Before I left Germany, or better Europe, or even better, the northern hemisphere, everybody over here was looking jealously at me stating: “Wow, you’re so lucky to spend your holidays Down Under!” If they only knew….
I would kindly ask the representatives of the participating organisations to stick their heads together and discuss some sort of selection system, and to encourage other breed organisations to participate as well.
From a retrospective it was a wonderful experience, an adventure and definitely the best organised event I have ever participated in…but a holiday? Not so much.
Australia has to find its own way of breeding; not by reinventing the wheel and neglecting improvements made in other countries, but looking at a balanced system of progression vs feasibility. I’d be more than happy to assist you in any way.
The National Tour as such, and this years in particular has been, from my point of view a kaleidoscope of Australia’s horse breeding. Traveling more than 7,000 km from Brisbane to Perth through an exciting country with scenic views and breathtaking nature just formed the background of what I came to see;, your wonderful horses. All of them bred with a maximum amount of passion and dedication. So my first impression was that you Australians just love your animals to bits! Which sometimes I would like to see a little more over here in Europe, since in some places we tend to slip more into the industrial side of the house. Serving four different breeding organisations this year, it is very obvious that the horses I assessed couldn’t have been more different. Everything from remarkably moving mini Pintos, noble Trakehners, excellent jumping Holsteiners, stunning German Riding Ponies up to an impressive Friesian Stallion, excellent Shagya Arabs and multiple warmbloods and crossbreeds were shown. Without going too much into detail, I would like to sum up my overall impressions :
Australia, with its wide-spread, low density horse population has done a remarkable job so far. Due to the enormous distances between horse breeders, communication in the breeders community needs to be intensified. Preferably physically (meet, sit down and talk) or at least via social media or email. Stop multiplying horses, intensify breeding.
There is an urgent need for a selection system for stallions as well as for broodmares. Please do NOT go on using unselected horses, since as stated above you will otherwise continue to multiply instead of breed and there will be hardly any progress in breeding for the next decade.

Once again, Trakehners Australia Inc., organised a National Australian Breed Tour 2018, with the esteemed visiting International Trakehner Verband Classifier, Mr Frank Wiesskirchen for March 2018 – and what an amazing success it has been. Mr Wiesskirchen is a noted international FN Judge, and CEO of Isselhook Stud Germany, where he breeds excellent Trakehners, as well as being the International Marketing Manager for some of the best Trakehner stallions in the world. In conjunction with the Australian Sports Pony Registry Inc., the Holsteiner Horse Association Australia Ltd., and the Independent Pinto Horse Society Inc., Trakehners Australia was able to co-ordinate a Tour of Australian bred horses which are of world class ability and performance. Mr Wiesskirchen was impressed with the high standard of horses now being bred in Australia, and the focus direction of those breeders who continue to breed horses for the international market and international level competitions, and as well, that the Australian Breeders are raising the bar within Australia, for the standard of horse being bred for Australian competition. Trakehners Australia Inc., takes great pride in being able to organise a National Australian Tour, which is professional and very organized and which meets the high standards required at international breed tours across Europe, UK and the USA. Trakehners Australia Inc., is a member society of the Trakehner Verband of Germany, and part of the Hessan Group Trakehner Verband, and thus, we are required to follow their governance and guidelines in the breeding of pure Trakehners in Australia. Australia’s first Shagya-Araber Sport Horse breeding program The Shagya-Araber is a medium sized (15.1-16.1hh) sport horse combining the elegance and stamina of the Arabian with traditional European cavalry lines. The goal is an elegant, yet substantial Arabian bred riding and carriage horse, with a kind temperament. The ShagyaAraber breed was developed by the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the late 1700s, and is a foundation horse for many warmblood breeds, particularly the Trakehner. It is found in the pedigrees of many wellknown international eventing horses.

Kingston Park Warmblood Stud is a specialty Trakehner, Holsteiner and Hanoverian Warmblood Horse Breeding Stud dedicated to producing exceptional foals from Europe’s quality performance stallions. What an amazing Assessment Tour 2018 was. It was lovely to welcome back our assessment partners and friends Trakehners Australia and the Holstein Horse Association and nice to see the Independent Pinto Horse join us for the first time and bring a showing format to their part of the Tour. A total of 102 horses and ponies were assessed. The ponies in Australia continue to go from strength to strength as was demonstrated by the scores achieved by some of our lovely stock presented across all categories. Congratulations to our winning breeders, full results appear later in the magazine. Our assessor this year was very much an unknown quantity, one thing was certain, he did have huge shoes to fill in the footsteps of Matthias Werner. On paper Frank Weisskirchen was superbly credentialed and well respected. None of us had met him and we opened our doors not really knowing what the new guy would like horse and pony wise. We needn’t have worried, Frank was awesome. He was constructive, knowledgeable and a lovely person. The Tour visited studs in NSW, Victoria, Queensland, WA and South Australia. It was a very hectic three weeks on the road for Tanya Hosford who is so professional in arranging these tours. All groups benefit from her knowledge and determination to get things done. The ASPR cannot thank her enough for all her efforts. As part of the Tour, the ASPR held two really well attended open days, one at my property in the Yarra Valley and the other at Vice President Kristy Jarvis’s Dynamik Stallions in Perth. Both properties were open to the public and everybody was encouraged to attend and watch our assessments and listen to Frank give a talk on preparation and the correct way of going for saddle ponies and horses for a successful presentation for assessment. Frank was very generous with his time and knowledge and went into great details about the reasons for each ponies scores. These days are massive undertakings to organise. A special thanks to our Federal Secretary Margie and Committee member Lynn McIntyre who both came such a long way to be here and support the ASPR. Without these hard working committee members, we couldn’t offer the things we do. Thank you also to member Alex Parratt for lending her Cob Grantulla Leviathian as demonstration horse for the saddle component of the talk. Levy behaved beautifully and showed the correct way of performing lateral movements and transitions within paces. He was such a star! It is such a rewarding experience getting stock benchmarked against their European counterparts in an orderly and professional way. ASPR ponies featured in the overall Assessment Tour Awards with one of the Penmain ponies, Penmain Diamonte awarded highest scoring individual of the entire tour. I encourage anyone wishing to take part in our Tour to contact any one of the committee to be a part of the excitement and the challenge of presenting sport ponies and horses. Did you know that you do not have to have your pony/horse assessed on the Annual Assessment Tour to be able to register with the ASPR? While an independent and unbiased assessment done by an internationally qualified assessor can be added value for breeding stock or youngsters for sale, it may not be what you require at the present time. You can always register now and get an assessment on a future Tour. If you simply require a registration that lists the pedigree of your pony or horse, then non-assessed registration is the way to go. The ASPR will register any breed and colour of horse or pony - there is no complicated ‘formula’ to work out breed eligibility. The ASPR is completely non breed specific. Providing your pony is 148 cms (14.2 1/4hh) or under without shoes or your horse is over that height, then they can be registered - with or without known pedigree. Non-assessed ponies and horses receive the same comprehensive Equine Identification Document as assessed stock and are also recorded in our online stud book, a valuable research tool for breeders and potential buyers. Our online stud book lists extensive pedigrees, other registrations (where known), awards and titles and much more. The Stallion/Mare Test (AU) is an additional process to the conformation and free movement assessment of breeding stock which is carried out on the annual assessment tours. The Test acknowledges that the stallion/mare has shown both rideability and trainability by attaining a certain standard under saddle. Any stallion or mare that has been assessed on a previous ASPR Tour or has been assessed/classified by a recognised stud book, may be eligible to commence their application for a Stallion/Mare Test (AU) title. When a Stallion/Mare Test (AU) title is achieved, the title will be recorded in the ASPR online stud book, allowing potential breeders and buyers to see at a glance that the stallion or mare has successfully completed the Test. Note : stallions/mares assessed with recognised stud books other than the ASPR, must apply for ASPR registration before a Stallion/Mare Test (AU) title will be considered. The owner must also become a current financial member of the ASPR. Here are some examples to help understand the Stallion/Mare Test (AU) process : Example 1 - a filly foal was assessed and registered with the ASPR in 2013 for conformation and free movement and gained a total average score of 75% (minimum score required is 70% with no mark lower than 7). As a 4 year old mare, she competes under saddle and gains a score of 7.0 at a Young Horse/ Pony qualifier. She is deemed to have completed Phase 1. The mare then goes on to compete at the Australian Young Horse/Pony Championships (D& JWTS) and wins the 4 yo final. The mare is deemed to have completed Phase 2 by gaining the required points and has now earned a Mare Test (AU) title. Example 2 - a 5 year old stallion was assessed and registered with the ASPR in 2015 and following his conformation, free movement and under saddle assessment, he gained a total average score of 73% (minimum score required is 70% with no mark lower than 7). He is deemed to have completed Phase 1 as he completed the first under saddle requirement at his initial assessment. The stallion then competes in an official EA Preliminary test and achieves a score of 72% giving him 70 points. He then gains a second score of 70% (and 70 points) so now has the required minimum of 100 points to be awarded the Stallion Test (AU). Example 3 - a colt foal was assessed for conformation and free movement with a recognised stud book (other than the ASPR) in 2011 and gained a score of total average score of 75% (minimum score required is 70% with no mark lower than 7). As a 5 year old stallion, he gained a score of 70% in an official EA Preliminary Dressage test (satisfying Phase 1 of the ridden requirement). The stallion then gained a second score of 70% in an official EA Preliminary Dressage Test earning 70 points towards the total of 100 points required for Phase 2. He gains a 68% in an official EA Novice Dressage Test earning 70 points. He has earned 140 points and has met the requirements of Phase 2. Although not registered with the ASPR at the time of assessment or gaining the required scores under saddle, upon successful application for registration and membership of the ASPR, the stallion is eligible for the Stallion Test (AU) title. As the Stallion/Mare Test (AU) is a new initiative in Australia, stallions and mares may earn these titles retrospectively if they are deemed to have met Test requirements. Following successful registration with the ASPR (and the owner becoming a financial member), all applications for the titles will be considered.
There have been many quality performance ponies bred over the years with a great majority remaining largely unrecognised outside of the show arena. With the advent of pony dressage and jumping, and although these disciplines are still very much in their infancy, quality performance ponies are competing successfully at State and now National level for dressage and jumping. However, it is the breeding value of the bloodlines of these successful ponies that needs to be recognised and recorded for future breeders and riders. To this end, the ASPR has introduced the Breeding Crown titles for stallions and mares who can gain these titles through progeny performances. Stallions and mare do not have to complete a Stallion/Mare Test (AU) to be eligible for a Breeding Crown, nor do they have to have been assessed. The stallion or mare must be at least registered non-assessed with the ASPR (and the owner a current member) to be eligible to have progeny results calculated for a Breeding Crown. Once a Breeding Crown is gained, the stallion or mare will have the initials BC recorded after their registered name in the ASPR online stud book. Stallions and mares gaining an Elite Breeding Crown title will have EBC recorded after their registered name. Breeders and potential owners and riders can see at a glance that the stallion or mare has consistently produced progeny to a high standard. All stallions and mares that are awarded a Breeding Crown or Elite Breeding Crown title may advertise them as such, establishing an instantly recognised standard of excellence. As the Breeding Crowns are a new initiative in Australia, stallions and mares may earn these titles retrospectively. Following successful registration with the ASPR (and the owner becoming a financial member), all applications for the titles will be considered.

The Holsteiner Horse Association of Australia was first formed in 1975 after the importation from Germany of several Holsteiner stallions which included Flaneur, Romedio, Wildfeuer and Talisman. In the early eighties Contact and Falkland arrived and together these stallions formed the Foundation Sires of our Association. It is the aim of this Association to register and promote Holsteiner horses in Australia and to lay down breeding guidelines for breeders to follow. In the short space of time Holsteiners have been in this country their influence has been outstanding. We have seen Talkind and Colleen Brook represent us overseas in Showjumping and Close Encounters and Jadalco (Imp now exp) performed well on the World Cup circuit, as well as several talented young horses who are rapidly rising through the ranks including Jeff Bloomfields mount Williamsburg and David Dobson's Supanova and Kelly Anne Crowes Too Red as well as the Noblewood Park imports Collins, Cantara, Carlotta and Lidwina. In the dressage world an early Flaneur stallion Condor went to Prix St George, Isle of Hinton and Snowview Romboli competed at Grand Prix and on a National level horses such as Barrabadeen Troubadour (Aust. Champ Prix St George) and HRH (starting at Inter I and II) are waved the Holsteiner flag. It is the aim of the Association to produce a horse who is well balanced, 16 to 17hh with round generous strides and natural elastic movement. We seek to produce a bold willing horse which is physically and mentally able to perform at a level of excellence in the modern sport horse disciplines. We at the moment have over 1500 horses registered with us and many licensed stallions and with the importation of frozen semen becoming so popular we can see the fame and success of the Holsteiner horse really excelling in the years to come. There are many talented young horses out there so watch out for the Holsteiner bred horses in the years to come or, even better, why don't you experience one yourself!

The IPHS Inc is a performance focused society and encourages members and their Pintos and Pintaloosas to participate in their chosen equestrian discipline - from the show ring to the showjumping arena, from dressage to sporting, eventing, barrel racing....
The Independent Pinto Horse Society inc was honoured to be invited to take part in the 2018 National tour conducted by Trakehners Australia and have a Pinto and Pintaloosa category included. IPHS found the organisation of the tour extremely professional and as it was our societies first year we were helped at every step by Tanya Hosford. IPHS are very pleased with the entries we received across Australia with a good number of Pinto entries across a range of breeds. A lovely stallion in the Pintaloosa section really took the fancy of this year’s assessor Frank F.W. Weißkirchen. The Tour provided IPHS with the opportunity to provide all Pinto & Pintaloosa entry’s with a ‘National Show’. At the completion of the tour in all states the entrants received ribbons for their results in their individual classes, sashes for Champion & Reserve in each section and National Supreme Champion was awarded for our Overall Halter Pinto and Overall Halter Pintaloosa. IPHS looks forward to working with Trakehners Australia again in 2019.
