L

ighting takes the focus of the final ECN quarterly supplement of 2017. Lighting is a cornerstone of the industry, and with the darkness of winter setting in and the lighting season upon us, it is as important as ever. Lighting can be used to change the entire look of an interior, save energy and improve efficiency, and make a building intuitive to its inhabitants. Indeed, it is experiencing a revolution in invention and forward thinking – as we saw at this year’s LuxLive, which showcased all the ways in which we are changing how we look at lighting and what it can do for us. In this supplement, you’ll find a collection of case studies that put lighting to its best possible use. Leading experts discuss the problems facing the industry in ensuring the best quality of lighting products, as well as the changing role of the wholesaler. We also take a look at just how smart lighting can get when integrated with sensors that monitor sound and temperature.

RENOVATION INNOVATION CMD discusses why wireless lighting is the perfect solution when repurposing industrial buildings into offices.

I

n the late ‘90s, Shoreditch, a previously run-down area in London’s East End, set the bar for successfully repurposing old industrial buildings into uberstylish, design-conscious work spaces and subsequently raised the profile (and property prices) of the area. Aside from the potential return on investing in an up-and-coming area, there are many aesthetic benefits to this type of renovation, not least the amazing original features that hint towards the buildings’ past life. However, repurposing an old industrial building into an office fit for modern-day working practicalities doesn’t come without its challenges, especially when original features can sometimes restrict the installation of essential elements, such as lighting and wiring.

Reduced running costs One of the most attractive features of an industrial building is the amount of available space. However, on a practical level, larger spaces require more lighting, and as lighting accounts for an average of 40% of building operation costs, it goes without saying that this is an area that can be a huge financial drain. The beauty of wireless lighting is that you have custom control of your environment and can remotely manage the lighting levels and timings throughout the entire facility. By configuring lighting so that it is only on when it is needed — and at a brightness necessary for the task and/or time of day — you can save up to 50% on energy wasted due to lighting.

4 | December 2017

smartphones, allowing switches and sensors to be installed almost anywhere within the workspace.

Consistent distribution

“The beauty of wireless lighting is that you have custom control of your environment.”

You can harvest any available daylight and keep artificial lighting to a minimum to complement natural light, as well as configuring lighting to operate only during working hours, varying brightness according to ambient lighting throughout the day. Motion sensors will also register occupancy to signal whether devices need to be on or off, minimising energy use in empty rooms.

Minimal disruption When faced with a striking, exposed brick wall, the last thing you want to do is cover it with visible wiring; likewise, if the walls are plastered, the distressed original plaster can also serve as a feature in itself. In a modern office, wires would simply be concealed behind the wall surface; however, this can prove to be problematic in an old building, as time-worn walls are unlikely to stand up to significant drilling, and may result in excessive cracking or crumbling due to the age of the original plaster. Aesthetically, this is obviously not great, and there is also the potential risk of causing costly structural damage. Wireless lighting presents the ideal solution for avoiding these problems, as the entire set-up requires minimal installation and disruption of walls — with some models you can even use existing fixtures to install controllers. Once the basic set-up is in place the entire system is controlled wirelessly, via tablets or

When breaking down a large openplan space into smaller offices or work stations, you may find that the individual spaces are dictated by the positioning of windows, beams, pipes and supporting walls. As a result, office spaces are likely to be inconsistently sized, with some benefitting from more natural light than others. Again, a controllable wireless lighting system can help balance the lighting levels across work stations, providing different intensities of light according to available natural light. By remotely managing the lighting of a building ‘light by light’, it is also possible to create mood lighting bespoke to particular spaces. For example, an area that receives little or no natural light could be made into a creative work space, enhancing the mood of the area with considered low lighting.

Added flexibility In some cases, industrial buildings may be listed, or the set-up may make it physically impossible to carry out the level of refurbishment that you may wish. Either way, it is highly likely that you will need to be flexible and find alternative solutions to some of the traditional refurbishment methods to help you achieve the end result that you require. The main thing to keep reminding yourself is that the building was formally used for a totally different purpose, and designed purely with that end use in mind; never in their wildest dreams did the original architects consider that one day the building would house a media company or such like. With that thought in mind, embrace the quirks and imperfections, highlight the original features, and where possible, find innovative technology to unite the modern day with the past. GREENBROOK

THE RIGHT SPECS GreenBrook discusses the challenges facing contractors, specifiers and wholesalers when it comes to ensuring product quality and performance.

G

reenBrook is renowned for the quality of our products, and we are now bringing our experience of manufacturing to the LED lighting industry. Already established as one of the major lighting manufacturers in the UK, GreenBrook Electrical is passionate about supplying high-quality and reliable LED fittings to the market that are independently tested and verified. There are more and more LED companies entering the market at the moment offering non-compliant products, but as active members of both BEAMA and the LIA we are working hard to try and stamp this out. The UK will be faced with many challenges over the next few years where product quality and performance will become the forefront of choice for contractors, specifiers and wholesalers. Standards are rightly increasing and this should be embraced by responsible manufacturers to lead the way in demanding high-quality, performance and compliance from all their products. In our industry, the specification of the lighting products we sell are often determined and selected by the lumen output stated on the packaging or marketing material. In speaking with our technical colleagues and consultants at the LIA, we have established that the LED lamp output values (lumens) can vary dramatically depending on which values are being quoted. This information can be very misleading as to what will actually be achieved upon installation, and this is dependent on a number of different parameters – i.e. whether the

product has a clear or opaque lens, the heat dissipation values it offers and basic manufacturing variations – all of which can point to a loss of around 20% of the light output from the ‘raw’ lamp output. We feel claims should not be made without performance evidence anymore and we urge you to question these statements yourself. The request for IES files, reports showing results/ certificates from independent test houses and conformance certification must become recognised as standard practice for contractors and consultants when pricing projects. GreenBrook Electrical’s lighting products are all independently tested. We are proud to manufacture high-quality LED lighting fittings and want to increase our LED lighting brand in the UK. GreenBrook Electrical launched the VELA compact dimmable fire-rated lighting range in March 2017 and instantly raised the bar in fire-rated downlights. Our 40mm high VELA Compact range became the smallest fitting to have insulation placed directly over the top. We have a full, independent thermal test from the LIA and can boast large projects with leading blue chip companies and electrical contractors. GreenBrook Electrical has now launched the new VELA Advance LED fire-rated fitting to the market. We are confident this new range will become

one of the highest specified products in LED fire-rated lighting, as it has had rave reviews from our wholesalers and contractors alike. These shallow 9W, IP65 LED fire-rated fittings, with a true 92lm/w output, will offer a performance that meets the high demands of specifiers and contractors. Easy-to-install with fixed, tilt and antiglare options available in 3,000K and 40,00K, all fittings offer interchangeable bezel finishes of black, satin chrome, polished chrome and gold – ideal for both domestic and commercial applications. LEDVANCE

CHANGE THE CHANNEL Ledvance explores the challenges arising from the changing role of the wholesaler.

S

taying relevant is a challenge many traditional businesses – and indeed industries – are currently battling to overcome, and the electrical installation market is no exception. Specialised, traditional wholesalers are having to adapt to a changing industry, which is being driven by several factors, including the shifting requirements of electrical installers and the growth of pure online players.

Reinvention is key Recent European research undertaken by the USP Marketing Consultancy interviewed 1,200 electrical installers across Europe.† The study highlighted that wholesalers have to consider reinventing themselves in order to add value. UK installers are largely happy with the traditional wholesale. According to the findings, 96% of respondents say they are satisfied with the current payment conditions wholesalers offer. Satisfaction is also high for product delivery (84%), the need to not hold any stock (83%) and the provision of knowledge and networks (75%). Even with these ratings, wholesalers should not get too complacent. This is because the ratings of other channels, such as e-commerce compared to the traditional wholesale, is quite balanced, suggesting the playing field is even.

In the UK, 84% of businesses believe most attention needs to be paid to competitive pricing in relation to other purchasing channels. Interestingly, this same trend was present for all seven countries, emphasising the importance. Logistical performance (70%), warranty policy (67%) and technical support for installation companies (63%) are the other important areas to be improved, while investments in websites/webstores and providing product training are of least importance for UK installers. These findings suggest the wholesaler market is still in a strong position, but this could all change if other channels continue their rapid rate of development. Wholesalers continue to be seen as a trusted partner, but still have to embrace change. The loyalty being shown among installers is starting to diminish. They clearly face a battle on their hands and will have to be willing to embrace change if they want to survive.

“Recent European research highlighted that wholesalers have to consider reinventing themselves in order to add value.”

Stand still, fall behind It appears that, for those who aren’t considering jumping ship, loyalty comes at a price. Electrical installers indicated that, in order for them to continue buying through this channel, they expect wholesalers to keep developing themselves in several areas.

Graphs taken from European Electrical Installation Monitor: The changing role of the wholesaler by USP Marketing Consultancy

% (strongly) agree

Despite the traditional wholesaler currently occupying a strong position in the distribution structure, a considerable number of installers are already preparing for a future where products are no longer purchased through this channel. This is illustrated by the fact that 19% of installers admitted they would consider changing their purchasing preference in the future, providing the third largest share of businesses behind those in France and Belgium. The good news for wholesalers is that the majority (68%) of UK installers believe they will stay loyal to their wholesalers and aren’t likely to turn to another purchasing channel, suggesting that the existence of wholesalers isn’t in danger of disappearing any time soon.

Ledvance.indd 10

The likeliness not to buy from a traditional wholesaler appears to be more dependent on country than it is on product type. Of eight different product groups – cables and wiring, switches/socket outlets, lighting and luminaries, electrical enclosures, detectors, electrical heating, access control and home automation systems installation – there were few significant differences among UK installers. However, a considerable proportion of installers indicated they would switch to other channels if they start outperforming the wholesaler market. For example, 44% would consider switching if the wholesale was being outperformed in payment conditions, suggesting that loyalties are being tested and installers are beginning to have their heads turned. This means wholesalers can’t afford to stand still and will have to consider adapting their strategy to keep installers on-side.

Aspects wholesalers should be developing more on, in order for installers to keep buying there – UK (N=200)

SOUND ADVICE Sensors can now monitor sound and temperature at the same time, says Paul Jones, B.E.G. UK sales director for UK and Ireland.

O

ver the last few years, more and more companies are integrating smart lighting control systems into their business processes. Lighting in offices and industrial spaces has a proven, positive effect on well-being, productivity and performance. In fact, effectively lit and pleasant working environments have many benefits, such as promoting an attractive company image, encouraging high calibre recruits and, most importantly perhaps, letting businesses make substantial savings on energy bills. The technology behind these systems is advancing rapidly and one of the latest innovations is the integration of sound and temperature KNX occupancy detectors into one self-contained unit for the very first time.

Sound monitoring Presence detectors which control the lighting in a room with built-in sound monitoring have been available on the market for some time. Sound monitoring does not just mean if you clap, a light comes on. It is more

12 | December 2017

BEG.indd 12

about the ability to detect activity within a room where the layout might restrict the operational use of traditional motion detectors, such as within cubicles in changing rooms or washrooms. This innovative, problem-solving sensor means that when normal presence detection is not possible, the sound sensor takes over allowing you to deliver the optimum light levels effectively and efficiently.

Temperature monitoring

increasing the efficiency and quality of your operations. For the more sophisticated building management systems you can now acquire KNX sensors with built-in sound monitoring and built-in thermostats, which monitor temperature too. The integrated temperature sensor is designed to detect three values in a room: the room temperature, the light level on the ceiling and, thirdly, the sensor detects moving sources of heat and automatically switches the light according to the ambient luminosity. An integrated temperature sensor also means a separate sensor will no longer have to be fitted to the wall, which will save on installation time and expense. The benefit of having both sound and temperature monitoring incorporated into one KNX sensor means the energy savings can be even greater, while reducing a company’s carbon footprint further. It also provides building managers with one KNX product that is effectively monitoring two different physical quantities.

Versatile, user-friendly lighting controls let you deliver the right levels of light exactly where and when they are required,

For further information, visit www.beg-luxomat.com

Run-on time saves energy Thanks to these new sophisticated developments, these smart lighting systems ensure energy is never wasted. The run-on time begins as soon as the presence of a person is no longer detected. If the presence of a person is detected again during the run-on time, the run-on time resets itself. If no presence is detected during the run-on time the fade time is started as soon as the run-on time, expires, and the lights goes out.

RECOLIGHT

WASTE NOT Nigel Harvey, CEO of lighting compliance scheme Recolight, explains how electrical contractors can get recycling of waste lighting free of charge.

T

he rapid transition from fluorescent lighting to LED has seen major roll-outs of LED integrated light fittings across the UK. That is great news for energy and cost saving, but it is important to remember that the UK WEEE regulations mean that companies can insist that the supplier of new fittings recycles the waste lamps and luminaires for free. Recycling, particularly of waste lamps, can be costly. Missing the trick of getting your supplier to pay for the recycling could leave many contractors well out of pocket – and all too often, that is exactly what happens, with the contractor footing the bill for recycling costs. When traditional light fittings are exchanged for new ones, that will usually produce significant volumes of waste fluorescent lamps and luminaires, and waste batteries where emergency lighting is replaced. By law, all producers of new fittings are required to be members of a WEEE compliance scheme. The WEEE compliance scheme is responsible for managing its producer members’ recycling obligations under the regulations. Therefore, the fittings

14 | December 2017

“Promoting that you take care of the displaced lighting can also give you a competitive advantage for winning contracts.”

producer can easily request this of their WEEE scheme. The WEEE compliance scheme is the right organisation to collect and recycle waste electricals. They do this day in, day out, and should have a countrywide network of logistics and recycling contractors. They can also provide certificates of recycling or destruction on request. These can be used to show your customer that their waste lighting has been disposed of and recycled responsibly. Some WEEE schemes may specify a minimum quantity to qualify for free collection and recycling. In the case of Recolight, this is 1,000 waste lamps. In addition to the cost savings that should be obtained through access to free recycling, there are other good reasons for contractors getting waste electricals handled in this way. Promoting that you take care of the displaced lighting can give you a competitive advantage for winning contracts. The hassle of arranging collection of waste is gone. Lamp recycling is costly,

and so to get this funded by the producer is an excellent outcome. It often results in better environmental outcomes. If treating the waste fittings is left to the local scrap dealer, there is a risk that they may not be treated correctly. Conversely, a WEEE scheme is required to apply best available treatment methods to any WEEE they collect. It should also result in reduced costs and hassle for your customer. No need for them to deal with additional waste streams. For the luminaire producer involved, the process should also be free of charge, where the producer is a member of a scheme such as Recolight. In any case, WEEE schemes can be expected to benefit from economies of scale, so their own costs should be much lower. This approach also ensures that the recycling is correctly recorded in the government’s WEEE recycling figures, published each year. For further information, visit www.recolight.co.uk

KEMPS

À LA MODE Kemps Architectural Lighting describes how its LED lighting set the mood in a selection of luxury suites at The Berkeley hotel in London.

A

s industry-leading lighting specialists, Kemps Architectural Lighting is constantly striving to push new boundaries and create game-changing, inspired lighting solutions. It’s this visionary ethos that’s driven the company to develop one of its most pioneering product offerings to date – Proteus. Kemps’ Proteus range shares its name with the mythological Greek god. Its name also stems from the adjective ‘protean’, which means versatile and capable of many forms. As the name suggests, Proteus is highly flexible, versatile and adaptable. It’s precisely why Kemps were called in by George Sexton Associates (GSA) to supply the LED lighting for the recent redevelopment of the five-star The Berkeley hotel, which is located in the heart of London. Situated in Kensington, The Berkeley is renowned for its stunning interior and is extremely proud of treading its own path for more than 100 years. Taking style, comfort and service to new levels, the venue boasts standout rooms that have been created by the brightest minds in the design world.

Kemps were specified to provide more than 1km of ambient 2,700K warm white Proteus LED lighting to subtly complement the redesign of a selection of the hotel’s luxury suites. It was essential that the fittings were of the highest quality and blended seamlessly into the premium rooms that they were being installed in. With the hotel’s décor subtly balancing traditional elegance with contemporary chic, the lighting also needed to underpin this key aesthetic requirement in all areas, too. Paying close attention to detail, Kemps supplied Proteus RGBW for the ballroom ceilings and a bespoke Proteus baffle system to wash light down the perimeter walls. As well as enhancing the furnishings, the lighting also needed to be adaptable to different times of day. Kemps therefore made sure that the lighting incorporated additional 0-10V dimming, which is controlled via a wall-mounted Lutron touch plate in every suite. As a result, guests can easily set the tone of the lighting, depending on their individual requirements, day or night.

Forefront of design

With atmosphere meaning everything to a hotel of such a world-class status, the subtle versatility of Proteus made it the perfect match. Proteus is a slim, linear LED fixture that’s been manufactured using OSRAM Duris LEDs. Its colour consistency and rendering means that it effortlessly creates an elegant finish throughout the hotel’s luxury suites.

From the cutting-edge design of the glass entrance to the artistry of every Prêt-àPortea pastry, The Berkeley has never been afraid to make a statement. Through its long collaboration with designers and passion for creativity, it’s proud to have created a hotel at the forefront of design.

“Proteus is a slim, linear LED fixture that’s been manufactured using OSRAM Duris LEDs.”

While it may have been installed on the ceilings and walls at The Berkeley, this range of LED linear is available in a wide range of profiles that are suitable for recessed and suspended installation. It can deliver efficiencies of over 106 lm/W and has been designed in three power consumptions – 7W, 11W and 17W. Each product is also available in increments of 50mm, thanks to Kemps’ unique printed circuit board, which is designed and manufactured in the UK. More specifically, the Proteus RGBA/ RGBW includes, as specified in the name, RGBA and RGBW options. The RGBA fixtures project a warm shade of white and shades of gold, yellow and orange. Additionally, adding amber to standard colours broadens the colour spectrum. While the RGBW fixtures project a cool shade of white and are ideal for colourmixing pastels. 2 Retail Displays in Leicester creates highquality, bespoke retail display counters within prestigious retail outlets. With over 100 years’ experience within retail manufacturing and installation, they manufacture eyecatching displays for some of the world’s most iconic brands. With a commitment to choosing sustainable materials and minimising waste, P2 wanted to improve the general light level throughout its workshop and warehouse to ensure workers had a high quality of light to work in. “We needed bright lighting in our workshop to enable us to create our projects with accuracy, so it was important that the lumen output was high, and also working in a dusty environment, we needed lighting that would be immune to dust particles,” says Adam Cooper of P2. GEWISS’ Smart [3] LED non-corrosive luminaires were supplied by local electrical wholesaler, Landmark Electrical Supplies, as they have a high IP69 rating, providing excellent protection against the ingress of dust or condensation.

INTEGRAL

HOT SPOT Integral explains how its Spotless strip is taking linear lighting to a new level.

T

he benefits of LED lighting are guiding us toward a new range of applications. Designers have been increasingly inspired by new features that have enabled a more creative approach to lighting schemes. For instance, the longevity of LED fixtures has presented the opportunity to embed light sources within the surfaces of an interior. The recessed LED strip has become one of the popular design elements to arise from the technique of embedding directly into a wall, ceiling or floor – using extrusions or profiles. The intention is to create a seamless strand of light. However, many existing LED strips reveal a dotted line, even when diffused. Integral LED’s new Spotless strip product has tackled this flaw and promises to take linear LED lighting to a new level. Lines are important in interior design as they draw the eye to a focal point. A linear pattern can also disrupt the squareness of a room, making the lighting

scheme itself a key decorative feature. Slot features are nothing new of course; we have been concealing lights within the fabric of a room since electric light appeared on the scene. However, LED has invented new possibilities. Linear lighting has created an opportunity for discrete downlighting, wall washing and illuminating fabrics and curtains. Beyond a functional role, lines of recessed strip have become a contemporary decorative design feature in both domestic and corporate interiors. Grid lines of recessed linear LED strip are intentionally visible, and a single uniform line of diffused illumination is a desired effect. The mark of a professional lighting scheme is the refinement of the light and many clients require linear illumination that avoids hot spots in a visible LED strip. Integral’s Spotless range utilises very small LEDs (2016 SMD) arranged in a close formation (300 per metre) that effectively eliminates the visible shadow present in alternative LED strips. This creates the effect of a homogenous line of

light, particularly when installed within an aluminium profile. The Spotless strip also has a high colour rendering index of CRI 90 and is very bright at up to 1550 lm/M, which means the strip can be used to create custom luminaires. This makes the product ideal for highly creative recessed designs that are only limited by the designer’s imagination. “Designers and clients are increasingly inspired by recessed LED lighting features and bespoke luminaires. Now there is an LED strip product which is designed specifically for the purpose and meets the level of finesse that professional lighting schemes demand,” comments Ya-Ju Yang, product manager at Integral LED. Integral LED’s Spotless LED strip is powered by 18W per metre and is available in warm 2,700K or white 4,000K colour temperature from leading distributors and wholesalers early in the New Year. CARBON8

LIGHT EVOLUTION Carbon8Lighting has introduced the new LED floodlight to its Discus range of LEDs. Here, the company showcases the floodlight’s unique and innovative features.

C

arbon8Lighting has just unveiled its new Discus LED floodlight that offers an unparalleled combination of performance, quality and flexibility in a unique design. Part of the successful Discus LED range, the new luminaire is available in 50W to 600W versions, using a common modular 50W LED ‘block’ and incorporating the reliability and performance of other fittings in the range. The issue with the ‘traditional’ style LED floodlights to date is that the components are built into a case design that pre-dates LED. The result is a product that’s a compromise and, although perfectly acceptable, is limited in ultimate performance and cannot fully exploit

22 | December 2017

Carbon8.indd 22

the fantastic benefits that the latest LED technology can offer. The Discus LED floodlight incorporates substantial improvements in performance combined with numerous clever features, which include a choice of five unique precision lenses that have been specifically designed for the Discus floodlight to guide the light to exactly where it is required. With this technology, the Discus floodlight maximises efficacy while minimising secondary glare and light pollution. The Discus LED floodlight has a tough cast aluminium/polycarbonate body, an IP65 rating and an operating temperature ranging from -25° to 40°, making it safe for operation in harsh conditions. The luminaire has a colour temperature of 5,000k (4,000k and 6,500k available to order) which provides an excellent colour rendering of >70 (>80 available to

order). The floodlight has beam angle options of 30x30, 60x60, 90x90, 85x135, 85x90 and achieves typical lumens per watt of 130. The Discus floodlight range sits perfectly alongside Carbon8Lighting’s hugely successful Discus LED high bay to offer total lighting solutions for warehouse, factory, stadium, airport and retail applications, both indoors and outside. The Discus floodlight range is covered by Carbon8Lighting’s five-year premier care warranty. Should there be a fault at any point during the five-year warranty, Carbon8 will send an advance replacement fitting to site, pay up to £250+VAT towards the exchange and collect the swapped fitting from site. As well as minimising downtime, the warranty reassures customers investing in the Discus floodlight that there will be no hidden cost of ownership.
