AIP ANNOUNCES THE APPOINTMENT OF DR. KATE SKINNER

T

he Association of Independent Publishers (AIP) announces the appointment of media freedom activist, Dr. Kate Skinner as its Executive Director.

Kate has worked with the unions, NGOs, government and the media industry, where her primary focus was to build a diverse, independent media sector. In 2017, she completed her PhD degree at Wits University in the Media Studies Department, focusing on public service broadcasting and South Africa's stop-start digital migration process. Kate is currently doing research on the impact of COVID-19 in the media industry.

Prior to her appointment at the AIP, Kate worked as Executive Director at the South African National Editors' Forum (SANEF).

Her appointment comes at a time when the community media sector is experiencing a variety

of sustainability challenges.

The Chairperson of the AIP Board, Ms Mbali Dhlomo, has expressed her appreciation at Kate's appointment. “On behalf of the Board, I wish to convey my sincere welcome to Dr. Skinner as she joins our team. I am certain that Kate's experience and expertise will assist us as we move the organization to the next higher level, for the benefit of our membership throughout the country.”

AIP is a membership-based organisation that represents grassroots community newspapers (both online and print). There are over 200 AIP members countrywide. he South African National Editors' Forum (SANEF), in partnership with the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), wishes to correct confusion created on social media about the vaccine registration process for the media sector.

On Friday 09 July 2021, SANEF invited the media sector from the mainstream, community, online/digital, broadcasting, print and freelance journalists to complete a form and submit their media staff details. It was stated that the below 35 years in the media will be considered in this media vaccination programme.

However, the GCIS has put in place an online form (which mirrors and captures the same information) that can also be used for registration for those in the media sector such as freelance journalists who have “not registered”.

All media organisations and freelancers were requested to complete a registration form and email it to the GCIS which has been assigned the

Comments like these are common: 1. I'm stressed by Covid and will wait until things get easier; 2. I'm young and will have a higher income later; 3. I can't get my head around financial jargon; 4. My parents never saved; 5. All my spare income goes towards debt; 6. I will get an inheritance; 7. I'm living for the moment, tomorrow can take care of itself; 8. I feel hopeless; 9. I'd rather take a chance on a high risk, high reward option; and 10. It's in my genes not to save.

Sadly, many people are struggling with issues linked to the pandemic, such as lower incomes and health issues, and these are very real challenges. It is also true, however, that many people do save despite growing up in poverty and having limited access to education and other resources. We can learn from their examples, and take advantage of online resources to inform ourselves.

JustMoney Marketing Manager Shafeeka Anthony’s replies to common justifications about not saving are: 1. There is never an easy time to start saving. Start small now to get into the habit, even if it is R50 every month.

2. You may have a higher income later, but your expenses are likely to escalate too. Start saving now to make the most of compound interest.

6. Growing up in a privileged environment is no guarantee that your parents will be in a position to support you later. Establish good money routines now and if you are fortunate enough to inherit money later, you will be better equipped to manage it responsibly.

7. Putting away money regularly will free you up to enjoy the present, with the peace of mind of knowing that you are planning for retirement.

8. If you are feeling helpless, empower yourself with knowledge. A useful tool is knowing your credit score, which lenders use to decide whether you are a low- or high-risk borrower.

9. Rather than spending money on a Lotto ticket or horse-racing tote, put those sums into a savings account and let real winnings accumulate.

10. It is true that we are genetically predisposed to certain tendencies, such as risk-taking. However, this does not govern our behaviours. Most people are capable of learning new skills and concepts throughout life.

“Changing your money mindset and habits is no easy thing, but it is well worth it,” says Anthony. “Putting away money regularly can help you pay for expensive purchases without resorting to a loan.

Electoral Commission Launches Online Voter Registration The Electoral Commission has today launched an online voter registration facility allowing new voters to register and existing voters to update or amend their registration from the ease and convenience of their homes or elsewhere.

The online voter registration facility is part of the Electoral Commission's on-going commitment to provide greater accessibility and convenience to voters. It follows the implementation of a range of other digital service channels over the past 5 years including online candidate nominations, online special vote applications and online party funding declarations.

The new online voter registration facility has been in development for a number of years.

The first phase was the introduction of an online service known as "Click, Check, Confirm" ahead of the 2019 National and Provincial Elections through which existing voters were able to check and amend their registration. More than 350 000 voters have made use of this system since its introduction.

The second phase launched today allows all eligible voters – whether registered or not – to register and update their details via a computer, smart mobile device or tablet.

The system will utilise a number of security checks to ensure the integrity of the voters' roll.

These include the use of a One-Time-Pin (OTP) verification and the submission of a scan or photograph of the voter's ID document.

The online registration complements other existing registration options including on-going voter registration at all local IEC offices and various outreach initiatives including at schools, tertiary education institutions and the general voter registration weekends ahead of elections.

The Electoral Commission believes the online facility will be a game-changer in promoting voter registration especially among young and first-time voters. Research and engagements over the years with young eligible voters to better understand their behavior have frequently identified the lack of online voter registration as a key obstacle.

The introduction of an online registration system is also a crucial part of the Electoral Commission's plans to boost voter registration despite COVID-19 ahead of the Local Government Elections scheduled for 27 October this year.

The Electoral Commission last week rescheduled its planned voter registration weekend to 31 July-1 August due to the third wave of the pandemic. All 23 151 voting stations are expected to open between 8am and 5pm over that weekend to help voters register and check their registration details in person.

The Electoral Commission hopes that providing a facility whereby voters can register, check and update their registration details

without having to visit an IEC office or a voting station will serve to minimize congestion and maximum registration.

Due to the 24/7 nature of online registration, it will also allow voters to register and update their registration details up to the last possible moment ahead of proclamation. Proclamation has the effect of sealing the voters' roll for purposes of an impending election.

Eligible voters can register in just a few easy steps: 1. Go to https://registertovote.elections.org.za 2. Click "Register to Vote Now" 3. Enter your personal details 4. Enter the One-Time Pin sent to your cellphone 5. Search for your address, or if you are at home, use the current location on your device 6. Take a photo of your ID OR submit a scan of your ID 7. You will receive an SMS within 24 hours confirming your successful registration.

Users who created profiles on "Click, Check, Confirm" platform can use the same login details to access the system.

The online voter registration application was developed using a Progressive Web Application platform which means it can be used on any device with a browser and it uses less data than most mobile apps because it doesn't need to be downloaded.

It allows the system to identify and take advantage of specific features on a device. For example, if a camera is detected, the system will suggest the user take a photo of the ID document.

All South African citizens aged 16 years and older in possession of an SA ID (smartcard ID or green barcoded ID book) are permitted to register as voters. Only registered voters aged 18 or older on election day may vote.

You must register in a voting district in a ward in which you ordinarily reside and voters are reminded that it is an offence to provide false information or to knowingly register in the ward.

In a local government elections voters may only vote in the voting district in which they are registered. There is no latitude to vote at any other voting station. This is due to the geographic element of local government election where wards are a basis of the electoral contest.

The Electoral Commission will promote the use of the online registration facility through its communication and education campaign currently underway across a range of media.

This includes TV, radio and digital adverts along with step-by-step videos accessible on the IEC website and social media channels.

Agents at the IEC Contact Centre are also able to assist voters with the online facility. The Contact Centre is open weekdays from 8am to 5pm on 0800 11 8000 in all languages.
