NAGRI INSULTS

ROMI KONKANI!

ByRajan Narayan November 1, 2024, NAGRIINSULTS ROMI KONKANI!

THE All-India Devanagiri Konkani Parishad insulted Romi Konkani again at the conclave held at the Ravindra Bhavan in Margao, recently. Very cleverly the Nagri

fanatics used their token Catholic supporter Mausinho Ataide to launch the attack on Romi Konkani. Ataide, whoistheonlyCatholicwho supported Nagri Konkani, was in fact elected as the president of the All-Goa Devanagari Konkani Parishad.

Mausinho Ataide ruled out any changes in the officiallanguage act

to give Romi Konkani equal status. On the contrary, Ataide dubbed Romi Konkanialong withKonkani in theKannadaandMalayalamscripts.

Ataide showed his attitude toward Romi Konkani by suggesting a translationcelltotranslatetoenable people using Konkani in the Romi script to switch to Nagri. Ataide even proposed treasures which provide equivalent to Devanagiri equivalence for words in Romi script.

Nevermind that farmore people in Goa and in all parts of the world write in Romi Konkani and not in Devanagari Konkani. Nagri Konkani is written only by a very small section ofthe Hindus inGoa.This is because the majority of Hindu GoansstillusedMarathitoreadand write. It is only a few Saraswat writers who used their power to strike adealwith theMarathi lobby tomarginalize Romi Konkani. In retrospect, I believe that as the editor of OHeraldo at that time I should have rejected the Official

Language Act which granted only Konkani inthe Devanagiri script the status of the official language of Goa.TheOfficialLanguageAct1987 wasaconspiracy between ahandful of influential Devanagiri Konkani fanatics and the Marathi lobby which was very powerful at that time.

Ramakant Khalap, the MGP leader, has admitted that he succeeded in his objective of securing equal official language status for Marathi. It may be recalled that the 1987 official language bill stipulated that Marathi would enjoy equal official language status with Konkani. This was clear from the wording of the officiallanguage bill which declared that Marathi shall be used for any andevery officialpurpose.

GOVERNMENTBETRAYAL

THE Nagri Konkani gang is aware that the official language bill was never implemented in the right spirit by successive governments in Goa. Every time Konkani was

notified for use for any official purpose, simultaneously Marathi was also allowed to be used for the samepurpose. WhenNagri Konkani wasusedforsending outinvitations for official functions, the Marathi lobby insistedonMarathialsobeing used. Goaisprobably theonlystatewhere invitations for official functions are issuedinEnglish,MarathiandNagri Konkani. Even now the invitations for the functions held at the Raj Bhavan on Independence and Liberation Daysare issued primarily in English along with Nagri and Marathi versions. The worst form of discrimination against the Catholic population ofGoaistheprovision is the knowledge of Konkani only in the Nagri script is compulsory for government jobs in Goa. This automatically shuts the door for government jobstothosewhowrite inRomi Konkani. It has been well established that Konkani has been written in the Romi Kannada and Malayalam

scripts for more than at least 300 years. The first books in Konkani were by Fr Thomas Stephens who even brought out a Bible in Romi Konkani in the 16th century. There were half a dozen newspapers and magazines in Romi Konkani including“Ugwad” and“Vangarache Ishixt,” a publication which is still brought out bythe PilarSociety. Romi Konkani has always been the medium for the tiatr which is the most popular tiatr form in Goa. It was Konkani tiatr which kept Konkani mai the language alive in the face of attempts by the Portuguese regime to suppress it. Unlike the tiatr, the Marathi natak does not havemanyfansinGoa. In any case, the Nagri Konkani fanaticsdonotsupport natak. There are no natak in the Nagri Konkani script. The Nagri Konkani fanatics havemiserably failedin coming out ofGanesh artiin Nagri Konkani, the prayers offeredduring Chaturthiare still inMarathi.

MAJORSETBACK

WRITERS in Romi Konkani received major setbacks when only Devanagiri Konkani was recognized by the Sahitya Academy for its literary awards. Books in Romi Konkani or in Kannada Konkani or Malayalam Konkani had to be

translated into Nagri or English to be considered for the Sahitya Kala Academy awards.

The result has been that no Romi Konkani author has received a Sahitya Kala Academy award for books.

Last week, while meeting Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Jay Bhattacharya “impressed Kennedy withhisideas to overhaul NIH,” according to The WashingtonPost.“Bhattacharyahas

Earlier this month, U.S. President elect Donald Trump choose Kennedy as the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the NationalInstitutesofHealth(NIH).

This week, Trump nominated Bhattacharyaasthenextheadofthe NIH. “Together, Jay and RFK Jr. will restore the NIH to a Gold Standard of Medical Research as theyexaminetheunderlying causes of, and solutions to, America’s biggest healthchallenges, including our Crisis of Chronic Illness and Disease,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

If confirmed by the Senate, early nextyear Bhattacharyawill headan agency, with a roughly $50 billion budget. The NIH oversees clinical trials and other efforts to develop

vaccines and other drugs, to tackle publichealthissues;italsoprovides medicalresearchgrants.

Bhattacharya. 56 years old, is a professor at the departments of medicine and economics at Stanford University.

In March 2020, Bhattacharya coauthored an opinion piece inThe Wall Street Journalstating that forecasts that COVID-19 would kill two million Americanswere “deeply flawed”, adding that “a 20,000- or 40,000-death epidemic isafarless severe problem…” The pandemic killed more than 1.2 million Americans.

Later that year, Bhattacharya was oneofthreeleadauthorsofapublic note seeking relaxation of the pandemic restrictions. Known as The Great Barrington Declaration, the signatories called for “Focused Protection…those who are at minimal risk of death to live their lives normally to build up immunity to the virus through natural infection, while better protecting thosewhoareathighest risk.” How exactly to carry out such a separation of those with minimal

risk andthose withhighest risk was notexplained.

Last month, Bhattacharya hosted a forumatStanfordwhichacolleague Pantea Javidan described as “a platformfordiscredited figureswho continually promote dangerous, scientifically unsupported or thoroughly debunked approaches toCovid,” according tothe SanJose Mercury News.Javidan is on the faculty at Stanford’s department of psychiatry andbehavioral sciences.

Since 2001, Jayanta (Jay) Bhattacharya has been teaching medicine and economics at Stanford. Earlier, he was also teaching at the department of health research and policy, 2001 to 2020.

From 1998 to 2001, he was an economistattheRANDcorporation and avisiting assistant professor in

economics at the University of California,LosAngeles.

Bhattacharya, whodoesnotpractice medicine, earned anM.D.,from the School of Medicine, 1997, Ph.D. in Economics, 2000, and A.M., A.B., 1990, all from Stanford University. Hewas borninKolkata,India.

Kennedy willbeBhattacharya’sboss if both their nominations are confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Kennedysaysheintendstoimprove nutrition, including of food served tochildren inschools, byrestricting ultra-processing, including use of unhealthy, excessivesalt, sugar and other additives, as well as curbing the promotion of junk foods. But Kennedy may not achieve much since he “is taking a direct shot at Big Food, one ofthe country’s most powerful industries whose traditional allies are Republicans,” according totheNewYorkTimes .

However, Kennedy’s views on vaccines are raising major concern, including about Bhattacharya’s potential role at NIH. “While Kennedy has deniedon several occasions that he is antivaccination…he has repeatedly

stated widely debunked claims about vaccine harm,” according to theBBC . One of his main false claims - repeated in a 2023 interview with Fox News, was that“autism comes from vaccines.”

DavidElliman, aconsultantatGreat Ormond Street Hospital in London, toldBBC,"Vaccination hasprobably saved more lives and is better researched than most, if not all, aspects of healthcare. RFK Jr could setthisbackandberesponsible for the deathanddisability ofmyriads ofpeople, particularly children.”

From 2017-2019, during Trump’s first term as President, Scott Gottlieb served as the head of the Food &Drug Administration, which is under the Department of Health. This week, Gottlieb toldCNBCthat Trump acknowledges the importance of vaccinations. But Gottlieb fears a sharp resurgence of measles and other infectious diseasesintheU.S.inafewyears,if most of the senior health care officials, nominated by Trump, take office He toldCNBC , “We face a grim and avoidable resurgence of once vanquished childhood infectious diseases.”

Message to My Children

If I should die my darling child

Weep only for a while, if you must

Remember the moments we were blessed to share

Where homeless children despair.

Cherish the stupid moments

The joys and the pains.

Remember the holidays and dancing in the rain.

Remember the games we played and when you drove me insane

If I should die my darling child

Wherever that may be

Leave not your jobs your family or place

To be, where I no longer will be

Remember me with what makes your heart light

Remember me for I never far from your heart

Death can never keep us apart

I will love you from this life unto the next
