he Zac Brown Band has exploded on the country scene over the last several years. Indeed, they’ve played all sorts of shows and festivals, including Bonnaroo in 2009 and 2010, and they’ve collaborated with big names across many genres, including opening for the Dave Matthews Band and their recent collaborations with a living legend, Alan Jackson. With hits like “Chicken Fried,” “Free,” “Toes,” and “Highway 20 Ride,” the Zac Brown Band is known for writing songs that resonate with their listeners. Fiddle player and vocalist Jimmy De Martini shared his experience with the Zac Brown Band with News 4U in preparation for their December 28th show at the Ford Center. Although your band is largely considered a country band, you also play at rock shows, jam festivals, and some folk shows. Why do you think you can do all that? It’s just basically a group of musicians that come from a bunch of different genres. Each one of us grew up listening to different kinds of music… For example, our drummer is a jazz musician. One of our guitarists is a southern rock guy. Another guy went to school for jazz… . I grew up listening to a lot of rock, a lot of country, our bass player is a rock guy. We all came from different styles of music and we just put it together— we can pretty much handle anything. What made you interested in playing the fiddle? I was in my 6th grade orientation, like middle school, and they take you around to the different classes. The teacher

started playing violin to show the kids instruments, and I loved the way it sounded – instantly fell in love with it. I then started playing classical music throughout school. It wasn’t until I graduated high school and moved to a college town that I started playing out in bars and stuff like that. You’ve been working with some phenomenal writers and artists. Tell me about one of those collaborations and how things came together. We’ve done quite a few that have been amazing for us. Just recently at the CMA awards – a couple of days ago, we played with Greg Allman of the Allman Brothers. We were just talking with the producers of the show, telling them we wanted to do something special, and they were like, “What about Greg Allman?” And he’s a big influence on

us, the Allman Brothers, growing up. They’re from Macon, Georgia – right down the road from us. We thought that would be amazing to be able to collaborate with him. He’s a legend in our minds and in a lot of people’s [minds]. That was an amazing opportunity. Also, James Taylor, who is probably one of Zach’s two main influences – we got to play the ACM awards with him. That was amazing. He’s an inspiration to us all. Those are a few we’ve really been inspired by.

but our strongest point is playing the live shows. All of us made a living for years before we got together just playing live shows. I’m coming up on my seventh year of playing with Zac. The first four or five years were hard times. We traveled around in a little airport shuttle bus and paid our dues, but these last couple years have been quite amazing. In January, we’re going to go into the studio and start recording. It should be out by early summer [or] late spring.

What did you play when you worked with James Taylor? We did “Colder Weather” and then we went into “Sweet Baby James.” It was cool.

Some people may not know that the Zac Brown Band is involved in more than just music. Tell me about your children’s camp. We started a record label called Southern Ground Records, and we hand-picked artists that we grew up playing with in the Atlanta and Georgia area. We’ve been bringing them on the road with us. When we come to Indiana, we’re going to have two of the artists with us, Nic Cowan and Sonia Leigh, and they’re going to open for us. They’re on our label, and they’re friends with us, and we write songs with them, and … we play on their records. It’s kind of like a Motown kind of thing that we’re trying to set up – a community of artists coming together to make good albums and to help people. We never had a lot of help when we were trying to start our career, so we want to help other artists get to where we are. And Camp Southern Ground… Zac always wanted to give back to kids with developmental disorders. Because he worked at Camp Bliss, he’s had a lifelong ambition to start his own camp. He’s got the land purchased. Eventually, it’s going to be an amazing camp for kids with developmental disorders to help them and mentor them, and all the guys in the band are going to be a part of it. We’re going to come down and do music lessons, archery, exercise. There’s going to be a lake with canoeing – all sorts of stuff. A way for kids to get together and learn life skills. You play your songs night after night. Is there one that still moves you every time? Why? You know, the song “Free” is really powerful for me...We start the song – I have a little violin intro for it – and when you’re playing the song in front of thousands of people, and the only thing that I’m playing is violin – it’s the only thing going on – it’s really intense. You’re kind of on the spot, and it feels good. I’m just playing by myself, there’s no band. And that song—it’s just a great song. Zach wrote that song while he was by himself in Australia on a camping trip. I don’t know. That song always feels good, and the crowd really connects to it. You can tell when you look at the crowd. It’s kind of a slow song, [and] it’s kind of quiet at the beginning, but you never see anyone talking in the crowd. Every single person is listening. And then it gets to a big crescendo at the end. It’s just amazing. Is the band in the studio right now, or are you focused on touring right now? We’ve been doing a lot of touring. I feel like that’s what we do best – play music live. We make good albums because … a couple of the guys [in the band] are producers, and they own their own studios. So, we know the recording process really well,

onia Leigh, who hails from Carmel, IN, will be opening for the Zac Brown Band at the Ford Center on Wednesday, December 28th, says that the relationship between her band and the Zac Brown Band is special. That seems obvious on the outside: she is on the record label, Southern Sonia Leigh Ground, and she’s been playing with Zac for nearly seven years. But it’s more than that: “We all write together and we all play together, and it’s something special. We were just talking about this. I still have to stop and think about what’s really happening here… this isn’t something that anyone has forced any of us to do because we have to write a hit song together, you know? This is just people who really love and admire each other and love to be around and write together,” says Leigh. With her current record, 1978 December, Leigh explores country songwriting “with a little edge of rock ‘n roll and blues,” she says. “I’m inspired by everything I grew up on, Hank, George Strait, Alabama, and all that, and also I’m a huge Bruce Springsteen fan and Jackson Browne fan and Bob Dylan fan.” Leigh plays electric and acoustic guitar, and also some piano – something she hopes has been added to the stage show by the time her band hits Evansville. Her band also has other unique features, including an organ player.

ianist Jim Brickman is bringing his Christmas tour back to the Victory Theatre this year, with guests Anne Cochran, violinist Tracy Silverman, and former Super Bowl–winning Indiana Colts tight end-turned-singer Ben Utecht. Brickman says the show is “about the charm and the personality of a lot of the guests who join me. It’s oldfashioned in a manner of speaking—like a variety show. It’s very warm and emotional, but very light-hearted moments.” For that reason, he plays both traditional and current Christmas music. “You can see that at a lot of places at Christmastime, but if you’re coming to see me, I figure there’s a reason you’re there. I like to have that variety,” he says. The guests bring their different personalities to the songs—vocalist Anne Cochran has been with Brickman the last several times he’s been to the Tristate area, and Tracy Silverman plays the electric violin, which will bring a neat flavor to the music. The most surprising guest on the list, especially to Tristate area fans, will probably be Ben Utecht, but Brickman says he was an intuitive choice. “Ben is such an amazing guy, so talented in so many ways. It’s hard to believe anybody has that much talent in two different areas. When you hear him sing, he just commands the stage,” says Brickman. A Christmastime show can be especially taxing for performers on the road and away from their families, but Brickman says that in his case, it’s a labor of love. “The thing about Christmas is that the music is very nostalgic. It takes you on a journey. So the show, I want to—Christmas music is all about the emotional connections. If you can make that in a live show environment, then it really creates a joy and a spirit that’s infectious. That’s the reason people have come to expect that. . . . If it wasn’t really good, and it wasn’t connecting with people, we wouldn’t be able to keep

coming back all the time. It’s tradition for some, it’s new for others.” Brickman says that there’s a lot of variety in his Christmas show, but the common thread running through the music is joy. “Especially at Christmastime, there’s so much joy in what we do, and there’s a great variety. There are always the hits, because I feel like you’re lucky enough to have hits, you should play them—so it’s not exclusively ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’ from start to finish,” he says. Part of the uniqueness of the show stems from the intimate atmosphere fostered by everyone onstage. “You aren’t dealing with twelve tin soldiers and elves— it’s not a spectacle. It’s the anti-spectacle. It’s supposed to be the calm, charming, romantic environment,” says Brickman. “Everyone who is doing it really enjoys doing it and being there. I wouldn’t have anybody with me who was cashing a paycheck or checking off a list. There’s always a reason for being there.”

Brickman says he’s excited to be back in Evansville at the Victory, not just because of the beautiful theatre, but because of the vibe of the city. “It’s a community environment,” he says, “And with WIKY and my radio show playing there, I don’t feel as much of an outsider.” In fact, when we first started talking, Brickman immediately remembered Evansville and talked about a recent trip he’d taken to Vincennes. “I always know where I’m calling,” he said with a laugh. “If I didn’t do this — if I wasn’t a musician—I’d probably be a travel agent.” He was especially complimentary of the Victory, saying, “the theatre is just beautiful, I absolutely love playing there because it’s the perfect size for my show—there’s not really a bad seat in the house— and it feels intimate. n Evansville Christmas tradition continues as Amy Grant and Vince Gill bring The Twelve Days of Christmas Tour to The Centre’s Aiken Theatre on Friday, December 16th at 7:30 p.m. Although both Amy Grant and Vince Gill are respected and gifted musicians within their genres, the overwhelming success of their annual Christmas tours have become a staple for seasonal entertainment throughout the country. This year will mark their sixth Christmas tour. The Twelve Days of Christmas Tour is a concert that the whole family can enjoy. Fans are sure to enjoy the sounds of the season, featuring songs from the past to the present. The concert will feature well known classics such as “Jingle Bells,” “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” “Let It Snow,” “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “Silent Night,” along with several original hits. Amy Grant, born in Augusta, GA is the youngest of four sisters. She and her family settled in Nashville, TN in 1967. Early in her career, Grant performed as a backup singer for Bill Gaither. Grant is best known for her signature gospel recordings and subsequently dubbed the “Queen of Christian Pop.” For a brief time, Grant also found success as an Adult Contemporary artist with the hit songs “Saved by Love,” “Baby, Baby,” “That’s What Love Is For,” “Every Heartbeat” and “I Will Remember You.” However, she returned to her gospel music roots in 2002 with her Album release, Legacy…Hymns and Faith. She has received numerous awards. A few of her impressive accomplishments include 6 Grammy wins and 9 nominations, 22 GMA Dove Awards, a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame and an induction into the GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2003. Vince Gill, country singer, song writer and multiinstrumentalist, began his national recognition with the rock band Pure Prairie League in 1979. He has received the honor of receiving 18 CMA Awards, which include 2 Entertainer of the Year awards and 5 Male Vocalist awards, 20 Grammy Awards, induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007. Gill, born in Norman, OK in 1957, discovered his musical interest as a child while watching his father, a lawyer, who also played part-time in a country music band. Encouraged by his father, Gill learned to play a number of instruments, including banjo and guitar. To date, Gill has sold more than 22 million albums.

Grant and Gill look forward to their annual Christmas tours, not only because they love the season, the music and the crowds, but also because of sentiment. Amy Grant first met Vince Gill in 1993 while taping the television special, Christmas with Vince Gill. They celebrated their eleventh wedding anniversary in March of this year. i Want a Tablet… The buzz around the iPad 2 has made it a must-have on many Christmas lists this year. And, why not? A tablet provides the portability of a phone and the functionality of a computer – and usually costs less than both of those options, once you add in the monthly data plan of a phone. Starts at $499.99 The iPad 2 is lightweight and about the size of a magazine, but packed with hardware and apps. It features a dual-core A5 chip (which makes it run twice as fast as the previous model) and a 10-hour battery life; and if that’s not enough, it also has iOS 5, which connects all of your Apple products through iCloud. For the Luddites in your life, it also has two cameras – one in the front and one in the back – so that you can take amazing pictures, or use Facetime to connect with your friends and family face-to-face.

Acer Iconia Tab A500

Starts at $449.00 The Iconia has a 10.1-inch screen and uses Nvidia’s Tegra 2 processor. It also has two cameras: a 2-megapixel front facing camera and a 5-megapixel back camera. Though the organizational system mimics the iPad’s use of folders to an extent, it also features a desk at the bottom that gives it a different look and feel.

HTC Flyer

Starts at $299.99 Tablets that aren’t made by Apple run on Androidbased operating systems, and the HTC Flyer is no exception. It has a 7-inch screen so it fits better in purses and coat pockets, and it has a quick 1.5 GHz processor. Perhaps its most stunning feature, however, is the (expensive) add-on of the Magic Pen, which lets you mark up and take notes on websites. Your notes instantly sync with the cloud. It also has a 5-megapixel camera that also takes videos.

Kindle Fire

Starts at $199.99 This Android based tablet doesn’t look like other Android operating systems – mostly because Amazon replaced Google’s interface with their own. It’s got a 7-inch screen, and though it only has 8GB of flash storage, Amazon says that translates to 10 movies, 800 songs, or 6,000 books. The interface is modeled off of a bookshelf so you can flip through your media on “shelves,” making it fun to use and look at.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Starts at $529.99

Widely acknowledged as the closest an Android tablet can get to the iPad, this 10-inch pad connects to the 4G network (10 times the data speeds of the 3G only tablets): something that no Apple products do. Since the Samsung Galaxy is connected to Verizon Wireless, it also requires a 2-year contract and data fees. t would seem like beauty products would be a pretty safe gift for the women in your life; however, there is so much variation in the colors, smells, and substances of beauty products that what seemed like an easy answer can quickly become a nightmare once you reach the drugstore. The trick is finding products that are useful for everyone. Even people who don’t spend hours on their hair and makeup have some products that they like, and these gifts are a good compromise between useful and unique—and they’ll all fit in a stocking!

Top Coat Nail Polish

It’s hard to pick out a nail polish color for someone else, but those who paint their nails could use a top coat—especially one that helps speed up the drying time and prevents chipping. Even if your friends and family are stocked for makeup, a gift like eyelash curlers, tweezers, or brushes can be useful. Lotions

One good reason to give lotion, though, is that many people suffer from dry skin in the winter. nvesting in mutual funds seems like an almost impossible task to a beginner. Indeed, while the general idea of investing in funds and stocks makes sense, most people don’t know where to start. Rodney Baehl, a financial advisor from Edward Jones, says that the best way to get started is by learning more about mutual funds and how to invest in them. “Mutual funds, I think, should be the core of your investments. Some people like to do individual stocks but that’s what I would consider satellite investing outside … the core of the mutual funds. Getting started is pretty simple. Depending on your risk tolerance, pick a handful of mutual funds and start investing dollar cost averaging, which is a systematic way of investing the exact same amount into your account every month into those mutual funds, so you’re taking advantage of the market when the market’s down,” says Baehl. In fact, this is a good time to take advantage. “It’s a great market right now because it’s so volatile, so up and down on a day to day basis… when you actually do put the money into the account on a down day, you’re buying more shares than you would if it’s an up day. And, the nice thing is when the mutual funds do go up, you’ve got more shares working for you. The upside is much more beneficial because you bought on the downside, and you’ve got more shares building your wealth,” he says. At its most simple, dollar cost averaging just means putting the same amount of money into the mutual fund every month. “Say you’re putting in $200 every month. [For] some of those months, you might be buying on an up day, but [on] some you’ll be buying on a down day, so the average cost of the mutual fund is a lot lower than if you just said, ‘I’ve got $20,000, let’s put it all in right now’. You have a better average price,” says Baehl.

Of course, the scary part of investing is putting your money into a system that you can’t “see.” Although the investment strategy often makes sense in theory, letting go of anxiety about “spending” money without seeing much profit is difficult at first. However, before people invest at all, financial counselors, like Baehl at Edward Jones, can help you complete a “risk tolerance questionnaire,” which is a good way of measuring what kinds of risks you as an investor are willing to take. “We put them in hypothetical situations and explain the volatility in the market. We score those questions. It’ll tell us their balance towards growth and income and where they need to be percentage wise,” says Baehl. The Art of Home Brewing

Two popular holiday gift traditions are making homemade gifts and giving nice microbrew beers. This year, why not combine the two and learn how to home brew yourself? Jack Frey, the head brewer at Turoni’s, says, “If you can boil water, you can make beer—it’s really that simple.” In addition to brewing beer with Turoni’s, Frey has been brewing his own beer since 1996, and says that while some batches were better than others, he’s “never brewed a beer he couldn’t drink.” He has advice on how to get started and how to avoid pitfalls. “Beer is made from water, malted barley, hops, and yeast,” says Frey. Those are relatively easy ingredients to come by, but he says, “most beginning home brewers start with a beer kit.” A starter kit will come not only with all of the ingredients, but also with fermenting buckets and instructions. These are relatively inexpensive: “You can get into [brewing] for $100,” he says, “but you can also spend thousands.” The basic steps of brewing vary slightly depending on whether or not you’re going to use malt extract as a powder or liquid, or whether or not you’re going to extract sugars from actual grain (called “all grain brewing”); however, if you are just starting out, it is easier to use extract. Frey says that to begin brewing, you need to “mix malt extract in a powder or liquid form with hot water. (A lot of the beginning kits don’t even have you boil the water!) And then you put it in a container, a six or seven gallon plastic bucket and then put in your yeast.” Though brewing beer seems like it would be a difficult, expensive, lengthy process, it is surprisingly

Frey says, “You either prime each bottle with some extra sugar or you prime the whole batch with extra sugar so that what’s there in the bottle, the yeast that’s still in the beer and the new sugar will re-ferment and carbonate the beer because CO2 can’t escape at that point.” Putting sugar in each individual bottle is called bottle conditioning: it means that the beer continues to ferment in the bottle. The most important thing a new home brewer can do, though, is to remember to keep everything sanitary. Frey says, “It’s not hard—there are plenty of sanitizers out there.” Though you can use products like bleach, it’s easier to homebrew with sanitizers made explicitly for brewers, like the iodine-based Iodophor. Home brewing is a fun way to give your friends a personal, homemade gift this holiday season. Christmas wreath welcomes in the season easier than almost any other decoration. It’s like putting a beautiful bow on a package. However, fully decorated wreaths can be very expensive—and rarely reflect the exact tastes of the buyer. One easy way to counteract this problem is to purchase the materials and make the wreath yourself.

Even if you aren’t a crafty person, making a wreath is easy and fun. To start, you need a plain wreath (as little as $5 at most craft stores), ribbon, any decorations you want to add, a glue gun, and scissors. If you want to jazz the wreath up a little, stop by the floral section at any craft store and pick up a Christmas-themed floral spray or two—it adds a lot for very little effort. The most important thing to remember is to do the biggest things first—so it’s best to follow these directions:

1. Attach the ribbon (and/or bow).

Each wreath is different, but wrapping ribbon around the wreath itself is a good way to instantly make it look polished. A bow also helps to tie the wreath together, but it can be difficult to find materials in the same colors. One way to fix this problem is to tie some of your ribbon in with the bow. The bow can easily be twisted in, but it’s easiest to hot glue the ribbon to the underside of the wreath to secure it. (Helpful hint: buy wired ribbon—it is much easier to bend.)

2. Attach large pieces.

The floral spray is added during this step. It’s best to use a hot glue gun to make sure that pieces stay in place. A few smaller pieces can also be cut up and used in different ways— for example, what used to look like a small spray of ornaments begins to look like strings of silver balls.

3. Decorate!

In this step, you can attach all of the fun, personal things you’ve collected to your wreath. For my wreath, I decided to use miniature ornaments (often seen on tabletop Christmas trees). One inexpensive way to find decorations is to comb the dollar stores and dollar racks at grocery stores—there is almost always something that could be used to decorate a wreath. With the ornaments, you can use hot glue again— or you can use ornament hangers and treat the wreath like a Christmas tree.

• Oil Change and Filter

Using the correct oil for the temperatures can affect how well your engine runs. Depending upon the area you live in, if temperatures fall below freezing, you may want to consider using thinner oil. Check your owner’s manual, manufacturer or reputable dealer when in doubt. Example: If you normally run 10W-30, you may want to switch to 5W-30.

• Wiper Blades

Extended exposure to temperature extremes, ozone, road salt, oil and automatic car washes can impede the effectiveness and wear out wiper blades. A few signs of wear may include, streaking, worn rubber, smearing and squeaking. Most recommendations suggest changing blades at least once per year.

• Batteries

Inspect cables, terminals and fluid. It is a good idea to have a battery tested by a certified repair shop.

• Belts/Hoses

Inspect belts and hoses for tears and/or wear and replace when in doubt.

• Tires

It is essential to ensure that the right tires are mounted on your automobile. Snow tires may be a great investment depending on the area where you live, the average temperature and the amount of snow and ice that usually accumulates. Regardless of the type of tire, always check your tire pressure. Remember, tire pressure can change when a car sits idle for an extended period of time and with weather changes, particularly cold weather.

• Engine Anti-freeze (Coolant)

• Door Locks

Door locks can freeze in the winter, and warm water is not the best treatment. Keep a tube or can of deicer in your garage and at your work. (If kept in the car, you will not be able to get it since your door locks are frozen.)

• Gas Tank

Resolve to be Healthier in 2012

n obvious reason it is harder to stay fit during the holidays is the temptation that most people are surrounded with: parties, food, and drinks seem to be constant in December. But Tammy Vaughn of Fitness 19 gym, a certified personal trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine, says that those are not the only reasons it is complicated: “I think for most people it is harder to stay fit during the holidays. There are so many things that can easily tempt you or pull you off track if you let them. Like all the wonderful, yummy food, travel, family stress, holiday parties, [and] office goodies that keep coming in day after day.” Everyone knows that to maintain a healthy lifestyle you have to incorporate a good diet and exercise, but that is not always easy to do. One of the most important things you can do, according to Vaughn, is to have a game plan. “Try to stay on track with your program,” she says. Of course, that does not mean you have to be perfect— “having 2 or 3 days off in a row won’t kill you, but it would sure help to burn a few extra calories off at the gym when you know your diet will be revved up a bit with extra calories from all of your holiday favorites.” Though each person has their own diet and exercise plan, there are some consistent tips that can help anyone trying to eat healthy: “Try to stay hydrated and keep the alcoholic drinks to a minimum,” says Vaughn. It is also helpful to “try to fill your plate with plenty of veggies and fruits so you’re not tempted by other higher fat choices… moderation is the magic word! You can still enjoy the holiday food and fun and make sure you’re getting a balance between healthier foods.” Vaughn is quick to point out that during the holidays there is a lot of temptation, but when it comes down to it, there are always healthy choices mixed in. As well as balancing healthier foods and drinks, she says that there are easy ways

to exercise during the holidays without ignoring your guests—you can go out for a family walk for 2030 minutes each day. The Smiling Moose

he Smiling Moose Deli located on Burkhardt Road is one of Evansville’s newest franchises. In fact, it has only been open for business since late August. The chain opened its first restaurant in Vail, Colorado, in 2003. Since then, they have opened up stores throughout the Rocky Mountain area and Texas. The Evansville store is the first in the Midwest.

The Smiling Moose offers a few special features that make it stand out from the rest of the sandwich-chain crowd. First, it offers an exciting breakfast menu with all day availability. This sumptuous breakfast fare includes muffins and pastries, breakfast burritos, house-baked bagels with your choice of spread and toppings, and interesting breakfast sandwiches with such toppings as salsa and avocado. Second, the lunch and dinner menu includes a make-yourown sandwich or salad option. Finally, it is one of the few restaurants in Evansville that offers gluten-free (GF) bread. In fact, they offer good GF bread. The first time I ate at the Smiling Moose, I carried my GF sandwich back-up to the counter because I didn’t think it was GF since the bread was so soft. The increased price of an extra $1.50 for this product is very worthwhile. I know that I look forward to ordering a big old sandwich again. During a recent lunch visit to the Smiling Moose with a friend, I ordered the signature sandwich – the Mighty Mo Grinder ($5.99, $8.79) on GF bread. It was huge. The soft, elastic bun (a quality that becomes important after eating rice bread for a few months) enclosed a half pound mound of crumbled ground beef mixed with melted cheese, topped with shredded lettuce, diced tomato, diced red onion, banana pepper rings, vinegar and oil, and mayonnaise. Somehow I

managed to finish the whole thing. Although it didn’t exactly taste like a cheeseburger, it was very good. My friend tried the El Rancho breakfast burrito in a spinach tortilla ($4.99). Other wrap choices include plain, whole wheat, and red chili. The filling of chicken, scrambled eggs, potatoes, jalapenos, and red onions was quite spicy and tasty. “Fresh” cilantro was listed as an ingredient on the menu; however, the cilantro on the prepared wrap was dried, which gave the sandwich a bit of an odd, grassy flavor brought on by too much dried parsley. I have tried many other Smiling Moose sandwiches, including the Parisian – with grilled chicken, avocado, sundried tomatoes, pesto mayo, and brie cheese ($6.99, $8.79) – and my favorite so far, the Green Thumb ($6.99, $8.79) – a vegetarian concoction of artichokes, spinach, roasted red peppers, olives, tomatoes, and sunflower seeds with melted Swiss cheese and pesto mayo. The icon displayed beside this sandwich claims that it is low-cal, but because it is so gooey from the cheese and mayo, I can hardly believe that this claim is true. Other sandwich offerings include a variety of wraps, including a Thai style with spicy peanut ginger sauce; a hot Italian grinder; and numerous vegetarian options. Salads on the Smiling Moose menu include their own versions of a Caesar, Cobb, Italian, Greek, and harvest (with chicken, nuts and cranberries). localchefspotlight Chef Tim Mills has devoted 31 years of his life to the culinary arts, and from his experience she is a demanding, unforgiving mistress. Stick with her through thick and thin and she will take you to new places and show you veneration worthy of an old world monarch. Tim’s culinary life began at a restaurant in Jackson, TN. Later, he was offered an ACF (American Culinary Federation) apprenticeship under acclaimed Chef Frans Hedriks of Brennan’s in New Orleans. Chef Hendricks provided much inspiration to Chef Mills, who then further honed his talents at culinary school in New York. Mills then traveled to our nation’s capital where he became the Executive Banquet Chef for the Washington D.C. Sheraton at the age of 21. “We did dinners seating up to 7,000 people. I [also] did Jacques Cousteau’s 75th birthday,” says Chef Mills, recounting his D.C. experience. During his time there he cooked for the third president of Egypt, Anwar Sadat, as well as for former presidents George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan. After 13 years in Washington D.C. he was recruited by Casino Aztar to be Executive Chef. “I stayed with them for two years and then I left. Soon after my wife and I got into historical restoration in Evansville and purchased the building that Madeleine’s is in now [and] then started the restaurant which is named after our daughter,” says Mills. Chef Mills is head chef and owner of Madeleine’s, a fusion restaurant downtown that offers an extensive menu of

ornate international dishes. It also boasts one of the most extensive premium liquor bars in the state. When asked what his favorite cuisine to prepare is Mills said, “I feel pretty comfortable with all cuisines, which enables Madeleine’s to do what it does being a multicultural restaurant; but if I had to choose one I would say my expertise would be wild game.” Chef Mills Tim Mills has been hardened by the of Madeleine’s food industry, personally comparing his experience to Hell’s Kitchen, but he remains a true culinary philanthropist, making it clear that all that matters is making the diner happy. To those who dream of becoming a seasoned chef Mills says, “You’ve got to be dedicated to it, you’ve got to live it, and you have to breathe it. From the day you start to the day you stop it’s not about you – it is about the customer. Also, be expected to work long days for many years and get paid very little for it.” Chef Mills also makes it very clear that being respected in the culinary community does not usually come with the velvet sheen of cooks and chefs on television but rather with real passion and rolling with the punches. “You are your destiny in this business,” says Mills. A self-professed member of the “old school” of cooking Chef Mills says, “I believe in simplicity in cooking. Indeed, a 4-show classic series ticket package and a 5-show premiere series ticket package are available. The 4 show series will feature Pop Goes the Rock by Cirque Dreams on Tuesday, February 28th, at 7:30 p.m.; Damn Yankees on Wednesday, March 21st, at 7:30 p.m.; the Mel Brooks movie Young Frankenstein on Sunday, April 29th, at 7 p.m.; and The Blue Man Group on Tuesday, June 5th, at 7:30 p.m. The 5-show package also includes Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific on Wednesday, December 14th, at 7:30 p.m.; additionally, you can add the December 1st show by Straight No Chaser to either package with a the special add-on cost. The Broadway at the Centre series sponsored by D-Patrick will kick off with a fun-filled, awe inspiring Christmas program by the a cappella singing group Straight No Chaser on Thursday, December 1st, at 7:30 p.m. Straight No Chaser is a group comprised of former members of the Indiana University a cappella group of the same name. However, don’t be fooled – Straight No Chaser is not a traditional a cappella group with only straight-laced clothing and performances. Known for their electrifying live performances, this is sure to be an exciting Christmas show that defies most expectations of an all-male a cappella group. The other show that will be taking place in 2011 is South Pacific, a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that tells the story of an American WWII nurse navigating not just the war but the perils of falling in love with an expatriate French plantation owner. This show will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14th. The play features classic Broadway show tunes like “Some Enchanted Evening,” “There is Nothin’ like a Dame,” and “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta my Hair.” — Katie Darby-Mullins

anhuck’s is the place to be if you want to play in a pool league. On Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesday nights they have 8-ball pool, and on Wednesday and Thursday nights, they have 9-ball. There are currently four teams on Sunday and Wednesday, two teams on Monday and Thursday, and three teams on Tuesday. On weekdays, they play by APA rules, which stands for American Poolplayers Association, and on Sundays they play by both APA and TAP rules, which are the Pool Amateur Tour rules. On Saturdays, they feature open pool tournaments that start at 4 p.m. The entry fees are $5.00 and is also played by APA rules. Lanhuck’s is located at 321 Columbia Street. vansville’s River Basin Blues Society will host an all-day concert on December 3 at the Deerhead which is located at 222 Columbia Street. The event will serve as a membership drive for the blues society and fundraiser for WUEV, the University of Evansville radio station. Local blues bands will begin playing at noon and will perform late into the night. A portion of all food and drink sales will be donated to WUEV. Get to Know Your Evansville Icemen! Brian Bicek Forward

Brian Bicek is a forward who is in his second season with the Evansville IceMen. Last year he had a phenomenal season—he was the second leading pointscorer with 61 points, and was even invited to play in the annual CHL All-Star Game last January. He’s known for his speed on the ice and was named the second fastest skater in the CHL “Best of the Best” poll last year. What is your favorite part of living in Evansville? Honestly, the people. They’re all real friendly and willing to lend a hand and help out. I’m from Chicago, so it’s the southern hospitality. What was the last great movie you saw? Moneyball. I saw it a couple of weeks ago with my fiancé and we both really enjoyed it. What is your favorite restaurant? Wildfire—it’s a steakhouse chain in Chicago. Are you doing anything special for the holidays? Hopefully, weather permitting, we’ve got 2 ½ days off, and as long as there are no snow storms, we’re trying to get back to Chicago to spend time with my family. If you weren’t a hockey player, what would you be? I have my degree in finance, but to tell you the truth, I haven’t done anything with that. I’d probably want to be a professional golfer.

t’s the most wonderful time of the year. And this is not quoting Christmas music. There is plenty of time for that coming up. No, it’s time for playoffs. You drafted well, traded well and cured the bye-week blues by fervently monitoring the waiver wire. Now, it’s time for the payoff with you clutching the gleaming, shiny, duct-tape modified bowling trophy and, most important of all, the envy of your fellow fantasy owners for the next 8 months. Now, you might be thinking: “Playoffs? Don’t talk to me about playoffs. Playoffs?” (in the voice of former head coach Jim Mora). Most leagues are set up to allow for the playoffs to last three weeks or so. Additionally, most commissioners (if they have the slightest semblance of a heart) will end your league’s season during the NFL’s weeks 14, 15 or 16 as most of the NFL’s playoff teams will start resting starters. Remember, though “You play to win the game” (in the voice of former coach Herman Edwards). It’s not panic time as you need to focus on maximizing the fantasy points from your regular studs. The top fantasy point-getters are still going to pack on the points facing more and more non-playoff teams. During the first couple of rounds of your playoffs, you will need to focus and analyze the match ups your players have from week to week. And don’t forget, “They are who we (you) thought they were” (in the voice of former head coach Dennis Green). The sleepers you

A center who is originally from Stockholm, Sweden, Nicklas Lindberg is in his ninth pro season and his second season with the Evansville Icemen. The top scorer on the team last year, Lindberg was responsible for 69 points and 54 assists. As well as being heralded as an incredible technical player, he was voted #3 in the league under the category of “Most Gentlemanly Player,” as well. After a game, what is your favorite way to unwind? Road: “We just hang out on the bus or watch a movie before we get some sleep.” Home: “Get a bite to eat with your teammates and get ready for the next day.” Do you have any hobbies outside of hockey? I like to play a little poker on the sides. What was the last trip you took (without the team)? I went to a couple of weddings this summer that were a lot of fun. [I was] all over the place for weddings. What sports teams do you cheer for? I live in Detroit in the off season…I was cheering for the Tigers in the playoffs and then the Lions are doing good this season, so I’m cheering for them. Also Swedish teams when it comes to hockey or soccer. If you weren’t a hockey player, what would you be? Maybe I’d be a poker player. (laughs)

ABOUT YOU: Deviator is a band that has existed in its current form for 6 years and pleases and confuses those who dare to listen, seeming to provoke thought above all else. After trying other drummers, Dereck Dew came on board in 2005 and has kept the pulse in that time. In addition to his angular approach, the bass and vocals of Travis Kirschner are distinct (for better or worse) and the guitar work of Troy Coots seems to hold the chaos together. Through the approach of Progressive Rock, the Omaha/Kansas City trio seem to strike a balance between beauty and uncertainty, providing a great reward for those who join us for the performance. n the past five years, some major spirit manufacturers have moved to create special “luxury” versions of their products and tossing them into the market. Liquor companies feel forced to create super-expensive additions to their collections because marketing departments are weary of falling behind the competition. Regardless of the quality of these products, they are often attached to some back story which attempts to legitimize their existence or significance. This can be an effective technique for roping hardcore spirit lovers but rarely permeates the public. When a backstory from one of the world’s most talked about whiskies surfaces, Bourbonblog.com pays attention. So much attention, in fact, we make a trip to New York to bring you a video segment of this historic unveiling. It began with a grueling British Antarctic Expedition of 1907-1909 which brought Ernest Shackleton and his team to the edge of starvation before they eventually fell short of their ultimate goal by less than 100 miles. They left behind several crates of Mackinlay’s Rare Old Highland Malt, buried in the icy darkness beneath the hut at Cape Royds. In February 2007, after a century entombed in thick ice, three crates of Shackleton’s whisky were uncovered. After spending more than 100 years untouched by human hand and encased in Antarctic ice, three of the bottles are sent to the original brand owner Whyte & Mackay of Scotland and their master blender Richard Paterson. Alongside his expert team, Richard embarked on a new adventure in the Shackleton story – and faithfully re-created famous whisky which has just been launched. This could be one of the grandest, most real back stories of any spirit in the world.It sounds like a fairy tale, but as we tasted this whisky re-created at the unveiling in New York, we knew it was fantastic. Richard Paterson and his team spent weeks painstakingly testing, sampling and profiling the original 1907 whisky for the sake of accuracy. Their recreation is a true joy: a blend of up to 30 year old whiskies, light in color, with a fruitful nose and intense flavor. This spirit, its creators, and its back story are all the real deal. If there has ever been a viable reason to spend extra on a bottle of whisky, that reason is Shackleton’s. We recommend you buy a bottle soon as 50,000 bottles have been released for the festive season. BattleFielD 3: warFare realiZeD

or just over a decade the Battlefield franchise has been instrumental in the portrayal of the open world first person shooter. The newest recruit to the squad formed by EA Games/DICE is Battlefield 3. It commands a voluminous combat gaming experience.

On the surface the game features unique, realistic lighting in the form of glares from light sources that can be both annoying and spectacular. It boasts a brand new co-op option in which two individuals can play six intense missions together over the Internet. There is also a myriad of new weapons and vehicles each with a varied number of attachments and perks. The multiplayer features gorgeous, immense maps that make the gamer feel like a small piece in a large, chaotic puzzle. This game requires patience, but it pays off in moments of tactical ecstasy. There are four classes in this game: assault, support, engineer, and recon. Each class has a specific niche on the battlefield. For example, the engineer carries an antitank mine and rockets to disable ground and air vehicles, but they can also repair vehicles using a blowtorch. Alternatively, each weapon has attachments to give the player an edge such as infrared sights for dark maps and a flashlight to blind enemies. There is simply not a more robust multiplayer experience in the genre. The single player campaign centers around a U.S. Marine Staff Sergeant named Henry Blackburn. His orders are in opposition to a militant, extremist organization called the P.L.R. with a fictional basis in Iran. The main altercation is volatile and exciting, but the concept that stands out the most is the attention paid to the inner conflict within a few of the characters. The human element is preserved while giving the player fun and fantastical game play. Despite a few cosmetic details and connectivity issues, this game is a blast with high replay value. a slightly bitter finish. Boulevard has captured some appropriate flavors for the holidays, and this ale is solid, if unremarkable.

The respected Bell’s presents their venerable winter seasonal beer, a Belgianstyle wit. This one pours a hazy yellow-orange with plenty of fine, white carbonation and a little retention. The aroma is definitely of spices (a little clove) and citrus (namely orange). Overall, it is pleasant.

Amanda Smith: 2.5

Bell’s rarely disappoints me, but I’m afraid they’ve let me down this month. The body of the beer is smooth and easy drinking, but the clove taste is so overpowering, I simply can’t enjoy the beer. Unless you really enjoy a good spice, pass on this one.

Jabez Martinez: 5.0

This is my favorite beer, and I can only get it this time of year. I will be stocking up. This beer pours a cloudy yellow color with a bunch of carbonation. It has a fruity aroma with hints of spice. It has a light orange flavor and is a very smooth beer. It is a wit beer, but it is on the lighter side. I can’t get enough of it.

Boulevard Nut Cracker Ale (Kansas City, MO)

Todd Zachritz: 3.5

This hazy amber ale pours with medium carbonation and only a halffinger of lace on the glass. There is nothing spectacular in the presentation. The nose is spiced, malty, and rich— not bad. Upon tasting, I get more spice, and some tones of fruit and nuts, with

Yummy. This is a wonderfully spicy and rich bitter brew. Perfect for holiday parties, the flavors just lend themselves to that sort of occasion. The downside? Because it’s unfiltered, it’s a bit heavy on the wheat, which in turn makes it a bit heavy on the heartburn.

Jabez Martinez: 4.0

This is another dark amber-colored beer with a citrus hop aroma. As in the aroma, it has a heavy hop flavor. I could taste a little sweetness (grapefruit and orange flavors), but I also detected some grassy notes. A somewhat complex beer and very enjoyable.

Goose Island – Pere Jacques 2010 (Chicago, IL)

Jabez Martinez: 4.0

This is a dark amber beer with light hops aroma. I could taste the caramel malt with a little fruit flavor. I enjoyed the light nut flavors, but this beer was my last to review and sort of tasted like the Widmer Brothers Brrr Seasonal Ale.

Ah, Widmer rarely disappoints my taste buds, and this clean red/ amber ale pours with an impressive head and a luxuriously thick lace on the glass. The nose is caramel malty with some definitely hoppy flair tucked in there. Impressive. The flavor seems malty at first but with a clean hops finish, which places this more in line with a pale ale. Delicious and worthy!

like most is that you can taste the hops, but they are subtle to the sweetness of the beer . . . almost in disguise. The finish is clean and pleasing. This one will be on my Christmas list.

This bottle-aged, living beer is a Belgian-style ale, and it pours a rusty amber (with visible sediment) and a minimal head. I get virtually no lace, either. It’s not really impressive. It’s pleasant but heavy on the palate, and with a strong alcohol kick (8%), this one’s a sipper. I wonder what it would taste like with a few years of aging.

What a bizarre beer! It’s exceptionally yeasty to the nose and has a fruitdrenched-in-alcohol taste on the palate. I don’t dislike this, I don’t think, but I don’t think I’m real partial to it either.

Jabez Martinez: 4.0

This is a cloudy, dark-colored amber tinted beer with decent carbonation. I could smell the Belgian yeast and some fruitiness. This was a very sweet beer, and I wasn’t too sure about it at first, but it grew on me. I really enjoyed it, like most Goose Island offerings. I liked the Belgian yeast flavor also.

f you haven’t heard of the Henderson Area Arts Alliance yet, you’re in for a treat. Kyle Arnett, the executive director, says, “[We are] the presenting organization for the Henderson Fine Arts Center, which is an approximately 1000 seat venue on the campus of the Henderson Community College. We present an ‘original series’ of 6 shows, which vary from season to season. All the shows are touring, world-class productions.” “Broadway to bluegrass,” HAAA features a threeshow family series of matinees including area favorites like Tales and Scales. The family series is only three seasons old, but includes not only family-friendly shows, says Arnett, but also things like science projects through cMoe, and featuring a bookmobile. hen beginning this, I had the preconceived notion that asking people about Christmas traditions would reveal things like going to the movies or taking trips or attending concerts. It could not be farther from the truth. Melissa McGuire, Newburgh, told me she and her late mother always baked strawberry bread together and gave as gifts to family and friends which dates to her mother’s days in Topeka Kansas. Today, the family Christmas meal in Melissa’s home, includes her mother’s cornbread dressing and the strawberry bread. Scott Lauderdale, Evansville, related he grew up with their family putting up a family farm cedar tree each year. His grandmother always saved the cedar tree shavings and burned them throughout the season filling the air with the special fragrance. Kelly McKittrick, Evansville, looks forward to picking out gifts every year with her seven-yearold son Garrett and giving them to a needy family. For their own special Christmas day, they spend the time with her family. After the big meal, they all play games including lots of giggling. Cindy Steele, Evansville, celebrates Christmas Eve in her own home but always goes to her mother’s in the afternoon. On Christmas Day she heads off to have Christmas breakfast with her kids and grandbabies. Once the big meal is over, they open presents and watch the grandchildren play with their new toys. Bill and Wanda Kavanaugh, Newburgh, say they have Christmas Day at their house with everyone’s presents under their tree. Since Wanda sings ‘O Holy Night’ every year at their church on Christmas Eve, many of the family gather there. So you see, in this area, our Christmas traditions are all about family. Within my own family we have included annual visits to Bethel Temple’s ‘Living Christmas Tree’ and Garvin Park’s light displays, but it was still all family. ultimedia Artist, Christopher W. Wilke’s work draws inspiration from and examines the potent imagery of our mythic, religious and metaphysical realms, asking the viewer to reconsider deeply held preconceptions and to draw new connections between the diverse ideas with which they identify, be they cultural, religious, political or personal. Whether it is in the detailed planning of an architectural reliquary for a ruined building or the alchemical etching of copper intaglio plates, the process of creating becomes a vital part of the content. The resulting work relies on the successful dialogue between artisan and material to achieve its authenticity. Wilke is an avid creator with a love for woodworking, printmaking and painting. He once said, “I build wood objects and mixed media sculpture. I paint. I draw. I make prints. One of the most important features of my work is the honesty each medium provides. It is vital that the material from which this piece comes has a voice in the final work.”

What tools do you use in your work usually?

The tools vary with the medium. Woodworking and sculpture often call for many of the same tools: saws, files, drills, and grinders. Painting and drawing, of course, utilize pencils, charcoals, pens, and brushes. Printmaking calls for some of both, besides having its own slew of specialized tools. Relief cutting calls for woodcut gouges, while intaglio etching on copper is even more elaborate; you have to file the edges of the copper plate, paint on an highly toxic (carcinogenic) acid-resistant mordent called asphaltum with a brush then scratch lines through it with a sharp metal stylus. When the plate is exposed to the etching compound (ferric chloride), the lines one scratches etch into the plate and serve to hold ink for printing. The Japanese pull-cut saw is the single greatest saw ever developed. Traditional Western saws are all push-cut, that is to say the cutting action occurs when you push the saw; given the flexible, pliant blade of most of these saws, this can make getting a straight cut challenging. Japanese saws, which evolved independently, instead cut on the pulling action, which necessitates a straighter cut because you’re pulling the blade straight. I use mine on nearly every project I do, even if only to cut the masonite panel for a painting. Do you have a professional portfolio? Has it led you to jobs and potential contacts? I have a website through Tumblr (drxwilke.tumblr.com), which I desperately need to find the time to update, and I maintain a Facebook page (http://www.facebook. com/DrxWilke23), which is a little more up-to-date. So far we’re approaching a hundred fans and the

exposure it provides for upcoming events is invaluable. When I had a solo show in Belleville, IL earlier this year, the Facebook page enabled me to keep fans updated about the venue’s decision to hold over the show for another month, and I’m sure that helped with sales. — Tamatha Lant

as One started rapping when he was just 12 years old. “I wanted to impress people,” he said, “And the group I hung around listened to hip hop.” Though he acknowledges his start may have been less than artistic, now his love for the music is evident in his tracks. Since he started, he’s been playing at local clubs, like Boney June’s and The Jungle, as well as touring cross-country and playing shows in almost every state. His last record, Liberation, met with open ears, and now he’s working on a follow-up. How is the new album, The Monster in the Wishing Well, coming?

I’m very excited about it. I recently acquired the means to start recording myself for scratch and reference tracks, and that has really expedited the process. I am working on it with Eric Hunter. I have a few features on it rapper-wise: Kristoff Krane, Sadistik, and Bodi. I have a few production guests on it also: Figure, Emancipator, and BIG CATS! all show up on there. It will release sometime next year, hopefully winter.

Who are your influences?

Andre 3000 is a big influence to me. I pull from everywhere though, not just musicians. I recently read a book about Andy Kaufman that changed my ideas on performance. I love how he approached it. If you follow me on Facebook (Facebook.com/jacobsnider1) or twitter (@casone1) you will see that I post a lot of status updates just to read how people react—human reaction is one of the most interesting things to me. That is a big influence. Eyedea was a big influence on this record. He reignited my love for music when we toured together last summer.

What would surprise people about the hip-hop scene in Evansville?

I think Evansville is becoming more hip to independent music. I have been really fortunate and more or less lucky to have the following that I do here. I appreciate every person that has come out even if it was just to talk trash about me on the side-line.

Do you record with live instruments or tracks?

We use a lot of live instruments. The album I am working on now is predominantly live instruments. I work mainly with one producer named Eric Hunter. He plays everything, and I mean that—from banjos to triangles. I did a little bit of production work but he handled the bulk of it. I pick music based on its mood.

What is the most exciting thing about being a musician for you? What drives you to continue creating? Honestly, I love getting paid to travel, and that is a huge benefit to it. I’m very lucky in that regard, but I think the best

feeling is knowing that I changed something for someone. I’m not egotistical enough to think I have changed people’s lives, but I received an email telling me I helped someone quit heroin after hearing a song I made. That’s one of the biggest things that ever happened to me musically...or period. Starring Hollywood heavyweights like Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, and John Hurt, as well as featuring newer actors like Tom Hardy, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is based on John LeCarre’s classic 1974 novel of the same name. An international thriller, the movie focuses on the Cold War Years by following George Smiley (Oldman), a disgraced British spy, who is fired and secretly rehired by the British government, who are afraid that the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI-6) has a double agent who is working for the Soviets.

The Sitter 20th Century Fox In The Sitter, there are no good guys. Jonah Hill plays the world’s most irresponsible babysitter, and he has come up against the three worst children in all of New York City. Instead of having a boring, TV-filled night at home, the four of them go on an unforgettable overnight adventure through New York—and it’s anyone’s guess if they’ll make it home alive. The Sitter is being hailed as “a new level of twisted and debauched hilarity from the director of Pineapple Express,” which should be a pretty good clue that this isn’t a sitter you want to bring your children to.

Young Adult Paramount Studios Written by Juno’s Diablo Cody and directed by Jason Reitman, Young Adult stars Charlize Theron as Mavis Gary, a writer who specializes in teen and young adult literature who returns to her small hometown. A misguided attempt to relive her glory days and reconnect with her now happily married high school sweetheart (played by Patrick Wilson), the move proves to be more difficult than she initially plans on, and she winds up forming an unusual friendship with a different former classmate, played by Patton Oswalt, who also seems to be stuck in his high school life.

The story is based on a series of comic books created by Belgian artist Herge—specifically the three stories The Crab with the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn, and Red Rackham’s Treasure. The movie focuses on Salander, who has a troubled past due to a crime she committed in her youth and a horrific sexual assault she suffers not long thereafter. Because of her harrowing past, she’s the perfect crimefighting machine—throughout the rest of the movie, she’s seeking her own brand of justice.

Walt Disney Pictures Set in rural England and Europe during WWI, War Horse begins by showing the incredible relationship between a horse named Joey and a young man named Albert, who trains him. However, they are forcefully separated, and the film follows Joey through the war and watches as he changes all of the people that he comes into contact with— including British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter—before Joey ends up in No Man’s Land. War Horse examines WWI through the eyes of a horse and shows the many emotions he experiences: joy and sorrow, friendship and adventure. Captain America: The First Avenger Paramount

Set during World War II, Captain America is the story of Steve Rogers (as portrayed by Chris Evans), a brave but scrawny soldier who volunteers for an army experiment to give him super human strength and agility in an effort to transform him into a super soldier. However, the army soon realizes that their new weapon is too valuable to risk losing in battle; therefore, instead of heading into battle, Steve performs in USO shows while dressed in the familiar red-white-and-blue costume. Nevertheless, once a dire Nazi plot is revealed, Captain America rises to the challenge by defeating The Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) and protecting the Allies from an impending missile launch.

His bravery knows no bounds; his — Richard Knight, Knight at the Movies selflessness is infinite. So my question is, where’s the fun in that? Spidey suffers from more neuroses than a Woody Allen character, and heaven knows that Batman is overdue for some intensive therapy, maybe even electric-shock treatment. Yet, good ol’ Cap has no dead uncles or daddies in his past and thus no internal conflict, meaning no chance for growth. He is wholly good at the beginning and wholly good at the end. Only the very final scene gives us some hint of intrigue, and by then, it’s too late for even Captain America to save the day.

Horrible Bosses

Warner Brothers Pictures Directed by Seth Gordon, Horrible Bosses centers on the miserable work-lives of Nick, Kurt, and Dale (Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis) and their unbearable bosses (played by Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell, and Jennifer Aniston). One night, the three underlings are fed-up, and while under the influence of some liquid courage, they decide to solve their work problems for good with a plan to murder one another’s respective bosses. With the help of an ex-con (Jamie Foxx), they devise a foolhardy plan, and the fun begins. What could possibly go wrong?

The Review: Horrible Bosses is an unapologetically over-the-top, gross-out comedy, and for what it is, it works well, that is, most of the time. Although — Sam Adams, Los Angeles TImes the premise of three friends conspiring to murder each others’ respective bosses in order to avoid suspicion makes for a fairly one-note story, Bateman, Sudeikis, and Day provide anything but one-note characters. The film places the three in a series of preposterous situations, and watching them fumble their way out of each sticky predicament is quite entertaining. Of course, this movie is no masterpiece. It’s formulaic, unbelievable, and silly, but these guys do silly very well.

Bad Teacher

Columbia Pictures Junior high teacher Elizabeth Halsey (Cameron Diaz) has lost her sugar daddy and needs to find a new one quickly. She wants to quit this lame teaching gig and live the good life, which by her definition involves drinking, getting high, and generally being herself. That is probably a good idea since she stinks at her job anyway. Her plan? Seduce the wealthy new substitute, Scott Delacorte (Justin Timberlake), and marry him. The only problem is that she must compete with Amy Squirrel (Lucy Punch), her squeaky-clean colleague, who wants Scott for herself.

“This is too easy, but I’m going to do it anyway: Bad Teacher? Bad movie.”

The Review: This film might have worked if — Matt Neal, The Standard it focused on a misguided gold-digger who, underneath it all, hides a heart of gold, but it doesn’t. Because Diaz plays the self-obsessed, conniving Ms. Halsey so convincingly, it is all but impossible to find her character redeemable. Frankly, I rooted more for Hannibal Lecter’s successful escape in Silence of the Lambs than I did for this wretch-of-a-teacher’s ultimate happiness. Of course, the plot contains a small, uninspired attempt at her redemption, but this chick just has too much baggage to believe—or care--that she’s changed. Oh yeah, it’s not funny either. This teacher gets a generous D-.

Crazy Stupid Love Warner Brothers

“A modern, adult story that’s both uproariously funny and touchingly real.”

Cal Weaver (Steve Carrell) is a good man. He’s a doting father and a caring husband. Yet, his comfortable but simple existence unravels when his wife asks him for a divorce, and he finds himself thrust back into the dating scene. While drowning his sorrows at a local bar one night, he meets professional ladies-man, Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling), who takes bumbling Cal under his wing in order to teach him the tricks of his trade. However, Cal’s lovesick adolescent son, Robbie (Jonah Bobo), may be the right person to give Cal love advice.

The Review: It doesn’t seem fair to call this film a romantic comedy. On one hand, it’s both tangibly romantic and actually funny. Yet, on the other hand, its complexity defies the genre. This film has several subplots that are effortlessly interwoven and culminate in a surprise twist that you won’t see coming. Likewise, the film avoids indulging in the myth of the happily-ever-after, which is all too typical of the typical romantic comedy. Instead, it aspires to something more real. The small interactions feel organic and unforced, and although the situations are often exaggerated for comic effect, the earnestness of each character is never in doubt. Ultimately, it conveys a big message for a comedy: true love takes work and a certain degree of forgiveness. These meat-heads cop every lame rock stereotype within the first two songs. Destined to be forgotten and in the cut-out bins before you can say “Hinder”.

“self-titled” CD (Faulty Records) An epic 11piece band from Hawaii? ATA mine a territory less “tropical” and more whimsical. Self-described as “avantegarde dirty gypsy klezmer jazz indie anti-folk rock”, there’s melodic pop sounds, heavier groove weirdness with kazoos, funky horns, anthemic Arcade Fire-meets-Clash rockers, and more. The schizophrenic approach may lose some, and although there’s some good stuff here, it all seems too “kitchen sink” to gel.

Bonnie Prince Billy

“Wolfroy Goes To Town” album (Drag City) Louisville native Will Oldham is an indie folk/country icon, and this, his long-awaited (16th?) album, marks a return of sorts to his earlier, starker acoustic days. Whereas his last major release was more upbeat and countryinfluenced, this one’s spare, intimate, and almost meditational. Highlights include the lonely English-style folk of “New Whaling”, the rollicking “Quail and Dumplings”, and the stunningly sad “We Are Unhappy”. Superb! — Todd Zachritz

A nice and historical compilation of Cope’s promotional videos, dating back to his days fronting Liverpoolbased post-punk band The Teardrop Explodes, though sadly this only takes us up to 1990 or so. Where are the later Cope videos? Ah, the perils of licensing. Regardless, this is a worthy timepiece. I first heard of Cope through MTV and his enigmatic “World Shut Your Mouth” video, which is thankfully included here. From that slice of new-wave rock, and from the rest of the more pop-friendly tracks here, there’s little evidence of Cope’s later (and current) fascination with avante garde psychedelic musics and Krautrock. “Copeulation”’s 14 tracks of 80’s-era videos are well-worth a shot for Cope fans, but those on the fence may want to ignore these often dated visuals and silly poses. — Todd Zachritz

among others), O’Hearn has quietly crafted a gorgeously subtle album of quietly introspective songs that skirt the lines between ambient and new age. “Transitions” consists of 9 mostly electronic instrumentals, based around emotive melodies and simple motifs. Don’t expect any sort of bombast or cinematic drama here, as tracks like “Patterns” are brilliantly low-key, playing with sub-melodies and fragile minimalist structures. If you find Brian Eno too cold and detached, O’Hearn’s “Transitions” would make an ample replacement, with plenty of mesmerizing, lilting atmospheres. — Todd Zachritz

Beginning with the texturally complex, almost psychedelic “Bending And Floating”, this veteran Californian electronic duo

have taken aspects of their last effort (the all-classic rock covers album “These Eyes Before”) and synthesized them into the band’s signature dark-edged electro-rock template. “Lucky 13” is a slinky, seductive groove with an almost bluesy swagger. “In The Frequency” is a low-and-slow trip-hop gem, and “Slow Down” is a trippy kaleidoscope of ambient rock. “Further From Anything” begs for club play. There are other standouts, as well, but I’d be rambling. Suffice to say that Collide’s expert synthesis of electronica, moody rock, and dark dance is among the finest you’re likely to hear anytime soon. “Counting To Zero” finds Collide firing on all cynlinders. The second album from a Londonbased instrumental post-rock act, Winchester Club’s driving, swirling rock will be most appreciated by fans of stuff like Explosions In The Sky or the shoegazer set. You know the formula already: tensionbuilding guitars and pummeling drums, double bass players, dramatic

dynamism, and moments of lonely quiet interspersed within tumultuous cascades of guitar. There’s only 5 tracks here, but they are, after all, lengthy pieces. Witness the 12minutes of “The Lonely Robot”, or the gradual 15-minute buildup of “R.D. Laing (Little Chemical Straightjackets)”. They haven’t really found their own unique voice yet, but, nonetheless, this is fine work. — Todd Zachritz

rom the glitchy electronic noise that opens the album on “Art Of Almost”, it’s obvious that this is Wilco moving back into their more playful experimental mode, after a couple of albums of more straightforward rock. The noise gives quickly way to become a rather gentle folk-pop song before exploding into a swell of postKrautrock improv jamming. “Dawned On Me” is a scrappy (yet mature) slice of Summertime pop, complete with Jeff Tweedy whistling, whereas “Black Moon” goes more introspective and low-key, proving that Tweedy and company are at the top of their class. The remainder of the album beautifully and skillfully teeters between well-written and upbeat pop songs and almost somber melancholia. The 12-minute “One Sunday Morning” combines a disjointed guitar/ piano melody with minimalist drones and reflective words from Tweedy to spectacular effect. It’s a perfect bookend to this magnificent album. — Todd Zachritz
