Once again, Trakehners Australia Inc., organised a National Australian Tour 2017, with our esteemed visiting international Trakehner Verband Classifier, Mr Matthais Werner, for March 2017 – and what an amazing success it has been! Mr Mathias Werner is the International Classifier for “Foal Registration and the Studbook Commissioner” for the Trakehner Verband e.V., the Holsteiner Verband e.V., the Hanovarian Verband e.V., and the Pferdestammbuch Rheinland e.V. He is also an international accredited FN-Judge. In conjunction with the Australian Sports Pony Registry Inc., and the Holsteiner Horse Association Australia Ltd., Trakehners Australia were able to co-ordinate a Tour of Australian bred horses which are of ‘World Class’ ability and performance. Mr Werner was highly impressed with the standard of horses now being bred in Australia and the focus direction of those breeders to continue to breed horses for the international market and international level competitions, as well as the Australian breeders are raising the bar within Australia for the standard of horse being bred for Australian competition. Trakehners Australia Inc., takes great pride in being able to organise a National Australian Tour, which is both highly professional and highly organised and which meets the standards required at international breed tours across Europe, UK and the USA. Trakehners Australia Inc., is a member society of the Trakehner Verband of Germany, and part of the Hessan Group Trakehner Verband and as such, we are required to follow their governance and guidelines in the breeding of pure Trakehners in Australia. Trakehners Australia also govern the Studbook for Trakehner Partbreds/Derivatives in Australia, and continues to promote the wonderful attributes of the Trakehner breed – those being beauty, elegance, trainability and performance. I have been privileged to be the President of Trakehners Australia since 2012. During this time, the very hard working TA Committee Members have always strived to be excellent and professional in all our decisions for competitions which the TA co-ordinate during each year, and also in our sponsorship for those Trakehner horse breeders who we are privileged to have, and to support and represent. Australia has some wonderful Trakehner horses and over time we are seeing more and more beautiful Trakehners being bred from the very best bloodlines in Europe. Trakehners Australia Inc., takes great pride in our philosophy of being ‘cohesive and co-operative’ with other breed societies in Australia and in being able to work harmoniously together to bring about the very best breed tours for Australia with visiting onternational classifiers with an outstanding international resume. TA consider it imperative for Australia to have the insight and advice from those persons who are judging the very best international horses in Europe, UK and USA. This only leads to the strengthening of the Australian breeding programs and the standard of horses being bred here. I would like to thank Mr Matthias Werner for his continued support for Trakehners Australia Inc., and for Australia, and to the Australian Sports Pony Registry and the Holsteiner Horse Association Australia for all their hard work in making this 2017 Tour such an amazingly wonderful experience and a huge success. I would sincerely like to thank all of the horse owners who entered the Tour, showcasing their beautiful horses and for their hospitality to Mr Werner and the members of the TA Committee who assisted him throughout the Tour. Australia’s first Shagya-Araber Sport Horse breeding program The Shagya-Araber is a medium sized (15.1-16.1hh) sport horse combining the elegance and stamina of the Arabian with traditional European cavalry lines. The goal is an elegant, yet substantial Arabian bred riding and carriage horse, with a kind temperament. The ShagyaAraber breed was developed by the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the late 1700s, and is a foundation horse for many warmblood breeds, particularly the Trakehner. It is found in the pedigrees of many well-known International eventing horses.

Correct feeding for all the horses is one of the highest priorities, to maintain horses in peak health and condition throughout different stages of growth. Alexander Park is situated in the beautiful Avon Valley in Western Australia and is dedicated to breeding Trakehners pure and part and the occasional sports pony. The stud was established in 1977 with the intention of breeding a small number of horses each year for dressage, eventing and showjumping. Owned by Sharon Haddock, we were one of the pioneers in Australia of sales of foals in utero and today sell most of my young stock by this very successful method. Sharon was also the original creator/president of Trakehners Australia and is a well respected voice in Australian Trakehner and breeding circles. Some of the competition horses produced by AP are: AP Meistersohn - gelding, eventer, has competed successfully up to 1* Lucinda Green commented that he could make the 4* with no problems at all. AP Phoenix - 14yo gelding, now a schoolmaster for Dee Roe’s students but was a successful eventer and Novice Dressage Horse of the Year. AP Gabrielle - Purebred mare that has competed successfully in eventing, showjumping and showjumping AP Showgirl - Fabulous dressage horse that has really made a great start to her dressage career and will go FEI. AP Aristocrat - Has start a fantastic showjumping career and was successfully at Yalambi’s recent show. AP Applause (dec.) - Purebred mare competed at medium level dressage and a very successful eventer. AP Iserlohn - just started in her eventing career, has the most amazing jump and should go a long way. AP Monteverdi - Purebred Gelding Champion colt on the TV tour at 6 weeks, has competed in dressage and trekking and now to embark on an eventing career. March saw the ASPR take part for the first time in a National Assessment Tour in association with Trakehners Australia and the Holsteiner Horses of Australia Association. Unfortunately last year we were unable to offer any form of international assessment when the ACE Group severed its ties with us at late notice. This saw us no longer in a position to offer an experienced international assessor to our members. Gerd Kust has had an incredible impact on the breeding direction of our ponies and I personally missed his insightful advice on breeding a true to type pony. However, when one door slams shut another opens in the form of TA (Trakehners Australia) and the amazing Matthias Werner. Matthias needs very little introduction in dressage circles. He is the international classifier for “Foal Registration and the Studbook Commissioner” for the Trakehner Verband e.V., the Holsteiner Verband e.V., the Hanoverian Verband e.V., and the Pferdestammbuch Rheinland e.V. He is also an international accredited FN-Judge. I believe our breeding direction is now in very safe hands. The ASPR assessed ponies across 5 states with all foals and ponies presented of a very high standard. Our breeding commitment to ponies is very buoyant and the excitement generated by breeders and owners very infectious. This year we offered various National High Score Awards in the form of rugs generously sponsored by our long term sponsors, Pryde’s EasiFeed. They were bestowed on some very worthy participants on the Tour, including those who presented yearlings after missing the boat last year as foals. They were very popular! The HHAA Ltd was fortunate to be invited by Trakehners Australia Inc and the Australian Sports Pony Registry to to be included in their 2017 Australian Assessment Tour – an HHAA Ltd fully sanctioned classification tour. The Tour was conducted by the very well credentialed and experienced German Classifier, Matthias Alexander Werner. Holsteiner horses were presented in WA, SA and Victoria. As our first tour in several years, numbers were modest but all horses were of a very high standard and all were accepted into the HHAA Premium Studbook. A great achievement, so congratulations to all who presented. The Tour has generated a lot of interest and we are already receiving enquires about participating in the 2018 Tour. Well done to Shelley Fellows from WA for gaining the highest two year old with the lovely female Deepdale Park Gisela. Both of Shelley’s horses scored well and were branded with the HHAA registered brand. Congratulations also to Stefanie Barnes of SA who received the highest scoring 2 year old with her well presented grey gelding, Grande Design who will enter the studbook as a ‘derivative’. As the base of the HHAA Ltd, Victoria had the largest number of horses presenting for classification with six stallios, three mares, one yearling filly and one colt foal. Isle of Wight Farm presented four stallions (Isle of Ascot, Isle of Aintree, Somerset D’Isle and Isle of Lamborghini) in hand and jumping free with Ascot and D’Isle also presenting under saddle. All stallions received excellent scores and were branded with the Association’s brand. Isle of Lamborghini received the equal top free jumping score with Wendy Keddle’s Carrado MVNZ and received the highest scoring Holsteiner of the Tour in hand. Four of the other Holsteiner females of varying ages were presented at Isle of Wight Farm by and on behalf of their owners. These were:

Moving south to the Yarra Valley, the Tour visited the property of well known showjumping competitors Brooke and Angela Dobbin to inspect the Holsteiner stallions imported from Europe and owned by Wendy Keddle of New Zealand - Carrado MVNZ and Leopoldo MVNZ. Both stallions are very well bred and lovely types placing 1 st and 2nd in the tour. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Tanya Hosford and Margie Kuiper and all those who made the Tour such a great event. We look forward to participating in a growing Tour in 2018.

NATIONAL TOUR ASSESSOR - Matthias Werner Matthias commenced his career as a breeding judge in 2002 and since 2006 he has been an official judge in the stud book commission of Trakehner Verband, classifying beside Lars Gehrman, the Verband Breeding Director. He has also judged with many senior classifiers from various German breeding associations including inspection and registration of foals and mares from the Hannoverian, Rheinland and Holsteiner Verbands. He is one of the first official registered judges with an FN Certificate. Matthias and his family have been involved with breeding for three generations, breeding Connemaras, Sport Ponies, Sport Horses and in particular Trakehners. He is still breeding his own horses and in 2014 received his Master Craftsman Diploma for Breeding. Since 2015 he is the appointed Instructor at the Hynex Sporthorses Jumping Barn, where he trains and teaches young students. Matthias built up the mare performance test in his state since 2006 and received the honour of an invitation to judge the breed classes at the 2015 UK Horse of the Year Show.
