TRAVELLING BY LOCAL RAILWAY IN TOHOKU

Travelling by Local Railway in Tohoku 搭乘地方鐵路周遊東北地區

In Japan, railway lines with a small passenger capacity are called “local railways.” There are many popular railways serving as sightseeing trains running through scenic areas all over Japan. Here are some of the recommended local railways in the Tohoku region. The weather in Tohoku is very pleasant from spring to summer. You will encounter wonderful views of the ocean and mountains.

Akita Nairiku Jukan Railway

運輸量較少地區的鐵路路線在日本稱為「地方鐵路」。日本全國有許多行駛於風光明媚的地區，並以觀光列車之姿大受歡迎的鐵路。這次為大家介紹東北地區推薦的地方鐵路。從春季到夏季，東北的氣候舒適宜人，你一定能在此邂逅山岳與大海交織的絕美景緻。

秋田內陸縱貫鐵路

Running through Akita Prefecture north to south from Kakunodate Station, one of the Akita Shinkansen stations, to Takanosu Station, this line is also commonly called “Akita Nairiku Line.” Along the line, you can see a typical landscape of satoyama, buffer zones between wilderness and human habitation, in Japan, with mountains, fields, and villages. 這是從秋田新幹線停靠的角館站到鷹巢站間，行駛於秋田縣的南北向鐵路，通稱為「秋田內陸線」。沿線有群山與田園風景開展，可以欣賞日本里山的原始風貌。

Mt. Moriyoshi 森吉山

It takes about 20 minutes by taxi from Aniai Station to get to this mountain. As one of Japan’s “100 Famous Mountains with Flowers,” it offers great seasonal views, including an early-summer view with alpine plants, an autumn view with colored leaves, and a winter view with trees beautifully covered with ice. You can take a gondola to easily get to the top. 在阿仁合站下車，搭乘計程車約 20 分鐘抵達。此處被列為「花之百大名山」之一，除了初夏的高山植物之外，秋季可欣賞紅葉、冬季則有樹冰（霧淞），可欣賞因季節而異的絕美景觀。搭乘纜車即可輕鬆登上山頂。

This area is said to be the birthplace of “matagi” traditional hunters. The Matagi Museum next to the facility offers an opportunity to learn about the culture of matagi and the surrounding nature, including matagi’s costumes, hunting, and mountain ecosystems through the audio guide (Japanese, English, Chinese). Sake brewed in this inn, which is called doburoku, a rare unrefined sake difficult to buy, also can be enjoyed. With a reservation, a pick-up service from Animatagi Station is available.

相傳此地區是自古以狩獵為業的人們 ─ 「又鬼」的發源地。設施中附設的又鬼資料館內，可以透過語音講解（日語、英語、中文）了解有關又鬼的裝束、狩獵、山岳生態系等文化與自然的知識。旅舍製作的「幻之 DOBUROKU」也值得品嘗。若事先預約，還可利用從阿仁又鬼站接送的服務。 att. JAPAN Spring/2021

From July to early September, you can see five spots of “rice paddy art” along the railway from the train window. Local people collaborate and create the works of art using various kinds of rice. The designs change every year, sometimes including popular characters. 7 月～ 9 月上旬，沿線的 5 個地點將登場可從車窗欣賞的「稻田藝術」。當地民眾共同合作，種植各式各樣品種的稻米以進行繪製。圖案每年不同，有時也會描繪知名的角色喔！

Aoimori Railway Line

青森鐵路

This line connects a distance of 121.9km from Aomori Station to Metoki Station near the border between Aomori and Iwate prefectures. Through the train window, you can enjoy beautiful idyllic scenery of Aomori while seeing forests, ocean, and towns. The bright light blue body with its image character “Molly,” visible from a distance, is a trademark of the train. 從青森站串聯靠近岩手縣邊境的目時站，長 121.9 公里的路線。透過車窗可逐一欣賞森林、海洋、街道等青森優美閑靜的景色。繪有吉祥物 Molly 的清爽水藍色車體很有特色，從遠處看也十分搶眼。

Asamushi Aquarium 淺蟲水族館

A 10-minute walk from Asamushi-Onsen Station, this is the northernmost aquarium on the main island facing Mutsu Bay. There are about 300 kinds of water creatures, including aquatic life native to the prefecture. A big tunnel tank, which makes you feel like you are walking in the ocean, and a dynamic performance by dolphins are especially popular.

Of course you should visit onsen. The free foot bath facility in front of Asamushi-Onsen Station is famous. You can casually enjoy onsen while waiting for your train to go back home. (The detailed information on Asamushi Onsen is on page 25.) 當然不能錯過溫泉囉！淺蟲溫泉站前免費的足湯相當有名，在等待回程列車的空檔，輕鬆感受一下溫泉之樂吧！（淺蟲溫泉的詳細介紹請見 P.25）

Kujira-mochi 久持餅

Molly’s Cafe “Molly’s Cafe” inside the Asamushi-Onsen Station building sells sweets and souvenirs made with specialties of the prefecture, including “Kujira-mochi” with a flavor of walnuts and a unique chewy texture. Enjoy the delicious specialties of the prefecture. Cute items of image character “Molly” are available. 在淺蟲溫泉站站內的 Molly’ s Cafe 中，銷售使用縣內名產製作的甜點與伴手禮。以胡桃口味與 Q 彈口感為特色的「久持餅」一定不能錯過，其他還有很多當地引以為傲的特產。吉祥物 Molly 的可愛周邊也可在此購買喔！ att. JAPAN

Sanriku Railway

This is a popular line running along the Sanriku Coast facing the Pacific Ocean in Iwate Prefecture. With a great view of the ocean, it runs from Kuji Station in the north to Sakari Station in the south for a total of 163km. Recovered from the damage caused by several natural disasters, such as the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and the typhoon of 2019, this line is beloved by the local people as an important means of transportation.

奔馳於面朝岩手縣太平洋的三陸海岸，可眺望大海絕美風光的人氣路線。從北邊的久慈站到南邊的盛站，全長 163 公里。曾經經歷過 2011 年的東日本大震災與 2019 年的颱風等災害，現在仍是深受當地居民喜愛的重要代步工具。

Jodogahama Beach 淨土濱

In about 20 minutes by bus from the nearest Miyako Station, you can see a wonderful view with white rocks with sharp points rising from the ocean in a quiet bay, which is said to be “like heaven.” The contrast among the green color of the pine trees, white color of the rocks, and blue color of the ocean is just beautiful.

從最近的車站宮古站搭乘巴士約 20 分鐘。靜謐水灣的海岸上聳立著尖銳的白色岩石，可欣賞「彷彿極樂淨土般的卓絕風景」。綠色的松樹、白色的岩石，以及湛藍的海洋形成的對比十分優美。

A romantic station filled with love 愛情滿溢的浪漫車站

The name of the station “Koishihama” used to be written as “小石浜,” which literally means “small stone beach,” but it was changed in 2009 to the present kanji character “恋し浜,” which literally means “beloved beach,” due to the deep fondness of the local people. With “Shiawase no Kane” (bell of happiness) on the platform and a bunch of scallop shells with wishes for success in love written by visitors, hanging in the waiting room, the station is said to be a “power spot” of romance. 原本站名的漢字為小石濱站，2009 年因應當地民眾的熱忱改名為「戀濱站」，日文發音都是「Koishihama-eki」。月台上設有「幸福之鐘」，可在候車室內放置的當地產扇貝上寫下祈求戀愛圓滿的心願後吊掛，因此也被稱為戀愛的能量景點。

Kuji Station was used as a setting for a popular Japanese drama. The shop inside the station called, “Sanriku Riasu-tei,” offers a wonderful specialty bento called “Unibento” (sea urchin bento). You may want to pre-order it if you want to be sure to try it. Rikuchu-Noda Station is a unique facility combining a railway station and a roadside station. “Roadside Station Noda” offers a popular soft serve ice cream called “Noda-shio soft,” with a hint of natural sea salt.

久慈站曾是日本知名電視連續劇的取景地，車站內的商店「三陸谷灣亭」的名產「海膽便當」滋味絕倫！建議事先預約。陸中野田站是鐵路車站與公路休息站為一體的罕見設施。在「道之驛野田」可品嘗使用天然海鹽製作的霜淇淋「野田鹽霜淇淋」。

A railway connecting Nishi-Wakamatsu Station in Fukushima Prefecture and Aizu Kogen Ozeguchi Station. “Oza-Toro-Tembo” train is a hybrid train, with which you can enjoy three types of trains in one, including “Ozashiki” tatami-mat seats, “Torokko” car, and “Tembo” observation seats. The grand view from the train window is breathtaking. (The train is mainly in operation on Saturdays and Sundays from April to November.) 聯結福島縣的西若松站與會津高原尾瀨口站的鐵路。搭乘「Ozatoro 展望列車」，即可一次享受榻榻米席、小火車席，以及觀景席的三重樂趣，從車窗望出的景色相當宏偉，美得令人屏息（主要於 4 月～ 11 月的週六、週日行駛）。

Ouchi-juku 大內宿

Ouchi-juku used to prosper as a post station along Aizu Nishi Kaido road, which was a main pre-modern highway in the Edo period (1603– 1868). With thatched houses built up to several hundred years ago on both sides of the street, the old atmosphere is well preserved. In 1981, Ouchi-juku was selected as one of the Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The nearest station, Yunokamionsen Station, has a rare station building with a thatched roof. 大內宿因過去作為幹道「會津西街道」的宿場町而繁榮一時。擁有數百年歷史的茅草屋沿街道林立，充分保留了江戶時代的氣氛，1981 年被列為國家重要傳統建築物群保存地區。最靠近大內宿的湯野上溫泉站，是在日本國內亦十分罕見的茅草屋頂車站。

This town has a lot of spots to see, such as Aizu Wakamatsu Castle, more commonly called Tsuruga Castle by local people, Iimori Hill, and Sazae-do. This area also has lots of heartbreaking stories related to the war that took place in the town during the chaotic days of the end of the Tokugawa shogunate. Built in 1796, Sazae-do is a three-storied, hexagonal pagoda, with a height of 16.5 meters. Its architectural style is very unique and rare worldwide, in which the ascending passage and the descending passage never cross each other. It is designated as a nationally important cultural property.

Fukushima Prefecture is extending its great record of the “highest number of gold awards received in Japan for seven consecutive years” at the Annual Japan Sake Awards, which has been held since the Meiji period (1868–1912). There are many new kinds of delicious sake made by Aizu’s sake breweries, including Hiroki, Sharaku, Yuri, Tenmei, and Aizumusume. For details, please check our web article.

以「鶴城」之稱為人熟知的會津若松城、飯盛山，以及國家重要文化財榮螺堂等精彩景點多不勝數。在幕府末年動盪不安的時期，亦曾經歷城下戰，並留下許多悲傷的故事。榮螺堂修建於 1796 年，是一座高 16.5 公尺、六角三層的會堂，上行和下行的通路不同，途中不會交錯，是舉世罕見的建築形式，1996 年被指定為國家重要文化財。

在從明治時代延續至今的全國新酒鑑評會上，福島縣創下了「連續 7 年金獎得獎數日本第一」的驚人紀錄。飛露喜、寫樂、YURI、天明、會津娘等，會津酒窖中新進且滋味絕佳的日本酒為數眾多。詳情請見網站文章。

線街道漫步線沿谷田

The Tokyu Setagaya Line is one of the only two tram lines left in Tokyo. The areas along the 10 stations from Sangen-jaya to Shimo-takaido are attractive with a peaceful atmosphere. 世田谷線是東京唯二存留的路面電車之一，串聯三軒茶屋站與下高井戶站的 10 個車站，這片區域洋溢著純樸的魅力。

Sky Carrot Observation Lobby Sky Carrot 瞭望大廳 It is free to enter the observatory on the 26th floor of Carrot Tower. It is a great spot to see Mount Fuji on clear days in winter. From the observation area facing central Tokyo, you can see Tokyo Tower and TOKYO SKYTREE. With a beautiful night view, this place is designated as one of the Night View Heritages of Japan.

This shop offers colorful unique novelty items, which are only available here, created by various kinds of people, including artists and people with disabilities, collected from all over the world, such as India and Mexico. You will be able to find what you want from a wide selection of items, including colorful hand towels, socks, clothes, ceramics, iPhone cases, and accessories. The shop often holds special exhibitions of novelty items and pop-up events with collaboration with other shops, so you can enjoy yourself there every time you visit.

This shrine enshrines the deified spirit Yoshida Shoin, who was an educator and thinker in the late Edo period (19th century). It is famous for enshrining a deity of learning. 祀奉江戶時代末年（19 世紀）的教育者暨思想家──吉田松陰的神社。這裡以祀奉學問之神聞名。

A drinking area near Sangen-jaya Station. With various types of drinking places such as Japanese, Western, and Chinese restaurants and bars on both sides of the street, creating a retro atmosphere, the area attracts, as a lively town, not only regular customers but also young people and foreigners.

Gotokuji Temple Said to be the birthplace of 豪德寺

manekineko (lucky cat figurines), this temple has about 4,000 manekineko figurines on the grounds. It is said that you can get further luck by bringing back your manekineko after it has granted your wish; therefore, there are lots of manekineko figurines returned by people.

Mahorodo Sogetsu 真幌堂蒼月

This homemade wagashi (Japanese sweets) shop has a sophisticated modern atmosphere. You can enjoy not only delicious standard wagashi made with red beans, such as daifuku, dorayaki, yokan, and warabi-mochi (bracken-starch dumpling), but also unique original seasonal wagashi created with new ideas of the owner. Cycling around Lake Biwa

Located in Shiga Prefecture, Lake Biwa is the biggest lake in Japan. A cycling route around the lake, called “BIWAICHI,” has been selected as one of the National Cycle Routes. It is a long cycling course of about 200km around the lake; however, with lots of flat parts, it can be recommended for not only advanced cyclists but also beginners.

琵琶湖座落於滋賀縣，並以面積勇冠日本為傲，環繞其外圍一圈的自行車道通稱為「BIWAICHI」，與島波海道並列獲選為「國家（級）自行車道」。這雖然是環行一圈約 200 公里的自行車兜風路線，

但道路多半平坦，無論是老練的自行車騎士，還是今後即將開始嘗試自行車兜風的新手，這條路線都值得推薦！

If you are used to cycling for a long distance, it won’t be too hard to go through the course in one day. However, you may want to take a bit more time, from onenight and two-days to two-night and three-days to fully enjoy the course. There are lots of places that are too good to pass by along the course, such as historical sites and spots with gorgeous views. Depending on the time available and your stamina, you can choose to cycle either on the north side Hokko (North Lake), about 150km, or the south side Nanko (South Lake), about 50km. There are also 11 cycling courses, called “BIWAICHI PLUS,” visiting sights in the surrounding areas a little distance away from the lake. You can enjoy cycling in various ways.

A cruise ship, Ohmi Marine, connecting Hikone Port on the east side of the lake and Makino Port on the west side, is equipped with cycle racks, which allow passengers to bring their bicycles onboard. By taking this ship, you can avoid the road with lots of ups and downs on the north side, so it is recommended for beginners. One of the most famous kinds of food in Shiga Prefecture is Omi Beef, one of the top wagyu brands. If you want to taste it casually, you can try an Omi Beef burger offered at Sun-Burger in Hikone. HYPNOSISMIC is a multimedia project with 18 male voice actors, where the characters compete against each other through rap performances. With music unique to each character and audio drama with impressive narrative, the project has widely expanded to live performance, stage performance, game apps, and comics, and it was made into a TV anime series in October 2020. In the anime, teams based in four cities, including IKEBUKURO, SHIBUYA, SHINJUKU, and YOKOHAMA, battle with each other through rap performances. You should pay attention to the backgrounds, which are modelled on actual spots in the cities. In the original series, in addition to these four teams, two other teams, based in OSAKA and NAGOYA, joined and a total of six teams have fierce rap battles with each other. In 2021 Japan’s unique brand of special effects blockbusters called “tokusatsu” are all the rage. Scheduled to be released

in early summer, the production team behind the 2016 hit Shin Godzilla will release their latest work, Shin Ultraman. A milestone in the history of tokusatsu television in Japan, “Ultraman” will be reborn on the big screen under the planning and script of Hideaki Anno, known for directing the anime “Neon Genesis Evangelion.” Also this year, Hollywood unleashes the second installment in their Godzilla franchise, “GODZILLA VS. KONG,” while in Japan a completely new Godzilla anime series “Godzilla SP <Singular Point>” will start to air on TOKYO MX and other stations from April. Netflix subscribers will get an advanced preview of the show before its exclusive release worldwide. This new series was conceived and scripted by one of Japan’s preeminent sci-fi novelists and winner of the prestigious Akutagawa Prize for literature, Toh Enjo. Completely different from those before, how will this new story break new ground? Elsewhere, in Sukagawa City (Fukushima Prefecture), the hometown of Ultraman creator and director, Eiji Tsuburaya, there are two new facilities where the profound depths of Japanese tokusatsu culture can be explored. Opened in January 2019, the “Tsuburaya Eiji Museum” uses panels and video interviews to introduce the 68-year career and personality of director Eiji Tsuburaya, known as the “god of tokusatsu.” Tokusatsu making videos and models are on display, along with the remarkable video screened only here: “Dream Challenge: Godzilla Appears in Sukagawa.” The “Sukagawa Tokusatsu Archive Center” opened in November 2020. In this facility, Japan’s proud tokusatsu culture is preserved for the future. Approximately 1,000 items used in the making of these films are stored here such as cameras, and miniature buildings and fighters, with some open to the public for free, including precious exhibits such as the statue of Shin Ultraman.

Recommended for Godzilla fans is “Nijigen no Mori” on Awaji Island. The world’s first full-scale Godzilla attraction “Godzilla Interception Operation Awaji” opened in October 2020. 2021 年，「特攝」作品備受矚目！由 2016 年席捲日本的電影《新哥吉拉》的製作團隊推出的最新作品── 《新超人力霸王》，預計將於初夏上映。已經成為日本特攝電視劇系列經典的《超人力霸王》，這次則由動畫《新世紀福音戰士》的知名導演庵野秀明操刀企劃與劇本，並於大銀幕上復甦。

The well-known manga and anime Astro Boy was created by the world-famous manga artist Osamu Tezuka. In Takarazuka City, in the southeast of Hyogo Prefecture, there is an Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum where you can feel the world of Tezuka. Actually, Tezuka spent his youth at Takarazuka!

著名漫畫、動畫《原子小金剛》的創作者是世界著名的漫畫家手塚治蟲。在兵庫縣東南部的寶塚市內，有一座「手塚治蟲紀念館」，在這裡可以探究手塚治蟲的世界觀。其實手塚治蟲的年少時代是在寶塚度過的喔！

At the Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum, opened in 1994, various items related to the artist as well as some of his production materials are exhibited, and visitors can even experience making their own anime work. In addition, an original movie is screened here which can be seen nowhere else. The library offers the complete works of this creator, around 2,000 volumes available for your reading pleasure available in English, Chinese, Korean and other foreign languages. 1994 年開館的手塚治蟲紀念館裡，展示著與手塚治蟲相關的物品和作品資料，在這裡還能體驗動畫製作。另外，還能觀看只有在這裡才能看到的原創影片。圖書館裡匯聚了幾乎所有手塚治蟲的作品，共有約 2,000 本書籍可以閱覽，也有英文、中文、韓文等外文書籍。

In front of the Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum stands a bronze statue of one of his character creations, the Phoenix. The vividly colored creature seems to flap its wings, full of life. 手塚治蟲紀念館前，矗立著一座手塚治蟲作品中的角色「火鳥」的銅像。顏色鮮艷的火鳥展開雙翅，栩栩如生。

Located at the base of the Natsudomari Peninsula facing Mutsu Bay in Aomori Prefecture at the northern edge of the main island of Honshu, Asamushi Onsen has been one of the renowned onsen in the Tohoku region since olden days. Discovered in the 9th century, this onsen is said to have been used to steam hemp for weaving cloth at that time. It is said that Honen, the founder of the Jodo Sect of Buddhism, visited this place in 1190, saw an injured deer immersing itself in the onsen water, and recommended people to do the same. Cooked rice with bamboo shoots and vegetables

‹Ingredients (for 4 people)› 300g rice 280g broth 10g shredded burdock

Rinse rice and drain water.
