T

his year’s event focuses on the first major upheaval of spectrum change since the digital switchover. More of the ultra-high frequency (UHF) is being allocated for mobile use, so UK terrestrial TV is making the necessary changes required.

For many, this heralds what they see as a migration of our TV viewing to a broadband delivery in the long-term.

For the immediate future, it is time that UK households will need guidance on coping with channel changes. It is a pivotal moment in our history as the CAI celebrates 40 years of representation.

Current senior executive of the CAI, Tim Jenks, will start proceedings at Evolving Connectivity 2018 by introducing his replacement, Peter Sealey, who will outline how he sees the industry’s leading confederation develop within a new framework of audiovisual delivery.

Peter will overlap with the retiring Tim Jenks by joining the CAI payroll on April 6. This will hopefully allow a smooth transition until Tim Jenks ends his 24 years of CAI service on June 18 this year.

Returning for another gaze into his crystal ball is the Digital TV Group’s chief executive, Richard Lindsay-Davies. He will again look at how the audiovisual market is developing.

Following on closely will be another chief executive, Ben Roome, who heads up DMSL/at800. Charged with mitigating the effects of the next frequency auction, Ben will brief the industry on how the viewers needing aerial attention as a result of the 700 MHz re-allocation will be handled.

Graham Plumb, Ofcom’s principal broadcast specialist, will give the regulator’s view of the same topic. Freeview’s market director, Owen Jenkinson, makes a welcome return to talk about how Freeview remains a major success story despite the pundit viewpoint that internet–based TV is soon to be the major platform as frequency spectrum is eroded.

Wrede, brings an update on where UHD and 4K has reached, along with how signal distribution is adapting to the new satellite receiver technology capable of delivering UHD. Couple all this with the UK’s only nationwide exhibition dedicated to signal reception and networking and you have an unmissable event for the industry calendar.

riven by IoT, smart buildings are gaining wide acceptance amongst business owners.

Just as people are getting used to connected devices and voice recognition at home, thanks to Alexa and the Google Assistant, they’re also looking at workplaces for ways in which smart technology can improve energy efficiency and reduce business costs.

For savvy electrical contractors, there are opportunities to diversify into a custom install market. In all likelihood, this kind of connectivity should become a standard requirement in the next five to 10 years, so contractors who make the move now will steal a march on competitors and gain invaluable experience.

As with any popular trend, there’s an element of jumping on the bandwagon, so it’s important to put practical benefits at the centre of any conversation about smart technology. The good news is that, when it comes to lighting control, thinking ‘smart’ is nothing new.

ccording to the latest market report from AMA Research – Home Automation Market Report: UK 2017-2021 – the UK home automation market is worth £160 million annually. IFTTT (If This Then That) Many smart home products are also compatible with IFTTT technology, which links smart devices to external apps. The possibilities of IFTTT are limitless and it is a great way of using smart home products to their full capabilities.

ENLIGHTENING IDEAS B.E.G. explains how the first installation of its new DALISYS system is helping a new hi-tech comprehensive school building in Germany achieve its lighting vision.

lautopf School has a large 400m² learning centre, as well as smaller classrooms and corridors which are occupied for short amounts of time.

This means lighting levels and timings needed to be flexible and responsive to the type of activity occuring in each space.

The DALISYS lighting control system from German manufacturer B.E.G. was ideal for this large building complex because it can send individual operating commands, triggered by a user or the environment, to multiple zones simultaneously.

The DALISYS is a high-performance, efficient lighting system which works on the principle of distributed intelligence to

ensure a high level of operational reliability is achieved. Its modular, networkable system is also entirely scalable, as required.

This advanced lighting management system includes a wide range of multi-sensors, including the new B.E.G. PureColour wellness sensor for control of light colour in tune with natural daylight.

The Blautopf School cost around £10 million to build, so the B.E.G. DALISYS system was ideal for the learning centre as it will reduce the school’s energy consumption and bills by dimming lighting in certain zones of the large space which are not being occupied by students.

The corridors also had B.E.G. DALISYS sensors installed as students gather together for short bursts in these spaces,

during break times. The products ensure sufficient light is available during these brief but busy times and then switches the lighting off when there is no activity, combining optimum energy efficiency with maximum convenience.

This product also includes a ‘guided light’ feature which enables it to lead students through the building in a ‘pool of light’. The whole system works on one level, but also vertically in the entire atrium, over different floors. The B.E.G. DALISYS sensors can be distributed over several routers, connecting the light across subdivisions. B.E.G. also provided safety lighting.

SMART SAFETY Doepke takes a closer look at safety requirements for smart buildings and EV supply equipment.

S

mart buildings and the basic hazards associated with the use of damaged or faulty electrical equipment can be easily overlooked, due to complexity of the installation.

For example, one of the control measures to reduce the severity of the shock hazard relies on the correct selection of the appropriate RCD, when connecting an EV conductive charging systems to the building supply.

The existing clause 722.531.2.101 in BS7671 Amd 3 is an example of where hazard control requirements can be interpreted incorrectly, resulting in the loss of the additional protection measure. A common, but incorrect interpretation of this

clause (see below) is that, if it is not known that the value of 6 mA DC will be exceeded, then it is safe to use a Type A RCD. The clause states, “…The RCD protecting the charging point shall be at least type A… If it is known that the DC component of the residual current exceeds 6 mA then a type B RCD complying with BS EN 62423 shall be installed.”

The revised standard IEC61851-1 2017 removes this ambiguity and the associated risk with the inclusion of the following: “Where the EV supply equipment is equipped with a socket-outlet or vehicle connector for AC use in accordance with IEC 62196 (all parts), protective measures against DC fault current shall be taken.

“The basic hazards associated with the use of damaged or faulty electrical equipment can be easily be overlooked.”

“The appropriate measures shall be: RCD Type B or RCD Type A and appropriate equipment that ensures the disconnection of the supply in case of DC fault current above 6 mA.” There are a number of technical solutions that can be considered to achieve this requirement, one of these being the AEV RCD recommended and specified by Tesla. Doepke Technical Publication 06 explains the reasons behind this important safety revision and Type AEV RCDs incorporating this new requirement.

T

he increasing awareness of energy efficiency and lowering the carbon footprint has made building management systems (BMS) more attractive than ever. With research suggesting the BMS market will reach $19.25 million by 2023, it’s even more of an opportunity for electrical contractors to capitalise.

Installed anywhere from hospitals, offices and prisons to shopping centres, data centres and high-end residential, BMS systems are widely used to control and monitor a building’s electrical and mechanical equipment. The range of BMS systems available on the market is extensive, with options from manufacturers such as Trend, Honeywell and KNX. Offering a favourable choice for designers, specifiers, installers and end-users, KNX is a flexible, userfriendly and energy efficient BMS system.

But despite the complex technologies it controls, the KNX cabling is relatively simple – connecting devices and systems using one or two twisted pairs. The KNX cable from FS Cables has been tested and certified by the KNX Association as being suitable for use on its systems, as well as being tested in the UK for CPR compliance.

Most modern buildings now incorporate some form of BMS, focusing primarily on energy efficiency and saving costs. Whether that’s through proximity sensor lighting, climate control, door entry or security, they all work to achieve the same goal.

Efficient lighting control in a BMS system is just one way of reducing energy and saving costs for building owners. Using BMS, lighting can be automatically adjusted, depending on natural light detected or amount of people in the building. Aside from the safety aspect, it has also been claimed that BMS systems can increase productivity and performance.

Heating, cooling and ventilation can be automatically controlled or manually adjusted using an interface to set the optimum climate. Control cables, in particular the Niltox LF-319 and its dual screened sister cable Niltox LF-329, are used to provide power and control to heating and ventilation control systems.

Available in a range of conductor sizes and in either number of colour codes, from two to 25 cores, the Niltox LF-319 and LF-329 feature a LSHF sheath for installation in public buildings.
