Beyond the Realm:
Paranormal Investigators
Beyond the Realm Paranormal Society (BRPS) bridges the gap between life and death in the weathered town of Evansville, IN.
T
he non-profit organization investigates suspected paranormal activity in residences, businesses and forgotten buildings; traveling anywhere within a 100 mile radius of its headquarters. The four year old company is now on its 468th case. Despite the surging requests for their esteemed expertise, BRPS won’t see just anyone. Potential clients can expect to undergo a background check, and will need to provide multiple witnesses to ensure the case’s urgency. Their team is prepared to stay on a case from a few weeks to a few years. As a whole, the company keeps in mind a few goals; to understand the origins of the haunting, to explain the activity to the resident and to stay with them for emotional and “spiritual” support until the client is ready to go back to their normal routine. I spoke with Danny Owens, founder of BRPS and paranormal adventurer of over 15 years, to gain further insight:
News4U (N4U): What kind of tools do you use in the investigation? What kind of staff is required to be on-board? Danny Owens (DO): I believe that the best tools are my team. We as people can pick up on emotions better than some kind of device. However, we use digital recorders to do EVP (electronic voice phenomena.) We also have I.R. cameras (infrared), [and] EMF detectors to measure the amount of electromagnetic fields around the home or business. 6 | October

N4U: Have any paranormal occurrences “followed” you or any of your staff into their normal lives after being on a case?
DO: Yes! When we do an investigation we always do a prayer
before starting, and also after the case to ask that nothing will follow us home. However, some things do follow us home. They attack our loved ones. Some have very dark dreams and strange feelings of [being] lost or alone. This is hard on us as a team that does this regularly, but we do have safeguards in place to keep this from happening.
N4U: Is there a strong philosophy about death that influences the business and those that are a part of it?
DO: No, each person has their own reason [to] search for what
is unanswered in their own life. We set out to prove that life sometimes does occur after death. But I don’t think I can say it influences us to do what we do. We do what we do to help the families that are living with this on a daily basis; the ones that have gone to their church and found no help, [the ones] that have gone to their doctors to be put on pills to stop the haunting. The truth is that it’s not in their head, it’s in their house. They feel that they have no one to turn to and that they are alone and that the world has shut its door on them. This is what influences us to do what we do. And yes, to learn the truth of what is really out there and what is not. —Jacqueline Greenberg

o who likes clean, readily available drinking water? I’m willing to bet that literally everyone does. Water For People’s mission is to help people in developing countries improve their quality of life by supporting the development of locally sustainable drinking water resources, sanitation facilities and implementing health and hygiene education programs. On Thursday, October 11th the people of Evansville and the surrounding tri-state area will have a chance to support this great cause. The 7th Annual Water For People concert is scheduled at the Victory Theatre here in Downtown Evansville. “Approximately 6,000 people die daily of water borne diseases and they are mostly babies and small children. The Water for People program is a passion of mine because it works to provide safe drinking water to developing countries,” said Duane Gilles, Distribution Manager for the Evansville Water Utility in Evansville.
Headliners The Devonshires will bring a fun evening of 60’s and 70’s music. The Devonshire’s have been entertaining audiences in cities and towns across the country for decades and have performed with numerous rock legends such as Joe Cocker, Jefferson Airplane, The Doobie Brothers, Eddie Money, The Edgar Winter Group, Badfinger, Paul Revere and the Raiders and The Temptations. The opening act will be Kaptain Krunch and the Cereal Killers, a young, local band that plays music from the 70’s to the present. Tickets to the live concert event are $15 in advance and $20 at the door, and are available at all Schnucks Supermarkets, Old National Banks, Donut Bank locations, First Federal Savings Banks in Evansville, Home Building Savings Bank locations, Don’s and Clayton’s Cleaners. Doors will open at 6 p.m. with a cash wine/beer bar and concessions. his October, the Victory Theatre will hold two presentations of Vectren’s Pops Series: Classical Mystery Tour: A Tribute to the Beatles, featuring the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. The show will mark the 45th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band. The traveling Beatles re-enactors have visited Evansville in 2007 and 2009, and are making their third round back to the river city on their 2012 tour. Similar to a touring Broadway production, the cast has altered over the years, and has featured original members of Beatlemania and other performing look-a-likes. The Philharmonic Orchestra is excited to welcome this traveling show, and will take part in its accompaniment. Maestro Alfred Savia will assist in some of the final production touches, and will conduct the orchestra during the show. Audience members can expect to hear a huge range of Beatles classics, including “Penny Lane,” “Yesterday,” “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” “When I’m 64,” “A Day in the Life” and many more. The Beatles command a voice of an entire generation and because of this their music will be immortalized. This performance is ideal for any Beatles fan to bask in a pool of good memories or for a younger generation to be exposed to timeless tunes of love, pain, loss and elation. The Victory has a main floor and balcony sections, with 1,803 seats. Tickets start at $26. Ticket buyers are encouraged to purchase season tickets for extra savings. The two shows will take place Saturday October 20th at 7 p.m., and Sunday, October 21st at 2 p.m. This Beatle’s tribute show will open up The Victory Theatre’s Pop Season, which will run until spring 2013. March of Dimes Signature Chef Auction 2012
W
hen I think of the March of Dimes I get pulls on my heartstrings. It’s an organization very near and dear to me, since my son was premature and I know quite a few women who’ve had their babies before they were full term. According to the March of Dimes website, more than half a million babies are born premature in the United States each year, with a 36% increase in early births over the last 25 years. Babies born too soon face a greater risk of lifelong disabilities and health problems that can greatly cost families both financially and emotionally. The March of Dimes mission is to help mothers have fullterm births and to research the problems and complications that threaten the health of babies born premature. They also offer comfort and support to families with premature babies in the NICU, or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It is a service I still appreciate to this day after going through the stress and scare of having a premature baby and needing to know that there was hope and options ahead for my baby. The March of Dimes is a tremendous organization that deserves every bit of support from every community. November is Prematurity Awareness Month and to help kick that off and spread awareness the March of Dimes here in Evansville will be holding their 2012 Signature Chefs Auction on Thursday, November 1st. For the past 15 years, the best chefs in Southwest Indiana have come together and prepared a signature dish for attendees to enjoy while socializing and
networking with others, and browsing and bidding during the silent auction. The exciting live auction caps-off the evening with unique epicurean experiences and items that always bring the crowd to life with bidding competitions. The 2012 Evansville Signature Chefs Auction has a new venue: The Scottish Rite in Downtown Evansville, but the cause remains the same, working together for stronger, healthier babies. The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with complementary champagne, and the chefs will be serving their specially prepared tastings. The first of two silent auctions will also begin around that time. The Grey L ady Ghost Tours Today, the Grey Lady is the most famed and lusted-after phantom in the state of Indiana.
W
ho is the ghost of the Grey Lady? Is she Louise Carpenter, the raging daughter of Willard Library founder Willard Carpenter, moaning through the halls after being left out of her father’s will? Perhaps she is a woman without a name, who holds deep reverence to the ground that the library was first built on. Is she an apparition, a projection of our own fears, an angel? These questions may have been replaced only with “run,” by the custodian who first spotted the Grey Lady looming above the library furnace in 1937. After experiencing several more sightings, he quit his job. Against the sounds of scoffing and chuckles from die-hard skeptics, he left with a warning- that the ghost in the Willard Library was very, very real. Today, the Grey Lady is the most famed and lusted-after phantom in the state of Indiana. Even though the last official spotting was in August of 2010, people passing through the grounds still experience other phenomena. Books have been found strewn about a room that had just been cleaned, chairs have been scattered in a room with no occupants and brand new batteries have failed instantly. I must mention the potent, ever-lingering smell of a certain lady’s perfume that occasionally graces the halls. Greg Hagard, Director of the Willard Library, has heard distinct footsteps trudging past the Bayard Room when he was the only one on that floor. “However, old buildings do funny things and make funny noises,” Hagard adds quickly. And so it goes with “haunted” abodes. Its occupants loom back and forth between finding

assured windows into the beyond and endlessly questioning the accuracy of their senses and suspicions. For the amassing amount of paranormal groups in the country, this dance between real and fabled is not enough. Televised investigators from Syfy, Fox, Travel Channel and Discovery Channel have visited Evansville for an overnight stay in Indiana’s oldest public library. Each year, the Willard Library receives about 60 requests from organizations wanting to start their own investigation. Yet the library is still a functioning community center, and cannot go on indefinitely surrounded by yellow tape. Therefore, only two groups are permitted into the library per year, usually during October. Currently, the booking for these exclusive stays is backed up through 2030. If 18 years of waiting comes off as a bit of a stretch, the library’s website features six “ghost cams” that are viewable at the public’s convenience 24/7. At 19 million views per year, this fraction of the site offers a library guide and photo galleries for those wanting to dip their smallest toe into the Willard’s secrets. Like many of you, I itch to see and feel the spookiness for myself. So, this October, I’ll be in line for one of The Grey Lady Ghost Tours. Appropriate for all ages, the tour explains the library’s haunted history under the guidance of a library worker. eading into the holiday season, a question can arise as to where to purchase your food staples for your upcoming meals. A number of factors may weigh into your decision including price, convenience and whether or not a store is locally owned and operated. To answer all of those questions though, you have to look no further than Farm Boy Food Services. Farm Boy Food Service has a long history in this area. They can trace their roots back to 1952, when the company was founded as Mahon-Bonenberger packing company, a complete meat-packing business. Their operations at the time included cattle and hog slaughtering, and the meats produced were packaged and sold to retail stores under the “Farm Boy” label. Company co-founder John Bonenberger became sole owner of the business in 1965; however, one year later, he passed away after a sudden illness. It was then that John’s 22 year old son Robert assumed management of the company, along with Robert’s 17 year old brother Richard. Moving forward after their father’s passing, the company name was changed to “Farm Boy,” which already was widely recognized because of the meats sold under that label in retail stores. In 1975, Farm Boy ended its slaughtering operations, but continued- as it does today- to process and cure meat products. In 1982, Farm Boy became the Code label distributer in Southern Indiana. With this relationship, Farm Boy quickly grew as it began product distribution, with a strong emphasis on the pizza industry. The Code group eventually became UniPro, the largest food co-op in the United States. Having the largest food co-op in the U.S. in our own backyard may sound daunting for the average shopper, but purchasing from Farm Boy is simple. All you have to do is simply come to their office located at 2761 N. Kentucky Avenue and place your order. Farm Boy opened its cash and carry store, Farm Boy Food Mart as an extension of their warehouse. Most products there are broken down into smaller quantities, which make personal shopping easy and affordable. They also allow regular customers that do not own a restaurant to shop their warehouse as well. The warehouse sells in full case quantities though, but all you have to do is come in the office and place the order. They will process the order for you, and then you drive around to the back to the receiving area to pick up your products. Evansville has many Mexican and Hispanic restaurants, so when I visit one for the first time,

magine a restaurant that reads into your childhood, scans your family life and is able to conform to its atmosphere and menu to cradle you in ultimate comfort while simultaneously lulling you into pure nostalgia. Mary and Martha’s Tea Room is not quite so celestial but it is a very real place that can offer you the familiarity of home with fresh, made from scratch meals that will thrust you back into your youth. Make no mistake, the dishes cooked up at Mary and Martha’s appeal to palates young and old, refined and simple. “We like to treat everyone like family, better than we treat ourselves from the moment they walk in the door,” said Ava Demps, Executive Chef/ Co-Owner of Mary and Martha’s Tea Room. “Mary and Martha were sisters of Lazarus and good friends of Jesus and whenever he was in town he would come to their house to relax and eat with them and commune with them. So, Jesus could come to Mary and Martha’s-Lazarus’s house-when he was tired and needed to chill, so to speak, and have a good meal. We want people to be able to have that same experience, to feel as if they are amongst family and friends.” The source of Mary and Martha’s domestic appeal is that its management commands well over a hundred years of collective commercial cooking experience galvanized by family recipes and Southern hospitality. Demps’s family, as well as her partner Kim’s has the roots of the south intertwined with their heartstrings.
“We love to serve people; we love to cook good food, we love to entertain. So that’s just within us,” said Demps. Even in the midst of an Amazonian downpour, when I sat down to eat at Mary and Martha’s Tea Room I felt a peace I only get sitting in my grandmother’s dining room. The feeling of peace was uncanny. The first plate laid before me was Mary & Martha’s signature chicken salad sandwich. It was flavorful and light with a very accessible texture. The creaminess of the chicken salad was perfectly complimented by the melted provolone cheese on the top of the sandwich. The plate that was soon to follow was the roasted vegetable salad with balsamic vinegarette. It hit my taste buds as a community of flavors all working together. There was savory feta cheese, faint sweetness of bell peppers, a slight smokiness from the roasting and an earthy flavor remaining in the background. All these flavors were framed by the tang of the balsamic vinegarette. Last but not least was the pecan pie. This pie is every taste of the holiday in a circular capsule. It is rich but not over powering and it is difficult to decide if the crust or that pie tastes better. Mary and Martha’s like their roasted veggie salad, has a taste for everyone. They boast vegan options and will be offering a full A La Carte Thanksgiving menu for the holidays. For a down home lunch, the only stop is Mary and Martha’s Tea Room. —Nick Durcholz

Walls joined the Riverside team after moving to Evansville from Des Moines, IA. He shares, “Making people happy through food [and] to see a guest leave happy is what fuels my passion for this business.” For the lunch crowd, Weflen’s top picks are either the hot brown or the shrimp po’boy. The hot brown is especially popular because not only is it a traditional favorite for this area, it also offers an open-faced option that eats like a meal. For those visiting for dinner, Weflen highly recommends the BBQ ribs. Riverside Cookery’s ribs are slow smoked barbequed Cajun spiced ribs that are slathered with a special barbeque sauce and served with creamy coleslaw. Walls recommends the bacon wrapped BBQ shrimp, the fried green tomatoes and the Beale Street sampler. The timing isn’t what makes the restaurant so special, though. It’s Casino Aztar Executive Chef James Weflen and Kitchen Manager Nicholas Walls that bring to this restaurant a unique style of cooking with everything from BBQ to home-style, comfort foods. Weflen became a part of the Aztar staff after moving to Evansville from Rock Falls, IL, which is about 40 miles north of Peoria, IL. He has been formally trained at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and he has 20 years’ experience in the food service industry. In terms of driving force, Weflen shares, “[It’s] simple… I love to cook. Food is memorable, and dining is an experience.” He also adds, “I love the small town feel with the larger city benefits – great restaurants, outdoor activities, and central location among larger cities – and it is closer to the location of my family.” Casino Aztar’s other restaurants offer a wide variety of dining options, from steaks at Cavanaughs, to buffet style dining at Temptations Buffet, or hand crafted burgers at Max and Erma’s. Icemen
The Icemen have returned for a new season of stick clashing, ice spraying and knuckles to the dome excitement.
In the 2012-2013 season, fans will see the return of many
of their favorite players from the previous year and they are in it for the long shot. The Icemen are a part of the ECHL, or East Coast Hockey League, a premier ‘AA’ league which was originally formed when five teams disbanded from the All-American Hockey league in 1988. Those five original teams have grown to 23 as of this season. The league will be celebrating its 25th anniversary this season. The Icemen will again be lead into the frigid fray by Head Coach Rick Kromm who was born in British Columbia and was drafted to the NHL in 1982. Kromm played left wing for the Calgary Flames and the New York Islanders. He left the NHL in 1993 and got his first gig as a head coach in 1998 with the Muskegon Fury where he lead the team to as 50-18-6 regular season record (the best record in the league.) He stayed with the Fury until 2001. Six years later he began coaching the Portland Winter Hawks. Kromm was made head coach of the Icemen in 2010. Some of the returning players from last season include 30 year old brick house, Mark Cody at left wing. Lead scorer and MVP, Todd Robinson will be once again donning the white and blue of the Icemen as centerman. Robinson has been such a vital asset to the team last season was coined ‘Robinsonian.’ The team’s all-star defenseman Matt Gens will also be returning for the 2012-2013 season. Another name on the return list is left wing Josh Beaulieu. One may question what the Icemen bring to the city of Evansville or even how the game of hockey itself benefits our city and its surrounding area. While there is no simple answer, a

couple things are for sure. The Icemen are an entity the people of Evansville can really get behind and support. Just like any other sports team, one may not be a fan of the sport itself but the Icemen give fans and casual onlookers alike a sense of strong community and local pride. In a more concrete sense the Icemen bring in visitors from all over the country, people who play for, work for or cheer for the visiting team who ultimately mingle financially, socially and culturally with Evansville. Personally, the greatest aspect the game of hockey and the Icemen have to offer that they give the city something new and unique. The game of hockey can be graceful, technical and brutal at the same, something not a lot of sports can claim and the Icemen excel at displaying this. Because hockey demands so many different athletic abilities, it appeals to a large number of people. Whether a patron goes for the animalistic, territorial skirmishes, the agile and precise skating or the dexterous puck maneuvering and shooting that person will be excited and intrigued. Fans and casual onlookers alike will see a couple of fresh names and fresh skills on the ice as well. One of these new names is Jesse Perrin, a 25 year old defenseman from Alberta, Canada about to enter his fourth pro season formerly of the Arizona Sundogs. With the Sundogs he accumulated 14 points in 60 games through three goals, 11 assists with 40-PIM. Another new name is Tyler Shelast, a 27 year old right wing from British Columbia, Canada about to enter his sixth pro season. Formerly of several different teams for a short period of time, his talent shone brightest two seasons ago when Shelast played for the Quad City Mallards. A third new name on the ice for the 20122013 season is Peter Skoggard, a 24 year old goalie from Lulea,
Sweden who will be entering his third pro season. Formerly of the Augusta Riverhawks of the SPHL (Southern Professional Hockey League) he racked up a record of 20(12-5-3) with a 2.65 GAA and .906 SPCT over two years. Some fresh news for the season is on tap as well. Recently, the Icemen have become affiliated with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Icemen will benefit tremendously from their new partnership with the NHL team. In this partnership, the Icemen will be able to sharper and mature the skills of talented players who will then be able to migrate to the Columbus Blue Jacket program. On top of that exciting news The Icemen recently won the Evansville Courier & Press Read Choice Award for Best Local Sporting Event. For any cold-to-the-core Icemen fans that are not already aware, the Icemen make appearances at businesses and charitable organizations all over the city. Keep an ear out and check their website for 2012-2013 appearances. At the end of the last season, the Evansville Icemen maintained an at home record of 31(20-10-1) 102-86 with a field goal score of 33(26-4-3) and an outshoot opportunities of 24(19-5-0.) Their away record was 29(18-8-3) 93-81 with 27(12-14-1) field goal opportunities and 32(17-11-4) outshoot opportunities. Hockey in itself isn’t the most well practiced or known sport in the area. So, if any fan or casual onlooker by chance becomes intrigued or interested in learning the game there are options locally for them to do just that. In September, the EYHA or Evansville Youth Hockey Organization, offered the G.O.A.L.

t’s 2012 folks, and it’s so easy to register to vote these days. The easiest way, of course, is to register to vote online by visiting www. indianavoters.com. All you’ll need is a valid Indiana driver’s license or Indiana state-issued identification card. You can register to vote there as a new user, or update an existing voter registration record. For those of you boycotting computers, and I don’t blame you, you can register to vote or update your current registration by mail or in person. You can find the Voter Registration Form and can apply at the voter registration, county clerk’s office, any BMV license branch or public assistance office. Once you’ve applied, the county will determine your eligibility and send you a voter registration acknowledgement card. Make sure if you’re planning on registering to vote in the November 6, 2012 election, that you do so online or postmark on or before October 9, 2012. If you haven’t received your voter registration card within about 30 days of applying, or just want to check status or polling location, call your county voter registration office or 1-866-IN-1-VOTE. If you are contemplating staying out of this year’s election, you may consider all the individuals who have given the ultimate sacrifice to give you the ability to vote and to allow democracy to keep our country in check. —Ben Clark

hat do inflatables, hot chocolate, a chili cook-off; lots of candy and a Bloodmobile have in common: this year’s Catalyst Church Trunk or Treat community event! The event is free of charge and open to the public. It starts in the church parking lot at 5 p.m. with the fun officially ending at 7 p.m. Parking will be Fall Festival-style but you won’t be purchasing any tickets here. You can however, grab a chili cook-off ticket, try all of the great local chili recipes and cast your vote for the winner. After getting some of those good chili nutrients in your bloodstream, feel free to share that miracle by donating it in the aptly themed Red Cross Bloodmobile. Don’t worry about the kids though; they’ll be just fine with a shot of hot chocolate and taking their turns on the bounce house with slide and bungee run. Oh, and did we mention there’ll be candy – lots of candy? Catalyst Church members will have their vehicle trunks packed with candy and will be all-too-excited to receive trick-ortreaters. YMCA Half Marathon
E
vansville’s growing populace of marathon fanatics should be pumped to learn about the 9th Annual Evansville Half Marathon, taking place October 7th. Conveniently taking place the day after the Fall Festival ends, this run is open to any and all who complete the registration process. Participants will be allotted four and a half hours to complete the 13.1 mile course, trekking over primarily flat land. The marathon will weave through city landmarks such as Reitz Hill, the Pigeon Creek Greenway, Garvin Park, Bosse Field, Downtown Main Street, Bayard Park and will conclude on the Riverfront. Aid stations with medical assistance will be planted every 1.5 miles along the route. Many groups have begun training long before the fall season, including Vectren’s open “Team 13” training group, who have been meeting together since early July. Special hotel room discounts for out-oftown runners will be available through multiple Evansville establishments, including Holiday Inn Express, Comfort Inn, Hilton Garden Inn and others. The Evansville Half Marathon is the final run in a series of marathons put on by the YMCA since late summer, including the 5k, 10k and 15k warm-up runs of September. The last days for late registration are Friday, October 5th, and Saturday, October 6th. At 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, the Kids Half Marathon will take off, running parallel to the Fall Festival’s closing day. On Sunday, October 7th, the full marathon festivities will begin. Casino Aztar Wins Big
C
asino Aztar, the downtown superplaza of nightlife and gaming, is expanding on their recent regional recognition and awards. Southern Gaming and Destinations Magazine has granted the casino with three of their 2012 “Best of” Awards for Nightlife, Casino Floor and Poker Room. The busy club routinely offers an array of competitive card tournaments scattered throughout the month. For the less spontaneous, the casino features acclaimed and local musicians in their showrooms and dining areas, at no extra cost. The Evansville Courier & Press has also concluded their 2012 reader’s choice awards, with over 160,000 accumulated votes. Casino Aztar walked away with their prestigious dining establishments stealing the heart of the awards. MercyMe with

M
ercyMe will bring their brand of sweeping and uplifting inspirational rock to the First Christian Church in Evansville. The band released their debut album Almost There in 2001, which included their smash hit “I Can Only Imagine.” This is easily the band’s most recognized single but it wasn’t until three years after the album was released that the song broke into the charts. The song’s light spirit, smooth composition and romantic lyrics have made it a staple in wedding venues all over the country. Soon after, MercyMe released their sophomore effort Spoken For, which features the single “Word of God Speak.” Later that year, guitarist Barry Graul formerly of the band Whitecross joined MercyMe and was able to add texture and depth to the band’s third release Undone. The album was released in 2004 and featured tracks such as “Homesick,” “In the Blink of an Eye” and “Here with Me.” From 2005 to 2011, MercyMe continued to strike the rock, and from it music flowed. In this time span they released seven albums including a Christmas album and an acoustic album. The band is five months off the release of their newest album The Hurt & The Healer. They are polished, mature and as spiritual as ever. or many, Halloween is a once a year event. For some, it’s a month long ritual of excitement that overwhelms us as soon as Autumn’s breeze hits the nostrils, and images fill our minds of transformations into whatever we fantasize to be. Kevin Alvey is the founder and owner of Gore Galore, the leading manufacturer of oversized costumes, haunted house and attraction props. Gore Galore was established in 1998 but is based on over 35 years of experience in haunted attractions and events planning. Alvey has been haunting since he was 15 years old. For Alvey, the on-goings and glamour of what for us is just a seasonal happening, is a part of everyday life. Unlike many that have wrote about this compendium of talented artists and fabricators led by Mr. Gore himself, I have the privilege of reporting from a somewhat better vantage point. I have gone to many trade shows as an honorary member of his team and had the unique experience of viewing this operation from the inside. In this experience, I must say when you run with this group; it makes you feel like a superstar.

Aside from getting to just stand in awe at these creations, one task bestowed upon me has been to pilot these costume/puppet hybrids around and show them off, and let me tell you any onlooker you come in contact with doesn’t ‘look on’ any longer! It’s all eyes on you. Certainly, in a day and age when people are becoming more callused and hard to impress, why wouldn’t you want to invest in a product that adds such a ‘WOW!’ factor that stands out with its monolithic towering stature? He started building props and doing scenic design for www.zombiefarm.net and to this day, contributes many resources to this notable organization. Longevity is one of the factors that led to its continued success. You know that their methods are not only tried and true, but continuously expanded upon with know-how beyond blind ambition, which in itself guarantees quality. I for one am proud of the fact that a company that has such deep roots in my favorite holiday. It also has become a world renowned name that encompasses all that are these 31 witching days that never seem to linger long enough on the calendar. The best part is that it found its beginning in the heart of our humble city. Though they outgrew the confines of their original downtown dwelling, they still remain close to where we make our home and continue to thrive here. With the expansion of the shop this year and production in full swing, by the time this issue hits the presses they will be nearing completion of 2012’s orders. Once this year’s orders are filled, Alvey will again move towards the daunting task of outdoing himself and adding to the amazing product line of Gore Galore’s current catalog. —Xach Lively

F
or the past week, my phone has been blowing up on the hour. Emails between The Moccasins’ Aaron Mauck and I seem to have gotten carried away in an infinite game of smart phone tag. It takes a few days of this to prepare for the actual interview. He’s messaging me in between bartending; I’m skimming through his email while searching for my shoes, already running late for my second job. It’s a laborious process for the both of us, but am I irritated? Surprised? Absolutely not. Musicians, writers, singers and artists of all breeds learn early-on that the heaving dance between practicality and creativity carve astronomical holes in
the comfort of routine. To this, I am doubtless The Moccasins would plainly agree. The tri-state natives compose a fresh band of four in the Evansville area. Andrae Stevens (drums) and Caleb Marquis (lead guitar) are both born and raised locals, while Victor Birkle (bass) is from Posey County and Aaron Mauck (vox/guitar) hails from Boonville. The men have been working tirelessly for two and a half years to put out their debut record, and those years have been filled with the usual inflated hopes and sharp let downs. They’ve managed to stick it out long enough to put together some rad album art, set up a record release party and debut their own website with a free download of their new single. Titled “Rainy Autumn Walk Downtown,” Aaron croons with a melancholy air, in harmony with the band’s simple acoustic bellows. Mauck’s inspiration from Stephen Stills, Ryan Adams and Jeff Tweedy has culminated in a clear and recognizable sound that delicately shares his warmth and simplicity. With an album called “Weathered Faces,” I could only guess the current mental state of the long-trying band. Since the idea of putting together a record first came up, “It seems like we’ve aged five years in that time!” said Mauck. With an open touring schedule, the band is looking forward to celebrating their new release by hitting college towns and local venues as quickly as possible. And, believe it or not, Mauck feels Evansville is the place to be for a struggling musician. “I hear a lot of people saying you can’t do anything in Evansville,” he says. “[But] where else in the country could you gig in St. Louis on a Friday, sleep in your own bed that night, wake up to your own brewed coffee and then gig in Cincinnati on Saturday? Or Louisville, Nashville, Indianapolis?” The band will continue to use this bleeding optimism in the hopes of giving birth to their ultimate goal- ditching the day job for the glamorous life of the rock star. Ghost Walks
I
t is a bleak fall night on the pastoral streets of downtown Newburgh. Brief clips of youthful, mischievous laughter meander by the ear like mountain mist, dead leaves tumble and jive in a silent Lindy Hop across the pavement and the mystical becomes palpable. It is one of three nights in October that Historic Downtown Newburgh offers an environment and an experience that is ideal for any spook-seeker out there. While it may not have the immediacy or shock value of a traditional haunted house, the Ghost Walks chill the blood and make the hair on the back of your neck rise to attention. The patron may choose between one of two routes, the Water Street tour or the State Street tour. No matter what route is chosen, both are filled with tales of tragedy, mystery and deceit based on actually people and events. Patrons are guided along these routes by a narrator who gives basic information about destinations, adds a disturbing fact or two and interjects a bit of humor. The meat of the stories is told by a group of volunteers who dress true to the era (1840-1900) and act out their tales with appropriate diction and body language, according to the assumed or recorded personality of their character. One said destination is the Durgin House, home to a musically inclined family around 1865. One of the two son’s in the family married a showboat performer who was known as Miss Hattie. She lived life in Newburgh as a songbird perpetually locked in a cage, always yearning for a life of travel and singing. Her restless spirit lingers in the home.

Another destination is the Stokes Garwood House, home to a blacksmith apprentice who migrated to the area in 1847. Stokes started a wagon making and blacksmith shop with his brother in 1852, married and fathered six children. In 1865 he became Master of the Newburgh Masonic Lodge and 16 years later it was reported that he accidentally shot himself. However, later documents were discovered unveiling a much more ghastly demise. His troubled soul lingers in the home. Yet another destination is 1 Madison Street, where patrons will chance upon the story of a great tragedy involving the Steamboat Missouri. The captain of the vessel was thought to be racing another steamboat by the mouth of the Green River, close to Newburgh and had previously decided to purposefully hinder his boat’s safety equipment to make it go faster. His reckless actions resulted in the

boat’s boiler exploding and the loss of at least 60 lives, including his own wife. Her essence lingers where the Green River meets the Ohio. The ghost walks will run October 19th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., October 20th from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and October 21st from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The tours will begin at Preservation Hall in Newburgh and will depart every 15 minutes. Each tour lasts about an hour and patrons are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes. As an added scare, patrons can pay an extra $2 to hear 20 minutes of scary stories told by the Rivertown Storytellers at the Old Locks and Dam on Saturday night only. —Nick Durcholz For more information please visit www.historicnewburgh.org.

his year marks 30 years of Anheuser-Busch’s efforts to promote responsible drinking and prevent underage drinking and drunk driving. To help mark the occasion and encourage even more American adults who choose to drink to do so responsibly, Working Distributors and Anheuser-Busch are asking adults to join their employees in taking a pledge at www. NationOfResponsibleDrinkers.com. We’re joining Anheuser-Busch employees and A-B distributors nationwide to canvass retail accounts with this alcohol responsibility message. We’re also encouraging adult beer drinkers to get involved by taking the Nation of Responsible Drinkers pledge. Christy Moore • 4 Very dark has the coffee black color from the get go. The vanilla and java presence are well blended into this brew. Personally I have to have my coffee in the morning to get started and French vanilla creamer is a must. So already two things I like in one place. And though I doubt it will replace my morning cup of Joe during deadline week I may reconsider. Good stuff!

Christy Moore • 1 Is this a brawler from gangs of New York sporting a terrific lip rug on the label or a hall of fame base ball player from days of old? Let’s crack it open and see. Light golden pour, oh god no they used my love of the mega-stache against me, very bitter low blow. The hops poison hit my tongue and for a second I thought it was pure lemon juice rind squeezings. Sorry number 12 no home run here.

This was a dark, black beer with decent head. I could smell the coffee and the sweet smell of vanilla when I opened it. The vanilla was the prominent flavor but I could also taste the coffee and malts. It is on the lighter side of the dark beers. I wish it had a more intense flavor. It was okay but I yearn for more. I guess I was looking for a little more character.
I was glad to see an Indianapolis beer in the bunch this month but I am not an IPA fan. This beer had the standard heavy hops flavor with some citrus and pine. It also had another flavor I had a hard time figuring out. I could only say it has hints of onion or garlic but it was hard to tell. It was not unpleasant but just a flavor in the beer that was hard to describe and put my finger on. Not a bad beer and actually pretty good as far as IPAs go. .

This brew definitely boasts the brackish chocolate brown of traditional porters. The smell of this brew is out of a Swedish chocolate shop. It is one part mocha with one part cocoa making two parts heaven. I was worried the coffee flavor would be too much here but the bitterness is mild and the flavor is striking. I’m not much of a coffee fan but this brew is ideal for fall and a solid porter.

The hoppy odor that comes off this brew is so pronounced it smells like gym socks that have been bunched up in a dark corned marinating in their own juices for three days. The color is cloudy amber but the initial taste is very smooth. The aftertaste is simply ghastly, there is a mildew aroma that lingers in the nasal cavity. While I am not an IPA fan there are some that I do enjoy. That being said this IPA tastes like someone boiled old grass clippings, added some yellow and orange food coloring to them and made a tea. Absolutely dreadful.

Widmer Brothers Brewing OKTO Festival Ale

I wish I could go off my physic prowess and not have to taste another Widmer beer, but here it goes, oh yep there it is. The pour is transparent, goldish brown and very heady. Signature bitter hoppy presence, yeah, same ole brothers, no new trick or treats.

A clear, amber beer with some hops and caramel in the aroma, and some fruits added in. It has a medium hops flavor and some caramel but also finished with the fruit flavors. It was crisp unlike other Oktoberfest style beers that linger on the tongue.

Every aspect of this brew is mediocre at best. I have really tried to give these Widmer Brothers beers a chance but each new one that comes along is just as dull as the last. The smell is weak and dank. The taste is diluted and sour. The only aspect that is slightly appealing is the color which is a vibrant rust hue. This beer is stagnant and has as much personality as a two by four. It is an embarrassment to all other Oktoberfest brews out there.

This beer had a light, grainy flavor to it which I liked. I am a big Goose Island fan but I consider this one average for them.

I’ll leave you with the dignity of a one for at least letting it be known on the bottle to expect the bitter but I swear Nick needs to stop using the beer review as a vehicle to satisfy his love for these bitter beverages and get some more good stuff in. ”

This is a deep amber beer with a nice aroma. It has a light, fruity flavor but I would also consider this a light IPA.
The smell of this brew is its strength, traces of pumpkin, wilted corn husks and the subtlety of a flat fall breeze. The color is tawny much like the leaves of the season. The taste is the most complex of this beer’s attributes. It starts out mild, with a slight sweetness and then gets bolder with every pull. While it gets stronger an earthy, bitter taste blooms but it isn’t overwhelming. Harvest Ale is a season in a bottle.

He was the composer of songs such as “Banana Boat Song (Day O)” and “Jump the Line.” Belafonte has worked with world leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., President John F. Kennedy and Nelson Mandela. He also was behind the 1985 “We Are the World” project to aid people affected by war, drought and famine in Africa. October 27-31 – Frights Nights Laser Light Shows They’ll be playing some spooky music and lighting up the dome with some fun graphics during our laser light shows. United Way Songwriting Contest Winner:
Roxie Randle
R
oxie Randle’s original song “United” has been chosen by the United Way of Southern Indiana to be used for their promotions during 2013. Randle impressed the panel of judges by beating out several hopefuls. “United,” was judged on criteria including originality, lyrics and how well the song conveyed the mission of United Way. The song was also to focus on inspiration, hope and strength. Randle was announced the winner September 7th, during the United Way’s Day of Caring. Randle credits her musical talent to her upbringing in a musical family. According to her website, her family supported her musical growth by exposing her to a wide variety of musical genres. Some of her fondest musical memories involved playing piano and singing along to older country songs with her grandfather. She was involved with the church choir, and as she grew so did her musical taste. She is inspired

by female pop vocalists, indie artists and southern rock. A native of a farming community in Eastern Illinois, currently residing in Nashville, she books regular gigs across the midwest while promoting her album Little Victories. October 13 – Science for Parents with School-Age Children Parents can sometimes be overwhelmed when children can come home with some strange science questions or the need to build something for a science project. Former science teacher and Museum Science Experiences Specialist Jim Price will touch on the basics of some of the major concepts in chemistry, everyday physics, earth science and the fundamentals of magnets and electricity so that parents can be prepared to help their children with their science homework. We will be doing hands-on experiments that can be taken home and applied to your child’s science classroom experiences. This class is recommended for parents with children in upper elementary to middle school. This workshop starts at 10:30 a.m. It is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. October 21 – Chemistry Day Ever wonder how chemicals react? Why do some things go bang when you combine them and others do seemingly nothing? From simple to complex, chemical reactions play an important role in our daily life. Join us Sunday, October 21 when we present our annual CHEMISTRY DAY in cooperation with the University of Southern Indiana. An observance of
National Chemistry Week, Chemistry Day occurs each autumn. On October 5 - 6, race weekend, registration will be $70. (Half Marathoners interested in participating in the two warm up runs can do so for $75 if registration is received by July 26 or $90 after). Entry fee is not tax deductible and is non-refundable. There will be no race day registration. The event will begin at 7 a.m.

Creative genius Tim Burton brings us a great big-hearted tale about a boy and his dog, with an undead twist. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor Frankenstein decides death doesn’t have to be the end. He secretly- with the help of thousands of volts of electricity- brings his dog back to life. When the townspeople discover Victor’s secret, they all want their lost animals back too. Everyone soon discovers that having a new leash on life comes with monstrous side effects. It’s being said that Frankenweenie includes some of the most unusual, interesting and sympathetic characters Tim Burton has ever created. The film is a stop-motion animated film and rendered in 3D. “Taking a lifeless puppet and bringing it back to life really mirrors the Frankenstein story,” says Burton. The Frankenweenie voice cast includes four actors who worked with Burton on previous films: Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands,) Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice,The Nightmare Before Christmas,) Martin Short (Mars Attacks!,) and Martin Landau (Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow,) along with Charlie Tahan as Victor Frankenstein.

The film has one of the most anticipated directorial pairings of 2012, the Wachowski Siblings with German auteur Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run.) It is adapted from David Mitchell’s novel of the same name. The movie stars Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Susan Sarandon, Hugh Grant, Ben Whishaw, James D’Arcy, Keith David, Doona Bae and Jim Broadbent. Afraid of committing 124 minutes to this story? Don’t be. It’s a hilariously authentic romantic comedy that only barely falls short of becoming a classic. The entire cast performs brilliantly but not overdramatically – well, maybe a few of them. The tale starts off when verging sous chef Tom (Jason Segel) and studying psychologist Voilet (Emily Blunt) become engaged. Soon after, family developments and career choices intervene with best laid plans. The couple is quickly uprooted from sunny San Francisco, only to land in frigid Michigan. Violet’s career catapults, as Tom and his culinary career sinks into deer jerky blues. You know things are getting bad when Violet’s emotionally unstable sister Suzie (Alison Brie) and her abhorrently immature husband Alex (Chris Pratt) visit, and their relationship is comparatively rock solid. Shortly after, when Tom unknowingly fails one of Violet’s psychology experiments, it’s the beginning of the end. Whether or not the film’s ending is happy or sad will depend on your place in life, but you won’t be able to deny the funfactor. It’s clever, it’s real and it’s way more fun than a stale box of donuts. If you’re in the mood for a fresh take on rom-com don’t wait to take this vehicle for a ride!
What to Expect When You’re Expecting Lionsgate
It’s difficult to empathize with TV fitness guru Jules (Cameron Diaz) and her partner Evan (Michael Morrison.) She’s filthy rich, famous, bossy and never establishes that she really needs anything at all. There was an opportunity to get on board with the apparently thriving businesses of rival food vendors, Rosie (Anna Kendrick) and Marco (Chace Crawford,) but the only recipe was frustration. Another couple you’re apparently supposed to care about is Ramsey (Dennis Quaid) and the much younger Skyler (Brooklyn Decker,) but they’re even more filthy rich with even fewer issues. In an overly convenient plot, Ramsey and Skyler are father and step-mother of Gary (Ben Falcone) and his wife Wendy (Elizabeth Banks,) who become pregnant within 24 hours of each other. Last, but certainly not least, ill-prepared Holly (Jennifer Lopez) and Alex (Rodrigo Santoro) are looking to adopt. Despite great performances by Elizabeth Banks and Jennifer Lopez, the film barely scrapes by because in the end, who doesn’t love cuddly, newborn babies? There is a little comic relief during frequent distractions by the “Dudes Group,” which agreeably includes Chris Rock. We’ve been together since 2005. We’ve toured the U.S. more times than we can count. We’ve released more records than we can count. We’re gearing up to release our 3rd full length LP in the fall, titled Artless, which was engineered by Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket, Coliseum, etc.) You can download 4 songs from the record for free at bemydoppelganger1.bandcamp. com. We’re an all original band. Basically, it’s loud, guitar-based music heavy on melody. A lot of people call it pop punk, but I don’t think we fit very neatly into that box. It’s always changing too, so it’s hard for us to classify. Their influences:
Lots of 90’s alt/indie rock, earlier punk rock, power pop, garage and psych. The Poppy Family and Marilyn Manson. Where you can catch their performances:
We really don’t play locally a whole lot, unfortunately. I’d say 75% or more of our shows are out of town. But if we do play an Evansville show, it’s usually at Lanhuck’s or TJ’s Stockyard Inn. These days, during Punk Rock Night. The PRN shows are always a sweaty, chaotic mess of fun, put on once a month by local legend, Mark Meat.
Dustin Lynch
Self-Titled Broken Bow Records 3 out of 5 According to Dustin Lynch’s fawning press release, this country boy is going places. “Cowboys and Angels,” the first single off his self-titled debut recently earned the honor of #1 CMT ringtone and is racking up digital downloads as I write this. Sure enough, Dustin ticks all the boxes that determine success on the country charts. He has a deep, resonant baritone (check), brooding, photogenic looks (check) and a set of non-confrontational nostalgic tunes that appeal to every demographic (triple check.) Things start promising enough with the frivolous rocker “She Cranks My Tractor,” not only the best song on the album, but a guaranteed live favorite, complete with an addictive chorus that most certainly increases beer sales at each concert. Unfortunately, the pace never quite fully picks up again, as the rest of the set settles back into a comfortable groove with harmless songs about girls like “Sittin’ Pretty” and “Rock You Sweet.” Even the potentially wild “Unwind It” fails to generate any noticeable excitement, despite Dustin’s assurance that he’s getting his ‘chill on.’ From the formulaic songwriting to the ultra-clean production, Dustin Lynch is destined to rule the country charts. But a bit more rock and less calculation would do his music wonders.

5 kinds of rain Go On Liron Music 3 out of 5 It was inevitable that once the last few bratty, noisy, sloppy notes of the grunge era receded into semi-obscurity that a distortion backlash would drive everyone and their brother to pick up an acoustic guitar. This heralded a lengthy new era of sensitive singer-songwriters. With a musical resume that includes the 2007 award for best Oregon singer-songwriter, Justin Jude continues the trend of acoustic cleansing made popular by the likes of David Gray. Jude’s latest release, the aptly titled 5 Kinds of Rain, is a soundtrack for staring out the window on a gloomy day while pondering life, death, love and loss. In fact, the EP appears designed to accomplish one of two things: 1) Put

the listener into a coma while his or her parents are left behind to foot the extensive hospital bill. And 2) Inspire the listener to carpe diem and propose a life-long union with a lost love while his or her parents foot the wedding bill. Either way, the potential financial impact of this EP on your family cannot be overstated. All kidding aside, Justin Jude is a highly talented if not highly original songwriter with a killer falsetto.

Second Coming Wikid Style Records 4 out of 5 Having struggled for a number of years to bring both the creative and the production sides of the band in unison, local rap act WSM (Wikid Style Music) is at long last primed to unleash Second Coming, the consolidation of much passion and hard work. All three members of WSM (mastermind and producer J.J., along with his partners in rhyme Indy Evans and Roc) write and trade off spastic verses over intensely creepy original music. They boast stuttering beats that give a nod to more obvious influences such as Bone Thugs and Do or Die, but also reference synth-pop legends Kraftwerk and early rap pioneer Afrika Bambaataa. The lead track “Once Again,” is simply bulletproof with a twisted, insideout keyboard riff and rapid fire lyrical attack, while “Tha Forrest” boasts an African chant backed by a descending cello line as all three members spit rhymes with astonishing velocity. Other standouts include the synth-bass heavy “No Games,” and the Halloween soundtrack inspired “Tha Sickness.” Expect to hear Second Coming pumping out of open car windows at any one of Evansville’s seven thousand stoplights in the coming weeks.
Shawn Needham & the Black Sheep
Audition Cheezydog Music 4 out of 5 There are more notes crammed into the opening track of Shawn Needham & the Black Sheep’s latest release Audition, than were most likely recorded during the whole of the 3-chords-and-the-truth punk rock revolution. In fact, this is exactly the sort of indulgent musical excess that Johnny Rotten desperately tried to kill off. But like the cockroach, not only surviving but thriving after nuclear fallout; bloated and endlessly complex instrumentals are alive and well and being recorded in Newburgh, IN. This is a good thing. Audition plays out like one long, endless time signature freak-out that shifts gears more often than necessary, but dares you to follow along and embrace the predictable unpredictability. Musical beasts such as “Crocogator” scream jazz fusion but just as quickly veer into grooves last heard on a Rage Against the Machine album. Primus bass explorations segue into Rush-like progressive rock. Within each six to eight minute instrumental, there exists the potential for approximately 10 Steely Dan songs. “Inside the Square Circle” (even the titles are complicated) adds flamenco guitar to the recipe and solidifies my suspicion that Shawn Needham is playing with six, perhaps seven fingers on each hand. You need but one to order this album. —Thomas Ellis

There is a stark distance explored here, varying drastically from previous albums that oozed with intimate, pulsating bedroom cries. Their single, “Today’s Supernatural,” is a welcomed bridge between the Animal Collective of old, and the bright, sonic new.

Fiddler on the Roof

vansville will get its chance to enjoy the Tony Award winning spectacular that has captivated audiences of all ages, of all faiths, all over the world. On October 18th, at 7 p.m. the Fiddler on the Roof will begin the Center’s Broadway Series. Written by Sholem Aleichem in 1894, the musical follows a Jewish family living in 1905 in a Jewish shteti in Russia. With the threat of pogroms, Tevye is in the beginning stages of marrying off his three daughters. He seeks the help of the village matchmaker. The matchmaker finds a wealthy suitor for his eldest daughter Tzietel. However, she has already fallen in love with a childhood friend who has no real wealth or any way to support their marriage. Before Tzeitel’s set to wed the wealthy suitor, her childhood friend confronts Tevye with his own proposal for her hand in marriage. Now Tevye must struggle with tradition and the basic human emotion of love. His second daughter Hodel, falls in love with a Marxist revolutionary, who has no regard for tradition. As if Teyve has not had enough of a struggle with faith and love, his youngest daughter Chava, falls for a man who saves her from the abuse and torment of his fellow companions. Chava and her suitor do not ask for blessings or permission at all. They elope. The story is a reminder that as time moves on, family still survives. HQ comes out the gate swinging with the second release of their gorgeously gothic actionadventure series Darksiders II. It has been two years since the release of the first installment in which the player inhabits War, a brooding rider of the apocalypse wielding an oversized broadsword; rid the worlds of evil and save humankind. In newest installment the player inhabits War’s brother, Death. Death’s mission is to redeem his brother War by resurrecting humanity and ridding the transcendent tree of life from the ‘corruption’ that infects it. Along the way the player encounters beautiful worlds of different climates and many enemies that seem to have been forged from the very elements of these environments by the ‘corruption’ to defeat the player. Fortunately, the player also encounters many friends. The player meets groups of warriors, shaman, tradesmen and even demons that help along the way. Death also has a huge collection of dark magic and potions that heal him make him stronger and help him dispatch enemies more efficiently at his disposal. The most loyal and beneficial companion on Death’s journey is his burly, phantasmal stead Despair who helps him navigate vast expanses faster and is absolutely fearless in battle.
One of the first things I noticed about this game is also one of its biggest strengths, is the high quality writing employed in the plot, narration and dialogue. I feel the emotional heft of Death’s mission, I’m captivated by its descriptive moments and I am charmed by its characters. The game sports epic scenery that looks slightly cartoonish but striking at the same time. In one environment called ‘The Charred Lands’ an exploding volcano in the distance spews forth lava bombs that fall all around the player like iridescent orange meteors. The melee dynamics are definitely one of the starts of the show as well. The player can deliver a series of savagely fast blows, dodge, punish the enemy again, dodge and then finish them off with staggering fluidity. One of the only flaws I noticed in this game is that in between maps or boards the screen freezes and a loading icon appears for about three seconds. This not a huge problem by any means but it can get annoying.
