YOU HAVE BEEN WATCHING...?
Anyone that has encountered EI recently will know that a subject that is very close to the heart of the magazine is that the industry could talk about content more. As we are immersed in all of the smart home technology and wonderful audiovisual systems that deliver for customers, it’s easy to forget why people want these systems in the first place: it is content, it’s music and movies, and these days loads of other media like podcasts.
EI’s earliest memories of listening to music involve huddling round an ancient record player in a small alcove in the corridor of our family home. This battered old turntable and its ragged pair of speakers, were my conduit into a wonderful world full of amazing sounds and intriguing characters. It did not matter to me that the equipment was not the best, it was the experiences new and familiar that filled my time spent listening to records that mattered. My interest in the equipment did evolve over time as I discovered that a more qualitive experience was possible for music and later, movies.
My first upgrade came when we moved to a slightly larger house and my father purchased a ‘music system’ that played records and a new-fangled platform called ‘Tapes’. My led Zeppelin and Deep Purple records definitely sounded better on there and I began to realise for the first time (around 10 years old) that there was more to these recordings than I had at first realised.
Spin forward 40 odd years and EI’s interest in the equipment has evolved into a career, but it is always the content that is the most compelling aspect. On my modest, but now pretty decent system at home, in these last few weeks I have enjoyed checking out a new rock outfit from L.A called Dirty Honey, have listened to some old Brendan Shine songs (a fave of my late father), enjoyed delving into some old live recordings from Brit prog rocker legends Ozric Tentacles, and have also been listening to some early discs by ZZ Top. Movie-wise, I watched for the first time the Ultimate Cut of Zack Syner’s best movie IMO, the uncompromising, sometimes
uncomfortable Watchmen. Also recently watched for the first time in many years was Bruce Lee’s picture The Way of the Dragon, a fascinating glimpse at a time when media cultures that had never really mixed before were finding a way to co-exist. It is the only film which Bruce wrote, co-produced and directed. EI has also been re-watching the excellent Star Wars spin off series Andor, surely the best of the ‘series’ Disney has produced so far; visually gorgeous, but also gritty and unrelenting, it gives a real insight into what living under a police state might actually feel like and drive people into a rebellion.
The point of all of this is people’s relationship with content is complex, it pulls them in many different directions and allows them to explore all types of emotions, memories and have new experiences too. That is what keeps customers coming back for a qualitive AV or content access experience, and in this sector we could do more to exploit and underline that. It’s not about boxes, it is about stirring emotions, memories and new experiences that is the key.
What have you been watching, or listening to? Let us know; maybe we should start a column in the mag doing just that offering demo suggestions, but also just passing on some top tips for listening and viewing pleasure!

MCINTOSH GROUP PARTNERS WITH SEVENOAKS SOUND & VISION
This new partnership continues McIntosh and Sonus faber’s successful integration into the UK Hi-Fi market - with products soon to be available at Sevenoaks stores nationwide, said the manufacturers.
For the first time, the partners said, this new deal brings two of the world’s finest audio brands to the display shelves of one of the UK’s most respected Hi-Fi chains - further expanding McIntosh and Sonus faber’s ongoing incorporation into the UK’s high end audio market. This introduction to the UK market has been overseen by audio distributor Fine Sounds UK, which was delighted to partner with Sevenoaks Sound & Vision to bring McIntosh and Sonus faber’s audio solutions to an increasingly passionate UK customer base.
The initial roll-out will see products introduced to eight owned Sevenoaks stores across the country, with the team able to reach out to connected franchisees on a business-to-business basis. Chelsea, Brighton, Cambridge, Guildford, Norwich, Nottingham, Sevenoaks and Witham branches of Sevenoaks Sound & Vision will all soon stock McIntosh and Sonus faber products. Sonus faber is set to make its Sevenoaks debut in the coming weeks, with the Lumina, Sonetto, and Olympica Nova loudspeaker lines all available to purchase. McIntosh’s MHT300, MA7200,
MA252 and MHA200 will all soon follow with an expected launch date of August 2023. This product line and store reach represents just the start of what both brands anticipate to be a healthy and productive partnership. As the relationship develops, the shared goal is to see a growing range of McIntosh and Sonus faber’s product lines available in all Sevenoaks stores across the country. This collaboration, argue the partners, represents a potentially defining moment for the UK HiFi industry - as McIntosh and Sonus faber’s high-performance audio products finally become a distinct and accessible system addition for every discerning audiophile in the country.

TEN YEARS IN THE MAKINGLIFE’S GOOD WITH THE LG TV 2023 LINE-UP
Did you know that it’s been ten years since LG Electronics (LG) unveiled its first-ever large-screen OLED TV? AWE takes up to the story.
A decade of redefining the user experience has positioned LG OLED the first choice for millions of customers worldwide. With its iconic self-lit pixels for powerful and bright images, LG OLED is backlight-free making it thinner and lighter than other display technologies.
The creation of LG OLED was inspired by the fast-moving developments in content creation with the needs of gamers being another driving force. Now, LG has upped its game once again to secure its top spot on the leaderboard of TV innovation with the stunning line-up for 2023, available from AWE.
The new OLED TV evo series models offer LG’s iconic self-lit pixel picture quality, powerful image processing technologies, and an enhanced webOS platform for even more smart features and services.
The lineup includes the latest Z3, G3, and C3 OLED evo series TVs, which have been upgraded to provide higher brightness and colour accuracy, as well as amazing clarity and detail. This is thanks to the precision and performance of LG OLED evo technology and the new α9 AI Processor Gen6.
Z3 OLED EVO SERIES
Let’s start at the top. The super-premium Z3 model takes you into the world of α-realism with stunning 8K resolution. The exceptional picture and sound refinements of the α9 AI Processor 8K Gen6 generate the most realistic and immersive viewing sensation yet. Self-lit pixels shine even brighter with the Light Boosting Algorithm, Light Control Architecture, and
other refinements driven by the α9 AI Processor 8K Gen6.
The clean design of the Z3 adds understated style to any space for an aesthetic that blends comfortably within luxury surroundings. Available in a 77in Gallery Design for an art exhibition vibe, or an 88in model with floor stand sits proud like a piece of furniture.
G3 OLED EVO SERIES
One significant upgrade applied to this year’s G3 series is LG’s Brightness Booster Max technology. This incorporates a brand-new light control architecture and light-boosting algorithms to increase brightness by up to 70%. Brightness is mapped and controlled on a pixel-by-pixel basis, resulting in sharper, more realistic images.
The new models also boast an aesthetic upgrade via the introduction of the ultraseamless One Wall Design. Leaving no visible gap when wall-mounted, the G3 Series brings style and effortless elegance to the living room.
Building on the personalised user experience on LG OLED TV is AI Concierge, which provides each user with a curated list of content choices based on their past usage and search enquiries to offer a selection of trending, tailored content for them to browse.
C3 OLED EVO SERIES
The latest Alpha series processor uses LG’s most sophisticated AI-assisted Deep Learning technology to ensure outstanding picture and sound quality. AI Picture Pro now offers improved upscaling for better clarity and enhanced dynamic tone mapping, which helps reveal the depth and detail in every frame. AI Picture Pro also integrates a picture processing technology that detects and refines important objects, such as people’s faces, to give them a more lifelike HDR quality.
In addition to fine-tuning image reproduction, the α9 AI Processor Gen6 powers LG’s AI Sound Pro; a feature that helps viewers get swept up in the onscreen action by claiming virtual 9.1.2 surround sound from the TVs’ built-in speaker system.
LG OBJET EASEL
If your client is looking for something a little different, the LG OLED Objet Easel doubles as an attractive work of art. Exclusive to AWE, this unique 65in 4K OLED features an easel-inspired design, turning the TV into a design feature.
When not in use a sliding fabric panel hides the screen away, displaying only the top portion of the screen to change the Easel’s appearance. Use ‘Line View’ to display music playing, daily news headlines, a clock or sports fixtures in the top part only or switch effortlessly to ‘Full View’ for the complete screen. The ‘Gallery Mode’ can be used to display artwork on the screen when the TV is not in use.
The LG Objet Easel has a very different aesthetic to other televisions and helps it blend in within minimalist or contemporary environments. The easel itself can be upright against the wall or at an angle to look more like artwork being displayed. But this isn’t just a pretty-looking TV, it also features LG’s OLED evo technology and α9 Gen5 AI Processor for the best image quality. It also features multidimensional sound thanks to a powerful 80W output and room-filling 4.2 channels.
GOOD FOR GAMING
For epic gaming adventures, LG’s self-lit OLED TVs are also suitable for gaming displays with a blazing-fast 0.1 millisecond response time, low input lag, and up to four HDMI 2.1a compliant ports. They are equipped with the Game Optimiser, allowing users to quickly select and switch between gaming-specific features, such as game-genre display presets. Settings for G-SYNC Compatible, FreeSync Premium, and variable refresh rate (VRR) are easily accessible from the Game Optimiser as well.
GOOD FOR EVERYONE
Furthermore, LG is leveraging its technological leadership not just to create products and services for a better life, but also to be kinder to the environment. The 2023 LG OLED TVs are designed to create sustainable cycles, from production all the way through to disposal. LG OLED TVs have no backlighting unit, meaning each TV requires fewer materials to produce than a conventional LED TV.
LG OLED also employs many components made from recycled plastics. These are shipped in eco-packaging made from recyclable materials and featuring single-colour printing. Easier on viewers’ eyes, all of LG’s 2023 OLED TV models have been certified low blue light by TÜV Rheinland and flicker-free by UL Solutions.
The new LG OLED line-up for 2023 is now available for your CI projects at AWE. For more information about AWE or to book a visit, head to awe-europe.com.

The ci series is used for both movie and music Atmos mixing, with works by some highly acclaimed artists from many different genres, including Carole King, xPropaganda, Swindle, Seal, Miles Davis and Stormzy, having been re-mixed into Dolby Atmos using the PMC ci series.
All six models will be on display and all are designed with a shallow depth for on-wall mounting, and the ci30, ci45, ci65 and ci90slim may also be used in-wall, thanks to the Qikfire spring-loaded mounting system which makes them very ‘installer-friendly’ says the maker.

Also new to UK integrators is Blind Pocket, a high-quality blind concealment product that allows integrators to provide their customers with an aesthetically attractive solution at an affordable price. The extruded aluminium boxes are designed to fit roller blinds up to 4,000mm width neatly within the ceiling, eliminating the need to build a customer pocket, which ultimately saves installation time and cost.
Visitors can see QMotion’s hybrid-powered Wireless Roller Blind Systems. Unlike some other wire-free system on the market, these automated treatments provide industryleading battery life, from one to four years, and are available in sizes up to 3,800mm wide x 4,500mm drop. CuTrac is a virtually noiseless automated curtain track solution with a choice of power supply and control options, rod sizes and finishes.

FUTURE AUTOMATION
Future Automation (Stand 150) will be launching two new lines at the show, Unichannel: The Universal Pocket Shade System and Cineair & Cineair Luxe a new outdoor TV cabinet range.

UniChannel is available in three sizes for single, dual stacked, or dual side-by-side shade installations. This gives installers the option to combine multiple shade fabrics (such as sheer and dimout) inside a single pocket. All models feature plaster-over flanges to make it simple to create a neat pocket that blends seamlessly into the ceiling.
The innovative internal aluminium shade mount enables both toolless positioning of Future Automation roller shades, using the ‘Twist-In’ shade bracket mounting system, and universal compatibility with shades from alternative manufacturers.
The hook-on aluminium fascia trim panel can be mounted in two positions so installers can either leave the aluminium fascia exposed or attach plasterboard directly to the trim panel.
The Cineair range stands ready to help customers bring the theatre to their terrace, veranda or garden.
At the press of a button, the Cineair and Cineair Luxe automatically reveals the outdoor display from within a handcrafted range of cabinets. The all-in-one design also integrates a soundbar if desired into the front of each cabinet so users can listen to music when the display is hidden.

SUMMER OF LOVE!
The summer has been a busy and productive time for Together For Cinema (TFC), as was the start of the year. There has been a considerable amount of preparation for this year’s seven good cause cinema room installations, three industry events, the start of organising a celebratory dinner for 300 people next year, and there is still some shaping of the business to be done since it became a Community Interest Company.
“A lot of this work will fuel the next 8-10 months,” says TFC founder, Ian Morrish. “The industry is making a very real and a very valuable difference in our community.”
May’s CEDIA Summit in Leeds, The Invision ‘Committed to Cinema’ Event in June, and the Pulse-Eight Partner Day (July 5) were all excellent events and very positive for Together For Cinema. Ian and the team are grateful to all concerned for being so willing to show your support and to help nurture TFC’s journey. There have also been some very positive meetings with potential future installation venues, not least with one of the directors at Ronald McDonald House Charities, and a further meeting is planned for early in September.
“With so much support being shown we now have a dedicated section on our website for Fundraising activity,” Ian continues. “A big thank you to Tom Dellicompagni and Jim Carter for their recent efforts on their epic 1,000-mile Ride2Austria challenge.”
The £1million Celebration Dinner that is being planned for May 16, 2024 will be a gathering of 300 Together For Cinema partners and associates that have helped make these £1m worth of installations happen. With 10 months to go before the dinner, over 200 tickets have already been requested, and ‘money can’t buy’ auction prizes are being sought, the proceeds from which will go towards future good causes.
The 2023 installations are well under way. As we reported last month, Nethaus completed the cinema room at Cherry Trees in Surrey, which provides care for children with disabilities. It is already proving both really popular with the children and their families (and of course, the staff!). Resources for Autism in London was completed at the end of July by Smart Living Solutions, and Jooced has also just installed the new cinema room at Acorns Children’s Hospice in Walsall. Thank you to all who donated to help make these rooms happen. The reports will be on the TFC website very soon.
The We Are Beams media/cinema room, in Hextable, Kent is expected to be installed by Ideaworks in September as is The Space Centre in Preston, Lancashire, which will be installed by
Majik House. Exclusive Solutions will work on Hope House Children’s Hospices, Oswestry, Shropshire and Art of Smart is set to install a cinema room at Marie Curie Adult Hospice in Newcastle, Tyne & Wear, both of which are expected to be installed in October/November.
2024 is set to be equally busy, and there are already six to seven venues earmarked for installations. It is, of course, impossible for TFC to know of all the deserving venues in the UK that could use its help, so if you know of anywhere that could benefit, please do let Ian know.
CHARITABLE GRANTS
With Ivory Egg recently committing to a Bronze Level Charitable Partnership, TFC now has 71 companies putting forward charitable grants. These grants vary in amount but every one is much appreciated and all are vital to aid the day-to-day running of, and the long-term security of, TFC and the difference that it is able to make.
“This level of support from our industry shows how much TFC is valued by the industry
and how much the difference we’re making in our community is appreciated and acknowledged,” says Ian. “However, with ever increasing costs, and now being a formalised Community Interest Company, we can always do with more financial assistance. With Companies House governance and certain legal obligations, as well as a board of hugely credible directors, all funding raised is secure and protected.”
FUNDRAISING
One down, one to go…! As mentioned earlier, the first of this year’s two TFC fundraisers, Ride2Austria, has just been completed. This epic ride by Tom and his friend Jim started at the Red Bull F1 Factory in Milton Keynes and finished at the Red Bull Ring racing track in Austria. Twenty-four riders set off and raised over £30,000 for 21 different good causes, with Tom and Jim raising £4,500 for Together for Cinema, making it the largest beneficiary of funds raised from the ride. This was huge effort and one that will help so many families create happy memories in TFC cinema rooms.
The second is in full planning and is from London to Brighton on Sunday September 10th when Matt McLernon from LILIN (a TFC Platinum Level Charitable Partner), Greg Stuttle, recently retired from GJD, and Ian, will ride the 58 miles from the capital to the well-loved seaside resort.
“We’re hoping to raise over £4,000 and will do this unaided, with no safety net!,” Ian concludes. “I suspect I will be bringing up the rear, but will hopefully see Matt and Greg at the finish line. All fundraising is vital to our long-term security and of course helps with exposure of the difference we’re making. Once again, a huge thank you to all our supporters. It’s great to know that what we’re doing is well received and has moved so many to get involved.”
uCONTROL REMOTE MAKES UK DEBUT AND PRICING LAUNCH AT EI LIVE! 2023
The new uControl Remote is a handheld 44-button remote control designed to easily navigate endless entertainment and scene-setting options, all from under your thumb. Get hands on Stand 11.
• HDANYWHERE’s highly-anticipated smart remote is sure to be one of the main attractions at EI Live! 2023.
• Visitors can put the new remote through its paces with live demos at the HDA stand.
• HDANYWHERE to reveal final pricing and shipping information at the show.
“Our technology-neatening products are usually found behind the scenes. Now, HDANYWHERE is right in the palm of your hand. We listened to our customers and pushed to deliver the smart remote they’ve been asking for at an attractive price point,” Chris Pinder, HDANYWHERE Founder, says. “Add a uControl Remote to an MHUB installation, and you have an integrated smart home solution cleverly disguised as an AV
matrix - one that delivers 80% of the mostused functionality of expensive solutions,” adds Chris.
MHUB is HDANYWHERE’s integrated smart home hub for managing media, music and mood, room-to-room in multiple zones. For installers, MHUB is a single-brand integrated smart home solution that’s quickly installed and manageable remotely via the cloud, now with the significant benefit of also including bolt-on in-room smart remotes for midmarket luxury residential and light commercial projects.
Dillan Pattni, Head of Desing, explains, “We spent four years developing it from scratch, and we now finally have a companion remote control with a high-quality design to elegantly manage media, music and mood, and drastically transform the user experience of every HDANYWHERE system for the better.”
Combining Wi-Fi and infrared technology, the uControl Remote allows you to control all the technology in a room. The product is designed to be a brilliant remote for AV, and with 44 physical buttons catering for almost all use cases, there is no need to look down and interface with a touch screen.
uControl processors built into MHUB and ZP units allow users to control multiroom TV and audio, as well as lighting scenes in Rako, Lutron, Hue and KNX throughout a home from the uControl app, smart remote, Apple watch app or compatible third-party keypanels. Homeowners can even control smart power units, relays and mechanisms (smart blinds, motorised brackets, etc) and combine them into single press or timed actions such as ‘all on’ or ‘all off’, for example.
Further levels of customisation are possible for a more refined experience with almost every key being assignable to any action possible within the uControl processor giving users the flexibility to tailor the remote to specific needs.

TECHNOLOGY, WELLNESS AND SUSTAINABILITY
Wellness and sustainability are increasingly popular topics in our day-to-day lives. Does technology have a part to play in delivering a comfortable, healthier lifestyle at home, and how can installers tap into these trends with the services and solutions they provide?
So, what role does the technology integrator have to play in meeting these consumer expectations? In our view, it’s a significant one. These trends present an opportunity for installers to reframe the way they present technology to new and prospective clients which can help installers be both more relevant and more successful.
SMART THINKING FOR BETTER SLEEP
The Snap One brand, Control4, has recently developed a ‘Technology, Wellbeing and Sustainability’ CPD for its Partners that will educate and assist Partners in having discussions with architects and interior designers regarding the potential health and wellness benefits of the technology, and how it can strike a chord with consumers.
In 2023, health and wellness continue to be top priorities in residential design, according to the American Society of Interior Designers
(ASID). ASID’s 2023 Trends Outlook1 report explores how home design is being impacted by these factors alongside rising interest in sustainability.
The report identified a growing trend towards holistic healthy living, and interior design that addresses both the mind and body. It also shows how many consumers want to protect the planet and are making more deliberate sustainable choices.
Sleep is one area where technology can contribute. Since the pandemic, insomnia has increased with almost 23 million people in the UK suffering with sleep issues. The close link between sleep and good health is well established, so using smart home technology designed to improve sleep hygiene can add further value to your installations and improve the lifestyle of your clients.
Lighting technology may now help people get a better night’s sleep. Lighting control is important in promoting the body’s sleep-wake circadian rhythm; creating the right environment both to relax and wind down at night and wake up more naturally in the morning. Settings that support this include controlling window treatments that provide access to natural light in the morning, and limit exposure to light at
night, as well as lighting colour temperature that automatically adjusts to match natural light, supporting our body’s circadian rhythms.
Smart lighting solutions, such as the new Vibrant Linear Lighting from Snap One, allows architects, interior designers, and lighting designers to work with integrators to create lighting schemes that support a client’s daily routine. With tailored lighting to support wellness, integrators can take advantage of a new service offering and a new potential business revenue stream.
INDIVIDUAL AND INDEPENDENT LIVING
Building on the theme of personalisation, smart technology can also benefit more specific needs of clients. By 2050, one in four people living in Europe or North America could be over 65 years old². We’re already seeing smart technology installations that are helping the elderly to live independently and safely in their own homes, for example enabling residents to close doors or adjust lighting with voice control, and this will continue to become a focus for manufacturers in the future.
Smart technology empowers people to create the right environment to suit their personal, unique needs. For example, in the UK it is estimated that around 1 in 7 people are neurodivergent³, and 1 in 100 are on the autism spectrum⁴, and these individuals often benefit from routine and predictability. So, providing a level of predictability with pre-sets and sequences, or creating a calming environment with tailored and soothing lighting, may assist these families in promoting a more peaceful and secure home.
SMART, SUSTAINABLE AND RELIABLE
As we move towards the goal of net-zero carbon emissions in the UK, many people are making reducing the operational carbon of their homes
a priority. Smart technology can substantially help manage sustainable energy usage by intelligently setting and controlling lighting, heating, cooling, and other essential systems in the home. By ensuring these systems run efficiently, energy consumption and emissions can be monitored and reduced.
Moreover, integrators can be instantly alerted to system errors that could potentially impact energy usage. Remote management and monitoring solutions, such as OvrC, empower integrators to remotely manage, configure and troubleshoot devices on the network, keeping every install running smoothly and sustainably.
MAKING WELLNESS A BUSINESS PRIORITY
For any smart home integrator, it’s important to understand the potential benefit of excellent home automation on a client’s health and wellbeing. Helping a prospective client understand the potential long-term positive impacts that this technology can make to their lifestyle, and to those they love, may not only win you a client but may also lead to a greater scope of work for your business.
An ideal starting point for tips on how to approach this conversation with clients is the new CPD course by Control4, exploring the link between ‘Technology and Wellbeing’ including:
• Improved sleep hygiene
• Meeting individual needs
• Reducing operational carbon
• Minimising repairs and maintenance
• Decreasing clutter
In this course, integrators can gain essential tools to support conversations and new revenue streams to upscale technology for improved wellness and sustainability in the home. Find out more from Snap One on Stand 111 at EI Live! 2023.

CEDIA SURVEY FINDINGS
Matt Nimmons, Managing Director of CEDIA EMEA,
the CEDIA 2023 UK Smart Home Recruitment & Salary Survey.
The smart home technology industry has experienced rapid growth in recent years, leading to a surge in demand for skilled labour. Consequently, employers in this industry are facing challenges in both recruiting and retaining staff.
Earlier this year, CEDIA conducted a UK Smart Home Recruitment and Salary Survey to generate valuable information for both job seekers and employers in the smart home space. The association has now created a report which delivers valuable insights into the recruitment and salary trends within the UK smart home industry.
HIRING DEMAND
The report highlights that a majority of employers in the smart home industry are planning to expand their workforce over the next two years. More than half of these employers are likely to resort to headhunting or leveraging their professional networks to secure suitable candidates.
• The most in-demand job roles in the next two years will be Junior Technician, Lead/Senior Technicians and Administrator.
• 60% of employers are more likely to hire employees with industry certifications.
• 65% of businesses are using subcontractors.
SALARY & BENEFITS
The report delves into the regional average salary ranges for the most common job roles in the smart home industry. This section sheds light on the remuneration packages offered by employers to attract and retain talent. By understanding the salary landscape, industry professionals and potential recruits can make informed decisions regarding their career paths.
• The starting salary for a Junior Technician is 24% lower in the North West than it is in the South East.
• A project manager role is, on average, the highest paying role in all regions.
• A third of employers offer professional development as an employee benefit.
WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
The report focusses on employers’ willingness to participate in workforce development activities and their propensity to offer early
engagement opportunities to young individuals through apprenticeships, internships, and work placements. By analysing these aspects, the report highlights the commitment of employers to nurture and support talent within the smart home industry.
• 72% of surveyed employers stated that they would hire an apprentice.
• 58% of employers declared that they would actively work towards addressing the lack of diversity in the industry.
• 55% of employers are willing to educate young people about job opportunities.
This inaugural recruitment and salary survey has provided some valuable insights into the current state of the UK smart home industry workforce. It demonstrates the varied career opportunities in the sector and the need to drive new talent into this rapidly growing market.

GREAT SCOTT PART 2!
EI profiles Scott Krix, speaker maker extraordinaire and founder of Krix, highly respected supplier of speaker systems to the domestic and commercial sectors. This issue, part two, takes us to present day, approaching 50 years in the business.
Could you describe how you got the idea for the infinite baffle speaker system and why it is important?
The infinite baffle wall was engineered when I was installing new speakers into the Capri cinema in Adelaide and discovered a serious
issue when we ran equalisation on the cinema. We investigated and found that reflections were coming off the rear wall behind the screen, causing cancellation and reinforcement (combing) problems.
The only apparent solution (to me) was to build a wall around the speakers and add acoustic absorbent material to the front of the new structure.
It was successful in increasing efficient loudspeakers and ensuring better intelligibility and overall sound performance.
Could you describe how the company has maintained its presence in the pro cinema world and also the domestic scene? What are the main differences?
We have maintained our presence in the commercial cinema world as we are highly adaptable, and by employing an in-house onsite research and development team, we can design and offer solutions with a quick turnaround.
With commercial cinema taking off and surround sound gaining popularity in home environments, we utilised our decades of commercial cinema research and created our premium home cinema products, Series X, SX and MX and gave them the tagline ‘real cinema at home’.
We scaled our cinema technology impeccably to the home environment, so those who enjoy going to the cinema can enjoy vast, immersive sound with optimal dispersion and responsive bass in their own home.
How do you see the UK and European sectors developing for Krix over the coming years?
Krix has a distributor and dealer network across Europe and the United Kingdom, which continues to grow. Our relationships with key distributors and our Krix warehouse located in Born, Netherlands, allows for fast delivery across the region with fantastic support from our team in Australia.
Having exhibited at ISE in Amsterdam for the last few years, the brand has grown exponentially in Europe and worldwide.
We partnered with Trinnov at ISE in Barcelona early this year. The standout was to showcase Trinnov’s new WaveForming technology for home cinema. We supplied all the loudspeakers and much of the loudspeaker engineering for this event.
We continue to listen to the market and research and develop new and exciting products that suit our European customer’s needs.
Do you have any top tips or advice for installers when creating high performance home cinemas?
The best home cinemas come down to acoustics in the room and understanding what your client wants to achieve. Is the room for a solo movie watcher, or is it for the whole family?
Building a solid and trusting relationship with your client will ensure the end goal is achievable and you will exceed expectations. Understanding factors including size and layout, number of seats and other impeding factors in each room will determine the number of speakers and placement.
Do you have any particular favourite products from the current line up?
The Series MX range is my current favourite. After designing the high-end Series SX and X range, we introduced an easy-to-install modular system for behind acoustic transparent screens that are perfect for home cinemas from three metres to 18 metres in depth.
As with my first baffle wall built in 1979/80, the Series MX module is covered with an acoustic absorbent material to absorb any sound reflecting off the back of the screen or the room itself. The modular speakers are concealed, but the sound definitely delivers an impact.
What impact do you think room correction technology such as that available via Trinnov and others has had on the home cinema market?
Room correction technology has had a significant impact on the home cinema market. While we can control the engineering of our speakers, they will inevitably be used in rooms of various sizes, construction materials and have different seating positions. Digital correction, when used with the right acoustic treatments, allows the installer to extract the very best performance from the system and raise the bar in terms of what is possible in a home cinema. Some of the more advanced systems feature an incredible level of configurability, enabling the installer to tailor a customised solution for the client’s room and their personal preferences.
What is your preferred method of listening to music these days: vinyl, digital, or something else?
Digitally is my go-to method these days. Everything is easily accessible, although I do love to listen to vinyl still from time-to-time.
Clearly music plays a huge part in your life; do you have any particular special memories either from a live concert experience or just listening to music with friends?
I have attended many live music events in my time. Some have been absolutely brilliant, and others memorably bad. Mainly bad due to poor mixing, terrible acoustics of the venue, or stupidly loud with ridiculous levels of odd-order harmonic distortion.
These days I enjoy listening to music with friends, simply sitting around listening to all kinds of materials or spending a few serious hours in front of the speakers in a world of my own.
What are you listening to or watching right now? What would you reccommend?
I enjoy watching a wide variety of movies and we are very spoilt by choice of genre and quality.
The latest blockbusters like Dune, Maverick and John Wick 4 are worth experiencing. Listening to a music soundtrack in one of Krix’s home cinemas is magic and often delivers goosebumps.
I have recently discovered, thanks to Tom Garrett of Trinnov, Stevie Ray Vaughan –Tin Pan Alley 1983. A great sound experience.
What is next for Krix?
In 2024 Krix will celebrate our 50th year. We will continue to expand our worldwide market through innovation, engineering, and manufacturing of high-quality Australianmade speakers.
We will continue collaborating with businesses like Trinnov Audio and learning from sound, ensuring that our products faithfully reproduce cinema and music soundtracks as the artists intended them to be heard. A range of new products will be launched at the end of 2023 and into the coming years. Krix krix.com
BLUESOUND, THE ORIGINAL HI-RES MULTI-ROOM ECOSYSTEM, TURNS 10
A decade of evolution for premium multi-room audio for the custom installation market.
It was a bold move – one that would require a substantial investment of time and money –but the executives at Lenbrook International felt they had no choice. The way they saw it, the Hi-Fi industry was at a crossroads, catering to an audience that was ageing, and competitive pressure was coming from the computer industry, which attracted young audio consumers with products that were closer to fashion accessories than to quality audio. John Banks, Lenbrook’s Chief Brand Officer at the time, punctuated the problem for the executives around the boardroom table by calling the HiFi industry a ‘sunset industry’.
“We felt like we were painted into a corner because we knew we needed to bring younger audiences into the Hi-Fi world but they didn’t seem to be very interested in the products or brands in our space,” says John, now the Chief Strategy Officer for Lenbrook. “And we certainly couldn’t afford to just sit back and watch computer companies that knew nothing about how transcendental a proper music listening experience could be steal away the next generation of potential Hi-Fi consumers from us.”
After numerous and sometimes heated debates, as well as a lot of calculating and recalculating the investment required, in the spring of 2011 Lenbrook’s board of directors approved the plan to create a new brand – one that would combine the expertise of its two legacy Hi-Fi brands, NAD Electronics and PSB Speakers, with a software platform designed
for the smartphone generation. In the fall of 2012, Bluesound was unveiled to Lenbrook’s distribution partners as the world’s first hi-res capable wireless multi-room audio ecosystem, with public announcement slated for the Consumer Electronics Show the following January in 2013.
Ten years later, Bluesound continues its reign as an award-winning premium multi-room audio option for music lovers and audiophiles, while BluOS, the software platform that defined the user experience for hi-res multiroom streaming, has taken on a life of its own with Lenbrook adding it to a number of NAD Electronics and PSB Speakers products and with adoption by other Hi-Fi brands like DALI Loudspeakers, Roksan and Monitor Audio, as well as Peachtree and Cyrus.
Perhaps counter-intuitively given the focus on attracting younger audiences, the commitment of Bluesound to the custom installation channel has been critical to its success.
“The CI channel was always central to how we thought about Bluesound,” explains Matt Simmonds, Bluesound Product Manager. “It was a very deliberate holdover in thinking from our legacy brands that put us in the middle of the smart home trend.”
“Through BluOS, we have robust integrations with most of the major home control players,” adds Joe de Jesus, Custom Installation Product Manager for Lenbrook. “There’s also a growing ecosystem of third-party
developers who we work closely with, including providing internal development resources, to create unique BluOS experiences for niche applications using the open API.”
Even the industrial design of Bluesound products since Generation 2 launched in 2015 kept custom installation in mind. Bluesound made its most popular products – the NODE, POWERNODE, and VAULT – rack-friendly with its ½-rack width dimensions, and its PULSE speaker line launched with optional wall mount brackets. The latest POWERNODE EDGE went one step further, making the integrated power amplifier a 1U rack height and placing touch controls on the front panel for ease-ofaccess when placed in a rack.
“Joe and I are always working closely together to make sure the brand can bridge both the consumer world and the custom installation world,” Matt notes.
Over the years, improvements in home Wi-Fi reliability and the extensive work put in by the BluOS team at Lenbrook has has made it increasingly easy for consumers to set up their wireless multi-room systems themselves with a few taps in the BluOS Controller app.
For custom installers who get a call to install a system for a consumer, the ease of set-up has helped to drive down the time spent setting up a system, and BluOS’s robust and awardwinning specialized support for CI installers has been instrumental in making Bluesound a popular choice in the CI channel. The upcoming UI and UX improvements to BluOS 4.0 in the autumn promises even greater ease-of-use, including changes to make playlist and play queue creation more intuitive.
“BluOS has really come a long way since the early days and we have placed a lot of focus on making the platform friendly for the custom installer, even reducing the frequency of our software updates so installers can minimize the number of post-installation support requests they get from their clients,” adds Andrew Haines, BluOS Platform Manager.
In addition to the attention placed on the product, Lenbrook is also sensitive to the relationship dynamics of the installer channel.
“We are very aware of how our activities in online channels will be viewed by our installers and dealers and we do our best to preserve reasonable margins for everyone up and down the chain,” explains David Cain, Vice President of Sales and Commerce at Lenbrook International. “That might be another bit of legacy thinking, but our goal is to find the win-win scenario because a lot of our success, and by extension Lenbrook’s success, has been with the support of these channel partners and we owe them our gratitude and some skin in the game.”
In fact, the theme of Bluesound’s 10th anniversary celebrations is ‘gratitude’ with the brand launching a series of videos that highlight the work they do with some of their key partners, along with a limited run anniversary streamer, the NODE X. Full details of Bluesound’s origin story and its relationship with its industry partners can be found at bluesound.com/10years.
HEAR, HEAR FOR ASSISTED LIVING!
There has been a lot of talk recently in the smart home sector about the concept of assisted living systems. This aspect of our industry is a broad subject and can mean many different things to many different people and different groups. However, to express the essence of the idea, it is the planning and execution of a system that exactly matches any particular needs that the customer has that present them with physical or other challenges in their daily lives.
At Prestige Audio we are already practised in this concept as all of our systems are designed and tuned with our customers’ specific needs in mind. The assisted living aspect of what we do just means taking this concept a little further and accounting for any individual needs a customer has in their daily life away from aesthetic and performance preferences.
A recent project underlined the importance of this area and what can be achieved as we completed a high-performance home cinema system which is located in a luxury development for the over 65s.
A few of the residents have hearing issues and so our engineers employed a Sennheiser system that enables people to use their own smart devices to gain access to a unique audio track that they can listen to on their own headphones. This feed delivers very clear dialogue and presents an experience tuned to those living with hearing loss.
As world-class cinema installers you might expect us to be all over solutions such as this, and we are, as the concept of assisted living systems extends throughout all of the systems we create from the luxury AV systems to the smart home projects that we deliver.
The adjustment is actually a pretty easy one, just thinking about the holistic needs of everyone who is going to be using the system and creating something that suits their needs. This can range from obvious techniques such installing control points and switches at different heights, right through to creating a special interface that allows a person to control their entire house, even if they have limited use of their hands or have other mobility issues.
Assisted living systems can free people from daily tasks that might present them with real issues making life difficult. Controlling curtains, blinds, lights, heating or completing tasks such as answering the door from a personal smart device or via voice control is convenient for all, and genuinely life changing for others.
At Prestige Audio we see the growing concept of assisted living systems as merely an extension of what we have always done, which is look after all of our customers’ wants and needs. Delivering systems that chime with their physical needs is just as important as delivering on any other area and implementing this type of planning and execution is one more way we create satisfied and long term customers.
Regular EI contributor Joe Carri, Director at Prestige Audio, highlights how advanced AV systems can be inclusive for those living with hearing challenges.

BRINGING THE BENEFITS OF TECHNOLOGY TO THE ASSISTED LIVING MARKET
Mike Dorling, Lead Designer at Control4 Partner, Clarke Infinity, explains the challenges and rewards of designing and installing integrated technology systems into assisted living facilities.
environments and, typically, there isn’t an off-the-shelf product that would necessarily do what we need it to do in the care home environment. Often, the usual solution just will not work in an assisted living setting and finding that unique answer to a problem is what we are here for. Thankfully, with all of the constant developments in our industry and in the technology that we have at our disposal, there is always something new or different for us to implement, or to use to solve a problem.
For more than two decades, Clarke Infinity has worked with care homes, providing technology solutions for a variety of assisted and independent living schemes.
We’ve found this industry to be incredibly rewarding. Nowhere does one of our cinemas get more use than in a care home environment where they see daily use from tenants, their families and even staff - it just goes to show that you’re never too old for a good movie.
We put particular focus into how our systems can enhance the mental and physical wellbeing of residents. Typically, that means
that as well as creating accessible cinemas along with interactive projection mapped games and games on large format screens, we’re deploying circadian rhythm lighting, dimming and shading, music control, and creating special sensory rooms and gardens for residents to enjoy too.
We’re a company that’s passionate about giving back independence to people living longer at home or in care. We’re also engineers, and we like to engineer.
Care homes come with a whole range of ‘design challenges’. Many of the technologies and systems are not designed to go into these
Generally, we will receive a specification that is a little out of date and will then try to find more cost effective and up to date solutions for the project. A common one would be a specification for an FM Tuner and dial-style wall controls. We’ll respond to that kind of brief with a Control4 solution, giving streaming capabilities, a curated music service and an automated schedule. Wall controls become custom engraved Control4 keypads and in-wall touchscreens.
It’s important to think differently about this type of project and make these systems work for their keep. A good example is white tuneable lighting. In a typical high end residential scheme, we would provide full control to the client via the app, keypads and so on. Within an assisted living scheme, the level of automation and learning by the system is on another level. We have the system track the circadian cycle to know what the current colour temperature of light should be, use daylight sensors to dim the lighting to the correct level and occupancy sensors and timeclocks to turn the lights on/off, when it is needed. When a button does get pressed, the light automatically comes on at the correct level and at the correct colour temperature.
We like to see our systems make a positive difference in peoples’ lives. There’s nothing better than putting blood, sweat and tears into a project and then seeing and hearing that it is making a positive difference. That’s what we’re all in this business for and it’s why we enjoy working in this market.
Clarke Infinity clarkeinfinity.comLITHE AUDIO VERSATILE SPEAKER VERDICT
UK-based Lithe Audio has added to its install and garden speaker portfolio with an innovative indoor/outdoor surface-mount active speaker system, the i01. Our resident reviewer, Richard Stevenson, takes a listen.
Active speakers and outdoor installation are a combination of words guaranteed to strike horror into installers and electricians alike. Yet the i01 comes to the patio with an IPX6 rating – meaning it can resist high-pressure, heavy sprays of water. Some British drizzle or our growing number of near tropical storm scale downpours should not be an issue.
In fact, Lithe Audio is positioning the i01 as more of a do-it-all active speaker system for inside and out. Out of the box it can be mounted on wall, straight or angled at 45° in either direction, in corner, on corner or placed on a countertop – all using sealed holes through the cabinet and/or the supplied bracket. With the optional i01 Garden Spike Kit it can be secreted in flower beds or around the lawn and the optional i01 Eyelets affords pendant installation. A mounting template is included with each unit.
The shape of the speaker cabinet and bracket is well thought out to allow for cables and the rear terminal panel and its IP6x cover is a design work of art. It includes a well-engineered split rubber bung with cable holes that makes connecting and sealing pre-terminated round-profile cables a sinch. Rubber grommets
cover unused holes in the bung and a metal plate bolts over the rubber to press-seal the design for water-proofing. Flat Cat5 cable or Fig8 speaker cables aren’t going to seal but could be used for indoor installs.
Available in all-black or all-white finish, the matching pop-off grille conceals several of the copious mounting points, a pair of 3in waterproof mid drivers and a 0.75in waterproof silk dome tweeter. These are driven by a 50W Class D amp, with a further 50W available for an attached passive i01 in stereo pair config. The grille is paintable to match interior décor but Lithe recommends leaving it as-is to best withstand rain and UV outside.
The i01 is available as an active unit and a slave passive. The baseline set-up is a single active set to mono, with the ability to add further active i01s daisy-chained via Cat5. Each will still need its own power. There is also the option of adding an i01 passive to each active, driven by the speaker output terminals of the active and using the flexible round-profile 7m speaker cable supplied with each passive unit. Connectivity of the active includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, twin RJ45 and an optical input as well as 4mm binding post outputs for the passive.
The power supply may cause some challenges in outdoor installs compared to typically passive designs that can run miles of speaker cable into a waterproof environment for the electronics. The mains plug to the transformer (also IP6x) is 3m long, with 3m of 24v low voltage cable running to a 5.5mm coaxial plug for powering the active i01. You could potentially extend the low-voltage cable with a female-male coax socket extension, but both waterproofing the joiner for longevity and the voltage drop over an extended distance may prove challenging. A nearby outdoor mains socket would be ideal, but that will likely need additional installation and cosmetic work to make the system look tidy.
Fitted and cabled, the i01 set-up is via the Lithe Audio app that spans and controls the brand’s wireless speaker range. Configuring mono/stereo, setting EQ for indoor, outdoor or pendant installation as well as treble bias, plus naming the speaker is straightforward - if falling a little short of offering the slickness and polish of Sonos. Yet with Chromecast, AirPlay2 and Spotify Connect all built-in, the end user could potentially park the Lithe app after set up and use the third-party front end for music control.

Google Home and Alexa compatibility also add ‘shouting at a smart device’ as a control option.
We set up an active and passive i01s as a stereo pair and experimented inside the house and outside on the decking. Mounting and cable management are superbly thought out and the cabinet shape makes for class-leading mounting flexibility. If they were going in permanently here, under-eave installation on our bungalow roof would be very discrete and, equally, the white models would look fine against the Kent weatherboard. Both would require hiding the black cable and power supply brick neatly.
GETTING CONNECTED
Wi-Fi set-up was not without its challenges, and we resorted to hardwiring Cat5 from the router to get the Master unit registered onto the app. Even then, getting Spotify to play over the network took some fiddling with multiple settings in the Lithe app, phone and within the Spotify app itself. Compared to the speakers’ slick industrial design, the Lithe app and setup is a bit clunky. Yet once installed the system stayed connected and we used Google Home/ Chromecast as the control hub.
The sound is clean and crisp with a decent bass punch from the two small mid-range drivers. In-corner placement added a bit more heft and weight to the sonic presentation without robbing the music of clarity and dynamics. Maximum SPL is never going to
reach CEDIA’s RP22 standards but for basic listening, ambient background in commercial installation, and al-fresco entertainment without the neighbours grabbing for pitchforks, the maximum volume is more than sufficient.
Alongside the incredibly flexible mounting options and all-in-one ‘active’ appeal, perhaps the biggest advantage of Lithe Audio’s i01 stereo pair is its sheer value. Coming in at almost exactly half the retail price of a Sonos
Outdoor Speaker Kit (Amp + Sonance x 2), it is extremely competitive. Expanding the system further by daisy-chaining active plus passive i01 pairs works out even more cost-effective for installs requiring more speaker coverage.
The control and app side of the Lithe Audio package feels a little ‘work in progress’ but the i01’s concept, industrial design and exceptional value make it a very appealing addition to the installer’s options list – inside or out.
CONVERGENCE UK
Every CI business has a story to tell, but CUK’s is more unusual than most. Whereas resi distributors and integrators draw strength from their home market before trying their hand at commercial installation, CUK has taken exactly the opposite path. This means that CUK is stepping into resi with a rather unique perspective on what it takes to deliver enduring and productive partnerships in CI, and a skillset empowered by over a decade of success in project fulfilment for the most demanding highstatus commercial customers. For instance, in partnership with integrators, CUK has designed, specified and supplied AV systems for six venues for the 2012 Olympics; sound and vision for the Millennium (Principality) Stadium in Cardiff; sound for Premiership and Championship football stadiums, airports and world famous nightclubs, as well as conference and collaboration solutions for the Scottish Parliament, among others. To an ‘A’ list of top clients you can also add rollouts for 780 Kwik Fit sites and 1500 sites for Tesco, as well as large scale residential projects and high end
super yachts. Yes, CUK is already travelling the longest learning curve from commercial into residential CI, but it’s the lessons learned along the way that have shaped the quality of its project support.
Stuart says, “My background in the industry comes from the professional audio/AV space. I’d managed distributors around the world for a number of manufacturers for many years before the opportunity to start CUK in 2005. I’ve
made mistakes and swerved others along the way, but experience has taught me that what works, above all, is the single-minded pursuit of excellence in project support.
“Of course, this has meant recruiting knowledgeable technicians and communicators in our four core competences: Installed AV, Live Sound, Conference and Residential, but it also means successful brand building and brand introductions. We focus on specialised brands
Having built a large and successful business in the most demanding commercial AV markets, CUK Group is ready to offer a new level of wraparound support for residential and commercial installation projects. EI Editor, Daniel J Sait, talks with CUK MD Stuart Thomson to discover more.Elan home automation is part of CUK’s growing resi line-up
that are either unknown to the local market or have not achieved their full potential, but you can only do this if you have the complete trust of your customers.
“For me that’s the key to mutual success: partners must have faith in your professionalism to design and specify products and solutions they may never have heard of but are absolutely the right fit for the project. “So, in my experience, product knowledge, design competence, training and trust work in a virtuous circle to deliver successful outcomes for projects large and small. Whether it’s a small audio system for a local restaurant, or coffee shop, or even just a pair of speakers flanking a screen in a meeting room, project size isn’t important to CUK, it’s our customers’ success that counts.”
YOUR TECHNICAL AUDIO-VISUAL PARTNER
Stuart explains, “Look at our site and you’ll see the term ‘application engineering’ cropping up again and again. It’s our shorthand for the signature style of wraparound technical support we’re able to dedicate to each project, including system specification and design, acoustic modelling, programming, commissioning and full training. At CUK we say: ‘bring us your
project and we’ll handle the technicalities, if that’s what you want’.”
“Ironically it was the dire trading environment of the 2007/8 financial crisis that really established our brand of comprehensive outreach. In the toughest times, our wide application knowledge and experience allowed us to help existing and new customers diversify their businesses as they hunted for available work. Our support helped them to deliver projects for which they had little or no experience, helping them survive and grow in the lean years. And when our customers win, we win.”
BOTH SIDES OF THE COIN
Stuart also explains, “Naturally, the same ethos applies to our resi CI business. Of course, every disti in the space wants to grow its brands by supporting its customers - the idea is nothing new - but we think our experience in winning trust and delivering success at the highest level for the most hardheaded commercial perfectionists gives us the energy and confidence to do a great job for our resi partners. Especially since our core commercial technologies in the form of AVoIP, HDBT, control, power, loudspeakers, and amplification are now being deployed by high end residential and marine projects.”
“CUK’s growing resi product lineup also reflects our instinct for high performance and durability. Brands include the wide range of Caymon racks; IP control systems from Cue; the Elan brand of home automation; Focal’s high-end architectural speaker range - including the Littoria all-weather models; Furman power conditioning and sequencing; Garvan’s innovative architectural speaker designs and acoustic room treatments; TV lifts for Maior; Powersoft DSP amps and distribution systems with Dante, as well as the full range of commercial-grade Procab cables and connectors, Proficient and Speakercraft architectural speaker lines and Dante-equipped Symetrix conferencing technologies.”
Stuart continues, “And on the flip side, our experience also means we’re way ahead of rivals in our ability to support the design and specification of your first commercial projects. You’ll have access to all CUK Group brands as well as all the application engineering and technical support you’ll need to win projects within new commercial markets, including hospitality and conferencing. For evidence, check out the scores of case studies on our site.”
“Nobody is denying that there are differences between residential and commercial in technology, approach and knowledge, but they’re getting smaller by the day, which means that CUK is ideally placed at the point of convergence to help our customers get the best of both worlds with high performance, reliability and dedicated technical service. The one thing that CUK will never be is a box mover.”

Focal’s high-end Littoria range of all-weather/marine speakers includes the OD Stone 8 designHVAC controls: the latest challenges and opportunities. Dave Robinson, Managing Director of Sensible Heat Ltd, looks at recent issues impacting HVAC controls.
The greatest issue affecting our part of the building technology market in recent months has undoubtedly been the cost of energy. The HVAC system in a house is, of course, by far the biggest user of energy – for space heating, domestic hot water heating, swimming pools, comfort cooling and ventilation. In some cases, the annual energy bill for a large property can now easily exceed £100K/per anum, and in some extreme cases could run close to seven figures. Bills like these are now (often for the first time) on the radar of high-net-worth property owners – they are concerned about the level of the energy bills and are wondering what can be done to reduce them. This presents an opportunity to us all for up-selling.
HVAC controls have never been very ‘sexy’, they are usually (unless the purchaser has had a particularly good, or particularly bad experience with them in the past) pretty low down on the list of an end-user’s list of ‘must haves’ – they are often considered to be a boring essential, a grudge purchase, like a fire alarm system. However, unlike an alarm system, they do in fact potentially have a pay-back, both in terms of increased comfort (which is difficult to quantify), but also crucially in energy-saving terms (which is a little more tangible).
We’ve found that we are spending much more time discussing energy usage, and how this might be mitigated, with both owners and the teams supporting their properties. Incidentally, isn’t it interesting that when specifications and
drawings are prepared for a new build or major refurbishment, there is little or no reference to projected running costs for the completed
building? Consequently, we’ve increasingly been drawn into discussions prompted by the client who has been shocked by the first tranche of energy bills. One wonders, for instance, when the issue of a cover for the swimming pool was discussed; was energy even mentioned in the discussion? A pool without a cover looks so much slicker in the architect’s portfolio pictures, but it could easily be a £25k per anum decision
So how might we address the reduction of energy usage? There are of course things that can and should be done to the building fabric (better insulation, control of air infiltration, careful use of both passive solar heating and solar shading to prevent overheating, and so on). There are also innovations in heating and cooling plant (heat pumps being the obvious example), but there are also many things that better heating and cooling controls can do to mitigate the use of energy.
The ways to reduce energy consumption using advanced heating controls boil down to three basic topics:
• Better temperature regulation to avoid any spaces overheating (or over-cooling)
• Shutting down areas of the house when they are not in use, or shutting down the whole house when the property is empty
• Ensuring that the heating and cooling plant is maintained properly and is operating to its design parameters
Taking each of these topics in turn, how might we apply our skills and technology to help?
Firstly, accurate control of heating in particular is very important – allowing a space to overheat by only 1 degC can increase energy usage by 10%. So, proper control valves and temperature controllers are essential. For radiators, the mechanical thermostatic valve is notoriously ‘approximate’ in its ability to control temperature – that’s why it has numbers one to five, instead of temperatures. Products like the Honeywell EvoHome radiator controller can help here: with its motorised actuator, built-in sensors and clever control algorithms, it will achieve high degrees of accuracy and repeatability, and it is ideal for retrofit. Meanwhile for new builds, there are other fully-wired solutions. Similarly, for underfloor heating, accurate control is difficult – but for different reasons. For this application, you need a premium controller product to cope with the large thermal mass of the floor, to avoid unstable cycling. We use the Honeywell EvoHome underfloor heating controls because we find their sophisticated fuzzy logic and self-learning algorithms give accurate control over a large range of different floor types and room sizes.
Zoning the building so that every room is separately controllable is essential to maximise energy savings – now we can make ‘live’ only the rooms that are being used, whilst keeping other rooms on ‘standby’ at a lower temperature.
I experienced this for myself last winter – for the first time, I really used the system in my own house (which is a 18th century, poorly insulated property) to concentrate heat in the rooms we were using (at 21-22 degC), and run circulation spaces and unused bedrooms etc at
a lower temperature (around 16 degC). It really worked; despite there being standard doors and lath-and-plaster walls between rooms, it was possible to maintain the temperature differential and hence make an energy saving of some 45% over the previous year
The third area, that of ensuring the HVAC plant is working at maximum efficiency, is possibly the most challenging because it needs not only the ability to monitor the plant’s performance, but also to be able to analyse the monitored data and interpret it; for instance, to identify a likely stuck valve or failed actuator. Maybe the overall control strategy for the plant needs to be revised? Good, detailed knowledge of HVAC plant is a prerequisite – forming a partnership with a good HVAC specialist might be a good idea!
With tools like North’s Commander Hub, which we’ve talked about previously, we can access HVAC systems remotely via a North cloud-based server. No dedicated VPN is needed, the only requirement is that the Commanders on site can access the internet; they then automatically contact the cloud server periodically to save data and receive any changes to settings etc. Furthermore the cloud server records all of the data point values from the site (temperatures, setpoints, status of plant etc) and these can be viewed historically in graphical form. Of course, the data can be complex, and requires some interpretation, but as a tool for professionals this is a powerful weapon indeed.
So, how can we turn these problems into opportunities? Surely the answer has to be, form an AV / HVAC partnership with a friendly specialist and create a joint offering to our clients.
THE EVOLUTION OF TELEVISION: FROM INDOOR ESCAPISM TO OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES
Clare Munroe of TV innovators Videotree examines the install TV landscape.
As we traverse further into the 21st century, the television industry continues to outstrip expectations, demonstrating an unyielding propensity for innovation and an uncanny ability to adapt to consumers’ shifting preferences. In this brave new world of visual technology, a transformation is underway, and it is bringing the TV experience out of the living room and into the great outdoors.
Recent market research reveals that the average British adult spends more than five hours a day in front of the television. This statistic is hardly surprising given our collective appetite for high-quality content, and it seems to suggest that our relationship with TV is deeply entrenched. However, this is far from the whole story. As lifestyles evolve, the setting of our viewing experience is shifting, too.
The concept of outdoor televisions, while not entirely novel, has seen a renaissance. According to the Consumer Electronics Association, about 5.7 million households have outdoor televisions. Indeed, the demand for high-end, weatherproof outdoor TVs is on the rise. Homeowners, in their quest to transform their outdoor living spaces into recreational hubs, are driving this trend.
This new breed of outdoor TVs needs to meet the challenge of providing superior picture quality and brightness in diverse lighting conditions. A case in point is Videotree’s 2023 launch, Aquiom, designed specifically for the outdoor environment. It encapsulates the latest advancements, providing 4K resolution, HDR10+ support, and exceptional brightness – factors instrumental in dealing with glare and delivering a top-tier viewing experience.
But the evolution is not confined to the great outdoors. Inside our homes, TVs are becoming less an appliance and more an integral part of interior design. As the boundaries between technology and aesthetics blur, televisions are no longer just black boxes that come alive at the press of a button. They have metamorphosed into design statements, adding to the aesthetic appeal of our living spaces even when not in use.
MIRROR IMAGE
This is where the concept of mirror TVs has made its mark. A mirror TV, when turned off, blends seamlessly into the decor, doubling as a stylish mirror piece. But when turned on, it transitions into a captivating TV, offering a visual experience par excellence.
Videotree’s innovative Lusiom, a pioneering mirror TV introduced in 2023, epitomises this convergence of art and technology. With its 4K resolution, HDR10 support, an impressive brightness of 800 Nits, and a wide viewing angle of 178°, it’s leading the charge in redefining the boundaries of traditional viewing experiences.
In conclusion, the rise of outdoor TVs and the advent of mirror TVs is not just a fleeting trend. It reflects the shifting paradigm of television consumption, from the static indoor environment to dynamic indoor-outdoor versatility. It’s a testament to the relentless innovation in the industry and serves as a reminder that the next big revolution in our viewing experience might just be around the corner.
What the television industry teaches us is the need to consistently reinvent and reimagine. As we continue to consume more TV content, both the space it occupies in our homes and our lives, and the way we interact with it, will continue to evolve. As we move forward, we can look forward to these shifts not just as advancements in technology, but as enhancements to our overall lifestyle, indoor and out.

FEELING GOOD, BEING BEAUTIFUL
Wellness is about feeling safe, feeling comfortable and relaxed. Imagine, the impact on the client as at the slightest touch the room dims to the right scene, music starts playing, the temperature rises and the curtains close ready for a cosy evening. The integration of all these functions in an intelligent and user-friendly system promotes wellbeing for all who live and visit such a space.
SETTING THE SCENE
In a Basalte Home everything is exactly the way the customer wants. From lighting, music and entertainment to climate and security, end users can personalise a home down to the finest details and control it all with a gentle touch of an app, keypads and design remote. With intelligent products, installers and Basalte brings comfort to the heart of any home. With Basalte Home, it’s possible to create a scene ‘Good Night’. When activated, all lights will switch off at once and the room temperature will drop. It’s also possible to create a scene ‘Relax’. When activated, the lights in the living room will dim and favourite music will fill the room. Everything is in place to create a cozy atmosphere at the slightest touch.
CIRCADIAN SMART LIGHTING
The innovative use of light keeps evolving. It is common knowledge that the light of the sun is crucial for our health and well-being. Therefore, every artificial light source should match the qualities of sunlight as closely as possible. That’s the idea of centrally controlled
circadian lighting: simulate natural daylight. Light can affect our motivation, well-being and productivity. Our physiological response to light depends on things like colour spectrum, intensity and timing. The quality of light in our environment is therefore of great importance when we spend a long time in closed rooms. Especially in times when so many people work from home, this aspect becomes more relevant than ever before.
The colour temperature can easily be controlled using Basalte Home. Colour temperature has a direct impact on a person’s bio-rhythm, so by controlling it as part of an intelligent lighting system, it is possible to influence the mood and behaviour of those in the room. To make it as easy as possible installers can integrate these settings into scenes. When you activate the scene ‘Home Office’, the lights dim up with a cold colour temperature (using bluer frequencies). This kind of light will increase awareness, productivity and well-being during the day. When you activate the scene ‘Relax’, the lights will change to a warmer colour temperature (using amber and red frequencies). This kind of light is used to relax people at night to ensure the body is refreshed, revitalised and reset properly. Smart lighting systems, such as Philips Hue, offer a lot of wireless light devices. These products integrate natively with Basalte Home and create a flexible and complete smart home solution.
FEEL SAFE
With Basalte Home users are always in complete control. The homeowner can provide custom access permissions to their family, guests, and staff, further enhancing security and peace of mind. The integrated smart security system by Basalte offers a total solution, combining functionality, design, and customisation to meet the unique needs and preferences of each homeowner.
At the core, an access control system aims to create a welcoming environment for your loved ones while ensuring that only those granted access can enter and make themselves feel at home. Adding security and access control functionalities elevates comfort and quality of living. When someone calls on our newest luxury door phone Adelante, the homeowner receives the call on his mobile phone or on the touch panels Lena, Ellie or Lisa inside his home. He can see who is calling, engage in two-way communication and decide whether to grant entry or just ask him to leave his package in a safe place.
Adelante’s modular design allows for easy customisation and enhancement of security features. You can implement extra security modules like security cameras, fingerprint recognition, badge reader and more. This comprehensive approach ensures that they can relax and feel secure both when at home or away. But Adelante is more than just a door phone, it is an architectural design statement of a home. It is completely customisable to match the homeowner’s aesthetics, adding a touch of personal style to the security system.
Basalte is a company that believes great design, beautiful objects and innovative technology create a feeling of wellness for every journey into the home by occupiers and guests alike.
LIGHTING THE WAY TO HEALTHIER HOMES
We have seen biophilic design and bringing the outside inside become more important to homeowners and designers recently. Lighting is a key component in that design conversation as the natural cycle of light can have a significant impact on our internal circadian rhythm and our wellbeing. So, how can we make our homes more human-centric and merge the indoors with the outdoors?
Lighting and lighting control systems can play a huge part in ensuring natural light cycles are reflected within our homes and introducing an element of the outside.
Through research and as an industry we now have a breadth of knowledge of how lighting can have an effect on our bodies. Circadian-focused lighting has been linked to health benefits such as heightened concentration, better sleep, and improving our general wellbeing. With the latest developments in lighting technology, we are finally seeing practical solutions to circadian-focused lighting, with a sophisticated lighting control system being central to creating wellness-focused lighting designs.
To support installers; and provide a humancentric lighting design, we at Rako have focused on ensuring our dimmers can create lighting scenes that follow natural light. Additionally, with the refreshed app, installers can tune the
colour temperature to ensure the lighting can reflect how brightness varies throughout the day.
To be able to produce a truly effective circadian-focused lighting design it is important that installers look at a range of factors including the quality and type of light source. Just tuning lighting can produce a great effect of mimicking daylight, but without the correct type of light, achieving the physiological and psychological benefits noted in research, may not be possible. Additionally, to create a seamless circadian lighting cycle, the lighting really needs to be automated to truly replicate the correct environment and light levels for the time of day and geographical location. For installers, this means striking the balance between automation and allowing end users to choose their own lighting level.
Human-centric lighting can also be looked at through different lenses; it is more than just circadian lighting. It is important to remember that supporting wellness will be different from home to home. The most effective example of lighting designers creating wellbeing in a home is when the lighting is personalised and becomes a true reflection of the lives being led in that space. On a recent project, Rako’s lighting controls were installed to set a specific ‘nighttime feed’ scene for a young family with
a baby. The lights turned on at 10%, giving enough visibility whilst maintaining a calm atmosphere that did not shock the sleep cycles of the parents or baby with bright light. With smart lighting controls, the capabilities to produce outcomes like this are at the installer’s fingertips, it just takes the keen ability to draw out these distinct characteristics within a home.
Of course, creating the most effective lighting design within any home depends on the end users and how they understand the lighting can be used to improve their wellbeing and ultimately the goals they set. There is growing awareness among homeowners of the advertised sleep and health benefits of circadian lighting, and this is spurring increasing exploration of this concept within the residential market. However, many homeowners see smart lighting as providing a ‘wow factor’ experience. Whilst this is true, it is important that we continue to educate homeowners on the diverse range of capabilities and potential effects lighting can have in the home.
As the demand for human-centric lighting and biophilic design increases, the knowledge and expertise we need to offer also needs to grow. Control systems can play an important role in introducing natural lighting into a home as well as improving the wellbeing and comfort.
Peter Broome, Director of Rako Controls takes a look at the practicalities of delivering wellness and human-centric systems.
SELLING ‘WELLNESS’
The term ‘wellness’ has become both a blessing and a curse to the custom integration industry. The term’s quite a bit squishy, after all, begging the question: ‘What exactly might be part of a wellness solution in a smart home?’ The answer? Potentially everything.
When we begin to think about wellness technology, there are obvious segments that might provide tangible health benefits – proper air filtration or some kind of drinking water treatment, for example. But access control and cybersecurity help contribute to peace of mind, correct? So any stress reducer of this sort might qualify as ‘wellness’ tech.
Herein lies the ‘wellness challenge’ for the technology integrator embarking on discovery with a savvy client: How does a dealer get around the perception that they’re merely pitching gimmicks?
KNOWING THE TECH COLD
The old saying ‘forewarned is forearmed’ holds here. Any dealer who knows precisely how to back up their presentation of a wellness solution with deep knowledge and hard data will have an advantage when this conversation with the customer begins.
Since space is limited, we’ll use one segment of the business as an illustration: Lighting.
Of all the technology at one’s fingertips, one that’s been very often associated with wellness solutions is lighting – especially systems (this includes shading, by the way) that are based on circadian, ‘human-centric’ cycles. The reason
that artificial light that mimics daylight has been wrapped into the wellness category stems from human evolution. Until very, very recently, natural light drove human activity – we were outdoors most of the time. The industrial revolution and the preponderance of electric light shifted that reality entirely: Now, Europeans and North Americans spend roughly 90% of their time indoors.
It’s completely intuitive, then, to believe that any lighting scheme that mirrors natural light (or introduces it into the home via proper window placement and treatment) would be beneficial to creatures that evolved for centuries under the illumination of the sun. That intuition is being borne out by a growing body of evidence: yes, circadian light is likely very beneficial to humans, according to science. Natural light – or a system that mimics it – improves our sleep, makes us more productive during waking hours, and on and on.
Now that you’ve got a proper handle on why this technology contributes to wellness, it’s time to tackle the what and the how.
THE NUTS AND BOLTS
Here you can really show that potential client that you know your stuff. If you can explain the various types of lighting, how they’re beneficial, and how they can fit into an overall scheme that could help drive a wellness solution, you’re bound to make a positive impression.
Perhaps you could give a quick summary of the tech, something digestible enough for the average listener:
The terms that are relevant to our discussion are ‘lumens’ and ‘Kelvin’ – essentially, brightness and colour temperature. Explaining that ‘cool’ light (heavy on the blue spectrum) coupled with greater brightness actually resembles the midday sun overhead while ‘warm’ light (that’s less bright) mimics dawn or dusk will assist in a client’s understanding of the system. Increasing or decreasing lumens doesn’t qualify as ‘smart’ lighting – it’s just a dimming process. But couple that function with a range of colour changes that occur throughout the day, and you’ve got a ‘tunable white’ luminaire that’s clearly worth the time and effort behind its installation and programming, given the evolutionary evidence you’ve already presented.
The kicker will present itself when you explain that the customer doesn’t need to spend on smart luminaires for every room in the home. By simply pointing out that these solutions are completely unnecessary in, say, a closet, you’ll reinforce your rep as a fair-minded technician who’s looking out for a client’s best interests.
If you present yourself as a dealer with a working knowledge of the why behind a solution that’s touted as ‘wellness tech,’ then back it up with a concise outline of how to achieve that result as efficiently as possible, you’ve gone a long way to establishing the kind of trust that’s critical to your success as a custom integrator. And while that’s especially true when it comes to wellness tech, it’s an approach that will serve you well no matter what you’re selling.
Phillip Pini, Director of Residential Sales, UK Crestron, offers some clarification on how the sector should sell ‘wellness’.

BURNOUT TO BALANCE
David Fell, former system integrator with in-depth knowledge of technology, business development and business strategy on a global scale, continues his ‘Installer Academy’ series exclusively for EI. This month, from burnout to balance: how to manage client expectations and maintain work/ life harmony in the smart home industry.
As a professional in the smart home industry, you know that it’s a fast-paced and demanding field. Clients have high expectations and tight deadlines, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and burnt out. However, it’s crucial to find a way to maintain balance and harmony between your work and personal life. In this article, we’ll explore some practical tips and strategies to help you manage client expectations while caring for yourself.
Whether you’re a junior apprentice, installer, designer, team leader, sales manager
or business owner, these insights will help you stay productive and focused while also enjoying a fulfilling personal life. From setting realistic goals and boundaries to leveraging technology, this article will cover various techniques to help you succeed without sacrificing your wellbeing.
Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress. In the smart home industry, burnout is a common issue due to the constant pressure to meet deadlines, deliver high-quality work, and manage client expectations. Burnout can manifest in various ways, including fatigue, irritability, lack of motivation, and decreased productivity. If left untreated, burnout can lead to serious health issues and long-term consequences for your career. The first step in managing burnout is to recognise the signs and take action to address them. This may involve taking a break from work, seeking professional help, or making lifestyle changes. It’s also
important to identify the root causes of your burnout and address them to prevent future episodes. This may involve setting better boundaries, delegating tasks, or reevaluating your workload.
THE IMPORTANCE OF MANAGING CLIENT EXPECTATIONS
One of the biggest sources of stress in the smart home industry is managing client expectations. Clients often have high expectations and tight deadlines, which can be difficult to meet without sacrificing your wellbeing. However, it’s important to remember that managing client expectations is a crucial part of your job. By setting realistic goals and communicating effectively with your clients, you can avoid misunderstandings and ensure everyone is on the same page. To manage client expectations effectively, it’s important to start by setting clear goals and timelines. This means breaking

down projects into smaller, manageable tasks and setting realistic deadlines for each one. It’s also important to communicate regularly with your clients and keep them updated on your progress. This can help to build trust and prevent misunderstandings. Another key aspect of managing client expectations is to be upfront about what you can and cannot deliver. This means being honest about your skills and expertise and not overpromising or underdelivering. It’s also important to set boundaries and communicate your availability to your clients. This can help to prevent burnout and ensure that you have time for your personal life. Setting realistic goals and boundaries is crucial for managing client expectations and maintaining work/life balance in our industry. This means being honest with yourself about what you can realistically achieve and setting priorities accordingly. It also means setting boundaries to protect your time and energy. One way to set realistic goals and boundaries is to use the SMART method, which involves setting goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timebound. By setting SMART goals, you can ensure that you are focusing on the most important tasks and making progress towards your objectives. It might sound obvious, but another way to set boundaries is to establish a clear work schedule and stick to it. This means defining your working hours and communicating them to your clients and colleagues. It also means setting aside time for breaks and self-care activities, such as exercise, meditation, or spending time with friends and family.
COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES FOR MANAGING CLIENT EXPECTATIONS
Effective communication is essential for managing client expectations and avoiding misunderstandings. This means being clear, concise and professional in your communications. It also means listening carefully to your client’s needs and concerns and addressing them in a timely and respectful manner. One way to improve your communication skills is to use active listening techniques. This involves paying close attention to what your clients are saying, asking clarifying questions, and paraphrasing their concerns to ensure that you understand them correctly. It’s also important to use clear and concise language and avoid jargon or technical terms your clients may not understand. Another key aspect of communication is managing expectations around feedback and revisions. This means setting clear guidelines for how feedback will be provided and how revisions will be handled. It also means being open to constructive criticism and using feedback to improve your work.
TIME MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES TO ACHIEVE WORK/LIFE BALANCE
This is essential for achieving work/life balance. This means finding ways to be productive and efficient without sacrificing your personal life. It also means being flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances. One way to improve your time management skills is to use the Pomodoro technique. This involves breaking your work into 25-minute intervals, or ‘Pomodoros’, with short breaks in between. This can help to improve your focus and productivity while also giving you regular breaks to rest and recharge. Another time management technique is prioritising your tasks based on their importance and urgency. This means focusing on the most important tasks first and delegating or postponing less important tasks. It also means being flexible and adapting to changing priorities as needed.
LEVERAGING TECHNOLOGY TO STREAMLINE YOUR WORK
Technology can be a powerful tool for streamlining your work. This means using software, apps and other tools to automate tasks, organise your work and collaborate with others. It also means staying up-to-date with the latest trends and tools in the industry. One way to leverage technology is to use project management software, such as Asana or Trello. This can help you to organise your tasks, track your progress and communicate with your team members. It can also help you to stay on top of deadlines and ensure that your work is delivered on time. Another way to leverage technology is to use automation tools, such as Zapier or IFTTT. This can help you to automate repetitive tasks, such as sending emails or updating spreadsheets. It can also help you to save time and reduce the risk of errors.
INCORPORATING SELF-CARE INTO YOUR ROUTINE
This is essential for maintaining a work/life balance. This means taking time to care for your physical, mental and emotional health. It
also means being proactive about preventing burnout and stress. One way to incorporate self-care into your routine is to prioritise exercise and physical activity. This can help you to reduce stress, improve your mood and increase your energy levels. It can also help you to stay healthy and avoid health issues related to a sedentary lifestyle. Another way to incorporate self-care is to practice mindfulness and meditation. This can help you to reduce stress and anxiety, improve your focus and concentration and increase your overall wellbeing. It can also help you to stay grounded and centred in the midst of a busy workday.
TIPS FOR MAINTAINING WORK/LIFE HARMONY
Maintaining work/life harmony requires a proactive approach and a commitment to self-care. Here are some tips to help you achieve balance and harmony in your work and personal life:
• Set clear goals and boundaries
• Communicate effectively with your clients and colleagues
• Prioritise your work based on importance and urgency
• Use technology to streamline your work and automate tasks
• Incorporate self-care into your daily routine
• Take breaks and rest regularly
• Stay connected with friends and family
• Practice gratitude and mindfulness
CONCLUSION: EMBRACING BALANCE IN A DEMANDING INDUSTRY
Managing client expectations and maintaining work/life balance requires a proactive approach and a commitment to self-care. By setting clear goals and boundaries, communicating effectively with clients and colleagues, using time management techniques, leveraging technology and incorporating self-care into your routine, you can achieve balance and harmony in your work and personal life.
HIGH HOPES FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE
Simon Gregory, Director at Cinema Rooms, explains, “Our client contacted us in 2019 and was keen to have a dedicated cinema room. The client was clearly a home cinema enthusiast and previously had his old system in Home Entertainment Magazine.
”The client made a visit to the Artcoustic showroom to see what could be achieved in his own home. The project which, while not difficult to win, was subject to delay due to the pandemic. As the rest of the house was having rebuilding work completed the pandemic
caused delays with materials and builders. During this time first fix commenced while the rest of the house was being finished off.”
Discussions continued to get the room which measured 7 x 4m technically correct. After completing a bass simulation starting with them in the preferred locations, the team could then see how the room would react and what bass quality could be expected. To get the correct output to deliver Dolby’s 115db, the room required four subwoofers.
Simon says, “Trying to get the clients to have four subs is not easy, but the customer has seen the bass simulation so it was agreed to go with two Artcoustic sub 3s at the front (two 10in longthrow woofers in each sub) and one Artcoustic sub 4 (employing 4 x 10in long-throw woofers).”
The customer loves 3D movies and with the prospect of the release of new titles such as Avatar: Way Of The Water, was keen to get a projector that was capable of 3D and to have enough 3D glasses for the seven seats that were going into the room.
This customer had high hopes for their very own home cinema space. Cinema Rooms set about making it happen.
Simon adds, “Due to the size of the room and number of seats, we also wanted to get air conditioning in place, but due to the bar and hidden projector we were limited for space. Due to the lens shift capability on the projector, it was decided to move the projector to one side so the ducted air con unit could fit within the bar area.”
BUILDING THE CINEMA
Simon recalls, “The first job we needed to undertake was the build out of the screen and side walls. We built the screen wall out by 300mm and created a carcass to house the Artcoustic LCR’s and sub in the centre of the wall. The void was then backfilled with rockwool
and clad over with OSB leaving the speaker carcass exposed in the centre. The same process was carried out with the side and back walls with much smaller carcasses for side and rear speakers.
“The next job was to create a dropped ceiling to allow for a coffer towards the front of the room at the original ceiling height. The framework was built, filled with rockwool and again clad with OSB.”
Simon adds, “We also created a bespoke bar cabinet along the back wall to house the AV rack, projector and air conditioning unit. Antique mirrors and LED lights were added, as was a custom grill for the projector. We also built a stage to create better viewing for the second tier of seating. The window and curtain coffers were lined with the same material as the bar and stage step cladding to create a reoccurring theme throughout the room.”
The team also applied 12mm foam to the walls and ceiling to help with the acoustic quality of the room and then stretched fabric to create a seamless finish. The majority of the fabric in the room was navy blue with a contrasting gold feature band running around the centre. The fabrics chosen were from the company’s cinema luxe acoustically transparent range. A star scape ceiling was added to the ceiling coffer to finish the room with the coffer perimeter being finished in the same material as the bar, window liner and stage cladding.
Once the room fit out was completed the equipment was installed and calibrated. Multiple subs were installed at front and back
positions to address room modes that were shown in the initial design processes. Simon reveals, “By installing subs at both the front and back, we measured an incredibly flat response in every seat. The system has enough headroom to be able to play Dolby’s reference of bass at 115db down to below 20Hz in the seating positions. The Sony projector offers a fantastic picture with the benefit of lens shift and 3D functionality. The client already had a Oppo Blu Ray offering great picture and sound. We also installed the excellent Zappti for its versatility in movie watching. A Starscape Infinity modular star panel system was added for that wow factor along with Rako lighting control to set the right scene for whatever is being watched.”
ANY PARTICULAR CHALLENGES?
Simon says, “This particular client is a movie fanatic and naturally wanted the biggest screen he could possibly have, but also wanted two rows of seating. We built the stage 100mm taller than we normally would to ensure the full screen could be seen wherever you sat in the room. Due to our experience, most technical issues will be ironed out at the design stage ensuring a stress-free and seamless install.
“The 16:9 screen for sports and movies is still 3.3m wide, 149in diagonal; plenty big enough and technically correct from the main seating position. We of course had the projector offset in the room but you would never know due to the excellent lens shift on the Sony projector.”
Talking of seating, the cinema benefits from two rows of FrontRow Serenity chairs the middle front pair are in the lounger option - for extra comfort.
As for a favourite aspect of this project, Simon reveals, “Our favourite part is how the room sounds! It’s one of the best we have ever done and only with careful planning and acoustic simulations have we been able to achieve this. And thanks to our partners at Cinema Luxe the room looks amazing which has also helped with the sound due the quality of the room build!”
The customer says, “It has been dream to have my own home cinema for a long time. Even though it took longer than planed due to the covid situation and other unforeseen
circumstances, we finally got there in the end and the wait was well worth it. To choose a favourite part of the new cinema room would be hard because everything was so well thought out by Cinema Rooms. The picture and sound and the overall look and feel of the room is amazing and has all come together perfectly.”
The client is going to call the room The Majestic after the movie about an old run-down cinema called the Majestic which has become derelict due to hard times, but the community get together and decide to restore it; nice touch!

CREATE A POINT OF DIFFERENCE WITH CPD
Ben Johnson, Owner at CEDIA Member Aura Home Tech, examines routes to market.
Every business has their own preferred route to market. About eighteen months ago, we took a look at what we were doing and decided that drilling down on builders, architects and interior designers would be the right move for us. As a business, we’re clearly focused on design and installation quality and recognised the longterm value of building strong, collaborative relationships with property professionals and their clients.
With limited time, resources, and budget at our disposal, the question was how do we reach new customers in this segment?
We trialled a number of different activities, including becoming CEDIA Outreach Instructors (COI) able to present Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses to this audience. We’re glad we did – CPD is definitely the way to go for us.
From the audience’s perspective, earning points for attending CPD courses is a requirement for architects and interior designers who want to retain their professional status with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID).
From our side, we can use the CPD course to deliver an important education piece, bringing architects and designers into our world to grow their understanding of what we can achieve, and shattering a few myths and pre-conceptions along the way.
Typically, our industry can struggle with these professionals. They can see what we do as a threat to what they’re trying to achieve
for their clients rather than as an ally who can help. It’s all to easy to end up butting-heads in a confrontation rather than working together to create an amazing home for the client.
Providing CPD training becomes an important way to build a sense of our mutually shared interest from the outset. They can see that our goal is to design our technology solution to complement their vision and their design for the interior. We’re in the same room as they are. We care about great design as much as they do and a collaboration from the design stage of a project is going to deliver a better installation and an excellent finish and experience for the client. For example, we can explore the various loudspeaker options, the impact of different style and finishes on their scheme as well as the effect these choices will have on the performance of the system for the client.
Typically, we know that architects and designers will be engaged before we are brought in on a project. But, if we can close out the CPD presentation with a tour of our demonstration facilities then they can go away with enough real-world knowledge to be confident of having the right initial conversations with their client. Having attended our CPD, they will also know, with confidence, that we are there to support them and be brought into this conversation with their client to act as a trusted part of their design team.
With CPD, we’re building our own credibility as design professionals, not just with architects and interior designers but also with the builders
and other contractors they work with and the clients they represent. Of course, we’re also building trust with an important audience that can bring us the type of business we want, and work with us in a collaborative way that we all understand.
Relationship-building in this way does take time but we can trace significant work for Aura Home Tech from our investment in CPD training. It may not be right for every business but it works for us. It’s a key point of difference for our business.
We’re excited that CEDIA is about to bring out a new RIBA and BIID accredited CPD. Entitled ‘Outdoor Technology: Extending the Living Space’, this is a CPD that will open the eyes of architects and designers to the opportunities not just around discrete, highperformance AV technology for garden spaces, but the importance of Wi-Fi networks and lighting too. This is a fast-growing market. Garden spaces are now routinely seen as an extension of the interior space and, as such, are becoming the responsibility of the architect or interior designer.
Having helped in its development, we can’t wait to present this CPD as part of our offering for property professionals.

Snap One has announced that its Luma x20 family of surveillance products now offers even greater security and privacy for home and business owners by giving them full control over integrators’ system access to view live and recorded video.
According to Snap One Product Manager Derek Webb, the new ‘customer handoff’ feature provides enhanced user control after initial installation, allowing the owners to have privacy while also making it easy to reinstate integrator access when maintenance or assistance is required. This new feature is now available to all Luma x20 users globally.
Removing integrator access to live video and recordings ensures no misuse of the data, and there is no off-site transmission of the video without the knowledge of the owners.
Once a Luma x20 installation is complete, Partners can send the client a message through the OvrC platform which the client can click through to gain full control in five minutes.
There is no assistance required, no passwords to remember and no port forwarding involved. In fact, this new update provides better privacy and security than traditional methods like Dynamic DNS and port forwarding.
If a Partner needs to access live video for troubleshooting purposes, they can send a request via OvrC, giving the customer the option to grant access.
There is also an option to set a timer for integrator access, so it will automatically revert to owner-only access after a set time period.
The NDAA-compliant x20 product family is the first Luma product line to include full OvrC integration, simplifying processes and client calls for Partners that can reduce maintenance costs and provide better assurance of 24/7 operation.
New features also include AI-powered human and vehicle detection, easy video sharing, synchronised multi-channel event playback, smooth integration with control systems and expanded Color at Night cameras. Luma x20 NVRs offers ample storage with the ability to hold up to 14 terabytes per hard drive bay.

choice instead based on price, performance and their system’s requirements.
Stand out features include the strong and lightweight, extremely rigid C-CAM cones which have a much higher resistance to bending stress and therefore exhibit much greater fidelity over their entire operating range for a cleaner, clearer more precise lifelike sound presentation.
Also included is, Rigid Surface Technology II (RST II) – the first time it has been applied to a Monitor Audio subwoofer, which significantly increases cone rigidity, allowing the radiating surfaces to resist the mechanical bending forces that can twist the shape of conventional driver cones, which can distort sound.
Monitor Audio has released the Anthra Subwoofer Series, a standalone three-model range that majors on musicality and depth.
The introduction is described as a new compact, high-fidelity subwoofer series featuring powerful amplification, driving the latest metaldriver technology with intuitive app functionality for advanced DSP and setup configuration.
The range introduces a trio of highperformance powered subwoofers, each of which have been engineered with a focus on
musicality and control. Through the expert application of sound acoustic knowledge and solid design principles, the Anthra Subwoofer Series delivers deep bass with musicality and agility, says the maker.
Strong build quality, intuitive controls and a user-friendly app round out what is presented as an exceptional package. Plus, the enhanced flexibility that a standalone series offers enables a user to select a subwoofer independent of a speaker series, with their

with upgraded and improved magnets to the motor systems relative to the 801 D4 model. It also includes an enhanced aluminium top plate beneath its Turbine Head midrange enclosure; this new design uses a new optimised skeletal structure and carefully placed damping material to significantly reduce unwanted resonance from the top of the enclosure. The result is more midrange transparency and openness to the already strong performance of the 801 D4.
Billed as the ultimate version of the acclaimed 800 Series Diamond loudspeaker range, the Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Signature has arrived.
Since the brand was founded in 1966, only seven series of loudspeaker have carried the prestigious Signature mark – a reflection of its prestige and exclusivity. The 801 D4 Signature and 805 D4 Signature build on a heritage that stretches back to the Silver Signature loudspeaker of 1991, originally developed
as a posthumous tribute to the founder of the company, John Bowers.
The larger model in the new Signature range is the 801 D4 Signature, a powerful three-way floor-standing loudspeaker that builds on the specification of the 801 D4 as found in Abbey Road Studios.
Based on the brand’s Diamond Dome tweeter and Continuum Cone FST midrange drive unit, the 801 D4 Signature adds powerful twin 250mm (10in) Aerofoil Cone bass drivers

Small, compact, and now with a keypad, DoorBird has expanded its portfolio and has now integrated the keypad into the smallest door station.
The manufacturer of IP video door intercom systems has successfully added more technology to the most compact series and is bringing the new products, D1101KV and D1102KV, to the market.
DoorBird is known worldwide as a manufacturer of smart technology and exclusive
design. The IP video door intercom systems stand out due to high quality paired with a unique design. Now, DoorBird has successfully added even more technology to the most compact series: there is now an option to integrate a keypad into the small door stations from the D11x series. This technology allows residents or visitors to enter the building or, e.g., a package delivery service to access the property using a PIN code completely without the need for keys. Customised, programmable events can be activated via the 12 buttons, e.g., to activate or deactivate an alarm system or control a compatible smart lock. Both products, in addition to being PoE-capable, are also Wi-Fi-capable, so they work on the Wi-Fi network and do not require a LAN cable. Due to their compact design, the new models are particularly

relevant for single-family houses and smaller commercial properties that only have limited space for the installation of the door stations and where the larger D2101KV and D2102KV models are not suitable. As a result, users of the smallest, narrow DoorBird door stations can also enter their house or property without keys. The PIN codes are created for permanent or temporary accesses, e.g. for deliveries of online orders with the help of the intuitive app. The options are diverse and customisable.
The D1101KV, with a call button, is primarily used in single-family homes and the D1102KV, with two call buttons, is used primarily in duplexes.
Both products are still equipped with all of the familiar functions of the D11x series, like open API interfaces, geofencing, strongquality video and audio, motion sensor with 4D technology and Bluetooth. Like all DoorBird products, the D1101KV and the D1102KV stand out due to their easy installation, says the maker.
Control and automation manufacturer RTI has announced that the RTI control platform now integrates with Ajax Systems, the Ukraine-based developer and manufacturer of professional security systems sold worldwide. The new RTI driver enables control and automation of Ajax’s
Jeweller series wireless security devices within an RTI control system.
“Ajax is an important global provider of wireless home security systems, and we are thrilled to launch the new Ajax driver,” says Neal Ellsworth, Director of Product Management
at RTI. “The integration enables custom integrators worldwide to quickly add Ajax security devices to their clients’ RTI control and automation systems, elevating the smart home user experience.”
With the new driver, Ajax security system control can be managed through the RTI system. The integrator can add functionality to the control system that will allow the homeowner to arm or disarm the entire Ajax system or individual groups (zones); provide feedback indicating the status of connected devices, including malfunctions; and support events to trigger driver functions or alerts based on feedback received from Ajax System.
“Ajax was built from the ground up to rethink the traditional approach to security systems by being easily adapted and expanded based on changing security needs,” says Rob Harman, Director of Sales, North America at Ajax Systems. “Now, with this driver, Ajax security can be controlled from within RTI systems for even more assurance and flexibility, adding value to every installation.”
