Frame’s interchangeable custom frame bezels are available in black as standard, as well as walnut, beige wood and white colour finishes. The Near-Invisible cable also has the flexibility to be placed almost anywhere in the room because the single, transparent optical cable connects to the One Connect

Box which itself connects to all external devices. Paired with a Quad Core Processor, the Smart Hub provides access to a variety of different content sources, allowing users to switch between apps and stream online video games. The Frame also offers UHD upscaling to enhance standard and HD content. AWE is also keen to highlight the Sony Master Series OLED AF9 and LCD ZF9. These TVs feature Sony’s new Picture Processor X1 Ultimate, which enhances the brightness, colour, and detail of each object on the screen for realistic pictures. Paired with Pixel Contrast Booster and a TRILUMINOS Display, colour contrast is further enhanced. Sony also offers its intriguing Acoustic Surface technology which vibrates the display creating audio direct from the screen. This tech is particularly good at delivering clear vocals as the sound genuinely comes direct from the people speaking or singing. Its also possible to use the screen as a centre channel in a surround sound set up. These sets also boast Motionflow XR to cut down on blur in fast moving scenes or sport. Both the AF9 and ZF9 can be controlled with Android Oreo and Amazon Alexa, and are compatible with a variety of HDR formats, including HDR10, Hybrid LogGamma and Dolby Vision. AWE argues that the new Panasonic Master 4K Pro HDR TV ensures the picture looks just the way it should do, with a wide range of features. Panasonic’s Wide Colour Phosphor Technology is said to be capable of generating subtle, naturally toned images with accurate detail, whilst the Auto Brightness Enhancer adjusts video in response to ambient light to enhance HDR. Backlit control and signal processing combine for strong contrast and brightness, which also produces image depth. The Panasonic Master HDR TV can be controlled via Bluetooth Audio Link which connects a wireless speaker to the TV display, without the need for a complicated audio setup. It is also compatible with 4K video streaming from third-party providers, including YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video. The LG Signature Wallpaper OLED TV delivers a technical design first. The ultra-thin panel screen sits just 4mm from the wall the screen, whilst all the TV’s technology, speakers, and connections are housed in a separate Dolby Atmos OLED Hub. LG’s OLED pixels can completely switch off, meaning that no light is emitted or passing through the pixel to create an accurate and rich colour display. A TV brand which has always pursued a luxury and design-led approach, is Loewe. At the start of this year, the brand moved its specialist distribution partner from AWE to Pulse Cinemas and is seeking to really underline its credentials as an interior design friendly brand, but also delivers on the technology. Attractively finished aluminium, bespoke acoustic fabrics and hand-finished oak, hide cutting-edge tech with the latest OLED panels, HDR including Dolby Vision and Loewe’s proprietary software and OS. Loewe says it offers one of the widest ranges available both in terms of design style and size with screens from 32in up to 77in, together with an enviable choice of bespoke TV stands and wall mounts. Integration with control systems is covered with IP connectivity including drivers for Control4, Crestron and Savant. Loewe TVs are also able to integrate into a KNX environment via the ISE Smart Connect KNX module allowing a wide range of scenarios to be programmed. Documentation to support installers is freely available including IR HEX codes, RS232 spec, API and CAD drawings.

Essential Install | Integrated TVs

For simpler installs, integrated soundbars act as a clutter-free centre speaker and the TV’s integrated 5.1 Dolby de-coder enables expansion of the audio system. Cable management has always been a focus for Loewe; within the back of the TV, all cables can be hidden and channelled out at a single exit point. Loewe TV stands include cable management too, with cabling hidden within the stand. Attention to detail extends to accessories such as the IR pass through cable which negates any need for unsightly IR buds. Current range highlights include the bild 7 range featuring a motorised screen lift which glides up to reveal a 120W soundbar on switch-on and then hides it away when switched off. Bild 7 also has the option of motorised floor and table stands, which deliver the ideal the viewing angle. Launched at IFA this year was integration of the Loewe OS with the Vogel Nest motion wall mount, allowing the motorised Vogel mount to be operated with the Loewe remote control. The Vogel mount will automatically angle the TV to the required angle on switch-on and return flat to the wall on switch-off. There is also manual adjustment with the remote and six pre-sets. Another new feature is Mimi Defined, where Loewe claims to have become the only manufacturer with TV sound personalisation. Designed in particular to help those whose hearing is impaired or is losing its focus, the set can adjust to compensate adapting to the user’s hearing ability, bringing back the full variety and complex detail of sound. Basically, Mimi processing looks to replicate the function of the inner ear, emphasising certain information in the audio signal. The process is designed to ease the burden on the ear and ensure more information reaches the brain. Instead of needing to increase volume, the technology replicates processes that have deteriorated over time, leading to a natural restoration of detail, richness, and contrast. Loewe also underlines that its pricing and margins are much more stable than mass market TV brands, enabling installers to specify with confidence. Invision UK is another distributor which has built part of its rep on the TV sector and this continues. Invision recommends installers take a look at the Sony Pro ranges, in particular the new BZ range which has now been released with upgrades. Now using the X1 4K HDR Processor to reproduce enhanced depth, textures and natural colours, pure colours at higher brightness levels are now delivered. With full IP control and a five-year swap-out warranty exclusive to Invision UK via Sony Prime’s dedicated support team, this really makes Sony Professional the integrator’s choice for TV, says Invision. Also highlighted is the LG E8 OLED which brings 4K HDR Ultra HD certified with Dolby Vision. The set uses the Alpha 9 intelligent processor which is the only OLED specific chipset and is exclusive to LG. The eye-catching Floating Illusion design and full IP control with Control4 SDDP makes this a decent choice for high-end installs. Invision is also offering access to the full Samsung QLED 8K range. In other Samsung news, earlier this year the company announced that its 2018 QLED line-up will feature the Bixby voice assistant, the company’s answer to the Google Assistant, Alexa and Siri. Using Bixby on the TV, users can search for content, change inputs and picture settings, and also control smart home devices. In order to communicate with the TVs, users talk to their remote. In addition to Bixby’s ability to control smart home devices, the QLED line-up can also act as a SmartThings hub. That means thermostats, lights, security cameras and appliances compatible with the SmartThings platform can be connected directly to the TV for control through the SmartThings app or through other control systems.

News direct from LG comes in the form of the availability of its AI ThinQ technology included in some of its new sets. You may have seen the TV ads for this range. LG TVs with AI ThinQ have the Google Assistant built in, so users can control compatible smart home devices using just voice. Also compatible with Alexa devices, LG’s idea is to create a centre for a smart home and beyond. Philips is a TV brand which always had a rep for producing something different. Remember its super wide cinema screen concept from a few years back? Well the brand has a new lease of life being produced under license by TP Vision and the project is really starting to bear some fruit. At IFA this year, the brand highlighted its work with Bowers & Wilkins highlighting the OLED+ 903 TV – the first set to benefit from the collaboration. The OLED+ 903 launched this October in 55in and 65in models offers the benefits of the up-to-date OLED technology working with a second generation version of the Philips P5 Perfect Processing Engine and the three-sided Ambilight system. The set has the latest 2018 OLED panel offering a 10% increase in light output to a peak of 1000 Nits. High peak light output and OLED’s infinite black level performance provide strong contrast and are important for getting the most from HDR. TP Vision has also become the third manufacturer to join the HDR10+ alliance and the OLED+ 903 is one of Philips’ first sets to offer HDR+ performance. The set also includes Perfect Natural Reality tech which uses a contrast algorithm in combination with the P5’s existing local and global contrast enhancement systems. This tech continually calculates how to increase source quality, brightness, sharpness and contrast performance to give SDR a shot in the arm. The OLED+ 903 offers a Bowers & Wilkins’ engineering audio pallet featuring new drivers throughout, mounted in larger, more rigid and dedicated enclosures. The rear bass enclosure offers a larger low frequency drive unit with larger twin passive radiators. All are mounted in a bigger enclosure, with an increased internal volume and additional ribs for extra stiffness. Also, the twin tweeter/ mid-range units are now forward rather than downward firing. Also in place is a new 19in titanium tweeter and a glass-fibre mid-range – both mounted within their own sealed areas within the driver enclosure. Bowers & Wilkins has also optimised the OLED+ 903’s DSP functionality, while amplification and the overall power output has remained at 50W. Bass performance has also increased, but remains clean and accurate.

Essential Install | Security

Alltrade is taking it to the max with recent product introductions

We sell sanctuary

EI assess some of the options to provide safety, peace of mind and extra functionality to clients. Aldous Systems supplies and supports the 2N brand in the UK and underlines the qualities of the IP based Verso intercom. With option’s including black or stainless-steel finishes, the platform was developed as a modular system as the Verso base unit works via IP and can be configured for specific requirements. Optional modular components include multiple buttons, wide-angle camera, keypad, RFID reader, touch display, Bluetooth, fingerprint reader and induction loop modules. The Verso includes visual alerts, is expandable up to 146 buttons, and was designed to bring a new level of functionality and elegance to the 2N range of door intercoms, together creating a fully integrated professional door communication system, which provides audio and video communication via the SIP protocol. The 2N 7in Android touch-screen has been customised to create an intuitive interface for door communication and controls. It comes with an integrated microphone and two-way speaker and multi-coloured LED door status indicator. The industrial grade design allows the unit to be used in a variety of locations including homes, hotels and flats. Using the buttons on the touch-screen, users can not only initiate a conversation with visitors, but also unlock the door or turn on lights in the corridor or entry hall. Home owners can also monitor video from the intercom’s inbuilt camera and if required have a constant video stream showing what’s happening in front of the building. The unit is designed to remain powered up 24/7 and can be customised with third-party apps using an ‘unlocking license’ which opens up a wide range of usage scenarios. 2N offers a variety of interoperable products. With the use of the Access Control Units, access can be limited/ monitored both inside and outside buildings and can be used in tandem with the IP Verso.

Crestron underlines that it integrates with any thirdparty security system bringing all security elements such as alarms, door entry, CCTV cameras, security gates and intercom systems together. Crestron’s latest range of touch screens and hand-held remotes have the ability to operate as an interface using built in microphones, speakers and voice control and a full Crestron system can enable any TV to act as a CCTV monitor. Crestron systems include a quad-view video processor, enabling homeowners to see visitors and what they are carrying from four angles at once, or view up to four different locations in the house at the same time. While away from the home the Crestron app turns a handheld smart devices into Crestron touch-screens, enabling whole home control including AV, lighting, shades, HVAC, security and other systems. Newer name on the block, Netatmo launched its Smart Smoke Alarm at IFA, part of a wider range of security and safety focused products. The Smart Smoke Alarm boasts an 85 Decibel alarm and sends push notifications to the user’s smartphone, indicating the room with a message such as ‘smoke detected in the living room’. Users can also activate a ‘hush’ feature to silence the alarm from their phone, or on the device itself. The product comes with a 10-year guaranteed battery and a self-check feature, with reports sent via the app. The company’s Smart Outdoor Camera can distinguish people, animals and cars and gives access to all its features without charging any subscription fees. Alerts let the user know what is happening outside the property and there is also a live streaming feature. The camera has day and night modes, via infra-red or floodlight. The smart floodlight can be switched on manually in the app or set to switch on when it detects a person, car or animal - or for all three.

Essential Install | Security

The company also has an indoor camera, with the Welcome delivering home intruder alerts direct to a smartphone. Instead of motion alerts which require watching of the footage, Netatmo cameras send an immediate alert if an intruder has been detected, complete with a picture and a video recording. The camera’s setup is straightforward: place the camera indoors, facing the entrance, plug it in and download the App. Identify those allowed entry with a simple click. With smart thermostats and in-door air quality systems rounding out the family, all the company’s products are aimed at professional installers and have certification schemes to qualify companies to become installation partners. Mining a similar vein to the Nest proposition, the range could have potential for entry level projects and systems or MDU. Also providing products into a similar sector, the latest development in home security from supplier ERA is its DoorCam smart home Wi-Fi video doorbell. Using a smartphone app, DoorCam allows householders to view callers and talk to them in real time, whether they’re home or not. With ease of operation in mind, once DoorCam is wired in, the householder can activate the Wi-Fi chime which comes as standard. This means a chime will sound in the house, with adjustable sound, volume and light function, eliminating the need to have a smartphone to hand to be aware of the activation. DoorCam allows for two-way talk and provides adjustable volume, brightness and colour. The camera has a 180° field of view and records in 720p and is available in black or white. The product also has infrared night vision with optional motion detection and ability to customise focus to a specific area. Sitting on the home’s existing Wi-Fi, via its own app, the company is also working on integrating with ERA’s HomeGuard cloud-based alarm app. There are no cloud-based recording fees for the first 12 months, and once fees are introduced, there will always be a free option dependent upon the level of recording required. Training and technical support are also supplied for the whole range. Alltrade has strengthened its CCTV and alarm portfolio with new products from MaxxOne. The MaxxOne Kite smart alarm system is presented as an affordable, wireless, app-controlled intruder alarm packed with features normally found on more premium intruder detection systems. This includes compatibility with network cameras and smart plug devices, simple QR-pairing and unlimited expandability with sensors and other accessories. Network connectivity options for the KITE control panel include hard-wired Ethernet LAN, Wi-Fi and cellular, and the entire KITE system is app controllable. Set-up is as simple as scanning the QR code on additional sensors and accessories using the app LILIN has added remote monitoring capabilities with its Device Hub

interface. The system is supplied with a built-in battery back-up that will keep the system live for up to eight hours in the event of power interruption. There are also two new affordable, high-spec MaxxOne IP cameras. The Ultra 265 M1P-C3D50F is an IP67 rated dome camera with five Megapixel (2592 x 1944) resolution, a 2.8mm fixed lens for wide angle coverage and 30m IR range at night. Features include digital noise reduction, optional PoE power supply and a built-in microphone. For longer range surveillance, the MaxxOne 2 Ultrapixel M1P-C5F20F bullet camera has a 4mm fixed lens and an IR range up to 50m. IP67 rated for outdoor conditions, this IP camera offers full colour nightvision, onboard storage with a 128GB compatible Micro SD card slot and a host of smart features including a tampering alarm and four-area motion detection. Popular camera brand LILIN has added a number of new P-Iris bullet camera models to its Z series range, in both 1080P and 4MP resolutions. All LILIN P-Iris cameras are capable of 30FPS at 1080P or 20FPS at 4MP and have a motorised lens for auto-zoom/focus, allowing installers to mount the camera and focus remotely via browser or app. All LILIN P-Iris cameras have Intelligent Video System (IVS) built-in including tampering and motion detection alarms, 3D noise reduction, 2D HDR, day/night IR cut filter, two-way audio support, privacy masking and are ONVIF Profile S conformant. The new ZMR8122X2-P/ZMR8142X2-P cameras are a variation on the existing ZMR8122X-P / ZMR8142X-P cameras, with the ‘X2’ denoting the new 7-22mm lens. The new chassis of the ZMR7422X-P series enables a 50M IR distance and features LILIN’s new rain repellent glass technology to increase visibility in poor weather conditions. Both 2.8-12mm and 7-22mm lens options are available for this chassis. The maker has also introduced two new turret cameras, the MR6522E2 and MR6542E4, in resolutions of 1080P and 4MP. The separated camera and IR modules reduce the potential IR reflection in comparison to the traditional dome chassis. The MR6522E2 features a 2.8mm fixed lens, able to capture a 109° wide angle of view, and is capable of recording at 30FPS at 1080P. The MR6542E4 is a 4MP camera with a maximum 20FPS recording at full resolution. This model features a fixed 4mm lens. Both models include IVS capability, including tripwire, tampering and advanced motion detection alarms, 30M IR distance, three-way gimbal for range of mounting options, SenseUp+, 3D noise reduction, 2D HDR, IP66, vandal resistant chassis and are also ONVIF Profile S conformant. Also new is LILIN’s Device Hub solution which adds remote monitoring to reboot IP devices including cameras and NVRs and receive push notifications should a product drop offline. Accessible via both web browser and mobile app, the Hub shows the status of all IP devices on a site, which can be organised by client and then site. The approach uses a peer-to-peer connection and so no router configuration or port-forwarding is needed, this secure connection is enforced with HTTPS communication and encrypted database cloud computing. LILIN says adding IP products to the device hub is easy with its device scan, which locates all available devices and lets installers choose which ones to monitor. The device hub can be linked to a free LILIN cloud account, which can then be accessed on multiple web browsers and mobile devices. The LILIN brand is supplied and supported in the UK by Invision.

Dahua continues to increase its range and functionality

New security and comms options available from Savant

Habitech distribution continues with its supply of the Dahua brand by underlining new abilities to run the maker’s networked security cameras over much greater distances and upgrade legacy analogue systems to IP through easy plug and play installation. The new Dahua ePoE IP system supports up to 800 meters between the ePoE camera and the ePoE network switch or ePoE NVR with embedded switch. It is designed to overcome the limitation of traditional Ethernet and PoE (both restrict cable distances to 100 metres/328 feet between network ports) and eliminates the need for Ethernet extension devices or additional network switches. Dahua ePoE transmission offers 800m/10Mbps/13W or 300m/100Mbps/25.4W and is designed for analogue to IP migration using the LR1002 ePoE to BNC adaptor, which sends IP video, audio, control and power (4 in1) over existing coax cable. The Dahua ePoE range features plug and play set-up of ePoE Series IP Network Cameras with resolutions from 4 to 8MP, and in a range of form factors (bullet, dome, eyeball) and lens types. Smart video detection features include tripwire, intrusion, abandoned/missing detection, face detection and smart H.265+ encoding. Habitech’s ePoE Series DAH-NVR5816 network recorder offers eight green ePoE ports that support long-distance PoE transmission when connecting to ePoE cameras. An advanced H.265 chipset is deployed

to support 4K & H.265 decoding at a performance up to 16ch@1080P or 4ch@4K live view or playback. IVS features include face detection, smart h.265+ decoding, ANPR, POS and custom split. It’s also compatible with standard Ethernet or PoE cameras and switches. Dahua’s ePoE PFL2106-4ET-96 network switch has four ePoE ports that support long-distance PoE transmission (300m@100Mbps/800m@10Mbps/EoC) when connected with ePoE cameras. Savant has introduced a suite of entry solutions enabling Savant homeowners to see and communicate with anyone who approaches an entry point all accessible from within a single app—the same Savant Pro 8 interface that is already in use. The new entry services have been introduced as part of Savant’s latest 8.9 software and hardware release and enable homeowners to receive notifications within the Savant Pro App’s secure encrypted cloud connection, allowing them to respond and unlock the door or gate. Homeowners can also communicate via video intercom with anyone who approaches an entry point or monitor the status of an entry point, even without anyone ringing the bell. Savant’s entry solutions are designed to work both from inside the home or remotely all from within the Savant Pro 8 App for iOS and Android devices. In addition, the solution includes high-powered night vision, advanced motion detection with available notifications, and up to three months of video storage (data can be saved if needed) for events at the door. The Savant Pro App Entry service is designed so installers can also deliver a tailored user experience, including customisable buttons that can be assigned to any function within the Savant system such as door lock/ unlock, lights on/off, alarm trigger or instant access to Savant Scenes. On the hardware front, Savant partnered with 2N to develop an entry point experience, with hardware engineered to work seamlessly within the Savant ecosystem. Entry hardware options includes a small single-station solution with a doorbell and video camera or a larger interface with a keypad. Also available is a heavy-duty unit with an integrated keypad for applications such as remote gate entry that require extra durability. Preinstallation back-boxes are available for both surface and flush mounting options. “We were able to leverage our unique background in telecom services to create the Entry Point software including the required secure remote connection between the door station and the Savant Pro 8 App,” explains Savant CEO Robert Madonna. “We are confident that these remote entry products and services will address consumer demand and provide integrators with a compelling, secure solution for their clients.” Control4 recently launched its Intercom Anywhere to add everyday utility and capability to Control4 homes and take the ‘smart doorbell’ to a new level. The system offers in-the-home/away-from-the-home functionality and unifies access control, video surveillance, security, and interactive communication. On top of the ability to use mobile phones to see and talk to visitors at the door, Control4 Intercom Anywhere supports additional programming. For example, while in an Intercom Anywhere call, the user can turn on lights, unlock the door, open the gate or garage, disarm or trigger the alarm, or any other action uniquely enabled by the automation system. Homeowners can also quickly activate alerts such as sounding an alarm, locking all doors, or turning on all interior and exterior lighting for additional safety measures.

Increased people and vehicle recognition now available from Nortech

Pro-Vision Distribution, UK distributor of quality CCTV, access control and public address equipment had been proudly supporting EI’s security feature since 2010. Big news for the company recently was its acquisition in March by EET Europarts, one of Europe’s leading specialist technology distributors. The company says this is great news for the trade installer, as the product offering has grown substantially with an impressive portfolio covering numerous technologies. From five locations in the UK and Ireland with logistics based in Shrewsbury, EET Europarts can support requirements across a number of categories including security and access, storage and networking, consumer electronics and pro-AV/digital signage. The company stocks and support a large range of smart home products across wireless networking, security, cabling and automation. The company recommends readers browse the EET Europarts website to check out the complete offering. For larger or high traffic sites, Nortech is now offering smart people identification using mobile access technology. The Nedap MACE platform allows any access control system to use smartphones as access credentials. The platform consists of a cloud-based service, readers and the MACE app. The MACE app can receive and store multiple virtual identity credentials. The credentials can be presented to MACE readers using NFC, Bluetooth Low Energy or QR codes. The process of issuing these credentials is described as quick and easy, as no physical credentials need to be distributed. The virtual credentials are securely transferred to the MACE app via the cloud-based MACE server. Virtual access credentials can be allocated to users in one of many formats including Wiegand 26 format. A number of Nedap’s MACE products are now being supplied by Nortech. These include the MACE Reader MM, MACE Reader MM QR and the MACE Smart Slim Mobile Access Reader MM.

Nedap’s MACE Reader MM is a multi-technology reader designed to be used with the MACE app and MACE virtual credentials. It supports Bluetooth, NFC, smart cards and proximity cards. The reader is small enough to be mullion mounted and is configurable using a free downloadable tool that connects to the USB port. The MACE Reader MM QR provides all the features of the MACE Reader MM. In addition to these features, it includes a QR reader to read QR codes displayed on smartphones. The MACE Smart is a compact smartphone access control reader. It supports Bluetooth, NFC and smart cards. This reader enables the use of smartphones in any access control system, while continuing to support existing credentials that contain smart card technology. The reader is configurable using a free downloadable tool that connects to the USB to RS485 port. Like all Nedap systems, the MACE Reader MM, MACE Reader MM QR and MACE Smart support a number of well-established industry-standard protocols, such as Wiegand, clock and data and serial connections like RS485.

Find Your Voice

This month, experienced installer, Ashwin Shah, chairman and founder of Visual Systems Sales, part of the Myriad group established over a quarter of a century ago, looks at the future of voice control.

Ashwin believes voice control has a big future

As Home Automation technology grows more affordable we are seeing more interesting products and new technologies entering our homes; even those who are not necessarily ‘tech savvy’ but want the ’must have’ tech to aid them with their everyday tasks. Amazon, Google and others have introduced the world to voice control and home automation at an affordable price which is easy to use with no limitations of your age or your ability to use the technology. Alexa and Google allow users to ask them questions and control their devices and music playlist via Spotify, Google music etc., but the question is how can we take advantage of this AI and use it more in everyday life? With the help of clever control systems such as Crestron, Control4, RTI and Lutron we are able to integrate AI voice control taking control of lights and devices such as blinds and Sonos music speakers in our daily routine. Just imagine waking up and rather than finding your way to the light switch with one open eye, you can ask Alexa or Google to turn on the light, open the blinds and even switch on the heating for those cold winter mornings. But that’s not all, Alexa and Google will also tell you how your journey looks like to work and even switch your TV onto the SKY News channel for you, so you don’t miss any breaking news. The possibilities seem endless as more manufacturers buy into Alexa and Google and others to integrate them into their own technologies. At the beginning we will see technology used for simple commands such as ‘turn lights on/off’ but as the AI becomes more advanced and learns how we operate, we will be able to add new and exciting commands that will bring the smart home away from apps and more into the world of gestures and voice commands.

At Visual Systems we are at the for front of this new technology as we are seeking ways to make Alexa, Google and others more useful with the control systems we implant in our client’s smart homes and businesses. We advise our clients at the start of their build what is possible, it will enable us to bring all the technologies under one roof and bring them together so our clients can sit back, relax and just have endless hours of fun with the added convenience of using voice as the most powerful remote control ever. Unlike other technologies in recent years such as 3D TVs, I believe voice control will be here to stay for the long term. I am not saying it will replace the trusty remote control or our beloved touch screen control panel, but it will enable us to have an alternative way in which we interact with our home and business. Users need to understand that this is still a cloud-based system and uses the internet and for Alexa/Google Home and others to work affectively, it is important that the home has great coverage of Wi-Fi and broadband speed so the user is not waiting in the dark having asked to turn on the lights.

Habitech argues its cable offering is a clear winner

The CI super highway EI takes a look at some of the latest solutions for signal taming and treatment. Brought to market by CEDIA trade supplier FS Cables, the TruHD range of HDBaseT recommended data cables have now been independently tested in the UK for CPR compliance. The Construction Products Regulation (CPR) became a legal requirement in July 2017, affecting cables designed for permanent installation within domestic, residential and commercial buildings. CPR-compliant cables within the TruHD range have undergone testing by an independent test house, known as a Notified Body, and are now classified between Class Eca and B2ca. Cables in the family include Cat 5E, Cat 6 and Cat 6A, all of which have also been tested and approved by the HDBaseT Alliance. The HDBaseT standard guarantees their network performance with compatible equipment, ranging from video, audio, Ethernet, power and control. FS Cables says Full HD, 3D, 2K and 4K uncompressed video are supported, as are audio standards including Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD-Master Audio. TruHD Cat 6A is stocked on standard 500m reel sizes, with TruHD Cat 5E and Cat 6 supplied in 305m pull boxes for easy handling and stacking. Cat 5E and Cat 6 cables are available in either PVC or LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) in up to 10 different colours for easy identification.

For easy routing in larger installations, FS Cables highlights the TruHome HA bundled cables which combine multiple Cat 5E and Cat 6 cables, such as the TruHome HA5 cable comprised of two x HDBaseT Cat 6 UTP, one x HDBaseT Cat 5E UTP and two x TV100 Digital Coax cables, all within a distinctive pink jacket. All products are held in stock for next workingday delivery to most of mainland UK, free on orders over £100. The latest Tru Cables catalogue and CPR Guide for technical information on hundreds of other products, including lighting control, KNX, speaker cables, fibre, coaxes and more are now available direct from the company. Habitech is pointing to the advantages of Active Fibre Optic Cables (AOCs) which are able to overcome the distance limitation of copper cables, allowing for transmission distances of 100s of metres without compromising image resolution or quality. There are a few different product offerings on the market implementing optical transmission of 4K HDMI in a range of configurations. In addition to the distance benefit versus copper, optical fibre is also lightweight, flexible and immune to electromagnetic interference, so optical fibre solutions can reduce installation challenges. With Dolby Vision/HDR10 available on so many new video sources,

The WyreStorm EX-70-G2 entry level HDBaseT extender has had a functionality boost

Habitech says its range of long-range HDMI cable options will ensure it arrives in perfect condition. The distributor says the SCP Active Optical 4K HDR HDMI Cable (995AOC) is the most advanced and competitive long reach HDMI solution on the market offering a thinner, more flexible, and higher performance than other cables in its class. The 995AOC cable supports the latest HDMI standards including 4K@60 4:4:4 18Gbps, HDR, multi-channel audio, EDID,CEC, HDCP2.2, ARC and HEAC up to 100m, and with 6Gbps/ch x 4 6Gbps lanes, up to 24Gbps over 30m. The SCP AOC cable features a light-weight CL2 in-wall jacket or a Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) jacket that is compliant with EN50575:2014. It also features a micro HDMI end on the display/ sink side with a detachable Type D/A adaptor creating a slimmer cable installation profile. Also included is the SCP pulling capsule that protects the cable end during installation and makes narrow conduit/tube installation easier. The 995AOC cable also features the SCP exclusive Snug-Tite Grip that keeps both connector ends securely connected to their devices for signal integrity. The SCP AOC cable provides low susceptibility to EMI and RFI that is important for long distance signal transmission. Habitech also offers the Cleerline by Inneos Real 4K HDMI fibre Tx/Rx extender set, a turnkey HDMI 2.0 optical cable kit that provides full resolution, long distance UHD 4K video transmission at 18 Gbps up to 1000m and 22Gbps to a range of 305m over standard multimode OM3/OM4 fibre. Also useful is the SCP Premium Certified HDI cable for local connections of 4K@60/4:4:4 18Gbps bandwidth from source box to a TV up to 6m away. This new SCP Ultra Violet Series cable has been tested and certified to premium high speed HDMI performance standards and is shielded to provide maximum EMI protection. Distributor AWE offers its KINETIK range of cables designed with installers in mind. AWE says the HDBaseT CAT6 CPR certified cable is ideally suited to residential smart home and home cinema projects, allowing distribution of full HD video, 2K and 4K uncompressed video, audio, ethernet, power and control across a single CAT6 cable.

With transmission up to 100m, and signal convergence for audio and video, ethernet USB and power over the single cable, the HDBaseT works hard to reduce infrastructure cost. The distributor says that the Kinetik cable is the slimmest certified CAT6 cable currently available, with an outer diameter of 5.3mm. The cable comes in a 305m reel housed within a pull box for convenience. The Kinetik HDBaseT CAT6 certified CPR cable certified is available in red and blue. AWE also supplies the HDANYWHERE SlimWire range with a 50% smaller profile than some brands. SlimWire has been designed to be as small and flexible as possible. Compatible with all HDMI devices and 3D capable, the cables are available between 1m – 5m and have been developed with thin flat panel displays in mind. Also from HDANYWHERE, ActiveWire HDMI cables are made to deliver at long lengths. Compared to standard HDMI cables that are effective up to 8m, this range is made to maintain performance up to 25m. An in-line signal boosting chop enables the same data rate delivery as short HDMI cables. Wavelength Distribution, UK and Irish distributors of Supra Cables has announced the availability of the Supra HDMI AOC cables, designed to carry the latest specification of HDMI signals over longer lengths than is possible using conventional ‘copper cables’. The maker boats that 100m is possible using its Active Optical Cable (AOC) cables. The hybrid fibre optic technology enables a lossless transmission over long distance and keeps RFI and EM interference to a minimum. As such, they are suitable for professional and home cinema installations requiring UHD picture and Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master audio sound quality, explains the maker. The cables meet all of the latest specifications for HDMI v2.0, including ultra 4K resolution (3840 x 2160 @ 60Hz), 4:4:4 colour and HDR, HDCP 2.2, ARC and CEC with a bandwidth of 20Gbps. Fully backwardscompatible with existing HDMI products, the cables are available now.

Atlona continues to stretch connectivity with the HDR-EX70-2PS kit

A handy little cable helper from Smart-e

CLS−AOCH/60 cables are thinner, lighter and more flexible than copper or some standard optical cables. The maker says they offer transparent EDID and HDCP support with no signal attenuation and reduced risk of EMI and RFI interference. Atlona is now shipping its HDR-capable 4K HDMIover-HDBaseT Extender, the AT-HDR-EX-70-2PS. The kit is designed to reliably transport HDR-enhanced 4K/ UHD signals over long distances with high quality. The transmitter/receiver kit is suited for both residential and commercial applications, extending 4K/UHD HDMI signals over HDBaseT with support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) formats. The HDR-EX-70-2PS extends 4K HDR by combining latency-free, visually lossless compression with HDBaseT to deliver strong image quality over distances exceeding the limitations of HDMI cabling. Transporting signals up to 4K/UHD at 60 Hz with 4:4:4 chroma sampling over CAT6a or CAT7 cable, the kit can extend 1080p video up to 230 feet (70 meters), while HDR-enhanced 4K content can be carried up to 130ft (40m). The new extender supports all video resolutions, audio formats – including PCM plus Dolby and DTS formats – and colour spaces encompassed in the HDMI 2.0a specification, providing compatibility with emerging 4K/UHD video sources and displays. Able to pass metadata for HDR content, the solution supports the 4K HDR10 standard at 60 Hz (4:2:0 chroma subsampling, 10-bit color) plus additional HDR variants. Additional key features include support for HDMI data rates up to 18Gbps, and HDCP 2.2 compliance for the transport of protected content. Atlona argues the HDR-EX-70-2PS delivers exceptional value for either point-to-point AV requirements or as part of a larger 4K HDR routing and distribution system with the AT-HDR-H2H-44M matrix switcher, also now available. It is a good match for applications from home theatres incorporating HDRenhanced playback and display devices, to retail TV showrooms and detail-intensive professional AV applications such as full-motion visualisation and simulation.

A word on AWG

Stuart Lockhart, director at manufacturer Vision, has a word of warning for installers when using products such as faceplates and in particular paying attention to the AWG rating of cables. Stuart says, “AWG measures the cross-sectional surface area of the conductors in a wire. The smaller the value, the thicker the conductors. A reduction of 6 AWG means double the diameter, so the wires inside a 24 AWG cable are twice as thick as the 30 AWG cable. “Cables that pass through a faceplate like Vision’s Techconnect need to be high quality all the way. Every join you introduce reduces the signal strength 3dB. Short cables often have less copper because they’re only designed to connect a source to a nearby display. Installers can’t just use any old patch cable – especially when the signal needs to travel a distance. Vision – who stand behind the reliability of our products – used to offer an on-site warranty, but had to revoke it when we found most of the issues on-site were not in fact caused by the installed Techconnect cables, but by poor quality patch cables from other manufacturers.” Smart-e argues that one of the most frustrating parts of many installations is having to rely on the pre-existing structured cabling. The cabling may have been installed decades ago, and all manner of problems and issues could have arisen during that time. Cables may have been twisted out of shape, bent to a degree that worked with the old analogue systems, but not with higher format digital products. Older installs may use outdated CAT 5 structured cabling, preventing digital systems from functioning over medium to long cable distances. Smart-e’s solution to this problem is the Apollo, an affordable, hand sized 4K HDBaseT tester. The Apollo uses Smart-e’s own Pass/Fail verification technology to test whether or not each cable run will be able to transmit/ receiver an HDBaseT signal, giving the answer in one button press. Once a cable is connected, the Apollo measures all the data and uses it to calculate whether it can support an HDBaseT signal, this includes: cable length, signal

strength, bit error rate, and max error rate on each channel. The collected data is then compared with industry standards to provide a simple pass/fail test, informing the installer whether the cable passes the test and is able to support an HDBaseT signal. In addition to this, the Apollo can display all the collected data individually, allowing for direct measuring of the data types included above. The unit is compact and lightweight, allowing for both easy transportation and easy use at site. Simple button controls are designed to make the unit easy to use, while a detailed LCD display gives quick and easy access to the data. Triax is keen to draw attention to its new MOD103T HDMI – COFDM Modulator (300128) which enables consumers to watch and control HD content at each TV location using existing coax cable infrastructure. Triax says the solution provides an opportunity to upsell an enhanced viewing experience to clients and deliver a lower cost alternative when supplying multiple HD sources to multiple HD TVs, making an attractive proposition for domestic consumers and commercial installations like hotels and bars. The compact design now includes all inputs and outputs on one side for ease of installation. The product itself includes full HD video, HDMI and RF loop through and IR control (when used with digital links and IR pass amplifiers). The modulators are also agile and can be combined together to enable more HD channels on a network – watch many different HDMI sources on many different TVs. A flexible level control also enables the installer to balance the output with the incoming RF signals for optimum performance. Nue World Ltd offers access to high-quality cable solutions including the Wireworld UK and NueTec brands. The Wireworld Radius HDMI cables feature oxygen-free copper conductors in a precision triple-shielded design created to deliver outstanding video and sound reproduction. The company is particularly keen to underline that every length is certified by DPL Labs to support the full 18Gbps bandwidth requirement of HDMI 2.0. The 9, 12- and 15-meter lengths use Wireworld’s HD-Bridge active technology to maximise system compatibility in addition to supporting all HDMI 2.0 features, including 4K/60, HDCP2.2, deep colour and HDR.

The HD-Bridge module in the active (9m to 15m) Radius cables overcomes limitations of previous active cable solutions. With four discrete 12Gbps+ channels, the HD-Bridge bandwidth extends beyond 50Gbps. The HD-Bridge is powered by an external USB connection at the TV. The module requires less than 0.2A, so it can be powered by standard USB sockets and transformers. To improve resolution, the HD-Bridge module contains three discrete power supplies for digital video, bias voltage and DDC. HD-Bridge also includes exclusive adaptive circuitry and a DDC rise time accelerator to maximise compatibility between components. From NueTec comes an advanced 4K Ultra HD HDMI Link designed for gamers and movie fans offering full support for HDR and Dolby Vision in a thin flexible form factor (Dia. 4.8mm) which is 45% lighter than conventional HDMI cables (30m weighs 760g). NueTec says its AOC models stand apart from current Active Optical Cables using a proprietary system on a chip (SoC) optical module utilising a four-channel 6Gbps receiver/ transmitter in conjunction with the VCSEL array. Key Features include 18Gbps bandwidth to carry uncompressed HDMI 2.0 payload (17.8Gbps) in excess of 10.2Gbps high speed connection (e.g. HDbaseT). The cables are guaranteed to support full HDMI 2.0 features; 3840x2160, HDR, REC. 2020, 8/10/12/16bit, RGB, YCbCr 4:2:0/4:2:2/4:4:4 and 24-60Hz. Terminated with Type A HDMI 19 pins connectors, the cables deliver very low Bit Error Rate (BER), jitter and noise. The maker argues the cables deliver best possible picture quality at maximum distance (40m), have immunity to RFI and can be placed in close proximity to Wi-Fi. Each AOC18G HDMI Link is tested twice; once at the factory and again by NueTec in the UK. Each cable is serial numbered and is accompanied by a test certificate.

Essential Install | New Media Art

No Longer Dead by Jonathan Monaghan (U.S)

Home is where the art is

How New Media Art and digital canvases can transform homes. Tim Sinnaeve, managing director, Canada, Barco, explains the opportunity.

Laser projectors like the Barco Medea are ideal for art work installations

Art collecting has long been a passion and pastime for those that wish to own and display a piece of work that they feel a certain emotional connection to. There are any number of reasons why a person would want a piece of art in their home—perhaps the work or artist evokes strong positive memories, or they feel the piece speaks to the design, mood and aesthetic of their home. Regardless, art collecting is a trend that is growing in popularity—in fact, high-net-worth individuals tend to spend more on art than they do on cars. But just as Romanticism gave way to Impressionism, the art world continues to move forward as artists react to the world around them. For example, we see the worlds of art and technology merging into an exciting new medium, or ‘New Media Art’. More than ever, artists are looking to technology for inspiration and as a digital canvas for their creativity. This new art movement has been gaining in popularity in the art world as more artists are creating digital pieces, and collectors are finding new and engaging ways to display this art in their homes. But what exactly is New Media Art? And how does technology fit into its creation and into maximising its impact when displayed?

What is New Media Art?

While there is no universally accepted definition for New Media Art, a good baseline is any work created with new media technologies such as digital art, computer graphics and animation, virtual and interactive art and even art, as biotechnology. While that might seem like an overly broad cross-section, it’s this variety that offers the most opportunity. New Media Art is the new frontier of the art world and one that’s still in flux, meaning there is a lot of room for artists to experiment with the medium. Excitement for New Media Art is emerging across the art world. A growing number of artists are embracing New Media Art and both museums and private collectors desire the unique innovation of these pieces and are incorporating digital art options into their creative landscapes, and because technology is advancing rapidly, the movement is only just beginning to explore the possibilities with colour, form, movement and backgrounds. Even bleeding-edge technologies like augmented reality and virtual reality are influencing how art is created and displayed.

An engaging experience

The practical applications of New Media Art are only now surfacing, but the possibilities are bound only by imagination. At its heart, New Media Art provides an opportunity for an immersive entertainment and cultural experience, one that creates an emotional connection to the content. So why has New Media Art not yet become as widespread and popular an experience in high-end homes as the more traditional home theatre or media room setups? While we could identify many contributing factors, one main reason is a tendency in our industry to think in terms of products or boxes, such as ‘home theatre’ and ‘media room’. Up to this point it’s not really an experience we have brought to our customers. Another element has been the quality and availability of the content.

Virtually limitless applications

The Phoenix and the Medusa by Jonathan Monaghan

One overlooked factor is the tendency to display digital art forms on flat panel screens in 16/9 aspect ratio. Our brains are wired to associate this aspect ratio with TVs or computer monitors and this becomes the context of the work displayed. Very few serious art collectors are willing to spend the money on a high-end contemporary digital work of art if the end result is mistaken for a nice screensaver on a television, even if that television is framed. From the artist’s perspective, they are unlikely to want to have their art displayed on anything that degrades the intended quality and impact—not to mention the limitations placed on their artistic freedom. This is why we prefer to think in terms of architectural digital canvases that can enable the immersive entertainment and cultural experiences. It’s important to allow content creators the opportunity to create what they want without placing limitations on them in terms of screen size or aspect ratio. In much the same way artists in years past have been largely unburdened by physical canvas size or shape, so the new media creators should have artistic freedom when it comes to their creations. The fact that a digital canvas can be created to custom specifications means that they can be integrated in the architecture and design of the home—giving home designers and owners more flexibility in how they want to approach the media experience. It also gives them the ability to choose and alter the experience and the content on display as frequently as desired.

Driving the New Media Art movement is the artist’s desire to create amazing content, and the art connoisseur’s passion to experience that art in the most conducive environment possible. The technology has to be in service of that goal, otherwise the experience won’t be up to the level that the content creators and customers expect. As we enter this new and exciting space, we have to focus on creating experiences that allow people to enjoy the content and artists they love in new and exciting ways—and ensuring the quality is as high as possible. But what goes into ensuring that the art is displayed exactly as it is intended? The first step is employing display technology of the highest quality available. It’s important to consider every aspect of the projectors or display systems— taking into account the unique properties of each technology, from the design and build to the luminance and picture quality. Laser projection is a state-of-the-art choice and delivers astounding results in all projection applications. Direct View LED also offers unique capabilities for New Media Art creations. For the customer, best-in-class technology means creating showcase moments regardless of what experience is being created. Connoisseurs and collectors are getting the most accurate, brightest and crisp representation possible, which translates to the most exciting and immersive experience. From the content creator’s perspective, they are assured that their creation is being seen in the best possible light, as they envisioned it from the start. The experience creates a strong, positive and lasting connection between the artist and the audience. If homeowners can have the high-quality, laser-based projection and display options that one might find in a museum, luxury resort or high-end theatre, then New Media Art becomes relevant in residential environments where the owners want to showcase this up-and-coming art form. In practice the experience is not limited to New Media Art, and this is where the line between art and theatre becomes blurred. As such, New Media Art can complement the traditional home theatre experience. In the past the default configuration has meant that when not in use, the screens and projection areas have remained clearly set up as a theatre space. With the addition of a New Media Art alternative, a home owner can have a seamless transition from an immersive entertainment space to an engaging art showcase. If done correctly the experience extends beyond the art itself to encompass the surrounding architecture, and can also encompass virtual wallpapers and other design elements. A custom created interior design can make the digital canvas the centrepiece of the home, further elevating the experience.

The future of New Media Art

As has been mentioned previously, we’re still in the early years of New Media Art as a collector’s item. As more and more artists continue their experimentation with all that the medium has to offer we’ll see a wider variety of pieces than ever before. Going hand-in-hand with the artists exploration are the technological advancements that are on the horizon. It’s not out of the realm of possibility to imagine houses that contain pieces of art that use augmented and virtual reality aspects to create completely immersive installations. Regardless of what advancements come along, the primary reason for collecting art remains the same—filling one’s home with the pieces that have the biggest emotional impact. It’s up to us as architects, designers, integrators and product sellers to ensure that the art is displayed in as engaging a way as possible, no matter the medium. Barco barco.com

Q Acoustics hugs a hoodie

Fire safety and acoustic improvements are delivered by Q Acoustics

Q Acoustics has expanded its range of fire and acoustic insulation hoods to cover the company’s entire portfolio of in-ceiling and in-wall speakers. The move is intended to help installers, electricians and property developers achieve maximum fire protection and sound absorption, which is particularly pertinent when fitting installed solutions into residential flats, commercial buildings or houses in multiple occupation. The hoods have been designed to melt when they come into contact with high temperatures, creating a robust seal, and thus slowing the spread of fire between floors. They comply with Part B and Part E of the UK Building Regulations, maintaining 30-60 minutes of fire-resistant rating. Q Acoustics says the extended range will help installers to meet the legal requirements for hoods to be used in many new buildings that include installed speakers. In addition to fire protection, the hoods are designed to reduce sound pollution by restoring the acoustic integrity of the ceiling/wall, which is especially valuable when fitted by businesses and/or shops located below residential apartments, or when fitted between floors of residential apartments. Alex Munro, brand director of Q Acoustics, says, “After a positive initial response, we have now ensured there is a specific fire and acoustic insulation hood tailored to fit each of our installed speakers. We have spoken in-depth with our approved installers and long-standing clients, and they were keen that we combined the speakers and hoods in a cost-effective package. Rightly, there is a growing focus on health and safety across new buildings – particularly across large, multi-purpose properties – and by expanding this range we are providing installers with added choice and convenience.” Q Acoustics 01279 501 111, armourhome.co.uk

The Google Home Hub isn’t the Google Assistant’s first outing on a smart display. That honour goes to the Lenovo Smart Display and JBL Link View, but this is the first offering made by Google. Unfortunately, first-party products are not always the best, and that’s evident when comparing the Google Home Hub to those currently available. Unlike the Lenovo Smart Display and JBL Link View, the Google Home Hub has not been designed for video calling. It’s not overly surprising that Google would omit a front-facing camera from its own device, after all the firm isn’t exactly the most trusted when it comes to privacy – but that didn’t seem to stop Facebook with its smart display. The software on the Google Home Hub is pretty much identical to what is offered on thirdparty devices, but Google is adding a few special features including the ability to filter content not deemed family friendly and a ‘downtime’ mode that will mute all notifications other than those deemed important. Google is also bringing a ‘Home View’ feature that will make the Google Home Hub the centre of a smart home – with the ability to have an overview of every smart device installed on the screen. There’s no word on whether these features will eventually filter out to third-party devices, but they will be available on the Google Home Hub from day one. The Google Home Hub will be available in the UK, US and Australia from October 22 for $149. Those that purchase the device before the new year will also receive six months of free music streaming, which includes YouTube Music. Google google.com xxx picture caption text in here xxx

Atlona adds Dolby Vision capability to OmniStream AV over IP Atlona has announced a new feature for its OmniStream AV over IP platform that will enable distribution of 4K video with Dolby Vision dynamic HDR over standard, off-the-shelf Gigabit Ethernet data networks. This capability, which the company says is unique, should be available now as a licensed feature update to the OmniStream Pro and R-Type Series for commercial and residential networked AV applications. Atlona has Dolby Vision gripped Atlona underlines that OmniStream will be the only AV over IP platform capable of streaming and decoding UHD, Dolby Vision 12-bit HDR content at 60 frames per second over 1 Gigabit or 10 Gigabit Ethernet. Extension and distribution of 4K video with Dolby Vision HDR has been a substantial challenge for integrators and manufacturers. AV over IP systems currently offer HDR10 or HLG (Hybrid LogGamma) compatibility, but not Dolby Vision. Some HDBaseT systems include video compression for 4K HDR, and maybe compatible with Dolby Vision, but only at 24 or 30 Hz, says the maker. Atlona has developed an algorithm that enables full preservation of Dolby Vision HDR metadata while maintaining visually lossless image encoding and decoding, for full interoperability with Dolby Vision HDR streaming media players, Ultra HD Blu-ray devices and displays. Atlona says the OmniStream AV over IP product line overcomes the limitation of typical video distribution systems over Gigabit Ethernet networks that eliminate the metadata necessary for Dolby Vision 12-bit at 60 frame-per-second playback, or uncompressed distribution systems that are limited to only 30 frames per second. In addition to Dolby Vision, OmniStream offers licence-free compatibility with HDR10 and HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) at 60 Hz. Atlona atlona.com

Bluesound Gen2i delivers a host of enhancements

Still got the blues for you! Bluesound, specialist in wireless, high-res, multi-room music systems, has announced Bluesound Generation 2i (Gen 2i), which adds dual-band Wi-Fi 5, Apple AirPlay 2 support, upgraded Bluetooth codecs, as well as improved amplification and acoustics to its product family. As before, all Gen 2i models will be offered in a choice of Black or White finishes. All models are available now, with the exception of the PULSE SOUNDBAR 2i, which will follow in November of this year. All Bluesound Gen 2i models are designed to support AirPlay 2, which will be delivered to Gen 2i owners via an upcoming software update. With AirPlay 2, Gen 2i owners can stream just about any sound from their iPhone, iPad, or Mac to their Bluesound system, in sync. AirPlay 2 also gives users more options for control, including using Siri voice assistance. Add a Gen 2i Player to the Apple Home App on an iPhone or iPad, then Apple Music subscribers can use their iOS. Gen 2i contains Bluesound’s most advanced take on Bluetooth to date – two-way Bluetooth, featuring both Receive and Transmit functionality. Receive capability allows users to wirelessly stream from their device to a Bluesound Player, just like they’re used to doing with Gen 2. The Transmit capability means the user can use their Bluesound Gen 2i Player as a source, sending what they are listening to via Bluetooth to a pair of wireless headphones. The advanced Qualcomm CSR8675 chip used in these new products also supports aptX HD Bluetooth wireless audio for further enhanced audio. Bluesound has also upgraded the Wi-Fi chipset technology to the latest Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) dual-band offering. With the new Wi-Fi chip onboard, Gen 2i owners can take advantage of the less noisy 5 GHz band if needed. Anatech 020 8977 8633, bluesound.anatech.co.uk

Intrinsic lets Apple TV off the chain Intrinsic Group, AV driver developer, says it has introduced a new, fast and reliable Apple TV range of IP-controlled driver modules, enabling full integration and convenient access to the feature-rich experience of Apple TV. Drivers are licensed per install not per device “Apple TV is an incredibly popular, yet (£75 each) helping to keep costs down continually evolving, media player that features in the vast majority of home technology projects,” says Will Hopkins, CEO at Intrinsic Group. “Standard control methodology is via IR. Whilst this works, it has its limitations since it offers no way of accessing the product’s renowned and intuitive set of features. “Also, it’s common for the IR bud to drop off, or for the deflector to slip, resulting in the homeowner losing control and beaming IR signals to multiple units at the same time. Our new Intrinsic Connected range of driver modules fulfils a clear and immediate market need, allowing installers to deliver a much better, more reliable and more cost-effective IR-free approach to controlling Apple TV in the home.” The Apple TV driver range provides two-way IP control of Apple TV devices. Providing full access to metadata, including album artwork, now playing name, current position and duration, as well as offering the ability to navigate to a specific position by dragging on the slider and jumping to a required point. On compatible platforms, this feature can be linked to voice control for extra convenience. Certified Intrinsic Connected, these modules also include features specifically designed to make life easier for the installer. They work using the IP address, eliminating the need to acquire sensitive usernames and passwords. The code is optimised to minimise resource use on control processors and is fully field and beta tested, with support provided via Intrinsic’s 24/7 online ticketing system. Intrinsic currently offers Apple TV drivers for Elan, Crestron and Crestron Studio. Control4, RTI and URC modules are currently in development and will be available soon. Russ Andrews gets personal about power

Get more balance by connecting with Russ Andrews

Russ Andrews Accessories is introducing the latest version of its BMU1500 Balanced Mains Unit to provide 1.5kVA of clean power, individually tailored to each installation, to provide superior music and movie reproduction. Working on the same principle as balanced audio signals – where the audio signal is split into two halves; negative and positive – the BMU1500 mkII splits the 230V mains signal into two separate 115V supplies. One is carried on the live and the other on the neutral, and as each is a different polarity (negative or positive), the noise on one is cancelled out by the noise on the other. The result, says the maker, is a 230V power supply that is free from noise and hence provides the connected equipment with a cleaner supply. Where the new BMU1500 mkII differs most from its predecessor, is in the personalised nature of its set up. The electricity supply in the UK by law has to be 230V +10% -6%, giving a minimum of 216.2V and a maximum of 253V, which means the balanced mains unit will not always be working at its optimum efficiency if set to 230V and the user’s domestic voltage differs from this. Prior to installation of a customer’s BMU1500, Russ Andrews will supply a simple to use, plug in, mains voltage checker, the unit can then be optimised using readings taken over a seven day period. The unit is equipped with a newly-designed balanced mains transformer, which is quieter in operation than conventional transformers, to provide the total 1.5kVA of power. Five Russ Andrews UltraSocket mains outlets on the rear enable connection of the Hi-Fi or home cinema equipment directly to the unit – thereby acting as a mains extension as well as the balanced mains supply. Mains input is via a 16A IEC socket and is protected by use of a high quality two-pole (live and neutral) circuit breaker and the unit is encased in a bespoke ABS case with black anodized front panel. Size of a Sanus! Sanus, manufacturer of TV wall mounts, is increasing the size capabilities of four of its most popular medium mounts to accommodate the consumer trends in TV sales. The SANUS TV mounts, VMF620-B2, VMF518-B2, VMT5-B2, and VML5-B2 have been upgraded to support TVs between 37in and 55in in size, expanding the compatibility with TV panels from the previous 40in – 50in capability. Each mount retains its existing feature set and the same wall plate size. VMF620-B2 is a full motion mount designed to provide more flexible viewing angles from its three-arm articulation, providing a fluid motion 50cm (20in) extension and 180° swivel without any reduction in mounting stability. Innovative solutions, such as 30cm post installation lateral shift and lockable level adjustment, which doesn’t restrict the fingertip VirtualAxis adjustments the user can make, set this next generation mount apart from its rivals. The VMF518-B2 also offers full motion capability, cable management, fingertip movement and post installation adjustment for positioning on the wall. Secure and wobblefree extension into the room of 45cm (18in) provides maximum flexibility for the end-user. Users requiring a tilting mount for TVs up to 55in in size are catered for by the VMT5-B2, which provides fingertip tilt for easy TV adjustments of +7° and -12°. The mount tilts the TV back for easy cable access, making installation and connection simple. Fixed TV installations are possible using the VML5-B2. Requiring no tools for assembly, this mount ensures a quick and easy installation of the TV at the desired height on the wall. Post installation side to side adjustment ensures perfect positioning.
