India Cries for Freedom!

India cries for Freedom:Thanks to the relentless struggles and sacrifices of our freedom fighters, on 15 August 1947, India made her tryst with destiny! After years of colonial rule, she finally became an independent nation. Ever since (during these past 77 years), India has made rapid strides in every sphere, and this fact must be applauded; however, one must also humbly admit that India still has an unimaginablelongwaytogointhe internalisation and actualisation of her freedom! Today, India and her people, cry for a freedom from everything that negates the very idea of India. They yearn for a society built on justice, liberty,

equality, fraternity, pluralism, harmony,dignity,integrityandunity ofall!

India cries for Freedom from the destruction of the country’s democratic ethos and framework! The V-Dem Institute at Sweden’s University of Gothenburg in its ‘Democracy Report 2024’ says that India is “among the ‘worst autocratisers’ in recent years. Adding that, “autocratisation processhasbeenwelldocumented, including gradual but substantial deterioration of freedom of expression, compromising independence of the media, crackdowns on social media, harassmentsofjournalistscriticalof thegovernment, aswellasattacks oncivilsociety;the“anti-pluralist” BJPgovernmenthasusedlawson sedition, defamation, and counterterrorism to silence critics. The Modi-led government also continuestosuppressthefreedom of religion rights. Intimidation of political opponents and people protestinggovernmentpolicies,as

well as silencing of dissent in academiaarenowprevalent”India has also been named in the top 10 autocratisingcountriesinthelast10 years; it is placed 104 in the Liberal DemocracyIndex(LDI).

IndiacriesforFreedom fromwant, poverty, hunger and deprivation: millions in our country, still live below the povertyline. The country still does not have any official relevant, reliable updated data regardingpoverty.Thereareatleast five different estimates of the number of poor people in India, which put the number of poor in India between 35 million and 375 million; between 2.5% of the population to 29.5%, based on different estimates between 2014 and 2022. In the 2023.The Global Hunger Index, ranked India 111 out of 125 countries with a level of hungerthatisserious.

India cries for Freedom from the throttlingoftherightoffreespeech and expression. Most print and electronic media are ‘godified’ (lapdog). India’s position in the World Press Freedom Index 2024, was 159 out of the 180 countries

ranked. The ‘Reporters without Borders’ (RSF), ranks countries according to the level of freedom available to journalists. The report declares India as one of the world’s most dangerous countries for the media. The right to dissent is fundamental to a vibrant democracy. Media personnel who take a visible and vocal stand for truth and justice are harassed, incarcerated and even killed! What is happening in Parliament (both in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha) is there for all to see. The Speakers of these Houses, make every effort to curb, to mute, to stop members of the Opposition from voicing the legitimatecriesofthepeople.

IndiacriesforFreedomforHuman rights defenders (HRDs), right to informationseekersandotherswho take a stand for truth, justice and human rights. They are at the receiving end of a vicious and vindictive system. The are intimidated, incarcerated and even killed! These include those in the Bhima Koregaon conspiracy case; JesuitFatherStanSwamyisacasein point. He worked and lived for the legitimate rights of the tribal

people. He was arrested by the NationalInvestigationAgency(NIA) on 8 October 2020 and died on 5 July2021attheageof84,whilststill incarcerated. His death is regarded as ‘institutional murder’. Highly committed activists like Teesta Setalvad, Arundhati Roy, Prof. G. N. Saibaba,UmarKhalid,MedhaPatkar and others, have false cases foisted onthemandarevictimsofvendetta. NGOs who work with the poor and powerless, are denied their FCRA licence.

India cries for Freedom from the demonization, discrimination and denigration of minorities. This is happening today with frightening regularity. Minorities (particularly Muslims Christians and Sikhs) continue to be attacked and are at the receiving end of a communally polarised society. On 26 June, the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken whilst releasing the Annual Report on international religious freedom of the US Government, noted that a wide array of violence against religious minorities were taking place in India saying, “In India, weseeaconcerningincrease in anti-conversion laws, hate

speech, demolitionsofhomesand placesofworshipformembersof minority faith communities” The USCIRF’s 2024 Annual Report recommended that India be designated as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), for "engaging in or tolerating particularlysevereviolationsofthe right to freedom of religion or belief".

India cries for Freedom from the pillagingoftheenvironment.Fragile ecosystems are being destroyed. The landslides in Wayanad, the terriblefloodinginDelhiandseveral other so-called ‘natural’ calamities all over the country, show how precious little has been done to address serious environmental concerns. Government projects favour their crony capitalist friends, providing them with a license to loot, plunder and rape the environment; the continued use of fossil fuels is a case in point. The Environmentisinashambles!Inthe 2024 Environmental Performance Index, India was ranked 176 out of 180 countries! The destruction of precious forest lands and biodiversity, to cater to so-called

‘development’ projects, contribute immensely to the climatic changes one experiences today. The 2023 Forest (Conservation) Amendment Actprovidesthatthede-reservation of reserved forests, use of forest land for non-forest purpose, assigningforestlandbywayoflease or otherwise to private entity, precious water bodies in the urban areasareland-filled,causingfloods. Mostmajorriversinthecountryare polluted; there is over-dependence on fossil fuel. Even today, coal blocks are auctioned to crony capitalistfriendsoftheGovernment. Sectionsofthecorporatesectorand particularly the mining mafia–have no qualms of conscience, in depleting precious natural resources, with the sole desire of profiteering.

India cries for Freedom from draconian laws and other antipeople legislation which have been promulgated without due deliberationsanddebate, withscant respect to the legitimate rights of the citizens. These include the Citizenship Amendment Act, the AbrogationofArticles370and35A regardingJammuandKashmir,,the

anti-farmerlaws(currentlyonhold), the four (anti-worker) labour codes, the anti- conversion laws, the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023 , the Uniform Civil Code passedbytheStateofUttarakhand, the ‘One Nation, One Election’ report; the three new criminal laws, the ‘Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita’ the ‘Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita,’ and the ‘Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam’ which have been made effectivefrom1July2024.

India cries for Freedom forquality and relevant education. Many (particularly those from the poor and deprived sections of society) still do not have the possibilities to study and the opportunities for a meaningful career and a bright future. They are straddled with a National Education Policy that does not prepare them for life; they are subject to leakages in the NEET; hundreds of students and other youth, commit suicide because of the frustrations they are subject to. The many millions of those who wanttogotostudyabroad, isacase in point. Education in India, it is evident, does not sufficiently

prepare ‘men and women for others.

India cries for Freedom from unemployment. The youth of the country continue to grapple with unemployment, with nearly 83percentofthejoblesspopulation belonging to this demographic, as per the India Employment Report 2024 jointly published by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Institute of Human Development (IHD) The report (released on 27 March 2024)underscores a concerning trend where the proportion ofeducatedyoung people, possessing at least secondary education, among the total unemployed youth has nearly doubled from 35.2 percent in 2000 to65.7percentin2022.

India cries for Freedom from corruption. Corruption is today the new normal in India and is mainstreamed; practically nothing can be done, without greasing the palms of those at the control wheels. Politicians from the oppositionpartiesareeasilybought up. The ruling regime has made

mindboggling amounts of money through demonetisation and the saleofelectoralbonds(EB).Thelast General Elections were also about the manipulation of the EVMs and the fact that in about 70 Constituencies, the ruling regime won only because of their corrupt practices. The most recent Hindenburg Research revelations show that investments by the SEBI Chairperson have been used to amass large stakes in Adani Group companies in violation of SEBI regulations. Transparency InternationalrankedIndia,93outof 180 countries in the Corruption PerceptionIndex(CPI)2024.TheBJP regime under Modi must easily be the most corrupt, amongst the worlddemocraciestoday.

India cries for Freedom for all Constitutional and independent authorities/bodies. These are patently meant to be non-partisan, objective, impartial, transparentand just! These include the Election Commission (ECI), the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the Income Tax Department, the

NationalHumanRightsCommission (NHRC), the police and even sections of the judiciary. Most of those who belong to these bodies, today seem to have lost all qualms ofconscienceandareblatantlyonesided, corrupt, compromised, corrupted, spinelessly toeing the diktatsoftheirpoliticalmasters.

India cries for Freedom for Vinesh Phogat. This woman today epitomises the resilience, the courage and the strength of all womenofIndia.Togetherwithsome ofher co-wrestlers, shetook onthe all-powerfuldonofIndia’swrestling federationforhisallegedmisdeeds. The BJP did absolutely nothing to takeastandonbehalfofthevictims; they clearly sided with the perpetrator.Vineshwassingledout; despiteherprowessshewasalmost denied a chance to compete in the Olympics. tribals of Manipur! Since May 2023, the tribals there, particularly the Kuki-Zo people, are victims of an insensitive, divisive and ruthless regime – who have sided openly withtheperpetratorsofthiscurrent spate of violence. Hundreds of tribals have been killed, many more injured, thousands have fled Manipur or live in refugee camps. Their homes and earthly possessions have been destroyed; their lands taken away from them; even their places of worship have been razed to the ground. There is no political will on the part of the State and Central Governments to ensurepeaceinManipur.

India cries for Freedom forthe

India cries for Freedom for all to live in dignity and equity, in harmony and peace, in truth and in justice, in acceptance of the other and in the celebration of pluralism; the people yearn for freedom to enhance the democratic ethos, Constitutional values and the secular fabric of the nation. For Freedom from untruth, deceit, lies and ‘feku-isms’. For Freedom from manipulated, selective and biased history. For Freedomfromhateand violence, fromrapeandkilling, from

extortion and corruption, from uniformity and monoculturalism, from authoritarianism and subjugation Freedom for all: the Adivasis , Dalits and OBCs, for the minoritiesandthemarginalised, for women and the other Genders, for the small farmers and the indigenous coastal people , for the casual labourers and the migrant workers, for the excluded and the exploited They all demand the freedom to be fearless and transparent citizens of our beloved land! As India yearns for that total freedom, we pray in the words of Tagore, fromhis‘Gitanjali’“intothat heavenoffreedommyFather, letmy countryawake!”

IndiacriesforFreedomfromevery from of fear and insecurity. Fear seems to have paralysed large sectionsofthecountry.Itiscertainly not easy to deal with a brutal, vicious and vengeful regime. Though written in the late 19th centuryandinthecontextofBritish colonialism, Rabindranath Tagore’s hard-hitting poem on ‘Freedom’ is an uncomfortable commentary of the reality and fears which grips Indiatoday

“Freedomfromfearisthefreedom Iclaimforyou, mymotherland! Freedom from the burden of the ages, bendingyourhead, breakingyour back, blindingyoureyes tothebeckoningcallofthefuture. YOUR SLIP IS SHOWING

Letmebeginwithafrankadmission.

From school days I have hated English grammar. On the other hand, my wife is a grammarian, knowing Wren and Martin’s grammar like the back of her hand. She compensates for my many inadequacies.

Theword“slip”isbothanounanda verb. The grammarian tells me that a noun is the name of a person, place or thing. A verb is some kind ofaction. Here’saclassicexampleof the word in both forms in a single sentence. “Helet slip the slip of

#chhotebhai

paperfromhisclumsyhands”.

Why am I harping on the word “slip”?Ithasmanymeanings, idioms and connotations that have a bearing on our current state of political affairs. I shall list them beforedelvingdeeper.

1. Pardon,yourslipisshowing

2. Aslip ofthetongue isno fault ofthemind

3. There’s many a slip twixt cup andlip

4. Mindyoursteplestyouslipon abananapeel

5. The prisoner managed to slip awayundercoverofdarkness

6. The boss gave his employee thedreadedpinkslip

7. Thechairmansentasliptothe loquacious speaker to conclude

8. The F1 racer followed in the slipstreamofthecarahead

9. TenmillionIndianssufferfrom aslipdisc

10. The aggressive batsman wascaughtintheslipcordon

Ten steps that sound like the Ten Commandments! Each one is pregnant with meaning and can be juxtaposed onto our current political scenario. Let’s begin with the first – Pardon your slip is showing.

This is a polite way of drawing a lady’s attention to her undergarment protruding below her dress. It is common in western attire like a frock or skirt. In India most women wear longer clothes that do not require a slip. However, if one is wearing a relatively transparent ckikankari kurti, then a chemise would be worn inside. This FrenchwordcomesfromtheArabic

Qamis, corrupted to kameez that could either be an outer shirt or an innerslip.

Butthereareseldomanynicetiesin the rough and tumble of politics. If one were to say that your slip is showingitwouldmeanthat, despite the outer garb or finery, the dirty inner linen is visible to the naked eye. I see this happening with sickening regularity in the political arena. The government makes stupendous claims about an Atmanirbhar Bharat, Amrit Kaal and AchheDin.

But there are much too many slip ups – horrendous foreign relations with our neighbours – Bangladesh, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and China. We have backed the wrong horseinbothUkraineandGaza. The postPulwamasurgicalstrikeagainst Pakistan ushered in the votes, but not peace and stability. The suddenness of demonetisation and the Covid lockdown on an unsuspecting public resulted in untold misery. The abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of Kashmir have not had the desired results. The list is endless. It would

besafetoconcludethatnotjustthe slip is showing, but possibly the emperorhasnoclothesatall! Thesecondistheslipofthetongue. Such a slip can be pardoned. But if the tongue is used for hate and intemperate speech against “others”, using words like Muslim, mangalsutra, mujhra dancers etc, thenthisisnotanaccidentalslipup, but a deliberate act that cannot be condoned.

As St James has cautioned “We all trip (slip) up in many ways. Someone who does not trip up in speech has reached perfection … Thetongueisonlyatinypartofthe body, butitsboastsaregreat.Think of how small a flame can set fire to ahugeforest.Thetongueisaflame too” (Jas 3:2,3,5). Or as Jesus said “Whatever comes from the mouth comes from the heart; and this is what makes someone unclean. For fromtheheartcomeevilintentions: murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, slander. These are the thingsthat make a person unclean” (Mat15:18-19).Soweneedtoguard against poisonous darts from the tonguesofpoliticians.

Thirdly, there’smanyasliptwixtcup and lip. There is a similar colloquial saying that there is a difference between “about to give birth and actually giving birth”. This is applicable to stillborn ideas that don’t take off, like the Agnipath scheme. The leakages from the roofs of the hastily constructed temple in Ayodhya and the new parliamentbuildingcouldfallinthis categoryofslipups.

The fourth is the warning about slippingonabananapeel.Sincewe Indiansarepronetolittering, weare literally in constant danger of slippingandfalling.Inpoliticspride andpoweraretheslipperysurfaces, when one non-biological man’s “guarantee” seeks to sway the nation of its feet. Those at the top need to be reminded that when they slip, it will be in only one direction – down.

The fifth is slipping away under the coverofdarkness.Thisissubterfuge or camouflage. The sure-fire way of covering up one’s failures is the strident religious appeal that Hindus or Hinduism is in danger. Under such a cloak of darkness, all

other shortcomings are quickly forgotten.

Thesixthisthepinkslipthatisgiven toanemployeeinforminghimofhis dismissal from service. Unfortunately, with rising unemployment andpaper leaks the pinkslipsareeverywhere.

The seventh is the warning to the loquacious speaker. They never tire of hearing their own voice or airing their “Man ki bath”. They are oblivious to the ennui of their listeners. A two-hour speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort is the latestcaseinpoint.Isitnowtimefor the people to pass the slip (ballot paper)tosay“Timeup”?

The slipstream is the eighth. It is a tactic used by Formula One racing drivers to stay in the vacuum created by the car in front, thereby increasing one’s speed. I see many camp followers and “fringe elements” following the leader to attack vulnerable groups like the Minorities or handing over the adivasis ancestral lands to big corporates.

This leads us to the ninth – the slip disc. Many of us are suffering from the slip ups of those in power. We arestoopedwiththeburdenoftheir erroneous or malicious acts. At the same time many of us should also show more backbone to those in power.

Finally, the slip cordon; used to great effect in cricket test matches. Public life is not a wham bam T20 game. It is a long haul, like a test match, that is the real test of captaincy. A tried and tested (pun intended)approachtoawellsettled or aggressive batsman is to first arrange a slip cordon on the off side, then bowl wide of the off stump, thereby inducing the batsman to snick the ball into the slipcordonandbecaughtout.

InIndia’spoliticalspectrumweneed astuteandintelligentcaptainsinthe Opposition ranks, both in parliament and the State legislatures. Only then can we ensure that there are not too many slipupsinpubliclife.

Women Power Transforming Mangalore.....

Socially conscious and concerned women here in Mangalore or Mangaluru, Spearhead social works consistently tomitigate suffering. Ms. Cecilia Shresta (nee' Mascarenhas), returning to her roots from theUS a few years ago, enlightened efforts of a largehearted women’s group to create care for deserving causes and the defense personnelstrugglingin the cold of high ranges on our Himalayan borders and the Northeast facing hostile enemies. Collaborating in many ways,

including mustering raw wool and material and other essentials and motivating the city women force andgiving much needed support mobilising help. The plans are to highlight the work and effort by many volunteers who gather at "Lucy's" and historic "Ladies Club “to knit tens of solid sets of scarves/shawls and cowls from virginwool and gather necessities for the needy. Indeed, the thought and action of this great effort here in Mangalore, 'unseen and unsung' is something to ponder on at this timewhenWomenempowermentis

celebrated. Indeed, it is a contribution to take note, appreciate and emulate in some way by one and all. 'Nari Shakthi' and'AtmaNirbhar’echoing all over Indiacomesintoplayinthisyeoman effort in this coastal region even amidstthemanyodds.Onthis78th IndependenceDay,August15,2024 it is fitting to know somethingabout good works that abound in this historic coastal city nowintoaleadershiprole.

This women’s community in this famedcoastalcityofMangalorehas dedicated itself to empowering its members to unite around muchneeded humane common causes to make a difference. The leaders of this initiative mentioned

that it all started in 2020 with knitting..... Over the years, the community has also produced with empathyanddistributedover2,500 toys to patients at the Wenlock District Hospital here, children with cancer at KMC and students of schools in the poor hinterlands of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi and this effort is ongoing. It was detailed how this women'saction group, has sent handy items and preloved items to NGOs in North Karnataka and Odisha, including 500 skullcaps to Buddhist monks in Laos. Currently, the women are engaged in making crochet and quilted blankets, counterpanes, baby blankets, quilts and muchmore.

The Needlework and Craft group has inspired the formation of several subgroups based on members’ interests,” said Sabrina leading from the front. She explained: “Another active group is the Nature, Nurture, and Natural group, which includes both men and women. They engage in activities focused on environmental conservation and learning. Alookat"LUCY's” : Anenterprise that has turned out to be an unofficial base for women, according to the quiet dynamic Cecilia Shresta, it all started in a small simple way in 2018, her ideas soon after she returned from the USA for good. The Shrestas lived in differentplaces in the US, first in Philadelphia, Arkansas and Texas. In Mangalore now settleddown among her ancestral rootsinthispartofthecity; located opposite the gate of the historical Rosario Cathedral on the ancient roadtoHoigeBazar. Passersbynot often notice it - the sign board simplysays "LUCY's - Knitting,

But thepotentialcreatedoutofitwhere a service to the most heroic people ofthenationiscreatedisadmirable. The factthat gradually many institutions and individuals came in toseeandunderstandthe"knitand pearl" concept 's popularity and usefulness has taken an upward trajectory and promises to be a gradual launching pad for many goodideasandactions.

Ms. Sabrina Hougard of 'Soulo Conversations’ explained that knitting and needlework may appeartobedeclininginpopularity among the savvy IT NewGen, yet it certainly is alive and even like old times, men play a role too. This type of concentration on knitting regularlyhasaveryconstructiveand positive impact on the brain, coordinatingthe handsandfingers, andpatternedeyemovementsgoa long way in mental wellbeing and can prevent and controldementia and Alzheimer's and so on. Elders kept alert by this activity can improve their cognitive skills and remain in better mental health and theirphysicalfaculties.Ontheother side of the coin, this is a very

constructive and helpful Occupational Therapy in several cases and challenges and the potentialisvast.

The historic name "LUCY's”: The chiefprotagonistthatlendsherdear name primarily is Cecilia’s dear mother “Lucy Mascarenhas" (nee' Pais daughter of Martin Pais 18521921 of premier wine merchants hailing from Urwa). Lucy brought up a large family in Bangalore in times that were difficult inthe 40s and50s. Itseemshermainstayand deep interest was in Needle work, CrochetandKnittingtoaverylarge extent. Lucynevershiedawayfrom passing on her ideas and skills not only to her children, but to many youngsters she took under her

wing. She is a well-known personality in the Konkani Catholic Community in Bangalore and Mangalore. This LUCY"s popularity willneedpagestorecordhere. And her daughter Cecilia is now spreading her mother's skills for posterity here, indeed a mission unique.

The second to associate with the name "Lucy's" is Cecilia’shusbandDr. Harold (Harry) Shresta PhD, ( an ex-IITian who was teaching for a long time at Arkansas Uni).

Dr.Harold's paternal grandmother - Lucy Shresta (1892-1960), the founder of Ladies Club now existing on the western slopes of Lighthouse Hill, a well-known landmark, a renowned institution with unmatchedservice to Mangalore the region and its people and women in particular. A polished socialite who travelled far andwidewithherhusbandMaurice Shresta (1872-1952), whose father changed his surname from Pinto to Shresta, while in then Ceylon. Elected vice chairman of the town municipality (1929) and later Member of the Legislative Council, Madras Presidency (1932). MsLucyspentsometimein London, England and was often referred to as "London Lucy". TheyalsohadafarminManjeshwar and that was her great interest too, she was devoted to the cattle and farmtilltheend.

Indeed, it is noteworthythat modern Mangalore is contributing in several spheres to the national effort and women here are positively to the fore in multiple spheres. Mangalore is presently a premier hub for professionaleducation and students and teachers from all corners of the land are based on enhancing credibility and quality. This expose is one example but therearemanymoretobesure.Let us be happy for this and seek ways and means to help people and our great country in these times whenintegrity and honesty are in thebackseat-moveonahead

Own Wisdom

Avoid dwelling in the shadows of others' views, Their judgments are not the path you choose. Forge your own way, let wisdom guide, In the light of truth, let your spirit reside.

Let courage be the fire that lights your path, Unburdened by fear, unshaken by wrath. The world may whisper, but you must stand, With choices made by your own hand.

In the light of your wisdom, boldly shine, For your journey, your destiny, is truly divine.
