Edwin JF Dsouza, Sahitya Academy Award-winning Konkani writer, brilliant orator, a larger-than-life personality, a man who never minced words – sounds familiar? But of course, that is the Edwin everyoneknew.
But, to us in the family, there was a side to my father that no one really knew of. Growing up in Kuwait, I remember dada always being hands-on in bringing me up. He would weave a million stories at bedtimeandwouldkeeptheheater right in front of the bathroom door so that I wouldn’t feel cold coming out in the winter months. Every Thursday-Friday (which were the weekly holidays in the Gulf) he would cook all the meals – his beef stir-fry with capsicum was the absolute best. I was a notoriously bad eater, but he had an ingenious wayoffeedingme.Hewouldsitme down, put a handful in my mouth and smoothen the bite upwards sayinghewasfillingacementmixer. Not many people know, but for all of dada’s intimidating demeanour, he was mortally scared of heights and thunder. During any flight, he would only sit in the aisle and grab the armrests till his knuckles went white. A cousin, who was also flying with us once, took him to the front of the plane, where the captain’s door was open and showed him howtheplanewasonautopilotand the captain was enjoying a book and a burger. This was back in the day when security was still a bit lax. I don’t think dada everforgave that cousinforthat sight.
One stroke of thunder and dada would sit in his favourite chair with both his fingers in his ears. I would draw the curtains and stick my face to the windows to watch it all, with himinthebackgroundtellingmeto stayawayfromthewindow.Hisfear of thunder was so legendary that membersofthefamilywouldcall,or evencomehometoseehimwhenit wasthundering.

He bought wood, cut and polished it and installed bookshelves for mom and me for our huge collection. He once made a large 6-foot thermacol cut-out of a wine glass and built shelves on it. On this, he displayed miniature bottles from all our travels. It was suchauniqueset-up.

On Saturday, October 26, 2024, while the All-India Konkani Sahitya Parishad held its 33rd session at the Ravindra Bhavan, Madgaon a big group of agitators – both from Goa and Karnataka, got together at the venueandlaterattheLohiaMaidan to demonstrate its protest peacefully. They denounced the policy of the Sahitya Akademi and called it discriminatory. The protestors sought a response from Fr.Mouzinho Athaide, thepresident of the session if he is willing to talk
to his superiors in the Goa Catholic Church to prescribe the liturgical and religious books to be held in Nagari Konkani script. (At the present both the religious and liturgicalliteratureisreleasedbythe Church in Roman script.) They also wondered how the one-way - One Language, One Script’ policy’ of the Akademi could be imposed on Konkani people in different states where they use different scripts for thesamelanguage.
The peaceful protest was organized by the Global Konkani Forum, Goa inassociationwithManddSobhann a literary and cultural forum in Mangalore and the Konkani WritersForuminMangalore.
TheSahityaAkademihassince1987 recognized only one script, Nagari outofthefivescriptsbeingusedby the Konkani people in different states of India. But the protestors argue that the Roman script and Kannada comprised of the maximum literature published in Goa and Mangalore. While in Goa the language is spoken by 33% of the people in the neighboring Karnataka State, 80% of the literature is in Kannada script. In addition, Konkani is also written in Malayalam in Kerala State and in Perso-Arabic script by the Muslim community from Bhatkal till Ratnagiri in Maharashtra State. The protestors pointed out that the Konkani language has 52 dialects and only Nagari script does not representtheethnicityandvibrancy ofthelanguageacrossIndia.
Why Nagari - the signs of opposition
It is worth mentioning here that in the year 1987, Konkani language was recognised as the official language of the State of Goa as per State Language Act and subsequently an advisory committee was appointed by the Central Sahitya Akademi which recommended that Nagari be the right script for the language. According to the protestors, this was pre-planned as majority of the membersintheadvisorycommittee belonged to the Nagari lobby in Goa.
Ahead of the above protest in Goa, asymposiumwasheldjointlybythe Global Konkani Forum (GKF) and Mandd Sobhann at Kalangann in Mangalore during which the 'arbitrary decision' of the Sahitya Akademi and Konkani Advisory Board was criticised in equivocal
language. Even the members of the local Konkani Writers Forum had participatedinlargenumbers. A resolution was then passed that opposed the one-way-traffic stand of recognizing and promoting only one script for Konkani language. It further said – “In support of our resolution passed today, we will take all actions, including legal if needed to impress upon the government to include all the scripts of Konkani language for the recognition.
Atwelve-memberactioncommittee wasformed whichhadsixmembers each from Mangalore and Goa. While Kennedy Afonso was unanimously elected as the chairman of the committee, it had Eric Ozario, the head of Mandd Sobhan in Mangalore and a wellknown music composer himself. Besides,StanyAlvares, thepresident of Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy,LouiePinto, thepresident ofManddSobhannwerepartofthe committee. The meeting was attended by Konkani activists, litterateurs, journalists, and cultural heads derived from different sections of the society while 16 membersfrom GKF,Goaattended.
KKSA president Stany Alvares speakingonthe occasion, disclosed that the Karnataka government has decided to support each academy to use Kannada script as its administrative medium and the ChiefMinisterhimselfhaspromised to pressurize the (Central) Sahitya Akademi to give equal status to all thescriptsincludingKannada.
Eric Ozario, the ‘Tireless Crusader’ thundered - “We all know that Konkani is being written in five scripts, as it doesn’t have its own script. In such a scenario the action of the Sahitya Akademi hinders any further development of the language which has many other challenges of its own. He said that no other script will be allowed to use within Karnataka for the Konkani programs if Kannada script isignored.”
The protest in Goa was very brief but was well planned. It comprised of many of the ‘tiatrists’ who came from the theatre who used Romi as their medium of expression. Attired in black costumes, with many wearing black masks, and armed
withplacards, theycameonebyone on to the stage and expressed their anguish and disappointment. They included Wilson and Sharon Mazarello couple, Roseferns, Prince Jacob, Pascoal de Chicalim, Michael Gracias, Menino de Bandar, Joe Rose, besides activists and select peoplefrom the community.
The president of Global Konkani Forum, Kennedy Afonso thundered that the dharna is organised to lodgeaprotesttheSahityaboomed that,“Throughchicaneryanddeceit, the Sahitya Academy has made Konkanitheofficiallanguageofone script. This issomethingagainst the Indian Constitution promising equality,” he said. Others including the delegates from Mangalore also spoke ontheoccasion.
Konkani’s strength – its spread anddiversity
Itmay benotedthatV.P.Chavan, a learnedlinguistfromGoastatesthat the etymology of Konkan is vibrant and hence Konkani is derived from
the Kannada wordkonkumeaning 'uneven ground'. The Kannada origin suggests that Konkana might have included Kannada territory, and 'unevenground ' suggests the hillynatureoftheterritory,Konkuin Kannada also means that which is 'notstraight'andis'crooked' . Although Konkani as a language belongs to the Indo-Aryan group, it is influenced by a language of the Dravidian family. A branch of the KadambaKingswhoruledGoafora long period, had their roots inKarnataka State. As Konkani languagewasneverusedforofficial purposes the old documents show considerable Kannada influence on grammaraswell asvocabulary. Like southern Dravidian languages, Konkani is more evident in Konkani syntax. Also, he said the Konkani spoken in Dravidian regions has borrowed numerous phrasal verb patterns.
Other Konkani communities came intobeingwiththeirowndialectsof Konkani, for example the Konkani Muslim community of Ratnagiri andCoastal Karnataka due to a mixture of intermarriages of Arab seafarers,Middle Eastbusinessmen, Britishers and locals as well as conversions of Hindus to Islam. Another migrant community that picked up Konkani are the Siddis, who are descended from Bantu peoplesfrom South East Africa that were brought to the Indian subcontinentasslaves.Likewise, the Konkani people who migrated to Kerala used the local language, Malayalam towriteKonkani.
Why they did not oppose then, questionsDrUdayBhembre
DrUdayBhembre, aprominentpoet from Goa who was one of the membersintheadvisorycommittee looksattheissueofRomanscriptin a different angle and seems to agree that Romi is a prospective opponent.
He says the Official Language Act was enacted in 1987 and none of them protested about the noninclusion of the Roman script and
for many years thereafter. It is only inrecentyearsthatdifferentgroups have come up raising the issue and making demands. In an exclusive article in The Navhind Times, Bhembre questioned why Roman script protagonists did not protest at the righttime.Inotherwords, heseems to say, ‘Had there been a protest, Roman script deserved a place in Goa governments language policy’ but he did not mention how the majority Nagari group fooled and hijacked the idea of ‘Konkani language’ 37 years ago. IntheStateofGoa,asweknow, the literature in Romi is higher than in Nagari, which is evident from the fact that more than 33 village panchayats have already resolved and requested for equal status to their script in the Official Language Act. Also, theyfeeltheRomanscript is the natural script which help to transit to English and other western languagesiftheyouthaspireforthe advancementoftheireducationand other skills for future development. They also argue that the Article 29 and 30 of the Indian Constitution grants them the rights of linguistic minorities and safeguards them
fromimpositionofonescriptasthe Statelanguage.
Fiction – Dr Pratap Naik
Dr Pratap Naik, S.J. is a top litterateur and linguist himself now settledinGoa. Heaskshowfeasible it is to impose one script for Konkani? According to him this is near impossible unless the Nagari protagonists look forward to a dispute to all along. Though Konkani is the state language, only 30.93% of total Konkani population is found in Goa! The Konkani language is spread across Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Kerala, Gujarat,MiddleEastandindifferent countries of the world. They use different dialects and scripts, he says.
DrNaikadds–Itisbestweareopen tothegroundrealityandnotbeled by mere theoretical idealism of language or script chauvinism. In democracy, there will not be peace and unity if injustice prevails, and one group dominates others. Mutual respect, understanding, and ‘unity in multiplicity or diversity’ must guide any action. Let these
three main groups, namely, those who use the scripts, Roman, Kannada and Nagari live with dignity.
Let the Konkani people decide which script to use, says Dr Pratap Naik. “The culture of the heart is greaterthanthecultureofthemind. Konkani is primarily a language of theheart,”heconcludes.
Says Edmond Noronha, one of the protestors who represented Konkani Lekhak Sangh (Konkani Writers Forum) in Mangalore – Let us not ignore the fact that 80% of the literature in Konkani is in Kannada script and maximum number of copies of Konkani books are sold in this script even today. Today, we are only five writers from KLSwhohaveblownthetrumpetof opposition, but soon there will be 25lakhKonkanipeopleinKarnataka supporting this cause. It is a known fact that for the sake of power and money only handful of people have sided with Nagari script while they themselves write in Kannada script, he said. Further Mr Noronha adds, “We are not here to build walls
between the vibrancy of Konkani. We are not against Nagari script, but we respect all five scripts and will never succumb to the imposition of one script for Konkani.”
Lloyd Rego, a poet of repute describes the situation quite emotionally, like his songs. He was one of the protestors in Goa a few days ago. He says when a mother has five children - all different in habits, age, colour and other ways,
how can she discriminate between them? For her all the children are the same unless the illegitimate father who has only child, ensues that the other four children are betterleftdownonthesteps.
“How illogical and senseless this treatment could be. We Konkani’s areinsuchapatheticsituation,”-he said while concluding his point of view.

Mangalore is well known in India and Internationally for its effective work and has evolved as a true support for prison services and prisoners in need - the least, lost and last. Despite the many hurdles encountered in recent times; Apart from providing occasional entertainment, refreshments and utilities in local prisons, concern ensures that the huge number of inmates in jails are expeditiously handled. Efforts are on to provide enhancedinterfacewithfastercourt procedures, lawyers, legal help units, prison officers and all down the line to cooperate. Hopefully, the new law regulations introduced will aid in better disposal of cases, especiallytheroutineones.

The Invasion of Bengal in 1203 by Bakhtiyar Khilji show how illprepared Indian Kings were. Muslims already had captured Delhi, and the king of Bengal Laxman Sena remained sleeping.
Bakhtiyar Khilji a very brave and intelligent Muslim leader attacked Bengal with a small army. He attacked very fast and when he entered Nabadwip town, only 18 horsemen could remain with him. However, King Laxman Sena ran away instead of resisting to save himself. Bakhtiyar looted and established his kingdom of Bengal in a short time. Bakhtiar burnt Nalanda and slaughtered Buddhist Monks who could not escape to Tibet. After building up his army he invaded Tibet in 1206 with a large army of 10000. Tibetans were well prepared. Tibetans allowed Bakhtiar toenterthevalley. Bakhtiyarlooted some villages. However, Tibetan
