Hello members, Welcome to the Spring edition of ‘Sports Pony’. It has been an extremely busy few months culminating in the Pryde’s EasiFeed Open Dressage Championships run in conjunction with the Mitavite Victorian AOR Championships held on the weekend preceding the Nationals at Boneo Park. With the move from Werribee Park NEC and extending the event to two days, the feedback from the weekend has been amazing and we are delighted that from all accounts, riders had a great weekend and really enjoyed the competition. I was particularly impressed with the number of riders who contacted me when the call for pencillors and helpers was put out. We sincerely thank all of you for taking the time to volunteer as without your help, we just could not run the event. I must say the only way to recover from organising a major event is take the caravan with me and stay on for the Nationals! It was great fun being able to relax and just take photos of all the wonderful ponies during the week, as well as meet riders in person from states that otherwise, I wouldn’t get to see. The ASPR has implemented several new initiatives (hopefully we’ll never run out of ideas!) with our Stallion/Mare Test and the new Mare Breeding Crown Titles. An extensive amount of research and beta testing went into these and we look forward to seeing the further advancement of breeding programs and training to achieve them. Preparations are now well underway for the 2018 Assessment Tour so keep an eye on our Facebook page and web site for bookings which will open very soon. The ASPR Grand Champion Dressage Pony Award has been a huge success since it’s inception last year and I have some beautiful Grand Champion Small Horse rosettes that I’m very much looking forward to awarding. Safe riding, Margie Kuiper, Federal Secretary

When the idea of running two major championships over the weekend preceding the 2017 National Dressage Championships was first suggested, I nearly fell off my chair! To say it was a huge undertaking to run Preliminary to Advanced levels as well as the FEI Small and Big Tour tests each day, topped off with daily Open, Pony and AOR Championships and some Para Equestrian tests plus an overall AOR Championship was a bit of an understatement! This weekend is the result of many, many hours put in by both the ASPR Committee and the AOR Sub Committee and would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of several key organisers. Our ASPR President Rossanne Mason who sourced the ASPR sponsorship and provided support and direction throughout the entire process, Lizzie Schirmer of the Event Company who gained fantastic sponsorship for the AOR section of the program and was the very helpful link between the organisers and the amazing facilities of Boneo Equestrian Park with Fiona Selby. Also Keryn Conners and Janet Mould who co-ordinated all of our judges. Janet, the Chair of the AOR Sub Committee provided a great sounding board for ideas. We take this opportunity to thank both naming rights sponsors; Pryde’s EasiFeed who have been a long time investor in the Australian Sports Pony Registry and our events as well as Mitavite who continue their association with, and promotion of Amateur Owner Riders in Victoria. We especially thank our excellent judges, many who judged maximum numbers in their classes and who all provide valuable feedback to the riders. We also would like to sincerely thank the riders themselves for both supporting this weekend and answering the call for helpers to pencil, gear check and collect test papers. Without your assistance, there simply would be no event.

9 Entry numbers were overwhelming for this weekend, a ‘warm-up’ for the 2017 National Dressage Championships with several levels filling well before closing date and long reserve lists for many sections - a heads-up for next year is enter as early as possible! If for some reason you have to withdraw your entry prior to closing date, a full refund is made so it will cost you nothing to get your entry in early to secure your place. Although Preliminary is not offered at the Nationals, this level was very well supported by Open, Pony and AOR riders on the weekend and Saturday dawned with perfect spring weather. Winning the Saturday Preliminary Pony Championship was the ever young New Forest gelding Kapeta Kip owned and ridden by Alexandra Diprose. Reserve Champion was the Riding Pony mare Thalaba Ruby Dreaming ridden by Karen Cook. In the Preliminary 1.2 test, two ponies Kapeta Kip and Deveron Choc Rock outscored the Open horses. The Open Preliminary Championship was won by the aptly named Palomino warmblood gelding Limoncello ridden by Corinne Winch with Reserve Champion to the warmblood gelding Dunrobin Sunday Best ridden by Annemarie King. Winning the Preliminary AOR Championship for Saturday was Limoncello with Kapeta Kip winning Reserve Champion. The Novice section filled nearly a week prior to closing with a full field of 35 in each test and several on the reserve list so was always going to be a very strong class. The Pony Novice Championship and the special Rising Star Novice Pony Award on Saturday was won by the local pinto mare Raven Lodge Aura owned and ridden by Sophie Taylor. Reserve Champion was awarded to the Welsh Cob gelding Carwyn Monte Carlo and Sancha Butler from New South Wales. Open Novice and AOR Champion was the Warmblood gelding Samaran ridden by Gwyn Coulthard with the Hanoverian gelding HB Ronald and Tonia Wheeler from NSW winning the Reserve open and AOR titles. The Pony Elementary Championship was won by the Australian Pony gelding Marena Display ridden by Caitlyn Porter. Display is 23 years old and works like a pony half his age and achieved scores that would have had him right in the placings with the open horses. Reserve Champion was the Welsh B gelding Burrabong Ty ridden by Rosemary Nicholson.

Reserve Champion was the warmblood gelding Little Brave ridden by Zoe Vorenas. The AOR Medium Championship was won by the Friesian gelding Gandaway ridden by Meagan-Lee Black with Reserve AOR to the warmblood gelding Thamesbourne Sunsmart ridden by Lucy McNutt. Saturday’s Pony Advanced Championship was won by Ann Smiley and her homebred Riding Pony gelding Lynlea Flashdance. The Open Advanced Championship was won by the Westphalian gelding Frantonio ridden by Petra Lee. The AOR Advanced Championship was won by Frantonio with Reserve Champion to Lynlea Flashdance.

12 The Pony FEI Small Tour Championship was won by the Welsh B gelding Mithril Vagabond ridden by Louise Maguire with Reserve Champion to Garraboo Scoobie Doo and Jessica Hivon. Vagabond outscored the Open horses in the PSG and would have placed second in the Intermediate I test. His total score would have also given him the Open Championship, a terrific effort for a pony that Louise has bought all the way through from Young Pony classes. This result gave Mithril Vagabond a much coveted ASPR Grand Champion Dressage Pony Award. Winning both the Open FEI Small Tour and AOR Championships was Concordance ridden by Justin Hocking with Reserve Open and AOR to Isle of Damascus ridden by Kirsty Moody. The FEI Big Tour was split over the two days with the Pony Intermediate II won by the Welsh/Riding Pony and Quarter Horse cross mare Rosthwaite Tinkerbell and Pamela Bice from NSW. The Open Intermediate II was won by the KWPN gelding Captain Cooks ridden by Pauline Carnovale.

Sunday dawned to more beautiful weather with just as many tests to be ridden as Saturday. With the second day of competition was another set of separate Open, Pony and AOR Championships. The Overall AOR Championships for each level were decided for riders who had competed in all four tests over the weekend where the scores of both AOR competitors on horses and ponies were added back in together. Winning the Preliminary Pony Championship was the GRP/Welsh cross mare Deveron Choc Rock ridden by Natasha Moody and owned by Paula and Neils Hoffmann -Madsen. Kapeta Kip and Alexandra Diprose won the Reserve Championship. Giving a consistent performance for the weekend in all 4 tests and under 8 judges in total, Limoncello and Corinne Winch won their second Open Preliminary Championship. This combination also won the Preliminary AOR Championship as well as the Overall AOR Championship and a cash prize of $150. Dunrobin Sunday Best and Annemarie King won the Open Reserve Championship. The Overall Preliminary AOR Championship and $100 cash was awarded to Kapeta Kip and Alexandra Diprose.

The Pony Novice Championship was won by the part welsh mare Mubo Calypso ridden by Jessie Fleming and owned by Virginia Martin. Reserve Champion went to Raven Lodge Aura and Sophie Taylor who also won the second Rising Star Novice Pony Award. The Open Novice Championship was again awarded to Samaran and Gwyn Coulthard who also took out their second AOR Championship resulting in them winning the Overall AOR Novice Championship prize. A very strong performance by this combination given they competed in a total of 4 tests with 7 different judges. Reserve Champion Open Novice was awarded to the Warmblood/Riding Pony cross mare LBA Zhia ridden by Amanda Parsons from Tasmania. LBA Zhia also won the Reserve Champion AOR Novice for the day as well as the Overall AOR Novice Reserve Championship.

The Open Elementary Championship was won by the Warmblood gelding Yarramee Serendipity ridden by Sharyn McCombe. Reserve Champion went to the Hanoverian mare Sugarloaf Diamond’s Girl ridden by Cathy Branson. This combination also won the Elementary AOR Championship with the Reserve AOR going to Talingka Park Malachi and Kylie Fiedler.

Having won Reserve Champion Novice Pony on Saturday, Carwyn Monte Carlo and Sancha Butler from NSW stepped up a level to take out the Pony Elementary Championship. Reserve Champion went to Marena Display and Caitlyn Porter.

Winning the Overall AOR Elementary Championship and the prize of $150 cash was Donella Illusive and Lauren Bailey -Smith with Talingka Park Malachi and Kylie Fiedler winning Overall Reserve and $100 cash.

The Pony Medium Championship winner was again Imperial Debonair ridden by Melanie Clark. The Open Medium Championship was won by the Warmblood gelding Thamesbourne Sunsmart ridden by Lucy McNutt with the Reserve Championship awarded to the Friesian gelding Gandaway ridden by Meagan-Lee Black.

15 The AOR Medium Championship placings were reversed from Saturday with Thamesbourne Sunsmart winning the Championship and Gandaway in Reserve. Lucy and Thamesbourne Sunsmart scored well enough over the two days to win the Overall AOR Medium Championship with Gandaway and Meagan-Lee winning the Reserve prize. There was no Pony Advanced competition on Sunday due to scratchings. The Open Advanced, AOR and Overall AOR Championship was won by the Hanoverian mare Roxleigh Frangelica and Sally Toulmin with Reserve Champion Open Advanced, AOR Reserve and Overall AOR Reserve to the Warmblood gelding Romonov ridden by Sara Williams. The FEI Small Tour Pony Championship was won by Garraboo Scoobie Doo and Jessica Hivon. Winning the FEI Small Tour Open Championship and AOR Small Tour Championship was the Holstein/TB cross gelding Kooinda Saint with Concordance and Justin Hocking awarded Reserve Open Champion and Reserve AOR Champion. The Overall FEI AOR Championship was won by Concordance and Justin Hocking with Isle of Damascus and Kirsty Moody winning the Overall Reserve prize. The FEI Big Tour Pony Championship was won by Rosthwaite Tinkerbell and Pamela Bice from NSW after they won both the Pony Intermediate II test on Saturday and the Grand Prix Test on Sunday.

Credit - One Eyed Frog

There was no FEI Big Tour Open Championship or AOR Championship awarded due to scratchings. Following the Big Tour competition on Sunday, several unofficial Para Equestrian tests were offered to allow these competitors to ride in a competition atmosphere and the same tests they would at the Nationals. Winning the Individual and Team Grade IV Tests was Sharon Jarvis and Ceasy who had travelled all the from Western Australia to compete. Placing second in both tests was Zoe Vorenas riding Little Brave. It was generally commented on by both judges and spectators alike that the pony performances have noticeably improved with many of the pony’s scores being very comparable to the open horses with quite a few of the ponies registering scores that would put them in the top placings.

25 We sincerely thank our patron, Jilli Cobcroft for her continued support of the Australian Sports Pony Registry and Pony Dressage in Australia and it was a pleasure for both Rossanne and myself to spend some time with Jilli at the Nationals. Jilli has had an amazing life with horses. She was an FEI 4* and Eventing Judge for many years, judging at FEI level throughout Australia, Germany, Holland, Hong Kong, England, Thailand, New Zealand and Belgium. She also judged extensively in the show ring and showjumping. Jilli’s journey with horses started at the young age of 5 when she met a little taffy pony at Balwyn Sanctuary. She was hooked on horses from then on. Over the years Jilli and her husband Brien have had many great horses but two of Jilli’s most memorable were Nutcracker and Hutana. Nutcracker had a wonderful bond with Jilli and together as a partnership they went on to win Jilli’s first big Hack Championship at the Sydney Royal, also taking the prestigious honour of being the most successful exhibitor. This was dear to Jilli’s heart as Nutcracker was one of the first thoroughbreds to win at a major show. Until this time thoroughbreds were not that popular. How times change, as they became very successful and popular show horses. Nutcracker was not only excellent in the show ring, he was also good at dressage which is where the passion began. Jilli’s second most memorable horse was a New Zealand bred horse called Hutana. He was bred by the same sire as Ross and Ann Fields two famous horses Bailiwick and Mazeppa. Jilli and Hutana’s partnership began when none of the jockeys could ride him. He was so wicked but had great balance and courage which attracted Brien to take over the ride as an eventer. Brien and Hutana then when onto the Mexico Olympics where Brien had 2 horses. As time went on Jilli gave her horses to Brien whilst she focused on raising the children. It was at this time she was attracted to dressage judging, a passion that would last a life time. Her first judging appointment was at the very young age of 19 in Tasmania. Jilli still had a passion for showing so she also judged many classes in this discipline ranging from thoroughbreds to Hacks to ponies to the Garryowen. In fact, Jilli gave Glenn Fryer his first Open Gentleman Rider at the Melbourne Show. In those days you had to go overseas to become accredited as a judge so Jilli was exposed to seeing the top horses in the world and she became fascinated with classical training. As the horses were not always as talented as today, the training was very important. Jilli was the first International Judge for Eventing and one of the first for dressage, reaching 4-star level. She recalls Reiner Klimke once telling her she should judge as she believed, that her competitors would be her best critics. Jilli has had a wonderful journey with dressage judging with some interesting overseas appointments. This has allowed her to meet some fascinating people. Jilli reflects on her time, that sport is such an equaliser, especially in the eventing world.

The ASPR Grand Champion Dressage Pony Award commenced on 1st August, 2016 and to date there have been nine very worthy winners who between them have shown that the ponies can win at any level. The first winner was Canter Home Flash, an Australian station bred pony out of a quarter horse x stock horse mare with unknown sire. Owned, trained and ridden by Heidi Bliesner in Queensland, Flash won his Grand Champion Dressage Pony award by outscoring the horses in the Preliminary Championship at the North Queensland Equestrian Group Championships in August, 2016.

The 7 yo Welsh D gelding Barringa Alexander won his Grand Champion Dressage Pony Award by outscoring horses in the Elementary Championship at the Elmore Equestrian Club Championships in December, 2016. Also registered with the ASPR is Heritage Park Chartreuse, an 11 yo buckskin gelding by Stanton Park Lemon Ruski out of Heritage Park Lesmis. His owner and rider is Amy Bachmann and the combination received their Grand Champion Dressage Pony Award by winning the Open Medium Championship at the Berwick and District Skye Park Classic in February, 2017.

38 The ASPR registered 16 yo gelding Balena Roy who is owned and ridden by Emily Fischer and by the Australian Pony stallion Fairlight Acres Royalist won his award at the Western Victorian Dressage Festival in early March, 2017. To top off a very special day, he gained the last few points required to win his Gold Roll of Merit Award.

Smash Hit Aria is a 7 yo warmblood pony mare by Smash Hit and out of a TB mare. She is owned, trained and ridden by Kylee Chandler and was the final winner of a Grand Champion Dressage Pony Award for the 2016/17 competition year winning the Open Novice Championship at Cooloola in July. As the new competition year commenced on 1st August, 2017, this combination repeated her Grand Champion win in mid August by outscoring the horses at the Fraser Coast Dressage Championships.

Rubern Landy Star is a 14hh palomino gelding with unknown breeding. With 14 yo rider Alisha Griffiths, the combination has had success riding as members of the Queensland YR Squad in Medium/Advanced levels at State, National and interschool Dressage competitions. ‘Barney’ and Alisha achieved their Grand Champion Dressage Pony Award by winning the Open Medium Championship at the Brenda Whitman Classic 2* at Gatton in August, 2017.

39 Ridden by Kristy Sparkes and owned by both Kristy and his breeder, Chris Milvain of Mithril Welsh Ponies, Mithril Velocity is by the Welsh C stallion, Bookra Sports Edition and out of Mithril Valerie (x Fairway Skyline). He won the Open Novice Championship at the Elmore Equestrian Club EA Championships in September after only just starting at this level.

Marena Display is a 23 years young Australian Pony gelding. He is 14hh and is by Marena Sky Chief and has been an amazing schoolmaster for Caitlyn Porter to learn on. They won the Grand Champion Award at the Boneo Spring Championships in September, outscoring the horses to win the Open Elementary Championship.

The Australian Sports Pony Registry is delighted to introduce Australian breeders to the new ASPR Stallion/Mare Test (AU) which will recognise assessed stallions and mares for undergoing additional performance requirements to their initial assessment. Stallion/Mare Test (AU) All ASPR registered stallions and mares who are assessed on future assessment tours (or have already been assessed) may undergo a further testing process and when successfully achieved, will be listed in the ASPR stud book with either Stallion Test (AU) or Mare Test (Au) recorded in their status. Prospective breeders can see at a glance that the stallion or mare has gone one step further from their initial assessment. Stallion/Mare Testing (AU) is an optional process following an assessment and is not compulsory; rather it is an additional ‘feather in the cap’ for breeding stock. All sections of the ASPR Stud Book are eligible for the Stallion/Mare Test (AU) including horses listed in the Small Horse and Over Height Registers. Phase 1 For the ridden assessment (minimum age 3 years) , the stallion/mare must achieve a total minimum score of 70% with no mark lower than 7.0. If the stallion/mare is not assessed under saddle on an assessment tour, he/she must gain :  a score of no less than 7.0 at a Young Horse/Pony qualifier, or  gain a score of no less than 70% in an official Equestrian Australia (EA) dressage competition, or  undertake a ridden assessment with a guest rider nominated by the ASPR and gain a score of no less than 70% with no mark lower than 7.0. Phase 2 To complete the Stallion/Mare Test (AU), 100 points must be gained from one or a combination of the following:

A Top 3 placing in the final at the Australian Young Horse/Pony Championships

1st = 100 2nd = 50 3rd = 25

A Top 3 placing in the final at a State Young Horse/Pony Championship

1st = 70

Has a qualifying score or has been nominated for a National Young Horse/Pony Championship (outside of Australia)

100

Gains a score of no less than 70% in an official EA Preliminary dressage competition

70

Gains a score of no less than 68% in an official EA Novice dressage competition

70

Gains a score of no less than 65% in an official EA Elementary or above dressage competition

If you own an ASPR registered stallion or mare who may meet the requirements for the Stallion/Mare Test (AU) or the Breeding Crown Titles, please contact the ASPR. More information and application forms are available on the ASPR web site.

61 Also available to ASPR registered assessed and non-assessed stallions and mares are the new Breeding Crown and Elite Breeding Crown Titles which will recognise their breeding value through progeny who consistently produce performance results to a high standard. Stallions and mares do not have to have achieved an ASPR Stallion/Mare Test (AU) in order to be eligible for a Breeding Crown.

Breeding Crown  Stallions and mares who are registered as Assessed or Non-Assessed with the ASPR are eligible for the Breeding Crown title.  Progeny do not have to be ASPR registered for progeny points to count.  All ASPR registered stallions and mares who attain the Breeding Crown title through progeny results will be recorded with the letters BC after their name in the ASPR studbook.  Registered owners may advertise them with the letters BC following their name and may also use the official Breeding Crown logo in advertising pertaining to that stallion/mare.

Elite Breeding Crown  When a stallion or mare has attained a Breeding Crown Title he/she may then progress through additional progeny results to the ultimate title of Elite Breeding Crown.  The stallion/mare will be recorded in the ASPR stud book with the letters El.BC after his/her name which will denote an instantly recognisable standard that has been achieved.  Registered owners may advertise stallions and mares who achieve the Elite Breeding Crown Title with the letters El.BC following their name and may also use the official Elite Breeding Crown logo in advertising pertaining to that stallion/ mare.

62 Topping last years record number of nations and riders 16 teams and 65 riders competed in Kaposvár, Hungary for the title of 2017 FEI European Dressage Champions.

NK Cyrill and Jana Lang (Ger)

With the Team Dressage scheduled as the first competition, the test is split over two days to cater for the large number of riders with five judges scoring the ponies. Each nation may present a minimum of 3 riders and maximum of 4 with the lowest score dropped to determine the Team placings. The first day of competition was interrupted by a major storm with only five more riders to go in the team championship test. These riders were rescheduled to part 2 of the team test the following day. Winning Gold in the team competition was the 11 yo Palomino Weser Ems stallion NK Cyrill (x FS Champion de Luxe x Power Man) ridden by 14 yo Jana Lang scoring 74.795% for the German Team. In a very close second place was Denmark’s Vegelin’s Goya (x Verona’s Bo-Gi x Leunsveld’s Darling Boy) on 74.231%. Ridden by 16 yo Louise Christensen and in her last year as a pony rider, the Silver Medal is the ponies best result in the 5 years he has competed at the Europeans. The Bronze medal in the team competition went to Germany with the 12 yo Holstein gelding Zinq Massimiliano FH (x Monsun x Cap Cennedy N) ridden by 13 yo Lucie Anouk Baumgurtel. With 4th place to Germany’s Der Klein Koenig 3 (x Dornik’s Donovan x FS Don’t Worry) ridden by Julia Barbian, Germany secured Team Gold. 2nd place from Vegelin’s Goya, a 5th place from Prince of Glory who is by Australia’s own Triple Trees Prince Perfect and a 10th place from Lilo L (Notre Bac x Manitu N), the Danish team took out Team Silver for the second year in a row. Great Britain won Bronze with a 6th place from Madam’s Miss Maria (x Woldhoeve’s Silco x Wester Aikema’s Norbet), 9th from SL Lucci (x Lukas x Bazar) and 13th from Valido’s Starlight (x Valido x Capri Moon).

NK Cyrill is owned by Nadine Krause who competed him to great success at FEI Pony level winning Team Silver in 2015 and first place at many nternational competitions. At last year’s European Championships he was ridden by Inga Katharina Schuster where they won Individual Silver and Team Gold.

Cyrill was the bronze medallist in the 5 yo Dressage Pony class at the 2011 Bundeschampionate, won Silver as a 4 yo and Gold as a 3 yo. He has 4 licensed sons and a State Premium daughter in Germany. His most successful son is Clooney who was bred and is ridden by Nadine Krause. Clooney recently won the Gold medal for 5 yo’s at the Bundeschampionate and was also the Gold medallist as a 4 yo.

The individual competition was also held over two days and backing up her Individual Gold medal from last year, Germany’s Lucie Anouk Baumgurtel and Zing Massimiliano scored 77.366% and first place from four of the five judges to give them back to back Individual Gold. Snapping right at her heels and gaining her second Silver for the Championships was Denmark’s Louise Christensen and Vegelin’s Goya with 76.195% with Germany’s NK Cyrill and Jana Lang taking out Bronze with 74.707%. With the top 18 riders progressing to the Kur, it was fully expected that Massimiliano and Baumgurtel would back up their 2016 Gold medal, and that they certainly did. With music from Lord of the Dance, the combination completed their test with a one handed centre line and scored 81.55% from the judges. The Danish Louise Christensen and Vegelin’s Goya won Silver for their Kur. Vegelin’s Goya has been a family pony since 2012 and has been a consistent member of the Danish Pony Dressage Team. In 2012 and 2013 he competed with Louise’s elder sister Maria. From 2015 he has been ridden by Louise who is now in her last year as a pony rider. This year’s championships have been his best with double Silver.

66 Winning the Bronze medal in the Kur was the palomino stallion, Der Harlekin B (x Golden Dancer x Dornik B) ridden by Denmark’s Sara Aagaard Hyrm. Also in her last year on the ponies, Hyrm has competed with the now 15 yo Rhinelander stallion since 2015.

Der Har Aagaard

After achieving their best team placing ever with Silver at this years Championships, Denmark will have to start from scratch again next year with 3 of their pony riders moving out of the pony dressage ranks and, it is expected that their ponies will move on as well. The Dutch Welsh stallion Vegelin’s Goya has already been offered for sale.
