4 Ways To Support Local Shelters During The Holiday Season

The holidays are a time of giving, and there are few better ways to spread joy than by giving back to those in need in your community.

Consider these impactful ways to support local shelters and make a difference this holiday season.

Donate Essential Items to Shelters

One of the most direct ways to support local shelters is donating essential items.

Shelters have a constant need for toiletries, warm clothing, blankets and non-perishable food items.

By providing these necessities, you help ensure individuals and families in need can stay warm, clean and fed during the cold win-

ter months. Consider organizing a donation drive among your friends, family or coworkers.

Collect items such as socks, gloves, scarves and hygiene products to

deliver to your local shelter.

Volunteer Your Time and Skills Shelters often rely on volunteers to help with a variety of tasks, from serving meals and organizing do-

nations to providing administrative support and offering professional services like legal aid or counseling.

Consider what skills you can offer and reach out to see how you can assist.

Organize a Fundraising Event

Whether it’s a bake sale, charity run or virtual auction, fundraising events can help local shelters provide essential services and support to those in need.

Get creative with your fundraising ideas and use social media to promote your event. Engage local businesses and community members to participate and donate.

Spread Awareness Through Social Media

Social media is a powerful tool for spreading awareness and encouraging others to get involved.

Use your platforms to share information about the needs of local shelters, upcoming events and ways people can help.

Create posts highlighting the stories of those impacted by shelter services and provide links to donation pages or volunteer sign-ups.

38% Decline In Indian Students Getting F-1 Visas In 2024

India-West News Desk

WASHINGTON, DC – Indian students, who are the largest group of international students in the United States, are facing a significant drop in study visa approvals. Data from the U.S. State Department reveals a 38% decline in F-1 visas issued to Indian nationals between January and September 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.

This year, only 64,008 Indian students received F-1 visas, a steep fall from 103,495 issued during the same timeframe last year.

The numbers mark the lowest since 2020, when the pandemic caused widespread disruptions, resulting in just 6,646 visas being issued during that period.

While the 2020 figures were an anomaly, subsequent years saw a

Bengaluru Consulate To Open In 2025

India-West News Desk

BENGALURU – US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti announced that the long-awaited US Consulate in Bengaluru will officially open in January 2025.

The announcement was made during a meeting of the US-India Business Council (USIBC) on Thursday, signaling a significant milestone in US-India relations.

Bengaluru, often referred to as India’s Silicon Valley, contributes 40% of the nation’s IT revenue and is home to millions of tech professionals.

Until now, the absence of a dedicated US Consulate in the city forced many residents to travel to Chennai or Hyderabad for visarelated services, creating logistical challenges for students, professionals, and entrepreneurs.

strong rebound, with 93,181 visas issued to Indian students in 2022 and 65,235 in 2021. However, 2024’s sharp decline reverses this recovery trend.

The drop in visas is not exclusive to Indian students. Chinese nationals, who form the second-largest international student cohort in the U.S., also saw an 8% decrease in F-1 visa approvals in 2024. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

Highlighting the significance of the new consulate, Garcetti noted its potential to simplify visa processes, foster bilateral trade, and strengthen Bengaluru’s status as a global hub for technology and innovation.

Speaking at the USIBC meeting, Garcetti remarked, “Together, we are driving US-India relations forward for prosperity—creating op-

portunities not just for our people, but for the Indo-Pacific and the world.”

He also praised the collaboration between American and Indian businesses.

“Had a great discussion with USIBC MD Rahul Sharma on how U.S. and Indian businesses can integrate progress, principles, and persistence to fulfill shared commitments,” he said.

The consulate’s establishment is expected to boost US-India ties, particularly in the tech and innovation sectors, and facilitate smoother interactions between the two nations.

It is anticipated to enhance access for thousands of visa applicants, including students aiming to study in the US and professionals engaged in cross-border collaborations.

The move is a testament to Bengaluru’s growing prominence as a key player in the global economy and the deepening strategic partnership between the United States and India.

Take The Life-Saving Step Of Testing For Radon

Radon—an odorless, tasteless and colorless gas found in homes and buildings at high levels throughout the United States—is the second leading cause of lung cancer, responsible for about 21,000 deaths each year, and the leading cause of lung cancer among people who don’t smoke.

The American Lung Association is partnering with Protect Environmental to educate and empower communities nationwide to take action to prevent lung cancer this January, which is National Radon Action Month, and throughout the year. As part of the campaign, they are answering some frequently asked questions about radon:

What is radon? Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas emitted from the ground. Uranium in soil and rocks breaks down to form radium. As radium decays, radioactive particles (radon gas) are released into the air.

Why is radon found in buildings? Radon gas enters buildings through cracks in walls, basements, floors, foundations, and potentially, through water used in showers and faucets, trapping it inside.

Why is radon harmful? Radon gas particles can be inhaled in your lungs, attacking cells with dangerous, cancer-causing radiation. Radon exposure has no immediate symptoms; however, the long-term threat of health problems, including lung cancer, is serious.

How is radon detected? The only way to know the radon level in your home and workplace is to conduct a radon test. Dangerous radon levels have been found in every state, so every building should be regularly tested.

Testing is the first step in reducing risk of radon-induced lung cancer and is recommended every two to five years, even if you have a mitigation system. The Lung Association and Protect Environmental are offering

free radon test kits to homeowners in select communities across the United States. Visit Lung.org/protect-environmental to learn more and check your eligibility for receiving a test kit.

What should I do if I detect high radon levels? Radon gas is measured in picocuries per liter (pCi/L) of air. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends taking action to reduce radon if levels are 4.0 pCi/L or

greater, and to consider similar actions when the radon level is between 2.0 and 4.0 pCi/L. If you discover high radon levels in your home, a radon mitigation system should be installed to reduce the amount of radon to a safer level. Just be sure you work with a professional who is certified in radon mitigation. Using unqualified professionals may lead to faulty installation, which can cause property damage and even increase indoor radon levels.

The American Lung Association’s campaign to raise awareness on the importance of radon testing is supported by Protect Environmental. For more information, visit Lung.org/protectenvironmental.

“I’ve been to too many homes where no one knew to test for radon until someone in the home got the devastating diagnosis of lung cancer,” says Kyle Hoylman, chief executive officer of Protect Environmental. “Taking action to reduce radon through mitigation and regular testing is an investment in the lung health of everyone in the building and could be a lifesaving improvement.” (StatePoint)

Americans Prioritize Giving, Even When Squeezed By Economic Uncertainty

A new study reveals Americans’ relationship with charitable giving. While generosity is a core value for three-quarters of Americans, economic concerns have caused some to tighten their purse strings. Nevertheless, many Americans are open to advice for how they can prioritize philanthropy.

In a new national survey from Wells Fargo, 29% of Americans report that they have given less to charity this year compared to last and 51% feel they don’t have enough money to give to charity at all.

Even so, 67% of Americans reported giving something in the past year, with 54% saying they give to charity even though they don’t have a lot of extra money. The study found that economic concern is a significant factor in declined giving, with 52% of Americans reporting that their reduced giving is a direct result of the current economy.

“The data shows us that the pinch of rising costs is driving a moral dilemma. Many Americans are in a standoff between what they want to do and what they can do,” says Stephanie Buckley,

Investment Management.

Despite this dilemma, the study reveals that among the two in three Americans who made a charitable donation this year, 53% still re-

port giving the same amount to charity as last year and another 19% report giving more.

In fact, 60% of these Americans are so committed to their giving that they list charity as part of their budget and 24% will go as far as to defer their own financial needs in order to give.

Happiness Drives Giving

Driving factors of American giving are largely altruistic. The most common motivations cited are that it makes them happy, it aligns with their personal values, and because they have a personal connection to a cause. Comparatively, financial benefits have very little to do with it, with only 10% of Americans giving for tax deduction purposes. (Continued On Page 05)

Improving Health Equity In Tribal Communities

Heart disease is the number one killer of new moms in the United States, and American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) women have even more risk factors for poor heart health than the general population, such as high rates of Type 2 diabetes, obesity and smoking, as well as increased exposure to trauma and violence. In fact, recent research reports that more than 60% of AI/AN women have suboptimal heart health when they enter pregnancy, which is strongly related to the development of heart disease later in life.

According to the American Heart Association and the National Collaborative for Infants and Toddlers, addressing heart disease risks in AI/AN women requires not only attention to traditional cardiovascular disease risk factors, but also an understanding of how the legacy of colonization, exploitation, racism and discrimination shape the health of members of these communities.

That’s why a new policy agenda identifies the most impactful ways to protect Tribal

women during the vulnerable period of pregnancy, while honoring Tribal sovereignty.

The Tribal Prenatal-to-Three Policy Agenda, from the National Indian Health Board (NIHB), focuses on the earliest years of life, and highlights both the opportunities and complexities that arise within Tribal communities. It is a culmination of a three-year project supported by the Pritzker Children’s Initiative involving a thorough review of existing literature, as well as engagement with subject matter experts and Tribes. These are its five recommendations for charting a path forward to health equity and improved outcomes for AI/AN families:

1. Protect tribal sovereignty and self-determination: Tribal sovereignty–the inherent right of Tribal nations to self-govern–is the foundation of advancing health equity for American Indians and Alaska Natives. Many of the current issues Tribal communities face are rooted in colonization and a history of paternalistic federal policy. Tribal sovereignty and self-determination are essential for healing from this harmful legacy and setting a more equitable, effective path forward.

Americans Prioritize Giving, Even When Squeezed By Economic Uncertainty

(Continued On Page 04)

“There is a mistaken belief that many people give for selfish reasons, particularly among the affluent. In actuality, no matter the level of wealth, giving tends to almost always be driven by wanting to make an impact, “says Buckley. “In fact, anonymous giving continues to be a rising trend.”

Givers Want to Be Strategic

While 52% of Americans don’t get any advice about charitable giving, 57% want to be more strategic about it—a sentiment that could be amplified by the fact that almost half of Americans report being bombarded with donation requests.

Philanthropic experts warn that not having a plan can lead to a “smear the peanut butter” approach, where you write checks and donate without thinking about how it aligns to what’s really important to you. Information about intentional giving can be found by visiting wellsfargo.com.

“Whether you are giving money, time or tal-

systems in place, while supporting healing from previous historical, intergenerational and individual trauma by strengthening culture.

4. Support Family-Centered Systems: The services and systems Native families must navigate can be complex, stressful and even traumatic. These barriers often prevent young families from accessing the essential care and services they need.

More Tribal control over programs can make these systems easier and friendlier to navigate. In short, prioritizing the needs of families and young children, rather than funders, will improve health and wellness outcomes.

ent, having a plan can block out some of the noise and help ensure you give with intention,” says Buckley.

2. Invest Equitable Resources and Funding: Tribes have been starved for funding and resources for centuries as federal policy created conditions of scarcity in Tribal communities. For any chance of widespread improvement in outcomes for children prenatal to 3, large-scale investment into Tribes must be prioritized.

3. Address Trauma and Strengthen Connection to Culture: Trauma is a root cause of many issues facing Tribal families. At the same time, connection to culture has been found to be a powerful component in building resilience and healing from trauma.

Protecting Native kids will require preventing trauma caused or worsened by many

5. Empower Tribal Voices in State and Federal Governance: Tribes must have a voice in the federal and state programs and policies that impact them. Improved state-Tribe and federal-Tribe relations can go a long way toward supporting the policies and infrastructure needed to improve the health and wellbeing of Native families.

For more information about policies that support families, visit https://www.ncit.org.

“We have a responsibility to support AI/ AN children, families, and communities in the foundational years of life,” says William “Chief Bill” Smith, NIHB chairman. “By centering Tribal values and perspectives, the Tribal Prenatal-to-Three Policy Agenda represents an essential framework for meaningful policy development and implementation.” (StatePoint)

10 Health Recommendations For The New Year

Looking to improve your health in 2025 and beyond? Check out these recommendations from the American Medical Association:

Make nutritional tweaks: Reduce your intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and processed foods, especially those with added sodium and sugar. Drinking sugary beverages, even 100% fruit juices, is associated with a higher mortality risk, according to a study published in JAMA Network Open.

Drink water and choose nutritious, whole foods including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and

seeds, low-fat dairy products, and lean meats and poultry.

Get active: A recent study published in JAMA found that putting down the TV remote and going for a walk can improve healthy aging—highlighting the importance of small everyday habits. Adults should get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity, or 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity activity.

Get up-to-date: Get your vaccines in advance of respiratory virus season—including the annual flu vaccine and the updated 2024-2025

COVID-19 vaccine for everyone six months and older, as well as pregnant people. People 65 and older and those who are moderately or severely immunocompromised should receive a second dose of the 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine six months later.

RSV can be dangerous for older adults. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend those 75 and older, and 60 and older at high risk for severe RSV, get vaccinated. Immunizations are also available to protect babies from getting very sick from RSV. This is important because

Resolve To Ace Math Class In The Spring Semester

Do your New Year’s resolutions include improving your grades? If so, here are five habits you can adopt to ace math class this spring semester:

1. Meet with your teacher: If you’re feeling a bit lost during a lesson or you receive a grade on a test that you’re not happy about, see your teacher about it. Most teachers want their students to thrive and are happy to schedule an appointment to go over tricky concepts. If your teacher has a tight schedule, they may be able to recommend learning resources or a good tutor. Don’t be embarrassed about sharing your struggles. The important thing is to speak up sooner rather than later so you don’t fall further behind.

2. Equip yourself with the right tools: When shopping for educa-

tional tools, you don’t need to compromise your learning potential to stay within budget. Give yourself every advantage you need to succeed by equipping yourself with an affordable calculator that helps you actually understand the concepts behind the equations, and one which will save you time when you need it most. With its Natural Textbook Display and intuitive icon menu, the fx-9750GIII graphing calculator from Casio is incredibly easy to use, whether you’re graph plotting, doing vector arithmetic or creating a spreadsheet. Approved for the SAT, PSAT, ACT and AP tests, this model includes Exam Mode to lock specific functionality for testing purposes, making it a must-have tool not only during late night study sessions and daily lessons, but also during timed tests

3. Study regularly: It’s a good idea

RSV is the leading cause of infant hospitalization nationwide.

to review recent chapters and class notes after school each day, even if there is no formal homework assignment. You may even want to complete a few relevant practice exercises. Doing so will help you synthesize the information from the latest lesson and prime you to learn new material the next time class meets.

4. Stay sharp: Free online educational tools can help you stay sharp, even when class is out of session. Check out Casio’s education blog found at casioeducation.com/blog for exam-specific study tips, math activities and advice on using your calculator effectively.

5. Stay organized: Create a system for note-taking that works for you and be sure to keep your notes, assignments and marked up quizzes and exams tidy. This organization will not only aid your comprehension of the material, but also help you find the information you need to prepare for exams and complete assignments.

Whether math is your favorite subject or the one that puts the heaviest strain on your GPA, you can enter the new year and the new semester with a clean slate, and great habits that will help you make the grade.

If you have questions, speak with your physician and review trusted resources, including GetMyFluShot.org.

You can also reduce the spread of respiratory viruses by covering coughs and sneezes, frequently washing your hands, wearing masks, improving air quality, and staying home if you are sick.

Get screened: Make an appointment for preventive care, tests and screenings to help your doctor spot certain conditions before they become more serious.

Know your blood pressure numbers: Visit ManageYourBP.org to understand your blood pressure numbers and take necessary steps to get hypertension under control. Doing so will reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke. If checking your blood pressure at home, visit ValidateBP.org to see if your device has been tested for accuracy.

Learn your type 2 diabetes risk: Take a 2-minute self-screening test at DoIHavePrediabetes.org. Steps you take now can help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes, which carries a higher risk of heart disease, kidney disease and vision loss.

Drink only in moderation: If consuming alcohol, do so in moderation as defined by the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans—up to

one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men, and only by adults of legal drinking age.

Quit tobacco and nicotine: Ask your doctor for resources and guidance for quitting tobacco and nicotine. Declare your home and car smoke-free to eliminate secondhand smoke exposure.

Follow dosage instructions: When taking prescription opioids or other medications, store them safely to prevent diversion or misuse, and properly dispose of any leftover medication.

If you’re prescribed antibiotics, take the full course to prevent antibiotic resistance—a serious public health problem.

Manage stress: Good mental health is part of good overall health. Get sufficient sleep (at least 7.5 hours per night), exercise and ask for help from a mental health professional when you need it.

More health resources and tips can be found by visiting ama-assn.org.

“The best way to address the postholiday doldrums is to do something good for your health,” said Bruce A. Scott, M.D., president of the AMA.

“Even small, positive choices you make now can have a big impact on your long-term wellbeing.” (StatePoint)

Increasing Native Representation in the Financial Services Industry

Ensuring that financial service providers reflect the diversity of the people they serve is key to creating an inclusive financial system that offers everyone a chance to thrive.

That’s according to the authors of a new report.

The case study, created by the Aspen Institute Financial Security Program and supported by Wells Fargo, highlights the intentional strategies and support systems that have successfully expanded Native American representation in the legal field and explores how similar approaches can enhance diversity in finance and banking.

Recognizing the need for this story to be told, Dawson Her Many Horses, one of the first enrolled tribal members named managing director of a major financial institution and head of Native American Banking at Wells Fargo, proposed the idea for the study and was involved, along with Wells Fargo, in the pro-

cess of designing the study’s methodology and identifying the leaders who were asked to participate. Native legal professionals were asked to share how they arrived in their current positions, what inspired them to study law, what challenges they faced along the way and what support systems aided them in their journey.

Offering an optimistic outlook, the in-depth interviews showed that having a diverse, coordinated set of institutions, champions and community support, starting as early as in high school, can create pathways that nurture and grow the ranks of Native bankers and finance professionals.

“Economic sovereignty is an important aspect of tribal sovereignty. Like the legal system, the financial system is another sector where Native representation is crucial for the economic development of tribal nations,” says Her Many Horses.

According to Her Many Horses, recent events could be a steppingstone to more positive change. President Biden recently issued a formal apology for the federal Indian boarding school era, which involved the forced removal of Native children from their families and communities.

“Economic reconciliation mea-

sures, such as calling on corporations to adopt policies that engage Indigenous communities, are already part of Canada’s reckoning with this painful piece of history.

On the heels of Biden’s apology, the United States can look at this model as a guide,” says Her Many Horses.

To view the report and learn more, visit aspeninstitute.org.

Diverse representation across the financial services industry, including at the highest levels of decision-making, can increase the likelihood that Indigenous communities are well-served.

Thankfully, the collective effort to increase Native representation in the legal field offers a clear path forward for institutions and individuals looking to do the same in financing and banking. (StatePoint)

Employment Pathways

Many Indians secure permanent residency through employmentbased preference categories, a key factor in their naturalization journey.

The median time spent as a lawful permanent resident before naturalizing varies by nationality, and Indians, often pursuing advanced careers, exemplify this trend. States - Several U.S. states and cities with significant Indian American populations emerged as key hubs for naturalizations in FY 2024. California, Texas, and New York led the states, while cities like Houston, Miami, and Los Angeles hosted large naturalization ceremonies. Gender - Women accounted for 55 percent of all naturalized citizens this year, with over 37 percent of new citizens aged between 30 and 44. The median age of naturalized citizens was 42, with 17 percent under the age of 30. (https://indiawest.com/)

Healthy Holiday Tips For Pregnant People

The holidays often bring colder weather and more indoor gatherings. Respiratory viruses like flu, COVID-19 and RSV are common this time of year.

Illness from these viruses can be dangerous for pregnant people and newborns. Staying up to date on vaccines for flu, COVID-19 and RSV during pregnancy can offer protection, and now is the time to get vaccinated if you haven’t already.

“During the holidays, pregnant people can help protect their health and the health of their baby by getting updated vaccines,” said Dr. Rachel Levine, assistant secretary for health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). “During the holidays, you’re more likely to be exposed to flu, COVID-19 and RSV. Vaccination not only helps build up your immune system but can give protection for your little one.”

Here are some tips from the HHS Risk Less. Do More. public education campaign for a safe and festive holiday season:

Get vaccinated against flu and COVID-19.

Getting sick with flu or COVID-19 can be dangerous for people who are pregnant and young infants. During pregnancy, there is a greater risk of flu or COVID-19 infections becoming severe and leading to hospitalization. Babies are also at risk of severe flu and COVID-19, but they cannot get vaccines until they are 6 months old. By getting vac-

Get vaccinated against RSV if you’re eligible. RSV is a common cause of severe respiratory illness in infants. In fact, it is the top reason babies in the United States are

hospitalized each year. You can get an RSV vaccine if you are 32-36 weeks pregnant between September and January, the months when RSV spreads the most. The RSV vaccine helps your baby build protection from severe RSV before birth. If you do not get an RSV vaccine during pregnancy, your newborn can still get protection through a preventive antibody immunization soon after birth.

Stay home or change plans when ill. If you are not feeling well, stay home to avoid spreading illness. Also, if someone you plan to see is sick or respiratory viruses are surging in your community, consider staying home. You can also wear a mask or, if weather permits, move the gathering outdoors.

If you have questions or concerns, talk to your doctor. Knowing the facts about vaccines and pregnancy can offer confidence and comfort. Visit cdc.gov/RiskLessDoMore to learn more about getting your flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccines before the holidays. Or visit vaccines.gov to get started.

Healthy Heart

(Continued From Page 01)

The consequences of neglecting one’s heart are severe and far-reaching within one’s body and lifestyle. Coronary artery disease, heart attacks, heart failures, and aortic aneurysms are just a small list of possible detriments. These afflictions are detrimental to the quality of life. Survivors of strokes sometimes have to live with paralysis, personality changes, and aphasia (problems understanding or producing speech) for the rest of their lives.

Although heart disease may seem inevitable, maintaining a healthy heart is plausible through consistent heart-conscious lifestyle choices. Regular physical activity is one of the most effective ways to strengthen the heart. The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity weekly. Swimming, cycling, or any other activity that elevates heart and respiration rates accomplishes that goal.

How To Keep Kids’ Minds Active During The Holiday Break

Even a short vacation from school can cause learning loss and leave kids feeling behind when they return to the classroom.

Fortunately, there are many ways to keep minds active during the holiday break, some of which will reinforce the concepts they are learning in school. Here are a few of them:

Vacation Reading: Whether you’re traveling for the holidays or sticking close to home, curling up with a book is a great way to spend some of the inevitable down time. At the start of the break, hit up the library so everyone in the family will have plenty to read on subjects of interest to them.

You might also consider giving at least one title to each gift recipient

on your list this year to emphasize the idea that books can be treasured objects.

Online Math Tools: Casio’s suite of engaging education resources can help ensure students keep up their skills during the holidays.

Those with the fx-9750GIII graphing calculator or (other easy-to-use models with hundreds of functions) will find plenty to challenge them when they check out Casio’s expansive resource library of activities, Python programs and more, all of which are available for free online.

From calculating slopes and finding derivatives to evaluating inferences and predications based on data, the resource includes exercises for every area of mathematical

focus, including calculus, geometry and statistics.

Historical Day Trip: Take a day trip to a historic site to bring the past to life. Whether you visit a battlefield, the home of a notable figure, or a historically preserved city center, your trip will provoke discussion and keep minds engaged.

If taking a scheduled tour is not possible due to limited holiday hours, do a bit of research on the site beforehand to give your family more context about what they will be seeing. This will make the trip more enjoyable and engaging.

Exercise: Staying active is not just good for physical health, it’s also good for the mind and soul. With no P.E. class on the schedule however, kids may be missing out on their daily dose of exercise.

Be sure to go on a walk or bike ride each day or get out in the yard for some touch football or frisbee. If the weather is frightful, visit a yoga studio or even stay home and do an exercise class on YouTube.

This holiday season, balancing educational and healthy activities with fun and relaxation can help ensure your students return to school focused, engaged and ready to start a brand new semester. (StatePoint)

What People Living With COPD Or Emphysema Need To Know About Available Treatments

More than 11 million people in the United States are living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including more than 3 million people with emphysema, a type of COPD.

This chronic lung disease limits air flow and causes breathing-related symptoms. While there is no cure, an innovative treatment option is helping some patients with severe COPD or emphysema breathe easier.

Endobronchial Valve Therapy (EBV) is a minimally invasive treatment option that aims to improve lung function, activity level and your quality of life.

“I noticed the first day after receiving EBV that I was able to take a very deep breath. Before my treatment, my breathing was very shallow,” says Karrie E., who is now able to walk longer distances before taking rests, as well as go to the grocery store to do her own

Carolyn P., who also received EBV therapy after living with COPD for years agrees, “I had the valves put in and it changed the quality of my life. I can walk without feeling like my chest is going to burst.” Carolyn is now a regular walker at the malls in her hometown.

So, what are EBVs? According to the American Lung Association, which has partnered with Zephyr by Pulmonx to create awareness for managing advanced COPD with EBV, these one-way valves reduce lung hyperinflation by allowing trapped air to escape.

As a result, lung function may improve when healthier areas of the lung provide the necessary oxygen exchange. They may help with feeling less short of breath and being more active.

This safe, effective treatment option for eligible patients is backed by research-based evidence, and currently, there are two FDA-approved types of valves.

If you have been diagnosed with advanced COPD or emphysema and do not smoke or are willing to quit, EBV treatment might be the right option for you.

This relatively quick, non-surgical procedure takes place in a hospital, and has a short recovery time, generally requiring about a three-day hospital stay.

Those who have found success with the procedure—less shortness of breath and a greater quality of life—encourage others not to delay treatment: “If it’s right for you, don’t wait to have it done,” says Bryan C.

The American Lung Association encourages you to speak with your healthcare provider about this treatment option. You can learn more and take an online questionnaire to determine if you qualify for this procedure by visiting Lung. org/ebv.

If you are one of the millions of Americans living with COPD, you can breathe easier knowing that advances in treatments are helping people with your condition live a better quality of life. (StatePoint)

Christmas Price Index 2024 Reflects Wage Growth And Rising Service Prices

On the first day of Christmas, holiday gift giving begins with the traditional gift of a Partridge in a Pear Tree. By the first day of January, True Love pays the bill. Each holiday season, the PNC’s Christmas Price Index tabulates the price to gift all the items in the song “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” and this year, that figure amounts to $49,263.47, a 5.4% increase from 2023.

PNC’s Christmas Price Index mimics the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) Consumer Price Index, which measures the average change in prices consumers pay for goods and services over time. Notably higher in 2024 than the BLS’ CPI, which increased 2.4% year over year, PNC’s index reflects wage growth in the service industry as the primary driver of the overall higher price tag. “Believe it or not, we’re still seeing the cause and effect of the pandemic-inflation hangover, even nearly five years later,” says Amanda Agati, chief investment officer of PNC’s Asset Management Group. “With years of steep price increases, we’d think inflation has nowhere to go, but we’d be wrong.”

Services Over Goods

The service-based economy is represented by the last four gifts in the index – the Ladies Dancing, Lords-a-Leaping, Pipers Piping and Drummers Drumming. They’re traditionally priced based on the cost to hire various performers and musicians. The Ten-Lords-ALeaping, at $14,539.20, is the highest priced gift in the index for the third straight year. Overall, the service-sector gifts rose in price by 7.9% in 2024.

This rise of service-sector prices reflects a longterm evolution away from a focus on manufacturing in the U.S. economy since PNC’s index launched in 1984. At that time, goods comprised 70% of the Consumer Price Index, while

today that number stands at just 35%. Many of the gifts in the index representing goods remained unchanged in price in 2024 – the Turtle Doves, Calling Birds, Gold Rings and Swans all stayed flat, though still expensive year over year. The French Hens and Geese were the avian exceptions, with the latter representing one of the most volatile gifts in this year’s index, growing by more than 15%.

Housing Still High

The most volatile gift in the 2024 index is the first one – the Partridge in a Pear Tree - which rose in price by 17.1%. The least volatile gift, the Eight-Maids-a-Milking, has remained unchanged since 2009.

The Christmas Price Index also calculates the “True Cost of Christmas,” which is the cost of purchasing all of the gifts as they repeat in the verses of the song. That cost increased by 3.6% to $209,272 in 2024, crossing the $200K threshold for the second year in a row. If you prefer to shop online, you’ll pay nearly $5K more for the convenience, and of course the packaging and shipping that gifts of birds require. PNC’s online Christmas Price Index cost rose by 3.9% in 2024 to a total of $54,073.69. Most of the gifts commanded an increase for internet shopping, but if you’re looking for bargain buys based on last year’s budget, the price of the Calling Birds, Gold Rings and Swans remained flat online in 2024.

For more information on the index, individual gifts and a 41-year tradition, visit pnc. com. “Buying the same gifts year after year may seem boring,” says Agati, “but keeping track of changes in your spending enables you to be more brilliant with your money, which is what I think the Christmas Price Index sets out to do.” (StatePoint)

Helping Children Develop Healthy Device and Media Habits

What are TikTok’s privacy settings? Can parents control what advertising their children see on Facebook? How do parents limit the amount of time their children spend on Instagram?

A new parent tool, the Glossary of Digital Media Platforms, offers the answers and will be handy for parents of children trying out new phones or other tech-related holiday gifts.

The American Academy of Pediatrics Center of Excellence on Social Media and Youth Mental Health developed the free resource, which contains detailed information on popular digital platforms, including Apple, Discord, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, TikTok and X, with more to come.

“Parenting around media can be so challenging,” said Jenny Radesky, MD, FAAP, co-medical director of the Center of Excellence. “Figuring out what apps and settings are best for your family is an important part of the conversation. At the center, we created the Glossary of Digital Media Platforms to make it a little easier for parents to learn about each app and figure out what settings and tools exist to keep their kid safe while connecting online.”

Users click on a platform to learn about its default and customizable safety settings; messaging and friending controls; screentime management settings; parental controls and more.

Parents aren’t the only ones looking for assistance when it comes to the online world. Pediatric providers, teachers and others who work with children and teens can introduce the glossary briefly during clinic visits, back-to-school nights, in newsletters, or other communications and encourage families to have conversations about safe and balanced relationships with social media. The tool can also facilitate conversations on concepts like private versus

public accounts, time limits and how to block or filter upsetting content.

Here are some examples of how the glossary can be used:

• If children have iPhones, parents can learn more about the Family Sharing feature, which includes settings to limit who a child can contact, downtime/do-not-disturb settings and the Ask To Buy option that requires a parent to approve purchases.

• If social media and notifications are distracting teens at night, families can use the glossary to look up apps and how to silence notifications or activate other nighttime settings.

• For teens who are stressed out by negative content on social media feeds, the glossary contains information on tools to curate feeds and block and filter content.

• If a child’s school has a phone policy, families can look up device or app settings to silence distracting apps during school hours.

The glossary joins a roster of resources available at Center of Excellence on Social Media and Youth Mental Health, which includes conversation starters for parents concerned about how their children are using social media. The center’s activity cards can help young children build healthy relationships with media and their devices before they grow into teens and young adults.

Megan Moreno MD, MSEd, MPH, FAAP, co-medical director of the Center of Excellence, urges parents and other adults to avoid taking a doom-and-gloom approach when talking about the sometimes-dangerous social media landscape with kids.

“We can give ourselves grace for these initial reactions of worry and fear, but we have a choice to make on what we want our reaction to be going forward,” Dr. Moreno said. “We can choose open-mindedness. We can choose curiosity. We can choose evidence over hype, and we can stay centered on our children and families.” (StatePoint)

How To Supplement Breastfeeding With Bottle Feeding

For moms who breastfeed, the idea of introducing a bottle can feel like a big change. Whether supplementing for personal reasons, returning to work or ensuring adequate nourishment, the transition between breast and bottle can be eased with the right approach – and the right tools. Here’s how to make this process smooth and stress-free for both you and your baby.

Begin Gradually and Mindfully

When supplementing with a bottle, it’s important to start slowly, ideally once breastfeeding is wellestablished, usually after the first few weeks. Begin by replacing one breastfeeding session with a bottle feeding and gradually increase as needed.

This gradual transition helps your baby adapt to the new experience without feeling overwhelmed or confused. If you have questions or concerns about introducing bottle feeding, your pediatrician is an excellent resource.

Prioritize the Right Bottle Design

Using a bottle that closely mirrors the breastfeeding experience can make all the difference in a smooth transition.

For example, NUK’s Perfect Match Bottle, from the No. 1 hospitaltrusted brand (based on industry data) for feeding, is specifically designed to bridge the gap between breast and bottle feeding. Its ultra-

soft silicone nipple is shaped to mimic the feel of a mother’s breast, adapting to your baby’s unique palate for a familiar, comforting feeding experience. This breast-like comfort can make the transition seamless and intuitive for babies.

Additionally, it features an advanced anti-colic venting system that minimizes air intake, reducing digestive discomfort and keeping

your baby comfortable for a calm, enjoyable feeding time – without the hassle of extra parts to clean.

Maintain Familiar Feeding Conditions

Convincing a breastfed baby to take a bottle can take a bit of patience. Ease the transition by creating an environment similar to breastfeeding conditions to provide a comforting and familiar experience for your baby. Hold your baby close, make eye contact and create a quiet environment to establish a sense of security. Also, plan for bottle feedings when you know your baby is ready to eat, but not overly hungry or fussy.

Use a Safe and Convenient Feeding System

One common concern when supplementing is ensuring milk is served at a safe temperature. With a built-in SafeTemp indicator that changes color if the milk is too hot, the NUK Perfect Match bottle

gives parents peace of mind. This feature can simplify the feeding process, making it more intuitive for busy caregivers.

Enlist Help with Bottle Feeding

Sometimes, a baby may be more likely to accept a bottle when offered by someone other than the breastfeeding parent. A partner or caregiver can introduce bottle feeding, helping your baby adapt without associating it directly with breastfeeding. Once established, you can alternate who offers the bottle.

Stay Flexible and Patient

Every baby’s journey is unique, and patience is key. If challenges arise during supplementation, such as bottle refusal or digestive changes, seek guidance from your pediatrician or a lactation consultant. They can help tailor the approach to your baby’s needs.

New Year, New Goals For People And Pets

A new year brings fresh opportunities for a lifestyle reboot, and as you set health goals for 2025, remember that your pet can embark on the journey to healthier living right along beside you. Whether you’re aiming to eat better, exercise more or find peace of mind, one of the best strategies for success is the buddy system – and your pet might be the perfect partner.

Consider these three ways you and your pet can work toward healthy habits together this year.

Exercise

Many people find it challenging to stick to a gym routine and get the most out of that membership. However, there are countless ways to get exercise without relying on fancy gym equipment and working out at home means you can include your pet in the fun too. Even a simple walk or jog with your dog can be essential for vitality and wellbeing.

When you’re feeling ready for more adventure, head to a local park or hit the trails for an extra challenge. To keep things fun, try a game of fetch in the backyard or visit a dog park to add variety to your routines.

Diet

Eating real, recognizable and nutritious foods is essential for both humans and pets. An option like Nature’s Recipe delivers premium, natural nutrition with added vitamins, minerals and nutrients

for pets at every life stage. With more than 40 years of expertise, its dog food recipes are inspired by nature and designed for dedicated pet parents who demand the best in nutrition.

“We’re committed to our promise that every ingredient counts,” said Dr. Preston Buff, principal scientist, nutrition and animal safety, Post Consumer Brands and Nature’s Recipe’s Pet nutritionist. “Pet parents can trust we use only the best to fuel their dog’s health and happiness. By focusing on premium ingredients that promote vitality, Nature’s Recipe empowers dog owners to invest in their pet’s health. We aim to recognize and delight pet parents who dive into

‘research mode’ and want healthy, nutrient-rich recipes.”

Emotional Serenity

Quality time with pets has been shown to lower cortisol levels in humans, helping to promote calm and wellness, according to the National Institutes of Health. Whether it’s a walk through the neighborhood, playing in the backyard, a gentle grooming session or simply offering the occasional belly rub, spending time with your pet can bring a sense of peace and wellbeing.

As you and your pet journey together toward a healthier lifestyle in 2025, remember the path to healthy living is even more rewarding when traveled with a buddy. Navigating Changes As A Family

(Continued From Page 01)

Whether it’s divorce, the death of a loved one, welcoming a new sibling or moving to a new home, these events impact every member of the family.

For young children, even small changes can feel monumental, and how adults talk with them affects how they respond and cope.

Dr. Lauren Loquasto, senior vice president and chief academic officer at The Goddard School, shares this guidance to help families navigate change.

Why Transitions Matter to Young Children

To understand why transitions affect children so deeply, it’s important to remember children see the world differently than adults. Their routines, relationships and surroundings establish a sense of security and safety.

Their families and role within them form their initial identities. Any disruption, big or small, can

shake their foundation. Children can handle change, but adults must help them process it.

Children are naturally perceptive. When something changes, they notice. When they lack the language or understanding to ask questions, they express their feelings through behavior. It’s how young children express, “I’m feeling something, but I don’t have the words for it.”

When children become clingier after a new sibling is born or struggle with meltdowns in a new classroom, they’re trying to process the changes in their lives. These behaviors signal, “I’m not sure what to do with all these feelings.”

View Changes Through Children’s Eyes

Everyone experiences changes differently. Even within the same family, adults and children may perceive and respond to the same event in unique ways. An adult may see moving to a new home as an exciting fresh start while children may see it as leaving behind the only bedroom they’ve ever known.

Approaching changes through a child’s lens helps reframe what’s happening. Instead of minimizing feelings, adults can acknowledge the shift children are experiencing and guide them with care.

Proactively Communicate When families face big changes,

Healthy Heart

(Continued From Page 08)

Exercise alone won’t prevent an unhealthy heart. Dietary choices play an equally crucial role.

A healthy diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins while minimizing saturated fats and processed food.

An example is the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in olive oil, fish, nuts, and vegetables.

It has consistently shown benefits for people’s hearts and is an excellent example of what a heart-conscious diet should look like.

Portion control and maintaining a healthy weight are also essential, as excess body weight strains the heart.

Managing stress is yet another vital component of maintaining a

healthy heart. Meditation, yoga, deep breathing exercises, or regular physical activity help manage stress levels.

Adequate sleep allows the heart to rest and repair itself as it pumps blood to a much calmer body.

Although these tips help keep a healthier heart, the risk of heart disease isn’t negligible.

Regular medical check-ups are crucial to maintaining heart health; catching sudden cholesterol and blood pressure increases can alert doctors and allow for timely intervention.

By making these choices a part of your daily life, you can dramatically reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and its complications.

Heart health isn’t about short-term fixes; it’s about creating sustain-

able, long-term habits that promote overall well-being.

Your heart works tirelessly to keep you alive — it deserves the same commitment in return.

We are a team of high schoolers from Stony Point High School participating in the HOSA Community Awareness competition.

We create fun and educational posts on our instagram: @rr_ healthy_hearts.

The topic we chose to raise awareness about is heart disease and keeping a healthy heart.

We chose this topic because of its prevalence in the United States. We believe that maintaining a healthy heart should be a crucial part of everyone’s lives and that we should do our part to reduce the death toll.

one of the most common questions is, “What do we tell the kids?” There’s often a struggle between wanting to protect children from overwhelming emotions and offering them enough information to make sense of what’s going on.

Rather than avoiding the conversation, discuss what’s happening using this framework:

1. Acknowledge what’s happening. Use clear, simple language, such as: “Daddy is moving to a different house and you’ll have two homes now.”

2. Focus on the present or immediate future. Young children often don’t have a solid grasp of time. While they can understand routines and orders of events, it takes well into elementary school for them to truly conceptualize time.

3. Name the feelings. Give children words for what they might be feeling. “It’s OK to feel sad or confused right now. Sometimes changes feel hard.”

4. Provide reassurance. Let them know that even though things are changing, they’re still safe and loved.

5. Encourage questions. If you don’t have an answer, it’s OK to say, “I’m not sure, but I’ll find out,” or “We’re figuring this out together.”

Avoidance is a natural instinct, but silence leaves children to fill in the gaps with their imaginations,

which can be scarier than reality. Moreover, when they sense something is different but no one is talking about it, children might feel alone in their confusion. By proactively communicating, you tell them, “I’m here with you.”

Embrace Feelings

Transitions can be emotional and children need space to express their feelings without judgment. When a child cries or lashes out, instead of responding with, “Don’t be sad,” validate the experience by saying, “I see you have big feelings right now. I’m here with you.” Help your child manage these feelings by encouraging active expressions, such as drawing, writing or moving to music.

Transitions can be challenging, but they’re also opportunities to build resilience and deeper connections. Approaching big changes with empathy, proactive communication and an open heart helps children feel more secure and confident to move forward.

Nurturing This Trait Could Bolster Kids’ Confidence

Creative expression not only helps children convey their thoughts and feelings, but it also helps build the self-esteem and resilience needed to navigate life’s complexities. Creativity can even serve as a powerful catalyst for educational, emotional and cognitive growth.

These findings are part of a Crayola-commissioned study conducted by YouGov of 702 6- to 12-year-olds that explored the connection between creativity and the development of essential life skills. The study revealed that when faced with challenges, children most often rely on their own creative ideas rather than depending on others or giving up. This instinct to turn inward for solutions demonstrates a

natural tendency toward creative problem-solving.

More specifically, the study found 92% of participants believe being creative boosts their confidence, and 6 in 10 said participating in a creative activity gives them a sense of pride. What’s more, 65% of children shared that engaging in a creative activity makes them feel happy and excited to participate.

“Creative activities help children recognize their unique talents and develop a deeper belief in their abilities – giving children an incredible sense of joy and accomplishment,” said Cheri Sterman, senior director of education, Crayola. “By prioritizing creativity, we

Self-Expression: Engaging in creative activities allows children to express their thoughts, feelings and identities. This expression helps them better understand themselves and fosters a sense of ownership over their ideas and creations.

not only enhance children’s immediate happiness and sense of pride but also equip them with the confidence and skills they need for future challenges.”

The study supports the premise of Crayola’s Campaign for Creativity, an advocacy initiative championing the importance of childhood creativity as a critical life skill that empowers kids to reach their full potential and encouraging adults to nurture that creativity.

Parents and caregivers play a critical role in incorporating creative moments into their child’s day, whether it’s in a traditional form of artwork or reflected in a wide range of other activities, including storytelling, drama, dance, music and even sports.

Notably, more than half of survey participants (53%) shared they wished they could spend more time expressing themselves creatively with a parent or caretaker.

“Engaging in creative activities together is a powerful way for parents and children to strengthen their bond while helping children grow into confident, capable individuals,” Sterman said.

As a parent, you can tap into programs such as Crayola Creativity Week to gather ideas and inspiration for nurturing creativity that promotes development of essential life skills, including:

Confidence: Sparking creative moments with kids allows them to build their confidence through self-expression, idea exploration and problem solving. This, in turn, empowers them to tackle challenges, think independently and develop resilience.

Problem Solving: In the study, children reported often turning to their own creative ideas to face challenges. Fostering creative problem-solving empowers children to navigate obstacles independently.

Self-Esteem: When children feel free to create without fear of judgment, they develop a sense of accomplishment and pride in their work, which can strengthen their self-esteem. Creative activities also help them recognize their unique talents and develop a deeper belief in their abilities.

Creative Capacity: The act of creating something can empower children. When they conceptualize and execute their ideas, they realize they have the skills to turn their thoughts into reality.

Resilience: The creative process involves experimentation and failure. Children learn that setbacks are part of learning, which enhances their resilience. This experience fosters a belief in their ability to bounce back and tackle future challenges independently. The Bay Area chapter event, led by Ekal board member Mahesh Navani, on November 9 highlighted the challenges faced by India’s rural and tribal communities. Subra Dravida, President of Ekal USA, shared that more than 100 million people in tribal areas have minimal access to resources, with 88,000 villages lacking healthcare and facing severe poverty and a digital divide.

He emphasized Ekal’s mission to empower changemakers by bringing literacy, health-

care, and economic prosperity through over 80,000 one-teacher schools and Integrated Village Development (IVD) programs.

The keynote speakers commended Ekal’s impact. Majumdar praised the organization for its commitment to future generations, while McMaster emphasized the strength of the India-U.S. relationship. Oberoi described his support for Ekal as a “karmic investment,” urging others to join.

Generous pledges came from donors such as Radhi and Girish Navani, Dr. Kavita Navani, and Dr. Rajesh Dharampuriya, among others.

Young entrepreneur Aakash Prasad increased his pledge, while Bay Area donors Ken Bahl and Kamlesh Shah doubled their contributions. The event also featured stories of Ekal’s impact, gourmet dining by chef Gaurav Anand, and entertainment by rapper Arun Saigal and beatboxer Vinith Johnson.

Why A Nation Of 1.45 billion Wants More children

Last year, India nudged past China to become the world’s most populous country, according to UN estimates.

With nearly 1.45 billion people now, you’d think the country would be quiet about having more children. But guess what? The chatter has suddenly picked up.

Leaders of two southern states –Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu – have recently advocated more children.

Andhra Pradesh is mulling providing incentives, citing low fertility rates and ageing population. The state also scrapped its “two-child policy” for local body elections, and reports say neighbouring Telangana may soon do the same. Next-door Tamil Nadu is also making similar, more exaggerated, noises.

India’s fertility rate has fallen substantially - from 5.7 births per woman in 1950 to the current rate of two.

Fertility rates have fallen below the replacement level of two births per woman in 17 of the 29 states and territories. (A replacement level is one at which new births are sufficient to maintain a stable population.)

The five southern Indian states lead India’s demographic transition, achieving replacement-level fertility well ahead of others. Kerala reached the milestone in 1988, Tamil Nadu in 1993, and the rest by the mid-2000s.

India’s fertility rate has fallen substantially in recent decades Today, the five southern states have total fertility rates below 1.6, with Karnataka at 1.6 and Tamil Nadu at 1.4. In other words, fertility rates in these states match or are less than many European countries.

But these states fear that India’s shifting demographics with varying population shares between

states, will significantly impact electoral representation and state wise-allocation of parliamentary seats and federal revenues.

“They fear being penalised for their effective population control policies, despite being better economic performers and contributing significantly to federal revenues,”

ing driven by declining fertility rates. While countries like France and Sweden took 120 and 80 years respectively to double their aging

India’s rapid ageing is being driven by declining fertility rates

Srinivas Goli, a professor of demography at the International Institute for Population Sciences, told the BBC.

Southern states are also grappling with another major concern as India prepares for its first delimitation of electoral seats in 2026 - the first since 1976.

This exercise will redraw electoral boundaries to reflect population shifts, likely reducing parliamentary seats for the economically prosperous southern states. As federal revenues are allocated based on state populations, many fear this could deepen their financial struggles and limit policy-making freedom.

Demographers KS James and Shubhra Kriti project that populous northern states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar stand to gain more seats from delimitation, while southern states such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh could face losses, further shifting political representation.

Many, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have hinted that changes to fiscal shares and parliamentary seat allocations will not be rushed through.

“As a demographer, I don’t think states should be overly concerned about these issues. They can be resolved through constructive negotiations between federal and state governments,” says Mr Goli. “My concern lies elsewhere.”

The key challenge, according to demographers, is India’s rapid age-

population from 7% to 14%, India is expected to reach this milestone in just 28 years, says Mr Goli.

This accelerated ageing is tied to India’s unique success in fertility decline. In most countries, improved living standards, education, and urbanisation naturally lower fertility as child survival improves.

But in India, fertility rates fell rapidly despite modest socio-economic progress, thanks to aggressive family welfare programmes that promoted small families through targets, incentives, and disincentives.

The unintended consequence? Take Andhra Pradesh, for instance. Its fertility rate is 1.5, on par with Sweden, but its per capita income is 28 times lower, says Mr Goli. With mounting debt and limited resources, can states like these support higher pensions or social security for a rapidly aging population?

Consider this. More than 40% of elderly Indians (60+ years) belong to the poorest wealth quintile - the bottom 20% of a population in terms of wealth distribution, according to United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)’s latest India Ageing Report.

In other words, Mr Goli says, “India is getting old before getting rich”.

Fewer children also mean a rising old-age dependency ratio, leaving fewer caregivers for an expanding elderly demographic. Demographers warn that India’s healthcare, community centres and old-age homes are unprepared for this shift.

Urbanisation, migration, and changing labour markets are further eroding traditional family supportIndia’s strong point - leaving more elderly people behind.

While migration from populous to less populous states can ease the working-age gap, it also sparks anti-migration anxieties. “Robust investments in prevention, palliative care, and social infrastructure are urgently needed to look after the ageing,” says Mr Goli.

As if the southern states’ concerns weren’t enough, earlier this month, the chief of the Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (National Volunteers’ Organisation), the ideological backbone of Mr Modi’s BJP - urged couples to have at least three children to secure India’s future.

“According to population science, when growth falls below 2.1, a society perishes on its own. Nobody destroys it,” Mohan Bhagwat reportedly said at a recent meeting.

While Mr Bhagwat’s concerns may have some basis, they are not entirely accurate, say demographers. Tim Dyson, a demographer at the London School of Economics, told the BBC that after a decade or two, continuing “very low levels of fertility will lead to rapid population decline”.

A fertility rate of 1.8 births per woman leads to a slow, manageable population decline. But a rate of 1.6 or lower could trigger “rapid, unmanageable population decline”.

A school in Kerala with few students - the state reached replacement-level fertility in 1988

“Smaller numbers of people will enter the reproductive - and main working - ages, and this will be socially, politically and economically

disastrous. This is a demographic process and it is extremely difficult to reverse,” says Mr Dyson.

This is already happening in some countries.

In May, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared the country’s record-low birth rate a “national emergency” and announced plans for a dedicated government ministry. Greece’s fertility rate has plummeted to 1.3, half of what it was in 1950, sparking warnings from Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis about an “existential” population threat.

But demographers say that urging people to have more children is futile. “Considering the societal shifts, including the significant reduction in gender disparities as women’s lives have become increasingly similar to those of men, this trend is unlikely to reverse,” says Mr Dyson.

For Indian states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala, grappling with a declining workforce, the key question is: who will step in to fill the gap?

Developed countries, unable to reverse declining fertility, are focusing on healthy and active ageingprolonging working life by five to seven years and enhancing productivity in older populations. Demographers say India will need to extend retirement ages meaningfully, and policies must prioritise increasing healthy years through better health screenings, and stronger social security to ensure an active and productive older population - a potential “silver dividend”.

India must also leverage its demographic dividend better - economic growth that occurs when a country has a large, working-age population. Mr Goli believes there’s a window of opportunity until 2047 to boost the economy, create jobs for the working-age population, and allocate resources for the ageing. “We’re only reaping 15-20% of the dividend - we can do much better,” he says. How SAIVA Volunteers Support Hospital Patients Through Handmade Gifts

(Continued From Page 01)

Illness and hospital stays can be isolating, but with our gifts, we’re able to remind patients that they’re not alone.

Knowing that our small acts of kindness can make a difference is incredibly rewarding and inspiring.

Volunteering with SAIVA has shown me the power of serving others with a pure heart and a willing spirit. Through our work, we’re not only helping those in need but also becoming better people ourselves.

For anyone looking to make a difference, SAIVA is a place where faith, compassion, and action come together to create a meaningful impact.

One of our volunteers shares their experience

“Volunteering has taught me that giving back to others can change lives, including our own. I joined SAIVA, a non-profit, Hindu-inspired volunteer organization dedicated to supporting people in need.

SAIVA, which stands for South Asians’ International Volunteer Association, is built around the core values of kindness and compassion – values central to the Hindu faith.

As part of SAIVA, we work together to create heartfelt gifts for patients in hospitals, spreading positivity and hope to people facing some of the toughest times in their lives.”

The Heart of SAIVA’s Mission

SAIVA’s mission is to serve those in need by combining faith, community, and compassion. Though rooted in Hindu principles, SAIVA’s work is open to anyone, regardless of background or belief. SAIVA volunteers believe in “seva,” a Sanskrit word that means selfless service, and that’s exactly what we aim to do.

By creating and delivering gifts to hospital patients, we’re doing

more than just offering a thoughtful gesture; we’re trying to bring a little light to people who are going through hard times.

Making Gifts, Making a Difference

One of the ways SAIVA volunteers support patients is by crafting handmade gifts to brighten up hospital rooms.

We create gift bags filled with things like cozy socks, blankets, art supplies, inspirational cards,

and even handmade crafts.

There was one event that SAIVA has done recently for leukemia patients at The Apple Campus in Austin on 11/5/24, where we made blankets and bracelets to provide them.

The idea is to make something that can provide comfort and bring a smile to someone’s face, reminding them that there are people out there who care deeply about their well-being.

These gifts might seem small, but for a patient spending days or even months in the hospital, they can mean the world.

Creating these gifts is also an amazing experience for us volunteers.

We meet regularly to work on them together, whether it’s decorating bags, making crafts, or writing personal notes.

Every item we make is carefully chosen and packed, knowing that it has the power to lift someone’s spirits.

Faith in Action: Serving Through Seva

As a Hindu organization, SAIVA is dedicated to putting the teachings of our faith into action. Hinduism emphasizes compassion, empathy, and service to others, and SAIVA’s work is a beautiful example of these values in action.

Through “seva,” we learn that helping others isn’t just an act of kindness – it’s a way to honor our beliefs and create positive change in the world around us.

Our volunteering also helps break stereotypes. People sometimes think religious groups are only about rituals, but SAIVA shows that religion can inspire us to serve.

Through SAIVA, we’re connecting with our faith on a deeper level and realizing that one of the most powerful ways to express it is by sup-

porting others, regardless of their background.

Community and Connection

Volunteering with SAIVA isn’t just about giving back; it’s also about creating community. We’re a group of people of all ages who want to make a difference.

Together, we share stories, learn from each other, and form strong bonds.

We’re united by a common goal: to bring hope and positivity to those in need.

And as young volunteers, we get to learn valuable lessons about empathy, teamwork, and leadership.

SAIVA always appreciates the commitment of volunteers. We are always looking for more people to join us!

Why It’s Harder Than Ever To Make An Appointment With Your Doctor

Americans face unprecedented wait times to see their doctors. This squeeze is particularly acute in primary care, but is also being felt in specialties like neurology, psychiatry and OB/GYN.

According to the American Medical Association (AMA), here are the top reasons why it’s harder than ever to be seen by a health care provider:

1. Not enough doctors. With the U.S. population growing and aging, the need for physicians continues to grow. Yet, according to the American Association of Medical Colleges, the physician shortage is projected to reach 86,000 by 2036.

2. A broken Medicare system. With an aging population and more Medicare patients on the horizon, the Medicare system needs significant reform. Today, Medicare pays physicians nearly 30% less than it did in 2001, when adjusted for inflation. So while the overhead costs of running a practice—equipment,

office space, staff salaries—have all soared, payment for caring for Medicare patients has decreased dramatically, making running a practice extremely challenging.

“Physicians have shouldered the burden of a broken Medicare payment system for far too long. Especially in small, independent practices, and practices in rural and underserved areas, physicians have been forced to cut costs, eliminate

staff, or limit the number of Medicare patients we see,” says Bruce A. Scott, M.D., president of the AMA.

“These are steps we take simply to keep the doors open and the lights on. But unfortunately, because of this dysfunction, all patients—not just Medicare patients—are put at risk when our flawed and outdated payment system forces physicians to close their practices.”

3. Administrative burdens. Increasing bureaucracy and administrative barriers, such as prior authorization, consume significant time for physicians. Doctors today, on average, spend two hours on paperwork for every one hour they spend with patients.

4. Backlog and burnout. One of the ultimate legacies of COVID-19 is a backlog of services and screenings put off during the pandemic, now offered by fewer providers.

Two in three doctors admitted to experiencing burnout during the pandemic, according to a survey from the AMA, the Mayo Clinic and Stanford Medicine.

That’s the highest level of burnout ever recorded by the AMA. One in five physicians surveyed during the pandemic said they planned to leave medicine within the next

two years, while one in three said they’d cut back on their hours.

While there is indeed a crisis in care, the AMA says that there are solutions to address the problem. They include:

• Fixing the broken Medicare payment system. The Medicare Payment Advisory Committee has called for connecting physician payment to the Medicare Economic Index, which would ensure rising practice costs do not continue to overwhelm what Medicare pays.

• Adding voices to the chorus of patients and physicians calling for reform. Those concerned about this problem and worried about continued access to their physician, can visit FixMedicareNow.org.

“It is imperative that we take steps as a country to help all patients get the high-quality care they need and to ensure physicians can continue to deliver it,” says Dr. Scott. (State Point)

Diaspora Remits Billions Of Dollars Helping Indian Economy

India has once again emerged as the world’s largest recipient of remittances, with a record-breaking $129 billion flowing into the country in 2024, according to World Bank data.

This significant figure highlights the crucial role of India’s vast diaspora and its integral contribution to the nation’s economic framework.

The importance of remittances in India’s economy is underscored by the fact that this inflow far exceeded the country’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), which stood at $62 billion as of the September quarter and even surpassed India’s defense budget by over $55 billion.

To put it in perspective, India’s remittances are nearly equivalent to the combined annual budgets of neighboring nations, Pakistan ($67 billion) and Bangladesh ($68 billion).

Growth

India has seen a staggering 57 percent growth in remittance inflows over the past decade, totaling $982 billion between 2014 and 2024.

From receiving $70 billion in 2014, the country has steadily seen the numbers climb, crossing the $100 billion mark in 2021, and now achieving this all-time high. Remarkably, even during the global downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, India secured $83 billion in remittances in 2020, highlighting the resilience of the flow.

IACCT has worked with Census Bureau and broad swath of various communities and work on census to ensure proper count of population demographics and thus helping resultant funding to cities , counties and state.

India’s $129 billion in remittance inflows far outpaced other countries. Mexico came in second with $68 billion, followed by China ($48 billion), the Philippines ($40 billion), and Pakistan ($33 billion).

This positions India as a global leader, reflecting the strength and resilience of the Indian expatriate community in high-income countries, particularly in the United States.

The recovery of job markets, especially in the U.S., has been a critical factor in the surge. Foreign-born workers in the U.S. saw employment levels rise by 11 percent above pre-pandemic figures, driving strong remittance flows back to India.

Impact on India’s Economy

Remittances have become a lifeline for many Indian families, contributing to poverty alleviation, healthcare, education, and financial inclusion.

These funds offer financial stability and security, especially during times of economic uncertainty.

In fact, they continue to be a vital source of foreign exchange for India, outpacing even FDI in their significance.

“India’s diaspora continues to be a cornerstone of the nation’s economic resilience,” remarked a World Bank economist, highlighting how crucial these remittances are to sustaining the country’s growth and development. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

R.Ashwin Was One Of India’s Legends; Stunning Retirement Raises Questions

India-West News Desk

CHENNAI – Ravichandran Ashwin, one of cricket’s most celebrated spinners, stunned the cricketing world on December 18 with an unexpected announcement of his retirement, leaving fans and experts grappling with the abruptness of his decision.

The 38-year-old’s departure, amid a Test series against Australia, has sparked both admiration and debate.

Known for his innovative bowling and sharp cricketing mind, Ashwin’s retirement has prompted widespread tributes, with teammates, cricket legends, and fans hailing his contributions to the sport.

However, the timing of his decision raised eyebrows, especially with two matches still remaining in the series.

The BBC pointed out mid-series retirements aren’t unprecedented in Indian cricket.

In 2014, MS Dhoni retired from Test cricket mid-series in Australia. Still, it said, Ashwin’s decision has sparked speculation – was it age, fatigue, form, or frustration with team selection that prompted his exit?

Ashwin had been sidelined during the ongoing Australia tour, with Washington Sundar playing the first Test and Ravindra Jadeja taking the third, despite Ashwin featuring in the second.

This could have signaled to him that he was no longer the firstchoice spinner.

Regardless of the circumstances,

Ashwin leaves behind an extraordinary legacy, the BBC said in its report, praising him and documenting his achievements.

With 537 Test wickets in 106 Tests and six centuries, he ranks among cricket’s all-time greats.

His mastery of the ‘doosra’ and ‘carrom ball’ has redefined offspin bowling, inspiring generations of cricketers worldwide.

Ashwin’s career statistics place him as the fourth-highest wickettaking spinner.

He is also seventh on the list of alltime wicket-takers.

As an engineer, he continuously

evolved, adding variations to his bowling and using his analytical skills to outfox batsmen, the BBC said.

As an all-rounder, Ashwin scored 3,503 runs, including six centuries, often stepping up in critical moments.

A fiercely independent thinker, he made waves by running out England’s Jos Buttler in the 2019 IPL, sparking global debate and challenging conventional cricketing practices.

Ashwin’s retirement, coming just months after heading to Australia as India’s premier spinner, has left unanswered questions and a void that will be hard to fill, as the cricketing world adjusts to the end of a remarkable era.

UN Gives Top Environmental Award To Madhav Gadgil

India-West News Desk

NEW DELHI – Veteran Indian ecologist Madhav Gadgil (82) was awarded the prestigious Champions of Earth award by the United Nations (UN) on December 10 for Lifetime Achievement in conservation and protection of marginalized communities. He is the only Indian among six global awardees this year, recognized for their contributions to environmental protection.

Gadgil’s pioneering efforts to conserve India’s ecologically sensitive Western Ghats earned him global acclaim. Spanning six states, the Western Ghats is one of the world’s 36 biodiversity hotspots and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

As chair of the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Committee in 2010, Madhav Gadgil recommended declaring the region an ecologi-

Gukesh,18, Makes History As Youngest Ever World Chess Champion

India-West News Desk

SINGAPORE – Indian Grandmaster D. Gukesh achieved a historic milestone on December 12, becoming the youngest-ever world chess champion at the age of 18. He dethroned defending champion Ding Liren of China in a gripping final game of the 2024 World Chess Championship held in Singapore. The victory, secured after 58 intense moves in a four-hour match, made Gukesh only the second Indian to claim the prestigious title after the legendary Viswanathan Anand. Gukesh clinched the championship with a score of 7.5 to Liren’s 6.5, earning him a major share of the $2.5 million prize purse. His triumph also broke a decades-old record set by Garry Kasparov, who had been the youngest world champion at 22 in 1985.

The Rise of a Chess Prodigy

Born on May 29, 2006, in Chennai to a Telugu family, Gukesh Dommaraju’s journey to chess greatness began at the age of seven. His father, Dr. Rajinikanth, an ENT surgeon, and his mother, Dr. Padma, a microbiologist, nurtured his early interest in the game. What started as a casual hobby—one-hour sessions three days a week—quickly turned into a full-fledged passion as Gukesh’s talent became evident in local tournaments.

His breakthrough came in 2015 when he won the Under-9 Asian School Chess Championship, followed by a title in the Under-12 World Youth Chess Championship in 2018.

That same year, he swept five gold medals at the Asian Youth Chess Championships, showcasing his dominance across rapid, blitz, and classical formats.

In March 2017, Gukesh earned the title of International Master, and by December 2019, at just 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days, he became the third-youngest Grandmaster in history.

Breaking Barriers

The year 2023 cemented Gukesh’s place among the chess elite. In August, he became the youngest player to achieve a rating of 2750, and by September, he surpassed Viswanathan Anand to become the topranked Indian chess player, ending Anand’s 37-year reign. He also played a pivotal role in leading India to its first-ever Chess Olympiad gold medal, alongside teammates Arjun Erigaisi, R. Praggnanandhaa, Pentala Harikrishna, and Vidit Gujrathi. In early 2024, Gukesh made headlines again as the youngest-ever winner of the Candidates Tournament, earning him a seat at the World Championship against Ding Liren.

A Momentous Win

The World Championship was a roller-coaster affair. Gukesh took an early lead with wins in Games 3 and 11, while Liren equalized with victories in Games 1 and 12. Heading into the decisive 14th game, the match was tied, but Gukesh’s precision and resilience sealed the victory, avoiding the need for tiebreaks.

Reacting to his historic win, the typically reserved teenager celebrated with an uncharacteristic grin and a triumphant raising of his arms. His achievement not only places him among the greatest in the chess world but also signals the arrival of a new era in Indian chess, as he follows in the footsteps of his idol, Viswanathan Anand. With this victory, Gukesh becomes the 18th world chess champion, an extraordinary accomplishment for someone who just a year ago was making headlines for breaking records and pushing boundaries.

His journey from a curious child prodigy to a global chess icon serves as an inspiration for aspiring players worldwide. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)
