Depending on who you talk to, the “unofficial” start to summer is Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day weekend is when all the grill masters dust off their grills and bags of charcoal become as available to folks as ancient Sumerian texts on the art of grilling.

I

f Memorial Day Weekend is the deviled eggs of the menu of summer, then the 9th Annual Hadi Shrinersfest/2012 Evansville Freedom Festival is the day-long smoked, barbeque sauce slathered, rack of ribs (or t-bone steak, even veggie burger, if that’s your thing). Shrinersfest events begin Saturday, June 2nd and last through Sunday, June 10th. “Shrinersfest is more about celebrating summer. The end of school, the beginning of family vacations where they are looking for fun and affordable times to relax and enjoy what the area has to offer,” said Dale Thomas, a Shrinersfest coordinator. Thomas said more than a mouthful in one sentence. Both figuratively and literally. Shrinersfest begins on June 2nd with the BBQ contest. Festival-goers will be able to view and possibly sample fares from many entries vying for top prizes in each category. The contest consists of two categories: chicken and ribs. Thomas says that almost anyone can enter the actual contest and an entry form may be found at the Shrinersfest website, (www.hadishrinersfest.org) which will give rules and responsibilities. Another event happening on June 2nd is the 2012 Shrinersfest Bass Tournament which kicks off at 6:30 a.m. and

lasts until noon. Thomas says that anyone can sign up for the tournament up until 6 a.m. Again, an entry form can be found on at the Shrinersfest website. Participants will report to the Angel Mounds Boat Ramp. The cost is $80.00 per team and while anglers can catch whatever the water offers them, (and of course, pursuant to DNR guidelines) the only fish that count are largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass. Another popular event during Shrinersfest begins at 8 a.m. on June 2nd with the Rollin’ on the River Car and Bike Show. Thomas says the car show is expecting nearly 500 entries which include hot-rods, cars, bikes, trucks and antiques. The bike portion of the spectacle begins at 9 a.m. with a poker run starting at three different locations: The Pagoda at the riverfront, Bud’s Harley Davidson and Big 4 Cycle in Newburgh. The ride is approximately 80-100 miles with the finish being back at the Pagoda where all riders will have some lunch and have their bikes judged. Thomas said this of the bike judging: “There are prize categories for overall impression, front end, exhaust system, cleanliness and points given for paint job, engine, wheels, seats, chrome, lights and ‘special.’” The second round of kickoff events occurs on

Wednesday, June 6th with Kids Day. Thomas says local police, fire, and emergency personnel will be on display and the rides will be up and running. On Thursday, festival patrons (of a certain age, of course) can begin visiting the bierstubes at the Hadi Temple parking lot. The rest of the weekend bierstubes will be located at the Hadi parking lot as well as Casino Aztar. Thursday evening and continuing throughout the rest of the festival, several bands playing different stages will be performing. Some of the bands include: Scott Sublet & Tim Simpson, McFly, Lydsey Williams, Phreak and Jason Clutter. Another exciting event occurring Friday and Saturday is the 17th Annual Junior Achievement Grand Prix Race sponsored by Duke Energy. “We’re featuring high energy go-cart racing on Friday, June 8 and Saturday, June 9 as part of the Hadi Shrinersfest. This year’s ‘Race for Education’ will take place on the bricks of Main Street in between First Street and Riverside Drive,” said Thomas.

The excitement afterburners kick in Friday and Saturday with what Thomas says, is an extremely rare and exciting series of air shows. Some of the high-flying feats will be performed by The Red Steel Jet Team. The team features the world’s fastest privately owned jets. The MiG-23 Flogger and 3 L-39 Albatros, which are capable of supersonic speeds. Also performing will be the Geico Team featuring Tim Weber. Thomas had this to say of Weber’s unique show: “As a musician with a passion for the guitar Tim has incorporated this love of music into his air show routines by writing and performing original music for his performances. Tim’s aerobatics will astound you!” Other performers include Gary Ward in his 400 miles-per-hour MX2, Matt Youkin in a Twin Beech 18 and Keith Davis. Saturday afternoon will feature the Holly’s House Boat Parade which is slated for 4 p.m. The theme for this year’s parade is Pirates of the Caribbean and entries will be pirate-tizing their boats to compete for prizes. Shrinersfest is allowing ye land lubbers a chance to see the parade from a special view for $25.00. Music and drinks will also be provided for those brave enough! Shrinersfest begins to wind down Saturday evening. However, it doesn’t spare on the entertainment and excitement. Evansville Bellydance will take the stage at Casino Aztar to perform a completely ‘family-friendly’ show. The bellydance performance commences just prior to the widely recognized “Mike Harvey’s Super-Gold Sock Hop.” —Joel Easton

Buttons may be purchased at several locations on the riverfront for $5.00 for entry to the festivities. Buttons are also available for purchase at other locations including: the Hadi Shriner’s office, Old National Bank, Evansville Teachers Federal Credit Union, Fifth Third Bank, First Bank, and other locations. T

he Blue Man Group has combined drama, dance and multi-media to bring a ritualistic performance to the spectators bringing them into the common kinship of humanity. The group artfully constructs a postmodern, Dionysian comedy. They are the sensational stage act with a twentyyear run. The Blue Man Group and its multi-media experience was founded in New York City by three friends: Phil Stanton, Chris Wink and Matt Goldman. Blue Man Group now delivers their multi-sensory experience in New York City, Vegas, Boston and Chicago, as well as a highly acclaimed show on Norwegian Cruise Line’s Epic. There are nearly 300 blue men performing today. I had the unique opportunity to interview Bhurin Sead who has performed with the group since 2008. Sead shared his thoughts with me about the cultural significance throughout the performances and the main characteristics of the Blue Man himself. In the hopes of experiencing the Blue Man phenomenon, I attempted to peel back the surface of their blue skin and get inside what it is like to be a Blue Man. What I found inside made me feel elated as if given a jolt of vibrant air.

2012 • www.News4UOnline.com

Bhurin Sead (BS): The Blue Man is a loveable blue-skinned

creature whose behavior and actions are like those of an innocent child as when the Blue Men appear to be surprised and perplexed by common artifacts of modern society or by audience reactions. He is hyper-aware and sensitive to the audience and portrays a utilitarian expression, a tabula rasa, like a blank canvas. The Blue Man never takes things for granted, he is naturally curious about the world and nothing gets by the character. Their eyes actively take in everyone and everything around them.

News4U (N4U): Can we talk about the symbolism of the PVC pipe drumming and the knowledge that we are all connected. Does Blue Man Group have a social message? BS: I’d say it would be ‘community’. The show is about a bunch of strangers having an experience together and the three Blue Men are a bit of an ‘everyman’. They try to understand the audience, while the audience tries to understand them. They establish a thread between them. It’s all about connection and community. The PVC piping is used to create drums that vary in size and shape in order to produce a variety of tones. Some of the drums change shape to give an even larger variety of tones while others

change color with the changes in tempo and rhythm. The PVC pipe drumming is central to music as a primal, instinctual and totally visceral universal language. The playing of the PVC instruments always begins with slow experimentation on each instrument to convey a sense of discovery of each ones sounds and functions. The digital message board comes on, displaying the lyrics to the song and encouraging the audience to sing along. All these bits lead to an ultimate climactic concert.

N4U: What is the significance of the color blue? How do

the disguises benefit the show? The three of you are baldcapped with blue painted heads and clad entirely in black. How are you able to captivate the audience through mere presence? BS: The color blue is a natural, neutral color with no connotations attached. It is a welcoming color. The character is stripped down and quietly engaged with imagination. This is striking to the audience. I once heard this phrase in training, it is better to be interested than interesting. It is in these moments of heightened awareness that the character tries to figure out what’s happening and he is completely captivated by his own imagination. The whole ensemble is cool and mysterious. That leaves more room for examination.

N4U: Could you put in words the embodiment of the Blue

BS: The Blue Man is not an alien. We talk about him as

this otherness. He is a super innocent who takes risks and is always exploring. Our identity is enigmatic, engaging and thought-provoking. All of which are words that we use to describe the Blue Man character itself. Blue Men always appear as a group of three. Not only are Blue Men viewed as outsiders to the rest of the world but it is the smallest group possible wherein there can be a subgroup of more than one, as well as a subgroup of one. This is the outsider. Many of the Blue Man skits involve one of the three Blue Men performing in a manner inconsistent with the other two. —Tamatha Lant

The W.C. Handy Blues & Bar-B-Que Fest:

Painting Henderson Blue

A

languorous moon saunters up into the sky on a torrid June night on the Henderson river front. It is coaxed out of its slumber by the steady strut of blues guitars and the melancholy voices of love lost. The source of this summer-time magic is the W.C. Handy Blues and Bar-B-Que Festival, which makes its return to the tri-state the week of June 9th – 16th. The music is and will always be the belle of the ball because the festival itself celebrates the life and legacy of trumpeter William Christopher Handy who is praised as the “Father of Blues.” Fate brought him to Evansville after he and his band were returning home to Alabama from the 1892 World’s Fair in Chicago. He found work on a street paving crew, formed a band and while playing at a Henderson barbecue he met his wife Elizabeth Price. The Henderson Music Preservation Society is tasked to keep his story and his music alive by presenting the festival. This year’s festival boasts a full line-up of bands local and beyond. Cole Stevens and Steven Boros, Tee Dee Young, The Boscoe France Band, Them Bones, Mark May Band, Mississippi Heat, Chubby Carrier and Bayou Swamp Band, the Cash Box Kings, Dana Fuchs and many more will be performing.

While the notes inject passion into the air, patrons will have a feast of barbecue at their fingertips. The Taste of Henderson Barbeque Cook-off offers barbecue from all over the southeast as well as Kentucky. To add some unique flavor in the mix there will also be a Zydeco Night accented by red beans and rice. Zydeco is an American folk music primarily rooted in the Creole culture of Louisiana that contains German, French, Irish and Latin musical elements. The W.C. Handy Blues and Bar-b-que Festival is not just for audiophiles and foodies. The celebration will include a “Street Strut Peoples Parade” which is in the spirit of Mardi Gras where participants dress in vibrant, zany costumes and stride proudly down the streets. At the end of the parade one participant is chosen as the Grand Ooh-Pee-Doo, a joyous personality to signify the march. The festival truly has something for everyone. There will also be a host of activities for children in a welcoming family-oriented atmosphere also a beer garden for those 21 and over to enjoy. The best part of it all is that this festival won’t cost you a single red cent. The W.C. Handy Blue and Bar-b-que Fest is no small feat. This event draws in people from almost every state and many from abroad. The festival has won awards from the Kentucky Travel Industry Association and the Southeast Tourism Society for the great time this event has to offer. Let the W.C. Handy Blues and Bar-B-Que Fest sweep you off your feet! —Nick Durcholz

An Interview with Michael Rosenbaum on Old Days

News4U (N4U): I’d love to hear a description of your new film “Old Days”. Is it an autobiographical storyline or fiction?

Michael Rosenbaum (MR): It is

mostly fiction. There are a few things in the story that are based on reality. I won’t tell you those things though.

14 | June

2012 • www.News4UOnline.com

The story is about a man who is unsatisfied with his career as the face of a nationwide television campaign, so, he heads back to Indiana for his High School Reunion. And in attempt to relive the Old Days, he forces his humdrum friends to take revenge on their abusive high school principal, wreaks havoc on their respective marriages and falls in love with the girl he left behind... who’s supposed to get married in five days.

N4U: Who are the main actors in this film?

MR: It’s an ensemble piece, so I like to

think that all of the characters are pretty important and we have a great cast. Morena Baccarin, Harland Williams, Nick Swardson, Isaiah Mustafa, Kris Polaha, Danielle Bisutti, Sarah Colonna, Liz Carey, Emma Caufield, Mike Haggerty and Jay Ferguson all really brought something special to their roles. N4U: What was your favorite part of being home in Indiana? MR: The people. Everyone was so gracious. To see my friends helping out and pulling cables, or just being an extra in a scene was just surreal. I really had a

tough time adjusting when I got back to Los Angeles. Just like my character in Old Days, I found myself falling in love with the town I left so many years ago. I would also like to take this time to thank everyone in Newburgh and Evansville for the amazing support. We could not have done it without you. Period! And thanks to Bob’s Gym, Castle High School, Comfort Inn, Le Merigot, Town and Country Ford, Knob Hill Tavern, Pizza King and Sonic.”

N4U: When will we be able to see your epic film premiere? And where?

MR: I like the word epic. I’m hoping to

have a premiere in both Los Angeles and Evansville sometime next year. That’s the plan. It usually takes about a year to finish a film. —Tamatha Lant

Visit Barcelona travel

B

arcelona is the second largest city in Spain. For visitors it stands as a pillar for art and architecture. Located just off La Rambla, the city’s main pedestrian path is Palau Guell (Well Palace). Designed by renowned architect Antoni Gaudi and constructed between 1886 and 1888, this unusual home was designed as a palace. The architect enjoyed showing it off to his friends by using it as a venue for concerts and exhibitions. Antoni Gaudi, an artist and modernist architect famous for his unique designs is responsible for some of the most incredible sights to see in Barcelona. Barcelona’s Eixample (Extension) district was constructed in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Three of Gaudi’s most impressive designs can be seen here. The first is Casa Batillo; a house built in 1877 and converted into a block of flats (apartments) by Gaudi between 1904 and 1906. The reworked façade is a masterpiece of form and style, with a skeletal quality, earning the building its nickname “House of Bones.” The “skulls” are actually balconies and the “bones” are supporting pillars. The second, Casa Milia is most commonly referred to as La Pedrera (the Stone Quarry). Gaudi designed this eight story apartment block around two circular courtyards with no straight walls in the entire building. The wealthy Milia family commissioned the work in 1906; they lived in the apartment on the first floor now open for tours. The top floor is a museum dedicated to explaining Gaudi’s work and more importantly offers access to the roof, perhaps the most interesting feature. The roof looks like a whimsical world of strange creatures, as the sculptured ducts and chimneys take on almost human features. The threatening appearance of these chimney “creatures” has earned them the nickname “espanta-bruixes” (witch-scarers). The final Gaudi masterpiece in the Eixample area is perhaps the most well-known of his works. Still unfinished, construction on La Sagrada Familia (Church of the Holy Family) began in 1882 and has continued since Gaudi’s death in 1926. The work was interrupted in 1936 by the Spanish Civil War, during which many of Gaudi’s models and plans for the church were destroyed. The current design is based on reconstructed plans and some added modern influences. The best way to experience this site is to go inside for a look and then take the elevator up to the top level. Work your way back down via the narrow spiral staircase while stopping at the various windows and narrow balconies for amazing views of the exterior. Located on a hilltop just outside the city center, Parc Guell is the final Gaudi design that is well worth a visit. At the entrance stand two buildings that resemble fairy tale houses made of gingerbread. Much of the park is decorated with mosaics of broken tiles. The colonnaded pathway under the roadway viaduct is an unusual feature of the park which is reminiscent of an image from a Dr. Seuss story. Relax on one of the serpentine benches that surround the park and take in the breathtaking views of the city below. With its amazing array of shops, restaurants and museums along with dazzling art and architecture, Barcelona can impress and inspire the creative soul in all of us. —Pam Reimann

Glen Campbell:

“On the Road to my Horizon”

C

ampbell rides on…. knowing that his career and his time onstage soon will end, that eventually he will no longer be able to consistently put on the kind of show that fans will want to see and hear. The country crooner has been very public about his battle with Alzheimer’s. Now 76, Campbell states, “The music is still all there.” But he occasionally messes up a lyric and when that happens, he stops and says to the audience “I’m glad to be here, I’m glad to be anywhere!” and then starts again. He told one audience that ‘If I did it perfect every time, there’d be no surprise” and another; “Always remember this friends: If you do it perfect, they’ll want it that way every time!” Campbell recognizes problems in performance but has a positive attitude toward them. “If you didn’t know that he had Alzheimer’s going into the show, it would have been obvious that something was wrong but he was in good spirits about it and whenever his daughter corrected him about something, he just smiled and laughed and made jokes.” Instead of retiring his sequined shirts and goodtime songbook, Campbell defies his illness as he “Rides out on a horse in a star-spangled rodeo” and gives his fans one more chance to connect with him live. “But I’m gonna be where the lights are shinin’ on me” as he takes that final bow and says goodbye on anunprecedented “Farewell Tour” to relive his music history, the applause and love from his fans. Campbell deserves much appreciation in return. He lives a rich, rewarding life, one filled with awards and glory. He has performed and recorded with Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and the Beach Boys and as part of the Wrecking Crew, a group of virtuosic session musicians in the 1960s. Campbell has much praise as an actor, a TV personality, gifted singer and world-class guitar player. He co-starred alongside John Wayne as La Boeuf in True Grit. From 1968-72, he was host of his own hit TV variety show, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour. He has won five Grammy awards, three Gammy Hall of Fame Awards, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and more than a dozen country music awards. He has had eight No. 1 country albums and sold more than 45 million albums worldwide. His latest album, “Ghost on the Canvas,” will be his last. He is one of the last real country singers left and a legend as both a solo artist and a behind-the-scenes session musician. Onstage, Campbell plays along with his three daughters and his son, Shannon Campbell. In an interview, Shannon was asked, “So, how do you want your father to be remembered?” And he said, “Glen is going to be remembered as the best entertainer and the best musician — all in one person. Nobody else has had such success in both areas. It’s quite a legacy.” —Tamatha Lant Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309 • June 2012

E-Liquids:

W

A Spectrum of Flavor

hen you consider e-Cigarettes and their accessories there’s a lot to take in. Aside from the health benefits, as opposed to tobacco smoking, there’s the vast array of flavors, money savings and freedom (i.e., smoke in bars!) I’ll start with the health reasons to cut the tobacco out of your life. With vaporizers (electronic cigarettes), there is no second hand smoke, simply because there is no smoke at all. What looks and feels like smoke is only a water vapor. Most traditional tobacco cigarettes contain at least 80 cancer causing chemicals, including tar. Vaporizers have none of these ingredients. In fact, there can be more than 300 harmful chemicals in a tobacco cigarette, none of which you’ll find in an E-cigarette. When you cut out those 300+ potentially addictive chemicals you’ll find yourself smoking less. The only similar ingredient is nicotine. I talked to someone from Goat’s Roll-Your-Own & Supplies about the e-liquid vaporizers they offer. These are refillable devices that you refill yourself with long lasting and flavorful fluids.

News 4U (N4U): What all do you need to get started?

Goat’s Smokes (GS): To get started you have to choose

which type of vaporizer you prefer and then pick your choice of e-liquid flavors. We then provide you with an eye dropper.

N4U: How easy is it to use them? Can you tell us about

about the process of refilling them? GS: We have several types of vaporizers that use the e-liquid. One is called ‘Raging Vapor’ which looks just like a cigarette pack and comes with cartridges that they refill once the e-liquid is out. They use what looks like an eye dropper and add drops into the empty cartridges. The other system is called Joye eGo-T which utilizes a tank system. It is a single atomizer that comes with a tank system. You fill the tank up with e-liquid with the eye dropper.

N4U: What flavors do you offer?

GS: Riptide is a blend of fruit flavors including Blue Raspberry

and Strawberry with a hint of cool menthol. Blue Spot is the Chuck Norris of e-juices. Prepare for a roundhouse kick to the taste buds. Pink Spot is a tempting fusion of flavors sure to hit the spot. Flavor fusion includes hints of Raspberry, Pineapple and Lime. Black Mamba is a fierce blend of multiple flavors headlined by blackberry and a smooth cranberry flavor with a splash of citrus. Outlaw is very tasty and very popular. Swagger is the smoothest and most flavorful tobacco based flavor you have ever tried.

18 | June

2012 • www.News4UOnline.com

N4U: Now there’s a lot of controversy over flavored smokes (in-general) appealing to kids. What steps do you take to discourage and/or counteract that? GS: You have to be 18 years old to enter and buy any of these products at the store. We do not advertise any of these products in our windows. —Jae Mills

Wednesday, June 20th from 4 pm-7 pm, Goat’s Smokes on 4219 N. First Ave. in Evansville will be having a tasting of e-liquids, steam stones and shisha with free refreshments. They will also demonstrate how the vaporizers and hookahs work. Plus a special sale on all these products! Details coming soon on their facebook page and website goatsryo.com

ontrary to popular belief, gun owners are a very diverse genus. Each individual has varying passion and reason for their weapons. To compensate for the variety Lock N’ Loadw Firearm Sales does their homework and places a keen ear to the ground. In turn, they are able to detect the slightest of inflections or dialects to make an in-depth and informed analysis of the type of species of gun owner they are dealing with. Jason Brown of Lock N’ Load Firearm Sales describes this process. “The seasoned gun owner typically knows what he or she wants down to the color or finish or feature that may be offered,” said Brown. Clearly, this type of gun owner is the easiest to deal with but Lock N’ Load makes absolutely sure they are satisfied. “We try to keep the popular models in stock and we also bring new products in. We do this while pricing off a fair margin,” said Brown. Because Lock N’ Load is a small business they are able to stretch to the needs of their customers and do so in a personable and dependable fashion. The most challenging of the ‘species’ is the novice, uninformed gun owner and Lock N’ Load excels in providing these customers with concise service. “When a new gun owner walks in the store I always ask some pre-application type of questions. Then based on how they answer these questions I can inform them and point them in the best direction.” Brown is one of three co-owners of Lock N’ Load Firearm Sales and he shows an obscene amount of insight

Lock N’ Load Firearm Sales: An Essential Ally for Gun Owners

that is only a third of the store’s arsenal of superb customer service. The Lock N’ Load team can provide customers with overwhelming knowledge of ammunition, accessories and of course, guns. This is all fine and dandy but as any rationallyminded individual knows when it comes to gun ownership and the lifestyle attached it cannot exist without safety. Lock N’ Load has this front covered as well. “Most of your gun owners use the primary safety precautions. Never point wevery gun as if it is loaded. But some common precautions are forgotten, like knowing what is behind your target, so if you miss you aren’t putting anyone in danger. Also, a lot of people tend to forget that bullets can ricochet and that the report from a gun firing will damage your hearing over time, so make sure you wear earplugs and protective glasses,” said Brown. Cool Gadgets for Dad G Track Tracking Logger

Ever wonder where your teen driver is taking the family car? Introducing the G Track Tracking logger, simply place the small (1.5” x 1.5”) G Track unit wherever you like Teenage driver’s car, company delivery vehicle or the company service van. The G Track records date, location, speed, time at each location and displays this information on an easy-to-use interface powered by Google Maps and Google Earth. The G Track is water resistant, meaning it can be mounted outside as well. A Strong magnetic box is available for vehicle mounting. When not in use, an on-board motion sensor puts the unit to “sleep” to conserve battery power. LED status lights also indicate when the unit is powered on, when it is tracking, and when the battery is low or the memory is full.

SpyCobra

Extremely useful and highly covert, the SpyCobra is perfect for dads who want to keep an eye on their kids’ computer activities, employers who want to monitor their employees’ productivity or private investigators gathering information. The SpyCobra is a covert computer logging device that is a giant leap forward in spy technology. What makes this device unique is that it does not need to be left plugged into a PC to record keystrokes and screenshots. You simply plug the SpyCobra into a USB port and click the install button. Within 15 seconds the tracking software will log key strokes, track websites visited and take screen shots at user-defined time intervals. It will even take screenshots when predetermined words or phrases are typed.

4 Channel Video Surveillance System

Protect your home or business with this 4 channel video surveillance system. It comes with everything you need to keep an eye on your property. Included in this kit is a 4 channel digital video recorder that will record all four of the cameras onto its internal 500 GB hard drive. It uses the latest video compression technology for a great picture on live view and playback. It also records everything in real-time. You will be able to record up to several weeks of information by continuous recording or motion recording. Equipped with a front USB slot, you will be able to offload any information to a USB flash drive to make a copy or to hand over to the authorities.

Cell Phone Recon

The Cell Phone Recon software allows you to covertly monitor all of the activities on your cell phone. Log incoming and outgoing calls, incoming and outgoing text messages and emails and also, track phone location. The software has been designed to provide 100% confidentiality and to ensure that nobody discovers that you are monitoring them. Not for use on iPhones. The software must only be used to monitor cell phones when the owner or user has given permission for you to do so. ROMP: Bluegrass Roots & Branches Festival 2012

credit punch brothers

I

n the season of bare feet and shades there is a local music festival that stands shoulder to shoulder with the big boys. The ROMP Bluegrass Festival boasts a lineup a primal but celestial lineup of mountain music, jamgrass, bluegrass and general old timey audio magic. The amount of musicians is so staggering; listing them all is a chore. One of the bands at the helm of this year’s festival is the Punch Brothers. According to the Punch Brothers Official website, in 2006 former Nickel Creek member Thile instigated the collaboration that evolved into Punch Brothers when he recruited Eldridge, banjo player Noam Pikelny and violinist Gabe Witcher to back him on a solo album. Bassist Paul Kowert joined the band three years later. From that point on they have been playing their style of bluegrass boasting finger-blistering banjo riffs and airy, crooning vocals. The band is in the midst of touring to promote their latest album Who’s Feeling Young Now? Guitarist Chris Eldridge has taken a time out from the haze of the road to chat with News4U.

News4U (N4U): Can you describe the experience of playing outdoor festivals like ROMP and what makes them special to you?

Chris Eldridge (CE): I love playing those kinds of festivals. I grew up going to those kinds of festivals. My father Dan Eldridge

was in a bluegrass band playing festivals and still is to this day all over the place. I really grew up at festivals with seas of lawn chairs, vendors and people playing music on the campground. An amped up festival crowd is the best crowd a band could hope for. When we played ROMP last year, we had such an incredible crowd there. Another cool thing about festivals is that they are this meeting point for bands to come from all over the place to congregate to for a weekend. There is a real kind of community spirit that festivals foster.

N4U: Being the guitarist, what would you say the guitar’s major role in the Punch Brothers is? CE: I try to be the center of the sound. The guitar is above the bass but below the mandolin, banjo and fiddle. Between the bass and guitar, I think they ideally set a kind of bedrock that the rest of the music can sit upon.

N4U: Did you start with another instrument or have you always played guitar? CE: I have always played guitar. I used to sing a lot as a child. Both of my parents are banjo players, like I was saying before,

I grew up immersed in bluegrass but because of that I wanted to get as far away as possible from what they we doing. I started out playing electric guitar and I loved the Allman Brothers. Then gradually, over time I realized I was lousy at all of it. So, I picked up the acoustic guitar and started listening to Tony Rice records that my mom got me and I really connected with it. — Nick Durcholz The 2012 ROMP: Bluegrass Roots & Branches Festival is June 28th-30th. Downtown Farmer’s Market Starting May 25th, Memorial Day weekend and continuing through September 28th, local food and craft providers will gather in the grass lot at the corner of Second and Sycamore Streets to vend their goods on Fridays from 8 am to 1:30 pm.

arket manager Cristine Dawson says in addition to the fresh local meats, produce and baked goods, this summer the Downtown Farmer’s Market will feature events or live entertainment every weekend. The various events will include a presentation from Mesker Park Zoo, a magician, a jazz band from Newburgh, a solar workshop and a wool-spinning workshop, among many others. Dawson herself will partner with a friend to give a presentation about the benefits of local foods on July 6th. This is Dawson’s first year with the Vanderburgh County Farm Bureau sponsored market. Previously, she was manager of River City Food Co-Op for three and a half years. Taking on the farmer’s market has offered her the opportunity to continue to learn about the community. “I’m finding so many local producers of so many things,” said Dawson. “It’s exciting.” The vendors will include Bud’s Farm Market which offers usually at least nine varieties of tomatoes (“His tomatoes are the best tomatoes I’ve ever had,” said Dawson). Off the Fence Farm which offers carrots and all kinds of sweet and hot peppers. They boast a large variety of fresh peppers in colors ranging from yellow to purple. Also, Stonewall Farms which offers local and grass-fed meats. Below Dawson shares one of her original recipes for a dish she makes with foods purchased at the farmer’s market. —S. Carrigan

6 large multicolor bell peppers from Off the Fence Farms ½ an onion from Off the Fence Farms, minced 1 lb of Ground Beef from Stonewall Farms 1 cup of long grain brown rice ½ cup parmesan 3 tablespoons butter salt and pepper •Saute beef in a skillet until brown drain the fat into the pot you will use to cook the rice. •Stir the cup of rice into the fat on high heat until rice is coated. •Add 2 cups of water, bring to a boil then simmer until all water is absorbed (about 40 minutes). •Combine the butter and onion in a skillet and heat on low until onion is clear. •Cut the top off of the peppers and set aside. •Remove the seeds and other insides and line up in a baking dish. •Combine all prepared ingredients, salt and pepper and the ½ cup of parmesan in a mixing bowl, then scoop into the open tops of the peppers. •Place the “lids” back on and bake in the oven at 375 until the peppers are cooked to suit your taste. For more on local food, visit Dawson’s local food blog at www.foodfromhere.typepad.com, or hear her speak on the benefits of local food at the Downtown Farmer’s Market on July 6. Evansville’s favorite crispy cracker style.

Kipplee's Stadium Inn, under a variety of names, has been a functioning tavern since the early part of the 20th century. As a matter of fact, in1955 Evansville Mayor H.O. Roberts often stopped in for a cold drink and gazed out the windows to the east where his namesake stadium was being built. The current owners, Chip and Laurie Schutz bought the business in 1989 and gave it its current name, as well as a remodel, family room and expanded food menu. It was then that my friends and I, all broke college students, would gather at Kipplee's before going to the Rocky Horror Picture Show at Ross Center. Strombolis and the gooey mozzarella breadsticks were a must and they're still Kipplee's hallmarks. They use the same recipes and they are as gooey and garlicky as ever. More recently, in 2000 the Schutz' added Kipplee's Party House, a separate building for private parties. It houses a large game room called Kippleeville and a drive-through carry-out window. Every day from 11 am - 2:30 pm a lunch buffet is offered in the Party House. We stopped by to sample the buffet recently and were thrilled to find a good-sized salad bar with all the usual veggies, pasta salad, ham, olives, peppercinis and more, along with fresh bread sticks, hot baked potatoes ready for loading, chicken noodle soup, a platter of soft oatmeal raisin cookies and a variety of Kipplee's thin crust pizzas.

Kipplee's has always made their crust from scratch and it is a great example of Evansville's favorite crispy cracker style. Although thin, the crust is sturdy enough to keep the slice from slouching as you pick it up and the edges are bubbly and crackly-good. Sausage, pepperoni and a spicy-style pizza with jalapenos were on the bar when we arrived but the quick arrival of a supreme pizza fresh out of the oven had us scurrying up for seconds. That thick, soft, stringy mozzarella that Kipplee's uses with such abandon on their mozzarella bread practically oozed off the slices, under generous toppings of pepperoni, sausage, black olives, mushrooms, onions and green peppers. It was a really very good pizza and the buffet is a bargain at $7.49 ($4.99 for kids, $.99 kids 3 and under) including your drink. The Party House is spacious with two large private rooms and the game room which houses tons of games from arcade games to basket-shooting, carnival-style strength games, slot machines, wheels of chance and more. The place is filled with all those bright, flashing, dinging games of skill that kids love. Party packages are offered for groups by size. Regular pizza packages include pizza, combo appetizer baskets and breadsticks. Kids' packages include pizza, soft drinks and game tokens. You may also choose from options to create your own party menu. —Aimee Blume Kipplee's Stadium Inn Restaurant is located at 2350 E Division St., off Boeke Rd. across from Robert's Stadium. Phone: 479 -1542. Kipplee's Party House and Drive Through Carry-Out is located right behind Kipplee's Stadium Inn. For Carry-out call 476-1936. For party information, call 476-8800.

T

hat's because her cuisine comes from way, way south of the border. At her much-talked about restaurant, she offers traditional dishes from her home country of El Salvador in Central America. She creates a variety of authentic tastes from Puerto Rico, Peru, Argentina, Ecuador and from the Dominican Republic. "I kept hearing about how Mexican food was so popular in Evansville," she said, "but there was no place to get other Latin food. I am from El Salvador but I get my friends from other countries to teach me how to cook their favorite food. We keep trying and they taste it until it is just right. My cook, Christian Barrueta is from Peru and he has taught me how to make all the Peruvian food." Alfaro came to Evansville in 1999, got involved with her neighborhood association and immediately started cooking for friends and gatherings. She whipped up amazing Latin specialties no one had ever tried before like pupusas, thick, handmade corn tortillas filled with pork, cheese and tiny loroco flower buds tucked in the middle. Everyone agreed she should open a restaurant. So last October she did, tucked along Kentucky Avenue just past Roca Bar. Alfaro is one class away from getting her degree in Social Work from USI but has decided that the restaurant is what she really loves. How lucky for us? Just as there are major differences between the cuisines of France and Germany, the countries of Central and South America have individual, rich culinary traditions that anyone who likes to eat should experience. For example, your meal at Los Alfaro will begin not with chips and salsa but with warm French bread served with a green sauce of cilantro, mint, garlic and feta cheese. Must haves on the menu include lomo saltado or Peruvian Fajitas which are seasoned with ginger, served with fried rice and fried potatoes. Another is the bistecca con tallerines verdes or steak with green noodles. Grilled beef is accompanied by spaghetti in a green herb sauce that has its roots in Italian pesto, filtered through Peru. Los Alfaro is the only place in Evansville to find crisp,

mealy cassava (yucca) fries, which she serves with cheese sauce and sautéed shrimp or shredded pork. Yucca is a root similar to a potato but drier, starchier and nuttier. It is absolutely delicious fried or mashed. Another exclusive ingredient at Los Alfaro are plantains. Those big, starchy bananas that are enjoyed fried or mashed in so many Caribbean cuisines. You may enjoy wine and domestic or imported beer with your meal. An outdoor patio and larger parking lot have been added. There is also a dance floor that is fired up on Saturday nights. Inquire about party arrangements and salsa dance lessons! There has been a lot of recent buzz about Los Alfaro. Take a side trip away from the "trendy" areas and find out why this hidden gem is quickly becoming a local hot spot. — Aimee Blume Los Alfaro is located at 1704 S. Kentucky Ave., just past RocaBar. T

he Haubstadt Sommerfest brings the German dream to American soil in an inebriated collage of music and more. The festivities begin on June 21st at Haubstadt Park in Haubstadt, Ind. on the West Stage with the Lil’ Miss Haubstadt competition in which rosy-faced girlies will sashay onstage in their most adorable summer threads. The competition begins at 6 pm. Simultaneously, the Bierstube will greet the arrival of the evening as it opens to patrons 21 and over. Stompbox 40 is set to perform on the main stage from 8 pm to 12 pm to initiate the frivolity and rock the night to its knees. On the 22nd the Talent Show will begin at 5:30 pm on the West Stage showcasing a variety of individuals boasting a wide array of fun and interesting talents. At 6 pm, the Bierstube will rouse in a chorus of slurred speech and catcalls. Nashville recording artist Bobby James, known for his uncanny ability to engage his audience, will arrive onstage at 8 pm to keep the party going. The festival ends on the 23rd with a grand finale starting at 8:00 am with the Laufenfest, a balance to the indulgence. The fest within a festival includes the Little Dutch Run; followed by the 5K run at 8:20 am and the leisurely 5K walk at 8:30 am. Post-race there will be prizes awarded and family friendly entertainment. While most all other Sommerfest events are free of charge there are registration fees for each race and sign up is sharply 6:30 am to 7:45 am only. Once the racers have run their respectable course, a parade will be launched at 1 pm. on West Elm Street. The parade will feature local businesses, volunteers and philanthropic organizations. Then, like it has for the past two evenings the Bierstube will resurrect itself at 6 pm for one last hazzah. To see the 2012 Haubstadt Sommerfest off to a memorable past (or Back to the Future) will be McFly! Back to the 80’s at 8 pm on the Main Stage. Get Deutsch’d this June! —Nick Durcholz

JiM stoltZ’s WorK For saMe-seX couPles

E

vansville-based attorney Jim Stoltz’s downtown law practice specializes in estate planning, representing small businesses, litigation and he’s looking to expand his practice to specifically work on estate planning with same-sex couples. Stoltz does have a personal connection to the issues of same-sex partnerships, since he has a family member who is homosexual and he and his family have long supported gay rights. For him, it’s also a good business move. He sees a niche demographic who are currently underserved in this area. Same-sex marriage is currently illegal in Indiana. Not only can samesex couples not experience the feeling of having their relationships recognized by society but they also face practical issues with estate-planning. When they get married, heterosexual couples are automatically granted rights like making a health care decision for their spouse if the spouse cannot make the decision for him or herself. They are also automatically granted a cut of their spouse’s estate, with or without a will (though Stoltz still recommends married couples write a will). The estate-planning Stoltz plans to provide to Evansville’s gay community includes guiding same-sex couples through completing documents that will help them designate their partners for such roles as beneficiaries to get as close as possible to the same situation legally as if they were married. He also notes that the work is relatively inexpensive. Couples can get what they need with only a few hundred dollars in attorney’s fees. Stoltz will continue to work in other areas while he pursues serving same-sex couples in the community. —S. Carrigan

The right-handed pitcher has thrown in the Frontier League before when he was a member of the Normal CornBelters in 2010. Dan is reunited with pitching coach Brooks Carey, who guided Blewett in Normal during his six win season. “This is a big addition for Evansville,” said Carey. “I am very familiar with Dan and we are very excited to have him here.” Blewett most recently pitched for Lake County and Fargo-Moorhead last season, collecting seven wins and building a 1.8 strikeout to walk ratio. Expect him to be a big, powerful arm in the rotation for the Otters this season.

OUTFIELDER MATT SHEELY The right-handed hitting outf ielder Matt Sheely joined the Otters on April 10 th as a free agent. He instantly became one of the top Evansville offseason additions after playing with AAA-Pawtucket of the Boston Red Sox organization last season. “Matt joins Evansville as a very experienced outf ielder,” said Kevin Cope, the Director of Player Personnel for the Evansville Otters. “He has the speed to cover a lot of ground in the outf ield and on the bases. Sheely has played at a high level and we look for him to bring that experience to the team.” Sheely is playing in his seventh professional season this year and is a top of the order hitter for manager Andy McCauley. Expect him to get on base a lot and be a difficult out for the opposing pitching staffs all year long.

O

pal Fly I do like to call attention to people who I think are not getting enough consideration within the art community and I take an enormous pleasure in introducing Opal Fly, the woman dressed in green. She is a student, a lover, a gardener and a vibration alchemist. Since all of her energies are directed toward the most real and high-minded of all things, she gives little time to material desires and so she is disciplined; like a true philosopher. She is a Folk singer-songwriter, modern-day troubadour and a practitioner of wellness and fire magic.

localtalent Opal Fly

News4U (N4U): First, tell me about yourself as a musician.

Opal Fly (OF): I enjoy opportunities to co-create with other performers in a variety of settings. Luckily, I keep meeting consciously loving artisst in this wonderful community of creative people. Opal Fly and The Swatters play a variety of genres such as ragtime, swing, reggae, blues and folk with a variety of instrumentation. We also provide a show called Foxfire Magik and Thy Faery Pranksters, which is a mélange of music, dance and fire magik.

N4U: What has been most gratifying for you as a musician?

OF: My true joy is to play alongside dedicated musicians who fearlessly play the sounds from their heart. So far my journey (extensively through-out the U.S, Europe and a bit in the Middle East) has allowed just that; the musicians with whom I have played have taught me so much about growth. My love for playing the tenor, soprano and baritone saxophones has never diminished and I recently purchased a tenor guitar. I still love the ukulele sounds and compose a lot of my tunes on the baritone uke.

N4U: What other accomplishments do you enjoy?

OF: Writing new tunes is such a satisfying way to spend my time; with a little bit of time and patience a new song is born. I believe music is an expression of harmony and can be used as a healing device to illuminate our experiences. Until I met Foxfire Magik (co-partner of TEAM FLY at the Fly Interactive Studio), I kept my spiritual practice separate from my work as a professional musician. As I traveled with the Pranksters, we combined his organic freeform style and dancing with more formalized patterns of jazz. This melting is much more satisfying for me. Blessed with good mentors, I have been studying the yoga kriyas (practices/ exercises) that Yogi Bhajan taught and the healing arts (Meta, prayer, Reiki, Polarity and Quantum, aromatherapy, movement-dance and massage modalities) since graduating from college in 1996. I am currently practicing Trigger Point, Ayurveda Flow and Thai massages. I have opened up my home as a type of wellness studio in downtown Evansville. I want people to call for an appointment to try massages, facials, movement for health, sound study, yoga and health consultations. Most sessions end with breath-work, vocalization, drumming or other instruments...health is joy. Check my website www.opalfly.com for specials and details; also enjoy music videos and pictures from Opal Fly’s Feel Good Lounge providing music, dance, massage and yoga. —Tamatha Lant 64 | June

soundboard Dang Heathens

T

he Best Band of the Tri-State was recently awarded to Evansville's Westside band Dang Heathens at the “Battle of the Bands” contest. It was held at the Casino Aztar. The contest, sponsored by Evansville's Junior League and Morning Rotary Club, awarded the band a prize package consisting of a $10,000 Recording Studio Package provided by 77 Recording, photo/video sessions and more. Westside childhood friends (Quinn Dawson on drums, Corey Krietenstein on bass, Andy Moore as back-up vocals/ lead guitar and Heather Nunning on acoustic/rhythm guitar) formed their band Dang Heathens five years ago, playing good cover songs while perfecting their original pieces. The band consists of hard-working, youthful, spirited talent with busy families and lives who are dedicated to their passion for music. Channeling their strong work ethic, these musicians have remarkably written material that fills 2 1/2 hours of continuous play. Songwriter/guitarist Andy Moore is credited with composing the lyrics He draws upon life experiences and relationships as material for his pieces. The remaining band members add their individual instrumentation and it blends together perfectly. News4U (N4U): How did the band members meet? Dang Heathens (DH): “Andy, Corey & Quinn met during middle school and started a punk band called "The Ninjas" which lasted until 1995. Andy started performing solo at the Dogtown tavern about five years ago and one drunken night we all decided to get together and play some of Andy’s songs as a full band and it clicked into place”. N4U: Describe your style of music: Corey: "I have a very hard time nailing down our style-- maybe folk-punk. We definitely have a Bob Dylan/ The Band vibe with punk, funk grunge & alternative influence. We grew up on the Pixies, Jane's Addiction, Radiohead and Parliament/Funkadelic, James Brown, and grunge & metal bands." N4U: Who’s your favorite drummer? Quinn: I am the best drummer (at least that's what my parents said) .... seriously, I have great admiration for local drummers Tim Mitchell (formerly of Namaste) and Heath Metzger (Mock Orange) N4U: What musician inspires you? Heather: "Dave Matthews completely! I didn't get a guitar until I was 20 and wish I'd started sooner. I met Andy and

asked him for lessons; he lit the spark & inspired me. He's the seed and growth for this band." N4U: What would you like to tell the Tri-State Community? DH: "We'd like to thank the Junior League and Rotary Club for sponsoring the event. It was an amazing experience and we are grateful to all who came out to see & vote for us. We hope to see more fans in the future! It is rewarding to win this title and be complimented by our community. We thank our fans and don't take anything for granted. We are working with what we have and are proud of it." Corey adds.... "We are available for gigs - and are handy with auto work also..... Seriously, we’d love our music to be heard all over the world, but at the very least it’s an excuse for me to take a night off from my ridiculously busy schedule and hang out with my brothers and sister, and even if that’s all our band accomplishes I’m OK with that”. —Lanea Stagg Find FREE DOWNLOADS of original material at: www.facebook.com/dangheathens Upcoming Shows: Tuesday, June 12th - Wired Coffeehouse (7:00 pm) 111 Northwest 4th Street - Evansville (812) 962-0819 Friday, June 29th - Deerhead - 222 East Columbia Street- Evansville (812) 425-2515 Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309 • June 2012

God of Carnage at New Harmony Theatre

HANDY MUSIC SCHEDULE 2012 SATURDAY JUNE 9

F

or 25 summers, University of Southern Indiana’s satellite stage in New Harmony has dazzled audiences with its impeccably performed and presented theatre productions and its high-caliber casts and crews. These productions invariably include guests from top-notch theatres nationwide, including Broadway performers. This summer promises to be no exception, featuring three new pieces all written since 2000 and starting strong with Yasmina Reza’s Tony-winning comedy God of Carnage. It was selected as Best Play in 2009. “This play represents some of the best new writing that’s coming out of Broadway,” says Elliot Wasserman, Producing Artistic Director of New Harmony Theatre and Chair of the Department of Performing Arts at USI. “We’re among a group of theatres that are producing it very soon after its Broadway run.” Wasserman says inclusion in this group is proof of New Harmony Theatre’s national reputation and high-regard in the eyes of New York City’s theatre community. When a playground fight between two boys requires their high-society parents to arrange a meeting, the two couples’ intended civilized discussion quickly spirals into increasingly primitive behavior and discussions of the darkest corners of their relationships. “They lose the air of propriety that they initially bring to the situation,” Wasserman says. The 90-minute play takes place in real time and has no intermission. “What makes it funny is how rapidly these folks descend into their worst possible selves,” said Wasserman. Wasserman will direct this production and it will feature Hollywood actresses Christina Moore (90210, That ‘70s Show) and Missi Pyle (The Artist, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Boeing-Boeing on Broadway). Wasserman recalls seeing Pyle on the stage when The Artist won Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards. “It was a lot of fun watching it this year knowing she was planning to join us this summer,” he said. Part of what made God of Carnage at New Harmony Theatre an attractive opportunity for actresses of this caliber was that it is considered such an important recent play. “What we have in southwestern Indiana is a real treasure,” said Wasserman. —S. Ratings are given from 1-5. “5” is the best rating a reviewer can give, meaning they were very pleased with the beer and would strongly recommend it. “1” is the lowest rating a reviewer can give, meaning they did not enjoy the beer at all.

BROOKLYN SUMMER ALE

Fat Tire Amber Ale

Citra Blonde Summer Brew, Widmer Brothers:

Christy Moore – 2 This beer poured to a dark straw color with orange overtones. Not a big fan, this beer has a bitterness that bites you a little when it hits your tongue, which makes me reminiscent of a nineteen eighties movie version of a New York street brawl where they fight dirty after jumping you in a shady parking garage, like that Wesley Snipes character in Michael Jackson’s “Bad” video.

Christy Moore – 3 This ale is amber in color with a lighter brownish tone to it, you can defiantly taste the toasted elements of the hops. Good overall flavor. Malty aroma, very malty. And the picture on the can makes me think of Pee Wee Herman’s bike “Big Red” before he tricked it out with the lion head and the fin. So if there’s any plans of a big adventure on your bike in your near future I could think of a worse companion than a nice Fat Tire.

Christy Moore – 2 This beer poured to a pale gold. When they say summer brew I think they mean last summer. Cause this beer has a skunked taste like its been sitting in the bottom of the cooler for ten days. It has a strong citrus yet grainy smell that is deceiving. It kind a makes me think if you soaked up some pine sol into a dirty rag and squeezed it into a bottle.

Jabez Martinez – 4

This is a clear amber colored beer with an extremely flowery aroma. I could taste the average malts and hops but it had a very clean finish which I enjoyed. This was a pretty solid beer with all its complexities. I liked that it didn’t have a heavy mouth feel. This is a nice summer beer to enjoy on a hot grass cutting day.

Todd Zachritz – 3.0

The always-dependable Brooklyn’s light summer ale pours a clean golden, with wispy lace. The taste is toasty up front, with a subtle hint of citrus hops in the middle, followed by a bready finish. Enjoyable and quite nice for hot summer days.

Jabez Martinez – 3.5

I didn’t like Fat Tire the first time I had it a few years ago. I hadn’t tried it again until this review. It is not bad and I would have scored it higher but I will have to do more research first. It had a light caramel aroma and some floral hops. The flavor was a little nutty with some biscuit flavors added in. I wasn’t a fan of them at first but I am coming around

Todd Zachritz – 3.0

This easy-drinking amber ale is now available in 16 oz. Cans, and it opens with a rich and malty taste. I get toasty bread, with only a faint hint of hops. Fat Tire remains an easy-drinking session beer, and an American craft beer classic.

Jabez Martinez – 3

This is your standard blonde ale and not much to write home about. It had some light hops flavor to it and some citrus but it almost didn’t taste like a beer. None of the flavors really stuck out and it almost tasted like a soda. I was disappointed with this beer because Widmer Brothers have always been a solid brewery.

Todd Zachritz – 3.0

This clean golden-amber ale pours with an attractive fine white head of carbonation, and with a light but pleasant lace on the glass. Aroma is fruit-forward. I get nicely-sweet orange. Flavor-wise, this one is citrus-hoppy, but there’s no bitterness, as it’s all balanced by a prominent sweet malt profile.

Red Hook Wit

Jabez Martinez – 4

This beer pours a hazy yellow color and I could smell the wheat and orange peel. It says it has some ginger added but I couldn’t really detect it. I don’t like ginger that much and it’s not very apparent in this beer. I liked this wit aspect a lot and thought the message on the side of the bottle was funny. “Made with ginger but still digs Mary Ann.” Don’t we all!

Todd Zachritz – 2.0 Christy Moore – 4 This beer pour and settles to a light golden color. This is a great beer, not what I was expecting, I would drink this on the regular. From the name I was expecting some fishy overtones. But was pleasantly surprised. So if you are planning a fishing trip I think you would be a little less disappointed spending hours dangling your line and only catching blue gills, if you were wasted on this seasonal brew.

This cloudy pale amber ale pours with a minimal head and lace. The aroma is malty and spicy. Upon hitting the palate, this one hits sweet and candylike, with a hint of ginger spicing it up. Nonetheless, I found this one to be overbearingly sweet, and tough to finish.

•Beer and video games have a long association. Tapper, originally a 1983 arcade game and now a computer one, tests players’ skills by challenging them to coordinate the movements of beers, a bartender, empty mugs, and patrons. • On October 17 of 1814, a rupture in a brewery tank containing 3,500 barrels of beer caused a flood of fatal proportions in the London parish of St. Giles. The wave of beer swept victims off their feet, dashed them against walls, and buried them under debris. Two houses were demolished in the sea of beer suddenly loosed upon town, and nine people lost their lives in the flood of suds. Compiled from www.tobp.com

istoric Bosse Field will be paying tribute to the film A League of Their Own on the evening of June 22nd. It is going to be an incredible event celebrating the filming of the movie at our ballpark 20 years ago. Our ballpark still maintains some of the signage that was seen in the movie including but not limited to the old-time advertisements and Racine Bells signs. According to International Movie Database, the basis of the film A League of their Own is as follows: With so many young men overseas fighting the Axis, there is a danger that professional baseball will be shut down for the duration of the war (WWII). A well-known candy manufacturer, Walter Harvey contrives the idea to create a professional baseball league for women; both the keep the sport alive and to make a profit. All players are sent to a mass try out in Chicago. Once in Chicago, they are introduced to the other girls who will be on one of the four teams. These women begin a journey that opens up a whole new world, far beyond that of the baseball diamond. The gates to the ballpark will open at 7pm for fans to play games, meet some members of the AllAmerican Girls Professional Baseball League that played during the era the movie captured, appreciate the ballpark and enjoy the festivities. The event will have a giant screen placed on the field and all who are interested to visit Historic Bosse Field can watch the movie where it was filmed. The movie will begin rolling around dusk at 8:30pm. Tickets will be a tiered system: $5.00 for general admission, $8.00 for field box and an additional price for a package deal including a Bosse Field blanket, 4 tickets to sit on the field and a box of popcorn. —Mandi Boyd Call 812-435-8686 for additional information.

Video Games Sniper Elite V2 Sniper Elite V2 captures ones attention like a bullet through the kneecap. It does so quite literally. The gamer fills the shoes of OSS agent Karl Fairburne in World War II. Fairburne finds himself deep in Nazi territory as Soviet forces surround the city of Berlin and the Third Reich has begun to deteriorate. Fairburne’s ultimate mission is to capture a German nuclear scientist for America’s benefit. On a basic level this game is a thirdperson shooter with elaborate environments and mediocre character graphics. Dig a little deeper and one finds manageable controls similar to most big title third person shooters. Deeper still, reveals a well-written storyline and a host of ways to play the game including online multiplayer and a ‘Challenge Mode’ that includes a survival or horde-like game play. Shortly after starting the game the player is introduced to the cock of the walk. Sniper Elite V2 boasts an x-ray kill cam that initiates as the player makes a vital shot on an enemy. The camera follows the bullet in flight in slow motion and as the bullet makes impact the enemy’s clothing and flesh are stripped away to reveal the bullet’s gruesome journey through bones and vital organs. A headshot is especially vivid as the bullet enters the skull a confetti of bloody bone fragments is thrown into the air and even the bullet is noticeably deformed as it exits the body. This game portrays sniping the way it should be and manages to make it into a macabre work of art. However, this game is not without its flaws but the good thing is that they are minor and manage to add character to the game. Sniper Elite Vs is probably one of the most underrated games out there. It is a must have for war buffs and shooter fans. —Nick Durcholz

7th annual Dragon Boat Racing Festival

S

even years in, and it’s going strong. On June 2, The 7th Annual Midwest Dragon Boat Racing Festival will once again draw crowds at Eagle Crest Lake for a day of sporting events, and this year it’s set to be bigger than ever. “We’re super excited to have 18 teams, because when we first started this seven years ago we only had four,” says Funk in the City Vice President Jamie Morris. The Dragon Boat Racing Festival is one of three annual events presented by Funk in the City. For spectators, the event is free to attend and offers a great setting for family fun. Tents for each Dragon Boat Racing team will surround Eagle Crest Lake, located behind Cheeseburger in Paradise. The teams choose themes for a tentdecorating contest. When they’re not watching the races, spectators can walk between the tents and see what the teams have done with their creativity. A food booth and a bounce house for kids will also complement the setting. As for the actual racing, “Until you see it, it’s kind of hard to comprehend,” says Morris, “Because it’s a very unique sport.” Internationally, he says, it’s one of the fastest-growing water sports. Eighteen paddlers, a drummer and a “ flag-catcher” race 250 meters on what is essentially a huge canoe with a dragon’s head on the front. At the finish line, flagcatcher climbs onto the dragon’s head and pulls a flag out of a buoy. This is an essential part of the competition and if the flag-catcher doesn’t get the flag, the team gets a time penalty. This aspect “definitely adds to the excitement of the races,” Morris says. It’s part of the spectacle that makes it fun to watch. —S. Carrigan The 7th Annual Midwest Dragon Boat Racing Festival will be on June 2 at Eagle Crest Lake behind Cheeseburger in Paradise. Races will begin in the morning at 8 am and go all day, until around 5 pm. Spectators can come free of charge and are invited to bring children. Unbeknownst to the wicked ruler, the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth, ‘Thor’) who was dispatched to kill her, has other plans. The movie marks the directorial debut for Rupert Sanders. Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) rounds out the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White’s beauty and power. The Vow

Sony Pictures Can the magic of original love be recaptured, once lost? After a devastating car accident this newlywed couple must not only overcome their physical injuries but attempt to recapture the essence of their relationship. After waking from her coma the wife has no memory of her husband and is left with the heartrending struggle to discover love once again. The Review: Based on a true story, used to mean so much. In this case however, I don’t buy it. Seriously, she thinks that the love she felt for this man in the past did not come with qualifications? Suddenly, she requires ultimate clarity concerning politics or whatever? The either/or mentality of the premise idealizes and muddles what real love is about: compromise, acceptance and flexibility. It’s a poor attempt at wisdom.

Joyful Noise

Warner Brothers Pictures The Joyful Noise Competition means more to the small town of Georgia than the Super Bowl. These simple folk rely on this competition to uplift a community hit by difficult economic times and to bring meaning to their hardships. The trouble is that the community is divided in their approaches. One side wants to keep to the style that has worked for years, while the other side wants to venture into new territory. The Review: So American Idol has hit the big screen. It is the same battles, same rivalries, with even more pretend characters and less reality. Latifah and Parton against each other is so uninteresting and maybe Steven Tyler was a good choice in the TV version. No, not really and I’m sick of his commercials, too.

We Bought a Zoo

20th Century Fox Not knowing what to do, a freshly widowed man (Matt Damon) desperately attempts to bring his family back together in the quirkiest of way ever, by buying a zoo. Having no previous experience, yet having an adventurous spirit, he endeavors to make a new start and resolve the lingering issues troubling his two children, while simultaneously conquering the impossible task of bringing a failing zoo up to code. The Review: What can I say, it touched me. It’s a story of loss, reluctance, hesitance to accept and willingness to simply moving forward. Albeit, sometimes awkwardly and with total uncertainty. There is some obvious formula at play here but the interactions among the players generally ring true. The film is sad in the best of ways and you feel you’ve learned a little more about yourself by the end. True loss is a big deal and the film handles it in a fashion that though heartbreaking, you know serves a higher purpose.

Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol

Paramount The IMF has been disavowed. Meaning they have to stop global nuclear disaster with a bare minimum of help from the American government. Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) must first escape from a Russian prison and patch together a ragtag group of dedicated and somewhat inexperienced gang of patriots to achieve the impossible. Once accomplished, he does actually utter the words: “Mission accomplished.” The Review: When viewing a film, sometimes you occasionally mutter: “That could never happen?” Well, those days are behind us and with films like this plausibility is an afterthought. It does what it is supposed to do; it keeps you riveted and engaged, almost relentlessly. It achieves the right amount of levity, explains itself well enough and makes you care about the characters just enough. It’s action and if you don’t like action, stay away from Tom Cruise. He’s a bad influence. —Brian Ricketts

local band spotlight

Rebel Crossing Craig Padilla

“The Heart Of The Soul” CD (Spotted Peccary Music)

About the Band: We are three musicians that love playing music while entertaining the crowd.

What they Cover: We have a wide spread from 70's, 80's, alternative rock, blues, southern rock and of course our own music as well. We are always learning new music to try out on different crowds.

Their Influences: Jimi Hendrix, SRV, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Eric Clapton, Doors, Marshall Tucker, BB King, Robert Johnson and of course, Richard Applegate Sr.

Where you can Catch their Performances: As of right now we are playing smaller venue's and from time to time we play at TJ's Stockyard.

Idaho-based electronic musician Padilla has been a prolific member of the ambient community for some time, and this solo album is one of understated beauty. These sensitive and melodic analogue instrumentals are delicately infused with piano, strings and percolating electronic sequences, and the effect is one of warmth and passion. Expect no ominous or dark-tinged vibes here, as Padilla is definitely going for another angle. The title track, for example, is lovely and elegant, based around a circular piano melody. “Lost In You” summons a rolling drum rhythm to accompany the piano and electronics. The expansive 13-minute “Midnight Encounter” is more mysterious and ambient, while the closer, “Divine Embrace”, brings it all back down to Earth with a cloud of gauzy strings and guitar. “The Heart Of The Soul” is a gorgeous and tender album of lilting melody and fragile soundscaping. Quite enjoyable! —Todd Zachritz

Ministry

“FIX” DVD (Gigantic Pictures) This long-awaited DVD is less a documentary of Ministry’s 1996 “Sphinctour” as it is a character study of Al Jourgensen and his serious drug addictions. Painting the sometimes-genius frontman as a paranoid “rock star” whose attitude and excess is legendary, even among his fellow junkies and musician friends, ‘FIX” shows what fame and money (and indulgence) can do to an intelligent, thinking, and conscientious individual. Peppering the backstage/off-stage insanity with plenty of live clips (which sound great) helps this presentation, as do the large amount of interviews with past Ministry members (namely Paul Barker, Rey Washam, Louis Svitek, and Ogre), friends, tourmates and collaborators (David Yow, Trent Reznor, Jello Biafra, Maynard Keenan, and Buzz Osborne), and other hangers-on (Jonathan Davis? The babbling nonsense of Casey Chaos of Amen? What?). Anyway, aside from the many talking heads speaking of Al’s addictions, we get very little insight into Ministry’s history or the other members’ lives. Al is the centerpiece here, and it’s not a flattering portrait. Perhaps a must-see for serious Ministry fans, but casual fans will have no interest in seeing this messy side of a once-world class band. —Todd Zachritz

Paul Barker

“Fix This!” CD (Gigantic Pictures) Packaged with the Ministry “FIX” documentary film, or available as a download on it’s own, this solo work by the longtime Ministry bassist, programmer, and co-producer is a breath of fresh air. Not to mention it features well-done collaborations with past Ministry members who were long ago estranged from the band due to tensions, egos, drug addictions, or some combination of the aforementioned. We get Barker collaborating with old friends like Ogre and Chris Connelly, plus a remix by Maynard Keenan’s Puscifer, and an appearance by Barker’s post-punk band, USSA. Beginning with the surprisingly commercial rock track “Victory”, featuring teen actress Taylor Momsen, the album then diverts itself with “reSpite”, a creepy collab with Ogre (and Skinny Puppy producer Mark Walk). “Heavy Water” is a moody and cinematic track that uses Chris Connelly’s Scottish baritone to great effect, and his other track, the epic “Evangelical Sound Barrier”, begs for further work from the duo. And although “Fix This!” ends with some less-impressive mixes and tracks using samples of Ministry’s “Psalm 69”, the success of the first 8 cuts are enough the recommend this strong and heavy release of post-industrial rock from one of the masters. More, please! —Todd Zachritz

Melvins Lite

“Freak Puke” album (Ipecac) Adding Tomahawk/Fantomas bassist Trevor Dunn to the duo of Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover, this incarnation of the Melvins (deemed “Lite” because they are a trio, rather than the band’s normal 4-piece) creates a wildly disparate din of avante-garde noise and dirty classic rock. In short, it’s another fine Melvins album. Beginning with the spooky strings of “Mr. Rip Off”, the album runs the gamut, from the disturbing cinematic textures of “Inner Ear Rupture” to the thick stoner rock of “A Growing Disgust”. “Leon Vs. The Revolution” is a big, spliffy Sabbath-style riff-rocker, and the closing cut, “Tommy Goes Beserk” is a weird collision of “pop” elements and driving lysergia, as close to melodic as these guys choose to get. Fine, weird, and heavy sounds for the adventurous. —Todd Zachritz

Big Money And The Spare Change "God D*****, Danny!" EP

Big Money are a young Fort Wayne indie rock trio, and if this free 6-song download EP is any indication, their forthcoming full-length album could be something quite special. Taking elements from punk-tinged 90s grunge (ala Nirvana or Foo Fighters) and mixing it up with a fine Midwestern alt.country/ Americana vibe and tight musicianship, Big Money rock with a perfect amount of swagger and slack. The title track is the definite standout, but "Scar Stories (I Know)" is nearly as strong and anthemic, as well. "Friends Like Those" is a cello-accented piece that shows these guys aspire for more than simple rock. Good stuff! Grab this download from their facebook page. (www.facebook.com/bigmoneyandthesparechange) —Todd Zachritz

Janus

"Nox Aeris" CD (RealID/Warner) Chicago heavy rock act tailormade for radio, with a melodic sound that reminds of A Perfect Circle or Chevelle. The single, "Stains", is instantly familiar. with an almost industrial angle. Not bad, but these guys are riding coat-tails.

This Noise "Promises <Words" CDR (self-released)

This Noise is centered around Castle senior Andrew Fallwell, and this is their debut demo. Soundwise, it's a 10-song set of atmospheric indie rock reminiscent of Cursive or Bright Eyes, mixing emotionally intense melodies and screamy choruses. Quality work that packs a punch, and it's local!

Andrew Baum "Sober" CDR (dkwellsmusic.com)

22-year old Evansville native Baum sings his own brand of boozy folk/country Americana like he's been doing it for decades. "Stole My Booze Away" is a rollicking good-time country lament. "Record Player" is another winner, this time a sad backwoods sing-a-long. Solid work here in a rootsy vein. —Todd Zachritz
