The word “cirque” has become synonymous with epic acrobatics, defying gravity, and, overall, a show that makes memories. However, when Cirque Dreams “Pop Goes The Rock!” rolls into town on Tuesday, February 28th at 7:30 p.m., the show will be as focused on using your memories as it is on making new ones. “The shows are so visually stunning to begin with… everyone is used to watching the spectacle on stage from these amazing performers. Now they get to see that while they’re hearing songs that spark a memory of a feeling or an impression in their mind,” says Neil Goldman, founder and artistic director of Cirque Dreams. “For some seasoned theatre goers and tour audiences, we use Frank Sinatra’s “Call Me Irresponsible” and Roger Miller’s “King of the Road,” but the song choices range all the way to Britney Spears’ “Womanizer” and Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful”.” Cirque Dreams has been around since 1993. Goldman says, “In the late 1980s, I was producing entertainment for corporate America and there was a large corporation that engaged me to create a variety show for an international conference. The attendees were coming from all over the world, so I had 2 years to put the show together. I was able to

start traveling the world…that was my original inspiration when I came back and started the show and formed the company in 1993.” Over time, as the Internet has made it easier for people to see art and culture from around the world with the click of a button, being truly surprised by a live show has become more difficult. That is not the case with Cirque, though; a truly family-friendly show, the audience is often full of children, parents, and grandparents, all of whom are watching acrobats, dancers, and athletes perform feats of strength and amazement. Even though “Pop Goes the Rock!” has a musical theme, it is still a Cirque show—you can still expect mind-blowing performers. Goldman says, “There will be performers flying through the air and there will be amazing, world class acrobatics, and that’s going to be blended with the music to give the music a little bit of a different meaning than
what the lyrics were originally intended to mean. I think that’s one of the fun parts of the journey and the experience that the audience was going to have. They’re going to hear a word like “jump” or “fly” or “never let me go” and think of something completely new.” As if the show was not exciting enough, the sets, costumes, makeup, and performers are designed to reflect the environment of a carnival funhouse— further adding to a surrealist tableau. “This Cirque Dreams show rocks. It’s a culmination of everything that Cirque Dreams has created since 1993 and that audiences have come to expect from a show that includes the word “cirque” in it. It’s taken over a year and a half to put together over 20 songs through special arrangements with Sony ATV music and find just the right songs—that span generations!—that will create this amazing entertainment experience for audiences of all ages,” says Goldman.
It is hard to believe that a show like this could be in a town like Evansville for one night only—it seems like the sets, costumes, and performers would not be mobile enough to justify just one show in each city. “Pop Goes the Rock!” would make sense in Vegas or on Broadway—however, due to the way the show is structured, Goldman says they are able to bring Vegas and Broadwaystyle shows to different venues. “It’s a whole new layer and texture that’s never been brought to the stage. To be able to put it together under the cirque dreams brand…it’s a very big production, and to be able to bring it to places like Evansville for one night, it’s a unique experience. And that’s what our brand is good for. It’s not just like a spectacle on Broadway and in Vegas, to have folks in their own backyard… it’s something the caliber of what they’re seeing on TV,” says Goldman. “Pop Goes the Rock!” was not a show that Goldman came up with overnight; rather, he worked hard to ensure that all of the song choices were
appropriate for the acrobatics, and that the inspiration behind it—using nostalgia to build new memories—would be honored. “This is the fourteenth production that we’ve created, and we’re not running out of ideas, but I pay close attention to the fans and the audiences and what they’re watching and seeing. With social media evolving as quickly as it does—YouTube and Facebook— people’s attention spans are becoming so short,” says Goldman. “Twenty years ago, I would go to the state school of contortion in Mongolia and I would get on a plane and fly over to China, and I would meet with an amazing acrobatic association… it was a lot more unique and special than it is today. Now you can Google that and within seconds see unusual forms of artistry around the world. In the last few years, the reality television show and talent show craze, there are very, very talented people around the world and they are not just in movies and on television shows. I started thinking how could we take this to the next level, how can we take things that people are used
to seeing and want to see but heighten the experience. Music evokes emotions. And Cirque Dreams is a show that’s full of emotions. I wanted to combine those two together and let the audience create their own experience… The show, to date, has been my longest preproduction,” says Goldman. Perhaps the most fun thing about the new “Pop Goes the Rock!” show is that no one knows exactly what it will look like yet—even Goldman says that shows evolve once they get in front of an audience, and as of now, the show is still in rehearsals. By the time it gets to Evansville, it will have only been on the road for two weeks. When asked if he could tell secrets about the show—much to the disdain of those of us with short attention spans—Goldman declined, saying, “There are a lot of special effects and moments that I don’t want to talk about yet— It’s a surprise!” — Katie Darby-Mullins Tickets can be purchased at The Centre Box Office or www.ticketmaster.com, and start at $21.00.

he premier contemporary Christian music scene will sweep into Evansville in all of its monotheistic glory on February 2nd and the new Ford Center downtown will be ground zero. Winter Jam is a homegrown concept planted and nurtured by one of the festival’s headlining bands, NewSong. According to NewSong guitarist and vocalist Billy Goodwin, it all started in Greenville, SC, sixteen years ago as a cure for cabin fever. “It was just one concert with a promoter friend and the idea was to have a neutral venue like an arena or a civic center and open it up to anybody without a ticket.” In a venue that only accommodated 6,000 people about 8,000 showed up, forcing the band to turn people away. Since then the tour has branched out date by date, artist by artist and year by year to become one of the top-attended and top-grossing tours in the nation, and it no longer has to turn away anyone who is willing to listen. Winter Jam’s casual approach to admittance is similar to a cover charge, asking only $10 at the door—music to any concertgoer’s ears. To provide maximum entertainment and inspiration for the paying masses, Winter Jam also boasts illusionist Brock Gill and speaker Nick Hall. According to Winter Jam’s official website, this year’s tour includes ten bands/musicians such as Skillet, Sanctus Real, Kari Jobe, Building 429 and For King and Country. These performers will be visiting 47 cities before the tour comes to an end. “We have grown and exploded beyond anything we could have dreamed or imagined,” said Goodwin. The fathers of the tour, NewSong, formed in 1981 in Valdosta, Georgia, at Morningside Baptist Church. They are an accomplished band with a Grammy nomination, twenty #1 Christian radio singles and a #1 Adult Contemporary single all under their ecclesiastical belts. The band is quite a presence on-stage with half as many members as Parliament Funkadelic. Its seven members include

News4U: Who or what is your spiritual inspiration? Billy Goodwin: My spiritual inspiration is basically Jesus, committing my life to him, living for him and basing all my decisions on what I think he wants me to do. Humanly speaking, there are so many people who have had an influence on me but one of the aspects of my Christian life is to not put too much faith or trust or hope into a human because they will all let you down. Billy Graham is one of my heroes, I love him and I believe he is one of the most godly men to live in my lifetime. Ultimately, I keep my focus on Jesus and the fact that he is never going to change. I’m sure, then, through His teachings you have learned to forgive all those people that have wronged you and disappointed you in the past? Absolutely. You can’t harbor grudges or hatred in your heart, it tears you up. If someone has done something to directly offend you, you make an effort to reconcile. If it doesn’t come you have to forgive them and go on with your life. What is the main purpose of Winter Jam? We are trying to point people to Jesus and to guide people into having a personal relationship with Him. That is the motivation behind all we do. That has been our motivation and our heart for over 30 years. — Nick Durcholz Winter Jam starts at 7 p.m. on February 2nd at the Ford Center. Tickets cannot be purchased through Ticketmaster. Admission is a $10 donation at the door for general admission seating.
New Song
A
rguably one of the hottest country-pop acts in the past decade, it can safely be said that Lady Antebellum has achieved their well-earned international stardom the “old fashioned” way. The trio made up of members Dave Haywood, Hillary Scott and Charles Kelly formed in 2006 in Nashville and took a very short amount of time to start creating a buzz. Lady Antebellum then put out their first album which featured chart-toppers like “Love Don’t Live Here” and “I Run to You.” The trio’s early success would pale in comparison to the five-time Grammy winning album, “Need You Now.” “We never expected to be thrust into the international spotlight the way we were...from the success of just one song,” says Kelly. “It was six months or so after the album came out that we were finally able to play overseas. When we got there, we were floored at the life that ‘Need You Now’ had taken on. The power of that one song really changed the scope of our entire career at home and in all these places we had only dreamed of playing.” “Need You Now” spawned three number one singles including “Need You Now,” “American Honey” and “Our Kind of Love.” Lady Antebellum will be filling the Ford Center to capacity on February 27, 2012 as they bring their “Own The Night” Tour to Evansville in support of their new album. “Own The Night” features yet another number one hit “Just a Kiss” and recently released single “We Owned The Night.” All three members of the group are quite excited about the translation of the new album to their live performances.
“‘We Own The Night’ opens the album,” says Haywood, “and I really love this song. We reworked the title slightly to make it present tense for the album title- ‘Own The Night.’ When people come to our live show it’s a call to action. Be confident, live in the moment and enjoy the experiences you are going through (and) own them. That’s the premise of what we wanted to say.” Concert-goers will be treated to a live experience which was directly influenced by the band members. “Listening to the track (“We Own The Night”) inspired me to visualize our live show,” Scot said. “I grabbed a legal pad and began drawing out the stage. That was the first sign to me that the song would be a cornerstone of this third album. Tickets are currently on-sale at the Ford Center box office, Ticketmaster locations, Ticketmaster.com or by calling (800) 745-3000. — Joel Easton All quotations were taken from Lady Antebellum’s press releases. f you’re looking to support both local organizations and talent, The 2012 Really Big Show, coming to The Centre’s Aiken Theatre on Saturday, February 11th at 7 p.m., is a good way to go.
Put on by Evansville ARC, a not-for-profit organization whose goal is to advance the value of and respect for all individuals with disabilities, the Really Big Show contributes to the community by providing services that promote development, employment, and independence.
Jeff Lyons is back this year to host The Really Big Show. The Really Big Show is a variety show in its 10th year, which means that though there are several performers and acts that people are excited to see again, there are also a lot of big surprises. Denise Seibert, Director of Development for Evansville ARC, says, “This year’s show will be another entertaining show for our audience. This year’s theme is ARC Trek: Boldly Going Where No Really Big Show Has Gone Before … We’ve never explored outer space during a show! An exciting part of The Really Big Show is the element of surprise. We try to keep the audience guessing as to what will happen next and who

The group, Soundproof, take the stage at The Really Big Show in 2011. will be on the stage with a talent they did not expect! And given that the show has a space theme, the audience can expect to see local residents playing some notable characters, such as Captain Kirk, Spock, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, and much more!” That doesn’t mean your old Really Big Show favorites won’t be there, though; Seibert is quick to say,
“The audience can expect a lot of variety. We have Matt Grisham, an illusionist, and the Evansville Fire Family is making an appearance. Barbara Santora, a jazz singer, is performing, as well as The Classical Guitar Society of Evansville. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Really Big Show without Gina More singing. We also have Mayor Lloyd Winnecke performing, and Brad Ellsworth will be onstage at some point during the show. On top of that, Jeff Lyons, the Chief Meteorologist for 14 News, is hosting.” Perhaps the most exciting thing about the Really Big Show is that it’s put on and produced locally; all of the talent comes from the Tristate. “The show is written, created, and produced by a nearly all-volunteer cast and crew. In 2011, 179 dedicated volunteers provided more than 1,665 hours of time and talent to bring The Really Big Show to the Centre stage. Net proceeds from the show benefit the areas of greatest need at Evansville ARC. In 2011, the show’s net proceeds were $93,000. In the past, we have raised as much as $125,000 to support our programming. Attendance for the show usually numbers between 1,400 and 2,000 people,” says Seibert. Tickets are only $20 for adults and $10 for children 12 and younger; they can be purchased at the Centre box office or Ticketmaster locations. You can also buy VIP tickets, which cost $100 but include prime seating and admission to the Curtain Call Reception following the show, through the Evansville ARC website, www.EvansvilleARC.org. — Katie Darby-Mullins

hough most people would say they would like to be stronger, fitter, and more active, often, the idea of spending the time to actually train a body in the ways that are necessary drives people away from the gym in droves.
The Flex 151 plan can help you achieve results in an unbelievable 15 minutes, once a week. It’s certainly not traditional exercise rhetoric, but the science behind it is solid. Co-owner and personal trainer Shaun Angel explains that, “People are skeptical—and for good reason. People are told you aren’t doing enough, you need to do more days a week and lift more— but the answer isn’t more, it’s more quality. What we do is…a type of training called slow motion lifting. It’s basically high intensity training. We don’t measure repetitions or time on the clock for indicators of a great workout. With high intensity training, we measure time over tension (or load)—it’s basically how much is the muscle actually contracting and working during the workout minus the break period, talking and have somebody perform the lift until they can’t perform the lift any longer.” This is also good for patients who have joint and mobility problems. The workout is on top-of-the-line equipment called Exerbotics, also known as isovelocity computerized strength training equipment. What this means is that Angel or one of the other personal trainers at Flex 151 is able to gauge what intensity your workout should be from a computer in the machine and then they are able to program the workout specifically to your needs. “We have a good program and we harness technology to get results in a safe way, but we do it with the least amount of injury that we’ve been able to find. We computerize and control variables like how fast you move and if you put undue stress on the joints. That’s where I see the benefit,” says Angel. And though it’s easy to disregard Angel’s opinion—after all, he does work there—he actually started as a client at Flex 151. “I started as a client and liked it so much that I wanted to start training— then we [he and his wife, Molly] decided we wanted to buy into the company.” Flex 151 makes it as easy as possible to try their methods and see if they match with your lifestyle. You don’t have to sign a long-term contract, you can make appointments online and best of all, they are affordable. Angel says that for the cost of most people’s gym membership, they can attend Flex 151—with their own personal trainer. — Katie Darby-Mullins

Sewing is More Than It Seams
Sewing is not some foregone talent from the past; it is an activity that is alive, well and thriving in Evansville’s eastside. Sewing is a way of life for the experienced seamstress and an art form of intrigue for the beginner. A gifted seamstress has the ability to take an ordinary piece of cloth and create an outfit tailored to fit an individual’s unique attributes. Learning the skill of sewing can help to refurbish outdated clothing by redesigning, mending, or tailoring the clothing so that it fits once again, even when attributes have…well, shifted over the years. News 4U contacted the owner of Let’s Sew, LaQuinta Schum, to learn more about the business of sewing. What is Let’s Sew? Let’s Sew is a new twist on an old concept for fabrics stores. Our focus is on fashion sewing and textiles. Our soft opening was December 29, 2011, and we celebrated our grand opening on January 25, 2012. A few of our goals include: • Bringing high quality goods to the Evansville market • Educating the sewing and non-sewing community • Providing sewing tips/techniques to both experienced and beginners Tell us about your background and your interest in sewing. Although I hold a CPA degree, my passion is sewing. My Grandaunt taught me how to sew when I was eight years old. While a student at SIU Carbondale, I studied textiles; I then began to teach sewing in the college lab as a proctor. My credentials include: • The Martha Pullen Company Teaching License (September 2000) • Traveling and teaching through MPC as an educator • Being a certified Palmer/Pletsch Sewing Associate in Master LevelSewing Instruction and Pattern Fitting
• Being a Trained Sewing Instructor for the Sewing and Craft Alliance Can you explain a little bit about textiles? When I speak of textiles, I am referring to cloths and trims. Our focus is fashion textiles. These fabrics are great for making fashion clothing. Below are a few of the fashion textiles that I endorse: • Wool – Italy, England and Europe (cashmere and camel hair suiting) • Cottons – Switzerland, Italy and the U.S. (organic cottons are also available) • Silk (various countries) • Polyester One of your goals is to educate the sewing and non-sewing community; are you offering sewing classes? Yes we are. Currently, we are developing our class list. Our classes will instruct and encourage both experienced and beginning sewing enthusiasts. We will also be offering a series of classes for beginners to help them with their “Uh-oh” moments. What sewing tips would you offer to beginners? Advanced? Beginners: Purchase the best sewing machine you can afford, new or used. Advanced: Take classes to improve your skills, and break projects into small units to maximize your time. Do you offer discounts? Yes. We have a 5% membership club discount as well as a student discount on supplies for people who are enrolled one of Let’s Sew’s classes. — Ann Utley Visit or contact at Let’s Sew at 4400 E. The City of Romance
P
aris is considered to be one of the most romantic cities in the world. When you think of Paris, the iconic spots that come to mind may be the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Arc de Triomphe, and Notre Dame Cathedral. Those attractions are always great to visit, but, this time, take a trip off the beaten path to Paris’s top five most romantic sites. 1) Cimetiere de Pere-Lachaise
This cemetery is the resting place of many well-known figures. Jim Morrison and Oscar Wilde are among the more famous buried here, but Héloïse and Abelard are by far the most romantic. During the twelfth century, many aspects of life were dominated by the Church. Peter Abelard was an independent scholar and philosopher, who dared to question Church doctrine. Héloïse was the niece of Notre Dame’s powerful Canon Fulbert. Héloïse needed an education, so Abelard was hired to give her private instruction. The laws of the time would forbid such a relationship, but they soon could not resist the power of their physical desires. When Héloïse became pregnant, they had to flee Paris and marry in secret. When the news reached her uncle, he was enraged at the disgrace and sent a team of thugs to punish Abelard by castration. Disgraced, Abelard retired to a monastery and Heloise to a convent. Their passion carried on over the next two decades in perhaps the most famous series of love letters in history. In 1817 Josephine Bonaparte had them entombed together in Pere-Lachaise.
2) Pont des Arts
At one time the two riverbanks of the Seine were like different cities, royalty on the right and commoners on the left. In the nineteenth century, Napoleon commissioned this metal bridge crossing the Seine. It has always been a pedestrian bridge and a popular meeting point for lovers. Today, couples come here to declare their love by fixing padlocks to its metal side grilles and throwing away the key.
3) Square du Vert-Galant
This teardrop-shaped park was created as a tribute to Henri IV, who was known for his passionate affairs and whose statue overlooks the park. This centuries-old romantic hotspot is still the place where lovers come for quiet picnics and romantic strolls along the Seine.
4) Musée de la Vie Romantique
The building that now houses The Museum of Romantic Life was once the home of painter Ary Scheffer. His friends Frédéric Chopin and George Sand (Amantine Lucile Dupin) were lovers and among many influential artists of this period. George Sand was a liberated woman and great novelist who managed to successfully divorce her husband and keep control of her children at a time when such actions by a woman were unheard of. The music of Chopin plays in the gardens where you can enjoy tea in the greenhouse.

5) Basilique du Sacré-Coeur (Sacred Heart)
While the five-domed white church has the look of a twelfthcentury Byzantine church, its construction did not begin until 1875. The structure was a kind of penitence by the French after a siege by the Prussian army. The interior features an impressive mosaic in which Christ exposes his sacred heart burning with love and compassion for humanity. A climb of two hundred and sixty feet up the spiral stairs to the top of the dome gives an unobstructed panoramic view of Paris. A visit to these romantic sites will make you fall in love with Paris all over again. — Pam Reimann Pam Reimann operates Passport to Adventure and More custom tours and travel planning. ith spring break coming up, people all over the nation are trying to scrape together enough money to go on a trip as the winter ends. Many people will head somewhere tropical like Florida or even somewhere out of the country like Cancun or the Bahamas; some people take a trip ‘across the pond’ to Europe; and some people spend the beginning of spring donating their time to alternative spring breaks. But what is the one thing that all of these trips have in common? You need to start saving now! Luckily, there are some things that you can do now that will save you money in the near future. For example—
Have a plan
By having a plan going in, you can save a lot of money. Are you going to need a hotel room? Are you flying? Renting a car? How many beds will you need for you and your friends? If you start planning now, flight prices are much lower—and sometimes, on websites like Priceline.com and Hotwire.com, you can “bundle” a hotel and flight, saving you money on both.
Know what your money is worth
This is two-fold. If you’re staying in the States, knowing what your money is worth can be as simple as making sure not to indulge in a $20 cocktail—especially when you could buy all of the necessary ingredients to make said cocktail for much less. But if you’re going overseas, this means you literally need to know what your money is worth by being aware of conversion rates. If you’re headed south to Mexico, you’re in good shape, as the American dollar is worth more than the peso; however, you lose money on the conversion rates in Europe. Be aware of this and plan accordingly.

Spring Break Planning
I know, we all learned this principle in kindergarten, but over spring break it’s more applicable than ever. By sharing a car, you can split gas prices—the more passengers you have, the smaller the amount you have to pay. In fact, if one of your friends drives a gas-efficient car like a Prius, you can cut gas prices even more by taking their car—a sure-fire way to cut costs (and stress). By sharing a hotel room, you can also split that cost. But perhaps the least obvious (and easiest) way to share is to share dinner. Most restaurants serve portions that are more than big enough for two people; by sharing a meal, you leave a little extra money for dessert. Bon voyage, and have a good spring break! — Katie Darby-Mullins

Esthetic Perfection
Everyone can benefit from a little “me” time now and then. Esthetic Perfection, which is located in Evansville’s east side, is a place where solace and pampering combined with an array of esthetic services can help you to look and feel beautiful inside and out. We spoke with Surbhi Surana, the owner of Esthetic Perfection, about her background, her experiences, and the types of the many services offered at Esthetic Perfection, such as facial threading, full-body waxing, facials, and lash extensions.
N4U: How did you become interested in esthetics? I used to watch my mother thread and began to experiment with threading myself at the age of nine. Over time, I perfected this talent and began threading friends. Eventually, I realized the demand for threading as well as the demand for other beauty services, so I decided to pursue studies in esthetics. Originally, I opened the salon under the name, A Touch of India; however, I have since renamed the business Esthetic Perfection to better reflect the services we offer.

What is unique about Esthetic Perfection? Facial threading is a skilled technique and not widely available. We also offer Brazilian waxing. Brazilian waxing must be administered correctly, or hair will remain. At Esthetic Perfection, the hair is gone! Local Business Offers Beauty, Memories It’s FEBRUARY! The month in which we celebrate…Ground Hog Day! What? Not your first thought? February also ushers in Valentine’s Day, filling the air with love, romance, and beauty. For many people, the month of February evokes images of cards, chocolate hearts and, of course, jewelry. News 4U asked jewelry expert Tracy Zeller, of Tracy Zeller Enterprises, to share her expertise and fine jewelry insight with our readers. What we learned will surprise you! The beauty of the jewelry business, is the opportunity to see how lives can be impacted through jewelry. A simple purchase can become an heirloom three or four generations down the road. The original owner may hold only a few of the memories reflected in a single piece of jewelry. From a business perspective, Tracy values her community, espousing the motto “Live to Give.” As a local jeweler, Tracy says she feels “privileged to live, work and give back to help support those who work so hard to meet the many needs within our community.” Through restoration, beauty and joy can be found in old bent or broken pieces of jewelry. Antique or inherited jewelry often hides in the confines of a jewelry box; however, these treasures can be transformed into masterpieces to be cherished and worn. Engraving is another way to personalize almost anything: a ring, a watch, a briefcase or even a wooden box top. As the only jewelry store in the tri-state with this capability, it is easy for Tracy to memorialize any occasion with a date, a poem, or even a child’s signature inside something as small as a ring. Jewelry is a personal and sentimental investment that creates and instills lasting memories; therefore, it is imperative that you make an informed decision in any jewelry purchase. Selecting a personal jeweler you can trust is key. A personal jeweler does not just sell jewelry, but is genuinely interested in making sure that the recipient absolutely loves the piece. To help identify an ideal jewelry fit, many questions should be asked, such as, “Does the recipient wear white gold (silver) or yellow gold?” At the end of the day, whether you plan to spend $50 or $5,000, if the recipient does not absolutely love the jewelry, it will not be worn and the expenditure will be wasted. Jewelry is not just a purchase, but rather a treasured memory investment that can last a lifetime… and beyond. — Ann Utley Tracy Zeller Enterprises is located at 111 S. Red Bank Road, Evansville, IN 47712. For information or questions, contact Tracy Zeller at 812-423-4376 or visit their website at TracyZeller.com. DIY - how to
W
hile most of the continental United States likes to celebrate Mardi Gras because of the colors, foods, and festivities, not everyone knows the history or significance behind one of the most important items at the Mardi Gras celebration: the king cake. There are so many requests for these cakes in the Tristate area that the Donut Bank actually makes the cakes for order from the beginning of the Epiphany season (which is January 6th this year) until Fat Tuesday. Chris Kempf of the Donut Bank explains king cakes in this way: “It’s a round, sweet dough— some have filling, some don’t—but ours has a cinnamon paste filling. And it’s tradition during the time of Epiphany, a time of celebration.” Kempf says one of the defining features of a king cake isn’t just the filling or ingredients inside it: “Inside each king cake was traditionally a baby or a gold coin—the baby was based on the Christ child—and during the parties that would
happen throughout that time of year, whomever would be served the slice with the baby or coin, folklore had it that they would have seven days of good luck.” The king cake is known for its bright colors (and sometimes the inclusion of beads). Kempf says, “It’s decorated in the three colors of Mardi Gras, which are purple, green, and gold. And each one of those colors has a particular representation: purple is justice, green is faith, and gold represents power. We decorate it with those colors, and we’ll also put bead necklaces on the cake and bake them fresh every morning and sell them. We have a very good package, too, it’s very, very festive, and we sell quite a few of them.” Of course, making a king cake is fun (see inset for recipe), but if you need one in a pinch, you’re lucky to be in a town where you can order one—the Donut Bank takes orders through Fat Tuesday. Check out their website www.donutbank.com to find the location nearest you. — Katie Darby-Mullins
King Cake Recipe One easy way to make a king cake at home is to take: • 4 ounces of cream cheese • 1/2 cup of brown sugar • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/4 cup raisins (it’s best to soak the raisins in hot water first, but this isn’t necessary)
• 1/2 cup pecans (also optional) for the traditional filling.
Rolls: You need two ‘rolls’ for the cake, which can be made from 12 crescent rolls from the can.
Icing: • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar • 3 1/2 tablespoons cream • 1 teaspoon vanilla • Mardi Gras colored — purple, green, or yellow sugar crystals or food coloring
Directions: Mix the ingredients for the filling together in a large bowl and then preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Then, you can use either a cookie tray or pizza tray on which to unroll the crescent dough—try to make sure the triangle edges all line up. Put the filling inside and fold the small points of the triangles over, closing the cake up. Make sure to put a coin or a baby (found at any holiday novelty shop) into the cake—and then bake for 20 to 25 minutes. Then mix the ingredients for the icing in a bowl and pour over the cake once it’s cooled.

Valentine’s Day Shopping
F
ew holidays are more gift-oriented than Valentine’s Day, which is part of why it strikes fear into the hearts of couples everywhere. What do you get a new boyfriend? What do you get your wife—who already has everything she wants? Fortunately, there are many ways to give gifts that don’t break the bank—or heart of your loved one. For example:
Technology
There are plenty of good techie gifts this season that can prove helpful your partner’s daily life; devices that both keep things organized and let you have fun while doing it. A GPS device, like a Garmin, is a great gift for someone whose love is always on the road. This gift says you’re thinking of them and that you want them to be safe—even when they’re traveling away from you. These gifts range from $79 to $599, so there are a variety of options for any budget. You can also give an ever-popular tablet, like an iPad or a Kindle Fire. Tablets range in price from $199 to $599.
Tickets Sometimes the best Valentine’s Day gifts are for things that you can do together. From something as simple as pre-purchasing movie tickets and a gift card for a nice dinner to buying tickets to one of the big events coming through the Ford Center soon, this gift is the promise of a date—and more importantly, of a night out where you guys can spend time together. Lady Antebellum will be at the Ford Center on February 26th; if your partner likes country music, this could be the perfect Valentine’s Day gift. Tickets for the show range from $39.50-$49.50. The Evansville Icemen also play lots of games throughout the season—ranging from $8 to $39, you can see a fun game and support a local team.

Entertainment Another way to really tailor your gift to your Valentine’s tastes is to buy movies or music—and then watch or listen together. A gift like this can even be part of a bigger plan; while a DVD or CD is not expensive (usually from $9.99 through $29.99, depending on the format), it’s easy to turn it into the center of a larger Valentine’s date. You can set up a restaurant at home and cook your sweetheart’s favorite cuisine—or even buy takeout at their favorite restaurant. Afterwards, it’s easy to spend the night on the couch watching a new movie or listening to a new CD. And if your partner is an audiophile, there are several places in town—like Joe’s Records on the West side—where you can still find both new and used vinyl.
Jewelry and Candy Of course, you can’t go wrong with the traditional standbys. Places like McCarty’s Jewelry - 250 S. Red Bank Road (812) 425-3916 have beautiful Shamballa bracelets that are sure to make your Valentine smile.
And if you’re looking for chocolate, there’s no place finer than Mike Lib’s - 864 S. Green River Road (812) 424-8750 – their pecan flipovers and assorted crèmes are to die for. — Katie Darby-Mullins Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309 • February 2012

APPS WORTH DOWNLOADING News 4U is proud to include students from the EVSC’s New Tech Institute as contributors.
Flixster 5/5 stars If you love watching movies, I strongly recommend downloading the movie app, Flixster. It is free for the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android, and Blackberry. Not only does this app let me locate movie theaters near me, but I can watch official movie trailers, search for upcoming films and DVD releases, get local show times from theaters nearby, and find information on any movie in the theater or on DVD. I have Flixster downloaded onto my iPod Touch so that in my free time, I can check for upcoming movies at nearby theatres, locate the movie theaters that are near me, and get information on the theater, show times, running lengths of each movie, and the movie rating. If you’re at a computer, you can also visit the Flixster Web site. I enjoy going to the movies with my younger siblings, but before we go, I always use the app to check the movie, its rating, and the trailer to make sure it is appropriate for them to watch. If you love movies, you’ll love Flixster. — Molly Brady
Gasbuddy 5/5 stars The free Gasbuddy App, compatible with Android and iPhone, allows you to type in your zip code or city and state along with the grade of gas you are looking to buy. It will then show gas stations and their prices from lowest to highest in and around your immediate location, conveniently providing the address of the gas station so that you can find it. If you are at a gas station, you can also update the price if it is different from the information the app gives you and earn points toward their prize giveaways. This app is especially useful on road trips where you might not be as familiar with the area or the gas prices as

you might be at home. Since you can enter the city and state, you do not necessarily have to have a GPS; however, if you do have a GPS in your phone, you can use the “find gas near you” option and not even have to know what city you are in! Because of the useful information, moneysaving potential, and user-friendliness of this app, I would give it five out of five stars for any driver who purchases— and has to be budget-conscious about—gas. — Lacey McCloud
Hello Wallet App 4/5 stars Have you ever had a problem with spending too much money and not budgeting so you could still pay your bills on time? If so, you need to know about the Hello Wallet App— which is an iPod Touch and iPhone App. This application provides location-based services to improve its budgeting capabilities for each person. To start out, you have to enter the total amount of money you will spend on bills each month; then, of course, you have to enter the amount of money you will make each month, along with your pay dates and the dates that the bills are due. This app will then compare all of your bills to the amount of money you make to show you how much money you will have left over. It will also figure a budget day-by-day to show you how much money you should have based on your finances and when bills must be paid. The only downside I see to this app is that it is only compatible with iPod Touch and iPhone. While it’s a great app, it is, unfortunately, just not compatible with a variety of mobile devices. — Arman Cooksey
Tango Video Calls 5/5 stars
Do you ever feel like looking at someone face to face when you’re talking to them on the phone? Tango Video Calling App allows you to video chat with another person on your webenabled phone, iPod Touch, or iPad. Talking with someone is as simple as tapping their name in your contact list, which instantly starts the call. On the other end, the receiving person’s device will ring and a list of options will appear. A person receiving a call can ignore it, accept it, or accept it with audio only. Be careful though; if your device doesn’t have a front-facing camera, you and the person you’re talking to won’t be able to see each other at the same time; in fact, you might find yourself looking at a totally oblivious person across the room. Tango even supports calling between different platforms, such as Apple and Windows phones. You can also leave a video message for someone if they can’t receive your call. The app comes with five free messages, but additional ones will cost you. The app is available on iPod Touch (4 th Generation), iPhone, iPad, Windows PCs, Windows Phone, and almost any device running Android 2.1 or higher. — Utah Ponce
When Technology Breaks…
A
s technology expands and improves, it’s inevitable that we, its users, face bugs and software issues. Luckily for the Tristate, Todd Veeck, owner of iPhone Todd, repairs all sorts of phones and tablet devices – largely iPhones, iPads, iPod Touches, Xboxes, and HTC phones. Veeck says, “I can fix anything. The main thing I see the most is screens. I can do anything from charging problems—batteries or charge ports, water damage, power buttons. And then on Xboxes, there’s the red ring of death, and I fix that.” iPhone Todd’s services are especially valuable in the Tristate area: The nearest Apple stores are in Louisville and Nashville, and that’s a pretty long drive to get a phone fixed. As far its business model, iPhone Todd started out the same way most businesses do – with the realization that there was an unmet need in the Tristate area for affordable phone and device care. “I’ve been doing it for about a year, and I started doing it because there are a couple places, but they’re charging anywhere from $20 to $100 more than me on some things. I was tired of paying that super high price to do something that I felt like I could do and love it,” Veeck says. Not only does iPhone Todd promise “the lowest price in town;” it also advertises repairs that start at just $10—and puts a focus on fixing your phone fast. While it acknowledges that some repairs take longer, iPhone Todd can fix some phones in as little as 10-20 minutes. However, the company makes clear that it values doing the job right above doing the job quickly. It’s good to know that in a time when we are dependent upon technology, there are people in the Tristate who can fix the occasional inevitable problem. — Katie Darby-Mullins Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309 • February 2012

localtalent Reanna Fuller
The Art of Business
A
rt comes in different forms and sizes, and so does success. This has proven to be particularly true for Reanna Fuller, who has paved the way for arts and business in developing new partnerships. Art works to connect culture and commerce and what people sometimes don’t understand is that there are a lot of public benefits associated with public art. In my mind, Reanna has created two characters: the Artist Me and the Business Me. These two characters address the artist as well as the business of art—while one is committed to making art, the other one believes in the art enough to support and promote it. Reanna Fuller is a business owner first and foremost: “I am one half of the dynamic duo that owns and operates The Ahh Spa, LLC.” Since graduating from Bodyworks Massage Therapy, she’s been cultivating her skills as Evansville’s most alluring Fashion Event Promoter. “The title of event planner and fundraiser came shortly after opening our office nearly 5 years ago.” Since then, Reanna has produced all kinds of events, but the most notable are her fashion trunk shows. These annual “Pin-Up” themed fashion fundraising events “host over a dozen local artists, dancers and performers and entertained over 300 people at this event which has benefited PAAWs Animal Rescue and Tri-State Food bank, as well as other local charities. We have also done many fashion shows around Christmas and Valentine’s Day, the Annual Red Hot Luau; and in 2011 marked the first annual Night Gallery Art Exhibit. The events typically take place in smoke-free bars in the Evansville area, and feature art, entertainment, dance performances, burlesque, comedy or fashion shows. 50 to 100% of the profits of the event go towards the chosen charity. We try to work with only local or family-owned businesses and organizations as we believe supporting our friends in the community and local economy comes first.”
To you, what is job satisfaction? Is your success only measured by the number of people through the doors?
“Before I opened Ahh Spa, LLC and started doing events on the side, I thought success was measured in money and all the things that come with keeping up with the Joneses. However, I learned that what really makes a

job satisfying is making other people happy and being able to give back to the community. When I first moved from Louisville, KY to Evansville ten years ago, I felt fairly dissatisfied with the lack of cool events and things to do in the area. Now I realize, you just have to make your own fun. I love the freedom, the interesting people I’ve met, the friendships I’ve made and the fun I’m having. And it’s great to see people pull out all the stops and get really dressed up for a night out on the town. It’s a LOT of work but it’s always worth it as we have been able to generate a lot of revenue for some great charities. I can’t imagine doing anything else with my life!”
So you are working on a big show for February called Mardi Bras? What can people expect when attending this event?
“Mardi Bras is Saturday, February 18 th at Casino Aztar Conference Center beginning at 7pm. This event was created by many fab ladies who were on The Aids Resource Group fundraising committee. It’s an amazing event that raises money for aids victims and testing in the Tri-State area! The event features a killer fashion show that showcases bras and lingerie created by local artists and people in the area. These bras are
auctioned off during the evening. We will also feature performances by the sassy and classy Burlesque Babes Behaving Badly, local belly dancers, and other entertainers. There will be themed drink specials and appetizers and art auctions as well. We encourage everyone to dress up as if they were attending a masquerade ball or carnival. It’s one of the most fun events that happens in Evansville and I’m thrilled to be involved.”
What projects do you have in the pipeline?
“Our upcoming projects involve a carnival-themed burlesque routine for Mardi Bras as well as helping the ARG gang plan the event, appearances by The Burlesque Babes Behaving badly at The Book Broker for Comic Book Day 2012, and then Pin-Up party and Night Gallery 2012!” — Tamatha Lant Contact The Ahh Spa and ask for me at 812-471-4990. ason Dicken and his wife, Leah, own four local Spudz-N-Stuff restaurants, where they sell freshlymade salads, big Philly-style subs, pita sandwiches, and if you look hard enough under the piles of cheese, vegetables, meat, sour cream, various crunchy bits, and baked potatoes.
“I had the concept a couple years, before I actually had a place,” said Jason Dicken. “I started with a chocolate shop in Washington Square Mall; then, we moved to doing baked potatoes, and then, I opened the first Spudz-N-Stuff on Pearl Drive about four and a half years ago.” Now, Spudz-N-Stuff has locations on the east side, downtown, and in Henderson, as well, and Dicken plans to open two more locations in the next year. I stopped by the East Side SpudzN-Stuff on Green River Road for lunch and was pleasantly surprised at the many menu offerings - almost 40 potato choices and another 20 salad and sandwich offerings, along with a kids section and brownies. On my table, an upright sign held a picture of The Bronco potato and vowed that “Underneath the Jalapeno, Beef, Pork, BBO, Cheese, and Fried Onions, There’s a Baked Potato!” Another reminded me that Spudz-N-Stuff would be happy to cater my tater.
I chose the Philly Cheese Steak Potato. The cook sizzled thin-sliced beef on a panini press and split a steaming baked potato. He squeezed on copious melted buttery stuff and added Cheez Whiz, hot steak, sauteed onions, green peppers and grilled mushrooms – and topped it with a sprinkle of grated cheddar. It was great, so big I couldn’t finish it, and the potato hiding under there was tasty all by itself, fluffy and creamy with a nice brown skin. I’d have to describe a Spudz-N-Stuff potato as a two-pound, open-faced hot sandwich that uses a baked potato instead of a bun. Steak, ground beef, taco beef, pulled pork, chicken, ham and vegetarian selections are offered. It’s a treat for those of us who avoid wheat, which is difficult when eating out. Is it healthy? Meh. It is noted that the American Heart Association has declared Idaho potatoes a heart-healthy food, and with lots of fiber, vitamin C, potassium, and a good bit of protein for a vegetable, they can be. localchefspotlight Throughout his long culinary career, Chef James Edwards of Logsdon’s in Boonville has had a continuing love affair with his favorite food—meat. The man loves meat. He learned the steak trade during a 12-year stint at the Hornet’s Nest, Evansville’s favorite north-side steak, chicken and catf ish institution. “When I met Rose and David Dewitt, who own Logsdon’s, I was running the kitchen at the Hornet’s Nest while [long-time Hornet’s Nest Chef] Joe Wagner wasn’t there,” he said. “I was the meat cutter at Logan’s Roadhouse for six years during that time too, so that led into the whole steak house thing.” When the DeWitts offered him a chance to put together a new steak-based restaurant with them, he moved to Chandler and got busy. “I used what I learned in the places I worked to come up with what we serve here,” he said. “I got to work with a lot of great people over the years and collected a little bit here and a little bit there. Joe taught me most of what I know. He was really good about letting people experiment. So to make a new menu you go through what you cooked over the years, what worked, what you think people will like and what will sell. You have to make money. So far it’s been working here—and I have great help, which is so important.” The best-selling entree at Logsdon’s is a grilled 10ounce aged choice ribeye, but the most commented-on dish is German fries, which contain strips of red and green

bell pepper. “I get more comments on the German fries with the peppers,” said Edwards. “You eat with your eyes first. We’re firm believers that the food has got to look beautiful going out.” Another of his favorites is the homemade broccoli cheese soup. “The broccoli cheese soup is a recipe I’ve used everywhere and people seem to love it,” he said, “but my favorite thing in the kitchen is still cutting James Edwards and grilling the steaks. I of Logsdon’s love meat. I love bacon. And I really just want to give people good food at a decent price.” This theory and the idea of beautiful food were both evident in the plate lunch I enjoyed while at Logsdon’s: a full steak-sized platter of homemade meatloaf (with tiny pieces of green pepper and a lightly caramelized ketchup topping, smothered in brown gravy) with mashed potatoes, green beans and bread. For $5.95. A leaf of purple curly kale adorned the plate, and the green beans were seasoned with just a touch of garlic, diced onion and the occasional red pepper flake. Edwards’ dreams for the future? “I would like to see this place grow and have one in Evansville. I love the challenge of opening up a new place. It’s worked out here—it really amazes me how well it’s doing, and so fast. It’s that whole theory of giving people good food at a fair price, and it’s shocking how word really spreads.” — Aimee Blume Logsdon’s does not accept reservations. n a time where an entire television network about food thrives, what’s better than seeing a live chef competition? Perhaps seeing a live chef competition that supports local restaurants and donates to a local charity, the Tristate Food Bank. The third annual Steel Cook competition is coming to Casino Aztar on Sunday, February 19 th from 5 to 9 p.m. Brian Jackson, who co-founded the event with Julie Karger three years ago, says that the excitement that the competitive environment breeds is his favorite reason to watch Steel Cook: “If you’ve never witnessed [Steel Cook], it’s basically really fine chefs trying to make stuff up as they go along, us(ing) ingredients and a circumstance that’s really primitive, and nothing counts but creativity. What we’ve given them (are) backyard tools to cook with and a small common pantry with about 80 items, and in every round they have to deal with a mystery item. Last year we gave them spam in one round.” Jackson explains how important ingenuity is to the competition: “If you don’t have a lot more up your sleeve than your elbow you’re not going to do well… we give you twenty minutes to create a sandwich and a side in the first two rounds. In the final round, you have forty minutes to create three dishes,” he says. Jackson emphasizes that part of the appeal is the local aspect: “If you look at the list of chefs we’ve invited over the years, they’re all chefs in locally owned restaurants that have tremendous experience all over the country—and many of these people all over the world. They’ve ended up in Evansville for one reason or another and now we get to see them compete against each other. You don’t have to go to a chain store—you don’t have to go to a national franchise. Evansville has tons of great locally owned and operated restaurants that are designed to feed Evansville.” If you want to watch, tickets are $25, but if you’d rather participate in the event, you get to taste things if you’re sitting at a corporate table. This year, there will be three awards given: the Steel Cook award (given by the judges); the people’s choice (voted on by people at the corporate tables); and the fan’s favorite, which anyone can vote for. Though Steel Cook is a fun night out—it’s at Casino Aztar, so even if you get tired of the cooking competition, you could easily step out for a game or a snack and come back—it’s also an important night for the community. “The Tristate Food Bank will be getting the charitable donation this year,” says Jackson. It seems fitting that an event centered on food would give food back. For ticket and food booth pricing as well as more information, please visit www.steelcook.org. — Katie Darby-Mullins

ommunity Marriage Builders hosts four yearly retreats that focus on strengthening the marriage bond—and with one coming up in March, registration is filling up fast. Though the retreat itself will be held March 16–18 at Lake Barkley in Kentucky, early registration will end on February 10. Make sure you register early because odds
are all spots will be filled by then. Andrew Gries, marketing and Web administrator, says that these weekends “help couples who are having issues or to keep couples strong.” So whether you and your spouse are having a rough season or the best one of your marriage, a weekend on the lake with Community Marriage Builders could be just what you need to keep moving forward together. — Katie Darby-Mullins

uperBride Sunday is inching closer and closer—February 5th from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.—and event director Nora Ferguson from South Central Media says that one of its most stunning features is how all-encompassing the day is. “Unlike other wedding events, SuperBride Sunday is an event that focuses ONLY on weddings. We have something for everyone— even guys—and it is free,” says Ferguson. Perhaps the best way to make use of the resources of SuperBride Sunday is to be as prepared as possible— which can mean knowing what (or who!) to bring and making sure to register for VIP Bride status. “If I were a bride who wanted to attend SuperBride Sunday, I would invite my mom, my future mother-in-law, sisters, Get your copy of the friends, and everyone in my 2012 Tri-State at Super wedding party to make a day of it. I suggest brides bring a Bride Sunday. Or, log on to notebook to take notes. Plan TristateBride.com to register to visit ALL (of) the vendors. and request a copy free! Each one offers something different,” says Ferguson. As for VIP status, you can only register at Brinker’s Jewelers at 111 South on the corner of Green River and the Lloyd, or go to a SuperBride on the Road Remote Broadcast— which you can find by listening to WIKY, WSTO, The Wolf, and Jack FM. Ferguson says, “We literally roll out the red carpet for VIPs and their guests, and they get into SuperBride for a special VIP-only hour from 9 to 10 a.m. VIPs get special VIP Bride goody bags filled with special prizes and offers. They are also registered for the VIP Bride honeymoon package from Colleen’s Concierege Travel. Throughout the day on SuperBride Sunday, VIP Brides have the chance to bo_ok a VIP Bride hair consultation from Bliss Salon or participate in a VIP-only gourmet tasting from a caterer.” But perhaps the best thing about SuperBride Sunday is that it offers some unique events: “I think one of my favorite parts of the day is the Cake Dive. We have developed a fantastic partnership with Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center to help them raise money for kids and adults with disabilities. Besides helping out a great local charity, it is a great way to win beautiful jewelry from Kruckenmeyer & Cohn and see how cakes from the Cup Cakery taste,” says Ferguson. — Katie Darby-Mullins Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309 • February 2012

T
a Piece oF tHe (american) Pie at Fast eDDY’s
homas Nicholas (Kevin Myers from the American Pie movies) will be in Evansville on Friday, February 24th and Saturday, February 25th at Fast Eddy’s. The first night, he’ll be signing autographs and meeting fans, and on the next night, he and his band, the Thomas Nicholas Band, will be playing. Nicholas has been familiar to movie-goers since the early 90’s when he was in Rookie of the Year, but it was American Pie that really made his career explode. “The success of the first American Pie opened a lot of doors for my career. I’m very thankful for that. I love to work and create,” he says. “There’s a new sequel to American Pie called American Reunion that hits theaters April 6th. It’s with all the original cast coming back together.” American Reunion is part of the reason that the Thomas Nicholas Band is on the road right now. “Universal Pictures currently has my band on a college tour to promote the release of American Reunion. We’re stopping at 20 schools in the Gibson tour bus. We’re giving away a chance to win a trip to the premiere of American Reunion,” says Nicholas. “I’m hoping to make Fast Eddy’s a regular tour stop for TNB.” That’s not to say that his band hasn’t been a priority for him in the last several years. The Thomas Nicholas Band has played over 350 shows and released three albums since 2008; they also have an EP scheduled for release in April. American Reunion will feature one of their new songs. Nicholas describes the band by saying, “I grew up listening to classic rock and grunge rock, so I think our sound lies somewhere in the middle of that.” Though Nicholas has found a way to combine parts of his acting and music careers, he acknowledges that his passions are very different: “My favorite part is getting to express what I want to say. As an actor I get to play characters that are written for me and take direction to accomplish that goal. Music is more of an example of who I am,” he says. — Katie Darby-Mullins

If the mere mention of Mardi Gras makes you hungry for crawfish and jambalaya and anxious to be in New Orleans, you might be surprised to find out that you can stay home and have pretty close to the same experience— at least when it comes to the celebration. Local restaurants and bars are going all out, and if you want to participate, here are a few places you could go: Archie & Clyde’s
8309 Bell Oaks Dr. • Newburgh, IN 812-490-7778 • ArchieAndClydes.com
Archie & Clyde’s in Newburgh will be celebrating mostly by adding Cajun food to their menu. Co-owner Danny Bradley says, “We’ll be having all the food specials…crawfish, etouffee, jambalaya, gumbo, red beans and rice, po’ boys— we do them all.” And if the extended food menu isn’t enough to attract you, they’re also bringing in regional Louisiana beers—the Abitas.
Beef O’ Brady’s
8177 Bell Oaks Dr. • Newburgh, IN 812-490-9464 • BeefOBradys.com
Beef O’ Brady’s is a great place to get a meal and catch a game, and that atmosphere of fun is precisely why they’re a good place to celebrate Mardi Gras.

THE SWEETNESS
WHO: Aly Tadros (vocals, classical guitar, vihuela), Chloe Charles (vocals, classical guitar), Sam Mclellan (vocals, upright bass), Douglas Jay Boyd (vocals, cajon/percussion) ABOUT THE BAND: The Sweetness is an Austin/Toronto based “antifolk” collective (soon to be Toronto/ NYC - we’re relocating!). Doug and Aly were touring as a singer/songwriter duo when they met Chloe at the 2010 International Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis, TN. Sam knew Chloe through the Toronto music scene she played in her band and worked on her record, so later that year Chloe brought Sam along to tour as a trio. Exactly a year after they met Chloe, the four got together at Folk Alliance to perform as each other’s backing bands. Their showcases immediately picked up a buzz and before long people were asking why not just perform as a band? WHAT THEY PLAY: Urban folk with a dash of soul/hip hop. We do a lot of four-part harmonies with heavy Cajondriven backbeats. Most people say they’ve never heard anything like it. HOW PEOPLE CAN FIND OUT MORE ABOUT YOU AND YOUR UPCOMING GIGS: Find us on www.WeTheSweetness.com for Canadian & US dates. LOCAL DATES: Feb. 26: Lamasco’s - 9PM Feb 28: Mojo’s Boneyard - 8PM Feb 29: Deerhead - 8PM

Get to Know Your Evansville Icemen! Jake Obermyer Defense
Jake Obermeyer is in his third full pro-season and first full campaign with the Evansville IceMen. A highscoring defenseman, Obermeyer is excited about both the game and the city. Coolest thing that’s happened to you on the ice this year? I’d say the home opener after we won. That was extremely fun. Any pre-game rituals? My pre-game ritual is always, before the game, I always like to nap for as long as I can. Eat lunch and go nap until I have to get ready to go to the game. Favorite thing about the new Ford Center? It’s fun to play there; it’s brand new, so it’s obviously a nice facility. The locker room is extremely nice. Favorite place to go to in Evansville? A fun place to go after hockey games with all the guys is Main Gate.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon
A
product of gaming giant Namco Bandai games, the Ace Combat series has provided gamers with a front row cockpit seat to intense aerial combat action. The series’ latest major console release is Assault Horizon, which gives aircraft aficionados a variety of missions or “sorties” so the fray stays fresh. The player straps on the drab flight suit of Colonel William Bishop— call sign “Warwolf 1”— using his aeronautical acrobatics and deadeye accuracy to stop a network of militant Russian terrorists. While flying as Colonel Bishop, the player usually engages in fierce dog fights or air-to-air combat weaving in, out and around hostile aircraft employing and evading sidewinder missiles and cannon fire. There is a riotous rhythm to the dog fights; however, for someone who is new to facing difficult enemies in the campaign, the thrill of the chase can become stale. Colonel Bishop has a variable fleet of aircraft at his disposal such as the French Rafale M. “Squall,” the cutting edge American F-35B Lightning II and the acute Swedish JAS-39C Gripen “Griffin.” On heavy ordinance air-to-ground missions, the player flies as or alongside Major Janice Rehl, raining thunder from a B-2 Spirit or spitting brimstone as the gunner on an AC-130 Gunship. As Captain Doug Robinson, the player enters the role of close air support commandeering a fearsome AH-64 Apache Longbow attack helicopter making for brutal urban air-to-air and air-to-ground battles. The visual aspect of Assault Horizon is nearly infallible. The aircraft, characters, explosions and landscapes look surreal. Even the infrastructure and geographic variables of major metropolitan battlegrounds such as Miami, Moscow and Dubai look superb. Assault combat also has its fair share of bogeys. At times, the controls become awkward and difficult; therefore, an Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 joystick would be the optimal choice. The online multiplayer is outrageously difficult and frustrating to new recruits of the series. Single player is very entertaining but still pretty challenging even in “Rookie” mode, which is the easiest setting. The game offers moderate replay value. — Nick Durcholz *The E.S.R.B. has rated this game “T” for Teen due to Alcohol Reference, Blood, Language, Mild Suggestive Themes and Violence.*
Get to Know Your Evansville Icemen! Nick Schneider Defense
Defensive player Nick Schneider is in his third CHL season and his second with the Evansville IceMen. Favorite thing to do in Evansville? I enjoy going out to the golf courses with some of the guys or going to the movies. Coolest pro-hockey experience? I was playing in Muskegon Robin Bouchard was going for a record for most goals scored in minor pro hockey, and to witness that—and I got an assist—that was kind of cool. He put in so many years, and for him to get a record was pretty cool. Unreal to be a part of. Me and Todd Robinson both had assists. Sports teams? I’m actually a pretty big Minnesota Twins fan, and then actually, growing up, I was a Toronto Mapleleafs fan.

BELL’S THIRD COAST BEER
BECK’S DARK (Bremen, Germany)
(Comstock, MI)
GOOSE ISLAND HONKER’S ALE (Chicago, IL)
Todd Zachritz – 2.0 This cloudy golden ale pours with some sediment, but the crisp lagery aroma is appealing enough. Taste is full, hinting at grains (barley, wheat), and there’s just enough of a hop bite to make this a formidable entry in the session ale category. Quite good.
This dark ruby lager pours with a thick head of off-white carbonation. Lace is pleasant if unremarkable. Aroma is sweet and malty, and it tastes much like a regular Beck’s -- slightly skunky, but with a roasted burnt malt taste. Not very interesting or worthy, and not one I’d recommend.
Jabez Martinez – 4.0
Jabez Martinez – 2.0
Todd Zachritz - 4.0
When I poured this beer it reminded me of one of my favorite Bell’s beer -- Winter White. The cloudy yellow appearance is similar, but this has a bitter flavor to it. The grain and yeast flavors are a little more prevalent, but it’s pretty good.
Jaqulyn Woolsey – 3.0 As it poured, this beer had no head whatsoever. It’s super thin and light, and doesn’t have much flavor. It seems that most of the taste comes from the smell of the beer. I’d say this beer is drinkable, and forgettable.

This was labeled a dark beer but it reminded me more of a Coke when I poured it. I am not a big Beck’s fan, and this did not sway my stance. It was very dry, with little flavor and not much to it. The carbonation was ok, but I’d consider this and average to poor beer.
Jaqulyn Woolsey – 2.0 I’m definitely weirded out by the dark green-bottle beer. It’s very dark on pour almost like a cola, and I picked up on the skunky notes right away. I don’t mind skunky beers from time to time, and enjoy the occasional Stella, but the dark malts in this beer are just not for me.
Todd Zachritz - 4.0 This clean and attractive amber ale is a nicely toasty English-style bitter, with a well-integrated and balanced aroma of mellow malts and lively hops. The taste is a clean marriage of roasted malts and citrusy hops. Always a pleasure.
Jabez Martinez – 4.0 Honker’s Ale is a hazy coppercolored beer. It had that English hop smell, and was a little bitter, but with that English nutty flavor. I have yet to try a bad Goose Island product and this one didn’t disappoint.
Jaqulyn Woolsey – 3.5 I like that this beer doesn’t punch you in the face with hops. It’s bitter but not too bitter; it drinks smooth with a bit of an aftertaste. It’s not overpowering and I like that about it ... it’s definitely a good winter beer!
FOUNDERS BREAKFAST STOUT (Grand Rapids, MI)
well. Absolutely a sublime taste experience, and a deliciously worldclass beer.
Jabez Martinez – 4.0 I could smell the coffee aroma in this beer the minute I poured it. It is a dark, almost black beer. I would consider this a light imperial stout. I could detect some chocolate flavors, but the coffee flavor overpowered it. I really enjoyed this one.
Jaqulyn Woolsey – 2.0 Todd Zachritz - 5.0 This acclaimed and exquisite brew dares to combine coffee, chocolate, and oatmeal into a sleek, pitch-black stout. The aroma is very coffee-like, and the flavors echo that, with some heavy-duty chocolate presence as
This beer poured a very dark almost burgundy color. It’s very heavy on the coffee with a tiny hint of oatmeal, and also very chocolaty. I’m guessing the oatmeal is meant to be more of a filler. I don’t typically enjoy dark beers, but can see how this one would earn high marks if you like this style of beer.

“Leaving Manhattan” Winning Manhattan Recipe from Joanne Spiegel of Mercury Bar West
A
soon to be released new expression of Woodford Reserve and a winning Manhattan recipe made with the original Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select. How much Woodford can you handle in one article? That’s what we thought, please read on and drink on... First, BourbonBlog.com recently attended the final event of the Woodford Reserve Manhattan Experience in at Dream Hotel Downtown in Manhattan. The competitors for this Manhattan Experience finale event were bartenders and mixologists who won semi-finals competition in their respective cities across the country including Louisville, Denver, Chicago, Charleston and several others. Mixologist from New York Joann Spiegel was the winner and was awarded with “Master of the Manhattan” with her “Leaving Manhattan” recipe. Originally from Ireland, Joann moved to New York in 1998. We’re including Joann’s winning recipe is below and you can view all the winning recipes from each city on BourbonBlog.com Now to quench your thirst for a new Bourbon... Woodford Reserve just told us they will introduce their first permanent line extension with Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. In March 2012, this new Woodford Reserve Bourbon – which twice barreled in White Oak -will be released after two unique barrels have been used to craft every bottle of Double Oaked. The new Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is matured to perfection in handcrafted barrels created at Woodford Reserve’s own cooperage. The barrels are uniquely toasted and charred to create the rich flavor and color characteristics that are so distinctive in Double Oaked. “Maturation in a new, charred oak barrel provides Woodford Reserve with all of its natural color and a great deal of its award-winning flavor. This Double Oaked expression has been uniquely matured in two separate, custom crafted barrels,” Chris Morris, master distiller for Woodford Reserve tells us.
• 2 oz. Woodford Reserve Bourbon® • 1/2 oz. Punt e Mes Italian vermouth® • 1/4 oz. Lapsang Tea Syrup*® • 1/4 oz. Dark Creme de Cocoa ® • 2 dashes Orange Bitters Instructions: • Combine ingredients over ice in shaker and stir. • Strain into martini glass and garnish with dark chocolate stick with orange spiral. *Lapsang Tea Syrup – Use Lapsang tea bags and brew a strong cup of tea. Use the tea to make a simple syrup with equal parts tea and sugar.
The Two Barrels Explained: The first Woodford Reserve barrel is crafted from oak that has seasoned out of doors for nine months and this is completely toasted and charred on the inside the second barrel has been toasted for more than twice as long as the first fill barrel and is then very lightly charred. The second barrel: The secret to the Double Oaked character is in this barrel. The “hot stove” is starting to cool down
T
he “hot stove” is starting to cool down as the temperatures start to heat up. Well, in some regions of the country, that is. Specifically, in Florida and Arizona as baseball fans start shrugging off the winter hibernation and focusing on Spring Training. Pitchers and catchers are slated to report for assignments as early as February 18th with full-team workouts stating a week later. There isn’t much of any slow-down in the bevy of activity as teams open up their checkbooks and ink key free-agents to long-term deals. In January, the Washington Nationals took a giant step forward in solidifying their 2012 rotation with the acquisition of Gio Gonzalez. The Phillies bolstered the backend of their bullpen by picking up righthander Kyle The biggest free-agent (both literally Kendrick, and figuratively) fish left in the pond who will is still Prince Fielder. no doubt operate in a set-up role for new closer Jonathan Papelbon. Be on the lookout for the Phillies reestablishing themselves as the National League team to beat as they inquire into the services of veteran pitcher Joel Pinerio. However, the biggest free-agent (both literally and figuratively) fish left in the pond is still Prince Fielder. The Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners

continue to be the front-runners for the former Brewers’ colossus. In recent weeks, rumors are circulating that the Washington Nationals are courting Fielder. The “Nats” have made some other high-dollar moves which may dissipate their chances of landing the slugger, but they are willing to spend the money. However, don’t count out big bankrolling teams like the Miami (formerly Florida) Marlins and the Chicago Cubs. It would be a stretch for new Cubs General Manager Theo Epstein to open up the coffers for Fielder as they seem to be cost-cutting and trimming the fat of bad contacts. The Cubs have dumped their former pitching ace, Carlos Zambrano, to the Miami Marlins and have announced that they intend on giving the number one role to youngster Matt Garza or veteran Ryan Dempster. With the number of acquisitions of younger players, it appears Epstein is building his team for the future. This has elicited some mixed reviews from the fans of the NorthSiders, however, Epstein believes in building his franchise’s future around a core group of youngsters. The St. Louis Cardinals, on the other hand, have been extraordinarily silent in their off-season moves. The World Series Champions have been quietly re-signing players and adding only a few position needs. The biggest move for the Cards has been acquiring Carlos Beltran to bolster the outfield positions, pitcher J.C. Romero in the bullpen and Rafael Furcal in the middle-infield. — Joel Easton

Uniquely American with the EPO
T
he Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra’s season continues in February with the “Salute to Heroes” on Saturday, February 4th and Sunday, February 5th and the “Viva Violin!” concert on Saturday, February 18th. Both shows will be at the Victory, with Saturday night performances at 7 p.m. and Sunday afternoon performances at 2 p.m. “Salute to Heroes” is a musical tribute to our armed forces. Executive director of the Philharmonic, Glenn Roberts, says the show was one of the first things the orchestra planned as it decided on programs for the 2011-2012 season, which is called “Celebrate the American Spirit”.
Air Force Band of Flight
“This season, we’re celebrating music which is uniquely American (rock ‘n roll, Broadway, movie music), and patriotic music fits the bill perfectly. The program includes marches, the ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic’ and ‘God Bless America’, and many more favorites. Without the sacrifice and dedication made by our men and women in uniform, we would not enjoy the blessings of living in a free country full of opportunity, and for that we are grateful and dedicate this concert to these heroes (and heroines),” says Roberts. The program will also feature the ‘Air Force Band of Flight’, which Roberts says will “add a jazzy twist to the evening.” “Viva Violin!” will feature talented violinist Elmar Oliveira. Roberts says, “Elmar Oliveira is simply one of the finest solo violinists in the world. He is in such high demand that we were fortunate to be able to book him to play with us, and he will perform Samuel Barber’s ‘Violin Concerto’, which is one of the most difficult solo violin works in the repertoire. But have no fear; Elmar’s command of this piece is sublime. In fact, he received a Grammy nomination for his recording of this concerto with Leonard Slatkin and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra.” The show will have many other special features. For example, Roberts says, “The concert will also feature the spectacular Evansville Philharmonic Chorus, and we’re honored to have USAF Major R. Michael Mench narrate a work titled, ‘I Am the American Flag’, by American composer James Beckel. We expect that people will leave the Victory Theatre with their chests bursting with pride to be an America.” Even though he’s playing songs and symphonies from around the world, Oliveira is also a perfect representation of the American spirit: as Roberts says, “Elmar is also the only American violinist to nab the gold medal at Moscow’s Tchaikovsky International Competition.” — Katie Darby-Mullins Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309 • February 2012

soundboard Manic Bloom
A group of serious musicians—but not so serious that they can’t have fun with each other—Manic Bloom is a combination of its influences. Driven by melody and a desire for meaningful lyrics, Manic Bloom is comprised of Jeff Brinkley (drums), Jeff Hildebrand (keys), Matt Lawrence (guitar), Andy Neale (bass), and Henderson native David Stevenson (vocals). How would you describe Manic Bloom’s sound? How do you achieve that sound? We use the term “Epic Melodic Rock.” We all have extremely different influences, and we each have an equal hand in shaping our songs. I grew up listening to pretty much just country and gospel because that’s really the only thing that was played in my house, and started listening to rock in Junior High. It blew me away and connected with me on a much different level, and it didn’t hurt that it made my parents a little crazy. Andy listened to a lot of groove-based heavy rock, Matt and Brink listened to a lot of punk and Hildee listened mainly to pop. When we write, usually one person will bring an idea, and everyone else kind of destroys it. From there it’s a blank canvas that we all start creating together. What song do you enjoy playing most and why? That’s a really hard question because it really depends on the night and the crowd. Currently, I think my favorite to play is “Toynbee” because it kind of has everything in it— a slightly calm verse, a soaring chorus, and a lot of epic jams in between where I get to just dance around like I’m out of my mind. The crowd has way more power than they realize, though. If the audience freaks out about a song, we’re going to feel that, and that energy is going to come out in the song.
just to go camping or grill out or something every once in a while, otherwise we could get steeped in the ‘business’ of the music. When we have fights about songs or disagree about something, we’re fairly quick to apologize and take responsibility for mistakes. It’s probably not very rock and roll to talk about brotherly love, but I love these guys and they love me. You know, in a really tough, manly way. What is the best part of being on tour? We mostly just play regional shows on weekends, with the occasional trip to Texas or New York or something if we have great opportunities. The best part about being on the road is that we’re getting to connect with fans, play music, and just hang out with each other…sometimes it’s nice to just have conversations with your best friends, even if it is because you’re trying to keep each other awake at 5am so that you can get back to work on time! — Katie Mullins-Darby
What is your favorite thing that has come with being in Manic Bloom? Overall, I’d say that the best thing about being in Manic Bloom is the brotherhood. We’re there for each other, and we’re cheering each other on. We have to be pretty intentional about it—we try to get all of us and our wives together Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309 • February 2012

The Woman In Black CBS Films
Daniel Radcliffe stars as young lawyer Arthur Kipps, who leaves his disabled son Edward in London to settle the affairs of a recently-deceased woman, Alice Drablow. Her village seems paralyzed in fear: a series of unfortunate accidents and subsequent suicides forces families to barricade their children and themselves inside their own houses. The cause of the terror is the ghost of a scorned woman who was unable to save her own son and is back with a vengeance as The Woman in Black. Arthur must find a way to put the ghost at rest because until he does, every time her form is seen, a child will die.
Safe House Universal Pictures Directed by Daniel Espinosa and starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, Safe House is the story of a young CIA agent (Ryan Reynolds) who is charged with looking after—and monitoring— a former CIA-operative-turned-fugitive (Denzel Washington) in a safe house. Nothing is truly safe, though, and the South African safe house is attacked by mercenaries. The agents must begin to work together if they’ve got a chance of discovering who wants them dead—and if they want to make it out of South Africa alive.

Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance Sony Pictures If you loved the first Ghost Rider movie, then no doubt you’ve been waiting for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance in which Nicolas Cage reprises his role as Jonny Blaze. Blaze’s alter ego, the super hero Ghost Rider, is a flaming skull on a motorcycle. Johnny Whitworth stars as the antagonist Roarke Carrigan (also known as Blackout) who begins the movie as a human being, but is turned into Blackout by the Devil (Ciaran Hinds).
The Secret World Of Arrietty Walt Disney Pictures Starring Bridgit Mendler as Arrietty, a tiny, spirited 14-year-old girl and Will Arnett and Amy Poehler as her suburbanite parents, The Secret World of Arrietty tells how they exist in their garden home—which is not only tiny, but is unknown, even to the homeowner and her housekeeper (played by Carol Burnett). When a 12-year-old boy named Shawn (David Henrie) comes to stay in the home, he discovers Arrietty and a secret friendship blossoms. It must remain a secret, though, for Arrietty and her family to be safe. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
“A reasonably muscular popcorn film with a surprisingly tender soul.”
20th Century Fox
This prequel to the original 1968 story, set in contemporary San Francisco 2009, explores the pitfalls of tampering with Mother Nature through genetic engineering. In this dystopian tale, the apes become so evolved, they want to take over. The film hearkens back to the social and racial subtexts of the original, showcasing the big-screen thrills of an apocalyptic war story between man and beast while examining the big questions of classic science fiction. James Franco plays the scientist caught in the middle, and for the first time in the history of the franchise, the apes are all CGI.
— Nick Schager, Lessons of Darkness
The Review: Though the bad guys in the film often come off as caricatures of villainy – like South Park versions of evil military men – overall, the film effectively portrays humanity’s capacity for cruelty, greed and hypocrisy. In comparison, the apes seem justified in their violent uprising. Moreover, the film is visually stunning, and Caesar, the chemically-altered, super-intelligent leader of the apes, exudes as much warmth and empathy as his human counterparts. CGI has never been so well-balanced with the essential substance of good story-telling.
Apollo 18
The Weinstein Company Directed by Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego and written by Brian Miller, Apollo 18 begins with the premise that in 1973, a year after the last official manned mission to the moon, the US Department of Defense funded Apollo 18, a covert mission to return to the moon once again. What we see here, we’re told, is actual, never-before-seen footage from that mission, recently released on the internet. What this footage captures reveals why we’ve never gone back to the moon.
“It’s 80 minutes of dead air.”
— David Edelstein, New York Magazine

The Review: Have you ever wondered what Blair Witch would have looked like if filmed on the moon? Me either. It’s a promising-enough premise, but the film goes nowhere. No time is spent on character development, so we’re never given a reason to care what happens to these lifeless astronauts, and the found-footage device should never be used as an excuse for loose story-telling and boring dialogue. I’ve seen more entertaining home movies than this, and at least I cared about the people involved in them. Apollo 18 cost $5 million to make, and boy, can you tell.
“If you liked the first movie, you’re liable to like the second one; it’s the same film.” — John J. Puccio, Movie Metropolis
The Hangover Part II Warner Brothers
The wolf-pack is at again in this follow-up to the hugely successful original. This time around, the setting is Thailand, where Stu (Ed Helms) is getting married. Still in shock from his and his buddies’ ordeal in Las Vegas, Stu plans a simple, quiet brunch, instead of a wild bachelor party. But of course, things go awry, and the gang wakes the next morning with no memory of the previous night. What’s worse is Teddy (Mason Lee) is missing. Now, the group must retrace their steps through the streets of Bangkok, to find Teddy and get back in time for Stu’s wedding. The Review: Much like the original, The Hangover II is a strange hybrid, employing more suspense and intrigue than other films of its genre. At times, its darkness can be off-putting, sometimes more film noir than comedy, and some of the bizarre situations the characters find themselves in are just not funny (though Galifianakis is always hilarious). I mean, is it really that funny when a classical cellist loses his finger? Often, the film seems more interested in exploring the darker side of humanity than it does in getting laughs, and maybe that is the point. What if, for one night, all your inhibitions were thrown to the wind? Would you recognize yourself? — Brian Ricketts Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309 • February 2012

vansville has a number of unique venues that have become national draws. Two Austin, Texas bands, Kole Hansen & The Significant Others and The Sweetness, will be coming to Evansville in late February. Kole Hansen will play Saturday, February 25th at the Deerhead and Thursday, March 1st at Lamasco, and The Sweetness will play February 27th at Lamasco, February 28th at Mojo’s Boneyard, and February 29 th at the Deerhead. Aaron Mauck, a bartender at Mojo’s Boneyard, says Aly Tadros (of The Sweetness) made Evansville a must-stop spot on her tours a few years ago. “They love Evansville so much that they always take a break here and spend four days to work three nights, where most cities they visit for one night, before hitting the road for their next show in a different city,” he says. Music comes naturally for Kole Hansen; she has been performing since a very young age with her family. “Music was in my veins before my voice was,” she says. “Thanks to an incredible songwriter, my dad, I picked up a pen pretty young.” Songwriting isn’t the only kind of writing Hansen does, though: she’s been a motivational speaker, and she recently released a book that tells her life story, Someone Save Me, My Story, My Struggle. As if there weren’t enough on her plate, she’s also getting into TV: “Aside from the band, I have been asked to join Nfocus Entertainment on their new show ‘Hit Music Central USA’, to air on NBC. We start filming next month and air in April. I am excited to be handling the content development for the social media channels for this awesome new music show,” says Hansen. Between her upbeat attitude and reflective nature, Hansen is sure to create an intimate concert experience at the Deerhead and Lamasco. The Sweetness is an Austin- and Toronto-based collective featuring Texas-based Aly Tadros (guitar, vocals, vihuela) and Douglas Jay Boyd (cajon, vocals) and Toronto-based Chloe Charles (guitar, vocals), and Sam McLellan (double bass, vocals), The Sweetness was formed between showcases at the Folk Alliance festival in Memphis.

The Sweetness
“As soon as we started rehearsing, we started to work out four-part harmonies, and the sound… it just sort of exploded. Before we knew it, people were packing up our showcase, but they didn’t know if we were a band or solo project. That’s how The Sweetness got started,” says Tadros. Though this tour is the last one with the band in its current incarnation, The Sweetness has a lot to look forward to in 2012. “This is going to be the first year that one of my projects has been selected as an official project at Folk Alliance, which is very competitive,” says Tadros. Their project has come full-circle. The one thing both acts have in common is their love for Evansville. “Everyone is so friendly and so welcoming,” says Tadros. “There are a couple of places that feel like going home; Evansville is one of those cities. We’ve got a lot of good friends there,” she says. — Katie Darby-Mullins See the Band Spotlight on page 67 for more information on The Sweetness.

Dead Milkmen
“The Unheard Music” DVD 5 stars
Originally released 25 years ago, this well-deserved reissue is a classic documentary of the legendary L.A. punk band X, recorded during their prime, and featuring the participation of all members of the band, most notably both John Doe and Exene Cervenka. Interspersing live footage with interviews, behind-the-scenes images, and stock footage to illustrate the times, “The Unheard Music” examines a band at it’s peak, and at odds with the music industry. Major record company executives are, entertainingly, also interviewed expressing their confusion at X and their supposed “lack of commercial appeal”, while forgotten glam rock bands are mentioned as “the next big thing”. Just hilarious! But best of all are the candid and honest conversations with Doe, Cervenka, Billy Zoom, and D.J. Bonebrake. There’s plenty of prime live footage, as well, illustrating how very unusual and innovative X really were in melding their Americana/country-tinged rock with rockabilly and punk. This movie often gets cited by those “in the know” as one of the great rock documentaries out there, and after seeing it, I’m not doubting the validity of that claim. Bravo! — Todd Zachritz
“The King In Yellow” CD 3 stars
It’s been a long 16 years since the last Dead Milkmen album, and this comeback proves a worthy addition to this Philadelphia folk/punk band’s considerable back catalog. Having been college radio staples back in the late 80s, these guys held an important part of my adolescence. Having grown up with stuff like “Big Lizard In My Backyard”, “Eat Your Paisley”, and of course, “Punk Rock Girl”, the Dead Milkmen’s slackerly everyman delivery and fun-loving, cynical attitude immediately hooked me. They had some commercial success before splitting up in 1995, and with the unexpected death of member Dave Blood, it’s refreshing to hear these guys regrouping for more upbeat but deadpan songs like “She’s Affected” (where a hipster girl “dresses like Johnny Marr”), or “Meaningless Upbeat Happy Song”, which needs no explanation. Any old fan will not be disappointed, as “The King In Yellow” picks up right where the band left off. Cool. — Todd Zachritz

Haken
“Visions” CD Sensory/The Laser’s Edge
4 stars
Kid Yellow “Time Before Time” Album self-released
It may be a brief 7-song, 20-minute album, but Evansville-born songwriter Louie Stumpf’s charming indie-pop songs resonate with warmth and a keen attention to mood and texture. The title track is my favorite, with some cool shoegazey elements (I am reminded a wee bit of Sigur Ros), but other cuts, like “Time Travelers”, also drift away nicely.
Abigail Williams
“Becoming” Album Candlelight Records
With their third album, veteran American metal act Abigail Williams bring symphonic elements to their otherwise primal black metal attack. “Ascension Sickness” is a masterful work of transcendent darkness, with scathing metallic lashings tempered by some well-developed melodies and strings amongst the blastbeats and demonic howls.
Morkobot “Morbo” CD
Supernatural Cat
Featuring solely 2 bass guitars and drums, this Italian act’s raw sonic melee is surprisingly heavy and intricate. With hints of grimy noise, punk, and prog-style math rock, Morkobot’s weird tunings and thick, pulsing riffs and rumbling rhythms are both frenetic and tense, reminding me somehow of an instrumental Jesus Lizard meets the Melvins. — Todd Zachritz

English progressive metal outfit Haken’s second album is a huge and dramatic effort, packed with 71 minutes of well-done atmospheric and melodic metal. The opener, the piano-and-stringsladen instrumental “Premonition”, brings a sense of fantasy to the table before erupting into a complex metal behemoth with weird jazz and pop juxtapositions. It’s a promising and beguiling opening. “Nocturnal Conspiracy” follows, and showcases vocalist Russ Jennings’ rich vocals alongside a strong sonic palette that incorporates, again, classic metal with complex arrangements and an almost jazzy sense of jam and space. The remaining tracks follow in this pattern, taking the listener on a surreal and theatrical journey. With high production values and top-tier musicianship, Haken’s “Visions” are clear and engrossing. Fine work. — Todd Zachritz
song-based. Opening with the instrumental electronic moods of “La Naissance”, these boys ratchet up the energy on the single-worthy “Never Back Down”. Fans of stuff like 30 Seconds To Mars, Kill Hannah, or Muse (especially on the proggy “Toynbee”) will likely find something to enjoy in Manic Bloom, as the band’s sparkling melodies and cohesive, wellproduced sound is both deep and still radio-friendly. “In Loving Memory” boasts of several potential hit songs, and given the right backing, I’d expect to hear these guys again quite soon. — Todd Zachritz

Manic Bloom
“In Loving Memory” CD Brinklebrand Records
3.5 stars
Nashville act Manic Bloom’s second release is an 8-song set of melodic rock tunes that punch with an edge, yet manage to stay clean, ear-friendly, and
The fourth album from this Bay Area duo is an absolutely massive and vicious juggernaut of pummeling aggression. “Invernal” hits hard from the start, with the opener, “Avalanche”, being an apt description. The next 7 cuts don’t falter from there, either. With
thick-as-molasses guitars and thunderous drums, Black Cobra singlehandedly crush most metal bands underfoot. Tracks like “The Crimson Blade” just seethe with tension, with as much lowend as the Melvins and as much speed as Slayer. Black Cobra just smoke, no doubt about it. — Todd Zachritz

“A Live Coal Under The Ashes” CD
4 Stars
Kasey Anderson & The Honkies
Originally released as a limited vinyl LP/CD package back in 1992, “A Live Coal Under The Ashes” shows this now-defunct UK experimental group at their best. The title track (in 2 parts) melds an ominous drone with low-intoned chants, seeming much like the ritual sounds from some long-lost tribe or a late-night mystical gathering. “The Fingers Of My Foot” is another effective simple tribal/ritual trance piece. “An End Marked By Pessimism” is 9 minutes of cinematic ambience using natural sounds, tribal drums, drones, and gray washes of electronics to great effect. The final two minutes include a declarative bit of spoken poetry atop the percussive drones, reminding me of mid-period Test Department, even. A superlative album for fans of mystical postindustrial ambience. — Todd Zachritz
he digital revolution has been both good and bad for music: Good because new artists have more opportunities than ever to share their music with fans, bad because there is so much music out there that it’s hard to sift through it all to find what you really like. So, I’ll make this simple: Kasey Anderson & The Honkies are, quite simply, one of the tightest studio bands out there right now, and if you like classic rock and country—from the Rolling Stones to Steve Earle—you’re doing yourself a disservice by not knowing Kasey’s music. The band reads like a who’s-who of the Northwestern music scene: Anchored by Anderson’s thoughtful-yet-edgy lyrics and guitarist Andrew McKeag’s (Presidents of the United States of America) musical acrobatics, the group swings back and forth between rattling with the attitude of a runaway train and the vulnerability of youth. The band also features bassist Eric Corson (also of The Long Winters, another band I’d recommend) and drummer Mike Musburger (The Posies). All of them are ludicrously talented. But don’t let the “Northwestern” part of the band description throw you off: this is straight alt-country, blues, and in places (especially songs like “Mercy” off of Heart of a Dog), it’s rock ‘n roll, not the pastoral folk music people have come to associate with the region. In fact, if I had to name one record I spent time air-guitaring to in 2011, I’d have to say Heart of a Dog wins hands-down. I also had the fortune of seeing them live at SXSW. They manage to capture the same restlessness that comes across on their record without sacrificing the sound. While I have several favorites per record (and I’m dying for the June release of their next record, currently titled Let The Bloody Moon Rise), the song I’d recommend starting with is the piano-driven “Exit Ghost”. An elegiac song about falling into—and then facing—addiction, Kasey writes, “Did you pick up the habit? Heard you did/Hey kid, imagine my surprise/Nobody told you you’d be worried like this, a balled-up fist, hoping everything would be OK”—a stunningly vivid (yet empathetic) portrayal. He knows how to write gut-punch lyrics, and while it’s evident throughout his music, this song is the perfect example. — Katie Darby-Mullins

ZAC BROWN BAND What a night it was December 28th when the band rolled into the Ford Center for a stellar performance. Taking the stage around 9 p.m. to a nearly-packed house, popular songs such as “Chicken Fried”, “Toes” brought the crowd to their feet as they cheered under a magnificent light show. The show’s openers Sonja Leigh and Nic Cowan also delighted the crowd.
