Strategies For Building Your Small Business

As an entrepreneur, you are the expert in the goods and services you offer customers. However, you may be less familiar with the financial aspects of running your business.

Incorporating a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional into your stable of advisors is a smart way to ensure that you’re growing your business sustainably. Here are some important financial planning strategies a CFP® professional can assist you with:

1. Selecting a corporate structure: Each type of corporate structure is subject to its own tax code and financial liabilities. Determining which structure makes the most sense for your business is fundamental, but complex, given the wide range of factors involved. A CFP® professional can help you navigate this decision to your advantage. As your business scales, remain in conversation with your advisor to ensure that your corpo-

rate structure classification is not adversely impacting your cash flow.

2. Sorting your expenses: Your business feels personal, but it’s important to keep your business and personal expenses separate. A CFP® professional can help you establish a plan for managing personal and business finances in a

way that allows you to reach your financial goals.

Side note for expense sorting: Be sure to deduct all overhead when preparing your taxes. If you’re not deducting expenditures such as travel, auto expenses, home office utility bills, marketing materials and continuing education associated with your industry, you’re leav-

ing money on the table.

3. Saving for retirement: While retirement may not be top of mind when launching your own business, it’s important to plan for it. One of the great benefits of being your own boss is having the freedom to maximize your retirement savings. A CFP® professional can help you make sense of options such as IRAs, 401(k)s with profitsharing and solo 401(k)s, and help you select the one that will reduce your taxable income now and pave the way for a comfortable future.

On a related note, building a retirement plan into the benefits you offer your employees will make your company a more attractive place to work, helping you secure the best talent.

4. Maintaining personal financial health: While you’re growing your

business, it can be easy to lose sight of your family’s financial health. A CFP® professional can help you protect your personal assets and continue moving toward your other financial goals at a time when your business seems like a top priority.

These are just a few of the areas in which a financial advisor can help your business be successful. They can also offer cash flow analysis, advise on your insurance needs, create a succession roadmap and more. For additional insights into small business financial planning, and to find a CFP® professional to work with, visit LetsMakeAPlan. org.

Taking Out Student Loans? How To Borrow

It’s never too early to start working with a financial advisor. There are many stages in your life when you could benefit from the advice of a financial professional, including when you are young and taking out student loans, or in the process of paying them off.

With a record $1.7 trillion in outstanding student loan debt among U.S. students, it’s likely that your own debt is burdensome on your wallet. Here are several ways a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional can help:

Understanding your loan terms. Before you take out a loan, a CFP® professional can help you understand its terms -- including whether it’s a fixed rate or variable rate loan and what its repayment terms are -- and can help you make a selection that works best for your budget and anticipated future salary.

They can also help you strategize so that you borrow only what you need.

Paying your loan back. It can be tricky to determine a loan repayment strategy that will reduce the overall cost of your loan while allowing you to budget for and manage other expenses. Lean on the wisdom of your CFP® profes-

sional. They can help you weigh the pros and cons of consolidating your student loan debt with other consumer debt and may suggest other options based on your unique circumstances, such as refinancing your loan.

Improving your credit. As many young people soon discover, the

way you manage your student loans can have a large impact on your credit history, particularly if you default on payments.

Your CFP® professional can help you maintain a healthy credit score during the repayment process and beyond so that you don’t adversely impact your future ability to finance bigticket items, like cars or homes.

Preparing for the future. It’s never too early to create a holistic financial plan that accounts for your retirement and other future financial goals.

In fact, small contributions now have the power to grow exponentially in the years ahead and can

help you avoid playing catch-up when you’re in your 30s, 40s and 50s.

Your CFP® professional can help you draft an overall budget that balances paying down your student debt, meeting today’s day-to-day expenses and preparing for your golden years with tax-advantaged savings strategies.

As a young person, it’s especially important to work with someone you know you can trust. To find a CFP® professional committed to acting in your best interest, visit LetsMakeAPlan.org.

With a thoughtful borrowing strategy informed by the expertise of a financial advisor, you can earn the college degree you need for the career you want while maintaining healthy finances. (StatePoint)

Why Men Should Talk About Their Health

American men may be neglecting their health and wellness, particularly when it comes to their urological health. But an open line of communication between men and their healthcare providers, and among family members, can lead to better care.

A Cleveland Clinic survey found that only 3 out of 5 men get annual physicals and 55% do not get regular health screenings. What’s more, many men shy away from the subject of their health, with 77% reporting that they don’t know their complete family history when it comes to urological issues.

“There is a clear need to fill care gaps and destigmatize men’s health issues,” says Shaun Noorian, CEO and founder of Empower Health, a compounding pharmacy that supports patients with men’s health concerns such as testosterone, sexual wellness, prostate health and gynecomastia.

Fortunately, innovations in the health care industry that are ex-

panding access to tailored care are helping fill these gaps and helping health care providers support their patients’ needs more effectively.

Noorian’s own story shows how a compounding pharmacy helped him optimize his health. His doctor recommended compounded medications after a health and wellness check of his hormones. The compounded medications provided the exact dosage and strength prescription he needed, which can’t al-

ways be found through traditional medicines. But compounding goes beyond hormones. Noorian discovered it could also address various men’s health concerns like testosterone, sexual wellness, urology and dermatology.

Noorian says that men can use these tips for a happy, healthier life:

• Don’t wait until you have a serious medical condition to see your doctor. Schedule annual physicals

and all recommended health care screenings.

• Destigmatize men’s health issues by talking to male family members about prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths for men in the United States and a man is two to three times more likely to get prostate cancer if his father, brother or son had it. You should also talk to your primary care doctor or urologist about having a blood test and examination, particularly if you have a family history of the disease.

• Erectile dysfunction affects nearly 30 million men of all ages across the United States, according to the Indiana University School of Medicine, which notes that it could be the sign of another underlying health issue. Your urologist can help rule out causes, like heart disease and high blood pressure.

• When dealing with men’s health issues, talk to your healthcare provider about all available treatment options, including the potential

benefits of using a compounding pharmacy. Compounded medicine enables healthcare providers to prescribe treatments that are specifically tailored to individual biomarkers (biological molecules found in body fluids or tissues that are a sign of a condition or disease) by dosage and formulation. By analyzing biomarker data, compounded medications can be formulated with precise dosages and combinations of more than one active pharmaceutical ingredient, optimizing therapeutic outcomes for a wide range of health conditions.

To learn more about how compounding pharmacies can support men’s health, visit empowerpharmacy.com.

“For the best care possible, men should be proactive about their health, and providers should explore with their patients all available treatment options, including personalized solutions,” says Noorian. (StatePoint)

13 Things Homeowners Should Know To Stay Safe At Home

Did you know that adhering to proper building safety codes and standards can prevent thousands of accidents each year and save homeowners significant repair costs?

Proper knowledge of building codes and the importance of permits and inspections can help homeowners avoid costly mistakes and ensure their projects are safe and compliant.

Building Safety Month shines a spotlight on the essential role of modern building codes and standards in ensuring public safety. This campaign, led by the International Code Council, brings together insights from leading experts in building safety, including code officials, building inspectors and residential building specialists.

Building safety professionals are lifelong learners, constantly adapting to new codes and building materials. Similarly, homeowners must continue to stay informed about their properties to ensure longevity and safety.

Here’s what the Code Council wishes homeowners knew about maintaining and improving their homes safely and effectively:

1. Embrace Building Safety Professionals: Building safety professionals are valuable allies and can assist in ensuring that contractors perform their work correctly. This oversight protects you from potential safety hazards and financial losses, offering peace of mind throughout home improvement projects.

2. Understand the Reasons Behind Permits: Permits are not just logistic hurdles; they are

(Continued From Page 01) The Consulate General of India in New York, in partnership with Times Square Alliance, celebrated

the 10th International Day of Yoga at Times Square. “The day-long celebration of Yoga, also known as ‘Solstice at Times Square’, featured seven yoga sessions, in which about 10,000 people from various nationalities participated, showcasing the widespread enthusiasm for yoga in New York City and the US,” the consulate said.

Consul General Binaya Pradhan greeted the

participants and highlighted the benefits of yoga for both physical health and spiritual well-being, as well as its role in promoting harmony.

“As you can see, we have yoga participants from several nationalities, and this is going to go on for the entire day today. We are expecting about 8,000 to 10,000 participants who will do yoga along with us.

I’m really happy that this year, the theme of Yoga Day is yoga for self and society. I’m sure this is going to inspire everybody who is participating here today and in other parts of the US,” he said.

safeguards that, if obtained and followed correctly, can prevent potentially deadly situations. For instance, installing a water heater without the proper permit could lead to dangerous gas leaks.

3. Know When to Obtain a Permit: Not all home improvements require permits. For instance, replacing windows without altering structural elements typically doesn’t need one. Understanding these nuances can save you time and money while ensuring compliance with local regulations.

4. Get Proper Approval: Insurance companies will require that the work done on your home is inspected and approved. For example, if you install a wood stove without proper inspection and it causes a fire, your insurance may deny the claim. So, always ensure that any home repairs or installations are permitted and inspected to avoid financial loss.

5. Verify Contractor Credentials: Before hiring a contractor, verify their credentials. Doing your due diligence helps ensure you hire a reliable professional and avoid future problems.

6. Be Prepared: DIY home improvement projects can be rewarding, but they require thorough preparation. Without the right knowledge and tools, you might end up causing more harm than good. To ensure the safety and quality of a project, it’s often best to leave complex projects to professionals. However, if you do choose to DIY, consider working with your local building department to ensure you meet building safety codes and standards.

7. Consider Future Homeowners: Think long term. While future buyers may have different needs, ensuring that your home improve-

ments meet current building codes will make the property more appealing and valuable.

8. Prevent Heating Health Hazards: Carbon monoxide poisoning is a serious risk with improper home heating. For instance, a homeowner using a wood stove without proper ventilation may experience dangerous carbon monoxide levels. Installing carbon monoxide detectors and ensuring proper ventilation are critical.

9. Be Radon Aware: Radon, a naturally occurring gas, can be more dangerous than many homeowners realize. Historic homes, in particular, may have elevated levels. Installing a radon detector, similar to a smoke detector, can help monitor and mitigate this risk, protecting your family from potential cancer-causing exposure.

10. Protect Your Water Supply: Proper water supply maintenance is crucial. Implementing backflow prevention for irrigation systems and ensuring downspouts are correctly installed can prevent water damage and contamination, protecting your home and its occupants.

11. Perform Maintenance Checks: Regular inspections of home utilities can prevent significant issues. Checking for leaks and rust and ensuring efficient operation can extend the lifespan of appliances and prevent unexpected breakdowns.

12. Separate Garage Living Spaces: Converting a garage into a living space requires planning. Proper separation of fire-rated materials is necessary to prevent potential fire hazards and ensure compliance with safety codes, especially if the garage still stores vehicles or equipment.

13. Know Your Home’s Utilities: Understanding your home’s utility systems is essential for effective management and safety. For example, knowing whether your home has a gas line and how to shut it off can prevent dangerous situations during home repairs or emergencies.

Building safety is a shared responsibility between professionals and homeowners. By staying informed and proactive, you can ensure your home remains valuable, functional and safe.

Take steps to ensure your home’s safety. Visit the Code Council’s website at iccsafe. org for more tips and resources. (StatePoint)

Getting Kids Engaged In Building Safety

The future of building safety offers exciting career opportunities for the next generation. The International Code Council encourages educators to involve kids in discussions about the industry from an early age, fostering open-mindedness and offering them a new perspective on the world around them.

Inspiring Young Minds with Interactive Learning

Building safety awareness can start at an early age if implemented in a fun, productive way that captures children’s interest. Parents and teachers can turn to interactive tools such as LEGO blocks and stickers to make the concept more approachable, accessible and engaging for young minds. The Code Council creates materials specifically for this purpose during Building Safety Month, an annual campaign that highlights the crucial role modern building codes and standards play in ensuring public safety, including Junior Building Inspector stickers and hard hats.

Linking these tools to other educational materials can help bridge the gap between the activity and understanding building safety. Incorporating stories that relate to the children’s daily lives can simplify complex concepts, while using props and visual aids, like themed toys, can heighten engagement and

enrich the experience. The Code Council effectively employs this approach through its mascot, CODiE the Cheetah.

That’s why Pete Roque, director of code enforcement at 4LEAF, wrote the children’s

book “Code Enforcement Officer Lucas Cleans Up Our Street” with his son. The book introduces young readers to code enforcement while providing insights into how blight and substandard structures are dealt with daily.

Rachel Patterson, senior code enforcement officer for the City of Westminster, Colorado and secretary of the Code Council Colorado chapter, leverages Roque’s book as part of her curriculum, combining it with squishy building safety toys. “By using visuals, you can communicate with the kiddos in a way they can appreciate.”

Patterson aims to tell more building safety stories through her animated series, “Fiona the Fox,” which she developed with Roque. The series aims to inspire kids to understand and appreciate building safety and to consider what it means to be a good neighbor.

Building Safety Education Resources

As children grow, the approach to building safety education should develop with them. The Code Council has developed numerous programs to educate kids of all ages. The Technical Training Program offers high school students and aspiring young professionals an early start and a competitive edge in the field. Additionally, the “I Built This”

series and Safety 2.0 programs offer high school outreach and training resources, respectively. For younger students, the Code Council’s Building Safety Month Kids Corner provides interactive resources, including an activity book. Completing these exercises earns kids a certificate as a Junior Code Official.

For older kids and teens interested in building safety and construction careers, there are hands-on programs to explore. The ACE Mentor Program of America connects high school students with design and construction industry experts. “The students actually get exposed to every aspect of the construction and building safety industry,” says Diana T. Eidenshink, president of the program. “Part of their exposure is learning about fire protection, the sprinkler systems, and ensuring there are emergency exit protections.”

By making building safety education interactive, relatable and age-appropriate, future leaders can be inspired to uphold and advance the standards that protect us all.

Don’t Toss Those Old Sneakers. Do This Instead

What if there was a way to reduce waste, create economic opportunities and improve global health?

Thanks to social enterprise Sneaker Impact, and its partners like Rack Room Shoes, now there is. Here’s how it works:

Anyone can recycle their gently used sneakers at any Rack Room Shoes location by simply dropping them into the collection boxes found in each store. The sneakers are then shipped to Sneaker Impact’s headquarters in Miami, Florida, where they are sorted for distribution.

• International Distribution: Usable sneakers are shipped to small businesses in developing countries. Local merchants revive and resell the sneakers, providing affordable footwear to children and adults in those communities. This initiative empowers local businesses and promotes sustainability by keeping sneakers out of landfills.

• Shoe Recycling: Sneakers that are not suit-

able for international distribution are delivered to a recycling facility in Florida. There, they are converted into energy that benefits Broward County and surrounding areas. Moreover, Sneaker Impact has been working on finding an alternative, circular economy solution for all footwear deemed end of life.

Since its inception, Rack Room Shoes has collected an average of nearly 600 pairs of usable sneakers each month. The retailer aims to raise awareness about the program and increase sneaker collections to create a lasting social and environmental impact.

In addition to the partnership with Rack Room Shoes, Sneaker Impact donates $1,000 per month to Shoes That Fit, a national nonprofit organization that provides shoes to students in need in an effort to help them focus on their studies.

Visit your local Rack Room Shoes store to find a recycling co-branded box and aid in reducing waste and supporting communities. To learn more about Rack Room Shoes Gives sustainability efforts visit https://www.rackroomshoes. com/responsibility/gives.

Whether you have kids with rapidly growing feet, or you walk and run often, you likely go through lots of pairs of sneakers. Thankfully, now there’s a great alternative to tossing them that benefits both people and the planet. (StatePoint)

Improve Your Backyard, Deck Or Patio By Hanging String Lights

Outdoor lighting can extend the time you can spend enjoying your backyard with your friends and family. While there are a host of involved and expensive outdoor lighting solutions, there’s one easy DIY alternative that offers a lot of charm.

“String lights are a beautiful, inexpensive and fun way to add personality and ambience to your yard and patio,” says expert landscape designer, Doug Scott.

In a recent Exmark Done-In-AWeekend Projects video, Scott demonstrates how to hang simple, cost-effective backyard lighting. With the best part of the summer still on tap, he is offering his steps for this two-day project for improving your outdoor living space:

1. Determine where you’ll hang your lights. You can hang them from fence posts, on trees, off porch railings, or even purchase light stakes that do the hard work for you.

2. Research the style of backyard lights that you want to use.

3. Sketch an outline or design of how you want the lights to look. You may want to crisscross the lights or string them just around the perimeter of the patio. Knowing your design will help you determine how many strands of lights you need. Just be sure your design represents you and how you want to live outside.

4. Determine what installation equipment you need. You may

need extra equipment such as an extension cord or hardware to hang the lights. Make sure that all hardware is weatherproof and outdoorgrade.

5. Measure the area where you’ll hang your lights, being sure to leave room for slack and to reach the outlet.

6. When you begin hanging the lights, try to have the light strand connections be as discrete as possible.

7. Install light hooks.

8. Hang outdoor string lights. To avoid breakage, remove all of the bulbs from the light strings before hanging them. Once the strings are hung, install one bulb in each

Survey Finds Renters Turn To DIY

Decor To Give A Their Spaces

Style

While it’s normal to feel nervous about moving into your first apartment, it’s also an exciting time to create your own personal haven.

Most rentals have lease limitations on what tenants can and can’t do when it comes to painting and decorating, but there are still ways to infuse your own unique aesthetic into a space.

A new survey from Duck brand asked current and former renters about how they made their temporary spots feel like home.

The survey found that 70% of renters say it’s important for their living space to reflect their personal style and preferences.

Although most residents say they are satisfied with the aesthetic of their rentals, respondents still expressed frustration with neutral paint colors and the inability to use nails and screws on the walls. (Continued On Page 17)

Road Tripping This Summer? Keep These Tips In Mind

Whether you’re day tripping with family, taking a week-long vacation with pals, or doing a cross-country solo drive, summer road trips of all kinds can be long and exhausting. The good news? There are plenty of ways to improve the experience.

Great Snacks

Road trip snacks are non-negotiable! They make car rides of any length brighter and keep drivers and passengers happy and fueled for the miles ahead.

It’s best to have a mix of snack options that are easy to eat in the car or at roadside stops. Carrot sticks, pretzels and nuts make great savory choices. For an easy, on-thego, fruity and juicy snack, try Black Forest Gummy Bears and Gummy Worms.

Now juicier, Black Forest Gummy Bears and Gummy Worms are made in six delicious fruity flavors making them a great road trip snack.

Crafted with care, they are made with real fruit juice, as well as colors and flavors from real sources.

Before

Refreshing Breaks

Making great time shouldn’t come at the expense of you or your traveling companions’ comfort. Beyond typical bathroom breaks

and pit stops, consider visiting points of interest along the route.

Ideally, these detours shouldn’t add too much additional mileage to your odometer or time on the road, but instead, be designed to break up the trip in manageable chunks. From a natural landmark to a beautiful view, the experiences will emotionally and physically rejuvenate your party for the next leg of the journey.

Games and Music

Entertainment can help the miles pass more quickly. If you’re driving alone, prep a great playlist or download some audiobooks or podcasts in advance of the trip so you aren’t distracted by flipping through your device while driving. Try giving each hour of the

journey a different theme – such as songs of a specific genre or from a particular decade, or by letting passengers take turns being the DJ. You can also pass the time playing classic road trip games like “I Spy” and “Twenty Questions.”

Keep passengers in the backseat occupied, particularly little ones, by supplying them with portable versions of their favorite board games.

Sustainable Tweaks

It’s easy to reduce your impact on the environment on road trips, and doing so will make you and your travel companions feel better and more energized about your journey!

Try turning off the AC and feeling the fresh breeze from open windows to reduce your fuel use. When it comes to hydration, bring your own reusable water bottles and refill them at rest station water fountains.

You can also select snacks wisely. Black Forest Gummy Bears and Gummy Worms, for example, are now available in store drop-off recycle-ready packaging. Help protect the planet by participating in the Store Drop Off program, conveniently located at retail stores along your route.

With delicious snacks, and fun games and detours, a road trip doesn’t just have to be a means to an end, it can also be a relaxing and fun part of your vacation. (StatePoint)

Tips To Have A Safe And Healthy Summer

Summer is a great time to try new activities and get outdoors, but the season also brings with it unique risks, according to medical experts.

“Regardless of where you are in your fitness journey, the warm weather months offer opportunities to reevaluate your wellness goals for the remainder of the year. But as you and your family get active, it’s important to prepare. Understanding water safety and sun safety, and recognizing the signs of heatrelated conditions are all critical,” says Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, M.D., M.P.H, president of the American Medical Association (AMA).

To help you enjoy a safe and healthy summer, the AMA offers these tips:

1. Be smart about sunscreen.

When shopping, look for a broad spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF

30. Also, understand that no sunscreen is waterproof, and you’ll need to reapply it every couple of hours and after exposure to water or sweat.

2. Make sure your family is up-to-

date on their vaccines. Before summer travel or camp season, double check everyone’s vaccine status. If you have questions, speak with your physician and review trusted resources, including getvaccineanswers.org.

3. Prioritize water safety. Ensure everyone in your family achieves water competency skills. Teach children to ask permission before going near water, have them and inexperienced swimmers or boaters wear U.S. Coast Guardapproved life jackets, and, at the beach, always swim in lifeguarded areas.

4. Reduce your intake of processed foods and sugar-sweetened beverages, especially those with added sodium and sugar. Eat less red meat and processed meats, and add

Boost Military Morale With A T-Shirt This Summer

Often separated from loved ones while training or deployed to remote locations around the world, from South Korea to Germany to bases across the United States, service members and their families make sacrifices every day.

Campaign organizers say the purpose is to boost the morale of those in uniform by showing them they’re never forgotten, while helping connect civilians with the military community.

The campaign also raises critical funds for the USO, which focuses on strengthening the well-being of service members and their families.

Donations to the USO help support more than 250 centers around the world, a care package delivery program, global entertainment, military spouse and youth programming and more.

more plant-based foods to your diet, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, olive oil, nuts and seeds.

Also reduce your consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and drink more water instead. Drinking sugary beverages, even 100% fruit juices, is associated with a higher all-cause mortality risk, according to a study published in JAMA Network Open.

5. Take advantage of warmer weather and find ways to be physically active. Exercise is essential for your physical and mental health. Adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorousintensity activity each week.

6. While exercise is important, it’s essential to be smart about it. If exercising outside, avoid the early afternoon (noon to 3 p.m.) when it’s hottest. Drink water before, during and after physical activity, and wear light-colored, lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing. Be on the lookout for signs of heat exhaustion, including cool, moist, pale skin, heavy sweating, headache, nausea and dizziness. CDC’s Heat Risk Dashboard informs on how best to protect yourself when

temperatures can impact your health.

7. If consuming alcohol, do so in moderation as defined by the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans—up to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men, and only by adults of legal drinking age.

8. Know your blood pressure numbers. Visit ManageYourBP.org to better understand your numbers and take necessary steps to get high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, under control. Doing so will reduce your risk of heart attack or stroke.

9. Check your community’s outdoor air quality using the Air Quality Index. Smoke from wildfires and degraded air quality can irritate your eyes, nose, throat and lungs. Children, pregnant people and those with certain chronic conditions must be especially careful.

“If you have questions or concerns about summer-related health issues, now is a great time to talk to your physician,” says Dr. Ehrenfeld. (StatePoint)

Almost Two-Thirds Of Home Fires Are Due To Human Error. Here’s How To Prepare

The threat of a home fire is greater than most people think. In fact, 40% of people believe they are more likely to win the lottery or get struck by lightning than experience a home fire, yet residential fires are the most common disaster people face in the United States, according to the American Red Cross. Here’s how to help prevent fires, and how to prepare for the worst:

Be Informed: The National Fire Protection Association reports that 60% of home fires are due to human error. It’s important to realize that humans are flawed. We forget things, we mess up, and we’re often distracted. Accepting the fact that a house fire is a real possibility is an important step in the right direction.

There are simple actions you can take to help prevent accidents. For starters, cooking is the leading cause of house fires. Never leave cooking unattended. Keep the cooking area free of flammable items such as potholders, towels

and packaging, and always maintain a 3-foot safety zone free of pets and kids.

Update Your Smoke Detection Devices: While taking safety precautions is critical, having the latest fire safety technology can provide an extra layer of detection. Pioneers in the home safety field are providing new solutions that give homeowners more control over their safety, and like many technologies, today’s smoke and carbon

monoxide detectors have come a long way. In fact, the new Kidde Detect devices provide over 25% faster smoke detection (29% faster average smoke detection based on internal testing of smoldering wood fires for Kidde 9th Edition vs. leading competitor 8th Edition products) that’s three times more precise (in terms of consistency and range of obscuration rate, based on internal testing for Kidde 9th Edition vs. leading competitor 8th Edition products). This is a

critical improvement, as statistics show that people have less than 2 minutes to safely escape a house fire, so every second counts.

Tech expert Marc Saltzman explains, “This technology is revolutionary because it features enhanced sensing technology to reduce nuisance alarms.”

“Nuisance alarms,” also known as false alarms, refer to when smoke alarms beep but there is no threat of fire. They are often caused by cooking activities and lead many consumers to disconnect their devices out of frustration. Upgrading your safety devices to Kidde Detect Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors means your alarms are more likely to remain installed, so both you and your home can be as safe as possible.

All Kidde Detect devices include a self-testing feature that when combined with routine manual testing and maintenance, ensures the alarm is always operating as expected

(self-testing is not a substitute for a manual push test of the alarm), and the devices go above and beyond the latest UL 8th edition standards to meet 9th edition. Once you have your new detectors, be sure to install them on every level of your home, in hallways, and both inside and outside every sleeping area.

Be Prepared: A working smoke alarm can double the chance of escaping from a home fire safely, but that’s just the first line of defense. It’s also important to create a home fire escape plan. Kidde’s fire safety toolkit is a great resource to help families prepare for a fire emergency.

For more fire safety tips and information on how to upgrade your devices, visit Kidde.com.

While many people assume that a fire can’t happen to them, the truth is that everyone makes mistakes. Having the right life-saving tools can help protect you and your family. (StatePoint)

How The Brands You Shop With May Be Practicing Sustainable, Responsible Retail

As more consumers passionately embrace social causes, they’re looking to spend their dollars with brands committed to responsible, sustainable retail.

According to a Sensormatic Solutions U.S. Consumer Sustainability Survey, 70% of consumers would change their shopping habits after learning a brand isn’t operating sustainably.

Of Gen Z shoppers, over 60% prefer to buy from sustainable brands, and 73% are willing to pay more for sustainable products.

With shoppers of all ages prioritizing environmental, social and governance commitments when making purchasing decisions, retailers that want to maintain customer loyalty while also doing their part to protect the environment are shifting their practices to align with consumer sentiments.

According to Deloitte’s 2023 CXO

Sustainability Report, 73% of chief experience officers from the consumer industry have increased their investments in sustainability over the past year.

“Consumers have been very clear about the importance of sustainable retail practices to their purchasing decisions—and the tactics retailers use to heed the call often happen across their supply chain before a product even hits the sales

floor,” says Christa Anz, head of marketing at Sensormatic Solutions, a leading global retail solutions provider.

“Retailers are relying on emerging technologies to streamline their operations, to reduce waste, and to make sustainability part of their business models, from who they choose as vendors, to what materials they use, and how it’s shipped to store.”

If shopping sustainably is important to you, you can show retailers you value their commitment and learn more about the meaningful work they are doing in order to practice what they preach. Here are a few of the operational changes you might see, and others that may be happening behind the scenes:

• Reducing or eliminating plastic use in packaging, or using recyclable materials in packaging.

• Utilizing loss prevention options, like AM labels made from plasticfree and/or renewable materials to reduce environmental impact while protecting high-risk items.

• Refining inventory management programs to reduce waste.

• Implementing in-store technology with built-in power saving modes for less energy consumption.

• Leveraging connected, cloudbased technologies for remote servicing, which means less wheels on the ground.

• Expanding in-store recycling programs or resale services.

• Using eco-friendly fabrics, materials and manufacturers.

• Engaging in ethical labor practices.

To learn more about how new technologies are improving the way retailers do business, visit sensormatic.com.

“You can rest assured that while many aspects of the shopper experience might feel the same as before, retailers are actually listening to your desires and are integrating eco-friendly initiatives into their daily practices from the warehouse to the store.” (StatePoint)

Preserve Your Natural Teeth With These Tips

While having a tooth pulled may seem like the easiest option when you have tooth pain from an infection or disease, saving your natural teeth is best.

According to the American Association of Endodontists (AAE), a missing tooth can impact your quality of life and self-confidence, cause other teeth to shift, affect your ability to chew properly, and lead to more problems down the road — and a lot more cost.

Tooth extraction is often more painful than the infection itself, and replacing an extracted tooth with an artificial one requires additional dental visits that can quickly add up.

“Modern endodontics offers advancements in technologies, procedures and materials, giving you many treatment options to save your natural teeth. It’s important to understand your choices and how they’ll impact both your tooth and your future dental health,” says Dr. Natasha M. Flake, president of the

AAE.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of misconceptions about what to do when you are experiencing tooth pain or infection.

That’s why the AAE is offering these teeth-saving tips:

• While the phrase “I’d rather have a root canal” may be meant as a joke, it’s actually good advice.

When given a choice between tooth extraction and root canal treatment, always opt for a root canal.

Not only is root canal treatment from an endodontist virtually painless, no denture, bridge or implant will look, feel and function as well as a natural tooth.

In short, the beginning of a root canal procedure means the end of tooth pain.

• Act immediately when you experience symptoms of swelling or pain. Most endodontists can accommodate emergency cases, even on weekends, ensuring you’ll be seen quickly.

• If your dentist recommends tooth extraction, ask whether having a root canal is an option.

• If you’re told a

root canal is not an option, ask why and request a referral to an endodontist, or use the AAE’s Find My Endodontist search tool at findmyendodontist.com to find a practice near you. Endodontists are specialists in saving teeth. They can evaluate your condition and provide the best treatment plan to help you save your teeth for a lifetime.

“In a disposable era, some things are worth preserving. It’s always best to retain your natural teeth whenever possible and endodontic treatment, which helps you maintain your natural smile, continue eating the foods you love and limits the need for ongoing dental work, should be your first choice for the best health and cosmetic results,” says Dr. Flake. Himalayan Communities Staring At Water Shortage

NEW DELHI (News Agencies) – The Hindu Kush Himalaya region is facing a significant drop in snow persistence this year, raising serious concerns over water security for downstream communities, according to a new report.

The region heavily relies on the cryosphere—frozen water on Earth’s surface, including snow, permafrost, and ice from glaciers, lakes, and rivers. This frozen water is a crucial source of freshwater for around 240 million people living in the region and benefits approximately 1.65 billion people downstream.

Snowmelt contributes around 23 percent of the total water flow of 12 major river basins originating in the Hindu Kush Himalaya. However, its contribution varies by river, representing 74 percent of the Amu Darya’s flow, 77 percent of the Helmand’s flow, and 40 percent of the Indus’ flow.

Monitoring indicates that snow levels are nearly a fifth below normal across the region this year, with the most dramatic declines in the west, where its contribution to the water supply is the highest.

Snow persistence has dropped 17 percent below normal in the Ganga basin and 14.6 percent below normal in the Brahmaputra basin, according to the Snow Update Report – 2024, released on June 17 by Nepal’s International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD).

The Helmand River basin shows the most significant decline in snow persistence, at 31.8 percent below normal. Its previous lowest level was in 2018, with a 42 percent reduction.

The Indus basin has fallen to 23.3 percent below normal, the lowest level in 22 years. The previous lowest year for this basin was 2018, with a 9.4 percent shortfall. The Mekong basin had the smallest variation from normal, with snow persistence around 1 percent below normal.

To ensure long-term resilience to climate change, countries sharing transboundary rivers must collaborate to update their water management laws. Such actions are crucial to addressing water shortages in South Asia, which heavily relies on snowmelt, researchers said. (Courtesy: https:// indiawest.com/)

5 Tips For New Pet Owners

Welcoming a new pet is exciting, but preparation is needed to provide a loving home and enjoy the unconditional love.

Prepare your furry friend for a new home with these essential tips for first-time pet owners.

Choose the Right Pet for Your Lifestyle

Consider your living situation, work schedule and personal preferences. Research different breeds to find the one that matches your activity level, living space and family dynamics. Also consider any allergies or sensitivities you or your family may have as some pets may trigger allergies or asthma symptoms.

Set Up Your Home

Before bringing your new pet home, create a safe and comfortable environment. Start by petproofing your home, removing any hazardous substances and securing loose wires or cords. Make sure to store cleaning supplies, medications and toxic plants out of reach. Provide a designated space that includes a cozy bed or crate, food and water bowls and toys.

Create a Routine

Establish a consistent schedule for feeding, exercise and bathroom breaks. Determine the ap-

propriate amount and frequency of meals for your pet’s age, size and breed. Spend quality time with your pet daily, providing attention, affection and mental stimulation.

Budget for Your Pet’s Needs Owning a pet comes with financial responsibilities. Consider the costs of food, grooming, veterinary care, vaccinations and

preventive medications. Additionally, factor in the cost of toys, bedding, litter and other supplies.

Find a Reliable Veterinarian

Regular check-ups and open communication with a local veterinarian can help detect any potential health issues early and ensure your pet receives the best possible care.

Ask friends, family or neighbors with pets for provider recommendations and read reviews. Visit potential veterinarians’ offices to meet the staffs, tour the facilities and ask any questions you may have.

Make Summer Travel With Pets Enjoyable And Seamless

For pet owners, cats and dogs are part of the family, which means when it’s time to head out of town this summer, the four-legged friends get to come along, too.

In fact, a survey conducted by Motel 6 revealed that of 2,000 Americans with summer leisure plans, the vast majority of those traveling with pets this summer (90%) are bringing their dog, and more than a quarter (31%) are bringing their cat.

While traveling with pets can be a handful, Motel 6 and its Chief Pet Officer, Garfield, fresh off his wild adventure in “The Garfield Movie,” offer these tips to help make the journey easier, safer and more fun.

Pack the Essentials: Travel anxiety is real for your four-legged friends, too, so keep the experience as “pawsitive” as possible by packing your pet’s favorite toys and snacks. Don’t forget to pack enough food, like lasagna; water; collapsible food and water bowls; and a favorite blanket or bed to provide a sense of familiarity.

Map Out Stops: One in 6 (16%) Americans with summer travel plans are driving to their

destinations because they plan to bring their pets along. Travelers should map out breaks, especially when it comes to stopping for meals, in anticipation of traffic and construction. This can help ensure they find spots for bathroom breaks and a chance for active pets to exercise. Even lazier pets can enjoy the fresh air.

Find Pet-Friendly Lodging: As you plan your getaway, look for pet-friendly lodging options with plenty of places to lounge, like Motel 6, which offers travelers and their four-legged

friends affordable accommodation, and pets always stay free. This helps take the stress out of researching hotel pet policies and paying additional fees.

Traveling pet parents can join the free My6 discount program to receive a minimum of 6% off every stay at locations across the country and access to hundreds of pet and travel benefits.

Travel Safely: If you’re planning to travel with your pets, ensure they receive the royal treatment by researching how to safely transport them during the trip. The Humane Society of the United States recommends that cats and dogs travel in their crates or carriers anchored by a seatbelt to prevent them from moving around the car. It’s important to never leave your pet alone in the car or place your pet in the front seat because it

could lead to injury. Always keep pets on leashes when outside, no matter how welltrained they are, as new surroundings or unexpected noises can startle them.

Remember to Have Fun: Travelers’ top reasons for bringing their four-legged friends on trips include spending quality time with them and the joy of seeing their pets happy (39%), making new memories with their pets (34%), seeing their pets’ reactions to new experiences (32%) and the extra level of companionship pets bring to trips (29%). A few ways to reserve quality time with your pets include dining at pet-friendly restaurants (preferably ones with unlimited cheese), locating nearby green spaces or parks to play, trying new experiences together or going on walks. For those who like a more leisurely travel experience, don’t forget to add a quick cat nap with your pet to your schedule.

As you look to map out your summer travel plans, visit Motel6.com to find petfriendly, affordable lodging.

6 Tips For Planning Your Next Road Trip

Warmer weather provides a perfect opportunity to hop behind the wheel of your car and explore breathtaking scenery, cultural experiences and adventures waiting to be discovered both near and far.

To ensure a smooth and memorable journey, consider these planning tips before departing on your road trip adventure.

Set Your Destination

When planning a road trip, the first step is to decide your destination. Consider factors such as the distance you are willing to travel, time available for your trip and attractions or landmarks you want to visit along the way. Also factor in weather conditions and seasonality of your destination as some places may be more enjoyable to visit during certain times of year. Keep in mind any special events or festivals happening you might want to attend.

Determine a Budget

Determine how much you are willing to spend on gas, food, lodging and entertainment. This can help you make informed decisions and avoid overspending. For example, when budgeting for food, plan for a mix of dining out and cooking your own meals. Pack a cooler with snacks and drinks for the road and make use of local grocery stores or farmers markets to buy fresh ingredients.

Plan Your Route

Take some time to map out your journey using online tools or GPS devices, considering the most scenic and interesting routes available. Consider the duration of your trip and how many stops you want to make along the way, finding a balance between driving time and time spent exploring attractions or enjoying the scenery. Also identify any must-see landmarks along your route.

Research Accommodations

Research different accommodation

options along your route, such as hotels, motels, campgrounds and vacation rentals. Compare prices, read reviews and consider factors like location, amenities and safety. To save money on accommodations, consider alternatives like camping or staying with friends or family.

Pack the Essentials

Packing for a road trip can be a challenge, but with the right essentials, you can ensure a comfortable and enjoyable journey. Start by making a list of the items you may need during the trip, including clothing, toiletries and any special equipment or gear. Don’t forget essentials like comfortable shoes, swimwear and a jacket or sweater.

Other important items to pack include a first aid kit, snacks and drinks for the road, phone chargers and entertainment options such as books, music or games. It’s also a good idea to pack basic tools and

emergency supplies, such as a flashlight, jumper cables, spare tire and a roadside emergency kit.

Take Appropriate Safety Precautions

While road trips are exciting adventures, it’s important to prioritize safety to ensure a smooth and memorable journey. Before hitting the road, share your itinerary with someone you trust and make sure your vehicle is in good condition. Check the tires, brakes, fluids and lights to minimize the risk of breakdowns or accidents. Also plan regular rest stops to avoid driver fatigue and stay updated on weather conditions and road closures along your route.

5 Ways to Be Environmentally Conscious at Home

Being environmentally conscious doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. In fact, by making simple changes to your daily routine, you can make a positive impact on the planet while also saving money and living a more sustainable lifestyle.

Consider these practical ways to reduce your carbon footprint and protect the planet for future generations right from the comforts of your own home.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: This classic mantra is still relevant today. By reducing the amount of waste you produce, reusing items whenever possible and recycling materials like paper, plastic and glass, you can help minimize the amount of trash that ends up in landfills and oceans.

Composting food scraps and avoiding single-use plastic items like water bottles and shopping bags can also help reduce your impact on the environment.

Conserve Energy: One of the biggest contributors to climate change

is the burning of fossil fuels for energy. Simple steps like turning off lights when you leave a room, unplugging electronics when they’re not in use, adjusting your thermostat to save on heating and cooling costs and using energy-efficient lightbulbs and appliances can help reduce your carbon footprint and

save you money in the long run.

Save Water: Water is a precious resource, and it’s important to use it wisely. Simple actions like fixing leaky faucets, taking shorter showers, using the dishwasher or washing machine only when full and watering your garden in the

early morning or late evening can help conserve water and protect the water supply. You can also install low-flow showerheads and toilets

to further reduce water usage. Choose Sustainable Products: When shopping for household items, look for products made from sustainable materials that are biodegradable or recyclable. Choosing products with minimal packaging or opting for eco-friendly alternatives can help reduce waste.

Grow Your Own Food: If you have the space, consider starting a small garden at home. Growing your own fruits, vegetables and herbs allows you to enjoy fresh, organic produce while also reducing the carbon footprint of your food by cutting out the transportation and packaging involved in storebought produce.

Indulge Taste Buds With Better-For-You Snacks

(Family Features) The foundation of healthy eating may include nutritious breakfasts, lunches and dinners, but just as important are the snacks in-between meals. Regardless of when or where you snack, encourage better-for-you eating habits with nutritious nibbles to power through your day.

According to an online survey conducted among 1,000 Americans ages 18 and older across the U.S. by Wakefield Research on behalf of the American Pecan Promotion Board, Americans love snacks, and reach for them an average of three times a day.

However, where and when those snacks are eaten can vary from on the move to on the couch, from sunrise to after bedtime. Nearly a third (30%) of respondents are munching on snacks while in bed, calling it their favorite snack-

ing spot. However, only 35% of their snack choices are considered healthy.

Fueling busy days can be easy with an option like pecans. According to the survey, 66% of snackers enjoy pecans on their own with 58% eat-

ing them as part of a trail mix. If you’re among the 50% who reach for a snack in the late afternoon, you can turn to nutritious, satisfying solutions to indulge afternoon cravings without the guilt. With pleasing crunch, comforting creaminess and a satisfying chew,

5 Ways To Set Up A Safe, Cozy Home For Cats And Dogs

As much as you love your pets and work hard to make them part of the family, they’re also a big responsibility.

Part of that responsibility includes setting up your home so it’s equal parts stylish (for you) and functional (for Fido).

Show furry friends a little love, beyond the walks and snuggles, by making your home more pet friendly.

Set Up Their Space Near an Entry

It’s common for pet owners to desire a space to keep all their furry friends’ belongings and avoid clutter.

Ensure convenience and cleanliness by establishing an area near the door where you can store leashes, collars, toys and more. Consider keeping a towel or two nearby for wiping paws (and snouts) after going outside.

You can also keep your pets’ beds, food and water bowls in this space so it feels like their own little “home” when returning from a

walk or going to sleep at night.

Consider Stain-Resistant Fabrics

From furniture to decor, avoiding fabrics that attract pet hair is a nobrainer for pet owners looking to escape a constant mess.

Silk and velvet are virtual magnets for fur, while alternatives like leather offer more practical choices that are easy to clean and durable.

Install Resilient Flooring

Reduce your fear of zoomies causing damage to your floors by installing resilient flooring focused on reducing wear.

Both durable and beautiful, a variety of Beautifully Responsible floors take on some of the burden of pet ownership with built-in durability for the everyday and the unexpected.

With options designed to bridge the gap between style and function, numerous water-resistant and waterproof floors give you and your pets room to live your best lives for years to come without wet shakes

Plus, many resilient floors don’t flinch when it comes to addressing muddy paws, often only requiring the mud to be easily wiped away, without harsh cleaning products.

Decorate with Pets in Mind

Displaying Grandma’s fine China and your favorite sports memorabilia may not go hand-in-hand with pet ownership - that autographed baseball may look more like a chew toy than a treasured artifact.

Instead, prioritize decor that’s washable and sturdy so you can avoid coming home to a delicate family heirloom shattered on the floor.

Pet-Proof the Yard

If you plan on your pets being outside on their own, it’s a good idea to carefully inspect your outdoor spaces before letting them roam.

Or you can simply toss warm pecans with olive oil and sea salt in this Roasted Pecans recipe for a grab-and-go snack that can be prepared in advance without worrying about spoiling. Another benefit of pecans: They can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 9 months or frozen up to 2 years, giving them a longer shelf life than many pantry favorites. Plus, they can be thawed and refrozen without losing flavor or texture.

What Every Student-Athlete Should Know

You may find it difficult to wrap your mind around the idea of an energetic student-athlete with a cardiac diagnosis. Heart conditions may be more often associated with older individuals, but you might be surprised to learn hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most common condition responsible for sudden cardiac death in young athletes. In fact, it’s the cause of 40% of sudden cardiac death cases.

It’s estimated 1 in every 500 adults living in the United States has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, according to the American Heart Association, but a significant percentage are undiagnosed. More than 80% of individuals who experience this condition show no signs or symptoms before sudden cardiac death. While sudden cardiac death is rare, it can occur during exercise or in its aftermath. That’s why it’s important for student-athletes and their loved ones to learn more about this condition and talk to a doctor about their risk. With proper knowledge and the support of a skilled care team, it’s possible to manage hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with heart-healthy

actions to prevent complications or worsening cardiovascular conditions like atrial fibrillation (a quivering or irregular heartbeat), stroke or heart failure. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy awareness and education for athletes by the American Heart Association is made possible in part by a grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation.

What is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most common form of inherited heart disease and can affect people of any age. It’s defined by thick-

ening and stiffening of the walls of the heart. The heart’s chambers cannot fill up or pump blood out adequately, so the heart is unable to function normally.

There are different types of this condition. Most people have a form of the disease in which the wall that separates the two bottom chambers of the heart (the septum) becomes enlarged and restricts blood flow out of the heart (obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy).

However, sometimes hypertrophic cardiomyopathy occurs without

significant blocking of blood flow (nonobstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy). The heart’s main pumping chamber is still thickened and may become increasingly stiff, reducing the amount of blood taken in then pumped out to the body with each heartbeat.

What are possible symptoms?

Symptoms can include:

* shortness of breath

* chest pain

* heart palpitations

* fatigue

The severity of symptoms can vary, but if you experience them or if you have a family history of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or sudden cardiac death, it may be a good idea to speak to your doctor about whether you have this condition.

For some people, symptoms can get worse and new symptoms can appear over time, resulting in people dealing with harsher effects and a diminished ability to do the activities they love. This decrease in functions can be one of the most challenging aspects of the disease. Keeping your health care

team aware of any new or changing symptoms allows them to work with you to develop a plan to manage these symptoms and reduce their impact.

How is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy diagnosed?

Medical history, family history, a physical exam and diagnostic test results all factor into a diagnosis. A common diagnostic test is an echocardiogram that assesses the thickness of the heart muscle and observes blood flow from the heart.

If anyone in your family has been diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, other heart diseases or has been told they had thick heart walls, you should share that information with your doctor and discuss the need for genetic testing. Because this condition is hereditary, first-degree relatives, which include siblings and parents, should be checked.

5 Tips For Traveling With Health Conditions

From staycations and road trips to Caribbean getaways and coastal cruises, summertime offers the chance to escape and unwind with a much needed (and deserved) vacation. However, for people living with health conditions like heart disease or stroke, leaving home can pose special challenges.

As travel season takes shape, the experts at the American Heart Association - celebrating 100 years of lifesaving service as the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for allrecommends a few important tips to ease on-the-go woes.

“As we look forward to summer, many people will be traveling to spend treasured time with family and friends, or maybe just to enjoy some relaxation on the beach,” said Gladys Velarde, M.D., FAHA, professor of medicine and national volunteer with the American Heart Association. “It’s not always that simple for people who have chronic health conditions that require multiple medications or special medical equipment. There are also considerations for how to maintain your health and not put yourself at increased risk.”

Velarde said that doesn’t mean travel is off limits if you have a chronic health condition. A little planning and preparation can reduce stress and prepare you for your

next big adventure.

Check In with Your Health Care Provider

Speak with your primary care physician or specialist about your travel plans and any special considerations related to your health. He or she can offer guidance on any restrictions or precautions you should keep in mind. Carry a list of all medications, including dosages and pharmacy information. Also consider carrying a copy of key medical records and a list of phone numbers, including your doctors and emergency contacts.

Manage Your Medications

Ensure medications are clearly labeled and that you’ve packed enough to last the entire trip. If you’re traveling across time zones,

enlist your health care provider to help adjust medication schedules. Some medications require refrigeration; research how to pack them appropriately for airport security and make sure you’ll have a refrigerator in your lodging.

Plan for Transportation

Whether you’re traveling by plane, bus, train, cruise ship or other means, it’s paramount to plan ahead for special medical equipment. For example, if you use a wheelchair, walker or other assistance for getting around, you may need to check in with the travel company to find out how to properly transport your devices.

Master the Airport

During this especially busy travel season, planning ahead can make the airport experience easier. If you have a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, you

may need to go through a special security screening. Walking through a crowded terminal can take its toll, so consider requesting a wheelchair or courtesy cart to get to your gate when booking your ticket.

Long flights may increase your risk for blood clots, including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Consider wearing compression socks and walk around the cabin while it’s safe and allowed to help improve your circulation.

Know the Signs

While it’s always important to know the signs of heart attack, stroke or cardiac arrest, it’s particularly critical while away from home. If you or someone you’re with experience symptoms, call 911. Many airports even offer kiosks where you can learn Hands-Only CPR while waiting for your flight.

“Every individual’s condition is unique, and you’ll want to tailor your travel plans to your specific needs,” Velarde said. “By taking a little time now to plan and prepare, your vacation can be just what the doctor ordered to help you unwind and recharge.”

7 Ways To Reduce Energy Bills During Summer Heat

With temperatures forecasted to run at least 2 degrees higher than historical averages across more than half the country, according to projections from AccuWeather, heat waves may lead to soaring airconditioning bills this summer.

“The summer is when we see homeowners strategizing about how to keep their homes cool and comfortable while sticking to their household budgets,” said Michael Williford, HVAC service manager at Hiller Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Electrical. “We work with customers to keep their current HVAC systems running smoothly or upgrade to more efficient systems, which can make a huge difference in their utility bills. In addition, there are many other ways homeowners can keep their energy costs down during the hot summer months.”

Consider these smart, practical, cost-cutting tips for dialing down your energy bills.

Service HVAC Systems Regularly

To ensure the best cooling performance and efficiency possible, find a licensed contractor to keep your heating and cooling system wellmaintained and serviced throughout the year. There are some tasks many homeowners can handle on their own, like keeping outdoor units free of debris and changing air filters. However, bringing in a professional 1-2 times a year for maintenance and to ensure proper function of ductwork and electrical components is also essential.

Use Appliances During Non-Peak Hours

Rather than using stoves, ovens and clothing dryers in the afternoon hours, consider doing so early in the morning or late in the evening. Peak time for many electricity providers is noon-6 p.m., meaning using appliances that heat up your home outside of this timeframe when conventional heating and cooling systems are likely running full throttle can help lower energy costs.

gy-Saving Heat Pump

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) incentivizes homeowners who opt for energy-efficient HVAC upgrades, including qualified heat pumps, which can boost seasonal energy efficiency ratios and increase efficiencies. For example, Mitsubishi Electric heat pumps provide more energy-efficient cooling that may equal cost and energy savings as well as a reduced carbon footprint for homeowners. These systems are equipped with inverter or variable-speed technology that allows systems to automatically ramp up or down the required amount of energy depending on the room’s capacity. Although annual savings vary, some homeowners can save as much as $1,000 per year by switching to an all-electric heat pump.

Fire Up the Grill

When temperatures soar, use the grill for cooking to help lower energy usage and save on air-conditioning costs. Alternatively, toaster ovens, air fryers and slow cookers use less energy than larger conventional stoves or ovens. Get creative by cooking a pizza in a chiminea or smoking favorite meats as alternatives to using your oven.

Stop Cooling Empty Rooms

One mistake many homeowners make is forgetting to adjust their temperature settings when leaving the house. Whether you’re headed to the beach for the weekend or just headed to work for the day, blasting the air conditioner in an empty

house can result in unnecessarily high utility bills. Multi-zone, allelectric heat pumps like those from Mitsubishi Electric allow homeowners to set the comfort level and adjust the temperature in each room, so you don’t have to waste energy cooling unoccupied rooms. With a smartphone app, you can

Install a Smart Electric Panel

Installing a smart electrical panel alongside an all-electric heat pump enables homeowners to monitor and control energy consumption on-site or remotely using a smartphone for better overall efficiency

and utility cost savings.

Harness the Sun’s Energy with Solar Panels

According to the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, the amount of sunlight that strikes the Earth’s surface in 90 minutes could power the world’s total energy usage for a full year. Investing in solar panels can help decrease energy bills and increase your home’s sustainability. Additionally, some utility providers and government entities, including the IRA, offer incentives to help reduce installation costs. Plus, solarsourced power pairs well with allclimate heat pumps, which require minimal electricity to operate.

4 Tips For Summer Water Safety

Drowning is a leading cause of death for children ages 1-4, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. During the summer months, when water activities are more prevalent, drowning is more common, according to the National Safety Council.

Extreme heat may increase incidents of cardiac arrest and an average of 33 drownings occur in the U.S. each day, one-third of which are fatal.

To protect your loved ones when playing in and around water this summer, keep these tips from the American Heart Association in mind:

Never swim alone. Children always need supervision, but even adults should swim with a buddy so someone can call for help if an unexpected problem arises. Swimmers can get cramps that hinder movement in the water and slips and falls can happen to anyone.

Wear protective devices. U.S. Coast-Guard-approved life jackets provide the best protection for someone who is in the water and unable to safely reach solid footing.

When on a boat, all passengers should wear life jackets in case of an accident, and young and inexperienced swimmers should wear one any time they’re near water.

Choose your swimming location wisely. Avoid unknown bodies of water where hazards such as tree limbs or rocks may be hidden below the surface.

Also avoid waterways with strong currents, such as rivers, that can easily carry even the strongest swimmers away. Instead, choose swimming pools and locations with trained lifeguards on duty.

Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). In the event of a drowning, no matter the age, the American Heart Association recommends rescue breaths along with chest compressions to keep oxygen circulating to the brain. Only 39% of those who partici-

pated in a consumer survey said they are familiar with conventional CPR and only 23% know about Hands-Only CPR.

Trump Floats Idea Of Green Cards For Students; Campaign Rolls It Back

(Continued From Page 01) Students from India, which is the second largest source country for foreign students, stand to be the largest beneficiaries if Trump is indeed re-elected and delivers on his promise. Together with students from China, which is the top source country, they account for 53 percent of all foreign students enrolled in 2023.

But the big question is if he will indeed deliver on this promise. When in office from 2017 to 2021, his administration had tried to restrict the intake of immigrants and targeted Indians coming to the US on H-1B short-term non-immigrant work visas. Before taking office, he had supported the H-1B program.

The Trump campaign has already rolled back the former President’s comments, saying shortly after that the program will use an “aggressive vetting process” to keep out “all communists, radical Islamists, Hamas supporters, America hat-

ers and public charges (poor foreigners who are unable to fend for themselves and need government)”. Trump’s remarks came in a podcast with two Silicon Valley investors on June 20. When asked to promise he will bring the best and the brightest from around the world to America, he said: “I do promise, but I happen to agree.”

“What I will do is – you graduate from a college, I think you should get automatically, as part of your diploma, a Green Card to be able to stay in this country, and that includes junior colleges.”

A Green Card allows the holder to stay and work in the US permanently – Perma-

Discussions about cricket’s history, strategies, and global impact are regular features of their gatherings, enriching their university experience and broadening their perspectives.

Looking ahead, Bilal and Faraz are excited about the future of the Texas Cricket Club. With the support of their sponsors and the dedication of their members, they envision continued growth and success. Their journey has been characterized by passion, resilience, and the belief that cricket can bridge cultural divides and bring people together.

Facts About OCD Everyone Should Know

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is widely misunderstood. Characterized by overwhelming, obsessive thoughts and compulsions, diagnosis of this disorder can take years, if properly diagnosed at all.

Beyond the depictions in pop culture of someone avoiding shaking someone’s hand, knocking a certain number of times, or being a general “germaphobe,” OCD is a disorder that can show up in dozens of ways and often has grave implications for someone’s life and well-being.

Whether you’re living with OCD or supporting someone with the condition, click on for some important facts about OCD you should know.

People who have OCD experience recurring, unwanted thoughts, ideas, or obsessions that make them feel driven to do something repetitively.

Obsessions are persistent thoughts,

urges, or impulses that people try, but often fail, to suppress. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or thoughts that people with OCD feel compelled to perform.

If they don’t carry them out, they can experience overwhelming feelings of anxiety and fear.

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) estimates that 1.2% of adults in the US have OCD.

Chances are that you know someone with OCD. People with OCD often feel ashamed of their obsessive thoughts and behaviors, and may struggle try to hide their compulsive behavior.

Some people seem to think OCD is a personality trait, like being a clean freak or organization junkie.

They may treat OCD as a funny quirk when, actually, there’s nothing funny about it. In reality, it’s anguish for the affected person.

People with OCD may have compulsive thoughts, but they don’t

lose touch with reality, such as people with schizophrenia.

OCD is characterized by obsessions and compulsions, but the way symptoms manifest vary from person to person.

If you have OCD, you may also have a tic disorder and experience repeated motor movements like blinking or facial tics.

People with OCD have widely varying obsessions. Some people are averse to germs and bodily fluids, so they may feel compelled to wash their hands or bathe excessively.

Others ruminate about losing control, harming other people, or contracting a disease. And some obsessions relate to perfectionism.

People with OCD feel compelled to repeat certain thoughts or behaviors to counteract their obsessions, such as frequent handwashing.

According to the NIMH, OCD is diagnosed in most people by age 19, typically with an earlier age of onset in boys than in girls.

While OCD can affect very young children as well, one has to be careful against jumping to conclusions.

Kids can have a lot of ritualistic behaviors and routines that don’t necessarily mean they have OCD.

In a 2012 study, researchers identified three traumatic events that were associated with an outbreak of OCD symptoms, especially in women.

Those traumatic events included: hospitalization of a family member, major personal physical illness, and loss of a personally valuable object. However, less severe life events can also bring on flare-ups.

Some people develop rituals that involve repeatedly tapping their fingers, repeating tasks in threes, and checking, and rechecking on things.

People with OCD often feel embarrassed about what they’re doing, and so they tend to hide their symptoms from their families, friends, and co-workers.

While scientists don’t know for sure why some people develop OCD, they think your genes likely play a role.

While no single gene has been identified, researchers know there is a genetic link from studies of twins, which showed when one twin has OCD the other is more likely to develop the condition.

OCD can occur along with anxiety, depression, and body dysmorphic disorder, a disorder in which someone mistakenly believes that a part of their body is abnormal.

According to the NIMH, about two-thirds of people with OCD will have at least one episode of major depression. (Courtesy: https://www.msn.com/)

People with OCD are quite good at keeping their condition a secret. In fact, the International OCD Foundation says it can take 14 to 17 years from the onset of symptoms for people with OCD to get appropriate treatment.

Why Parents Believe Teens’ Financial Literacy Isn’t Their Responsibility

Given our experiences with money, the mistakes we’ve made and what we wish we knew about money when we were younger, how is it that we parents aren’t up in arms?

How come we aren’t calling for decisive action to fix what we must know is a ticking time bomb? Why are we content to sit on the sidelines and wait for this to play out?

Especially when we know deep down that there isn’t any good way this can turn out. There are three reasons.

1. It’s in our blind spot

As parents, we have a number of blind spots when it comes to our teenagers, and their lack of knowhow when it comes to money has to be one of the biggest.

We either don’t perceive it to be a problem, or if we do, we make

light of it or proceed to brush it off as a phase that our teens will grow out of. We assume they will figure it out on their own.

We consider making money mistakes almost a rite of passage, something that can’t be helped, but because we don’t recognise it as a problem, we can’t begin to solve it. We remain passive even in the face of impending doom.

There is another related issue here, a psychological phenomenon called “inattentional blindness” where we fail to notice something because we are so focused on another task.

Children Deserve Quality Care

PCRF

Children Deserve Quality Care Ad

As a result of our singular focus, we miss out on important information that isn’t related to that task.

As parents of teenagers, we are so focused on their test scores and college entrance exams, we easily fall prey to this.

We don’t notice their lack of understanding of money and how it works. And again, we can’t solve what we can’t see.

2. We pass on responsibility We don’t take action to financially educate and empower our teens because we think this should be handled by schools and colleges.

We feel they would ostensibly be better and more effective at delivering this sort of knowledge than us parents.

With the high fees we pay for “innovative” and “state-of-the-art” education, we feel sure that our teenagers are being taught all they need to know about money. We

skilfully pass this responsibility on and rest easy.

Ship Worldwide with SelfShip SelfShip

Ship Worldwide with SelfShip Ad

The problem is that the education system is equally good at this game. It throws the responsibility off, citing lack of time, funds and resources.

Their time, they feel, is better spent preparing teens for college entrance exams and ticking the boxes on all the government-mandated subjects.

Their funds aren’t enough to cover teaching an extra subject that isn’t part of the regular curriculum and isn’t government mandated to boot. They also don’t have teaching staff and operational resources to pull this off, they say.

They see personal finance as being firmly in the parental teaching domain and make an adept throwback to the parents.

With all these fantastic passes and throws being executed by the two stakeholders who have the most impact on the teenagers, the teenagers end up losing.

Because we parents continue to delude ourselves that this isn’t our responsibility, we aren’t making a move to play.

3. We’re out of mental bandwidth We parents have too much on our plates. Between keeping our teenagers alive and well, fed and out of trouble and dealing with the elusive work-life balance, we don’t have much mental bandwidth left over for tending to teens’ financial educational needs. (Continued On Page 21)

not think about and we can easily defer this because we don’t see the immediate benefits. This makes it easier to undervalue and leave out.

Remember our blind spot? We’re not absolutely convinced they need that education anyway. They seem to be doing just fine.

Therefore, we wait to deal with this issue once we’re done with all the other urgent stuff, but we never seem to run out of the urgent stuff.

Suddenly, our teens are now off to college, or have started their first job and we still haven’t given them the crucial financial education they need.

These three reasons give us an insight into why we, as well-intentioned parents who want the best for our teenagers, sit on the sidelines when we should be the star players in the game.

Psychologist Reveals 3 Signs Your Partner Is Manipulating You

A psychologist has revealed three signs your partner is manipulating you to stop you from leaving - from gas lighting to financial control and isolating you.

Birmingham-based chartered psychologist and author Dr Lalitaa Suglani, who offers courses on topics including managing anxiety, overcoming fear and imposter syndrome, took to Instagram to share information on the topic in a recent video post.

She accompanied the video with a caption which said: ‘Have you ever felt like you couldn’t trust your thoughts because your partner insisted you said something you’re pretty sure you didn’t?

‘And how often do you end up saying sorry even when you know you didn’t do anything wrong?’

She continued, writing that manipulation can be so sneaky that ‘we don’t even notice it happening’.

Listing the three ways a person can manipulate their partner into staying in a relationship, she said: ‘Number one is gaslighting.

‘This involves manipulating someone into questioning their own perceptions, their own memories and sanity.

‘Abusers may use gaslighting techniques to make their partner doubt their experiences, making them feel confused and uncertain about leaving.’

Moving onto her second sign, she listed isolation, which she described as being where your partner ‘may isolate you from your

This, she said, is to ‘control their access to help or information making it harder for them to leave the relationship’.

Continuing the video, Dr Suglani said: ‘Number three is financial control.

‘This is where they may control all of their partner’s finances, making them dependent on money or resources.

One wrote: ‘Yep , those three ways sound far too familiar to me. Thank god I was eventually able to extricate myself , however the impact from years of this and pernicious behaviour takes a lot of work to move on.’

Another added: ‘Wow. Totally felt this one. Mental Health – Surgeon General Advocates Social Media Warning Labels

(Continued From Page 01) potential mental health risks these platforms pose to teenagers.

Dr. Murthy’s call for legislative action comes as awareness grows about the dangers of social media for young people, with platforms facing lawsuits for their roles in the youth mental health crisis and making attempts to mitigate some harm.

In a New York Times op-ed, Murthy emphasized the urgency of the situation.

“The mental health crisis among young people is an emergency — and social media has emerged as an important contributor,” he wrote.

Murthy suggested that warning labels, similar to those on tobacco products, could raise awareness and influence behavior change.

Citing statistics, Murthy noted that teens who spend more than three hours daily on social media are at an increased risk of anxiety and depression.

6. You have to grow from the inside out. None can teach you, none can make you spiritual. There is no other teacher but your own soul.

7. Condemn none: if you can stretch out a helping hand, do so. If you cannot, fold your hands, bless your brothers, and let them go their own way.

8. In a conflict between the heart and the brain, follow your heart.

9. Learn everything that is good from others, but bring it in, and in your own way absorb it; do not become others.

10. Truth can be stated in a thousand different ways, yet each one can be true

11. Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle.

Furthermore, almost half of teens reported that these platforms negatively affect their self-image.

“We have the expertise, resources, and tools to make social media safe for our kids. Now is the time to summon the will to act,” Murthy stated.

As Surgeon General, Murthy has prioritized addressing America’s mental health crisis, particularly focusing on the impact of social media on adolescents.

Last year, he issued a public health advisory detailing the harms of social media to young people and recommended new safeguards for policymakers, platforms, and parents to implement.

India-West Staff Reporter

LOS ANGELES, CA – Director

Sarvnik Kaur’s latest documentary, ‘Against the Tide,’ dives deep into the lives of Rakesh and Ganesh, two indigenous fishermen from Mumbai, grappling with the challenges brought on by environmental decline. This poignant film highlights their friendship and the contrasting approaches they take to fishing, as Rakesh adheres to traditional methods while Ganesh explores modern technology.

Kaur’s first feature documentary, ‘A Ballad of Maladies,’ explored the tradition of political resistance in Kashmir through the work of those poets, musicians, and artists who have turned their art into weapons of resistance during periods of heightened state repression and violence in the region.
