NEW DELHI/ BEIJING (REUTERS) -India and China have begun implementing an agreement to end a military standoff on their disputed Himalayan border, the two sides said on October 25, in the biggest thaw between the Asian giants since deadly clashes between their armies four years ago. Troops who were eyeball-to-eyeball at two points on the frontier in India’s Ladakh region in the western Himalayas had begun pulling
back, an Indian government source said, heralding an end to the standoff.
The process began on October 23 and is expected to conclude by the end of the month, a senior Indian army official said. (Continued On Page 10)

AUSTIN, Texas — In a breakthrough year for youth cricket, the Austin Blasters have solidified their position as one of the nation’s top under-11 cricket teams, winning four championships in 2024.
Their success has marked them as a rising powerhouse in the increas-
ingly competitive youth cricket scene in the United States.
The Blasters claimed their first title on May 30, 2024, when they defeated the HYCC - Houston by 6 wickets in the Memorial Day tournament hosted by NTCA in Dallas.
It was a decisive victory that set the stage for a year of consistent dominance. (Continued On Page 17)
The school year can be overwhelming for students and families. With tests, studying and extra-curricular activities, students have a lot to balance. This can be challenging for students managing health conditions, including allergies, diabetes and others that require using and safely disposing of needles, syringes, or epinephrine autoinjectors at school.
Parents and school faculty can help promote safe sharps disposal so students and staff can better focus on learning by using the following tips and resources from SafetyIsThePoint.org.
For many, learning about safe medical sharps disposal starts at home. Free, educational resources help answer questions like “How do I safely dispose of medical sharps?” and “What are the disposal rules in my area?”
The SafetyIsThePoint.org website features a clickable map and ZIP

in educating about safe sharps disposal. Posters and fact sheets can be downloaded and printed for easy integration into lesson plans or displayed in classrooms and offices.
These materials both educate about proper medical sharps disposal and raise awareness of health condi-
tions that require the use of sharps. For schools and districts that use social media, sample posts can be downloaded and shared online to reach students and their families.
Schools can incorporate the messages and materials into newsletters.
Parents, teachers and other school staff play a crucial role in ensuring students are protecting and preventing themselves and others from getting hurt. Household sharps disposal rules vary by state, so it’s important to check local re-
quirements as some prohibit disposing of sharps in household trash or recycling. Some states require sharps to be dropped off at a collection center in an approved container.
The basics about sharp disposal are as easy as knowing these three steps:
1. Place used sharps in a strong, plastic container like an empty laundry detergent or bleach bottle.
2. When the container is 75% full, seal it tightly with duct tape and label it clearly with “Do Not Recycle.”
3. Place the sealed container in regular household trash, if permitted in your area.
You can learn more about safe sharps disposal this back-to-school season and beyond at SafetyIsThePoint.org. By arming your children, their teachers and yourself with the latest safety information, you can help make school a safer experience for everyone. (StatePoint)
Each year, 500 to 1,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Because this progressive, chronic disorder is rare, it is often under-detected, causing delayed diagnosis with a potentially significant impact on people living with the disease.
November is Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness Month. To raise awareness and provide resources about PAH with a goal of speeding the path to diagnosis and understanding treatment options, the American Lung Association, with support from Merck, is sharing the following facts and insights:
What is PAH? Pulmonary arterial hypertension is a specific type of pulmonary hypertension caused when the tiny arteries in the lung become thickened and narrowed. This blocks blood flow through the lungs, raising the blood pressure in the lungs and causing the heart to work harder.
In the early stages of PAH, it is possible a patient may not notice any symptoms at all. As the disease progresses, they will start to experience symptoms common to other lung diseases. The most common symptoms include:

In a major policy shift, the United States is targeting plastic pollution at the production, processing, use and disposal phases, and is backing a global treaty to reduce plastic production. Advocates are celebrating the move as a watershed moment and a step in the right direction toward protecting human health, communities and the environment.
“As one of the biggest plastic producers and consumers, this helps put the United States on the right side of history. Not only does it show that we are willing to stand with countries that recognize that we cannot recycle our way out of this crisis, but it also aligns with the desires of most Americans,” says Lisa Ramsden, senior oceans campaigner, Greenpeace USA.
As Ramsden points out, Americans are becoming increasingly aware of how plastic litters oceans, pollutes the air near production facilities, exacerbates the impacts of climate change, harms animals, and threatens public health, and they
are catching onto the fact that most plastic never gets recycled. In fact, almost two-thirds of Americans support a Global Plastics Treaty that would ban single-use plastic packaging, according to a Greenpeace International poll.
“While the announcement from the Biden-Harris administration is encouraging, there is still much work
to be done,” says Ramsden.
According to Greenpeace, here is what you can do to protect your family from harmful chemicals in plastic, and to help advocate for a healthier planet.
• Encourage your favorite brands to reduce their plastic use and your retailers to stock their shelves with
brands that use nonplastic packaging.
• Consider plastics policy at the ballot box this November and beyond. At every level of government—local, state and national—you can explore which candidates’ values align with your own.
• Remember that plastics can harm human health. Plastics have been found in human blood, breast milk, placentas, lungs and hearts.
To protect your family, consider phasing out plastic food storage containers and using stainless steel or glass alternatives. Never heat
food in plastic containers or drink hot beverages out of plastic cups. You can also filter your drinking water with a filter designed to remove microplastics.
• Know that the recent White House announcement is just a first step and that plastic production lobbying groups are working to reverse course. You can encourage the government to back their promises with concrete action by signing Greenpeace’s “End the Age of Plastic” treaty at: engage. us.greenpeace.org. To learn more, visit www.greenpeace.org.
“We have known for decades that plastic pollution is poisoning our bodies, communities and oceans, and millions of people worldwide have called for our leaders to end the age of plastic.
Right now, we have a once-in-ageneration opportunity to put the world on a path towards a plasticfree future, but it will be up to all of us to make sure that happens,” says Ramsden. (StatePoint)

Why is early diagnosis important? Left untreated, PAH will progress and is deadly.
The path to diagnosis can be long, frustrating and difficult. In fact, the average time to accurate diagnosis is over two years.
However, the sooner an individual is diagnosed, the sooner they can begin the correct treatment protocol to best manage their symptoms.
What barriers are there to treatment and diagnosis? Because symptoms are similar to other common lung diseases, it can often be hard to diagnose PAH.
Individuals with rare diseases are more likely to have limited access to specialized care options, lack
providers who understand their disease, and often face high treatment costs.
Who is most at risk? PAH is most common in women between ages 30-60 and disproportionately impacts Black and Hispanic women.
Members of these groups are also more likely to experience worse health outcomes once diagnosed due to delayed diagnosis and barriers to care caused by systemic inequalities in the healthcare system.
How is PAH treated? Although there is no cure for PAH, there are medications and treatments that can slow the progression of the disease and improve a person’s quality of life.
Treatments include medication, supplemental oxygen, pulmonary rehabilitation or, in severe cases, a lung transplant.
The treatments available for PAH specifically target and restore balance among one or more of three pathways in the lungs that contribute to disease progression: nitric
oxide, endothelin, and prostacyclin.
Where can those living with PAH find support? Those living with PAH should work closely with their healthcare team to manage their disease.
Support can be found by calling the American Lung Association HelpLine at 1-800-586-4872 and pressing 2.
Callers can ask questions about their lung health and receive help finding a specialist, support or guidance for financial assistance.
Having PAH is life changing. However, being diagnosed as soon as possible can help you get on the right path to optimal disease management.

The fall season is upon us and it’s the perfect time to reset and renew. Simple and small modifications to your daily exercise and nutrition routines can make a huge difference—and these three easy tips will help you “fall” back into a good routine.
Sneak in Extra Steps
Fall is a refreshing time of year to get moving, especially as we welcome a break from the summer heat. Engaging in simple cardiovascular exercise weekly is key. It can help maintain healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels.
If working out regularly is daunting, instead, find simple ways to be active in your daily life. Use a smaller cup for your water, allowing you to get up more often to refill it, take the stairs instead of the elevator or park a bit farther from your destination—all these habits will encourage you to take more steps per day.
Make Healthy Swaps
Looking to eat healthier? The fall season offers an abundance of delicious vegetables and fruits for an easy swap out.
Start small by trading out a bag of chips for an apple or fries for sweet potatoes. You are what you eat, and your gut microbiome
plays a major role in your health.
Ultra-processed diets negatively impact gut health and throw off the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, which can lead to chronic inflammation. Inflammation lessens your ability to function properly at the cellular level and increases your vulnerability to lifestyle diseases.
A fall reset should focus on whole body health and that starts with your cells. Your body is made up of trillions of cells that help keep you functioning and thriving and supporting them is crucial.
Krill oil is an effective supplement for keeping your cells and whole body healthy. What distinguishes krill oil from other marine oils, is that it is a natural multi nutrient.
Meaning, that from the source, krill oil al-
ready contains several essential and cellular nutrients all in one, including omega-3s, phospholipids, choline and astaxanthin. The body’s cells need to get these nutrients from the diet on a consistent basis.
In krill oil, the omega-3s are bound to phospholipids, making them more easily absorbed by the body. This means you get more of the beneficial omega-3s in a form that your body can use efficiently.
“By adding a supplement like krill oil to our lives, we are helping ourselves in a big way,” says Thomas Repstad, nutritionist and global technical marketing manager at Aker BioMarine, a biotech innovator and supplier of Superba Krill.
“The real X factor in krill oil is its phospholipid advantage. Around each cell and membrane, we have phospholipids that help maintain the cell’s strength, flexibility, and integrity. Phospholipids are also naturally found in krill oil, delivering total body benefits at a cellular level.”

Let these three tips be an easy and effective way for falling back into a healthy routine this season and beyond. (StatePoint)
Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) is an ultra-rare lung disease with approximately 3,600 diagnosed cases in the United States. Unfortunately, some people are potentially living with the disease without knowing it, as it is often misdiagnosed.
That is why the American Lung Association, with support from Savara Inc., is launching a new educational campaign to help healthcare providers and patients better recognize the signs and symptoms of autoimmune pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, (aPAP), the most common form of the disease. As part of the campaign, they are sharing these fast facts:
What is aPAP? This disease is characterized by the abnormal buildup of surfactant in the air sacs of the lungs, which can make breathing difficult. The buildup is due to an inability to clear the surfactant. Occurring in both males and females, aPAP is often diagnosed between the ages of 30 and 60.
What are its symptoms? Some people who are living with aPAP may not show symptoms initially, while others may have progressive shortness of breath. Additional symptoms include chronic cough, fatigue, unintentional weight loss and chest pain.
Why is aPAP commonly misdiagnosed? Since aPAP is so rare, and because symp-
toms are similar to other more common lung diseases, it is often misdiagnosed. Common misdiagnoses include both acute and chronic lung diseases such as pneumonia and asthma.
How is aPAP diagnosed?
If you are diagnosed with another lung disease and the treatment is not effective, your doctor may recommend a chest CT scan. If you have an abnormal chest scan with unresolved lung symptoms, you should also talk to your healthcare provider about getting a free, simple blood test called aPAP ClearPath, which measures the level of the GM-CSF antibodies in your blood to determine if you have the disease.
How is aPAP treated? Currently, there is no
cure for aPAP and no FDA-approved therapies; however, symptoms can be managed. The most common treatment is whole lung lavage, (WLL) also called “lung washing.” WLL washes out the built-up surfactant from the lungs, allowing you to breathe more easily. This treatment often needs to be repeated, as it doesn’t address the underlying cause of the disease.
Managing aPAP well means seeing a specialist who is familiar with this rare lung disease and going to all of your regularly scheduled healthcare appointments.
To learn more, visit Lung.org/PAP.
Without treatment, this progressive disease can increase the risk of infection and lead to respiratory failure that may become life threatening. Don’t wait. Talk to your doctor if your respiratory symptoms are not being managed with current treatments. StatePoint)
(Continued From Page 01) “The majority of lower-extremity amputations are preceded by a reoccurring foot sore or an ulcer that won’t heal,” says John S. Steinberg,
DPM, FACFAS, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and a Fellow Member and Past President of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS). “Patients do best when they take charge of their foot health with the help of a foot and ankle surgeon.”
The surgeon members of ACFAS are sharing some important insights into preventing foot ulcers associated with diabetes and treating them if they do occur.
Make these precautions part of your foot care routine:
• Inspect feet daily using a flashlight and mirror to see the bottoms of your feet.
• Moisturize dry, cracking feet to prevent sores. Use powder to control moisture that can result in blisters.
• To prevent injury, wear protective, well-fitting shoes and socks at all times, even in the house. Change socks daily and more often if your feet get wet or sweaty.
Avoid socks with holes or seams. Sometimes
diabetic shoes are prescribed to avoid pressure and rubbing on the feet.
• Get regular foot exams from a foot and ankle surgeon, which can reduce amputation risk by 45-85%. The surgeon can also screen feet for loss of protective sensation.
• Manage your diabetes. Out-of-control blood sugar levels can lead to nerve cell
If you do experience a non-healing ulcer, talk to your foot and ankle surgeon right away about innovative technologies that stimulate healing.
Groundbreaking approaches include stem cell therapy, the use of bioengineered skin substitutes to accelerate growth of healthy skin, and negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) to promote healing and enable healthy, new tissue to grow.
Today, foot and ankle surgeons rarely do a skin graft without NPWT. Skin grafting for foot ulcers has also advanced.
damage, making it harder to detect foot problems. Look for telltale signs that an ulcer may be developing:
• Swelling. The foot or ankle may look puffy or engorged and larger than the other.
• Temperature. Cold feet might mean a circulatory issue, whereas hot feet might mean infection.
• Color changes. Redness and even other colors might appear before an ulcer forms.
• Calluses. If a callus changes colors or develops dark, “dried blood” colored spots, it may be time to have a foot and ankle surgeon offer a proper diagnosis.
Ask your foot and ankle surgeon about innovative treatments:
Surgeons now use advanced reconstructive surgery and grafting techniques to promote wound healing and decrease wound recurrence.
The success rate of these advanced therapies is high, providing substantial improvement over treatments of the not-too-distant past, when doctors would clean and bandage the wound and hope for the best.
“Thanks to the many advances in diabetic foot care, patients today are having simpler surgeries, avoiding amputations, and getting back to everyday life sooner than ever before,” says Dr. Steinberg.

Life is full of changes, transitions, growth—and sometimes disruptions. It’s always the right perfect time to consider a universal life insurance policy that offers flexibility and options catered to your needs. According to Bankers Life, a national life and health insurance brand, there are six essential questions when considering if a univer-
sal life insurance policy is right for you.
What is universal life insurance?
Universal life insurance is a type of permanent life insurance that offers lifelong protection with the unique flexibility to adjust your coverage and premium amounts. Similar to
other forms of permanent life insurance, universal life builds cash value that enables you to accumulate funds on a tax-deferred basis.
How do universal life insurance premiums work?
One of the major advantages of universal life insurance is the flex-
The stakes of the upcoming 2024 election are high for parents, infants, toddlers and families across the country, with such issues as child care, paid leave, maternal health, Head Start and more at an inflection point.
“If policymakers don’t take action to address these issues, young children and families will suffer. We have to get it right.
Individuals, advocates and organizations can take action between now and the election to help ensure policymakers know what babies need,” says Miriam Calderon, chief policy officer at ZERO TO THREE, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring every child has a strong start in life and a member of the National Collaborative for Infants & Toddlers (NCIT).
Why is this issue so important?
The earliest years, including the prenatal period, substantially impact lifelong health and wellbeing.
According to the Harvard University Center on the Developing Child, more than 1 million new neural connections are formed every second in the first few years of life.
These are the connections that build brain architecture—the foundation upon which all later learning, behavior and health depend.
The environments and experiences of young children affect not just the developing brain, but also physical growth and other physiological systems, including heart and lung function, digestion, and the ability to fight infections.
“Babies and toddlers only get one chance at a strong start in life,” says Calderon.
How can individuals and organizations take action?
Everyone from professional advocates to parents to concerned citizens can use ZERO TO THREE’s Election Toolkit to take action dur-
ibility to adjust your premiums.
ing this election cycle at the local, state and national level.
Individuals can register to vote and spend time learning about each candidate’s position on matters that impact families.
They can also reach out to the various campaigns in their voting district and let them know that affordable, comprehensive childhood and family services will be a priority issue for them at the ballot box in November.
Individuals can also express their endorsement of policies that support infants, toddlers and their families by signing this petition from NCIT: https://bit.ly/NCITpetition.
Nonprofit organizations should also work toward educating both the public and candidates on the issues, however, it’s important that they understand the do’s and don’ts of working with elected officials and candidates for public office.
NCIT’s full toolkit, available at ncit.org, is a good resource for navigating this election cycle.
“Babies can’t vote, but you can,” says Calderon.
“To reach our goal of ensuring every infant, toddler and expectant parent has what they need to thrive, we need an active and engaged electorate that is willing to make their voices heard and an army of advocates prepared to stand up for children and families.” (StatePoint)
During times when you have extra money available, you can contribute more than your minimum premium, and the surplus will be added to your cash value and accrue interest over time.
On the other hand, if finances are tight and your policy has accumulated a high enough cash value, you can reduce or even skip premium payments without the threat of terminating your coverage.
How does universal life cash value grow?
Universal life insurance builds cash value over time through your deposits and the interest earned on your contributions. Some policies provide a guaranteed minimum interest rate, such as 3%, while others might offer a smaller minimum interest rate, such as 1%, but include the potential for higher growth linked to the S&P 500.
Based on your specific policy, you can access your cash value through loans or withdrawals to help support your financial goals. It’s crucial to understand that with certain universal life insurance policies, the cash value isn’t passed along with your death benefit; you must withdraw the money while you’re alive.
How does a universal life insurance death benefit work?
Depending on insurer and product, universal life insurance can offer unique death benefit options. Some policies give you the option to decrease your death benefit if you
require less coverage in the future. Other insurers offer the option to increase your death benefit as your needs evolve. In either case, death benefits are typically tax-free for named beneficiaries.
What are some universal life insurance considerations?
Of all the life insurance products available, universal life insurance offers you the most control. However, this flexibility requires some degree of policy management on your part. If you choose to skip or lower your premium payments, you must ensure that your policy has enough cash value. Otherwise, your coverage could lapse if it isn’t adequately funded. If you’re interested in permanent life insurance that features consistent premiums, a stable death benefit, and access to cash value, then a whole life insurance policy may be a better fit for you.
Is universal life insurance right for you?
If you’re unsure what type of life insurance policy is best for your needs and budget, an agent can walk you through your options and help you build a strategy that helps protect your financial security and peace of mind. For more information, reach out to a Bankers Life agent or visit bankerslife.com.
Evaluating these six key questions is the first step in determining if a universal life insurance policy aligns with your financial goals and will ensure that you’re making an informed decision that protects your future. (StatePoint)

Adding an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) to your property can increase the value of your home, become a source of rental income, or help you expand your living space for your adult children or parents.
If you don’t know what an ADU is, you’re in good company. A 2023 Freddie Mac survey found that 71% of respondents were unfamiliar with the concept. ADUs are often known as in-law apartments, granny flats, carriage houses or secondary suites. According to Freddie Mac, here’s why investing in adding an ADU may be worth it:
The basics: An ADU is a smaller, independent residential structure built on the same lot as a single-family home. To qualify as an ADU, the additional living area needs to include a kitchen, bathroom and separate entrance.
Common examples include a dwelling over a detached or attached garage, a suite above the main floor of the home, a basement apartment, or a detached structure such as a guesthouse or backyard cottage.
The benefits: Building an ADU on your
property may contribute to the supply of affordable housing in your area, but it also has a wealth of benefits for you, the homeowner.
It can boost the value of your home by as much as 35%, and become a potential source of extra income if you rent your ADU to a tenant. An ADU can also make for a great home office, guest house or workshop, or be a good solution if your adult children are returning to live with you, or you are the caretaker to aging or disabled relatives.
Eligibility: Before adding an ADU to your home, you will need to learn about the zoning codes that apply to your property. Ordinances and policies vary by location and change frequently.
Make sure you understand any federal, state or local laws involved with renting your ADU. Discussing this with an attorney is one option. To find your zoning code, check your local government’s website or reach out to your local zoning or building code office.
Financing: You should create a construction budget and consider how you will pay for a new ADU or renovations to an exist-
ing ADU. The good news is that you don’t necessarily need to pay the expenses upfront. There are loans designed to help you pay for improvements to your home.
For example, Freddie Mac CHOICERenovation is a financing solution that can provide you with funding to add an ADU on your property. Speak with your lender about the financing options available to you and which may best suit your needs.
To learn more about home equity and reno-
vating your home, visit My Home by Freddie Mac.
Whether you’re looking for a way to increase your property value or create a living space for a loved one, adding an ADU can be a rewarding investment.
While navigating zoning laws, renovation budgets and landlord responsibilities may seem daunting, there are many resources available to guide you through the process. (StatePoint)

It’s a common misconception that once fall rolls around, perennials simply go dormant and don’t require maintenance until spring. But, fall is actually the perfect time to show perennials love.
In a recent Backyard Smart video, the lawn and garden experts at Exmark give the lowdown on prepping perennials for cold weather so you can enjoy beautiful blooms come spring. Here’s what to know:
The Benefits of Dividing Perennials: When plants become overcrowded, they compete for essential resources like water, air, and nutrients, which can hinder their growth. Dividing perennials helps distribute plants across your yard, maintaining a healthy size, preventing overcrowding, and reducing the risk of disease.
When to Divide Perennial Plants: Generally, fall’s the best time to divide perennial plants that bloom in spring and summer. (Conversely, spring’s the best time to divide fallblooming plants.) But if you’re
planning on dividing in fall, don’t wait too long! Get outside about four to six weeks before the ground freezes, or else your plants will be in for a rough winter. Careful! Not every perennial needs to be divided every year. Most need it every three to five years, and some don’t need it at all. Do your research before you begin.
How to Divide Perennials: Make the necessary preparations to ensure your perennials properly take to their new homes. First, thoroughly water your plants a day or two beforehand and cut them back so you can clearly see what you’re dealing with. Then, head out on a cloudy, dry day and get to work.
Dig up plants around the roots and gently lift them out of the ground, knocking away loose dirt and debris. For best results, dig outside the outermost part of plants that water drips from. You can either gently pull apart the roots with your hands, cut into them with a knife or spade, or use two gardening forks to wedge plants in half.
Various perennials have different roots systems, so read up on the best method for the species.
You can typically get four to six new sections from a single plant. Just make sure each division has three to five shoots and a substantial, healthy root system. Afterwards, you’re free to plant your new divisions, rearrange existing beds, or share new plants with family or friends!
Water and Cut Back: Even if you’re not dividing your perennials, it’s good to get one last thorough watering in before the first freeze. Leading up to that point,
gradually wean perennials from regular watering to monthly watering throughout fall.
The general rule of thumb is to cut perennials back once they start to fade. However, there are exceptions. Some perennials should be left alone. Make sure you know what’s in your garden before beginning.
Feeding and Mulching: Once plants are situated, it’s time to layer up. Clear off old mulch so that the soil is exposed, and remove any weeds or grass peeking through. Then, spread on a 1-2inch thick compost layer, followed
by an equally thick mulch layer. The compost will gradually break down and release nutrients, promoting better root growth, better soil pH and hardier plants come spring. The mulch provides insulation while protecting soil from erosion and compaction.
Be on the Lookout: Cold weather doesn’t necessarily mean pests take a break from making a meal of plants. Many—such as slugs—will chow down on anything your garden has to offer, so stay attentive! Before mulching, lay down slug bait to send them packing.

The nuclear-armed neighbors struck a deal earlier this week on patrolling the frontier, which then paved the way for the first formal talks in five years between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Russia.
“According to the recently agreed solution between India and China … their frontline armies are implementing relevant work, with smooth progress so far,” Lin Jian, a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry said.
In New Delhi, a government official aware of the details said troops on both sides had started withdrawing from the areas of Depsang and Demchok, the last remaining points where they had stood faceto-face.
The source spoke on condition of
anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to the media on the issue.
The Indian army official said the returning troops would also remove structures such as huts and tents and take back vehicles they had brought to positions that existed before the conflict began in April 2020.
The two forces can then resume patrolling along the frontier as they did before the stand-off, the official added.
Neither side has made public details of the new pact, which is expected to help improve political and business ties damaged by a deadly military clash in 2020, when 20 Indian and four Chinese troops died in clashes in the Galwan Valley.
The two sides had earlier pulled back troops from five other face-off
points, but the last such withdrawal took place over two years ago.
But officials in India said that New Delhi would still be cautious and is ready to only take baby steps towards boosting economic ties with Beijing, given the trust deficit of the last four years.
India had severed direct air links with China, banned hundreds of Chinese mobile applications, and added layers of vetting on Chinese investments, virtually blocking all major proposals from the likes of BYD and Great Wall Motors.
Two Indian government sources said that India would now consider opening up the skies and fast tracking visa approvals to complement the recent easing of tensions, but New Delhi is not yet ready to reverse all the steps it took against Beijing any time soon. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

The latest devices are packed with pricey new features, like advanced AI capabilities, call transcription and displays large enough to be worthy of gaming and binge-watching. And while they’re also getting more durable, they’re not indestructible, according to new research.
For the past 13 years, Allstate Protection Plans has conducted a series of breakability tests to determine the strength of the latest and greatest devices.
The mobile protection plan provider recently tested the new iPhone 16 Pro Max, which along with boasting a more contextual Siri, AI-driven writing tools and AI-powered image generation, has a display made of a ceramic-shield material that is said by Apple to be two times tougher than any smartphone glass.
If you’ve sprung for this new model or are thinking of doing so, you may be wondering how durable it actually is and how to protect your investment. Here to guide you are the results of Allstate Protection Plans Breakability Drop Test:
Front-down Drop Test: After one face-down drop on a sidewalk from 6 feet, the iPhone 16 Pro Max shattered across its display and suffered scuffing along its titanium
frame. Upon impact, the display went black, then flickered white for approximately two minutes, before finally going permanently black. This rendered the device unusable. However, it’s possible the device could be saved with repair. Apple. com lists iPhone 16 Pro Max front screen repair as $379 without AppleCare.
Back-down Drop Test: After one back-down drop on a sidewalk from 6 feet, the iPhone 16 Pro Max shattered across its rear panel and suffered damage to its raised glass camera housing.
The device remained fully functional, including all camera capabilities, which is an improvement over the iPhone 15 Pro Max. However, it was not safe to handle with bare hands due to raised and loose glass. Apple.com lists iPhone 16
breasts with Seasoning Mix, pressing lightly to adhere.
3. Bake for 20 minutes or until cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165 degrees F).
Test kitchen tips: Try substituting BBQ sauce or a mixture of mayonnaise and hot sauce or sour cream in place of mayonnaise.
• 1-pound boneless chicken breasts, cut into thin strips
• 1/2 cup water
• 8 (6-inch) corn or flour tortillas, warmed
• Optional toppings: Cotija cheese, cilantro, avocado and lime wedges
Instructions:
Pro Max rear panel repair as $199 without AppleCare.
With the iPhone 16 Pro Max starting at $1,199 and repairs costing as much as $749 without AppleCare, Allstate Protection Plans highly recommends the use of phone cases and screen protectors. For added security, consumers are advised to get a mobile protection plan. For more information, visit AllstateProtectionPlans.com.
“As smartphones enter their AI era, they’re also entering a new era of durability,” said Jason Siciliano, vice president of marketing and global creative director at Allstate Protection Plans. “Nevertheless, Americans still spend billions of dollars on screen repairs every year, making it vital to continue taking steps to protect your device.” (StatePoint)
For the air fryer: Preheat to 360 degrees F for 3 minutes. Place chicken, coating-side up, in a single layer in the air fryer. Air fry 10 to 12 minutes or until cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165 degrees F).

Ingredients:
• 1 package McCormick Mexican Style Street Corn Taco Seasoning Mix, divided
• 2 tablespoons oil, divided

Breathing: You may take it for granted, but your lungs are important, and so is protecting them. No matter how old you are, you can take action to prevent certain lung conditions, like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD.
It’s a serious lung disease that makes breathing difficult and gets worse over time. COPD is less common in younger adults, but anyone can have it. People with a genetic condition known as Alpha-1 may have symptoms as early as age 20.
Consider these steps to lower your risk for COPD:
• If you smoke, get help quitting. Most people with COPD have a history of smoking. It’s not easy to quit, but your health care provider can share resources to support you.
• Try to avoid exposure to lung irritants like air pollution, dusts and chemical fumes. Some occupations put you at higher risk for COPD.
Most people are 40 or older when symptoms start. If you have shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, chest tightness or fatigue, talk to your health care provider.
Tell them about your smoking habits, any family history of COPD and exposure to lung irritants and ask if you should be tested for COPD.
If you have COPD, the sooner you learn how to manage it, the sooner you can start to breathe better. Don’t wait. Protect your lungs for life. To learn more, visit nhlbi.nih.gov/ BreatheBetter. (Family Features)

Asked about her views on the gender gap issue in polls and why she thinks that she has more support among women than Trump, Harris responded, “I have to be honest with you, it’s not what I see in terms of my rallies, in terms of the interactions I’m having with people in communities and on the ground.
What I am seeing is in equal measure, men and women talking about their concerns about the future of our democracy; talking about the fact that they want a president who leads with optimism and takes on the challenges that we face, whether it be grocery prices or investing in small businesses or homeownership.”
She further said, “So, I’m not actually seeing that kind of disparity, and I intend to be a president for all Americans.
And that includes paying attention, yes, to a fundamental freedom that has been taken away because of Donald Trump — the freedom of a woman to make decisions about her own body — and, in equal measure, to prioritize the economic needs of individuals and families in America and what we also must do in terms of upholding our strength and standing on the global stage.”
She also spoke on the border issue and termed putting the resources into ensuring that US border is secure her “highest priority”. Harris pledged that, if elected, she will bring the bipartisan border security bill and
Even the most skilled cybersecurity expert can fall prey to today’s incredibly sophisticated phishing attempts.
Phishing can take place in a variety of ways, but recognizing these “lures” is a powerful way to defang cybercriminals:
Phishing: Traditional phishing comes in the form of a fraudulent email that encourages recipients to click on a link and provide personal data. Often the subject lines are designed to entice the receiver with an interesting headline, timely topic or urgent request.
Smishing: An attacker sends a text prompting the recipient to click a link or call a number for more information. If the link is clicked, the user downloads malicious software to their phone.
Vishing: An attacker uses the telephone–or
voice–to gain access to sensitive information for financial gain. The criminal usually poses as someone they are not, such as another employee, technical support person or someone representing a government agency.
Quishing: An attacker creates a fake QR code and uses it to direct victims to a malicious website that prompts them to enter their personal or financial information.
Ultimately, the easiest way for a cybercriminal to steal your information is to trick you into sharing it.
Their fraudulent communications will often look official and appear to have come from a trusted source. However, there are warning signs to watch out for. Pause and ask yourself the following questions before responding: Do you know the person who sent you the
message? The source of an email or text can easily be forged, making it seem that a request is coming from someone you know.
If something seems off or if the sender is asking for money or personal information, contact them through a different channel than the original message to confirm the message came from them.
Does the message create a sense of urgency? Criminals will often try to rush you into making an unwise decision.
An example of such a message may read, “confirm your login details in the next 24 hours using the link below or your account will be suspended.” Always take the time necessary to think through your response and confirm legitimacy. (Continued On Page 13)
sign it into law.
When asked whether construction of a southern border wall will continue in her administration, Harris stated, “I will tell you that my highest priority is to put the resources into ensuring that our border is secure, which is why I’ve been very clear: I’m going to bring back up, as president, that bipartisan border security bill and make sure that it is brought to my desk so I can sign it into law.”
She further said, “The biggest issue that we have right now is that Donald Trump has stood in the way of what would have been a proven part of the solution to the bigger problem, which is that we have a broken immigration system in America, and we need to fix it.
And we have the tools at hand, but we have on the other side of this election, Donald Trump, who would prefer to run on a problem instead of fixing a problem. I intend to fix the problem in a way that is just about practical solutions that are within our arms reach if we have the commitment to do it.”

DETROIT, MI (ANI) – Rap icon Eminem appeared at a rally for the Kamala HarrisTim Walz campaign ahead of the US presidential elections on October 21, introducing former president Barack Obama at an event in his hometown of Detroit.
After speeches from Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, former Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson, Michigan Senate contender Elissa Slotkin, Detroit City Councilperson Mary Sheffield, and Michigan Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow, Eminem took to the stage.
In his brief speech, he highlighted the importance of the election for the future of democracy, according to Variety. Walking up to the podium to his uplifting 2010 Grammy-winning hit “Not Afraid,” Eminem said, “Going into this election, the spotlight is on us more than ever, and I think it’s important to use your voice, so I’m encouraging everybody to get out and vote, please.
I also think that people shouldn’t be afraid to express their opinions, and I don’t think anyone wants an America where people are worried about retribution, or what people will do if you make your opinion known.

Planning to update your home siding this year? If you’re like many Americans, you’ll likely stick to neutral hues.
In the third annual national survey recently conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of Alside, a leader in exterior building products, American homeowners reaffirmed offwhite/cream as the most popular siding color (18%) if they were going to update the color of their home exterior in 2025 – extending its reign for three consecutive years. Understated elegance continues to dominate the market, with 42% of American homeowners saying they would go for a timeless, neutral look if choosing an exterior home color in 2025.
“The persistent preference for neutral and classic aesthetics like off-white and cream speaks to the
palette’s versatility and its ability to enhance curb appeal without overpowering the overall design

Does the offer seem too good to be true? Treat any messages announcing you’ve won money, a prize or the opportunity to purchase an item at a significant discount as suspicious.
Does the message ask you to click on a link or open an attachment? Be particularly wary of emails from people or organizations you don’t know urging you to click on a link or open an attachment. Doing so can lead to malware being installed on your device.
• First, check to determine that the QR code has not been tampered with, such as a sticker placed on top of the original code.
Does the telephone call ask for personal or financial account information?
If you receive a call that just doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts.
Hang up and call the customer service line from their official company website.
Does the message ask you to scan a QR code? As QR codes become more common in daily transactions, utilize these tips when scanning a code:
• Check the URL to make sure the code is sending you to the intended site and that the site looks authentic. Look for typos or misplaced letters.
• Exercise caution when entering information on a site accessed via a QR code and avoid making payments; manually enter a secure URL to complete a payment.
• Do not download an app from a QR code. Instead, search for the app via your device’s app store.
• If you receive a QR code from someone you know, reach out to them through a known number or address to verify that they sent you the code.

of a home,” said Ryan Gibson, business director, Vinyl & Composite Cladding.
“These hues are less likely to become outdated or decrease your home’s resale value, making them a smart choice no matter which part of the United States you live in. They also provide a solid foundation for designing a home that allows for a more personal touch, giving accent colors and features space to make a statement.”
Conversely, bold colors are the least likely to be chosen by homeowners. In fact, 33% of American homeowners say one of the colors they would most likely avoid if updating their home exterior in 2025 is red.
“There is certainly a place for bolder colors. They are often used more prominently in certain architectural styles and can add a vibrant, eye-catching element when used thoughtfully. The key is to balance it with neutral tones and consider the overall style of the home and neighborhood,” added Gibson.
Breakdown of Exterior Color Preference
After off-white/cream, white (16%), light brown (13%), light gray (11%) and medium blue (8%) rounded out the top five color choices among American homeowners, if they were going to update the color of their home exterior in 2025.
Color choice doesn’t stop at siding though. When adding complementary colors to accent home exteriors, about 62% of American homeowners typically match the trim with their siding color. Other answers include:
Shutters (43%)
Porches and decks (38%)
Roofing (32%)
When asked how they would choose the exterior color, homeowners cite several key factors. In addition to going for a timeless, neutral look (42%), top answers include:
Cost (36%)
Availability (25%)
Their spouse or significant other will pick (22%)
Based on something they saw in a magazine/home improvement show (20%)
Meets HOA/local guidelines (20%)
Among homeowners, women are more likely than men to say they would go for the timeless, neutral look (48% vs. 37%) or would choose based on something they saw in a magazine/home improvement show (24% vs. 16%). Meanwhile, men are more likely than women to say their spouse or significant other will pick (28% vs. 16%).
Breakdown of Siding Material Preference
American homeowners are likely incorporating the trend of embracing warm neutrals into their specific siding material choices. Stone (25%) was the leading material preference they would choose when planning to purchase new siding. Mixed materials were a close second, with 22% of homeowners saying they would choose to mix stone, stucco or siding, perhaps for a balanced home exterior aesthetic. Vinyl (14%), vertical board and batten composite cladding (12%) and engineered wood (12%) rounded out the rest of the top five material choices.

During the fall and winter months, respiratory infections such as flu, COVID-19 and RSV can surge. People who are vaccinated lower their risk of getting seriously ill and needing medical care if they get infected. About 70% of adults in the United States said they probably or definitely will get a flu shot, and more than 50% said they probably or definitely will get an updated COVID-19 vaccine. While many people are ready to get this season’s vaccines, others might still have questions.
“It is normal for people to have questions about vaccines,” said Peter Marks, MD, PhD, director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, which oversees and reviews vaccine clinical trials. “It’s important for everyone to know that all vaccines go through extensive testing before they are approved and that following approval, they are carefully monitored to identify any safety concerns so that they can be addressed quickly. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers have taken part in respiratory vaccine trials. The results tell us that these vaccines are safe and effective in preventing severe disease caused by flu, COVID-19 and
Here are some ways to talk about the importance of this season’s vaccines with a family member or friend who is unsure about getting vaccinated.
Hear them out. When talking about vaccination, it’s important to make others feel heard. There are many reasons why people may have questions and concerns about vaccines or even the health care system in general. Listen to their thinking and try not to judge. They want to know their thoughts and feelings matter.
Focus on the facts. Instead of calling out vaccine myths, focus on vaccine truths. Concentrating on myths can cause them to become the topic of your conversation. Instead, speak about the benefits of vaccines. For instance, you can mention vaccines cut your risk of being hospitalized for flu or COVID-19 by about half.
Humans aren’t the only ones who look forward to autumn harvest. Fall brings a bounty of natural foods for our feathered friends, too.
But while they’re feasting on fall’s cornucopia of delicacies, birds are also planning ahead, taking note of yards with bird feeders that can help them weather winter’s cold.
Many of birds’ favorite foods are actually more abundant in fall. Summer weeds ripen with seeds by October.
Many berries only begin to emerge in late summer or early winter, and insects are plentiful.
You may think there’s no need to feed birds during the fall, but if you want them to find your home in winter, start feeding in autumn.
The birds who visit feeders in fall are scouting, becoming familiar with feeding stations and making decisions on which backyards they’ll visit this winter.
The feed you put out in fall lets birds know they’ll be welcomed
and fed in your backyard when seriously cold weather arrives – and they no longer have the luxury of exploring for food.
Winter weather is hard on birds. Their calorie requirements increase, food becomes hard to find, snow covers up seeds and ice storms seal away tree buds and wild fruits.
Tiny birds must eat one-third to three-quarters of their weight each day. When temperatures dip below
zero, easy meals at a feeder can mean the difference between life and death.
An important rule of fall and winter feeding is to be prepared. By stocking up now on premium bird seeds and feed, bird lovers can help secure a wholesome food source
without having to brave stormy weather.
It’s important to stock your feeders with high-quality foods that provide birds with the most fat, nutrients and energy.
Look for a feed like Cole’s that packs nutrition, preserves freshness and gives you the most feed for your dollar.
For example, Cole’s Wild Bird Products’ Oil Sunflower is more than 99% pure and cleaned four times to ensure there are more seeds and fewer sticks in each bag.
Feed is also nitrogen-purge packaged, just like potato chips, to ensure freshness and insect-free feed.
In addition to seed, serve up some suet either in the form of Suet cakes for non-seed eating birds or suet mixed with seed. (Continued On Page 14)
Ask if they need help getting vaccinated. Sometimes, people just need some help to find, schedule and get a vaccination. You can help them find a vaccine location at Vaccines.gov. They may also need help finding child care or figuring out whether they can take time off from work. Offering a ride or accompanying them can also be helpful, especially if the closest vaccination site is far away. If English is not their primary language, offer to help them schedule the appointment and arrange for a medical translator if needed. When it’s easier to get vaccinated, people are more likely to take this important step to help protect their health.
Having open, honest and supportive conversations about vaccines with family members and friends can make all the difference. For more information, visit cdc.gov/ RiskLessDoMore or talk to your doctor.
Flu, COVID-19 and RSV Vaccines Help People Risk Less Severe Illness and Do More of What They Enjoy
This season’s vaccines are now available. Everyone 6 months and older should get an updated flu and COVID-19 vaccine. Everyone ages 75 and older, or 60 and older with certain health conditions such as such as heart disease, lung disease, obesity or diabetes, should get an RSV vaccine if they have not been vaccinated for RSV before. For certain people, the risk of serious respiratory illness remains high. These include adults ages 65 and older, residents of long-term care facilities, pregnant people, people with certain health conditions and those living in rural areas. People in some racial and ethnic groups, including people who are Black or Hispanic, are also at higher risk.
People who are not up to date on flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccines can reduce their risk by getting their 2024-25 vaccines as soon as they can. To get started, visit Vaccines.gov.

Or try Suet Kibbles, bursting with berry flavor and loaded with energy for increased stamina. These feed choices provide fat and a high-protein energy source to assist wild birds in weathering winter and may actually boost their chance of survival.
Just as birds need food year-round, they also look for water. This can be tricky in regions where water spends the winter as ice, but bird lovers can still help in a few ways. Experts suggest leaving icicles on the eaves to provide a regular source of water for birds that drink drops as the icicles melt.
Birds are drawn to running water sounds, so spritzers or small fountains are beneficial. In the winter, try using quality bird bath heaters to keep water from freezing, plus
they’re more convenient than setting out water every day.
Don’t worry about the birds if you must leave home for a while in winter. Birds are familiar with food sources disappearing. It might take them a while to rediscover your feeders when you return, but
they’ll be back, grateful for your assistance. For more ideas to help birds eat well through winter, and to learn about more feed choices, visit coleswildbird.com.

(Continued From Page 01) The two leaders shook hands against a backdrop featuring their national flags, and both stressed the importance of handling their disputes. This was in stark contrast to Modi going in for the bear hug of all leaders. This was the first structured interaction between the two leaders in five years and followed the two countries reaching an agreement on resuming regular patrolling along the Line of Actual Controlin eastern Ladakh. The border standoff between India and China began in eastern Ladakh along the LAC in 2020, sparked by Chinese military action. Xi, whose country’s economy is facing turbulence said the two countries “should carefully
handle differences and disagreements and facilitate each other’s pursuit of development aspirations.”
Modi said, “We are having a formal meeting after five years. We believe that the India-China relationship is very important not only for our people but also for global peace, stability and progress. We welcome the consensus reached on the issues that have arisen in the last four years on the border. Maintaining peace and stability on the border should remain our priority. Mutual trust, mutual respect and mutual sensitivity should remain the basis of our relations.” (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

Cold and flu season is here. The best way to battle cold and flu season is to prevent coming down with anything at all. While it’s impossible to stay entirely safe from germs, sniffles and coughs, there are a few healthy habits you can incorporate for extra protection this year.
Along with the guidance you receive from your health care provider, consider these dietary and lifestyle recommendations to support your immune system naturally.
Commit to a Healthier Diet: Essential for optimizing your immune system, eating a healthy diet consisting of more foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes and whole grains is recommended by experts. These foods contain beneficial plant compounds linked to health benefits in humans. Case in point: fresh grapes.
Natural grape compounds, including antioxidants and other polyphenols, may help protect the health and function of cells. At the most basic level, healthy cells are the foundation of good health.
Making simple swaps such as choosing fresh California grapes instead of processed snacks or adding grapes into favor-
ite recipes for a healthy boost are tasty ways to add these beneficial compounds.
Studies suggest some grape compounds may positively influence immune function, including resveratrol and certain flavonoids. Additional studies show adding heart-healthy grapes to your daily diet can help support brain, colon and skin health.
Grapes are also a good source of vitamin K, which may help support lung health. Incorporate the health benefits of grapes into your
diet with an easy, convenient recipe like Grape and Brussels Sprout Slaw, perfect for eating on its own or pairing with a favorite protein such as grilled chicken breast.
Prioritize Basic Hygiene: Preventive practices can help you avoid germs, protecting yourself and others at the same time. Frequently wash your hands using soap and water, limit contact with others who may be sick and cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or elbow while coughing or sneezing.
Stay Active: Cold and flu season lines up with brisk temperatures, often making it more difficult to get outside for exercise. Find an activity you enjoy like moderate-intensity walking, jogging, biking or playing an aerobic sport. The “Journal of Sport and Health Science” reports exercise can help improve immune response and reduce inflammation,
From eerie jack-o-lanterns and creepy cobwebs to skeletons, faux bats and ghosts, there are many classic Halloween decorations that can help give your home a scary seasonal makeover.
Take your seasonal decor beyond the black and orange this year with these imaginative ideas to spook up your home this Halloween.
Gothic Candle Arrangements
Transform your home into an eerie abode with gothic candle arrangements on your mantel or dining room table. Use black or deep red candles in ornate candle holders – like skeleton hands or ravens – to create a haunting ambiance. For an added touch of spookiness, incorporate elements like faux cobwebs, skulls or antique mirrors.
Creative Pumpkin Displays
Pumpkins are a quintessential part of Halloween decor, and there are countless ways to creatively display them on your porch, mantel or as a table centerpiece. Carve intricate designs or spooky faces into pumpkins and place them through-
out your living space, using LED lights inside them as a safer alternative to candles. If carving isn’t really your thing, paint pumpkins with eerie designs or embellish them with glitter, rhinestones or lace. Combining pumpkins with other autumnal elements like leaves, acorns and gourds can create a stunning seasonal display.
Spooky Floral Arrangements
Arrange dark, moody flowers like black dahlias, deep purple calla lilies and bloodred roses for a striking Halloween display. Add dried branches, black feathers and faux
making it a key way to prepare your body to fight back.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: Staying hydrated helps your immune system by keeping the body’s defenses functioning properly. In addition to drinking water, you can increase hydration by eating foods with high water content like grapes, which contain about 82% water.
Manage Stress: You can help control stress – which has a negative impact on overall health and wellness – in a number of ways. Practice deep breathing or meditation, engage in activities and hobbies that bring joy and develop nighttime habits that promote good sleep.
If snacking in the evening, choose foods such as grapes that are a natural source of melatonin, a compound which helps regulate sleep cycles. Talk with someone you trust, like a friend, family member or mental health professional, to help relieve stress.
Visit GrapesFromCalifornia.com to find more ways to support your immune health.
Grape and Brussels Sprout Slaw Servings: 6
1 bag (12 ounces) shredded Brussels sprouts
2/3 cup finely shredded red cabbage
2 cups red Grapes from California, halved lengthwise
spiderwebs for an extra spooky touch. Place arrangements in vintage vases or urns to enhance their gothic appeal and incorporate Halloween-themed elements like mini skulls, bats or ravens.
Unique and Unusual Centerpieces
For a truly unique Halloween centerpiece, consider creating a display of creepy curiosities. Use items like antique apothecary jars filled with faux eyeballs, preserved insects or miniature skeletons. Arrange these items on a tray or in a glass cabinet and also incorporate things like vintage books, old photographs and other oddities that enhance the eerie vibe such as faux spiderwebs, candles and skulls.

Keezhadi, or Keeladi, is a Sangam period settlement site, where excavation are carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India and the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology.
This site is located near the town of Keezhadi in Sivaganga district, Tamil Nadu, about 12 km southeast of Madurai. The settlement lies on the bank of the Vaigai River and it reflects the ancient culture of Tamil Nadu.
Epigraphist V. Vedachalam, who served as a domain expert for the excavation, dated the excavated remains between 6th century BCE and 3rd century BCE.
Various archaeological residues were found when plowing the land around the site. A survey was conducted for the study, which found that this ancient settlement was less than two and a half meters below the ground level
The area currently being excavated is spread over 80 acres with a 3.5 km radius. The ancient towns of Kondagai and Manalur are also part of this region. Initially, this site was estimated to be from the period between 5th century BCE and 3rd century CE. Two samples were sent for carbon dating from this excavation site for confirmation in 2017. The results that came in July 2017 confirmed that the samples were from about 2,200 years ago (3rd century BCE). Radiocarbon dating of samples obtained from the fourth phase of excavation revealed that one of the artifacts was from 6th century BCE. In 2017, the ASI sent two samples from Keezhadi to Beta Analytic, a Miami-based radiocarbon dating laboratory. The laboratory dated the samples to be about 2,300 – 2600 years old (from 3rd century BCE). In 2018, six carbon samples collected from the fourth phase of excavation were sent to Beta Analytic in the United States for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) dating. It was found that one sample collected at a depth of 353 cm goes back to 580 BCE.
An archaeological survey was first
conducted in 2013, by Archaeological Survey of India, in the vicinity of the Vaigai river from Theni district to Ramanathapuram district where the river meets the sea. During the study, 293 sites, including Keezhadi, were identified to have archaeological residues. The first three phases of excavation at Keezhadi were conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India while the phases after that were conducted by the Tamil Nadu Archaeology Department.

Almost 48 square pits have been cut and various structures and artifacts have been found, including frosts, brick walls, roof tiles, pottery, mimic accessories, skeletal tools, iron Vel, and Tamil-Brahmi letter-etched plates. This place is considered to be Pandyan dynasty’s city called “Perumanalur”, the pioneer of literature.
The use of fired brick, the size of the building complex, an array of pots placed in such a way that it must have been used either as a lamp or for painting, and other findings suggest that the settlement is of a more civilized population than was previously suspected during the Sangam period.
Ancient earthenware and ring wells have been found. Archaeologist Velappan said that this proves the ancient tradition of Tamils indicating that they used these wells in river shores and ponds for water. Brick buildings are considered rare in ancient times but a large number of brick buildings have been found.
Ceramic types like Black-and-Red ware, Black ware, Black Polished ware and Red ware were found. Analysis of the Black-and-Red ware pottery revealed that the reason for its black colour is due to the use of carbon material and hematite was used for the red colour. Pottery was fired in kilns at the temperature to 1100°c to produce the typical Black-and-Red ware pottery.
The rouletted, arretine-type ceramics brought by merchants demonstrate business connections during Indo-Roman trade. It is noteworthy that such products have been discovered. Furthermore, black and red parchment fragments and white-colored black, red papillae and reddish-pitted pieces have also been unearthed. There are Tamil words engraved on the potteries that mention the names of individ-
In the fourth phase of excavations at Keezhadi, 72 potsherds with Tamil-Brahmi script were discovered at the site. Some of these artifacts have inscribed graffiti marks, similar to graffiti marks which some believe to have evolved from the Indus script. According to T. Udhayachandran, the artifacts found at Keezhadi excavation site may point to a link between the scripts of the Indus Valley civilization and Tamil-Brahmi. Based on these marks, and one Keezhadi findings of the fourth phase which was dated to 580 BCE, R. Sivanantham and M. Seran argue that the date of the earliest attestation of Tamil-Brahmi can be pushed back to the 6th century BCE, a few
centuries older than Dhamma Lipi (Prakrit in the Brahmi Script) of Ashokan Edicts, which is stated to be dated from 268 BC to 232 BC.
These claims have been challenged. It is not clear whether the potsherds containing inscriptions were found in the same archaeological layer as the 6th century samples, and University of Calcutta archaeologist Bishnupriya Basak said that “This unfortunately is not clear from the report and is very crucial,” adding that the issues of “layer, period and absolute dates” needed clarity. Dravidian University archaeologist E. Harsha Vardhan said that a single report was not enough to “state scientifically that the TamilBrahmi script belongs to the sixth century BC”.
(Continued From Page 01) Their momentum carried into July when the team returned to Dallas to clinch their second championship at the Independence Cup, a highly anticipated event organized by DYCL. The Blasters demonstrated once again why they are a team to watch, displaying both precision and teamwork.
The team next traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, where they captured their third title at the Summer Derby
(Div B), part of the prestigious Elite Junior Championship (EJrC) organized by AMLCA. The Blasters showcased their versatility and adaptability, adding yet another championship to their growing list of achievements.
The Blasters capped off their unbeaten run over Labor Day weekend, taking home their fourth title by defeating the NACA Falcons by 20 runs in the intense final game Div-A tournament for EJrC by AMLCA. With this latest victory, the Austin Blasters have now amassed an unblemished record, an impressive feat for a team competing across the country and against some of the toughest young talent in the country.
The Formula for Success: Teamwork and Long-Term Vision
The Austin Blasters’ youth teams are managed by WCI Academy, a cricket development program helmed by founder and head coach Alok Singh. Coach Singh attributes the team’s remarkable success to a combination of teamwork, cricket intelligence, and a focus on longterm player development.
“Our players have an innate flair for the game, and we work hard to nurture that with a fearless approach to competition,” Singh said. “This success is built on their hard work, the cohesion within the team, and the commitment to fostering talent for the future.”
The Austin Blasters’ success is emblematic of the growing influence of youth cricket in the United States, particularly in non-traditional cricket regions.
As the sport continues to expand across the country, teams like the Blasters are leading the charge, inspiring young athletes and making their mark on the national stage.
With an unbeaten record and four titles in 2024, the Austin Blasters’ story is far from over. As the team continues to grow and evolve, they are setting a new standard for excellence in youth cricket, both in Texas and beyond.

If you’re enrolled in Medicare, it’s important to remember Medicare Open Enrollment runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7 each year. This is the time for people with Medicare to compare their prescription drug and health coverage options for the upcoming year.
The new prescription drug law is lowering out-of-pocket costs on covered prescriptions. New in 2025, all Medicare plans will include a $2,000 annual cap on what you pay out-of-pocket for prescription drugs under Medicare Part D.
The cap only applies to drugs that are covered by your plan, so it’s more important than ever to review your plan options to make sure your drugs are covered.
That means you will not pay more than $2,000 in 2025 on prescription drugs covered under Medicare prescription drug coverage – that includes expensive prescription drugs to treat cancer, chronic illnesses and more.
This is in addition to improvements already in effect due to the prescription drug law including a $35 cap on a month’s supply of each covered insulin product – and no out-of-pocket costs for recommended adult vaccines covered under Part D, including the shingles vaccine.
Also starting in 2025, you can choose to spread your out-of-pocket drug costs across the calendar year instead of paying all at once at the pharmacy. It’s called the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan. You can opt in with your plan in advance of Jan. 1 and throughout 2025.
How to Compare Prescription Drug and Health Coverage Options Medicare.gov is the official source for information about Medicare and Open Enrollment. Start here to get unbiased information to find the type of coverage that best meets your needs.
Comparing prescription drug and health coverage options is easy at Medicare.gov. Get started by clicking on “Find Plans.” Then enter your ZIP code, current prescrip-
tions and favorite pharmacies. You will see a side-by-side comparison of the total cost for all the plans in your area, including the premium and how much you’ll pay for your prescriptions. You’ll also be able to see what plans cover your prescriptions and whether some plans offer extra benefits. If you are hap-
py with your current choice, you don’t have to do anything. If you choose a new option for 2025, you can enroll on Mediare.gov.
Before you enroll in a plan, consider this advice:
• Check if your health care providers are in a plan’s network.
• Check if your prescriptions are included on a plan’s formulary and if the plan works with your pharmacy.
• Review a plan’s estimated total costs to you, including deductible and other outof-pocket costs. Remember low monthly premiums may not always be the best overall value for your specific needs.
• Check if Medicare Advantage plans offer extra benefits, like vision, hearing or dental coverage, if you need these services.
• Understand that you may need to get approval from the plan before it will cover certain services or supplies.

Throughout life, we follow traditions past, Taught since childhood, promptly practised to last. But if one questions, seeking clarity, Undermine not their curiosity.
Empower them to discover and find,
Because complacency stifles our mind.

Misses the world’s vast wonders, changing light.
What was then, may not now be suitable,
Come what may change is inevitable.
Moment by moment the Nature evolves,
Momentum ours is to progress embrace.

Beyond the changing of the leaves and less daylight, fall can bring plenty of challenges for drivers, including frosty, foggy mornings and slippery roads. To help you stay safe on the road, consider these steps to prepare your vehicle.
Inspect and Replace Wiper Blades
As fall sets in, exposure to the elements, including rain, mist and sometimes even snow, becomes more frequent, which can have a negative impact on driving conditions and your ability to clearly see
the road while behind the wheel.
Inspect your wiper blades for any signs of wear and tear, such as cracks or splits, and replace them if they’re not effectively clearing your windshield.
Check Tire Pressure and Tread
Fluctuating temperatures, like those common during the fall months, can cause your tire pressure to drop, which can affect your car’s handling and fuel efficiency. Use a tire gauge to check the pressure and inflate your tires to the
manufacturer’s recommended level, if necessary. Additionally, inspect your tires’ tread. Worn-out tread can reduce traction, especially on wet or icy roads. If your tread is below the recommended level, replace your tires for optimal safety and performance.
Top Off the Fluids
It’s important to periodically check your vehicle’s fluids, including engine oil, coolant, brake fluid and windshield washer fluid. Low levels can cause various issues, from overheating to reduced braking efficiency. Be sure to consult your vehicle’s manual if you’re unsure of the type of fluid each component requires.
Test Your Battery
Weak batteries can leave you stranded, especially in colder conditions. If your battery is more than 3 years old or shows signs of

weakness, consider having it tested to ensure it’s holding a charge and functioning correctly before the weather gets too cold.
Examine Lights and Signals
As days get shorter, you’ll likely rely more on your vehicle’s lights for visibility. Check your headlights, taillights, brake lights and
turn signals to ensure they’re working correctly. Replace any burntout bulbs and clean your lenses to improve visibility.

I think Vice President Harris supports a future for this country where these freedoms and many others will be protected and upheld. And here to tell you much more about that, President Barack Obama.”
Obama then appeared on stage to Eminem’s 2002 Oscar-winning track “Lose Yourself”. During his speech, Obama, whose love for music–especially hip-hop and rap–is well known through his popular playlists, recited the opening lines of the iconic track.
Obama jokingly said, “I thought Eminem was going to be performing, I was ready to jump out. Love me some Eminem.” It’s no surprise that Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, supports Harris and the Democrats, having endorsed the Joe BidenHarris campaign back in 2020 with a campaign ad featuring his song “Lose Yourself”.
Eminem has frequently criticised former president Donald Trump and the Republican Party in his music. Before the release of his ninth studio album ‘Revival’ during the BET Hip Hop Awards in October 2017, he delivered an aggressive freestyle rap titled ‘The Storm’, attacking Trump, his policies, and his supporters.
In a December 2017 interview with Complex, while promoting Revival, Eminem accused Trump of “brainwashing” his core followers into believing that “something great is going to happen.
Nothing’s happening.” The album, released in November 2017, featured several songs criticizing Trump and Republican policies, particularly “Like Home” featuring Alicia Keys and the rap-rock fusion track “Untouchable”.
Eminem’s disdain for the Republican Party extends beyond Trump. Last year, he sent a cease-and-desist letter to Republican presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy, demanding that he stop using his music after Ramaswamy performed “Lose Yourself” at the Iowa State Fair.
Back in 2004, in his fifth studio album ‘Encore’, Eminem delivered harsh lyrics against then-president George W. Bush, particularly in the tracks “Mosh” and “We As Americans”. In “Mosh”, he criticised Bush for the US’s involvement in the Iraq war. This year, Eminem has made sporadic public appearances. He released his 12th studio album, ‘The Death of Slim Shady’, on July 12, 2024.
The album, centered on the conceptual demise of his divisive rap alter-ego Slim Shady, tackle’s themes like cancel culture, ageing, and political sensitivity. It received mixed reactions from fans and critics.
Eminem, who turned 52 this month, also shared heartwarming news of becoming a grandfather to his 28-year-old daughter Hailie Jade’s child. He revealed this in the video for the track “Temporary”, featuring frequent collaborator Skylar Grey, from his latest album.

HARRISBURG, PA –Governor Josh Shapiro signed Senate Bill 402into law — officially recognizing Diwali as a state holiday in Pennsylvania while attending a Diwali, Tihar, and Bandi Chhor Diwas celebration hosted by the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Asian American & Pacific Islander Affairs in the atrium of the Keystone Building in downtown Harrisburg.
“By signing this bill into law, we are not only recognizing the importance of Diwali but also celebrating the rich cultural heritage and many contributions of the Asian American community to Pennsylvania,” said Governor Shapiro. “Diwali symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair – values that should help guide our Commonwealth. Pennsylvania is stronger because of its diversity, and this new state holiday is a powerful reflection of the inclusion, respect, and unity that we cherish in this Commonwealth.
Today, we reaffirm our commitment to honoring the traditions and cultures that make our state vibrant and dynamic.” Diwali, known as the “Festival of Lights,” is one of the most significant festivals in South Asian culture. “Diwali is the festival of lights. It is the most important festival for the Hindu, Jain, and Sikh community,” said Razin Karu, Executive Director of the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Asian American & Pacific Islander Affairs. “It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, of good over evil, of knowledge over ignorance, and of truth over falsehood.
Many Pennsylvanians with roots in India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh observe the festival of Diwali and more than 1 billion people around the world celebrate this holiday in South Asia and the diaspora around

NEW YORK, NY – Bill Gates, one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, has privately disclosed that he recently donated approximately $50 million to a nonprofit organization supporting Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign, according to a report by The New York Times. Although Gates has not publicly endorsed Harris, this donation marks a notable shift from his longstanding practice of staying out of direct political contributions.
the world. It’s a privilege to join Governor Shapiro as he signs this law to officially recognize Diwali as a state holiday in Pennsylvania.”
The legislation, sponsored by Senator Greg Rothman and Senator Nikil Saval, garnered broad bipartisan support in both the Senate and House. Representative Arvind Venkat championed companion legislation, House Bill 436, which passed in April 2023.
“Recognizing Diwali as an official state holiday celebrates our Commonwealth’s rich cultural diversity,” said Senator Rothman. “I’m grateful for Governor Shapiro’s signature on this historic legislation.” “Wherever we’re from and whatever our background, all of us deserve to have our cultures recognized and honored. As the number of Asian Americans grows steadily here in Pennsylvania and across the country, our Commonwealth’s official recognition of Diwali sends a clear message of inclusion,” said Senator Saval. “I am so proud to have worked with my colleagues in the state legislature to put Pennsylvania at the forefront by acknowledging Diwali’s deep cultural significance and inviting all people to reflect on the endless struggle of light over darkness.”
“Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is celebrated by over a billion Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists worldwide, including hundreds of thousands in Pennsylvania. It represents not only the celebration of the triumph of good over evil, but also a sacred time for families of multiple faiths to celebrate the bond that keeps them together and strengthens their connections with one another,” said Representative Venkat. Though officially designated as a state holiday, schools, government offices, and businesses are not required to close on Diwali. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)
Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, has traditionally maintained a neutral stance in politics, avoiding contributions that could align him with specific candidates. While he does not have a close relationship with Harris, Gates has praised the Biden-Harris administration for its efforts in combating climate change. Sources told The New York Times that Gates and his philanthropic foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, are concerned about potential cuts to family planning and global health programs if Donald Trump were to return to the presidency.
In response to the NYT report, Gates did not directly confirm the donation or offer an explicit endorsement of Harris. However, he acknowledged the unique stakes of the 2024 election, emphasizing his bipartisan efforts over the years but stating that “this election is different.”
Gates, who has resisted political involvement despite encouragement from Democratic allies, is reportedly facing internal pressure from his children, Rory and Phoebe Gates. Both have become Democratic donors and have urged their father to engage more actively in political giving.
Some wealthy donors backing Harris remain wary of being publicly identified with her campaign, fearing retaliation from Trump, who has threatened to target her most prominent supporters. (Courtesy: https://indiawest. com/)

NEW DELHI (ANI) – Bomb threats targeting a total of 50 domestic and international flights operated by Indian carriers between the night of October 22 and the evening of October 23 caused widespread disruption and financial losses for airlines. Major carriers, including IndiGo, Vistara, and Akasa Air, were impacted, with both domestic and international routes—such as flights to the U.S.—have been affected in this slew of threats that have been going on in India. Canada, Singapore, Nepal, have all had to deploy their security in reaction to this. One flight was even escorted by fighter jets as a precautionary measure.
In one of the most notable incidents, a bomb warning was issued for a Vistara flight traveling from Delhi to Kathmandu. The Nepal Army’s bomb disposal team was dispatched to inspect the aircraft upon its arrival. Meanwhile, Akasa Air, which also received threats, emphasized that it was following all necessary safety procedures to ensure the security of its passengers.
The extraordinary scale of the threats, most of which were posted on social media platforms like X, has had Indian officials rushing for solutions. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said in a press conference that a private network was used to post the threats and promised that the culprits will be punished.
To prevent further disruption, Naidu announced heightened security measures at airports across the country. These include increased surveillance, more thorough inspections of baggage x-ray images, and stricter passenger checklist verifications.
At a press conference in Delhi, Naidu also revealed that legislative actions are being considered to address the situation more effectively.
Proposed changes include amendments to the Aircraft Security Rules and the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against Safety of Civil Aviation Act. Naidu stressed that airlines are fully cooperating with security agencies and that passenger safety remains the top priority. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)
NEW DELHI, (REUTERS) – India and China have reached a deal on patrolling their disputed frontier to end a four-year military stand-off, the Indian foreign minister said on October 21, paving the way for improved political and business ties between the Asian giants. The news came on the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia for an October 22-24 summit of the BRICS regional grouping, during which he could hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian officials said. Relations between the world’s two most populous nations – both nuclear powers – have been strained since clashes between their troops on the largely under marketed frontier in the western Himalayas left 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers dead in 2020.
The two sides had since stopped patrolling several points along the border in the Ladakh region to avoid new confrontations while moving tens of thousands of new troops and military equipment closer to the freezing highlands. “We reached an agreement on patrolling, and with that, we have gone back to where the situation was in 2020 and we can say … the disengagement process with China has been completed,” Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said at an NDTV media conclave. The “understanding was reached only today,” he said, adding: “We always said that if you disturb the peace and tranquility how can the rest of the relationship go forward?”To avoid clashes, the two militaries will patrol contested points along the border according to an agreed schedule, a senior Indian military officer aware of the details said.
Both sides will monitor the area in Ladakh to ensure that there are no violations, the officer added. Authorities in Beijing offered no immediate response to India’s remarks. Of-
ficials in New Delhi said the pact clears the path for a likely bilateral meeting between Modi and Xi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, which will be their first since 2020.
The senior military officer said that both sides would pull back their troops a little from their current positions to avoid faceoffs but would be allowed to patrol these areas according to a schedule that is being worked out.Monthly review meetings and regular monitoring of the contested areas by both sides would ensure there are no violations, he added.
Deependra Singh Hooda, a retired senior Indian army officer who was a commander for a part of the China frontier, said that while the two sides would need fresh confidencebuilding measures, “at least the impasse has been broken”. Slow progress during talks over the last four years to end the standoff damaged business ties between the two large economies, with New Delhi tightening scrutiny of investment by Chinese firms and halting major projects. India’s tougher vetting of all Chinese investment after the clashes effectively turned away billions of dollars from the likes of carmakers BYD and Great Wall Motor and added more red tape in Indian firms’ interactions with Chinese stakeholders. However, Indian imports from China have surged 56% since the 2020 border clash, nearly doubling New Delhi’s trade deficit with Beijing to $85 billion. China remains India’s biggest source of goods and was its largest supplier of industrial products last year. Asked about the impact of the pact on trade with and investment from China, Jaishankar said: “It has just happened. There will be meetings to see what the next steps will be. I wouldn’t go so fast.”(indiawest. com)
WASHINGTON, DC – Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee is among 23 economists endorsing Vice President Harris’s economic vision, calling it “vastly better” than former President Trump’s. In an open letter, Banerjee and his peers wrote that Harris’s economic agenda “will improve our nation’s health, investment, sustainability, resilience, employment opportunities, and fairness.” Banerjee, currently the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at MIT, won the 2019 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences with Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer for their work on alleviating global poverty.
The economists criticized Trump’s economic proposals, particularly his plans to raise tariffs. “His policies, including high tariffs even on goods from our friends and allies and regressive tax cuts for corporations and individuals, will lead to higher prices, larger deficits, and greater inequality,” the letter stated.
While neither Harris nor Trump has fully unveiled their economic plans, Harris has put forward key initiatives, including combating price gouging, supporting small businesses, and offering incentives for first-time homebuyers.
In contrast, Trump’s proposals include imposing broad tariffs on imports and introducing new tax cuts, which could substantially increase the U.S. deficit, according to various analyses.
The letter also touched on U.S. debt levels, which ballooned during the pandemic under both Trump and President Biden.
The economists noted that while pandemicera stimulus contributed to inflation, “inflation has come down without a recession,” which they hailed as a significant achievement for the Biden administration. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)
