Who has never, ever imagined being a magical Disney character? C’mon, you know you have imagined you were Cinderella or the Handsome Prince or even Mater or Tinkerbell.

D

isney has always had a magical character for everyone, young and old. Well, imagine no longer. For 4 exciting days, the Ford Center is hosting Disney on Ice: Worlds of Fantasy, starting on Wednesday, March 27th and ending on Saturday, March 30th. Rev up for non-stop fun with four of your favorite Disney stories! Disney on Ice: Worlds of Fantasy includes some of your favorite characters from Cars, The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan and Toy Story. From wheels to waves and playrooms to pixie dust, watch as your family favorite Disney tales come to life right before your eyes. Ironically, that’s the magical part—the characters are real. Disney on Ice started in 1981 by the Walt Disney Company and featured then, as now, popular Disney characters in costume, ice skating in front of thousands of excited fans. “Princess Wishes,” which began in 2006, became so popular it was literally a national and international phenomenon, beginning the current princess revolution for little girls. Not only will you be enamored by the ice skaters, you will also be entranced with the singing, dancing and visual storytelling of the skaters. Disney on Ice has enjoyed worldwide acclaim from the U.S. to the Middle East to Southeast Asia, so we are extremely fortunate to have

them right here in Evansville. If you are encouraging a budding ice skater, then this show is a must see. But, before skating off into the sunset, you might want to hear what life is like from the skater’s perspective. Performing in 25 countries around the world, Disney skater Alevia Peterson, who plays Barbie in the Toy Story ice show says “Worlds of Fantasy is most certainly a unique show, great for both boys and girls alike. Of course, there are beloved princesses and fairies, but also we are the only show to have cars on ice with Lightning McQueen and Mater, as well as Toy Story’s Buzz Lightyear and Woody.” Like many people right here in Evansville, Peterson’s interest in skating peaked because of spending so much time at skating rinks with her family. Now, she has been skating with Disney on Ice for nine years, playing Tinkerbell, High School Musical: The Ice Tour!, skating in Mulan and more. But before you or your child commits to a career of ice skating, there are some constraints to consider. “Ice skating isn’t easy. It requires hours of practice every day,” Peterson says. She performs 6-12 shows in a week, which means as many as 3 shows in one day for a season lasting 9-10 months a year, beginning in September and ending sometime in May. On a normal show day, Peterson arrives at the arena about an hour before the show starts to get “prepped,” which includes makeup, hair, costumes, skating warm-ups and practices. Between travel, practice, prepping and shows, Peterson says, “Skating is my life.” That’s definitely something to consider before you commit yourself or your child to a career of ice skating. But, just think, right now, all you have to do is buy a ticket, show up a few minutes before show time, sit back and enjoy. —Nicole Thompson (New Tech Institute)

O

Parents, lock up your daughters. Kid Rock’s “Rebel Soul” tour featuring Buckcherry and Hellbound Glory is on a collision course with Evansville on April Fool’s Day.

f course, this is no prank. The 42-year-old, self-professed “American Bad A**” will raprock the Ford Center to its foundation with tracks from his latest album, “Rebel Soul,” and plenty of crowd favorites. From his early hit, “Cowboy,” to the current single, “Let’s Ride,” Kid Rock has been a constant presence on the charts – and on the road. His touring reputation is unvarnished. Whether entertaining thousands of fans across America or the troops in the Middle East, Kid Rock knows how to put on a show. Christened Robert James Ritchie, Jr. at birth, Rock was hardly an overnight success. In 1990, he released his debut album, Grits Sandwiches for Breakfast. A predominantly raporiented recording, it sold 100,000 copies and made Rock a semi-legend in his hometown of Detroit. But as often happens, his follow-up, The Polyfuze Method, failed to make near

10 | March

2013 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

the impact, stalling at sales of 15,000. The album did, however, serve to introduce the rap-rock sound that would eventually bring Rock fame and fortune. After numerous singles did little to trouble the charts, he returned to the underground, recording demos that became known as The Bootleg Series. These releases spotlighted not just Rock but other Detroit rappers and garage rockers. In 1995, he created his own record label, Top Dog, and self-produced the album Early Mornin’ Stoned Pimp. No doubt frustrated by yet another lukewarm reception, Rock promised to “go platinum” with the next release. Everything changed in 1998. Rock signed to Atlantic Records and recorded the defining album of his career, Devil Without a Cause. Packed with anthems like “Cowboy,” “Bawitdaba” and “I Am the Bullgod,” it also included the ballad “Only God Knows Why.” Suddenly, Rock was all over mainstream radio and MTV and was on tour with Limp Bizkit and Staind. Meanwhile, the album continued to sell and did, indeed, go platinum – 11 times over. It would prove to be a very hard act to follow. Cocky was released in 2001. Inevitably, it could not repeat the overwhelming success of Devil, but the countryflavored ballad, “Picture,” became Rock’s first top five single. It kept his name in the papers and paved the way for another monster album in 2007. Rock and Roll Jesus became Rock’s first number one album, driven by the global success of the single “All Summer Long.” Both the song and the album had incredible staying power, continuing to chart for months. Rock was nominated for two Grammy awards and won the respect of a previously unimpressed industry. Once again, Rock was faced with the unenviable task of following up a multi-platinum album. 2010’s Born Free may not have sold as many copies, but it received excellent reviews and the title track was a top 20 hit. After touring extensively for the album, Rock began writing material for his latest release, Rebel Soul, which hit stores (and iTunes for the first time) on November 19, 2012. He eventually allowed iTunes to put his entire catalog up for sale in January. The move should introduce his music to a whole new generation of kids who listen exclusively to digital music and consider cd’s nothing but coasters with a hole in the middle. —Thomas Ellis

Hybrid Talk Jeff Wilson with

of

Henderson Dempewolf Ford

News4U (N4U): Gas-electric models seem to be the most common hybrids out there, what are their strengths and weaknesses? Jeff Wilson (JW): The strengths are better fuel economy, cleaner emissions and knowledge of doing what’s best for the environment. The only weakness to having a hybrid is the initial cost, which is slightly higher than non-hybrid models. N4U: What are some hybrid models that make great family vehicles? JW: Both the C-max and Fusion hybrids make excellent family vehicles because of their versatility and spacious interiors. The C-max gives you a very agile vehicle with excellent passenger volume and low cost of ownership. The Fusion allows you to enjoy the benefits of a hybrid and drive of an all new sedan with new packages for 2013 and a new styling that will make you proud to drive anywhere. N4U: Are their any hybrid models that have a sporty feel to them? JW: The Fusion has a sporty feel. It also has the look to convince you that it means business. N4U: Are fully electric vehicles that practical as of yet? JW: There is a market for fully electric vehicles. Unfortunately, in the mid-west we don’t have the luxury of charging stations or availability of fully electric vehicles. You will find most of this segment on the east and west coasts, where the greatest populations are. N4U: How do hybrid vehicles positively affect the environment? JW: They have lower emissions which help the environment and they also use much less fuel. N4U: How do hybrid vehicles save you money? JW: They allow you to drive past gas stations that you would normally stop at. Hybrids are a wonderful mix of gas and electric power that will give you many years of consistent performance and fuel savings. —Oliver Mason Henderson Dempewolf Ford is located at 2530 U.S. 41 in Henderson, KY. It’s not an exaggeration to say that George Jones is country music. With a career spanning over 55 years, countless albums and hits, the 81-year-old has not just seen it all, but lived it too.

A

ll of that experience has been documented in song to the delight of Jones’ devoted fans - many of whom weren’t even alive when he started recording back in the early 50’s. The tireless country star has scaled his number of live shows back the last few years and plans to retire soon but not before heading out for one more “Grand Tour.” When Jones pulls into Evansville on March 23, it will be the final opportunity to see this true living legend. The lyrics of country music often describe bouts of drinking and general rowdiness. Some artists simply play up their party side or fabricate for effect but Jones is famous for his exploits; he once embodied the phrase “hard-living.” Ten years sober now, the star spent much of his career in bars, always hanging around until last call. The only thing he may have loved more than drink was women. While the combination of the two often proved more than Jones could handle, it did provide him with the life experience necessary to write some of the biggest and most revered songs in country music. When Jones sings, you can hear and feel the emotion; his words come from the heart. The pain in his songs is very real but so is the love. This duality has made Jones an artist whose music continues to resonate with generation after generation of fans. With Jones’ sustained run of hit songs and classic albums, it’s hard to take in the scope of his career. He first hit number one in 1957 with the song “White Lightening” and was still at the top 25 years later with “I Always Get Lucky with You.” In between, Jones recorded some of his most famous songs via duets with his wife at the time, Tammy Wynette. The couple created country magic in the 70’s with several charttoppers including “We’re Gonna Hold On,” “Golden Ring” and “Near You.” This period was both incredibly successful and tumultuous for Jones. While he was riding high on the charts, more popular than ever, his personal life was slowly unraveling due to alcoholism. It was the inevitable downside of fame. But the selfdestruction never kept Jones from producing huge hits, and no song of his long career was bigger than his 1981 duet with Barbara Mandrell, “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool.” It was a cross-over success that

caught the attention of pop music fans and made both artists household names. Jones continued to record well up into the last decade but has since concentrated on playing live. After this tour, he hopes to spend more time with his family and enjoy the clarity that clean living has provided. It’s been a long and wild ride. —Thomas Ellis

Jim Gaffigan’s “White Bread Tour” is headed to the Centre on March 29. Known for his blindingly pale features, Gaffigan is one of the quirkiest and most successful comedians of the last decade; he’s a fixture on the stand-up circuit as well as on television and film.

T

he show at the Centre will be a bit of a homecoming for Gaffigan, an Indiana native who attended Purdue University before transferring schools and ultimately pursuing a career in comedy. His current tour draws on over 20 years of experience working crowds all over the world. Gaffigan started out like all aspiring comedians, performing material in every two-bit nightclub from coast to coast. His dead-pan approach initially caused some confusion, but audiences eventually warmed up to Gaffigan’s wry take on food and sloth-like behavior. Once the dam broke, his reputation for quick-witted asides and strange

14 | March

anecdotes spread. Gaffigan’s popularity soared and gave him the confidence (and cash) to record his first comedy album, Luigi’s Doghouse. It raised the comedian’s profile even more and led to a long-standing relationship with Comedy Central. After featuring some of Gaffigan’s material in a 2004 animated series, the cable channel filmed an hour-long comedy special based on his 2006 album, Beyond the Pale. A perfect storm of Gaffigan’s best material to date and Comedy Central’s growing popularity, it put the comedian on the map in a big way. He went from being just another funny guy to a major star in a few short months. Consequently, more and more offers flooded in, including parts in films such as The Love Guru and 17 Again. Most comedians dream of scoring a role on a sitcom; it’s the holy grail of jobs for joke-makers. Of course, Jerry Seinfeld set the bar impossibly high, but Gaffigan still must have been ecstatic when he landed a major part on the TBS comedy My Boys. The show received good feedback and ran for several seasons, an eternity in the fickle world of television. Soon after, Gaffigan appeared in an episode of the insanely successful HBO series, Flight of the Conchords. For my money, his portrayal of the band manager’s best friend is absolutely brilliant - dead-pan comedy at its finest. And yet, his recurring animated short, Pale Force, on (the nowdefunct) Late Night with Conan O’Brien may be even funnier. Gaffigan cleverly mocks his and O’Brien’s sickly white skin and continually presents the TV host as a weak cry-baby who often wets himself. The two of them are hilariously rendered as crime-fighters with the superpower of paleness. The last few years have been especially good for Gaffigan. Along with appearances on the HBO series Bored to Death and USA’s Royal Pains, he has starred in the movies Away We Go, It’s Kind of a Funny Story and Going the Distance. He has also released two more best-selling comedy albums, 2009’s King Baby and last year’s Mr. Universe. Don’t miss one of the nation’s best comedians at the Centre on March 29. —Thomas Ellis

y sister Karen, who was being treated for breast cancer at Oncology Hematology Associates (OHA) would often have me, her Chemo Buddy, assist other patients in the treatment room when they were there. Karen and I co-wrote a proposal called Chemo Buddies that allows volunteers to be present in the infusion center. It also provides companionship and practical support to patients because, as Karen wrote at the time, “no one should ever have to go through chemo alone.” The program has been in place since February 2012, and the Chemo Buddy volunteer team has come alongside nearly 7,000 people receiving chemo.

I, Jill Wilhite Kincaid, of Evansville, was inspired by the transformative impact that friendship and simple hospitality can make for patients undergoing chemotherapy.

For me, the goal is simple: be a friend. “I tell my volunteers to act as if that person in the recliner is sitting in their living room—to treat them with the same hospitality as you would a visitor in your home. Above all, don’t see them as patients, but as people. Chemo is a long day, and having a friend to sit and talk with is a major stress reliever. If a patient is sharing conversation with you about something in their lives, they aren’t sitting there focusing on their cancer or their fears.” —Jill Kincaid

Is the Still in the Building? Since his passing on August 16th, 1977, mysteries surrounding the death of Elvis Presley have given rise to a superfluous number of imaginative conspiracy theories, outlandish tabloid articles and to some, a glimmering hope that maybe, just maybe, the King hasn’t left the building after all.

T

hese theories range in plausibility, from Presley entering the FBI’s witness protection program to those who believe he reinvented himself as the masked country music singer Orion. Some diehard weirdos even go so far as to believe that the King of rock and roll was an extraterrestrial and simply returned to his home planet. Though the evidence supporting Elvis being from Mars is nil, the events circling Presley’s death could be described as odd to say the least. A thorough autopsy was performed and a prescription drug overdose was the presumed cause, but an official diagnosis was never given. Shortly after, a private autopsy was requested by the family, the contents of which have never been released. And, this is where things take a turn for the strange. Accounts of Elvis’ funeral are hard to delineate as fact or fiction based on little evidence of reliability and a lack of an actual list of those attendance. There are however, several reoccurring phenomena which seem to be very nearly unanimously accepted as having been true. One: “Elvis” seemed to look very unlike himself (this is usually the consensus of people viewing a loved one in an open casket). Two: “Elvis’” left sideburn was detached from his face (some think a wax figure of Elvis was placed in the casket). Three: The “person” in Presley’s casket had hands that were soft, pudgy and smooth, far from resembling the calloused, worn hands of a man known for guitar playing and brick breaking (Elvis was a black belt in both Tae Kwon Do and American Kenpo). The oddities continue. Elvis Aron (notice the single “a” spelling) was the name printed on Presley’s official birth certificate on January 8th, 1935. The reason for the odd spelling was in memory of Elvis’ identical twin brother, Jesse Garon Presley, who was delivered stillborn. This unusual spelling of Aron was very important to Elvis, a very sentimental, even superstitious man. Thus, Presley’s gravestone reading Elvis Aaron Presley (Aaron with two a’s) is an oversight one wouldn’t think could be made easily. It is known that Elvis attempted to aid the FBI in 1970 and wanted badly to become an informant. It is also a fact that Elvis had a bad run-in involving the sale of one of his planes with “The Fraternity,” a known crime circle associated with the mafia. Members of “The Fraternity” were arrested a tried shortly after the King’s death in 1977. This gives stock to those that believe Elvis did not die, but was placed in the witness protection program for divulging live-threatening information to the FBI. This would explain the vague autopsy report, the uncanny imposter in the casket and the misspelling of the name on the gravestone. There it is, a brief glimpse at some of the oddities and curiosities that circle the death of Elvis. In the words of the X-Files:: the truth is out there. For more information on conspiracy theories surrounding Elvis’ death and afterlife, I recommend watching the documentary Elvis: Dead or Alive, a decent investigative report by Bill Bixby (it can be found streaming on Youtube). And, definitely look up Orion. You won’t be disappointed. —Karina Cochran Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • March 2013

When it comes to serving up some major heat, Brenna Wu, a senior at Reitz Memorial High School, sears the neon felt right off the ball.

he brings such skill, intensity and dedication to the game of tennis it would make Andre Agassi do a double-take. Her talent has led her to sign a letter of intent to attend and play tennis at the University of Southern Indiana. Wu was part of the Reitz Memorial tennis team that won the State Championship in Indiana last year and who intend on keeping their title secure this year. News4U had a chance to have a chat with Wu to get to know the young lady behind the racquet. News4U (N4U): How did you get into tennis? Brenna Wu (BW): Tennis is a sport that someone could say ‘runs in my family.’ My Aunt Julie let my cousin Maria, play tennis and she loved it instantly. I received the opportunity to go to watch some of Maria’s high school matches, and I loved the experience. After seeing some of her matches as well as talking to my aunt, my mom made the decision to put me into a tennis program at what used to

be Advantage Court and Fitness. I was 10 years old at the time. N4U: How does it feel to be able to use your skill and talent to represent your school? BW: I feel great pride in who I am as well as having great pride in my school. To be able to show my talents for my school and my God is truly a marvelous gift. N4U: What are some of your interests outside tennis? BW: I love to spend time with my family as well as my friends. I love to watch movies, listen to music and play other sports like volleyball, basketball or even ping pong. I also love to read, travel and bake. N4U: What tips would you give someone who is new to tennis and wants to be really good at it? BW: First, make sure to go out and continue to practice anytime an opportunity presents itself. Another thing I would say would be to set goals

for yourself. When I started to play my coaches let me set goals for myself, and I believe that setting those goals helped me to be where I am today. N4U: What is your favorite memory tied to the sport? BW: Last summer, my high school team went all the way to the state championships. At the state level, you have to win three matches in order to win the “final” trophy. I played doubles at the time, and as a team we won the first two matches. As a whole team, we were down to our final match playing against Cathedral, a school near Indianapolis. My doubles partner and I were one of the first matches to win, and I remember the suspense waiting and watching my other teammates. I was watching our freshman play her match, and if she won, she won the state title for our team. When she won the final point, I ran onto the court screaming and shouting. It was an amazing experience that I don’t think I could ever forget. —Nick Durcholz

Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra

presents:

Although the original Orient Express passenger train runs its course no longer, the people of Evansville will have a special and rare chance to ride its rails once again as the Maestro Alfred Savia and the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra take you on a musical journey along the Orient Express.

T PHOTO CREDIT CARRIE MARRETT

News 4U (N4U): Each piece of music selected has the intention of guiding the audience through some interesting cities in Europe on the Orient Express (Vienna, Austria, Venice, Italy, Bucharest, Romania, Budapest, Hungary and Prague, Czech Republic). Why was this route chosen? Alfred Savia (AS): Those are actual stops that were on the real Orient Express and all the interesting musical pieces fit the journey, with Vienna being the most prolific with famous composers. We open with a touch of the Orient, since it IS the Orient Express after all, with a beautiful piece by the composer Bright Sheng, then roll into a little Viennese “bonbon” with the short Strauss polka piece, and the Vivaldi is a streaming, very light piece along the journey. The Romanian and Hungarian music is very robust and exciting, with the trip ending on a soaring piece by Dvorak. Also, my wife and I just went on a trip, a Blue Danube cruise, and advertised it during our concerts and on our website for music lovers to join us. Three nights in Budapest with stops in Austria, Vienna and Prague… During the performance the audience will get to see pictures we took on that trip projected on a screen.

his is a one night only event, Saturday, March 16th at 7 p.m. at the Victory Theatre. It is part of the Passport to Passion 2012 – 2013 series. Concert-goers can expect to hear terrific music from prolific composers Bright Sheng, Antonio Vivaldi, George Enesco, Johann Strauss, Jr., Franz Liszt and Antonin Dvorak. News 4U caught up with the Maestro Alfred Savia to find out more about this intriguing concert.

N4U: Some of the pieces (Sheng, Vivaldi) have never been performed by the Philharmonic and others haven’t been performed in years. Are these performances going to be an exciting journey for the orchestra as well? AS: Oh, I think so! This is the first time the orchestra is playing a piece by Sheng. He is a very talented composer and it’s exciting to do his piece. The orchestra we have now is more advanced and talented, but the Romanian and Hungarian pieces (most recognizable from the old Bugs Bunny cartoons) have fallen out of favor, and while it would have been known better back then by the members of the old orchestra, I think the current orchestra will find this new and challenging. The Dvorak will be like going back to an old friend, as it’s a very recognizable piece. It’s a great way to end a lovely musical journey. The Orient Express concert will be on March 16 at 7 p.m. at the Victory Theatre in downtown Evansville. —Julie Buente

Knives pump like pistons, hot oil splashes like molten rock and terse commands pierce the thick steam as eight teams of local chefs/cooks pit their speed and skill against one another in a culinary clash.

S

aid battle is the Steel Cook Competition which will take place on March 10 at 4 p.m. in the Casino Aztar Conference Center. In the spirit of Food Network’s shows Iron Chef and Iron Chef America, participants are given a ‘secret ingredient’ which they must prepare a full meal around. The eight teams participating in this year’s competition represent Biaggi’s, Acropolis, The Hornet’s Nest, Ivy Tech Community College, Cavanaugh’s, Lorenzo’s, Victoria National Golf Club and Owensboro’s Famous Bistro. The competitors’ will have to bring their talents honed and primed, but they must also be prepped to use their talents with the utmost speed. It is this mixture of speed and precision that gets the most experienced of cooks and chefs sweating like they are in a pressure cooker.

After the teams have finished their dishes, they are presented to a panel of six local judges to be critiqued on three things: Taste, presentation and use of the ‘secret ingredient.’ The judges will deliberate, and then choose which team will emerge victorious. Those in attendance of the competition will provided a myriad of tasty appetizers from food booths represented by each of the Casino Aztar restaurants including Cavanaugh’s, Blush Ultralounge & Tapas Bar, Diamond Deli, Max & Erma’s, Ri Ra Irish Pub, Riverside Cookery, Temptation Buffet, Le Parisianne du Chocolat and Riverview Coffee Company. All proceeds from the 2013 Steel Cook Competition will go to the Tri-Sate Food Bank who serve our community’s families and children by providing food for those in need through a network of other local charities.

News4U was able to catch up with last year’s winner Jayson Munoz of Kanpai Sushi & Asian Bistro to get a first hand glimpse into the heat in the Steel Cook kitchen. News4U (N4U): What specifically do you think led to your Steel Cook victory in 2012? Jayson Munoz (JM): Quick thinking on my feet. I have a lot of energy and not being limited to cooking one kind of cuisine. I am a true foodie at heart. N4U: What advice would you give a chef/cook entering into the competition for the first time?

JM: Don’t be a sore loser, the event is for charity. Also, bring the person you are most comfortable cooking with. Have fun and

push yourself!

N4U: Which challenger this year do you think is the biggest threat? JM: I think Doros (from Acropolis) has a good shot. He has been runner up the last two years. Third time is a charm. Plus, I won’t be there. (Laughs) N4U: What do you enjoy most about the Steel Cook Competition?

JM: The money it raises for the food bank. I love that…I love our city and anything I can do to help it- I jump in. The Steel Cook competition is one of the most unique and exciting events not only for foodies but even for those who can’t boil water. The palpable excitement and energy in the air, not to mention the glorious smells, are enticing to all. —Nick Durcholz

COOKING SPOTLIGHT Lenten Season at

Tin Fish

T

he Lenten season is once again upon us and that means fish on Friday. Thankfully, the tri-state area offers any number of excellent seafood restaurants. Tin Fish, located at 300 W. Jennings St. in Newburgh, is among the very best. Born and raised in New York, owner Morgan Castillo worked as a sous-chef in Florida and Colorado before moving to Newburgh in 2006. She took a position as a line/grill cook at Evansville Country Club but jumped at the chance to be a full-time chef at Tin Fish. When the original owners decided to sell the restaurant in 2007, Castillo was on the shortlist of prospective buyers. “It was a very big decision for me,” she explains, “but I come from a family of entrepreneurs, and it seemed like a good opportunity.” Once in charge, Castillo worked tirelessly to achieve and maintain extremely high standards of quality and service. “I want to make sure my customers are happy all the time. My staff is amazing, and we all strive to ensure that people always get a fantastic meal every time they come in,” she says. While the Tin Fish menu features one tempting seafood option after another, the restaurant has gained a reputation for certain items. “We’re famous for our fish and chips,” says Castillo. “It is North Atlantic cod served with crisp-cut fries and homemade slaw – which is sweet and sour, vinegar-based. We’re also known for our fish tacos. Our most popular ones are the cod and the grilled mahi-mahi. But my favorite is the calamari taco.” Tin Fish offers two different styles of tacos – the original and the tio chico which is named after Castillo’s uncle. Both come wrapped in an eight inch flour tortilla. The original style features cabbage, homemade pico de gallo, shredded cheddar cheese and a little bit of white sauce and hot sauce. The tio chico is similar but with more of a kick. It features cabbage, homemade papaya salsa, hot sauce, cheese, fresh cilantro and lime. Most fish choices for the tacos come either fried or grilled. As a connoisseur of fish tacos, I can say with the utmost sincerity that Tin Fish serves an absolutely amazing product. I had the pleasure of trying their classic cod taco, and the combination of cheeses and sauces drizzled on top of the flakiest, freshest fish imaginable made my day. I’m not ashamed to admit that I abandoned my normal table manners and ate

with alarming speed. So, Lenten season or not, I urge you to try Tin Fish – and personally challenge you to eat with dignity. It can’t be done. It should be noted that while Tin Fish excels with seafood, they do also serve equally delicious chicken burritos, sandwiches, tacos and tenders – and burgers for meat lovers. As stated above, there are many excellent seafood places in the area. One great option for Lent is Farm Boy Food Mart located at 2761 N. Kentucky Ave. It has an extensive selection of fish including cod, pollack, flounder, catfish/fiddlers and salmon, not to mention shrimp. Another place to check out is Par-K Seafood located at 757 S. Green River Rd. Their selection includes speckled trout, grouper, tuna, mahimahi, red snapper, salmon and flounder as well as shrimp, crab, oysters and crawfish. —Thomas Ellis Both Farm Boy Food Mart and Par-K Seafood have seafood available all year long.

What ' s ‘ Cookin A

Ri Ra Irish Pub

701 N.W. Riverside Drive, Evansville, IN 47708 812-426-0000

figurehead in the Evansville night life scene for seven years, Ri Ra Irish Pub not only offers a kilt-raising good time with great music and libations but they also boast some of the most quality, reasonablypriced cuisine in the city. Ri Ra prides itself on being a scratch kitchen; every dish is prepared on the spot using the freshest of ingredients. True to its name, Ri Ra slings dishes bursting with the flavor and luck of the Irish all year long. Their kitchen staff incorporates both immigrant and traditional Irish culinary ideas into the food. Even some of the non-Irish menu items hold within them a bit of blarney. “We have a food and beverage director who’s just insane about Irish cuisine and taking it to that next level. Everything we do is going to have a bit of an Irish twist to it,” said Ryan Bodine, General Manager of Ri Ra Evansville. Walking into the pub, the traditional Irish tunes fill the space, the jolly notes coaxing you into a jig. It has the all the spirit of an old immigrant Irish tavern in a contemporary body. The dark, rich wood and textures invigorate and comfort at the same time. The first offering delivered by Ri Ra Executive Chef Raul Sanchez is the Corned Beef and Cabbage. The Corned Beef is cooked to perfection. The texture is tender and neat to the point that the individual shreds of beef split from each other with the slightest effort. The accompanying parsley sauce added an earthy flair without hiding the uncanny freshness of the meat. There is also a faint but noticeable sweetness to the beef that intrigued my palate. The cabbage sports a mild flavor and brisk texture but keeps substance with help from the parsley sauce. A side of coiffed mashed potatoes provided a rich and savory distraction.

The second dish that came to the table was the Irish Stew. It is the epitome of stick-to-your-bones comfort food, like Mom’s pot-roast with carrots, stew meat, tomatoes and of course, some Guinness. Chunks of rich, tender beef and veggies swim in earthy goodness. A few distractions presented at the same time were Bangers, a medium-sized sausage with a subtle but still savory and smoky taste. Also, Irish Rashers thinly sliced and faintly sweet pork cuts, as well as White Pudding, a rich and savory sausage-disk with earthy tones. Last to come to the table was Ri Ra Fish & Chips, a whole side of Haddock encased in a beautiful, bright amber batter. The Haddock is so tender it nearly melts in my mouth, the fish itself was perfectly moist and the batter comes in with a one-two punch of flaky, savory goodness. The beer batter was so flavorful and yet, the subtle taste of the Haddock itself stays intact. A side of Irish Remoulade brings sweet, tart and savory tones to the dish knocking the palate for a loop while a second side of an extremely zesty Tartar Sauce with a touch of mint awakens all the senses. This dish is a flavor powerhouse. Ri Ra Irish Pub has all the bases covered for a great time anytime of the year, but when it comes to St. Patrick’s Day, this place is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. —Nick Durcholz

localchefspotlight Jeremiah Galey

P

osey County native Jeremiah Galey is the Executive Chef at the Red Geranium, located in New Harmony, IN. Galey lived in Wadesville, IN his entire life until his recent move to New Harmony. The North Posey High School grad spent one semester at Vincennes University for audio recording before deciding to follow his passion: music, through his local band Gentlemen and Scholars. In addition to his love of music though, Galey has an “obsession” with food, specifically flavor combinations. Galey states, “I was fascinated by how I could loathe a certain taste or texture, but I could pair it somehow with another and change everything.” At the Red Geranium, Chef Galey started as a dishwasher in 2005 and has since moved up to Executive Chef. Having started there in high school, Galey has always valued this area as his home. He shares, “I know the people in the area, and I feel I can relate to what they want.” He’s always had a drive to manage, though. So with the work ethic that his parents instilled on him at a young age, Galey enjoys “excel[ing] at the things [he] loves because in [his] mind, anything short of perfection might as well be a failure.” He also believes it’s important to constantly think about how he can improve things around him.

The Red Geranium 504 North St New Harmony, IN 47631 (812) 682-4431

Galey enjoys having a seasonal menu at the restaurant. He states that “I love knowing what I’m about to order was designed to be perfect that exact day. It’s so personable.” The history of the town and the restaurant are also important to Galey. “There’s still this sparkle in the air. So many people come through here. There will always be some untraceable quality about New Harmony. Like a private little luxury, just for you.” He’s also excited about the upcoming 2013 50th anniversary of the Red Geranium, which he describes as “pretty impressive in today’s world.” Galey’s favorite dish on the menu at the Red Geranium is their current featured salad: Spinach tossed in a new Sweet Pepper vinaigrette, topped with sliced Pears, chocolate covered Walnuts, and Bleu cheese crumbles. His favorite dish to cook though is the Sea Scallops. He shares that, “Their flavor mixes perfectly with the Potato Mousseline and Carrot-ginger sauce. And the dish looks incredibly appealing. Nice contrast with bright colors.” For the lunch crowd, he recommends one of their seasonal salads. He adds, “Right now, we’ve still got the fall/ winter salads. I would get the Italian Salad in a heartbeat. Fresh romaine, Feta cheese and our freshly-made Italian dressing? You can’t go wrong.” For dinner, Galey recommends starting with the Caesar Salad. He shares, “The croutons are made that day, and the Caesar dressing is a recipe I feel I’ve perfected.” Following the salad, Galey recommends the Roasted Duck. Galey describes it as “really geared towards fall/winter right now, but on the new spring menu starting in April, it will be undeniable.” Then for dessert, he recommends the Butterscotch Bread Pudding with Bourbon Glaze, which he refers to as his “vice,” adding that he “can’t get enough of it.” —Nikki Davis Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • March 2013

AWedding Day toServices, Remember LLC

W

hen we started our business in 2007 it was with the goal of having an easy and affordable way for couples to get married. There are too many times when couples have to travel out-of-state to find an officiant that will marry them. We wanted to bring to our area a service that was much needed. Fast forward 5 years later and our goal remains the same! We now have two ordained ministers that are able to officiate weddings in Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky. Our services are nondenominational and our ceremonies are fully customizable. Our officiants are not affiliated with a specific religious group nor are they tied to a local church. They can travel to the location of the couples choosing. Over the years we have met so many wonderful couples and all their needs are different. We have married couples in their homes or backyards, at the Evansville and Newburgh Riverfront, private-party restaurants, event centers or venues, golf courses, country clubs, etc. We don’t always know where our next one will take us! Last year, we were able to travel to French Lick, IN and also Brown County State Park. This year we will be traveling to Jasper and…who knows? We look forward to working with each couple and making their day A Day To Remember! —Leah Dugan

nother great live show is coming to the Centre on March 4. Hard rock veterans Daughtry and 3 Doors Down will co-headline the concert, each bringing an arsenal of hits and years of touring experience. Daughtry got his big break on season five of American Idol. Capitalizing on the exposure, he released his selftitled debut album in 2006; singles “It’s Not Over” and “Home” helped to boost sales of over four million, making him one of the most successful Idol contestants since the show’s inception. 2009’s Leave This Town and 2011’s Break the Spell both continued Daughtry’s chart dominance, each producing further hit singles, including “No Surprise” and “Outta My Head.” 3 Doors Down first appeared on the radar in 2000 with the release of their debut album, The Better Life. The first single, “Kryptonite,” was a hugely popular song, charting in the top five. The album eventually sold over six million copies. Many bands have crumbled under the pressure of following up such a massive success, but 3 Doors Down responded with a string of hits, including “When I’m Gone,” “Here without You,” “Let Me Go” and “It’s Not My Time.” In 2011, they released the album Time of My Life and followed that up with a well-deserved greatest hits package last year. —Thomas Ellis The Centre is located at 715 Locust St. in downtown Evansville. The show starts at 7 p.m.

Mystery Dinner: Murder at the Speakeasy

S

ure, Mayor Winnecke knows how to make the tough day to day decisions for the greater good of Evansville, but can he act? We shall soon find out on March 15. The Mayor and the first Lady Winnecke are starring in an upcoming Mystery Dinner titled “Murder at the Speakeasy” at the Fraternal Order of the Eagles on Old Boonville Highway. The production starts at 6:30 p.m., and all proceeds benefit Camp Riley – an organization that helps inspire youth with physical disabilities to realize their potential as they become increasingly independent. For those of you out of the mystery dinner loop, it’s a bit like playing a game of Clue in real life. The players take on the roles of various suspects and act out a murder scenario. Meanwhile, observers enjoy a delicious meal as they try to solve the crime. In addition to dinner, a cash bar will be provided along with postmystery music by Hoosier Daddy. Cash prizes will be awarded to the first three dinner guests that correctly identify the murderer. Tickets are $25. There is a limited number available for the production, so it is requested that you make a reservation, though you may pick up the ticket at the door. Keep in mind, donations are still being accepted for the silent auction to also benefit Camp Riley. Area businesses are being asked to donate an item for this great cause. —Thomas Ellis To reserve a ticket or make a donation, please contact: ESAsorority@yahoo.com or call 812-457-2245 (Megan) or 812-477-7627 (Linda).

yan Wagner, 36, is the mastermind, owner and all-out creative tour de force behind his graphics and website design business here in Evansville called VisualRush. His self-made and self-run business specializes in being the jack of all digital and print trades. Not only does he do web design, domain name registration, mobile websites, web banners, SSL secure webforms, website maintenance (webmaster) services, web redesign and development and ongoing company website updates, but also branches into print services with custom business card design, logo design, print advertisement layout and design, custom graphics, letterhead and envelope sets, image retouching, vinyl banner design, flyers and promos, catalogue and magazine layout and direct mail design and printing. He’s a busy fellow doing what he loves to do, and he’s got an extensive and satisfied clientele list that is a testament to his hard work and talent. News 4U (News4U): How did you get your start in graphic design and building websites? Ryan Wagner (RW): When I was in college at Murray State I was an advertising major and minored in graphic design, and I was always drawing and painting. I really liked that everything in that field was jumping to computers. It became an obsession and I loved learning the technology so I got into freelancing. N4U: How long have you been on a professional/business level with your work? RW: I’ve been doing it since 2001/2002. Every three years there is an upheaval of styles and trends, so you have to adapt to what the client wants in the current

N4U: What sets your business apart from the rest? RW: Every client is unique. My goal is to make them look good. We use their existing branding or create new logos using color for what they need and/or want. Consistently unique looks for my clients is key. I can meet with the client face to face, putting them on a personal business level so I’m not just the guy behind the keyboard. I try to get at the meat of what they want my product to portray for them and their own business, organization or whatever they need in print, web and/ or design. My clientele is mainly local, with a fast growing number on a national level as well as some international. I recently redesigned the logo for Go Mini and that is now being used for their national advertising campaign. This area is particularly unique in how well my business gets its name out there by word of mouth. It is how I’ve gotten a lot of my clients around here. N4U: Any plans for future projects or expansion? RW: I don’t have any definite plans to expand per say, but I do enjoy the freedom aspect of working anywhere I like and having the personal relationship with my clients. I have a wife and a daughter and love spending time with my family. It’s the best job I have ever had. —Julie Buente To find out more about VisualRush you can check it out on facebook at www.facebook.com/ visualrushdesign or at www.visualrush.com.

I

n the late 90’s, local soul musician and vocalist Roy Micah Carter was living in Bloomington, Ind. His band at the time was called Kung Fu Coalition, but Carter sensed the need for change. Then one night he happened to see the 1992 comedy Diggstown, starring Lou Gossett, Jr.; the actor plays an aging prizefighter nicknamed “Honey” Roy Palmer. Struck by the coincidence, Carter knew that he had found a musical identity – though he now jokingly admits to being worried about a potential lawsuit. “I kept waiting for someone to say something or notice,” laughs Carter, “but no one ever did.” Carter eventually left Bloomington behind in 1999 but not before an amazing thing happened: future superstars Train actually opened for his band. “They were super cool – just passing through on their way to the East Coast. I have to question sometimes whether it really happened, but it did,” he says, still amused by the memory. A brief but fateful hold-over in Newburgh, Ind. followed. There, Carter met the love of his life. The two of them were soon bound for the Northwest, settling in Bend, Ore. where Carter attended college and played at a weekly open mic show. His soulful, energetic performances so impressed local musicians that he was able to handpick a backing band. To this day, Carter is in awe of the extreme reaction. “It was great. We did mostly original stuff and people went bananas,” he says. “I played the same songs before and after Oregon and didn’t ever get quite the same response. It was just the right mix of people at the right time.” Life got a bit more complicated in 2004 after Carter married and prepared to become a father. He and his wife returned to the Midwest and called Louisville, Ky. home for the next six years. During this period, Carter formed a new Honey Roy Band with a radically different make-up from previous incarnations. “All the musicians were gospel players – a strange thing but a really good experience,” says Carter. Soon, the band was gaining a reputation for earth-shaking live shows. But after Carter and his wife welcomed their second and third child, another move was imminent. In 2010, the couple settled in Boonville, Ind. which afforded Carter the opportunity to join musical forces with his father, saxophonist Roy Carter, Sr. The two quickly formed a new version of the Honey Roy Band to play a house party. Over the last few years,

members have come and gone but the current line-up is as talented as any, featuring Bob Legate on guitar, John Hyneman on bass and Greg Tuley on drums. They primarily play covers – Maroon 5, Bruno Mars, Cee Lo Green, Zac Brown Band, Al Green, Stevie Wonder and Wilson Picket – just to name a few. But frankly, these guys can tackle any genre, any era. Their next show is at Doc’s Nightclub on 3/17. Carter has also formed the Honey Roy Duo with former Namaste drummer, Tim Mitchell. The format allows them to try out different material and improvise. In fact, they are as busy as the main band, if not more so. Upcoming shows include Lorenzo’s on 3/7 and Lamasco on 3/10 (they also play the third Saturday of every month at the Bokeh Lounge). Still, even with two highly successful outfits, Carter has no plans for stardom. “I really love being home at night with my three kids. I have a friend who made it in the music industry, and he is gone all the time. I couldn’t make that sacrifice.” —Thomas Ellis

The University of Evansville Piano Series began in 1997. Since then, some 35 pianists from around the world visited the university to perform in concert.

S

ome of the pianists who performed in the series include Evansville natives Nino Cocchiarella and Margaret Halbig. Internationally known pianists who performed include Marc-André Hamelin and Milica Jelaca Jovanovic. According to Dr. Garnet Ungar, Associate Professor of Piano at UE, the music department usually hosts four or five piano concerts each year depending on when the pianists’ schedules allow them to travel to Evansville. The process for selecting which musicians perform at the university involves a three person committee. The final say belongs to Dr. Ungar. He receives input from Anne Fiedler, another piano professor at UE and Dr. Thomas Josenhans, the chair of the music department. “Most of the artists we host are known to me either in person or by reputation. Sometimes I contact them to determine their availability, sometimes they contact me offering to play,” Ungar said. “I pick the pianists whose playing I most admire. I usually also play a solo recital myself as part of the series, and Anne often does so as well,” he added. The final Piano Series concert of the school year features Angela Park performing in Wheeler Concert Hall at the University of Evansville on Thursday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $15 for adults and $5 for students. University of Evansville students receive free admission with their student ID. Park, a native of London, Ontario, began studying music at age 3 after her parents saw her bothering her older sister as she practiced. Park later became the youngest Gold Medal winner at the Western Ontario Conservatory of Music. In addition to playing piano, Park studied violin performance for 10 years. She currently serves as a visiting assistant professor at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. Park’s concert will feature “Barcarolle” by Chopin, Beethoven’s “Sonata No. 21” and Liszt’s Années de pèlerinage, Bk. I from Suisse. “The Chopin and Beethoven works are understandably some of the most well-loved pieces from the piano repertoire. I’m also looking forward to presenting the Liszt set,” Park said. The Classical Guitar Society of Evansville began in 1982 and works to bring classical guitarists to Evansville for concerts. In addition to guitarists from the United States, musicians from Brazil, France,

Chile and Canada came to Evansville thanks to the efforts of the society. According Renato Butturi, Assistant Professor of Classical Guitar at the University of Evansville, the Society hosts four concerts each year. The next guitar concert features Jordan Dodson performing on Friday, March 22 in Wheeler Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $15 for adults and $5 for students. University of Evansville students receive free admission with their student ID. Dodson began playing guitar at age 11 due to his love of pop and rock music. After playing in some bands, he started playing classical guitar as a teenager. After meeting Professor Butturi at a classical guitar workshop at the University of Cincinnati (Dodson’s alma mater), he received an invitation to play a concert in Evansville. “I’ll be playing some of my favorite repertoire pieces in the concert - two amazing show pieces by Giulio Regondi, a sonata by Leo Brouwer, Bach and an amazing new piece by American composer Paul Lansky, among others,” Dodson said. —Paul Bragin

Ratings are given from 1-5. 5 is the best rating a reviewer can give, meaning they were very pleased with the beer and would strongly recommend it. 1 is the lowest rating a reviewer can give, meaning they did not enjoy the beer at all.

Shock Top Honeycrisp Apple Wheat

Christy Moore • 4

The nose is very impressive, straight from the orchard. Now I know they always say “a few bad apples can spoil the bunch.” And my reply in this case is “Good!” Because this is what I call making the best of a bad situation! It has a honey golden transparency. If you want to get boozed up and enjoy the flavor of sweet cider at the same time, then you will equally like this handcrafted ale.

Jabez Martinez • 3.5

The beer pours an average, cloudy yellow and I can smell the apples a mile away. It had a heavy apple flavor which was sweet and tart, and only a slight wheat flavor. The apples pretty much dominate the flavor. I think they went a little overboard. I would consider this a cider rather than a beer because it didn’t taste like one.

Nick D • 4

The hue that this beer pours as is probably the only thing that is unappetizing about it, a murky, lukewarm yellow. However, the smell is as if you were lying on your back in the middle of an apple orchard in early summer with a beehive nearby adding the slight more saccharine scent of honey along with the wave of apple. The flavor is vibrant and tangy but doesn’t linger too long. Overall, it is a wellbalanced flavored brew.

Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye

B. Nektar Meadery Zombie Killer Cherry Cyser

Christy Moore • 4 Christy Moore • 5

The color is a clear sappish amber with a nose that is very pine hops, which follows through with the taste. Death adorned with the flesh robes of feminine beauty carries both allure and symbolism of the passing of seasons on the label imagery. The underlying peppery spice is a good complement and helps even out and brings balance to this unique brew.

Jabez Martinez • 4

I am not an IPA fan, but I liked this one. This beer poured a dark, amber color with good carbonation. I could taste the bready malt but not knocked over by them. The hops were distinctive but didn’t coat your tongue like some IPA’s. The beer had a creamy finish to it. Once again Sierra Nevada produces another good beer.

Nick D • 2.5

This IPA pours a brilliant light brown. The scent is very formidable; the hops come storming up the nostrils like diesel fumes but not quite as caustic. It is quite a sour and dingy smell but not exactly unpleasant. The first pull is a tough one, the texture is nice and even but the flavor is just too rank, like biting into a mossy tree trunk. An IPA lover would definitely enjoy this brew but the hops in this one aren’t subtle enough for me.

2013 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Beer is a loose term regarding this not so disatant cousin to cherry robitussin. It pours to a pinkish hued gold. The killer resembles a wine with a tartness that offsets the extreme sweetness. I really like the intensity of the katana weilding fruit warrior in the art work. To be honest it is a really good mead, but if you are looking for something with beer like quality to quench your thrist while you are lopping off the heads of your not so dead neighbors, then this one may not be the one for you.

Jabez Martinez • 4

First of all, I had to look up what a Cyser was… It is mead (fermented Juice). It had an apple scent but it poured a pink color. The apple flavor was the dominant flavor with just a little cherry. This beverage was just a little too sweet for me. It did have a 6% ABV which I couldn’t tell by just tasting. I could only drink one of these; it is more a desert beverage.

Nick D • 3

This gruesome libation pours a clear blush, rose. The scent of the apples is apparently only in the first whiff then the alcohol becomes noticeable and with the cherry tinge it transforms into an odor reminiscent of Chloraseptic spray. The cherry teamed up with the carbonation gives this hybridbeverage a zesty punch then the apple comes in and mellows the tone. The honey is minute in the mix. It is very creative but almost too sweet.

Budweiser Black Crown

Jabez Martinez • 4

I really liked the bottle and I’m glad Bud is putting something else out there. This was an amber colored beer, a little darker than your average Bud. Another 6% ABV beer which was good and I could taste the beechwood. This was a really smooth beer and had a light, malty and caramel flavor. It had nothing overly distinctive about it but pretty solid overall.

Nick D • 3.5 Christy Moore • 4.5

The royal imagery makes sense seeing how it was brewed by the king of beers, but it carries with it a bit of confusion in the title, seeing how it is a golden amber lager. I’m not sure why they christened her Black Crown ? I was expecting a stout however it is not even remotely qualifying in that realm. The smoothness that is claimed by the description however is an honest admonition when setting an expectation. I’ll leave it up to you to decide if this buds for you. To be honest it is not bad at all, but it doesn’t by any means stand out as exceptional for that matter either.

The color of this brew is nearly identical to its heftier cousin, vivid amber with the depth and clarity of a precious stone. The scent of the barley comes of very crisp and invigorating but manages to be sly and subtle as well. Distinctively smooth almost doesn’t cut it for the texture of this beer. It is like liquid velvet, a slight sweetness and the barley rises for a split-second hoorah then it is gone nearly without a trace. A solid beer but some might say too filtered.

Celebrate the Ides of March: The Bloody Caesar Cocktail • Celery salt • 2 dashes Tabasco sauce • 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce • Teaspoon of horseradish (optional) • 1½ ounces vodka • Clamato juice • Lime wedge • Choice of garnish: celery stalk, green bean and/or crispy bacon strip Prepare a Collins glass by wetting the rim with a lime wedge and then dipping the rim in a saucer of celery salt. Add about three ice cubes to the glass, then the Tabasco and Worcestershire. (Horseradish optional). Then stir, so that the flavors mingle with the ice. Add the vodka, then top off with Clamato and stir again.

March 1-10 – Teresa Paschke A passage from Paschke’s Artist Statement: My artwork utilizes surface design techniques of dyeing, embroidery, printing, and many other methods of manipulating cloth. I’ve become increasingly invested in the use of technology and its application within the fiber arts field. I’m intrigued by the expressive possibilities that exist when combining new tools with ancient and traditional practices; merging sophisticated technology such as digital

printing with the most modest ones—a needle and thread. Many of the processes I use, such as iron oxide transfer printing, recycled cloth that contains the byproduct (stains, marks, patterns) of earlier efforts, and photocopying directly onto cloth, suggest a relationship between rational and organic order, nature and culture, nostalgia and faith. Thread is used much like a pencil or pen and stitching serves as a form of notation to reinforce ideas about ‘women’s work,’ gender and identity. Dashes, circles, and scribbled lines appear as personal hieroglyphics that, in daily life, often take the form of grocery lists, recipes, and checkbook ledgers. March 16-31 – Amy Brier/ Roliqueries Carved directly in stone, my work combines traditional carving techniques with contemporary art ideas such as public interaction and appropriation. While my main means of production is carving, I do not limit my efforts to a single “signature” medium. Instead, I move between various media such as glass, stone, paper, metal and sand. My art is unique on many levels. For example, in the Roliquery series, every image carved is either in the negative, which when printed becomes positive, or vice versa. The carved stone is a tool in the creation of an image, rather than being simply a singular art object; it impresses the fluid and fugitive sand with an image from the fixed and permanent stone. By interacting with my carvings people are moved from passive consumption of art as commodity to an active contemplation of contemporary art with a playful touch. The opening reception is March 16 at 5 p.m.

The Croods DreamWorks Animation It’s time to stop surviving and learn how to live! SCREEECH and CRASH! That’s not a pterodactyl slamming into a tree - it’s the sound of Grug’s brain crashing to a hault after facing the truth: at some point in your life, if you’re going to live and I mean really live, you gotta leave the comfy cave! Grug (Nicholas Cage) is a typical over-protective dad who says things like, “New is always bad” and “Never not be afraid.” Cut him some slack, though - he’s kept his family safe and sound in a world without burglar alarms. That is, until now. After their cave is destroyed by an earthquake, the family plummets into a brand new (beautiful) world where they must learn how to survive all over again. Along the way, they cross paths with a prehistoric genius named Guy (Ryan Reynolds). Guy’s futuristic visions clash with Grug’s conservative views. Of course, Grug’s teenage daughter Eep (Emma Stone) falls for him. Guy tells them that the earthquake that destroyed their home was just the beginning. Will they pull together in a strange new world outside of their comfort zone in time to save themselves from “The end of the world!?”...Da-da-daaa! Beautiful visuals with the conjoined artistic tones of Avatar and Madagascar are sure to delight. With DreamWorks behind the scenes and Chris Sanders directing (Lilo & Stitch, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast) I’m expecting a truly historic adventure!

Oz the Great and Powerful Disney The land you know. The story you don’t. The ending is no secret, but $200 million was spent making the prequel to one of the most beloved and well-told stories of all-time. So, maybe there is something more going on behind the curtain? The ethically-challenged magician Oscar Diggs (James Franco) is hurled away in a symbolic hot air balloon, courtesy of a famous Kansas twister. With hopes of becoming a great man, he finds himself in a truly magical world being threatened by; you guessed it, the Wicked Witch. Maybe the real twister here is, “Which Witch Is Which?” Glinda (Michelle Williams) looks to be a good witch, Theodora (Mila Kunis), also apparently a good witch and Evanora (Rachel Weisz) not-so-much. Tornado aside, I’m hoping for a twist here. All three witches are supposedly helping Oscar live up to the prophecy that a great wizard from Kansas will set things right, but he’s just a two-bit magician and not the Great and Powerful Oz whom they need to go face-to-face with. Can Oscar believe in himself enough and trust the powers around him, in time to become Oz the Great and Powerful and save them all? Apparently Robert Downey, Jr. and Johnny Depp were considered before Franco accepted the lead role. Franco has history with Director Sam Raimi from the shooting of The Spiderman Trilogy. I’m not sure if that or the fact that Warner Bros. still owns the original rights to the 1939 film is more interesting.

Here Comes the Boom

Columbia When you think Kevin James, you assume perfect comedic lines and rolling on the floor laugher. So going into it, I expected nothing less than the best from one of my personal favorite comedic actors. Unfortunately, I was let down…hard. James plays Scott Voss, a lazy biology high school teacher who decides to become a mixed-martial arts fighter in order to raise the $45,000 needed to keep the school’s music program, run by Henry Winkler’s character, up and running. James’ character figures this is the fastest way to raise the money because he gets paid win or lose, and he knows he is good at the latter. This movie is completely predictable from beginning to end: an immature man learns maturity from unsuspected sources and changes not only his life but the lives of children and, of course, gets the girl. So predictability is no stranger to comedies, and witty lines and funny scenes keep viewers entertained and laughing, but Here Comes the Boom did not make me laugh out loud once. In fact, the only scenes that made me smile were scenes in which former MMA fighter turned yoga instructor, Niko (played by Bas Rutton, who frequently appears in several other Kevin James movies) is training Scott in exchange for tutoring so that Russian-born-and-raised Niko can pass his United States citizenship exam. (It was mostly disappointing to be let down by “The Fonz.”) This is a feel-good movie that I am glad I saw once, but I don’t think I will be adding this one to my collection.

Seven Psychopaths

CBS Films When too many big names come together in one movie, the film is often overshadowed by their presence. This is not the case in Seven Psychopaths. Colin Ferrell is a screenwriter who only has two words to his new movie written, the title: “Seven Psychopaths.” In order to come up with his seven psychopathic characters, his friend Billy (played by Sam Rockwell, recently of Cowboys and Aliens) puts an ad in the newspaper looking for psychopaths’ stories. Woody Harrelson (most popularly known for his role on the television show Cheers) plays a gangster named Charlie with an unhealthy obsession for his little Shih Tzu. When that Shih Tzu is stolen by Ferrell’s oddball friends, blood is spilled in order to find answers. This movie is a little gory and definitely a little on the crazy side, but was overall pretty entertaining to watch. (Of course, anyone who enjoys hearing stories about people much crazier than they are will definitely enjoy Seven Psychopaths.) The downside to this movie is that the scenes were either very interesting and entertaining or very boring and totally snooze-worthy, which made it a little hard to sit still though. However, the storyline was well scripted by Martin McDonagh (also the director, who recently made his way into the big leagues with In Burges, also starring Colin Ferrell), and I am a sucker for words. Seven Psychopaths was definitely worth getting to the end and was overall entertaining to watch…for a psychopath. —Kristina Smith Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • March 2013

Crawl

cd reviews Adam Ant

Adam Ant is The Blueblack Hussar in Marrying The Gunner’s Daughter R.E.D. Distribution 4 out of 5 sta

He has also made guitar instructional videos for big name educators. WHAT THEY COVER/DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE: Hard-edge Rhythm & Grooves and we play some Blues. Gerry Smoot / Greg Martin / Karle Moulden / Michael Gough.

There’s a good chance that some of you reading this weren’t even alive the last time Adam Ant released an album – 17 years ago, in fact. The British post-punk icon has battled mental illness and become a father in the interim. Now he’s back with his strongest album since Friend or Foe in 1982. If nothing else, Ant deserves mention for the most intriguing title in recent memory. But the music is equally so, ranging from near-ballads to pseudo-industrial. Opening track and first single, “Cool Zombie” defies expectations with an unprecedented near-country twang. It’s a bit of a let-down after so many years but also a red herring; Ant quickly rights the ship with “Stay in the Game,” a raw, glam-inspired song that harkens back to his 1979 debut Dirk Wears White Sox. Heavy tracks like “Shrink” and “Hardmentoughblokes” make the 58-year-old sound young again; Ant’s vocals are full of vim and vigor and British eccentricity. Still, he never shrinks from prettiness. “Valentine’s” and “Vivienne’s Tears” are ripped from the headlines of his own life, backed by lilting chord progressions. Despite the long gap between albums, Ant hardly seems to have missed a beat - even if it’s not the tribal one he became famous for in the early 80’s.

Julia Kent Character The Leaf Label 5 stars

As a former member of the cello-based Rasputina and highly emotive Antony and the Johnsons, Julia Kent became an integral creative partner, both writing and arranging material. But while she thrived in a group setting, she also sensed a need to be in full control of the process. Two solo albums, Delay (2007) and Green and Grey (2011), gave Kent the autonomy to develop a string-driven, loop-based sound underpinned by field recordings from airports and nature. Character continues in this vein, culling the best elements from both albums. All 10 instrumentals stand on their own merit as well as contribute to the album’s majestic, funereal flow; the death march is chilling yet unavoidably alluring. As Kent’s strings slowly build to a ghostly crescendo on tracks like “Intent,” the accompanying vibraphone and choral effect compound the unease. “Tourbillon” accentuates Kent’s past affiliation with Rasputina, grounded by an eerie string-loop straight out of The Omen. Darkest of all is “Kingdom.” It slowly bleeds out while random metal-on-metal strikes echo in the mix.

Kent’s relentless dirge may be too suffocating for some, but she does end the album with a hint of hope. “Nina and Oscar” is the musical embodiment of beauty and the perfect end- note for a black celebration.

The Delta Saints

Death Letter Jubilee Self-released via Kickstarter 4 out of 5

In the musical climate of Mumford & Sons and the Black Keys, the Delta Saints fit in seamlessly. But they also have a lyrical dark side that sets them apart from the pack. Two EP’s and a tireless tour schedule have helped to build a devoted following both here and in Europe. After campaigning for a full-length release last year, fans ultimately funded Death Letter Jubilee through Kickstarter. It was money well-spent. “Jezebel” crawls in from the backwoods, desperate for salvation. The sound is completely stripped-down with homemade percussion recorded in some far off room, and a lone acoustic guitar strumming the blues. Vocalist Ben Ringel wrings sweat and tears from lines like ‘Sweet Jezebel / won’t you tell me what it’s like to be straight from Hell.’ The driving “Boogie” resurrects the beat and wails with free-wheeling harmonica; it’s a perfect example of how the band breathes new life into old school, simple chord progressions. Another down-home rocker, “Devil’s Creek” offers fair warning to the reckless: ‘Don’t dip your feet in the Devil’s Creek.’ The Delta Saints may not have the commercial ambition of their peers, but the undiluted blues of Death Letter Jubilee should secure more than a cult following.

Jason Lee McKinney Band Troubadours, Vagabonds, & Thieves Self-released 4 out of 5

Jason Lee McKinney is right at home on his latest album. After tracks on 2010’s Strangers, Stages, & Cheap Hotels received airplay on The Country Network, he took commercial concerns out of the equation and began writing new material free from expectations. Troubadours, Vagabonds, & Thieves is the product of this approach. Never has McKinney sounded so comfortable. It’s as if the tape just happened to be running while he and some friends sat around strumming guitars and playing fiddles. “Long Long Gone” has a swagger and insistent beat as McKinney sings about escaping to Mexico and leaving the world far behind. “Strangest Places” is a real standout, a down-tempo acoustic song framed by banjo and simple but affecting lyrics: ‘I’ve found faith in the strangest places / and I’ve seen hope on stranger’s faces / and I’ve learned love from simple graces.’ McKinney never overreaches vocally, delivering his words with warmth and ease. His tone is as rich and assured as today’s country music stars. In “Whole Lotta Texas,” McKinney proclaims ‘I’m just a simple Midwestern boy…but there’s a whole lotta Texas in me.’ It’s an apt summation of his music – natural and low-key yet destined for something bigger.

—Thomas Ellis

The newest morsel from eccentric and vocal specter Mr. Maynard James Keenan’s side project is sweet (and a bit salty) indeed. It sports two new tracks from the band that go from industrial sludge to celestial trance and back again. The album’s outright lascivious nature is sealed in refined latex that subtly seduces and teases. The two covers on the album are on-point and interesting as well. This EP is sly eroticism with sharp digital trim.

The Bolts

Wait ‘til we’re Young Bolts Broadcasting Co.

This album has some appealing aspects, a consistent pleasantly rounded bass line, smooth vocals and some catchy choruses but it is all under a commercial guide that is way too squeaky clean. It has a manufactured feel reminiscent of the boy bands of the 90’s. The band takes the sealed, pristine and artificial aura of Hollywood and makes it audible. It is sappy and will inspire madness if focused on/listened to long enough.

Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite Get Up! Stax Records

This musical super-duo take the listener back to the Golden Age of blues Listen hard enough, and hints of raw pheromones, acrid smoke and cheap perfume begin to infiltrate the nostrils. Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite rekindle the spirit of olden days in a new generation with slow, marching heartbreakers to rollicking, harmonica-laden jams. The album stays interesting with elements of playfulness and straight storytelling. This is a must have for blues fans!

Dead Space 3

I

saac Clarke has returned along with his emotional and psychological baggage, in Visceral Game’s latest installment of the Dead Space series. He is a widower with the scars of waging war in the most nefarious corners of space against a repugnant, relentless alien enemy. Clarke has proven his resolve and bravery time and time again but in the third part of the series his nerves of steel will be tested in a whole new forge. Clarke must now face a human threat as well: The Unitologists. They are a group of religious extremists who worship twisted energy pillars called “markers” which actually transform humans into Necromorph monsters. He will also face the desolate arctic wasteland of the marker’s home planet Tau Volantis. This planet is home to new breeds of Necromorph monsters, one of which are “feeders,” details aside, they dilate the pupils, chill the spine and make the heart race. Clarke will explore the planet to discover how to end the threat of the marker and the Necromorphs once and for all. The frozen landscape of Tau Volantis is epic and clean. The graphic design in all environments is sharp and very detail. The player can’t help but notice the smooth movement of Clarke as he sprints or as he reloads his weapon. Even the monsters move with stilted but savage fluidity. The cut scenes and gameplay are melded together without a hitch and the characters and dialogue are very engaging. One of the most intense and immersive sequences in any game I’ve ever played occurs when Clarke and his team breach the atmosphere of Tau Volantis. The equipment and armor Clarke has at his disposal are as varied and deadly as they are customizable. The player can even create his or her own weapons from spare parts using a blueprint. The upgrades for armor, air, stasis (think telekinesis) and weapons are just as varied. This game boasts accessible controls, co-op campaign and ultimate adventure, all in a manner that makes A Nightmare on Elm Street look like Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood. Dead Space 3 delivers in a momentous way. —Mr. Farthington
