lthough the final curtain appears to be closing on Robert’s Stadium, this going-away party seems to just be getting started. Kenny Chesney will bring his “Goin’ Coastal” tour and special guest Uncle Kracker to what may be the last concert ever to be showcased at this iconic Evansville structure.

Kenny Chesney has recorded 15 albums, resulting in more than 30 top ten singles. Born March 26, 1968, Chesney graduated from East Tennessee State University with a degree in Advertising. After graduation, he moved to Nashville. His performances in local clubs led to his signing with Capricorn Records. When Capricorn Records dissolved its country music division, he signed with the BNA Records Label, part of Sony Music in Nashville, TN, and the rest is history. Kenny Chesney is no stranger to recognition and awards. He is the recipient of six Academy of Country Music awards, six Country Music Association awards, and has been honored four times with the coveted Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year award. Chesney’s first album, In My Wildest Dreams, was released in 1994, sold more than 10,000 copies and resulted in two top singles, The Tin Man and Whatever It Takes. Year after year, hit after hit, Chesney songs soar to the top of the charts. Each album release continues to launch lead singles that rapidly make their way to the top of the charts, escalating sales and making Chesney one the top touring county music acts in the country. Evansville was one of Chesney’s first tour sites. In that first show, he wowed concert attendees and in the following years has continued to perform for sold-out crowds. Chesney has never forgotten the warm welcome he received, during

the early years, from Evansville fans; therefore, it’s fitting that a Kenny Chesney concert would usher in the end of an era for Robert’s Stadium. Chesney is not the only superstar coming to the stage to bid the decades goodbye. Special guest Uncle Kracker will also perform; his singles include Follow Me, Smile, and Drift Away. His country and top 40-style music has replaced his early performances in the rap genre. Matthew Shafer, a.k.a. Uncle Kracker, was born in Mississippi but raised in Michigan. He began playing turntables with a then-unknown performer named Kid Rock in 1994. Shafer, adopting the name Uncle Kracker, released his first solo album, Double Wide, produced by Kid Rock, on June 30, 2001. Two singles were released from the Double Wide album: Follow Me and Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah. His second album, No Stranger to Shame, was released on August 27, 2002. His singles included Drift Away; In A Little While; and Memphis Soul Song. Soon after the release of his second album, Kracker teamed up with Chesney on the hit single and subsequent video, When the Sun Goes Down. His third album, Seventy Two and Sunny, abandoned his previous rap style and showcased his country genre. This album featured two singles, Rescue and Writing It Down. With album sales selling more than 200,000 copies, Uncle Kracker had found his niche. Recent album

Brings Excitement Back to School

s the first day of school rapidly approaches and summer vacation draws to a close, one begins to sense excitement in the air. Although excitement may not typically be the descriptive word chosen by most students to describe the beginning of the school year, the opportunities available to EVSC students may just change that perception.

Dr. David Smith, recently named Superintendent for the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, has a passion for education, a clear vision of expectation and the drive to ensure that EVSC students are educated and prepared to become the leaders of tomorrow. Dr. Smith is an Evansville native, former EVSC student and graduate of Reitz High School. He holds a Doctorate of Education in Leadership from Oakland City University, Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in music education from the University of Evansville, and a degree in Secondary Administration and Supervision and an Education Specialist degree from Indiana State University. Dr. Smith began his tenure with the EVSC more than 29 years ago and has served both inside and outside the classroom as a teacher, band director, principal and, most recently, as Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Business Affairs. He also played a key role in helping develop the financial planning process for the EVSC Strategic Plan, which continues to successfully move forward. Asked about his new role, Dr. Smith stated, “I would like to thank the

community for their overwhelming support. This is a wonderful, yet humbling experience and I am proud to be able to serve this great community.” News 4U had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Smith and Chief Communications Oﬃcer, Marsha Jackson, to discuss the changes, advancements and opportunities offered to children enrolled in the EVSC. The EVSC offers a variety of new and continuing educational programs including:

New North High School and Junior High School

The new North Junior High School will begin August 10, 2011 for all 7th and 8th grade students. North High School students are slated to begin attending the new high school in January of 2012.

EVSC Elementary Instrumental Music Education

According to Dr. Smith, “Adding Instrumental Music to our Elementary Education platform has generated an overwhelming and positive response from students and parents. Statistics prove that students enrolled in music education score higher on tests, develop discipline and have higher academic outcomes, and we are excited to offer this program.”

Early College High School

Housed at IVY Tech, freshman math and English classes are offered and taught by EVSC teachers. Sophomores may take a college level course along with their high school classes. student, calling them her “zumbettes” and “sweaxy girls” (sweaty and sexy). Because of her passion for dance and genuine heart, Heidi’s classes have grown rapidly in popularity. After spending only one class with her, you get the sense that she cares about your weight loss goals as if they were her own. To prepare for a class, aside from cool and comfortable clothing, you must first get the proper footwear. Cross-training or dance-style shoes that offer support work best for the multiple side-to-side moves. Running shoes can put unwanted pressure on your knees and ankles, as they are better for foot mobility than for stability. The next thing you’ll want to bring is a hand towel. Sweating may not be the most glamorous thing, but it proves you’re burning calories and getting a good workout. That also doesn’t mean you want your sweat running into your eyes. Because of all this release of moisture, you’ll want to bring enough water to keep you hydrated. One water bottle can get the job done, but something bigger, like a half-gallon jug, isn’t a bad idea. Class starts off with a warm-up song that gets your muscles stretched out and ready to work. This song consists of basic movements while introducing a few dance steps. From there, the next 55 minutes are jam-packed with non-stop movement to beats including salsa, Latin and English hip-hop. What I like most about this workout is that following Heidi’s exact movements is not always necessary. The music is infectious, fun and, as long as you try your best and keep your hips and feet moving, you’ll walk away feeling exhilarated. Wash Your Car The Right Way

ashing and waxing your car not only protects its factory finish but also preserves its resale value. Yet many people either ignore the task – or use shortcuts that do more harm than good. Luckily, the pros at Lucas Oil Center gave us tips to ensure you do the job the right way – the first time. First, vacuum the entire interior of the car – this reduces the risk of spreading abrasive dirt to the car’s exterior. Remove the floor mats and vacuum them outside. You may even want to shampoo them and leave them to dry in the sun. To get a good clean on your interior, use Lucas Slick Mist Interior Detailer. This product can be used on all types of interiors from leather to vinyl, as well as consoles and trims. Get your interior looking like new in one easy step. Next, we move to the outside by wetting the body, wheels and tires. Use a spray nozzle on your hose and let the water run gently to loosen dirt. Don’t forget the wheels. Wash the tires and wheels first. Tires, and especially wheels, require a stronger type of cleaner than you’ll use on the body. Use a brush or wheel-scrubber to get to areas that a sponge or wash mitt cannot reach on these areas. Start with a clean bucket – and then mix up a cleaning solution using a high-quality car shampoo. Avoid using dishwashing detergent and most other shampoos, which are too harsh and can strip wax and important oils from the car’s finish. Work from the

Apply plenty of suds with 100% cotton or terry cloth towel. Use back and forth motions and continually rinse each section to ensure that soapy water carries away dirt residue that can dry on the car’s surface. For the final rinse, hose the car with a medium flow of water. This will allow large sheets of water to form and to roll off the vehicle, making drying easier. Dry the car completely with an artificial chamois or clean cotton towels. An artificial chamois is less abrasive and more absorbent than a real chamois, but can still trap grit. Never allow water to dry on the finish. Preserve your car’s shine, protect the surface and help it look showroom-ready by waxing your vehicle at least twice a year. Spring and Fall are the most common times to do so. There are many excellent one-step wax products on the market now that are easy to apply and remove. The Lucas Slick Mist Speed is just one of these products. Best of all, you can apply this to a wet or dry surface and still get amazing results. ur canine and feline friends are more than mere pets; they are integral parts of our families. Therefore, it is imperative to identify family lifestyle characteristics and consider the following factors BEFORE making a decision to bring a four-legged companion into an existing family dynamic: • Time investment for exercise, brushing and cleaning pet areas and litter boxes • Children, teenagers, elderly parents or other pets in the home • Expenses associated with pet ownership, such as regular veterinarian care, food and upkeep • Unanimous family decision • Agreement of all family members to assume pet care responsibilities • Pet kept inside or out? (It is recommended that pets be kept inside, especially during excessively hot or cold weather) • Outside pets must have shelter, plenty of clean water and access to shade

Pets seem to mirror their owners’ behaviors and personalities and even recognize feelings of excitement, sadness or disappointment. They can be a great addition to a family, once the aforementioned steps are analyzed. Pet adoption is a great way to incorporate a loving pet into your family. Both the Vanderburgh Humane Society (VHS) and the Warrick Humane Society (WHS) offer sheltering services, pet adoption, spaying/neutering services and pet food assistance for families experiencing economic trials. We enlisted the expertise of Kendall Paul, Executive Director of the VHS, and Nancy Lybarger, Director of the WHS, and asked them to share some information regarding pet adoption, pet care, their respective facilities and how individuals can help. VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR—KENDALL PAUL VHS, founded in 1957, shelters more than 4,000 dogs and cats, along with several rabbits and guinea pigs, annually. So far, in 2011, we have placed more than 933 pets in loving homes. We encourage families to come in, bring their current pets and visit one-on-one with the animals, to help offset future incompatibility issues. The VHS is thrilled to have received the prestigious 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for the second year in a row. A 4-star rating assures donors that their contributions are used the way they intended, and this is such an honor, as only 19% of charities earn two consecutive 4-star ratings. VHS offers an on-site spay/neuter and vaccine clinic open to the community; humane education; facility tours; the Pet Assisted Therapy Program, for nursing home residential visits; and the Safe Pet Program, helping victims of domestic violence. Adoption fees include: implanted ID microchip, upto-date vaccines and spay/neuter fees. Spaying/neutering can help control pet populations, prevent negative cycle behaviors and, in some cases, help alleviate aggressive tendencies, since “approximately 92% of fatal dog attacks involved male dogs, 94% of which were not neutered,” according to americanhumane.org.

Surrendered animals remain at our facility until they are adopted. Although we have limited space and can only accept owner-surrendered pets, we proudly collaborate with other area shelters, breed rescues and humane societies during times of overcrowding. We can house approximately ten dogs and ten cats, along with our litter capacity, which is around seven or eight sets of puppies and kittens, depending upon size and breed. WHS offers a Grooming Clinic open to the community. With the exceptionally hot weather, many people think shaving a dog provides them with relief from the heat; we recommend regular brushing instead, as shaving can expose tender skin

to the sun, resulting in sunburn. We also offer a Junior Volunteer Program, a website showcase of animals available for adoption, a Home Away Pet Lodge and more. Adoption fees include up-to-date vaccines and spay/neuter fees, and we partner with a local veterinarian to provide spay/neuter services throughout the communities we serve. During this economic downturn, WHS has experienced an increase in surrenders at a time when donations have decreased. Section 529 College Savings Plans (529 plans)

are state sponsored college/higher education savings programs established under Section 529(b) of the Internal Revenue Code. 529 plans were designed to help families set aside funds on a tax-advantaged basis to pay for future college costs. Although there are limitations based on plan selection and residency, some of the income tax benefits of 529 plans include tax-deferred growth of investments and tax-free distributions to the beneficiary for “qualified higher education expenses.” State-tax advantages may also be applicable to investors using a plan sponsored by their own state, but this will vary from state to state.

Qualified Higher Education Expenses (QHEE)

vansville’s two Harbor Bay Seafood Restaurants, owned by Paul Stieler, are located near Stieler’s Showplace Cinemas North and East.

Chef Jasone Parsons, once the owner of the downtown Tin Fish, has plenty of experience cooking great seafood. His menus are packed with tasty and original offerings of fish, shellfish, and calamari, served up fried or grilled in platters, sandwiches, wraps, tacos, and salads. Parsons whips up plenty of non-seafood offerings too, for the meat eaters in your family. I recently stopped in at the northern location for dinner early on a weeknight; the restaurant already had a number of tables full, and more people stopped in as I was dining. After taking a moment to peruse the lengthy menu, I chose a cup of Gator Gumbo ($2.95) and the grilled mahi mahi platter with Mango Salsa ($9.95). The gumbo was thick, rich, and mildly spicy, with coins of good-quality smoky andouille sausage, lots of okra, and large chunks of gator meat. The gator was well-prepared; it was very tender, with the appearance and texture of white meat chicken but the flavor of crawfish.

My mahi entree included two sides, and I requested a house salad as one. I was pleasantly surprised. The iceberg, carrot and red cabbage mix was enhanced with dark green romaine lettuce and topped with a generous pile of shredded cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes, and a thick slice of cucumber. It was large for a “side salad,” and everything was very fresh and crisp. It came accompanied by a soft, warm roll and butter. My only real disappointment with the meal was the absence of a low-fat salad dressing choice. On the upside, the balsamic vinaigrette I chose was well-balanced and delicious. I was likewise impressed with my mahi plate. The side of mixed vegetables included broccoli, zucchini, yellow squash, and carrot, all obviously fresh (not frozen), cooked just until tender, and served in a light butter sauce. I noticed a couple of caraway seeds as I enjoyed the vegetables, which

gave the dish more character than plain steamed veggies and butter. Mahi mahi is a steaky fish that has some chew. My filet was done just right, flaky but still moist. The mango salsa included fresh diced tomato and pineapple, and complimented the fish very well. It was a visually appealing plate as well, with a slice of lemon, curly kale, and a sprinkle of red cabbage confetti. The price of $9.95 seemed very low for the size and quality of the entree. In the past I’ve enjoyed the mahi mahi sandwich at Harbor Bay. You can request it grilled or fried, and the firm, good-sized filet nicely fills out the toasted wheat bun. The grilled version is a very satisfying option for those making healthy choices. The menu varies slightly between the two restaurants. The north side location offers lobster and pastas not available at the smaller east side kitchen. Reservations are accepted in both locations. The North Side Harbor Bay is located at 4428 N. vansville chef Mark Ricer is rocking the kitchen at Lorenzo’s Bistro and Bakery with fresh pastas, new lunch entrees, and amazing specials. Ricer is from Evansville and has been a chef here most of his life. “I started working for Chef Ellis at the Petroleum Club in 1986, as a sauté cook,” said Ricer. “He’s one of my strongest mentors. I wanted so bad to be a sous chef, so he started teaching me the French mother sauces and how to use spices.” After learning the ropes at the Petroleum Club, Ricer spent a few years cooking at a country club in Texas. He then returned to Indiana to be executive chef at The Red Geranium in New Harmony. More recently, he acted as executive sous chef at Evansville Country Club for eight years. Now, at Lorenzo’s, with his skills again available to the public, Ricer is implementing some exciting changes to menu. “It’s just going wonderfully here,” he said. “The menu has a lot of Italian elements, so I’ve been doing some new fresh-flavored pastas. We make saffron, peppercorn, and sundried tomato pastas every day. I tried a spinach pasta; it was nice and green, but it didn’t have much spinach flavor, so I added some leeks to it and came up with a lyonnaise-type pasta that is really delicious.” New lunch entrees, including a southwestern grilled chicken sandwich with black bean salsa on Lorenzo’s jalapeno cheddar bread and a panko-breaded pork tenderloin sandwich with ham, arugula, Tailgator honey mustard, and caramelized onion, are already debuting to high acclaim, and a new dinner menu will be in the works soon. Ricer is also cutting his own steaks and chops, rather than using cryovac portions. “Last week, I ran a 22-ounce porterhouse special,” he said. “I’m an Evansville native, and I know what people love to eat here. The specials we come up with sell like crazy.” Who wouldn’t love specials such as Charbroiled Chicken with Shitaki Mushrooms, Red Peppers, Parmesan Cheese and Garlic Goat Cheese Cream over Handmade Saffron Pasta ($22); Blackened Scallops and Shrimp with Black Bean, Corn, Sweet Pepper and Avocado Salsa over Broccolini and Applewood Bacon Polenta ($28); or Fennel

John’s Catholic Church and School opened in 1942 with a mission to serve people from any and all geographic areas and was one of the first Catholic churches in Evansville to serve a primarily African-American congregation. Upon accepting her appointment in 1996, Sister Jane Nesmith arrived in Evansville, only to discover that she did not have funds to hire a staff, pay expenses or implement the outreach programs she envisioned. However, Sister Jane possesses inspiring Faith, profound dedication and admirable perseverance. With God’s provision, she secured a grant from St. Mary’s Hospital while exploring ways to utilize the old school building as a new educational site. In 1997, the old school building was officially designated the Neighborhood Educational Enrichment Development Site (NEEDS) It now provides numerous outreach services for low/moderate income families within the Tri-State community, including: • Free weekend childcare • Soul Empowerment Fitness & Nutrition-preventative healthcare, to help reduce the risk of developing disabilities and diseases [NOTE: If “Soul Empowerment Fitness & Nutrition-preventative healthcare” is the full and formal name of the program, then each word should be capitalized.] • Low-income housing options • Food for the Hungry – a Sunday soup kitchen, open every week, year-round 70 years in the making, St. John’s 70th Anniversary Celebration will feature guest speakers Ron Glass and Joe Dulin: As a child, Ron Glass, acclaimed actor and Evansville native, attended St. John Elementary School. He holds a B.A. in drama and a B.A. in literature from the U of E. Glass is best known for his portrayal as Detective Ron Harris in the popular 1970’s sitcom Barney Miller. “I am very, very excited about the opportunity to see so many old friends. It has been more than 30 years since I began my early journey in Evansville and I am really looking forward to this celebration,” Glass told News 4U. Joe Dulin, educator/retired principal, also attended St. John Elementary School. He converted to Catholicism while in the 8th grade and later graduated from Mater Dei in 1950. He received a B.S. in physical education and history from St. Joseph’s College and an M.S. in Administration and Supervision from Indiana State University. He also founded the NAAPID (National African-American Parent Involvement Day) and served as special advisor to presidential candidate Al Gore in 2000. Xingu Black Beer (Santa Catarina, Brazil)

Todd Zachritz – 3.0

This exotic and curious import pours black, as promised, with a decent tan head of foam. Superb lace, as well. The nose brings on malty aromas -- mostly a caramel sweetness. The taste is also quite sweet on the palate, with a slight roasted, but never to the point of a stout or porter. I get a hint of skunkiness, too, but maybe that’s just me, wondering how fresh a beer from Brazil could be after being shipped to America, stored in a warehouse, and then shipped to Indiana. Anyway, lack of freshness aside, this one’s a decent brew.

Alison Sigman – 4.0

Keeps to its name and pours a dark, almost black shade with a caramel head. It almost looks like Coca Cola, without being so heavily carbonated. I am surprised that it doesn’t carry the heavy flavor that I would expect to find for such a dark drink. It has a smooth, drinkable quality with dark chocolate and coffee notes, as well as light hops and malts.

Margaritaville Spiked Lemonade (Baldwinsville, NY)

with the crisp taste of lemons. But like all the others, it had an odd twang to it which I didn’t care for.

Alison Sigman – 4.0

Not really what I would call a beer; it pours more like tonic water than beer. The taste is 100% lemon. Definitely a good choice for a long hot day in early August. To the unassuming tongue, there seems to be little to no alcohol, but this drink sneaks up on you. Probably the way Jimmy Buffet envisioned it.

Schlafly - BavarianStyle Weissbier (St. Louis, MO)

Jabez Martinez – 4.0

This is a dark brown, almost black beer. I could taste some coffee and chocolate but it also has a soda flavor to it, which I found a little odd. For a darker beer it was very crisp and pretty light. It is imported from Brazil, and I can’t remember the last time, if ever, I’ve had a beer from Brazil. Overall a good beer, which I plan to drink more of.

A curiosity among this month’s beers, this “malt beverage” looks like a tasty Summertime lemonade, but smells of lemon furniture polish. The “flavor” (and I use that term loosely here) is that of floor wax, laced with a dash of Lysol disinfectant. Absolutely despicable, this “drink” prompted a quick drain pour. Run, don’t walk, from this chemicallyimbalanced beverage.

Jabez Martinez – 3.0

I am not a fan of the spiked lemonade and this one tasted like all the others. A white, cloudy drink

Ah, this one’s a faithful American interpretation of a classic German wheat beer, and a tasty one it is. Pours a cloudy yellow, with a thick head of white foam and limited lace. I get aromas of spice and wheat malts. Zesty and appealing! More spices in the flavor profile, with hints of clove, bubblegum, and orange peel. As mentioned before, this one’s as German as can be, while not being German. Anything from Schlafly is a good choice, and this is no exception.

Jabez Martinez – 4.5

I will say it again, I love Schlafly and this is my new favorite beer. I am a big unfiltered wheat fan and this is the one to buy. The beer has a nice cloudy golden color with the scent of cloves, bananas and malts. The sweet bready flavor hits you first and the other flavors blend in. The beer is worth every penny.

Redhook Long Hammer IPA (Seattle, WA)

Jabez Martinez – 3.5

This is a dark golden beer with decent carbonation. I am not much of an IPA fan but this beer was on the lighter side of IPA’s. It had a nice dry hops flavor and had some citrus flavor with some piney hops thrown in. A very drinkable IPA.

Alison Sigman – 5.0

I had the pleasure of tasting this at the Schlafly brewery in St. Louis. Very much what a German wheat beer should be. It is bubbly, light, creamy, and smooth. The smell is on point with the taste, as citrus, light cloves and malty flavors waft from the bottle and slip down the throat. Best enjoyed from the bottle, after a long day of work,on a hot day in late summer.

Walter mccartY visits evansville

alter McCarty made his name as both a player and a coach in the NBA, but his upcoming performance at the Victory Theatre on August 27th will showcase a completely different set of skills—his R&B singing. On the court, McCarty was known for his flexibility, playing four different positions. The Evansville native made his mark on and off the court with teams like the Suns, the Clippers, the Knicks and the Pacers, but since 2003 has been working on a music career as well. After his first release, Moment for Love, McCarty took several years to work as an assistant coach and to hone his craft. He is currently touring with his sophomore record, the self-produced Emotionally. Though he’s still new in the R&B world, some of the community’s most lauded producers and songwriters are working with him; his resume boasts performances with groups like Destiny’s Child and Jagged Edge, a co-writing credit with Tyrese, and work with production team The Underdogs. Known for writing both thoughtful and sensual songs, McCarty has said he feels like there’s something in his music for everyone. “I truly believe this music is pleasing to everyone who listens, no matter what genre music you might like. Emotionally is a feel-good record that’s appealing, all-together mature and sexy,” says McCarty. Though most of the music is original, McCarty also tends towards the familiar on his new release, including a soul-drenched version of the Bee Gee’s standard “How Deep Is Your Love.” Given that he’s already known for his live harmonies and that this is a hometown show, the performance should be a mustsee for R&B and dance music fans. ince 1974, SWIRCA & More has served the Tri-State area, caring for the elderly, as well as persons of any age with a disability. While the state and federal governments help with funding, this amount is not enough to care for all individuals in need. Each year, SWIRCA & More hosts its annual Southern Indiana Winery, Brewery & Spirits Festival. The fundraiser supports the organization’s programs and services; now in its eighth year, it surpasses those festivals like it. What sets this festival apart is its inclusion of spirits. Bourbons featuring Old Pogue, Four Roses, Heartland, distillers and Tipton Spirits, as well as margaritas, will add a tropical air to the festivities. Over 100 brews, microbrews and craft-brewed beers will be available from over 30 breweries from eight states, including Colorado, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, and California. There will also be over 100 wines from 10 award-winning local and national wineries. Local cover band “Better Than Nothin” will provide sound stylings of the best Top 40 music. And don’t forget culinary selections from local restaurants and caterers. This will be available at a minimal cost, and all proceeds benefit SWIRCA & More. At the end of the evening, taxi rides will be available for those in need, with compliments of Woods and Woods. So come to SWIRCA & More, located at 16 West Virginia St. on August 27 for an evening of great drinks, great food, and great entertainment. On Danielle’s 21st birthday, Matt put his proposal plan into action. Matt informed Danielle they were going on an Easter egg hunt for her birthday present. This didn’t seem strange because Matt always has games for Danielle to play before actually getting to open her presents. After they walked across the Lafayette Bridge toward the restaurant, Matt walked Danielle down a flight of stairs by the old train station. He then said there was no present hidden for her to find and instead asked for her hand in marriage, stating that it was the perfect time because it would make her 21st birthday just as special and memorable as his was. (They met on Matt’s 21st birthday.) After a lot of hugs and kisses, they walked to Red Seven where they had planned on having dinner. Danielle was surprised by congratulations from her parents and Matt’s parents, which brought on the inevitable waterworks (all being captured on film by Matt’s dad). They then celebrated the engagement and Danielle’s birthday with their parents and friends at a local bar.

hase Eaden is a normal, vibrant two-year-old who, after suffering dizzy spells in May of 2011, was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a highly malignant brain tumor that mostly affects children. Chase is now enduring extreme bouts of nausea and headaches, as well as constant dizzy spells. His prognosis for a cancer-free recovery is 25% after he completes six months of intense chemotherapy. He is too young for radiation. Studies have shown that children under the age of five who receive radiation treatment experience extreme I.Q./brain function deterioration. Currently, Chase is seeking treatment at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. Chase is in cycle 3 of a six-cycle chemotherapy program. The last cycle, cycle 6, is referred to as rhe “Big Gun Cycle.” This is where the doctors throw everything they have at the cancer in one “push” to put it into remission. During this time, Chase is likely to endure isolation, only having contact with his mom for one hour a day. This is projected to begin around Christmas. After Chase goes into remission, it is his mother Kimberly Eaden’s hope that a hospital will accept Chase into a study program. Insurance does not cover any of these costs.

The difference in winning cash and taking home the league championship trophy could come down to taking a chance on the “sleeper” early in the draft or by stunning (and perhaps making angry) your fellow owners by taking the first defense available in the fifth round. Never, in recent memory, has a draft been more important to your team’s success than this year. With the extended NFL lockout, no teams have been able to have Rookie Camps and it appears that summer training camps are greatly shortened. For some Mondaymorning-quarterbacks, this signals a possible downturn in the quality of football to be played this season. There are several ways that fantasy owners prepare for their drafts. Fantasy veterans may rely on past formulas to field their best roster and some fantasy rookies may spend hours upon hours pouring over stats, projections and analysis. Due to the NFL lockout and the possibility of losing preseason and perhaps even regular season games, getting the best value out of your draft picks is of the utmost importance. The first thing to evaluate is your league’s point structure. In most leagues, running backs are your best source of point income. Running backs can score by the number of rushing yards gained, touchdowns scored, receiving yards, and in some per-touch leagues, receive points for carries and receptions. More touches mean more opportunities for touchdowns. With this lockout-shortened off-season, as well as many NFL teams moving to two-back systems, drafting the high-profile running backs could make the difference for your team. Maximize the early round picks with running backs. Of course, other owners in your league will use this formula as well. Your next objective is to find the best quarterback possible. Quarterbacks will have the next best opportunity to produce touchdowns and yardage. However, be disciplined and don’t take unnecessary risks on rookie or unproven signal callers. There are very few elite wide receivers in the NFL. If you feel you can take a sure-fire receiver in the early rounds, snatch them up; especially, if your players receive points for receptions. Most owners will wait until the final rounds to take their kickers and team defenses. It’s usually best to be the first owner to take a defense/special team; however, with limited point-earning potential, picking the best possible back up for other positions can prove invaluable. – Joel Easton

he man affectionately known by all as “Big Jon” is a big man with a huge heart, and one of the hardest working musicians I’ve ever known! Originally from Brownstown Indiana, Jon has had a lifelong love affair with music, which has taken him across the country and overseas to Italy, Turkey, Spain and Denmark. Even a partial list of people Jon has played music with would fill this page. But from playing with Marty Brown years ago, which led to gigs on The Grand Ole Opry stage, to Hee Haw, a couple of videos on CMT, to some of the many local bands like Blues for U, The Beat Daddys, The Shagadelics, The Amazing Soul Crackers, The Blues Co-op (with Boscoe France), and a regular gig with one of his best friends, Troy Miller, and Chris Cochram, Jon stays busy. He’s been at it for over 30 years and will be the first one in & the last one out of any gig he plays. Between playing with several local bands and projects, booking gigs, hauling musicians and gear to gigs all over the Tri-State area, the never ending cycle of loading in and out, and his session work, one wonders where he finds the time! Jon has studied his craft extensively, worked hard, and has become a beloved local musician who has made music his sole career. He is quick to credit his girlfriend, Peggy, for her support and “For just putting up with me!” Jon has been instrumental in and a fellow charter member of the brand new River Basin Blues Society, promoting and supporting our local Blues musicians. To truly get to know someone requires a peek into his soul. The following quote lets his soul shine and sums him up as a man: “It means more to me for people to see me as a decent human being than a great musician.” Q: Who have been your biggest musical influences? A: “My mom, Roberta Rochner, for the encouragement and support; Dick Parman, my high school band director, for the knowledge; and Glen Duncan, an incredible bluegrass fiddler and my first bass teacher. He taught me how to LISTEN. Everything is a musical influence if you listen. Music is a conversation. You have to listen as well as speak. The worst gigs are the ones where I can’t hear everyone on stage.” Q: Can you tell us one thing about yourself that most people wouldn’t know? A: “I cook a pretty mean ‘Ande Ki Kari’ (whole eggs in spicy tomato sauce).” Q: What advice would you have for kids interested in playing music? A: “Two words: Have fun! If there’s no joy in playing, then why do it? I’ve been ready to quit more times than I care to count, but when it comes right down to it, I can’t think of one thing I’d rather do for a living. If you’re talking about making it your

profession there’s one more bit of advice: Don’t limit your musical scope. The music you hate today might be paying your bills tomorrow.” Q: What is your normal gear set up for a gig? A: “It changes periodically. My Jazz Bass or 5-string Yamaha, an amp, and a 4-10” cab (no tweeter). Secret weapons are my Bellari tube compressor and flatwound strings. Now I have to kill you...”

cdreviews Grails “Deep Politics” album (Temporary Residence Limited)

4 stars Portland, Oregon’s Grails are a veteran instrumental outfit who specialize in spacious, moody psychedelic rock. “Deep Politics” is their sixth full-lengther, and it opens with “Future Primitive”-- a moody and textural guitar-scape that brings to mind a dusky Western expanse. It’s all very dramatic and cinematic, to be certain. The title track is piano-led chamber pop meets post-rock, full of mystery and tension. “Almost Grew My Hair” is a trippy and evolving psychedelic space monster, dynamically moving from David Gilmour-style rock solos to darker opium den haziness. This is some potent stuff, with the perfect balance of clarity and foggy abandon. Taken as a whole, “Deep Politics” takes the listener on a journey through foreign lands, natural landscapes, and mind-bending narcotic excursions, all safely and within a relatively concise 47 minutes. Superb work, and all worth exploring. – Todd Zachritz

Abigail Williams “In The Absence Of Light” album (Candlelight Records)

3 stars “In The Absence Of Light” is Abigail Williams’ second album, and though members continue to come and go, the band’s well-crafted symphonic black metal brings elements of classic metal to the (sacrificial) table. “Final Destiny Of The Gods” is a barn (or is it church?)-burner, and an amped-up standout, with a blurred attack of blast-beats and almost prog-rock melodics. “In Death Comes The Great Silence” is a doomy but melodic blur of black metal sorrow, as well. he Toddlers are an unconventional band: they didn’t declare a lead instrument until they absolutely had to, and even now, they share lead duties—both drummer John Gibson and guitarist Eric Ridenour write and sing. Perhaps that’s what creates the even, balanced sound they achieve on their new record, Magic Faces. Drummer John Gibson says that the band has changed a lot over the years: “For a while, we used to have a violin player-- that used to be our lead instrument… so when the solo would come around, it would be a violin solo,” he says. “But Eric worked really hard and became a lead guitarist. Our keyboardist [Erin Gibson] also does solos, and sometimes they trade off.”

By oscillating between rhythmic lead guitar and sparkling keyboard solos, The Toddlers are able to create a pop atmosphere that heralds back to the “Mr. Tambourine”-era Byrds. The difference between The Toddlers and most bands that evoke that sound is the range of topics they write about. “We just want to write interesting songs and perform them the best we can,” says Gibson. Magic Faces includes songs called “Brad’s School of Martial Arts” (unsurprisingly about a school of martial arts) and “Lukewarm Kool-Aid.” In fact, upon listening, one gets the impression that The Toddlers don’t play any music that doesn’t engage them on more than one level. Some of Ridenour’s songs, like the ethereal “Katie King” and “Brother Cain” make such obscure references that he clarifies his subjects in the liners notes. The music itself is full and rich; Gibson said that, in the seven years since their last record, they’ve been working on and off on Magic Faces to ensure the arrangements would be innovative and memorable. outh Carolina’s U.S. Christmas (here as USX) are at the height of their powers, it seems. Their last release, 2010’s “Run Thick In The Night”, was a masterpiece of spaced-out Americana-meets-post-rock.

And this follow-up EP/album is a monumental slab, as well. It’s a single 39-minute track that begins with a simple mantric riff. As the song progresses, listeners are treated to ambient landscapes, drifty space rock, Neil Young-style rockers, mighty, thunderous postmetal thump and mountain-jam stomp. Recurring melodic themes, and the moody violins of Meghan Mulhearn conspire to make this a singular audio journey. Sure, with the multiple personalities on display here, “The Valley Path” could have

been divided into a number of index points, but the reasoning here stands...it’s all one trip. It has it’s highs and lows, it’s ups and downs, but it’s all here, concluding with a nighttime grasshopper/locust serenade. Absolutely a monster of an album. Conny Ochs “Raw Love Songs” CD (Exile On Mainstream Records)

Debut solo release from a German singer/songwriter who recently toured and collaborated with doom/stoner metal legend Wino, “Raw Love Songs” is a rich and sonorous collection of just what the title implies. “Stampede, Stampede” is a lovely acapella opener, leading into the moving “Lily Of The Valley”, which channels Jeff Buckley. “Angels And Demons” reminds of both Buckley and Nick Cave, being full of tortured dark and raw emotion. “Good House” could almost be H.I.M. minus the glitter. The almost-blues of “Waiting For The Monster” are also effective. “Raw Love Songs” is quintessentially a dark acoustic folk album, and a good one at that. – Todd Zachritz

Dwarves “Born Again” CD (Greedy/MVD Audio)

The classic gutter-shock punk band is finally back, with their first new album since 2004. Including longtime members Blag Dahlia and Hewhocannotbenamed, among a cast of, well, many, it’s an energetic, trashy, and well-played selection of 18 sleaze-inspired rockers.

There are a plethora of great, catchy, and under-two-minute pop-punk songs here. In fact, there are 18 songs of them, all well-written and concise. Selfreverential? Sure. Indulgent? Not really. Dwarves’ strengths are their ability to write great songs while maintaining a real f-u attitude. The bonus DVD (included in some copies) is an extensive collection of live bootleg footage, promotional videos (both censored and uncut), and TV interviews. A worthy set from one of American punk’s most notorious acts. All hail the Dwarves! – Todd Zachritz

“Ugly Animals” CD 11 songs in 13 minutes, and fronted by Justin Pearson (The Locust), you know what to expect here. Yes, it’s an earful of clotted punk/grindcore madness. You get screaming, nihilistic hardcore, abrasive post-punk, and more of the same. It’s feral, anarchic, and primitive. “Ugly Animals” is an exercise in catharsis, pure and simple. Enjoyable. (Ipecac Recordings)

Soil Of Ignorance / Wadge

Hailing from Boston, this classic and early death/gore/punk metal band returns anew with this 11-song release (plus bonus unlisted tracks). But as new as this material may be, vocalist and founder John McCarthy passed away during the recording, so several cuts are present with guest vocalists respectfully finishing up in his absence. Despite this discontinuity, the album works well as a whole. Tracks like “Human Pinata” slow it down to almost doom-metal levels.“Pray Before You Die” echoes this sentiment...a churning metallic riff with more than a nod to classic punk ala Black Flag. “Field Trip” rages with a thrash-punk tempo, like if Megadeth covered Minor Threat. This is oldschool crossover that just isn’t heard much anymore, and a shame that is, as “Message From The Dead” is a killer album. Post Mortem’s punk-metal was never too well-known, but their legacy lives on, and here’s to hoping this posthumous release garners them some well-deserved notoriety. – Todd Zachritz

“Split 7” This split 7” features a pair of underground Canadian metal/grind bands who can shred well, thank you very much. Soil Of Ignorance’s side is a series of bursting, gutteral grindcore blasts that remind me of classic, early Napalm Death. Wadge, on the other side, are more crusty speed/thrash metal. A lot of fun, for the 10 minutes you get. (Give Praise)

Burn Halo

“Up From The Ashes” CD Fronted by former 18 Visions songwriter James Hart, Burn Halo’s second album is a radio-friendly, squeaky-clean rock/metal album, readymade for FM play. I’m neither surprised or impressed by the same old vocals (thanks, Layne Staley, for the template) and recycled pop-metal rhythm section. This will find plenty of fans, but if you’re looking for adventure in music, there’s nothing you haven’t already heard elsewhere, and better. (Rawkhead Records, aka Warner Brothers) – Todd Zachritz

Caring Community Christmas, Volume 2 will be on sale beginning September 17, 2011. This is the second year for this holiday music project, which is a fundraiser for United Caring Shelters. United Caring Shelters has provided assistance for the homeless and those in transition for over 20 years. This year’s sales of the holiday CD will begin at the 4th Annual Kenny Kent Lexus Jazz & Wine Festival, which will be held on the Downtown Walkway and will be sponsored by the Evansville Philharmonic Guild. The 2011 edition of this holiday project will feature 14 of the Tri-State’s finest musical groups. This year also marks a slight departure from the jazz format that was prevalent in 2010. Along with the jazz acts that our area has come to love and appreciate are several bands that represent other genres. Tommy Stillwell Talks About The Amazing Soul Crackers’ New CD/DVD

ommy Stillwell has been performing for more than three decades and is heralded as one of the best guitarists to come out of the Midwest. Currently fronting The Amazing Soul Crackers with Jon Rochner and Jimmy Cummings, Mr. Stillwell sat down with me recently to discuss what’s next for “the Crackers” and the band’s new CD/DVD set Live At The Deerhead. Johnny Full-Time: What can you tell folks about what they will find on this set? Tommy Stillwell: It’s a pretty good representation of what it would be like to sit in the audience at the Deerhead on a Sunday night. That’s basically what we meant it for. A lot of people work on Monday and can’t make it. A lot of people are like, “This is great! Do you have anything for us to take back home?” They might be in town visiting. This idea sprung from that. There’s not a lot of original stuff on it, mostly cover stuff. But, it’s our arrangement of other tunes. It’s a good representation of us live when we do cover material. JFT: What’s next for The Amazing Soul Crackers? TS: We have an original CD project that we’re writing on right now that we hope to get in the studio later this summer and be running full-tilt by fall, to get something out in the winter. I’m pretty excited about it. It’s going to be original material that I’ve been writing the last couple of years. Also, some collaborations – a couple things with Jonas Cowan and a song that was written by me and Tim Cornelius. He was the guy that co-wrote “Rainin’ the Blues” on one of my earlier projects. hat led to the murder of prominent Evansville citizen Ernest Tidrington, on a cold January day in 1930? It was the age of jazz, prohibition, and segregation. Mr. Tidrington was one of only two black attorneys in Evansville at the time. He was not allowed to sleep in a hotel or eat in a restaurant, but he was one of the most powerful men in the world of Evansville politics. rom 1924 until his murder on January 22, 1930, Mr. Tidrington was known as the Boss of Baptisttown, and ruled the area. A collector of graft and favors, he engineered the election of a Klan candidate for mayor in 1925. His murder was the only political assassination in Evansville’s history. The identity of his killer is known: a political enemy, Luther Bell. What remains a mystery to this day, however, is whether Luther Bell acted alone or whether there were forces at work to eliminate the powerful Tidrington for good. How often should a car be cleaned and detailed? If you really want to maintain your paint and upholstery, it’s good to do it once in the spring before you get into the summer heat, and once in the fall before you get into the harsh climate, the salt, and the cold. By doing this you can keep the car looking its best for 10 years – or longer.

When concerning ancillary vehicles (RVs, motorcycles, ATVs etc.) that may not get used as often, is there anything that owners should do each time before taking these vehicles out on the road? Two major things. I would put an additive called Lucas Fuel Stabilizer in the tank, so that when it sits, it helps keep the fuel free from moisture, and ensures that it will operate well at every start. The second thing is to check the coolant level and tires. One of the new trends in tires that we can carry out here is replacing the compressed air with nitrogen gas, because nitrogen will stay for longer periods of time and maintain pressure in the heat of the summer, or the cold in the winter. Are there any tips you can give our readers on how to keep a vehicle in good working order? Every time you stop and get gas, you should look at your tires to make sure they don’t bulge out below. If they do bulge out, you might wear the tire out, get a flat, and be stranded. Also, properly pressurized tires will give you better fuel mileage. Secondly, every other time you fill your tank, check your fuel level. If your oil level goes out of the safe zone, it can do some serious damage to your engine, which ends up being very costly. So, if you just take five minutes, it could save you thousands of dollars.

s the summer winds down, the Frog Follies rev up, bringing classic cars and family fun to the Tri-state area. Since 1975, the E’ville Iron Street Rods Club has put on a rod race for street rod owners—and games for everyone else. The Follies, named for a bullfrog race held during the first year of the event, attract thousands of people from all over the world: owners have come from as far as Alaska, Canada, and even Australia. “Considering we’ve been in the business of doing this for 37 years, we’ve got a sizable mailing list… we send around 6,000 invitations every year,” says marketing contact and club member Bob Bell. The Frog Follies are packed with activities. Not only are there races and swap meets for rod owners, there are kids’ games, car shows, concession stands, and even dances on Friday and Saturday nights for registered participants. There is also a church service on Sunday morning before the awards are given out. Bell says that although the Follies naturally attract car enthusiasts, that there is plenty to do and look at for people who are not necessarily hot rod fanatics. “We like to show people a good time for not a lot of money,” he says. Although some of the activities, like the dinners and dances, are only for registered participants, spectators can check out the Follies from 8-4 on Friday and Saturday and 8-2 on Sunday for only $5 a day. What’s the difference between being a participant and a spectator? For one, participants must have a hot rod that was manufactured before 1949— but buying a car isn’t enough. The participant must have also modified the car in some way. These cars are about more than just driving: they are well-loved reminders of a glamorous past. While the Frog Follies is a huge festival, its founding group is anything but: there are only 50 members in the E’ville Iron Street Rods Club. “Our club, our street rods consists of a membership of

He admits this makes the scale of the Follies somewhat daunting: “The day that the thing is over this year, we start for the next year. We do this because we have love for it.” In addition to providing a fun weekend that attracts many people to the Tri-state, the E’ville Iron Rods Street Club also donate much of the proceeds to charity. “What we’ve done over the years is try to donate to different charities. We have a rehab center through Easter Seals and it helps a lot of adults and children in our area. We give large contributions to that,” says Bell. “We’ve got 12 or 14 different organizations that we donate to. We try to keep enough money to keep it going for the next year, but donate to other organizations that need help around here.” The Frog Follies will take over the Vanderburgh County 4-H Fairgrounds from Friday, August 26th – Sunday, August 28th. Spectators can pay $5 a day; children under 12 get in free. The Art’s Council of Doom

n a rare treat, painters Gary Logan Hobdy, Steve Freeman, and graphic novelist, Melissa Erwin discuss their contribution in this culturally savvy, collaborative network of artists whose practices are linked through “a group of like-minded people who don’t necessarily agree with the way things in the current art scene in Evansville are going down...” The following interview explains the work of a collective group of artists whose reasoning behind their “back to roots” style of street art portrays the personal feelings and convictions that many share--that this area is “hemorrhaging for talent,” because the “overlooked talent relocates to bigger cities” for whatever reason. Creating an avenue for the expression of genuine talent is vital to periodically break down the conventional methods of getting artists’ work out there. N4U: What’s the name of your group? Steve: “The Arts Council of Doom (find us on Facebook). The name was inspired by the Legion of Doom, but the group was inspired by bile and dissatisfaction with the local scene.” Gary: “It started as sort of a joke almost, to defy our local arts council, like The Legion of Doom vs. The Super Friends.” N4U: Has Evansville been waiting for a group like yours to come along? Steve: “No, but Evansville has needed a group like this to help the scene catch up with the rest of the world. There are a lot of people working in pop surrealist, lowbrow, graffiti, tattooing, comic book and other outsider styles that don’t get the recognition they deserve in this town. I personally would like to change that. We lose a lot of people to big cities every year, because there is no outlet for what they do here, and that’s a damn shame.” Gary: “I think the disenfranchised artists, as well as those who feel rejected from Evansville’s current mainstream art scene due to generation or style clash, have been wanting a group like this [to] help represent them in a playful way and showcase their work.”

Melissa: “I also want to add that I don’t think it’s just artists who are disenfranchised but I think a large portion of the public as well. It’s not that they hate art or are even apathetic towards it, as is the normal excuse. They’re just not interested in the kind of art that’s being offered in the venues and events that have been relied upon so much. We’re here to take advantage of that vacuum.” Gary: “Recently, we had our first collaborative show ‘Mass Distraction,’ and it was a huge success in our eyes. Several peeps sold work (some sold all of their work), met with other artists in the area, [and] mingled with other people in the community who host charity events and music festivals where an artist could do well in terms of exposure and sales.” N4U: Do you have any upcoming shows? Melissa: “Some of us are participating in an upcoming show at Marina Pointe called ‘Colored Delusions’ with Renegade Productions. We’re also in talks with some charity organizations as well. For example, we’ll be running an art auction with the Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network for their Pin-Up Girl theme fundraiser party in September. Steve may have a line on a fundraiser for Riley’s Children’s Hospital around the same time.” The one cohesive element that unites all is the inspiration gained by artists who band together and form a movement, a “Council of Doom.” The projects that these artists are currently exploring allow fellow artisans and art enthusiasts to bridge the obstacles of those who are disillusioned in a rather provincial town. – Tamatha Lant Read this entire article online at News4UOnline.com

Koch Planetarium is Alive With Lights!

f laser light shows sound like a throwback, that’s because they are—after an almost 20-year absence, the shows are back at the Koch Planetarium. This summer, from August 6th through the 21st, five new laser shows will work their flashy magic at the Evansville Museum of Art, History, and Science. In 2010, over 800 people attended preliminary, onetime laser shows, proving that the interest was there; now, the Planetarium will be offering eleven different shows in ottal, including Perseus and Andromeda, a children’s show that tells a story in lights. The Evansville Museum has a storied history itself; in 2004, it celebrated the 100th anniversary of its collection, formed with a Ladies’ Literary Club in 1874. Originally held at the Willard Library, the collection always included art and sculpture, as well as religious, historic, and military relics. Though the museum and its collection have grown and changed throughout the years, the focus on providing a new lens through which to view history is one that is still a major focus today. The laser shows are Science Director Mitch Luman’s idea. “We did similar shows in the 80’s, but brought laser light shows back to town last year. It had been over 20 years since our light show,” Luman said. “The technology has changed since then, but the concept is the same. Bring 47 people into a dark planetarium full of stars and project multi-color laser lights and graphic animations on the dome.” As always, laser shows are tied to music—in fact, it’s hard to separate the idea of a laser show from Pink Floyd and The Wall. Luman acknowledges the power of music and lights together, saying, “The best part is the lasers are choreographed to music. Our shows are themed. Some shows are entire albums (Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd’s The Wall). Some shows are compilations of artists from different genre (Hypnotica, Laseropolis). Some shows are best hits of specific artists (Led Zeppelin, U2, The Beatles).” By covering such a wide range of genres and music, the show is sure to appeal to many different age groups. Though the show takes place in the planetarium, it’s much more of a concert experience than an astronomy lecture. Luman says, “It’s all music. We throw the stars on the sky because it makes the dome look 3-D. Because of the way the mind works when it sees stars, it convinces you that you’re somewhere you’re not. It makes the lasers more 3-D when you throw them on. It’s lasers among the fake stars.” In case you’re feeling like this might be a little too much fun, and not quite enough education, Luman was quick to remind readers that this year is the 50th anniversary of the laser itself, which is remarkable, if only because it is surprising that lasers are still a relatively new development. Tickets for the show can be purchased at etix.com and are $5 for matinee performances, $7 for evening performances (with discounts for museum members). eing a pet owner carries a high level of responsibility. Aside from finding the best veterinarian and keeping your pet’s health on track, there are numerous other questions that come up over your pet’s lifespan. To help answer some of these questions, we talked to Greg Ball at Pet Food Center to get his expert opinion on general pet care. N4U: How often should dogs be outside to play and run? What are the best activities that dogs and their owners can do together? Greg Ball: Most adult dogs require at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. The more time you can allow your dog to be active, the healthier they will be. Dogs will benefit even more from exercise or activities you can participate in together. Going for a walk or run, playing with a favorite toy, joining an obedience class, or getting involved in dog sports are all great ways to stimulate and bond with your pet. What are things pet owners can do for the well-being of their pet? Spending time with your pet is one of the most important things you can do for them. They need physical attention

as well as mental stimulation on a daily basis. Offering them good hygiene is also very important. Make sure they get enough exercise, feed them a well balanced, nutritional food that fits their needs, and offer them fresh, clean water. What type of litter and box combination do you find the most effective? This will vary from cat to cat. Most cats do perfectly fine with a traditional set up. Some are sensitive to perfumes or dyes and there are alternatives that can be used such as paper pellets or pine shavings. A high back or hooded litter box can solve mess issues. Evaluating your animal and your household will help you determine what combination will work best for your pet. Since pets shed, how often should owners brush/groom their pet? What tool do you recommend for the job? In shedding season, grooming should be practiced as often as possible. Most animals require at least a weekly grooming session, and that often becomes a daily session when they are shedding their winter coats. Your pet’s coat will determine what tool is going to work best. Long-haired dogs will do best with a wire pin brush or a slicker brush. Medium-haired dogs can use a variety, but the wire pin or bristled brushes usually work well. Short-haired dogs do best with a shedding blade or a rubber

curry brush. If your dog has a double coat, the undercoat rake or grooming tool, the Furminator, will work well to pull out the clumps of their undercoat. Cats can be more sensitive to grooming. A soft slicker or soft bristled brush may help ease them into the idea of daily grooming, and a grooming mitt may be easier than a normal brush. Persistence and patience will probably be your best tool when dealing with a not-socooperative cat. There are a lot of advertisements talking about the quality of food for your pet. What should pet owners look for when choosing pet food? The quality of the food is the most important thing to examine. It should have meat as the first ingredient.
