The 2015 FEI Pony European Championships were dominated by Great Britain winning all Team Gold across the three disciplines as well as Individual Dressage Gold. The only Gold they didn’t win was the Individual Jumping and Eventing.

SL Lucci and Phoebe Peters from Great Britain dominated the Championships with Gold in all 3 tests Credit - Qorum Photos

The 30th running of the Championships began with the Team Dressage test with 57 riders competing over two days and 13 teams vying for the coveted Gold Medal for this competition. Winning Team Gold for the first time ever was the British team of SL Lucci (x Lukas) and Phoebe Peters, Valido’s Sunshine (x Valido) and Rebecca Bell, Rembrandt DDH (x Renoir) and Clare Hole with DHI Langar (x Lukas) and Isobel Berrington as the drop score. With a total of 222.872 for Great Britain, Peter’s top score of 80.077 relegated the German team to the Silver Medal with a total of 222.231. Although the German team did not look as strong on paper as in previous years,

Cyrill WE, a former Bundeschampion, with rider Nadine Krause scored Silver in all 3 of the Championship tests

the 9 yo palomino stallion Cyrill WE (x FS Champion de Luxe) posted a score of 75.769% to place 2nd in the test which gave them enough points to take the Silver ahead of Denmark on 221.359. The very consistent Danish team placed 3rd, 4th, 5th and 8th in the team test taking them well ahead of the Dutch who despite looking in serious medal contention with previous results, had to settle for 4th. The 12 yo gelding Farbenfroh (x Farewell I) achieved the highest score for Denmark with 74.128%. SL Lucci and Peters were the 2013 European Pony Champions with Germany’s Deinhard B and Semmieke Rothenberger taking back the title last year. In her last year as a pony rider, Rothenberger decided to transfer to the junior ranks this year. SL Lucci and Deinhard B met at only one event since the 2014 Europeans, at the Addington CDIP where SL Lucci won both the Team and Individual tests against Deinhard B who in turn won the Freestyle tests. It would have indeed been a battle of two brilliant ponies and riders for the European Championship this year but it was not to be.

Following the Team test was the Individual competition with SL Lucci and Phoebe Peters again dominating the rest of the field. Winning Individual Gold, the combination scored 81.390% giving them the World Record score in this test as well as already holding the record in the Team and Freestyle tests from the 2013 Championships. Taking their second Silver Medal was the German pony team member Cyrill WE and Nadine Krause with 76.732%, ahead of fellow team member FS Charly Brown (x FS Champion de Luxe) on 73.756% with Bronze. FS Charly Brown is only 7 years old and the Europeans were his second competition at international level, having competed at Hagen in June with rider Helen Erbe. His highest score there was 72.875% in the freestyle. Although Young Pony competitions are not for all ponies, several members of

the German team have progressed from the Bundeschampionate with FS Charly Brown winning Silver in the 6 yo Dressage Pony competition in 2014 and Cyrill WE previously winning Gold, Silver and Bronze in his age groups. The 2014 European Champion Deinhard B was also a Bundeschampion winner. The final day of the Championships featured the Pony Freestyle test with the Top 18 ponies progressing from the Individual competition. A maximum of 3 combinations from any one team may compete. SL Lucci and Peters broke their own World Record to win their third Gold Medal posting a score of 85.825%. Breaking 80% for the first time in his short career, Germany’s Cyrill WE scored 80.550% for Silver and Denmark’s Farbenfroh also scored a personal best to win Bronze with 77.825%.

This competition consists of two rounds with jumps a maximum height of 1.30m and maximum spread of 1.40m, apart from the triple which can have a maximum spread up to 1.60m and the water jump which can be up to 3.30m. Ireland won the Silver on 235.92 points with France in Bronze on 243.07 points. Tixylix and Jodie Hall jump for Individual Silver for Great Britain

Winning the Individual Gold for the Showjumping Championships was the Hannover/Connemara cross pony Shamrock du Gite ridden by Justine Maerte for France. Silver in the Individual went to the British 18 yo mare Tixylix and Jodie Hall Mcateer giving the mare her seventh European Championship medal. She jumped 7 rounds for the entire Championships with only one round down. Bronze was won by Belgium’s Okehurst Little Bow Wow, a paint pony who at the 2013 Championships was in the German showjumping team and finished 8th overall.

Winning the Individual Gold for Eventing for Germany was the 12 yo Weser Ems gelding Askaban B and Calvin Boeckmann. Silver was won by the French warmblood cross pony Podeenagh Aluinn and Bronze to the Connemara gelding from Ireland, Millridge Buachaill Bui.

German team member Nadine Krause is also in her last year as a pony rider but has decided not to sell her ponies Cyrill WE and Danilo. Instead, both medal winning ponies have been allocated to other German pony riders for the forthcoming season.

The 8 year old palomino stallion Steendieks Prince of Glory (x Triple Trees Prince Perfect) who was sold to Denmark following the FEI Pony Europeans last year will more than likely be knocking on the door to be on the Danish team for the 2016 Championships.

Following their Gold Medal win at the FEI European Championships, Great Britain continued their successful campaign with Dressage Pony Team member Rebecca Bell and Valido’s Sunshine winning the Team Test and placing 2nd in the Individual and Freestyle tests at the Austrian CDI in mid September. Germany’s number one FEI Dressage Pony, Deinhard B has passed away following colic surgery.

In 2014 he was a member of the Italian FEI Pony Team with rider Valentina Remold where they finished fifth overall in the Team competition and individually gained 7th place in the Kur and 8th in the Team Test.

The 16 yo Rheinland bred palomino stallion began his career with Stephanie Jansen in 2002 where he placed 4th as a 3 yo at the Bundeschampionate and 4th again as a 4 yo in 2003. Two short years later at the minimum age allowed of 6 yo, Deinhard B was crowned the 2005 European FEI Pony Champion with Anna von Negri, winning all 3 tests in Saumur, France.

Ridden by 14 yo Sofie Hansen, Prince of Glory scored personal bests for the combination in all 3 tests to finish 5th overall at the recent Danish Pony Dressage Championships with the top 3 spots taken by ponies placing at the 2015 Europeans and just behind the 2014 Danish Pony Championship winner, Der Harlekin B. The 2015 winner was Farbenfroh who placed 4th overall in the 2015 Europeans.

In late 2005, Sonke Rothenberger took over the ride on Deinhard B and in 2008 won all 3 tests to be the 2008 FEI European Pony Champion. 2009 was Sonke’s last year as a pony rider which he finished off with Deinhard B as the Reserve FEI European Pony Champion. In 2010, German Pony Team member Lena Charlotte Walterscheidt started competing on Deinhard B and at the FEI European Championships at Bishop Burton (UK) finished 3rd overall. 2012 saw Sonke’s young sister, Semmieke starting her pony dressage career on Deinhard B with many wins both in Germany and at international level to follow.

Click image to watch the late Deinhard B in action with Semmieke Rothenberger

Their first European FEI Pony Championships in 2013 resulted in Reserve Champion followed by Champion at the Millstreet (Ireland) event in 2014. The 2015 competition year was Semmieke’s last as a Pony rider and after not competing at the 2015 FEI European Pony Championships Deinhard B and Semmieke Rothenberger won all three Gold Medals at the German Youth Riders Championships in her last year as a pony rider.

The order for beautiful spring weather was put in for our annual Pryde’s EasiFeed Open EA Dressage competition and was duly delivered with riders and their mounts enjoying a lovely day at Werribee on Saturday 17th October. Pictured is Rivington Windrow and Rebecca Kent We sincerely thank all of our judges for officiating at our event and in particular our wonderful patron, Jill Cobcroft who flew down from Sydney. Without pencillors the event would not go ahead and while it was touch and go a couple of times to get someone in the box, we very much appreciate our helpers for giving up their time to make the trip to Werribee and to those that answered the last minute call. Very good entries were received in both the Open and Pony classes with this event being one of the last qualifiers for the Dressage Festival. All of the Pony Championship winners received quality stable rugs sponsored by Pryde’s EasiFeed with winners of classes also going home with bags of feed and summer rugs also sponsored by Pryde’s. Long time supporter of our ASPR events Ann Smiley was successful winning the Pony Preliminary Championship on a countback with her 4 year old Riding Pony gelding Lynlea Rap Dance (x Silkwood Puss N Boots x Cennen Pioneer (Imp)) and half brother to Ann’s successful Lynlea Flashdance. Amie Hourigan and her Stockhorse cross pony Bootlicious were awarded the Reserve Championship. The Open Preliminary Champion three horses ended up on equal scores after the two tests and it was the 5 yo Jaybee Aldo (x Alabaster x Don Schufro) owned and ridden by Jason Dins who was awarded the Championship on his total scores. The Reserve title went to Elizabeth Sheather riding her 4 yo Warmblood gelding Coldstream Universe (x Uswin (Imp) x Don Frederico).

With horses and ponies competing together in each level with the same judges, the ponies scored extremely well compared to the horses. With a total percentage of 132.375 Lynlea Rapdance finished just behind Jaybee Aldo on 132.564, a top effort. Winning both of his Novice tests to take out the Pony Novice Championship was the 6 yo Riding Pony gelding Beauparc Swayze (x Manorvale County Royal x Staveley Mastermind), owned and ridden by Deborah Hamid. It was lovely to see Deb taking a break from judging to enjoy riding her pony. Beauparc Swayze finished 3rd overall in strong fields when comparing the horses and ponies. Reserve Champion Preliminary Pony was awarded to the Welsh B gelding Rivington Windrow (x Panteg Gambler’s Luck x Mirinda Royal Mint), owned and ridden by Rebecca Kent. Placing first and second in the Open Novice tests gave Flowervale Florencierre (x Florencio) ridden and owned by Luciano D’Elia the Novice Championship. Reserve Champion was awarded to Bloomfield Furst Glory (x Furst Love) ridden and owned by Libby Sheather.

The Pony Elementary Championship was awarded to Melanie Clark and her Riding Pony gelding, Imperial Debonair (x Langtree Valentine x Weston Chilo (Imp)). Reserve Champion was won by young rider Natasha Moody and her coloured Arabian Derivative mare, Raven Lodge Aura (x Raven Lodge Born Brave x Allanooka Omar). The Open Elementary was won by Joanna Muir riding her own Thoroughbred gelding Napoleon Jack (x Desert Prince) with the Reserve awarded to the warmblood mare Stanmore Park Ruby (x River Dance (Imp)) ridden by Jason Dins and owned by Suzanne Adams. The higher levels were a bit short on pony entries however Louise Maguire and her Welsh B gelding Mithril Vagabond (x Owendale Brandman x Fairway Skyline) was the Medium Pony Championship winner and is showing a great deal of promise to go much higher through the levels.

Benchmark Dolly ridden by Jane Salter

The Open Medium Championship as won by the imported Friesian stallion Braggo S, ridden by Jason James and owned by Katrina Routson. The Reserve Championship was awarded to Robyn Todd riding her Rotspon gelding Jaybee Royalty. The Open Advanced Championship was won by Russell Beaton riding his own Solomons Song (unknown breeding) with Amber Evans and Strzlecki Crusade (x Falkland) winning the Reserve Championship. The Newcomer Preliminary Pony class was won by the New Forest stallion Arnwood Destiny (x Forestway Rhythm) ridden by Camilla Hansen and owned by Ruth Kennedy.

All ponies registered with the ASPR since its inception in 2004, have been entered into the online stud book. If the pony was assessed on one of the annual tours, scores are also listed together with the grading obtained. In order for a pedigree to be listed in the ASPR online stud book, proof of breeding must be provided. This is usually done through a registration with another breed group by providing a copy of the relevant registration certificate. If a pony is not registered with any other group or society, then a service certificate accompanying the application of the pony to be registered may be accepted. The online stud book has many features that can assist breeders in their research of pedigrees of ponies bred both in Australia and from other countries. A major feature is the listing of other registrations for our registered ponies. If a pedigree is not yet fully extended within the ASPR stud book, breeders can very easily look up other online stud books for further information. The online stud book has numerous search functions available including searching for ponies by breed. For example, breeders can obtain a list of all German Riding Pony cross ponies or all Welsh ponies listed within the stud book. Owners who have registered ponies with the ASPR can look up their membership status and if their stud prefix is registered. The Equine ID Document provides detailed pedigree information and assessment scores and can be used by the owner to record major performance results as well as vital veterinary information—all in the one document. At the 2015 World Young Horse Championships in Verden held earlier in August, the International Dressage Cup for Ponies was debuted and proved very popular with visitors from Germany and abroad. The series for 5 and 6 yo ponies was modelled on the World Championships with the quality of Young Ponies presented being particularly high. Winning both the qualifier and the final for 5 year olds was the Weser Ems bred Carleo Go (x Constantin x Weltmeyer). The runner-up in the final was D-Day AT (x Dance Star x Notre Beau) after placing 4th in the qualifier. Also winning the both the qualifier and final for the 6 year olds was the Schleswig-Holstein gelding Timberlake SH (x Timberland x Top Karetino). Runner-up was Del Estero AT (x Dance Star AT x Marsvogel xx) after qualifying 4th highest.

The final of the KNHS Divosa Young Dressage Pony Championships was held on August 22 At Kootwijk in the Netherlands following 9 selection trials held around the country.

56 four year olds, 67 five year olds and 28 six year olds took part in the qualifying events with the Top 20 from each age group progressing to the final where after one more qualifying round, the Top 5 were judged again with guest riders. Winning the four year old Championship was the Dutch Riding Pony stallion Castenrayseweg’s Dreamboy (x Molenhorn’s Lucky Boy x Leunsveld Lord).

Shorter reins – higher scores Haven’t we all noticed that in elite dressage, the horse’s head position behind the vertical seems to be more and more common, while at the same time the scores seem to go higher? A new veterinary study confirms that this is actually the case. Read more at the Lusitano Portal . . . . . .

The five year old Young Dressage Pony Champion was Turfhorst Pippin’s Pride (x Wengelo’s Ricardo). The stallion was the four year old winner in 2014. The six year old Championship was won by the Dutch Riding Pony mare, Den Ostriks Mara (x Leunsveld Lord x Kranseveld Kadans), also a winner as a five year old in 2014.

The highlight of competition for many breeders, owners and trainers in Germany is the annual Federal Young Horse/Pony Championships (Bundeschampionate) held in Warendorf each year. This is the premier event for 3 to 6 year olds in dressage, eventing, jumping and driving. Qualifying events are held around the country in a four month period from April to July where ponies must achieve a minimum score of 7.5 in order to qualify. 3 and 4 yo ponies may be ridden by adults whereas the 5 and 6 yo’s must be ridden by children, thus giving judges a good idea of the ponies FEI Pony potential. There were 22 starters in the 3 yo Riding Pony mare/ gelding first qualifying round with the Weser Ems palomino mare Damenwahl K WE (x Dimension AT x FS Champion de Luxe) scoring 8.7 to be the top qualifier.

Bronze Medal winner in 2014. Silver was awarded to the Holstein gelding Tackmann’s Hochgenuss (x Highway x Llanarth Fire Flyer) with a total of 59.0 with Bronze to Daddy’s Chanel on 58.5.

The top 8 ponies go into the final held two days later to be scored again for their paces, conformation and training and also to be ridden by two guest riders. Damenwahl K WE kept her top spot winning Gold with scores of 9.5 for her trot and 9’s for her training and conformation. She was awarded a total of 17 by the guest riders giving her a total of 60.5.

The striking cremello stallion Golden West (x Hesselteich’s Golden Dream x FS Golden Moonlight) who won Gold as a 3 yo was one of 18 starters in the 4 yo Riding Pony stallion class and qualified second highest on 8.6. The top qualifier was the Westfalen stallion Drei D AT (x Dance Star AT x Dreamdancer) on 8.8.

The Silver Medal was won by the Rheinland mare Daily Kiss 2 (x Dornier B x Valido) with a total score of 59.5 with the Bronze awarded to Dubique A (x FS Daddy Cool x Padparadscha) on 58.0. The 3 yo Riding Pony stallion first qualifying round had 20 starters with the Palomino Rheinland stallion Movie Star 26 (x FS Mr Right x Lancer II) scoring 9.2, including 10’s for his trot and canter. Qualifying second highest on 9.1 was Mister Universum 2, also by FS Mr Right scoring 9.1. Seven stallions went to the final where Movie Star again scored perfect 10’s for his trot and canter and a total of 19 from the guest riders to win the Gold Medal on a total of 65.5. Silver went to Mister Universum who also scored 19.0 from the guest riders giving him a total of 64.5. The Bronze Medal was awarded to Diamond Touch 2 (x Golden Dime x FS Golden Moonlight) with 18.5 from the guest riders. For the 4 yo Riding Pony Mare/Gelding class, 35 ponies qualified with 28 ponies presenting for the first qualifying round. Highest qualifier was the Westfalen mare Daddy’s Chanel (x FS Daddy Cool x Chantre B) on 8.3. Qualifying equal second was Tropensonne (x Totilas x Top Non Stop II) and Tackmann’s Charmeur (x Chios Bunter x Immenmor Nova-Space), both on 8.1. Tropensonne was the 3 yo Gold Medallist last year. Ten ponies presented in the final where the Holstein Pony mare Tackmann’s Baiser improved on her qualifying performance to win the Gold Medal with 59.5. She was awarded 17.5 by the guest riders. The mare was the 3 yo

Six ponies progressed to the final where Golden West made it back to back Gold medals on a score of 61.5 after being awarded a great score of 19.5 by the guest riders. Drei D AT scored 0.5 higher than Golden West following presentation to the judges but with a lesser rider score of 19.0 he was awarded the Silver Medal. Bronze was awarded to Ceylon E WE (x Cyriac WE x Viktoria’s Colano) on 60.0. The 5 and 6 year old Dressage Pony classes follow a different format to the younger ponies with top qualifiers in the first round automatically going to the final. The remaining ponies compete in a consolation round which allows the ponies a second chance at making the final. There are no guest riders in the Dressage Pony finals. This year saw a huge 5 yo class of 44 ponies, up from 32 starters last year. The top 8 went straight to the final with highest qualifier, Weser Ems gelding Carleo Go WE (x Constantin x Weltmeyer) scoring 8.2. The 2014 4yo Gold Medal winning Westfalen stallion D-Day AT (x Dance Star AT x Notre Beau) qualified equal second with Weser Ems stallion Kastanienhof Cockney Cracker (x FS Cracker Jack x FS Don’t Worry) both on 8.1. The remaining ponies contested the consolation round with 11 ponies gaining scores to get them to the final. As can happen with the Bundeschampionate, several ponies may not put their best foot forward in the first round and after placing equal 24th in the first round with 7.2, the Weser Ems mare Coole Socke WE (x FS Don’t Worry x Viktoria’s Colano) improved to top score with 8.1. The final of the 5 yo Dressage Pony class saw the best 13 ponies competing with D-Day AT winning back to back Gold

with a score of 8.3. Silver went to the Rheinland stallion FS Dorian Gray (x FS Don’t Worry x FS Cocky Dundee) with 8.2 who had qualified in the first round in equal 7th place and was the Silver Medal winner as a 4 yo. Equal Bronze went to Carleo Go WE and Tiger Hill 3 (x Top Anthony II x Sandro Song) who maintained his consistent score of 7.9. The 6 yo Dressage pony class is always watched with a lot of interest as it is these ponies that will hopefully progress to FEI pony competition and eventually the pinnacle of the FEI European Pony Championships. Numbers were the same as 2014 with 22 starters compared to 26 in 2013 and 36 in 2012.

Eight ponies went straight to the final with the Westfalen stallion Tackmann’s Don Alonso (x Der feine Lord AT x Black Boy) at his first Bundeschampionate gaining the highest qualifying score of 8.3. The 2014 5 yo Gold Medal winning stallion Del Estero (x Dance Star AT x Marsvogel xx) qualified second highest on 8.0. In the consolation round Churschill E WE (x FS Chicago x Viktoria’s Colano) qualified highest on 7.8 to earn a spot in the final. Twelve ponies competed in the final with the 2014 5 yo Bronze Medallist Timberlake winning Gold on 8.3. The Westfalen gelding is by Timberland out of a Top Karetino mare. Silver was won by Del Estero and after competing in the consolation round to gain a spot in the final, the Weser Ems stallion Churschill E (WE) won Bronze.

The stallion HA Galileo (x FS Golden Moonlight x Black Boy) was one of two ponies that qualified for all 3 disciplines. HA Galileo was the highest qualifier leading into the Bundeschampionate for the 5 yo Dressage Pony class, second highest qualifier for 5 yo jumping ponies and among the top qualifiers for the 5-6 yo Eventing ponies. Choosing to compete in the Jumping and Eventing Pony classes, the buckskin stallion placed 7th in the Jumping Pony qualifying round, equal 6th in the second round and 11th in the final. In the Eventing Pony he placed equal 7th in the qualifying round and 11th in the final.

Casablanca 107 (x Casino Royale K x Apslau xx) also qualified in all 3 disciplines, choosing to compete in the 5-6 yo Eventing Pony class where the Weser Ems mare placed 6th and was the highest placed 5 yo.

The Sports Pony Stud Book Society in the United Kingdom recently completed their Mare Grading Tour and first ever Youngstock Evaluation with some 60 mares graded into the SPSS Stud Book and 79 youngstock ranging from foals to 3 year olds. Conducted alongside the Evaluation Tour was the annual Stallion Grading with 10 stallions accepted.

Click on images below to see comprehensive reports on the Stallion and Mare Gradings and scores achieved as well as the Youngstock evaluations.

Horses up to 158 cms are accepted into the stud book and must be at least 2 years of age. The Supreme Champion Mare was Mystique (x Argentino x Voyage) scoring 84.17%. Mystique is a Scottish Sport Horse who the judges described as “superb”. The Reserve Champion mare was Stambrook Miss D’Mena (x FS Don’t Worry x Tsing Lite) scoring 83.33%. The Champion Stallion with a score of 82.15% was the Irish-bred Connemara Ardbear Spirt (x Coosheen Thyme x Village Boy) who impressed the judges in all stages of his grading. Stallions are either permanently graded (if they have proven performance and progeny) or are awarded a 3 year license which gives them time to prove themselves in both performance and as a sire. Youngstock were evaluated from foals through to 3 year olds along similar lines to the mare gradings. All bar 3 gained scores of 70% or more and 8 outstanding youngsters gained the highest Gold Premium grading of 80% plus. Top scores came from a variety of bloodlines including Welsh B, C & D, German Riding Pony and Warmblood crosses. All Gold Premium Youngstock were eligible to enter the Youngstock Final held on 16th October and although distance prevented a couple from attending, it was still a quality line-up for the judges. Each entrant was judged individually, in-hand and at liberty before entering the arena all together for the judges to have one last look and select their winners.

Champion Stallion Ardbear Spirit

The Small Horse Champion was awarded to the colt foal Wadacre Benedict (x Bretton Woods x Waikki of Wadacre). The Pony Champion was the German Riding Pony cross cremello yearling filly Miss Luna Eclipse (x Classic’s Charmeur x Joldis Charmant). The Reserve Pony Champion was the palomino Welsh part bred 2 yo gelding Bathleyhills Golden Lustre (x Bathleyhills Monet x Thistledown Copper Lustre). The Supreme Champion awarded from both the Small Horse and Pony Champions was Miss Luna Eclipse with Reserve to Bathleyhills Golden Lustre.

Over the next few Newsletters we are going to bring you highlights of events and competitions that have featured in past issues of ‘Sports Pony’ since the ASPR’s inception on 1st January, 2004. The very first issue of ‘Sports Pony’ was a black and white print copy, painstakingly stapled together page by page and posted out to members. Times have certainly changed with our newsletter now in full colour as an e-magazine available to anyone by clicking on a link! 2004 saw the very first Pony Dressage competition run by DNSW at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre with some 310 tests entered for the Associate competition.

2004 was the year that ponies, who were previously restricted to only competing at Introductory and Preliminary level in Eventing, were able to compete on equal terms in all classes with horses and, as of the 1st August 2005, adults were permitted to compete on ponies in Official Open Dressage with Official Junior and Adult Pony Dressage held for the first time at the NSW Dressage Championships in September, 2005. 2004 was the inaugural ASPR Assessment Tour.

PONY DRESSAGE IN 2005!!!!!! Most of you would be aware that in August of this year the National Dressage Committee agreed that as of the 1st of January 2005 adults would be permitted to compete on ponies in Official Pony Dressage.
