Monster Jam 2013 @ The Ford Center

What does a monster truck named Samson have in common with a registered nurse? The driver. Her name is Allison Patrick. This Christmas, her dad Dan Patrick, finally handed her the title to the muscular 3D truck he s driven for twenty-five years. She gladly accepted and will make her debut in our very own Ford Center at the upcoming Monster Jam event. So what drives Allison Patrick?

A

drenaline! During her interview, Allison says, “I love nursing, but something about the truck keeps pulling me back in.” Apparently when you strap into the cockpit and put the pedal to the metal in a 12-foot-tall, 10,000 pound, 1500 horse-power beast of a truck, there’s a rush of excitement that working in the Intensive Care Unit just can’t match. For most of us, the Intensive Care Unit would do just fine. So there’s gotta be something else... Heritage! Allison points out that in 2012, the Grave Digger truck celebrated its 30 year anniversary, and its driver Dennis Anderson, now shares the spotlight with his sons and her very good friends, Ryan and Adam. When you grow up with something, it becomes a part of you. As Monster Jam drivers slowly start to turn the keys over to the next generation, the sport itself becomes a bigger family. Of course, Allison is right... Monster Jam is nothing without the family atmosphere! This year’s event features USHRA Monster Trucks Get Er Done, Robo Machine, Bad News Travels Fast, Stomper, Evansville’s own Quadzilla, and our buddy, Samson. During the Race event, you’ll see, hear and feel these larger-than-life leviathans roar around the track as they go head-to-head in a series of heats ending with a showdown between the two fastest trucks. The Pit Party is the ultimate tail-gating experience where you get up close and personal with the behemoth trucks and their pilots. Very few sports offer an opportunity to meet the down-to-earth people behind the highflying spectacle. No driver leaves until the last autograph is signed! If only every sport would guarantee ‘no disappointment’ to their fans! These supernatural trucks can do 0-60 in 3 seconds, they can leap 35 feet in the air and fly over 120 feet in a single bound! If you’ve never seen a monster truck do a wheelie, you’ve never lived. —Ben Clark

"You Write the Rules" World Tour with "Buckets" Blakes

W

ith a history stretching back to 1926, the Harlem Globetrotters basketball franchise is an international phenomenon. A staggering 20,000 games into their remarkable career, the team continues to entertain both the young and old from one corner of the world to the other with an inspiring on-court display of athletic and comedic skills. The Globetrotters’ off-court performances are even more legendary. As ambassadors of goodwill, they spend countless hours visiting children in hospitals and schools, always leaving smiles in their wake. Fresh off one of their most successful years ever, the Harlem Globetrotters return to Evansville January 22nd at the Ford Center. Veteran team member, ‘Buckets’ Blakes, spoke with News4U about their enduring popularity.

News4U (N4U): The North American tour begins the day after Christmas. Where have the Globetrotters been recently? ‘Buckets’ Blakes (BB): We just returned from entertaining the troops. We visited Afghanistan, Qatar and Bahrain. Also, we played in China this summer, and then we played in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Oman. N4U: What sort of reaction do you receive on these international

tours? BB: Oh, it’s out of this world. In China, we put on several small exhibitions with just three players as a preview for the main show, and we had 3,000 people at each one. That’s just one example of our popularity.

N4U: Speaking of, the Globetrotters’ popularity really seemed to take

off in the 60’s and 70’s with charismatic players like ‘Meadowlark’ Lemon and ‘Curly’ Neal – there were even cartoons. What do you think sparked this up-surge in interest that carries on through today? BB: I think the television coverage really made the difference. The Globetrotters were introducing basketball to places around the world without running water or electricity. Once people saw what we were about, we became big in the U.S. and then around the world. But definitely, those players you mentioned really set the tone for who we are and what we are today.

could be a Globetrotter. We’re looking for a great athlete obviously, but the most significant thing is character. You have to buy into the Globetrotter philosophy. You must be capable of conducting yourself well even when you’re not in uniform – and especially be able to perform when all signs point to failure.

N4U: What was the biggest factor in making last year such a success? BB: We’ve been doing more high-profile appearances – television shows like Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?, The Bachelorette and Hell’s Kitchen. We were just featured on CNN Headline News. I think our name is out there, and that has helped to build our brand. N4U: What’s the best part about being a Globetrotter? BB: Without a doubt, it’s visiting kids at places like St. Jude’s Hospital. It brings you back to down to earth and makes you put things in perspective. You can’t experience moments like that on any other team. —Thomas Ellis

Visit www.thefordcenter.com for ticket information. The game starts at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m.

N4U: What type of player does it take to become a Globetrotter? BB: It’s tough to make it. There are a lot of guys on our squad that could play in the NBA, but there aren’t many NBA players that Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • January 2013

at The Centre Charlotte 's Web, a loving tale of friendship and courage written by E.B. White in 1952, will be performed live at The Centre right here in Evansville.

T

ickets for this stunning tale of the friendship between a pig named Wilbur, and a small grey spider named Charlotte are the most sought after tickets available in the area, and no wonder. Who doesn’t like a pig? Wilbur the pig was raised as a family pet but soon discovers that the family is planning a dim future for him. The audience can’t help but sympathize. First of all, no other animal in the barn wants to be his friend because he had been treated so specially by the family. Then the family turns on him. Poor Wilbur. To save his life, Charlotte must help him become more valuable to the family than by just being a pet. Charlotte’s vibrant and voluminous vocabulary, along with Wilbur’s dancing talents, become indispensible. Charlotte plans to trick Farmer Zuckerman into thinking Wilbur is an irresistible miracle pig. —Nicole Thompson (New Tech Institute)

Lonely and scared, Wilbur the pig comes to live in the barn with the other animals who want nothing to do with him. After watching Wilbur suffer, Charlotte talks to him and says that she will be his friend. Charlotte goes above and beyond being a friend. In a way, she becomes Wilbur’s mother figure since he was separated from the little girl who raised him. Charlotte clearly lets the audience know that no one messes with her or anyone she cares about because she will show them who is boss, and clearly it is not them. My guess is that her character will be everybody’s favorite. —Caitlin Plumlee (New Tech Institute)

Do you want a friend, Wilbur? I’ll be a friend to you. I’ve watched you all day and I like you.” —Charlotte A. Cavatica in Charlotte’s Web

Even though I am now in high school, Charlotte’s Web is still one of my favorite books. As many times as I have read it, Charlotte is still my favorite character because she stands her ground, knows what she wants and is determined to get it no matter what it is. Shows are approximately one-hour in length. Tickets cost $6.00 a person, for more information or special offers call Centre Box Office at (812)-435-5770 or email: centreboxoffice@gmail.com. You can also purchase tickets using Ticketmaster at the Ticketmaster outlet in the Wal-Mart west location or call 1-800-745-3000 or if you’re interested in the 9:00am showing visit the Ticketmaster website at www.ticketmaster.com. COOKING SPOTLIGHT

Vecchio’s Italian Market

N

estled along downtown Newburgh’s row of sidewalk shops and eateries on Jennings Street, far from the commercial buzz of the Lloyd Expressway, sits Vecchio’s Italian Market. It’s the ideal spot for what original owner, Frank Spadavecchio envisioned as a “small imported goods store that made a little bread and sold a few sandwiches.” So ideal, in fact, that from the moment the doors opened in 2009, the market established a niche in the Newburgh community and prospered. By the time current owner, Amanda Hancock, took over six months ago Vecchio’s had expanded both its customer base and square footage. “I joined the team two months after the market opened,” says Hancock. “I was a culinary student at Ivy Tech, and one of my professors heard about an opening here and thought I would be perfect. When Frank decided to sell it, he talked to me and it just seemed like the natural progression of things for me to take over. I didn’t want anything to change. I think it’s perfect just the way it is.” It seems like kismet that an Italian market now stands where a grocery store once stood back in the 1920’s. The synergy at work is apparent as soon as you step inside. Shelves full of imported Italian pastas, olive oils, tomatoes, vinegars, tinned seafood, specialty sweets and so much more greet you. Just past these delicacies, a deli case stocked with Boar’s Head meats and cheeses awaits. But Vecchio’s is hardly just a high-end grocery store. While the specialty items on the shelves and in the deli case do a swift business, the market is best known for its prepared foods – mainly catering and daily lunches. “We keep everything fresh and feature different lunch specials every day,” explains Hancock. “It depends on what I feel like making when I come in that morning. Once we sell out, that’s it. That way you know you’re not getting yesterday’s leftovers.” Examples of these ultra-fresh creations include gourmet sandwiches both hot and cold, pizzas and Stromboli (the real deal – the pizza dough is filled with mozzarella, pepperoni, sweet Italian sausage, ground beef and homemade sauce). Demand is such that people often call in ahead.

Every Friday night, Vecchio’s offers dinner by reservation only. The menu is posted on-line via the market newsletter and includes an appetizer, salad, entrée, bread, dessert and bottle of wine – all for $45 per couple. Just like the daily lunch specials, the Friday dinners frequently sell out. Even so, the biggest day of the week by far is Saturday. “We make lots of extra food and fresh breads – Cuban water bread, French baguette, garlic cheddar round, garlic knots, etc.,” explains Hancock. To help wash down all the delicious breads, Vecchio’s sells a number of small, brewery craft beers and wines with a focus on old vine Italian, Spanish and French. Plans to build a mini-bar and increase the front area seating capacity to 25 should transform the market into a cool, after-work hang-out. With a perfect location, unique menu and specialty items, it’s no wonder Vecchio’s Italian Market created an immediate buzz that keeps growing. “We really don’t do any advertising,” says Hancock. “It’s practically all word of mouth. It’s great to know that people are out there talking about us.” —Thomas Ellis

What’ ' s Cookin’‘ H

House of Como

• 2700 South Kentucky Avenue Evansville, IN 812-422-0572

ouse of Como is truly one of Evansville’s best kept culinary secrets. It is a restaurant that garners little attention but remains a cornerstone in the Evansville dining scene. “[House of Como] is the first time an ethic restaurant has succeeded besides the oriental food market, and this has been here a long time,” said Martha Hage, owner of House of Como. For the folks who are unaware of this Evansville staple, they are missing out on some of the most unique, tasty food this city has to offer. House of Como was started in 1969 by Martha Hage’s late husband George. He implemented Lebanese family recipes as the restaurant’s flagship dishes and surrounded those dishes with other more familiar fare such as massive, juicy steaks, hearty lasagna and butter chicken. As eclectic as the restaurant may appear from the outside, nestled alone against I-164 with its ever present Christmas decorations adorning its grey, nondescript square structure, tradition is the name of the game in this house. “[The food] is good. It’s the same every time you come in. Consistency,” said Hage. That tradition is definitely felt stepping inside the House of Como as well. I noticed the age of the interior but I could literally feel the memories and history seeping out of the walls of the restaurant. To me, it seemed like I was in the cozy, finished basement of a beloved relative’s house, prepared with the utmost love and care for a holiday gathering. If those walls could talk, the stories would entertain to no end. My very first House of Como culinary experience began with Yebra Malfoof, or rolled cabbage leaves with beef and rice on the inside. The tomato sauce ladled over the rolls brings a wonderful tang to the savory beef’s mild spice that sits so pleasantly and lightly

on the tongue. The texture is similar, balanced and very accessible. It is an excellent dish to warm your spirits on a cold day. The second dish presented to me was the Arabian Salad with homemade flatbread. It is flavorful but relatively light. The flatbread adds a comfort food element, balancing perfectly with the tangy, slightly sour taste of the salad. A savory flavor is also present, headed up by a bold olive and vinegar presence. Instead of masking, the dressing frames the taste of the tomatoes, onions and green peppers in the salad. This gives each its own flavor profile. Then came the Djage, or baked chicken with Lebanese spices and pine nut stuffing on a bed of bits of beef and rice. The cinnamon in the blend of Lebanese spice is unleashed in this juicy, baked chicken. It makes for an aroma that is both exotic and comforting. The taste is a remarkable, unique mix of earthy, savory and sweet tones. The texture is tender and clean, perfectly countered by the crisp outer skin. Lastly, Baklava was served, a pastry-like dessert with a nutty, earthy sweetness. The dish contains two morsels of flaky, sweet but light goodness. “[After dining here] I want customers to feel satisfied that they ate some good food and to plan on when they would come back,” said Hage. —Nick Durcholz House of Como is located at 2700 South Kentucky Avenue in Evansville. hether filling the roll of the outsourced manager and caterer for the Ivy Room at SWIRCA, or catering to any number of other locations, chef Paul Hoskins and The Savant Gourmet Catering Company bring to the table a wide variety of specialties and

decades of experience. Hoskins started in the restaurant industry when he was 14, and he was already working in restaurant management by the age of 15. He started as the soda jerk in a family restaurant that had an old-fashioned ice cream and soda fountain. He became the head soda jerk and ran the department until he graduated from high school. Hoskins attended college at the University of Evansville where he studied communications

Ivy Room at SWIRCA 16 West Virginia Street, Evansville, IN 47710 (812) 464-7800 and English. He also did a study on ethnic, cultural, philosophical and culinary histories that played influence to his later culinary work. After college, Hoskins started out as a writer for an NBC affiliate in Nebraska. He also directed local community theatre there. Paul shares, “It seemed that no matter what else I was doing, food was always in the mix. I got back into restaurant management when I came back to Indiana.” In the 1970s, Paul worked at Funky’s. In the 1980’s, he worked at Good Time Bobby’s, and he then took over management of Funky’s 2 until he started the Savant Gourmet in 1992. The start of Savant Gourmet had Hoskins cooking comfort food and doing cocktail parties and in-home dinners. He also landed a gig as a private and corporate chef for a client with distinct English and northern European tastes. Hoskins describes the experience and his business beginnings as such, “I designed the Savant Gourmet originally to be a think tank operation. I would take really odd jobs and use them to teach myself. I was able to study a huge variety of ethnic cuisines and customs [including] Ayurvedic (eastern Indian, Hindu) from a Brahman.” Hoskins also read chemistry books to understand what was happening at a molecular level, studied how Indian chefs worked and also studied written material from the Kopan monastery in Katmandu to learn about Tibetan foods from the cook at the monastery. He has also networked with a hotel chef in Jamaica to exchange recipes and technique, a Hawaiian in St. Louis to study the tradition of Luau, a Moroccan, an Iranian, an Italian and multiple French chefs. Hoskins comments though, “I never lost touch with my roots of southern American and German American that were given to me by my mother and [by] my aunt who was a cook at St. James in Haubstadt. The result of all of this is that I am now a food geek, consumed with a passion for not just cooking food, but knowing why, how long ago, how [to], and by whom that food was originally cooked.” Meats such as steaks, chops, roasts, and ribs are a specialty of Hoskins. He has developed his own process for smoking meats, which involves outdoor cooking vs. kitchen preparation. He is a big fan of soups and stews and even has his own cookbook of soups and stews available through the Rotary Club, with proceeds going to the End Polio Now foundation. “Ultimately, food is about people, their history, their lives, their beliefs… What we find in studying many cuisines is that they were designed first by necessity, and later by style or preference. I like to learn about the necessity before I add the preferences, then share the scope of that experience with anyone interested,” says Hoskins. —Nikki Davis Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • January 2013

Lucky Joe 's @

Ellis Park

L

ucky Joe’s, a new restaurant open within the Ellis Park grounds offers a jackpot of Americana eats. The new restaurant is located at the heart of the gaming floor and offers classic American fare including burgers, hot dogs, fried chicken and hot pastrami sandwiches. Lucky Joe’s also serves up traditional breakfast dishes. The portions are above average and patrons get extra bang for their buck with menu prices in the $6 to $10 range. While the atmosphere mainly caters to the track going patrons, Lucky Joe’s has offerings for adults and menu items geared towards children. The restaurant does not neglect the health conscience either, offering tasty, healthier dishes to please those patrons. All of the previously mentioned food items are made fresh and never frozen. The restaurant is named after Joe Gerrity, and is a replica of the restaurant at Ellis Park’s new sister property Saratoga Casino & Raceway in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The restaurant is one new aspect, as Ellis Park recently went through a change of ownership. Overall, Ellis Park remains a mecca of entertainment. Stop to grab some fresh, quality eats at Lucky Joe’s and enjoy the rest of your day betting on horses live at the track or checking out Ellis Park’s new Instant Racing Gaming Machines that provide excitement when the weather outside is frightful. —Franklin Rogers

Luke Bryan: Dirt Road Diaries Tour Live at the Ford Center

Country music heart-throb, Luke Bryan brought down the house as the opening performer at the fan-voted American Country Awards on December 10th.

A

fter wowing the crowd with a high-energy romp through his current smash, “Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye,” Bryan barely had time to rest. He was called back to the stage a staggering nine times to collect a bevy of awards: Artist of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Single of the Year, Male Single of the Year, Music Video of the Year, Male Music Video of the Year, Most Played Radio Track and Male Most Played Radio Track. Clearly, the night belonged to Bryan - more accurately, the year. Country music fans are notoriously loyal. Once they latch on to a singer, they don’t often let go. Since his debut album, Stay with Me hit the charts in 2007, Bryan had been building just such a fan base; his popularity seemed set to explode. All he needed was the right album to light the fuse. 2009’s Doin’ My Thing fulfilled the promise of his debut with hits like “Do I” and a down-home take on One Republic’s “Apologize.” It also set the stage for Bryan’s career-making 2011 release, tailgates & tanlines. The fuse was lit. By the time 2012 arrived, Bryan’s life was turning upside down – in a good way. “Country Girl (Shake It for Me),” the lead single off the new album, rose to the top of the country charts with lightning speed. Coupled with his Hollywood looks, the success of that song placed Bryan in the elite company of megastars like Blake Shelton and Tim McGraw. More hits followed. “I Don’t Want This Night to End” and “Drunk on You” both reached number one, solidifying Bryan’s new stature. Not long after, sales of the album surpassed one million copies, a rare feat in today’s music industry. Considering the overwhelming chart success of tailgates & tanlines, Bryan might easily have coasted the rest of the year. Instead, he took the music to the people, touring relentlessly. He feels completely at home and at peace on the road. Watching Bryan command the stage during his American Country Awards performance, it’s easy to see why. Now, after a brief break in the action, he is once again ready to visit his fans all over the U.S. – starting right here in Evansville.

Dubbed the “Dirt Road Diaries Tour,” Bryan’s latest trek across the country kicks off at the Ford Center on January 17. It promises to be his most ambitious outing yet; close to 50 dates up through August 2013 are scheduled at some of the country’s biggest venues. As an added bonus, Bryan is bringing along country stars-in-the-making Thompson Square and Florida Georgia Line to warm up the crowds. —Thomas Ellis

Certain to impress and delight classical music lovers in the community, Mostly Mozart offers yet another opportunity to experience a uniquely talented orchestra. The Evansville Philharmonic is widely recognized and respected across the country with a long history dating back to 1934. Many of the 80 professional musicians that make up the orchestra call Evansville home and have attended nationally lauded music programs at the University of Evansville and Indiana University. The Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra is a non-profit organization and considered the largest arts institution in the region.

t’s no secret that Americans are crazy about their pets. Every year, we spend a small fortune on their care and upkeep, treating them better than most of our friends and family members. But when you consider the unconditional love and companionship that a pet provides, it’s not hard to understand why. While dogs and cats are the perennial, most popular pets in America, there are so many other interesting possibilities. For anyone wanting to take a more unconventional approach, the upcoming Kentucky Reptile Expo (KRE) is definitely for you. The Centre in downtown Evansville will host the event on Saturday, January 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Featuring captive bred reptiles and supplies from some of the top breeders in the country, the show is an excellent opportunity to see fascinating reptiles, amphibians, spiders, insects and more. Experts will be on hand to discuss and give advice on the proper care of these exotic pets. Best of all, almost all of the animals and products are offered at wholesale prices, up to 50% cheaper than in stores. 2012’s edition of the KRE in Evansville was a great success, and all signs point to another fantastic event. In fact, the organizers intend to bring the show here on a regular basis throughout 2013.

localtalent Heather Landry

T

he sweet smell of freshly-brewed chai tea tickles your nose and the Beatles sweetly welcome customers into a local coffee shop. In walks the Resident Artist, Heather Landry. Her t-shirt boasts the Art Council of Doom’s logo and her hair shines with five different shades of vibrant color as she begins to carefully remove art work from the wall. “This took 12-14 hours to do,” she smiles as she brushes some blue streaks away from her face. “My grandma did it. It was a present to myself when I became a stay-at-home mom. The most important thing to me is my family. No matter what I do, I ultimately know they are proud of me,” says Landry. Besides the hair that could be a work of art itself and raising two small children, Landry has also been involved in several different art shows, runs and manages her own website www.sandpaperdaisy.com. She even completed a comic book recently. Landry grew up in Evansville and has always been passionate about art. “Ever since I could hold objects, I knew that I wanted to create. I have known my whole life that this is what I am supposed to do,” Landry says. She attended the University of Southern Indiana. “I have a Bachelors of Fine Art with a minor in Art History. Because the tuition was so reasonable at that time, I was able to go to Mexico and England and do

a lot of other really interesting things while I was completing my education. I am forever grateful for the experience and the educators I had during that time,” explains Landry. Perhaps what makes her art so unique is the combination of traditional techniques and technology. “Being able to use technology to create art is fantastic. I think that being traditionally-trained is also very important, and having both tools in my box only allows me more freedom to create. To master both techniques can only make any artist better. That is how you progress as an artist. The next piece should always better be better than the last,” Landry advises. Being in a the position of Resident Artist allows Landry to work with other artists and maintain a cool, creative environment for the coffee shop. She creates her pieces at home while listening to Tool or Led Zeppelin, utilizing kitchen counter tops and any space that is kid-free to finish her pieces. Like most artists, Landry is inspired most by the people that surround her. “I get most of my inspiration while lying next to my sleeping husband. I will hear him breathe and an image or my next project will pop in my head. The grunt work takes 3 days to a month depending on the details of the piece. I keep a notebook next to my bed just in case I have to wait,” says Landry. Besides showcasing her own art at a local coffee shop, Landry is also very excited about working with other artists and looks forward to the open communication between the Art Council of Doom and the Art Council of Southern Indiana. Landry exclaims, “I truly believe that together, there is nothing we can’t do. As for me, I see myself quietly slaving away on my comic books. I honestly have never been happier.” —Brooklyn Solis

soundboard Gentlemen and Scholars

A

band’s name does not always reflect upon the individual members, but in the case of Evansville’s Gentlemen and Scholars (G&S), it fits like a glove. But don’t be fooled; their music is often just as heavy as it is sophisticated. Over the course of two albums and an EP, the band’s sound has evolved from a conceptual, polished free-for-all to a stream-lined, raw, bluesy rock that is anything but gentlemanly. The core members of the band (guitarist/ keyboardist Patrick Brady and drummer Kyle Burchett) first met as young, uh, scholars and immediately bonded over a love of music passed down from their artistic parents. “Pat and I started drawing guitars together in fourth grade,” Burchett explains. “I asked him if he wanted to start a band with me. That day he quit taking piano lessons and started playing guitar.” About a year later, vocalist Jeremiah Galey was recruited, and apart from the occasional life interruption, their musical bond has lasted the duration. The current incarnation of G&S also includes guitarist Adam Noblett and bassist Shane Strickland who joined in 2008 and 2010, respectively. Unlike the majority of bands that shy away from the rigors of touring and self-promotion, G & S hit the road right out of high school, playing all over the U.S. from coast to coast. After writing and honing a seemingly schizophrenic collection of songs that veered from atmospheric piano pieces to raging punk/metal anthems, the band entered the studio

and recorded their debut album. A conceptual modern rock opus, The Record, the Keepsake, and the Thief was released in March of 2008 and garnered the band a slew of critical praise. They continued to tour off the back of the album, building an audience one fan at a time. “We would go to the local mall and spend hours walking up to random people and soliciting our music – asking kids if they would listen to our music and come to our show later. To this day, those fans are still the ones that have the deepest connection with us,” says Burchett. The constant slog of life on the road finally paid off when Torque/Victory records offered the band a deal in 2009. The resulting album, The Fault, received wide distribution. But strangely, the band never actually toured in support of it due to a lack of funding from the label and a general downturn in the concert business. After failing to capitalize on such a high profile release, the members had a collective re-think about their future and made the bold decision to go it alone. “It was a tough decision to make, because we always felt we were right there on the cusp of being successful enough to support ourselves,” explains Brady. Using Radiohead’s In Rainbows as a model, G&S released 2011’s self-produced Bad Apples EP as a pay-what-you-want download. Along with the new business approach, the music represented a shift from the all-over-the-map style of the first 2 albums to the more uniform, focused sound of raw rock. G&S heads into 2013 with a full agenda, including Thick as Mud, a new EP out March 19. A release party is scheduled for March 16 at Tin Man Brewery. “We’re building a brand. Our music is our art. As long as we continue to love what we’re doing, we’ll continue to push for it and strive until it’s not fun for us to do anymore,” says Brady. —Thomas Ellis Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • January 2013

Aloha Series Pipeline Porter

Bell’s Winter White Ale

I picked a good night to try this beer since we decided to have brats and kraut for dinner. I drank half of it and used the rest to cook the Meaty logs of this evening’s Germanic delicacy. The pour is a soft pale straw yellow color. It’s a decent domestic German styled lager, but a little light on the flavor.

Jabez Martinez • 3.5

This is a cloudy, pale, yellow beer. It had a fruity aroma which matched its flavor. The finish was a little hoppy but after having this Bell’s, this beer was somewhat similar but not as good.

Nick D • 4

This brew pours a very thin, faded amber color much lighter than the usual lager. The aroma is wonderful; the pungent barley is balanced with a scent of grapes, a slight smell reminiscent of a soft red wine. The texture is remarkably smooth as a lager should be and the taste is typical for the most part too. However, there is a tiny sweetness that adds some mystery. It finishes squeaky clean. Nothing eye opening, but this is a solid beer.

76 | January

This beer has a very dark pour with a red glimmer. This is a really good sipping beer when you feel like hanging loose as they say on the islands. The Hawaiian coffee adds a terrific flavor to this porter. It has a full coffee taste, not roasted, more mocha-like, Malty, and full.

Jabez Martinez • 4.5

This is a very dark beer with a light brown head. It had a strong coffee aroma with some roasted malts. It has a crisp coffee flavor and I really liked it because it was wellbalanced. Unlike some porter, Pipeline was very refreshing and didn’t seem very heavy. I have never had a Hawaiian beer and hope to see this beer stick around.

Nick D • 4.5

The beer pours a beautiful, deep brown much like other porters. Totally uncharacteristic of most porters is the rich, sultry scent of Hawaiian Kona coffee beans, punctuated by a slight chocolate aroma. The texture is velvety smooth, the commanding punch of the coffee beans works perfectly with the smooth texture for a completely balanced beer. Of course, if you are not a coffee fan, this one is not for you. If you are a fan, you have to give this one a shot.

2013 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

There is a pale milky golden hue to the pour. I was a bit worried when I saw the large amount of white sediment in the bottle but I guess it fits well with the wintery wonderland theme. The flavor is accented by a Taste of yeast, grassy wheat and a bit of clove, with a bold citrus presence throughout, the finish having a slightly bitter citrus peel bite.

Jabez Martinez • 4.5

This beer pours a golden yellow cloudy color with a little foam at the top. I could smell the typical wheat and citrus aroma as expected. It also had a smooth wheat and citrus flavor with a mild, malt taste. This is a beer I will be searching for tomorrow, and hope they have it in stock for a while since it appears to be a seasonal beer.

Nick D • 3.5

This winter brew pours a vibrant lemon hue that catches the light and magnifies it. The scent of this beer is very subtle overall. I noticed a slight fruit note along with a hint of seasonal spices and the alcohol but it is all toned down to a whisper. The texture of the Winter White is very smooth with a slight bite from the carbonation. The taste is much like the scent, the seasonal spices are dampened and the sweetness is muddled. A very accessible brew but wished more in flavor.

Bass IPA

IPAs but this is the first one I actually like. Most IPAs are too overdone for me, but I would consider this one on the lighter side. It did have the distinct hops flavor but wasn’t overbearing. Some IPAs that I have had coat your tongue with hops, this one did not.

Nick D • 4

Christy Moore • 3

This beer has a midas like golden tint. Very hoppy bite but it goes down really smooth. Lightly sweet, grainy malt flavors with soft grassy notes there is a significant citrus after taste, also a mild spicy burnt bread subtlety with a hint of walnuts

Jabez Martinez • 4

This beer had a deep, clear amber color with a mild hops aroma. I am not a big fan of

Bass’ new entry pours a vivid amberbrown hue, with a touch of orange. The hops scent in this beer doesn’t knock you out but it seems substantial enough to please IPA-lovers. The taste is interesting, it is not as bitter and striking as other IPAs but it maintains bold, hoppy character. The texture is much more manageable than nearly all other IPAs I have come across and it finishes without the harsh bite. This is a refined, carefully-crafted brew.

Random Beer Facts! •Hop was used as flavorings as early as 400 BC by captive Jews in Babylon, but historians think that the real reason it was used as additive was for its antiseptic properties. By adding hops, brewers didn’t have to have high alcohol content to prevent spoilage. This meant less grains and therefore more profit. •In the 11th century, Arnold of Soissons, a bishop in the Benedictine St. Medard’s Abbey in Soissons, France, began to brew beer. He encouraged the locals to drink beer instead of water for its health benefits (beer was healthier than water mainly because it was boiled and thus sterilized from pathogens). No wonder they made him a saint! •The first references to beer dates to as early as 6,000 BC. The very first recipe for beer is found on a 4,000-year-old Sumerian tablet containing the Hymn to Ninkasi, a prayer to the goddess of brewing. Compiled from www.beerfestboots.com

Gangster Squad Warner Bros. Hollywood, 1949. Bronx-boy, crime boss Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) climbs out of the gutters and threatens the turf in Tinseltown. A secret LAPD task force assembles to clean the streets. Their motto: No names. No badges. No mercy. The courageous squad members are Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men) as Sgt. John O’Mara, Ryan Gosling (Drive) as Sgt. Jerry Wooters, Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker) as Officer Coleman Harris, Giovanni Ribisi (Avatar) as Officer Conwell Keeler, Robert Patrick (Safe House) as Officer Max Kennard and Michael Peña (Shooter) as Officer Navidad Ramirez. Each member offers a special talent to bear against Cohen’s army. Gosling uses an extra talent though, when he chases after Mickey Cohen’s prostitute Grace Faraday, played by Emma Stone (The Amazing Spider-Man). Police chief “Whiskey Bill” Parker is played by Nick Nolte (48 Hrs.). Gangster Squad the motion picture was inspired by Paul Lieberman’s book Gangster Squad: Covert Cops, the Mob, and the Battle for Los Angeles. His book chronicles the true events of “The Sunset Wars” and is based on over ten years of research where he interviews some of the original charismatic members of the real Gangster Squad, who in their later years decided to be less secretive. Executive producers are Paul Lieberman and the film’s director, Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), as well as producer Bruce Berman (Goodfellas). Every generation wants (and needs?) a great gangster movie. There may not be a better recipe for an original mob story. The woman in the red dress is waiting at a theater near you - don’t forget to wear protection.

January 25 Parker

FilmDistrict A career criminal with no first name. A professional who says, “To get away clean, you have to play dirty.” A thief with a strict code of ethics. Parker. Jason Statham (Snatch) plays Parker, a cold, calculating man who doesn’t “steal from people who can’t afford it” or “hurt people who don’t deserve it.” Michael Chiklis (The Shield) plays Melander, a fellow thief who cuts Parker out of his latest share when he shoots him and leaves him for dead. Parker survives and rises full of vengeance. He disguises himself as a smoothtalkin’ Texan and sets his sites on Melander and the bounty of his next big score. Leslie, a convenient insider played by Jennifer Lopez (Enough), assists Parker with his revenge plot. Parker the motion picture is based on a character in a twenty-four volume book series written by the late Donald E. Westlake, who worked under the pseudonym, Richard Stark. In past film adaptations, Westlake strictly forbade usage of the name ‘Parker’ unless the studio agreed to make the film into a series, and for the remainder of Westlake’s life they never did. Minus the name, Parker’s character was played by the likes of Lee Marvin (Point Blank, 1967), Robert Duvall (The Outfit, 1973), Mel Gibson (Payback, 1999) and many more. During an interview, Quentin Tarantino mentioned that Stanley Kubrick’s The Killing (1956), which is also based on the Parker novels, was influential in his creation of Reservoir Dogs (1992). Director Taylor Hackford is probably best known for Ray (2004). There are big shoes to fill with this title. We shall see then what’s in a name. —Ben Clark

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World Universal/Focus Features

Steve Carell’s graduation to the big screen after playing the much-loved Michael Scott on The Office for many years seemed like a good career move. But while his movies have generally fared well at the box office, his character development has stalled. Carell’s latest film, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, won’t help matters. As Dodge, a heartbroken, middle-aged, recent bachelor going through life in a daze, Carell plays the same character portrayed in films like Dan in Real Life and Crazy, Stupid Love. But this time his misery is compounded by reports that an asteroid is heading towards Earth. Life will end in a few weeks. Friends literally live like they are dying, partying night and day, but Dodge just mopes. Naturally, this is the moment that neighbor Penny (Keira Knightley) enters the picture – through his living room window. A flaky, excessively jumpy pseudooptimist with hypersomnia, she bonds with Dodge over relationship woes and then promptly falls asleep. As a riot breaks out in the neighborhood, the two escape and hit the road. Thus begins the tedious process of Dodge and Penny ultimately realizing that they can’t live without each other – or wouldn’t be able to if not for the end of the world. Dodge initially seeks out an old flame but finds that his heart is now with Penny. She visits an old boyfriend but rebuffs his overtures. Tears flow as they drive around in search of meaning in their final moments and wind up at Dodge’s estranged father’s home. The final scene is too ridiculous for words.

Apparition

Warner Bros. Pictures Attempting to capitalize on the overwhelming success of the Paranormal Activity movies, Apparition mimics the ghostly horror of that series but fails to add anything new. Most disappointingly, there is entirely too much build-up with no actual pay-off. Young couple Ben (Sebastian Stan) and Kelly (Ashley Greene) move into a nice home in a relatively deserted subdivision and immediately sense something amiss. Doors open by themselves, furniture shifts and mold appears all over. Despite an apparent haunting at work, they try to laugh it off as a neighborhood practical joke. But the strange happenings only escalate. Kelly, growing ever more frightened, eventually discovers Ben’s secret: he once participated in a university para-psychology experiment that unleashed an entity now intent on destroying them both. After fleeing to a hotel where the entity immediately tracks them down and intensifies the haunting, Ben and Kelly contact Patrick (Tom Felton), a former fellow participant in the conjuring. He insists that reversing the university experiment process will save them. He is dead wrong. With Patrick now out of the picture, there is only one hope left for Ben and Kelly. But they are essentially D.O.A. as they enter Patrick’s home and head for the ‘safe room’ designed to ward off the entity. While no one approaches a horror movie expecting great acting or a sharp screenplay, a few genuinely frightening moments should be a given. Unfortunately, the scares never materialize in Apparition. Instead, it tries to squeak by with an ominous soundtrack and a lot of staring at empty walls and open doors.

Video Games

Far Cry 3

I

t is no secret that the video game market is saturated with first-person shooter games but Ubisoft has managed to elbow through the crowd with its vivid and eccentric offering: Far Cry 3. Far Cry 3 and both of its predecessors’ stories follow the same general formula. The gamer plays as a character trapped on a gorgeous tropical island that must thwart a local homicidal maniac. In Far Cry 3 the player inhabits a civilian, Jason Brody, who must become hardened and skilled to survive his new environment and the island’s resident sociopath Vaas. Each entry to the series has its own story and characters, giving the player a different plot experience each time. The gameplay of the series (including FC3) gives players open-world exploration, travel in various vehicles, stealthy and aggressive combat and elements of realism like snake bites, diseases and dynamic weather. The newest entry features hunting for indigenous creatures like dear, boar, tapir and wild dog. In addition to the excitement of the kill, the player also benefits from improving aim and obtaining animal skins for equipment and upgrades. The weapons feel and sound tremendously solid. They also boast their own upgrades with color and camouflage customizations. Even player movement is this game feels sturdy and realistic. As Brody learns new skills such as cooking grenades, cinematic silent takedowns and crafting intravenous formulas, a tattoo is added to his left arm. Each of these tattoos is a piece of a sleeve documenting Brody’s journey to become a true warrior. The action this game has to offer is uncanny. While exploring a river bed to find a plant to craft medication, a crocodile latched on to me suddenly and promptly initiated a death spin. In a blur of red, blue and bubbles, I hit the button to counter-attack successfully and plunged my knife into the croc’s head, ending the struggle. Far Cry 3 of the most thorough gaming experiences I’ve ever had. Despite a few a couple visual flaws, the game is both fun and satisfying. It is the true everyman’s shooter. —Mr. Farthington The ESRB has rated this game ‘M’ for Mature due to Blood & Gore, Intense Violence, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content and Use of Drugs.
