A $50-million peace offering isn’t enough to help the horse racing industry after the province cut it off from slot machine revenues.

“It’s worse than a divorce,” Aurora Adena Springs horse breeder Dermot Carty said. “We have laws in this province that make sure a spouse can’t kick another out with nothing.”

The termination of the slots at racetrack program, a profit-sharing agreement between Ontario’s racetracks and the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation is March 31, 2013.

Mr. Carty said no thought went into the provincial government’s move it will impact the industry in York Region and across Ontario.

“This business is bread and butter to a lot of people,” he said.

“Despite what people think, this is going to hurt the regular everyday people in the industry.”

The Ontario SPCA denies reports of failing to follow protocol when it comes to euthanizing animals.

Three former employees — Alexx Miller, Alison Rusk and Amy Truax — came forward this week, accusing the organization of disregarding the checklist used to determine if an animal needs to be euthanized and not having a registered veterinarian making health assessments.

Stop blaming the provincial government and start working together to improve social funding, United Way York Region CEO Daniele Zanotti urged in the wake of a report released by a provincewide coalition this week.

In it, the Ontario Common Front, comprising more than 90 community groups and labour unions across the province, suggested Ontario has sunk to last place in Canada in dealing with poverty and social services, with the largest increase in income inequality and the second-largest jump in poverty rates.

The report also found Ontario is dead last in funding for all social programs and Ontarians have the highest tuition and school fees, out-of-pocket health care costs and a burgeoning array of user fees.

Forty per cent of Ontarians have stagnant or declining incomes and the group said it’s time the government cancels tax cuts and loopholes for banks and corporations and reinvests the money.

Mr. Zanotti isn’t at odds with the report’s findings.

“It’s nice to know that nothing is new under the York Region sun for sure,” he said.

However, the provincial government isn’t the only place a finger needs to be pointed, he said.

Everyone is part of a solution, as the number of people living in poverty is increasing and low income rates in some York municipalities are growing faster than the provincial average, he said.

“The beauty of York Region is that we have always been underfunded, but in our underfunding, we have become collaborative and resourceful,” Mr. Zanotti said.

The human services planning board of York Region is one of many examples of people working together to help others make ends meet, he said.

“People are giving, people are volunteering, people get it,” he said of the companies that contribute to the community through the United Way.

“So the pie isn’t getting bigger,” Mr. Zanotti said. “It’s how to collectively rejig the pie.”

The reality remains many York residents visit food banks week after week for their share of the pie and it’s the government’s responsibility to decrease the income gap between rich and poor, York Region Food Network executive director Joan Stonehocker said.

Ms Stonehocker called the report’s findings accurate.

“It’s what we’ve been saying for years,” she said, adding the number of people accessing food banks in York spiked in 2009 and increased last year to more than 52,000.

They are a reminder to make the most of barbecuing weather while it lasts.

But who wants to cook up the same old fare?

Instead, you could create a South African Braai for your guests.

Or serve Kashmiri-style barbecued lamb, chicken and beef.

Maybe an Indo-Malay-inspired dish?

Braai, an Afrikaans word (pronounced B-rye) meaning barbecue or grill, is a social custom in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

The word is also used by English-speaking South Africans.

At a braai, you almost always eat a seasoned, traditional sausage made from minced or pounded meat, called boerevors and usually steak and lamb chops.

The boerevors can be beef, chicken or lamb. The trick to making boerevors is in the spicing, said Diana Meyer, of Eat Sum More, a Thornhill store that sells South African goods.

Corn meal, known as Mielie pap, is often served at a braai. It’s ground, dry corn, mixed with water before cooking — a staple of the South African palate, Ms Meyer said.

Mielie pap is often served with tomato and onion gravy.

Canadian barbecues to which Ms Meyer attends are mainly hosted by native South Africans, who serve a mix of South African and Canadian fare, so it’s common to find hot dogs, hamburgers and boerevors sharing space on the grill.

Everything you need for an authentic South African braai is available in Canada, Ms Meyer said. Ten years ago or more, you really had to hunt for South African goods, such as chutney, a hot or sweet pasty type of sauce.

Ms Meyer’s best advice: Be careful when cooking the boerevors that you don’t overcook the meat. Turn it over in one motion.

Do not prick it with a fork or all the juice will come out. You can enjoy boerevors yearround if you cook it in a pan. Of course, it’s best when cooked on a barbecue, she said.

Mr. Sohail barbecues on charcoal, not gas, because this makes the meat more tender and gives it more flavour.

Mr. Sohail, who lives in East Gwillimbury, grew up in Pakistan and came to Canada about 30 years ago.

When he came to Canada, he found mainly gas grills, which produce too much smoke for his liking, so he made his own because he knows lots of people do not want smoky meat.

“With my style of barbecue, we don’t need smoke,” he said.

Only heat from the barbecue is needed, he added. He also uses a smaller skewer, rather than a more than two-foot-long skewer used at an authentic Kashmiri barbecue.

No one wants a two-foot long skewer, he said.

Mr. Sohail’s advice to others trying a Kashmiri-style of barbecuing is to ensure certain spices aren’t burned on the grill, since it can ruin the taste of the meat. For example, you shouldn’t burn sugar because the taste changes.

Mr. Sohail showcased his food at the Strawberry Festival in Stouffville this summer.

He believes people have no choice but to buy his meat.

“The smell gets people,” he said. “It has such a particular taste, they can’t resist having it”.

Mandy Sou, an aspiring chef, develops recipes for Tacocats, a group of budding entrepreneurs who create and serve Asian inspired tacos.

Tacocats made last month’s Night it Up! Asian night market in Markham its first event.

Ms Sou created a grilled chicken satay taco, which is an Indo-Malay-style street food, for the event.

Chicken skewers are an appealing memory for her. She remembers seeing these skewers served in Hong Kong restaurants, often with rice and cubes of fresh cucumbers. Her concoction involves putting chicken satay in a taco with satay sauce and coconut sticky rice. Most people at the event responded well to the taco creation, she said. People liked the coconut rice and the spices in which the chicken is marinated.

For future events, she hopes to make grilled pork belly marinated with fish sauce, using Vietnamese-style grilling to which her grandmother introduced her growing up.

“Barbecuing gives this taste a pan cannot give. The char-grilled flavour. It is different,” she said.

Ms Sou enjoys eating food made using a Japanese bincho grill, too. This style of traditional Japanese charcoal grilling refers to using a particular type of coal. She enjoys eating this type of food because of the unique flavour from the coal.

It’s a tall order to govern York Region effectively and the chairperson has “incredible” and “sweeping” powers, with not much accountability to the taxpayers, he said.

“It’s almost like a czar,” Mr. Shurman added.

The bill is contentious and some York politicians have a vested interest in keeping things the way they are, Beaches-East York MPP Michael Prue said.

Markham recently voted against Regional Councillor Jim Jones’ motion to support the election of a regional chairperson.

Mr. Prue has known Mr. Fisch for more than 20 years and if Mr. Fisch decided to run for election as regional chairperson, many people would vote for him, Mr. Prue said.

“It’s about giving people the ultimate power to make decisions,” he said. “If you are afraid of the people as a politician, you are not to be in the game.”

Representative democracy is absent in the current system, Oak Ridges-Markham MPP Helena Jaczek said.

Newmarket-Aurora MPP Frank Klees went further, saying Mr. Fisch’s title of chairperson and CEO is a conflict, as the two functions are different.

The two roles should be separated in the best interest of the region, Mr. Klees said.

Southlake deserves accolades Re: Southlake recognized for outstanding patient care, Aug. 19.

This story only confirmed my experience with the care received by patients and their families at Southlake Regional Health Centre.

Three weeks ago, my husband had heart surgery. At 5:45 a.m., we were greeted on arrival by a smiling staff member who checked us in and gave us all the information and directions needed to go to the next step.

We were also greeted with a smiling face at pre-op check-in, where we were informed of what would be happening in the next hour and put at ease.

As all tests were done, a nurse explained what would be happening and gave us moral support. How do they do this every morning?

My husband was wheeled away after the nurses waited patiently for us to say our goodbyes.

While we waited, I was greeted by a volunteer in the cardiovascular ICU waiting room. He knew my name,

asked if he could be of help and sat with me to take my mind off what was happening elsewhere.

At noon, the volunteer went off duty, but assured me someone else would be there for the afternoon, wished me well and was on his way.

We were later told by another volunteer only volunteers who have had heart surgery are allowed to volunteer for cardiovascular patients and the family waiting for the patient.

The next day, my husband was back in a bed in ICU and the nurses were absolutely phenomenal in their care.

He is now home, home care was ordered and they also have done a phenomenal job.

Some people complain about our health care system, but we should all be grateful for our nurses, doctors, volunteers and home care providers.

We are fortunate to be so well cared for and Southlake deserves accolades for the care and caring.

Canada ranks among top water users W

e can’t live without water.

We need it to stay hydrated and grow food. We use it to generate electricity.

Water is in us and all around us. It makes up about 65 per cent of our bodies.

Thanks to the hydrologic cycle, it circulates constantly, as liquid, gas and solid, evaporating from oceans and fresh water, moving through air, raining on to Earth, flowing through plants and animals, into the ground and back to the oceans through rivers, streams and sewage outflows.

Water covers 70 per cent of the Earth’s surface, but 97.5 per cent is salt water.

Of the 2.5 per cent that’s fresh, 68.7 per cent is locked in the ice and snow of the Arctic, Antarctic and mountains, leaving about 1 per cent for our use.

More than one billion people lack adequate access to clean water.

Just as human activity is upsetting Earth’s carbon cycle, our actions are altering the water cycle.

Water is our most precious resource, but we waste it, just as we waste other resources, including oil and gas.

When we use so much that the system can’t renew itself, we create shortages and drought. When we pollute it,

More than one billion people in the world survive on just five litres a day, less than the amount of a typical North American toilet flush.

The average Canadian uses 335 litres a day, more than double the average for similar industrialized countries. In fact, we use more in Canada than in any country except the United States.

As individuals, we can reduce consumption and find ways to use water more efficiently.

We also have to look at industrial use. Energy generation, including what’s required to extract fuels, is straining water resources more every day.

According to a report on the EcoWatch website, “fracking” is particu-

larly worrisome. This process involves injecting massive amounts of water and chemicals into the ground at high pressure to fracture underground shale and release gas deposits.

Each frack can use up to 30 million litres of water, and a well can be fracked as many as 18 times.

“The water, usually drawn from natural resources such as lakes and rivers, is unrecoverable once it’s blasted into the earth, and out of the water cycle for good,” according to EcoWatch.

With record high temperatures and widespread drought in the U.S., oil and gas drillers and the energy industry have to compete with farmers for scarce water.

There, the fastest growing use of fresh water is by coal, nuclear and natural gas power plants, according to a report by the River Network.

Our reliance on fossil fuels is also contributing to global warming, making water even more scarce, as glaciers melt, rivers dry up and droughts become increasingly common.

Beyond reducing individual use, one of our priorities must be to move from fossil fuels to energy that has fewer detrimental effects on water supplies and fewer environmental impacts overall.

We can also get creative.

A study in the journal Science, Taking the ‘Waste’ Out of ‘Wastewater’ for Human Water Security and Ecosystem Sustainability, concludes we can employ substitution, regeneration and reduction to conserve water.

Substitution involves using lowquality instead of high-quality water for many activities, such as sprinkling a garden with collected rainwater rather than drinkable tap water.

We can also keep water clean and plentiful by protecting and preserving our valuable natural capital, often for less money.

Instead of spending $8 billion for a water-treatment plant, New York City officials spent $1 billion to buy land and protect habitat that filters and stores water.

In Canada, we often take water for granted.

With increasing pressure on the availability and cleanliness of our water, we have to start paying closer attention to what we do with it.

York Region schools will be looking at mathematics a little more closely following the release of the provincial standardized testing results.

The Education Quality and Accountability Office released the test results of grades 3 and 6 reading, writing and arithmetic and Grade 9 mathematics.

While the board-by-board and school-byschool numbers won’t be released until next month, the provincial results show students are making progress in literacy, but falling behind when it comes to numeracy.

The number of students making the provincial standard in Grades 3 and 6 reading and writing increased, but there was no improvement in Grade 3 mathematics. There was a decrease in Grade 6 mathematics and less than half of applied mathematics students in Grade 9 are meeting the standard.

“The province has identified math as an area of focus and we concur,” York Region District School Board curriculum superintendent Beate Planche said.

She couldn’t speak specifically about the results of the local school board because they have yet to be released, but the board’s strategy includes a push in numeracy.

She attributes the drop in the math numbers to the subject becoming more complex, with higher expectations.

Math is no longer just a series of numbers and formulas to memorize. It now requires critical thinking and problem solving skills, she said.

“It’s even going to hurt others like the dealership down the street where I purchase trucks every year,” Mr. Carty said.

The agreement allowed the OLG to use the racing industry’s pre-existing facilities as casinos, providing the industry with $3.7 billion since its inception in 1998, about $345 million a year. The slot machine revenues were split three ways, with the government receiving 75 per cent, municipalities 5 per cent and track owners and other horse industry people split the final 20 per cent.

The track owners’ cut was to be used to support some 60,000 jobs, maintain prizes for winners, support horse breeders, keep up the condition of the tracks and keep the betting system flourishing.

It was a 30-page report penned by three former cabinet ministers representing all major political parties that called the practice of sharing slot machine profits from racetracks with the horse racing industry “poor public policy”.

But Mr. Carty says the $50 million, stretched over three years, being offered by the government in place of the slots revenue will do little to ease the transition.

The panel of former ministers didn’t dispute it would take more than the funds being offered to keep the industry viable and stated more research on the matter is needed.

She said there has been some interest shown from the casino industry, including developers from Las Vegas, to enter into a partnership to build additional casinos in the province, which would house some of the lost slot machines.

Ms Miller pointed to a treatment care plan showing an animal’s assessment in handwritten scribbles as proof of the accusations. It first describes an animal as happy and vocal, but a second entry describes the animal as having with behavioural issues.

Animals change, Ms Cross said.

“There is no cut or dry when it comes to euthanasia,” she said. “There is a guideline, but it’s not like if the animal has this condition, it has to be put down.”

The Aurora Skating Club teaches children the fundamentals of skating in a fun, positive way while providing all the elements that encourage advancement! CDA Dance Academy Inc. Chantal and her family moved to Newmarket when she was young, at which point she began training intensely in dance. By age 11, she knew she wanted to some day run her own dance studio.

In 2000, she opened CDA Dance Academy Inc., a 3,000 sq.ft., two-studio facility on Harry Walker Pkwy. She had 80 students, which grew to about 150, and stayed at this studio for 8 years.

In 2007, she moved her studio space to Davis Drive and Main Street. Her dancers loved the studio atmosphere and it quickly doubled to 300 students.

In 2010, she moved the studio into the corner plaza at Yonge & Mulock, and custom built the studio of her dreams!

CDA Dance Academy Inc., has four studios, a parent waiting area overlooking the two larger studios, a homework room, male (for the 30+ male participants) and female change rooms, viewing windows in all the studios, a

beautiful reception, large washrooms, storage for the studio’s ever growing props, and a kitchenette. This amazing studio has now grown to almost 600 students and Welcomes new Dance Director Andrea Paspalis.

Chantal would like to thank all the people who have helped build her dream with her long journey. Central York Girls Hockey Association Celebrating 20 years of women’s and girls hockey in central York Region!

We are a minor hockey league based in Aurora and Newmarket offering a full range of rep and house league teams for over 900 girls and women, from age 4 through 64. We have multiple rep teams in all the minor hockey divisions, from Novice for little girls, through to Senior and Intermediate for young women.

Our rep teams compete at elite levels within Ontario, including the PWHL, a provincial league of 18 teams. Our extensive house league program offers a fun introduction to hockey programs for little girls and welcomes new players at all ages. In our higher divisions, girls who have played for a number of years can enjoy a good level of competition as well as accommodate those who are new

to hockey. Included under the umbrella of the CYGHA is a unique house league division for women of all ages and abilities. We welcome all women, ranging from those in their 40’s who have never played hockey before to young women who competed at a high level when they were younger and just want to play for fun now. iDance Studio iDance Studio is Newmarket’s newest studio offering classes in dance and yoga. Studio owners and sisters, Rhonda Dimma and Jenny Weber are committed to bringing fun, creativity and lasting memories to every class at their studio.

Although iDance is in its third year, the sisters’ training began over 28 years ago. The girls grew up immersed in the dance scene and are thrilled to be sharing their passion for dance with their students. iDance is not just any studio. While dance is a main focal point, the studio offers a wide variety of classes including yoga and fitness and caters to children, teens and adults of all skill levels.

Irish dance is a worldwide phenomenon that has its roots in Irish cultural dancing. The benefits of Irish dance are many: concentration, coordination, team work, poise, rhythm, memorization, and timing. Irish dance is a great way for kids and athletes in any type of sport, to expend energy, build endurance, coordination, learn teamwork and develop personal drive.

Located in Newmarket, The Irish Dance Studio has been serving York Region since 1996 and teaching the art of Irish dance to students of all ages, from toddler to adult. Their curriculum includes ballet, jazz, hip hop, acro, musical theatre, lyrical and tap classes in conjunction with existing Irish classes. Featuring a modern facility, the Studio boasts three full studios with viewing windows, two separate waiting areas, change room facilities and a homework/ lunchroom. We offer a variety of educational programs for children and teens age 3-18 years as well as 2 adult cast productions each year. National Training Rinks NTR opened its doors in the Winter of 1995 and has grown to include three locations and six rinks. Featuring classes from tots to adults, recreational to specialty clinics. Learn to play, Learn to Skate, Power Skating, Power Hockey Development, Adult Hockey Instructional classes, Skill Development, 3 on 3 and more.

The Newmarket location is excited to bring back the Youth Winter Pond Hockey League, which will introduce our new Bantam division. This alternative league plays only one day on the weekends. Games and practices happen in a 90-minute time slot which consists of a practice followed by a game. This non-contact, co-ed house league provides exceptional hockey value.

Socks and jerseys are included in the price of the program.

The Youth Winter Pond Hockey League is broken into Tyke, Novice, Atom, Peewee and Bantam divisions. National Training Rinks is offering this program to any player, from any community who wishes to play. The league welcomes beginners while still providing a good hockey opportunity to players with prior hockey experience.

Running for a 24-week session, the league will start on Saturday Oct. 13 and ends in April 2013.

Newmarket Soccer Club Established in 1960, the Newmarket Soccer Club is one of the largest community soccer organizations in York Region. The club holds more than 5,000 players (ages 4+) playing on over 300 competitive and recreational teams, coached by over 500 volunteer and professional coaches.

The Club will soon be based at its very own 50,000 square foot indoor facility the Newmarket SoccerCentre, and carries the Gold Standard Award for Club Excellence from the Ontario Soccer Association (OSA).

Our tradition for excellence includes one national championship, several Ontario Cup winners and many NSC players having earned scholarships with universities and colleges in Canada and the United States.

The NSC strives to ensure that each individual player in the Club is given the opportunity to advance his or her soccer skills. Our technical

development plan embraces the Long Term Player Development (LTPD) model recently adopted across Ontario, and features genuinely player centric program design with investment in player development rather than focusing on individual game results. This plan is being implemented by our Technical Division consisting of international, national and provincially licensed coaches.

Kicking off in mid-October, and for the first time in its 50+ year history within the community, the Club will offer soccer opportunities 12 months a year in its very own facility. The Newmarket Indoor Soccer League (NISL) and the Newmarket Soccer School of Excellence, for both competitive and recreational players, are open for registration.

Queen’s York Rangers 2799 Army Cadet Corps The Queen’s York Rangers 2799 Army Cadet Corps is part of a national youth organization for male and females aged 12-18 years, promoting leadership, citizenship and physical fitness while providing a better awareness of the Canadian Forces.

Our training year runs from early September to midJune, followed by summer camp. Activities include Air Rifle Marksmanship, Biathlon, Sports, Drill, Band, Map & Compass, Orienteering, Geocaching, Camping, Canoeing, Hiking, Mountain Biking, Abseiling, Zip Lining, Cold Weather Survival and First Aid. We also participate in events where high school students can easily earn their 40 hours of community service.

The first 3 years of summer camp are normally 2, 3 and 6 week courses at either CFB Borden or Connaught Range where cadets earn a training bonus of $60 per week. Senior Cadets have an opportunity to spend 6 weeks in Alberta mountain climbing, glacier climbing, white-water canoeing

and kayaking.

Other opportunities include attending the parachute course, travelling to another country such as England, Scotland or Australia for advanced training, or working as a staff cadet at one of many summer training centres in Canada earning almost $4,000!

The Department of National Defence and our sponsors at Legion Branches #385 Aurora and #356 Sutton provide much of what we need, along with our Support Committee. There is no cost to be a member of the Corps!

We are currently based at the old Aurora Armoury in the Town Park at Larmont and Mosley Street, but will soon move into the new John Graves Simcoe Armoury at 215 Industrial Parkway South. Competition – No, It’s Not Just for Sports Enthusiasts.

The contest is over. The room erupts with excited chatter. In the large hall, over 200 students from grades 3 to 12 have just completed writing one of the nation’s largest series of mathematics contests. Lexi Marton intended to complete her collegiate soccer career on a high note.

Instead, the senior captain and defender for the Penn State University Nittany Lions women’s team will miss the entire NCAA season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered Aug. 1 during a pre-season workout.

It is the worst of news for any athlete dependent on two solid knees.

Marton, a key piece of the puzzle for the sixth-ranked Nittany Lions, received the diagnosis with the expected emotion. It is the same knee the Aurora resident injured in 2010, though that time it was the medial collateral ligament curtailing her sophomore season.

“The doctor’s eyes started welling up and she began crying and I started crying, too,” recalled Marton, who, with a brace from hip to ankle and compression sleeve to stabilize the joint, gets from class to class on a small, motorized scooter. “I knew right away it was bad. I didn’t know it was the ACL, but it hurt so bad, I knew I was (injured).

“I was obviously devastated when it first happened, but I’ve been forced into figuring out who I am without soccer,” said the 22-yearold, a graduate of The Country Day School in King Township. “Right now, I’m just a girl going to class in her senior year.

“I’m not able to work out. Everything is different. About all I can do is look around at athletes who have gone through the same injuries. I have to model myself after them

and know I can come back stronger and faster than ever.”

A member of Canada’s under-20 program for three years, Marton will have to adopt that outlook if she is to realize her dream of playing for Canada in the Olympics.

For London, despite making a favourable impression on head coach John Herdman, Marton didn’t want to commit to the Games’ leadup required by the national program ahead of her studies and team at Penn State.

In 2008, she was among the final cuts for the Beijing-bound Canadian team.

“I have to realize at this point there are three years until the World Cup in 2015 and four until (the Games in) Rio,” she said. “My goal has always been to be an Olympic athlete. To be so close twice ... it’s tough to give up that dream and not make it. I’ll aim for it again.”

She watched proudly as her friends on the national team overcame a heartbreaking loss to the United States to claim bronze at the Olympics.

“I was so proud watching the game and the effort the girls put out,” said Marton, admitting she viewed the semifinal game in a room full of American teammates.

PENN STATE ATHLETICS

“They really put Canada on the map and showed what Canada can do. I think it will change the way Canada is viewed in soccer and the way soccer is viewed in Canada.”

Marton earned all-Big Ten honours last season in her junior year, helping the Nittany Lions to their 14th-straight conference title. Her presence at the back has been a strong point for the team, which

has climbed from ninth to sixth in the polls after two weeks of play.

“Our year is definitely looking good,” the communications major said. “I felt a month ago I was at my peak — prime and fit. I have to be more patient than ever before. In the past, I’ve played through pain, but this time, I physically can’t.

“At this point, I have to try and stay positive. Obviously, I have days

where I am super bummed out, but having teammates and support around me helps. At the end of the day, it’s still just a knee and I have my health and everything else.”

Despite her injury, Marton will travel with the team for road trips and be stationed on the sidelines for matches.

“I’m still a senior captain, just in a different role,” Marton said.

“I’m taking on more of a coaching role with the defence and acting as another set of eyes.”

Beyond this year, her future at Penn State is undecided, including whether to exercise her option to return next season as a red-shirt senior and begin a masters program.

“They told me I have a full scholarship next year,” she said. “It’s up to me to weigh my options. If it means sacrificing Penn State, then I’ll have to do that.”

The school has been scrutinized heavily in recent months since being rocked by the sex scandal in the football program involving assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

The university’s sports community is working to create a fresh start, she said.

“It’s definitely been a crazy, crazy time at the school, but it is cool to be a Penn State athlete now,” she said. “All the teams have bonded together like never before.”

The slogan “One Team” has replaced the school’s former slogan.

All student athletes on campus — the women’s soccer team is in West Virginia for the weekend — were to run onto the field at Beaver Stadium yesterday with the football team, signifying the solidarity of all student-athletes.

The Ontario Minor Hockey Association approved a proposal last weekend by the York Simcoe Minor Hockey League to revise its playoff format for the 2012-13 season.

Approved as a one-year pilot project, the format will trim the number of teams competing in OMHA playdowns to four per age group and category. Previously, the top eight teams in any league qualified for the playdowns, which produce a regional representative for provincial playoffs. Losers reverted to league playdowns.

The revised format is expected to relieve scheduling congestion in the fall months and extend regular season play by three weeks.

In doing so, it will keep players on the ice longer.

“This is a win for everybody,” said Aurora Minor Hockey Association president Joe Bentolila, who introduced the proposal during the off-season. “This really isn’t about playoffs, but development and keeping kids on the ice. Being eliminated and not playing hockey in early February is absolutely unacceptable.”

Teams that don’t qualify for the OMHA playdowns will instead skate directly into York Simcoe playoffs, now pushed to a later date due to the longer regular season schedule.
