President’s Report Time flies, and we are now nearing May! It seems a lot has happened in the past few months and our club members have certainly enjoyed a handful of memorable runs. Unfortunately, due to personal commitments, Amy and I were not able to attend to all the runs. Thank you to those members who have kindly provided the editor with some delightful writeup of the events, it is always interesting to read the stories from someone else’s perspective. Special thanks go to Mervyn and Maureen for their tireless effort in organizing all the events and making sure that everything goes according to plan. I would also like to thank Kevin Lewis and Brad Sheringham for coming on board the committee, the efforts they put in and their commitment to the club are greatly appreciated. Of course, not to forget Russell Linfoot for his on-going support to the club. Kevin is currently updating and improving our website to accommodate several new features, as well as developing a user-friendly database to manage our membership. A number of members are actively using our Austin 7 Facebook, and in fact Brad has been sharing his linkages to Austin 7 global interested groups. One interesting one, on Facebook u-tube video of Austin 7 in mud trial (https:// www.facebook.com/groups/540559149473900/787232694806543/) begs the question why do I need to have a 4 WD ! Members are encouraged to use the Facebook and explore so many interesting and wonderful things about Austin 7 through the cyberspace. Special thanks also go to Paul Boatwright for his interest in Facebook. He is an active and innovative club member planning to make a series of u-tube videos on how to make a good vintage car engine. The first video on how to make an Austin 7 cam has already been completed and uploaded on the u-tube ( https://www.facebook.com/vintageengineworks/videos/224697694742222/ UzpfSTU0MDU1OTE0OTQ3MzkwMDo3ODcyMzI2OTQ4MDY1NDM/ ). Well done, Paul and Stewart. As a social club, we welcome any input from all members and we appreciate those who actively participate in all club activities. Happy motoring, Paul Pui
Alice Springs
The Heart of Central Australia Following the Nullarbor trip, our fellow member adventurers, Graham Burgess & Elaine Taylor, will have another adventure in the planning, this time taking the Austin up North to Alice Springs sometime in May this year. Interested members are welcome to contact Graham directly.

CARnivale – Australia Day 26th January 2018
This was the third occasion that CARnivale had been held in Parramatta Park since the city venue along Hyde Park and Macquarie Street became unavailable because of the closure of George Street for the installation of light rail between Kingsford and Circular Quay. The agreement between Sydney Council and Parramatta Council was for three years, but it is to be renegotiated this year and it seems unlikely that the event will return to the City. Parramatta now regard the display as an integral part of their Australia Day celebrations and will be determined for it to remain so. Seven Austin 7s joined around 350 other pre-1988 Classic cars being displayed in the Park outside Government House, together with an excellent display of fire engines from the Museum of Fire in Penrith and a number of Veteran cars from the turn of the last century. There was also a display of classic racing cars and motor bikes. Club members attending were Kevin and Barbara Fahey in their 1937 Ruby, Trevor Hails in his 1932 Deluxe Saloon,

Eric an Anne Bourne in their 1928 Chummy, Anthony Harte in his 1929 Meteor, Kevin Harte in his 1932 Trade Van, Penny and Helen Harte in their 1929 Roadster and Brian and Deirdre Haywood in their 1933 Deluxe Box Saloon, ‘Annie’. Tom Harte brought up the rear in his 1982 Mazda RX7. We all met on Victoria Road before driving to the convoy assembly point in the grounds of St Ioannis Greek Orthodox Church in Parramatta for breakfast provided by the Rotary Club of Granville. The public were given access at 10am and suddenly the whole display area was packed with people. There was a steady flow of visitors all day and the little cars attracted a lot of attention and interest. The Australia Day festivities and attractions in the Park were the same as last year. Hot Air Balloons, an extensive area with stalls offering a large selection of food and from many ethnic origins, the open-air stage with a continuous programme of activities and music through till the fireworks at 9pm and a large fun fare with rides for the kids. Old Government House was open for those who wished to enjoy a guided tour.
Page 8
CARnivale – Australia Day 26th January 2018
The weather was hot and humid, but we found a good spot under the shade of the trees close to the cars and everyone was able to relax and enjoy the day while keeping an eye on the cars. At the end of the day after the public had been excluded from the display area, we had a surprise visit from the Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, who was being escorted by Geoff Lee the member for Parramatta on a ‘meet and greet’ tour of the Park. She spotted Anne Bourne in our group who had taught her from the age of five and who lives just round the corner from the Berejiklian family home where Gladys’ mother still lives. It was a very warm greeting and some of us were invited to have a picture with the Premier and Geoff Lee. bnh 7/2/2018

Berrima Street Parade – Australia Day Australia Day - Friday, 26 January 2018 The Australia Day weekend at Berrima turned out to be another great day for those club members who went. A lot of organization by the Wingecarribee Shire culminated to a day of activities including a Citizenship Ceremony, announcement of the winners of Citizen and Young Citizen of the year and a special address by the Australia Day Ambassador. There were some 50 Market stalls, rides for the kids and other fun activities. The highlight of the day was the street parade, The Grand Parade, consisting
Page 10
Berrima Street Parade – Australia Day various classic cars, local bands, historic tractors and our little Austin 7s that drew a lot of attention. After weeks of liaison with the council and submitting the correct paperwork by Maureen, our cars were lined up eagerly for the parade, there were Graham Burgess, Ian Reece and Lynette Falken, Mark and Joanne Wellington, Paul & Amy Pui, Paul Boatwright, Katy, Jackie and Emma. Other club cars not in the parade were Mervyn Boatwright’s red Austin and Trevor Hails. Our stay was at Mittagong RSL/Springs Resort, came dinner time, table was pre-booked and everyone tucked into the beautiful meals on offer with plenty to drink. Those that were energetic enough retreated to the lounge area for a big dose of music performed by 2 musicians till late. Various guests in the resort went for the dance while we had an interesting local lady who tried whole night to enlighten Mervyn with some local histories.

Saturday, 27 January, 2018 A fun day was being organized starting with a short ride to Bundanoon to Miles Felstead‘s property. The club provided a BBQ after a tour to the garage. Afternoon was spent with everyone relaxing and chatting. After lunch, we were invited to visit Steven Dermer Bennett’s property. Dermer is now a new member.

TWILIGHT RUN February 18th, 2018
The day started out like any other for our Austin 7 Twilight Run. Give the car a quick wash before the run, check of the vitals; water…...check; oil…….check; petrol…..top it up. All done and ready to go. Nothing was going to stop Aaron and me from going on the Twilight Run. The time had come to drive to Bankstown to meet up with the other intrepid members. It usually takes me about 35 mins in my modern to get to Bankstown, but I need to make sure that I leave in plenty of time as the Austin isn’t one for sticking to the speed limit (you know what I mean) so I need to allocate about 50 mins. I threw Aaron into the front of the car with me and off we drove to the assigned meeting place in Bankstown. We were met by Mark Wellington and his wife Joanne and Graham Burgess & Elaine Taylor in their Austins and Trevor in his nice modern (BMW convertible). Funny how there were some members who doubted that it really was Trevor’s car. Maureen arrived and said that Merv and Paul should have been here already. Alas, they weren’t. The allocated departure time had come and gone, but everyone was asking, “where is Merv and Paul?” After a short time, we could hear the racing of the Austin engines heading toward us and they arrived in a hurry, having just finished being at the workshop. After the obligatory handouts (just so we didn’t get lost), we were off. Each of us had a sheet listing the directions and to make it interesting, we had some questions to answer, so we needed to pay attention throughout the run. Thankfully I was lucky enough to have the capable services of young Aaron to navigate for me. Off we go and started heading south from Bankstown to Padstow where our first stop was to fellow member, Ross Warner’s house. We were greeted by Ross, his wife Kim and their family with a nice cool lemonade. Ross had pushed his A7 project out of the garage and we were able to view the extensive work that he has put into creating a body, which is made of aluminium. Ross explained the work still to go into his car and answered numerous questions about the project. The men than gravitated into the garage where we were in awe of the equipment he has available to work on his A7 with. It was then time to push off and continue on the run. When I say push off, I actually mean ‘push off’. I have heard that it used to happen many years ago, but never have I witnessed this unbelievable sight. There was a certain A7 which had been parked outside of Ross’ house, which, for some reason wouldn’t start due to battery issues. Anyway, while seated in my A7, I suddenly saw the wife of the owner of the car, get out of the passenger seat and walk behind the A7, place her 2 hands onto the rear of the car and then start to push it along the road. Before I could say, “do you want a hand”, the A7 coughed spluttered and within a few metres was brought back to life. I said to the man’s wife, “I should have got a photo of that,” to which she replied, “not on your life”. I thought about preserving my life and therefore was hesitant in trying to capture a similar shot later. Ross and his wife jumped into his Porsche while his daughter and granddaughter drove his E-Type Jaguar and off we set on our run. The directions had us heading to Oatley where we drove into Oatley Park. At this point, we drove to a lookout where we were able to cast our gaze over the waterways below. Merv spoke of the time he bought his first A7 from a guy who lived over the other side of the river. We drove a bit further on and stopped at another lookout. It was certainly nice to be out of the sun and getting some breeze. We then returned back to our cars and headed toward Alfords Point Rd. There was one small deviation, however, where I was given a wrong direction and took a side route onto the
Page 15
TWILIGHT RUN February 18th, 2018
Old Illawarra Hwy, through a roundabout and then back on the main road again. This meant the cars following me also followed. The weather on the day was very hot, and the little A7 seemed to be coping OK…….well, that was until we turned left onto Menai Rd where my A7 communicated to me that it had had enough. Trevor, who was following in his BMW, said he saw a puff of smoke come out the back but didn’t know if it was engine smoke or steam. I wasn’t sure what the problem was at this stage, but I had a number of options to consider, one of which was the possibility that I was not going to go any further on the run. I also thought that I may have to leave the A7 on the side of the road overnight and come back the next day with my trailer (I thought it would be ok sitting out front of the fire station, so there was little chance the locals would incinerate it). I was then able to roll along the roadway and push it up onto the footpath outside the Fire Station (very fortuitous) as upon inspection, I found that the radiator had overheated and the little A7 had told me it wanted to cool down and needed a big drink of water. So out with the spare container of water, and with the help of others, we cooled her down and refilled the radiator. At this point, my wife Irish arrived as she was meeting up with us at Sutherland for dinner. After a short time, I was able to re-start the car, with fingers crossed, and continued on the run to Sutherland (with Irish covering my A, just in case). Some of the hills we encountered, were long and steep, and the A7 suffered a bit of power loss which nearly required me throwing the gearbox back into 1st gear. Thankfully, that wasn’t required and we were able to make it to the fish and chip shop for the long awaited meal. All the other members had already arrived and had placed their orders. Now it was my turn. A nice family pack of seafood and chips was ordered along with some long overdue drinks, which I downed straight away. It was time to head off to the park to consume our dinner, when Maureen was seen to be in a flurry about something. It was that she couldn’t locate Merv. Before a search and rescue party was arranged, Paul and I suggested that he may be in the local alcohol establishment located on the opposite corner. Just before a search and rescue party was initiated, Merv appeared from the front door of the pub and came back to the take away shop. I asked him if the glasses were nice and cool but he said something about not drinking and driving.
Page 16
TWILIGHT RUN February 18th, 2018
At this point, Mark and Joanne left the group and headed home for a family function with everyone else heading back across the bridge and down to Woronora where we drove into the Burnum Burnum Sanctuary and took up residence at one of the covered tables. There was a children’s play ground nearby, where Paul’s 3 girls, my 2 kids and Ross’ granddaughter were happy to play while the adults engaged in discussing……politics, religion, world peace and of course, Austin 7’s. The sun was starting to get lower over the hill, so at 7pm, it was decided that we all should head home as we didn’t have the provision of LED lights on our cars. I made sure that I topped up the radiator again, and felt that I would be able to get home in 1 hour without the need to stop. Getting my A7 ready, I noticed some activity going on in the front of the E-Type. Upon inquiring, I was told that the ignition key had broken off and that Ross was in the throws of trying to remove the broken piece out of the ignition. The light was failing, so I gave my farewells and headed home, closely followed by my backup/support vehicle. I don’t know if the E-Type was restarted and driven home, or if there is a new advertisement for it in Carsales.com.au. Anyway, the trip home went well until about 2kms from home when I realised that the little A7 had succumbed to yet the same fate……engine overheating and radiator running dry. I was able to pull into a service station where, with a bit of time and cool water, I was able to finish my day off, getting home just after 8pm. I don’t know why, but it seems that what was anticipated as a quiet Twilight Run, turned out to be a bit stressful and it was one of those rare occasions that I ended up going to bed very early as I was extremely tired after the afternoon’s adventure. A big thank you to Maureen for organising the run and for everyone else who came along in their A7 or modern. PS….who won the guessing competition? Many thanks Kevin Lewis Vice PresidenAustin 7 Club NSW Inc

MUDGEE Day 3 – 20/03/2018 On leaving Parklands Resort we headed towards Windamere Dam as we travelled through scenic bushland, then we saw the picturesque Windamere Dam on our left. We stopped for morning tea and had a close up inspection of the dam. As we were already running late for a private inspection of the Kandos Museum, we needed to move quickly to arrive on time at the museum. We were met and welcomed by Fiona MacDonald at the Museum. Fiona explained in detail the history of Kandos, the Cement Works and the Museum that is now in the control and ownership of the Kandos Museum volunteers. The improvements to the Museum since the visit by the Austin 7 National Rally group in 2007 are enormous even down to the new museum entrance and landscaped gardens. Fiona gave our group an insight into the history of the Cement Works and what it did for Kandos. Photos appearing in the magazine were taken by Mike Oakey and forwarded to the Club by Fiona MacDonald. We then travelled to Rylstone where we all enjoyed our Pub lunch, then walked around town and one member found a lovely gift shop to spend money. Then we headed to Lue. Lue was once the centre of the Gwabegar Railway Line (now closed) situated between Rylstone and Mudgee. Kath took a few great photos of the Austin 7’s parked outside the Old Historic Lue Hotel. As we started our return to Mudgee, we made a stop at the famous Rylstone Olive Press where we sampled many of their olive oils followed by a very impressive guided tour from when the olive leaves the tree and starts its journey to be transformed into olive oil and then bottled for sale. On returning to Parklands Resort, a decision was made to return to the Golf Club for dinner and amazingly we had no difficulty in navigating our way there and after another enjoyable meal and great company, we found our way home with no problems. Day 4 – 21/03/2018 On leaving Parklands Resort we travelled on Putta Bucca road to the Wetlands on the edge of the Cudgegong River at Mudgee. The weather up till now had been brilliant but today the wind was extreme and there were no birds visible in the Wetlands, guess they were smarter than us. We then travelled to the Honey Haven, a very interesting place where there was plenty of local honey to sample and purchase. This is now a delightful place to visit displaying so many Bee Products and we were given a demonstration of some of these products and of course spent money. Since our visit in 2007, this haven has become a great place to indulge yourself with scrumptious homemade cakes etc. this has become an exciting place to visit when in Mudgee. You can’t visit Mudgee without visiting at least a few wineries. One winery we visited was Robert Stein Winery where there is a Motor Bike Museum, this of course, the guys found very interesting. We lunch at the Award Winning Mudgee Bakery & Café followed by an enjoyable walk through Lawson Park located on the edge of the Cudgegong River. Tonight we decided to again dine at the Golf Club we have now been accepted as locals at this small Club and I’m sure we could now find our way there and back blind folded.

MUDGEE Day 5 – 22/03/2018. Leaving our Austin 7’s at the Parklands Resort, Kath, John, Mervyn and myself headed off in our car to visit Hill End. The decision was taken not to drive the Babies today due to roads having extreme descents and then continuous climbing, mile after mile and these conditions would have been stressful for the drivers during our travels today regardless of which road we were to take. We had a great experience, stopping at several lookouts in the Hill End area. A new Heritage Centre has been built opposite the Hill End Pub and is definitely a must to visit when in Hill End. So much history is in the Centre and so much to learn of the difficult times families faced in the gold rush days in Hill End. Another decision was taken to spend our last evening in Mudgee at the Golf Club again. On Friday morning we said our good and headed home after a great week in the Mudgee Area. Mudgee is referred to as a Nest in the Hills. Maureen Boatwright Acknowledgement: Special thanks go to the Secretary of the Kandos Museum Fiona MacDonald and the photos taken by Mike Oakey who were also outstanding in the way they presented the history of Kandos to our club members.
