The Really 2013 Get ready to be really entertained while supporting a really great cause! It is time once again for the Really Big Show at the Centre, on February 9th at 7 p.m.

E

vansville ARC’s signature fundraising event is hosted by 14WFIE Chief Meteorologist Jeff Lyons. The event raises over $89,000 annually to support the tri-state area. Each year, the organizers spend a lot of time coming up with new ideas to make the Really Big Show, really big.

well as a team and trust each other. The final product is a labor of love by dozens of bright and talented folks,” said Lyons. The group starts planning the event in the summer at a BBQ party hosted by Lyons. This year’s ‘TV game show’ theme was actually on the board a couple of years ago, and the group decided this year to bring it to the stage.

“This year’s show has a solid lineup of mainly new acts that have not appeared on the show before. We have singers, dancers, musicians and several ‘notables’ from the community. We have some surprises planned for the game segments, and will actually use people from the audience to play real games for real prizes,” said Lyons. Lyons has been involved with the event since 2002.

“The most important thing to remember about the Really Big Show is that it is a fundraiser for Evansville ARC...an agency that provides programs and services to help people with intellectual disabilities learn life skills and find jobs in the community. Because we also feature our clients in the show, we use it as a way to educate the audience about what we do at ARC. I currently serve as Chairman of the Board at ARC, and have been active with the organization for about 12 years. I’m very blessed to be part of a great agency and even more blessed to be able to share what we do while entertaining an audience at the same time. The Really Big Show is a one-of-a-kind event that offers surprises and fun for the whole family,” Lyons added. —Brooklyn Solis

“Theo Boots, the Development Director at ARC was looking to a do a new and different kind of fundraiser and had the idea to do a community variety show. She assembled a group of about 10 people from the community to brainstorm. I came up the name “Really Big Show” after The Ed Sullivan Show-a TV variety show that ran from the 1950’s to the early 70’s. Our idea was to incorporate community leaders with hidden talents. We try to come up with a different theme each year to keep the show fresh and surprising.” While Lyon’s enjoys his role as the host, he also enjoys coming up with the theme and working it into a full stage production. “I function as the host and writer, and I get to work with some very talented and fun people to actually make the show happen. Rick Hobbs, the show’s producer, Terry Becker, our music director, Lisa Collins, the stage manager and Andy Herbertz and Dana Taylor, the set designers have all been with the show since the very beginning. Country music star Alan Jackson is clearly in it for the long haul. With over 50 top ten hits spread out over 14 albums and 60 million records sold worldwide, the 54-year-old Georgia native has been going strong for nearly 25 years.

M

ost impressively, he has written or cowritten 24 of his 35 number one hits. It’s a staggering achievement that puts him in the elite company of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Considering all of this success, no one would fault Jackson for kicking back and laying low for a while. But his fans know better. Jackson shows no sign of slowing down, continuing to release new music and tour with the same passion that helped him land a deal with Arista Records back in 1989. Along with special guests Gloriana and Greg Bates, Jackson returns to Evansville on February 8 at the Ford Center to promote his latest release, Thirty Miles West. Like most aspiring country singers, Jackson made the obligatory move to Nashville in the late 80’s and immediately set about making contacts in the music business. No less than the legendary Glenn Campbell was soon in Jackson’s corner and helped spread the

word about a promising new talent. With a record deal secured, his debut single “Blue Blooded Woman” soon followed. Though this initial recording failed to set the country charts on fire, Jackson continued to write and subsequently released his debut album Here in the Real World, as the 90’s dawned. All totaled, the album spawned four top five hits, including his first number one, “I’d Love You All Over Again.” After such an auspicious beginning to his career, Jackson felt the pressure to not only keep the momentum going but surpass the success of the debut. He delivered in spades – and number one songs. Don’t Rock the Jukebox arrived in 1991 and sent four singles to the top of the country charts, including the title track which became an anthem for his increasingly devoted fan base. Over the course of just two albums, Jackson had realized a career’s worth of hits. And still, there was more to come. Much like the certainty of the cowboy hat on his head, Jackson continued to coax sure-things from his guitar. The surest of them yet was just around the corner. Country music is known for its sly song titles and silly plays on words. Jackson really took it up a notch with his 1993 mega-hit “Chattahoochee” off the album A Lot About Livin’ (And a Little ‘bout Love). An immediate fan favorite, the song laughed its way straight to number one and won the CMA award for both Single and Song of the Year. The album was another milestone, racking up five top five hits in all. Career highlights over the last two decades include the 9/11 tribute “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)” and “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere.” Both won CMA Single of the Year and 2002’s Drive won album of the year. In addition, Jackson has received the CMA Entertainer of the Year award numerous times. Recently inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, Jackson has more than earned the respect of the music industry. His status as one of the 10 best selling artists since the inception of Soundscan, ranks him alongside such artists as Eminem and Metallica. His status as a live performer is just as legendary. —Thomas Ellis

T

When you first glance at Rodney Carrington, you see a dashing, charming country boy with an essence of George Strait and a Southern drawl dripping like thick-sliced bacon... Then he zings you with the unexpected. That’s Rodney Carrington.

he comedian/actor/writer/singer has many comedy albums under his thick and brassy belt buckle, selling over 3 million copies. Carrington has been delivering saucy stand-up comedy for nearly 20 years. His Southern and rather naughty comedy proved to be entertaining not just to syndicated radio programs, but live audiences who describe his show as a rollicking, slap-happy (if not shocking) observation at real life. According to Pollstar, Rodney has one of the top five highest grossing tours for the last several years, regularly selling out across the U.S. and Canada. Of course, those audiences can’t be wrong, eh? His resume also includes starring in his own TV sitcom Rodney,, which ran for two seasons on ABC. The star paired with Toby Keith, co-writing and starring in the film Beer for My Horses. He has also written a book entitled Rodney Carrington: Coming Clean. I’d hardly describe Carrington as a family entertainer; however, he uses family as a basis for a large portion of his humor. His songs include “Dancin’ With a Man,” “Show Them To Me,”, “Don’t Look Now,” and from his Christmas album: Camouflage and Christmas Lights.. His delivery initially takes off as a rather innocent, bland, country observation, but as I say, then comes the zinger. Carrington is supporting his “Laughter’s Good Tour” where he’ll be belt out his popular comedic songs on an acoustic guitar with his black cowboy hat and boots. The comedian will perform his stand-up comedy which will undoubtedly invite and welcome audience participation.

It is always refreshing to know that celebrities support and give to charity on a regular basis, and the comedian continues to prove his spirit of giving. Rodney, along with his wife, Terri, created the Rodney Carrington Foundation which supports local and national charities through ongoing events. $2 from each ticket sold for Rodney Carrington performances go directly to the Foundation to support its projects. Recent recipients of the star’s contributions have been cancerstricken children and church programs. If you are looking for some belly laughs, this show is for you but make sure you are sturdy enough to handle the punch. The show is for mature audiences only. —Lanea Stagg

The Joke Get Your

Factory: On!

It’s hard to believe that Evansville has gone eight long years without a comedy club. When the Funny Bone closed shop it wasn’t just the laughter that died; the city’s nightlife suffered, too.

F

or all of the entertainment options available here, nothing can quite match the joy and release of spending an evening doubled over in the grips of hilarity. But while the live comedy void piqued the interest of many local business people, no one was brave enough to take the plunge. Finally, that all changed last summer. Carolyn and Jay Carter opened the Joke Factory downtown in July of 2012. It is the first club of a franchise (the brainchild of comedian Artie Fletcher) that will expand to 21 clubs across America in 2013. Initially dubbed the Jazzy Grooves Comedy Club, the first few months dragged as Evansville took its typically sweet time warming to an unfamiliar venue. “When we started out it was slow. But when we officially changed the name in November, things started to pick up and the response has been great ever since,” explains Carolyn. But it wasn’t just the lack of buzz that stalled the club’s success. In the eight year interim between the Funny Bone and the Joke Factory, the community simply forgot the thrill and unpredictability of live comedy. “A lot of people weren’t used to comedy that wasn’t on television. The live stand-up experience is totally different and we’re reintroducing that to the market,” says Jay.

A lot of people weren’t used to comedy that wasn’t on television. The live stand-up experience is totally different and we’re reintroducing that to the market.” —Jay Carter

Over the last several months, the Carters have instituted some very effective marketing techniques including buy-one, get-one-free passes and drawings for prizes. But more than anything, a recent open mic competition dramatically raised the club’s profile. “That drew in a lot of people, because the contestants also had to bring in friends and family to add to their overall score,” explains Carolyn. The four week battle to determine the funniest person around concluded in early January. About 40 comedians from as far away as Ohio and Missouri vied for the $250 prize. While the Joke Factory is a great testing ground for local and regional talent, the club has featured many high profile comedians that routinely draw huge crowds. The likes of Heywood Banks, Mike Armstrong, Artie Fletcher, Big John Richardson, Tim Northern, Keith McGill and Spanky Brown - to name just a few - have all brought the house down. The Carters hope to score even more big stars in the coming months. “We’re trying to court Tommy Davidson to come. But most of the bigger names have actually called us to get booked. That’s what we like,” says Jay with a chuckle. Despite their wealth of business and entertainment experience, the Carters have not gone it alone. Help has come from the aforementioned Artie Fletcher, former Funny Bone management and even local furniture sales guru Pat Coslett. All view The Joke Factory as more than just a comedy club; it’s another step forward for the revitalization of downtown Evansville – and for the diversity of the community. “We’ve got an international crowd – all different races of people at the shows,” says Jay. “With all the problems today – the economy, wars – everybody needs a place where they can go and enjoy a beverage and let it all out, just relax and laugh for a good two hours. That’s what we’re presenting.” —Thomas Ellis

The Joke Factory is located at 217 Main Street in downtown Evansville. Shows are every Friday and Saturday night, and tickets generally range from just $10-$15. Visit thejokefactory.net for more info. Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • February 2013

Harrison 's Ballin’ Bros It is no secret in local high school basketball that Harrison High School possesses three warriors who have more than earned their feathers, time and time again.

C

oming through in the clutch and capturing victory multiple times, the brothers Ernie, Everett and Stanley are deadly efficient on the hardwood. It seems as if basketball is a genetic trait for these siblings, as they have captured close and wide victories this season. News4U spoke to two of the three ballin’ brothers to get to know them on and off the court.

News4U (N4U): What do you guys like

most about the game of basketball? Ernie Duncan (ER): What I like most about basketball is just being able to be with people that I love, and being able to step on the court every day. Everett Duncan (EV): What I like about basketball the most is all the fun and experience you get while playing. I get an unexplainable feeling running out on the court and nothing can compare to it.

N4U: Do you guys plan on playing after high school? If so, where?

30 | February

ER: I definitely plan on playing

basketball after high school. I’m receiving a lot of interest from Division I schools on playing basketball at their school, but I really don’t know where I’ll be heading at this point. EV: I want to go to college to play basketball. It all depends on who is interested, but I will play somewhere.

teacher. I love helping out other people, so doing something that can contribute to other peoples’ success is definitely something I would love to do. EV: I would like to be involved in some type of sports marketing, or just involved in sports in general. But I will most likely study in some type of marketing or management.

N4U: If you guys could go 1-on-1 with

N4U: How does it feel to be able to

a pro (or ex-pro) player, who would it be and why? ER: It would have to be Steve Nash. I would pick him because he’s my favorite player and I love watching him play. I try to model my own game after his. EV: If I could go against any player, it would have to be Ray Allen. To watch him shoot is incredible.

N4U: What do you guys plan on studying in college? What are your other interests? ER: I’m really interested in becoming either a middle school or high school

represent your school through your talent? ER: It feels awesome to represent my school. I love my school and take pride in putting my jersey on every game with the WARRIORS on the front. I’m very honored to represent my school with my athletic ability. It’s a blessing. EV: It is great. I use my talent to help the people around me get better and most definitely to represent that jersey every time I put it on. A lot of great people have gone through my school, and it is an honor to wear it. —Nick Durcholz

Los Alfaro S

A Whole New Cultural Experience

ometimes it seems like all of Evansville’s restaurants are packed into a few miles on the east side. As the area becomes more and more saturated, it gets more and more tempting to stop investigating what the rest of the city has to offer. That’s unfortunate, because there are some truly unique, independently run places to eat dispersed throughout Evansville; you just need to look a little off the beaten path. Located just a block away from the original Roca Bar pizza on South Kentucky Avenue, Los Alfaro is truly a family affair. Owned and operated by Pedro (father), Teresa (mother), Cindy (daughter) and Pedro (son) Alfaro, it opened in October of 2011 as Evansville’s first Latin American restaurant. The goal was a simple one: to share a new cultural experience with the community. Originally from El Salvador, the family has established a strong presence here. They take pride in the opportunity to expand the city’s diversity. Featuring recipes from their home country as well as Peru, Argentina, Ecuador and Mexico, Los Alfaro boasts a dynamic menu that is continually evolving and improving. The heart of Los Alfaro, Teresa, fell in love with cooking as a nine-year-old girl. Taking cues from her family and friends, she quickly became very passionate about food. It is her exacting nature and dedication to hard work that has made the restaurant such a consistently wonderful place to eat. “I really know a lot of ways to prepare food. For those who want to travel but don’t have the money, they can come here,” says Teresa with a smile. Menu highlights include Salvadorian Pupusa, SalvadorianStyle Grilled Steak, Teresa’s Special Chicken and Rice, Grilled Tilapia, Shrimp Cocktail, Ceviche de Pescado o Marisco, Fried Green Plantain Bananas, Peruvian Fajita and Potato Cake. New dishes are frequently added based on feedback. “We’re always listening to what our customers are saying – what they like and what they are interested in trying. And we’re always willing to accommodate and substitute different sides, vegetables, etc. – whatever the customer wants,” says Cindy. That level of service is rare in the restaurant business. But it’s a testament to the genuineness of

the Alfaro family. Every single person that walks through the door is made to feel instantly welcome by Teresa and the staff. Their warmth and friendliness is infectious, and you really feel like you’ve stepped into a new, inviting world. “We get a lot of customers that come every week because they say it’s like a special treat – something to look forward to and enjoy,” says Teresa. Still, the sharing of culture is not limited to just the food and service. Every Thursday and Friday night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Los Alfaro holds an all-ages dance club referred to as “family night.” Listen to Latin music and learn how to Salsa, dance the Merengue, Bachata, Cumbia or cha-cha. Once a month on Saturday (usually the third week of the month) the dance club is open from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. for adults 18 and over. Drinks are available for those 21 and over. Before you head zombie-like back to the same old restaurants, live a little and try a whole new cultural experience at Los Alfaro. Between the menu, service and atmosphere, you’ll feel alive again. —Thomas Ellis Los Alfaro is located at 1704 South Kentucky. Hours of operation are Tuesday – Thursday, 4 p.m. – 9 p.m. and Friday – Saturday, 11 a.m. – 9 p.m.

What ' s ‘ Cookin T

Backstage Bar & Grill 524 Main Street, Evansville, IN 47708 812-424-5020

he brainchild of three local men as a one-stop-shop for great live music, food and drinks, Backstage Bar & Grill comes from hard-nosed efforts despite its hip façade. “Three guys (Chris Byrley, Matt Elpers and Robbie Offerman) sat down and basically put their blood and sweat into this. They built this themselves. They had help with things they couldn’t do, but they were here 6 months until 5 in the morning. They would do their regular jobs then come here and work from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.,” says Share Carey, General Manager of Backstage Bar & Grill. Not only does Backstage offer high quality entertainment, with both local and national acts, they sport a straight-forward but evolving menu of unique food items based on multiple genres. Backstage has food items that carry culinary cred and inspire curiosity, not to mention watering mouths, but all that comes later. First comes the atmosphere of this new downtown favorite. Walking into the establishment, most everything has a contemporary vibe. Old school flair is added by the dark, rich wood of the liquor shelving and most surfaces are bright and vibrant in color. The brightness still manages to be welcoming though, and there are sharp, flat screen TV’s for watching sporting events. It is comfortable and modern. The first dish to arrive at my table is Backstage’s Blues Burger. It’s garb includes Bleu Cheese, Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato and Peppercorn Mayo. Like any good restaurant burger should, the Blues Burger has a great backyard grill taste to it. The subtle smoky flavor of the juicy beef exists with the savory, crisp Bacon and both are punctuated by the sour note of the Bleu Cheese. The made-fromscratch Peppercorn Mayo provides an earthy, rich flavor the pushes the burger over the top. It is texturally balanced as well. This burger chases the blues away.

32 | February

2013 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Next to come to my table is a tri-fecta of homemade sauces from Backstage’s Fry Bar. The Jalapeno Ketchup came out the gate with an explosive, bright flavor. It is zesty tomato, a mild spice from the jalapeno and a sweet note to finish it out. The Creole Mojo is velvety, sweet and savory mix with a strong, slow building spice. The Chipolte Mayo is a curious balance of smoky and earthy with a subtle spice. The third dish to arrive was the Fish Tacos. The dish is two Tilapia planks with slaw and an Avocado cream sauce. It walks the line carefully between light and savory. The fresh slaw provides an invigorating crunch and the fish is moist and tender. It also boasts a nice, slightly smoky flavor. The last dish placed in front of me is Backstage’s Main Attraction. Ladies and gents, this one lives up to its name. It is fried Lobster tail, Bacon, Tomato and Chipotle Mayo on a sweet bun and it is an illustrious steed of a sandwich. The Lobster tails are moist and flavorful but not too heavy, sporting a slight taste of the ocean. The overall savory flavor is countered by a slight sweetness from the bun and Tomato. Backstage Bar & Grill is poised to be a true Evansville mainstay. It is an ideal choice for quality, live music, a great selection of drinks and it is home to creative, tasty grub. According to Carey, Backstage is looking to make a jump into the world of pizza. I can only imagine the possibilities… —Nick Durcholz

Those jobs left him unsatisfied though, and his search for true happiness kept returning him to family, friends and food. After Owensboro, Weafer moved to Louisville, KY and enrolled in Sullivan University’s culinary program. He shares, “I love food and I like to make people happy and the opportunity at Ellis Park is the perfect fit.” Weafer considers the opening of Ellis Park’s new restaurant Lucky Joe’s and the other changes happening at the park, very exciting. Weafer said, “Having the chance to bring what I love to do to a local landmark like Ellis Park is an awesome opportunity. Between the opening of the new restaurant Lucky Joe’s and the atmosphere of the race track, I couldn’t think of a better situation.” Weafer describes the restaurant as such, “Lucky Joe’s is focused on quality food, made in-house from our locally produced pastrami and burgers, to our homemade soups. You’re not going to find anything like it in the area. We have a pastry case full of fresh danishes, muffins, cakes, pies, cookies and fruit prepared daily. We slow cook our turkeys, roast beef, pastrami and corned beef, along with freshly prepared soups in our prep kitchen daily.” For the lunch crowd, Weafer recommends Lucky Joe’s homemade soups, chili or locally produced burgers. For dinner he advises that guests should try their Reuben. It is loaded with Lucky Joe’s specially made pastrami. He also recommends Lucky Joe’s large selection of freshly baked pastries, muffins, pies, cakes and desserts. Ellis Park offers live Thoroughbred racing July 4th through Labor Day with simulcast racing available yearround Wednesday through Sunday. Simulcast wagering is available 7 days a week, year-round as well. Located in Henderson, KY by the Twin Bridges, Ellis Park is located on the Indiana side of the Ohio River. The facility boasts a dirt track that is one mile and one eighth in length, along with an inner turf course that is one mile long. The park’s main track includes seven furlong and one mile chutes. The location’s instant racing machines are open Friday through Saturday, 10 a.m. - 2 a.m. and Sunday through Thursday, 10 a.m. - 12 a.m. —Nikki Davis Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • February 2013

Beethoven's Kings

& Emperors

At The

Victory Theatre

E

vansville’s Philharmonic Orchestra welcomes concert pianist Norman Krieger Saturday, February 16 at 7 p.m. After the stress and chaos induced by holiday celebrations, not to mention challenging weather, it’s a fitting time to invite the tranquil music of Ludwig van Beethoven into your soul. Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra presents Beethoven’s Kings & Emperors performance, featuring guest concert pianist and Los Angeles native, Norman Krieger. Escape to Evansville’s Victory Theatre and witness Norman Krieger, described by The Washington Post as “one of the better-kept secrets on the concert circuit,” perform the eloquent pieces. EPO’s Conductor Alfred Savia, will lead the orchestra through a program to include Beethoven’s “King Stephen Overture,” “Emperor Piano Concerto No. 5” and the lovely “Symphony No. 7.” For those movie aficionados, “Symphony No. 7” was featured in the Academy Award-winning film The King’s Speech and Beethoven considered the seventh of his nine works to be one of his very finest. —Lanea Stagg The Victory Theatre is located at 600 Main Street in downtown Evansville. Tickets begin at $16 (plus applicable fees) – Order Online at: www.evansvillephilharmonic. org or call 812-425-5050. Discounts on groups of 10 or more are available; see website for discount options. Are you between ages 18-39 & hit hard by the holiday cash crunch? Check out this outstanding offer: Register for Club 2030 which allows 20-30 somethings to get $10 best available seats to Classics or Pops concerts (limit 2 tickets per member per concert.) See website for details.

Broadway at the Centre

presents:

Are you wondering what the perfect gift for your Valentine might be - one that would really make the night a once-in-a-lifetime experience?

T

he perfect plan is just two ticket purchases away. One of the longest running Broadway productions, A Chorus Line is coming to the Centre in downtown Evansville on February 20. This fabulous musical has been a hit sensation since 1975. The original production ran for 6,137 performances and collected numerous Tony Awards, including Best Musical. All these years later, it still spellbinds audiences throughout the world. Interestingly, this brilliant musical highlights the unrecognized cast members of musicals - the dedicated dancers. The plot revolves around Zach, a hard-driving director who, along with his assistant choreographer Larry puts the dancers through a series of grueling rehearsals as they audition for a chorus line. It’s an exhausting process. As Zach narrows down the candidates, he insists that they reveal personal details about their lives so he can understand their motivation. The finalists must then explain their reasons for wanting to be put through such daily torture just to be under-appreciated on stage. Everyone feels uncomfortable expressing why they are so desperate to make it as a dancer. Predictably, this process opens up a lot of wounds. As each character unloads their emotional baggage, the drama reaches a fever pitch. In fact, the show won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, a rare achievement for a musical. Based on the phenomenal reaction to the dramatic elements of the production, it wasn’t long before Hollywood got involved. In 1985, a film adaption directed by Richard

Attenborough and starring Michael Douglas as Zach was released. Many in the industry felt that the musical would not translate to the big screen. But while not entirely memorable, the movie generally fared well with critics (though some felt that all Attenborough did was film the stage production) and received several Golden Globe and Oscar nominations. Of course, the songs are what everyone truly remembers - and why A Chorus Line continues to pack theaters nearly 40 years after its debut. The timeless, Marvin Hamlischcomposed soundtrack includes “I Hope I Get It,” “I Can Do That,” “Sing,” “One” and “What I Did for Love.” All these are beloved songs to Broadway enthusiasts. The original 1975 Broadway cast recording has sold millions of copies across the world. But even as recently as 2010, the London Theatre Orchestra & Cast released a recording that did well. A Chorus Line is not just another Broadway musical; it is a chance of a lifetime and a chance for you to make a lasting Valentine’s Day impression. Your Valentine will say “Thank you, thank you, thank you!” —Lydia Parsons (New Tech Institute)

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. For ticket information, please visit www.ticketmaster.com. The Centre is located at 715 Locust Street in downtown Evansville.

Community Calendar

I

n response to the community who has supported them for 9 years, Tracy Zeller Jewelry has created something to make the community as strong as the multi-faceted stones they sell. As of January 15th, the Tracy Zeller Community Calendar has been up and running. The calendar was started on the idea that it would help event sponsors and planners foster and coordinate successful events for non-profit organizations, schools, churches and other organizations in the tri-state area. An amiable mission indeed, but this is an idea galvanized by a history of supporting hundreds of such events throughout the tri-state since the store’s opening. The inspiration for which was their “Live to Give” philosophy, and they have stuck to it. The community calendar is a direct result of their forward thinking and notable passion for their community. With easy navigation, users on the site will be able to view upcoming events, receive notices when an event is posted that they have particular interest in and also upload to the e-calendars and social media. Events are listed in multiple, easily understood categories based on their purpose and subject matter. Among the many benefits of the calendar, perhaps the greatest, is that it will act as an irrigation system feeding resources directly and more efficiently to local organizations, making them grow and ultimately flourish. —Nick Durcholz Visit the calendar at www.tzcalendar.com.

enna Citrus is a blooming, young artist and currently a student at the University of Southern Indiana majoring in Art and Business. She responded to our call for local talent and promises to be one to keep an eye on in the local art scene.

News4U (N4U): Tell us about the types of art you create and your involvement

N4U: Do you have any other projects in the works? Will they be available for the public to see and where? JC: Right now I’m working on a self-portrait project and a display for Lightmares that will be in a pop-up show called “Fresh Meat” by The Arts Council of Doom on the 16th of February at Inman’s Picture Framing (5625 Vogel Road) from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Friday, the 15th of February, Lightmares is playing a show at Penny Lane Coffee House downtown. My largest ongoing project is on flickr. I am doing something akin to a 365 day, photo journalism project but I am doing it for 10,000 images. Each image is the capture of a moment of human existence. There is a story behind each image, and if you combine those images, there is a huge snap-shot of my life. I started this project off because I had trouble remembering what I had done the month before. But now, I can take a look at my images and see exactly what I was writing about or photographing. This can be seen by navigating to www.flickr.com/ jennacitrus and clicking on the photo set to your right labeled ‘10,000 Part II.’

N4U: What do you have planned for the

on photography. Another favorite type of art is splatter painting on clothing. The Arts Council of Doom is a great group that I’ve been a part of for about 6 months. A show that I was in with them was between The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana and The Arts Council of Doom (TACO Doom). Each member that participated showcased 3 of their works in the Bower-Suhrheinrich Foundation Gallery at the Arts Council.

JC: In the future, I plan to create a museum/

Jenna Citrus (JC): I create many different types of visual art with an emphasis

N4U: You’re involved with a local music group in a unique way. How so? JC: I am in the band Lightmares. We are an electronic band, as well as a solo

project for Justin Sala. I contribute to the band with my photographic capabilities and by filming for our music videos. We have also created our own album The Sun Dances which was released December 15th 2012. Each of our CDs is handprinted with our artwork. The cases have been splatter painted by us and a wallet-photo print is included in each album. We can be found at www.facebook. com/LIGHTMAR3S with links to our newest creations; music and visual. The CD can be purchased online or at Penny Lane, Heirloom Records, Abyss Co. and The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana.

People could create 2 and 3 dimensional works on every surface of this building and have the knowledge that they participated in a large-scale art project and that some piece of their contribution will remain. —Julie Buente

soundboard Jason Lee McKinney

J

ason Lee McKinney’s musical career has seen more than its share of ups and downs. From early success to heartbreak and back again, the 38-year-old Evansville native can’t say the ride has been dull. As the driving force behind two bands that scored major record deals, he knows the feeling of being just a hit song away from the big time. He also knows how elusive that dream really is; life tends to kick back sometimes when the stars seem ready to align. In 2006, just as McKinney and his band mates in the Cheap Trick-influenced Lost Anthem were recording a promising new album with famed producer Tommy Sims, the lights went out. Tragedy struck not once but twice in succession. First, McKinney’s father succumbed to cancer. Then, his wife of 14 years filed for divorce. The cumulative effect of these events sent McKinney into a tailspin that once righted, set him on a whole new path in both his life and his music. Though he grew up in Evansville and still considers it a second home, McKinney has spent the last 13 years in Nashville – the obvious place for a talented singer/songwriter to put down roots. But after suffering the loss of his father and his wife, McKinney stopped playing music. He went to school and tried to live a typical life, completely removed from the industry. Slowly, he started to rediscover the joy of music by listening to his dad’s record collection – weathered voices like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, John Prine and Leon Russell. McKinney’s creative muse returned. He plotted a change in direction that resulted in the 2009 solo release Strangers, Stages, Cheap Hotels. Two tracks from the album, “Firefly” and “Middle of Nowhere,” received national rotation on TCN (The Country Network). Along with the new sound which touched on old school country but also referenced new stars like Keith Urban, McKinney recognized that his business approach also had to change. “The days are gone of being able to say that you just want to play guitar and sing. You can do that, but you’re going to be in your basement by yourself. You have to figure out how to do things cheaply but professionally,” he explains. With an MBA earned over the last several years and a doctorate nearing completion, McKinney is more than qualified to handle the financial side

of his career. His creativity too, has reached a peak as the painful experiences of the past have come flooding out in song. Everything is coming together for his new album, Troubadours, Vagabonds and Thieves. Musically, the 13 songs reflect a bluesy, gritty, swampy sound that seems entirely natural to McKinney. A record release party is set for February 8 at Mojo’s BoneYard here in Evansville. While the response to McKinney’s solo material in America has been favorable, nothing can compare to the rabid European fans. “My band headlined a country music festival in Poland over the summer which was really fun. We’re negotiating to go back, because the people were incredible – over 100,000, and they really connected with the music,” says McKinney. Still, he is philosophical about measuring success by crowd numbers or sales figures; it’s hardly surprising considering the twists and turns that have led him to his current position in life and music. “Success is subjective,” McKinney says. “I’m a music business professor at Vincennes. A lot of my students see me as being successful because I’ve got a record deal. It’s all relative, because that and five bucks will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.” —Thomas Ellis

Beck'’s Sapphire

Kona Big Wave Golden Ale

Two Brothers Outlaw IPA

Christy Moore • 4.5 Christy Moore • 5

Back to the islands with the Kona Brewing Co. This beer captures the golden color of the sun. You could almost close your eyes and imagine yourself under the banyan trees amidst the artists in Lahaina. The nose is very hoppy but the taste is a lot less bitter than you would expect. This may quite possibly be the best blended beer that incorporates hops that I have sampled thus far.

Jabez Martinez • 3

The beer pours a golden color and I had high hopes for it. You could smell the pine, some flowers and even some grapefruit. I guess I was expecting something more on the lighter side but it was okay. The flavor matched the aroma but it was just mediocre. I was expecting something light and crisp that you would drink at the beach by the appearance of the bottle.

Nick D • 3.5

This one lives up to its name, pouring the most vibrant gold hue. The barley aroma is much bolder than in most ales, I hope it is reflected in the taste too. The flavor is very interesting with a yeasty, earthiness. The beer has a taste which disappears from the palate almost instantaneous and finishes squeaky clean. This is an ideal summer brew, a fantastic flavor presence but also light and refreshing.

76 | February

The color is a very transparent amber. German sapphire hops welcome you with a pleasant citrus passage across the taste buds. It favors a sweeter direction than your classic hops beer, and in doing so captures a better long lasting consistency that maintains a good presence all the way to the end.

Jabez Martinez • 4

I was expecting a darker beer by the looks of

the bottle but it was a clear, pale lager. It had 6 % ABV which was nice but I couldn’t tell it. Usually beer with bumped up alcohol content suffers in taste. It did have your standard Beck’s flavor but it seemed a little more refined. It was very sweet with some breadyness to it. I am not a Beck’s fan but this one was pretty good and will try it again.

Nick D • 4.5

This beer, one I have been looking forward to trying, pours very pale. The aroma is invigorating and the barley seems to stand out more than the hops. It comes off as a lager by smell. The taste is where those special sapphire hops shine though. They initially hit the palate with a punch then fade into a smooth, nutty flavor. The aftertaste is subtle and pleasant. As with Beck’s flagship beer, Sapphire maintains premium style, taste and overall quality. Sehr gut.

Christy Moore • 4

This potent potion bites you back. Of course I’ll never want to test this theory but the taste makes me think of what it would be like to lick a rugged biker that you see in the movies. Weeks of road dirt caked on the skin, cured in the overbearing smoke house of an old western style saloon, gun powder accenting the ashy hue of the leather hide. Resembling the bounty hunter in the Nick Cage master piece “Raising Arizona”.

Jabez Martinez • 3.5

This beer had a yellow/amber color with a strong hops aroma, which I expected. It had the usual citrus and pine flavors that were backed by a strong hops flavor. I am not an IPA fan but this one wasn’t bad. It had a medium body to it, but was crisp and didn’t coat you tongue with hops.

Nick D • 4

This brew sports a striking peach hue that is slightly cloudy. The aroma of the hops does not shock the nostrils like most IPA’s, instead it enters them smoothly and gently. There is no hindrance of the intense hop flavor IPA drinkers love in this brew and yet, the smoothness in which it is delivered is uncanny. This beer is one of the only truly accessible IPAs I’ve ever had. Two Brothers does not disappoint.

Great Crescent Aurora Lager

Jabez Martinez • 4

This is a cloudy yellow beer with decent carbonation. I always like to see us review Hoosier breweries and I will keep my eye out for this one. I would describe this as a ‘lighter’ lager flavored beer with a mild, sweet hops flavor. Having the beer in pint cans was also good and I hope I will find other styles the brewery has to offer.

Nick D • 2

Christy Moore • 3

This beer builds a towering head of foam, Appearance is slightly cloudy gold. When it settles you’re left with a bitter hodge-podge of grapefruit citrus overtones and bitter hoppy bite. As much as I wanted to vote for the Indiana team, I’ve never heard of Aurora Indiana and I don’t expect this beverage to be the item that puts it on the map.

This brew pours a pale yellow. The aroma to this one is very unappealing. It is an unpleasant funk that I hope is not reflected in the taste. The taste is not quite as unpleasant as the smell, but goodness it is strange. It has a salty flavor with a hint of soapiness. Yes, you read that right, a soapy flavor. Even with keeping as open of a mind a possible, I struggle to find anything good about this one. It tastes like it was brewed in someone’s bathtub.

Random Beer Facts! •Beer is the second most popular beverage in the world, coming in behind tea. •To get rid of the foam at the top of beer (the head), stick your fingers in it. •Bavariastill defines beer as a staple food. •To keep your beer glass or mug from sticking to your bar napkin, sprinkle a little salt on the napkin before you set your glass down. •The oldest known written recipe is for beer. •The powers that be at Guinness say that a pint of beer is lifted about ten times, and each time about 0.56 ml is lost in a beer drinker’s facial hair. That’s a lot of wasted beer! •Tossing salted peanuts in a glass of beer makes the peanuts dance. Compiled from www.beerfestboots.com

Beautiful Creatures Warner Bros. Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich), a restless teen in a small Southern town, develops a mysterious attraction to the new girl at school, Lena Duchaness (Alice Englert). Lena is a private girl, so at first he struggles to ‘figure her out.’ After he learns about her powerful supernatural heritage, he fights to save her from an inescapable fate that threatens us all. Lena’s true nature, and fate, will be decided at her ominous sixteenth birthday. Is she a Light Witch or a Dark Witch? If she can’t self-discover and fast, others may decide for her. Dark Witches like her mother, Sarafine (Emma Thompson) want her to join a plot to destroy the human race. The xenophobic townspeople one by one turn against her. After she becomes isolated from the dark world around her, why wouldn’t she want to destroy it? Beautiful Creatures the motion picture is based on book number one of four in the best-selling series, Caster Chronicles by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. Writer/Director Richard LaGravenese is probably best known for The Fisher King (1991) and A Little Princess (1995). Most excellent cast members Emma Thompson (Harry Potter), Jeremy Irons (Eragon), and Viola Davis (The Help) provide a very exciting performance potential. Expect to get more than just another teen romance out of this potentially impactful film.

Warm Bodies Summit Entertainment “He’s still dead but he’s getting warmer.” For the zombie named just ‘R’ life is... just over. He can’t remember his name. He doesn’t know why he lives in an airport. He can’t even talk. There’s only one thing left that connects him to a world of purpose: a heart. After R chows down on her boyfriend, Julie (Teresa Palmer) captures the young zombie’s heart. The sensitive R (Nicholas Hoult) decides not to have her for dessert. Instead, he protects her, or maybe he’s just saving her for later? Either way, R’s passion for life is catching fire and it’s starting to spread among the other zombies. They’re even starting to get their voices back, but some of the more dangerous ones called “Bonies” are beyond saving, and pose a threat to humans and zombies alike. General Grigio (John Malkovich) is Julie’s father and after Julie is apparently kidnapped by R, he’s coming after them. Can R and the others transform into “less-than-lifeless” before his troops arrive to kill them all - again? Warm Bodies the motion picture was inspired by Isaac Marion’s novel of the same name. He wrote the novel after a positive response to his internet short story I am a Zombie Filled with Love. The film was written and directed by Johnathan Levine (50/50). Levine says during an interview with MTV, “... it’s a very character-driven story ... that’s what I really want people to take away from it, and at the same time, we want people to know it’s going to be fun and unique.”

cinema new releases

Frankenweenie Walt Disney

Frankenweenie is ALIIVE… again! It was originally a Disney short film that was supposed to come out in 1984. Instead, Disney fired Tim Burton and shelved the film after test screenings proved it was too scary for children. The short film is available uncensored in certain DVD and Blu-ray releases of The Nightmare Before Christmas. The story centers around an only child, Victor Frankenstein. Normally Victor spends his time in the attic, alone with his dog Sparky. He seems content but his father talks him into trying baseball. After Victor hits his first home run, Sparky chases down the home run ball right into oncoming traffic. Victor watches as his dog is put down by what looks to be a ‘64 Impala. Fear not. The scientist in Victor takes over and he creates an elaborate experiment in the attic to bring Sparky back to life. It works! “Big” problems ensue when the other neighborhood kids find out about it. To win the science fair, the other kids try to duplicate Victor’s experiment using their own deceased pets. Because they used science for gain and not love, their experiments turn into actual monsters.

Looper

Tri-Star Pictures

Good news: time travel is invented in the year 2074. Bad news: the mob controls it. It’s only used to send targets back in time to be assassinated because it’s impossible to get rid of a body in 2074. That’s where Joe (Gordon-Levitt) comes in. He lives in the year 2044 and when a hooded and bound target shows up at a predetermined time and place, he blows them away as fast as they appear. The mob doesn’t like to leave loose ends. So, these hitmen like Joe are sent back from 2074 to 2044 to themselves and like all the other targets, are assassinated by themselves as soon as they appear. That’s why they’re called a “Looper.” Sometimes “closing a loop” on one’s self goes wrong and the target runs. That’s when the 2044 mob comes after both of you to make sure the loop is closed. After the 2074 Joe (Willis) escapes the closing of his loop by knocking out the 2044 Joe, the two of them struggle with disparate but equal destinies. The effect is pretty cool on-screen. 2074 Joe is trying to save the only thing that meant anything to him in his 60-ish years, his wife. 2044 Joe is trying to save himself. The message that the filmmakers send when they close the loop on this story is nothing short of beautiful, but with the exponential plotting mistakes, the final delivery for me was full of “Loopholes.”

LOCAL BAND SPOTLI G HT

Prowler

ABOUT THE BAND: Our name is Prowler. We are a five piece hard rock/metal band from Evansville. We’ve been hanging around for a few years some-what under the radar playing the music we love for the sake of well, playing the music we love. Prowler is headed by the lovely and dangerous Mina Fedora, something unheard of in this area up until now. She can scream like a banshee or serenade your senses with an elegant and beautiful voice. WHAT THEY COVER/DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE: Our original style is best compared as similar to early aggressive/melodic Metallica smashed together with a Godsmack type groove, topped off with female vocals. We also have an extensive range of cover songs that we love to play as well. Flip your radio to 103GBF and listen for a few hours and you’ll here most of what we play. Songs ranging from “Another Thing Comin’” by Judas Priest, to a few by each of the Big 4 (Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer, Metallica), Avenged Sevenfold and Bullet For My Valentine, to “Love Bites” from Halestorm to “Fully Alive” by Flyleaf and anything in between. THEIR INFLUENCES: Metallica, Godsmack, Judas Priest, Anthrax, Black Sabbath, Avenged Sevenfold, Megadeth, Flyleaf, Bullet for my Valentine and Halestorm. WHERE YOU CAN CATCH THEIR PERFORMANCES: We have played bars like the Southside in Boonville, Tequila Sheilas in Grayville, IL , but our stomping ground is Lanhuck’s. We will have all of our dates posted on Facebook. Our first show back from a short break will be February 2nd at Lanhuck’s starting at 10:30 p.m. Check us out on Facebook...(Prowler.Evansville). cd reviews Alcoa

Bone & Marrow Bridge Nine Records

3 out of 5 As the lead screamer for hardcore band Defeater, Derek Archambault has occasionally given his scorched throat a break - most notably on 2011’s Empty Days & Sleepless Nights which featured several acoustic tracks. The success of those songs encouraged him to revisit a solo project conceived over 10 years ago. Named after a Tennessee town, Alcoa represents Archambault’s love for singer-songwriters like Johnny Cash and Gram Parsons. But while the country-tinged sound may reference these icons and the lyrics touch on the obligatory sour relationships, cigarettes, whiskey and death, there seems to be something missing: a voice to match the gravity of it all. Archambault can scream with the best of them, but his singing voice simply flat-lines. Mid-tempo tracks “Keep Track/Lose Track,” “Lucky Me” and “Untitled Three” actually come off a bit like the Gin Blossoms – all competent 90’s era radio rock. The remaining eight tracks trudge along at a snail’s pace, adorned with banjo, fiddle, pedal steel guitar and organ; the chord progressions seem indistinguishable. When Archambault finally injects a little passion into his vocals near the end of penultimate track “Untitled Three,” it’s a little too late. Devoted Defeater fans will probably love this album, and the songs might sound great strummed by a campfire, but ultimately, it wants for a heartbeat.

Britt Nicole Gold Capitol Records

4 out of 5 Christian music has changed quite dramatically over the years. Once a piano-based call to worship, the genre has morphed into a pop format; rising stars like Jamie Grace now sit comfortably beside Colbie Callait and Sara Bareilles on the radio. Of this new generation, 2013 Grammy nominee Britt Nicole may be the most pop Christian singer yet. The North Carolina native has been recording and scoring hits since 2007. One listen to Gold, and it’s clear why. The sophisticated production work uses all the tricks of the trade to sound contemporary, even mixing in a bit of dubstep. Vocally, Nicole’s strong delivery holds up. From track to track, she shifts accordingly, belting it out one moment like Kelly Clarkson or Adele, scaling it back to a whisper the next. Somehow, her voice never gets overwhelmed by the flood of synthesizers and programmed beats.

88 | February

2013 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Her current single “Gold” sets the mood. Lyrically, it reads more like selfhelp than worship. Over a hyper-melodic backdrop, Nicole implores the bullied and the insecure to take their place in the sun – “it’s your time to shine.” Musically, it could easily fit on a Katy Perry album. The ballad “All This Time” is a distant cousin of Leona Lewis’ monumental hit, “Bleeding Love,” while “Amazing Life” gives Ke$ha a run for her money. All of it makes Amy Grant’s brief pop dalliance 20 years ago sound quaint by comparison.

Lexie Roth Lexie Roth Self-released

4 out of 5 Daughter of legendary guitarist Arlen Roth (performed with the likes of Simon & Garfunkel and Bob Dylan), Lexie Roth does a remarkable imitation of alternative darling Neko Case. From the minor key western guitar to the lazy, sultry vocals, the similarities are both striking and flattering. One Long Blink, her debut album, received attention as far as Japan; Lexie Roth proves it was no fluke. Opening track “Lost Memory” lives up to its name. The hypnotic guitar is deep in the mix, swirling below the surface. Roth’s reverb-tinged vocals hover above the dark chord progression. As the song winds down, she harmonizes beautifully with herself; all is forgotten. Even more wonderfully dreary, “Stay or Go” takes its time, slowly building on another succession of minor chords. Again, the guitar is subtle to the point of nearly disappearing. The space it leaves is unsettling in the best way. Roth weaves her black and blue words in and out of the emptiness, always in full control despite the gnawing despair. “I Wanna Run” is another delightful downer with the intriguing couplet ‘I killed you off and you came back / you wrote me off and I wrote you back.’ I suppose a more original sound might be in order for Roth at some point, but dad clearly taught her well. No need to write her off any time soon.

Tomahawk

Oddfellows Ipecac Recordings

4 out of 5 Who would have guessed that the little guy pseudorapping and clowning his way through Faith No More’s epic “Epic,” would turn out to be such a revered experimental musician capable of tackling everything from opera to improvisation? Ok, so maybe you did. I stand corrected. Even so, the scope of Mike Patton’s discography is surprising; recent releases have included Mondo Cane (a set of Italian pop songs performed with an orchestra) and a film score. Never one to stay idle, Patton is back with Oddfellows, a new album by side project Tomahawk. After a five year gap in recordings (reportedly spent discovering the “many truths and non-truths of the universe”), Patton, Duane Denison (Jesus Lizard) and John Stanier (Helmet) sound rejuvenated; the weirdness is in full force. “Choke Neck” and the title track get dragged through the muck of sludgy distortion with Patton commentating from a distant planet – or inside a drain pipe. “A Thousand Eyes” is equally slow and deliberate but dispenses with the fuzz in favor a ghostly ring. Patton’s vocals are sleep-inducing like an evil lullaby. “Rise Up Dirty Waters” is all spooky jazz with intermittent blasts of Black Sabbath on speed. Come to think of it, Oddfellows isn’t that odd. Maybe the truly strange thing is that these guys waited so long to get back together. —Thomas Ellis

cd sidebar Citadel Besieged Creation/Damnation Gothic Records

Two surly childhood friends, Adrien Jeffries and Tim Hall have reunited to make an offer to the Scandinavian metal gods. Despite semipassionate vocals and fairly weak percussion, Citadel musically manages to sweep the listener away on a jet black, winged Clydesdale for a dark voyage. The lyrics hit all the epic subject matter, there are hollow, lanky bass lines and guitar that segues from gutsy chugging to slow rising wails. Early metal influences are definitely present giving the tracks a dirty, unrefined sound that works.

Heaven’s Cry

Food For Thought Substitute Prosthetic Records

This album is a rich, complex brand of metal punctuated by the nasally, shrill call to arms of frontman Pierre St-Jean. Formed in the 90’s, Heaven’s Cry is French-Canadian prog-metal at it’s most expansive. This re-release boasts fare for vagabonds, forming exotic, endless landscapes in the listeners mind, allowing them to explore the sound-scape with a futuristic ATV. Passionate ballads, blistering, rush ‘em rockers and funky, facesmashers are all present. This is metal to Dune by. Nerdy nastiness.

Hell or Highwater Begin Again

Pavement Entertainment Hell or Highwater offers a notable contemporary hard rock sound with an injection of melody and soul. Unlike other new hard rock bands the vocals don’t sound stressed or forced. The instrumentation uses the usual new hard rock sound as a foundation but builds upon it with unique melody direction and chord progression. The music pulls from elements of many rock sub-genres. The lyrics are well-written, some tracks utilize storytelling. Begin Again is a solid new rock album straight from the OC.

Anarchy Reigns

W

elcome to a third-person fighter that defies logic, morals and wipes its rear end with shreds of political correctness. I have not encountered such an eclectic, contradicted, frantic and quasi-erotic game ever before. In a futuristic, post-apocalyptic world of mutation, disease, war…You get the picture, and man’s only saving grace seems to be nano-technology and machines. Sound familiar? Anyways, as the player you make a consistent decision throughout the game (single-player) to choose the ‘White Side’ or the ‘Black Side.’ Depending on which side you choose determines which weave of the two intertwining plotlines you travel and what character you play as. Online multiplayer for two to 16 players is also available. The major protagonists are practitioners of the ‘cybrid’ arts, essentially humans with robotic additions using close-quarter energy weapons to the tune of various hand-to-hand combat styles. Nikolai is the big and brutish type but also the brain, Leo is the perfectly angular badass with a soft side and Sasha is the empathetic vixen with the poise of a ballerina but the moves of an assassin stripper. The environments in this game are very small and crudely designed. Enemy design is just as crude. Clichés run rampant, the only African-American in the entire game is a pimp and all of the sound is campy and of poor quality. The main and side missions appear only when you reach a certain number of points. So, I often just wondered around killing groups of the same enemies over and over again, until the next mission appeared. There is creative design in the main characters. They are edgy with intriguing styles and weapons that reflect their prospective personalities. The gameplay has positives too. The action is savage, acrobatic and relentless. Excitement builds inside you from intense battles and from continuing on just to see what kind of strange being you will encounter next…then brutally defeating them. Overall, this game is somewhat entertaining and even interesting but its poor quality and clichés make it really awkward. It doesn’t know what it is. It is anarchy.

The melodic trail has continued through a broad array of players including Jeff Harmon, Bookie Buchenburger, Monte Skelton, Charlene Blay, Stef Scaggiari and Jim Ryan. The House Concert Series is the gold standard of great Jazz in this area. Harry and Linda George are the gracious hosts (since 2007) who usher their willing guests into this monthly musical excursion. Linda greets each guest at the door of the Casabella with a warm, welcoming smile. Harry is the emcee who knows everyone and will give those in attendance the down-low on the music that is to come. Person after person notices that special ‘something’ in the air. As the concert begins, there is no distraction that will corrupt the performance. This is a credit to the passion of the audience and an acknowledgement of the respect given to the musicians and their performance. The House Concert Series is about to begin its sixth season. The concerts usually happen on the third Sunday of the month. There is a small cover of ten dollars. The entire amount collected goes to the musicians. It is a small price to pay for such an extraordinary afternoon. After almost every show, Harry and Linda extend their hospitality to the audience to bask in the glow of such a splendid evening.
