Police officer foiled a massive business robbery attempt By David Maretlane A brave police officer Constable Bafana of Standerton police station became the instant hero after he risked his own life when he entered a retail shop while robbery was in process.

T

he incident happened recently at Standerton CBD. It was just few minutes after the business opened the doors when three robbers armed with guns entered the store and threatened the staff to shut-up, and immediately escorted to the store. The robber allegedly ransacked the shop, removing cellphones from the shelves into the big bags. By stroke of luck, a members

of public observed that robbery is underway and alerted a police vehicle passing bye. As soon as the police van pulled off next to the shop, a Toyota Corolla which was parked few meters from the shop drove off at high speed, one police officer gave chaise while his counterpart went into the store. It is reported that when the officer entered the store he came face to face with armed robbers, sensing a danger he fire a warning shot. Robbers apparently panicked and retreated inside the store, where they climbed the roof. But luck was not on their side, the ceiling collapsed and they came down tumbling and felt in front of the police officer who

ordered them to drop their weapons and go down on their belies. When back-up of local security services guards arrived at the scene, a police officer was in control of the situation. Two unlicensed 9mm firearms were confiscated by police, a fourth suspect with a drive away car was cornered by police few blocks from the scene, and the car was allegedly stolen in Pretoria a few days earlier. All four were taken to custody to face charges of business robbery and possession of illegal weapons. They appeared in court and a case was remanded to a later date while they remained in custody and investigation is underway.

SA SSA Deductions still a problem The Association of Community Advice Offices in South Africa (ACAOSA) fully concurs with the statement that the crisis of the SASSA illegal deduction has gone viral. This is reference to GroundUp article dated 9 September 2016, “Mother of three left with R20 a month after illegal deductions from her social grant” (http://www.groundup.org.za/a rticle/mother-three-left-r20month-after-illegal-deductionsher-social-grant/)

I

n the past few years, the CAOs have experienced an escalation in the number of clients who come to the office seeking assistance with their SASSA account because of deductions that they did not know about. Amongst these cases, is one of a woman who needed advice from Nthofela Makhene who is the coordinator of Ukuthula Advice Office in Mpumalanga. According to Makhene, her case was significant because she is an unemployed, mother of two who is registered to receive R600 from the Social Grants but a debit of R100 has been deducted from her account in the last 3 months.

A loot left scattered on the floor of Legit retail store when a massive business robbery attempt was foiled by lone police officer.

23 - 29 Sep 2016 | Vol 9 | Wk 39

Makhene explains the frustration of trying to assist clients with SASSA illegal

deductions. The process includes capturing the case through a system that has been developed by SASSA, providing proof in the form of an affidavit and I.D as well as stating the amount that is being deducted monthly. Makhene adds that it is even more frustrating because the system is not efficient. As a result, Ukuthula Advice Office has conducted a survey to monitor this system. In addition to that, Sipho Nkosi and Delisiwe Skhosana from Leandra Legal Advice Office in Mpumalanga, concur with Makhene's frustration on the illegal deductions. The two case workers reiterate the story of an old lady who has been experiencing deductions of R400 from her SASSA registered card that should be providing R1500 per month to support her child and grandchildren since November 2015. According to the case workers, SASSA officials have visited their CAOs on numerous occasions to file this report and to date, nothing has been done. ACAOSA condemns these illegal deductions and we advise that immediate action is taken by the Department of Social Development (DSD). In many cases, clients that report

problems with their SASSA cards rely solely on the grant that they receive. It is distressing that efforts to stop these deductions have not been done by the relevant leadership, successfully, to date. There is only so much that the CAOs can do and the power to stop all this rests with the government. ACAOSA is a national voice organisation of the Community Advice Offices (CAO) Sector. CAOs are independent nonprofit organisations that offer free legal and human rights information, advice and services to people who are marginalized through poverty, social circumstances, and geographical location. They support clients with issues such as social grants access, civil matters, labor disputes, land entitlements, amongst other things. Thinking alone is not enough! Ingenious compromise... There is an ingenious compromise. Be accessible as a person but present your knowledge and wisdom as being rare, expensive, mysterious, and only for those who are truly ready for it.

T

his compromise allows you to build deep personal bonds with people yet have them want more or your presence... as well as be willing to pay for it. Keep in mind that one cult leader, 2000 years ago, would speak to anyone who would listen but he granted his most sacred attention to his 12 closest disciples. You can add to this compromise by having “special times” when you are not accessible to anyone. You can tell people that you are meditating, or doing your “spiritual practice” but you don't have to say anything. It's the mystery of why you are absent that you want to cultivate.

3. Imply Secret Knowledge The role of simply remaining calm and silent will recur again in this essay so I can't understate it. Here is where silence is worth a 1000 words. Saying things like “Hmmm... There are 100 possible solutions to that within your own mind.” and nothing else implies things that you know and that they should know. 4. Remaining calm as if allknowing Any sharp change in your emotional state, with the exception of joy and laughter, should be minimized. Any leader/teacher who goes on an angry rant is demonstrating their own lack of control. If you truly have control it should be demonstrated by an unshakable calm as if everything is happening just as you knew it would. I've always remembered that the scariest martial artist are the ones that don't talk or threaten...they calmly do what they have to do and walk away.

5. Create a detached involvement as if “you” are in a “higher place” In doing this people will look to you as if there is something more to you than your mere physical presence. 6. Connect deeply with the individual Here rapport is vital. When you are with people you need to put aside all of your distractions, obligations and problems to focus completely on the person or people you to whom you are speaking. 7. “Chunk Up” whenever possible This may be a bit abstract to grasp but it's important to creating an appeal because it forces people to think in bigger terms. When you do consistently if gives the impression that you are always thinking bigger than them. Adios!

S

ecunda, Mpumalanga – Today, Sasol handed over reusable dignity packs to female learners in five identified farm schools in and around the Govan Mbeki municipal area. The objective of this initiative is to support girl learners during their menstrual cycle enabling them to continue schooling without interruption. Both the Department of Health and the Department of Education have identified the lack of sanitary products as one of the major challenges facing girl face. This often results in them missing school and not partaking in sporting activities.

The dignity packs, in addition to being reusable with a life span of five years, also contribute positively to the protection of the environment as no disposal is required as is the case with the standard sanitary products. The dignity packs will be distributed to five identified farm schools, one special school and two quantile 2 schools as recommended by the Department of Health. The schools include Emdibini Combined School, Kinross Primary School, Roodebank Combined School, Trichardtfontein, Zithobe Primary School, Basizeni Special School, SS Mshayisa Primary School and Osizweni Empowering young females and restoring their dignity is what we hope to achieve and we believe that these reusable packs will

The Best Time To Sell Or Trade In Your Car September 2016: With rising living costs from inflation and interest rate hikes, to increasing fuel costs – many consumers are starting to feel the financial pinch. Trading in or selling a car may seem like a risky thing to do, but there is an optimum time to sell a car before the car starts to cost you more money than it is worth.

C

onsumers struck by the raft of increases coming from all directions might have started thinking of selling their existing car to move into something more affordable. A cheaper car will ease pressure on household finances in a number of ways. Although, car buyers should keep in mind that choosing this route also comes with its own sets of pros and cons. Those who have purchased a car within the last 18 months

might find that depreciation has made it difficult to trade in and buy a more affordable car. The optimal time to trade in one's car is when the trade value for the car is more or less in line with the settlement amount owed to the bank. Trading in a car before this breakeven point could result in the client having to pay in on their finance contract, as the vehicle has depreciated faster than they have made payments on the loan. Trading the car in later puts the client in a favorable position because the dealership will pay them more than what is owed to the bank, leaving the client with a positive cash balance. Currently the vast majority of vehicle finance applications are done over 72 months or six years. The demand for balloon payments is also on the rise – meaning a breakeven point

will be reached later in the car ownership cycle. When customers sign a vehicle finance agreement for 72 months, their breakeven point only arrives at between 48 and 52 months into the contract. However, many consumers choose to trade in their car before this point – WesBank's data shows that, on average, buyers trade in at month 38. Thus, most people trade in their cars with between 10 and 14 instalments before they reach the breakeven point. “In an ideal world, car buyers are able to wait until their loan balance is equal or higher than the amount still owed. This means no shortfall or paying off additional loans,” says Mahoney. “The best way to bring this breakeven period forward is by using a larger deposit or shorter loan period.

There is clear evidence to link tobacco to lung cancer but there is also evidence of an association of cancer of the kidney, larynx, head and neck, breast cancer, bladder, oesophagus, pancreas and stomach cancer. About a half of all life-long smokers will die prematurely and on average cigarette smokers die 10 years younger than non-

smokers. Tobacco is harmful to those who use it directly and also for the people around those smoking tobacco products. Second hand smoke, smoke from a burning cigarette and smoke exhaled by the smoker, is very dangerous to people exposed to it. Children and other people in close proximity to smokers are constantly inhaling the dangerous chemicals and are at a higher risk of becoming ill than those not exposed to the second hand smoke. Studies have shown that harmful chemicals from cigarette smoke can contaminate even curtains, carpets and bedding. These chemicals can be inhaled long after the smoker has left the room with same risk as second hand smoke. This is commonly revered to as Third hand Smoke. Hookahs, also known as Hubbly Bubblies are just as detrimental to human health. The myth that water cleans the smoke and removes the harmful chemicals is totally unfounded. The use of these devices has the same harmful

effect as the smoking of other tobacco products. The use of ingredients containing nicotine makes them as addictive as cigarette smoking. Electronic cigarettes or "Vaporizers" are the latest craze that poses serious health risks to the users. Some of these "vapours" contain chemicals that are known to cause cancers. Nicotine is extremely addictive and its use has many well known health risks. The manufacturer's intention is to get people addicted to the nicotine because that ensures a constant demand for their products. The public is warned to be aware of the dangers to their health and to make informed choices for themselves and their families. They further asked the Premier to facilitate that government lease the land for them to breed their stock. On the other hand, the commercial farmers complained to the Premier about the lack of peace and stability within the farms due to stock theft. They raised concerns about the poor road infrastructure and the lack of agricultural

They told to Premier to ensure that the emerging farmers should be given title deeds to avoid confrontations on land ownership. “People can have the farms as long as they will till the land and produce food, we will conduct a land audit on government-owned farms and we will make them available for the people,” said Premier Mabuza.

So it’s better to get drunk." And he entered the bar, drank and died. At that time, the

Society has engraved into the youth's mind at a very young age that a person has to pass matric, go to university then get a wellpaying job – in that order. This causes confusion and uncertainties for those who don't really want to do what everyone around them expects them to do. Here are a few solutions to problems young people face after matric. Not sure what to study? At age 18, nobody expects you to have it all figured out in terms of what you want to study or path to follow, So don't be ashamed or embarrassed to ask around before you start applying. Search online read about different careers and ask people around you to decide on the career that will match your personality. Don't study something because your parents insist you do or you want to copy friends' choices. If you can.t stand being in a hospital for a few hours, how are you going to be a doctor . Not meeting the requirements? The minimum requirements are not set to make it difficult for you get into university, they are set so that only the students who would cope with the difficulty of that course

can get in. If you don't meet this requirements, you are probably looking at a wrong career path and should look for a course for which you meet the minimum requirements. You will not pass maths and science and in varsity if you have been failing it throughout high school. Failed major subjects? Don't be ashamed to 'sup' or rewrite if you have failed the major subjects. Most students end up settling for courses don't like, just because they couldn't get in for the one they had applied for after they failed their majors. If you have failed matric and have exception, don't be proud to go back into class and repeat your grade 12 – think about your future before you think about what will people say. Gap Year Matric is a very tough year and if you feel much drained after all the hard work, it is advisable to take a gap year – even if you passed really well. Take the year to think about what you really want to study, you either find a job, travel the world or do some community work, then when you have decided what you want to study and where start with your application process.
