The countdown is on!

Rocket Man is Set to Land in Evansville Elton John and his band are coming to the Ford Arena March 20 and they’re bringing nearly four decades of epic hit songs with them. Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in 1947, the English performer has been playing piano since age 4. He joined his first band, Bluesology, in 1961. Back then, he spent most of his time working—playing with the band, performing solo at a local hotel and even running errands for a London publishing house. By 1965 Bluesology was performing across the U.S. In 1966, the group became Long John Baldry’s supporting band and toured cabarets throughout England. Eventually, John became frustrated with Baldry’s control of the band and began to search for a new group to join. He failed auditions with King Crimson and Gentle Giant. At about this time he crafted his new stage moniker by combining the first name of Bluesology saxophonist Elton Dean with that of John Baldry. He then replied to an advertisement for Liberty Records and was introduced to Bernie Taupin in 1967. Pop and rock history would never be the same. The pair would go on to collaborate on songs for most of John’s career. They took off with lightning speed, writing entire new songs in under two hours. By 1970 they had honed their craft and Elton John’s selftitled breakthrough album was released. The hit “Your Song” introduced him to an international stage. The two continued their hyper-fast writing and recording pace and proceeded to release 14 albums in six years, including “Elton John,” “Tumbleweed Connection,” “Madman Across The Water,” “Honky Chateau,” “Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only The Piano Player,” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” “Caribou” and “Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy.” The last on the list, “Captain Fantastic,” was the first album ever to enter the Billboard Chart at number one. John rode waves of success throughout the ’70, ’80 and ’90s. He beat addictions to cocaine and alcohol. He was knighted as Sir Elton John by Queen Elizabeth II in 1996. Then, his heartbreaking 1997 tribute song to Princess Diana, “Candle in the Wind,” became the biggest selling single of all time. In the words of Elton John, “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fightin’.” But Tuesday, March 20 at 8 p.m. is when you can come and see all the hits live. “Rocket Man,” “Bennie and the Jets,” “The Bitch is Back,” “i Guess That’s Why They call it the Blues,” “Tiny Dancer,” “The One,” “Candle in the Wind,” “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” and “I’m Still Standing” are just a few. If history is any indication (it’s been more than a decade since his last visit to Evansville), “I think it’s gonna be a long long time” before Evansville will get another chance like this. — Jae Mills *Editor’s Note: As of press time, there was still limited seating available. Tickets start at $40 and are available at the Ford Center box office, Ticketmaster outlets and Ticketmaster.com

TALENT-PACKED CHARITY SHOW PROMISES BIG FUN

E

vansville is full of talent, and many great entertainers—both regional and local— have signed on to be a part of Winstead’s Charity Show, which is in its eighth year. The show features all professional acts and has a roster that includes bands like the 50’s and 60’s tribute band The Van Dells, Gina Moore, the heavy rock band Downfall, country act Joe Greulich & The Southern Flyers, Sinatra tribute artist John Paul Josey, the classic rock band the Tunestones, and the comedy troupe the Rolling Thunder Dance Troupe. The show will take place on Saturday, March 10th at 6:30 p.m. and will cost $10 a ticket in advance and $15 at the door. Founder Scott Winstead says that the show has raised money to do some pretty remarkable things in the Evansville area. For example, last year, Winstead’s Charity Show paid for the Traveling Vietnam Wall to come to Evansville. What didn’t go to that went to Lucas Place to help furnish rooms for the homeless. This year, the cause is homeless veterans: “We’re taking our show and donating the money 50/50 with Rolling Thunder, a local vet support group, and the other 50% will go to the Vanderburgh County Veteran’s Council… This year, we’re hoping to build one of the Habitat houses or feed the homeless down at the Veteran’s center on Weinbach. We take the money and do really great things with it.” Because of the big name acts they’ve brought in, Winstead’s Charity Show gets bigger each year—in fact, it’s been consistently doubling. “Tickets are cheap, $10 a person,” says Winstead. And because they’re focused on the night being entertaining on every front, there will also be food and a cash bar available. Winstead’s Charity Show has mostly been advertised by word-of-mouth, which is why it seems like a well-kept secret to many of those in the know in Evansville. “We started eight years ago with a hundred people and we’ve grown into a show that will sell 2400 tickets…It just keeps growing and getting bigger,” says Winstead. And it’s not just ticket sales that keep multiplying: while there’s always room for more sponsors (and in fact, it’s not too late to sponsor the show!), he finds more and more community support every year. “We hang banners up across the stage and balcony with our sponsors on them,” says Winstead. “It’s good advertising.” Winstead actually came up with the idea of the charity show because he also has a talent: he’s an Elvis impersonator. While he won’t be performing in the show this year, that doesn’t mean it will be Winstead-free: his son is in the rock band Downfall. Anyone who has ever seen the Van Dells knows that they are booked as headliners because they provide a fun set for the entire family. They have tight harmonies, costume changes, and set characters, and have been called the “Three Stooges set to music.” By providing an evening of fun and food, and all for the affordable price of $10 a ticket, Winstead has ensured that his charity show will make giving a fun, easy thing to do. — Katie Darby-Mullins

They are the kings of the musical ether, guiding the listener through many an aural and psychological landscape. They are the stuff of dreams and nightmares. They are Pink Floyd and they are defunct.

To mimic Pink Floyd’s catalog may seem an unforgivable transgression to some, but the Annerin Production group has marshaled a band with over 120 years of combined musical experience to resurrect Floyd’s eclectic essence. The Pink Floyd Experience is far more than a mere cover band. Their virtuoso musicianship allows them to inhabit the soul of Pink Floyd, shining like six crazy diamonds. Tom Quinn is on vocals and lead guitar, and Gus Beaudoin plays bass, with Zachary Throne on vocals and guitar, John Cox on keyboards, Bob Sale on drums, and Jesse Malloy on saxophone. According to the official Pink Floyd Experience website, the band and Annerin Productions wanted to avoid an over-thetop big budget approach to the delivery of the music. The tour strays away from massive arenas and targets small unpretentious venues, especially theatres. Rather than producing a full on emotional blitzkrieg, the goal is to construct an immersive environment, allowing the listeners to explore every pitch and tone, finding themselves or getting lost in the music. News 4U was granted the opportunity to speak with the man at the helm of the Pink Floyd Experience, who gave us an idea of how he sails the strange waters of Pink Floyd’s symphonic seas. What follows is a special glimpse into the band’s history and the mind of vocalist and lead guitarist Tom Quinn. News4U (N4U): how did The pink Floyd experience come to be? Tom Quinn (TQ): It all started as a regionally based thing in San Diego that I started back in 1994, and it grew very organically. You hire your friends and they’re not good enough; you go through three drummers, five keyboard players, and six singers. It evolved; it didn’t come together all at once. Jesse, the sax player, was introduced to me through a friend of a friend at San Diego State University. He is the eighth saxophonist we’ve had. The bass player has been with me through many projects – 16 years I’ve been with him. So he has the longest tenure of anyone in the band besides me. John Cox the drummer I also found through a friend of a friend in progressive music circles. He was into electronic

music. I gave him a shot and he accepted the challenge, joining the band in 2004. It didn’t come together with this group of guys overnight. There was a lot of hard knocks and playing for free but you just have to keep driving the idea home. This is what I love to do. It’s Pink Floyd. N4U: Do you sing in the band as well, or do you just play guitar? TQ: I sing about 20% of the stuff. I’m not the main Roger Waters guy. Zach Throne is the singer. He is brand new with us. He has worked with us for several months and has really come into his own. He has a dad in show business, he auditioned for the part of Bones on Star Trek and got the part but he didn’t want it, he wanted the part of Spock. (Laughs)

He comes from a long line of actors. He is a rockin’ powerful front man so he has to tone it down a little bit to do a Pink Floyd Show but he has a lot of firepower. I’ve worked with a lot of guitarist/singers and he is the first one I have given solos to. I gave him three right of the bat; I thought “this guy has too much talent just to tuck it under a rug.” I’m thrilled to have him and he has taken the band to another level. N4U: Of all bands to cover, why Pink Floyd? TQ: David Gilmour. Pure and simple for me, when I started playing guitar, I was a senior in high school. That year I got my first guitar right after Dark Side of the Moon came out in 1973. He was my mentor from day one. There were other people like Joe Walsh and Lesley West and people like that but David was the guy. I loved his tones, his phrasing, and his mastery of psychedelic blues. I always thought “What would David do?” in this song, or this part. He was also the lens through which I viewed Pink Floyd. I got excited about Pink Floyd because of his guitar playing. People get excited about Pink Floyd for many different reasons: the themes, the lyrics about death, war, and insanity. Alienation, and all the pressures of growing up. Pink Floyd spoke to generations. But again, David is my guy. N4U: is there another member of the band that you particularly admire(d) or just Gilmour? TQ: I think in terms of creating the magic with the music, instrumentally speaking would be the interaction between Richard Wright and David Gilmour. Those guys made that thing happen. They tried to get a lot of young session guys back in the late 80’s when they tried to resuscitate Pink Floyd minus Roger and those guys just get the sense of space and drama. That’s why they had ‘Echoes’ planned early on the Delicate Sound of Thunder tour, but they didn’t do it because all these young guys wanted to play too many notes. For me, the simplicity was at the core, but it took all of them playing sparsely and their sense of drama. David made you want to listen, Roger made you think, and the magic happened despite their world-class battles of will in the studio. N4U: How do you go about covering such a complex and epic song as “echoes”? TQ: I love that song because it is so essential to what makes Pink Floyd. We have a nine-minute version of a 24-minute epic. You just have to break it down, figure out what makes it work. It’s not just notes on a page – it’s mastering the tones and the phrasing of all the instruments. Also, getting the pace or speed right. For a musical excursion that truly spans the generation gap check out The Pink Floyd Experience. Don’t be afraid to have your pudding if you haven’t eaten your meat! — Nick Durcholz The Pink Floyd Experience will be performing in Evansville on March 14th at the Aiken Theatre inside of The Centre downtown. The mind bending is set to begin at 9:30 pm and tickets are currently available at all Ticketmaster outlets, online, or at the Centre Box Office. abriel Iglesias’s larger-than-life brand of comedy will be coming to Evansville’s Aiken Theatre at the Centre on the evening of March 25th with his Stand-Up Revolution tour. Named after his television show, this tour features several comedians from the Comedy Central specials, and will culminate with a stand-up performance by Iglesias—though, as he promises, it will be material you haven’t heard yet. “When I go out, I don’t do the same material from the TV show. I flip it up, it’s a brand new show,” says Iglesias. His shows have been through several names and titles, but the subject matter and honesty that made him so popular have remained the same throughout. Iglesias explains with a laugh, “Now we have an actual name that goes around like the show! Before, we had the Fluffy Shop tour…before that, it was just “Gabriel’s on tour with his friends!” “I love getting as personal as possible,” says Iglesias, “That’s how people know that you’re real. So I tell those stories about things that have happened to me. I relate to people by talking about things that are very common, like my relationships at home, my relationship with my son, how things are always going with my family members, problems with raising a teenager, the issues of going back and forth on the road—hanging out with friends who sometimes aren’t the most positive or ideal friends. My stories are very relatable to people because I make them very personal.” His personal style and relationship with his fans allow Iglesias to remain confident and excited about performing—even when he has to scramble

for a laugh. “I’m not worried about them not laughing, which I think helps to sell the material. Because if the people don’t laugh, I just make fun of the fact that it wasn’t funny, and that gets a laugh automatically. That’s my parachute right there. Sometimes I go 100 miles an hour, so if I didn’t get a laugh, no big deal, here comes another one! That’s why I’m so comfortable onstage. The people are there because they’ve seen the show so many times, so my rep gives me a little leeway. So sometimes they’ll give me a, ‘That wasn’t as good, but… ok, hahaha’,” he says. His relaxed style and his nickname—“Fluffy”—make people at a Gabriel Iglesias show feel like they know him. After the Fluffy specials, he began to feel some ownership of the word: it’s gone from a joke in a standup special to an endearing nickname. “The nickname Fluffy came about and I really started pushing that. It turned to the point where if you Google “Fluffy,” I’m the number one pick. It’s a cute nickname. It’s not like I’m taking on a totally different persona, but it’s a nickname in the show,” he says. He’s got several other trademarks that make it really obvious you’re watching a Gabriel Iglesias show—“You want to be recognizable, that’s the main thing, you want people not to forget you. Early on I made it a plan to wear the big Hawaiian shirts and just be silly,” he says. Though he was careful to manufacture an instantly recognizable image, Iglesias appeals his fanbase by being himself. Part of the appeal is the instantaneousness of his comedy: “I don’t write traditionally, where I sit and brainstorm and put stuff on paper. I’m really bad about stuff like that. I’ve never put any of my material on paper,” he says, “I like to go onstage and riff, try to talk about whatever situation I find myself in, and embellish the moment. I always record the show… whatever worked, I’ll do again and whatever people didn’t laugh at, I won’t do anymore.” As if a season of television for Comedy Central and ceaseless touring weren’t enough, Iglesias is also in a movie, Magic Mike, that will be coming out on June 29th. Featuring Matthew McConaughey and Channing Tatum, the movie tells the story of Tatum’s life as a male stripper in Tampa. Iglesias plays the DJ at the strip club, and he’s very excited about the movie—“It’s going to be the craziest film of the year, there’s a lot of intense scenes… when we had people in the showrooms, they went crazy. So I mean, if that’s the instant reaction right there, it’s going to look amazing on screen.” — Katie Darby-Mullins Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309 • March 2012

First, you start with one back panel and two front panels of fabric in the color of your choice. All three pieces need to be the length you want the cover-up to be (plus an inch on every side; you’ll be hemming the edges, so that will make it a little shorter). The width on the back panel should measure the same as you do elbow-to-elbow; the width of the front panels need to go from the base of your neck to your elbow. Then you will need to put the pieces together. I like to hem and put pieces together at the same time, so I tape down about a half-inch of fabric all the way around. Then I put the decorative sides of the fabric on the inside (so that when I’m done sewing, I can turn the cover-up right side out and the seam will be invisible). Next, you’ll need to sew the tops of the front and back pieces together. Note: You will not need to sew the sides together. Since this Materials: is a cover-up and not a dress, the sides will remain open, • Fabric though they’ll be clenched (Which you can easily with a ribbon pick up at Let’s Sew or rope belt. at 4406 E. Now it’s time to 1 hour - 1 ½ hours sew belt loops onto your beach cover-up. I chose to

diy - how to

With Spring Break coming up, it’s time to start thinking about bathing suit season. However, finding a good beach cover-up is becoming as difficult as finding that perfect bikini. The good news is that it’s very easy to make your own cover-up with only minimal sewing—even if you don’t have a sewing machine.

use wide belt loops (about an inch each) and spaced them three inches apart. On the front panels, that meant I had two belt loops on each side. I didn’t hem them; in fact, I went the opposite direction and intentionally frayed the edges slightly, giving a more casual feel. On the back, however, I wanted to create a gathered look. For this, I used three-inch belt loops and pulled the needle and thread through the belt loops tightly. This gathered both the belt loop itself and the fabric in the back of the cover-up. I did this three times and placed each belt loop three inches apart. At the end, you should have long, sloping shoulders, a cinched waist, and a flowy skirt that’s open on the sides. While the hemming, especially on the neckline, may be easier with a sewing machine, it’s also completely possible to do it by hand. — Katie Darby-Mullins

The Image of Beauty When gift-giving occasions arise, there’s always an internal pressure to make sure that you’ve thought of something original and personal for your significant other. Rowe Studios and Best of You Boudoir gives women a way to give a meaningful gift—all while feeling good about themselves.

Adrienne Rowe, of both studios, helps define ‘boudoir’ images: “Boudoir sessions are tasteful photos that hint at sexiness. Every person has their own idea of what sexy is as well as what they are comfortable with. These sessions are cute, fun, sexy, flirty and even a bit sensual all the while maintaining your comfort level.” This means you can be sexy within your own guidelines, which is important to many women. These pictures can be a wonderful gift for many occasions, especially with wedding season coming up. Rowe says, “These sessions are fun for every type of women! They make great gifts for the groom on their wedding day or the Bachelor party day. Depending on the type of women they make great anniversary gifts at any age! The women

that do it say it makes them feel sexy and after the session is over they always say they can’t wait to do this again.” That feeling of sexiness is a gift in and of itself; that confidence helps make every woman feel like a model. Even women who can’t imagine taking sexy pictures can participate in boudoir shoots because of how highly individualized they are. Rowe says, “These shoots are different because of the clothing you wear. Sexy doesn’t have to be nude! We like to gear these sessions towards what the client likes and what the person receiving the gift likes! For example, jeans and a t-shirt tied up just the right way can be sexy to some men just as well as lingerie to others.” That’s one of the best parts about boudoir photos as a gift: you are showing the man you love that you know him and his tastes. Besides personalization through attire, these shoots are personalized through location, as well. “These sessions can get very personal, which is why we keep it as private as we can. Best of You Boudoir is an all-female staff and we have an in-home private studio. I do have some women that think they would be more comfortable if they brought a friend or two, then we rent a hotel suite and make a party out of it. It is up to the client,” says Rowe. Perhaps the best thing about Best of You Boudoir is how inclusive they are—any woman could be a perfect candidate for a Boudoir shoot. “I think these types of sessions have become popular because with these photos you don’t have to have the perfect body. It is all about posing and lighting properly to flatter [the] client the best way I can,” says Rowe. — Katie Darby-Mullins Are you interested in more information on Bourdoir photography? Wellness Through Dance

nytime a person decides to get healthy, one of the most difficult things is incorporating exercise as a lifestyle change. Instead of just going to the gym every once in a while when it’s convenient, if a change is to be permanent, a person has to make it part of their life. That’s part of why Zumba, a Latin-rhythms-based form of dance and cardio, is so successful.

Heidi Garza, owner of Heidi Garza Dance Studios, says the reason Zumba is becoming so popular is, “It’s like a party. You don’t feel the exercise, you feel like you are in the party. You learn different moves, people who’ve never danced before, they can do it too. You can see results in all different kinds of ways. You see results on your body, you see results when you finally get the rhythm and you dance. It’s a really fun class.” Her studio reflects that atmosphere and excitement: the lighting is reminiscent of a disco, and there’s plenty of space to move around. But it’s not just the act of moving around that makes Zumba such a good workout: it’s how many calories you actually burn. Through Zumba, you can burn up to 1,800 calories an hour—which makes a pretty drastic difference in both your body and your endurance levels. Garza herself experienced a major change through Zumba: though she’d been dancing since she was five, and had been a choreographer and professional cheerleader in her native Mexico, when she moved to the Midwest, her lifestyle changed a lot—and not necessarily for the better. “I lost 30 pounds with Zumba in 3 months,” she says. “My life had changed a lot—I came here and my food was totally off, and I started to gain weight. I worked in the gym every day, [but I didn’t] see results. But when I started to teach the class, I lost 30 pounds.” She also began to see changes in her students—“40 pounds, 30 pounds, in very short times. We burn 1800 calories per class, and it is a lot. If you [are] looking for [a] good workout, I can tell you this is really good workout. You start to feel different because your body changes,” she says. Zumba becomes a part of your lifestyle is because it’s fun, and because you see near-instant results. Garza says that one of the reasons she wanted to teach here—and one of the reasons people keep coming back—is the relationships they build through Zumba: “In a couple months, people get confident, and people make friends—people use this also like therapy, they say they change their life in different ways,” says Garza. Zumba is more than just a healthy activity for her; through teaching Zumba, Garza has met people

who, as well as becoming friends, have helped her learn to speak English. Exercise is, of course, an important part of a healthy life. Joining a Zumba class, however, can be more than just cardio. — Katie Darby-Mullins

he Rockin’ River City Ride is a one-of-a-kind event, including a music-filled bike ride, a family safety awareness day offering free helmets to the first 200 kids, and a Battle of the Bands. The whole thing will start on April 21 st at 7:45 a.m. in Sunset Park. Lisa Vaughn, Chair of the Rockin’ River City Ride, says “We’re going to start the day off at Sunset Park with an opening ceremony and ribbon cutting of the Evansville greenway. We’re going to be the first official event to use the entire greenway.” Rides and walks for participants of all levels are available, from a 100K ride to a 5K walk. Vaughn emphasizes that the day will be be fun for the whole family: “There will also be a bike park or a kid’s fun park with bounce house, and Shriner’s clowns ... St. Mary’s will be doing safety presentations throughout the day and we’ll have live entertainment [throughout the ride]. We want everyone to ride, to come out and have a fantastic time. It’s a family event. The 5K isn’t very long, you can put your kids in a stroller and walk it.” The evening ends with an intense Battle of the Bands. Ten dollars gets you entry into the Casino Aztar Events Plaza to watch local band Akacia host a competition where five bands battle for a $10,000 recording contract (sponsored by 77 Recording), an album photography session (sponsored by Alex Morgan photography), and a music video recording session. Though there will be local celebrities judging the competition, they only control 50% of the final decision: 50% of the decision will be controlled by votes coming

from the audience (each ticket purchased counts towards one vote). Vaughn says you can even start participating now: “All the bands are on our website— rockinrivercityride.org – and the public can currently vote for which bands can go onto the finals. We have 14 bands left on the website. People can listen to one of their original songs and vote.” To register for the race, visit rockinrivercityride.org. Celebrate Ireland R

egardless of our ethnic heritage, Americans seem to embrace the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. You may choose to celebrate with the wearing o’ the green or with the drinking o’ the green beer at a local establishment. Two of the largest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the world actually take place right here in the United States in the cities of New York and Chicago. A large number of people in this country do have Irish heritage due to the millions who immigrated here in the late 1800s and early 1900s. While we do have some amazing events taking place here in the U.S., there is no better place to celebrate than in the country that made St. Patrick its patron saint, Ireland.

Dublin, Ireland’s capital is teeming with energy and entertainment on any given day, but on March 17 it explodes with excitement. Much of the activity centers on the annual parade. People arrive several hours prior to its start to stake out a prime location along the parade’s route. Experienced parade attendees arrive equipped with chairs and even step stools for the children or perhaps for themselves to stand on for a better view. Some climb high into the trees, while others perch themselves on top of statues that line the route. As the crowd grows it becomes as big as 15 or 20 people deep. But don’t worry if you fail to secure that coveted curbside vantage point, a large part of the entertainment value is in just observing the people all around you. They come dressed as leprechauns with full attire or wearing wild wigs in green and orange, representing the colors of the flag. Some don hats of all description, bizarre sunglasses or even face paint—the crazier the better. For a small donation to charity a young lad or lass will paint a small shamrock on your cheek, so that you may feel like a local participant; it’s all part of the fun. After the parade, make your way to Temple Bar. This is the area of town most well known for the proliferation of pubs with great food, drink and most noteworthy, live entertainment. These pubs are so popular the crowds will often spill out into the street, but for good reason. The traditional Irish music, or “trad,” scene here is alive and well and a wonderful experience any time of the year. The music usually starts between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. and continues until

the wee hours of the morning. If you choose a pub outside of Temple Bar, you may find an Irish session taking place. A session means that there is not a particular band scheduled to appear, but a rag-tag group of locals who assemble one by one with instruments in tow, ready to entertain pub patrons. It’s very interactive and the crowd is often invited to join in. Although you won’t find any green beer, there will be pints of Guinness galore. So raise your glass and offer a toast to St. Patrick and the luck o’ the Irish you experienced on his special day in Dublin! — Pam Reimann Pam Reimann operates Passport to Adventure and More custom tours and travel planning. Finally, it’s March!

he temperatures that kept people inside during the winter should be fading away, and just as you get ready to shed those heaviest layers of clothes, they remember that the layers underneath need to have some green on them—St. Patrick’s Day, which has become a big night out for many, falls on March 17th this year, and to make sure that you don’t end up pinched—or just missing out on the fun—here are some things you need to be prepared for the holiday.

St. patrick’s Day Beer Liquor Locker

It’s almost impossible to divorce the holiday of St. Patrick’s Day from the green colored beer that pours from the taps of pubs and bars. But if you want a slightly more traditional celebration, or a more home-based one, one way to achieve that is to buy Irish beer from a local place like the Liquor Locker. Beers like Guinness, Smithwick’s, and harp’s are popular this time of year, as well as Boulevard Irish Ale.

Music Joe’s Records And if you want to be festive and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with Irish music accompanying you, Joe’s Records has all of the CDs and Vinyl you could ever need. From punk bands like Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly to more traditional Celtic Sounds, the music always helps set the scene at a party. And if you’re just looking to make sure that the artists you include are Irish, don’t forget rock legends U2 or alt-rock act The Frames. The best part of picking the music for a party is that you get to set the tone—any of these artists would be great accompaniment.

Beads, Decorations, and costumes The Nick Nackery St. Patrick’s Day is becoming a holiday that more and more people are participating in, and the Nick Nackery has everything you need to enjoy the holiday fully. As well as selling costumes—green St. Patrick’s Day Beer Girl and leprechaun both—they have accessories for even the casual St. Patrick’s Day fan, like Mardi Gras beads with St. Patrick’s day colors and decorations. They also have other ways to get your green on and avoid being pinched—with a wide selection of tights, there are several ways to ensure not being pinched.

Snacks & Desserts Donut Bank Of course, you can always get holiday themed cookies and desserts at the Donut Bank Bakery, where they’ll have Shamrock iced cookies again this year! If you’re not a huge beer drinker, this gives you a different way to celebrate the holiday with food and drink.

he Tristate Business Expo is back for its seventh year, and this year, its organizers are even more focused on helping out small business owners and members. Events will open at 10 a.m. in the Centre Ballroom with the presentation of this year’s Small Business Awards, and then at noon., the Expo itself will start in the Exhibit Hall at the Centre. It will feature dozens of booths, additional small business awards, door prizes, and even a presenter who will be talking about accounts receivable. Amy Back, the coordinator of membership and investor relations for the Chamber of Commerce, says, “We’re celebrating small businesses. It’s business to business networking afternoon. We have over 100 booths, mostly for chamber members but also for businesses to make contacts throughout the day with other businesses.” The day will start with recognition for people who are succeeding at small business in the Tristate area. “The small business awards lunch kicks off the Expo—it’s in the same building, and we have it in the ballroom,” says Back. “We’ll give awards for Entrepreneur of the Year, Small Business of the Year, and Non-Profit of the Year. It gives us another chance to recognize our small businesses.” The entry fee is simple: “You have to have a business card to get in,” says Back. She also says anyone who plays any role within a small business is welcome to attend. “I work with people who have 10 employees or less … but if you get up to 50, they’re going to have a comptroller, they’re going to have an HR person, things like that. So really, anyone within a business should come that day.” — Katie Darby-Mullins

ver get bored and think even then the last thing you want to do is read a book? Or maybe you want to read a book but do not want to drive to a book store or library? Do you have a child not doing well in school because of poor reading skills? Well there’s an iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch with an iOS 4 (or later) app to solve those problems. It’s called iBook with over 700,000 books and counting that you can read and most are free. You can read one page at a time, or you can turn your device on its side and view two pages at once. You can even alter the look of most books by changing text size, font, and colors. If you are in school, like I am, you can get a textbook that is nothing like a textbook. Now you’re probably thinking that doesn’t make sense, but it does. These textbooks take advantage of popular iPad features: multi-touch, audio, video, and more. Textbooks in iBook take learning to a whole amazingly new interactive level—and—NO MORE PAPER CUTS! With iBook you have all the tools you need right at your fingertips: highlighter, underlining, and even sticky notes. If you come to a word you don’t know, you can look it up in the built-in dictionary. I use iBook just about every day at school. Before I got iBook I didn’t like to read because there were either words I didn’t know, or the reading was just not interesting; however, since I got iBook I can look up words I don’t know and listen to music while I read my book. I would especially recommend this app to parents who have kids who don’t enjoy reading or aren’t performing well in school. I would recommend it even to people who don’t normally like to spend free time reading. — Dav’Esha Pruitt

health & wellbeing Trying to Quit Smoking?

I

t’s a well-known fact that smoking is one of the hardest habits to break. It’s not just the substance itself—which is, of course, highly addictive— but it’s the rituals and habits that surround it. There are many different tools out there to help smokers quit, like patches, gums, and even some medications, but Totally Vapor offers a new solution—the electronic cigarette. Bodie Bodart of Totally Vapor, which is located in a booth in Eastland Mall, says that smoking e-cigarettes (or vaporizers) offers smokers a less difficult way to quit. “Smokers have two issues: They are addicted to nicotine and have a handto-mouth habit,” he says. “Patches and gum give you the nicotine but not the habit. Chantix works for some but has an associated list of side effects a mile long. As for cold turkey, I tried it hundreds of times and I am simply not as strong as my grandfather’s generation. With a quality electronic cigarette, the smoker receives their nicotine in controlled doses while maintaining their deeply ingrained habits developed over years of talking, driving, reading, relaxing, etc. with a cigarette in their hand.”

Though it can be difficult to find vaporizer systems in brick-and-mortar establishments, that’s the best way to purchase an e-cigarette that you can trust. Along with meeting a person face to face and having accountability that way, Bodart says that the products themselves are more reliable. Reasons to buy in person, says Bodart, are “reliability and immediate convenience. At my store, the smoker can sample each and every type of electronic cigarette and flavor of juice…You know exactly what you are getting with Totally Vapor. Online you can rarely be completely certain what quality of equipment you will be purchasing. As for immediate convenience, when an electronic cigarette user needs a new atomizer, they cannot wait five days to two weeks to receive new equipment. Reliability also refers to the life of your kit past your initial purchase. With Totally Vapor you get on-the-spot maintenance and service throughout your vaping life. Perhaps most importantly, Totally Vapor sells only 100% US made juices mixed by an actual chemist in Albuquerque, NM.” Bodart’s last point is the most convincing; most people who are trying to quit smoking want to rid their bodies of the toxins and carcinogens in cigarettes. Though vaporizers are still a relatively new product, Bodart says that any controversy surrounding them is false. “I am sure that the tobacco lobby will continue to manufacture false claims about how vaporized nicotine is more dangerous than combusted plant matter and the 4000 other chemicals found in their products. I am not worried about them, though. My product does not cause cancer, emphysema or COPD…We are backed by the American Association of Public Health Physicians referenced by their letters to the FDA and the AMA,” he says. If for no other reason than the immediacy, however, vaporizers are an intriguing tool in a quitter’s arsenal: if there’s any chance that an e-cigarette could help wean you off nicotine, you should stop by Totally Vapor and personalize your own quitting system. — Katie Darby-Mullins Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309 • March 2012

Keep it Fresh, Keep it Local

ocal eating had been widely embraced as people become more conscious about how food is grown and processed and what effect that has on the environment. Learning about your local farms in one step towards supporting local food systems. In that spirit, we present the following profile of Stonewall Farm, a family-run farm on the Vanderburgh County/ Posey County line. Keith Cannon, who manages the farm and is a “jack-of-all-trades,” says that there are several benefits to eating locally, (i.e eating meat and produce that is grown in your community): “Eating local has many different facets, but one of the things is the traceability of the food, knowing where your food comes from.

You hear a lot about salmonella and E. coli breakouts in food distributed through a variety of networks, so traceability is important to keep our food system safe.

There’s an integrity aspect— it’s healthy and clean. You hear a lot of about salmonella and e-coli breakouts and things like that from food coming in from outside sources that no one knows where it’s coming from… so traceability is important to everyone. There’s the idea of keeping your money in the community so you’re supporting your local economy. There’s also the quality of the food. Something that you can buy local is much fresher than things being shipped in from different parts of the country,” says Cannon. The food at Stonewall Farm is fresh and carefully tended—they offer “the very best all-natural grass fed meats, poultry, eggs, and other fine quality and artisan foods.” By knowing where your food came from and

how it was cared for before you prepare it, you can ensure that it’s cleaner and healthier than most produce you buy in a grocery store. It’s easy to join in and start buying locally, according to Cannon—there are several different ways to purchase food from their farm. “We have sales outlets through several mechanisms,” says Cannon. “We do direct sales to the public off the farm, and we sell, during the season, at the Farmer’s Market. People can call up the farm and come out and we sell directly that way.” In addition to buying directly from the farm or from stores that distribute Stonewall Farm’s goods, membersupported buying clubs are another option: “We sell into some of the local stores around, health food stores, and the primary way that we’re selling right now is through CSA—Community Supported Agricultures. It’s like subscription farming. You pay up front at the beginning of a 6-month period for a predetermined amount of meat that comes off our farms. We have a monthly delivery of 10-20 pounds of mixed meat, pork,

chicken, some of our beef—and with that, there’s a once a month delivery. Or there’s a poultry CSA where you just get chicken, eggs, and a Thanksgiving turkey during that part of the season. It’s been around since the ‘80s in the USA, but it helps the farmer know what to grow, because the market’s already there. And we don’t have a lot of capital investment to keep a lot of inventory in stock, but we know what to grow based on the number of people who subscribe,” says Cannon. Stonewall Farm delivers all the way out to Newburgh and Henderson—if you’re interested in joining the CSA or learning more about shopping locally, visit www.stonewall-farms.com. — Katie Darby-Mullins

Sushiyaki

S

ushiyaki buffet opened last September in the former Mayflower Buffet location on First Avenue. It offers a medium-sized hot buffet of Chinese and American dishes, a sushi buffet and hibachi. There is also a menu offering sushi and sashimi entrees, salads and Chinese dishes. Although we popped in on a slow Sunday evening, the items were uniformly fresh and good. I especially liked the Ma La Chicken, a dish of lightly crispy bits of chicken and button mushrooms in a light, spicy-tangy sauce. The Black Pepper Chicken and Shrimp was also spicy and lightly sauced, with a good sharp hit of black pepper. The lo mein noodles had been fried until crisp on the edges and nicely seasoned, and neither they nor the Thin Rice Noodle Mai Fun were in the slightest way greasy. Other items on hand were egg rolls, chicken

skewers, stuffed mushrooms, General Tsao’s chicken, hot and sour soup and all the other “usual suspects.” There were also a number of American entrees such as barbecued ribs, fried fish and broccoli with cheese. The variety of sushi was very good, including California rolls, octopus, raw salmon, stuffed tofu pouches and a deep-fried tempura roll. All were tasty and kept cool. I appreciated the stack of bowls for mixing soy sauce and wasabi. The hibachi works like a Mongolian barbecue—you fill a plate with raw food and pass it to the cook, who cooks it for you with your choice of sauce. The vegetable choices were limited—cabbage, onion, zucchini, broccoli and mushrooms. You could also choose raw eggs, noodles, beef, chicken or shrimp. The veggies were fresh and crisp, and I was impressed with the pile of thin-sliced rib-eye steaks. I chose one along with vegetables and a sweetspicy Mongolian sauce. Despite the picture on the front of Sushiyaki’s menu, which shows a wall of flames rising from the hibachi, the surface was definitely on the cool side. The cook flipped my poor little steak over and over and chopped holes in it and squashed it with his spatula as it turned slowly gray, then finally browned a little. I fidgeted and looked away as I witnessed this steak abuse. Maybe this is how beef is supposed to be cooked on a hibachi, but it was contrary to everything I know about cooking steak, which is hot and fast to sear, never press, and never, ever cut into the meat. The finished steak was tender and had decent flavor, but it was cooked all the way through and might as well have been fajita meat. Rib-eye should taste like ... steak. It’s too expensive and has too much potential to treat it like tenderized top round. The dessert bar offered the traditional Jell-O, fruit and cookies. There were also eight flavors of hard handdipped ice cream, which was a unique touch. Altogether I found it a good buffet with tasty dishes, very nice sushi for the price and obvious attention paid to freshness and ingredient quality. I just wish they had kept a corner of the griddle hot for those cute little steaks. — Aimee Blume Sushiyaki buffet is located at 4800 North First Avenue Hours: Monday - Thursday 10:30 a.m. - 9:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10:30 a.m. - 10 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. Take out available. Raul Sanchez

W

hen Ri Ra Executive Chef Raul Sanchez started working at the Irish pub, he was already highly skilled in the culinary field. Still, Irish food was something he’d never experienced. “It was a big change,” he said. “I knew some things about American food, but about Irish food I was blind. I started from scratch, learning everything.” Sanchez grew up in the state of Morelos, close to Mexico City. “I’ve been cooking since I was 10 years old, learning recipes from Mom,” he said. “I lived in an area where you still have farms, and if you make chicken for dinner, you get it alive that morning.” When it came time to choose a career, Sanchez decided to go to culinary school in Mexico. “You learn everything in culinary school,” he said. “It’s a threeyear program to learn the basics. They teach you how to prep meat and fish, how to cut steaks, all the cooking, table service and bartending. If you want to specialize in a certain area, you have to go for another three years.” The service style learned in Mexican culinary schools is classic continental, explained Sanchez. “For example, when you make a Caesar salad, you don’t blend the dressing,” he said. “You learn to do it in front of the table.” Sanchez has been in Evansville since 2005. “My whole family has been here for 13 or 14 years,” he said, “I worked at some other restaurants before I came to Rí Rá - Red Lobster and Oak Meadow Country Club. I started here when they opened. I was a line cook, then worked up to a supervisor, before becoming Executive Chef. “Everything here at Rí Rá is made from scratch,” he said. “When I started here, I became interested in the way the

We get beef brisket and cure and brine it in house for the corned beef and cabbage.” “When he was a line cook he was so quiet,” said Rí Rá General Manager Nicole Schmitt. “It’s amazing to see him now. He takes so much pride in his work. We rely on him for pretty much all of our catering. Now, we can do nights where we have two or three events, and I can concentrate on coordinating and setting up and working the front of the house.” As always, Rí Rá is planning a big party for St. Patrick’s Day, with a limited menu of traditional dishes and a few specials you won’t find at other times. “We’re going to have potato leek soup,” said Sanchez, “shepherd’s pie, sausage rolls, bangers and mash, and bacon and cabbage. Bacon and cabbage is the traditional form of corned beef and cabbage. In Ireland, they make it with pork butt. It’s brined and then cooked just like the beef brisket.” Sanchez noted cheerfully that his birthday falls on March 17, St. Patrick’s Day.

vansville will celebrate her 200th anniversary on March 27, 2012. The city kicked off the celebration through a series of events which began on December 18, 2011 and will culminate on July 4, 2012. Students at EVSC’s Technical Institute school interviewed a few citizens around the city about the changes they have seen during their lifetimes.

harold Morgan Harold Morgan, a local historical non-fiction author, has been writing since just around the time of 9-11. His most recent publication, a 300-page pictorial coffee table book entitled Home Town History contains about 700 images from the 19 th and 20 th centuries, many of which depict places right here in Evansville. Mr. Morgan states, “To see a table reader published by yourself gives you so much excitement you almost feel like applauding yourself.” Over the next 20 years, he looks forward to seeing how technology changes coffee table books. Will you go to someone’s house and see a Nook or Kindle on their coffee, or will there still be a beautiful book full of images and articles meant to catch the eye? — Mary Wright

News 4U is proud to include students from the EVSC’s Technical Institute as contributors.

Established in 1854 as Evansville High School, Central High School is the oldest free public high school in continuous operation west of the Allegheny Mountains. In 1970, Central moved from downtown, where the old Central gym is now the YMCA, to its current location on First Avenue. With the move, EVSC expanded its Career and Technical Education department, which began with North High School’s Mechanic Arts. Today, EVSC boasts the Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center (SICTC), serving Vanderburgh, Gibson, Warrick, and Spencer counties. Barbara Bennett, the current director of SICTC, has seen educational emphases come and go during her 44 years as an educator, but when she asks teachers why they teach, she expects them to respond, “Because I like teaching kids.” That one concept has to remain the same throughout all the changes time may bring. — Mckenzie Vanderkooy • www.News4UOnline.com

Deputy Chief of Police Joyce Molinet and Lt. David Molinet Over the past 200 years, Evansville has become a stable place for people to live, work, and raise a family. The Evansville Police Department (EPD) has been the backbone that keeps us safely moving forward. Joyce Molinet, the third female Deputy Chief of Police in Evansville’s history, and her husband, David, Lieutenant in the Patrol Division, are two of those who have dedicated their lives and careers to the people of Evansville. Many changes have occurred since the beginning of the EPD in 1863 when two men were hired to check on downtown buildings after dark. The EPD now has 288 sworn officers and 31 civilian employees. Deputy Chief Molinet says that one of the goals of the department is to continue to develop our own local Law Enforcement Academy, “We used to have to send officers to Plainfield for their training so having our own academy is a huge advantage [for] local law enforcement.” — Jamison White

hal Wolford

hal Wolford In 1958, Hal Wolford was hired as the first news reporter for WFIE, which was then an acronym for “We’re First In Evansville.” In his 32 years as a reporter, Hal Wolford has seen both the station and also the news change. Hal sadly claimed, “Not as much of my type of work is being done nowadays. I took a camera person and reported from the highways and byways here locally.” The evolution of technology has changed the way people get their information news, which has meant a move away from local TV stations and newspapers to the Internet. Mr. Wolford hopes local TV stations and newspapers are still surviving twenty years from now. There really is something special about having your paper personally delivered to your house. — Mary Wright

After recently being named 50/50 Central / CHL Rookie of the Month in February, goaltender Bryan Gillis is having a ridiculously good first-year season. His stats are impressive: he’s been in the goal for ten of the victories this season, and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. What is your favorite thing about playing for the Evansville IceMen? So far it’s been the fan support. It’s been overwhelming. Favorite place to get a drink in town? KC’s for a drink. What do you do in your off-season? I use the opportunity to train and be with my family and friends. Favorite movie? Probably Dumb & Dumber What is your favorite sports team franchise to follow? Boston Bruins

ometimes called the “Sonny & Cher” of country, Burns & Poe—made up of Nasvhille musicians Keith Burns (formerly of Trick Pony) and Michelle Poe—have already started building a fan base here in Evansville. “You have to get on the road and build yourself a following,” says Burns, “But it’s all worth it when it’s all said and done. It’s what we’re doing in Evansville…we got on TV there, we went to the radio station, and the last time we were there, we sold out so fast there were tables for the VIPs.” That atmosphere will pay off on Friday, March 23rd and Saturday, March 24th, when Burns and Poe come back to Casino Aztar. Part of the reason their stage show is so unforgettable is that they have rapport not just with audiences, but with each other— they trade jokes and jabs throughout a set. “It’s just the way we go back and forth onstage. Our show— we banter back and forth— we cut each other down like brother and sister…we’ve got comedy—one liner jabs—in the act, and we like to bring everybody into our living room, so to speak. So it’s a lot of fun,” says Burns, adding with a laugh, “And hopefully we get hecklers, because I like to put them in their place, too. I love it when somebody yells out something from the crowd. It’s good to come out with—I’ve got a microphone this can go on… I can bury you underneath the table, if that’s what you really want.” Burns & Poe’s songs seem to be about two things: capturing a moment and making it memorable, and the music. While their jokes and attitudes may be fun-loving, they take their music very seriously. “We take our music very seriously, but not ourselves, and hopefully that’s going to catch on. It seems like every performance that we do, every city with a new audience that we play and perform for, it seems to be catching on little by little,” says Burns. A Burns & Poe audience can expect their country to be played loud: while they revert back to a more classic style of songwriting and performing, Burns & Poe are talented musicians who have incorporated some newer styles into their work. “We’re old school country with a modern sound. We’ve got old duet stuff like Kenny and Dolly, Conway and Loretta… so, we incorporate some of that into our show. We’re more of a traditional country, like an ‘80s type of country act, as far as musically, and as far as our sound, you keep up with whatever’s going on, but we like that traditional country sound with a little bit of edge to it,” says Burns. Burns often speaks with a smile, which is most prominent when he talks about what kind of music he and Poe write: “We sing about love and cheatin’ and drinkin and havin’ fun and what have you. But country, cheatin’ and drinkin’ never go out of style.” — Katie Darby-Mullins Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309 • March 2012

Neil Kellen & Lewis D. Chaney An Interview with Filmmakers Neil Kellen and Lewis D. Chaney Neil and Lewis have been in the industry for a long time, but are finally making their way into the forefront by directing and producing highly polished feature films such as REALITY (with Joe Atkinson) and VictimEYES, and their most recent short film ELYSIAN. I had a chance to catch up with producers and directors Neil and Lewis, who formed the motion picture company Keychain Productions. We spent some time talking about their most recent music video, “Nightwatch”, and a documentary to benefit the Evansville Humane Society. Their work first caught my eye a few months ago with the film A Mind Beside Itself, a truly thought provoking, poignant drama. NK: There were a number of films we worked on with other directors, especially over the last two years. A Mind Beside Itself was one of those films. Lewis and I have created a solid bond with P. J. Starks, the director of that short film. He had a very specific vision he wanted in the short, but he left the “look” of the finished movie very much up to us. N4U: First, let’s talk about the two of you as filmmakers. What kind of themes or styles set you apart from other directors? NK: Lewis and I both come from an “old school” style of filmmaking. It’s funny, really, how different we are from the twentysomething-year-old filmmakers in the area. There is nothing wrong with the way they do things, but it shows how much of the art of filmmaking has changed from setting the image standard high, like you see in Hollywood, to making everything more “YouTube” visually. N4U: What inspired you to make a music video? NK: Last fall, we created an experimental short film called ELYSIAN. During the planning process, we met local artist Mina Fedora and decided that we would create a music video called “Nightwatch” in exchange for her scoring our film. I think that may be the best decision we made in 2011. But, as the future unfolds, we will be focusing primarily on completing feature films. N4U: What prompted you to make a documentary film on euthanasia in the Vanderburgh humane society? LC: I spent 26 years working in the television industry, much of that with a video camera in my hands. I have done everything from commercial production, to covering famous entertainers to covering news and of all the stuff I had done, one thing turned out to be the single, most powerful piece and that was a series on this topic. In that series, I shot 4 dogs being put

to death, and it was one of the hardest things I ever had to endure and I shot it on VHS. Then we aired that, and it got to people. To watch a dog die by lethal injection simply due to a lack of space is just gut wrenching. Neil and I know that if we can get this out there, on a much larger scale, people will learn what they can do in their own communities to help. elair 7 is a band that brings together many different influences to create their own unique sound. They consider themselves an “old-school rhythm & blues band with a rock/funk edge,” and with a varied list of favorite artists and performances, it’s not hard to imagine that they’re able to combine those sounds. The band is made up of Jeff Reynolds (trumpet, flugelhorn, and vocals), Shawn Needham (guitar), Shawn Brashear (lead vocals, guitar), Bryce Klueh (bass), and Daryl Nurrenbern (drums). Where did you meet? The Deerhead.

Nations Orchestra. Shawn N.: Any solo by Biréli Lagrène.

How did you form the band? Jeff: I saw Daryl Nurrenbern mowing his grass one afternoon—I had no idea where he lived, just happened by, so I stopped and we talked about forming the band. I had known Daryl from rehearsing with another band. We had another meeting and decided to call the other musicians and start rehearsing a couple of months later. Finding a place to rehearse was a bit of a problem, because no one had enough space to get all the gear as well as the band in, so I called a friend of mine Tim Kempf who had converted an old meat packing facility into a really cool living area complete with trampoline and pool table. This facility was great because it was not only large enough for the band and equipment, but friends could stop by and listen to the group.

What is the most powerful show you’ve ever seen? Jeff: Maynard Ferguson at the Four Torches in Chicago. Shawn N.: Branford Marsalis. Shawn B.: Led Zeppelin. Tell me a little more about Velair 7. [We have] over 40 years of musical experience and musicians spanning from Los Angeles to Boston, with ages ranging from 26 years old to 57. Having such a diverse group of individuals allows the band to perform a wide variety of music, such as rhythm & blues, rock, funk, jazz, and pop. Forming a little over a year

ago the group is still evolving and looks forward to future production of original material. Who are some artists you cover? Tower of Power, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Average White Band, Santana, Boz Scaggs, James Brown, Peter Gabriel, Sam & Dave, Commodores, Black Crowes, Prince, Sting, The Doors, Eagles, and many more. — Katie Darby-Mullins For more information about the group visit as well as future events visit us on our soon-to-be Facebook page. What is your favorite place to play in town? Aztar. Number one, people there are really cool for the style of music we play, and second the stage, lighting, and sound system are great at this venue. What song do you wish you wrote? Jeff: I wish I wrote “Night in Tunisia” by Dizzy Gillespie. Shawn N.: “Giant Steps” by John Coltrane. Shawn B.: “Thriller” by Michael Jackson. What’s one of the most difficult solos you play? Jeff: Arturo Sandoval and the United Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309 • March 2012

aBoUT The BaND: Soundproof is a quartet that has been registered with the Barbershop Harmony Society for 19 years and met singing with the Evansville Chorus chapter of the society. We were the chapter’s section leaders who learned music ahead of the chapter and then sang the song to the chapter for learning purposes. We liked our blend and decided to become a registered quartet. We were the Cardinal District (all of Indiana and Kentucky) Champions in 1997 and are very proud of that accomplishment. We sing for all types of business functions, social events, sporting events, and anywhere people like music. WhaT TheY coVer: We sing old or contemporary music, even rock—any type of music arranged in the barbershop style. Their iNSpiraTioN: We all grew up in musical families. Our parents were our main sources of inspiration, although we do hold high regard for previous members in the Evansville Chapter. Our families and the Chapter got us into barbershop singing about 27 years ago. Doug’s father was a very accomplished musician, having played in some very well known professional shows. We all have music in our blood! Where caN peopLe caTch YoUr perForMaNceS: We are scheduled to sing the National Anthem at the St. Louis Cardinals game vs. the Chicago Cubs in St. Louis on July 21st of this year. Red Hook Nut Brown

Widmer Brothers W’12 Dark Saison (Portland, OR)

Jabez Martinez - 3.5

Jabez Martinez - 4.5

A bright gold colored beer with a hoppy aroma. The flavor was that of a lighter IPA with some citrus characteristics. It also had some spicy flavors and some caramel. I am not a big IPA fan but this would be one to start with.

This beer poured a dark brown color with a touch of orange and had the expected toasted grain and caramel malt aroma. The flavor was mostly sweetly malty but the roasted nut flavor was on the light side, which I really liked. This beer was very easy to drink and the a 5.8% alcohol content was just right.

Jabez Martinez - 3.5

Jaqulyn Woolsey - 4

Jaqulyn Woolsey - 3.5

Jaqulyn Woolsey - 2.5 This beer is very golden on pour. I had high hopes for this one because I typically love canned beer. Turns out it was way too bitter and citrusy for me. I’m not a fan of the aftertaste either. It’s not surprising to me that I wasn’t a fan of this beer as I don’t really like any IPAs. However, I can see how it would be well-liked by the IPA lovers out there.

Todd Zachritz - 3.0 Poured from a pint can, this cloudy amber ale pours with a sizeable off-white head. Detailed but erratic lace. Nose offers citrusy hops, with a hint of sweet malt. Taste is crisp and hoppy, even a mite bitter, with grapefruit tones and a sharp, dry, almost sour finish. Not a big fan.

I actually like this one, even for a dark red-ish brown beer. It has a slightly sweet aftertaste that I find enjoyable. It reminds me of a cola, sort of middle of the road. I don’t mind the carbonation in this one either, a factor that typically makes or breaks a beer for me.

Todd Zachritz - 3.5

Brown ales can be overbearingly sweet, but Redhook gets it right here. It’s a clean amber-brown ale with stylish, detailed lace. Nose is robust, with definite tones of nuts, molasses, and some toffee. The taste is sweet but not overpowering. I consider this an enjoyable and representative brown ale. Well-done!

This beer was similar to the Red Hook in appearance – a dark brown color with a light orange tint. It had a sweet malt and yeast aroma that matched its flavor. None of the flavors really stuck out and all were a little lacking. It was similar to the Redhook but not as good. I can’t say that I’m a fan of this one either. It poured a dark amber color, with a hint of banana maybe. I could almost see treating it as a dessert beer. It’s not offensive in any way, really. I’m just not one for the darker beers.

Todd Zachritz - 4.0 A creative melding of a Belgian saison and a roasty dark ale, this intriguing brew pours a rusty amber with a nice head and superb lace. Nose offers caramel and candied fruit. Promising! Taste is fruity and yeasty, with a hint of roast at the finish. Very much in the saison tradition, but with a tasty and enjoyable twist. I really liked this one.

Two Brothers Brewing The Bitter end (Warrenville, IL)

was dominated by heavy hops and a little citrus. Not a bad beer but I am not a heavy drinker of hoppy beers.

Jaqulyn Woolsey - 3.5 I wanted to like this beer because of the smell, which has a hint of caramel. The aftertaste was not as strong as I expected considering that it is so golden in color. I prefer this kind of Pale Ale over an IPA any day, but don’t see myself seeking out this beer for pleasure.

Todd Zachritz - 3.5

Jabez Martinez - 3.5 A cloudy copper colored beer with decent carbonation. It has a nice floral and citrus aroma with a little spice mixed in. As the name suggests, it had a bitter flavor but

Contrary to the name, this one isn’t too bitter at all. It’s a wellbalanced and easy-to-drink pale ale with a bright citrus hop aroma and a balanced flavor. I got some rather nice lace on the glass, but the bottom line is the taste, and this one’s quite good.

The Business of Bourbon

S

ince I left you last month on this page dedicated to your drinking, season 1 of Moonshiners on Discovery Channel ended. Recently I caught up with reality TV show star Tim Smith in New York to hang out with the “Moonshine” family. Over a BBQ dinner and some Bourbon and moonshine at Blue Smoke, we did a follow up video interview which I invite you to view on BourbonBlog.com. While legally produced moonshine and clear whiskey have seen some strong growth, brown still seems to be where it is happening. “If it’s brown, it will sell,” says Andrew Webber, CEO & Distiller at Corsair Artisan Distillery. The Nashville-based Corsair continues to impress whiskey enthusiasts with unique releases like Quiona Whiskey, Rasputin Hopped Whiskey and Buckwheat Bourbon just to name a few. While Corsair has been increasing production at a rate of three to four-fold annually, Webber says there is still an undersupply to the current demand of all whiskeys. In 2007, as they were starting the Corsair Distillery, Webber and his team found some white papers published by some of the larger Kentucky Bourbon distilleries projecting a “whiskey boom” in 2013 and 2014. The boom has arrived early. Thirty years ago, it didn’t seem that this “Renaissance of Bourbon” would ever come. Four Roses Master Distiller Jim Rutledge has been in the business for 46 years, starting at the old Seagram’s Distillery. Rutledge recalls the era between 1968 and the 1980’s when the Bourbon industry witnessed a serious decline. “We were losing as an industry 3 to 5% a year.” Rutledge says the decline was part due to the economy and consumers opting to go with clear spirits. There was also the perception that all Bourbons were the same. The change for the better started back in 1983 with the release of Blanton’s as the first single barrel Bourbon. By the late 1980’s Jim Beam began releasing the first collection of what would be known as “small batch Bourbons.” This small batch foursome of Knob Creek, Basil Hayden’s, Booker’s and Baker’s have withstood the test of time. It was this premiumisation of the Bourbon category that began to “lift the industry up by its bootstraps” according to Rutledge. By the end of the 1990’s, Bourbon was showing its first growth in the industry in about 30 years. The rise of Bourbon along with other American whiskeys continues to be evident. Recent expansions among Kentucky distillers include a new distillery at Wild Turkey, increased bottling and new warehouses at Maker’s Mark, a new visitor

The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS) tells us that U.S. exports of all spirits rose to a new high, up from $1.22 billion in 2010 to $1.34 billion in 2011. Last year, some $800+ million of that were American whiskeys including both Bourbon and Tennessee. The European Union accounted for 47% of all U.S. exports, of which 88% was American whiskey.

center and increased bottling capacity at Jim Beam. here are currently 4.7 million barrels of Bourbon aging in Kentucky. This is the largest inventory since the 1980’s. This means there are more barrels of Bourbon in Kentucky than people who live in the state itself (4.3 million). The white papers apparently are still showing that all signs point to brown. This is not only the case with the bigger distilleries, but also with the smaller and craft distilleries. Noah’s Mill, Rowan’s Creek, and Willet Estate earned Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, Ltd. of Bardstown great respect on their reputation for producing some of the best whiskeys in Kentucky by using new make and partially aged bourbons from casks procured from other distilleries. As 2012 began, Kentucky Bourbon Distillers started distilling their own spirits to age. Distilleries which might have once looked toward the traditional Bourbon Country region as locations to based themselves are now looking toward Louisville as part of a “Bourbon Sprawl.” Michter’s, which has been produced in

Bulleit Rye, Redemption Rye, WhistlePig Rye and others. Raj Bhakta, CEO/Founder of WhistlePig tells us, “Rye is the most flavorful grain. Think of the bread, it has a more intense flavor profile. The same thing is true in whiskey.” Sometimes the whiskey in the bottle can predict the flavor of the cocktail. This was the case in the 2011 creation of Wild Turkey 81 as Associate Distiller Eddie Russell developed one of the first Bourbons to be “created with mixologists in mind.” High West Distillery of Utah takes it a step further. They bottle a 90 day barrel-aged Manhattan called the 36th Vote Barreled Manhattan, made with vermouth, bitters and High West’s own fine rye whiskey. Bob Owens, President and Founder From Left to Right - J.T., Tim Smith, and BourbonBlog.com’s Tom Fischer of The American Distilling Institute, says that of the 396 craft distilleries identified in Kentucky and traces its roots to Pennsylvania, plans to their database, 250 state they are making a whiskey. open a new distillery in downtown Louisville in 2013. It’s March... Do You Bracket?

C

oca-Cola. The Everlasting Gobstopper. The Philosopher’s Stone. How to make sure you secure a second date. All of these things are secret formulas which have baffled humankind since cavemen took their first stroll outside. Few of the great questions in life baffle the mortal mind like the overwhelming helplessness one feels when their co-worker hands them the NCAA Tournament Bracket for the office pool. Your head immediately aches. You break out into a waterfall of sweat. And despite the fact that you know that you know the assist-to-turnover ratio of the top 25 teams as ranked by the RPI, if someone were to ask where you live, you would stare blankly back. The fun and excitement which is the NCAA basketball tournaments also bring sleepless nights and hours Can Calipari drive his team to of pouring over the most minute another Final Four appearance? statistics trying to figure out how to fill out your bracket(s). There are many formulas people follow when trying to out-smart your friends and family; bound and determined to lord over them with bragging rights for the next few months. Some simply choose the higher seeded teams to advance. Others will carefully play out each match-up in it’s entirety to figure out the champion. Many will simply choose the winners by how nice their uniforms are and how cute the mascot names can be. This year’s tournament projects to be one of the more exciting in recent memory. The top four seeds are pretty much non-debatable at this time. Kentucky and Syracuse are veritable locks as top seeds. The final two may be interchangeable depending on the outcome of conference tournaments. Missouri, Kansas and Michigan State will all vie for the final number one seeds. The important number two seeds are pretty secure with the Big 10 getting two of them with Michigan State and Ohio State and the other two going to the ACC with Duke and North Carolina. The next 59 teams in will all have the same opportunity trying to take down the top eight. As we saw last year, even a play-in team can make it to the Final Four. The elite teams in the country, although beatable, are likely to progress their way to the championship rounds. As we saw in the NFL playoffs with the New York Giants winning the Super Bowl, the teams to rely heavily upon to do well in the tournament are the ones with the most momentum at the end of the season. So choose wisely and you may hold in your noggin the formula to cracking the NCAA bracket puzzle. Rubik’s cubes aren’t so hard now, are they? — Joel Easton Joel’s selections: Final Four: Kentucky, North Carolina, Michigan State, Syracuse. National Champion: Kentucky.

book review The Circle Of Drums The eighth official offering from Project Soul, Soul Caliber V is the latest offering in a series with a significant history of innovative game play, melodramatic plot lines, and enigmatic characters.

The Soul Caliber series was the first fighting game to employ a multi-axis directional scheme, allowing characters in a combat environment to move side-to-side, not just forward and backward. It also changed the fighting genre by instituting a system for combinations that allows players to better control the timing and frequency of combo attacks. Both of these game play dynamics still feature in Soul Caliber V, requiring refined strategy. The variety and complexity of the fighters available in Soul Caliber V is staggering. This is beneficial because it allows players to find characters that really match their style, but it is also frustrating because a player might be effective with only one or two characters. Veteran characters such as Ivy, Astaroth, Voldo, Maxi, and Cervantes, are included, but this release also offers a satisfying injection of rookies to the franchise, including Natsu, a lithe and playful she-ninja, Aeon, a ruthless raptor/humanoid wielding dual battle axes, and Ezio Auditore, the stoic killer of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, to name a few. Two key aspects of the game offer extra value. The character creation mode offers the player an opportunity to not only customize their favorite fighter but also create a character from scratch by picking his or her unique fighting style, body type, garb, and even body art. Secondly, the multiplayer options cater to a variety of styles of interaction when accessing live matches. A player can enter a massive regionally based room and switch between live chat, casual single matches, and tournaments all on one interface. Alternatively, players can choose to enter an exclusive room containing only five other players involved in a win-streak-based spectator scenario. This game has a moderate to high replay value and the spirit swords have never looked so sharp. — Nick Durcholz *The E.S.R.B. has rated this game “T” for Teen due to Mild Language, Suggestive Themes and Violence.

T

he Circle of Drums is the newest book release by Evansville, Indiana author, percussion instructor and musician, Don Blackburn. The Circle of Drums, as the title states, is a crash course for drummers, which explains everything from drum set basics to improvisation techniques. The Circle of Drums covers a basic range of music reading notations as well as a unique conceptual approach to creative thinking that helps to develop soloing techniques and musical phrasing. The book also explains basic rock and jazz patterns and would be a great supplement to private percussion lessons. It is, however, important to note that having an understanding of basic music reading, counting, and drumming concepts would be beneficial in order to fully identify with the teaching concepts contained in The Circle of Drums. The Circle of Drums is a highly recommended publication for the beginning and intermediate drum student. This method book offers a number of ideas for the application of learned skills along with preparation, suggestions and initiatives that can be used in a contemporary band setting. — Greg Tuley Greg Tuley received his Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1980 from the University of Evansville. He is a private percussion instructor, musician, and member of the Vic Firth Education Team.

March 9th John Carter

Walt Disney Pictures

An action-adventure set on an exotic planet, Barsoom, John Carter is based on a novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The screenplay was written by several notable writers, including novelist Michael Chabon. The story follows military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) as he, tired of war, is transported to Barsoom where he is faced with another war: one between the inhabitants of the planet like Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe). In watching this species destroy itself, Carter remembers his own humanity and begins to realize that the survival of the whole planet— including himself—is in his hands.

Silent House Open Road Films Starring Elizabeth Olsen as Sarah, Silent House tells the story of a woman who finds herself trapped—and completely alone—inside her family’s secluded lake house. She has no way to contact the outside world and no way to escape. It doesn’t help that the house itself is becoming creepier and creepier. Directed by Chris Kentis and Laura Lau (Open Water), Silent House is a unique horror film because it is a story told in real time—and filmed in a single, uninterrupted shot.

21 Jump Street Sony Pictures Though the title may be familiar, the action-comedy 21 Jump Street is not a continuation of the old television show. Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) are cops who are more than ready to be men—however, due to their youthful appearance, they’re used by the secret Jump Street unit to go undercover in a local high school. Though they’re investigating a violent and dangerous drug ring, they wind up more terrified of high school—which has become a different place since they were last there. They’re forced to confront their own teenage issues, all while trying to bust up the drug ring.

Mirror, Mirror Relativity Media Mirror, Mirror tells the familiar story of a wicked enchantress (Julia Roberts) who is scrambling for control of an orphan’s (Lily Collins) throne—and of course, for the attention of a charming prince, played by Arnie Hammer. But that orphan is no other than Snow White, and her beauty wins over the prince. The Queen banishes her to the forest and expects that she’ll be gobbled up by a man-eating beast; however, Snow White is rescued by a band of (short) highway robbers, and she grows into a strong young woman ready to fight the Queen for what is rightfully hers. The movie culminates in an epic battle—not quite your Disney Snow White.

Wrath of the Titans Warner Bros. The sequel to Clash of the Titans, Wrath of the Titans takes place a decade after Perseus defeats the monstrous Kraken. Perseus, who is the demigod son of Zeus, is trying to live a normal life as a fisherman and father to his 10-year-old son, Helius. However, the conflict between the gods and the Titans rages on; humans aren’t as devoted to the gods as they once were, and that is causing the gods to lose control of the Titans and their leader, Kronos. Hades and Ares (Zeus’s godly son, played by Edgar Ramirez) decide to switch loyalty and ally with Kronos to capture Zeus and drain his godly powers. As the Titans become stronger, Perseus must realize his destiny and insert himself into the conflict.

The Hunger Games Lionsgate The critically acclaimed suspense series, The Hunger Games stars Jennifer Lawrence as protagonist Katniss. The Capitol of the nation Panem forces each of their twelve districts to send a teenage boy and a teenage girl to compete in an event called the Hunger Games. It’s both a punishment for past uprisings and an intimidation tactic—which is why it’s a nationally televised event. The teenagers must fight until there is only one survivor. When his ex-girlfriend dies and leaves him with an 11-yearold son to care for, Charlie finds himself losing his grip on the remote control of his life. Made with a mixture of CG and real robots, the action in the boxing ring looks very real. The father/ son symbolism of the robots is obvious, but not overdone or campy. Although halfway through the movie the plot becomes a mirror image of Rocky, you find yourself not really caring because the story isn’t just about robots or boxing. Rather, it’s about a man finding reconciliation with his family and learning to care about others more than himself.

In Time

(Drama, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Action/Adventure) 20th Century Fox In a futuristic world parallel to our own, the people of Dayton stop aging at 25. Then, they live forever—that is, if they can earn enough time on their clocks to stay alive. Days and minutes, instead of dollars and cents, are the currency. People trade time on their clocks for everything from hotel rooms to cups of coffee. The rich have thousands of years, but the poor never have more than a few days. Many people can’t make ends meet, and they die. Impoverished and desperate Will Salas (Justin Timberlake), who has never had more than 24 hrs left on his clock, is determined to bring balance to the system. After he falls in love with wealthy heiress Sylvia Weis (Amanda Seyfreid), the two heroes go on a crime spree to make sure no one ever has to die again. Part Bonnie and Clyde, part allegorical smack upside the head, this movie merits the viewer’s hard-earned time, with three-dimentional characters and exciting action. However, it offers no appologies for its heavy-handed message and clunky metaphors. Capitalism is evil and personal wealth is unjust. We get it. Interesting, but not very subtle.

The Double

(Crime, Drama, Mystery) Image Entertainment Retired CIA Operative Paul Shepherdson (Richard Gere) is called out of retirement and matched with much younger FBI Agent Ben Geary (Topher Grace) to catch a former Russian assassin who has come out of hiding. As Geary tries to unravel the mystery, Shepherdson works hard to hide a sinister secret. Built around a very interesting concept and with an unexpected ending, the movie has a few thrills and even a little heart. The character development reaches a plateau about two-thirds of the way in, but the excellent actors keep the viewer engaged. Some of the early dialogue and plot is reused from other generic spy flicks, but the movie redeems itself in the end with two major plot shifts, proving that you should never trust a movie about spies.

The Big Year

(Comedy, Drama, Sports) 20th Century Fox Although there is no prize money to be won, and very little fame among the general public, three men compete for The Big Year, the greatest of all birding competitions. Out of sheer competitive spirit, they struggle to break the record of seeing 732 birds in the span of one year without cheating or destroying their family relationships. Not only is this a story about the dangers of obsession, it’s also a lesson on the value of friends and family. The cast is terrific, with Owen Wilson, Jack Black, and Steve Martin in the lead roles. However, many people will be disapointed by the tame comedic style and the mellow pacing. This quirky movie is not for everyone: it moves between feeling casual, a little unusual, and even slow at times, but it is overall amusing—kind of like watching birds.

Restless

(Drama/Romance) Sony Pictures Classics Enoch Brae (Henry Hopper), an awkward young man who is mourning the death of his parents, attends the funerals of strangers to entertain his obsession with death. He falls in love with Annabel Cotton (Mia Wasikowska), a terminal cancer patient who helps draw him out of his depression and discover the beauty in life. Although this movie sports all the right ingredients—accailmed director Gus Van Sant, beautiful actress Mia Wasikowska, and well-known composer Danny Elfman—it falls flat in entertainment value. Like a dreary version of Napoleon Dynomite, it portrays the sensitive relationship between two social outcasts. However, unlike Napoleon Dynomite, it’s not funny. When it goes for touching and sentimental, it just ends up being tediously slow and, like its protagonists, obsessed with death. — Matthew Shaw Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309 • March 2012

The Twilight Sad

“No One Can Ever Know” CD Fat Cat 2

Being a big fan of these Scottish lads’ previous work, I was shocked to find this new one doing a complete 180 on me. Their third studio album is a marked change, and it’s not necessarily a good one. Whereas their past work was dynamic “sad bastard” rock with

elements of post-rock and shoegaze, this new incarnation adds synthesizers and a glacial New Order/Joy Division vibe. Cool on it’s own, but when it comes at the cost of the band’s proven strengths, it’s downright disappointing. Vocalist James Graham’s thick and distinctive Scottish accent is still present, but the music on “No One Can Ever Know” seems like an entirely different band. “Not Sleeping” seems to drone on, going nowhere in particular. “Another Bed” is shimmery synthpop with a wall of keyboards that drown out the vocals. The single, “Sick”, is the best, reminding me of Radiohead a bit. I’d like to think that this album is a one-off experiment for the boys, as their anthemic rock hooks and emotional connection seem to have been detached here. — Todd Zachritz

ne half of Finnish electro-acoustic deviants Pan Sonic, Vainio has been producing left-field electronica for many years now. This solo release presents his take on affected, processed, and prepared guitar. On the relatively abstract 13-minute opener, “In Silence A Scream Takes A Heart”, Vainio moves from a playful minimalism to overtly threatening tones, with huge, crushing, sustained guitar chords (something akin to Sunn O or Swans, perhaps). The ominous intents are continued, as “Throat” goes for a more blunt no-wave noise angle. “Mining” is a thick, rhythmic attack, with more jagged sounds alongside a primal, mantric beat-box rhythm. The cover of Iggy & The Stooges “Open Up And Bleed” is both cold and sleazy, like a soundtrack to an imaginary urban nightmare. The remaining tracks echo this sentiment, skirting the edges of abstract and soundtrack music, but with all the foreboding menace of a serial killer. Vainio is a world class sound manipulator, and this collection proves that his sources aren’t as important as what he gets out of them. A stunning selection, and not for the faint of heart. — Todd Zachritz Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309 • March 2012

“Demo” CDR Self-released

This local Evansville act’s demo is a brief 5 songs and 16 minutes, but the old-school soul is clearly evident. Covers of “Soul Man”, “Superstitious”, “I Feel Good”, and more are faithful and funky, with Stax-style horns intact. Velair 7 kick out the jams, no question. Just awesome.

Quoth

“Alter Egos” Album self-released

With a name likely taken from an Aphex Twin song, I expected a trippy electronic act, and that’s precisely what Pennsylvania group Quoth are. “Butterfly” is a giant, bass-heavy groove with dub and industrial influences. “Central Control” is glitchy IDM electro. This is instrumental electronica with guts, tailor-made for fans of Aphex Twin, Download, or Orbital. Free download at their bandcamp page: http://quoth. bandcamp.com/album/the-alter-egos

first vocal-based “pop” album after several film soundtracks. It all begins with “Chocolate”, a cinematic bit of storytelling courtesy of frontman Stuart Staples. With similarities to Scott Walker, Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds, or Leonard Cohen, the Tindersticks’ classy, literate music is mellow, mature, and moody, drawing inspiration from European traditions, as well as vintage soul (“Show Me Everything”) and noir soundtracks. For example, “Medicine” is a slyly romantic slice of melancholy, and “Frozen” is like a classic nocturnal spy-thriller in audio form. No, Tindersticks don’t “rock”, but they do possess a great skill at subtlety with sound, and in a tangent rock format. Well-done! — Todd Zachritz

Blast Records

I’d almost forgotten this Irish alternativepunk-grunge band from the 90s, only to learn they’ve never officially retired, only retreat after their years of MTV airplay and rock stardom. “A Brief Crack Of Light” takes listeners back to the band’s earlier sound, all noisy guitars, chunky drums, and Andy Cairns’ distinctive vocals. — Todd Zachritz

icons of today, Al and company channeling the spirits of Hank Sr., Buck Owens, and the like. This isn’t parody, but sincere homage. “Medication Nation” proves that Al can still pen a catchy tune. “Drug Store Truck Drivin’ Man” is a Gram Parsons cover, and is as silly as it sounds. Buck Satan’s songs are hard-luck, tough-living anthems for a generation that has lost touch with it’s country roots. My sole complaint is that the drum programming seems out of place. Nonetheless, a “Bikers Welcome” is a surprisingly fun record. — Todd Zachritz

Al Jourgensen, headmaster for industrial metal kings Ministry, has become a self-parody in recent years, and has all but alienated most of his past co-conspirators. But damned if this new project isn’t the best stuff he’s done in some time. As his long-promised country and western band, Buck Satan is a rollicking good-time joyride, full of songs about drinkin’, fightin’, and general rabble-rousin’. Forget the powder-puff, pretty-boy country

Fresh from their reformation stint as post-rock/drone legends Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Canadian formation Silver Mt. Zion here release a limited doublesingle and their first new tunes in 2 years. . “What We Loved Was Not Enough”, in 2 parts, is a slow and almost mournful folk/ chant reflection. “The State Did Not Agree” is a similar lament, with the wailed, strained vocals of Efrim Menuck. The fourth cut, “Psalms99”, doesn’t divulge much from that formula, either. This one’s for collectors only, it seems. Me? I’m anxiously awaiting that new Godspeed! album. — Todd Zachritz

Crucifuge

“Vestri Animus est Mei” CD self-released 3

This debut from Evansville metal act Crucifuge opens with the propulsive “Souls Of Darkness” and continues with the raging thrash/ death metal of “The Noose” (which is only sullied by a dry production). Musically, the band brings (chiefly) classic thrash elements to the table, with a dual assault of gurgling death vocals and shrill screams. “Insanity Overdose” shows off Jesse Izsak’s more melodic vocal style (reminding me a bit of Burton Bell of Fear Factory). Other tracks showcase elements of power metal, gothic metal, and even grindcore. In fact, these guys change it up so much that I’m left a bit confused as to their true identity. It’s a strong first showing, but Crucifuge aren’t fully there yet. — Todd Zachritz

Runaway Dorothy

T

here are so many good young bands out of Brooklyn right now that it’s easy to overlook the whole scene and assume that, if they’re really good, you’ll eventually hear about the band through some form of media. I hope that this publication plays that role for you, because Runaway Dorothy, an alt-country band from Brooklyn by-way-of North Carolina, has an unmistakably classic sound coupled with fresh lyrics. “Abilene,” off of their debut record, The Arc, which came out a few years ago, was the first song that caught my ear. It’s surprisingly polished for being the product of what was at the time such a recently formed band. Lead singer and songwriter Dave Parnell sings plaintive vocals that wouldn’t be out of place on an alt-rock song, but the sound is warm, deftly interweaving instrumentation and country-inspired lyrics. By the time the instruments fade out for the bridge, the lyrics mirror the listener’s feelings: When summer comes, I’ll feel just the same You’ll pack your bags and quietly retreat again And I’ll be on my own Still trying to make this home Think what you want, I’ll be running ‘til the autumn comes The inevitable loneliness of distance, and the longing that keeps people waiting for love is an easy emotion to tap into, and Parnell does it in a way that’s both painfully familiar and interesting. One thing that stands out about “Abilene” is how upbeat it is for the subject matter; even when Parnell’s words are paired with little more than an acoustic guitar, he manages to write interesting compositions that feel energized. Songs like “Caulfield” are mournful but manage to retain enough of an upbeat quality to drive the listener forward; that quality is reflected throughout The Arc. Even as Parnell laments, “Tomorrow will be the same as today,” the song doesn’t feel repetitive and boring; the band is forward-moving, even when their characters aren’t. Perhaps the coolest thing about Runaway Dorothy is how passionate their fanbase is. Their second record, which has already been recorded and is currently in mastering, was funded in large part by a Kickstarter campaign—fans chipped in money before the record came out to ensure that the band would be able to record a second album. With the new record coming out either late this month or early next month, now is a good time to become a fan: Runaway Dorothy is a band worth knowing. — Katie Darby-Mullins Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309 • March 2012
