gration Services data shows Indians represent the majority of H-1B visa. In 2023 , 279,000 of the 386,000 H-1B visas were awarded to Indian nationals. Chinese were way behind with just over 11% of the total thanks in part to the Biden administration’s hostility to the nation.

Miller’s hostility toward H-1B visas is well-documented, dating back to his work under Senator Jeff Sessions.

What Trump’s Immigration Plans Mean For The US

President-elect Donald Trump has promised to launch the largest deportation program in U.S. history. This was estimated by Vice President-elect JD Vance to involve one million removals yearly. Can

the U.S. afford these policies? What do these crackdowns mean for undocumented and legal immigrants?

Mass deportation

Based on Census data surveys, there are an estimated 11.7 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. as of July 2023 — about 3.5% of the total population, and up 800,000 from the previous July.

The all-time peak is 12 million immigrants, reached in 2008. (Continued On Page 18)

Wow! What an amazing way to spend an afternoon in Austin, Texas, my hometown, today (11/16/2024)! This is the only thought that crosses my mind as I sit down to type this.

The last few weeks have been a hectic but fun ride, getting ready to drive to our performance at the 9th Annual Austin Sister City International’s Festival at the Austin Public Library.

This event is a celebration of Austin’s bond with all its “sister” cities and the cultural connection that the communities share. Austin Sister City endeavor which began in 1956 during the presidency of D. Eisenhower, is still going strong today.

How To Plan For Retirement

Being financially secure in retirement starts while you’re still working. Because you likely don’t want to remain in the workforce forever, creating a plan can help ensure you’re confident in living comfortably in retirement when the time comes.

Retirement plans and financial aspirations are deeply personal and often tied to family life, ambitions and values, meaning it’s entirely up to you when to start planning and saving for your post-work years.

However, the worrying reality is that many households across the U.S. don’t feel in control of their finances.

According to a study from World Financial Group, 11% of households have “forfeited contributions to their retirement accounts,” a decision that will have an impact later in life.

To ensure you’re prepared, consider these steps to plan for retirement.

Understand When You Can Retire and How Much Money You Will Need

Because nearly everyone has different goals for retirement, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to when and how much money you’ll need to stop working.

Assess your unique situation – including all your forms of income, assets and savings – and calculate what you’ll need to maintain your standard of living and cover expenses, including any discretionary spending, in retirement.

Choose an Appropriate Retirement

Plan for Your Needs

In addition to figuring out how much you should save, having the right savings vehicle is an important consideration.

A good place to start is an employer-sponsored retirement plan with fund-matching, such as a 401(k).

If a workplace retirement plan is not available, consider setting aside money for retirement through an IRA that provides access to a range of investments, including stocks,

bonds and mutual funds. Some insurance products may also provide benefits during retirement, such as life insurance coverage, supplemental income and tax advantages.

Take Stock of Your Current Assets

Your current assets include more than just what’s in your bank account. Beyond your paycheck, factor in real estate, investment accounts and any insurance policies you may have.

If you need help understanding your finances, take a financial literacy quiz to test your knowledge and then consider meeting with a financial services expert.

Create a Retirement Budget and Look at Ways to Reduce Expenses

Your retirement budget should look similar to yours while still part of the workforce.

Start by accounting for how much money is coming in and how much is going out toward fixed expenses like utilities, cellphone bills, insur-

ance premiums, rent or mortgage and vehicle payments then track other expenses like groceries, gasoline and other spending toward non-essentials like entertainment and clothing.

From there, look for ways to cut expenses to stretch your funds further, such as canceling a streaming service, dining out less or skipping a new movie release.

Account for Unexpected Expenses

Before retirement, consider how you’d handle unexpected expenses such as a medical emergency, home or vehicle repair or moving into an assisted living facility.

Suppose you don’t have the appropriate health and homeowner’s insurance coverage.

In that case, you may be covering those costs out-of-pocket, which could limit or hinder your financial flexibility on a fixed income.

How Clinical Trials Help Fight Disease

Clinical trials are necessary for finding new ways of preventing, detecting or treating diseases, but often, limited participation creates challenges for meeting clinical trial goals.

Despite decades of effort and strategies to identify and address barriers to recruiting and enrolling study participants, recruitment challenges persist, particularly among women, older adults and diverse patient populations.

“Potential study participants are reluctant to get involved for a variety of reasons, including the time commitment, lack of clarity regarding safeguards for their well-being and concerns about how their medical condition will be handled during the study,” said Alan Moss, MD, chief scientific officer with the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, the leading nonprofit organization focused on both research and support of people living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

“Taking part in a clinical trial gives patients an opportunity to access new therapies and can help shape future treatment, including how diseases are diagnosed, treated and even prevented.”

Learning more about the important role clinical trials play in health care may ultimately help you or someone you love find a new treatment or manage a condition, such as IBD, more effectively.

Importance of Clinical Trials

Finding a treatment that relieves patients’ symptoms and helps induce and maintain remission is im-

portant. However, these treatments wouldn’t be available without clinical trials. In fact, all U.S.

Food & Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medicines currently available on the market are the result of clinical trials and the patients who participated in them. When enrollment targets aren’t reached due to low patient participation, there may be delays in the drug approval process.

What You Should Know

There are plenty of reasons to consider participating in a clinical trial, especially if you’re looking for further options to treat a serious condition.

Taking part in a clinical trial is a big step, so it’s important to be well-informed.

• Safety: Investigational treatments must be studied extensively before the FDA will approve them. Each trial follows thorough protocols to ensure the health and safety of its participants. Additionally, patients are followed continuously throughout a trial to monitor their health.

• Eligibility: Who can participate in a clinical trial depends greatly on the specific limits of the study. Each clinical trial has its own goals to achieve, which means different trials have different criteria for patients to meet in order to enroll.

Some trials are for patients who have moderate to severe disease and others may seek patients with mild disease. Other trials look for patients without any diagnosis. Prior to enrolling in a trial, a research

coordinator will review your complete medical history to see if you meet the inclusion criteria.

• Treatment: When you decide to enroll in a clinical trial, you may have access to the study drug as a form of treatment. Typically, participants will not know if they are receiving the study drug during the trial.

This helps reduce potential biases and ensures the fairness of the trial. However, all participants are monitored closely.

If there is any change in your medical condition while participating in the study, the research staff will inform you immediately and discuss the situation.

• Cost: The majority of clinical trials are federally or privately funded, so there is typically no cost to participants. While federal law requires most health insurance plans to cover the majority of routine patient care costs associated with clinical trials, there are some costs you may incur, such as travel, gas, parking, child care and time away

from work. Trial sponsors commonly cover these costs, as well as any non-routine patient care that isn’t covered by insurance.

However, it’s a good idea to get a clear understanding of how the trial you’re considering would handle these expenses.

• Leaving the study: At any point you wish to drop out of the trial, you can, and for any reason. In that case, it’s common for a research coordinator to ask you to complete a final visit and schedule follow-up visits, if needed, to ensure you do not experience any side effects.

How to Learn More

If you’re interested in participating in a clinical trial, it’s important to go to trusted sources to learn more and ask questions.

For example, the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation can point you toward clinical trial opportunities. Your doctor’s office can also be a good source of information about local studies.

If you’re hesitant about joining a trial involving a treatment but are eager to help, you might consider other types of research studies, such as prevention, diagnostic, screening or quality of life trials instead.

Once you identify a clinical trial that interests you and you may be eligible for, contact the research coordinator to learn more. You’ll also want to discuss the study in greater detail with your doctor and talk to loved ones within your support system who may have questions or helpful insight to consider.

Visit crohnscolitisfoundation.org/ clinical-trials-community to learn more about IBD clinical trials and find opportunities near you.

Understanding IBD

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affects nearly 1 in 100 people living in the United States, according to a study led by the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation. IBD is an umbrella term used to describe disorders that cause chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

Symptoms include diarrhea, as well as abdominal pain, nausea, fever, loss of appetite, fatigue and, at times, rectal bleeding. No single test can confirm IBD, which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

There are currently no cures for IBD. Medication and managing your diet and nutrition are two of the most common treatment recommendations.

Older Adults Can Prevent Slips, Trips And Falls With These Doctors’ Tips

Among older Americans, falls are the number one cause of injuries and death from injury, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Not only are seniors more at risk

for falls, but when they do fall, they are at a greater risk for injuries, hospitalization and complications. Medical experts say that for people of all ages, a ground-up approach to fall prevention starts with healthy feet.

“Painful foot conditions, such as osteoarthritis, calluses, bunions, hammertoes and diabetes complications, can make it difficult to maintain balance and coordination when walking or standing,” says Bryn J. Laubacher, DPM, FAC-

A Better Path To Bladder Cancer Detection: The Role Of Blue Light Cystoscopy

When John noticed blood in his urine, he consulted his doctor and was quickly referred to a urologist. (John is a composite character, based on the experiences of reallife patients.)

John was diagnosed with bladder cancer using White Light Cystoscopy (WLC), a simple procedure for diagnosing non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). While this is the traditional diagnostic approach in most urology offices, it has limitations that can affect patient outcomes.

With WLC, it can be difficult to detect small lesions or flat lesions, such as carcinoma in situ (CIS). These missed tumors create the potential for cancer recurrence and the need for multiple transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TURBT) procedures.

John, like many patients who receive WLC, had residual tumors after his initial TURBT and underwent multiple procedures to remove them. John’s story is common and highlights the importance of accurate detection in early-stage

bladder cancer. Fortunately, an enhanced procedure exists that significantly improves the visibility of bladder cancer lesions, especially hard-to-detect tumors like CIS.

Blue Light Cystoscopy (BLC) uses an FDA-approved imaging agent— not a dye—that makes cancer cells glow bright pink under blue light.

The BLC procedure uses both white and blue lights to help achieve the best possible detection results. When fewer tumors are missed, it reduces the need for repeat procedures, while also offering a more complete picture of the tumor situation.

This information can lead to a more accurate diagnosis and inform more appropriate treatment moving forward. Patients diagnosed with bladder cancer should be aware that BLC is not available in all hospitals and medical centers, so patients may need to do some research to find a urologist who offers this procedure.

BLC also requires the administra-

tion of the imaging agent, which means patients must arrive at least one hour before the procedure to be prepped.

After John’s experiences with WLC, he reached out to a urologist who offers the BLC enhanced detection option.

Using BLC, his urologist identified additional tumors, and the resulting more-precise diagnosis improved his follow-up care and required fewer surgeries down the line. As John learned, BLC at the outset could have limited his cycle of missed tumors and repeated surgeries.

According to medical experts, patients should not have to wait until their second or third TURBT to receive the BLC enhanced detection option.

Better tumor detection has the potential to provide better data to drive more accurate diagnosis. The sooner a patient is properly diagnosed, the sooner the best possible treatment can be administered.

While WLC remains a valuable tool, incorporating BLC enhances the process and, as a result, can lead to improved detection that can drive improved outcomes for bladder cancer patients.

Given the many advantages of Blue Light Cystoscopy in detecting NMIBC tumors, patients should consider exploring this option and speaking with their urologist about it. FAS, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ACFAS).

“Compounding the issue is that when you are suffering from a painful foot condition, it can be more difficult to engage in the strength and balance exercises that ultimately reduce fall risk.”

Experts say that eliminating foot pain can lessen one’s chances of experiencing a life-altering fall.

That’s why the foot and ankle surgeons of ACFAS offer these steps for keeping feet and ankles strong and healthy:

Don’t ignore pain: Foot pain is not just a normal consequence of aging, so don’t ignore aching and suffering or resign yourself to it.

You likely have a treatable condition. See a foot and ankle surgeon when you experience pain for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Examine your feet: Regularly inspect your feet. If you notice any bumps, lumps or other changes, make an appointment with your foot and ankle surgeon for evaluation.

Exercise: Simple stretching exercises can help you maintain strength and mobility in your feet and ankles, as well as provide pain relief. Talk to your physician about appropriate exercises for you.

Protect: Wear cushioned insoles or

any special footwear you are prescribed, along with comfortable, well-fitting and supportive shoes, every day – even around the house.

Consider advanced options: Know that at times, surgery is the most appropriate treatment for a given condition. Fortunately, many surgical techniques today can be performed on an outpatient basis. There are also more options than ever before.

According to Dr. Laubacher, new medical technologies and groundbreaking surgical interventions, such as bioengineered scaffolding for reconstructive surgery, minimally invasive techniques and stem cell regeneration, are helping patients restore functionality and get back to normal faster than ever before,

For more ways to keep feet and ankles healthy and prevent falls, and to find a foot and ankle surgeon near you, visit FootHealthFacts. org, the ACFAS patient education website.

Foot and ankle surgeons are experts in providing both conservative care as well as surgical approaches to foot and ankle healthcare.

“Remember, just one fall can have a major impact on a person’s independence and quality of life.

That’s why it’s so important to prevent falls by taking care of your feet and ankles,” says Dr. Laubacher. (StatePoint)

Supporting The Military’s Hurricane Relief Efforts

As local communities throughout the southeast region of the United States coped with the damage caused by recent hurricanes, National Guard, Coast Guard and additional activeduty service members rescued people and pets, cleared roads, and distributed needed supplies.

These service members not only left their loved ones behind to tackle stressful disaster response missions, but many were also members of impacted communities, making their response efforts all the more challenging.

of challenging work. In addition to offering classic

ricane, having a space where responding service members can access air conditioning, a cold glass of water or a hot meal, Wi-Fi and a charging port to reach out to their loved ones is crucial to boosting morale.

This bill sought to prevent most H-1B visa holders from working in the U.S. unless they first spent 10 years abroad and aimed to abolish Optional Practical Training for international students. As always, the USO was there too, providing crucial support to the thousands of military service members responding to the call of duty. Acting as “USO Centers on wheels,” Mobile USO vehicles and the teams that operate them provide service members with a moment of respite after long days

That’s why Mobile USO vehicles access multiple locations over a short period of time, often driving right into areas most affected by the storms, so they can meet the service members where they are.

The generosity of donors and partners gives the USO the flexibility to deploy resources just as service members receive their orders.

Known for his hardline views, Miller is expected to lead efforts aligned with Trump’s stringent immigration agenda, which includes plans for mass deportations, enhanced border security, and expanding immigration detention. Though he doesn’t formally head any government branch, his role places him as Trump’s direct emissary, with significant influence over agency leaders and policy implementation across various departments, that deal directly or indirectly with immigration issues including Homeland Security, Labor, and Justice.

How To Dodge Fraudsters When You’re In Financial Distress

Although fraudsters will prey on anyone, many tactics specifically target those facing financial hardship in the wake of a natural disaster. To help you avoid becoming a victim when you’re most vulnerable, Freddie Mac is providing these tips and insights:

Watch Out for Common Disaster-Related Scams

As the intensity of severe weather events increases, understanding common disasterrelated scams can help you avoid them. These include:

High-Interest Loans for Repairs: In this scam, someone may offer to loan you money for home repairs, often at a high interest rate, while you wait for your insurance money.

In return, they ask for a post-dated check, your auto title or your tax refund. Although this may provide short-term relief, it’s an example of predatory lending because the high interest rates could end up costing you more in the long term. Read any contract before signing it, and make sure you understand the total cost of the loan, including its

terms and fees.

Repair Contractor Prepayment: In this scam, your home repair contractor may ask you to sign a “direction to pay form” that allows your insurance company to pay the contractor directly, even before the repair work is completed.

This can leave you vulnerable to incomplete or poor quality work. To avoid this scam,

read your contract carefully and do not authorize the full payment amount until you are satisfied with the final product.

Requests for Financial Information: In this scam, a person claiming to be a government employee or disaster relief professional may request financial information, saying they need it to help you recover from a crisis.

Protect yourself by never giving anyone your personally identifiable information by phone, email, text or in person without confirming their identity.

For example, ask for identification and independently call the entity the person claims to work for. If You’re Struggling to Pay Your Mortgage, Beware of Fraudsters

If you’re struggling to pay your mortgage after a natural disaster or due to other circumstances and you are facing foreclosure, be on the lookout for two common types of fraud. Foreclosure Rescue Fraud: In such a scheme, someone may falsely promise to be able to save your home from foreclosure. The fraudster will commonly:

AFSSA

• Require you to sign the title to your home over to them.

• Ask you to sign unfamiliar documents.

• Ask you to share personal information.

• Charge you rent to stay in your home.

• Offer to pay your delinquent mortgage by purchasing your home.

• Promise that you can repurchase your home when your financial situation improves.

Fraudsters orchestrating these schemes pose as professionals and promise to stop foreclosure, often at a high price.

However, they don’t deliver on their promises. As a result, you could lose the title to your home and be at risk of foreclosure.

Loan Modification Scams: Loan modification scams may operate similarly to foreclosure rescue fraud. In these scams, fraudsters collect an upfront fee and promise to work with your loan servicer on your behalf.

They claim that they can obtain a loan modification that reduces your payments. If someone other than your loan servicer (the company listed on your mortgage statement) offers you mortgage assistance, don’t provide your information.

If you are struggling with your mortgage payment, contact your lender, a certified HUD housing counselor or a housing finance agency.

These trustworthy resources can present you with real options to help avoid foreclosure. Learn more fraud prevention tips by visiting myhome.freddiemac.com.

Unfortunately, fraudsters have made it their business to prey on pain. With the right knowledge, you can help ensure that no one takes advantage of you when you’re down on your luck. (StatePoint)

Government Spending On Babies Is Falling Short, Say Advocates

Ten percent of all U.S. children did not have enough food to keep them healthy in 2022. In the same year, the infant mortality rate increased for the first time in two decades and the rate of child poverty more than doubled.

At a time when children need increased support to prosper, a new analysis of government spending in 2024 indicates that funding for programs benefitting the youngest Americans – those below the age of 3 – is falling short.

“Babies in the Budget 2024” provides a comprehensive analysis of the share of spending allocated to children ages 0–3 across more than 150 government programs in the federal budget.

Published by the bipartisan advocacy organization First Focus on Children, the analysis finds that for the third straight year, the share of federal spending on children ages

0-3 declined, from just 1.98% in fiscal year 2021 to 1.52% in 2024.

On top of that, the small increase in dollars these programs received failed to keep up with inflation, ensuring that support for the nation’s youngest children lags behind the estimated average rise in the cost of living for families.

According to advocates with First Focus on Children and the National Collaborative for Infants & Toddlers (NCIT), President Biden’s fiscal year 2025 budget presents an opportunity to turn the tide.

The president recommends increasing total spending on babies by $36.8 billion and significantly expanding the Child Tax Credit to reach low-income children currently left behind because their parents earn too little.

These changes would increase the money available for babies by al-

most $28 billion in fiscal year 2025 — an inflation-adjusted increase of 630%. The budget proposal would also make vital investments in child care, housing, paid family and medical leave, mental health, nutrition and other areas that impact babies, toddlers and their families.

“Building a healthy, prosperous, and equitable upbringing for our babies translates directly to a healthy, prosperous, and equitable future for our country. Funding choices are just that – choices.

And Congress and the Administration have the power to choose to support the well-being of chil-

dren,” says Bruce Lesley, president of First Focus on Children.

To view the full report and to learn more, visit firstfocus.org.

“Our country can and must do more to make life better for babies, toddlers and families,” said Jennifer Harris, senior health policy advocate for Alabama Arise, a member of the NCIT. “We should strengthen the Child Tax Credit and expand paid leave to help parents make ends meet.

We should invest more in affordable housing and child care to ensure security and stability for our children. And we must close the Medicaid coverage gap in every state so families can afford the health care they need to thrive. Strengthening these family supports is the cornerstone to ensuring a brighter future for our children and our nation.” (StatePoint)

Holiday Advice To Keep Pets Happy And Healthy

While family and friends share gifts and hearty meals during the holidays, pets are there to share snuggles and comfort. This year, make sure you protect the joy of the season by keeping pets safe as you likely introduce new foods, decor and other potential hazards in the home.

Share the holiday cheer with your pets by unwrapping peace of mind with these suggestions from the experts at VCA Animal Hospitals.

Manifest Holiday Mindfulness

Keeping your pets (and yourself) happy and healthy throughout the holiday season isn’t just about the physical. Don’t forget the mental and mindful aspect of care with these fun, easy ways to spread cheer.

• Practice Self-Care Together: Enjoy a “spaw” day with petsafe grooming products, throw a holiday-themed movie night, grab your favorite blanket for a cuddle session or try pet yoga.

• Manifest Happiness: Write five reasons you’re grateful each morning, send holiday notes to those you care about, play interactive games during festivities and put a little extra thought into gift-giving.

• Supercharge Your Calm: Meditate with your pet, unplug from social media to be present with loved ones (including pets), take a deep breath during special moments and accept that some things may go wrong during this hectic season.

• Get Moving: Go for a winter walk, teach your pet a new trick, create an indoor obstacle course, enjoy a playdate at the dog park or introduce your pet to a new toy.

Avoid Toxic Foods and Hazardous Items

Your festivities are sure to be filled with love, laughter and joy, but all that celebrating is likely to include decorations and delicious foods that are harmful to pets.

Pets are often naturally curious and may be attracted to bright, shiny items like candles and decorations. Protect against accidents by keeping decorations like tinsel, ribbon, open-flame candles and fragile ornaments out of reach. Avoid plants like poinsettias, mistletoe, lilies, holly and amaryllis that may be toxic to pets. Be sure to cover or hide exposed electrical cords and exposed Christmas tree water.

Many common festive foods are bad for pets. It may be tough to resist those cute, begging eyes, but

your pet’s health will benefit from your restraint. Keep chocolate, candy, fatty meat and bones, alcohol and exposed trash off the menu for pets.

Stay Prepared

Being prepared is always a good idea for pet owners, but the holiday season especially can be unpredictable with new routines, unfamiliar guests, hazardous foods and more.

Stay safe throughout the festivities and enjoy peace of mind knowing VCA is by your side for those unforeseen moments with access to world-class emergency medicine by providing 50% off an ER exam for all pet owners and free ER exams for CareClub members.

ganized during this hectic time of year. Part of your organizational strategy ahead of the festive season should include your pet’s health and ways you can protect him or her whether you’re celebrating at home or on the go.

Consider this list your holiday cheat sheet with quick, easy ways you can protect pets before, during and after get-togethers.

• Decorate with pet-safe ornaments

• Keep festive plants out of reach

• Put a skirt around your Christmas tree and secure it so it can’t fall over

• Invest in electric candles or menorahs

• Keep dogs inside during get-togethers

• Follow your pet’s regular diet

• Create a quiet space for your pet away from guests

• Check in with your pet to ensure he or she is happy and comfortable

• Thoroughly clean up and pack away any leftovers

Fire Safety Gaps Are A Cause For Alarm

Learning the basics of fire safety is the first step in fighting the dangers of fire—and it just so happens to be the most important. That’s why Kidde, a trusted leader in fire safety for more than 100 years, is on a mission to help protect every moment, for everyone. For the third year in a row, Kidde’s Cause For Alarm campaign is deploying educational materials and lifesaving information to communities nationwide, including vulnerable communities at a higher risk of fire-related incidents.

Every year, fire claims thousands of American lives in homes without working smoke alarms, according to the Office of Fire Prevention and Control. Yet, far too many people think that a fire is something that would never affect their family. In fact, the American Red Cross reports that 40% of people believe they are more likely to win the lottery or get struck by lightning than experience a home fire.

This mindset may be why so many households aren’t taking even the most basic precautions against fires. Data from the American Red Cross shows that only 26% of American families have developed and practiced a home fire escape plan, leaving nearly 74% of families unprepared for a fire emergency.

According to Kidde, here’s how you can better protect your home and the people you love:

1. Ensure you have working smoke alarms in your home and discuss with your children what to do when the smoke alarm sounds.

2. Purchase a Kidde alarm at participating retailers in the United States until the end of November 2024 to not only help protect your household, but to prompt a $1 contribution for alarm donations up to $1,000,000 in total retail value to communities in need.

3. Learn more about fire safety and

how you can protect your family by visiting CauseForAlarm.org. The site features activities, worksheets, a children’s book, a kid-friendly podcast and shareable resources, including a memorable jingle for children titled “Beeps That Last, Get Out Fast.” The catchy jingle was created to help kids easily recall what to do in the event of a house fire. This year, to help further inspire people to prioritize fire safety, Kidde developed the “Living Jingle,” an emotional plea and call to action – directly from the voices of children who have survived house fires, reminding all who listen that the risk of a home fire is real for everyone.

4. Share the “Living Jingle” on social media, tag @KiddeFireSafety and use #CauseForAlarm to help raise awareness. Everyone deserves to feel safe and protected in their homes. By making fire safety a priority, individuals, families and communities can help protect what matters most. (StatePoint)

The Hidden Harm Of Civil Legal Issues

Your landlord is threatening to evict you, while maintenance issues in your apartment complex have been ignored, making it difficult to get to work and pay the bills. That’s a civil legal issue.

You know you’re qualified for veterans or Social Security benefits, but you can’t seem to get through the red tape. That’s a civil legal issue.

The mobile home park where you lease a space for your manufactured home is kicking you out, and you may lose your investment in the home as well as a place to live. That’s a civil legal issue.

A survey from the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) found many Americans who experienced a civil legal matter within the past three years (59%) didn’t seek legal help from an attorney who could have been pivotal in getting their issues resolved.

A misunderstanding found in the

survey is that more than half of American adults (56%) wrongly believe they have a right to a lawyer in a civil case.

In fact, Americans only have a right to a lawyer when they have been accused of a crime. This misperception means some people may end up in civil court at a big disadvantage in a complex legal system because they don’t have legal representation.

Civil legal issues can be life changing. Even though people do not have a right to a lawyer in these cases, free help is available for many low-income people who cannot afford to hire a lawyer.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, LSC supports 130 independent, nonprofit legal aid programs in every state, the District of Columbia and the territories. It launched the Protecting the Promise outreach campaign, aimed at

ensuring legal aid is available to low-income Americans who need it.

Legal aid attorneys help with the most common civil legal issues people in the national survey said they faced in the last three years, even if they didn’t recognize them as legal issues. Those were debt collection (63%), job loss (56%) and issues surrounding natural disasters (52%).

In addition to these issues, legal aid organizations supported by LSC also help with family law issues like divorce, child custody and domestic violence.

Many Americans don’t realize when they could benefit from legal assistance. A significant portion of Americans (1 in 3) who didn’t seek legal help for civil matters in the past three years said they thought they could deal with the problem on their own or didn’t think the problem was serious enough for legal help. Additionally, almost

one-quarter didn’t reach out for legal assistance because they didn’t think an attorney could help with their problems.

More than three-quarters of women didn’t seek legal help when contacted by creditors or collection agencies compared to fewer than half of men who didn’t seek help.

Money is a big barrier. Among those who did not seek legal assistance, nearly one-third did not do so because they were worried about the cost.

Unresolved civil legal issues can pile up, hurting individuals, families and even entire communities. For people with low incomes, getting help can be difficult. Hiring a lawyer can be expensive, and most people don’t know where to start.

To see if you’re eligible for civil legal aid or to find a legal aid organization in your area, visit lsc.gov. Photos courtesy of Shutterstock (Family Features)

Lasers: A Safer Alternative To Weight-Loss Drugs?

Weight-loss drugs have skyrocketed in popularity because of their quick results and use among celebrities and influencers. J.P. Morgan predicts that by 2030, 30 million Americans will use them.

However, some medical providers say the drugs’ hidden health risks may not be worth their benefits.

“Weight loss is so often prescribed to improve health,” said Dr. Cesar Lara, a board-certified medical bariatric physician. “The irony is that many of today’s weight-loss medications bring forth their own set of serious risk factors.”

Hidden risks

A growing number of weight-loss drug users report side effects including nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, fatigue, depression and suicidal ideation.

And because these drugs are relatively new for weight-loss purposes, questions linger about their long-term impacts.

Lara said patients considering the drugs should know their potential side effects and alternative options.

“I would advise any patient of mine who needs or desires to lose weight to investigate safe options, like low-level lasers, and to understand the risks of taking medications that could potentially compromise their health,” Lara said.

Safer alternatives

Low-level lasers are a non-invasive, pain-free

option for people seeking safer weight-loss treatment.

For example, the Emerald Laser, an FDAcleared low-level laser for fat loss and body contouring, is additionally FDA-cleared for treating obesity, making it a good choice for those with a lot of weight to lose. The Zerona, also an FDA-cleared low-level laser for fat loss and body contouring, has overthe-counter clearance for overall body circumference reduction, providing a way to quickly target stubborn areas of fat.

Both lasers create temporary tiny pores in fatty cells to release fat, which the body’s lymphatic system naturally removes. Ultimately, the lasers shrink fat cells without damaging them.

This controlled approach helps ensure optimal results in target areas such as the waist, chest or back and requires no recovery time.

Unlike many other weight-loss treatments, lasers do not elevate plasma lipids, triglycerides or cholesterol. They also don’t cause bruising or swelling.

Fat-loss laser treatments are often available at doctors’ offices, chiropractors, spas, health centers and fitness centers. To find a location near you or to offer a laser service at your business, visit fatlosslasers.com.

When considering your weight-loss options, prioritize safe, non-invasive treatments with no side effects. (StatePoint)

A symbol of Global Friendship At The Austin City Hall

(Continued From Page 01)

Sumit Dasgupta, Unmesh Mayekar and Ben Remirez from Austin along with Vaishali Patkar, Dina Kholkar from Pune on efforts in establishing Pune as Austin’s sister city in 2019.

Since then, members from both cities have worked hard to foster a harmonious and collaborative relationship between the two cities.

This was followed by a Parade of Cultures which was led by the Diversity Band, all the way to the Austin City Hall. I was excited to be a part of this parade and as we all danced and jived towards the City Hall, I was looking forward to a very momentous occasion!

A new landmark sign was unveiled today at the Austin City Hall, which displays the names of Austin’s Sister Cities, with arrows pointing to each city and indicating the distance in miles.

Diversity band along with the Japanese Taiko drums celebrated this achievement with their wonderful drumming, involving fellow Austinities, and passing pedestrians who got totally drawn into this vibrant and colorful event with many of us Diversity Band members.

I am so happy I was part of this joy inducing event- totally unselfish and inclusive in its role!

What happened this afternoon was true display of various people coming together in harmony to do their bit in what is considered to be “world peace”, with no expectation of any rewards in return. I am, at the end of the day, truly grateful for this opportunity.

Evolution Of Smartphone Damage: From Drips To Drops

As smartphones have transformed from simple communication devices to essential tools for navigation, entertainment, productivity, and much more, so too have their vulnerabilities—and the consequences of damage have become more severe.

Now central to how we work, connect, and play, a broken smartphone can significantly disrupt daily life.

For more than 12 years, Allstate Protection Plans has conducted its well-known Breakability Test, in which robots drop, bend, dunk, and fold the latest smartphones to assess their durability.

These tests have uncovered evolving risks, providing valuable insights into each generation’s unique vulnerabilities.

Liquid Damage: From Major Risk to Minor Worry

the iPhone 11 remained functional after being submerged by Allstate Protection Plans’ DunkBot for 30 minutes in 5 feet of water.

Thanks to advancements like IP68 ratings and waterproof casings, modern smartphones, such as the latest Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy can be exposed to water for extended periods without harm.

The Foldable Phone: A Form Factor Comeback

ern smartphones are far from unbreakable.

In recent drop tests, even flagship devices like the Samsung S24 Ultra with its titanium frame and Corning Gorilla Armor shattered after 6-foot falls.

Similarly, the iPhone 16, despite its aluminum sides and ceramic shield, sustained cracked screens and scuffed corners when dropped.

Larger Phones, Larger Problems

In 2014, the iPhone 6 struggled being dunked for just 10 seconds in less than a foot of water.

However, just 5 years later in 2019,

Without waterproofing technology, even a minor spill or accidental drop in water could wreak havoc on a phones internal components. In a 2012 survey, liquid damage accounted for 18% of smartphone damage.

Financial Literacy 101

Financial anxiety is on the rise in the United States, making financial literacy – simply put, the ability to understand and effectively utilize various money management practices including budgeting, investing and saving among others – as important as ever.

In fact, 36% of the U.S. general population feel anxious about their current financial situations with 26% feeling strained, according to research from World Financial Group. Taking steps to become more financially literate and manage money more effectively can help.

While there isn’t one “right” way to gain financial literacy, these steps can help grow your understanding and confidence around

your finances.

1. Understand Your Finances

Understanding your finances and how your financial decisions impact your future self is essential for making appropriate choices. Without this understanding of your income and expenses, you become vulnerable to making the wrong decisions and can put yourself at greater risk in the future.

To further expand your knowledge base, consider taking a financial literacy quiz to test your understanding of concepts such as compounding interest, inflation and risk diversification. If necessary, don’t be afraid to seek the advice of a professional before making important financial decisions.

2. Take Control and Plan with Confidence

To take control of short- and longterm financial priorities and aspirations, individuals should plan ahead. Establishing these goals is the first step to effective planning,

whether lifestyle goals, hopes for retirement or specific items you wish to acquire, such as a new vehicle or home. This approach provides a target for building your savings and protection plans.

3. Prepare and Plan for Life’s Unexpected Events

If not adequately prepared, unexpected events can have catastrophic impacts on household finances. For example, having to leave the workforce early due to illness could mean years of lost earning power, which could impact your short- and long-term priorities and aspirations. Therefore, it’s essential to ensure backup plans, such as a retirement account or life insurance that includes income protection if unable to work, are in place, if the unexpected happens. This “cushion” can contribute to greater confidence in your future financial outlook and stronger feelings of security going into waves of economic uncertainty.

While foldable phones first entered the market as early as 2008 with Nokia’s “Morph” concept, it wasn’t until 2019 that foldable devices made a proper resurgence.

Despite initial skepticism, foldable phones are proving to be surprisingly durable. Devices like the Samsung Galaxy Fold can endure up to 200,000 folds, or roughly three years of regular use, with only minor issues like pixel damage or hinge wear.

This represents a significant engineering leap, pushing the boundaries of what a smartphone can be.

Bendgate: A Bending Reality for Slim Phones

In 2015, Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus made headlines for its susceptibility to bending under pressure, particularly when placed in pockets.

This was confirmed when the Allstate Protection Plans BendBot revealed that the Samsung Galaxy Edge cracked under the same pressure as the iPhone.

“Bendgate,” sparked widespread concerns over the durability of thin smartphone designs, leading to manufacturers seeking ways to strengthen designs.

The Hardware Evolution: Tougher, But Not Indestructible

Manufacturers now employ toughened materials like Gorilla Glass, aluminum, and even ceramic to withstand drops and scratches.

Yet, despite these advances, mod-

Early smartphones typically featured screens around 4 inches. In response to consumer demand, today’s models, such as Samsung’s Galaxy line, boast displays as large as 6.8 inches.

While bigger screens offer enhanced viewing experiences, holding and using larger phones with one hand has led to an increase in accidental drops.

A survey by Allstate Protection Plans found that 78% of users have dropped their devices while using them with one hand. The question remains whether the trade-off between screen size and ease of use is worth the risk.

Tougher, But Still Vulnerable

Smartphone durability has made impressive strides, yet no manufacturer has designed a device impervious to the Allstate Protection Plans DropBot—or the unforgiving impact of a sidewalk.

Given their vital role in our lives and the high repair costs for the latest models, it’s essential to protect these valuable devices.

Cases and screen protectors are must-haves, and a protection plan can be a real money-saver when accidents inevitably happen. For more information, visit allstateprotectionplans.com.

While smartphone technology has been ever-evolving for the past three decades, one thing remains unchanged: the importance of taking steps to protect your device, and your investment. (StatePoint)

More School Districts Approve Cricket For Off Campus Pe

(Continued From Page 01) As the sport’s global fan base expands, U.S. schools are increasingly recognizing the appeal of cricket, thanks to a concerted effort by organizations like WCI Academy and the nonprofit Cricket for All.

One of the most promising developments is the growing inclusion of cricket in American school programs. Recently, three Independent School Districts (ISDs)—Round Rock, Leander, and Liberty Hill in Texas—announced that they would be offering cricket as part of their Off-Campus Physical Education (OCPE) credit programs.

This move is a significant step in making cricket more accessible to young people and integrating it into the educational system. Students enrolled in these districts can now participate in cricket training, giving them an opportunity to learn and develop their skills in the sport.

Ashish Shah, whose son, Soham Shah, participates in the Round Rock ISD OffCampus PE program through WCI Cricket Academy, says, “This program has been invaluable, allowing Soham to earn PE credit for the sport he loves while balancing his time between academics and athletics.

It provides an incredible platform for the holistic development of students. We are thankful to both Round Rock ISD and WCI Academy for offering such a meaningful opportunity to our growing community.” This shift reflects a broader trend that’s been building in the U.S., driven by passionate

advocates like Alok Singh, the founder of Cricket for All, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting cricket across the country.

Singh, an elite Level-4 coach trained by Gary Kirsten— the World Cup and IPL winning coach—has been working tirelessly to expand youth cricket opportunities.

Singh’s efforts extend beyond simply creating awareness about the sport; he’s helping train physical education (PE) teachers across the nation, equipping them with the skills to coach cricket at the grassroots level.

“With cricket becoming a fixture in schools, we’re seeing youth engagement rise,” said Singh. “By training PE teachers, we’re not just growing players; we’re creating a sus-

tainable ecosystem where cricket can flourish across the U.S.”

Texas, particularly, is emerging as a hub for youth cricket. The state’s vibrant sports culture, combined with a growing Indian-American and immigrant population that already has a deep affinity for cricket, makes it an ideal location for the sport to take root.

Beyond just the school districts and academies, Cricket for All has been instrumental in making cricket more inclusive. The nonprofit provides opportunities for underrepresented communities, ensuring that cricket is accessible to children from all backgrounds. In addition to grassroots programs and school integration, Singh has also announced that legendary coach Gary Kirsten will play a pivotal role in educating and certifying PE teachers across the U.S. to lead cricket sessions.

Kirsten’s expertise will help expand the footprint of youth cricket in schools, ensuring that educators are equipped to teach the fundamentals and intricacies of the game. The program is set to reach hundreds of teachers across the country, further accelerating the growth of cricket in U.S. schools. Holiday cooking and baking may be a timeless tradition, but there are plenty of ways to elevate your favorite recipes to be healthier and more indulgent in taste and texture, and it all starts with the quality of the ingredients you choose.

Nutrient-rich ingredients including 100% grass-fed organic dairy can help you enjoy festive favorites while feeling good about creating recipes for friends and family. Cows that follow a 100% grass-fed diet produce a more nutrient-dense milk as nature intended, complete with an artisanal rich and creamy taste and texture that may become a staple ingredient this season.

Swap your conventional and traditional organic dairy for 100% grass-fed organic dairy from Maple Hill that provides superpremium ingredients for all your holiday recipes.

Yogurt

Just thin the yogurt slightly with water, if necessary, to achieve the perfect consistency for your recipe and provide a wholesome, fresh dairy flavor.

Butter

Enjoy the rich, smooth texture of butter in

all your holiday favorites – from baking cookies to whipping up creamy mashed potatoes, adding depth to soups and more. Crafted with just two simple ingredients, it reflects the purity of dairy as nature intended. With its creamy texture and rich flavor profile, 100% grass-fed organic butter brings a wholesome richness to your holiday table, offering a truly elevated experience your loved ones will savor.

Kefir

In response to the increasing demand for probiotic-rich, gut-friendly products, an option like kefir can be used as a healthier buttermilk to bring a light, tangy depth to cornbread, biscuits, frosting, cakes and more. While it can be enjoyed as a standalone drink with its rich flavor and potential gut-health benefits, its thick, creamy texture and indulgent, buttery notes make it an ideal substitute for tradition-

al dairy that’s just as nutrient-dense as it is delicious in a variety of holiday recipes.

Milk

To make holiday wreath popcorn treats: Spray large mixing bowl lightly with nonstick cooking spray and place popcorn inside.

In medium saucepan, melt butter over low heat. Stir in marshmallows and gelatin dessert powder until marshmallows are melted and mixture is smooth.

Pour over popcorn and mix well until coated.

Spray hands with nonstick cooking spray and press firmly to form popcorn mixture into 9-inch logs then bend to form “wreaths.”

Place “wreaths” on wax paper. Press candy pieces and jelly beans onto wreath to decorate; add “ribbon” cut from fruit leather. (Family Features)

4 Tips To Score Big On Black Friday Sales

Gone are the days when eager shoppers would camp outside stores, waiting for the chance to be among the first inside to take advantage of Black Friday sales.

While the Friday after Thanksgiving is still one of the biggest shopping events of the year, many consumers instead opt for the comfort and convenience of online shopping to secure the best deals.

With sales starting earlier seemingly every year, navigating the Black Friday – and Cyber Monday – deals takes planning and preparation. Maximize your time and savings this year with these expert strategies.

Plan Ahead for Maximum Savings

Preparation is key to making the most out of Black Friday sales. Start by creating a list of the items you need or want to buy.

Research the stores offering the best deals and follow your favorite brands on social media to get early access to discounts and promotions. Some retailers even offer sneak peeks of their ads so you can plan your shopping strategy accordingly.

Utilize Technology to Your Advantage

In today’s digital age, technology can be one of your best friends when it comes to shopping – Black

Friday, Cyber Monday and otherwise. Download apps that offer price comparisons, deal alerts and cashback rewards. Don’t forget to use online coupons and promo codes and set alerts on items you’re interested in to get notified when they drop in price.

Know When to Shop

While Black Friday is traditionally the day after Thanksgiving, many retailers start their sales early. Keep an eye out for pre-Black Friday sales, which can sometimes offer deals just as good as those on the actual day. For instore shopping, try to go as early as possible to snag the best deals before they sell out.

Find the Best Deals

Both in-store and online shopping have their advantages and disadvantages. In-store shopping allows you to actually see items before buying and you might find exclusive in-store deals. Online

shopping, on the other hand, offers the convenience of shopping from home and often has a wider selection. Many retailers also offer online-only discounts and free shipping. To get the best of both worlds, consider a hybrid ap-

proach: shop online for hard-tofind items and go in-store for items you want to see or try before buying. Find more tips to save money year-round at eLivingtoday.com.

What Trump’s Immigration Plans Mean For The US

(Continued From Page 01)

The highest year of deportations from the U.S. interior is 238,000 immigrants, reached in 2009. “Currently, most people we deport are already in detention. The government just picks them up … and figures out whether they’re allowed to be here and how to get them back, and if the country will take them back,” said Jeremy Robbins, executive director of the American Immigration Council. “With mass deportations, however, we’re talking about finding people in their communities,” he continued. “The two branches of the Department of Homeland Security that specifically do that do not have the capacity. It’s extremely expensive … Nor do we have the detention capacity. You’d need a whole new set of asylum facilities and judges before even getting people home.”

Deporting all undocumented immigrants, which represent about 4.8% of the U.S. workforce as of 2022, would cost about $315 billion and have between a 4.2% and 6.8% negative impact on GDP, by conservative estimates. By comparison, the national GDP fell 4.3% during the Great Recession, from 2007 to 2009. “For most things Congress will fund, they’ll need 60 votes. Budget reconciliation needs 50. It’s far from clear they can fund these measures … but they can repurpose money from elsewhere,” said Robbins. “It’s possible to use forms like the military, but our resources are already strained.” (Continued On Page 25)

3 Essential Tips To Prepare Your Garden For Winter

As the chill of winter approaches, it’s important to prepare your garden to withstand the cold months and emerge vibrant again in the spring.

Before the first frost, take a walk around your garden to assess its current state and begin planning

ahead for next growing season. As you review what worked well and make notes for improvements, keep these winterizing tips in mind before the weather turns colder.

Protect Plants from the Cold

Start by identifying plants that need to be moved indoors or to a sheltered location.

For those that can survive winter with minimal intervention, like perennials and shrubs, add a thick layer of mulch to insulate plant roots from freezing temperatures and retain soil moisture.

For more delicate plants, consider burlap wraps, frost covers or cloches to add an extra layer of protection.

Prepare the Soil for Spring

After your final harvest, clear any dead or dying plants to prevent the spread of disease.

Turn the soil over and add compost to enrich it for the next growing season.

Consider planting cover crops like clover or rye, which can be tilled into the soil in the spring to add organic matter, to help prevent soil erosion and improve soil health during the winter months.

Winterize Garden Tools and Equipment

Before storing them for winter, clean and sharpen your garden tools to help prevent rust and have them ready to use again in the spring.

Drain fuel from your lawnmower and any other gas-powered equipment and store them in a dry, sheltered location until needed again.

Visit eLivingtoday.com for more tips to keep your lawn and garden lush and green.

Easy Renter-Friendly Tips To Weatherize Your Home

Taking the proper steps to weatherproof your rental is a simple way to stay snug this cold-weather season – while also resulting in notable savings on heating and energy bills.

In fact, a Duck brand survey found that 80% of people noticed a decrease in their heating bill after using affordable weatherization products, such as window insulation kits, weatherstrip seals and door draft seals. With this in mind, here are temporary ways to prep your rental for the winter without causing any damage.

Install draft seals. Doors and windows are notorious for letting in cold air, which can drastically affect your home’s temperature. Fortunately for renters, the Duck Brand Double Draft Seal is a removable solution designed to insulate your door from both sides.

This practical tool blocks drafts while maintaining the room’s temperature, ensuring both comfort and energy efficiency. Simply slide the seal under interior or exterior doors and window frames to keep cold air from coming in. Even better, the seals can be reused in future residences, making them a smart choice for keeping your comfort intact wherever you choose to live next.

Hang thermal curtains. Thermal curtains are an excellent option if you’re looking for DIY ways to increase your space’s en-

ergy efficiency. By hanging these insulated drapes, the cold air between the window and fabric remains trapped, helping to maintain a comfortable temperature without the need to turn up the heat. If your lease doesn’t give permission to drill into the wall, use a tension rod to install them.

Embrace window kits. If thermal curtains aren’t your style, installing a removable window kit is just as easy. The Duck Max Strength Rolled Shrink Film Window Insulation Kit creates an added barrier between the outdoor air and your home’s inside. Plus, unlike thermal curtains, the film is crystal clear and allows natural light to peer through windows.

Dress your floors. Who said weatherization can’t be stylish? By placing decorative, cozy rugs on hardwood floors and tiles, you can further insulate your rental.

While these items won’t fully prevent heat loss, they do offer an extra layer of warmth and can help reduce drafts from cold floors, making them an obvious choice if you’re a renter looking to stay warm without making permanent changes.

Why Americans Are Rallying For Afterschool Programs This Fall

Afterschool programs help children and youth thrive in school and in life. They provide homework help, opportunities to get active, and access to healthy snacks and meals. They help children develop friendships, meet mentors, learn about STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), explore college and careers, and engage in

community service. Through these activities, and more, afterschool programs help youth build the skills they need to succeed.

A million people across the United States are celebrating afterschool programs this fall, and rallying for more resources for them, as part of Lights On Afterschool 2024. More

than 8,000 Lights On Afterschool events are taking place in every part of the country. In California, students are displaying wiggle robots, paintings and block-builds they created. In Colorado, parents are jotting down their dreams for their children and putting them in a Dream Box. In Florida, students are sharing what they learned about the migration of monarch butterflies. In Indiana, students are showing the PSAs they created about how substance use has affected their lives.

As a testament to the importance of afterschool programming, some big names are lending their support. Superstar Usher is serving as honorary chair of Lights On Afterschool this year, organized once again by the Afterschool Alliance.

“Afterschool programs keep kids safe, inspire them to learn, and give working families peace of mind that their children are safe, super-

vised and learning after school. Lights On Afterschool is a chance to showcase the skills students hone and the talents they develop at these programs,” said Afterschool Alliance executive director, Jodi Grant.

To learn more about afterschool programs and Lights On Afterschool, visit afterschoolalliance. org.

This year, Lights On Afterschool comes as funding for programs across the nation, provided from federal pandemic relief, winds down. These funds have helped afterschool programs meet ris-

ing costs and provide support for millions of youth. In recent years, Congress has failed to significantly increase funding for 21st Century Community Learning Centers, the chief federal funding stream for afterschool and summer learning programs.

“There aren’t nearly enough afterschool programs to meet the soaring demand,” Grant added. “For every child in an afterschool program in our country, four more are waiting to get in. We urgently need greater investments from all sectors so all students can benefit from the essential supports afterschool programs provide.” (StatePoint)

• 1 1/2 ounce mature cheddar, grated

• 1 teaspoon nigella seeds

Directions:

1. Place a large frying pan over

high heat and char the whole corn on all sides for 10 minutes, turning regularly until slightly blackened. Remove to a board and cut off all the kernels into a bowl.

2. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Grease and line a 10-inch ovenproof skillet pan.

3. Tip the flour, baking powder, cayenne pepper and 1 teaspoon salt into a bowl and whisk together.

4. In another bowl, mix together the yogurt, oil, polenta, maple syrup and vinegar; whisk until combined.

5. Pour the wet mix into the dry ingredients and fold to combine. Add the green onions, feta and charred corn and stir again.

6. Pour the cornbread mix into the prepared skillet. Add small spoonfuls of Amy’s Organic Spicy Chili on top.

Top with grated cheddar and nigella seeds. Bake in the oven for 4045 minutes until risen and a skewer comes out clean.

7. Enjoy while warm or serve at room temperature. Best eaten that day.

Pro tip: Serve alongside smashed avocado or fresh tomato salsa. Slice the cornbread up, pop into the freezer and when you fancy a slice, simply defrost and reheat in the toaster.

What Parents And Expectant Parents Need To Know About RSV

Helping Students With Disabilities Pay For College

Each year, as many as 80,000 children younger than 5 are hospitalized due to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in the United States. RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization in all infants. New medical advancements however are safeguarding infants and some toddlers at increased risk, and providing hope.

As RSV season ramps up, the American Lung Association is partnering with Sanofi to help educate parents and expectant parents about the symptoms of RSV and the steps they can take to help prevent severe illness. Here is what they want you to know:

Risk factors: Virtually every child will contract RSV at some point, however those at highest risk for severe illness and complications are:

• Premature newborns

• Babies up to 12 months old, especially if they are 6 months old or younger

• Children younger than 2 who have a chronic lung disease or heart disease that was present at birth

• Children who have weakened immune systems

• Children who have neuromuscular disorders

New protection: In 2023, two preventive immunization options were recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help protect infants from serious RSV illness: a preventive RSV antibody for infants and some young children at increased risk, and an RSV vaccine received during weeks 32-36 of pregnancy.

The RSV antibody is recommended from

October through March and provides protection for at least five months after immunization. The RSV vaccine is recommended from September through January and provides protection for around six months after birth.

Both immunization options are effective in reducing the risk of a baby being hospitalized from RSV, however most infants do not need both. Speak to your physician about the best course of action for your family.

Symptoms: Most people, including infants, develop only mild RSV symptoms similar to that of a common cold, such as congestion, runny nose and a cough. You should call your healthcare provider if your child is having difficulty breathing, not drinking enough or their symptoms are getting worse.

Age-old wisdom: To prevent RSV infection, families are also encouraged to follow everyday healthy habits like:

• Avoiding close contact with sick people

• Covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue

• Washing hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds

• Cleaning frequently-touched surfaces

• Staying home when sick and avoiding close contact with others

• Avoiding sharing cups, bottles or toys

To learn more about RSV and illness prevention, visit lung.org/rsv. “Thanks to new preventive options, you now have multiple opportunities to offer your child safe, effective protection from a dangerous RSV infection,” says Juanita Mora, M.D., national volunteer medical spokesperson for the American Lung Association. Every student deserves a fair shot. Fortunately, opportunities exist to help people with disabilities pursue the education and training they need to succeed in their chosen career path.

Since 2017, Wells Fargo has partnered with Scholarship America to award 253 renewable scholarships to students with disabilities. Recently renamed “The Stacey Milbern Scholarship” after the pioneering activist, the scholarships open doors to new opportunities and foster greater accessibility for all.

Stacey Milbern was a Korean American activist who helped create the disability justice movement and advocated for fair treatment of all disabled people. Born with congenital muscular dystrophy, a genetic degenerative disease, Milbern eventually became reliant on a scooter, a tracheostomy tube and a ventilator.

Despite living with challenges, she found the strength to dedicate herself to disability justice from a young age. While she was still a student, she worked to have disability history added to the school curriculum and raised awareness of disability rights through her blog and other outreach efforts.

In adulthood, she founded the Disability Justice Culture Club, helped organize protests, and worked to meet the needs of disabled and unhoused people during the early days of the pandemic.

She also brought her unique perspective to corporate America, serving as Wells Fargo’s accommodations management consultant, and was an impact producer for the Netflix documentary “Crip Camp: A Disability

Revolution,” which centers on the lives and voices of disabled Americans.

In 2025, Stacey’s legacy will be celebrated by the U.S. Mint along with Ida B. Wells, Dr. Vera Rubin, and other honorees as part of the American Women Quarters Program.

“Milbern passed away in 2020, but her achievements are honored in many ways, including in the Wells Fargo Stacey Milbern Scholarship. Wells Fargo was honored to receive an Irving Innovation Award from Scholarship America for its decision to rename our scholarship after her, and it serves as a testament to her legacy in advancing accessibility to education for students with disabilities,” says Andrew Holbrook, chief accessibility officer for Diverse Segments, Representation and Inclusion at Wells Fargo.

This year, the program will award renewable scholarships of up to $2,500 for full-time students and renewable scholarships of up to $1,250 for part-time students who plan to enroll at an accredited two- or four-year college or university in the United States for the upcoming academic year.

For more information about the scholarship and to register to be notified when it is available in February 2025, visit scholarshipamerica.org. For more information about paying for college, visit collegesteps.wf.com.

“At a time when a college degree in the United States has never been more expensive, it is essential to create more pathways to success for students of all backgrounds,” says Holbrook.

What Trump’s Immigration Plans Mean For The US

(Continued From Page 18)

The existing Department of Homeland Security (DHS) budget — $107.9 billion for fiscal year 2025 — exceeds all other federal law enforcement budgets combined. The current daily detention capacity is estimated to be around 50,000.

Congress has provided approximately $3.4 billion to detain a daily average of 41,500 noncitizens in 2024, of which 60.1% have no criminal record. For comparison, funds in 2023 were $2.9 billion to detain an average of 34,000 noncitizens daily.

Along with difficulties getting bipartisan Congressional support, “Biden has already maximally deployed existing resources for enforcement,” said Greg Chen, senior director of government relations at the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

“They don’t have the resources to do much more … and contracting with private facilities, or training state and national guards, will mean more expensive delays.” DHS data from 2023 shows that, in absolute terms, 3.5 times as many people were removed under Biden than under Trump.

Of the 1.4 million arrests made in the 24 months of 2019 and 2020 under Trump, 47% were removed from the U.S. In the first 26.3 months under Biden, DHS made over 5 million arrests, of which 51% were removed.

Legal immigration

“Trump has been talking so much about mass deportations that we rarely hear about impacts on the legal immigration system, meaning the hundreds of thousands of employment visas, family visas and humanitarian visas coming through every year,” said Chen.Annual new legal permanent residents fell under Trump from 1,183,500 in 2016 to 707,400 in 2020, according to DHS data; the numbers have shot back up since then to 1,173,000 in 2023. “During the first Trump administration, we saw retrogression — meaning it took much longer to process these cases,” Chen continued.

“For an employment or family visa that might typically take three to six months, we saw those times typically double.” He added that these backlogs are often created by understaffing departments and by Requests for Evidence, which are “ways of asking for more information on a case to ferret out fraud.

But if used unnecessarily, it simply becomes red tape … and if immigration is unavail-

able to people who are trying to come here through legal means, we’ll be seeing greater amounts of illegal migration.”

Currently, immigrants arriving at official crossing points on the border can make an appointment through the CBP One app and wait months to be processed into the U.S. with temporary humanitarian parole.

“People who try to enter between those points have a very hard time qualifying to begin the process towards asylum,” said Julia Gelatt, associate director of the Migration Policy Institute’s U.S. immigration policy program. “Under Trump, we can expect that the CPB

One process at ports of entry will end, meaning that it will be very difficult for people coming to the border to access legal asylum proceedings,” she continued. “Instead, we’ll likely see what we’ve seen before: people paying smugglers to sneak them into the United States, rather than to the border, where many people now present themselves to border authorities to ask for protection,” she added.

Trump has also suggested that he’ll scale back the use of Temporary Status — which covers over one million immigrants, mostly Venezuelan, Haitian and Salvadoran — and eliminate Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), on which about 580,000 immigrants rely.

The Supreme Court ruled in 2020 that the president can terminate DACA, a policy which gives some people who came to the U.S. illegally as children the right to study and work in the country. “Most employers want to hire a legal workforce. If their workers lose authorizations like DACA and TPS, they’ll have to let them go,” said Gelatt.

“We’re an aging country … and when we lose immigrant workers, it doesn’t necessarily create jobs for U.S. workers. If an employer loses the immigrant workers they rely on, they might contract out their operation or close shop altogether. Immigrants and US workers are compliments in the labor force.”

Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that the unemployment rate for U.S.-born workers in 2023 was 3.6%, the lowest on record. That year, the share of employed prime-age (25 to 54) U.S.-born workers was 81.4%, the highest rate since 2001.

Elizabeth Taufa, Policy Attorney & Strategist, Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC), discusses the impacts Trump’s mass

deportation plan will have on local communities.

While mass crackdowns on these immigrants “will take more resources than the new administration will have, resulting in economic devastation across the country, they’re still counting on instilling fear in communities,” added Chen.

“ We have people with legal status calling our attorneys because they’re afraid that they’ll be rounded up because they’ll be profiled. Those are legitimate concerns in this new environment.”

“What does it look like when that intimidation campaign is working? It looks like kids not going to school because their parents fear being deported, shortages of health care workers because people move to safer states or are removed from the country, like shortages of teachers here on TPS and DACA,” said Elizabeth Taufa, policy attorney at the Immigrant Legal Resource Center.

“Even if they can’t afford to enforce these policies, they’re unraveling the threads of our American communities,” she added. (Ethnic Media Services)(Courtesy: https:// indiawest.com/)

Ship Smarter, Not Harder: Holiday Shipping Insights Unwrapped

In today’s fast-paced, digital world, there are many gift-giving options for loved ones far and wide, from sending e-gift cards to their favorite shops and restaurants to creating custom video messages. However, a new survey from Duck brand, a leading maker of mailing and shipping products, finds that the festive fun of sending physical presents isn’t lost.

“We learned that most people—98%—send at least one package containing gifts and nearly half—46%—typically mail up to three gifts throughout the season,” says Natalie Guillaume, director of product marketing, packaging tapes, at Shurtape Technologies, LLC, the company that markets Duck brand. “To make the process holly and jolly, we recommend planning ahead and purchasing high-quality supplies to ensure presents arrive on time and in one piece.”

Good Tidings Delivered on Time

More than 60% of survey participants say they send their packages two to four weeks in advance of when they need to arrive.

Still, 43% express their greatest concern when mailing goods throughout the yuletide season is the parcel arriving on time. Knowing they can’t rely on the magic of Santa’s sleigh to make a timely delivery, Guillaume suggests getting ahead of the holiday hustle by checking delivery deadlines for the busy season. Then, leaving a little leeway to account for delays due to winter weather or other logistical challenges.

Don’t Let Tape Get Your Tinsel in a Tangle

When it comes to shipping, the wrong tape can turn anyone into a Grinch. Nearly half of people (45%) say tape not sticking well to boxes is their biggest challenge. In this case, a heavy-duty tape will do the trick. Look for one with a wide temperature range performance, so you don’t have to worry about damaged deliveries due to a frosty forecast.

Additionally, 40% of people have experienced difficulty tearing packing tape. Duck Brand EZ Start Packing Tape, made with FrustrationFree technology, provides a simple solution for smooth, easy and quiet removal from the roll. The easy-to-use dispenser is uniquely designed to eliminate the annoyance of losing the tape end, which 39% of respondents say is a struggle. With these tips, you can send parcels on their merry way for a holiday season of stress-free gift giving. (StatePoint)

“Preserving South Asian Cinema’s Legacy Through Indie Meme’s Journey!”

Shekhar Kapur Plans AI-Focused Film School In Dharavi

(Continued From Page 01)

This one-day exhibit offered a sneak peek into the project’s mission to unite South Asian cinephiles and local communities under a shared love for cinema.

Through a grant from the City of Austin’s Economic Development Department’s Heritage Grant program, Indie Meme has been able to begin cataloging its history and contributions to Texas’s cultural landscape, preserving it for future generations through the Austin History Center’s archives.

The exhibit was a vibrant celebration of Indie Meme’s journey. Guests enjoyed an array of memorabilia, including vintage film posters, founding documents, promotional flyers, and T-shirts, which together painted a rich picture of the organization’s history.

Posters from all nine previous Indie Meme Film Festivals lined the gallery walls, while oral histories recorded with members, filmmakers, and volunteers were available for visitors to explore in the Reading Room.

A highlight of the event was a lively panel discussion featuring Indie Meme team members and collaborators. Participants included Animon Jose (Programming Director, Donor, and Board Member), Peggy Ellithorpe (Cultural Funding Specialist for the City of Austin and longtime supporter), filmmaker Miriam Chandy Menacherry, and Sharmila Mehta (Sponsor, and Board Member).

Uma Riddle, Indie Meme Archival Project Manager and Volunteer Programmer moderated the discussion, which delved into the organization’s milestones and the impact of South Asian cinema in Austin.

Adding an element of fun and nostalgia, cofounder Alka Bhanot led a trivia contest, challenging attendees’ knowledge of Indie Meme’s rich history.

Questions ranged from the location of their first-ever screening in May 2013 of the Film Girl Rising (the now-closed Arbor Theater) to memorable moments like the screening of Lyari Notes at IMFF 2016, where both filmmakers Maheen Zia and Miriam Chandy Menacherry were present.

For those who have supported or attended Indie Meme events in the past, there’s still an opportunity to contribute to its archives.

Indie Meme encourages the community to share their stories and memories by visiting https://www.indiememe.org/indie-meme-archival.

Looking ahead, Indie Meme invites audiences to their upcoming screening of Dilli Dark, the story of Michael Okeke, a Nigerian navigating racism and adversity while living in New Delhi.

The screening, featuring a live Q&A with director Dibakar Das Roy, will take place at 4:30 PM on December 8th at AFS Cinema. Tickets are on sale now at https://www.indiememe. org/event-details/dilli-dark

MUMBAI – Veteran filmmaker Shekhar Kapur is set to launch an AI-focused film school in Mumbai’s Dharavi slum district. According to Variety, the initiative builds on Kapur’s long-running work with

The Dharavi Project, a collaboration with Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman. This project, focused on hip-hop and rap in Dharavi, has already helped launch several students to national stardom, in partnership with Universal Music.

Kapur shared with Variety, “Those kids have become national stars. For years, people have told me, ‘Please start a film school.

’ I’m going to start a film school in Dharavi, and the reason is because I think that Artificial Intelligence is a new push in cinema.”

He described AI as the most “democratic technology” of our time, explaining, “AI is the most democratic technology that has come in, despite what everybody says.

Because I know that my future competition is not with the biggest directors in the world, it is with this 15-year-old girl who lives in a slum in Mumbai, who understands prompting and will be able to create one-minute, two-minute, 10-minute films

just by sitting at the computer… and will be better than me.”

Kapur believes that with access to AI technology, anyone could become “the greatest filmmaker in the world.” The exact timeline for the school’s launch is yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, Kapur is preparing for the sequel to his hit 1983 film Masoom. He revealed, “The script is ready, and I will start shooting in February or March.

I was traveling from Dubai to Delhi, and I realized I had left the ‘Masoom 2’ script on the plane seat.

But I got it back, and a flight attendant wrote me a note saying that Masoom was a very good film, and this one will be just as good. So, see, it came back even after being left behind—there must be something to it. It’s destiny.”

The sequel promises a fresh storyline while retaining the core values that made the original Masoom beloved.

The star-studded cast will include Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Manoj Bajpayee, and Kapur’s daughter, Kaveri, among others. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

Rakesh Roshan As ‘Karan Arjun’ Returns To Theatres

MUMBAI (ANI) – The Bollywood classic Karan Arjun, starring Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, is set to re-release globally on November 22. Directed by Rakesh Roshan, the film is cherished for its iconic storyline, memorable dialogues, and stellar performances.

Rakesh Roshan opened up about the decision to bring Karan Arjun back to theaters, describing it as a test to see whether the reincarnation-based story still resonates with today’s audience. “I am feeling a bit nervous because this is like an experiment.

Back then, the film worked because it was a wholesome entertainer with a story based on reincarnation—a mother believing her sons will return, and they do. I’m curious to see whether today’s generation believes in such a story

or not. If they like the film, it will mean that the generation hasn’t changed. But if they don’t enjoy it, it will indicate that times have indeed changed,” he shared.

Roshan also reflected on the challenges he faced while making Karan Arjun. “This was a very difficult film for me because I had to convince the audience to believe in the story.

A mother says her two sons will come back, and they do—showing how they are reborn, where they are born, how they meet, and how they find their mother. Convincing people was a tough journey for me as a director,” he said.

The film’s dialogues, such as “Mere Karan Arjun aayenge” and “Bhaag Arjun bhaag,” have become ingrained in popular culture, often featured in memes. Roshan

The film, which has achieved cult status over the years, will re-release in single screens and multiplexes across India and internationally. Originally released in 1995, Karan Arjun revolves around the themes of reincarnation and revenge, with Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan playing brothers Karan and Arjun.

When asked about acting again, Roshan said, “I would love to act if someone offers me a role. But I wouldn’t cast myself in my own

From ‘Fauji’ To ‘Jawaan,’ An Unstoppable Cinematic Odyssey

MUMBAI (ANI) – Shah Rukh Khan’s journey from a young television actor to the “King of Bollywood” is nothing short of extraordinary. A man who transcended the role of an actor to become an emotion, his name has become synonymous with romance, resilience, and reinvention.

Born in New Delhi, Khan’s rise to fame began far from the glittering lights of Bollywood. In 1989, he made his television debut with Fauji, where he played Abhimanyu Rai, a young soldier in training. Though his charisma was evident, no one could have predicted the legendary career that was about to unfold.

Following Fauji, Khan appeared in Circus and a few other TV shows, laying the foundation for his entry into films. In 1992, he made his big-screen debut in Deewana, which earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.

His portrayal of a romantic hero quickly made him an audience favorite, but it was his bold choice to take on darker, unconventional roles in Darr (1993), Baazigar (1993), and Anjaam (1994) that set him apart, showcasing his versatility and willingness to push boundaries.

and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) further amplified his ability to create deeply emotional connections with audiences, reinforcing his place as a cinematic icon.
