Back in 1992, three kids from Poway, California formed a band (much like plenty of other kids around that time) and since, their diets consisted of punk rock, skating and goofing around. Except unlike most kids, these three guys made it their career and 20 years on, BLINK-182 are living the punk rock dream, back with a vengeance after a short hiatus and the release of their new album ‘NEIGHBOURHOODS’. However, for vocalist/guitarist TOM DELONGE punk rock wasn’t enough and in 2002 he launched a footwear brand with bandmate Mark Hoppus that would marry his love of music with his love of extreme sports, long before the more established brands caught on to the power of the riff. MACBETH FOOTWEAR has worked with artists such as Mike Dirnt from GREEN DAY, Frank Iero from MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, Hunter Burgan from AFI and extreme sports legends Matt Hensley, Anton Gunnarsson and Damien Wills so when Tom dropped into Attitude HQ we grilled him on what’s next on the platter for Macbeth and of course, about Blink…

Tell us about Macbeth Footwear, and how it began? “I started Macbeth Footwear almost a decade ago and it’s been a really long, slow build. It was one of the first companies really influenced by the lifestyle of music, which was pretty vague when we started but now it’s not. Music is so infused into everyone’s lives with iTunes but when we started that wasn’t around. I think we do a really good job at celebrating that culture by not being just another action sports brand.” “Macbeth always wanted to celebrate alternative culture, punk rock and urban culture. We have vegan shoes and we work closely with artists. We’ve also had professional surfers and skaters with us the whole time, but that’s not our first priority. What we always wanted Macbeth to be was one roof where you find a lot of classics under. When I grew up in bands and skateboarding I always wore a Converse shoe, or an Adidas soccer shoe or Vans slip-on; Macbeth is all those things in one place… except without David Beckham.” We love that you offer an alternative to most brands, like your dedication to offering a vegan shoe, are you vegan

yourself? “I’m not vegan but a lot of the bands we work with have members who are, so that quickly became something that we needed to have. It was something that a lot of artists were very passionate about.” How do you choose the musicians that you wanna work with? “We work with artists who are friends, or who we think are cool. We don’t sell a lot of shoes because we have a particular artist working with us, I mean, we have Mike Dirnt from Green Day with us and he’s amazing, but it’s not like that we chase these guys down and put Green Day on everything we do even though Green Day is far bigger than our shoe company, y’know. We’re just excited that Mike wants to be part of what we’re doing because he cares about fashion and he’s a sneaker freak. So he gets to design some really cool things that we don’t sell a trillion pairs of but we really get to explore that canvas with another artist, so that makes it fun. We like to work with guys that we can communicate with in spirit.” You’ve worked with some pretty big names in extreme sports too, right? “We’ve always made skate shoes in the past, with pros like Matt Hensley, Pat Duffy and surfers like Nathaniel Curran. The Matt Hensley shoe has been massive for us. Vans did this shoe called the Half-Cab,

shoe, and it’s kind of a version of that, which is cool as they’re both legendary skateboarders. Matt’s a musician too, he’s in [veteran punk band] Flogging Molly, so we get two for one with him.” What’s hot at Macbeth at the moment? “I’m wearing a controversial shoe right now. It’s like a Nike free running shoe with a Macbeth shoe on top. My friends say it looks like a Skecher and I’m like ‘you assholes!’. It just slips on, it’s like a sock and a running shoe and it’s so comfortable. It’s the biggest shoe I’ve worn in a long time, I usually wear something much smaller but I find it very comfortable. It’s like karate ninja slip-on shoe but with a real sole, so when you walk through piss and vomit you’ll be okay. You take a normal karate slipper and walk through piss and vomit, you’re fucked, but with ours, it’s made for life.” So, what’s next for the Macbeth empire? “We might be getting into boots. The big argument will be between doing a Red Wing style motorcycle boot or if I can convince them to do something like a steel toe Doctor Marten boot, which no one really wears any more but I still think they’re rad. Maybe that’s the ‘80s or late-’90s kid in me that loves those. It makes me feel nostalgic.

Maybe we’ll do both, we’ll see.” As for Blink, how did it feel getting back in the saddle and putting out a new album after all this time? “It’s hard. Everyone has their own opinion on the new album. It’s much more advanced, but I think the jump on the last record [2003’s ‘Blink-182’] was a quantum leap for us and people hail that as a very special moment in our career. But what I think we did on this album far surpassed that. People expected a certain standard on this one, whereas on the last one we beat the standard they expected, so if I had to guess, with all our side-projects [ed – Tom formed Angels & Airwaves after leaving Blink in 2005, while bassist Mark and drummer Travis Barker formed +44], people were thinking ‘you better write a good record, you fuckers!’.” What’s next for you guys? “Well, I’m interested in pretty progressive music and I tried to include as much as I could on ‘Neighbourhoods’. The other guys won’t let me put synthesisers everywhere, but I would if I could. We should do something electronic, that would be fun. I mean, we know how to do it. Whether the fans like it, I don’t know? I just want to do things that are different. I just want to create. I just want to spread my wings and fly.”

“Fashion is an art in itself. You’re like a walking art installation”

Words by Louise Brown. Photos by Oran Tarjan. Hair and Make Up by Laura Glover.

You don't wanna mess with Megan Massacre. The feisty vixen burst onto our TV screens last year as a progeny of Miami Ink star Ami James on his new show New York Ink. Best known for her colourful tattoos, as well as her colourful outbursts, Megan quickly became the star of the show. The Philadelphia girl started tattooing in 2004 and hasn't looked back since, but when she's not scratching her art onto skin, she's scratching as one half of electro DJ combo, Letz Massacre with her boyfriend Joe Letz of goth/industrial legends Combichrist. Never one to miss a good opportunity, Megan jumped at the chance to come over to Europe to ply her tattoo trade while Joe's on tour, and while her BF's band prepared to play in Brighton, Megan met up with the Attitude crew on the beach to talk about art, style and selling sofas.

How did you get into tattooing? “Ever since I was two years old I was drawing and as I got older I learnt how to paint, how to sculpt, do calligraphy, you name it – if it was to do with art I made sure I learnt how to do it and when I became exposed to tattooing I thought it was really cool, it was an art medium that I wanted to learn. “When I was 14 I went to a local tattoo shop and I asked them what I needed to do to learn how to become a tattooist and they said I had to get an apprenticeship. So, I said, ‘well, how do I get an apprenticeship?’, and they were like, ‘give us $4000!’. I was crushed, because when you’re 14-years-old $4000 is a life’s saving. “So, I gave up on that dream, but when I was 18-years-old I got the opportunity to try again. It fell in my lap really, I had just graduated high school and I worked this awful job selling furniture at a department store and my friend who I worked with said, ‘screw this, I wanna get a job as a bodypiercer, can you give a me ride there after work?’ “I went in and was just hanging out in the front and she was doing her thing in the back and she told the owner of the shop that I

could draw really well. So, the guy asked me to prove it. He asked me to draw a couple of things, I think one was an evil butterfly and another was a name in a tribal style, just these really cliche tattoo ideas. He was actually really impressed and asked me if I’d ever done a tattoo before - I said ‘no’, so he asked me if I’d like to, (and of course I did!). So, he said ‘okay, we’re gonna do one right now!’. I thought to myself, should I do it? But it might have been my only opportunity, so I thought I had to try... “He set everything up for me and had me tattoo the apprentice’s leg and I felt so bad because he just had crap all over his legs from where they let everyone practice on him. The guy sat right there and showed me what to do. I was so nervous and shaking but by the end I got really into it. The owner told me I’d done really well and offered me an apprenticeship. I quit my job and started tattooing and haven’t stopped since.” How did you land a job at New York Ink? “I had been tattooing for a long time and some of the guys, Ami and Tim [Hendricks], from the shop got to wondering about who would be a good female tattoo

artist to have on the show and I guess my name came up. They’d seen my work and thought it would be cool to have me. When they asked me I was more than honoured and wanted to take up the opportunity.” How would you describe your tattoo style? “The difference between me and most other tattoo artists is that most artists find a niche style, whether it be black and grey portraits, or new school colour. Usually tattoo artists have one style that they really love to do, but the thing is, I love to do all of those things. I go through phases, I’ve been tattooing for almost nine years, so I’ve had a lot of time to hone my personal style and figure out what I like best - but it changes all of the time. “Right now, I’m into really bright, colourful tattoos, a little bit of new school but a little bit of realism at the same time. I love my tattoos to pop, look really three-dimensional, and have a lot of detail to them. I love to do something realistic but with a traditional border, or some new school background to it, something that is a combination of styles - I think it’s really fun as I get to experiment with all sorts of styles in one tattoo.”

Megan wears: (LEFT) Kill Star “Inverted Cross Women’s Vest” £17.99 // Penthouse “Cleo Leopard Mule” £57.99 // PVC Zip Leggings £12.99 // Punky Pins “Rock N Roll 2 Finger Rings” £13.99 // Large Silver Cross Necklace £2.99 (was £9.99) (RIGHT) Bullet 69 “3 Row Conical Stud Belt” £12.99 // Iron Fist “Gold Star String Bikini” £34.99 // Jist “Anchor Capri Jeans” £25.99 /

How would you describe your fashion sense? “Just like my tattoo style, my fashion style changes as well. As you get older, or you move to different places, you get influenced by the things that are around you, and since moving to New York I’ve been inspired more by the high fashion style. I’m not a high fashion kinda girl, I come from a place where we all wore black and studs and people would call us goths and we’d dye our hair crazy and wear black lipstick. I still love all those things, but since moving to New York I’ve almost become a refined goth. “I’ve really become interested in wearing colour. Not even regular colour, but fluorescent colours, like blue and pink and orange all at the same time. I don’t really know where that came from, but I guess it has a lot to do with what is popular and trendy and what’s going on in the fashion world right now. Fashion is an art in itself. You’re like a walking art installation and you want to give people something really cool to look at. What brings you to a beach in Brighton? “I’m here in the UK right now, on tour with my boyfriend, Joey, who is the drummer for Combichrist. I decided to come along with him because five weeks is a long time to be away from your boyfriend and one of the greatest things about being a tattoo artist is being able to tattoo anywhere in the entire world. So, I brought all of my equipment, jumped on the tour bus and here I am, in Europe for the first time, tattooing and having a great time.” New York Ink are gearing up to do their second season, which will air in the UK later this year. Megan promises “some great tattoos, drama and some unexpected surprises”. Keep checking www.MeganMassacre.com for more details.

“It’s great being an Alt Girl in London” Attitude Clothing are pleased to introduce Miss Betts as our feisty new columnist and blogger. This bolshie beauty is a designer and model living in London who loves nothing more than taking on a mosh pit in her Iron Fist stilettos. She’s joined the ranks of AC Magazine to give you a window into her weird and wonderful life as an Alt Girl taking on our capital city. Miss Betts will also be reporting back from the best gigs and tours, to give you lucky folk an account of how the bands went down, what she wore to knock ‘em dead, and what really happens backstage at a rock show. Ham sandwich anyone? So without further a do, take it away Miss B… I’d been parading around in my new Abbey Dawn spike-encrusted wedges and had so far attracted an assortment of looks ranging from awe to sheer terror. It was only a matter of time before a boot related remark was made. A particularly inquisitive man, standing next to me at the bus stop, was the first brave soul to pipe up “Intimidating boots you’re wearing there… slightly unnecessary” “Unnecessary?” “Is there really any need to wear boots covered in spikes” “So, tell me, how exactly are YOUR shoes equipped to competently fend off the decomposing, brain lusting un-dead during a zombie apocalypse?” “…well… uh…” I shot him a smug look and went back to my bus waiting position. It’s great being an alt girl in London.

As well as the accomplishment of upsetting random professional-type commuters with footwear that looks slightly like medieval weaponry, you also get to meet the most intriguing people, experience the most bizarre events, an abundance of diverse nightlife and the best music venues, which the most awesome bands clamber over each other to play. So clad in my finest urban uniforms, and armed with an arsenal of accessories, I’ll be taking on the best events, gigs and happenings and reporting back to you. Will At The Drive In cut the night up with a one armed scissor set of amazing or will Cedric be more concerned with sipping herbal tea on stage and rearranging the scaffolding à la Mars Volta? Will Andrew WK rock Hevy Fest so hard that the crowd descends into mass party overload before dissolving into an excess of

exhilaration induced nose-bleedingall-over-white-garment chaos?! You can find out all of this and more by reading about my social misadventures here in the Attitude Clothing Magazine. If you just can’t wait until the next issue, head on over to the Attitude Clothing blog where you will find all of the aforementioned, plus tips on dressing for urban combat, more zombie escape tactics and a plethora of other juicy bits including tales of the various other scrapes that I get into day to day. So come and say ‘Hi.’ I may bite, but I promise that you won’t reanimate. Catch Miss Betts’ column in every issue of the Attitude Clothing Magazine. In the meantime find her blog at: www.blog.attitudeclothing.co.uk

ATTITUDE CLOTHING MODEL COMPETITION 2012

On a rainy day in July, 5 winners made their way down an industrial looking road in East London on the look out for Murder Mile Studios. Four themed “Chambers” housing everything from a beautiful four poster bed and gothic chaise longue, to a clinical white room complete with a genuine 7ft steel mortuary table… enough to send shivers down your spine. This was to be the location of the Attitude Clothing Winners Shoot. It had taken a long time to get to this point. Well over 1600 people submitted their photos and put themselves up for public consumption. However only a handful of people could win and there was some seriously hot competition in every category making the competition a close one. Weeks of public voting and drama, as well as allegations of cheating amongst contestants prompted Attitude Clothing to move the competition away from Facebook and onto to a more secure platform. Harrison Ball, who won the Men’s Rockabilly category confesses “I had sort of given up on it, but next thing I know I’m getting an email saying I’d won! I thought it was a great thing to take the competition off of Facebook and base it on more than just pure ‘Likes’. There are all sorts of ‘Myspace Famous’ people out there who can get a million likes just from sharing but they don’t necessarily look that great in their pictures”. After much ado about nothing, the competition culminated in a jury submitting their votes in a closed ballot and finally we had our winners! Andy Nutter from Derby who won the Men’s Street and Skate category laughs “My girlfriend entered me without even telling me! She only told me because I was winning....I was shocked and a little bit embarrassed but it’s been such good fun”. “The whole experience has been brilliant” explains Jamie, winner of the

Punk and Gothic catergory. “It’s not what I expected at all, everyone’s been sound and it’s just been a really good laugh and a great day out”. “We were saying that we sort of expected stuck up model types who hadn’t had carbs in a week!” Admits Decaying Doll - winner of the Pin-up category. “So it’s quite nice to meet normal people just doing it for fun”. Some of you may notice the models may not directly reflect the winners list. Unfortunately Lila, (the model selected by the public to represent the Female Gothic and Punk category) no longer wished to take part.So after some deliberation, we decided at Attitude HQ that we would select an Attitude’s Choice winner. There had been calls for us to select winners earlier in the contest, so at this late stage, we decided this was the best way forward. We selected Vampira Passista, a 22 year old samba dancing trumpet player studying music and also working as a ‘Waitress Bunny’ at the Playboy Casino in London. Her vampy entry stood out to us from the start, complete with corset, bespoke vampire fangs and Mansonesque contact lenses. Sadly, our Women’s Street and Skate winner could not make the shoot on the day, which left us no time to replace her. This was a disappointment, but the show must go on! The 5 winners spent the day having their hair and make up done by top make up artist Laura Glover. Once they’d slipped into their outfits, they were shot by Attitude favourite Oran Tarjan, who’s worked with metal publications such as Terrorizer and Metal Hammer. We’ve selected our favourite shots of each of the models, and more can be seen on our Facebook page. We would like to thank everyone who took part in the contest, and look forward to starting our search for the next generation of models in 2013...
