President’s Report The club has certainly been busy in the first quarter of this year. 2016 started with Australia Day when many of our club members celebrated the day at two separate events. One was a display and picnic at CARnivale in Parramatta, and the other was a canoe outing at Prince Edward Park, Woronora.

The Twilight Fish and Chip run was interesting as I witnessed the substantial transformation of the old industrial areas of Cabarita, Breakfast Point and Mortlake into modern upmarket residential estates. It has been thirty years since I last crossed the Parramatta River by ferry to Putney and it was amazing to see that the landscape along the river has now changed almost beyond recognition. But although the river landscape has changed, our convoy of Austin 7 cars have stood the test of time, attracting a lot of attention from the onlookers.

The weekend away in early March to the Potato Festival in Crookwell was an interesting event for nine participating Austin 7s and for a number of moderns, thanks to the extraordinary efforts of our country members, Kath and John Moyes. The evening concert, the Potato Festival car display and lots of country town activities including farm visits and fantastic country drives were fabulous. The added experience with “funkhana” on Moyes property and the lunch visit to the historical Taralga were real bonuses.

Also in March, our Newcastle members Gary & Vicki Taut, Graham & Marie Burgess, Elaine Taylor and Graham & Lillian Hatfield organised a run in their local area. We got to enjoy Hatfield’s newly acquired Austin 7, as well as their vast collection of Minis. The convoy of Austin 7s from Sydney and from the Hunter region, together with the Hatfield’s special classic Mini attracted a lot of local attention. The generous morning and afternoon teas provided by the Hatfields and the Burgesses, in addition to the fabulous lunch at the 1887 historical Toronto Hotel just completed the fantastic day.

March Sevening was a fabulous three day trip to Crookwell and a great day was spent in the Newcastle area with local members. Stories and photos of these events can been seen elsewhere in this edition of Baby Torque.

There are exciting events coming up and these include Ladies Day, a progressive morning tea/lunch/ afternoon tea and a 3 day trip in the Add Oberon text area here visiting gardens and many places of interest and indulging in locally grown produce. CARnivale 2016 On Australia Day five Austin Sevens joined six hundred other classic cars for the 2016 CARnivale in Parramatta Park. Kevin and Anthony Harte, Kevin and Barbara Fahey, Brian and Deirdre Haywood and Trevor Hale, but unfortunately, at the last moment neither Eric Bourne or Craig Davies were able to bring their cars to join us.

After 28 years in the Sydney CBD it was always going to be a big challenge to reinvent CARnivale in Parramatta Warren Gracie and to add to the problem the whole event was threatened with a forecast of potential rain and storms.

However, the weather was very kind and after a brief shower in the morning, it turned out to be a glorious day.

We met in the Pirtek Stadium car park at 6.30am ready for the procession to Parramatta Park for setting up the display in the area adjacent to Old Government House. All cars were in place by 10am when the public were allowed to come into the display area.

Overall it went very smoothly and there was a steady stream of visitors circulating through the display area all day. The number of cars was probably a little less than half that which have been displayed in the city, but it seems very likely that the numbers will increase again when it is seen to be a success.

There were many activities and displays in the Park, including early morning hot air balloon flights and lots of activities for kids with a special programme of presentations on the stage all afternoon. There was plenty of space for Clubs to enjoy a social time with bbqs and picnics under the trees; this was not possible along Macquarie Street.

It was a successful day and it could develop into a great classic car display depending on how Australia Day in Parramatta is promoted in future years and ease of access for the general public. bnh 1/2/2016

Australia Day The weather on Australia Day at Prince Edward park was good, slightly cloudy but dry. After picking up 2 pre-order canoes from the hiring shed and Mervyn Boatwright Kayak, Mervyn Boatwright , Paul Pui and Russell linfoot got in one and Paul Boatwright, Jackie and Katie Boatwright got in one while Jessica Boatwright was kayaking. They all rowed up Woronora river about a couple of kilometres , and stopped at jockeys cap to watch a couple of young teenagers jumping off the cliff to Add text here into the river.

Christmas Function

It wasn’t long before Jackie and Katie wanted to go the loo. When Katie got out of the canoe something sharp was between her toe so Katie jumped back in the canoe to find a fish between her toe. While Katie was screaming Jackie started swimming in the river but Jessica also want to swim so Dad towed Jessica kayak on the back of our canoe as we were heading Back to the park for lunch Other Austin 7 member at the park were laughing when Paul Pui thought he had a great rowing group. Little did he know he was doing most of the rowing in front, every time when he turned his head back to look, Melvyn and Russell were rowing , but as soon as he turned his head to look at the front , his partners were resting their oars and enjoying the scenery.

Jackie and Katie wanted to jumped of the bridge into river so they did. About 10 minutes later Jessica started jumping with them.

Twilight Fish & Chips Run On a fine & sunny Sunday afternoon 21-2-16 in company with the Vauxhall Club members we set off from NRMA car park in North Strathfield and following a set of route instructions proceeded via Concord, Breakfast Point to Mortlake.

We then boarded the Mortlake to Putney vehicular ferry.

At this point a cry for help was heard from Helen whose A7 would not start somewhere in Concord so Russell and Warren went back, found the car and did a quick check and found the starter was not responding. The crank handle started the motor so we were all on our way back to the ferry. On the ferry we found out that Helen’s starter was working again so a trip through Putney brought us to Victoria Rd at Ryde.

From here we proceeded to Drummoyne where we found the nominated fish shop on the busy Lyons Road. There was a great variety of seafoods in this seemingly recently set up business.

From here we found our way to Banjo Paterson Park nicely located on the banks of the Parramatta River. At this park were Maureen and Mervyn Boatwright, Kevin and Trish Lewis and daughter Tara, Graham Burgess and brother in law Ken Constantine , Helen Lewis & Carolyn Thompson Amy and Paul Pui, Russell Linfoot and Warren Geacie, Mark and Joanne Wellington, who all enjoyed their fish and chips. Also at least a dozen members from the Vauxhall Club also gathered with their picnic hampers.
