President’s Report It is now in mid-winter and I am already looking forward to the warmer weather in this year’s President’s run near Bungendore area. I hope many of you can join us as it will be a fantastic weekend with runs, visits and activities organized exclusively for us by our country members, John Moyes and Kath Cole, many through their personal contacts. It was exciting to see Russell Linfoot’s Royal blue 1928 Austin 7 Roadster finally on the road. With only one short stop it raced along like expected to the Christmas in July BBQ at Bundanoon. I can just imagine how excited Russell must have been but like all Austin 7 drivers, they are always composed and cool! We have a few members of the club who have gradually not being able to join in the runs due to health or other reasons. With the log book system, people might be tempted to do a few runs by themselves which is fine but we should also bear in mind that for a club to run successfully, we encourage participation from members as much as possible. In the last three months, our club members visited the Old Auto Rubber Australia in Penrith, which has brought our knowledge up to date on how some of the door seals and variety of gaskets are manufactured. Our Christmas in July was spent in a private farm in Bundanoon, where the owners have sheds of cars, many are of unusual collections. The small entrance fees levied at the entrance gate are for the charity BBQ in support of the Kids’ Research Institute at Westmead Children’s Hospital. We feel quite privileged to have been able to visit these unusual places. The weather was also very kind to us when we took part in the National Heritage Day by visiting the Campbelltown Steam & Engine Museum. We welcome our new member, Robert Byrne. Happy motoring, Paul Pui

A Visit to the Old Auto Rubber Australia As usual, Maureen Boatwright has organised a wonderful visit to this treasure house in Penrith, New South Wales. The Old Auto Rubber Australia did not sound much before the visit, at least to some, but it turned out to be an amazing place, a MUST-HAVE address for all vintage and classic cars lovers. This factory was specially open for us on the Friday evening of May 4, 2018 which was a perfect 22C day and cool evening. Despite traffic congestion getting there for some, it was all worth it. A very generous BBQ and drinks were also provided for us by the business partners, Katy McClelland and “Jono” McAnally. In attendance by Austin 7 were Bob and Judith Riches, their son Edward and grandson Connor, Paul Boatwright, Russel Linfoot, Paul and Amy Pui, Kevin Lewis, Ron Selig, Merv and Maureen Boatwright, Stewart Sheldon. Many of us in Austin 7 club have visited Peter Jackson of Old Era Services in Gloucester NSW during one of our club runs a few years ago. Katy and Jono have bought over the rubber business and continue in Penrith NSW to make quarter vent seals, door seals, windscreen seals and any old parts in a car that is made of rubber. We were shown how they made the seals using hot-melt press techniques and the plastic clips using a 3-D printer. The working of laser printer is also very interesting. Being a relatively ‘young’ business running on “aged old” molding techniques, it is wonderful to see that they are also introducing modern techniques such as laser printing and 3-D printing to make old parts, and using traditional butyl rubber to high performance polymer such as Neoprene and fluoropolymer for a variety of fit-for-purpose applications. Being a young energetic team, they are also constantly developing new fabrication techniques and increasing new product range to cater for old car market.
Page 6
A Visit to the Old Auto Rubber Australia After a year in business, they now make a large variety gaskets and carry a variety of metal or plastic clips, some made locally using their newly acquired 3-D printer. They have now expanded their product range to include electrical products such as switches, trailer plugs, glass fuses, ceramic fuses, blade and mini blade fuses, 12-volt relay and much more. Having visited the place, I believe that the contact address is a MUST-HAVE for all veteran, vintage and classic car lovers in this state, if not this country. The Old Auto Rubber Australia, open 6 days a week, is located a 1/44 Peachtree Rd, Penrith 02-4721 1414, or Katy can be contacted 04518 859 922, if anyone needs any part from the company. Paul Pui

National Heritage Day Campbelltown Steam & Machinery Museum - May 20, 2018 A glorious day it was for our National Heritage run to the Campbelltown Steam & Machinery Museum. Attended the run were Mervyn & Maureen Boatwright with their red pram Austin, Paul Boatwright with daughters Jacky and Emma in their Chummy, Russell Linfoot, Mark Wellington and his blue Chummy and Paul & Amy Pui with their 1932 blue saloon. The museum is run by volunteers with about 160 members and have open field days twice a year with most machinery working during the field days. In the museum were an array of various types of steam and internal combustion agricultural and industrial traction engines and various vintage tractors and farm machinery, the beautiful atmosphere was abuzz with smoke and exhaust and steam and beautiful live band and singing from the local Lions Club, a converted train carriage provided some refreshments and food as well as the BBQ by the Lions Club. There were also coach and industrial railway train rides which were a lot of fun for all and provided an education and understanding of the past.
Page 9
National Heritage Day Campbelltown Steam & Machinery Museum - May 20, 2018 Few members of our club were also spotted scouting through the second hand displays of tools and various items of interest ready to pick up some bargains. The Medieval Archery Society also meets there twice a month for their range days and the public is also invited to become a member of the museum. With such an array of displays and activities buzzing around the whole place, it proved to be a very popular place for entertainment for all ages. Amy Pui

SEVENS GO SOUTH FOR CHRISTMAS IN JULY. 22 July, 2018.
Our Austin 7 (NSW) Club celebrated “Xmas in July” with a run to a property near Bundanoon in the NSW Southern Highlands. The property is owned by an avid collector and restorer of vintage and classic cars, and other miscellaneous forms of transportation. Hours can be spent in several sheds viewing Austin Seven specials, vintage Bentleys, D series Citroens, Renault 750’s etc. The Bentley Drivers Club (NSW Region) dominated the scene at this property with their Classic Car Display, simultaneously conducting a charity B-B-Q in support of the Kids’ Research Institute at Westmead Children’s Hospital. Great value at $5/$10 including drinks. A clear sunny day prevailed although a crisp wintery Southern Highlands breeze caused many to seek shelter in sunny corners. A large grassed parking area next to the homestead was filled to capacity despite provision for over one hundred vehicles. Occasionally a silver train would flash by on the nearby southern rail line, the driver sometimes sounding the train’s horn in acknowledgement of the unexpected appearance of so many classic cars. Five Austin Sevens made the journey from Sydney. Two had arrived the previous day and stayed overnight at Mittagong (Paul and Amy Pui – 1932 RP Box Saloon, and Mark and Joanne Wellington – 1929 Tourer). Steven Dermer Bennett’s 1929 orange Ulster Sports also joined in at Bundanoon. The remaining three cars (Mervyn Boatwright – 1923 Tourer, Paul Boatwright – 1929Tourer, and Russell Linfoot – 1928 Roadster) arrived at Mittagong by carrier the following morning and all five were driven in convoy to Bundanoon. This was the first time my Roadster had been driven since around 1983. I purchased the car stored on the back of a trailer in 2012 as a non-goer. Since then it has undergone a series of gradual repairs to the point where it was able to complete this inaugural run with other “proven” Sevens. To this end I thank the Austin 7 club and its members for their assistance in getting the car to this stage and look forward to participating in future events. Russell Linfoot. #169

SEVENS GO SOUTH FOR CHRISTMAS IN JULY. 22 July, 2018.
Page 13
Rita visits Alice The South Australian roads minister obviously drives an Austin Seven. Why else would he build a road without bumps, without hills, without traffic all the way to Alice Springs, and beyond. Rita the little red roadster simply glided along the silky smooth bitumen highway on her journey to Alice Springs recently. Who would expect a road so suited to Austin Sevens in the outback. Although driving for four days without air conditioning, without radio or CD player, without reclining seats says lots for those who went before in the days when Austin Sevens were the modern car and outback roads were tracks. Rita’s trip began at Broken Hill where she exited the trailer and took the mandatory run to the old mining town of Silverton. After enjoying the sights of ‘THE HILL’ the next stop was at Woomera Rocket Range where she spent the night among the other Red Rockets on public display. Next morning the road beckoned to Coober Pedy where Australia’s weirdest miners live and work underground. There is no doubt the road away from Coober Pedy has seen the shuffling feet of departing and dejected miners whose broken spirits and shattered dreams of that big opal were hard to endure. Mullock heaps to the horizon in every direction show the hard labour expended looking for a small shiny stone that some woman can wear on her finger or some foreign tourist can enjoy as a souvenir from the great Australian outback. And some say driving an Austin Seven is folly? Ah well!! Australia is surely the only country where a hundred dusty gullies stretching to the horizon can be signposted as creeks. Rita had so many photos taken by passing motorists she might even end up with her own Facebook page. Many drivers pulled us aside to ask “was it a real car”? , Having probably never seen an Austin Seven before especially this far from civilization. On one occasion a van overtook then slowed in front. A woman appeared above the roof of the traveling van with a movie camera and began filming. It seemed like another MAD MAX desert film was in progress.
Page 14
Rita visits Alice Grey Nomads enjoyed the sight of the little car as they shot past with huge caravans only to end up camping beside us at the next caravan park. Rita might not have the speed but she handled the distance as well as any of the other big expensive vehicles. One afternoon as we sat enjoying a glass of wine beside the car we were visited by friendly Emu which demonstrated we really were in the Australian outback. For three days and 1250 Kilometres the reliable and dedicated Elaine Taylor followed as Tail end Charlene, but was never required to assist in any way as Rita sang her way along the highway like a little sewing machine. Elaine almost became Rita’s advertising agent as she answered questions everywhere we stopped (What kind of car is it? How old is it? Where are you driving to? And every other imaginable question which she patiently answered. At Alice Springs we were overtaken by a huge contingent of Motor Cycle Trikes who were on a national rally to somewhere or other. We didn’t get to talk to them as their engines were too loud and we couldn’t hear the answer anyway. With the top down we fitted right in with the entourage as they snaked along the road. We were not sure where they were going but joined in anyway just for the fun of it. Rita made many friends on the trips out to Flying Doctor base as well as Simpson’s Gap. While at ANZAC hill memorial lookout two middle aged men approached with animated enthusiasm to tell us their father drove an Austin Seven to round up cattle when they were young children. Except for one day of drizzle the weather was perfect for the trip and Alice Springs was a nice place to finish the trip and relax for a couple of days. On the way home we were nearing Nyngan when a sudden unexpected rain storm appeared. We sheltered under a huge Gum tree when the hail began to fall. Offering thanks to the heavens on behalf of the farmers whose brown parched drought stricken land was getting a good soaking we suddenly realised Rita was getting filled with hailstones (we had left the hood down) On the three day trip home a little advance thinking went into the next adventure for little Rita. Darwin seemed likely as the next Austin Seven destination. I wonder if there are any other Austin Seven Nutters who would like to join the excursion. Hmmm. Say… I wonder if the Northern Territory roads minister also drives an Austin Seven which could give some indication of the road conditions up his way. Graham Burgess

YAMBA tour Our Club received an invitation from the A7 Register of Queensland Club to join them in a Rally based in Yamba on the North Coast about 20km from Maclean. Several present and past members of the Club accepted the invitation and enjoyed an excellent Tour. It was again organised by Rhonda and Ross Guthrie who were also very much involved in the running of the National Rally in Toowoomba in 2017.Participants were George and Sue McGill, Brian and Deirdre Haywood, Dave Miller, Cliff and Daphne Stockley and Paul Stockley. Others from NSW were Peter and Dawn Abell from Port Macquarie and Geoff and Virginia Boland from Glenn Innes. We were given a very warm welcome from all Queensland members for what proved to be fun weekend. Thursday 22nd March. We set off from Sydney in heavy rain up the M1 and around Kempsey it became a deluge, but we encountered no floods and reached Coffs Harbour for lunch in sunshine. The rain had followed us up the coast, so we left Coffs just in time to be able to complete the journey in dry weather. We arrived late afternoon and joined our hosts at the Calypso Caravan Park on the edge of the harbour at Yamba where the Clarence River flows into the sea. Later we joined them for dinner at the Bowls Club. Friday 23rd March. We woke to sun and gorgeous weather! It was good to have a leisurely morning exploring the town and seeking out the coffee shops. We registered for the Rally before an afternoon drive out to Lake Wooloweyah and Angourie Point. It was here that bluestone was mined between 1890 and 1899 to line the Yamba harbour and breakwater. All that remains of the mine are the Green and Blue Pools which are now popular swimming spots. It was an easy 17km drive and on our return we found a home made ice cream shop which we enjoyed every day of our stay in Yamba! A fish and chip dinner was organised at the Rally HQ where we met many new friends from the Qld Club as well as renewing old acquaintanceships. Saturday 24th March. We woke during the night to torrential rain on the cabin roof and in the morning found that the Rally HQ Gazebo had collapsed under the weight of water! At the assembly point in the car park of the Yamba ‘Bowlo’, umbrellas were unfurled and ready to ward off some showers, but by 9.30am it had cleared for a beautiful day. About 20 cars set off for morning tea at Oliver’s Café on the Pacific Highway, but to avoid the main road we went through Maclean. After a very leisurely coffee stop we crossed the Clarence River at the Macfarlane’s Bridge just south of Maclean and headed south following the south arm of the river to the Brushgrove Hotel for lunch. It was a good run through sugar plantations with very little other traffic, so we were able to maintain 60-65kph most of the way. After lunch we made the return journey in our own time. One of the Queensland Club cars had broken down and it was good to be able to provide a new condenser and get them on the way again. At Maclean we stopped to check out the Antique Shop before returning to Yamba and the obligatory ice creams before a ‘tikky’ tour of the Aboriginal Village and the Ocean Beach. Total distance covered was about 75km.After Happy Hour at the Rally HQ, we all returned to our cabins for dinner.
Page 17
YAMBA tour Sunday 25th March. It was a beautiful morning with a cloudless sky when we assembled at the ‘Bowlo’ for the day’s run. This was a good opportunity for a ‘yak’ with other participants and locals who came to have a look at the little cars. Again, we set off for Maclean, crossing the Clarence River at the MacFarlane’s bridge. This time we followed the main river down to the ferry at Lawrence where we crossed for morning tea by the river and enjoyed a magnificent view downstream. One car would not start after the crossing and had to be pushed off the ferry by other participants! We then set off south towards Grafton on Lawrence Road until we reached Southgate and Alumy Creek, the last few kilometres along some flat but very narrow winding roads. The return journey brought us back to the Lawrence Hotel for a delicious lunch – the fisherman’s baskets were enormous as were most other dishes! The return journey was at our leisure and back in Yamba! It was a most beautiful evening, so several of us walked along to the breakwater to watch the swimmers and surfers; a kite boarder was also showing off his skills. Some even had a swim themselves. Back at the cabin we enjoyed a brief happy hour at the Rally HQ and dinner in our cabins. The run for the day was about 100kms. Monday 26th March. Following a morning walk after breakfast along the river to the breakwater, we again assembled in the ‘Bowlo’ car park before setting off for Brooms Head for the last run of the Rally. It was an enjoyable and leisurely run through the Yaraygir National Park. We lined up the little cars along the beach front for photos before going up to the headland to enjoy the view. ‘Annie’ avoided disaster when Trevor Moore spotted that the nuts on the offside rear wheel were almost undone…. It was a very lucky escape from catastrophe and a reminder to regularly check the wheel nuts!We returned via Maclean for lunch where we enjoyed a picnic by the river and a walk around the town, then on to Yamba for iced coffee as the ice cream shop was closed on a Monday! The run was about 75km. Back at the Calypso Park cars were packed on trailers for departure in the morning. Then everyone met at the Bowling Club for the Final Dinner of the Rally. It was a most enjoyable evening with good food and good company. Tuesday 27th March. Whilst most participants set off quite early on their homeward journeys, some visited Iluka on the other side of the Clarence river mouth and others decided to continue their holiday. The home journey to Sydney was uneventful. It was a memorable Rally particularly for the warm welcome which the ‘southerners’ received from the Queensland Club and the meticulous planning of Rhonda and Ross Guthrie which ensured all the runs were completed without fuss. We look forward to next year! Brian Haywood
