Right after getting off at Yokogawa Station, which is about 5 minutes by JR train from Hiroshima Station, you will see a not-so-well-known but interesting place with an artistic and cultural atmosphere. Here and there you can find interesting wall paintings, which should be really instagrammable! There are many shops and stores, including galleries, stylish cafes, and izakayas. 從廣島站搭乘 JR 電車約 5 分鐘抵達橫川站，即可來到這個充滿文化藝術氣息的隱藏景點。多處大大小小妙趣橫生的壁畫，絕對值得打卡！這裡還有許多畫廊、文藝咖啡廳、特色居酒屋等你來發現！

Seto Inland Sea

Selected as a preservation district for groups of traditional buildings, Takehara Townscape Preservation Area is about 15 minutes on foot from JR Takehara Station. In this area, the old townscape is from the time when this area prospered from salt making and sake brewing in the Edo period (the 17th to mid-19th century). The unique view with cobblestoned paths along with traditional wooden buildings and plaster walls makes you feel as if you are back in the Edo period. This area has been used as a filming location for TV dramas, commercials, and anime works.

TAKEHARA 竹原

被列為重要傳統建築物群的竹原街道保存地區，從 JR 竹原站步行 15 分鐘左右即可到達。這裡保留著江戶時代後期以製鹽、造酒而繁榮起來的街道風貌。石階小路、傳統木造建築，猶如穿越至江戶時代，因此這裡也有「小京都」之稱。一些電視劇、廣告、動漫也在這裡取景呢！

If you want to find great souvenirs from Hiroshima, “ekie” at Hiroshima Station is the place to go. ekie has a souvenir area, with specialties from Hiroshima Prefecture and the Setouchi region. Famous Momiji Manju is available from various manufacturers and you can compare them at this place. There are various products made with lemons and oysters. At a dining area, you can enjoy various kinds of delicious dishes, including Hiroshima’s specialty okonomiyaki, local dishes with local ingredients, and seafood dishes. There are also many places serving desserts. 1 Fukushima 福島

Weeping cherry trees of the Nitchu Line 日中線的枝垂櫻林道

Blossoms on about 1,000 weeping cherry trees along a walking path for about 3 km bloom brilliantly, creating a beautiful view of a faint pink shower. This area used to be part of the old railroad, the Nitchu Line, which was closed in 1984. Midway along the path, a steam locomotive is displayed, which used to run on the Nitchu Line. This area around the steam locomotive is popular as a photo-taking spot, and a lesser-known but great spot is on the north side. We highly recommend you take the time to walk to the end of the path. As it is very crowded during the cherry blossom season, you may want to use public transportation. The beginning of the walking path can be reached in about 5 minutes from JR Kitakata Station. 1984 年廢棄的舊國鐵日中線遺跡的一部分。在長約 3 公里的遊步道上，約 1,000 棵枝垂櫻絢麗盛綻，宛如淡紅色的花瓣雨傾注而下。中間地點還展出曾實際馳騁於日中線的蒸汽火車。此處周圍是人潮熙攘的拍照景點，其北側則是遊客較少的秘密景點。請走到遊步道的盡頭看看吧。花季期間十分擁擠，建議搭乘大眾交通工具前往。從 JR 喜多方站步行約 5 分鐘，即為遊步道的開端。

2 Iwate 岩手

Ippon-zakura at Koiwai Farm 小岩井農場的「一本櫻」

A large meadow about 1.5 km from “Makiba-en,” a tourist area inside Koiwai Farm, has breathtaking scenery with a huge cherry tree. The land used to be used as a cattle range, and the cherry tree is said to have been planted about 100 years ago for shade to protect the cows from strong sunlight in summer. If you look at the contrast among the white snow on Mount Iwate, the pink-tinted blossoms on the lone tree, and the bright green of the grass land in a bit-chilly wind, you will feel the joy of spring after the harsh winter of the Tohoku area. As the meadow area is off-limits, you should see the scenery from the viewing area along the road. A huge cherry tree which is considered to be over 1,000 years old, with a height of 13.5 meters. It is one of the “Three Grand Cherry Trees of Japan,” along with Yamataka’s Jindai-zakura in Yamanashi Prefecture and Neodani’s Usuzumi-zakura in Gifu Prefecture. When a full load of cherry blossoms on the weeping branches comes to bloom, an overwhelming view appears as if it is an actual waterfall (takizakura) flowing down the trees. Famous as a town of cherry trees, Miharu Town has many other spots to view the blossoms. As roads and parking areas are crowded with many cars during the cherry blossom season, it is recommended to take a taxi to your destination from JR Miharu Station.

Cycling is one of the most popular leisure activities in the world! There are many cycling routes that cater for all levels, from serious cyclists to beginners. As one of the greatest and most famous cycling spots in Japan, Shimanami Kaido has been chosen as one of the “seven best bike routes in the world” by CNN, and was also designated as one of the first three National Cycle Routes last year for being a cycling route that represents Japan and that can be boasted to the world. Connecting the main island and Shikoku island via the islands of the Seto Inland Sea with eight bridges and a ferry, this cycling route offers you an opportunity to cycle while enjoying beautiful landscapes with the ocean, islands, as well as a nice sea breeze. Advanced cyclists can complete the route in one day; however, most people will take the time to complete in two days or more.

On the Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge especially—the longest suspension bridge on the route (about 4 km long), which connects Imabari City in Shikoku and Oshima Island—you can cycle while gazing at the beautiful ocean and islands below and feeling the sea breeze. Umashima Island—located near the middle of the bridge—can be accessed by an elevator from Point the bridge. Don’t miss the island with its beautiful ocean view and quiet atmosphere.

Sasaya Iori, Bettei is a new-style cafe under the theme of “wagashi-style meal,” which is operated by traditional Kyoto confectioner “Sasaya Iori.” It serves a variety of beautiful, delicious Japanese sweets, including “Matcha Parfait” with a nice combination of smooth matcha cream and crispy texture of monaka shell, as well as savory dishes using wagashi ingredients, which were created under the wholly new concept. Some are only available at this place, such as “Iori no Ohagi,” which requires a spoon to eat.

This cafe serving Japanese tea is operated by a traditional tea wholesaler. While the exterior, over 120 years old, is typical of machiya (traditional wooden townhouses), the interior is modern with a luxurious atmosphere. You can enjoy various kinds of Japanese tea along with special sweets prepared by its patissier. “Chayomi” is a set, which comes with five kinds of tea, including matcha, sencha, hojicha, Japanese oolong tea, and Japanese black tea, along with five kinds of sweets in bite-sized pieces. Japanese Cooking Class in Ningyocho hosted by att.JAPAN

This time, we learned how to make… The participants were two students from Nepal (Santee and Dikshya) and one from China (Mr. Chen). Since the instructor of this cooking class, Chie, a certified nutritionist, is fluent in English, Santee and Dikshya communicated with her both in Japanese and English. Mr. Chen, who had been in Japan for 2 months, could not understand complicated Japanese yet, so a Chinese staff member helped him as an interpreter. The class started in a friendly atmosphere.

Iwashi-no-tsumirejiru Minced sardine balls in a clear soup

Put the precooked soybeans, sake, kombu, salt, and rice into a rice cooker, and simply push the start button. It is very easy. Soybeans are rich in various nutrients, including proteins, vitamins, folic acid, potassium, magnesium, and calcium.

Spinach and carrots with sesame dressing The key point for making this dish is to squeeze and drain the cooked spinach and carrots very well.

Preparation of codfish fillets is important for a delicious dish. Sprinkle the fillets with some salt and sake and place and leave them for a while on top of the kombu. This is for letting the umami of kombu go into the fish.

Agedashi-tofu

Advice from Chef Wrap the pieces of tofu for agedashi-tofu with kitchen paper to drain and then dust them with starch powder.

Student’s Comment In order to learn food culture in Japan, I participated in this cooking studio activity. The best thing about the activity was that we as students all had the chance to practice the protocols by ourselves so that later we can immediately apply what we learned in the class to daily life. And on the moment of finishing, I felt a strong sense of accomplishment. Thanks for such a nice activity to the organizer. If there will be a similar activity in the future, there is no doubt that I will participate in it.

It was more complicated to make, since the instructions include cleaning fish and pounding the fish and vegetables together with a knife. But the participants could enjoy a feeling of accomplishment when they were tasting the dish they made.

Pieces of tofu were fried in a frying pan with a small amount of oil, instead of being deep-fried in lots of oil. This way, you can cut down the amount of oil you use, which makes this dish healthier. Pouring a sweet-and-salty soy sauce-based sauce over the golden piece of fried tofu. It looks delicious!

Meanwhile, cut the vegetables, including carrots, shiitake mushrooms, and leek. The reason why this dish is very popular among participants is that not only do they love fish but also the dish is easy to make. All you have to do is to pour seasonings over the fish and vegetables and steam them together.

Then, mix the spinach and carrots with ground sesame seeds and add soy sauce and mirin to taste.

Iizaka Onsen is located in Fukushima City, an inland area of Fukushima 飯坂溫泉位於福島縣內陸地區的福島市，是 Prefecture.
