is "Rusty Robots" - which, appropriately, slowly struggling to start up, a sound that serves as the foundation of the track before the injection of a melodic chorus. It's a wild ride that displays the full range of the band.
AW: “Rusty Robots” came in two pieces. The
poem and the music. Two distinct pieces. And I think that they could live without each other, but they don't dare because they're married. [Laughs] The music came first because the guys had sent me a whole bunch of different ideas. And the music they sent that became "Rusty Robots" was actually called “Rusty Robots” from the very beginning. But they had made it sound as crazy as they could. They just wanted to show what it would be like if something was all rusty and it was trying to shake itself awake. And it worked perfectly with the words I had already written about walking in the rain and talking to a rain shower and having the rain shower talk back. Yeah, it worked out great. I like that song. Album closer "Miss One & Only" is a beautiful
song featuring the sort of vocal performance we
rarely hear in music these days - pure singing, up close, with no effects. What was the inspiration for the lines "Far and away, the stars are
glistening / And in my soul I'm always listening to your whispers in the wind"?
AW: The “Far and away…” part came because the song was really telling me and us that it
wanted to go someplace else, and it had already been a couple of different places, but I know from experience that you listen to the song, and you listen to what it's telling you. And it will lead the way. So, that's what we did with “Miss One & Only.” For tickets and more info, visit oldnationaleventsplaza.com. The ONEP is located at 715 Locust St. in downtown Evansville.

AS GOOD AS IT GETS REGIONAL POP-PUNK DUO MAKES QUICK
I
RETURN WITH THE SOME FANTASTIC EP t was just a little more than six months ago that longtime friends Dustin J. Mattingly and Mike White - collectively known as the pop-punk duo As Good As It Gets -
dropped the excellent full-length Left to Our Own Devices. Now they're back with another slice, albeit slightly smaller, of musical goodness in the form of Some Fantastic, an equally accomplished 5-track EP (plus a bonus acoustic track). But the guys weren't just busy writing and recording new material in the interim; no, Mattingly and White also found time to revisit songs from their previous band, Thank You Jade, resulting in two summer projects - The Spirit of the Staircase - Acoustic Version and Revisionist History - which saw release in June and August, respectively. Mixed and mastered by local celebrity chef and musician Jeremiah Galey, Some Fantastic picks up where Left to Our Own Devices left off, comprising infectious tunes packed with melodic hooks that make for a mighty power-pop wallop. Tracks like "Keep the Lights On" and "Pushing Papers" land somewhere in between Blink-182 and Ben Folds with inventive chord changes and arrangements that lean heavily on the latter. Then there's "Doom is Something in Your Head" which chugs right along like a Green Day/Eve 6 hybrid, rocking a simple yet powerful distorted guitar progression. Paradoxically, the EP's best moment may be "The Worst," a lament of past mistakes featuring insightful lyrics - wise words that come even more to the fore on the bonus acoustic version. The official closer, "Are We the Stars," gives a serious nod to fun., emerging as a yearning anthem for the loss of youth. Some Fantastic is available on major streaming platforms.

Georgia Funkadelic
WITH AN EXPANDED LINEUP, EVANSVILLE'S GROOVE MASTERS GO TO TOWN ON FLAMBOYANCE
S
afe to say that Georgia Funkadelic boasts one of the more intriguing evolutions in the Evansville music scene. With three distinct phases of funk, it's been quite the journey
for the band's brainchild and groove-centric bassist, Matthew Frankic. The project grew out of a difficult period in his life as a means to channel his energy in a more positive direction - a goal he achieved via Georgia's Pool Party, a 2020 collaboration with musician friends featuring a mix of rump-shaking instrumentals and tracks with Frankic on the mic. That was followed a year later by the extended celebration of Georgia's After Party. Initially intended to be a hip-hop showcase for area MCs, it metamorphosed into an EP of funky jams between Frankic, guitarist Mickey Peaches, keyboardist Roy Micah and drummer Ben Ganster. Phase 3 saw Georgia Funkadelic expand into a six-piece, drafting in vocalists Lindsey Pickens and Cher'Rita Horne and guitarist Lucas Pate in place of Peaches. Perhaps most importantly, Frankic took on the persona of "Frank Money" - fitting, as his bass work has always been, you know, money. The newly assembled sextet began playing local gigs at various events before contacting Steve Tyner at Black Cat Recording this year to book sessions for an EP with an absolutely spot-on title: Flamboyance. Just released, the four-track collection truly flourishes thanks to the one-two vocal punch of Pickens and Horne, while the connection between the guys is glaringly obvious as they lock-in like musical soulmates from note one. In need of the funk? Flamboyance is your one-stop shop. Flamboyance is available on major streaming platforms. For more info, follow Georgia Funkadelic on Facebook.

The only weak spots here are tracks like “Put you Down” and “Real Thing” that feel like holdovers from when the band was playing clubs and trying to fashion their identity - they seem out of place on the record. Regardless, this album is as close to a masterpiece as a young band can get, and I find myself going back to Facelift more often than the more commercial albums that came afterward. ith so much turmoil in the world at the moment, we could all use a good laugh. Thankfully, comedian Danny Browning understands this.
The touring professional and owner of Laughing Dad Entertainment has made it a point to bring top-notch comedy to the tri-state, booking shows with local, regional and national talent at places like Jennings Street Public House in Newburgh - which just happens to be the site of his latest brainstorm: Tri-State's Funniest Person Amateur Comedy Contest. Over the last month and a half, 40 area comedians battled it out over the course of four rounds, judged on stage presence, creativity, and audience response. Those who advanced from each semi-round will now compete for the title of "Tri-State's Funniest Person" on November 9 - that list of performers includes Kenley McClure, Andy Russell, Paul Bragin, Jimmy Lee, Miss Molly, Curtis Crow, Nathan Alexander, Tanner Newcomb and more. The winner of "Tri-State's Funniest Person" will receive prize money, a paid spot during a professional weekend show and, of course, bragging rights as the area's top joke-maker. Suffice it to say that the joke's on you if you don't hightail it over to Jennings Street Public House for the big finale! For more info, visit laughingdadent.com. NEWS4U NOVEMBER 2023 | BOOK REVIEW
EVIDENCE OF THE AFFAIR by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Taylor Jenkins Reid has been a very popular author on BookTok over the last year or so, and this was my first read of anything she has written - and I’m glad I read it. Evidence of the Affair is in letter format between Carrie and David, both married to other people. How they meet is for you to find out when you read this short, heartbreaking, exhilarating story. The ending of the book is what really got me. Of course, I won’t spoil it. The letters exchanged between Carrie and David never eluded to how the ending would be - either that, or I’m terrible with context clues - but I do remember audibly gasping. This book shows that cheating can be more than just physical. Emotional affairs are very real, as evidenced by this book, and can hurt just as much. It also shows the complexity of affairs and the turmoil one can cause on the end of the person being cheated on. As someone who has personally been through this experience (not in a marriage), I related to it more than I’d liked. Reid’s capability of describing situations within the book made me feel immersed in the relationships, making it feel that I was involved in it somehow. I believe the letter format assisted in that feeling. Evidence of the Affair is a book that I think of often. Books that linger with you long after you’ve read them are ones that are special to me, and why I highly recommend this one. - Karah Wilson

TRUE CRIME JUNKIE WITH JOHNNY FLETCHER
THE DELPHI MURDERS: AN UPDATE Just over a year ago, an arrest was finally made in one of the most talked-about cases in Indiana's history. The murders of 13-year-old Abigail Williams and 14-yearold Liberty German in the town of Delphi had gone unsolved since 2017, frustrating the victims' families who demanded justice for such a brazen crime committed in broad daylight. Then, on October 31, 2022, authorities, offering few details, held a press conference to announce that 50-year-old community member Richard Allen had been taken into custody. It was later noted that a shell casing discovered at the crime scene was linked to a gun in Allen's home and that he had confessed to his wife multiple times during a phone call from jail. At the time, it seemed like pretty damning evidence of his guilt; yet, questions remained. What made this case particularly intriguing is that video of the suspect was captured on German's phone as he approached the girls while they were out hiking on the Monon High Bridge. As he shuffles towards them, he's heard to utter a command: "Down the hill." Unfortunately, it's difficult to determine with certainty if the individual in question is Richard Allen - though the stature and general features appear similar. At the very least, it was another piece of circumstantial evidence pointing in his direction. We would later learn that Allen had been interviewed at the beginning of the investigation and placed himself in the area on the day of the crime, but somehow authorities failed to follow-up for five years. Needless to say the Delphi police department has come under a lot of fire since his seemingly belated arrest. But just when you thought this case might be heading towards a resolution, the defense has thrown a huge monkey wrench into the proceedings, claiming that,

based on the crime scene and other information gathered, the murders were committed by Odinists (members of a Northern European-based religious movement) as a "ritualistic" sacrifice. Furthermore, Allen's defense team maintains that his multiple confessions were a result of mental stress and pressure from correction officers reportedly wearing badges signifying Odinism. Sounds crazy, right? Well, some people are buying into this new theory - especially since the case against Allen is, admittedly, thin. The actual memorandum from the defense is 136 pages long so there's too much to unpack here; we'll just have to wait

Meet Dotti Dotti is a pitbull mix about 7-months-old and weighing in at 50 pounds. She had a rough start to life as she and her momma were captured as strays - both filthy and with a terrible skin condition. Dotti was terrified of human affection and would only army crawl when someone got her out of her kennel. Thankfully, ACA was able to arrange for Dotti to go to a foster home where she has truly blossomed, overcoming her health issues and fear of people. In fact, she's all healed up and very affectionate. Dotti loves attention, gets along with cats and other dogs and shows zero aggression with toys or food. She wouldn't hurt a flea. Dotti willingly gets in her kennel - which she keeps clean most of the time - when commanded. At bedtime, she cries for a few minutes but then settles in for the night. Dotti needs a loving forever family that can help her learn some basic manners as she simply survived living on the streets. Her adoption fee is $150. She’s up-to-date on vaccines, spayed, microchipped and has been heartworm tested. She’s currently available through Another Chance for Animals. If you are interested in meeting Dotti, contact ACA. The dog, the myth, the legend: Spud. You may remember him from a previous News 4U article when he was up for adoption. When he first arrived at the VHS in 2021, he was heartworm-positive and severely overweight from an unchecked thyroid condition. His heartworms were treated and his medical condition easily treated. And thanks to the dedication of VHS volunteer James, Spud even got his figure back! He was finally adopted, but things didn’t work out (through no fault of his own) and he was returned to the shelter. Spud had not been kept on his thyroid medication and had gained all the weight back and then some. Here’s where Spud’s story turns into one of resiliency. Reunited and more determined than ever, James and Spud walked, ran and swam every day until he reached his weight goal - nearly a 50+ pound weight loss! Now a Super Spud, everyone was ready for his big day to come. In the summer of 2023 it finally happened and Spud is now living his best life in his very own home! NEWLIFE RESCUE & ADOPTION
Meet Lu Lu was found on 8/31/23 walking around very slowly in rural Posey County. Animal control was called and the caller described him as a dog who had been hit by a car probably due to his walk and the fact that he was so sick he was barely standing. AC took him to Newlife's vet and Kelli Alldredge of New Life got involved to look into a foster situation. Worryingly, the vet discovered that Lu was eaten up with infection from some kind of trauma to his face. Pus was flowing from his nose and

inside his mouth. At first the vet thought Lu had a cleft palate due to the shape of the opening and the hole in his palate. Questions remained if this disfigurement was some type of injury. After his first round of antibiotics and other medication, Lu was back at the vet for a check-up on his progress. To everyone's delight, the injury was healing! It was not a cleft palate at all. Unfortunately, that meant it was an injury - but there's no explanation as to how or why it happened. Lu continued medication until a couple weeks ago and the hole in the roof of his mouth is closed! His lips are healing and the infection is gone! This guy has gone from a few days away from death to healthy in a couple months. He’s so appreciative of Newlife's help and such a joy to have around. He is so gentle and loving. It's impossible to imagine someone harming him on purpose but the focus is on Lu's progress and the knowledge that he will always be safe now.

Unfortunately, a neighbor was not too fond of Zeus and ended up shooting him in the face with a shotgun. Zeus had permanent damage to his sight and may have also suffered hearing damage due to the blow. He came in with scars all over his face from where the pellets entered. He very quickly became a favorite to all. Despite this, Zeus sat day after day waiting to find his furever family. We heard many times that he was “too big” or that his bark was "just so loud and scary." But staff knew the real truth. This gentle giant commonly hung out with office staff, went on walks with volunteers (one who took him swimming in the lake frequently), was gentle with kittens, and was even used during Critter Camp programs. Due to no fault of his own, he was brought to our shelter and spent many nights wishing that he would find his furever home. After 153 days of waiting, Zeus finally had the perfect family come in to adopt him! His new owners had lost their own dogs and never felt the right connection again until they saw Zeus.

Since I first stumbled upon Beer via her banger “Hurts Like Hell (feat. Offset)” four years ago, I knew she was a star. She writes and produces her own music, loves playing visually and creatively with her music videos, has a killer wardrobe and is drop-dead gorgeous. A handful of her videos have even racked up views exceeding 50 million. So with Silence Between Songs, she means business. Favorites include “Showed Me (How I Fell in Love with You),” “Dangerous,” “Spinnin,” “Reckless” and “Home to Another One.” Beer actually sent the album to idol Lana Del Rey before its release. Her VMA performance, a mash-up of “Attention,” “Paint the Town Red” and “Demons” with a slew of devilishly mesmerizing back-up dancers, was a true tour-de-force. She's a loud and proud hip-hop queen who delivers radio-hit after radio-hit. “Agora Hills” is a more mellow-trap beat against a dystopian disco mall music video; “Love Life” is the perfect sunset car-ride vibe with a breathy, sensual chorus; and “Balut” is a straight-up 90s chill rap. My favorite, though, is lead single “Paint The Town Red” - it’s probably yours, too. It's just one of those cultural phenomena songs that’s been turned into countless TikTok vids thanks to the dangerously honest lyrics and addictive hook. I'm here for it. It’s a songwriting triumph, full of vulnerability and an inside look into his inner-circle of friends and family. He collaborated with record producer Aaron Dessner (of The National) on nearly all of the 14 tracks and their teamwork certainly paid off. “Magical” makes you feel like you’re living a true fairytale: ”Silence is filled as time stands still/ Our thoughts in the open room/ Lay here until the sun distills/ It's light for the perfect view/ Now I'm with you.” Swoon. “Plastic Bag” is a folksy, indie mix; “Magical” is a cheery good morning delight”; “American Town” is a highenergy melody; while “Punchline” is an emotional dialogue with himself that is refreshingly honest and so beautiful. Fans of the legendary rock band Heart were, well, heartened to hear that sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson recently shared the stage for the first time since 2019 for a rendition of the 1977 classic "Barracuda," along with the promise of new music to come. Even more good news is that Ann's latest solo project, Another Door, is her best to date, building on last year's excellent Fierce Bliss. Where the latter was a bluesy affair at times that included several intriguing covers, the former is a more cohesive release featuring 11 tracks co-written by Ann, a focus that pays off in spades on standouts like "Rain of Hell" which ascends into the cosmos with a heavenly chord change during the dramatic chorus. Then there's the acoustic-driven, hopelessly romantic "Still" underscored by delicate violins as Ann makes a determined vow: "The devil can take me under... the angels fall asunder/ "I love you still." Doing a 180, "Rusty Robots" is a wild ride with offkilter rhythms, heavy guitars and even heavier lyrics: "Flowers all around me drowning in the mud/ Washing all the pedals and soaking all the blood." Still, it's the softer moments that really hit the mark on Another Door, such as album closer "Miss One and Only" with its Beatles-esque chord progressions and achingly up-front vocals - no effects needed, just pure singing from the heart. - Johnny Fletcher

OFF! FLSD EP Fat Possum Records Even while nearing the 70-year mark and continuing to battle diabetes, Keith Morris remains punk rock's greatest frontman. The vocalist's flawless résumé includes his time as the original singer for Black Flag as well as his ongoing membership in the Circle Jerks - yet Off!, Morris' off-shoot, so to speak, from the Jerks, may be his crowning achievement. Not convinced? You will be after downloading these four additional songs from the recording sessions for the band's 2022 masterpiece, Free LSD. With each track clocking in under two minutes, the EP races by in a delirious blur of first-class punk rock riffs backed by a locomotive-like rhythm section. Sure, there are a handful of other acts in the genre that, musically speaking, can mow 'em down like Off!, but none possess a singer who can knife their way through the melee with such ferocity and conviction. Case in point, when Morris informs you to "keep your mouth shut" on the track of the same name, there's no question as to whether you'll comply. I’m always amused when exuberant fans proclaim a new album to be “The best thing the band has ever done.” Let’s all just take a deep breath. The album has been available for 20 minutes. Maybe give the new record a few spins before proclaiming your favorite band’s new album is an instant classic. Such is the case with former Judas Priest guitarist K.K. Downing’s new album, The Sinner Rides Again. Just a few short hours after its release, some fans were already declaring it was better than anything Judas Priest had released in 30 years. Really? Let’s try to take an objective look at the new material. The Sinner is a heavy metal record. It checks all the boxes. Driving, chugging rhythms? Yep. Sinister harmonies and shrieking vocals? However, the lack of dynamics and few acoustic instruments homogenize this effort. It’s like 80s b-movie closing credits but in a good way; it’s lovely and I’ll listen to this when I don’t feel like listening to anything. NOVEMBER BEER REVIEWS
This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. GOOSE ISLAND CHRISTMAS IPA
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4
This pours a hazy burnt orange with an ample head. There are earthy, piney aromas on the nose. On the palate it is medium-bodied, somewhat malty with a piney bitterness that balances it nicely. At 7.5% ABV, there is just enough warmth to complement a cool Christmas Day. This is a solid, well-balanced IPA.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4
A thick white head tops this IPA and takes a long time to evaporate. A decent amount of hops controls the scent profile. The hop flavors remain with the initial tasting and stay in the long finish, with wheat flavors adding some lightness. Drink this beer during the cold winter months at a holiday celebration. Pair it with your favorite holiday dishes as you gather with family and friends to celebrate the holidays.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4
This is a slightly cloudy, amber-colored beer. It has a decent amount of hops but it's not overwhelming or terribly bitter. This could make for a decent session beer around Christmas time but at 7.5% ABV, you may not be able to drink too many of these while watching football.
BRECKENRIDGE CHRISTMAS ALE
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4
This beer pours a rich caramel hue with a creamy off-white head. Slightly bready on the nose, with a rich maltiness on the palate along with a hint of clove. The hops balance with the malty sweetness perfectly, making this a very nice winter ale with a 7.1% ABV.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5
A thick white head crowns this winter warmer style ale and stays for a long time. Sweet malt scents come through the nose. Similarly, the sweet malt remains while drinking the beer, with some slight bitterness from the hops coming in the very long finish. People who like malty beers need to drink this seasonal offering during the winter in front of a roaring fire. Pair it with your favorite holiday foods like turkey and chocolate desserts.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5
This is a dark, amber-colored beer. I prefer this slightly over the Goose Island offering. The only thing missing in this Christmas beer is some nutmeg or gingerbread flavors. Otherwise, I find it easy to drink with a pleasant maltiness.

BELL'S OBERON ECLIPSE
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4
This citrusy, hoppy wheat beer pours a hazy orange with a thin head. On the nose is an abundance of citrus, mainly orange, joined by the typical wheat beer funkiness. On the palate it is slightly yeasty, with a hint of orange and the typical wheat beer flavors (esters) a fan of the style will love. This is a very well-balanced wheat ale that finishes with a bitterness an IPA drinker will appreciate as well.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4
A thick white head forms on this beer when poured into a wheat beer glass and never totally evaporates. The scent contains familiar notes of wheat along with coriander and orange. Likewise, the first sip of the beer contains wheat flavors as well as some generous orange notes. Wheat beer lovers definitely need to try this during the cold winter months. Pair it with a variety of cheeses like Stilton and aged Gouda, salmon or shellfish.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5
This is a cloudy, amber-colored beer. I find the sweet citrus flavor very refreshing as well as the crisp wheat flavor. Bell's always produces some of my favorite beers and they do good things with wheat. I also like the subtle coriander and solid 6.3% ABV.
TERRAPIN DEPTH PERCEPTION
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3
This Imperial IPA pours an almost clear amber with a nice white head. Notes of pineapple and other tropical fruits are prominent on the nose. This has a strong malty backbone with faint notes of pineapple and mango. This Imperial comes in at 9.1% ABV, and it doesn’t hide it. For me it's a little heavy - could have used a bit more hop bitterness to balance out the maltiness.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25
A decent white head rests on this IPA and dissipates slowly. A burst of hop scent fills the nose. Pine notes from the hops hit the tongue first and stay during
the long finish. People who enjoy hop-forward beers need to try this beer brewed with a trio of different hops. Pair it with strong dishes or spicy Asian foods like barbecue ribs, pork vindaloo, Thai Tom Yum or Korean Kimchi Jjigae.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5
This is another amber-colored beer with a slight cloudiness to it. I thought I was really going to enjoy this beer but it didn’t quite meet my expectations. It's a better-than-average Imperial IPA - pretty sweet with a bit of bitterness but overall, I prefer the other offerings this month.
PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

WITH LANE SIESKY / SIESKY LAW FIRM, PC
Focusing on personal injury, civil litigation, whistleblower claims and workers' compensation law, Siesky Law Firm strives to provide excellent legal services while remaining client and community centered. The Evansville-based trio of top attorneys - including Lane Siesky, Daniel Gearhart and Douglas Briody - boasts years of invaluable experience inside and outside the courtroom. Highly-respected with an impeccable track record, the firm's aggressive representation of its clients continues to benefit the community in myriad ways.
Q: It seems like the majority of legal cases don't go to trial or are settled quickly. Is that an accurate assessment?
A:
This is a great question. In the context of personal injury cases, it is true that most cases do not go to a jury trial. However, I would not say that cases are normally “settled quickly”. So, why aren’t more personal injury cases tried to a jury? There are many reasons. Often, if someone is badly injured the value of the personal injury case will exceed the insurance coverage available. Once all the available insurance proceeds have been obtained, having a jury trial is normally pointless because even if a jury returns a large verdict there is often no way to collect the money. In addition, many cases are too small to have a jury trial. Jury trials are very time-consuming and expensive for both sides. Each side often spends tens of thousands of dollars in experts,
court reporting for depositions, videographers, etc. So, in a smaller case neither side “wins” a jury trial because of the expense. Finally, in larger injury cases where there is adequate insurance to support a large verdict, the cases often settle at mediation. Mediation is an informal process where a mediator (neutral) goes back and forth between the parties and attempts to get the parties to reach a settlement. Most courts order the parties to mediate (sometimes more than one time) before allowing the case to be tried before a jury. Statistically, mediations are very, very successful in achieving settlement. Attorneys, mediators, and insurance adjusters may not always agree as to the exact value of a case but are professionals that work to bridge gaps and buyout risk.
Information is why cases do not settle quickly. Both sides need “information” in order to properly evaluate how much a case is worth and to gauge the chances of success should the case go to a jury. Important information includes evidence of the injured party’s medical condition, medical records and bills, witnesses, facts, surveillance video, company records, 911 calls, etc. This information is gathered through HIPPA authorizations, private investigators, subpoenas, written discovery, depositions and so forth. As you might imagine, all of the information collection takes time. If you have questions about an injury case, trial, settlement or the merits of a case, you will want to connect with a knowledgeable attorney and discuss your situation.
