Firearm Safety Begins At Home

Firearm violence has become the leading killer of children and young adults under 24, surpassing deaths from vehicle collisions since 2017. And while daily headlines emphasize news of mass shootings, most firearms-related deaths and injuries are preventable and occur in a familiar place -- at home.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is not only calling attention to the sobering statistics, but is also offering tools for families, communities and governmental entities to help prevent gun violence. Parents can learn more at HealthyChildren.org.

Approximately 40% of U.S. households with children have firearms, of which 15% stored at least one firearm loaded and unlocked, the storage method with the highest risk.

“Firearms are pervasive in America, but we do have reason for hope,” said Dr. Lois K. Lee, a pediatric emergency medicine phy-

sician who specializes in injury prevention. “Research has revealed effective ways to prevent or reduce the risks of harm, just as our country did to improve motor vehicle safety. This is a public health epidemic that we can do something about, through a combination of regulation, legislation, education and individual steps like securely storing firearms in the home.”

who currently store their firearms unlocked instead stored their firearms and ammunition locked away separately, there would be an estimated decrease of up to 122 pediatric firearm-related fatalities and 201 injuries annually nationwide.

“You can frame this as a safety conversation and talk about food allergies and car seats, and then ask about how firearms are stored. But also think about other options if you have concerns–perhaps offer to meet at a park or museum, or invite their child over to your home to play.”

Pediatric practitioners are encouraged to counsel families, offer mental health screenings and promote secure firearm storage as part of routine visits. As with other consumer products, the AAP supports regulating firearms for safety and notes that national requirements could be established for safe storage, training, licensing, insurance coverage and registration.

State extreme risk protection order laws, also known as “red flag

laws,” which prohibit individuals at risk of harming themselves or others from purchasing or owning a firearm by a court order, are also becoming more common.

Evidence shows that the risk of injury or death is greatly reduced when firearms are securely stored, unloaded and locked, with the ammunition locked in a separate place that youth can’t access.

Unfortunately, 40% of U.S. households with children have firearms, of which 15% are stored in the least secure way. One study demonstrated that if 20% of parents

Because having firearms at home substantially increases the risk of suicide, homicide and unintentional shootings, the AAP also suggests that families consider storing firearms outside the home completely.

“Even when they’ve been trained not to touch firearms, we know that young children are curious and will often pick up a firearm–and even pull the trigger–if they find it,” Dr. Lee said. “Make sure, wherever your child is going this summer for playdates and vacation–including the homes of relatives–that you ask about how firearms are secured in the home.

Between 2015 and 2022, there were at least 2,802 unintentional shootings by children age 17 and younger. These resulted in 1,083 deaths and 1,815 nonfatal firearm injuries, nearly all among other kids. And at least 895 preschoolers and toddlers found a firearm and unintentionally shot themselves or someone else during this time.

“Ultimately, we will need a multipronged approach to substantially decrease firearm injuries and deaths among U.S. youth,” Dr. Lee said. “This is a public health epidemic that requires urgent, deliberative action. We must do better–our children deserve it.” (StatePoint)

Tips To Stay Connected During Natural Disasters

No matter where you live or what time of the year it is, individuals, families, businesses and others nationwide should be prepared for unpredictable weather and natural disasters – from hurricanes to tornadoes to wildfires. With some researchers forecasting a potentially record-breaking hurricane season and above normal risks for wildfires for some portions of the country this year, it’s important to be ready.

Effective communication is vital during disasters for receiving updates, talking with loved ones and reaching first responders. One of the most important things you can do ahead of time is learn how you can stay connected. Here are some tips from T-Mobile experts on ways you can prepare and get the information you need to stay in the know when it matters most.

• Keep phones and devices fully charged, and store back-up chargers and batteries. There’s nothing quite like losing power when your phone has a low battery, so keep

devices full of juice. And make sure you have back-up chargers, portable chargers, and/or batteries so you can keep your devices on if your power goes out.

You’ll also want to have a charger handy if you’re traveling. If you get stranded or stuck while driving, you’ll want a way to stay connected with loved ones or emergency services.

• Add important numbers in your contacts. Most of us have friends, family and coworkers programmed in our phones.

But in an emergency, you may need to contact local police, fire departments or power companies. Program these numbers now so you

don’t spend precious time looking them up during an emergency.

• Text instead of calling and keep calls short. Sometimes during a severe weather event or natural disaster, too many calls and texts at the same time can cause telecommunications networks to become congested. If you have trouble making calls, try texting instead. Text messages are more likely to get through than phone calls because they take up fewer network resources.

• If you don’t have mobile service, try Wi-Fi calling. If your power and Wi-Fi connection are still on

but your mobile service is down, you may be able to call someone via Wi-Fi. For Apple phones, go to Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling and for Android phones, go to Settings > More Connection Settings > Wi-Fi Calling.

• Stay safe and calm. Network engineers prepare for weather conditions throughout the year so they can restore service if needed as soon as possible. But hazardous conditions may cause delays. Downed trees, power outages and other obstacles can hinder restoration efforts. Engineers will make repairs as soon as it’s safe to do so.

For more information from TMobile on communications and disaster preparedness, check out www.t-mobile.com/news/ uncarrier/t-mobile-ready-to-respond.

A few simple steps can help ensure that even during natural disasters and unexpected events, you’re able to connect with first responders and the people you love. (StatePoint)

House Hunting? Here’s How To Secure A Lower Mortgage Rate

If you’re hesitant to buy a home right now due to high interest rates, you can use this time to learn how interest rates work, and to take steps to secure a lower interest rate when you are ready to buy.

Defining Mortgage Rates

A mortgage rate is the interest rate you pay on the money you borrow to buy your house, and a lower rate increases your purchasing power. Even a small difference in your interest rate can make a big difference in your payments over the life of your loan. That’s why it’s important to watch mortgage rates closely when house hunting.

Lenders set a mortgage rate for each individual based on several factors, including current market rates and individual credit history. You can determine how much your monthly payments would be at different rates using Freddie

Mac’s Fixed-Rate Mortgage Calculator at myhome. freddiemac.com/ resources/calculators/fixed-ratemortgages.

Improving Your Loan Application

Boosting your credit score is one of the best ways to improve your chances of qualifying for a loan and lowering the interest rate you are offered. Some proactive steps you can take to build and maintain your credit include:

amount due, on your credit cards.

• Opening and maintaining credit accounts in your own name.

• Keeping only a few credit cards or credit accounts open.

• Paying down debts.

• Making payments on time.

• Using as little of your credit limit as possible.

• Paying the full amount due, or at least more than the minimum

• Reviewing your credit reports annually.

• Disputing inaccuracies in your credit report.

• Trying to have credit inquiries made strategically within a limited

time period when comparison shopping for mortgages and loans.

Lenders will also look at your debt-to-income (DTI) ratio when making a decision about your loan application, as it is an important marker of your overall financial health. As a guideline, your monthly debt-toincome ratio should be 33% to 36% or less. Representing how much of your monthly income you are using to pay your debt, this handy calculator can help you determine your DTI: myhome.freddiemac.com/ resources/calculators/debt-to-income-ratio-calculator.

To learn more about smart credit management, use Freddie Mac’s CreditSmart online courses found at creditsmart.freddiemac.com.

Shopping Around

In addition to improving your credit and reducing your DTI, you can also potentially get a lower interest rate and avoid certain lender fees by shopping around. Freddie Mac research shows that similar borrowers may receive notably different rates based on the lender, and that homebuyers can potentially save $600 to $1,200 annually by applying for mortgages from multiple lenders.

It’s generally a good idea to get three to five quotes. During this process, you can use this Mortgage Worksheet to identify the best lender and mortgage option for you: myhome.freddiemac.com/ resources/mortgage-comparison. If you’re in the market to buy a home, watch mortgage rates carefully. And when you are ready to buy, don’t take the first mortgage offered. Be sure to shop around and ask about opportunities to secure a lower rate. (StatePoint)

Financing The Care Of Loved Ones With A Disability

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, over one in four Americans are living with a disability and about one-half of these individuals are living with a severe disability.

Whether present at birth or caused by a lifealtering accident or illness, severe disabilities almost always create a significant financial burden due to curtailed earning power and ongoing expenses. That’s where a specialized trust or savings account may help both the individual with special needs, and their families.

To help individuals and families understand their options, Wells Fargo is sharing information about Special Needs Trusts (SNTs) and Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) accounts.

What are special needs trusts? SNTs are irrevocable trusts drafted by an attorney. They’re used to set aside money or property to cover the needs of individuals living with physical, mental or developmental disabilities who may not have the ability or legal capacity to manage their assets and keep detailed records.

How are SNTs funded? The two types of SNTs depend on the source of funding:

• First-party SNTs are funded with money the beneficiary owns, or is awarded as compensation for medical malpractice, personal injury or another type of legal settlement. Typically, they’re created by the benefi-

ciary’s parents, grandparent, legal guardian, or a court, and are for beneficiaries under 65. When the trust terminates, Medicaid is entitled to reimbursement of any funds expended on the beneficiary.

• Third-party SNTs can be established at any time by someone wishing to provide for a minor or adult with special needs, including as part of an estate plan. Unlike first-party trusts, they may be created by anyone, and there is no age restriction on the beneficiary. The terms may be modified, and there is no reimbursement requirement to government programs. While advantageous, their complexity often requires professional assistance.

What are SNTs’ benefits? An SNT can help you or a loved one:

1. Meet current cash flow needs and plan for the future.

2. Preserve eligibility for governmental benefits. People living with disabilities may become ineligible for state and federal benefits if their income and resources

exceed certain thresholds. Under federal law and regulations, an SNT helps ensure a beneficiary remains eligible for these programs.

3. Enhance quality of life by providing financial support for activities and services inadequately covered by public benefits programs. In addition to medical, dental and eye care expenses, appropriate purchases may include an accessible vehicle, medical equipment, computer, gym membership, therapy animals, music lessons, supplemental caregiving services, and even entertainment and travel. The goal is to increase the beneficiary’s ability to enjoy life and participate in their community.

Is an SNT a good fit for my family? Do you have an adult child living with a disability who will need care beyond your lifetime?

Are you receiving a personal injury settlement? Do you need to protect your public benefits eligibility? Are you considering making provisions in your estate plan for a loved one? If so, then an SNT may be a good fit. To learn more about establishing a special needs trust, visit wellsfargo.com/the-privatebank/solutions/specialized/special-needstrust-services/.

What are ABLE accounts? ABLE accounts are a type of tax-advantaged savings accounts for individuals with disabilities and their families opened and maintained by the beneficiary, a parent, guardian, or designated agent.

How do ABLE accounts compare to SNTs? Relative to an SNT, the cost of establishing and maintaining an ABLE account is relatively small. And unlike SNTs, funds can be used for housing and food without an in-kind support and maintenance reduction to Social Security Income. However, ABLE accounts do have a Medicaid payback requirement. Due to their complementary benefits, it’s both permissible and, in some cases, desirable to have both an ABLE account and SNT established. This combination can provide flexibility for the family and the greatest possible benefit to the disabled individual.

Caring for someone living with a disability can be challenging, particularly when it comes to managing assets. Fortunately, financial tools exist to help those living with disabilities, and their families, thrive. (StatePoint)

Supporting The Success of Black Women Entrepreneurs

Black/African American women-owned businesses make significant contributions to the economy and are key to driving small business growth.

In fact, according to the Wells Fargo 2024 Impact of Women-Owned Businesses Report, between 2019 and 2023, Black/African American women-owned businesses saw average revenues increase 32.7%, compared to 12.1% for all women-owned businesses. In spite of this impressive growth, systemic disparities in funding and mentorship opportunities persist. Fortunately, new programs are addressing these gaps.

Funding Opportunities

Financing is central to any business venture, but research shows that women of color receive less than 0.2% of venture-capital funding. With about 61% of Black women entrepreneurs self-funding their businesses, they

exhibit higher levels of debt, facing an unfair disadvantage from the start.

New bank and philanthropic programs are helping Black women identify capital opportunities to build sustainable small businesses. In addition to traditional lending, working with Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) and Minority Depository Institutions (MDIs) can create an ecosystem of support that provides additional avenues to accessing capital. These institutions specifically work with underserved entrepreneurs, including those in low-to-moderate income areas and minority populations.

Supporting these organizations and their mission was at the heart of the creation of initiatives like Wells Fargo’s Open for Business Fund, an industry-leading effort that has donated roughly $420 million to nonprofits serving small businesses; the Small Business Resource Navigator, an online portal con-

necting small business owners to potential financing options and technical assistance through CDFIs; the Capital Pathways Workbook, a free resource that helps entrepreneurs map their capital needs to business goals and objectives; and a Wells Fargo-backed $70 million fund in partnership with Hello Alice to improve access to credit and capital for underserved entrepreneurs.

These programs are helping to dismantle financial barriers and build an environment where Black/African American womenowned businesses can scale, grow and build for the future.

Harnessing Mentorship

Beyond funding, the success and sustainable growth of a small business relies on guidance and community support. That’s why it’s so important to invest in education and mentorship programs specifically designed

for Black/African American women entrepreneurs.

This level of support is at the heart of Milestone Circles, a mentoring program for women entrepreneurs offered by the Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center and funded by the Wells Fargo Foundation.

The majority of participants (86%) have been Black, African American and/or AfroCaribbean, and have learned skills to improve their business alongside fellow entrepreneurs.

As Black/African American women continue taking the lead in business ownership, the banking and business community can take steps to support their momentum, paving the way for their sustained growth and helping make generational wealth an attainable goal for all. (StatePoint)

Representation Of Women And People Of Color In Clinical Trials Is Crucial

Cardiovascular diseases and stroke remain leading causes of death worldwide. As researchers work to find new treatments that have the potential to benefit patients, they say that more diversity is needed among participants in clinical trials to advance understanding of these conditions.

“Clinical trials are a cornerstone of medical research and healthcare innovation. They are essential to advancing medical science and ensuring patient safety, and often lead to the development of effective new treatment options.

However, it is crucial that they include participants from diverse backgrounds, encompassing a wide range of lived experiences and living conditions, and representing diverse races, ethnicities, ages, genders, and sexual orientations, so that all communities can benefit from scientific advancements,” says Roxana Mehran, MD, FACC, FACP, FCCP, FESC, FAHA, MSCAI, Professor of Medicine in Cardiology and Population Health Science and Policy Professor in Cardiovascular Clinical Research and Outcomes Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Research and Clinical Trials Mount Sinai Health System.

According to research published in JAMA

Network Open, women with atrial fibrillation, which is an irregular heart rhythm, face a higher risk of complications, like stroke, compared to men.

The American Heart Association reports that cardiovascular disease prevalence remains highest among non-Hispanic Black females and non-Hispanic Black males. Experts believe such gaps in care are partially due to representation in clinical trials.

Historically, women and people of color have been underrepresented in cardiovascular research, which has in recent decades, relied primarily on white male study participants.

One program in particular is helping to address gaps in heart disease treatment as the first clinical program to enroll nearly 50,000 patients across three trials.

It’s actively recruiting women and members

How To Make Sure Your Lunch Isn’t Harming People

Unfortunately, advocates have found that most tuna found on supermarket shelves comes from fishing methods that cause environmental destruction and put workers at risk.

Oceans are being depleted by overfishing and destructive fishing practices that disrupt marine ecosystems and harm wildlife. What’s more, the fishing industry also relies heavily on forced labor and human trafficking, with reports of 20-hour work days, lack of potable water and nutritious food, violence and even death.

In fact, a report from Pew Charitable Trusts found that 100,000 fishing-related deaths occur annually. Workers have reported being beaten, abused and forced to work on ships for months or years at a time.

Shining a spotlight on the companies profiting the most from tuna fishing, Greenpeace

The Librexia program is a phase 3 clinical trial investigating a potential new treatment for patients with blood clotting diseases, including acute coronary syndrome (i.e. heart attack), atrial fibrillation and prevention of repeated strokes.

The program is designed to find treatment options that can potentially help improve outcomes in a wide range of patients, including underserved populations like women and people of color. To ensure that trial enrollment represents the individuals likely to take the medication, all who meet the criteria are encouraged to explore if the trials are a fit for them.

A clinical trial helps advance research that may benefit family members, the community and future generations. To learn more about cardiovascular and stroke trials near you, visit researchincludesme.com.

“Diverse representation in clinical trials can help us better understand the benefits of a particular medication across all segments of the population,” says Dr. Mehran. (StatePoint)

And The Planet

tailers have taken key steps towards improved transparency – in some cases, publishing their vessel list and vessel supplier lists so that trade unions and worker rights organizations know which companies are in the endbuyer’s supply chain – others have seemed to turn a blind eye to the problem and have made only marginal improvements or have maintained the status quo.

“There should be no place for modern slavery and environmental destruction on U.S. store shelves. Retailers need to take responsibility for the products they are selling and profiting from,” says Charli Fritzner, Greenpeace USA’s Beyond Seafood project lead.

She advises asking about their tuna suppliers, including whether the store can trace their tuna back to the vessel it was caught on, what they know about the people working on the vessels and their rights, and what policies their suppliers have in place to minimize bycatch of other animals, such as sharks or marine birds.

So how can you make sure the food you feed your family isn’t harming people and the planet?

“Individuals can use their voice to let big retailers know that sustainable, ethical seafood is important to them,” says Fritzner. “However, the onus rests on the retailers themselves. They can build trust with their shoppers and communities by knowing where the food stocked on their shelves comes from, including the labor involved and environmental impact in producing it.” (StatePoint)

The United States is one of the world’s largest consumers of seafood, and is the largest market for canned tuna.
According to Fritzner, consumers can make an impact by starting a dialogue with their grocery stores.

5 Important Questions to Ask Your Financial Advisor

Working with a financial advisor can help you reach your short- and long-term financial goals. But it’s all about partnering with the right person, with the right credentials.

There are some important questions you should ask to determine if a potential advisor is the right fit for you, including these five:

What are your qualifications?

Did you know that almost anyone can call themselves a “financial planner” regardless of their skills and experience? Rather than hope for the best, find out if they are a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional. This qualification means they have met rigorous educational, experiential and ethical qualifications.

What are your areas of expertise?

Depending on your goals and needs, you may prefer a planner who focuses on a particular area, such as estate planning or invest-

ing. Or, if you have uncommon circumstances, such as if you are a veteran or you are the caretaker for someone with special needs, you may want to look for someone with experience helping others in similar situations.

While a CFP® professional is qualified to provide comprehensive financial planning to everyone, it doesn’t hurt to learn more about your planner’s areas of expertise.

Will you act in my best interests? In the course of financial planning, conflicts of interest can arise, making it important that you work with someone who will always put your best interests first. Ask your planner if they have a fiduciary duty to you. CFP® professionals commit to CFP Board to act as a fiduciary as part of their certification.

Have you ever been disciplined for unlawful or unethical actions?

For peace of mind, visit cfp.net/ verify-a-cfp-professional. Using

this tool, you can verify whether a given financial planner currently meets CFP Board’s ongoing certification requirements, as well as discover if the individual has ever been disciplined publicly by CFP Board.

What is your pay structure?

From fixed fees and hourly rates to retainers and commissions, financial planning pay structures vary by planner and firm. Be sure you understand how you will be charged in advance of receiving services and choose a payment structure that fits your needs.

For example, if you anticipate needing frequent, ongoing services, paying a retainer may make the most sense. However, if you need one-time advice or short-term counsel, you may prefer to pay a flat fee for the specific service rendered.

Looking for a CFP® professional that’s the perfect match for your needs? Visit LetsMakeAPlan.org.

From retirement planning to debt management, there are many financial services a qualified planner can provide to help you create a more secure future. Before getting started, make sure to ask the right questions. (StatePoint)

Connecting Consumers With Competent, Ethical Financial Planning Advice

Everyone deserves a stable financial future. From analyzing retirement needs to building diversified investment portfolios, a great financial planner helps individuals and families reach their goals.

But with a growing number of financial planners retiring and trillions of dollars expected to pass from baby boomers to their heirs over the coming decades, there is rising consumer demand for professionals dedicated to providing competent, ethical financial planning advice.

Interested in becoming a financial advisor or expanding your skills?

Here’s how earning CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® certification will help you better serve your clients.

It builds trust: The cornerstone of CFP® certification is the commitment of CFP® professionals to act as a fiduciary at all times when offering financial advice. The fiduciary standard also encompasses the duty of loyalty, the duty of care and the duty to follow client instructions.

This commitment means that you agree to place your clients’ interests above yours, and to consider your clients’ goals, risk tolerances and personal circumstances while working with them.

It expands your knowledge and experience: CFP® professionals complete a two-part education requirement that includes a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university as well as coursework on 72 financial planning topics through a CFP Board Registered Program.

Certification also demonstrates that you have passed the rigorous CFP® exam and that you have thousands of hours of practical experience in the field.

It will alter your approach: Today’s consumers value a holistic approach to their financial management. CFP® professionals are trained to offer just that.

It builds confidence: Consumers are more inclined to take your recommendations if they feel they’ve partnered with the right financial advisor. What are they looking for in an advisor? Social Media’s Impact On Our Mental Health And Tips To Use It Safely

(Continued From Page 01) Social media is here to stay and will continue to evolve and become more invasive. If you’re spending a lot of time on social media and feeling sadness, dissatisfaction, frustration, or loneliness, it may be time to re-examine your relationship with your online presence.

Understanding how social media impacts our mental health and overall wellbeing is important for yourself and your loved ones.

Mental health impacts Social media use may increase feelings of anxiety and depression, specifically in teens and young adults.

The addictive nature of social media activates the brain’s reward center by releasing dopamine. This is a “feel-good chemical” linked to pleasurable activities.

When we post something, our friends and family can “like” it, giving us a boost of dopamine.

However, when we don’t get that boost or approval, it can impact our sense of self and adequacy.

Filters: Social media heavily focuses on physical appearance. Many social media platforms – such as Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok –provide users with the option to use filters on an image.

Filters can be great for a laugh, but the ability to easily alter physical appearance and hide imperfections can create false illusions. Constant exposure to altered images can also lead you to feel self-conscious and dislike the way you look.

FOMO (Fear of Missing Out): The use of social media increases feelings of FOMO for many people. Checking in on your friends and family through social media may make you feel that others are having more fun or living better lives than you are.

Social media is often called a “highlight reel,” displaying the

best parts of a user’s life. However, having access to other’s highlight reels can increase our own feelings of dissatisfaction with our own day-to-day.

This can impact self-esteem, trigger anxiety, and make us want to use social media more. FOMO can also compel users to constantly check social media so that they don’t miss out on what’s happening.

Cyberbullying: In 2020, 44% of all internet users in the U.S. said they have experienced online harassment. Cyberbullying is when someone repeatedly and intentionally harasses, mistreats, or makes fun of another person by way of an electronic device. It can severely impact self-esteem and mental health.

Social media platforms can be hotspots for cyberbullying and spreading hurtful rumors, lies, and abuse that can leave lasting emotional scars.

Ways to safely use social media

A great way to improve your relationship with social media and help decrease the negative effects is to decrease your daily screen time. Tips to decrease screen time include:

Set time limits on social media apps within your phone settings Designate specific hours for social media usage

Look through your friends and followers list and unfriend people whose accounts make you feel bad about yourself

Find fulfillment and happiness outside of social media

Prioritize in-person connections and activities to help improve your mental health. This can also lead to decreased screen time.

Find activities that fulfill you outside of your phone. Hiking, picnics with friends, painting, pickleball, reading, or walking your dog can

Ready For Open Enrollment? 4 Tips For Choosing The Right Medicare Plan

With so many Medicare options available, selecting a plan can seem daunting. This year you may be wondering how news of Medicare drug price negotiations, economic uncertainties and other factors may impact your coverage in 2025.

Medicare is the government health insurance program for Americans 65 and older and others who qualify, providing hospital coverage (Part A) and physician visits (Part B) to beneficiaries. Additionally, there are a variety of options that coordinate with original Medicare, such as Medicare Supplement plans and Prescription Drug Plans, or replace original Medicare with Medicare Advantage (MA) plans combined with Prescription Drug Plans.

During this year’s Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which takes place between Oct. 15-Dec. 7, 2024, here’s what Cigna Healthcare, which serves millions of Medicare customers nationwide, wants you to know:

1. Check for plan changes: If your current plan is working for you, you can likely keep it. However, it’s a good idea to review your

plan every AEP, especially if you’ve experienced major life, health or financial changes.

Any changes to your current plan will be outlined in your Medicare plan’s Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) letter, which you can expect to receive in September.

2. Research your coverage: There are a few key things to watch for when shopping for a plan. One of them is whether your favorite providers and specialists will be in-network. You should also review each plan’s formu-

lary – that is, the list of drugs covered under the plan. You’ll want to find a plan that will cover your current medications and any you anticipate your doctor prescribing over the course of the year ahead. Finally, carefully consider your total spend for your prescription drug plan coverage (i.e., premiums plus pharmacy costs) since the maximum out-of-pocket costs for drugs you utilize will be capped at $2,000 in 2025.

3. Look for value: No matter what the economic outlook is, it’s wise to select a plan that provides great value. To that end, you may want to consider an MA plan, which offers quality and affordability. MA plans cover everything original Medicare does, plus

more; most also include dental, vision and hearing benefits, prescription drug coverage, and other extras like over-the-counter drugs, transportation to doctor’s visits and pharmacies, healthy grocery purchases, and fitness services. MA plans are often available with $0 premiums, but you’ll also want to check on what your annual out-of-pocket costs could be based on your health status.

4. Understand your plan: Before enrolling in a particular plan, make sure you understand its ins and outs. Call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) 24/7; TTY users can call 1-877-486-2048. Or, visit the Medicare Plan Finder website at Medicare.gov/plan-compare.

For local assistance, refer to the State Health Insurance Assistance Program at www.shiptacenter.org. You can also contact individual Medicare plans, including Cigna Healthcare at CignaMedicareInformation.com. “AEP is your opportunity to assess your budget and your health needs and find an option that will work for you and your lifestyle in 2025,” says Ryan Kocher, chief growth officer for Cigna Healthcare Medicare. Check Out These Recommendations For The Perfect Fall Getaway

Anyone who loves fall weather should make plans to come to Kentucky.

When October and November roll around in the Bluegrass State, native Kentuckians and visitors alike have their eyes on the tree line, waiting for the first hints of autumn colors. And while the anticipation might seem almost too much to bear, the breathtaking sight of fall foliage in Kentucky is so worth the wait.

If the leaves are turning, no matter where a traveler happens to be in the Commonwealth, they are in for a veritable fireworks show of vibrant fall colors.

There are so many ways to get an amazing view of the foliage, from nature trails for those who like hiking to country roads for those who

enjoy nature from the inside of the car.

The Old Frankfort Pike is a National Scenic Byway that runs through Woodford County in central Ken-

tucky and passes by some of the most charming and beautiful landscapes in the entire country.

3 Tips To Help Kids Stay On Top Of Their Homework

When a new school year begins, most teachers don’t wait long before they begin scheduling tests, and assigning loads of homework and reading assignments. Here are three tips for helping kids stay on top of all their coursework:

1. Focus on organization: One of the most valuable life skills a student can develop while in school is time management. Teach kids how to prioritize assignments with upcoming deadlines and those which are easy to knock off their to-do list. Encourage them to find an organizational tool, such as an academic planner or calendar, that works for them.

Depending on their preferences and learning style, they may prefer to use app-based tools. The important thing is that they always know what is on their to-do list and when it must be completed by. If they are struggling, help them chunk their afternoon into segments so that

they budget enough time for each of their tasks.

2. Equip them with high-quality math tools: Math can be a frustrating subject for many students. To make learning simpler, equip them with tools that are incredibly easy to use. With Natural Textbook Display and an intuitive icon menu, the fx-9750GIII graphing calculator from Casio is a solid, affordable choice for quickly grasping new mathematical concepts.

And because it features nearly 3,000 functions, including graph plotting, probability distribution, vector arithmetic and spreadsheets, students at all levels will find it an invaluable tool, particularly during test-taking season, as its exam mode makes it approved for the SAT, PSAT, ACT and AP tests. The fx-9750GIII is also capable of programming in CASIO Basic and MicroPython, and Python files are easily stored and transferred via

3. Set boundaries: As a parent, it’s essential that you support your child in their academic pursuits, however being too hands-on during homework time could lead them to rely on you to provide them with answers, not guidance.

While this approach may mean they turn their assignments in on time, if they aren’t absorbing the material themselves they could quickly fall behind in the classroom. Set clear boundaries about what your afterschool role will be and stick to it. You can also foster your child’s independence and confidence by helping them differentiate between reliable educational resources and misinformation.

With the right tools and habits, students can keep up with their assignments and make the most of their study time. (StatePoint)

ing a two-mile stretch of road that features centuries-old limestone fences, pastures, barns and a tunnel-like oak tree canopy on either side of the road.

Those lucky enough to drive it during the fall experience a view that’s truly special.

Sixty miles southeast of Lexington is a nature lover’s paradise, the Daniel Boone National Forest.

Driving any one of the state routes that passes through the preserve would satisfy most leaf peepers.

However, for those who insist on getting out of the car and into the woods, hiking the trails in and around Slade will provide all the leaf colors desired, not to mention jaw-dropping views of Red River Gorge, Natural Bridge and Chimney Top Trail.

To find colors and educational opportunities, head to the Bernheim Forest and Arboretum, located just

outside Clermont. Not only does it contain 16,137 acres worth of arboretum, forest and nature preserve, but it has nature and science programming, dozens of folk art installations and playgrounds for children of all ages.

Pushing to the western part of the state, don’t miss out on the Woodlands Trace Scenic Byway.

This road starts at Grand Rivers and takes travelers through the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area and into Tennessee.

Along the way, sightseers will be surrounded by all the autumn splendor Kentucky has to offer.

Beyond fall foliage, Kentucky is the place to be for autumn fun -from haunted mansions and ghost walks to u-pick offerings at farms all across the state. For more information visit, www.kentuckytourism.com.

How Homeowners And Renters Should Respond After A Natural Disaster

Nearly one-third of U.S. homes are at a high risk of damage from a natural disaster, according to CoreLogic.

September is National Preparedness Month. In observance of this month, Freddie Mac is offering homeowners and renters these tips for how to respond when disaster strikes:

Contact Your Insurer and Mortgage Servicer

Whether you rent or own, one of the first people you contact should be your insurance agent or mortgage servicer.

If you’re a renter and your rental unit or property sustains damage, contact your renters insurance company to file a claim. Most policies cover damage from tornadoes, fires, hail and non-flood related water damage. You also should inform your property manager. Sharing pictures of damage may

help them make insurance claims, if necessary. To ensure everyone is on the same page, keep a written record of any communications about plans to address damage.

If you’re a homeowner, call your homeowners insurance agent. In addition to assessing your property’s condition and reimbursing repair and replacement costs, many policies also cover additional living expenses if you are displaced, such as temporary housing, food, pet boarding and other household expenses. It’s also critical to let your mortgage company or servicer know about your current circumstances and to learn about available disaster relief options.

Get Relief

Disasters can stress your finances, but there are ways to get help.

If you’re struggling to make rent following a natural disaster, talk to your property manager about

flexible payments. You should also look at your lease agreement for a rental abatement clause, which may allow you to pause or make partial rent payments if your unit is damaged. As you rebuild, you may also be eligible for programs like federal tax relief and financial assistance for energy bills.

If you’re a homeowner, there are relief options available to help if you’re at risk of missing a mortgage payment due to a natural disaster. One such option is mortgage forbearance, which allows you to reduce or pause your payments for a specified period. Keep in mind that if you choose this option, you should be prepared for when forbearance ends and normal payments resume. You should also refer to the information about disaster assistance and resources provided by entities like FEMA, DisasterAssistance.gov, The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and American Red Cross.

Be Aware of Scams

After a natural disaster, you may be a target for scam artists or predatory lenders seeking out people in distress. Help avoid becoming a victim by being aware of common schemes. These include high-interest loans for repairs, which may offer short-term relief, but end up costing you more in the long term. You should also be wary when prepaying contracts for repairs.

Don’t authorize any payments until all work is completed and you’re satisfied with the final product. Finally, don’t provide personal information to anyone claiming to be a government employee or disaster relief professional without verifying their identity. Remember that government employees will never ask you for financial information, such as a bank account number.

If you believe you’ve been a victim of a scam, report it immediately. First, call your creditors to cancel

your credit cards. You can also request that creditors receive your written consent before changing your mailing address or sending a replacement credit card. Then, contact the credit bureaus to freeze your credit reports so that there’s no activity unless you approve it. Finally, report the scam to consumer protection agencies like the Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice so that the culprit can’t strike again.

Learn more about disaster preparedness with the collection of Freddie Mac educational offerings found at myhome.freddiemac.com/ blog/keyword/disaster-preparedness.

After a natural disaster strikes and you and your loved ones are safe and accounted for, getting on the path to financial recovery is critical. Whether you are a homeowner or renter, there are resources to help you get back on your feet. (StatePoint)

6 Tips To Stay On Top Of Fraudster’s Latest Tricks

Identity theft is reportedly a growing threat as fraudsters evolve to be savvier and more sophisticated. There have been more than 1,300 data breaches already in 2024, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center.

It’s no surprise an Experian survey found that many consumers are wising up to the risk, with over half the U.S. adult population saying they’re highly concerned about identity theft and fraud.

“As fraudsters continue to become more sophisticated, it’s critical that you take matters into your own

hands and protect your personal information,” said Michael Bruemmer, vice president of Experian Global Data Breach Resolution and Consumer Protection at Experian. To help you avoid becoming a victim of fraud, there are a few key tips you should follow:

Create strong passwords: Create strong passwords for every account you have and don’t repeat passwords. If you reuse the same password across multiple accounts and a criminal gets ahold of it, they can potentially wreak havoc on your personal and financial life.

3 Habits Your Dentist Will Thank You For

Regular dental visits are important for a healthy smile, but you can take these steps between checkups to ensure your dentist sees your oral health at its best.

1. Brush up on your dental routine.

“A consistent routine of brushing and cleaning between your teeth is essential,” said American Dental Association (ADA) dentist, Mirissa Price, D.M.D. “My patients often ask me, do I really need to floss if I’m brushing regularly?

The answer is always yes.” The ADA recommends brushing twice daily with a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste to remove cavity-causing plaque and help prevent harmful conditions like gum disease. A worn toothbrush won’t clean as effectively, so replace the brush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed.

Yet, even the best toothbrush can’t fully reach all the spaces where plaque forms. That’s why the ADA also recommends cleaning between your teeth daily using dental floss, dental picks or water flossers. “If you floss thoroughly, it doesn’t matter when you do it,” added Dr. Price. “It might feel strange at first, but your gums will get used to the routine quickly if you make this a daily habit.” Make sure your toothbrush, toothpaste and floss each have the ADA Seal of Acceptance. That’s how you know a dental product is safe and effective.

2. Skip the spoonful of sugar. “I’m

a dentist but I still enjoy a cupcake now and then, so it’s not about cutting out sugar completely,” said

ADA dentist, Erinne Kennedy, D.M.D. “Rather it’s the small changes, like choosing fresh fruit instead of juice or eating a snack that balances protein and carbohydrates, such as whole wheat toast and cottage cheese, that can go a long way to protect your teeth.”

Plaque bacteria use the sugar you consume to produce acids that attack the hard surfaces of teeth, leading to tooth decay.

To help reduce the amount of sugar in your diet, read the nutrition facts on foods and beverages, and choose options that are lowest in sugar. Look for terms ending in “-ose,” which indicate a sugar ingredient. It’s important to distinguish between natural and added sugars. Natural sugars, found in healthy options like fresh fruit and milk, do not carry the same health risks as added sugars often found in processed options like snacks and juices. The United States Department of Agriculture recommends limiting added sugars to less than 10% of your total calories for the day. A nutritious, balanced diet that’s low in sugar is beneficial for your teeth and your whole body.

3. Nix the nicotine. “Despite the influx of nicotine products claiming to be better for you, there is no such thing as ‘good for you’ nicotine or a safe amount of nicotine,” said

A password manager can help you create unique passwords and store them so you don’t need to remember them all on your own.

“All products pose risks to your dental and overall health, whether you’re a habitual or casual user.” When you smoke, your saliva flow is reduced, which changes the natural process inside your mouth that helps clear away cavity-causing bacteria. Meanwhile, the chemicals in tobacco can irritate your gums and the lining of your mouth, which can lead to gum disease and even tooth loss. Smoking can also cause life-threatening cancers of the mouth, throat, tongue or jaw. And smokeless doesn’t mean harmless – smokefree tobacco products have been linked with these same issues. Ecigarettes, also known as “vapes,” come with their own risks. Researchers have found harmful materials in vape cartridges, including chemicals known to cause cancer, heavy metals and sugar for flavorings that may contribute to cavity formation.

Using a high heat setting can turn the smoke more yellow and make it stick to your teeth longer, which could result in tooth discoloration. “Quitting nicotine now will help you lead a healthier life,” added Dr. Kennedy. For more dental health resources from the ADA, visit MouthHealthy.org/dentalcare. “It’s a matter of taking habits that may cost you in the long run off ‘autopilot’ and incorporating healthy habits that then become second nature,” said Dr. Price. correct phone number by looking at physical statements or by logging into your account through a verified portal and call or email the company separately. Use caution when answering calls: Criminals may try to call you and pretend that they are with a company you are associated with in order to have you provide your personal information.

Protect personal documents: Keep all your personal documents out of the hands of fraudsters, especially your social security card, as it can quickly open the door to identity theft. Leave your social security card in a safe place at home–don’t carry it with you.

Additionally, check your mail every day to prevent theft of potentially sensitive data. Shred paperwork with personal information on it before throwing it away. Also, consider having statements delivered electronically so there are fewer physical documents with your information on them.

Watch out for phishing scams:

Phishing uses fake text messages, emails, phone calls or other types of communication that look like it comes from a reputable source. The fraudster’s goal is to make you click on a link or open an attachment and share your personal information. After clicking the fake link and using your login credentials, the scammer can gain access to your account. To protect yourself from these types of scams, never click on a link or open an attachment from someone or a company that you don’t recognize or that looks suspicious. Additionally, if you receive notice that your personal information was involved in a data breach, be cautious about hackers who may imitate the company you received the breach notice from. To verify the legitimacy of the communication, identify the

Never provide information over the phone. Instead, ask for the person’s name and where they are calling from. Hang up and call the company back via the phone number listed on its website to verify if the call was legitimate.

Regularly check your credit reports: Regularly checking your credit reports is a good financial and security habit. Staying updated on what is in your reports will help you spot any suspicious activity, like new accounts you don’t recognize, and help you act quickly to combat further fraud.

Leverage tools to combat fraud: Experian data found that only 30% of people are currently using an identity theft protection product or service. This shows that too many people are missing an opportunity to keep themselves and their identity safe. Experian offers free and paid identity protection products that can be an extra layer of protection. Experian IdentityWorks monitors for activity on your Experian credit report and will alert you if there are any changes. It also monitors for your information on the dark web and provides easy access to lock and unlock your Experian credit file.

You can check your Experian credit report for free and enroll in identity theft protection at www.Experian. com. “Identity theft should be taken seriously by everyone. Being proactive and following key steps can help you stay ahead of fraud before it occurs,” says Bruemmer. (StatePoint)

Oprah, Celebs Rally For Harris In Emotional MI Event

(Continued From Page 01)

Shanette Williams, the mother of Amber Nicole Thurman, a 28-year old Georgia woman who died in August 2022 after a hospital treatment delay related to the state’s restrictive abortion laws, told the audience: “You’re looking at a mother that is broken, the worst pain ever that a mother, that a parent can ever feel.”

Harris responded: “I’m just so sad. And the courage that you all have shown is extraordinary.” Many in the studio audience of about 400 were in tears.

Natalie Griffith, a 15-year-old student from Apalachee High School in Georgia who was shot twice while in math class two weeks ago, sat with her parents in the front row.

“What are we doing?” asked Natalie’s mother, Marilda Griffith. “We have a job, that job is to

protect our children. We have to stop it,” she said, as she and some in the audience, virtual and in-person, cried.

Harris and Democrats have promised to restore national abortion rights impacted by a 2022 Supreme Court decision and pass a

Things To See And Do In Delightfully Spooky Kentucky

Do you love spooky stories and experiences? Kentucky has plenty of paranormal destinations all over the Commonwealth to enjoy this season and beyond.

The Eastern Kentucky Appalachians are just brimming with tales of haunted coal camps. Eerie and abandoned mines, like Blue Heron Mine in McCreary County, offer not only a chance to see what life was like for miners and their families, but also to learn about local folklore.

In addition to year-round tours, every October visitors can attend Blue Heron Ghost Mine and listen to spine-tingling stories about the mines, hills and hollows in the region.

Want to take in some nature with your ghost stories?

Don’t pass up on Lovers Leap at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, where in the 1950s a newlywed bride, still in her wedding dress, fell 80 feet into the Cumberland River and was swept over the falls, never to be seen again.

Over the decades since, many visitors have reported seeing a beautiful woman in a white wedding dress wandering the area around the falls.

Owensboro, situated just down the Ohio River from Louisville, is a city that is home to more than a few eerie happenings. Schedule a “Haunts of Owensboro” walking tour and listen to chilling accounts of inexplicable footsteps in empty rooms, lights and faucets turning on and

off on their own and ghostly figures appearing in doorways and windows.

In Ashland you will find the Paramount Arts Center, a thriving theater and event venue.

However, according to local legend, in 1931 a workman, “Paramount Joe,” died in the theater while it was under construction and his spirit still haunts the premises.

Since his demise, theater employees say

Joe is known to show up in hallways, cause cold drafts, and make items around the playhouse disappear.

ban on assault weapons often used in mass shootings.

Celebrities including comedians Chris Rock and Ben Stiller along with actors Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep and Bryan Cranston joined the event and offered their reasons for backing Harris or peppered her with questions.

“I want to bring my daughters to the White House to meet this Black woman president,” Rock said.

Winfrey noted Harris’ swift transformation after President Joe Biden stepped out of the race in late July, lauding Harris for “stepping into her power.”

“You know we each have those moments in our lives when its time to step up,” Harris said. Before Biden stepped out, Harris’ strength as a presidential candidate was questioned by some Democrats in Washington, including Biden. But she has revived Democrats’ chances, bringing in new fundraising and enthusiasm.

Harris had an unguarded moment, when Winfrey said she was unaware that Harris was a gun owner until her debate with Republican opponent Donald Trump.

“If somebody breaks in my house, they’re getting shot,” Harris said. “Probably should not have said that,” she added.

Harris campaign advisers say nearly 200,000 people signed up to watch the livestream, and its YouTube audience was nearly 100,000 by the end. Instagram, Facebook, Tiktok and Twitch accounts for both Winfrey and Harris also showed the event.

Dozens of grassroots groups including Latinas for Harris, White Dudes for Harris and Win With Black Men that held virtual organizing and fundraising calls in the days after Harris became the Democratic nominee and September 19 marked the first time they all joined in one event.

In a recent Reuters poll, Harris led Trump 47% to 42%.

Harris was ahead in the battleground states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Nevada and North Carolina, while Trump had greater support in Georgia, according to polling averages from aggregator FiveThirtyEight. They are tied in Arizona.

The Babyproofing Checklist For New Parents

Babyproofing – or identifying potential hazards in your home and taking necessary measures to prevent accidents – is an essential step to help ensure the safety and wellbeing of your child.

Start by getting down on your hands and knees to see the world from a small child’s perspective. Look for sharp corners, small objects that can be swallowed and other potential hazards. The goal is to create a safe environment for children to explore and learn.

Ensure the safety of your little one with this guide to effectively babyproof some of the most-used rooms in your home.

Essential Tips for the Nursery

The nursery is where your baby will spend a significant amount of

time, so ensuring it’s a safe space is crucial. Anchor heavy furniture, such as dressers and bookshelves, to the wall to prevent tipping.

Ensure the crib meets current safety standards and keep it free from pillows, blankets and stuffed

animals to reduce the risk of suffocation. Use cordless window coverings, ensure electrical outlets are covered with safety plugs and keep cords from baby monitors and other devices out of reach.

Securing the Kitchen and Bathroom

The kitchen and bathroom are full of potential hazards for curious babies. In the kitchen, install cabinet locks to keep little hands out of drawers and cabinets that contain dangerous items such as knives, cleaning supplies and medications. Install stove knob covers and keep pot handles turned inward to prevent burns.

In the bathroom, always keep the toilet lid closed and consider a toilet lock. Never leave your child unattended in the bathtub, install anti-scald devices on faucets and set your water heater to 120 F or lower to prevent burns.

Living Room Safety Measures

Another area where your child will spend a lot of time, the living room often features plenty of

small objects that could be choking hazards, such as remote controls, coins and batteries. In addition to keeping small items out of reach, cover corners and sharp edges of furniture and secure TVs and other large electronics to prevent tipping. Cover electrical outlets with safety plugs and use cord shorteners or hide cords behind furniture.

Once you’ve completed your initial babyproofing, regularly reassess your home as your child grows and becomes more mobile. New hazards often arise as kids learn to crawl, walk and climb.

Guard Against COPD At Every Stage Of Life

Take a deep breath. Now ask yourself: When was the last time you thought about breathing?

For people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), breathing is often front of mind because it can be difficult, and it gets worse over time.

There is no cure yet for COPD, but experts from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) recommend these strategies to protect your lung health at every age.

Younger Adults: Prevention is Key COPD is less common in younger adults, but it’s never too early to protect your lungs. The most important way to prevent COPD is to not smoke.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 75% of people with COPD have a history of smoking. Smoking isn’t the only risk factor for COPD.

Middle-Aged Adults: Know the Symptoms and Seek Help

Most people are 40 or older when COPD symptoms start. Symptoms include shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and fatigue.

These are not just signs of getting older, and they’re not the same as seasonal allergies.

Older adults are at greater risk of COPD. If you’ve been diagnosed, follow your treatment plan and take medicines as prescribed.

Lifestyle changes can help people with COPD breathe better. Talk to your health care provider about pulmonary rehabilitation, a personalized treatment program that teaches COPD management strategies.

Ask about an eating plan that will meet your nutritional needs and what types of physical activity you can safely do. Stay up to date with vaccinations against flu, pneumonia and COVID-19.

If you breathe in lung irritants at work, talk to your employer about how to limit exposure.

People with a genetic condition called AAT (Alpha-1 Antitrypsin) deficiency, sometimes known as Alpha-1, may have COPD-like

Exposure to secondhand smoke, air pollution, chemical fumes or dust from the environment or workplace can also increase your risk.

symptoms as early as age 20.

If you have symptoms or a family history of COPD, talk to your health care provider about being tested for AAT deficiency.

“It’s a simple, quick and highly accurate test that could improve the lives of some people with COPD,” said Dr. Mihaela Stefan of the NHLBI.

If you have symptoms, ask your health care provider if you should be tested for COPD. Discuss your smoking habits, family history of COPD and long-term exposure to lung irritants.

Your health care provider may recommend lung function tests or imaging to diagnose COPD.

We have many fun activities, and hope to see you there!

One of our seniors explains why this program means a lot to them:

“When I was younger, it was the time when our whole extended family would come to our house.

We would string marigolds, make mithai, and get gifted new clothes from my Amma.

It would be a joyous occasion with lots of laughter and togetherness.

After my mom passed, it was not the same and as we moved abroad we did not have family to celebrate with.

Holidays are meant to come together and not feel isolated. Celebrating Diwali at the Domain brings back the same old memories of how we celebrated when we

were younger - together.”

The training, which began on September 9 at the Foreign Training Node, Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan, will continue until September 22.

The Indian army released a video showcasing the joint training exercises, emphasizing the participation of troops from both nations.

On September 16, soldiers from both armies took a break to visit the historic Junagarh Fort in Bikaner.

to celebrate Diwali, get your teen involved by volunteering with hours being verified, elders able to participate in a dance performance, children’s activities, full day of entertainment, visiting 40+ small businesses, food and more!

Around 600 US soldiers, who arrived in India for the exercise, were transported in groups by bus for a guided tour of the fort.

The American troops were particularly impressed by the Badal Ma-

hal, Ranivas, and artillery displays.

The Indian army arranged guides to provide historical context for the visitors.

The exercise involves rehearsing tactical drills, including joint responses to terrorist actions, joint planning, and field training exercises that simulate real-world counter-terrorism missions.

The 14-day exercise includes the participation of approximately 600 troops from a battalion of the RAJPUT Regiment and other arms and services on the Indian side.

What To Know Before Hiring An HVAC Contractor

For many homeowners, the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system is among the home’s most important, and most costly, features. This system ensures the home remains at a comfortable temperature, and it also plays a significant role in the home’s energy usage.

If you’re in the market for a new HVAC solution, you probably know there’s no shortage of installers. Before you hire a contractor, there are some important factors you should consider, according to the experts at Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US (METUS), a leader in heating and cooling innovation.

Product Options

A qualified technician will have the knowledge and flexibility to install a wide range of products and solutions. As the country moves toward electrification, your contractor should be well-versed in conventional HVAC systems and more sustainable options such as energy-efficient, mini-split ductless and ducted heat pumps.

It’s also important to know about a prospective contractor’s experience with the equipment, including installation, main-

tenance, and repair. Accreditation, licensing, and training will give you a good idea, but you should also explore the contractor’s reputation and reliability through references and reviews.

Price

When exploring your options, get a written quote that details the proposed equipment and labor costs. Ask about incentives available at the time of service, including discounts, rebates, or other pricing specials. If you are installing an energy-efficient heat pump, you might also be eligible for incen-

tives through the Inflation Reduction Act, such as tax credits and state rebate programs.

Financing

Replacing or repairing your HVAC system can be an unexpected expense. More HVAC contractors are beginning to offer financing options to help customers with upfront costs. Ask about financing options – preferably low-interest options – early on in your conversations with contractors. If any are offered, ensure the contractor is working with a trusted, reputable lending provider. If you are investing in an energy-efficient system, your heating and cooling savings may even allow you to recoup your loan over time.

Warranty

Many HVAC manufacturers offer equipment

What Older Adults Need To Know

Even though cooler days may seem far off, now is the best time to plan ahead for a healthy winter. One common respiratory illness, respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms, but it can be severe and even deadly for older people.

“As we grow older, our immune systems do not work as well and we are more likely to have chronic conditions, which means we are at increased risk of getting very sick from common viruses as we age,” said Alison Barkoff, who leads the Administration for Community Living within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. “Getting vaccinated is the best protection against fall respiratory viruses like RSV. It can help keep symptoms mild and help keep people out of the hospital.”

Here’s what older Americans need to know about RSV and vaccines this fall, according to the Risk Less. Do More. Public Education Campaign.

Prevention is key. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that

everyone 75 years and older get an RSV vaccine. Also, people between 60-74 should get vaccinated if they have conditions such as heart or lung disease, diabetes, obesity or a weakened immune system. The vaccine cuts the risk of hospitalization from RSV by at least half.

People living in nursing homes, assisted living or other long-term care facilities are at even higher risk. There are many people living together in these facilities who have medical conditions that make them more likely to get very sick. While vaccines may not always stop infection, they can prevent severe illness. So, vaccination is very important for residents of long-term care facilities.

warranties that can help offset future repair costs, but it’s important to understand what’s covered. For example, Diamond Contractors, specially trained in installing Mitsubishi Electric equipment, allow for a 12-year warranty on parts and a 12-year warranty on compressors after equipment has been registered.

Equipment Issues

A qualified technician can help you understand the various options and explain terms you don’t know. You should feel comfortable asking questions and requesting the information in writing.

Learn what else you need to know before making a big investment in a new HVAC system at mitsubishicomfort.com.

Asking the Right Questions Matters You’ve done research, budgeted for upfront costs, and compared units, but can’t make sense of the different HVAC systems. Hiring the right contractor can help alleviate these concerns.

Asking the right questions is especially important if you have specific energy goals in mind. Consider these questions:

1.Are you certified in HVAC installation, repair and maintenance?

2. Do you have insurance?

3. Do you have references I can speak with?

RSV vaccines are available. Three RSV vaccines have been approved for older adults by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. You only need a single dose that you can get at any time of the year, but getting the vaccine in the early fall offers the best protection for the late fall and winter, when RSV usually peaks. Getting the vaccine early gives your immune system enough time to build up protection.

RSV vaccines are the best protection. The RSV vaccines have gone through extensive testing. Last year, more than 20 million older adults were vaccinated safely. Mild side effects, such as pain, redness or swelling at the injection site sometimes happen, but they usually go away on their own in a few days. Serious allergic reactions from RSV vaccines are rare.

Prevention is the best option. Respiratory virus vaccines, including RSV vaccines, can help protect older adults from serious illness. Talk to your doctor and visit cdc.gov/RSV to learn more.

4. What are the indoor unit options for my home’s design and square footage? How many units do I need? How many of these systems has your company installed in the last few years?

5. Does my home’s design support ductwork, or are ductless systems the best option for me? What are the pros and cons of each?

6. What’s the temperature range this system can manage?

7. How does this system handle partial loads? (“Load” is the amount of heating or cooling needed to bring a space to a comfortable temperature.)

Nepal Himalayas

Nepal Himalayas, east-central section and highest part of the Himalayan mountain ranges in southcentral Asia, extending some 500 miles (800 km) from the Kali River east to the Tista River.

The range occupies most of Nepal and extends into the Tibet Autonomous Region of China and Sikkim state in India.

The Nepal-Tibet border roughly follows the line of the highest part of the range (the Great Himalayas), featuring several of the world’s highest peaks: Everest (29,035 feet [8,850 metres]), Kanchenjunga (28,169 feet [8,586 metres]), Makalu (27,766 feet [8,463 metres]), Dhaulagiri I (26,795 feet [8,167 metres]), Manaslu I (26,781 feet [8,163 metres]), and Annapurna I (26,545 feet [8,091 metres]).

These permanently snow-covered mountains overlook huge glaciers. Rivers flow southward through deep ravines that cut through even the highest ridges; thus, the watershed between the Brahmaputra (north) and the Ganges (south) lies in Tibet well north of the greatest peaks.

Annapurna

The Great Himalayas form a climatic barrier between the monsoonal (wet-dry) Indian lowland plains and the Tibetan desert high plateau.

The barren, uninhabitable highlands also are a major impediment to human travel; the turbulent rivers cannot be navigated, and their steep rocky banks make foot traffic difficult.

The few passes are at elevations between 16,000 and 19,000 feet (5,000 and 6,000 metres). In the lower, forested Lesser Himalayas to the south, river valleys permit human habitation, grazing, and limited agriculture at an elevation of about 5,000 feet (1,500 metres).

and western Nepal. It rises as the Kali River in far northern Uttarakhand state in the Great Himalayas on the eastern slopes of the Nanda Devi massif.

The river then flows generally south-southwest, where it constitutes the border between Uttarakhand state and Nepal.

Descending from the mountains, it enters the Indo-Gangetic Plain at Barmdeo Mandi (Nepal), widening there above the Sarda Barrage. Below that point it is known as the Sarda River.

The Sarda then continues southeastward into India through northern Uttar Pradesh state before joining the Ghaghara River southwest of Bahraich, after a course of about 300 miles (480 km).

Its major tributaries are the Dhauliganga, Goriganga, and Sarju. The Sarda Barrage (dam), near Banbasa (Uttarakhand), is the source of the Sarda Canal (completed 1930), one of the longest irrigation canals in northern India.

Happiness Now

It was a beautiful day, and both

men were smiling to themselves. Seeing his friend, Tenali inquired as to what was causing him to smile. His friend replied saying he was thinking about the day when

he will be truly happy.

“When is that?” Tenali Rama asked. His friend went on to explain that he will truly feel happy when he has a house by the sea, with a comfortable car, a big bank balance, a pretty wife and four sons who would get educated and earn a lot of money.

Interrupting this monologue, Tenali asked, “After all this, what will you do?” To which his friend replies “After all this, I can put my feet up, enjoy the sea breeze and the sun on my face.”

Hearing this, Tenali gives out a mighty laugh and says “But aren’t you doing just that now? Minus all the hard work!”

What Pregnant People Need To Know

Fall brings cooler days and more time indoors. This makes it easier for viruses like influenza (flu), COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) to spread. These illnesses can be especially risky for pregnant people and newborns.

Getting vaccinated for flu, COVID-19 and RSV during your pregnancy lets you pass protection to your baby.

Your immunity helps keep them from getting very sick from one of these viruses in their first few months of life.

Vaccines for flu and COVID-19 also protect expectant parents from serious symptoms. Pregnant people are more likely to need medical care or hospitalization for flu and COVID-19 than people their age who are not pregnant, according to the Risk Less. Do More. Public Education Campaign.

“It makes sense that people are very careful about the health choices they make during pregnancy,” said Manisha Patel, MD, MS, MBA, Chief Medical Officer of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.

“The good news is that flu and COVID-19 vaccines are the best way to protect you and your baby against serious disease.

RSV vaccines cut by more than half the risk of your baby being hospitalized for severe RSV disease, the leading cause of hospitalization for infants in the United States.”

Here are some key facts about pregnancy and vaccination:

Getting vaccinated protects you during and after pregnancy. Common respiratory viruses can be dangerous for people who are pregnant or have recently been pregnant.

This is because respiratory illnesses during pregnancy are more likely to be severe. Studies show that the flu and COVID-19 vaccines are the best protection for pregnant people.

They lower the risk of serious illness, hospitalization and death.

Like medications, vaccines can cause side effects, but side effects from flu and COVID-19 vaccines are almost always mild and brief. The benefits of these vaccines outweigh the risks for most people.

The Centers for Disease Control

and Prevention also recommends an RSV vaccine during pregnancy. Vaccination during pregnancy cuts the risk of a newborn being hospitalized with RSV by half.

Getting vaccinated protects your unborn or nursing child.

Flu, COVID-19 and RSV viruses are dangerous for both unborn and

newborn children.

About 20,000 children under age 5 in the U.S. are hospitalized with flu each year. Infants under 6 months are at the highest risk of serious complications.

Infants are also at higher risk for RSV. In fact, it’s the top reason babies in the U.S. are hospitalized.

When a pregnant person gets vaccinated for flu, COVID-19 or RSV, they share their immunity with their child.

Recent studies also show that some breastfeeding parents maintain infection-fighting antibodies in their breastmilk after vaccination. This immunity can also help protect their baby.

Timing for vaccinations is important.

Getting vaccinated for flu, COV-

ID-19 and RSV during pregnancy builds antibodies that can help protect the baby. Get the yearly COVID-19 and flu vaccines this fall season.

For RSV, it is recommended that pregnant people get vaccinated between 32-36 weeks of pregnancy during the RSV season, which is from September-January in most parts of the United States.

If you have questions or concerns, talk to your doctor. Knowing the facts about vaccination and pregnancy can offer confidence and comfort.

The Truth About Women And Heart Disease

Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women in the United States. Although it is largely preventable, each year more than 300,000 women, or 1 in every 5, die from heart disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

About 1 in 16 women ages 20 and older have coronary heart disease, the most common type of heart disease, and 75% of women 2039 years old have one or more risk factors.

These include diabetes, hypertension (also known as high blood pressure), high cholesterol, currently smoking or obesity. For African American and Hispanic/Latina women, the risk of heart disease is even greater.

Among women 20 years and older, more than half of African American women and one-third of Hispanic/Latina women have hypertension, which when left uncontrolled greatly impacts the risk for heart disease or stroke.

In an effort to educate women about heart disease at younger ages, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s (NHLBI) The Heart Truth® program launched an initiative called Yes, YOU!

The initiative is focused on empowering younger women to know the facts about heart disease, understand their personal risk factors and equip themselves with resources to take action to protect their hearts.

The key takeaway is it’s never too early, or too late, to adopt hearthealthy behaviors. One of the first steps heart health experts recom-

mend is learning more about any family history of heart disease and about risk factors that you can change with healthy lifestyle choices.

“Awareness is the first step toward reducing risk,” said Gina S. Wei, M.D., M.P.H., associate director of NHLBI’s Division of Cardiovascular Sciences and NHLBI’s senior scientific advisor on women’s health. “Women need to be empowered to know the facts so they can take action to protect their hearts.”

Consider these recommended steps from the Yes, YOU! initiative for women looking to improve their heart health:

• Eat a heart-healthy diet rich in vegetables, fruits and whole greens and low in saturated fat, sodium and sugar.

• Increase physical activity by aiming for at least 150 minutes each week

• Maintain a healthy weight

• Control blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar

• Get 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night

• Talk to your health care provider about resources to help quit smoking

• Manage stress by practicing selfcare and having positive social support

In addition to a public service announcement, the initiative’s webpage features fact sheets in English and Spanish, social media resources to promote heart health and video testimonials from women who share their heart health experiences.

4 Ways To Do Your Part For Spotless Public Spaces

From a day spent in the office to evenings out and everywhere in between, there’s one thing virtually everyone leaves behind now and again: a mess.

Whether it’s scratch paper from a morning meeting or food scraps and used napkins at your favorite restaurant, you’re likely to leave some trash in your wake on any given day.

While waste is a normal part of everyday life, there are ways you can do your part to keep your community clean beyond simply picking up after yourself, including keeping in mind the hardworking custodians who make big things possible by working tirelessly to maintain clean and safe spaces every day.

To show appreciation for those custodians, Rubbermaid Commercial Products (RCP) is hosting celebrations across the U.S. for the

third year in a row to engage with and personally thank those who keep the world working by going above and beyond keeping public spaces spotless.

These events aim to elevate, recognize and thank those who go above and beyond for cleanliness and safety. Consider these ways you can add to the cause and do

your part for clean offices, schools, neighborhoods and beyond.

Pick Up After Yourself

Striving for a cleaner community doesn’t happen overnight; it begins with small steps and habits you can incorporate every day.

One of the easiest ways you can

California Pistachios – From Garnish To Snack In Indian Kitchens

SACRAMENTO, CA (ANI) – As pistachios gain recognition as a global superfood, California’s pistachio industry is setting its sights on India’s rapidly expanding market. Sumit Saran, the India representative of American Pistachio Growers – a group representing over 865 growers primarily based in California – explains the shift: “India doesn’t grow pistachios, so they’ve traditionally imported from Iran or Persia. Now, California pistachios, known for their high quality and safety standards, are becoming the preferred choice.”

stand out because of their exceptional quality.

In India, pistachios have long been used as garnishes for dishes like biryani or sweets, but snacking on them is a new trend. People are now snacking on pistachios the way they do almonds or cashews, and that’s where the growth is coming from. California pistachios

Part of the appeal is convenience— pistachios are easy to carry, don’t need refrigeration, and pack a protein punch. They’re the only nut with all nine essential amino acids, usually found in animal products, so they’re perfect for vegetarians or those on plant-based diets. A handful of pistachios gives you as much protein as an egg.

The APG, run by pistachio growers themselves, is focused on boost-

lend a hand to maintenance professionals is by simply cleaning up after yourself, from recycling used paper at the office to properly disposing of that popcorn bucket after catching a movie.

Encourage Cleanliness at Work

An unkempt work environment can be a detriment to both productivity and safety. Voice any concerns you may have about your workspace and recommend tools that can help encourage cleanliness.

Consider the variety of innovative products RCP offers, including Utility and Decorative Trash Cans, Mops, Broom Carts, Safety Signs, Heavy-Duty Trucks and more that can help get the job done.

Keep Cleanup Supplies on Hand

ing global awareness of American pistachios. To strengthen their foothold in India, APG has roped in cricket star Jasprit Bumrah as their brand ambassador for the 2024-25 season. A significant number of pistachio farmers in California and Arizona are of Indian origin. One second-generation Indian farmer manages 2,000 acres of pistachios.

With the 2028 Summer Olympics set to take place in Los Angeles— and cricket making a return to the games for the first time in over a century—California’s connection with India could only grow stronger, blending both agricultural and cultural ties, officials say. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

Organize Community Cleaning Events

If you’re ready to go above and beyond, consider organizing a community cleanup. Set a date and time, gather supplies like trash bags and gloves then spread the news to family, friends and neighbors, and share why it’s important to keep spaces clean and safe. Start with a local park or your own neighborhood to avoid overwhelming your volunteers, but as your cleanup crew grows, you can tackle larger areas.

Find more solutions to strive for cleaner communities at rubbermaidcommercial.com/behind-thescenes-of-clean. (Family Features)

Go beyond your own messes and fight back against litter in public spaces by keeping cleanup supplies in a backpack while hiking, stowed away while biking or in your trunk while driving through town. A few small trash bags and disposable gloves or a trash picker are all you need to help put a stop to littered parks and neighborhoods.

Padma Lakshmi Planning Cooking Show On CBS

LOS ANGELES, CA – Padma

Lakshmi, the former host and judge of Top Chef, is teaming up with former NBCUniversal content chief Susan Rovner for a new cooking competition series on CBS, according to Deadline. The show is still in the early development stages, it said.

Lakshmi will serve as both executive producer and host of the upcoming series. This new project follows her departure from Top Chef, which she announced in June 2023 after 19 successful seasons. During her time on the show, Lakshmi not only hosted but also tasted “every single thing.”

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, she had explained that her decision to leave was partly driven by a desire to focus on her documentary-style food show, Taste the Nation.

CBS currently lacks a food-focused competition in its lineup. Given the crowded market for cooking shows, the series will need a unique angle to stand out.

However, Deadline notes that Lakshmi’s involvement is a major draw, as her expertise and onscreen presence were instrumental in making Top Chef a household name. (Courtesy: https://indiawest. com/)

India’s Wants To Better China But Finds It Has To Work With China

NEW DELHI, (REUTERS) – India’s push to become a factory titan has hit a snag: to become a credible alternative to China for global firms, it first needs to warm up to its long-time rival.

Ties between the world’s two most populous countries have been strained since a deadly Himalayan border clash in 2020, slowing the exchange of capital, technology and talent, despite exploding demand for electric vehicles, semiconductors and artificial intelligence.

The Modi government’s heightened vetting of all Chinese investment over this period effectively turned away billions of dollars from the likes of BYD, Great Wall Motor and created new layers of red tape for Indian firms with Chinese stakeholders.

But now, New Delhi is looking to loosen some of these restrictions as businesses struggle to scale up manufacturing, even with a host of government subsidies designed to boost local production.

“There is a realization that you cannot be part of any major supply chains, especially in high technology products and certain areas like solar cells, EVs, where it is not possible for you to do anything without being part of Chinese supply chains,” said Sushant Singh, lecturer at Yale University, who has also been a researcher for public policy think tanks in India.

Even businesses that have supported barriers on Chinese imports acknowledge the need for key inputs from up north.

Naveen Jindal, head of one of the country’s largest steel firms Jindal Steel & Power and a federal lawmaker, has backed tariffs on Chinese steel but also sees the need for a pragmatic approach to trade.

“A lot of steel companies import equipment and technology from

China,” Jindal said. “China is the world’s largest producer of steel and in certain areas they are very good, but not in every area.”

Now, after four years of restrictions on Chinese investments and visas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is looking to pivot closer to the Asian rival and breathe new life into his ambitions to “Make in India”.

“The government is considering easing investment rules that were introduced in 2020 for countries that India shares land border with as we need more investments,” an official privy to government discussions told Reuters.

New Delhi is now planning to add a clause that investments from firms with up to 10% Chinese shareholding will no longer require government approval, a move that could help global companies that have supply chain partnerships with Chinese firms easily invest in India.

To address security concerns, the government is also planning to set up a post-investment monitoring framework driven by crime and fraud investigation agencies and the banking regulator.

The move would encourage greater Chinese investment, which ana-

maker moving 14% of its global iPhone assembly to India in the fiscal year 2023/24.

In the same year, India’s mobile exports increased 42% to a record $15.6 billion.

However, even with such a shift there are doubts India’s factories were big enough to match the investment or achieve the productivity gains of their Chinese counterparts.

Indian Chief Economic Adviser V. Anantha Nageswaran said it was inevitable India would need to plug itself into China’s supply chains.

“Whether we do so by relying solely on imports or partially through Chinese investments is a choice that India has to make,” Nageswaran said in July.

lysts say is critical to India joining global supply chains in high-technology sectors such as solar cells, EVs and battery manufacturing.

The proposed easing is still being pushed by Modi’s office with various sticking points between government ministries being ironed out, a second official, with direct knowledge of the matter said.

Following industry lobbying, India has already eased visa issuance for Chinese nationals and is expediting visa approvals to Chinese engineers for sectors that get federal subsidies to manufacture locally.

It has likely approved nearly 2,000 short-term visas to Chinese professionals, who accounted for most applications between November last year and July this year, another government official said.

“In the visa process, there is rationality. On the ground it has not translated yet, but the mindset shift has happened,” Pankaj Mohindroo, head of the Indian Cellular and Electronics Association said.

After the 2020 clash with China, to lure Apple, the Indian government gave quick approvals to joint ventures between the US giant’s Chinese suppliers and Indian firms.

The move has led to the phone

A sharp decline in foreign investment into India has also prompted the rethink on trade barriers. Away from politics, Indian demand for Chinese goods remains robust, even with the targeted curbs.

Goods imports have surged 56% since the 2020 border clash while India’s trade deficit with China has nearly doubled to $85 billion. China continues to be India’s biggest source of goods and was the largest supplier of industrial products last year.

“We will be better off with some Chinese investment and technology flowing into our country without compromising national security concerns,” Mohindroo said. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

Halloween-inspired snacks.

Go for a Ghoulish Snack Bar

Encourage a little devious creativity this Halloween with a popcorn bar (charboo-terie board) that features everyone’s favorites.

Start with enough freshly popped popcorn to feed all your little zombies and vampires then add seasonal favorites like candy corn, chocolate candies, individually wrapped treats, dried fruit, nuts and beyond.

To pop popcorn on a stovetop, cover the bottom of a 3- to 4-quart pan with a thin layer of vegetable

oil (don’t use butter, it will burn).

Place 3 kernels of popcorn in the pan, cover with a loose lid that allows steam to escape and heat. When the kernels pop, pour in enough popcorn to cover the bottom of the pan, one kernel deep, then cover the pan and shake to evenly spread the oil.

When the popping begins to slow to a few seconds apart, remove the pan from the stovetop. The heated oil will still pop the remaining kernels.

In microwave-safe bowl, combine white chocolate, olive oil and pumpkin pie spice; microwave on medium 2-3 minutes, or until melted and smooth, stirring after each minute.

Pour melted white chocolate mixture over popcorn; add toffee bits and toss to combine. Transfer to prepared baking sheet, spreading to edges of pan; sprinkle sea salt over top. Let cool; refrigerate 1-2 hours, or until set. Break into chunks for serving.

Tip: Homemade pumpkin pie spice can be made by combining 3 parts ground cinnamon with 1 part ground nutmeg, 1 part allspice and 1 part ginger. (Family Features)

5 Things To Consider Before Buying A Heat Pump

If you’re like many homeowners who are considering ways to achieve greater energy efficiency, cut costs long term and reduce use of fossil fuels, replacing your gas furnace with an electric-powered heat pump may be part of the solution.

Like an air conditioner, a heat pump is installed outside the home and can cool it, but heat pumps are also capable of providing heat.

In fact, many homeowners can’t tell the difference between a traditional heat pump and an air conditioner because they look alike and have similar hook-ups.

However, in cooler months, a heat pump pulls heat from the cold outdoor air and transfers it indoors, and similarly, in warmer months, it pulls heat out of indoor air to cool your home.

When considering purchasing a heat pump for your home, it’s important to evaluate several factors to ensure you make an informed decision. Here are five key things to consider from the experts at Carrier, a leader in high-technology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions:

1. Energy Efficiency

Heat pumps are rated by their Heating Seasonal Factor, which is a measure of a heat pump’s overall energy efficiency during the heating season; their Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER2); and their Energy Efficiency Ratio.

September 2024 Sudoku Answer

These ratings are like miles per gallon for a car: the higher the rating, the more energy-efficient the system is, which can lead to lower utility bills.

For example, standard SEER2 ratings today are around 14.3 (and some older units are as low as 8), but units with a SEER2 rating above 16 have lower energy costs, which translates into higher energy savings.

2. Climate Suitability

Heat pumps are most efficient in areas with moderate temperate ranges. If you live in an area with extreme cold, you may need a heat pump designed for low temperatures such as Carrier’s Infinity Heat Pump with Greenspeed Intelligence, which operates at temperatures as low as minus 15 degrees.

Or you can combine a heat pump with a gas furnace in colder climates for energy-efficient heating on all but the coldest days.

3. Cost and Incentives

While heat pumps can be more expensive initially, their efficiency can lead to long-term savings. Research available incentives, rebates and tax credits that can help offset some of the upfront cost.

Many governments, manufacturers and utility companies also offer financial incentives for installing energy-efficient systems.

For example, the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 provides several tax credits, up to $2,000 for qualified heat pumps, and is available through 2032.

4. Size and Capacity

It’s essential to ensure the heat

pump is the appropriate size for your home. An undersized unit may run virtually nonstop to try and maintain a comfortable temperature inside your home while an oversized unit will cycle on and off frequently, reducing efficiency and lifespan.

A professional Carrier dealer can help you determine the correct size based on your home’s heating and cooling needs.

5. Installation and Maintenance

Professional and proper installation are crucial for optimal performance. Choose a reputable, experienced HVAC contractor to install your heat pump.

The average lifespan of a wellmaintained heat pump is 15 years. However, with varying conditions and homeowner habits, it could live well beyond that.

Understand the heat pump’s maintenance needs, including regular filter changes, coil cleaning and annual inspections to ensure longevity and efficiency.

Without regular cleaning and maintenance, dirty coils can cause your system to work harder to keep up with demand, decreasing efficiency and increasing stress on the fans, motors and system components.

Dirty, clogged air filters can restrict airflow, resulting in reduced comfort, higher utility bills and, in extreme cases, a total shutdown of the system.

By carefully considering these factors, you can choose a heat pump that best meets your home’s needs and provides efficient, reliable heating and cooling. Learn more at Carrier.com. (Family Features)

US-India To Boost Semiconductor

Supply Under Biden’s CHIPS Act

WASHINGTON DC (ANI) – The State Department will collaborate with the India Semiconductor Mission and India’s Ministry of Electronics and IT under the International Technology Security and Innovation (ITSI) Fund, created by the CHIPS Act of 2022 that was enacted by President Joe Biden.

This partnership aims to enhance the global semiconductor ecosystem by fostering a more resilient and secure supply chain.

Kurt Campbell, Deputy Secretary of State, emphasized the strategic significance of expanding U.S.-India relations, highlighting that the partnership is a key effort of the Biden-Harris administration.

He noted that the alignment between the

two nations has never been stronger and that their joint initiatives, such as INDUSX, are crucial to the U.S.India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology.

Campbell described INDUS-X as a cornerstone of ICET, focusing on areas such as semiconductors, advanced telecommunications, artificial intelligence, quantum biotechnology, and clean energy.

He stressed that deepening defense innovation cooperation is vital for maintaining a critical advantage for both countries’ armed forces.

Under INDUS-X, the U.S. and India have announced $1.2 million in seed funding for ten companies, with plans for additional challenges and the formation of an INDUS-X testing consortium.

The partnership aims to assess India’s semiconductor ecosystem, including regulatory frameworks and infrastructure needs, to drive future joint initiatives.

This collaboration reflects the significant investment by the U.S. to strengthen its strategic partnership with India and enhance both nations’ technological capabilities.

The ITSI Fund, established by the CHIPS Act, supports these efforts by providing $500 million over five years to promote secure and trusted technologies and supply chains.

Earth’s Ozone Layer On Road To Recovery

SINGAPORE, (REUTERS) – The world’s ozone layer is on “the road to long-term recovery” despite a destructive volcanic eruption in the South Pacific, the World Meteorological Organization said on September 17, after efforts to phase out ozone-depleting chemicals.

On current trends, the ozone layer is on track to recover to 1980 levels by around 2066 over the Antarctic, 2045 over the Arctic and 2040 for the rest of the world, the United Nations agency said.

Though the volcanic eruption near Tonga in early 2022 led to a short period of accelerated depletion of ozone above Antarctica last year, driven by higher levels of atmospheric water vapor, overall losses were limited, it said in its annual ozone bulletin, opens new tab.

India Tops China For First Time In Key MSCI Equities Index

(Continued From Page 01)

India’s weight in the MSCI investible large-, mid- and small-cap index has risen to 2.35%, greater than China’s weight of 2.24%, Morgan Stanley said in a note on September 18.

“India will continue to gain share due to market outperformance, new issuances and liquidity improvements,” analysts led by Jonathan Garner of Morgan Stanley said.

India’s nominal gross domestic product growth rate is running in the low teens, more than thrice the economic growth in China, generating a “profound divergence in earnings growth environment”, according to the brokerage. China’s weight on the index had peaked in early 2021.

Earlier this month, Morgan Stanley forecast that India will overtake China in the MSCI Emerging Markets index as India’s stock market rally was “only past the halfway

mark”.

India’s rising weightage in the MSCI indexes will bring additional inflows, analysts said.

India is among the best-performing markets this year globally, with its benchmark indexes NSE Nifty 50 and S&P BSE Sensex up 17% and 15%, respectively.

China’s Shanghai Composite index is down about 9% this year amid concerns over the economy and the property sector. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

The ozone layer protects the earth from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, which is linked to skin cancer and other health risks.

The Montreal Protocol, which came into effect in 1989, agreed to phase out chlorofluorocarbons and other ozone-depleting substances, and its success “stands out as a powerful symbol of hope” at a time when multilateral cooperation has come under strain.

CFCs have been largely replaced by hydrofluorocarbons, which do not cause ozone depletion but are a powerful climate-warming greenhouse gas.

Countries are now implementing the 2016 Kigali amendment to Montreal, which will phase down HFC production, and could avoid around 0.5 degrees Celsius of warming by 2100.

China remains the world’s biggest HFC producer, with current capacity the equivalent of nearly 2 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide. About a quarter is exported. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

Low-Impact Iyengar Yoga Can Help With Urinary Incontinence

PALO ALTO, CA (ANI) – Older women suffering from urine incontinence can benefit from frequent, low-impact exercise, including yoga, stretching, and strengthening, according to a study.

The research, led by scientists at Stanford Medicine and the University of California, San Francisco, is part of a bigger attempt to develop low-risk, low-cost treatments for one of the most frequent health concerns that women encounter as they age.

After 12 weeks of a low-impact yoga exercise, study participants experienced approximately 65 per cent fewer incontinence episodes. Women in a control group who did stretching and strengthening activities saw similar results over the same period. According to the researchers, the benefits are comparable to the effects of incontinence medications.

“Our study was testing the kind of yoga that just about anyone can do, with modifications for different physical abilities,” said the study’s senior author, Leslee Subak, MD, chair of obstetrics and gynecology at Stanford Medicine. “What I love about it is that it’s safe, inexpensive, doesn’t require a doctor and is accessible wherever you live.” Because the trial was conducted partly during the COVID-19 pandemic, many participants received their yoga or exercise instruction via online meetings, exercising in their own homes, she noted.

The study’s lead author is Alison Huang, MD, professor of medicine, urology, and epidemiology and biostatistics at UCSF.

Urinary incontinence, which affects more than half of middle-aged women and up to 80 per cent of 80-year-olds, can lead to a variety of other problems, from social isolation to bone fractures caused by falls. But there is help.

“Part of the problem is that incontinence is stigmatized; we don’t talk about it,” said Subak, the Katharine Dexter McCormick and Stanley McCormick Memorial Professor III. “Or we hear folklore about this being normal when you get older. In fact, it’s very common but it’s not inevitable, and we have very effective ways of treating it.”

Incontinence deserves good treatment because of the many ways it interferes with people’s lives.

“It takes away independence,” Subak said. “My patients will say, ‘I can’t stay with my kids or grandkids because I’m afraid I’ll wet

the bed, and I can’t talk about it; it’s too embarrassing.’”

Patients may avoid activities that could boost their well-being, such as exercising and seeing friends. They are more likely to be admitted to a nursing home and to suffer certain serious medical problems such as hip fractures.

“Incontinence and overactive bladder are among the biggest risk factors for falls and fractures among older women,” Subak said. “You’re rushing to the bathroom at night — with the lights off — tripping and falling and breaking a hip.”

Some factors that contribute to risk for incontinence can’t be changed, such as aging or having had children. But others are modifiable.

“A lot of my research has focused on weight loss and physical activity, which in fact are effective treatments,” Subak said. She became interested in studying yoga as a treatment after some of her patients told her it helped them.

The study compared two 12-week exercise programs: 121 participants were randomly assigned to yoga, and 119 to a physical conditioning control group. The participants were women with urinary incontinence that

The study began with in-person classes, and then transitioned to a videoconference format when the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns began.

Participants recorded when they leaked urine and classified whether each episode was urgency incontinence, when an overactive bladder causes a person to feel the need to urinate more often than usual, or stress incontinence, in response to pressure in the abdomen, such as from coughing or sneezing. They also answered standard questionnaires about their bladder function.

At the beginning of the study, the participants had an average of 3.4 episodes of urinary incontinence per day, including 1.9 urgencytype episodes and 1.4 stress-type episodes.

By the end of the 12-week programs, participants in the yoga group were experiencing 2.3 fewer episodes of incontinence per day, on average. Those in the physical conditioning group were experiencing 1.9 fewer episodes per day.

caused symptoms at least once a day. They were 45 to 90 years old, with a mean age of 62.

In the yoga program, participants learned 16 hatha yoga poses intended to strengthen the pelvic floor, via two 90-minute sessions per week. The pelvic floor consists of the muscles that form the base of the pelvis and hold its organs — including the bladder and urethra — in place. Participants were also asked to practice yoga for at least one hour per week outside of class and to maintain a practice log.

Participants in the control group spent an equal amount of time in exercise classes, but their classes focused on nonspecific stretching and strengthening exercises that did not engage the pelvic floor. They were also asked to practice for an additional hour per week and keep a practice log.

The two treatments are about equally effective, with both approaches reducing episodes of incontinence by around 60%, and the benefits from both treatments are meaningful, Subak said. Patients who would like to try these approaches can search for low-impact Iyengar yoga or low-impact exercise classes in their communities or online, she said, adding that instructors should be able to adapt the activity to participants’ physical limitations.

She noted that other nonsurgical treatments for incontinence, including medications, typically result in a 30% to 70% improvement in symptoms.

If a patient asked whether yoga could help with incontinence, “I would say that I think it’s a great idea to try it if you’re interested,” Subak said. “It’s very low risk, and there’s potential for benefit not only for incontinence but also for your general well-being.” (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

Naseeruddin Shah On Film Promotions: No Use

MUMBAI – Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah, whose show ‘IC 814:

The Kandahar Hijack’ has just premiered on Netflix, believes that film promotions have lost their relevance and no longer generate audience interest.

In a recent roundtable discussion with his co-stars Vijay Varma, Arvind Swami, Pankaj Kapur, and Manoj Pahwa, as well as the show’s director Anubhav Sinha, Naseeruddin Shah shared his views on the topic. When Sinha asked about his aversion to promotions, Shah responded, “I feel it makes no difference.”

The actor elaborated that audiences naturally gravitate towards what they want to watch, sensing it in-

stinctively.

He reminisced about how, during his youth, people eagerly anticipated films, sometimes waiting over two years for a release. “I remember when I was in school or college, Dilip Kumar’s films would release after long intervals, sometimes two years apart. But we always planned to watch them, and nothing could dissuade us,” Shah recalled. He further emphasized that the audience’s preferences are independent of promotional efforts. “The audience decides what they want to see, and us saying ‘We have worked really hard on this film’ makes no difference to them. Hard work is part of our job as actors; there’s no need to praise ourselves for it,” he concluded. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)
