A $50-million peace offering isn’t enough to help the horse racing industry after the province cut it off from slot machine revenues. “It’s worse than a divorce,” Aurora Adena Springs horse breeder Dermot Carty said. “We have laws in this province that make sure a spouse can’t kick another out with nothing.” The termination of the slots at racetrack program, a profit-sharing agreement between Ontario’s racetracks and the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation is March 31, 2013. Mr. Carty said no thought went into the provincial government’s move it will impact the industry in York Region and across Ontario. “This business is bread and butter to a lot of people,” he said. “Despite what people think, this is going to hurt the regular everyday people in the industry.” It will impact the horse race tracks, breeders, hay and grain farmers and stable employees See WE, page 8.

The Ontario SPCA denies reports of failing to follow protocol when it comes to euthanizing animals. Three former employees — Alexx Miller, Alison Rusk and Amy Truax — came forward this week, accusing the organization of disregarding the checklist used to determine if an animal needs to be euthanized and not having a registered veterinarian making health assessments. They spoke out hoping the government will step in and at least investigate, if not pass legisla-
