All a lovely day. Thankinyou all who organised, enjoyed cars were in place by 10am when the public were allowed Joanne Wellington to come into the display area. Overall it went very smoothly and there was a steady stream of visitors circulating through the display area all day. The number of cars was probably a little less than half that which have been displayed in the city, but it seems very likely that the numbers will increase again when it is seen to be a success. There were many activities and displays in the Park, including early morning hot air balloon flights and lots of activities for kids with a special programme of presentations on the stage all afternoon. There was plenty of space for Clubs to enjoy a social time with bbqs and picnics under the trees; this was not possible along Macquarie Street. It was a successful day and it could develop into a great classic car display depending on how Australia Day in Parramatta is promoted in future years and ease of access for the general public. bnh 1/2/2016

TheKatie Cobb(9&yrs Coold) Museum was opened in 1965 by WRF By and Jackie (7 yrs old) Boatwright (Bill) Bolton to display his collection of horse drawnvehicles and memorabilia associated with Australia’s legendary coaching company which was started in 1854 by Americans, Freeman Cobb, John Peck, James Swanton and John Lamber. In 1981 the Museum was destroyed by fire, but the vehicles were saved by local volunteers and firefighters. Following the fire, the Bolton collection was donated to the Queensland Museum by Bill Bolton’s daughter Jenny. The Museum was rebuilt on the site of the old Toowoomba Showgrounds and was opened as the current Cobb & Co Museum in 1987.

Australia Day A7 National Tour Toowoomba All participants were able to both browse the assembled A7 cars and also walk through the Museum to see a wonderful display of horse drawn carriages and other vehicles used during the early days of settlement and through the Cobb & Co era. Wayne Styles gave two lectures to enthusiastic audiences on the life of Herbert Austin in the Museum area.

Lunch was provided at the Museum for those that had booked and this proved to be an opportunity to meet up with old friends and meet new members of the Austin 7 family. During the morning there was a Ladies High Tea served at the historic Toowoomba Railway Station. All those attending dressed in the Tour theme of the Roaring 1920s and there were some wonderfully colourful dresses and hats on display later in the day down at the Cobb & Co Museum. By all accounts the event, which was booked out, was very successful and a magnificent High Tea was served to the ladies. The whole day was a rousing start to the rest of the Tour. Sunday 9th April, 2017 - Ladies High Tea The ladies High Tea was held at the heritage listed railway station. A group of drivers were organised to take about 55 beautifully dressed ladies to the train station venue. There were to rolls George chicken and salmon sandwiches, quiche, sausage and and Sue McGill for their various delicious cakes. Two roadside assists and a tow back to headquarters were just the norm and he was very happy to help. Thanks again Geoff and another tour detail well planned! Finally, on the road again, I had a few miles to catch up. Once clear of the roadworks on Gowrie Junction Road I was able to make up time to meet up at for morning tea at the Highfields Pioneer Village. The Pioneer Village offered an amazing insight into the emergence of the Darling Downs as a food source for the country, a remarkable display and indeed a magnificent morning tea! From Highfields it was a picturesque 14 mile run to Goombungee for lunch put on by the CWA at Goombungee Public Hall. Goombungee is a quiet country town with a wide main street, a few weatherboard shops, a weatherboard pub boasting a large veranda and friendly locals. Lunch at the hall was a simple affair, but the flavour something to write home about. Something that can only come from fresh country produce and the touch of the CWA. Following lunch there was a tour of the local museum, run by volunteers who were needlessly apologetic

A7 National Tour Toowoomba

Page 20

Austins Over Australia rally 2017 Ipswich Austins Over Australia rally proved a fitting addition to the Queensland Austin Seven national tour held at Toowoomba 2017. 151 Austin’s arrived at Ipswich. From Vans and Sedans to Roadsters and Sports models almost the whole range of Austin’s were represented. The cars behaved well and no serious problems were encountered on the various runs regardless of the sometimes steep and difficult hills, not to mention the brake testing ride down the other side. As at the Toowoomba meet the organisers did a wonderful job in preparing the rally and everybody was amazed at the high standard of preparation that was achieved. New South Wales Austin Seven Club was well represented as was South Australia where it was established the 2019 AOA rally will take place in the magnificent Barossa Valley. Austin’s from 1910 to 1974 were from all around Australia and many were driven long distances while some older cars were trailed. NSW club member Walter Raschle drove his Seven Roaster from Victoria along with Graeme Logan from Victoria club in his Latrobe which is no mean feat for the little cars. Dismantling his car at the motel and re building the engine overnight is something only an Austin Seven man could tackle. Ask Walter how it’s done. Words cannot describe the marvellous dinners and dance parties that were provided at the Ipswich showground. The superb food and music was appreciated by all and was far above expectations. Buses were provided to transport everyone from their motels to the venue which was a few Kms from town but also allowed everyone to enjoy a drink without fear of getting home safely. Walking sticks were abandoned when the music began and many a former old rock and roll fan emerged from the crowd. The professional musician chose the music that old Austin people seemed to remember and some were even singing along while eating dinner. Lovely home made desserts topped the meal and Ipswich Lions Club worked the well patronised bar. No names will be divulged as to which NSW club members were involved in the wild Hokey Pokey and the Conga Line going around the hall. Old Austin Seven drivers can still meet the challenge on the dance

Page 21

Austins Over Australia rally 2017 floor (But maybe need a massage next day) No stone was left unturned in giving everybody a great time and a memorable experience. More glasses were raised for Sue and George McGill whose wedding anniversary was the excuse for another drink. When the buses arrived for the home journey some were still on the dance floor and reluctant to leave. Others were exhausted and ready for bed. Ian and Victoria Theyers topped the best dressed couple at all the dinners and managed to set a new dress standard for the future Austin Seven events. The Vinnie’s and Salvo’s stores are the new wave shopping it seem if we want to reach their standards. Dress to the Fifties night saw some imaginative getups including Micky Mouse who caused the whole crowd to remember the Mouseketeers songs throughout the night. Not a boring dinner night that’s for sure. The lovely Austin Atlantic owned by John Blyth took out the people’s choice and well deserved the award. I was tempted to steal it and take it home as it was a most beautiful car, but then thought No, I might be caught at the next AOA rally and be forced to give it back. Club member Gary Tout was again awarded best Sports Seven as at the Toowoomba meet and also well deserved. Extremely generous sponsors ensured everybody got something to take home from the event. Such small gifts were eagerly grabbed each morning and night at the car number give-aways. Beautiful bags sewn by one local lady club member were the highlight of the gifts but I sadly missed the bags and scored a can of de greaser. Maybe they were telling me something about Austin Sevens do you think? Five years is a long time until the next Austin Seven National meet. Graeme Logan from Victoria gave a short description of what to expect at the next National meet in 2022. Some of us might be too old to travel by then so I suggest you consider attending the next AOA rally planned for Adelaide2019 (Just in case as they say) Every day was a great experience with great weather (As they continually said in Queensland ) “G’day, Great day eh?” Graham Burgess
