President’s Report Happy New Year to all club members and welcome all new members who have joined the club in the past year. It may be appropriate to remind ourselves that all the club members are like-minded people who love the Austin 7s, enjoy the social connection, friendship and club outings, and enjoy the privileges and financial benefits offered by a government registered vintage car club. Enjoying the government privileges will obviously come with responsibility. The club has to be run properly and be up to date with any of the latest changes in law and regulations. Many of you are aware that a number of car clubs have been deregistered for failing to comply. Having been the club president for the last 12 months, I have come to realise how much work is actually required to run the car club which is also doubling up as a social club. The yearly stock take of spare parts, for example, took more than a man-day to complete. Fortunately, the club committee and many club members are enthusiastic and generous with their time and energy making the running of the club enjoyable, interesting and easy. The Austin 7 club has held the AGM in December 15, and the 2015 office bearers and committee members were re-elected to run the club for another year. If the past year of variety of activities, which many of you had participated and enjoyed, was any indication, 2016 will be just as good if not better. The 2016 program has been published, and there will be more overnight trips this year. Two country members, the Moyes and the Theyers, have already organised two weekends away during the coming year at Crookwell (Potato Festival) and Oberon (Flowers Festival)) respectively. A reminder also for the 2017 Austin 7 National Rally to be held at Toowoomba in April, 2017. Details of the rally is on page 14, please contact Maureen if you need an application form.

Camel Poo in the Car Park Q. What is the difference between a camel and an Austin Seven

that has to do with Austin Sevens. I will get to that, but first I must explain the difficulties we faced in traversing the extremely inhospitable desert sand dunes and swales of the Gibson Desert while existing on rationed and precious water. The ability of the camels to carry huge loads which included water and food for the party of 9 was truly amazing, with the sad knowledge that there would be no water available to the camels who would have to survive thirty days of hard slog across the sand without a drink.

Christmas Function

A. Not much

This I learned when I joined a famous cameleer and explorer on a thirty day expedition across the Gibson Desert. Camels are unusual beasts, not unlike Austin sevens. They don’t always want to start in the mornings, don’t Add alwaystext wanthere to go where you want them to go and often break down in the most difficult places. I set out on the 2005 desert expedition as an assistant cameleer with Andrew Harper who has made some extraordinary expeditions through the desert country of Australia on both scientific and exploratory adventures. The most amazing behaviour those desert animals have drawn me to appreciate their habits and needs, and to the extent of their truly admirable abilities. You may ask what

Page 8

The reason for the trip emanated from the historic claims of an early explorer of a water soak that he found which may have existed beneath the sand from eons before. Many early explorers and adventurers have met untimely failure in crossing Australia’s deserts due to the inability to source the critical ingredient for survival... Water. Having spent our long days traversing the previously uncharted areas of the desert using the only available

Camel Poo in the Car Park information gleaned from earlier reports and satellite maps, we were confronted with some difficult and seemingly insurmountable problems. One such occasion forced an unwanted stop when one camel fell and was injured therefore unable to carry his load, and another camel ate poison bush which caused him to nearly die. These camels loads of three hundred kilos were shared among the remaining animals and we were once again under way and able to continue the journey .

amount of maintenance, very much like the Austin Sevens of earlier times as well as the ones that still survive today.

Presentation PresentationDay Day

As this was not my first desert camel journey, having previously trekked with Andrew Harper across the Simpson Desert two years previously, I was acutely aware of the danger and difficulties of facing the desert extremes. The Simpson Desert was of very different topography with incredible daily changes to the colour and variations of the endless sand dunes, some 40 metres high. Adventure is not for the faint hearted or the fearful even though the privations may at first seem unmanageable. Living in the desert without water to wash might be unthinkable to most people but becomes easier the longer you face the shortcomings as a group and are reliant on each other for success. Many earlier explorers faced similar difficulties when the newly invented motor car became another method for transporting stuff and people through the inhospitable central parts of Australia. The early Austin Sevens were renowned for some of the seemingly crazy attempts to do the seemingly impossible in the seemingly impassable parts of our country. It was at the end of my Gibson Desert trek while preparing for 700 Km trip back to Alice Springs for a desperately needed bath when I came upon another adventurer, (Graham Burgess) who was waiting to take my thirsty camels on yet another trek across the Great Sandy Desert. How could I have known we were almost neighbours where we lived back in NSW. The fellow turned out to be a vintage car buff who became an Austin Seven owner and a friend. The more I learned about his Austin Seven the more I realised how much they had in common with camels. My camels have carried difficult loads through difficult terrain with only the most modest

Since travelling in Graham’s Austin Seven through rain and cold and climbing what seemed unclimbable hills as well as almost melting the brakes down the other side I have come to understand the nature of these little cars, and liken them to my loveable and indefatigable camels. I still maintain the incredible similarities between Austin Sevens and camels. They don’t always want to do what you want them to do but I have learned to love them in the very same way. They are not the prettiest or the fastest , they are not the most desirable means of transport , they are not the easiest to get on with some times ,but just like my camels of the desert they are reliable in the extreme. Next time I cross a hot and inhospitable desert I will still choose a camel over an Austin Seven but when I get home I feel I am probably more welcome at a shopping centre in an Austin Seven than I might be on a camel. The little cars are known to drop some oil about the place, (which you can always blame somebody else), but it may be a little more difficult to blame somebody else for the camel poo in the car park. Who knows when I will get an Austin seven of my own so I guess for now I will have to rely on the camels. At least I will be well practiced at getting started, as well as working out how to stop while all the time annoying other road users by going so slow. Meanwhile I wait for my chance to become an Austin Seven owner, (read: Austin Seven Nut) Elaine Taylor NSW Austin Seven Club

Christmas Party and Presentation Day Sunday 29th November 2015 was an important date in the busy diary of the Austin Seven Club of NSW – our annual Christmas Party. In recent years the party has been celebrated at Macarthur Grange Function Centre and Twin Creeks Function Centre, Luddenham. In 2015 our hosts were Paul and Sandra Boatwright who made available their beautiful home at Prestons. As the weather was hot and humid the swimming pool provided welcome relief for the four girls Jessica, Kate, Jackie and Emma. Twenty five guests enjoyed refreshments, repasts and reminiscences in the outdoors covered area while a bank of overhead fans ensured the comfort of all present. Members and guests travelled from near and far, and included Doug Veel, a visitor from Victoria, members Ross and Robyne Bell from Milton, guests of President Paul, and Amy Pui, Chen Lim and Choo Lee Khor, members Grahame and Maria Burgess from Speers Point and Elaine Taylor from Warners Bay, Lal Etherington and member Irene. Townsend Catering provided a delicious three course roast dinner with all the trimmings – more than we could possibly eat. Events of the day flowed seamlessly thanks to the planning and skills of the Committee and helpers. After lunch the mood was relaxed and various awards were presented to club members for their efforts throughout the year. As the day was drawing to a close, we were shown Paul Boatwright’s collection of working Go Karts. Paul described some of the intricacies of these high-tech machines including suspension adjustment, tyre selection and engine monitoring. Our thanks go to our gracious hosts Paul and Sandra for their contribution in making the Christmas Party a memorable day for all. Russell Linfoot

Christmas and Presentation Timeline Party of motoring history Day The following is an abridged timeline of motoring history, which primarily concentrates on developments in Europe and North America and covers the progressive introduction of motorised road transport from the end of the 17th Century until 2008. 1679 █ Practical French scientist Denis Papin invents the pressure-cooker or Digester. 1690 █ Many before him have experimented with single charges of gunpowder as a means of moving a piston in a bore but, Denis Papin publishes his ideas for harnessing steam as an alternative, to achieve repeated cycles of movement. In doing so, he recognises the potential for a mechanical alternative to animals for mobilising carriages. He goes on to build the first steam engine, which is used to pump water to a canal running between Kassel and Karlshaven in Germany.

Papin died in London in abject poverty and complete anonymity. █ Thomas Newcomen, an ironmonger and blacksmith of Dartmouth, England, patents the Atmospheric Steam Engine and, together with John Calley starts to build and sell engines for pumping water out of mines. 1765 █ James Watt, while engaged in repairing a Newcomen engine, comes up with several improvements which substantially change its method of operation and increase its efficiency. In so doing he lays a firm foundation for the design of all steam engines yet to come. 1769 █ In Paris, Nicolas Joseph Cugnot, a military engineer, demonstrates a selfpropelled steam vehicle - the first on record. The French government requests Cugnot to design and build a larger vehicle, capable of moving large amounts of artillery.

through Camborne, Cornwall. Four days later it is destroyed by fire. 1803 █ Trevithick builds a second steam-powered carriage, which makes several successful runs through the streets of London. Unfortunately it also frightens horses and kindles considerable public hostility. 1805 █ In 1804 Oliver Evans, builds the world's first amphibious vehicle, Orukter Amphibolas, a steam powered dredger on wheels, for the Philadelphia Health Service. In July of 1805 it makes a one and a half mile journey from Central Square to the banks of the Schuykill. It weighs 20 tons and is powered by a 5 HP twin cylinder beam engine driving both the paddle and 2 wheels. With no method of steering on land, the vehicle is much more successful as a boat.

1807 █ In Switzerland, Francois Isaac de Rivaz builds, and demonstrates the first working 1698 █ English military engiinternal combustion engine.
