Fellow New England platinum rock bands, Staind and Godsmack, two of the hardest-rocking bands in the biz, join forces for a summer co-headlining tour. Opening the show will be hard rock quartet Halestorm. This line-up is a fistful of rock!

taind’s latest release, the self-titled “Staind,” thrives on the group’s signature sound, but it’s marked with a new synergy, making it the band’s most powerful and intense collection of songs to date. The debut single “Not Again” was the fastest rising single of the band’s career. Loudwire declared, “The band has returned to the grittier, bottom-heavy, down-tuned sound that defined its commercial breakthroughs, 1999s ‘Dysfunction’ and 2001s ‘Break the Cycle.’” Staind has had nine Top 10 singles across multiple radio formats, with four of those songs hitting No. 1, including the most played song of the decade, “It’s Been A While.” Godsmack is considered one of the definitive alternative hard rock bands of contemporary music. “The Oracle,” Godsmack’s last album, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, marking the third consecutive album in a row by the band to debut in the top slot. Recharged and refocused, Godsmack members channel their raw and intense sound into their first live album, “Live and Inspired,” set for a mid-spring release.

Acclaimed as one of hard rock’s most explosive acts, Halestorm spawned two Top 10 singles, “I Get Off” and “It’s Not You.” The first single from the album, “Love Bites (So Do I),” is currently No.11 at Active Rock radio and is the fastest-rising single of the band’s career. The follow-up album, “The Strange Case of…,” hit the streets last April. Lzzy Hale is not only the face of Halestorm, but she plays a mean guitar and is an incredible songwriter as well. Revolver magazine nominated her as one of the sexiest woman in rock today. Halestorm has performed alongside such artists as Shinedown, Avenged Sevenfold, Megadeth, Bullet for My Valentine, Papa Roach and Disturbed. Sully Erna, Godsmack’s lead vocalist, Mike Mushock, Staind’s lead guitarist, and Lzzy (Elizabeth) Hale, Halestorm’s front person, recently took time out of their hectic schedule promoting their MassChaos Tour to answer a few of my burning questions. Here’s how it went down.

is consistent, that there was a theme, everything was on 10. And with this new one, we just kind of let it be what it was going to be. And it’s extremely flattering that Revolver said it is the most anticipated or they consider it one of the most anticipated, because the anticipation is killing me, because I want it to be out there now! But definitely the sound on this record is a lot more human than the last record. I decided to be brave on this record and go to all extremes.

Godsmack:

News 4U: The band’s ﬁrst live album, “Live and Inspired,” will be out this spring and will include 13 of your favorite live songs and a bonus disc of four cover tracks. Tell me, what can your fans expect from the live shows on this tour? Sully Erna: I think we just have the mentality of going out for kind of the greatest hits tour, and out of that supporting new music. So, we’re just going to put together a really fun set. Obviously we'll have the drum battle that me and Shannon do and we’re just going to try to put together the best songs we can, the most energetic songs that we can and stuff that we feel is going to be the most interactive for the audience. This is kind of ‘let loose and have fun with it.’

Halestorm:

News 4U: Your second full-length album, “The Strange Case Of…,” is set to drop this coming April. It was named one of Revolver’s Most Anticipated Albums of the Year. How would you describe the sound for the new album? Lzzy Hale: Wow! Well, this new record was a lot of fun to make and it kind of came together – it’s us really not boxing ourselves in. On our last record, we paid so much attention – we were trying really hard to make sure everything

News 4U: After the success of your ﬁrst CD, what aspects of the new release are you most excited about right now?   Lzzy Hale: Everything. I’m so proud of this record. With this record, we had just a better concept of our fans, and a lot of what we did was inspired by them and the feeling that we got during our live shows. Also, the music is bridging the gap between what we do live and what we can do in the studio. This was lost on our last record, so for the people that are geeks about this stuff, we recorded drums to two-inch tape and we hashed out most of the stuff, just the four of us sitting in a room as a band. So, it’s a nice step up from the last record! There’s more energy and also more intimacy. You’re going to be hearing and tasting a lot of different sides of Halestorm on this record. I’m excited about what people are going to think!

Staind:

News 4U: How did the songwriting and recording process for your recent album “Staind” differ from your older material? Mike Mushok: Well, we have a drummer now; that’s one big difference. Look, I think what we tried to do on this record is kind of come back to what Staind of ’99 was. That was really the idea behind it, to get a little more aggressive, and really the reason why we started the band was to play more aggressive music. We went on this journey and I think the last record you lose the progress; really kind of took us as far away from that. And I enjoy the journey. I love some of the songs on the last record, but I think after completing that, we said, “Let’s come back to why we started the band,” and that’s really what the idea was behind the album. News 4U: Since your last studio album you’ve had a lineup change. How did Sal come to join the band? Mike Mushok: Sal has been with the band since ’99 and previous to that he was in bands that we used to play gigs with. So we always knew he was a great drummer and when it came time, it just seemed like the perfect fit. He’s been on the road with us for twelve, thirteen years. He was already part of the family. — Tamatha Lant Staind, Godsmack and Halestorm will be performing in Evansville on May 6th at The Ford Center. Doors open at 5:30pm, music is set to begin at 6:30pm. t is highly recommended that you mark your calendars and make extra preparations for extra guests in May. Hank Williams, Jr. and all of his rowdy friends are coming over. Old Bocephus, as he was affectionately referred to by his late father, the country music legend Hank Williams, is slated to take the Ford Center stage May 11, 2012 along with Jamey Johnson and 38 Special. Williams received his well-known moniker shortly after his birth. The story is told that Hank Williams saw ventriloquist Rod Brasfield at the Grand Ole Opry and bestowed the name of his dummy to his newborn son. Hank Williams would close his concerts by saying, “Don’t worry Bocephus, I’m coming home.”

Just a few short years later, however, Hank Williams passed away at the age of 29 when Williams was just three years old. It didn’t take long for Williams to realize that his life in the country music, and mainstream spotlight, would follow the path his father had started. Williams wrote in his autobiography, Living Proof, “Other kids could play cowboys and indians and imagine they’d grow up to be cowboys. I couldn’t do that. I knew that I would never grow up to be a cowboy or a fireman or the president of the United States. I knew I’d grow up to be a singer. That’s all there ever was, the only option, from the beginning.”

Being raised in Nashville, Tennessee, Williams was surrounded by many of the most influential people in country and rock n’ roll music at that time. Williams learned the banjo from Earl Scruggs and learned piano licks from Jerry Lee Lewis. At the ripe old age of 15, Williams strode across the Grand Ole Opry stage and sang one of his father’s most famous hits, “Lovesick Blues.” Williams career then progressed through many peaks and deep, dark valleys. After an attempted suicide in 1974 and a subsequent mountain-climbing accident Williams’ life and music changed. And it didn’t take long for the rest of the country music world to catch up with his new style and sound. Dancing with Our Stars: Evansville-Style 2012

tars in our local communities and businesses, these men and women have made a name for themselves with their figurative skills of moving and shaking. The question is, how well do those skills translate onto the dance floor? Since 2009, this event has offered light entertainment, a touch of class, and an evening of laughter and fun. Featuring a squad of professional dancers to help local stars bid good riddance to their second left foot, this year promises to deliver more of the same. The audience will be treated to a variety of traditional and contemporary dances. On top of a full dining experience, guests will be treated to sublime waltzes, tangy tangos, fierce foxtrots, and carnal cha-chas. Dancing with Our Stars 2012 will be a fitting showcase for each participant’s personal style. Some may fare better than others, but all have been trained almost to dancing perfection and have worked diligently to reach that goal. In line with the syndicated show on ABC, the audience will take on the role of judging each couple. After the votes have been tallied and the winners crowned, the dance floor will be open for all in attendance to enjoy. This year’s stars include Gina Moore, who recently celebrated three decades of employment at the YMCA and 25 years as part of a singing duo with her sister, Joan, as the Browne Sisters. Other dancers include Jeff Feyen, who was the manager of Packaging Engineering at Bristol Meyers–Squibb before his recent retirement, and Chase Coslett, an Evansville native who works at Toyota, where he uses his higher education in international business and logistics. Another participant is Chuck Byrnes, the Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the Accuride Corporation. Other stars are Stephanie Roland, the Vice President and Community and Reinvestment Manager of Fifth Third Bank, and Claire, HOT 96 night-time talk show host and Evansville native. Also taking to the floor are Julie Stucki, who is the national spokesperson for WomenHeart, a nation-wide coalition for women and heart disease, and Debra Talley, who has served with several nonprofit organizations such as the Evansville Philharmonic Guild, Vanderburgh Medical Alliance, and the Junior League. Of course, the individuals most vital to this night of fun are the professional dancers. These talented individuals are Brandon Lee Sears, Sadia Brimm, Teresa Sheets, David Bell, Scott Bishop, Sarah Nellis, Jaime Reininga, and Mike San Angelo. These fearless hoofers will be turning novices into veterans and those with some experience into hot shots in a matter of weeks. This night of extravagance has another agenda besides a good time. Lets Go Fly A Kite! dIY - HoW to

Create, run, and fly! Kite flying is fun to watch, but it’s more fun to do. You can add creativity and invention to the fun. Of course, you could choose to make any number of characters or creatures to soar through springtime’s blue skies. This one is cool, simple to make, and perfect for flying right before sunset. Don’t be afraid to add eyes or faces—make this project your own by getting creative. These are just the basics to get you started. It’s Bat Kite!

Instructions: Step 1. Draw a bat pattern on a piece of

cardboard. Cut out the shape using scissors. This will be your pattern.

Step 2. Place one yard of black fabric

(polyester or cotton) on a flat service. Place the bat pattern on top of the fabric. Trace around the pattern onto the fabric with white chalk.

Step 3. Cut out the bat pattern from the

fabric with scissors. Cut 3 long strips out of the fabric that is left. You will use these later to make the tails.

Step 4. Fold in the sides of each wing a half inch. Stitch the fold to create a tube. This is where you will anchor the wire frame.

What you need: • Cardboard • Scissors • Wire Cutters • 1 yard of polyester or cotton fabric (black) • White chalk • 1 wire coat hanger • Needle • Thread • String

Step 5. Clip the long bottom edge of the coat hanger with wire cutters. You can sand the edges for safety. Bend the wire into a half-crescent and insert it into the wing tubes. Stitch ears to the top of the wire with small loop shapes made with the thread. Step 6. Stitch the 3 tails that you cut in step 3 onto the

bottom of the bat pattern. Stitch each tail on separately and try not to overlap them.

Step 7. Insert string into the tubes and form a loop with the string. Tie the end of the string to the string line at the bat’s bottom side, at the center. Close the wire-frame loops by sewing the ends. Now, go fly your kite! —Jae Mills Steps compiled from eHow.com

But how do we know unless we look on the inside? We often judge people when we first meet them by the way they look. It has always been said that you cannot judge a book by its cover. So look inside when you first meet people and look for that inner beauty. I don't know about you, but I am going to look for inner beauty in all who I meet. Visit Victoria Falls

ictoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The native tribes called it Mosi-oa-Tunya, The Smoke That Thunders. The first European to view the Falls was Scottish explorer David Livingstone who was introduced to it by local natives in 1855. Livingstone was so impressed by the Falls that he named it after his queen, Victoria. The Victoria Falls can be easily viewed from two different countries, Zimbabwe and Zambia. Zimbabwe has historically been the most popular side from which to view the Falls, but as the turbulent political situation continues to boil more people are opting to visit it from the Zambia side. In Zambia there are well marked paths, which offer spectacular panoramas of the falls from several different vantage points. In November the Falls are at its lowest, and you may get very close to the water. The rains come in late November through early April, so in the springtime the Falls are at its peak. At this time of year, it is best to wear raingear and rubber sandals when walking along the path due to the

heavy spray coming off of the thunderous Falls. It is such a rush to visit at this time, but getting too close could mean getting swept away or at the very least losing visibility due to the spray coming down like heavy rain over you. You must be very careful of your footing and keep your camera in a plastic bag for protection. The Zambezi Sun Hotel is situated in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Wildlife Park just outside the town of Livingstone. Being within the wildlife park creates moments where you experience close encounters with the resident wildlife. Mischievous baboons and Vervet monkeys enjoy trying to take away your food at meal times. Be sure to give a wide berth to the zebras and giraffes as they are wild animals and may be tempted to kick or butt anyone getting too close. There are two activities that are an absolute must for everyone who visits. Sundowner cruises on the Zambezi River give guests an opportunity to sit back and enjoy hors dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;oeuvres and drinks while watching the sunset. The second activity that should not be missed is the elephantback safari. There are several reserves that take in orphaned or injured elephants and rehabilitate them; unfortunately, most are not able to return to the wild. Instead, these animals are acclimated to people and are great fun to ride through the bushes while searching for other wildlife. At the end of the ride you may reward the elephants by feeding them a little snack right from your hand. Other adventurous activities are available such as bungee jumping, horseback riding and helicopter or micro-light flights over the falls. According to the local climbing center Vertical Excape, a climber can shed over 700 calories in one hour. If all the other benefits weren’t impressive enough, rock climbing presents multiple facets of mental fortitude. Confidence is achieved by setting climbing goals, large or small, and then conquering them. Gaining more and more confidence leads to the formation of a healthy self-esteem. The climber’s self-esteem is further integrated by the thrill and adventure of the climb itself. Choosing from the numerous holds (ledges or crevices outdoors) to utilize to reach the peak of the platform or summit sharpens the climber’s problem solving skills as well. This can be made as quick and easy or as lengthy and difficult as the individual climber wants it to be depending on the route of the ascent. As a bonus, the climber may choose to bring a friend or two, which significantly improves the climber’s sense of companionship and their ability to work towards a common goal as a part of a team. Fortunately, there is an all weather facility in our own backyard where patrons can achieve all of these great health and wellness benefits and where they can climb to their heart’s desire. fter-school programs, scout groups, community service activities, religious youth groups, and other community-based activity organizations throughout our area have always provided opportunities for our youth and have long been thought to play a key role in meeting young people’s developmental needs. Double M Stables is one communitybased organization that is well known for their commitment to youth in the local area. Kim Gilkey, owner and program manager, took some time to help me realize what a great resource they are. Double M provides youth as young as 3 years old the opportunity to learn as much as possible about horses; kids start out learning the basic care of a horse, moving on to safety, riding skills, saddling and cleaning the horse stalls. Their services include horse boarding and leasing, trail rides across 200 acres, and educational workshops and day camps for the public and scout groups. They also provide opportunities for youth to lease horses through a 4H Fairground program known as the “Saddle Club,” which allows kids to enter contests and exhibit their horses in horse shows. Double M Stables also lends their facility and services to help educate and encourage youth through a Christian inner-city program called “Dream Center” organized by Brian Turpin. Kim Gilkey believes it is important to ensure that the physical activities she provides are fun and challenging because recreation is the draw for children and parents. She also emphasizes that it is important to encourage experiences that go beyond just learning about horses, helping to develop social skills such as responsibility, self-esteem, confidence, personal accountability, and problem solving, all of which play major roles in the development of leadership qualities. Kim has helped, Rikkie, one of her students, to become the young horsewoman she is today. At age eleven, Rikkie took her first riding lesson on a jumper pony. She later joined Vanderburgh County 4-H Horse and Pony Club and began showing at local fairs and participating in provincial competitions. I asked Rikkie what this activity means to her. She said, “It means a lot to me because it was something I had always wanted to do. It felt like it would be the end of the world if I couldn’t spend time with horses or be around them.” Rikkie says her involvement with horses has improved her quality of life: “It made me a better person, more responsible. Horses don’t judge you, and they don’t care what you look like. They have improved my confidence. “Diets, how do I hate thee? Let me count the ways …”

e see that people are overweight, and all that is being offered to them are … diet schemes? The fact is there isn’t a real focus on actual nutrition in our society. Just look at the myriad of diet commercials on the television. Almost all you see on TV is the

latest fad where you can lose 20 pounds in two weeks, how to get skinny fast, and how to melt away fat like magic -- and there seems to be a pill for everything these days. The main thing that I do not like about weight loss diets is that they are extreme. They teach you to behave and eat in ways that are not natural and that, most importantly, are not sustainable. And when you have a weight loss diet that tells you to do something for a certain period of time you can almost guarantee that when you stop doing that thing you are going to put the weight right back on and resort to your old ways of eating. Take SlimFast, for example. You cannot live your entire life eating a few snack bars and one meal a day! I recently spoke with Bonnie Schnautz, owner of B-Renewed Wellness Solutions.

She is a Certified Natural Health Professional providing one-onone, integrative health coaching solutions to fit your wellness needs. I asked Bonnie, How should a weight loss diet be? She commented that “if you make your diet about health instead of weight loss then you will lose weight and the weight will stay off. And if you do nothing else, start tracking your food intake. The Nagasaki Inn is one of Evansville’s oldest Japanese restaurants, serving customers sushi and hibachi since 1982. Evansville now has many Japanese restaurants, yet Nagasaki continues to win awards year after year. “You know, the best we can do is keep up good connections with the customers,” said General Manager John Shimodiara. “The menu changes and we offer new dishes, and now we are also offering some Korean dishes.” Eating at a hibachi table (more properly called a teppanyaki) is always a thrill at Nagasaki. The teppanyaki chefs perform an elaborate show, tossing and catching eggs on a metal spatula and building a fiery volcano of onion rings – while cooking you a lovely dinner in the process. Most recently, we stopped by for lunch and enjoyed a selection of entrees and sushi rolls. I chose the Tempura Teishoki ($8.75), battered shrimp and vegetables deep fried to crispy perfection. The tempura batter was very light, but it had more texture than some “barely there” tempura batters I’ve had elsewhere. The vegetables included eggplant, sweet potato, onion rings and zucchini, accompanied by a light soy and mirin-based sauce. My friend tried the grilled mackerel, or Yakizanaka Teishioku ($8.50). The moist filet was served crispy skin up with a garnish of lemon. He noted that it had a strong flavor, but that’s the point of mackerel. If you enjoy a milder fish, Nagasaki also offers grilled salmon or pike.

Nagasaki Sushi Each lunch was served in a bento box with accompaniments. The rice was a stickier, shorter-grain variety than found in Chinese restaurants. A small scoop of mustard potato salad had an American flavor. A serving of seaweed salad with delicious sesame dressing rested alongside a garnish of surimi (whitefish “crab” meat), an egg roll and a well of sweet-and-sour pineapple sauce. The salad contained iceberg lettuce, garnished carrot and purple cabbage doused in creamy ginger and sesame dressing. Even though the lunch portions were large and more than we could finish, we couldn’t not have sushi, so we ordered two rolls. Both were well-prepared, served together on a wooden board, garnished with curly kale and a tiny carrot butterfly. The Dynamite roll included diced raw scallop mixed with a little hot red pepper, crunchy tempura batter flakes and minced scallion. The Dragon roll included barbecued eel and cucumber inside the roll, and thinly sliced avocado on top. Usually barbecued eel, or unagi, is my favorite sushi ingredient, but the sweet, soft scallop paired against the crunchy tempura flakes made the Dynamite roll tops this time. Nagasaki also offers more modern sushi ingredients, including deep fried lobster, smoked salmon, kiwi and mango, radish sprouts and fresh oranges. In January, chef James Weflen took on the position of executive chef for all nine dining establishments at Casino Aztar. Weflen, who was born in Rock Falls, Ill., has traveled all over the United States as a cook and chef. “My first job was a dishwasher at a country club in Virginia,” he said. “That’s where I got the taste of what I wanted to do. I’d help out with the prep, see the guys working the line.” Next, he cooked at a seafood buffet, then moved to Tucson, Ariz., where he ran the sauté station at an Italian restaurant. Next came a cook’s position at a Doubletree Hotel. “The chef at the Doubletree was the first professional chef I worked for,” said Weflen. “He was a Culinary Institute of America graduate. I developed a love for hotels – the banquets, the fine dining restaurants and even the short order cooking. After I got experience in all those areas, I decided to go to culinary school.” So at age 22, he moved to San Francisco to attend the California Culinary Academy, working in fine hotels to round out the experience. “I did my externship at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona,” he said. “That turned into a fulltime position. Then I transferred seasonally to the Jasper Park Lodge in Alberta, Canada. It was a hunting lodge; when I wasn't working, I was fishing.” Later, it was off to St. Louis for a sous chef position, and then on to the Cascades Restaurant at the Nashville amusement park Opryland, and finally to Coronado Springs resort in Orlando, Fla., where he served as executive sous chef over multiple restaurants. After a couple of years in Florida, Weflen decided it was time to settle closer to his family in Illinois. “I was so far from home, and I thought it was a great opportunity to come here to Evansville,” he said, “especially because it was an executive chef position. I came back to my roots.”Weflen brings a very well-rounded expertise in the culinary field. “I’ve had exposure to so many different cuisines,” he said. “In Tucson it was Southwestern, and San Francisco was Californian. It was French Canadian in Canada, and game;

we roasted elk. At Opryland, we focused on fresh fish and refined Southern food. “In Florida there was a large South American influence. So I pick what I like from all those experiences to adapt to what’s needed.” Weflen loves discovering new things about food and food history. “It's not just about cooking, but about food as a whole and the way it affects people,” he said. “You can cook great food but it’s kind of the understanding behind it.” Now that Weflen has settled comfortably closer to his roots, we hope to enjoy his culinary passion and expertise for a long time. “I've only been here for about three months, but I love Evansville,” he said. “It’s a small town, but there’s a lot of growth and development, lots of opportunities.” — Aimee Blume Casino Aztar - 421 N.W. ZOO BreW 2012 Primal meets persnickety on June 9 th from 7 to 10pm in Mesker Park Zoo for the annual Zoo Brew. The stars may be out in full force but the real stars of the night will be the collection of unique beers and wines offered by local and regional breweries and wineries. Upon entering, the patron will receive a complimentary sampling mug and a sampling guide with detailed information about the breweries and wineries and their products. From illicit IPAs to luscious lagers, a whole spectrum of microbrews and craft beers will be available for tasting. The breweries featured will include Turoni’s Brewery of Evansville, the Ohio Valley Homebrewer’s Association, Fred’s Finest Brewery, and many more. Amid all the exotic animals, patrons will be entranced by the lascivious perfumes of a bouquet of various reds and whites. It will be a scene removed from A Mid Summer Nights Dream. From zinfandels to merlots, a large variety of wines will be on hand for enjoyment. The wineries featured will include St. James Winery of Missouri, Winzerwald out of Perry County, Easely of Indianapolis, and many more. As if the night was not going to be extravagant enough, Mesker will provide nothing short of a parade of food to please most any conceivable palate. The army of restaurants, grills, and eateries will include Biaggi’s, Just Rennies, Anthony’s Heavenly Cheesecake, Ri Ra’s, Hacienda, Firehouse Subs, Bar-b-que Barn, Heady’s Pizza, Kan Pai, Papa John’s, and Cleaver’s. If none of these get the saliva going, do not fret because these are only a few of the culinary establishments that will be on hand. Besides the barrage of food and beverage, the royal treatment continues with local bands and performers for entertainment. Local musicians will include The Toddlers, The Black Sheep, and more. Zach Watson will also perform routines with his topsy-turvy trix stix (two rubber bound drumsticks and one rubber bound q-tip with frilly ends.) This event is perfect for a date night or any single individual who wants to be treated like a king or queen for an evening. There are few nights out that have such potential to be unforgettable. Tickets for Zoo Brew are limited and will be available at Mesker and on their website starting May 1 st. In 1971, his best season, Day hit .283 with four home runs and 33 RBIs for the Expos. Day also played for the Evansville Triplets. The New York native has also been a hitting instructor for the Cardinals and Kansas City Royals organizations. 2nD annual HOOsier HOG DaDDy BBQ cHallenGe It is one of the most common smells in the entirety of the human condition and it is also one of the most enticing: the sumptuous aroma of grilled meat. The 2nd Annual Hoosier Hog Daddy BBQ Challenge is back with a tasty vengeance to blast its way into its patrons’ nasal cavities and render all other mental functions incapacitated. The event will take place on site at SWIRCA & More on West Virginia Street from noon to 6pm. On May 5th, that glorious scent will drift across a square mile of Evansville, making believers of everyone in its path. The source of this fantastical fragrance is not a grill pixie flittering about joyously, waving her wand and summoning fragrance, or picking people up to float them to the source of the goodness. This is no cartoon. Rather, this is a beef blitzkrieg, a pork press; it is full-on sauce-laden chicken combat. Contenders will face off brandishing tongs and forks to grill and smoke their finest fair to offer the judges and the crowd. However, in this conflict there are no casualties – just collateral elation. The $5 entrance fee gives patrons a sampling cup and access to any offerings from challenge participants. The bar-b-que battle is open to the public. An entry fee of $50 allows contestants to grill or smoke their best offerings to win a first, second, or third place trophy. There will also be a people’s choice winner, whose entry fee will be waived at next year’s challenge. This year’s challenge will be family friendly, boasting activities and games for children as well as alternative food options. There will also be live entertainment for children and adults. Bruckman’s will be on site with pork butts, dry rubbed ribs, and sauced ribs all available for preorder and purchase by patrons. All proceeds from the 2nd Annual Hoosier Hog Daddy BBQ Challenge will go to benefit SWIRCA. SWIRCA is area agency designated by the Indiana Division of Aging to be responsible for planning and coordinating a system of services for older Hoosiers in our region of Indiana, which includes Gibson, Perry, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh, and Warrick counties. SWIRCA goes above and beyond in their philanthropy. They don’t confine their services to those ages 60 and up; they do their part to help disabled youth and adults as well. In 50 games that year, McCauley led the Otters to a 19-31 record but has revamped the Evansville roster in hopes of leading the Otters back to the playoffs. Andy, 43, has managed in the Frontier League before dating back to 1998 when he became the skipper for the Kalamazoo Kodiaks. The next season, McCauley managed the London Werewolves, another Frontier League team, to a 54-30 record and a league championship. His overall record is 560-597. McCauley was named manager of the year in the Frontier League in 1999 and in the Northern League in 2004.

News 4U: From looking at your portfolio, a lot of your

Gary: “It took me nine years to get to this point, but I was inexperienced when I first started. So I had to latch on to something that was established before I could branch out. After experimenting with abstract expressionism, minimalism, and making hybrid sculptural paintings, I wanted to add imagery to my work. I wanted to show my drawing abilities, make the kind of work that was wasting away in my sketchbooks, and could set me apart from other people. The evolution of that came from my own desires to change myself; my work just followed.”

Gary: “Make that character relatable in some sense; develop the idea as far as you can, understand who that character is inside an elaborate world of similar confines to your own. I try to create a centralized character, build everything around them. I want the viewer to identify with them on an individual level in hopes of exposing a universal thought in some degree. We're all living a life, living a frenetic pattern, a chaotic routine that we as people, alone in our own minds, are constantly trying to understand consciously and subconsciously.”

Gary: “I'm self taught in graphic design. It's something I was inclined to do coming from an illustrative background. I opened the Milksop Studio in March 2011. It’s still in its fledgling state, but I'm designing ACD t-shirts, designing my own brand of t-shirts 'HONKYSAUCE', and working on eight commission paintings. I had a solo show at Wired Coffeehouse in January. YART is coming up in the spring and fall at Jesika & Toby Ellis' home. The ACD has three major shows this year and I anticipate being in all three: a video game themed show in the spring, a science fiction show in the summer, and another show at The Bower Surheinrich in the fall.” — Tamatha Lant

delightful man with a warm and gregarious manner, David Schnerr is well known in the music industry as a composer, arranger, and orchestrator. Schnerr’s exploits have indeed been remarkable – he was accepted into the American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers in 2010. He is a member of ASMAC, ASCAP, the League of Composers, The Registry of Guitar Tutors, and the LA Jazz Society, and a faculty member of Riverbend Academy in Henderson, KY. In this interview, David offers a brief overview of his musical background and shares insights into many of the other notable projects and musicians he's affiliated with. The information presented in this interview is just a drop in the ocean. There is much more to tell and share. All in all, this is an interesting interview with a composer who has a lot to offer the creative world.

News 4U: Could you give us some information about

your musical background? David Schnerr: I was always going to be a composer. I wrote 2 compositions when I was 6. I thought I had conquered the world. As I got older and learned more theory and harmony, my writing started maturing. By the time I was 12, I had been through the Piston theory and the Kennan orchestration texts along with several others and my writing was pretty polished.

N4U: I know you play a lot of live music – how does that differ from creating music in the studio? DS: We just performed Haydn's Little Organ Mass and Vivaldi's Gloria at the First United Methodist Church in Henderson, Kentucky, but most of my time is spent composing. Composing is very intricate and detailed. It is etched in stone, so you have to be totally committed to your end product. I don't use computer score writers, I use printed score paper and pencils. When I transmit scores, I have them scanned into PDF files. My studio isn't like most, you see. No drums, guitars, and effects gadgets. Mine is what is known as a 'project studio.' I have a MIDI keyboard, an audio interface, and a computer with a recording studio and a full symphony orchestra in it.

N4U: Can you tell us about some arrangements and orchestrations you have created or developed for conventional (classical) and commercial projects? DS: Currently I am connected, via internet, with other musicians in England, Italy, Germany, and Russia. I'm working on a piece for Andrea Mogavero, an Italian flutist. N4U: Who have you enjoyed working with most? DS: Presently, I love working with the First United Methodist Church Orchestra and Chorus under the direction of Matthew Vanover. N4U: You certainly have a wide range of work in the modern and modal jazz styles. Is there a score that you feel defines you? A score that you could hand to people and say, "This is me." DS: The R&B modern bag is what I like as far as jazz. As a classical composer my style is romantic/postromantic and contemporary. — Tamatha Lant

ABOUT THE BAND: 5th Degree Burn is a Southern Indiana rock band with roots in Dubois, Spencer and Warrick counties, with Rob Cunningham on vocals and guitar, Stacia Buechlein on vocals, Dennis Talbott on guitar, Alan Lange on bass, and Keith Poehlein on drums. WHAT THEY COVER: Covering songs by some of today’s bands such as 3 Days Grace, Eve 6, Seether, Nickleback, Cage the Elephant, and Neon Trees. 5th Degree Burn also delivers the classics from bands such as Pat Benetar, Bon Jovi, Collective Soul, Joan Jett, and 3 Doors Down. You might even hear some old Ozzy or even The Cranberries at one of their shows. THEIR INSPIRATION: Bands such as Aerosmith, Kiss, and Rush were some of the earlier influences who helped inspire the band. Influences from later acts like Mariah Carey and Creed also helped shape the music in their set list and give 5th Degree Burn a wide range of music to perform. This variety of musical influences also gives the audience a good cross section of rock-n-roll to listen to at one of the band’s performances. WHERE CAN PEOPLE CATCH YOUR PERFORMANCES: 5th Degree Burn has been rockin’ bars in towns like Huntingburg, Jasper, Ft. Branch and Newburgh to name a few and have a busy spring lined up. SHOCK TOP LEMON SHANDY (St. Louis, MO)

Jaqulyn Woolsey – 4

This beer poured a pale, cloudy yellow, and you can definitely smell the lemon. It’s almost like a cola and doesn’t hit you over the head with lemon flavor. I can definitely see myself grabbing a six-pack for a barbecue on a nice summer day. It’s crisp and refreshing.

Jabez Martinez – 4

This is a slightly cloudy, golden beer, and while I am not a big fan of the “lemon” beers, I did like this one. This beer had the regular Belgian-style wheat flavor with just a hint of lemon. Lately, everyone has been dumping too much citrus flavor into their beer, but this one was really good. The lemon flavor was present, but it didn’t hit you over the head with it.

Todd Zachritz – 2.0

Anheuser-Busch’s entry into the “ shandy wars” may be opportunistic, but it is tastier than their chief competitor’s. This golden ale pours with an average head and no lace. The nose is subtle and lager-like, with only a tinge of lemon. The flavor is light and rather bland, but only teasing with the honey-lemon sweetness, rather than slapping it up front. Definitely lacking, but I’ve had worse.

TRITON BREWING – MAGNIFICENT AMBER (Indianapolis, IN)

Todd Zachritz – 4.0

A new brewery here, and it’s even semi-local! I was really pleased with this one—an attractive amber despite having limited carbonation and lace on the glass. The flavor, though, is nicely rich—definitely more flavorful than most amber ales. I get more brown ale notes—a little roasty on the malts, a bit nutty, and a hint of hoppy sharpness at the finish, too. Well done!

Jabez Martinez – 4

This beer has a heavy hops aroma and a medium-brown appearance. I could taste light flavors of coffee and roasted malts with some caramel added. I was prett y impressed with this beer and glad to see it was brewed inIndianapolis. I will keep my eye out for it.

Jaqulyn Woolsey – 2.5

This beer is a strange mix of hops and caramel malts; I wish it was a little less hoppy. It’s more bitter than I like, and that bitterness lingers on your palate. Overall, I don’t really love or hate it. It’s definitely darker than your average amber beer.

SCHLAFLY – SUMMER LAGER (St. Louis, MO)

Todd Zachritz – 3.5

Schlafly’s summer seasonal is a clean, golden lager with a thick, foamy head and average lace. The taste is a sturdy malt base with a slight hint of citrus. Finishes kind of sweet, but also quite pleasant and easy. Solid and session-worthy.

Jabez Martinez – 3.5

This is a clear, golden beer that looked like a Bud and sort of tasted like one too. Okay, maybe it didn’t taste totally like a Bud, but it had a sour bready flavor like a domestic beer. Once again, one of my favorite breweries disappointed me. I would have actually scored it lower, but I am hoping I just got a bad sample.

Jaqulyn Woolsey – 2.5

This one poured a very bright-yellow color. It’s not as crisp and refreshing as I hoped it would be, compared to the other “summer” beers. It’s milder and less punchy than I would expect.

GOOSE ISLAND – SUMMERTIME (Chicago, IL)

of almost sweet malts with some citrus tones—enjoyable.

This one poured a nice, clear golden color, and it had a nice lacing that hung on the glass. It doesn’t have an overpowering smell or taste; it’s actually pretty mild. For me, this is a nice light beer with a slightly bitter sweetness.

Goose Island rarely disappoints, and this light-golden, kolsch-style beer is no exception. It pours with a massive head and attractive lace, and summons an aroma of slight citrus hops alongside the lagery grains. The taste is a bright melding

THe Evansville Ballet Presents Peter Pan

he Evansville Ballet Presents Peter Pan. Twisting and turning through the whimsical atmosphere of Neverland willnever be preformed with such grace and agility than on the toes of the members of the Evansville Ballet. The character, formed in the mind of author J.M. Barrie at the cusp of the 19th and 20th centuries, will come to life on May 19th and 20th. Make no mistake; Pan will be up to all his usual antics. The viewer will experience firsthand the heckling and prodding of the evil old swashbuckler Captain Hook and the kinship and games of those cheeky ruffians the lost boys. His more refined and fair friends, Wendy and Tinkerbell, will also be along for the ride. The Evansville Ballet’s rendition of Peter Pan is sure to appeal not only to the young but also to the young at heart as well. The show is catered to be both an excellent excursion for children and a night out for adults, with performances at 2pm and 7pm. The Henderson Fine Arts Center will play host to two days of poised adventure. As an organization, the Evansville Ballet offers training for the most serious of dancers in the form of a five level program; it also provides more casual classes for those wanting to learn ballet. vansville baseball fans already have one month full of major league games to rev up their appetite for opening day of the Evansville Otters. The Otters begin their season on May 11, 2012 at legendary Bosse Field against the Southern Illinois Miners in an exhibition game which will benefit Jacob’s Village. The game will also a feature a “Diamond Dig” sponsored by Tracy Zeller Jewelry in honor of Mother’s Day. The Diamond Dig will consist of women over the age of 18 coming onto the field to dig for a $1,000 shopping spree to Tracy Zeller Jewelry. The Otters are rebuilding this season coming off a 39-57 record which resulted in a tie with the Florence Freedom for last place in the Frontier League’s West Division. The turnaround may begin at the very top of the Otters’ management with the promotion of Joel Padfield to the position of General Manager. Padfield has spent the last several years as the Otters’ Director of Sales and Revenue Department. Otters owner Bill Bussing said of Padfield, “He understands that we are not just trying to win baseball games, but to create a compelling evening of entertainment for all of our fans.” Speaking of the promotion, and the promotion of the upcoming season, Padfield said, “I, along with the rest of the front office staff look forward to the upcoming 2012 season. In addition to an event to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the film release “A League of Their Own,” plans are in the works for another exciting summer at historic Bosse Field.” The Otters open their regular season at Bosse Field against the Washington Wild Things for a weekend series beginning May 18, 2012. Changes to the Otters’ front office and rosters aren’t the only differences fans may notice this summer. The Otters announced in February that the team’s first manager, Charles “Boots” Day, will serve this season as the team’s hitting coach. “Boots” was a major league player with the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, and Montreal Expos. After his playing days, Day served for many years in various baseball leagues as a hitting coach and hitting instructor. Most recently, Day was a hitting coach for Frontier League West Division rival Normal CornBelters. Otters’ skipper Andy McCauley, entering his second full season, said of Day, “‘Boots’ is a quality hitting coach with a wealth of knowledge to share with our players. vIdeo GaMes Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2013 Over the years the Tiger Woods series has donned more bells and whistles, making the game increasingly complicated and difficult. The trouble really escalated around Tiger Woods 2009 when Electronic Arts (EA) introduced a new putting dynamic that made putting touchy and unforgiving. There are a handful of games released recently that possess game play and graphics that flirt with reality. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2013 is one of those games. The clarity of the environments and the details in the courses are astonishing. Players have so many tools at their disposal it is overwhelming. Players can alter how far up or back in their stances they want the ball to be placed. They can even choose to narrow or widen their stances depending on the terrain of the hole. This may sound great but in truth this makes the game astronomically frustrating and almost completely inaccessible. If I wanted golf dynamics this challenging and realistic I would grab my clubs and go out to an actual course to play 18 holes. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2013 is Kinect and Move compatible so it might be easier when utilizing motion gaming, but while using a regular controller it requires monastic patience and bionic precision. The most nerve grinding aspect is the putting; it is like having someone carefully drill through the surface of your fingernail to relieve the pressure of the smashed and bruised flesh underneath. It is agonizing and exasperating. On the upside, this game is very in-depth and fulfilling and it provides players with enormous space to grow. This gives Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2013 high replay value. The game type in which the gamer gets to play as Tiger though his golf career is cinematic and unique, but unless you already play golf or have substantial knowledge of the sport you will struggle with this game. — Nick Durcholz

Geocaching is a treasure-hunting game where players use GPS and smartphone devices to locate containers called geocaches. Millions of “geocachers” worldwide are searching every day for the special containers. Once a geocache is located and opened, the person who discovered the item must replace it with an item of equal or greater value for the next geocacher to find. The phenomenon began in 2000 and has grabbed the attention of gamers worldwide. African American Museum 5th Anniversary

ince its official formation in April of 2007, the Evansville African American Museum, or EAAM, has enriched the community by fervently providing public programs, road trips, and exhibitions educating the city about African American culture. The museum is a beacon to the proud heritage of a people of incredible perseverance, both in Evansville and in all communities of our nation. From ‘Fabulous First Friday’ speeches, true to life material displays of early 20 th century African American life, to modern exhibits promoting the arts, the museum has much to offer. Even the structure in which the museum is housed stands as testament to local African American culture. According to the EAAM’s official website, it is the last remaining building of Lincoln Gardens, the second Federal Housing Project of the New Deal in 1938 under the administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The EAAM has planned an event in honor of its fifth anniversary as a local monument to diversity by hosting award-winning journalist and author Roland S. Martin on May 18th at 7 p.m. at The Centre in downtown Evansville. Martin is the author of three books, including Speak, Brother! A Black Man’s View of America. The Avengers

Walt Disney This much-anticipated film is based on one of the most formidable groups of heroes in the history of mankind. The Avengers sports a starstudded cast, with Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. The Avengers will also feature more obscure but esteemed characters such as Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye. The team of superheroes is formed by the S.H.I.E.L.D. peace-keeping agency headed by Nick Fury. They will be mankind’s only hope against Thor’s evil adopted brother Loki and his band of baddies, who are attempting to take over the planet for their own heinous purposes. The Avengers is co-written and directed by Joss Whedon, who earned his comic book chops directing other Marvel Universe-based films such as the X-men series and Watchmen.

Warner Brothers The vampire craze has cast a shadow over the nation for a few years now, so why not another vampire-based film? Fortunately, this film is directed by the duke of dread himself: Tim Burton. It would be safe to assume that any vampire story in the hands of Burton is absolutely terrifying, but that would be a mistake is this case: this movie is a comedy. The genre of the movie is really the only surprise up Burton’s sleeve because, yes, Johnny Depp is in it, as well as Burton’s wife Helena Bonham Carter. Depp plays 200-year-old vampire Barnabus Collins, who is released from a long captivity to discover he must play bodyguard to his maladjusted descendants. The film boasts a big-name cast including Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Lee, and Alice Cooper.

The Dictator Paramount This film is a first for uninhibited funny man Sacha Baron Cohen. It is his first film that did not originate as a sketch on Da Ali G Show, the show that brought Cohen into the limelight. The Dictator is sure to carry on the tradition of Cohen’s caustic brand of comedy. He was involved in almost every aspect of its conception, writing, producing, and acting in the film. The film, which will also star Ben Kingsley, Anna Faris, and John C. Reilly, centers on a foreign dictator who has oppressed his people for years and has a strong distaste for democracy. He strives to “protect” his people from the intrusion of democracy. If it doesn’t sound funny don’t be alarmed because Cohen has a knack for making serious things pretty hilarious. If the story sounds oddly familiar, you are not dreaming. The film is said to be based on the book Zabibah and The King by Saddam Hussein.

Men in Black III Columbia In world where aliens walk among us incognito, the Men in Black series always finds a way to make things more spectacular then they already are. The third installment of the series will feature a young Agent K played by Josh Brolin. Why is he young? Agent J, played by Will Smith, has gone back in time, to 1969 to be exact. While in 1969, he must prevent a sinister alien plot to assassinate his partner, forever changing his own history as he knows it. To make matters worse, he must achieve his goal within a 24-hour time limit or be stuck in the time-space continuum forever. The Review: After a serious and noteworthy performance in Moneyball, Jonah Hill returns to the type of role he’s best known for: the irreverent, yet lovable, wiseacre who is actually all heart. As for the screenplay, writers Brian Gatewood and Brian Alessandro rely on a tried and true formula for this type of coming-of-age comedy: the screw-up goofball who, in the end, learns as much from the screwed-up goofball children as they do from him. Likewise, comedic shortcuts are taken with heavy reliance on expletive-ridden jibes and fart jokes. In all, the film is watchable, but nothing we haven’t seen before.

The Review: Recently, George Clooney has moved from strength to strength with great films like Up in the Air, The Ides of March, and now The Descendants. This is a film that slides effortlessly between the many stories being told, and offers no simplistic resolutions to the difficult, real-life circumstances it explores. Matt knows he lacks the wisdom to help his troubled teenage daughter or the necessary compassion to entirely forgive his wife for her betrayals. In spite of all this, he makes the tough decisions, and, more importantly, begins to understand the importance of simply being present and accepting the others in his life, despite their imperfections.

This is a rare glimpse of one of the world’s most powerful women and her struggle to overcome the barriers of the male-dominated political world.

The Review: The Iron Lady is a showcase for the undeniable talents of Meryl Streep; however, we ultimately learn very little about Margaret Thatcher that we couldn’t learn from a cursory browsing of Wikepedia. Important political events are shown in montage and flashbacks, rarely allowing us time to become truly involved in her story. Briar Rabbit Chicago singer-songwriter Briar Rabbit (Phillip-Michael Scales) has a lot to say—in just two EPs, he’s already made a pretty huge statement. His debut album, The Company You Keep, is extraordinary in both sound and lyrical depth. On the song “Tread Lightly,” Scales sings, “You’re beautiful and skittish, unconventional and kind”—and that definition seems to suit his music perfectly, too. It’s filled with songs that all seem to do different things, and each one illustrates his myriad talents. I see why Scales calls this genre “thought pop”—it’s hard to define using the regular conventions of genre. Briar Rabbit is a pop act in the same way that the Barenaked Ladies and Steven Page are; it’s a kind of pop music, but it feels trite to call it that. Scales tells stories in every song, and with remarkable wordplay. For example (and speaking of Steven Page, check out the vocals in this chorus and tell me if they aren’t close), in the title track, “The Company You Keep,” Scales sings– There’s a ghost upstairs, he stamps, he shouts, he screams until the morning But it’s the melody that he always sings that keeps me from sleeping And there’s a girl somewhere I guess you could say that she got away though I disagree Cause her beauty was a welcome mat, she said wipe your feet and hang your hat But I couldn’t stay for long They say you’re only as good as the company you keep but lately I’ve been keeping to myself I never understood what it meant anyhow And as impressive as his debut is, it’s the next EP— The Great Routine, which is the story of a minstrel actor around the turn of the century—that really makes him stand out. From the time the man decides to become an actor to the moment he realizes he’s played a role in his own exploitation, the character that Briar Rabbit has created is very real and very raw. Scales is hoping to visit the Evansville area soon, once in May and once in July. Keep an eye out for exact dates, and be sure you don’t miss this exceptionally talented artist. — Katie Darby-Mullins

Chicago instrumental postrock group Russian Circles continue to evolve far beyond their peers with their 4th album, "Empros". The epic opening track, "309" instantly cements the band into genre-defying territory, infusing their moody postmetal with a blinding darkness and tempo akin to black metal. It's a tight and aggressive sound, indeed. "Mladek" brings a more melodic angle, like if Mogwai went more complex and heavy. "Schipol" brings the epic melodies of Sigur Ros to meld with the brute force of SWANS or Neurosis. The 10-minute "Batu" is an assault of textures and angular riffage, closing on an ambient note. "Praise Be Man" ends it all up with an odd campfire-style singalong that wouldn't be out of place on a Devendra Banhart record, again building into a bruising rock behemoth. As I see it, "Empros" is Russian Circles firing on all cylinders. Brilliant! — Todd Zachritz

“Koloss" album Nuclear Blast 5 Stars Sweden's best-known and (arguably) most influential metal band returns with their long-awaited 7th studio album, and it's a crushing

masterpiece. "I Am Colossus" is a refined assault of surgical metal guitar riffs and complex arrangements. The riffing is immaculate and technical, while lead throat Jens Kidman is positively corrosive. "The Demon's Name Is Surveillance" is speed metal redefined -- absolutely inhuman in its ferocity and speed. "Behind The Sun" is a steamroller of metal madness, while "The Hurt That Finds You First" is a juggernaut of massive math-metal-jazz with a hint of psychedelic ambience. With the impeccable "Koloss", Meshuggah redefine "heavy", shackling machine metal with massive arrangements that lay waste to 90% of modern rock. Damn, this is immense. — Todd Zachritz

Fastway

"Eat Dog Eat" CD MVD Audio

Fastway is the band of Fast Eddie Clarke (best known as the early guitarist for metal/punk legends Motorhead), and this ever-revolving project is a much more mainstream metal showcase for Clarke's fierce guitarwork. Vocalist Toby Jepson (formerly with Little Angels) has the classic "Hollywood Strip" vibe, and this album doesn't stray from that classic rock template. But, fortunately, the star of the show is easily Clarke, whose smoking riffs give some necessary bluesy swagger to the set. "Eat Dog Eat" doesn't bring anything new to the table, but fans of classic bar rock & roll/metal will certainly appreciate the band's tried-and-proven sound. —Todd Zachritz

Public Image Limited

"Live At Rockpalast 1983" DVD + CD MIG Music 4 Stars Packaged separately, this set of classic PiL sees John Lydon joined by a young Martin Atkins (later of Killing Joke and Pigface) and some session musicians for a roll through the band's finest era. We get well-played classics like "Public Image", "Religion", "Flowers Of Romance", "Chant", "(This Is Not A) Love Song",, "Under The House",

and even an odd cover of "Anarchy In The UK". The band were at the end of their reign as innovators by 1983, with a move towards a more streamlined sound (hinted at by "Love Song", "Bad Life", etc.), but the tracks here are faithful to PiL's early and influential melding of dub, punk, and krautrock. The DVD is a wonderful pro-shot, multicamera presentation, capturing both Lydon's charismatic antics and Atkins' sinewy drumming. The CD is equally as superb, with a clear, well-recorded sound that could almost be mistaken for a studio product. Essential documents for Public Image fans, and far from the bootlegs that these may look like. — Todd Zachritz

The Willows

"Sometimes I'm Ancient" CD thewillowsart.com A cool 10-song debut from a young Evansville indie/pop band that will appeal to fans of emotive and moody stuff like Jeremy Enigk and Sigur Ros. Willows amicably join swirling, textured guitars with raw, emo-style vocals. Expert production here, too -- not too rough, and not too slick, either. If they can develop their keen instrumental skills and add some space and flow to their already formidable arsenal, I see great possibilities. That said, this is a standout debut, no doubt. Kudos, guys! — Todd Zachritz

A photo booth supplier should always include props for the guests to wear. It is the guest’s choice to dress up or not. However, props really help the people who don’t usually like to have their picture taken to relax and have a good time. At one recent event, a large group of young men in their mid-twenties came in mumbling to themselves, “I’m not going in there” (referring to the booth). Then after a few drinks and a few hours, they emerged from the booth in pink fluffy crowns and boas, saying, “Come on guys, let’s go!” It‘s very popular among groups to coordinate hats, boas, and glasses. What types of shots make for a great set of wedding pictures and how does a photographer go about getting them? What should a photographer do to make the experience the most comfortable for the happy couple? Equinox Photography

I work to give my clients a representation of the full story of the day with a combination of photojournalism, a few posed shots, and what I call “coached candids.” By “coached candids,” I mean that I take a few minutes once or twice during the wedding day to get romantic, stylized portraits of the bride and groom. I find an ideal location and we have a little “modeling session” to show their relationship, their love for each other, and just how incredibly good they look that day! As the principal photographer for Equinox Photography, I have photographed hundreds of weddings. I have a degree in photography, I pursue fine art photography in my spare time, and I’m pretty easy to get along with. Those qualities make me able to create professional, one-of-a-kind images with an artistic twist as well as helping to make the experience fun and hassle-free on the wedding day.

We have two types of ceremonies. We have the basic civil, for those that want something very simple and private. Our catering is set up like a buffet bar. We come in to cater the events that lead up to the wedding such as the wedding shower, and bachelor or bachelorette parties. On the day of the wedding, we are available to come in to cater lunch to the bridal party as well. When we cater a pre- or post-ceremony event such as a wedding or baby shower, we give the customer a $25 gift card to give out to their guests or whomever they choose. When we cater we bring the freshly baked potatoes and then you get 11 different toppings with which your party can build their own potatoes. There are options to suit nearly any taste. It is a cost of $5 a person. For a dollar extra we also offer a brownie platter for dessert.

What are the most popular dishes you see at weddings? Are there meals that are better served plated than buffet-style? What advice can you offer couples when making the decision to serve a plated vs. a buffet-style meal? Just Rennie’s Catering:

The most popular dishes that we see at weddings are chicken and pork entrées because they please the majority of the guests. These entrees also fit within most couple’s budgets. We are currently seeing quite a few weddings that are serving beef tenderloin. The quality of the beef is very moist, tender, and pleasing to a large crowd’s palette. When making a decision regarding whether your meal should be buffet-style or plated, look at where the wedding reception will be located. If your venue has a large kitchen and your budget is more flexible, then a plated meal may be an option that is appealing to you. If your budget is smaller or you have a large crowd to feed, a buffet dinner may be more your style because you can feed the guests quickly and keep the food hot.

Intimate Details

What advice can you give to a couple that likes the idea of lingerie, but may be a little new to buying it? Are there currently any popular items for men? Exotica

For the couple that may be new to the idea of lingerie, or may be a little embarrassed buying it for the first time, we suggest starting with a basic baby doll or teddy negligee. Go shopping for the items together so that each partner has an option in selecting the piece. Be sure to try on the clothing so that a proper fit is ensured before purchasing. For the more conservative man, may we suggest trunks, which are shorter cut than boxers. For the individual that is a little more daring, thongs or briefs are popular options.

We are always honest with our customers. We like to treat our customers as we ourselves would like to be treated. As opposed to taking the customer’s money and rushing them out the door, we address the most minute of details and give our customers options to solve these problems depending on what is in accordance with their wishes and what best fits their budget. You wear a tux or dress that makes you feel like a million dollars, so you feel great on your special day. You want to have good memories. What better to accentuate those memories then to look your absolute best? We have to be very cautious about quick work. Most customers believe they can buy a dress, bring it in and pick it up in a half an hour. It would be physically impossible to fix a dress that may take seven hours to repair in an ideal timeframe and finish it quickly while handling many other customer’s garments at the same time. We take immense pride in the quality and precision of our work and those aspects would be compromised if we rushed on repairs and alterations. The earlier you plan your wedding the better. You would want to get everything done one month before the wedding date so you don’t have worry about anything and we can provide you with the most professional work possible. However, we do everything in our power when time is tight to bend over backwards for our customers and to help them with the services they need when they are in a bind.
