“The path that led me here in recent weeks was no doubt unexpected,” she said. “But I’m no stranger to unlikely journeys,” she added.
She recalled moving often as a child, and eventually settling around San Francisco, where she was raised by a community of caretakers. Harris shared with the audience the lessons learned from her mother. Harris attacked GOP candidate Donald Trump, calling him “an unserious man” and urged Americans to consider the “extremely serious” consequences of putting him back in the White House.
“Consider the power he will have, especially after the United States Supreme Court just ruled that he would be immune from criminal prosecution,” she said. Just imagine Donald Trump with no guardrails and how he would use the immense powers of the presidency of the United States, not to improve your life, not to strengthen our national security, but to serve the only client he has ever had — himself,” Harris said.
“On behalf of everyone whose story could only be written in the greatest nation on Earth, I accept your nomination to be the President of the United States of America, ” Harris said at the DNC convention. She described the upcoming election as the “most important in the life of our nation.”
Harris also promised to bring back the bipartisan border security bill and sign it into law which Trump had openly stymied by calling Republican lawmakers and telling them it would affect his chances at the ballot box if immigration was seen as being dealt with.
The anger amongst Democrats was palpable at the convention as Trump keeps attacking immigration as their failed issue. Harris also criticized Donald Trump on the issue of reproductive rights and said she will sign into law the bill if elected to president.
“We trust women, and when Congress passes a bill to restore reproductive freedom. As president of the United States, I will proudly sign it into law,” she said.

Biden Hands Legacy To Kamala, Tells America: I Gave My Best To You
(Continued From Page 01) It was a farewell speech to the party he has served for half a century – with five months left in office. Wiping away tears after being introduced by his daughter Ashley, Biden waved to the crowd. “Are you ready to vote for freedom? Are you ready to vote for democracy and for America? Let me ask you, are you ready to elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz?” Biden said.
Taking multiple swipes at Trump, Biden promised to be the “best volunteer” Harris and Minnesota Governor TimWalz, her vice-presidential running mate, had ever seen. “I love the job, but I love my country more,” Biden said, drawing chants of “We love Joe.”
Harris is riding a historic whirlwind into the convention: her campaign has broken fundraising records, packed arenas with supporters, and turned opinion polls in some battleground states in Democrats’ favor. She joined Biden onstage for a hug after he finished his address. In his speech, Biden touted his administration’s accomplishments – boosting the U.S. economy and strengthening U.S. alliances abroad. Biden rapped Trump for calling the United States a failing nation. “He’s the loser,” Biden said with fervor. Earlier in the evening, Harris, 59, made a surprise appearance, and the campaign said, she had insisted on being there for Biden.

Know Your Risk For Blood Clots Before Taking Birth Control
In today’s evolving reproductive health landscape, informed decision making about contraception is crucial, particularly for women affected by inherited blood clotting conditions or thrombophilia. Selecting the right birth control method is pivotal, say experts, who point to research that shows the risk for potentially life-threatening blood clots is 35 times greater among women with genetic clotting disorders who use estrogenbased contraceptives.
Dynamic Debate
Recent advances in technology and healthcare policies have fueled debate around screening for thrombophilia, a condition characterized by an increased tendency to develop blood clots, before starting estrogen-based contraceptives. Current guidelines discourage universal thrombophilia testing, citing concerns such as costs and potential adverse psychological effects. Instead, selective screening, focused on individuals with personal or family histories of blood clots, is more likely to be embraced by
the medical community. Also, concerns about unfair treatment by insurers or employers due to genetic disclosures underscore the complexities of this approach.
However, people in support of a more patient-centered approach to healthcare and this type of birth control decision making stress the importance of identifying individuals at higher risk for blood clots.
Patient-Centered Approach
Each year, many hundreds of women in the United States alone lose their life due to blood clots linked
to estrogen-based contraception, as studies demonstrate. Advocates for genetic testing emphasize its role in facilitating personal -
ized healthcare decisions, potentially reducing the incidence of clot-related fatalities, and empowering women with information and a more patient-centric approach to reproductive healthcare.
Cost considerations remain a significant factor, but for many, the value of preserving health and saving lives far outweighs financial concerns. While insurance coverage for genetic testing varies, studies show a willingness among women to bear screening costs, underscoring the importance of in-
formed decision-making. Despite the perceived low absolute risk for blood clots among individuals with genetic clotting disorders, personal factors must be considered. Tailored approaches to contraceptive decisions, guided by individual risk profiles, may be warranted, especially in certain populations with higher rates of genetic clotting disorders.
For individuals with genetic thrombophilia, contraceptive options such as copper IUDs or progestinonly pills offer effective alternatives without increasing clotting risks. Prioritizing safety and effectiveness is paramount in contraceptive decision making.
While genetic testing may cause some level of anxiety or concern, studies indicate that most individuals do not regret pursuing testing. Knowledge empowers individuals to make proactive decisions about their health, outweighing potential psychological burdens.
Discrimination Concerns
Despite legal protections, concerns about discrimination persist. Understanding the implications of genetic disclosures on insurance and employment can inform decisionmaking processes, though these concerns may rightfully deter some individuals from pursuing testing.
Women interested in pursuing genetic testing should talk with their healthcare provider about their testing options. Genetic counselors can also provide valuable help. Women considering their contraception options and interested in learning more about genetic testing can get more information from the Rowan Foundation at www. alexrowanfoundation.org.
Empowering Women
Genetic testing holds the promise of empowering women to engage in informed discussions with healthcare providers, fostering shared decision making in reproductive healthcare. Informed choices, guided by genetic information, may pave the way for more personalized and patient-centered care. (StatePoint)
What To Know After A Bladder Cancer Diagnosis
A bladder cancer diagnosis can be scary, but according to those who’ve been through it, advocating for yourself and taking charge of your journey can help you make informed decisions when it comes to your treatment to get the best care possible.
“For me, a second opinion turned an originally doom-and-gloom picture into a more hopeful, optimistic and clear path forward,” said Mary Beth M., a bladder cancer survivor. “It’s so important to seek a second or even a third opinion if you feel uncertain during your journey with bladder cancer.”
In today’s healthcare landscape, where costs are rising and policies are restrictive, effective advocacy from survivors, healthcare providers and supporters is crucial. Collaborating and advocating responsibly can strengthen the healthcare system and improve the quality of
cancer care that patients receive.
“Being your own advocate isn’t just about speaking up, it’s about taking charge of your own wellbeing and ensuring that you get the care you deserve,” said Mary Beth. Here are a few ways you can take charge of your journey:
• Stay informed. Learn everything you can about bladder cancer, your treatment options, your health in-
surance coverage, and other aspects of your care. This will help you navigate decision making from an informed standpoint.
• Prioritize self-care. Taking care of your body and mind can help prepare you to deal with both your illness and the stress of treatment.
• Lean on support networks, including loved ones and your care team. Big decisions don’t need to
be made alone. Talking to others who are also going through this experience can help you gain practical knowledge and feel less isolated.
• Ask for Blue Light Cystoscopy (BLC). BLC is a technology that allows urologists to see tumors that standard White Light Cystoscopy alone may miss.
Better detection can lead to more accurate risk categorization, which drives appropriate disease management and possibly better patient outcomes.
If BLC was not used in your original transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT), it may be worth asking for it to check for residual tumors and ensure accurate diagnosis. In fact, up to 86% of residual tumors are found at the original resection site after initial white-light TURBT.
BLC makes cancer cells in the bladder glow bright pink, which helps make lesions visible and defines their borders. This procedure can be useful in both surveillance and operating room settings.
If you are interested in considering BLC, speak with your urologist. You can also find a list of locations that offer BLC here: https:// rebrand.ly/LocateBLC.
Being your own advocate – or having an advocate work in your best interest – is important when battling bladder cancer and will help in both learning about the best treatment options and accessing them.

Understanding Your Credit Score
Your credit score plays a significant role in your ability to reach your financial goals.
When you apply for a loan, a cellphone, a rental unit or any number of other activities, lenders and potential creditors will look at your credit score to gauge your financial stability and your risk of defaulting on a financial responsibility. The better your score is, the more options will be available to you, including higher chances of getting approved for a loan and better loan terms.
Here’s a look at what financial activities are affecting your credit, as well as some Freddie Mac-approved tips for improving your score.
How do credit scores work? There are many different types of credit scores, but the FICO score is the one used by most lenders. Scores range from 300 to 850 points. According to FICO itself, scores are based on these five factors:
1. Payment history: Payment history accounts for 35% of your credit score and reflects how consistently you’ve made on-time payments.
2. Amount owed: Worth 30% of your score is your amount of outstanding debt. The lower this figure is, the higher your credit score.
3. Length of credit history: Your credit history, which accounts for 15% of your credit score, is based on the length of time you’ve had credit accounts open in your name. A
4. New credit you apply for: Credit inquiries are worth 10% of your credit score. Each time you apply for credit, your score goes down — with one exception: when you’re shopping for a mortgage, student or auto loan, credit scoring models only count one inquiry if your comparison shopping is done within a 14- to 45-day period. Note that inquiries will affect your credit even if you’re denied or ultimately decide against the loan or credit card. Each inquiry affects most scores by 5 points or fewer and can stay on your report for up to 24 months.
5. Types of credit you use: The final 10%
of your score is determined by whether you can responsibly use different types of credit, such as installment and revolving debt.
You can get your free credit report from the three main credit bureaus once every 12 months at www.annualcreditreport.com or by calling 877-322-8228.
What behaviors are good for credit? Your credit score will naturally go up and down as you go about your daily life. However, these actions are associated with good credit:
• Making payments on time.
• Keeping your debt load manageable.
• Using as little of your credit limit as pos-
sible.
• Paying the full amount due, or at least more than the minimum amount due.
• Reviewing credit reports annually.
• Not shopping for too much credit.
How can you improve your score? If your current credit score has been damaged or is otherwise low, set a goal to improve it. In addition to smart credit management, consider taking the following steps:
• Enroll in a free financial education class, such as Freddie Mac CreditSmart, to acquire the building blocks you need to improve your finances and your credit.
• Build credit through rent payments. Unfortunately, rent payments are not automatically factored into your credit score. That means, for many people, their largest monthly expense doesn’t help them build credit. Talk to your landlord about reporting your payments to the three major credit bureaus. If they’re not able to do so, you can do it yourself through a rent reporting service. To learn more, visit myhome.freddiemac.com/ renting/how-get-your-rent-reported-creditbureaus.
Good credit expands horizons. No matter where you are in your financial journey, you can take steps to improve your credit and live the life you want. (StatePoint)
Debunking 5 Common Myths About Root Canal Treatment
If you’ve been told you need a root canal, you may be dreading the procedure or even trying to find a way out of it. The good news? Today’s root canal treatment is nothing like the myths you may see circulating the internet, which are misinformed and simply false.
“The thought of a root canal may make some nervous, but remember that today’s root canal treatments are done quickly and painlessly,” says Dr. Natasha M. Flake, president of the American Association of Endodontists.
Read on for some myth-busting facts from the American Association of Endodontists about this unfairly maligned procedure:
Myth 1: Root canal treatment is painful. With modern technology and anesthetics, you won’t experience any more pain than if you went to have a cavity filled. In addition, endodontists are experts in pain management, and most cases can be treated quickly
and comfortably. And of course, if you’re wishing to avoid discomfort, it’s important to keep in mind that the root canal itself often eliminates the pain you’re already experiencing.
Myth 2: Root canal treatment causes illness. Far from causing illness, root canal therapy actually helps prevent systemic infections by eliminating bacteria from an infected tooth.
This treatment stops the spread of infection, protecting your overall health. Modern medicine and scientific evidence strongly support that root canal therapy is a safe and effective way to address dental infections, preventing them from leading to more serious health issues.
By removing the source of infection, root canal treatment helps maintain both your oral and general health, ensuring that bacteria don’t spread to other parts of your body.
Myth 3: It’s better to pull a tooth than have root canal treatment. Saving your natural teeth, if possible, is always the best option. Nothing artificial can replace the look or function of a natural tooth so it’s important to always consider root canal treatment as an option.
Endodontic treatment has a high success rate and many root canal-treated teeth last a lifetime. Replacing an extracted tooth with a bridge or implant requires more time in treatment and may result in further procedures to neighboring teeth and supporting tissue.
Myth 4: A root canal involves removing the roots of the tooth. A root canal treatment removes only the inflamed or infected pulp on the inside of the tooth. The roots of the tooth are not removed.
Myth 5: If my tooth doesn’t hurt, there is no need for a root canal. While a throbbing
toothache is typically a telltale sign of a need for root canal, there are times a tooth can require treatment when no pain is present. Endodontists are specially trained to test a tooth to see if the pulp has been infected or damaged.
If this is the case, root canal is necessary to remove bacteria from the infected pulp, prevent reinfection and save the tooth. And remember, tooth pain is never normal, so be sure to see an endodontist if you have a toothache. Visit findmyendodontist.com to find one today.
“Root canal treatment helps you maintain your natural smile, continue eating the foods you love and limits the need for ongoing dental work. With proper care, most teeth that have had root canal treatment can last a lifetime,” says Dr. Flake. (StatePoint)
longer credit history can help your score.
7 Reasons Your Feet And Ankles May Be Hurting
Medical experts are reminding everyone that foot and ankle pain is not normal and should be addressed.
“Your feet shouldn’t hurt,” says Matthew C. Dairman, DPM, FACFAS, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and a Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS). “Foot and ankle surgeons are specially trained to diagnose and treat all conditions affecting the foot and ankle, from the simple to the complex. And we can help you with any pain you may be experiencing.”
ACFAS has compiled a handy list some of the more common reasons for foot and ankle pain, as well as suggestions for what you can do to feel better:
1. Shoes: From high heels to flip flops, some popular shoe styles can create painful foot and ankle issues. Choose shoes that cushion and support the foot to prevent pain as well as to provide stability, helping you avoid falls and acute injury. And be sure that your shoes fit correctly. Footwear that’s too large can rub the skin, causing blisters and sores, while a snug fit can aggravate bunions and hammertoes.
2. Overuse: Physical activities like playing
a sport, working out at the gym or even exercising at home can lead to overuse injuries such as Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, bursitis, Morton’s neuroma and stress fractures. You can help prevent overuse injuries with the right footwear and by ramping up training slowly. If you experience pain, take time off to rest until you see your foot and ankle surgeon for proper diagnosis and treatment. It’s the best way to get healthy and get back into the game.
3. Acute injury: Ankle sprains, broken toes, metatarsal fractures and other acute injuries can happen to anyone, but athletes who participate in high-impact sports, like running, soccer and basketball, and those with low bone density are particularly susceptible.
These conditions should be treated immediately.
4. Arthritis: Because the foot contains 26 bones and more than 30 joints, it’s a common site of osteoarthritis, a painful and disabling condition characterized by the breakdown and eventual loss of cartilage in joints. A foot and ankle surgeon may prescribe nonsurgical treatments such as NSAIDs, orthotics, bracing, steroid injections or physical therapy. When osteoarthritis has progressed substantially or failed to improve with nonsurgical treatment, surgery may be recommended.
5. Pregnancy: Prenatal foot pain is common due to increased weight, foot instability and changes in foot size. Wear wider shoes, if needed, to avoid ingrown toenails and to alleviate pain caused by pregnancy-related swelling. Putting your feet up whenever possible, stretching and wearing wide, comfortable, supportive shoes can also ease edemarelated discomfort and pregnancy-related arch pain.
6. Diabetes: There are many diabetes complications associated with feet, including neuropathy, which can involve numbness and pain, muscle weakness and loss of balance, or dry feet and cracked skin. Diabetic neuropathy is a serious condition that also is associated with ulcers, which can easily become infected. Treating diabetic neuropathy involves controlling blood sugar levels, inspecting feet daily, and integrating your foot and ankle surgeon into your diabetes care team.
7. Pediatric foot pain: Pain in a child’s foot or ankle is never normal and there is no such thing as “growing pains.” Your child’s pain could be caused by common pediatric conditions such as flatfeet, ingrown toenails, plantar warts and sports injuries. A child experiencing pain that lasts more than a few days or is severe should be examined by a foot and ankle surgeon.

How You Can Help All Kinds Of People With A Financial Planning Career
One common misconception about financial planners is that their role is solely to help wealthy people create more wealth. In reality, financial planners help all kinds of people in all kinds of circumstances.
Here are a few ways that CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professionals are there for individuals and families in good times and bad.
Pursuing life goals: As a CFP® professional, you will have the training and knowledge required to help people create a holistic financial plan to reach their goals — such as buying a home, financing an education or planning for retirement — on their own timeline.
During a medical crisis: A medical crisis introduces new, sometimes astronomical bills into the equation while often hindering one’s ability to earn income.
That’s where you can make all the difference as a financial planner. Studies have shown that financial intervention in these circum-
stances doesn’t just help families meet their expenses, it can also improve patient outcomes.
When navigating government benefits: Navigating government benefits can be tricky, whether an individual is living with a disability or transitioning from military to civilian life.
From accessing benefits to maintaining one’s eligibility for them, as a CFP® professional, you can help cut through the red tape.
After the loss of a loved one: The loss of a
partner or parent is not only emotionally devastating, it can create financial strife among those left behind, particularly if the deceased was the primary breadwinner or the one responsible for managing financial logistics.
A CFP® professional can provide financial education to the surviving family members, give them a snapshot of their financial situation, assist with managing their assets and help them pave a new path forward.
During unexpected circumstances: Recessions, job loss, natural disasters… the list of unexpected circumstances that can impact a family’s financial future goes on and on. CFP® professionals can partner with individuals to create a financial plan that safeguards their wealth and provides peace of mind.
When unable to pay for services: Perhaps one of the most rewarding aspects of a financial planning career is the opportunity to
provide pro bono services to clients in need. Credit and budget management, as well as education on topics like loans and life insurance, can provide struggling individuals with economic self-sufficiency.
Industry-wide efforts, such as CFP Board’s 100K Pro Bono Challenge, which encourages CFP® professionals to collectively provide 100,000 more pro bono hours than last year, are expanding access to ethical, competent financial advice to more Americans.
In fact, CFP® professionals donate tens of thousands of pro bono hours each year, and the number of professionals who volunteer in this capacity is on the rise.

Getting Involved On 9/11 National Day Of Service And Remembrance
Each year, September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance is a chance to turn a dark day in the nation’s history into a day of doing good.
Now federally recognized, it’s become the largest American day of service, honoring all those who demonstrated extraordinary compassion and courage in the aftermath of the attacks.
Unfortunately, formal volunteerism is on the decline. According to the U.S. Census and AmeriCorps’ “Volunteering in America” report, volunteerism in the United States went down seven percentage points from 2019 to 2023, the largest change since the agencies began collecting data in 2002.
“Volunteers are critical to helping communities thrive, just like they were after 9/11, making this a great day to get involved and start a habit of volunteering,” says Jennifer Sirangelo, president and CEO of Points of Light, a global nonprofit dedicated to inspiring, equipping and mobilizing people to take action that changes the world.
Points of Light recognizes ordinary people doing extraordinary things to strengthen communities with its Daily Point of Light Award.
To boost volunteer engagement
this 9/11 Day and beyond, the organization is sharing the story of an honoree who is also a volunteer first responder, along with information about how you can give back to your community.
Inspired from the Start
While watching the events of 9/11 unfold, 10-year-old Chris Zelenka begged his mother to allow him to travel into the city so he could help the countless first responders he saw on TV.
Seeing so many people working together that day is what sparked his passion for serving others, and led him to join the South Spring Valley Fire Department when he was 16.
Seventeen years after becoming a volunteer firefighter, Zelenka is still tirelessly serving his community.
Along with his firefighting duties, he serves as the department’s financial secretary and co-lead of its fundraising committee.
Over the past several years, he has also worked with nonprofits ranging from Wreaths Across America to Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity and the Bergen County LGBTQ+ Alliance.

(Continued From Page 06)
Boosting Volunteerism
The events of 9/11 bonded people and communities, and in the days, weeks and months following the attacks, volunteerism surged as people learned what they were capable of accomplishing when they worked together.
Points of Light, which is committed to increasing the rate of volunteering, believes that a day of service like 9/11 Day can serve a kick-off to a life of civic engagement.
Zelenka’s words of wisdom for those who want to get involved but don’t know where to start: “Do what you can. That’s the biggest thing. That could be a donation once in a while. That could be giving blood. Obviously more is great, but I think sometimes people think they have to do so much. You can do little things and really make a big change, and it plays a bigger role into the grander scheme of things.”
Take Action
Plan your day of service now by visiting Points of Light’s Engage platform at pointsoflight. org/volunteer to search a database of hundreds of thousands of in-person and virtual volunteer opportunities.
And remember that beyond volunteering, there are many ways to engage your community on 9/11 Day, from buying from businesses that support first responders to thanking those who work in service roles.
“On this day of remembrance, we pay tribute to those touched by the tragedies of this day, and by coming together as a community, we keep hope for a better future alive,” says Sirangelo. (StatePoint)

Indo-Canadian Scientists Say Risk Of Blood Clots Can Be Reduced
ONTARIO (ANI) – Some patients who have heart valve implants suffer severe blood clots, and researchers at the University of Waterloo helped to lead a worldwide effort that minimizes the risk.
Working with a team from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, researchers from Waterloo’s Faculty of Engineering demonstrated that a heart valve implant with a textured surface is less likely to cause blood clots (or thrombosis).
Blood clots in the heart can lead to lifethreatening events such as stroke or heart attack. Patients with heart valve implants undergo lifelong therapy to avoid thrombosis.
The researchers’ new findings are expected to improve health outcomes for many patients.
Certain conditions such as cancer, pregnancy, being over the age of 55, smoking, obesity and immobility all elevate the risk of blood clots after the procedure.
“The implantation of a prosthetic heart valve is a life-saving procedure, but due to
some medical conditions in patients who receive the valves they experience blood clotting, which can be very dangerous,” said Dr. Sushanta Mitra, a professor in Waterloo’s Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering and executive director of the
Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology.
“We used a method to understand how blood will interact with the valves and tested which types of valves are most likely to last longest without blood clots.”
The Waterloo work was led by Dr. Mitra and Dr. Sudip Shyam, a postdoctoral fellow in the Micro Nano-Scale Transport Lab.
They developed an innovative technique that closely resembles conditions inside the body to determine the wettability — the ability of a liquid to maintain contact with a solid surface — of solid objects submerged under liquid.
When the Dutch medical team developed their textured heart valve, they asked the Waterloo engineers to conduct tests on their implant’s reliability with positive results.
“Patients won’t need to have replacement valves as often thanks to this research,” Mitra said.
“They will have a better quality of life postsurgery, and it will extend the length of time required between procedures.” (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

Helping Your Child Overcome Trauma And Thrive
(Continued On Page 01)
Known in the pediatric community as Adverse Childhood Experiences, traumatic circumstances like death, divorce and poverty cause children stress, which over time, can become toxic, impacting a child’s health now, and potentially in the future.
In fact, adults who’ve experienced one or more adverse experiences as a child or who are exposed to ongoing chronic social inequities over time are at higher risk of depression, cancer, heart disease, diabetes and other health conditions during their lifetime.
On the other hand, safe, stable, and nurturing relationships can act as a powerful, protective buffer against the biological harms of toxic stress on children and are key to building resilience, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). When children feel connected and supported in the early years, says a newly updated AAP report, they are more likely to become healthy, competent and educated citizens later in life.
“One of the most important ways
to strengthen a child’s resilience is to spark moments of connection.
This may be through shared book reading, for example, or participating in family routines and community traditions.
Relational health is key to combating adversity, and promoting skills like collaboration, connection and communication that are essential to help children develop resilience and thrive,” said Dr. Nerissa Bauer, a pediatrician who specializes in behavioral health.
After troubling events, the AAP says to remember the 3 Rs: reassure, return to routine and regulate:
1. Reassure. Remind your child that they are safe and loved, using words and touch and by creating safe spaces in the home.
2. Return to routine.
Try to maintain regular daily routines and be sure to explain any changes in the schedule ahead of
Prepare Your Home For Any Kind Of Storm With These Essentials
Natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and wildfires are happening more frequently each year. They’re also becoming more unpredictable, with many disasters taking place outside of the traditional storm season.
Despite the fact that an overwhelming majority of Americans—86%—are concerned that natural disasters will increase in the coming years, many households are not taking steps to prepare. According to a FEMA survey, only 51% of Americans believe they are prepared for a disaster, and only 48% of households report assembling or updating their disaster supplies.
With its long history of supporting communities impacted by disasters through its PowerForward program, Duracell has been bringing personal power to those who need it most since 2011.
Over 15 million batteries through more than 61 deployments have been distributed to affected families to operate storm essentials like flashlights, medical devices, headlamps and more.
With this disaster expertise in mind, Duracell is reminding everyone to prepare their homes for any kind of storm by adding Duracell Batteries with Power Boost ingredients to their emergency supply
kits. Being prepared with batteries you can count on when it matters most not only gives you peace of mind, but protection for your loved ones and the community around you. With a guarantee of 12 years in storage, you can rest assured they’ll be ready when you need them.
To stock your emergency preparedness kit with batteries, visit www. walmart.com, then head to https:// www.fema.gov for a full checklist of disaster supplies. time.
This can promote a sense of safety and normalcy for your child and let them know what to expect.
3. Regulate. Help your child learn “selfregulation” skills to calm themselves and manage their emotions and behaviors.
This may include belly breathing, stretching or taking breaks.
Dr. Bauer also recommends turning to your pediatrician when parenthood gets challenging.
Pediatricians are trained to not only monitor your child’s physical growth, but also their social-emotional health.
They can help your family build a support system―whether a child is relatively healthy, has ongoing
developmental or behavioral concerns, or if your family is going through hard times.
Pediatricians also want to know how parents and household members are doing and if they feel supported.
At appointments, your pediatrician may invite you to share stories about your family life and the daily stresses and struggles of parenting, as well as ask about your own childhood experiences and current living circumstances. So, bring your questions and concerns.
The American Academy of Pediatrics provides tips and guidance on improving relational health, and helping children build resilience and cope with trauma. To learn more, visit healthychildren.org.
“We want to ensure all children and their families have the resources and skills needed to thrive,” Dr. Bauer said.

Tips For Older Americans To Protect Themselves Against Scams
Scammers are getting better at what they do all the time. According to the Data Book, Americans reported losing $10 billion to scams in 2023, a full $1 billion more than in 2022.
While anyone can be a victim, elderly people are often targeted, as they are presumed to have more savings.
According to CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professionals, you can help safeguard your financial future with these tips:
Slow Down
From romance scams to debt and IRS scams, many scammers use emotional appeals to scare or charm their victims into giving up personal information or their money.
Before acting, take a deep breath and speak to a trusted friend or relative who may be able to help you spot a potential scam. Remem-
ber that the IRS initiates contact only through the U.S. mail, not via email, text or social media. You can also do a bit of investigative work yourself. For example, if you receive an email claiming to be your bank or another institution asking you to click on a link, first make sure the request is legitimate.
Do the return address and URL look right? Are there spelling errors? If you’re contacted by text or

sitive documents and online accounts carefully.
Also, never leave bills, statements and other identifying information lying around. You may want to invest in a paper shredder or a file cabinet with a lock so you can dispose of and store documents carefully. You should also ensure all your online accounts have strong passwords that are known only to you.
Finally, consider setting up automatic bill payments. This not only has the benefit of keeping you up-to-date on payments and helping you avoid late fees, it will also reduce the amount of sensitive paperwork you have in your home and receive by mail.
Seek Assistance
If you are the victim of identity theft or another scam, a CFP® professional can help you recover with a smart financial plan.
They can also help you avoid becoming a victim in the first place by helping you monitor your accounts and by setting up notifications from your financial institutions when suspicious activity is detected.
As a fiduciary, they have an ethical obligation to work in your best interests at all times and can be a valuable member of your money team. To find a CFP® professional near you, visit letsmakeaplan.org.
It’s easy to think identity fraud and other financial abuse is something that happens only to other people. But scam tactics are becoming more sophisticated, and anyone can be targeted.
The best defense is staying abreast of the latest tactics and arming yourself with the assistance of trusted advocates. (StatePoint)

Struggling To Make Rent? Here’s What To Know
Upfront and ongoing renting costs can put financial stress on any monthly budget. But whether you are experiencing financial hardship or just need a little extra help to make ends meet, you may have options by working with your property manager.
If you’re struggling to meet either of the two largest financial responsibilities of your lease — your security deposit or rent — here’s what you can do, according to Freddie Mac:
Alternative Security Deposits
The upfront cost of a security deposit can be a challenge for some renters. However, some property managers offer alternatives that de-
crease the amount due at signing. Common options include:
New Survey Identifies Top Classroom And Dorm Décor Trends
Say goodbye to dull, white walls and hello to a world of color and personality!
A new survey by Duck brand finds college students and teachers are on a mission to turn their small spaces into feel-good, stylish surroundings. From creating DIY bulletin boards to covering cubbies and desks with fun prints and patterns, the research uncovers the coolest décor trends for the new school year.
How do they plan to revamp their rooms? Small touches will make the most impact. Over 50% of teachers say hanging a bulletin board, creating a welcome sign and brightening the outside of a desk with removable wallpaper are the most affordable ways for a quick classroom refresh. On the other hand, more than half of students plan to deck out their dorm with canvas art, photo walls, string lights and smart speakers.
“Whether it’s a classroom or campus space, the survey shows most
folks are tapping into personal preferences and using clever decorating hacks to bring their vision to life,” says Kerry Haugh, director of product marketing, duct tapes, at Shurtape Technologies, LLC, the company that markets the Duck brand. “Over 90% of teachers say they decorate their room to express their own style. College students also want their dorms to reflect their individuality, with 43% liking a ‘cozy’ style the best while 28% go for a ‘colorful’ look.”
Since these school spaces are temporary, making them feel warm and welcoming – while keeping décor removable – can be challenging; however, survey respondents plan to use a variety of easy decorating solutions to achieve their dream
• Recoupment: You agree to pay the property manager for any damages up to a pre-approved amount. If you fail to pay for damages at move out, a deposit company will bill you the amount owed.
• Insurance: You pay monthly premiums for an insurance policy, up to a certain limit, to cover any damages you cause.
• Installments: Rather than paying the full deposit at move-in, you’ll pay in smaller installments, typically monthly.
ager may be willing to work out an alternative schedule that allows you to make multiple smaller payments throughout the month.
• Receiving a waiver for late fees or penalties: Late fees and penalties are intended to discourage repeated late payments — but sometimes, unexpected things happen.
If you’re facing a temporary setback but are otherwise in good standing with your property manager, you may be able to negotiate a one-time exception for late fees or penalties.
Navigating the Conversation
More than 60% say they’ll leverage removable, doublesided tape, like Duck Max Strength NanoGrab Gel Tape, to hang items, while more than half plan to use removable wallpaper, such as EasyLiner Removeable Adhesive Laminate, to brighten the outside of a desk or as a fun cover for dorm room appliances. Color and Printed Duck Tape is also a popular pick, with 80% of respondents – teachers and college students alike – saying they’ve used it to personalize school supplies and study spaces.

It’s important to know the different implications of each option. While these alternatives may seem attractive at lease signing, the cumulative out-of-pocket costs may be more than the amount of the traditional security deposit in the long run.
Furthermore, depending on the option you choose, you may also still be liable for costs associated with damages to your unit. Make sure your agreed-upon terms are documented and that you fully understand them.
Rent Flexibility
Talk to your property manager about the flexibility they can provide on your rent payments. There are several common arrangements that they may be willing to offer you, which include:
• Personalizing your payment dates: Most rent payments are due on the first of the month, and many properties typically offer a grace period.
However, depending on your pay day, this timing still may not be ideal. Speak to your property manager about changing your payment due date to better align with your pay cycle.
• Paying in installments: You may find it difficult to cover your full monthly rent in one payment. If this is the case, your property man-
Approaching your property manager can be intimidating. Before your conversation, consider seeking advice from a HUD-certified housing counselor to help you understand your rights and options, and to prepare any relevant information you may need.
As you negotiate with your property manager, keep written documentation of any agreements made. And of course, keep the lines of communication open so that both parties are holding up their end of the agreement.
If you need assistance, reach out to a Renter Resource Organization, which can provide financial planning advice, educate you on your rights and responsibilities as a renter, offer mediation in landlordtenant disputes, provide legal advice and more.
Visit myhome.freddiemac.com/ rros to find an organization servicing your region or call Freddie Mac’s Renter Helpline at 800-4043097 to speak to a HUD-certified housing counselor.

Can Your Home Withstand A Natural Disaster?
With the frequency of natural disasters on the rise, it’s a good idea to think about the components of your house and whether they are built to withstand wicked weather.
Fortunately, manufacturers are stepping up to the plate to create home building products that are stronger and more reliable in the face of hurricanes, wildfires and other disasters. Here’s how you can take advantage of these innovations:
Roofing
If you’re building a home or re-roofing your current property, be sure to talk to your contractor about what roofing products they are using, and ask about innovative steel products bestsuited for your region.
Whether you live in a hurricane-prone coastal community or in the path of wildfires, steel roofing can offer additional protection for your home. Steel roofs are non-combustible, have wind-resistant components and can
help mitigate the risk of fire damage from chimneys, fire pits or wildfires.
In particular, U. S. Steel’s COASTALUME steel is engineered and warranted for coastal environments to bring an
enhanced level of performance and protection against high concentrations of ultraviolet rays, excessive heat and rainfall, sea salt spray and hurricane-force winds. COASTA-
The Ultimate Décor Guide To Transform A Dorm Room
When looking at the drab walls and bare windows of a college dorm room, there’s no need for students to feel “blah.” Instead, dorm dwellers should embrace their new space as a blank canvas that’s ready to be transformed.
With a dash of creativity, a sprinkle of DIY spirit—and some guidance from Duck brand— students can convert the stark space into a cozy, stylish haven that will inspire relaxation and productivity.
Perk Up Walls With Patterns
Adding prints, textures or color to bland white walls doesn’t always have to be a permanent change – but can make a significant difference in spicing up a dorm’s décor. Products like EasyLiner Removeable Adhesive Laminate offer quick, affordable and dorm-friendly solutions to temporarily transform the living space. Whether creating a full-wall brick backdrop, a faux marble backsplash behind desks or dressers, or cut-out geometric shapes for accents, the easy-to-use product offers a wealth of pattern choices for endless creative applications (that can be removed easily at the end of the year).
Add Familiarity With Photos
Living away from home for the first time will likely leave students longing for family and friends. Photos of familiar faces will help get them through any homesickness while help-
ing new friends and roommates get to know them a bit better. Whether making photo collages on posters; hanging individual pics on a decorative string with clothespins; or crafting unique paper frames for memorable moments, students should be sure to hang each image with dorm-approved adhesives that won’t damage the walls. Duck Max Strength Nano-Grab Double-Sided Gel Tape is an ideal choice for mounting any wall art since it offers long-lasting adhesion that applies and removes easily from most surfaces without leaving a sticky residue.
Furnish the Floor
After the walls, the floor is the biggest surface area in the dorm room. Instead of opting for the basic carpet remnants sold on most campuses, college kids can add a textured or fuzzy rug for instant comfort and style. Choose a circular shape or one with vibrant colors and patterns to infuse the room with

Strong Windows
For optimal protection, you’ll want to ensure that your windows exceed your state and county’s strictest codes and requirements and are made from materials that will not only make a big difference during weather events, but also improve your everyday comfort and safety.
personality.
Create Welcoming Windows
Windows are often overlooked in dorm décor, but with a little creativity it’s easy to make them stand out. Students may want to consider sheer curtains to let in natural light, while adding a soft, open feel. If the room doesn’t have curtain hardware installed, they can use a tension rod so as not to damage walls or window frames. For a pop of color or texture, drape colorful fabric or scarves over the window or frame the entire window with strips of removable adhesive laminate.
Pop With Pillows
An effortless and impactful way to add a pop of color and instant decoration to a dorm space is with pillows. Add a mix of sizes, patterns and fabrics to transform a basic bed into a sensational seating area. Or add a few larger pillows to the floor for a cozy study nook. Plus, pillows are easy to swap out, allowing students to change their dorm décor with the seasons without much effort or expense.

For example, hurricane-impact windows that can withstand high-speed impacts typically offer more soundproofing than standard windows, dimming the roar of your neighbor’s early morning lawnmowing. They also make forced entry more difficult, providing an additional layer of security.
And for those in wildfire prone areas, dual pane tempered glass windows provide protection against flames and embers while offering enhanced insulation, a great benefit in extreme temperatures. During key times of year, install storm shutters or fire-rated shutters as an additional safety barrier.
Flooring
Just as your house’s exterior can benefit from the right materials, so too can your interiors. If you live in a coastal or other flood-prone area, traditional hardwood flooring is probably not the right choice for your ground floor or basement, as it can be prone to mildew, mold and warping.
Instead, opt for newer flooring material options, such as vinyl meant to mimic the look and feel of real hardwood or engineered hardwood, made of composite materials with a thin, treated hardwood layer.
Likewise, fire-resistant flooring can reduce the spread of flames through your home when every second counts. Thanks to the array of beautiful design options that are available today, popular fire-resistant choices include stone and concrete.
By relying on the latest engineering innovations, you can help safeguard your property from top to bottom. (StatePoint)

Have A Heart For Caregivers
Survivors of heart attacks or strokes may have additional health and personal care needs, often relying on a family member or close friend to help. While caregivers take on a valuable role, they also pay unique physical and emotional tolls.
In fact, a growing body of scientific research shows people who serve as unpaid caregivers may not get the care they need to live longer, healthier lives, according to the American Heart Association, which is celebrating 100 years of lifesaving service.
Caregiving typically involves a range of duties from providing health care services, such as changing bandages and giving
medications, to helping with personal needs like bathing, dressing and meal preparation. Administrative tasks like scheduling medical appointments, filing insurance claims and paying household bills may also be necessary.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 1 in 5

Learn Hands-Only CPR; research shows most out-ofhospital cardiac arrests happen in the home. Be ready to save a life by calling 9-1-1 and pushing hard and fast in the center of the chest.
“‘Take care of yourself so you can take care of others,’ are definitely words to live by for caregivers –everyone tells you that and it certainly makes sense, but it’s hard,” Kitko said. “There is a lot of stress associated with knowing someone is depending on you … That is why taking care of yourself really should be the first item on your caregiver checklist.”

Essential Tips To Support Your Immune System
The immune system – made up of organs, tissues, cells and proteins
– is your body’s personal defense system against bacteria and viruses, helping ward off illness and infection. Because of the vital role it plays in keeping you healthy, it’s important to take steps to keep your immune system strong.
Consider these healthy habits that can go a long way toward supporting your immune system and maintaining your health.
Practice Proper Hygiene
Good hygiene – and avoiding close contact with people who are sick –is a key component of maintaining a healthy immune system. Practices such as washing your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; covering your nose and mouth with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing; and disinfecting ofttouched objects and surfaces like
doorknobs, light switches, counters and remote controls can help remove germs and reduce their spread.
Consider a Nutrient-Rich Supplement
The body requires many essential nutrients to form the foundation of a healthy immune system. Consider adding a nutrient-rich supplement like Airborne, which has
been reformulated with seven key essential nutrients – vitamins A, C, D and E; zinc; manganese; and selenium. Available in effervescent tablets and chewable gummies, with flavors varying from Zesty Orange to Very Berry and Citrus, the addition of vitamin D and increased levels of zinc mean the improved formula provides the most essential nutrients of any Airborne
immune-supporting supplement.
Maintain a Healthy Diet
Because a poor diet can weaken the immune system, according to research published in “Science Direct,” giving your body the nutrients it needs is key to helping your immune system thrive. Including a variety of fruits and vegetables, which are rich in antioxidants and vitamins, as well as whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats as part of your meals can help strengthen your immune system. Also remember to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and limit processed foods, sugary snacks and beverages high in added sugars that can weaken your immune system and have a negative impact on your health.
Engage in Regular Physical Activity
Donor Outpouring: Harris Has Raised $540 Million
WASHINGTON, DC (REUTERS)
– Vice President Kamala Harris’s election effort has raised around $500 million since she became the Democratic presidential candidate, an unprecedented money haul that reflects donor enthusiasm going into the election.
Harris raised $200 million in the first week of her campaign while she quickly wrapped up support to become the party’s nominee.
Harris’ team raised $310 million in July, bringing the total amount of money raised by her and Biden before he dropped out to more than $1 billion, the most rapid crossing of that fundraising threshold in history, according to the campaign.
Meanwhile, according to federal disclosures filed late on August 20, Harris’s main campaign fundraising group raised four times as much money in July as that raised by Donald Trump’s campaign, Vice President Harris’s campaign told the Federal Election Commission it raised $204 million last month, compared to $48 million
reported to the body by Republican Donald Trump’s main fundraising group.
Harris also outspent Trump during the month, $81 million to $24 million, according to their FEC reports.
While the candidates and their parties work together, the sums raised by the campaign are important because the campaigns are by law
Not only can maintaining a regular exercise routine help build muscle and improve endurance, it helps improve circulation, too, which allows immune cells to move more freely through the body. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week, such as brisk walking, cycling, swimming or dancing. This activity also promotes the production of endorphins and can help reduce stress, further benefitting to your immune system, according to the Mayo Clinic. Just be sure not to push yourself too hard, as excessive exercise can have the opposite effect and put your body under more physical stress.

given steep discounts on television ads, while the parties and other allied groups must pay full price. Trump’s re-election effort also received a massive contribution last month from conservative billionaire Timothy Mellon, who gave the pro-Trump super PAC known as MAGA Inc another $50 million. Mellon, an heir of the Pittsburghbased Mellon banking family, has
given MAGA Inc at least $115 million this year.
The super PAC is one of the biggest spenders in the election and reported spending more than $43 million in July to help Trump’s election effort.
Sleep and immune health are intertwined. In fact, inadequate or poorquality sleep can lead to a higher susceptibility to illness, according to research by the Sleep Foundation. During sleep, your body repairs and rejuvenates itself, so aim for the expert-recommended 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. Establish a regular sleep schedule by going to bed and waking at the same time each day, even on weekends, and create a relaxing routine to signal to your body it’s time to wind down. This may include limiting screen time an hour before bed, reading or practicing relaxation techniques. A comfortable, cool and dark sleep environment can also improve the quality of your sleep.
Manage Stress Levels
Stress, both physical and mental, can weaken your immune system and lead to a higher risk of infection, particularly if it leads to sleep disturbances, reduced water intake, less frequent exercise or unhealthy eating habits. To effectively manage stress, practice relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga or deep breathing and prioritize selfcare through activities you find relaxing like reading, listening to music, journaling, exercising or spending time outdoors. Sinthan Top: Hidden Wonder Of Kashmir
One of Kashmir’s less well-known tourist destinations is Sinthan Top, a steep mountain pass that lies in the Anantnag district between Kishtwar and the Daksum valley. However, the majority of it is found on the Kishtwar side.
If you have been here, you are surely aware of the breathtaking splendor of this magnificent location. If you haven’t been to Kashmir yet and are thinking about going, this mountain pass should be at the top of your list of places to visit.
We guarantee that those looking for adventure and uncharted territory in the Alps are the ones who should use this mountain route. You will surely have a once-in-alifetime experience once you arrive, even though the routes leading to this location are undoubtedly difficult and demanding.
Sinthan Top, nestled in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas in Jammu and Kashmir, India, stands at an elevation of approximately 3,700 meters (12,139 feet) above sea level. Accessible via the Kishtwar-Anantnag Road, it offers breathtaking vistas of lush meadows, dense forests, and snow-capped peaks. Popular for adventure activities like trekking, camping, and paragliding, it also attracts visitors with its diverse wildlife, including the Himalayan black bear and snow leopard. The region experiences mild summers, ideal for outdoor exploration, and snowy winters, perfect for winter sports enthusiasts.
Rich in local culture, Sinthan Top provides opportunities to interact with the Gujjar and Bakarwal tribes and explore nearby attractions like the Martand Sun Temple and Aharbal Waterfal.
The Historical Significance of Sinthan Top Nestled amidst the pristine beauty of the Pir Panjal Range in Kashmir, Sinthan Top stands as a silent witness to the passage of time and the rich tapestry of history woven across its rugged terrain. While known for its breathtaking vistas
and adventurous escapades, this region also harbors whispers of ancient civilizations and tales of bygone eras waiting to be unearthed.
At the heart of Sinthan Top’s historical significance lies its strategic location, serving as a crossroads for trade routes and cultural exchange since antiquity. Traces of ancient civilizations dot the landscape, hinting at a vibrant past shrouded in mystery. Archaeological expeditions have unearthed remnants of ancient settlements, pottery shards, and primitive tools, offering tantalizing glimpses into the lives of those who once inhabited these rugged mountains.
One of the most intriguing archaeological sites in the vicinity of Sinthan Top is the ruins of Martand Sun Temple, located in Anantnag district. Dating back to the 8th century CE, this magnificent temple complex was dedicated to the Sun God and served as a center of worship and pilgrimage during the heyday of the Kashmiri empire. Though time and turmoil have taken their toll, the grandeur of Martand Sun Temple still echoes through its weathered pillars and intricately carved facades, standing as a testament to Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage.
Further exploration reveals a network of ancient trails and footpaths crisscrossing the landscape, linking remote villages and mountain passes. These pathways, once trodden by merchants, pilgrims, and adventurers, are imbued with stories of hardship and perseverance, offering a glimpse into the challenges faced by travelers in ages past.
As one delves deeper into the history of Sinthan Top, tales of conquest and conflict emerge, echoing the tumultuous political landscape of Kashmir through the centuries. From the medieval era onwards, the region witnessed the rise and fall of empires, the clash of civilizations, and the ebb and flow of power dynamics.
Fortresses and defensive structures perched atop rugged cliffs bear silent testimony to the strategic im-
portance of this mountainous terrain, serving as bastions of defense against marauding armies and rival kingdoms.
Yet, amidst the echoes of war and conquest, there exists a quieter, more contemplative side to Sinthan Top’s history. Monastic retreats nestled in secluded valleys speak of spiritual seekers and ascetic traditions that flourished in these remote corners of the Himalayas. The austere beauty of these ancient monasteries, adorned with vibrant
murals and sacred relics, offers solace to weary travelers and pilgrims seeking refuge from the chaos of the world.
In unraveling the stories of Sinthan Top and its surrounding areas, one discovers not just a chronicle of the past, but a tapestry of human endeavor, resilience, and ingenuity woven into the fabric of the land.
From the whispers of ancient civilizations to the echoes of medieval glory, each stone, each ruin, bears witness to the enduring spirit of Kashmir and its timeless allure. (Courtesy: https://www.kashmirhills.com/)
Tenali Raman And The Cursed Man
In the kingdom of Vijayanagara lived a man named Ramaya. He was regarded inauspicious by the people of the town. They believed that if they saw him the first thing in the morning, their entire day would be cursed and they would not be able to eat anything throughout the day.
anymore. Since he had not eaten anything, he could not concentrate on his work.
This story reached the king’s ears too. He invited Ramaya to his palace to know the truth. He ordered his attendants to make everything available for Ramaya’s stay in the room just next to his room. The next morning, the king without meeting anyone, went to Ramaya’s room first to see his face. In the afternoon, the king sat down for lunch, but could not eat anything since there was a fly sitting in his plate. He ordered the cook to prepare lunch for him again. By the time, lunch was prepared, Krishnadevaraya did not feel like eating
He realised that whatever the people said was indeed true. Thus he decided that a jinxed man like Ramaya should not live and ordered his soldiers to hang him.
The soldiers didn’t want to hang him, but they could not disobey their king.
After coming to know about her husband’s punishment, Ramaya’s wife rushed to seek Tenali’s help. With a lot of grief and tears streaming down her eyes, she told Tenali Raman everything.
The next morning, when the soldiers were taking Ramaya to hang him, they met Tenali Raman on the way. Tenali whispered something in Ramaya’s ears and went. When the guards asked Ramaya for his last wish before being hanged, he said that he wanted to send a note to the king.
The guard handed over the note to the king. The king read the note in which it was written that if seeing my face, one loses his appetite all day, then a person seeing king’s face, first thing in the morning is destined to lose his life.
So then who was more cursed – he or the king? The King understood what Ramaya meant and set him free.

Stay Protected By Understanding The Need For Vaccines
As health needs evolve throughout life, it can be easy to forget how crucial vaccinations can be for protecting against preventable diseases. Many associate vaccines with childhood, remembering the series of shots received during early school years. However, vaccination importance extends far beyond adolescence.
Vaccines are not just for children attending elementary school and college students returning to campuses – they should be incorporated into a lifelong commitment to health and wellness.
Whether required or recommended, vaccinations can play a pivotal role in safeguarding individual health and promoting community well-being. That’s why now is an excellent time to check in and make sure your family members are protected from infectious diseases at every stage of life.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), vaccines help create protective antibodies that fight infections. The experts at the CDC state childhood vaccinations, such as MMR (measles, mumps and rubeola), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) and HPV, are known to prevent around 4 million global deaths annually. However, only 1 in 5 adults are up to date on their vaccines, highlighting a critical gap in public health awareness and readiness.
Vaccines work by training immune systems to recognize and combat harmful viruses or bacteria. The immune system’s efficiency can decrease while aging, making people more susceptible to diseases. That’s why staying current with recommended vaccines is essential throughout each person’s life.
Protecting Your Community Community pharmacies and clinics, such as the Kroger Family of Companies’ Pharmacies and The Little Clinic LLC, are accessible options for people seeking the health care services they need outside of traditional settings. These facilities offer a range of high-qual-
ity services, including medication counseling, health screenings and immunizations.
This convenience is crucial for routine preventive care, including year-round vaccine administration, which should not be limited to a single season. Vulnerable populations, including those ages 60 and older, individuals with chronic diseases and some minority populations, are more at risk for contracting certain infections. These groups may need to maintain updated vaccinations and boosters throughout the year. For children younger than 5 years of age, check with your local pharmacist or clini-
cian for vaccine guidelines.
Unlike some traditional health care settings, retail pharmacies and clinics are often located within local communities and have extended hours that cater to busy schedules, allowing people to get their families vaccinated with more flexibility. In fact, 90% of the U.S. population lives within 5 miles of a community pharmacy.
Options like the Kroger Family of Companies’ Pharmacies, The Little Clinic and other retail pharmacies offer vaccine administration within their pharmacy and clinic locations, making vaccinations a seamless part of the health care experience they provide.
Trusting Medical Professionals
Pharmacists and clinicians with Kroger Health are available during convenient times to provide advice on vaccinations you and your family may need. Pharmacists and nurse practitioners can provide recommendations based on your age, health conditions and lifestyle. They can also address concerns or
questions about vaccines to help you make the best decisions for you and your family.
Vaccines are a cornerstone of preventive health care, helping peoples’ bodies produce protective antibodies that can defend against infections and promote overall health. That’s why staying up to date with vaccinations is important at all ages. With a commitment to safeguarding families through comprehensive vaccination services, a local team of medical professionals can offer professional, credible and convenient health care solutions under one roof.

6 Steps To Help Teens Plan Financially For The Future
For teenagers, retirement may seem like a lifetime away, but it’s never too early to start saving for the future. Because financial habits can be created at a young age, the sooner kids begin to save and learn about investing, the less likely they’ll face worries about money when they eventually stop working.
Teens are already thinking about retirement, according to the Achievement Teens & Retirement Survey conducted by Wakefield Research on behalf of Junior Achievement and MissionSquare Retirement’s Foundation.
Among young adults ages 13-18 surveyed, 83% have thought about their retirement and 78% believe they’ll be able to retire comfortably when the time comes. However, only 60% view retirement as living on investments and savings after leaving work, believing instead retirement could mean taking extended time off for travel, study, illness or taking care of family matters.
“This research shows retirement is more top-of-mind for teens than one might think,” said Tim Greinert, president of Junior Achievement USA. “While young people have given retirement planning some thought, it’s apparent they still need information on the best way to go about it.”
Because nearly half of U.S. households (46%) report having nothing saved for retirement, according to
the Survey of Consumer Finances, taking steps early to save and invest can help teens get a head start on achieving a successful retirement.
1.Start now. The sooner you start, the longer you have to save and for investments to grow. Even though contributions may be small during your teens and 20s, it can make a dramatic difference in the long run.
2.Pay yourself first. Whether through a dedicated savings account or an employer’s retirement plan, set aside a set percentage of each paycheck. Then prioritize spending on what you truly need and want.
3.Invest what you save. Unless you save a lot, you’ll need to make the most of your savings by investing them to help them increase in value.
According to the survey, teens believed investing in stocks and bonds with the help of a financial advisor (45%) or researched online (38%), buying real estate or property (30%) and buying cryptocurrency or non-fungible tokens (15%) are among the best ways to save for retirement.
4.Find the right balance between investment risk and potential return. The ideal mix is one most likely to help meet investment goals with a level of risk you can handle. The longer you have to invest, the more risk you can likely take.
5.Spread savings across different types of investments. This helps you manage risk. As some investments go through rough stretches, others are likely to hold steady or grow.
6.Stick with your investing plan. Avoid making decisions based on emotions or in an attempt to time the ups and downs of the market. Focus instead on meeting goals over time.
“The fact that so many young adults in the early stages of their careers are aware of a variety of investment strategies is encouraging news,” said Deanna Santana, president, MissionSquare Foundation. “Over the course of our lifetimes, investment approaches, the economy and our priorities will change, so planning for life after work is an ongoing necessity – for teens and adults alike.”

How Schools Are Helping End Student Hunger
(Continued From Page 01) One powerful solution to youth food insecurity begins in the nation’s schools. Nearly 30 million students – more than 60% of all schoolchildren – rely on school meals for all or part of their daily nourishment, according to the USDA. For many, these meals are the only reliable source of nutrition they receive each day.
Explore these “ABC’s” of how school meals and the dedicated professionals behind them are key to ensuring nutrition equity and food justice for all children.
A. School meals are healthier than many realize.
According to a survey by national nonprofit GENYOUth, nearly half of Americans are unaware children receive their healthiest meals at school. A study from Tufts University concluded “schools are now the single healthiest place
Americans are eating,” by offering healthy nutrition including milk and dairy, whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean proteins.
“As school meals lay a foundation for children to develop strong minds and bodies, we are committed to scaling proven solutions to ensure every child is well-nourished and ready to learn,” said GENYOUth CEO Ann Marie Krautheim, MA, RD, LD.
B. School breakfast fuels academic success.
Research shows students are more likely to skip breakfast than any other meal, but those who eat breakfast are setting themselves up for academic success.
Students who start their days with nutritious breakfasts are more likely to score higher on standardized tests, improve concentration and
memory, and maintain better attendance.
On the flip side, kids who skip breakfast are not only missing out on these benefits – they’re also less likely to eat healthy in general.
C. Innovative school-meal equipment boosts breakfast participation.
Cutting-edge school meal equipment and models, such as graband-go mobile meal carts, breakfast in the classroom and second chance breakfast, are breaking down barriers of time and stigma, leading to up to a 58% increase in average daily school meal participation.
Additionally, smoothie programs are making school breakfast more appealing, offering students delicious, drinkable combinations of milk, yogurt and fruit.
Now in its second decade of ser-
vice, GENYOUth has increased access to 11.8 billion nutritious school meals nationwide.
“No child living in one of the world’s most food secure nations should go hungry or without access to affordable, health-promoting foods,” said Barb O’Brien, chair of GENYOUth’s board of directors and president and CEO of Dairy Management Inc.
“Dairy farmers and the broader U.S. dairy community’s decadeslong commitment to support child nutrition programs, including schools, helps to ensure equitable access to nutritious foods like dairy that help children thrive and that support a positive food future for all.”
To help make sure the only hunger a child feels is the hunger to learn, visit GENYOUthnow.org and discover how you can make a difference. (Family Features)

This event not only provided these children with the tools they need for the school year but also fostered a robust sense of community spirit. The dedication from both participants and donors was palpable, ensuring that these children are well-prepared and supported as they embark on their educational journeys.
This significant event, organized in partnership with Shalom Austin, took place on August 4th at the Dell Jewish Community Center and saw an impressive turnout of nearly 300 volunteers from all walks of life. The event was made possible thanks to the success of the “Bollywood Meets Borscht Belt” (BMBB) fundraiser in April, which raised over $40,000. Additionally, it received a grant from the City of Austin’s “We All Belong” initiative, which aims to foster community unity and provide critical resources.
The backpacks were meticulously packed with notebooks, pencils, crayons, and other necessary supplies tailored to the specific needs of children, by grade, across various ISDs, including Austin ISD and Del Valle ISD, as well as organizations like Greater Love Baptist Church, Veterans, and the African American Youth Foundation (AAYHF). Volunteers from renowned organizations such as Accenture, Dell, and the Boy Scouts of America joined hands with families, friends, and school employees, contributing to the event’s seamless execution and enormous success.
Carla Scott, Project HELP Supervisor & District Homeless/Foster Care Liaison at Austin ISD, highlighted the event’s impact: “These backpacks support our homeless, foster, and military-connected students, providing them with normalcy and the tools they need to succeed despite challenging circumstances.” The collective efforts of volunteers and the community’s spirited involvement underscored the event’s mission to ensure that every child starts the school year equipped and confident.

Make Protecting Kids’ Eye Health A Priority
Annual checkups are an important step in protecting your child’s eye health and vision, but families tend to see the eye doctor less regularly than their primary care doctor, pediatrician or dentist.
This year, ZEISS Vision Care commissioned a study that found only 47% of parents reported taking their children to an optometrist annually, but 78% saw their primary care doctor each year and 71% made a trip to the dentist.
The study also revealed 82% of parents with kids ages 18 and younger are concerned about their children experiencing digital eyestrain from using electronics.
Parents in the survey reported a variety of behaviors to protect their children’s eyes, including screen time breaks and using glasses, including those with blue light and ultraviolet (UV) ray blocking features.
Learn how you can protect your child’s eye health with these tips from the experts at ZEISS.
Don’t wait for your child to complain about fuzzy vision.
Kids’ eye muscles are adaptable, making it possible for them to have functional vision even when they need a high degree of refractive correction for nearsightedness or farsightedness.
Often, kids don’t realize better vi-
sion is even possible until they have a thorough exam.
Watch for signs of poor vision. Although your child may not directly complain about having trouble seeing, you may notice symptoms that don’t necessarily equate to vision. Headaches and burning causing itching and rubbing the eyes are
symptoms that may be attributed to allergies or other causes. Dry eyes and tearing are also symptoms of vision strain. You might find your child squinting or holding objects close or farther away.
Sometimes a lack of interest in reading or difficulty concentrating are also related to vision.
Look for kid-friendly corrective eyewear. The shape of the face, distance between the eyes and other proportions gradually change as children develop, which influences the position of eyeglass lenses.

In addition, the pupil diameter increases in children and young people while it shrinks again in adults.
This means lenses designed for adults aren’t necessarily well-suited for children. Options like ZEISS Single Vision SmartLife Young lenses are specially adapted to the anatomy and lifestyle of growing children.
Individual, continuously changing parameters, such as the distance between the eyes, are integrated
into the lens design.
As a result, they provide up to 60% wider fields of clear view along with full, sunglass-level UV protection in thin, lightweight lenses that can be customized with blue light protection and scratch-resistant coatings that are aesthetically pleasing.
Protect eyes from potential risks. Require kids to wear protective eyewear when participating in activities, like certain sports, that could harm their eyes.
Sunglasses make it easier to see in bright sunlight, but they also protect the eyes from harmful UV rays.
Schedule annual exams. Checking in with your child’s eye doctor each year is essential for protecting eye health and vision.
If your child wears glasses, verifying his or her prescription is still appropriate is important. If not, it’s still a good idea to monitor for changes.
“As a mom and eye care professional, I understand firsthand the importance of taking care of your children’s eye health now so they maintain healthy vision later in life,” said Dr. Jennifer Wademan, OD.
“Children have different eye care needs than adults and not only require annual comprehensive vision exams but also eye care products and solutions like the ZEISS SmartLife Young lenses designed specifically to address their anatomy and age-specific needs.” Find more resources to protect your child’s eye health and vision at zeiss.com/ smartlifeyoung (Family Features)
Be Proactive To Prevent Heart Attacks And Strokes
Millions of Americans are at risk for lifethreatening cardiovascular events due to high cholesterol, a condition nearly everyone has heard of yet just a fraction fully understand. In fact, many don’t realize they have high levels of harmful cholesterol until they experience a heart attack or stroke.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 71 million adults in the United States have high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, also known as “bad” cholesterol. Of these, nearly 50 million Americans do not have LDL cholesterol levels under control and are at higher risk for cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke.
Protecting yourself and your loved ones from the effects of high LDL cholesterol starts by arming yourself with key information.
What is High LDL Cholesterol?
“Your body needs cholesterol – a waxy, fat-like substance – to work properly,” said Stephen Pinkosky, PhD, vice president, drug discovery and early development at Esperion. “However, having too much LDL cho-
lesterol can lead to blockages in your arteries. Often impacted by both lifestyle choices and genetics, it’s important to maintain an LDL cholesterol level recommended by your health care provider.”
What are the Risks of High LDL Cholesterol?
“It’s often not until there may be a large blockage of the artery that you notice something is wrong, such as chest pain, pain in the arms or jaw, nausea, sweating, shortness of breath or weakness,” Pinkosky said.
“These symptoms can occur when blood supply to the heart or brain is being slowed or blocked.”
These blockages, which may not have previously caused symptoms, can rupture and
cause major problems, including heart attack or stroke. According to the American Heart Association, the first sign of elevated LDL cholesterol may be a deadly cardiovascular event for some people.
According to the World Health Organization, elevated LDL cholesterol causes more deaths than all forms of cancer combined and accounts for around 1 in 3 deaths in the U.S. and Europe. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates heart disease deaths will increase 25% by 2030.
What Can People Do to Get Cholesterol in Check?
One of the best ways to take care of your health is to be proactive. Even if you’re feel-
ing fine, it’s a good idea to get your LDL cholesterol levels checked and discuss the results with your health care provider to determine the best treatment option for you, if needed.
Your care team will consider your LDL cholesterol level, along with any other factors that make a heart attack or need for a heart procedure more likely to occur, such as your age, sex, family history (genetics), presence of diabetes or high blood pressure and lifestyle (like whether or not you smoke and your diet).
For those with high LDL cholesterol, there are options to get your level under control. Studies show reducing LDL-C levels with certain cholesterol lowering medications may reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events.
Consult your health care provider if you are unsure of your LDL cholesterol level or want to discuss options to lower your level. To learn more about high LDL cholesterol risks and management, visit cardiosmart.org.

‘Thangalaan’ - Even If Not As Sparkly, This Film Still Gives You Plenty To Chew On
Pa Ranjith really knows how to create a world. Never once during Thangalaan do you doubt the authenticity of its period setting—of clothes, of language, of behaviour, of the land and lives of Thangalaan (Vikram), Gangamma (Parvathy), their children, and their community.
But yes, having been raised on Bala’s cinema, we know that when villagers are shown to live peacefully, rather self-sufficiently, horror soon beckons. And sure enough, like in a Bala film, we see these naive, trusting people get led to a horror house. However, the fundamental difference between both filmmakers is, of course, that while Bala is a bit of a fatalist, Ranjith is a revolutionary. And that’s why the latter won’t delve too much into the how of the villagers’ exploitation. In a speedy montage that shows great craft, he establishes the passage of time through quick snapshots of their suffering.
What are we moving towards though? For the longest time, I couldn’t figure out what Thangalaan was. For a while, the film feels like it could be the story of exploitation. As the first half picks up and Thangalaan and team set out on an expedition along with their British masters, Thangalaan begins to wear the garb of an adventure film. Man versus nature, as they all almost drown in a river.
Man versus nature again, as a black panther threatens to halt them. In between, there’s quite a bit of magical realism as well, with Thangalaan haunted by visions, with a warrior-goddess haunting different members of his family. You see, there’s a story—or is it history turned into myth?—that has haunted Thangalaan and his ancestors for ages.
Ranjith toys with the delicious idea of this folk tale coming alive in Thangalaan’s life. It’s a story that has perhaps played out in the lives of his ancestors too. It’s a familiar story, you see, of sacrificing pride, identity and property, and toiling for someone else’s benefit, so you can be thrown scraps for wages.
It’s a story about blood gushing out of a dying deity figure, so land can turn into gold. The meaning is not hard to grasp. And yet, for all this meaning, as the folktale plays out in Thangalaan’s life, I asked myself why it wasn’t as emotionally powerful as it ought to be. Is it a problem with the folktale itself and how compellingly it’s presented? Did we perhaps need to know more about how Thangalaan was affected by this story before it gets super imposed on his life? Did we perhaps need to know more about him in the first place? In its quest to be an adventure, to go places, perhaps there isn’t enough time for the kind of intimate moments that Ranjith is so good with usually.
Perhaps for that reason, Thangalaan is a strangely unaffecting film, even though the ideas are all there—and armed with incredible performances too, especially from Vikram and Parvathy (to the point of being almost distracting). Vikram wearing Western clothes is sold as a mass moment but watch how carefully he never quite occupies it. Parvathy too gets a new garment at one point, and she responds to it with a sort of unabashed innocence that’s quite rare on screen.
Thangalaan feels like a potent short story stretched to fit the duration of a feature film—one about a man haunted by a short story himself, dealing with the incredible feeling of seeing it come true in his life to transformative effect. It’s almost like the origins of the great, sad gold story—almost like Ranjith is asking himself where it must have all begun and what it must have taken for plunderers to gain such easy access to our wealth. But then, Ranjith also asks, what is true wealth?
What is real gold? Hint: Character name. Hint: Golden appearance at the end of the film. Thangalaan is a film about a search party on the lookout for gold, yes, but it’s deep enough to launch a critique of material greed by telling us that one’s identity, one’s harmonious existence with the environment, is real wealth. This isn’t politics; this is
profound enough to be philosophy. During the Thangalaan journey, Ranjith touches upon the symbolic death of Buddhism. He speaks of the ills of Brahminism. There’s a passing line about Ramanujam and a reference to other castes being converted as Brahmins. Pasupathy hits a wonderful balance of being both comic and serious about his character, based on the needs of the film. His laughable aspiration of reaching vaikuntam is in stark contrast to the film’s point that heaven is possible on earth—and its insight into how religion sometimes serves to distance people from reality, leaving them praying for escapist resolutions. Also, through Thangalaan, we once again see
Ranjith’s takedown of reliance on leader figures for salvation. The villagers also see the pitfalls of falling prey to chasing someone else’s version of happiness.
My favourite part of the film is how the hero, Thangalaan, takes a long time to behave like… a hero. He’s loving and naive, sure, but his thinking is all wrong. Perhaps that’s why he’s referred to as ‘satan’ for a while. Perhaps that’s why he’s so remorseless about all the animal life he’s killing. He casually decapitates a buffalo, many snakes, and smacks a black panther about. It’s not quite befitting the compassion that a Ranjith protagonist is usually capable of (“Paravayoda gunam parakkardhu, adha parakka vidu.”).
There are more traditional villains too, of course. There’s the nosy, crafty Brahmin supervisor. There’s the British leader of the expedition about whom Ranjith keeps
us guessing for the longest time. Among the best moments in the film is when he speaks about wanting to help the villagers and the Brahmin supervisor mistranslates his English. However, Thangalaan sees right through it—and it makes for a lovely moment.
It’s a mark of the thought—and the craft—that Ranjith puts into these films that even though I didn’t resonate as well with Thangalaan as I have with other films of his, I still think it would be a disservice to dismiss this work. It would mean a refusal to acknowledge some striking moments—like that final fight scene that seems to happen across day and night, that seems to stretch across time. The battle between an oppressor and the oppressed is, of course, one that has gone on forever. But that’s all right; you can see he’s still experimenting with form and more brazenly, the kind of stories that can be told in mainstream cinema and with a star no less. That’s its own kind of gold.
