August 2014 New Vehicle Sales and Exports
V
ehicle Sales and Export Comments. The August sales performance of 55722 was 3.25% down on July and 1,4% down on August 2013.Year to date sales are now 4.3% down on the same period last year. Exports are up by 18.5% on the equivalent month last year but still down by 16.3% year to date. Most of the year to date decline can be ascribed to Mercedes Benz C class replacement being set up for production, the discontinuation of an export model by a major manufacturer and the industrial action. It is expected that the improvement will continue in the remaining months as the C Class production is resumed and the industrial action now resolved. · Passenger vehicles sales, which accounted for 68.11% of the total, decreased by 5% on July, while total commercials showed less than a 1% gain. · The car rental industry contributed strongly by taking up 13.1% of the sales, industry corporate fleets took up 3.6%, government 3.5% and sales through dealerships 79.8%. This mix change at this time of the year is traditional as rental companies re-fleet. · The overall daily sales rate for August was 2653, well up on July's 2504. · New vehicle sales have held up relatively well, but above inflation price increases this year favours a shift towards used vehicle sales. Vehicle Finance Comments · Virtually all new vehicles are now financed over a 72 month period with only the used vehicles impacting the average term marginally. The main driver behind this is affordability, but it has the downside of an ever-increasing average contract period which will continue to lengthen the replacement cycle.
· The percentage of applicants requesting balloon payments remained stable in August. · The last update at industry level of vehicles financed, at the end of July, shows the used car contribution at 1.8:1. The average for the first seven months of the year is 1.62:1, with an average of 1.58:1 in 2013, well below the level of 1.75:1 achieved in 2012. · A total of 183563 used vehicles have been financed in the first seven months of 2014. financed in the same period The number of new vehicles financed in the period January to July 2014 was 113344. · Comments and statistics on applications received and electronically scored by Absa in August; - We experienced a modest increase in the number of applications received and a stable approval rate. - Applications received and scored with a 72 month finance term =83% - Applications received and scored with balloon payments =21% Industry Outlook · NAAMSA's view is one of a decline of 4,6% to around 621 000 units from a total of 651 745 units sold in 2013. · Interest-rate sensitive sectors in the economy, such as the vehicle sector, will be impacted by the strain on affordability resulting from a predicted further rate increase in September. Further interest rate hikes will negatively affect the affordability of and demand for vehicle finance. · The entry-level passenger car and new model releases are likely to continue to be the main contributors to sales in 2014 · Higher new vehicle price inflation, currently at 7% for Q2 2014, will impact the affordability of new vehicles and have a positive impact on used vehicle sales. The current used vehicle price inflation is at a level
of 1%. · New vehicle export growth will be driven by global demand, which is expected to grow on the back of improved world economic growth, as well as manufacturers' export programs and an expected weaker rand exchange rate compared with 2013. Although now well behind the equivalent period last year it is expected that the second half of 2014 will be buoyed by exports of the new Mercedes-Benz C-class Consumer Outlook · Given that many consumers are still highly indebted and finding it difficult to obtain credit for higher priced vehicles, demand for favourably priced entry-level vehicles and good quality used vehicles will remain strong. · The current high fuel prices will keep consumers focused on buying more fuel efficient vehicles, with future fuel price trends remaining heavily dependent on movements in the international oil price and the $/R exchange rate. Factors Impacting Vehicle Sales · In general, vehicle sales are affected by the following factors, a number of which are now trending negative: – Vehicle price (exchange rate, taxes, input costs) – Household finance (household income, employment, inflation, ratio of household debt to disposable income and consumer credit risk profiles) – Vehicle finance (interest rates, banks' lending criteria, legislation) – Transport cost (fuel price trends, tolls) – Economic performance and vehicle demand and supply (global and domestic economic growth, exports and workforce stability) Issued by: Wessel Steffens

Call for Art 2nd Annual SANRAL Chekicoast Road Safety Art Competition T
he South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) announces its2nd annualChekicoastRoad Safety Art Competition. Promising student and learner artists are encouraged to submit art entries of their road safety creations made on A3 cardboard, paper or foam board illustrating how we can best share roads, respecting all road users whether on foot, in cars, on bicycles, or driving large trucks. This year's 'Roads are yours, roads are mine, roads are ours' theme seeks to amplify the messagethat South Africa's roads are owned by all South Africans and must be
shared. “Each of us has equal rights to use our roads and we count on each other to make the journey safer and smoother,” says Elna Fourie, Road Safety Education & Awareness Manager at SANRAL. “This must be what drives submitting artists' interpretation and illustration of road safety issues in their created works.” Categories range from foundation phase - Grade R-3 and Grade 4-6, Grade 7-9, Grade 10-12, and university students year 1-3. Winners in each category stand to win a R5000 gift voucher while the overall winner of the competition
stands to win R25 000 in cash. The competition closes on 30 September 2014, and all artwork must be sent or delivered by this date. SANRAL encourages entries from learners and student artists – whether fledgling or experienced artists. All entries need to be properly identified, providing name, grade, name of school or universityand contact information in pen on the back of the artwork. University students need to submit with their artwork proof of registration at a South African tertiary institution.
“This is an inspiring initiative and we call on all entrants to add sufficient elements that link to the theme, while making use of correct traffic signs and signals. “We were so impressed with the calibre of entrants from the inaugural competition that we look forward to this year's submissions which will no doubt represent exceptional artists while in turn assist in entrenching responsible behaviour in all road users,” says Fourie.
Important dates for participating entrants Art Competition opens 25 August 2014 Deadline for receiving entries 30 September 2014 Announcement of the Winners 13 October 2014 The prize giving will be held at a gala event scheduled for Cape Town during the month of October 2014, awarding the six categories. MEC to open a school every week Government Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lusufi, has announced that from next month his department will open a new school every week, until the end of the year. Speaking at the launch of a new high school in Soweto, the MEC said in total 17 schools will be opened in a bid to ensure that every child in the province gets education closer to where they stay. “We want every child to get a good education in a good school,” he said. He added that his department was determined to ensure that every learner in the province was able to compete at international standards. MEC Lesufi and Gauteng Premier David Makhura handed over the
newly built Freedom Park Secondary School in Devland, in Soweto, on Thursday. The new school, which will accommodate about 1000 learners from the area, will be open for learning during the fourth quarter of the year. The state-of-the-art school boasts 25 classrooms, three laboratories, a computer room and a library. It further features a sports facility building, soccer or rugby ground, canteen and courts for netball, tennis and/or basketball. MEC Lusufi appealed to the local community to take good care of the school.
Mandla Sithole, a parent who came to witness the handing over of the new school, told SAnews he was grateful for the school as it will reduce the long distances learners have to travel to neighbouring townships to get to school. “It is a big relief,” he said. Gauteng Premier David Makhura told the community members gathered at the event that the school reaffirmed government’s commitment to provide state of the art infrastructure to communities which have been previously under serviced. “We are still going to build more schools, houses and hospitals,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za
Will Not Nationalise Pension Funds Government once again reassured South Africans that it has no plans to nationalise people’s hard earned pension funds. It should also be noted that those cashing out their pension or provident funds before retirement will not only get less money than they would had they preserved, but they may be taxed on early withdrawals and no longer enjoy the tax advantages. The various retirement reform proposals seek to: Encourage individuals to provide adequately for their own retirement and the needs of their dependents and to provide for retirement funding as part of the remuneration contract. Make retirement funding arrangements cost-efficient, prudently managed, transparent and fair. For more information contact: 0800 117 669.
SANRAL celebrates women in infrastructure development The empowerment of women in infrastructure development was reinforced and celebrated at a roundtable discussion hosted by the South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) to commemorate Women's Month. The event was addressed by Deputy Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga who emphasised that women must play a more important role in the economy of the country. "Traditionally, women and engineering were not two words that went together. But that older world ethos has changed. From a base of 20 or so a decade ago, there are about 1000 women engineering undergraduates currently studying at South African universities and technikons. "However, despite the progress made in closing the gender gap and making more opportunities available for women in business, South Africa's construction industry is one place where being a woman is still a major challenge," said Chikunga. in infrastructure development "To help address the underrepresentation of women, government has invested R3.2 trillion towards infrastructure investment projects with R845 billion earmarked for the implementation of infrastructure programmes. She said she wanted to see 50% of women in managerial positions and more women engineers working with SANRAL. Nompumelelo Pakade, SAWIC (South African Women in Construction) National President said: "It is imperative that contractor development programmes (CDP) are cemented to promote skills
development. For women empowerment to be sustainable, training needs to be followed by work opportunities. CDPs create an enabling environment for contractor development, allowing for targets to be set, the growth process to be monitored and evaluation to be conducted at the end of a particular period." "SANRAL's commitment to ensuring women feature very prominently on the agenda of meeting procurement requirements is very reassuring," said Fusi Makhasane, Deputy Chairperson of the South African Network for Women in Transport.

12 Myths About Credit Reports Exposed ! @khanyisamedia
Khanyisa Newspaper
The subject of credit has always been surrounded by myths and urban legends, and for years, many people have been confused and sometimes even afraid when it came to learning about credit reports and scores. We'll help take the mystery out of understanding your credit by dispelling some popular credit myths. MYTH 1: It is a myth that your credit record can only be accessed by credit lenders. FACT: You can access your own credit record any time you like. This can be done once a year for free from each of the credit bureaus, or for a small fee at any other time during the year. MYTH 2: It is a myth that you can be blacklisted by credit bureaus if you are a bad payer. FACT: Credit bureaus cannot 'blacklist' you. All they do is record your credit behaviour, both good and bad. So this means that a one-sided report showing only negative information is impossible, and
therefore being blacklisted is also impossible. MYTH 3: It is a myth that credit bureaus are responsible for deciding whether to give you credit or not. FACT: Credit bureaus do not decide whether or not to give you credit. They just store information about how you have paid your debt in the past, and on approval, give this information to people wanting to give you credit. MYTH 4: It is a myth that you cannot challenge your credit report if you think it is wrong. FACT: If you think the information on your credit report is inaccurate, you have every right to challenge it at any time. MYTH 5 Once a credit score is bad, it can never be rebuilt. FACT A credit report is really a credit history, and credit can be rebuilt over time. It doesn't just show the way things are today; it keeps a
record of all credit opened in a consumer's name. It will indicate which items are closed or inactive, but the history remains nonetheless. Late or missed payments can stay on someone's report for up to seven years. Rebuilding credit means paying on time, looking for better credit options, and learning more about money and credit. Additionally, the longer a credit history is without negative information, such as late payments, the better. The older negative information is, the less significant it becomes. MYTH 6 Checking a credit report will hurt your score. FACT If consumers access their own credit reports, it does not have any effect on their credit scores. Reviewing a credit report results in what is called a “soft pull,” or “soft inquiry,” meaning it will only be seen on a personal credit report. When a consumer applies for credit, the lender will review the applicant's credit report, and a “hard inquiry” will be added. Hard inquiries are shown to other lenders because they may represent new debt that doesn't yet show on a credit report as an
account. Hard inquiries can affect credit scores. Everyone should check their reports at least annually. It's part of good credit management. MYTH 7 A divorce does not impact credit scores. FACT Divorce proceedings don't affect credit reports or credit scores directly. However, the financial issues that are embroiled in the divorce process often involve joint credit accounts, and those very much affect credit history and credit scores. MYTH 8 The best way to improve credit scores is to pay off all accounts and close them. FACT It's actually partly true. Paying off all debts is one of the fastest ways to improve credit scores. Closing accounts, though, can hurt credit scores. One of the most important elements in credit scores is the proportion of total balances to the total credit limits. Paying off debts lowers that proportion, improving credit scores. However, closing accounts eliminates some of the
available credit limits, making the balances appear to be higher compared to the overall limits. MYTH 9 Asking for lower limits will help your credit. FACT Having sizable credit limits is a good thing for your scores, as long as you don't use them to run up debt. Lenders like to see a big gap between your available limits and the amount of credit you're actually using. A lower limit reduces that gap, which can be bad news for your credit scores. Of course, if you can't trust yourself not to use your available credit, the damage to your credit scores may be the least of your worries. Otherwise, though, you probably should leave your credit limits alone. MYTH 10 Only credit card companies and financial lenders are interested in my credit. Find out the answer to this one and more in our next issue. Do not miss out. Your local dealer where you got this copy will assist you. Source: Credit Bureau Association

Self-healing Polymer Restores Itself In Minutes
R
esearchers at Germany's Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have developed a self-healing polymer that can mend itself and fully restore its mechanical properties in just a few minutes when heated at low temperatures. The material could be used to create self-repairing sealants, scratch-resistant paints, and more reliable fiber-reinforced plastic components. Self-healing polymers are extemely attractive materials, but creating the "ideal" polymer is far from easy, and compromises are in order. So far, scientists have mainly approached the problem from two angles: they've either used a network of embedded microcapsules containing a healing agent (which can only heal the material a limited number of times), or materials that can heal
indefinitely because they are bound together by reversible chemical reactions (but need a large amount of energy as a catalyst). The research team headed by Christopher Barner-Kowollik used a third approach. They created a "switchable network" of crosslinked fibers or small molecules that are bonded by a reversible chemical reaction. The peculiarity of this material is that the fibers can be broken down into their constituents and then reassembled again when heat is applied. There are several key advantages to the new approach: firstly, the self-healing process can be started by applying either heat, light, or a chemical substance; secondly, the healing requires only a few minutes when applying comparatively little heat (120°C/250°F); and lastly, the mechanical

properties of the material can be fully restored, and the polymer can keep breaking and healing in this way for a theoretically unlimited number of times. Barner-Kowollik and colleagues also found that their method can be applied to a number of other known plastics, and that it can be used to change the mechanical properties of the materials with a high degree of precision. Potential applications could include fiberreinforced plastic components, rapid prototyping, adhesives, composite materials, scratch-resistant paints, and self-healing sealants. The results of the research were published in the latest issue of the journal Advanced Materials. Source: KIT
