Finger Death Punch, Killswitch Engage, Pop Evil, Trivium, Emmure, God Forbid and Battlecross have joined forces on the Trespass America Tour which will be coming to perform with their thrash and burn tactics on July 31st. A fan would be hard pressed to find such a savage collection of bands performing in one central location. “When you walk through the Trespass America Festival gate, you will be in a different territory, a new environment. You’re not just coming to see a band. It’s going to be a travelling circus that has all

themselves as a band that employs a special brand of no-holds-barred, sonic brutality. The band is Ivan Moody on vocals, Zoltan Bathory on lead guitar, Jason Hook on rhythm guitar, Jeremy Spencer on drums and Chris Kael on the bass guitar. The band made their debut in 2007 with the release of The Way of the Fist which features the band’s first single “The Bleeding.” The album was re-released in May of 2008 with three bonus tracks. Two of these tracks were released as singles.

4th of July Freedom Celebration & Fireworks Spectacular

ities and towns all over America have their own ways of celebrating the Fourth of July. Families and friends get together and have picnics as they watch parades, hear patriotic speeches and listen to patriotic music. They play games, hold family reunions and at the end of a fun filled family day, watch fireworks explode from one end of the sky to the other. In Evansville, we traditionally celebrate Independence Day on the riverfront and watch a spectacular fireworks show. This year, there are several events planned for Wednesday, July 4th from 5 – 9:30 p.m. as this 4th of July Freedom Celebration is a special event for Evansville’s Bicentennial year.

Among the offerings for this Fourth of July celebration will include: 11 Not-for-Profit food/drink vendors that will set-up along Riverside Drive for the event The Evansville Symphonic Band will perform a free concert featuring patriotic tunes at the Casino Aztar Events Plaza from 7 - 8:30 p.m. Patrons will need to bring lawn chairs or blankets with them to have a seat during this concert. The concert is sponsored by the Evansville Bicentennial Committee. At 8:05 p.m. 6 flyover passes will take place by members of the Aviation Explorer Post 447, a co-education youth program for teenagers 14-21. They are the worlds only youth organized aerial display team. The Evansville Fire Family will make a special appearance at the event again this year. They will perform at the 4 Freedoms Monument at dusk, prior to the fireworks show. A spectacular pyrotechnic display will bloom with plenty of colorful explosions when dusk hits shortly after 9 p.m. The fireworks are sponsored by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana and Casino Aztar. Special thanks should be given to Mulzer Crushed Stone, South Central Media, Veolia and the Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville for making the event possible. Melrose Pyrotechnics Company will be producing the fireworks show, as usual. It’s a good idea to stop and remember the vast geography of our country, the genius of its founders and all the people and symbols that go with it. Do you know the real reason behind why we celebrate the Fourth of July? It isn’t about the food or fireworks. Do you know the answers to questions such as ‘When America declared Independence from Great Britain?’ or even ‘How many stripes are on the flag?’ The 4th of July was the birth of our country, all the other knowledge offered to you in this article should be our country’s pride as we have grown from an infant vulnerable country to a full-grown, strong and free country. If you are an American citizen, I implore you to seek out the answers to these questions if you don’t already know them. Why, you may ask, do you need to know any of this stuff? You don’t. However, it’s all part of the fabric of our history and that is one amazing tapestry. —Tamatha Lant

Ellis Park

H

ow many times have you driven from Evansville across the aptly named Twin Bridges and into Henderson? Have you noticed the large open-air stadium on the left side of the 41? Should you have somehow missed it, then an evaluation of your perception is certainly due but if you had then you gazed upon the outer façade of Ellis Park. Originally known as Dade Park, the simulcast and semi-annual thoroughbred horse racing track has been open since 1922 with a long history of new owners peppered by financial issues, floods and tornadoes. Erected by the Green River Jockey Club under the guidance of race organizer and director A.B. “Barret” Dade and architect Ernest F. Bohme, it was slated to be one of the longest tracks in the nation with a length of one and a half miles. Due do some minor discrepancies with the blueprints and miscommunication in the early planning period, Bohme handed over plans to the original investors for a track that was almost half a mile shorter. After its initial, modest success on its opening day, October 19th, 1922, the company was soon plagued by the same wave of financial destruction that swept across the entire country and succumbed to the dark veil of the bankrupt. At the

height of Great Depression, James C. Ellis the man the park would eventually gain its name from, saw a golden opportunity and purchased the track at a Henderson County bankruptcy auction for the price of $35,100. Unfortunately, this left the Green River Jockey Club more than half a million dollars in the hole from the original investment. Over the course of next half century the proverbial torch has been passed between a multitude of independent business owners and partners, each of which have revamped, rebuilt or added onto the grounds in one way or another. Whether it was a new stables for the horses, grandstands for the fans or new sky boxes for the high waging big-wigs. The influences that have created the entire look and feel of the track are as varied as the as the colors of the horses on which the bets are placed. In September of 2006, local Kentucky Business man Ron Geary purchased the park and reinstated the July 4th opening day which nearly a decade prior had been changed by the corporate owners of the time. The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission also supported and ultimately permitted the parks proposal to reinstate year round simulcast racing and the garnering

of 252 Instant Racing Machines. The affectionately nicknamed IRM’s are the modern horse racing equivalent of a history lesson and slot machines. They take tens of thousands of unidentified races from over the course of the past 100 years and randomly select ones on which to bet. It is a perfect way to broaden the horizon of the parks audience and to create a lot of extra revenue, which in turn, raises each purse for the victors by 40-50% and that alone is enough to bring in a higher caliber jockeys and horses from around the country. They also simulcast national events such as the Triple Crown series. The official season opener is taking place on July 4th with races continuing through Labor Day every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The park itself has had a few setbacks but has time and time again proved its steadfastly aggressive gusto to rise up and overcome financial and natural disasters and to provide the community with a premiere horseracing establishment. —Chase Meneely

The Hatch, located at 816 Jefferson St. on Evansville’s south side is the virtuous reincarnation of the warped and derelict ghost of The Rev. A popular and less than welcoming venue in the 90’s, the Rev played host to a grungy gaggle of hardcore bands. The Rev also attracted less intimidating national acts such as P.O.D., Mxpx and Sixpence None the Richer. The Resurgence Church bought the building that housed the shell of the Rev in June of 2011. The pastor of Resurgence was the drummer of a local hardcore band The Redemption Song. He had a strong connection to the old venue because he had performed there so many times in the past. He teamed up with Evansville Hope for the Rejected to turn The Rev into The Hatch, a completely non-profit venue. All profits go to better the venue or to the bands who perform there. It is a poignant transformation. On June 9th the Hatch will proudly host Hawthorne Heights with Set It Off as one of nearly 75 national touring acts. News4U was granted an opportunity to speak with rhythm guitarist JT Woodruff for Hawthorne Heights in the thick of their 39 show ‘Summer of Hope’ tour.

JTW: To be honest, I get inspired by the outside world. Meeting new people, seeing new places...both of these things inspire me infinitely. I like to take these experiences and add music to them, to create memories for other people. N4U: What is the significance of the new album Hope?

t is a hot, sticky July day. The smell of corn dogs, cotton candy and lemon shake-ups fill the muggy air. There are so many sights to take in; rides to ride and the anticipation of good, clean competition that begs children of all ages to join the fun. Since 1922, the Vanderburgh County Fair has delighted the child in us all. From July 23rd- 28th, the Vanderburgh County Fair will be held at the 4-H Center on US 41. The gates will open on Monday at 3 p.m. With so many family-friendly events planned, it is difficult to choose a favorite event, even for someone who has been involved with the fair off and on for 15 years. “It is so hard to pick my favorite event. I would say the entire fair. I could never single anything out. We have something for everyone. From the littlest of children, to our senior citizens,” said Vice President of Operations Scott Berry. “It is hard to pick just one event I am looking forward to. I like the livestock events. I also enjoy the Queen pageant. What I really like is a good competition. I like to see these kids work hard and compete to the best of their abilities. It is always a tough competition and then at the end of it, everyone goes back to being friends,” said President Beth Schmitt.

All of the members of the Vanderburgh County Fair Association and its volunteers put a lot of time into planning the event that nearly 8,000 people attend daily. “My Dad was the president in 1972. My brother was president for 2 terms. I have loved the opportunity to give back. Somebody did it for me, and I am excited to continue to do it for the children. It is a truly wonderful feeling to be a part of this,” said Schmitt. There are several events that children as well as adults compete in, including growing vegetables, fruits and raising livestock. There are also main events every night that draw larger crowds including the motorcycle races and the tractor pull. They also will focus on one of the fair’s creeds. “This year we are focusing on the hands (volunteers) as being a larger part of service. It is very important to all of us to give back to our community. One of the things 4-H largely supports is the promotion of community service for the children and adults that participate. It is in our blood to give back,” said Schmitt, who is also proud of their Wednesday events that will recognize and honor Veterans.

“Attending the fair is a good way for families to safely spend time together. We have sheriffs walking the grounds. We just want everyone to enjoy the food, ride the rides and enjoy themselves,” Schmitt added. —Brooklyn Solis Prices include all entertainment. Single admission is $7.00. Season Pass is $25.00. Children 9 and under are free. For Fair ride armbands can be purchased for $18.00 and ten ride tickets are $15.00. Individual tickets are $2.00/. ou better hope you remember which box you put your lederhosen and dirndls in last summer because it’s the time of the year when the pronounced German roots of the city of Evansville come alive. The German Club on Fulton Avenue was founded in 1900 as a singing society and gathering place for the everincreasing number of German immigrants to the Evansville area. The first Volksfest was held in 1934, but it was halted in 1941 due to anti-German sentiments during WWII. The celebration was reinstated in 1962 as part of Evansville’s sesquicentennial celebration and has been a continuous annual festival ever since. As the city of Evansville enjoys its 200th year, Germania honors and preserves the German heritage and culture that is a part of our city’s history and the ancestry of many families in this area. This celebration is a replica of the Oktoberfest in Germany, complete with German bands, food and a large outdoor tent-covered biergarten. Entertainment is provided each evening by the Cincinatti Schnapp’s Band, Rhein Valley Brass and the Ratskeller Band. A full German meal is served at lunch or dinner for $8, consisting of either bratwurst or pig’s knuckle and a choice of sides, including German potato salad, which is expertly made fresh daily by the Germania Ladies Auxiliary. Don’t forget an order of our locally famous krautballs from Germania’s own special recipe! To wash down these German delicacies, there are 50 plus taps of domestic draft and German imported beer, various bottled malt beverages, water and soft drinks as well. On Saturday there is a time for kinder (kids) to take part in games and a German costume contest from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. After 2p.m. each day, those under 21 must leave. There is free admission until 5 p.m. when a $5 cover charge applies and two forms of ID are required for those under 25 years old. The Volksfest takes place from Thursday, August 2nd through Saturday, August 4th from 11 a.m. to midnight. Get your Lederhosen, dirndl or ‘Kiss Me I’m German’ buttons and come enjoy the friendly atmosphere (gemuetlichkeit) and good time of an evening at the Germania Maennerchor Volksfest! —Wendelene Kluesner Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309 • July 2012

The Book & Music Exchange

For all of your indoor summer entertainment needs check out the Book and Music Exchange, located in Ross Center at 2409 Washington Avenue. The media paradise has something for everyone and with its organized, alphabetized system, good entertainment is easy to find. To beat the summer heat, why not curl up with your favorite controller, DVD player or book in the comfort of your air-conditioner? “We deal in books, music, movies, games, electronics, random collectables, action figures and a hodge-podge of other things. We even have weaponry

on display” said Manager Bri Baker. “Books bring people of all ages in. We have a large variety of novels, sci-fi, self-help and religious books. We even have one of the biggest Manga selections outside of new book stores available.” The staff goes through all re-sale items as thoroughly as they can. “We don’t put out anything that looks dirty. We clean everything to make it look as new as possible. We use toothpicks and toothbrushes. We also test everything to make sure it works before we put it out for sale. Nothing goes out on the floor with scratches,” said Baker. With their music items, they

always have great bulk specials. “The more you buy, the cheaper it is. There is always some kind of sale. If you come in one week and kind of like something and don’t purchase the item, odds are when you come back it will be on sale.” The B & M Exchange also has one of the largest selections of gaming systems in town. With so many stores, finding the game you need at a reasonable price is convenient for all tri-state gamers. “Our gaming systems are comparable in prices to most other game stores. Sometimes we are even cheaper. We also carry a lot of game accessories that others don’t carry anymore. You can find rock band accessories that no one else has anymore. We even have 3DO’s which was one of the first disc video game systems,” said Baker. “We also see a lot of products that people will purchase from other outlets and not like. We provide a way for them to sell the object to someone who wants it. Then we guarantee it. This way nothing looses value and the seller can upgrade to a newer system or a product they like. We have a lot of customers that will upgrade from the original. We don’t discriminate, because of age.” Baker added. Having a friendly, knowledgeable staff also makes going to the Book and Music Exchange worth it. “If we can’t find it, we will tell you where you can. I have even had people call me and tell me that they need help setting something up, that they didn’t even buy from us. We are all always willing to help you find what you are looking for.” —Brooklyn Solis The Book & Music Exchange has two locations in Evansville, at 2409 Washington Ave. and 628 E. ost people in this day in age take to the task of acquiring some sort of orthodoxy job that supplies a steady stream of insurance and benefits, 401k’s and paid vacations to secure their spot in the comforts of a middle class lifestyle. Whether the paycheck comes bi-weekly or the salary comes bi-monthly, the average woman and man seems to strive to gain a sense of security knowing what the next day will hold and when they will be able to go out and pay the bills. As you may already know, most is not quite synonymous with all. There is a select few who decide to throw conventionality to the wind and venture guns blazing, into a much more independent niche to make their way in the world. People like Nancy M. Richardson, who is the owner, delivery driver and over all master of southern Indiana highquality fish mongering. Her business The Fish Exchange is a shining example of just that. Nancy’s business is based out of Jasper, Indiana, which is the same place that it had its humble beginnings more than two decades ago, and where she calls home. Originally the product of her ex-husbands entrepreneurial endeavors 24 years ago; she was the one to take it over when he moved on to other business ventures. At the time of her becoming the company’s chief executive officer, it was mainly a frozen seafood vendor that went through other distributors facilitating the needs of a few restaurants desire to have frozen oysters, a few select fish, etc. With the business decisions now in her hands, she meshed her personal ideas with the existing clientele and began branching out to other restaurants. Nancy made the transition from Indianapolisbased frozen fish and seafood companies to the fresh fish markets of Louisville. “I figured if I was going to keep this business going, I may as well do right, you know?” said Richardson, in very matter of fact sort of way in reference to the switch. As anyone

cooking

The Fish Exchange

who has experienced the difference between fresh seafood and frozen can tell you, it is completely incomparable. “I’m just such a seafood fan that I wanted my product to reflect how I felt about it,” said Richardson. With the shift came a new word of mouth buzz that began spreading through the culinary scene in Evansville and the surrounding counties, as far away as Princeton. Whether it is a full service restaurant or an independent catering company, word spread that Mrs. Richardson was bringing back some of the freshest seafood that is available in this part of the country. As her clientele grew, so did her resolve to keep the business going. I asked her how she has been handling the wicked rise in gas prices, “I don’t really pay attention to it. I have never charged a delivery fee or really had a minimum purchase amount. I just make sure that ends justify the means,” said Richardson. For a business whose soul venture is to drive a near 300 mile loop to not have a road fee is practically unheard of. She keeps plugging along the road, selling fish and at the end of the day enjoys the profits and the satisfaction of providing the best quality product to fellow business owners. They are not unlike her, in the way that they also provide for the people who enjoy the finer things in life. —Chase Meneely

here is no doubt that Smitty’s is an establishment that is deeply rooted in the community of Evansville. It made its name as a tavern but it has recently taken a new direction as an Italian steakhouse. Smitty’s new chapter is backed by a simple, yet solid logic and is galvanized by family recipes passed down through the years. “The owner’s mother and daughterin-law had some family recipes which were passed to the hands of a chef in Nashville with a lot of experience in Italian cooking who took it upon himself to come to Evansville and personally teach our chef the recipes. We already had pizza, so we chose to follow a similar route, plus the west side didn’t have an Italian restaurant,” said Cindy Reitz, one of Smitty’s managers. As it is with any other restaurant that claims a specific genre of food Smitty’s has struggled with the assumption of their Italian food as being ‘authentic.’ As opposed to dressing it up and passing it off as something that it’s not, Smitty’s takes a straight-forward, fresh approach to an Italian American dining experience. “Everything is cooked to order, meaning nothing is left sitting for any length of time. Also, our wine list will not make you nervous; it contains quality wines to please all of the major tastes,” said Reitz. These two touches, the family recipes, along with the indoor rustic atmosphere and the intimate patio setting make for a dining experience that is magnifica.

One thing is for sure, I felt like Mussolini in his glory days as the extravagant spread of food was brought to my patio seat by Smitty’s mustachioed chef Romie Kimbrell. The first entrée I tried was at the recommendation of Smitty’s other manager and Cindy’s husband, Dave Reitz. It was the 12 ounce bone-in filet, a plump cut of beef that was incredibly tender and savory. The second was Smitty’s chicken champagne. A juicy chicken breast with a light bredding covered in a swiss cheese based cream sauce. It was very flavorful without coming off as over-powering. The third entrée was Smitty’s 20 ounce porterhouse steak which achieved a slightly smoky taste with an ideal texture. My personal favorite was the vesuvio potatoes. Cut in oblong halves, these potatoes came at me with a burst of seasoning but finished with a mild aftertaste. Then there was the spaghetti. It is a dish that every single Italian restaurant, steakhouse or what have you should have right. This dish really cemented the legitimacy of Smitty’s Italian Steakhouse for me. The noodles were a perfect texture, not rubbery and not too soft. The sauce was very much the same story. While some people prefer a weaker sauce or a more bold sauce, Smitty’s spaghetti sauce achieved the middle ground. The flavor was welcoming and substantial without blowing your socks off. Manager’s Dave and Cindy Reitz have high hopes for Smitty’s new persona. “We would like for it to be a place for special occasions, before an event at the Ford Center or for a nice family gathering.” —Nick Durcholz Smitty’s Italian Steakhouse is located at 2109 W. Franklin St. and is open at 3:30 p.m. Monday – Friday and at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

L

iving in the Midwest presents a few understated challenges for someone who wants to open and run a restaurant. A part of the country that is plagued by the droning statements of the skeptics --“I can’t stand the Midwest. There isn’t any place worth going and no food worth eating,”-- is seemingly blessed by the select few who find the beauty between fast food and franchises. Jacquie Schen was born in the British West Indies to Lebanese merchants and raised in a surprisingly multicultural area of Windsor, Ontario. She and her husband moved to southern Indiana because of his job and have been here for the past 40 years. “I love it here, this is my home,” said Schen. She dawns an appreciative smile as her arms motion outwards signaling that she means the entirety of her surroundings. In a refreshing twist, a woman who was born where the privileged take their vacations has a wonderfully positive outlook on the town. “If you don’t like it then move! Do something about it!” 15 years ago she decided to take the passion she garnered from years of being raised by a mother with a deep passion for food and use it to open her own business. “It was something that was dormant, waiting to pop,” said Schen. Speaking in reference to the ideas she had swirling around in her head about her possible dreams. Having an establishment on a riverfront is both a beautiful blessing and an exceedingly sketchy gamble. On one hand, your balconies and outside verandas will hold the some of the best views the area has to offer. On the opposite side of the unforgiving spectrum that is Mother Nature, it is also subject to forces beyond anyone’s control. 2011 marked a turbulent year in the history of Edgewater as deadly storms and floods preformed a vicious one-two punch on the outer cosmetics of the old building. Perseverance is a drastic understatement as she was opened 24 hours after a tornado ripped a hole in her roof, which undoubtedly speaks volumes for Mrs. Schen’s undying passion to keep her guests comfortable with a happy smile across their freshly stuffed faces. “I am happiest when my guests are happy,” said Schen. She answered very simply when I ask how she measured success.

Edgewater is in the early stages of revamping things about their business by creating daily and weekly specials. At the same time, they are gathering customer feedback as to what exactly should be placed in the soon to be Mediterranean section of the menu. Last Saturday marked the first day that they set about to sell their authentic Italian bread at the Newburgh Farmers market as a teaser for a bakery, La Veranda that they are opening across the street. They will also be hosting one of the best views for this year’s Fourth of July celebration and you can call ahead to reserve a spot for the entire evening. One resounding fact that kept surfacing during my time talking with Jacquie is that despite all the hardships facing an independent business owner, her main focus in life is to use her establishment humbly. To use it as a venue to instill a sense of community and happiness to anyone who walks through her front door. —Chase Meneely

G

ood old boy Trace Adkins will be illuminating the Aiken Theatre in The Centre songs of good times and bad times on July 27th. Trace Adkins is and has been a staple in country music for 15 years. He makes no apologies for being a ‘free-thinking roughneck.’ His debut album Dreaming Out Loud produced several hit singles including “Every Light in the House,” it also contained his first number one single “(This Ain’t) No Thinkin’ Thing,” and another top 5 hit entitled “I Left Something Turned on at Home.” From his humble beginnings in the small town called Sarepta, within Webster Parish in northern Louisiana, Mr. Adkins has made quite a name for himself not only in music but in television and movies as well.

It was his father who nurtured Trace’s musical interest by teaching him how to play guitar at an early age. His musical abilities were furthered in high school as he became part of a gospel music group called ‘The New Commitments.’ Afterwards, Trace went to Louisiana Tech University to study for a higher education. Eventually, he left the college life behind and began working on an oil rig. It was around this time when Trace suffered an injury that very well could have ended his life as a musician indefinitely. While opening a bucket with a knife, Trace severed his pinky finger from his left hand accidentally. In order to keep his ability to play guitar Trace asked the doctor’s to reattach the digit at an angle so that he would still be able to play. The surgery was a success. Fast forward to the last few years and one would find Trace Adkins to not only be on his saddle music-wise but also dipping the heels of his boots in acting, philanthropy and being an author. Trace has been in three major television shows including My Name is Earl, King of the Hill and NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice. Trace’s film repertoire includes 2011’s The Lincoln Lawyer and 2008’s An American Carol. More notably, are his various philanthropic contributions. According to Trace Adkin’s 2011 biography by Rob Simbeck, Trace has performed often for military personnel, including two tours through the Middle East with the USO, which has given him its Merit Award. He has taken part in an Extreme Makeover: Home Edition episode that rebuilt a home for a Dallas SWAT team member badly injured in a shooting. Trace raised threequarters of a million dollars for the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network and is a spokesman for the Wounded Warrior Project. Trace Adkins is without a doubt a highly decorated musician, his new album Proud to be Here boasts tracks intertwined with memories and emotions in his own life. But make no mistake, the Trace Adkins fans came to love is still alive and strong in this album with tunes like “It’s A Woman Thang,” “Love Buzz” and “It’s Who You Know.” —Nick Durcholz

Trace Adkins: Songs & Stories Tour will be Friday, July 27 at 8:00pm in The Centre’s Aiken Theatre. Tickets prices are $67, $47, $42 and $32.

I

love the contemporary style in Sara Rappee’s collections. Each piece is unique and sophisticated. Sara Rappee designs appeal to every woman. “By labeling me as a jewelry designer people understand that I’m the one designing the piece. Nothing beats the look on someone’s face when they say ‘you made EVERTHING in this piece!’” said Rappee. Sara has displayed her designs in the Evansville Museum, The Cahoon Museum of American Art (MA), The BowerSuhrheinrich Foundation Art Gallery and the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art. Sara is doing what she loves and does best: designing and handcrafting jewelry. After realizing what her lifelong passion was and with the prodding of family and friends, Sara decided to run with her dream and turn it into a career. Her jewelry aesthetic is reflective of three core elements found in her work; “Silver is the only metal I currently work in, wire Scrolls have become my trademark design feature and the stones… well the stones are how it all started. I was inspired by rocks! What cooler art form exists where you can create from the most elemental materials on this planet? It is so fulfilling working with your hands and watching these elements come together so beautifully. It’s magical,” said Rappee. News4U (N4U): How did you get your start in jewelry? Sara Rappee (SR): I’m largely a self-taught jewelry artist. When I was in college I took one of every course I could get my hands on. This included a jewelry course that taught a

localtalent Sara Rappee

variety of skills. At that time, I had no intention of pursuing jewelry as a career and over time I forgot most of what I was taught. Several years later I stumbled upon the Evansville Lapidary Society and learned ‘the art of polishing stones,’ it was then that my path became clear and I knew I needed to revisit those forgotten skill sets. A few books from the library and a few essential tools, and I was off learning my new craft. N4U: How do you get started in making a piece? SR: My process starts with the selecting, shaping, grinding and polishing of a stone. Seeing a unique pattern or bringing out the aesthetic values in each new rock is the cornerstone of my work. Each stone is traced in my sketch book and that outline is then used as a base for the flowing lines I draw around it. When the right design is chosen I use my drawing as an exact template to shape and form all the components. Wire is bent, filed and fit to shape then soldered in place using a torch. N4U: What can we expect to see from your handmade stone and silver jewelry in the future? SR: The future holds everything. My lifestyle is stuck in overdrive so I’m constantly designing fresh work and evolving as an artist. I take every day to its fullest and that means something different is always happening with me. The opportunity to appear in News 4U was the exact push I needed and I am proud to announce for the first time publicly the official launch of my website www.sararappeejewelry. com. This is an exciting step forward for me. You can keep up with all the new creations and art shows I display on my brand new website. My facebook page is Handmade Stone and Silver Jewelry. —Tamatha Lant

soundboard Phoenix Down

F

amiliar faces are seen in a new Evansville band, The Phoenix Down. The band’s name is a reference to the restorative properties contained in the down feathers of the mythical phoenix which will resurrect a fallen comrade. The Phoenix Down having risen from the ashes of former group Namaste, a veteran band of the Evansville area. Band members are Stephen Horning (guitar/vocals), Jordan Green (guitar/scifi), Andy Fulton (keys/effects/vocals), Zach Slingerland (drums), Dene Stephens (percussion/toys) and Mark Buschkill (bass). Songs written by Stephen Horning during the Namaste years have been and continue to be retro-fitted to the new group and fresh material is currently in production.

News4U (N4U): I notice band instruments such as “sci-fi”,

effects, toys…What kind of creative magic do these add to your sound? What styles influence the band? Phoenix Down (PD): It’s a way to describe what we do. Jordan and Andy experiment with various electronic devices on stage which give an electronic element but are combined with acoustic elements. Our band is influenced by far too many artists, and each band member has a broad respect for music. Prominent styles in our music include progressive and classic rock, reggae and electronica. That being said, the music is hard to label and truly must be experienced.

N4U: What will listeners hear in your lyrics and music? PD: The lyrics are meant to be uplifting/motivating or at least

relatable. They encompass life lessons and trials which shape the human spirit. The instrumental sections lend themselves to group improvisation and strive to exemplify what human minds are capable of when they allow themselves to unify toward a common goal. N4U: What can we expect to see from The Phoenix Down? PD: The band is working on finishing their first release, tentatively titled In The Wake, expected in fall of 2012.

It’s been proudly recorded at Stable Studios in Spencer, IN, which provides an atmosphere conducive to creative endeavors. It boasts beautiful festival grounds, outdoor & indoor venues and hosts live events which we will be performing at for a very long time. We look forward to sharing our new material with new fans and fans of the former band. N4U: What would be a dream gig for your band? PD: Any gig where there are fans who truly love what we try to do! —Lanea Stagg

The Phoenix Down’s upcoming shows are as follows: July 21 – Doc’s on Stringtown - Evansville (with The Vessel, from Louisville), August 4 – SickO-Fest Summer 2012 – Winslow, IN and September 14-16 - Hyperion Music Festival - Stable Studios, Winslow, IN. Ratings are given from 1-5. “5” is the best rating a reviewer can give, meaning they were very pleased with the beer and would strongly recommend it. “1” is the lowest rating a reviewer can give, meaning they did not enjoy the beer at all.

RIVERTOWN BLUEBERRY LAGER (Cincinnati, OH)

Christy Moore – 1 Slugworths at it again! Not only trying to steal those tasty little gobstoppers, but this is definitely a clone of Wonka’s fizzy lifting drink As Willy said “this one’s not quite ready.” Keep it away from a glass unless you like drinking foam. Golden in color and Heady like no other beer I have encountered. Nice aroma. Taste is interesting..like.. blueberry pop rocks and malty sprite.

RASCAL’S WILD RED (Baldwinsville, NY)

Christy Moore – 2 This is a crimson tide in a cup. A lager with very wine like characteristics. Starts off very fruit infused. The rasberry is extremly predominate at first and kind of fades shortly after. Personally not a big fan of a fruity booter when it comes to beer.

Jabez Martinez – 3.5

I am not a big fan of blueberry beers and this one was not very good. The carbonation was overbearing. I poured a small amount in my glass and it foamed over, very strange. For some reason this beer tasted like Fruity Pebbles which I love for breakfast but not for the taste of my beer.

I am not a big raspberry fan but since that is what the flavor of the beer is, I had to judge it for face value. I actually liked it. I could taste the raspberry but it didn’t hit you over the head with the flavor. It also had a wheat flavor to it with some spices added in. This is an 8% A.P.V. beer and I could tell. I couldn’t drink more than two of these because it is almost seemed like a dessert.

Todd Zachritz – 1.0

Todd Zachritz – 1.0

Jabez Martinez – 2.5

Ugh! This one immediately gets points off for being heavily over-carbonated. In fact, my glass overflowed with suds before I even got any actual beer. When it all settles down, the cloudy, golden beer smells like blueberry, which is as good as this one gets. Flavor-wise, I get hints of blueberries on top of an over-malted lager. Hops, where are you? The finish is weird and artificial. Sorry Rivertown, but this one’s a mess.

68 | July

2012 • www.News4UOnline.com

This raspberry lager pours a bright red with some scary pink carbonation and no lace. The aroma is an olfactory-pleasing raspberry, so not bad there. Taste? First, this isn’t beer in any way I can detect. I get a heavy-flavored soft drink with 8% alcohol. It’s super-sweet and artificialtasting, with no trace of hops or grain. Avoid this awful travesty and don’t look back.

WIDMER BROTHERS SHADDOCK IPA (Portland, OR)

Christy Moore – 1 After last months review Widmer is developing a reputation of letting me down. I feel like someone peed in my apple juice bottle. The pour fills out with a light golden color too which only lends credit to this hypothesis. The grape fruit aroma is pleasent but I feel serves as a siren-like lure to its rocky demise.

Jabez Martinez – 3.5

Personally, I am not a big IPA fan but I kind of liked this one. This is a clear, amber colored beer. It had the heavy hops flavor, but I could taste some coriander and some other spices also. It was also brewed with grapefruit peels which seemed a little different to me. The thing I liked the most was the nice malty flavor. The mix of all those tastes made it a pretty decent beer.

Todd Zachritz – 4.0

Brewed with grapefruit peels, this IPA pours a clean light amber, with a pleasant 2-finger head and neat loopy lace on the glass. The nose? I get, not surprisingly, bitter grapefruit, and the taste is quite similar. It’s dry, but even with the grapefruit infusion and the hops, Widmer have balanced this well with malts. I enjoyed this one the most of any this issue.

SAMUEL ADAMS PORCH ROCKER (Boston, MA)

a startling discovery... if you make a beverage that tastes good, people will drink it.

Jabez Martinez – 4

This is a golden colored beer with good carbonation. I could smell the scent of lemons and it was also in the flavor. It was not an overpowering flavor which was good. I could also taste some wheat flavor as well. The first wave of lemon flavored beers seemed to have way too much lemon flavor. I am glad that recently, the new beers have reduced the lemon flavor. Christy Moore – 4 Sam’s the Front-Runner in this months race in my opinion. The lemon adds character without trying to steal the show. Good presence of flavor with an appealing light gold appearence. With a mild citrus kiss to the nose. This beer stayed traditional with its makers full flavor, balance, complexity and consistent quality. I guess to maintain a status as an award winning juggernaut this industry someone at the top made

Todd Zachritz – 3.5

So the biggest American craft brewery enters the “shandy-stakes” with this lemon-accented lager, and it’s not bad. Upon pouring a clean golden, I get a nice and fine white head and some pleasing but thin lace. Nose is citrusy, but not overbearingly sweet. Flavor is well-balanced with the lemon being not so forward as in other similar brews I’ve had. Enjoyable.

Use them to impress your friends!

After consuming a bucket or two of vibrant brew they called aul, or ale, the Vikings would head fearlessly into battle, often without armor or even shirts. In fact, “berserk” means “bare shirt” in Norse, and eventually took on the meaning of their wild battles. The Budweiser Clydesdales weight up to 2,300 pounds and stand nearly 6 feet at the shoulder. 12 oz of a typical American pale lager actually has fewer calories than 2 percent milk or apple juice. A beer is NOT just a beer. All told, there are 27 different styles of beer, with a further breakdown of 49 substyles. Compiled from www.tobp.com

USI New Harmony Theatre

419 Tavern Street New Harmony, IN 812-682-3115 usi.edu/nht July 6-8, 13-15 – The Retreat from Moscow William Nicholson, the Oscarnominated screenwriter of Gladiator, has written a sensitive examination of an estranged couple in late middleage who attempt to begin fresh and separate lives but discover that a marriage of 33 years will not so readily release them to do so. Their struggle becomes a contest for sympathy and understanding from their 30 year-old son, who finds his parents behaving worse by the day. Rich in subtle humor and emotional truth, The Retreat From

Moscow earned a Tony nomination for best play on Broadway in 2004. July 20-22, 27-29 – Pete ‘N’ Keely This hilarious musical tells the story of Pete Bartel and Keely Stevens, one of America’s most loved singingperforming couples of the 50s, whose legendary breakup at Caesar’s Palace over Pete’s philandering led to less successful solo careers. But now it’s 1968, and Pete and Keely are “back together” to revive their careers in a live television special. Of course, singing together once again will require that they also speak to one another again. What transpires here is a wild series of segments both in front of the live audience and backstage. Will love conquer all? Or will it be like Casesar’s Palace all over again? When this wonderful show opened in New York in 2000, Rex Reed called it “Broadway in a bottle--the brightest, happiest, and most entertaining little show in town.”

o catch an exciting, competitive game of pigskin, you don’t have drive to Louisville, St. Louis or even Nashville. Footballs fans of Evansville can check out the semi-pro football team the Evansville Enforcers from the comfort of their home city. According to the Enforcers official website, the Evansville Enforcers are managed by the Evansville Semi-Pro Football Corporation, a Non-Profit Domestic Corporation in the State of Indiana. The Evansville Enforcers are entering our second season of existence on paper; however, our organization is managed by a leadership team with many years of “Championship Level” Semi-Professional Football experience through the various teams that have called Evansville home in the past. The Enforcers are honored to call the City of Evansville home. Their goal is a simple one. It centers on having a championship program both on and off of the field of play. Their organization through their games and activities is committed to raise awareness and funds in order to help other local non-profit organizations in the community of Evansville. They achieve this by providing a venue for many young adults in the Tri-State to continue their football careers as players, coaches or staff members. The Enforcers practice at Impact Practice Field on 720 Southeast 8th St. in Evansville and play their home games at F.J. Reitz High School on 350 Dreier Blvd. in Evansville. The Enforcers are a part of the B.C.S. minor football league and it is quite clear that they have a strong passion for what they do. Video Games

We are a little over halfway through 2012 and so far, it has been chock full of exciting, unique games and the hack and slash, class clown Lollipop Chainsaw continues that trend. This game would be the outcome if you cross-pollinated Evil Dead with Dawson’s Creek and then added a small injection of Hello Kitty. It is truly a combination that defies the laws of nature but it makes for one extremely entertaining gaming experience. The player embodies Juliet Starling, a cheerleader at San Romero High School who is a part of a family of zombie hunters. Juliet wakes up on the morn of her 18th birthday beaming about meeting her boyfriend Nick in the local park. She arrives at school only to find it and the entire town has been overrun by the undead. Juliet fights off swarms of zombies with fluid acrobatic combos using a massive, bedazzled chainsaw. In the course of the game each of her two siblings and her parents give her birthday gifts that add to her arsenal. Shocked? I was, but the good news is that this game does not take itself too seriously. There is a constant stream of crude and sarcastic humor with a healthy sprinkling of pop culture satire. For example, Juliet rescues a classmate and after she collects her coin reward the would-be victim says, “Juliet, I’m totally going to send you a friend request later.” The game includes elements of third person shooters, arcade fighters and even puzzle solving. It has a little bit for everyone and despite a few character hang ups in some parts of the environment, it is an eviscerating good time with high replay value. Lollipop Chainsaw is destined to become a cult classic, with its comic book inspired graphics, iridescent gore and rainbows; what more could you ask for? Really short skirts on unnaturally good looking women? Yeah, it has that too. —Nick Durcholz The ESRB has rated this game ‘M’ for Mature due to Blood and Gore, Drug References, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes and Strong Language. ew Harmony Theatre continues its edgy 25th season this month with William Nicholson’s The Retreat from Moscow. This summer’s selection is focused on plays from this past decade, and this second production of the season, filling the drama category, was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play in 2004. After more than thirty years of marriage, a couple tries to separate and begin fresh new lives. They discover, though, that their lives are more tightly entwined than they’d realized, and their 30-year-old son finds himself suspended between their increasingly bad behavior as each parent vies for his sympathy and support. “This production tells the story that a lot of people live through,” says Elliot Wasserman, Producing Artistic Director of New Harmony Theatre and Chair of the Department of Performing Arts at USI, who will also direct this production. “If you’re married, it makes you realize how much more married you can be, how much better married… It’s a play that draws people together.” Also, be sure to catch Pete N’ Keely July 20th-22nd and 27th-29th —S. This sends him on a collision course with Dr. Curt Connors, his father’s former partner and Connor’s alterego, The Lizard. Parker is wanted by police, revealing his past and making life-altering choices to use his powers. See how Spiderman started. A lot of people are asking, ‘Why tell nearly the same story as Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spiderman?’ The hope is that this 3D reboot will be as different and original for Spiderman as ‘Batman Begins’ was for the Batman franchise. Warner Bros. Pictures Set eight years after Batman took the fall for Two Face’s crimes, a new terrorist leader has taken over Gotham city. Bane; formerly a member of the League of Shadows, he was cast out for being too extreme. Bane sets to unleash his wrath on the world. Batman now faces a city in ruins that sees him as an enemy and an ultimate super-villain. Batman must rise… or will he? This is the final chapter in The Dark Knight legend. It is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The film stars Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Anne Hathaway and Tom Hardy. —Jae Mills

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance Columbia Pictures

It is business as usual in the world of the ghost rider. The movie is shabby dialogue with CG action sequences and baddies with big guns. In the down time between the live action scenes a short animated sequence plays giving the viewer some type of background into the past of the rider. These are helpful but sometimes painfully cheesy. On the upside, the rider does mount a five story tall coal drive and turns it into a grinding hell-beast, as well as swallowing bullets then regurgitating the hot lead right into the face of an attacker.

Warner Brothers

This is very much a version 2.0 if there ever was one. Even without the third dimensional new wave technology, the cinematography was still carried over to my 1998 Toshiba box of a television captivatingly well. I was honestly expecting the Downey Jr. typecast of a cheeky British-man getting into all sorts of shenanigans, which is exactly what is was, but it is a refreshing twist of solid acting, excellent period costume design and set construction, coupled with a deep socio-psychological villainous back-plot. The film has more depth than I have seen from any recent action/mystery, provided a completely solid flick.

A Little Bit of Heaven Millennium Entertainment

Thin Ice

ATO Pictures This movie is clever but it slow to get into. The first half of the movie is full of clichés and it is not until the second half of the movie that the tedium and stereotypes are there for a reason. The acting is quality, same for the dialogue but I found myself wanting more in the way the moving was shot. If you can make it through the dreary moments mainly in the beginning of the movie, there are a series of twists and turns in the end that make the film worth watching. —Nick Durcholz

A Little Bit of Heaven is… well, certainly a bit of an over statement. The story is decently written in the way that communism sounds good on paper. I apologize, I may be a little bit jaded, but I feel as though the entire genre of ‘Romantic Dramedy’ is based around a bingo type wheel and the plots are selected with 4-7 potential outcomes. This is just a theory mind you. The acting is C- at best, with an overtly cheesy musical score that somehow lets you know exactly what is going to happen next. —Chase Meneely

An Interview with

Michael Barber

I

t is always a humbling experience to have an opportunity that you half-jokingly dreamed of when you were young, only to have it blossom into a beautiful reality less than a decade later. Michael Barber, an Evansville native, took the time to explain to me what it was like to be a graduate of Christ the King Catholic School, then to transition into working with one of the most prolific hip-hop labels in the world: Death Row.

News4U (N4U): When did you decide, ‘Alright, this is what I want to do?’ Michael Barber (MB): I was always a writer, since I was really young - with poetry and things like that, and my mother played the piano, so I was always inspired by her. But I really got into hip-hop when I was like 16, I started free-styling. I had a good buddy Emilio, who taught me how to freestyle. We started doing battles and little things like that, and gradually it just sort of got the point where I was writing songs. I started recording over other peoples’ beats, and I always liked writing rap songs to rocks beats. It was really kind of weird but I always listened to rock music you know? I really feel like since I was a little I had always been a writer but after I turned 16, things just kept evolving and finally I realized this is what I want to do. My family was so supportive that they said, ‘Listen if this is what you want to do, don’t make it just a hobby.’ They were like, ‘Go for it.’ N4U: Was there one moment, or one person that you got to work with, that made you realize you had chosen the right path?

MB: Well, right now just getting to work with the Wide Awake/

Death Row team and getting ready to put out this album with Audio Stepchild on it in collaboration with that team, it’s like… to be able to grow up and listen Snoop, Tupac and Dre and then being able to turn around and put out an album that has the same logo; I mean come on man, it was giant! It was amazing; you just don’t think that kind of thing can happen. I mean I am working with Nappy Roots on it as well; they are so humble and such cool guys. I’m just a kid from Evansville, and here I come with an album from Death Row. That alone has just blown me away. N4U: I know this is a pretty tricky question, but has there been a defining moment in your career? Where you felt that all of your hard work had culminated into a sense of success? MB: It’s been a long, strange trip just going through everything I have gone through and to finally come out on the other side with this; my work on Death Row, and my song “Another Sofa Bed” getting airplay. It’s just been a really fun process, especially with my family behind me. But it’s almost like we do it and keep moving so you never stop to say, ‘’you know what we are doing here?’ and we should because everyone I work with has done so much, but we just keep moving forward. It’s just so fun to be able to do music for a living.” —Chase Meneely Michael Barber is based out of Cocoa Beach, Florida. The album Audio Stepchild Three is set to release in August featuring the single Another Sofa bed alongside Nappy Roots. Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309 • July 2012

local band spotlight

Chowder Monkey

About the Band: Chowder Monkey is a rock trio based in Evansville and we play anything from Classic Rock to 80’s Pop to Johnny Cash and a rockin’ version of Long Haired Country Boy. Allen Tate plays drums, Chris Keck plays guitar and Dustin Jones plays bass

What they Cover: We’re always messing around with different songs and bringing something new to every show but the stuff you’ll always hear in our set list are tunes from KISS, Judas Priest, Tommy Tutone, Tom Petty, AC/DC, Poison and Steppenwolf. Their Influences: Dustin: My number one influence is Les Claypool but I’m also into Cliff Burton, Michael Star and Will Lee. Chris: Top five that come most readily to mind are Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Nirvana and Tool. Allen: My all time favorite band is KISS. All three KISS drummers are a major influence to me as well as Tommy Lee. Peter Cetera is very much a vocal influence. Where you can catch their performances: V.F.W. on Pollack Ave. in Evansville. Go to http://www.chowdermonkey. com/ to find out when and where we’re playing next!

Bert Jansch

Sweet Sweet Music (Secret Records) If you’re a fan of acoustic guitar and have never heard of Scottish guitar legend Jansch, who passed away in 2011 at the age of 67, do yourself a favor and investigate. Heralded by legends like Neil Young, Jimmy Page and Johnny Marr, Jansch was often called the “Jimi Hendrix of the folk world.” His intricate, delicate and emotive finger-picking style was a huge influence on the aforementioned, as well as folkies like Nick Drake, Donovan and later artists like Mazzy Star or Devendra Banhart. Sweet Sweet Music is a well-recorded live performance from 2006 with Jansch accompanying himself in front of an appreciative crowd in Sheffield, England. Tracks like “Blues Run The Game” are heartfelt, gentle and warm. Everything here sounds downright contemporary and somehow, very English. While this may not be the finest introduction to Jansch’s wonderful and lively music, it is a beautiful document nonetheless. —Todd Zachritz

The Cult

Choice Of Weapon (Cooking Vinyl) It’s been some years (5 to be precise) since we heard from the Cult and this set of tunes may be the best showing since their 1989 breakthrough Sonic Temple. The first single, “For the Animals” is a catchy hard rock tune but it is cuts like the opener, “Amnesia,” that really shine. Billy Duffy’s guitars here harken back to the band’s psychedelic acidrock days and Ian Astbury’s finally confident vocals summon both Jim Morrison and British heavy metal equally. “Embers” is another standout. It is a dramatic and bluesy ballad that fits in well with the Cult’s legacy and widely-varied back catalogue. Maybe the presence of producer Bob Rock (who worked with the band in it’s heyday) is a factor in this rejuvenation. Suffice to say, “Choice Of Weapon” is the best assimilation of the band’s heyday (think Love and their more metallic Sonic Temple as a reference point.) At last, an album that fans of any Cult era can appreciate equally. Rock solid, boys. —Todd Zachritz

Tellitron

Not A Nightmare Just A Bad Dream (http://www.myspace.com/tellitron)

The Dirty Heads

Evansville native Thomas Ellis’ solo project Tellitron has been active for a number of years, he is even playing some live gigs in Illinois. Nonetheless, Not A Nightmare is the first I’ve heard and it’s a sturdy set of 9 well-composed songs. Tellitron’s energetic rock/electronic hybrid echoes dark 80’s post-punk icons like Peter Murphy or early Ministry with plenty of live instrumentation and a proto-synthpop vibe. The dramatic and propulsive “A Reunion (To End All Reunions)” opens and is certainly a highlight; as is “Loyalty to the Band” which wrestles its anthemic melody into your head with startling ease. “10:22” is a darkened and claustrophobic post-punk mantra that could almost be Public Image meets Bauhaus. The remaining tracks also harken back with eighties stylings, yet never lapse fully into a ‘retro’ category. Surprisingly developed songwriting, solid production and a lot of fun to listen to, Tellitron’s grooves are both accessible and edgy. —Todd Zachritz

“Cabin by the Sea” (EMG)

What happens when you throw the rhythmic styling’s of a pseudo-dub inspired reggae five piece with the cool delivery of a hip hop lyricist? Then, add some California pop and sunshine that’s peppered ever so sweetly with punk licks and a cloud of smoke into a blender, and turn it on puree? You will be able to pour yourself a refreshing glass of The Dirty Heads. Coming off the success of the single “Lay Me Down,” Cabin by the Sea is sure to provide the anyone a smile on their face and a calm in their souls.

The Hague

Hangmen

East Of Western (Acetate Records)

“Black Rabbit” (Self-Released)

Now counting former Supersuckers guitarist Ron Heathman amongst their ranks, this Los Angeles quartet raises the bar with East Of Western. Opening with the driving freight train garage punk of “Homesick Blues,” the band moves swiftly into the Gun Cub-styled swamp blues of “I’m Your Man.” “Had A Girl” is a rough-and-tumble ballad that works too. In fact, this whole album is made up of all expertly paced rockers with the ideal amount of grit and dirt. Yet, it has enough melody and spark to remain interesting and accessible. It is a grand album from a band at their peak. —Todd Zachritz

Ufomammut

Black Rabbit is an ambient lullaby of an album. The soothing melodies and peaceful measures evoke a sense of serenity that wasn’t found without a troubling journey beforehand. It is the sort of feeling of success that only comes through certain trials and tribulations, bringing it all together into a complete picture. Pop syncopation, coupled with the haunting wails of a violin make this a great album for easy listening fans.

The Skavengers

Oro: Opus Primum (Neurot Recordings) This veteran Italian group has been garnering some notice these days and with good reason. Now signed to the esteemed Neurot Recordings label, Ufomammut’s 6th album opens with the epic “Empireum.” It is a 13-minute slab of mammoth instrumental riff that’s equal parts down-tuned stoner metal and evil post-Sunn drone. “Aureum” is even heavier with spacey electronic elements complimenting the crushing guitars and sparse drumming. Think SWANS meets Hawkwind. “Infearnatural” slow-churns in the style of Neurosis. It is sludgy, slow and grinding. Other cuts like the mantric “Magickon,” echo this direction. Ufomammut are a crushingly heavy act, focused on low and slow assaults and Oro is a massive juggernaut of seething power. I’m impressed. —Todd Zachritz

“Self-Titled” (Self-Released)

You always had those friends in high school that had bought their own second hand musical equipment from yards sales and pawn shops with the high fledged dreams of not caring whether you like what they are playing or not. In the same token, The Skavengers put together all the songs they have spent their career forming into one complete album of what they see as their version of fun actually being. —Chase Meneely

The Victory Theatre Presents: Shinedown, Adelita’s Way and In This Moment in downtown Evansville.

T

he Victory Theatre will be shaking in its historic foundation this month as Shinedown, Adelita’s Way and In This Moment play downtown Evansville. Shinedown is a fearsome foursome from Jacksonville, Fla. Its members include Barry Kerch on drums, Brent Smith on lead vocals, Zach Meyers on guitar and Eric Bass on bass guitar. Shinedown first album Leave a Whisper in 2003 made major waves in the world of hard rock with such singles as “Fly from the Inside,” “Burning Bright,” “.45,” and a cover of the Lynard Skynard original “Simple Man.” It was the acoustic version of the cover that really pushed the band into the spotlight. Shinedown’s second album Us and Them released in 2005 which yielded the singles “Save Me,” “I Dare You,” and “Heroes.” However, the third album The Sound of Madness seems to be the band’s most meaningful album of all. According to Shinedown’s official website, Smith and company began the recording process for The Sound of Madness with the formidable task of following up two massively successful albums that yielded a staggering seven consecutive top five rock and alternative radio hits. Although, it is after one listen, that it’s clear the band didn’t shrink from the task. Where The Sound of Madness differs most is in its growth; it’s the product of a group that has developed an even clearer vision

for how it wanted to impact an audience. Shinedown has hit the road this summer with Adelita’s Way and In the Moment to promote their senior effort Amaryllis that was released in March. The first single of the album is “Bully.” The latest single from the new album “Unity” is an uplifting track presented with an inspirational video in which

a young girl walks city streets with a camera taking pictures of all the people she sees then proceeds to attach them to a wall in a collage that forms a large picture of two hands clasped together.

Shinedown’s touring partner Adelita’s Way has had their fair share of success in the hard rock world as well. The band is made up of Rick DeJesus on lead vocals, Keith Wallen on rhythm guitar, Robert Zakaryan on lead guitar, Derek Johnston on bass guitar and Trevor Stafford on the drums. The band’s self-titled debut album was released in 2009 and featured the singles “Invincible” and “Last Stand.” Their sophomore effort and most recent release is titled Home School Valedictorian which boasts their smash hit “Sick” as well as “Criticize” and “The Collapse.” The third band that will be joining Shinedown is In This Moment, a quintet from North Hollywood comprised of Maria Brink, Chris Howorth, Travis Johnson, Tom Hane and Randy Weitzel. Their sound is similar to that of Evanescence with a more harsh and aggressive tone. July is a big month for hard and heavy music in Evansville. If you are a fan of either you won’t want to miss this show! —Nick Durcholz

The tour will make a stop at the Victory Theatre on July 16 at 7:00pm. Accompanying Shinedown on tour will be supporting bands Adelitas Way and In This Moment. Tickets go on-sale to the general public on Friday June 8 at 10:00am. Seats are $42.70. Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309 • July 2012

T

he marginal music fan has probably heard the blues. In the contemporary world we livein, many of us think we sing the blues. And to others, the only blues music they’ve heard is while watching the infamous Blues Brothers movie of the early 1980’s. Many tri-state music lovers may not know that the area has been turning quite “blue” over the past year. The River Basin Blues Society’s mission statement is quite simple: introduce blues music, the history and culture of the blues to anyone who will listen. Member Dale Niehaus says that blues music runs much deeper, and binds us with the common thread of music. “I think playing the blues is like giving a history lesson to people. It is important to remember the roots of primitive music and rhythms that are responsible for all modern music. I think blues music gets closest to the original basic beats and chants of our ancient ancestors,” said Niehaus.

The River Basin Blues Society

Niehaus goes on to say, “Almost all blues music derives from rhythms, chants and songs from Africa, Jamaica, Haiti and other countries brought to North America by slaves. The ‘call and response’ blues songs were work songs used in the fields to make the work a little easier to bear. Of course, being part Native American, I consider North American indian chants and songs to be forms of blues too.” Niehaus said he received his introduction to blues music at a young age. He received his first guitar at the ripe age of five and began playing seriously at age 12. He says he began by teaching himself chords and actually playing along with his mother’s old ‘78 blues records. (For those too young to remember, that’s vinyl.) When performing in the various local venues that support blues music, Niehaus says the motivation to play runs deep within himself. “When I play, I get lost in the beat and vibe of the song. It’s hypnotic. I play with my eyes closed a lot, it helps me concentrate to become part of the music. How zen!” “I like to make songs my own, not exact copies. I think people like this better but as an entertainer, I still like to interact with the audience and try to make them part of the show. This is why we do a lot of jams to allow individuals who do not play in a band to join in,” said Niehaus. The River Basin Blues Society prides themselves with putting on workshops for young, aspiring blues musicians and sets up blues ‘festivals’ to help support local businesses and venues. One such “mini-fest” is set for July 4th. “We are planning more events this year. [Also], a poker run benefit this fall, and since we are accredited by the National Blues Foundation, we will be having local competitions to send a band and a single/duet to the International Blues Competition.” —Joel Easton The River Basin Blues Society is always accepting applications for new members. Fast forward through other festivities and bourbon consumption, and arrive at the Barnstable Brown Derby Gala. Barnstable is considered the premiere Derby party. I interviewed Guy Fieri, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Shaffer Ce Ce Peniston, University of Kentucky Basketball Coach John Calipari and other stars. My favorite question is always, “Do you like Bourbon?” and “What is your favorite cocktail or adult beverage?” “Of course I love bourbon. Do you think I am going to say anything else in Kentucky?” responds Paul Shaffer. From Barnstable Brown, the BourbonBlog.com team went to Ferdinand’s Ball hosted by Beverly Hills Housewife Brandi Glanville. The last stop for the night is at the Maxim party where Audrey, Guy Fieri and a number of celebrities are ending the evening at the Mellwood Arts & Entertainment Center. An Intimate Evening with James Taylor and His Band To this day Taylor has won five Grammy Awards, sold over fifty million albums - thirteen of which are U.S. Billboard Top Ten, achieved five U.S. Billboard Top Ten singles and was inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in the year 2000. His latest project for his fans, personal video guitar lessons, can be found on his official website www.jamestaylor.com/guitarlessons. Taylor’s influence on his fellow recording artists span the past 40 years, and will continue to inspire both musicians and fans of relatable, heartfelt songwriting and tunes that feel like an old friend. —Julie Buente

F

or over four decades James Taylor has set the standard for the art of songwriting on a personal level that speaks to generations of fans young and old. His unmistakably smooth baritone (although some would call it a warm honey tenor) voice and unique celloinfluenced style of guitar playing have kept him steadily on the music charts since 1970, making him one of the most recognized artists of all time in the forefront of the folk rock genre. On July 11th the people of Evansville will have a chance to spend an intimate evening with the iconic American singer/ songwriter at the Ford Center. Over Taylor’s impressively long music career, he’s collaborated with the incredible talents of Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, David Crosby, Alison Krauss, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt and Art Garfunkel, among many others. His big break came in 1970 with his first top 10 single “Fire and Rain” off his second album, Sweet Baby James. Taylor’s success from that well-known single soared with the cover of Carole King’s classic “You’ve got a Friend”, which became a number one hit in the summer of 1971. It’s hard to turn on the radio and not hear a James Taylor song at some point in the rotation on any classic rock, pop, folk or contemporary station. Some other recognizable songs in Taylor’s catalogue include “Country Road,” “Something In the Way She Moves,” (said to have inspired George Harrison’s romantic song “Something” on The Beatle’s Abbey Road album) “Carolina In My Mind,” “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight,” “Your Smiling Face,” “Mexico,” “Steamroller” and “Copperline.” His ability to cover songs and make them his own is one of Taylor’s trademarks, this is evidenced by his top 40 hit of Marvin Gaye’s “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You),” two entire albums from 2008 and 2009 were devoted solely to cover songs, and my personal favorite – the hauntingly beautiful cover of The Louvin Brothers “How’s The World Treating You” with Alison Krauss.

Evansville native plays Joseph in Theatre Partnership Production

L

andon Scholar started to take singing seriously at the tender age of six. “I really got into Elvis, and would do impressions. I have been doing Elvis ever since,” says Scholar, a junior studying musical performance at the University of Evansville. An Evansville native and graduate of North High School, Scholar started performing theatre with a small group of friends, and he fell in love. He says in high school he ditched sports for theatre. His first Evansville Civic Theatre was Forever Plaid, Plaid Tidings when he was a junior in high school. Evansville Civic Theatre Director Chris Tyner encouraged him to audition, and he got the part. “The funny thing about that role is it is the same role Chris played when he was my age at Civic Theatre…and it was like being in the shadows of my director,” said Scholar. Tyner directs him again this month in Lincoln Amphitheatre’s and Evansville Civic Theatre’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Scholar plays the lead role as Joseph. Scholar says getting into character for the role of Joseph has been an interesting transition to learn how to convey emotions with a production that is all music without dialogue. In his preparation for the role, he says he wanted to “dig deeper” and go back to the Book of Genesis to read the story of Joseph, and think about how he would feel in certain situations. “I changed my opinion of Joseph just from that. Being familiar with the story before, I never knew his emotions, I never knew what he may be thinking… he went through so much,” said Scholar. Scholar performs at Lincoln Amphitheatre in Lincoln Amphitheatre’s and Evansville Civic Theatre’s partnership of Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat July 20th through August 4th, Wednesday through Saturday evenings beginning at 7:30 p.m. CDT and one matinee on Sunday, August 5th at 2 p.m. CDT. An optional meal service is available at an additional cost for guests who make reservations at least seven days in advance. —Brandi Weyer For more information about tickets, visit www.LincolnAmphitheatre.org or call 800-264-4223.
