SOFTBALL 2017

ADELPHI SOFTBALL

The Northeast-10 Conference The Northeast-10 Conference is an NCAA Division II conference that was established in 1979. The conference consists of 15 member institutions located throughout the Northeast in the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. With the addition of women’s golf in 2014-15, the NE-10 now sponsors a total of 24 sports.

championship of 2015-16 by finishing the 400 in 51.32, just .03 seconds shy of the meet record. The very next day, Le Moyne defeated Limestone, 8-4, to win its fifth NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship and cap off a perfect 20-0 season. When it came to NCAA postseason selections, the NE-10 once again had another sensational year with 44 teams chosen to participate in national tournaments during the year. In addition, student-athletes from 32 different men’s and women’s golf, swimming and diving, cross country, and indoor and outdoor track & field teams competed for national titles. Of those 44 teams earning NCAA bids, 14 different Northeast-10 institutions were represented. Seven NE-10 teams reached the national semifinal round, while three teams played in their respective sport’s national title game.

The institutions that make up the Northeast-10 are Adelphi University (Garden City, N.Y.), American International College (Springfield, Mass.), Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.), Bentley University (Waltham, Mass.), Franklin Pierce University (Rindge, N.H.), Le Moyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.), Merrimack College (North Andover, Mass.), University of New Haven (West Haven, Conn.), Pace University (Pleasantville, N.Y.), Saint Anselm College (Manchester, N.H.), Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, Vt.), The College of Saint Rose (Albany, N.Y.), Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven, Conn.), Southern New Hampshire University (Manchester, N.H.), and Stonehill College (Easton, Mass.).

It was a record year for the Northeast-10 academically in 2015-16 as well. Five NE-10 institutions achieved a department Academic Success Rate (graduation rate) of at least 90 percent. Four achieved a score of 95 percent or better, ranking them in the top seven nationally. A record 61 percent of the league’s student-athletes were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll in the spring with 243 posting a perfect 4.0 GPA. Another new record was set this summer with the release of Team Academic Excellence awards, as 75 percent of the league’s 292 teams achieved a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. The NE-10 also honored 247 student-athletes as members of its academic all-conference teams during the fall, winter and spring seasons.

The conference’s 15 member institutions are spread geographically from Syracuse, N.Y. to Waltham, Mass. and from Colchester, Vt. to Garden City, N.Y. Many of the members are located in or around the metropolitan areas of Albany, Boston, Manchester, New Haven, Worcester and New York City. The Northeast-10 was proud to welcome New Haven and Adelphi in the conference’s latest expansion, adding to the powerful union of strong academic and athletic institutions. In addition, LIU Post (Brookville, N.Y.) is an associate member of the NE-10 in the sports of field hockey and football.

The Northeast-10 also remains focused on its community endeavors. The conference has built a strong partnership with Team IMPACT, a non-profit organization that matches children with life-threatening illnesses with college sports teams. In 2015, the NE-10 became the first ‘fully-matched’ conference in Division II, as at least one team from each member institution has matched with a Team IMPACT child. More than 60 NE-10 teams currently have matches through Team IMPACT. The conference’s fundraising efforts for Make-A-Wish are also more than any other Division II conference in the country over the past decade.

The Northeast-10 has evolved into a membership committed to competitive athletics programs that emphasize the education, both on and off the field, of more than 6,000 student-athletes. Among the many accomplishments of these institutions are NCAA Division II national championships in women’s basketball, women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s track and field, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving. The conference is coming off another successful year, collecting four national titles in 2015-16. Two champions from the NE-10 were crowned at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships during the winter season. First it was American International’s Chandler Cotton, Jr., Kemani Hume, Leakey Kipkosgei and Chad Miller claiming the men’s distance medley relay title with a time of 9:48.02. Then Merrimack’s Carly Muscaro won the women’s 400-meter dash title with a time of 52.34 the following night.

Through the establishment and enforcement of regulations, the conference aims to encourage policies that enable intercollegiate athletics programs to contribute to and be considered an integral part of the total educational offerings at our member institutions. The Northeast-10 can look to a long history of success including the growth from seven original member institutions to more than double its size 36 years later, the contention for and winning of multiple national championships, and the recognition of student-athlete performances off the field and in the classroom.

Muscaro wasn’t quite finished, however, as she defended her 400-meter dash crown at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship, winning her second individual national

ADELPHI IN THE NCAAS •

• • • • •

Adelphi softball has received a total of 16 invites to the NCAA tournament, five while a Division I program and 11 at its current Division II status. The Panthers’ longest run at national championships came in back-to-back years in 1984 and 1985 where the Brown and Gold placed fifth in the College World Series. The 1982 squad was the first to make the NCAAs, losing in the third game to Western Michigan. Tied for the strongest softball team in Adelphi’s history, the 1984 team made it all the way to the College World Series and finished fifth overall. The 1988 team was the last Panther team to date to make the College World Series. The Brown and Gold had a final ranking of seventh and lost to Nebraska 5-1 In 1990, the Panthers made the Division I tournament one final time. The program made the jump to Division II in 1995. After a 10-year hiatus, the Brown and Gold returned to the NCAA tournament in 2000 - the program’s first appearance at Division II level, under the direction of Head Coach Kate Whalen.

• Three years later, the Panthers returned to the NCAAs and fought their way to the final round, drawing C.W. Post. The Pioneers came out on top, 4-1. • In 2006, the Panthers picked up two wins in the postseason; however, due to inclement weather, the tournament was canceled and finished third in the bracket. • In his only year at the helm, Head Coach Joe Burbridge returned the Brown and Gold to the 2007 tournament, marking the first time since 1988 that the program reached that stage in consecutive years. • Continuing the streak of appearances, Head Coach Paige Smith guided the Panthers back to the 2008 tournament for their 11th appearance as a program. • First-year Head Coach Breanne Nasti guided the Brown and Gold to an East Super Regional appearance, hosted on Janet L. Ficke Field, in 2013 before the Panthers fell in two games to Molloy College. • In her third year, Nasti led the team to its first World Series appearance since 1988. The Panthers won their first game, but dropped the second two to the two teams that would eventually play for the National Championship

ADELPHI SOFTBALL

Softball Team History Adelphi University’s varsity softball program began in 1972 under the direction of Janet L. Ficke, and such began an era not to be matched by any other Adelphi program. In 17 years at the helm of the softball program, Ficke amassed a 362-160-3 record, five NCAA Tournament berths and three College World Series appearances. Ficke, along with coach Kathryn Raub, led the Panthers to their first ever NCAA tournament appearance in 1982. The Panthers returned two years later to claim its first Regional title, and an eventual fifth place in the NCAA College World Series. Adelphi returned to the World Series again in 1985, finishing fifth for the second time. In 1985, coach Ficke turned over the program to Kathryn Raub, staying on as Associate Head Coach. In 1987, Raub was named Northeast Region Coach of the Year. In 1993 Kate Whalen, formerly the assistant softball and volleyball coach at Fairfield University, took over as coach of the Panthers, successfully transitioning the program from Division I to Division II. She has guided the team to ten winning season in her 11 years at Adelphi. Adelphi competed at the Division II level for the first time in 1995, finishing 13-27 overall. Although it faced some East Coast Conference (ECC) teams in the past, Adelphi officially began ECC play that same year. It did not take Adelphi long to earn conference honors. In 1996, Deanna Ivanicki and Terri Moran were named All-ECC and in 1996 coach Whalen was named the ECC Coach of the Year.

In 2001, the Panthers again set a new school record for most wins, with a 34-21 overall record and capped with their second ECAC Mid-Atlantic title in three years. In 2002, host Adelphi finished second to Pace University in the ECAC Tournament and second in the ECC tournament with a 31-18-1 overall record. The 2003 team set a new Division II school record for wins in a season, posting a 35-17 mark. The Panthers made their second-ever NCAA DII Tournament appearance and had four players named to the Northeast region team. No. 2 Adelphi again hosted the ECAC Tournament in 2004, finishing third overall. The Panthers went 27-21 on the season and 19-5 in the ECC to a third place regular season finish. The 2005 Panthers saw their post-season dreams cut short with an early exit in the ECC Tournament to Bridgeport, 1-0. Adelphi (25-16) posted its tenth consecutive 20+ win season and received four All-ECC selection. Junior Amy Delmore was not only named ECC Player of the Year, but earned AllAmerica second team honors for her outstanding performance in 2005. She is just the third Adelphi player to receive AllAmerica recognition and the first since 1988. In October, 2005, after a successful fund-raising campaign, the softball field was renamed Janet L. Ficke Field.

The 1997 team set three milestones, finishing with 30 wins, bringing home its first-ever ECC title with a 8-2 win over C.W. Post and its first ECAC Mid-Atlantic title. In 1999, the team set a new season best, finishing 33-18, for its most successful season to-date since becoming a Division II program. The Panthers finished second at the ECC tournament. The 2000 season marked another first, claiming the program’s first ever ECC Regular season Championship. Adelphi also

made its first NCAA tournament appearance as a Division II program, and the team’s first bid in 10 years. The Panthers, 27-20, finished third at Regionals.

Adelphi returned to the NCAA DII Regional in 2006, finishing third overall. The Panthers won their last tournament game vs. UMass-Lowell, 5-1, but because of rain delays, the Regional was cut short with the winner determined by overall record. Carla Buonviaggio and Amy Delmore earned NCAA Northeast Region All-Tournament honors. Coach Whalen picked up her second ECC Coach of the Year honor for leading her team to a 16-5 league record and a second place finish. Six players

She cracked the 500 strikeouts and 50 wins mark wins, finishing her career with 570 strikeouts and 56 wins. This ranks her second and fourth in Adelphi’s all-time history, respectively.

The Panthers continued their winning tradition in 2007, but this time without the guidance of Kate Whalen who resigned her position after 12 years. In his first two years at the helm of the athletics department, the Panthers continued to set a standard of excellence in the Northeast-10 Conference, winning the school’s second consecutive Presidents’ Cup in 2013-14 before finishing second in 2014-15. In that time, Adelphi claimed seven NE-10 Championships, sent 15 teams to NCAA Tournament play and claimed two NCAA National Championships in women’s lacrosse. In 2015, the softball team reached the Women’s College World Series for the first time as a Division II program, winning the NCAA Division II East 2 Regional on Janet L. Ficke Field before sweeping the Super Regional on the campus of top-seeded Southern New Hampshire. In the classroom, 12 student-athletes have been recognized as CoSida Capital One Academic All-District I Team honorees, including five Academic All-Americans from the men’s lacrosse (Nick Watson), women’s lacrosse (Devan Crimi, Alexa Froccaro), women’s soccer (Taylor Groth) and women’s basketball (Kelly Mannix) programs. Furthermore, seven teams earned the NE-10 Team Academic Excellence Awards in 2013-14, while the softball program posted the highest GPA across all three NCAA Divisions; the program followed that up as one of four Panther teams to win an Academic Excellence Award in 2014-15, recording the highest GPA in the history of the award. The funds raised at these special events reached record levels, and membership in the Panther Club, the department’s major friendand-fundraising arm, also doubled in 2015 to nearly 800 members. McCabe has been instrumental in creating several new positions in the department, beginning with the addition of a varsity women’s golf program and the hiring of Keith Ferrara as the first full-time strength and conditioning coach. In addition, the department created a new strength and conditioning center inside the Center for Recreation and Sports which features all the amenities required for a first-class program. Central Suffolk, with beautiful forests and natural inlets, the world’s largest factory outlet center and a huge water park.

There are five distinctive regions in Long Island North Shore, otherwise known as the Gold Coast, with dozens of historic sites dating back to colonial days and Gatsby-era mansions .

North Fork, with an array of vineyards, waterfront ports and farm stands.

South Shore, the Island’s spectator sports and entertainment center, with world-famous Jones and Fire Island Beaches, and home to the New York Islanders.

South Fork, widely known as “The Hamptons,” with its pristine beaches and exclusive villages.
