EDITOR'S NOTE When people say "sales is in my blood" I know exactly what they mean because sales is truly in my blood.

Sales is a skill that every single human needs to master. From parents to CEO's.

I started my career in the sales and marketing department in main stream media (channel 10) and it was an eye opener because I learned how to reverse engineer sales starting with the consumers desire in mind and then delivering a solution to meet that desire.

Sales wasn't as dynamic in the early 90's.

It was raw and very much based on a human to human relationship. I loved that aspect of sales because I learned how to read people and most of I learned the art of communication and how to take a prospect on a journey from start to promise.

The difference between then and now is technology. Humans are humans. We still crave relationships but somewhere in between, we have lost the heart.

Think about it. Can an AI robot connect with a human heart. The answer is NO.

We have all had experiences with BOTS acting as humans and its cold and logical.

Sure, it has a purpose but it can never replace a human heart.

I believe when you sell, it's the soul that speaks to another soul. That is why we get a bad "gut feel" when someone is trying to sell us a solution with aggression and urgency.

I truly believe that selling with love is the future of wealth creation. To master this, it starts in the heart not the head.

Mary Jason Marc Campbell is the creator of the “Selling with Love” podcast and the author of the upcoming book called Selling with Love. He interviews thought leaders from around the world on topics of leadership teams, building communication, productivity, and so much more. Thank you so much for this lovely introduction. It made me think that you must work in branding, because you've really been able to package this in a beautiful way. So I'm very grateful.

Mary You are absolutely welcome. So, let's start with the obvious. What does selling with love mean to you?

Jason Oh, well, selling with love is interesting, and it's one of these concepts that at first was unconscious to me. I remember when I was in high school. I don't know if you had this when you were in high school, but they made us do these charity drives where we had to go and sell chocolates. And one particular one was these chocolate-overed almonds and the marketing was pretty cool. It was actually called the world's finest chocolate, although that might have been a bit of deceptive marketing there, but we believed it

at that time. I was from a small region, and they were asking us to sell this. It was like $2 chocolate bars and proceeds would actually go towards charity. I remember I would go to the first house and I just knock on the door like a doorto-door salesman at the age of 16.

I find it fascinating that most people's relationship with sales usually doesn't come through such a positive experience.

I don't know if that's child labor or not, but I was a volunteer. So, I guess it was okay. And I said to the first person, ''Hey, do you want some chocolate? It costs $2.'' This was Canadian dollars, a little cheaper than American dollars, about the same as Australia. And, people would be excited.

They'd be ecstatic. They'd say, ''Oh, chocolate!

Nice little treat. This is fantastic. Supporting a charity. Let's do it.'' So some of the first impressions I had around sales were really positive.

Now it gets a little funny because by the fifth door that I ended up at, the lady said, ''Well, let me ask my daughter.'' And then she called her daughter who turned out to be the same age as me. I ended up selling the chocolate and connecting with her, when I didn't even know who she was.

She ended up being one of my first partners, and my first girlfriend. And so you could say selling with love was maybe born through those first interactions.

But what I find fascinating is most people's relationship with sales usually doesn't come through such a positive experience. It usually comes from maybe a major emotional purchase for them or for someone else. I think the most common example that comes up is a used car sales purchase that might have gone astray. It might have not have gone exactly how you wanted, and you're left with a sour taste in your mouth around sales.

And I found that sad, because I realized how sales is such a beautiful thing and is the foundation to all the abundance we get to enjoy in our everyday lives. I know we were talking before, Mary, about your buying a new computer. And it was such a wonderful experience to get a great product at a good price that solves problems in your life.

That's a great sales experience that you had, but most of us are still going to remember the negative sales experiences that we have.

And when we start having blocks around sales, we hold ourselves back from promoting ourselves the way that we should to get the impact that we want to make.

We start rejecting the ideas that would actually allow us to grow our business, to retain the right people, to grow our team, to make more sales in the process. But when we get to unlock this and do it from a place of love, I've seen people turn around, change their business, and finally feel that ''Wow, I can sell. And I don't need to do the slimy preconceptions that I have around sales. I can do it authentically and with integrity.'' And when we do that, I think it's the ultimate competitive advantage.

There's a point in our lives where we ask, whether it's in our career or our relationships, ''What am I doing? Why am I here? Why does this even matter? Should I be making a change in my career? Who am I married to? Is this the relationship I want?

Or am I dating the right person?''

Mary Jason, you have a longstanding relationship with Mindvalley, of course, who are best known for representing high-profile authors, coaches, academics, all experts in their domain. You are very experienced in interviewing high-profile people who come across as very successful people. And I do say who come across, because we are making the assumption that they are successful. Now I'm asking this question because so many coaches see these people on social media who post their wins and their perfect life and their successes, etc. And from your experience, do these people seriously have it together? I mean, are they genuinely selling their expertise with love? Are they pulling in the right people because they genuinely have a solution to a problem? Or is it pushing sales disguised as love?

Jason That is such a great question to ask, because I think the industry as a whole has a lot of lack of integrity. There are so many ways in personal growth or personal transformation that you can take advantage of people we're talking about something that's really sensitive.

You're talking about maybe going through some of your darkest days, and you're looking for a solution. There's a point in our lives where we ask, whether it's in our career or our relationships, ''What am I doing? Why am I here? Why does this even matter? Should I be AUTHORITTI5.0 MAGAZINE

making a change in my career?

Who am I married to? Is this the relationship I want? Or am I dating the right person?''

Or maybe it's time to start dating someone if you're single, and you start realizing you want to make a change, or maybe it's in your health and fitness area. You're like, ''Whoa, I'm not at the weight that I want to be. I don't feel healthy. I'm getting older.

Something needs to change!''

Those are the big three, you know, in personal growth: the health, the wealth, and the relationship. And we usually come to a point where we want to make changes. And then we end up going on places like Google, maybe starting a search asking how to change careers.

And this is where the industry

can actually have a predatory type of marketing. I remember when I first started at Mindvalley, even before I started there, I actually had a chance to visit their office.

I worked in an industry that was teaching people how to make money buying real estate. And it was an industry that I thought traveled more into the gray area.

I was not proud of all the sales that I'd made there. I was drinking the Kool-Aid, and I was in my early twenties. And I even was a victim of it! I bought a coaching program that promised to fund every deal only to realize they wanted to put me in a room, record a testimonial, and then the person disappeared. I have a big passion to see that bad marketers and salespeople

should not have a place to exist.

And to do that is to teach the right people with the right product to market effectively.

So the ethical businesses win, and this was the reason I wanted to work with Mindvalley because I looked at the leader and this was visionary. What I noticed in him is first is that he is actually human, and second, he's not perfect. And when I joined his company, first I saw that this man has a bold vision. And second, he’s trying his best and wants to be able to do it the right way. And so of course you can have bumps. You can have like little places that you trip up, but I could see that this company truly wanted to bring transformation for people. And this is why I decided to align myself with this industry, because

I could see that they were looking to do things differently.

And to answer your question more directly, I've gotten a chance to interact with so many people. I've seen the ones who aren't necessarily at the level of integrity that you would expect of them. But I see two sides of the story as well. When somebody is putting themselves out as a leader, people put them on a pedestal and expect perfection.

But what I have noticed from most of these people is they're humans. Just like everybody else, they are trying their best, but they do understand the power of sales and marketing and why it's so important to use it if you want to push your mission forward.

And if you're not doing it from that place of integrity, if you've been taking advantage, you're

not delivering the product. These were not typically people we would associate ourselves with.

We were actually looking to push the bar so that it would be harder for anyone to get away with doing a marketing first, noproduct-type of approach, and actually make it so that people expect more. And so when you have an organization that is pushing the industry forward, so that the entry bars are higher, then you have to put more work into it to make sure that people realize you're authentic. And the other side of the coin is actually as buyers, we need to become more educated. We need to ask more questions. We need to demand more from the people we buy from, because if we don't make those demands, the transformation will not be there.

Mary You know what, Jason? You just raised a very important point.

Two words that come to my mind immediately are personalization and individualization. And my view is that sales will be one of those areas that that will be impacted, given that technology has taken over our lives quite literally and will enhance every aspect of our lives. Now when you go to a website, there's a chat bot. You are bombarded; you're followed on social media.

You literally can't get away from the opportunity to sell to somebody, but personalization and individualization to me are two critical parts of the human experience when it comes to selling and purchasing. What's your view on that?

Jason One of the things I'll touch on is this aspect of technology. I remember in the '90s, maybe the early 2000s, the internet was coming out and there was almost a celebration. People were saying, ''Wow, look at this. We can access all the information. We won't need sales people anymore.'' And so the sales industry actually got a little shook up because it felt that the role as sales people was to be the guardian of the information. And we would often find ourselves being manipulated because as the buyer, we didn't have access to this information. And once we had that access, the next thing that happened, which you've already touched on, is now everybody had the tools to take away people's attention.

And so now our attention has been completely bombarded with messages everywhere. And most of these messages do not have the two aspects you spoke about. They're not personalized, and they're not individualized. So we tune out. But what I'm seeing right now is there's the biggest emergence and the biggest need for salespeople of a different breed to be able to come forward and actually provide these individualized and personalized experiences for people. We're no longer gatekeepers of information. We are curators of information.

And especially for consultants and coaches who have struggles in sales, what you literally need to be doing better now is helping people to understand that you have a solution for what their problems are. And so I think that the evolution of the salespeople brings even more authenticity and more integrity, and those are going be the ones who are going have a lot of success in this age, where you need to personalize and you need to individualize in the process Mary Which is why we really need to focus on understanding what it actually means to give your prospects an ecstatic brand experience. It's a part of that pre-sale process. I think Gary V talks about the whole idea of providing value, which he calls jab, jab, punch. And he's right. I've always believed in that philosophy from the standpoint of wanting to give you such an amazing experience that at the end of that free AUTHORITTI5.0 MAGAZINE

experience, you would pay for it. That's my whole angle when I'm doing pre-sales. What is your view on that?

Jason Well, one thing I'd bring up with respect to Mr. Vaynerchuk, whose content I absolutely love, is that I'm fascinated by the terms we use in sales and marketing like jab, jab, punch. You're saying that what you're going to provide for people are punches in the face, and it's like, wait a second. Are you trying to provide value? And so I love that you've used the terms give, give and offer. I know in the internet marketing field, it gets even worse.

They talk about creating a low price point product for people to convert from being a lead to a customer. It changes the relationship. They call the us a trip wire, which is a way of stepping on a wire that will

explode and dismember your potential lead. And I know there's been some rebranding. I prefer to call it a welcome mat. There are different words you can use, so that you can understand that if you're in the business of providing value, you don't have to compare it to ways of destroying people. That's a weird concept in itself. But what I would say is for people just starting out, I think branding and having all of this value creation is extremely important. I know a lot of times I see people feeling paralyzed, wanting to do all of these elements without having had a chance to get the sale done. And so one of the things that I would encourage sales people to do is realize that it actually starts with just finding one person and solving their one problem.

You'd want to make sure that whatever it is you deliver actually solves a problem and that you can actually help people. And I often am an advocate for people to say, ''Hey, if you feel that imposter syndrome, you don't feel like you're being successful in the way that you sell. It might be useful for you to get yourself inside an organization that can nurture your sales skills that can nurture your service delivery. So you can learn more because there is some fundamental things that you should be qualified in doing.''

And oftentimes I feel like we actually put all of the risk or the lack of performance within ourselves. We put all of that externality because of our lack of experience with our first customers. And one of the best things we can do for our own brand is find ways we can partner with organizations to execute on the service or product we provide and practice our sales so that when we go

out there, we can come with a strong brand because we've built on our experience. And so I think that experience is maybe the least talked about part of branding, but there are ways to deliver it without putting all that risk on the client.

Mary I absolutely agree with you. You know, Jason, I've come to realize that love is being unapologetically you and showing up each day in your natural state of being, meaning your natural gifts, your talents, your passions must be expressed every single day. And yet we have a serious problem in humanity. I think a lot of people want to be their true self, but they can't leave that $300,000 corporate job, which might mean they have to pull their kids out of private school and maybe homeschool them. So all in the name of keeping up with the Joneses, how do we describe love as a word, not just from a relationship standpoint, but in every aspect of our life? Because it does impact the way that we show up in the world; therefore, it impacts in the way we conduct ourselves in a professional scenario. If you've got a coaching or consulting business, or you're a business owner and you are in the business of selling your products and services, you have to understand the true nature and meaning of what it is to love, and also create love in every aspect of your life. How would you define that?

Jason That's a fascinating question. And it's actually something I spend a lot of time speaking about in my book, because if we're talking about love in the context of sales and everyday life, how does it get defined? And what I'd love to do is maybe actually define what sales is, so you can see where love fits into the equation. Because the way I define it is that selling is an energy exchange between conscious beings. And when I define it as such, there are a couple things that happen. I do use the word energy, not because it's one of those beautiful woo woo terms, but it truly is something that encompasses the fact that if you have a product or a service, these are actually energy. There's time that's been put into it. There are raw materials that are in it.

And so it can be qualified as energy, but the most important part that I love to quantify as energy is money. We often have triggers or baggage that come with the idea of money.

But if you look at it only as stored energy, you start asking for a product or service that's worth a certain amount of energy, and you're exchanging it usually for this stored energy, which would be money. Time gets into the process; risk gets into the process. But one of the most important

things to realize is that through every one of these exchanges there's also emotion. And this is where I start to expand it between not just products and services, but ideas or projects you want move forward. Or, let's say a simple example like personal life. Let's say you want to go to dinner and you're trying to pick where to go.

Somebody's going to sell someone on where you're going to end up. And this actually expands the concept of selling to being anything in communication and everything that we experience in life is through connecting with others. So while sales is everywhere now, where does love fit in? Well, in my concepts, I speak about the four major stages of emotions that you can sell from, but the highest one is love. When you know what you offer is so much more than what you ask in return, the emotion of love is what fills the gap, balances the equation, and is felt on both sides.

In business, you can try to quantify it by saying that doing all this foundational work will bring you $100,000 in business. And you're asking them to pay $20,000. That $80,000 gap is a surplus that I call the energy of love. And if you are always operating from this place, you start getting referral clients, and you start having more impact. You start having your own brand be built up in the process and in your personal life; it's like building a relationship with anybody. If you're always showing up with your passion, your purpose, being excited about delivering, you will feel it. And not just you; everyone you interact with will feel it. And so for someone who's looking to maximize their impact in the world, I think it's critical to be in alignment with what you're doing, because when you can tap into that energy of love.

It's also about just doing your best because there's always an inherent risk in every transaction. You could be offering branding and maybe the value isn't exactly $100,000. But if you spend the time to know the impact about what you offer, you spend the time to understand the buyer that you're selling to and how it's going to translate into their life, you actually are using the sales techniques that are authentic, non-manipulative, and aligned with your values. And you've done your own self work to not have imposter syndrome, to not have fear of rejection. Of course, there's still going to be a risk, but you've done your best to be able to minimize that risk and be bold in the way that you pitch. I get to use all the techniques because I'm truly just trying to show you just like a good friend would who wants to kick your butt to go to the gym. You're going out there and selling with love.

Mary That was just incredible. That was a masterclass just in itself.

view on this. I have found that 99% of the people I work with are driven by a mission first and foremost.

And the reason they're driven by a mission, to your point, is that they understand without a shadow of a doubt, how to solve a complex problem. Their heart, their soul, their skillset, their natural gifts and abilities are all packaged. So they're showing up as their whole entity.

When they're selling, they're selling with that level of conviction; they're not pushing. They're pulling people into their ecosystem, and they have the ability to walk them through a process whereby they have a start point and an endpoint that is outcome-driven. It's not consumption of content. It's giving that client not just an ecstatic experience, but a transformation every step of the way. Would you agree with that philosophy?

Jason I do agree with that philosophy.

And as we've also said before, when you have this certainty, this wholeness, this integrity, this awareness of the transformation, then you'll see that you can just be yourself, and people know the problem to solve. They have the same problem. They'll want to have it solved as well. What I often add is that there seems to be this concept that everything should be about attraction. This whole pushing on people is completely demonized, but I have my own reservations. I think that we are in a world where sometimes we do need to go and put ourselves in front of the people who could potentially have this problem solved. I think not all of us have our full awareness of what solutions are available out there.

And so this is where I would encourage people to say, ''Hey, don't demonize pushing your product on people, because sometimes it's just that right interruption that makes you aware of something that could truly make your life better.'' Sometimes it's going to be that ad that you run on Google, and you'll be the first result they see because you paid to be in front of them. And then they're like, ''Wow, I was about to choose something else. But because you decided to push your message in front of me, I've made a better decision.'' And this comes back to the concept we discussed earlier about personalization and individualization, spending the time to truly understand the buyer’s true needs, to start having things that are going be relevant to them. And I would push the relevant message

to the right people, so that they can become aware of what I'm doing. And I would not, again, demonize this aspect because if everything else you've set up allows them to be pulled in, then it's great to be putting out the fish lines and seeking out the people so they can discover who you are and start doing business with you.

Mary Jason, you mentioned before that you do have a methodology around the book that you're about to launch. Can you just walk us through that process, those steps at a very high level, just to position what people should expect when they're reading the book?

Jason The book is divided into two major parts. The first one is really for people who have sales blocks. I think love is a big word. And so the first part of the book is just saying, ''Hey, instead of hating sales, maybe you can just like sales a little bit.'' And so I walk people towards changing their relationship with sales, looking at what created the source of these blocks and really making sure that they're putting in the effort to make that change. In this part, I really make people understand the four different types of emotions that they can sell from, from shame, guilt, blockages, from the fear pride paradox to the rational sabotage. If they are really resisting selling it’s because they do not want to be a salesperson; they do not want to be perceived as that kind of salesperson.

If you're ashamed of selling, there's work to be done. The fear pride paradox is interesting because it's really about being real. When you start selling from a place of scarcity and are doing it for selfish reasons, you don't take responsibility for the sales you make. And sales is one of the most powerful tools we can use to shape the world. But if you're not being responsible for the sales you make, you'll be doing more damage than good. And it's fascinating to see that people who operate from this level usually are consumed with activities that numb their awareness of what exactly they're doing, whether that's substance abuse or other types of addiction that makes AUTHORITTI5.0 MAGAZINE

them not as connected with themselves because they're not being authentic.

They want to show, but they're not taking that responsibility. They're trying to put that responsibility on the buyer and as such, they're making fewer and fewer sales. And it's interesting because it comes across as this mask thinking that they do care more, but they're not taking responsibility.

I think when you go into that final emotion, the one about love is really caring, taking responsibility and taking risks for something you believe in. That's what it means to show up with love. And once you've gone through this first part, the second part gets a lot more

granular and prescriptive. There are five loves in selling: love the impact, love the client, love the product, love the process, and love yourself.

And although we actually end with the love yourself, it's actually where the whole thing begins. The whole book is kind of a way to map out everything around sales. So you can do it from a place of love, but where most people are going to realize that the blocks exist will be in the self. And that's where all the mindset training helps. Oftentimes we might gawk at it and think, ah, no more mindset; I just need that one tactic to be successful. But actually it's that big mindset shift that's going to change everything for you.

Mary I'm amazed. I've noticed that I

actually sell the way I buy. And I don't know if you believe in that concept, but it's so obvious to me that my Mac is a perfect example of the way I buy premium services and products. I expand that for myself, but that's how I sell my services as well. Does this fall under selling with love as well?

Jason Actually in the conclusion of the book, it's one of the more important messages that I want to bring forward. I mentioned earlier that we need to become better buyers. If we want to see a change where fewer people are doing marketing that is deceptive or fewer people are being pushy salespersons, we need to start signaling to the market that we expect more. this already. We see companies and technologies that have come out and revolutionized industries. Some of us might remember what it was like hailing a cab whenever we needed to go somewhere, and the price we needed to pay and the experience that we had in a rundown car, etc. Uber came along with what they said was a better value proposition. And it’s no accident that these services started taking over because they massively disrupted a problem that existed that nothing else was changing. And we got fed up and somebody came up with such a solution that it completely changed the game.

And so whenever you are finding yourself purchasing something that is below the expectation of what you wanted to purchase, are you spending the time to give the feedback? Are you refusing to buy and explaining to them why you didn't buy? Because enough of those signals are going to actually show the company that they need to level-up. And so the byproduct that I'm really excited about for people jumping into selling with love is they're also going to be buying with love, and asking more powerful questions in the process. ''What makes you work here? Are you excited about every sale you make? What have you done in the product to make me feel that it's actually worth the price that you're selling it for? Do you understand me better? You don't seem to understand me at all. I shouldn't buy from you.'' These are the conversations we end up having, and that's going to level-up entire industries.

Mary I'm just loving this conversation. Can I have another hour with you? Unfortunately we have come to the end of this interview, but there is one question that I don't let anyone get away with without answering. And I want to ask you this very personal question. If you could meet someone who is no longer living, who would it be?

What would you want to know? Or what would you ask them?

Jason I thought about this question before, and I am fascinated and curious about some of the Titans of industry from America and if they actually had a powerful vision or if they were perceived in a certain way because of how the majority likes to twist the messages. I think I might choose John D. Rockefeller. I mean, he was one of the richest men in the early 1900s.

demonized as a Titan because he's the one who brought oil to the world. He was buying out competitors. He was really ruthless as a business peer, and I think it would be fascinating to have a conversation to understand what motivated him to do this.

Something I know about his history is that he was in a near-death experience or actually had a divine intervention that prevented him from getting into a catastrophic train crash that killed nearly everyone on board. In the moment that this happened, he actually was quite the religious man and thought that it was divine intervention for him to move forward with a mission. And I'm very curious to know if that mission was personally motivated or impact motivated. I’d love to dig deeper about what motivates a man to be able to go so ruthlessly into business, to build this massive empire.

Was it just about getting rich and satisfying the ego? I'd love to have that conversation and see what actually made a man like that tick.

From an early stage, we all start experiencing different emotions. As we grow older we go through different experiences which shape our response to emotions.

Most people often take for granted their ability to feel and respond to emotions. Hardly do we stop and think about our feelings. We fail to see the impact both mentally and physiologically, or even how harmful it is to keep on holding onto our emotions in the long run.

Let’s take a deeper look at emotions, especially the negative, and see what causes them, the side effects, and also how you can deal with them positively for your wellbeing.

What are negative emotions?

Emotions and feelings are different things despite them being used interchangeably. We can describe the emotion as a response that occurs in specific areas of the brain which are responsible for giving reactions that directly impact our physical state.

Emotions give us a quick response to any threats around us. An area of the brain called the amygdala releases neurotransmitters that are key in keeping memory. This is why you find that it is easy to recall emotional memories.

MINDFULNESS

They are a part of us and the most important thing is to know when they arise and how to positively deal with them. Popular psychologists stated that there are eight basic emotions which include; anger, anticipation, sadness, surprise, fear, trust, joy, and disgust.

Some of these emotions have their opposite states to help us understand more about emotions. The following are a few examples of different emotions and their opposite.

Disgust is the opposite of trust.

Sadness is the opposite of joy.

Anger is the opposite of fear.

Anticipation is the opposite of surprise.

Examples of negative emotions Negative emotions are normal and we cannot be able to appreciate positive ones without them. But if you find yourself constantly dwelling on one kind of emotion, especially the negative one, you might need to learn why. Below are some of the most common negative emotions and what causes them.

Fear

Emotions are stronger than feelings and this explains why we find it easier to measure them physically through cues like heart rate, blood flow, body language, and facial expressions.

It’s a core basic emotion that warns us against dangerous situations, failures, and unseen obstacles. We don’t feel afraid to get stressed but this is to help us go through danger successfully.

Emotions can be generalized among all humans, but feelings are subject to personal experience and interpretations. Feelings occur in some parts of the brain and that is how we can respond to emotions individually. Unlike emotions, feelings cannot be measured because they are subjective.

Anger

Negative emotions can therefore be defined as unpleasant and unhappy cues that make individuals express themselves negatively towards an event or a person. It is very normal to experience all emotions despite having to label some as negative.

Has someone ever stopped you from doing something you wanted to? How did that make you feel? If it made your body temperature rise or felt like your blood was boiling, that could be a common description of anger.

Your body reacts to things not going your way and tries to rectify them. Throwing things around or shouting is a way of trying to get out of a situation.

Last month, I emphasized the importance of having a solid strategy in 2022 and shared five simple steps to build your strategic plan this year.

Almost a year ago, I started writing for Authoritti5.0 Magazine with my April article in a Growing, Scaling, and Improving Your Business column. Most of last year was focused on discussing business growth. This year, we will fixate on scaling your business to meet its growth.

Business scale is an often-misunderstood concept.

However, it is vitally important that you constantly examine the complexity the business growth brings and temper that growth with scale and improvement. This is why, in December 2021’s article I addressed the importance of Controlled Growth.

Many times, when you deliver a great product or service, growth simply happens. This growth can be exponential and unexpected. The problem is that the way you use to operate typically does not work as you grow and must change.

This is called your Operating Model.

A business’ operating model outlines how its endto-end processes (also called its value chain) delivers its products and services to its customers.

The model outlines how the business segments its operation by things like customer, industry, geography, products, services, specialties, skills, etc.

When a business starts out, a simple business operating model is usually focused on a single line of business. This is where most of (if not all) the business’ revenue is generated from. Typically, a new business tries to be all things to all its customers, with very little segmentation.

Businesses that are just starting out are like little kids, experiencing things for the very first time.

Growth, as I wrote in my August Authoritti5.0 article, occurs in six ways: 1. More customers.

2. More products.

GROWING, SCALING AND IMPROVING YOUR BUSINESS

3. More services.

4. Adjusted prices.

5. Recurring revenue.

6. Bundling.

All six of these things add layers of complexity to your business that it needs to quickly deal with. A business should be asking itself, at least annually, if the current operating model is still sound.

One major problem with many businesses – even Fortune 500 enterprises – is that they have never really defined their operating model. It just happens and struggles along the way.

The next stage in a business’ operating model is typically where they create several related, yet diversified businesses that all revolve around one central theme or business purpose. This tends to be a natural evolution of a business as it grows but is much smoother when the business’ leaders take time to analyze, address, and defined the changes.

As an example, a business coach might also start providing a training and education program based on his learnings and experiences with several clients.

Most businesses stick to the model of being aligned to one central theme or purpose. When I worked with Booz | Allen | Hamilton, its focus was always management consulting, but was segmented by customer types and by the ways it delivered its services. When I worked with the United Services Automobile Association (USAA) they delivered financial services through banking, insurance, investments, and wealth management.

These businesses each have tens of thousands of employees, and both reside on the Fortune 500 list. However, their business models always revolved around a singular mission and purpose.

Some business models grow to include several unrelated businesses that serve totally different customers, but they still benefit one another in some way. There is a common thread that creates a symbiotic relationship of all the businesses.

This can be a significant challenge for any business to adopt and requires a great deal of thought and professional expertise. A good friend of mine is a heavy equipment mechanic and owns his own business. He often talks about buying some pieces of equipment and starting a rental business. You can imagine how everything would change in the way he operated if he finally pulled the trigger on this plan.

The last type of an operating model is where you have a conglomerate. Investopedia defines a conglomerate as a corporation of several different related and unrelated businesses, each conducting operations separately and independently of each other.

These require a great deal of work to ensure they operate efficiently.

Your business operating model, no matter the design, does four things for your business, its employees, and its stakeholders.

1. It explains (typically visually) the complexity of the operation. This helps identify gaps and opportunities for improvement, while explaining to everyone how they fit in the business.

2. It provides a high-level blueprint of how the end-to-end business operates. This outlines who does what and why.

3. Most importantly, it defines the business’ Why – how it delivers value to its customers. This is vitally important to all stakeholders in a business.

If someone handed you a recipe that would help you enjoy faster career transition success while requiring just two hours of effort up front, would you use it? If your answer is “yes”, you’d be joining the nearly 75,000 people that have bought and read the 2-Hour Job Search by Steve Dalton.

His book is the culmination of sixteen years of building and refining frameworks that help people network for the purpose of getting interviews. His follow-up book, The Job Closer, shares similar approaches for resumes, cover letters, interviewing, negotiating, and more. Dalton’s strategies inform readers specifically how to approach job searching efficiently using recipe-like instructions rather than tips.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Dalton, and you will see many of his insights in the Q&A below.

and prioritize where you spend your time. What inspired you to write the book and then the update a decade later?

I am a rule follower at heart and like to follow formulas and recipes that work. Although I got good at creating resumes, cover letters, and interviewing well while a student – once the college and career center infrastructure went away, I didn't have the ability to source my own interviews. I realized I wasn’t taught how to proactively network or how to do informationals. It was always reactive. For example, I would go to events and hope a miracle would occur versus being armed with strategies on how to get strangers to talk with me. I didn’t know what I should talk about.

I started looking for a set of instructions.... For example, when you make lasagna, you don’t look for a list of ingredients, you look for a recipe to follow. Then, you modify the recipe to suit your taste. Instead of a recipe, I was only provided tips

and outdated concepts that didn’t work well. I was told, ‘Sell yourself.

Put yourself out there.’ These are counterproductive tips when used by the wrong people and simply selling myself had negative results.

What inspired me to write the first edition was the realization there was no recipe in the marketplace for networking for the purpose of getting interviews.

I thought this was unconscionable, so I set out to create that first recipe.

I thought this was unconscionable, so I set out to create that first recipe. After several years of practice, the recipe was ready for publication, and I called it The 2-Hour Job Search after the brief amount of time a job seeker actually needs to go from zero to launching a strategic, efficient, and effective job search campaign.

(Sadly, it doesn’t mean job seekers would have a job in two hours!)

After the initial two hours investment, though, I can give job seekers exact instructions from that point forward.) After a decade of experimenting with that recipe alongside my students, clients, and readers, I found more than enough improvements to make a second edition worth people’s time.

At the leadership level, there are naturally fewer roles, both visible and unadvertised.

Sometimes job titles are all over the map. What should more experienced professionals do to uncover unadvertised roles?

More experienced professionals don’t get the straight line between applying to a role online and getting an interview less experienced people often do. fishing for lobster rather than fishing for fish. When you fish for fish, you put bait on a hook, fish swim up, and you have dinner. Or they don't and you're right back with nothing to show for hours of effort you put in. Applying to job postings is like fishing for fish in your job search. You don't learn anything. It is like buying lottery tickets and hoping for a hit.

A well-executed job search is like fishing for lobster. Lobster don't swim up to hooks, so you buy cages you bait and drop in the water. You check the cages every day or two to see if you caught anything. You don't know which lobster cage will catch you a lobster, but you do know the more baited cages you have in the water the better your odds. Each networking connection brings you one “lobster cage” closer to employment.

Why do you think people are hesitant to network this way?

What people misunderstand is networking feels like a very indirect process, but it's the most direct route I've identified in terms of return on effort. Networking is the least-bad alternative when it comes to the best use of each minute of your time.

Look at the direct correlation between a unit of networking effort and the likelihood of an interview. I would argue an hour of time spent crawling job search websites to find a posting dramatically underperforms an hour of time spent requesting, conducting, and following up on informational meetings – especially as you become more expensive to employ and there are fewer jobs for which you are aiming.

At the undergrad level you can get away with applying blindly for a job because entry-level employees are relatively exchangeable. However, this reinforces bad lessons. You think, OK, applying worked last time so it should work for me again this time, but the odds drop as you gain more tenure, experience, and your salary expectation goes up.

People are resistant to networking because they’ve never formally been trained to network. What they’ve been taught is lists of uncomfortable, inauthentic, and outdated tips that work only for a fraction of people.

What happens with more experienced professionals who are decades-long experts in their field is they become especially self-conscious about not being great at networking. To do it well, they need to embrace a growth and learning mindset. This is critical when you are expensive to employ and when jobs are scarce at your level. They need to use an advocacy-based job search approach. With networking you want additional sets of eyes and ears looking out on your behalf.

You say referrals are the most effective way to get in front of decision-makers and the only way to get referrals is through networking.

Many people are initially resistant to this effective approach. What would you say to encourage people to get past their hesitancy?

If you’re the type who prefers to try building the bookshelf without reading the instructions, I encourage you to do that. If you prefer to follow the instructions, though, I can provide those to you.

The catch is that you must follow the instructions exactly. As with a recipe, if you don't add yeast or flour or add it in the wrong amounts the cake doesn't rise. I encourage people to try following the recipe, just once, exactly as I lay it out. Conduct three informational interviews. At that point, I find that people don't need me anymore and become completely self-sufficient.

You need to get people who know, like, and trust you to shepherd you in this process. The problem isn’t getting your resume RIGHT, it’s getting your resume SEEN. Even with a perfect resume, you still need to get someone to like you before they're going to pay any attention to it.

If you've spent eight hours on independent job search activities already and gotten a good return on that effort, keep doing it. But if that activity has left you feeling less confident, less successful, and more depleted I would say you don't have anything to lose trying out a proven recipe that offers predictable results. If you follow it exactly, I can tell you exactly what results to expect. Acting without a conscious plan or guiding principles sparks decision anxiety and does more harm than good. Imposter syndrome creeps in.

Some of my clients spend an inordinate amount of time obsessing over the details of their resume and exact word choices. They worry it’s not landing with their target audience. One issue is the job title could be different company to company and it is hard to know what the titles and jobs are like elsewhere. I encourage they dive in and learn about nuances by holding informational

A great study done by TheLadders.com years ago tracked recruiters’ eye movements when reviewing resumes and found, on average, people spend about six seconds per resume. 80% of that time, though, was spent looking at where you were employed, job titles, dates of employment, where you went to school, et cetera.

Basically, all the things you can’t change. But this is not the content that traumatizes job seekers! They obsess over bullet points. But the studies show you’ll get a 1.2 second skim for all your bullet points combined.

This is true. Aside from having a career coaching business, I also conduct executive searches for Talence Group. I’m conducting a CFO search right now. When I go to LinkedIn, I skim past the “About” summary to see if there is relevant work experience in bullet form first and a quick snapshot of quantifiable results.

I've talked to top tech employers’ recruiters about this specific topic.

In all cases, they said they’d start with the job title they were trying to fill. They were (rationally) looking for people who have done this job before somewhere else, ideally at one of their competitors.

Again, your job history isn’t something you can change. If I was an employer, I would also be ideally looking for someone who’s done the job before so I can plug and play. I want talent who will start at a fast pace. I’m not looking for career changers.

If you're a career changer you need to build advocacy. If you have a job title somewhere on your resume that relates, you might get a look. Otherwise,

you must network, especially as you get more experienced, and the job titles become less formal and more specific or rigid in what they are called. The importance of networking becomes greater and greater.

The idea of a system and framework is very appealing to analytical and systematic people. Sometimes, I get pushback the 2HJS is not geared toward leadership level people with over twenty-five years of experience.

What is the biggest distinction between early and late careerists when it comes to using the 2HJS strategies?

I've worked with job seekers of all ages, from college students to senior professionals. What I have found is optimal job searching activities don’t change over one’s career, however, the nature of the anxiety around those activities – networking, most notably – definitely does.

When I'm working with undergrads it's almost entirely fear of the unknown, especially FOMO and wanting the best possible option. When I get to my MBA students who’ve been out in the world awhile it is less about the fear of the unknown because they know how bad it is out there. Instead, there starts to be this sense of embarrassment and shame. They are at a top business school and have been successful but are still not confident in their ability to talk to strangers and get help finding jobs. (This often leads to an insistence on using any existing connections, regardless of their relevance, because developing new ones is such a daunting prospect.)

When I get to more experienced professionals with twenty-five years of experience and may be at the C-level, though, they know exactly how challenging a job search can be, but AUTHORITTI5.0 MAGAZINE

that fear of the unknown is replaced by large amounts of embarrassment, shame, and anxiety over not already knowing how to confidently network one’s way through a job transition. For decades their work had spoken for itself, making networking with strangers unnecessary, but suddenly that neglected skill is being called to the forefront. That is incredibly uncomfortable to those who have enjoyed decades of success doing their actual job responsibilities.

I want everybody who feels shame and uncertainty about networking for interviews not to feel bad; they've simply never been formally trained. It's like feeling bad you're not good at playing the violin when you've never been given a violin or trained to play it. Everything you've been taught in terms of networking for interviews has been presented in the form of tips versus a recipe.

People are very good at following the instructions of a recipe, but there was nothing like that for my fellow Gen Xers or prior generations. It was all tips like “putting yourself out there.”

How do you recommend professionals in their 40’s and beyond (GenX and Boomers) approach hiring managers and decision makers who are in their 30’s?

If you pursue learning, you get job leads; if you pursue job leads, you get neither. This is a mistake more experienced job seekers make.

They feel like they need to show off what they know, which is not a likable thing. This junior person doesn’t know you. They might be

less experienced than you, but they're the one who has the job and an open role. Coming at them with all you know would make them wonder if you listen, take feedback, and are able to learn.

There’s also the element of ageism – a perception more experienced job seekers can't take feedback or learn new things. The best way to approach a stranger at a target employer is the same regardless of age (with only minor variations). In The 2-Hour Job Search I outline a 6Point Email for such outreach, and the only change I’d recommend to a more experienced professional when approaching someone junior to them is make it slightly less deferential. Instead of emphasizing the genre of knowledge you are trying to collect from the contact, you’d emphasize instead why your interest in their employer has been piqued and ask them to share their experience there with you.

I ask the more experienced professionals out there to not feel embarrassed or ashamed about not feeling comfortable with networking with strangers or younger people. You've never been formally trained to do this, and shame is a powerful barrier. It strikes your core.

When you're just starting your career, you're equally unqualified and unaware of how to network.

There comes a point when you become very qualified and very exceptional at what you do. In fact, experienced professionals find themselves in rooms where oftentimes, they are the smartest or most knowledgeable person.

searching and now you need to turn strangers into advocates to help you land interviews. You become a novice at outcomeoriented networking which is out of whack with your functional expertise.

As you grow in your career, you may have been able to insulate yourself from being wrong or where your expertise wasn't challenged often. You must embrace a growth mindset.

Networking is scary but it's not your fault. It is the fault of the systems that have brought you up and left you unprepared for advocacy building.

It’s ironic that a speech class might have been required curriculum in your college or grad school but not a class on listening skills, building advocacy, or negotiating. You need to do all these things at every stage of your life, more so than giving speeches. Today, it is all about the skill of delivering bite-size communication to get strangers to want to listen and interact with you.

If you have not been trained to do these things, now is the time to start learning.

What questions should people ask when they land informational interviews?

They should ask questions that are fun and flattering. An example of a question that is neither of those is “What is the corporate culture like at your firm?” You’re asking your contact to speak on behalf of their entire company, which is uncomfortable, and their answer will be a laundry list of positive traits that are tedious for them to list and not terribly interesting or helpful to you.

A fun and flattering way to ask that question is “What is your favorite part of the corporate culture at your firm?” This person is the expert on their own opinion of the company’s culture, so they can speak with 100% authority. They’re also likely to pick something that reflects well on them or makes them feel good.

More specifically, in The 2-Hour Job Search I outline an interview methodology called TIARA (for Trends, Insights, Advice, Resources, and Assignments) that help you systematically convert strangers into advocates by establishing likability, priming creativity, and requesting guidance in that order.

This approach maximizes your chance that this conversation leads to an interview. All your questions would be fun and flattering in this framework. Some Trend question examples would be something like “How has this job changed most since you started?” or “How do you predict this space will change most in the next five years?”

The 2HJS emphasizes reaching out to alumni. What modifications do you recommend if alumni connections are too far back in the rear-view mirror?

You are not necessarily going to reach out to people who went to your school. Job seekers can absolutely follow the 2HJS process with zero alumni connections and zero LinkedIn connections. I like approaching strangers for job search assistance because, unlike with alumni or former acquaintances, there’s a lower incidence of what I call obligate behavior where people feel they must respond to you to save face. If a total stranger responds to you, they are doing it out of the goodness of their heart. There’s no face they’re trying to save. They could have just ignored you.

I’m also a fan of networking with people who report to the person with the open position because they are great to ask where they think the industry and trends are heading. There is a big hang-up

about networking with more junior personnel because people feel like they should be selling themselves rather than requesting insight.

Reframe your approach by asking smart questions and get out of their way while they tell you why they're so good at their jobs.

Are there nuances between the obligation people who are in a prestigious, engaged alumni network feel versus those who are not? Should a person expect a lower response rate with this lack of obligation?

It is great to have a network of alumni but that doesn't make them Boosters [a small segment of contacts who will actively advocate for job seekers they like, but who comprise only about 10-20% of the population]. Non-alumni are much easier to work with since they have no incentive to be Obligates [a segment of contacts who want to appear helpful, but who don’t want to incur the risk and inconvenience necessary to be helpful.]. They are more clearly either Boosters or AUTHORITTI5.0 MAGAZINE

Curmudgeons [a segment of contacts who never respond to job seekers under any circumstances] since they have no sense of obligation to you via a shared school.

My goal is not to maximize overall response rate, but to maximize the response rate from Boosters, who are the specific segment of the population intrinsically motivated to be helpful to others who are job searching.

While you may get a higher response rate from alumni, you may not get a higher Booster response rate since alumni have a higher sense of obligation to respond even if they don't want to because they're a part of your ecosystem. This will result in falsepositive responses from people want to appear helpful but don’t want to suffer the risk or inconvenience to be helpful.

Obligates tend to do things like respond slowly or not at all after contact has been established, cancel meetings they set up with you on short notice, or postpone helping you into the future.

In my updated material in the new edition, I now recommend prioritizing functional job relevance over alumni connections when selecting contacts for outreach. The most predictably good informational meeting you can do is with a person doing the job or working in the area you want now or one day. You can really learn and gain insights from these people and you are more likely to build an advocate from that 30-minute investment of time.

What is a 6-Point Email and how is it different than a cover letter?

The 6-Point Email is a highefficiency prospecting message to quickly identify if a stranger is a Booster, Obligate, or Curmudgeon with six elements each designed to dismantle a reason why a Booster might not respond.

Curmudgeons never respond under any circumstances. Obligates respond out of sense of obligation and a desire to save face but who don't really want to be helpful.

These folks are dangerous because they give you a negative return on effort, whereas Curmudgeons who ignore you give you a zero return on effort. Curmudgeons, therefore, do you a favor by ignoring you! It’s the Obligates who can sap the energy out of job seekers quickly.

In my estimation, only 10-20% of the population are Boosters.

Therefore, you’ll have to kiss a lot of frogs to find your princes.

You recommend job seekers look for Advocates either one or two levels above what they are aiming for. Do you have additional tips for those seeking leadership level jobs when the opportunities are far fewer?

dots you weren't able to before, and develop your own hypothesis on the market. This will increase other people’s confidence in referring you to friends at other companies.

This is a learning-forward approach to job searching. If you are constantly chasing job postings you won’t be developing hypotheses and fueling your knowledge. Go ahead and set alerts for new online job postings that might be relevant and pursue those but spend your networking time focusing on what you enjoy learning about so you can get smarter faster.

I conducted a LinkedIn poll and most people wanted help with how to look past the obvious employer choices and how to get over feeling salesy when networking. What do you say?

I recommend picking up to three different topics you enjoy learning about. I think it's OK for a reactive search to include dissimilar mega corporations like Google, Facebook, and Amazon simply because they never stop hiring.

However, for a proactive search, I walk people through a very systematic company brainstorming process in the 2HJS. The first step of the brainstorming process is the dream employer method. Do a mental dump of all the dream employers that you wish were actively recruiting you. Then, brainstorm further by Googling or plugging information into Crunchbase, which is an investor database with a free use option to find a list of industries and related companies. It is my favorite tool to break the cycle of writer’s block.

Pitchbook is another tool.

This takes research and effort, but not very much – the forty minutes it takes to complete this brainstorm is included as part of the titular “two hours” in the 2HJS title.

Furthermore, the harder you must look to find an employer, the more flattered they are to hear from you.

You’ll get more traction in less time with smaller employers, and you’ll gain interest in and from companies you never even considered as options. This in turn will educate you on that space and help you gain traction with the larger employers, kicking off a virtuous cycle of momentum.

Some of my clients spent much of their career in business and technology consulting. They’ve worked on or led projects for upwards of fifteen or twenty industries. They have transferrable skills but don’t know where to start when it comes to aligning their talent with companies of interest. It feels open and vast. Any recommendations on how to start?

My favorite piece of intellectual capital I’ve worked on since the pandemic hit is a tool called “How Your Talents Add Value” (HYTAV).

People know about StrengthsFinder, but few know what to do with it. I cover both StrengthsFinder and HYTAV in the first chapter of The Job Closer.

There are just four buckets of work employers want from you, regardless of sector or role: they want you to solve tough problems, lead, collaborate, and get things done. If you look through job postings across any industry you AUTHORITTI5.0 MAGAZINE

will see those four themes come up again and again.

The HYTAV exercise helps people confidently, quickly, and unequivocally explain how their skills add value to an organization.

It helps explain your secret sauce for (for example) getting things done based on which two of your top five talent themes (identified using StrengthsFinder) you combine most frequently and prominently in service of that goal. This exercise helps job seekers go from someone who can go a level deeper than a cliché like “problem solver” or “leader” to someone who can describe how they uniquely and effectively have learned to solve problems and lead. This gives them a shocking amount of additional confidence and presence useful for cover letters, interviews, and beyond.

What advice would you give job seekers who have spent more than 25 years at one company when searching for a job outside that company? Do you believe the strategies from the book apply?

The one piece of advice I would give is to stay humble. No one can question their qualifications after 25 years, but their qualifications alone are not what's going to get them interviews or considered for new jobs. Rather, it's going to be the ability to turn strangers into advocates on an as-needed basis, which is a universal skill needed at every level – especially for experienced professionals with a long tenure at one company.

While their network is big within that company, they now need to build one outside of it. This is where

the universal life skill of conversing with strangers comes into play that I wish was taught in school.

Recognize this is a unique skill set you've never been trained to do but you must do it. Liking it is completely optional; doing it is not!

Take on learning this skill as a new challenge because few people bother to learn it. Therefore, it’s a very effective way to show an organization you continue to have the fire to get better every day.

One trap more experienced job seekers fall into is to assume that because they have turned new colleagues on their past teams into allies it means they are proficient networkers. However, there is a nuance to developing relationships and gaining the attention of a stranger, and that is the area of networking that 2HJS focuses very heavily on.

Many people don't do it well, but when you do, you stand out. As for being a continuous learner, some of my clients will take a class or get a certification to help them stay energized, relevant, and have something to talk about. If someone has spent their career at one place, how do they overcome the perception from potential employers they are a one-trick pony and cannot adapt to a new company or environment?

Conduct informational interviews using a learning lens rather than a sales lens. The recipe for preparing for informational interviews can be found in the TIARA framework in the 2HJS. Show you aren’t a one trick pony by demonstrating you use people’s time wisely, prepare good questions, and get out of their

way while they answer. Listen, because when you're speaking, you're not learning anything. It goes back to humility. It’s tough when you've been successful for many years at a company to suddenly put on a learner’s hat, but because of that difficulty, it’s a very effective way to build advocacy with strangers.

Listening is a skill! In the interview skills and talent selection training I do for Talence Group, we train hiring managers if you are speaking more than 20% of the time, you will be unable to assess a candidate’s skills. You should be listening 80% of the time.

It is devastating to your ability to improve your listening skills if you speak more than you listen.

I think some older job seekers would like to hear you don’t need to resort to Facebook and Twitter to have a successful job search.

There will always be one success story that is repeated at nauseam about how someone used a new technology successfully. Then thousands of people try to mimic that success, but it doesn’t work because it was at heart a gimmick. I don't do gimmicks. I do predictable recipes.

Why fruitlessly seek out the next gimmick when you could be reaching out to people systematically and learning, which is a timeless skill that never goes out of style. It is much better time spent. I like using technology people are already finding helpful.

I regularly get pushback about insisting on a minimum of forty employers in a LAMP list because people would tell me they already knew the five they would approach, but they weren’t questioning their assumptions. Had they tried to come up with more than five?

I am an expert at the three or four operations within LinkedIn that are critical for job seekers. You just need to know what you need to know so you can get the job done.

LinkedIn is absolutely a must for more experienced job seekers, though. Don’t spend time trying to make flavor-of-the-month technology work. I’m anti any investment of effort as a job seeker in being “found” because the data doesn’t support this as being a good use of time. A quick way to make, for example, TikTok not fun is to try to make it part of your job search. It will deplete rather than restore your energy. Energy management is so important to the job search process.

How do 2HJS users start with data and finish with intuition?

What does this mean?

Start with data and finish with intuition means to allow data to suggest to you who your top employment targets should be before factoring in your intuition.

Before you spend dozens of hours networking, spend one hour

creating a LAMP list (a List of employers, Advocacy, Motivation, and Postings). I outline this tool in the 2HJS to systematically brainstorm and prioritize employers prior to starting any networking activity. You can decide which organizations to target based on available data. A LAMP list takes just 70 minutes to create, or just 30 minutes of effort beyond the employer brainstorm we discussed earlier. Thus, it’s just a drop in the bucket timewise, but it is very tempting to go with your gut and nothing else. However, getting anchored by data first and overruling data with intuition is much more effective than an intuition-only approach.

Part of my frustration that led to the LAMP list was observing people come up with five or ten obvious companies in a handful of minutes.

The LAMP list is a list of forty employers plus three pieces of data which are easy to find and predictive of success. These data points give you an initial order of attack and counteracts artificial desperation or feeling like your universe is much smaller than it is.

What I find is when you must come up with forty, you must prioritize what's most important to you. Is it company brand name, location, sector, industry, product line?

Perfection is an unrealistic expectation in almost any activity, so this exercise helps you identify what you are willing to concede first (and second, and third, and so on).

The data will tell you which of your targets the data thinks should be in the top six. Then, you use intuition to overrule the data as desired.

When you start with data, you can use your intuition to make educated trade-offs between what the heart wants and what the eyes see.

For example, what if the company you really want isn’t actively hiring for the type of job you want right now? Would you rather spend your finite amount of time, effort, and pain tolerance working towards a company you like slightly less but is actively advertising for the job you want over your dream employer who isn’t openly hiring now? There is no correct answer there; that is where the job seeker’s intuition about what motivates them come into play.

LAMP enables you to make informed decisions about which ones to spend hours networking with and which ones can wait a few weeks. Let data guide your initial perceptions of who you should be contacting first but then use your AUTHORITTI5.0 MAGAZINE

finite amount of time and pain tolerance on are the ones that you are most likely to be able to sustain an effort sufficiently long to be successful.

What are the top excuses or areas resistance you encounter when it comes to using the 2HJS process?

There are three main areas.

The first is, as we discussed earlier, why do I need to come up with a list of 40 employers if I know the five or ten I want to work for?

Everything I talk about in my book is grounded in data, but this one is anecdotal based on thousands of iterations and working with job seekers. Those who start with fewer than forty simply aren’t successful. They don’t realize the employers are the commodity, not you, of which there is only one in the entire world. Furthermore, a shortcut taken this early in the process means inevitably other shortcuts will be taken later in the process.

Thankfully, you won’t need to network with 40 employers – the vast majority of 2HJS users don’t need to network with more than ten before they find success. However, the simple act of identifying your alternatives make people more effective at approaching their favorites with an air of confidence rather than need.

The second pushback I get is how could this method be a one size fits all if I am twenty-five years into my career. Just because this works for an undergrad doesn’t negate the usefulness for an experienced job seeker. It’s the same skill set everybody needs but has never been taught – the ability to turn strangers into advocates on demand. It’s the least bad alternative available per hour invested. I can’t think of a better use of time than following a 2HJS in terms of predictable return and how it steadily improves your odds over time.

The third pushback is deprioritizing online job postings, as in “I’d like to start networking, but I've got to apply to this job posting because I don't want it to go away, and I might not get a chance to apply later.”

My answer to this is look at your success rate today. If you are hearing back from 5% or more by applying online, go ahead and apply. If not, though, why be in such a rush to toss your resume into a black hole when you know you won’t hear back?

Exceptions are made for referral candidates all the time. Outside the government space, there is no “ticking time bomb” scenario, where a referral candidate would have been interviewed had they only formally applied online before the posting was taken down but now simply can’t be considered because the company prefers reviewing strangers’ resumes to candidates people already within the organization vouch for.

Furthermore, when you are referred by an internal employee, you have a better shot at getting considered and put forth a better application with the information you gather. If you try to network with two different people over the course of a week (in 2HJS I teach an outreach process called the 3B7 Routine which maximizes outreach efficiency) and you don’t get traction, then go ahead and apply. Don’t postpone networking to apply for a job. There is no excuse not to network.

What would you say to the long-time job seeker who isn’t using a system to track their work?

If a job seeker wants a personal trainer-style approach where someone gives you exact instructions and takes all the decision anxiety out of your search, I can give you exact instructions for conducting a more productive and effective job search. But you've got to follow it exactly. You can also lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink. Sometimes they must be “thirstier” before they are open to changing their approach, which can be a painful process.

I'm not going to try to help you perfect your resume if it's already good enough; there are simply bigger fish to fry.

I believe in an advocacy-based approach to job search, but not everybody is ready for it. If people are not willing to take a more precise approach, I wish them the best of luck and assure them I'll be here and available to help them if they're ready to try a more systematic approach. All I ask is for them to follow it through long enough to do 3 informationals. If they hate it, they can blame me and never use my system again, but most anyone who makes it that far finds they start to like it, especially compared to the alternative of chasing postings. It only takes two hours to get started and it’s both the best and only recipe-style solution I know.

If you are not sure what you want to do professionally, the modern classic Designing Your Life is the best precursor to the 2HJS. Thinking Fast and Slow provides a great overview of many of the behavioral psychology concepts I write about in my book.

Finally, Getting to Yes, to help people prepare for awkward conversations like asking for informationals, following up on requests, and when you need to advocate for yourself during salary negotiation. It is about treating people you negotiate with as partners and not advisories. I do a quick summary of Getting to Yes in The Job Closer’s chapter on negotiating, but it is such a great deep dive into a tricky subject. If these three books didn’t exist, writing my book would have been a lot harder.

What is next for you Steve?

After years birthing 2HJS and The Job Closer, I am experiencing both literal and mental vacations for the first time in what seems like an eternity. I enjoy managing the LinkedIn group and the community I’ve cultivated around the 2HJS and the questions help the recipe for the model and frameworks to get better. Down the road, I’d love to create a certification process for the 2HJS for coaches to add to their toolkit.

When I first started offering consulting services, I charged $100 to get a hour with me.

speaking, posting on LinkedIn, social media engagement, updating the website, ads, and so forth.

After all, I had plenty of time in my schedule. Plus that could turn into a client paying much, much more. Heck, I reasoned that $100 an hour was $200,000 a year, which would let me live like a star, since my expense base was a Toyota Camry and a 2 bedroom apartment in Dallas.

My true cost was 8-10 hours for that one hour consultation. So my time was effectively worth $10/hour.

No wonder my bank account was barren at the end of each month.

The consulting sessions would often go over, since clients were eager to ask questions and I was eager to answer. I was on a high after each session, since I knew the client was happy and that my advice was spot on.

At first I was afraid that people would mock me-- "how could an hour with Dennis possibly be worth $1,500?" And there were a few folks here and there who said this. To which you respond, "If we're not solving a problem that's worth at least $10,000, then you're right-- the Power Hour doesn't make sense." Or another good response for us to remember "I'm not right for everyone". Since after all, if nobody is declining your offer, your price must be too low.

But a couple weeks later, I'd not hear back from them. They had moved on to some other shiny object and needed reexplaining of the points we covered. This felt like pulling the scab off an already healed wound.

Some of these $100 clients would turn into $5,000 and $20,000 projects-- which also caused me to want to celebrate. You know the feeling. And it would make me want to bring in more $100 consultations with the thinking that if I kissed more frogs, I'd get more princes.

Yet after doing hundreds of these, I realized that I wasn't properly tracking my time. Sure, I made $100 during that one hour. But what about all the back and forth in social media, email, scheduling, sharing the recording, follow-up after the meeting, and the "one quick question" they had later? What about the marketing I had to do to generate these leads--

So I raised the price to $1,500 for my "Power Hour".

The $100 consulting call is almost as bad as the "let's hop on a free 15 minute call to see if we're a fit", which most consultants use. This can work if you can keep it just to a qualifying call and if you have a clear offer to sell them into-- usually at least $2,500 one-time or $1,000 a month.

I see a lot of experts out there who don't realize they can charge north of $500 an hour-- whether it's selling time or if it's your internally calculated rate from dividing how much time it takes for you to deliver versus the cost of your package.

Having a group coaching layer between the low ticket (book or lead magnet) and the high ticket (one-on-one private "VIP" access to you: if you have 20 people in the group, your effective rate is up to 20 times higher. Seems weird that people will pay as much to be in a group, but higher caliber clients are used to this.

Hiring one or multiple virtual assistants to handle everything except the coaching: think of it like you being the typical dentist who spends only 5 minutes with each patient, bouncing between rooms-- while the various dental assistants, dental hygienists, support staff, and front desk handle everything else.

Packaging up your offerings: So you're not selling an hour of your time (since all meetings seem to last an hour for some reason), but should be based on a result. The higher ticket sales are on the transformation you provide. And they'll actually pay more if you can do it in 1/3rd the time-- which would hurt you in an hourly or retainer model.

Publishing a book, evergreen webinar, or other thought leadership: But not because you want to reach more people. No, this is to DISQUALIFY the people who would otherwise try to get you on a call. People can't "pick your brain" for free, but you can freely share your knowledge in pre-recorded content. And you explicitly state on those landing pages, your criteria for successful clients-- before ever getting on a call.

Raising rates is one thing-- but this strategy shift to value and qualifying clients is how many of us have made it to the next stage-- to go from expert consultant doing one-off projects (each one different) to having a machine that operates for us.

The super successful coaches nearly all implement this standard 3 tier model-- to the point where I gasped that they must all be following the same playbook.

In Australia, around 3 out of 10 of us are avid podcast listeners which is why it makes total sense that one of the most popular client requests we get at Outsourcing Angel is “Can you help me start a podcast?"... So here's a step-by-step guide!

Step 1: What is your purpose?

Knowing your purpose and concept is the most critical step in getting started. Once you nail this, the next steps will come to you easily. Here are the key questions you should ask yourself: 1.Why do you want to start your podcast? is it to generate leads for your business? To position yourself as an industry leader?

2. What topics are you passionate about?

Think about a topic that you’re experienced in that you could talk about in length. You can then break this down into a list of segments and/or episodes.

3. Who is your Target Audience?

Can you create an avatar for your audience (e.g gender, age, demographic, interests?)

Doing this helps you understand how to build a dedicated audience by communicating specifically to this niche.

By asking yourself these questions, you will be able to have a clearer understanding of your podcast concept, end goal and who you want to cater to.

Step 2: Format & Schedule Podcast Format If you’re a true podcast fan, you’ll know that there are different podcast formats to choose from. In summary they are: Single host format: You’re the solo host and discuss topics on your own.

Co-host format: You have a co-host to bounce ideas and topics off each other.

VIRTUAL ASSISTANT

Interview format: You invite guests and ask them questions.

Roundtable format: You have a small group to discuss different topics and ideas.

Variety: You switch between formats for different episodes.

Whichever you choose, it’s important to be consistent with your format even if you alternate between 2 formats each week so that your audience knows what to expect.

Podcast Schedule Don’t make the mistake of releasing TOO MANY episodes! Most podcasts release episodes weekly and this is a great starting point for podcasts that are 40 to 60mins in length. If your shows are shorter, you could consider releasing episodes twice a week.

Step 3: Brand your show Branding your show is important for both visual and written content. These are the tasks that a Virtual Assistant (VA) can do for you after you’re clear on your purpose and target audience: Podcast artwork: A VA can design your podcast artwork for 3000 x 3000 but keep in mind that it will appear as 10x smaller in your podcast channels, so don’t over complicate it!

Landing page: If you have a website, a VA can create a landing page about your podcast with links to listen and subscribe.

Promo assets: When your assets are ready, your VA will be able to design promo assets to schedule across all social media and email platforms.

There are a load of LinkedIn Influencers and Trainers making predictions for the platform in 2022. LinkedIn Stories coming back differently, groups finally having a revamp and so on, but I believe one of the biggest trends in this marketing age will be the difference between winning and losing on this platform.

You see a massive trend that seems to be gaining more and more momentum is essentially spam or mass marketing through LinkedIn messages. A spray and pray approach and playing a numbers game, hoping something will eventually stick to the wall.

However, there are two main problems with this approach: Social media platforms like LinkedIn don’t like it and have placed restrictions on functionality to make this scattergun approach harder. For example, reducing outbound connection requests from 200 per day to 100 per week.

The second issue, which should be considered by marketers as the most important, is that this technique is becoming less and less effective. Those who are truly successful with their marketing are those who are slowing down their efforts which in turn is speeding up their results.

These clever marketers are understanding that it’s critical to infuse empathy into their marketing.

(And how not lose your soul when things are tough) Harvest seems like a strange thing to talk about during a time where the world seems to be in an economic, emotional and spiritual famine. When in famine - our natural inclination is to look for someone to save us from the pain. Maybe its your employer, a guru or someone you look up to. They can help. But the secret lies within you.

And if you choose to put your attention on what is within your control, you’ll find yourself less likely to feel indecisive and disorientated.

I’ve been through some personal ‘famines’ in my time. It felt like this hard time would never end. I went through anxiety to disorientation to despair, only to find the only way out was to find something within myself which would propel me to focus, be confident and take action on creating the income and emotional strength I needed.

I began to develop tools. I connected with something bigger than myself. After what I would call a long labor, I began to birth new ways to think.

What would YOU want your harvest to be this year? Is it a feeling? A financial, relationship or health goal? If everything in your life was working - what does that look like?

KEY #1 IF YOU CAN’T ‘LOCATE’ YOURSELF - NOONE ELSE WILL FIND YOU.

UNPLUG FROM THE FEAR NARRATIVE. DIGEST MORE ‘GOOD’ Poverty is the outward result of what you see, feel and listen to. Think of it like a radio frequency: What activities, media, places or people are triggering me to feel negative? If it doesn’t grow you - you don’t need to know.

What am I looking at or doing each day? Is it working for me?

Am I comparing myself negatively to others?

Have you ever been lost? No-one around to help.

The first emotion is panic. You look at the map, your brain locks. You imagine the worst.

Am I starting things and not finishing?

If you’ve been feeling emotionally, commercially or even spiritually disorientated - you’re not alone!

What places bring me a sense of feeling centred? Go there! Go again, and again!

KEY #2 BIRTHING IS PRECEDED BY PAIN, BUT WHEN THE BABY COMES IT’S BEAUTIFUL (but lets pray for a fast labor :) There is no birth without pain. The greatest breakthroughs I have experienced were preempted by a period of pain. In the labor, we can lose trust in our own dreams or judgment. But the hard times teach us. We ignite something within our spirit.

When was the last time you connected with something that inspired you?

If you’re experiencing pain - you are most likely birthing in your business or life. In the famine, you are processing and preparing for the birth.

When I had all my 3 kids, I was in labor for hours but then at the end, everything happened quickly. It was the pain that allowed me to contract and expand and deliver. The preparation can feel like a long time - but its getting you ready to deliver.

Act on what can now. I call it “Get the baby bag ready”. In a practical way, this might look like acting on future goals by building a marketing campaign, a sales process, or employing a new team member. You must trust that even if you don’t have all the answers - as you are diligent and faithful, you inevitably will see the outcome.

KEY #3 ALWAYS BE WILLING TO BE HEALED, AND PASS

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

ON THE PSYCHOLOGICAL BENEFIT TO YOUR CLIENTS OR TEAM Many of the thousands of high performers I have worked with suffer from ‘imposter syndrome’.In organisational consulting, I noticed that the more open the leader was to feedback and growth, the more successful they were. They are humble.

If you’re like this you most likely have an emotional benefit which others will buy. Most products and services offer a deep psychological element, even though it is not always obvious. Why do you go on holidays? To connect. To feel good. Why work with a coach?

To find something within yourself, to feel successful.

Healing precedes the harvest. When you bring healing to others they get Clarity! Clarity brings Growth. But it begins with you.

Who is the fairest of them all? What will the mirror reveal?

Ah, 2022! The year of mirrors. A “six” year.

Represented by the sacred symbol of the hexagon.

MANIFESTATION

Feminine and masculine qualities.

A year of personal development, opportunities, or challenges - you decide. The intention is to reframe. Get to know your layers, to create the foundations for your future self. So, when it’s time to reflect, there is no doubt who is the fairest of them all.

These are traits with duality. They carry both strengths and weaknesses. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is an opportunity to expand into what can be with peace, balance, and harmony. Understand and embrace your limitless possibilities.

Start by identifying your values. This will give you the foundation of acknowledging yourself, bringing all parts together.

The Hexagon is arguably the most powerful geometric shape in sacred geometry. It represents the potential for life from all sides.

The hexagon is the strongest shape known in building too. It’s a symbol found in many spiritual paths, eg. The Star of David, the Kabbalah, the Tree of Life, and the Hagall Rune.

To me, the six-sided shape depicts the mirror of the internal dialogues: Feminine and masculine, As above, so below.

From within to without.

If there was any year to really get to know your insides, this is it. The Six-year, the Year of the Hexagon.

Energy radiates. People will feel any vibration and intention before they even see you. Getting to know those deep recesses of the soul is an amazing attraction factor. Trends impact people's thinking, behavior, and wishes and thus of customers. Therefore, it would be negligent for every founder and entrepreneur not to be aware of trends. They have an overarching effect, and trends significantly influence the emergence and spread of innovations.

If you think one step further, you will also analyze what influence these trends have on your target customers' wishes, problems, and tasks. With the knowledge about the impact on customer behavior, desires, and problems, you can work out a value proposition, a customer added value, which your new product idea or business model offers.

Impact of trends Because trends and innovations work across industries, sectors, and countries, you can also take advantage of them, for example, to be active in two neighboring sectors. You can even set up a business model in a new industry or combine two industries. Here are some of many examples and upcoming opportunities: The merging of drugstores and pharmacies is one example.

Printing and scanning in one device are now also known to everyone. We can’t any longer imagine having to have two devices for this.

Trend analysis In the future, rapid, often radical change will require even more that you consciously invest in trends and future research and build up your own capacities for this. Only if you consciously deal with this topic can you shape the future yourself and profit with your company. The common motto is:

We all do it at one time or another.

Let's clear one thing up right away.

Procrastination is NOT about laziness or incompetence.

Nothing could be farther from the truth.

According to multiple experts who study it, procrastination is about parts of your brain battling for control and mood regulation.

Something about the task in front of you makes you feel boredom, anxiety, insecurity, frustration, resentment, or self-doubt and, because of that, you choose to do something else instead.

Ironically, then you feel even worse because you procrastinated, and you still have the task to do.

There are proven ways to combat this. When you know more about how your brain works, you can help it settle the conflict, commit to one action, and move forward. Here's what you need to know.

The Worrier The worrier is uncomfortable with risk, change, or making a mistake. If they don't start or finish a project, they can't be wrong and don't have to step out of their comfort zone. The worrier is busy thinking “what if" instead of thinking about what needs to get done.

The Crisis-maker The crisis-maker is addicted to the adrenaline rush of a deadline and tells themselves that they work best under pressure. So, this person waits until the last minute. And they may often successfully accomplish what they need to —by working extra-long hours and with a lot of stress.

As we know, stress is not good for you mentally or physically. If waiting until the last minute only affects you, that's bad enough. But typically, it also affects co-workers and even family.

Six Styles of Procrastination

The Defier

Procrastinators tend to fall into one of the six types below. When you understand which procrastination style or combination of styles you tend to follow, you can change how you think and act to anticipate and help yourself overcome your procrastination hurdles.

The defier is a rebel who doesn't like to follow the rules or conform to the expectations of others. Procrastinating puts them in control and lets them set the schedule. This behaviour can even get to the point of being passiveaggressive.

The Perfectionist

The Overdoer

The perfectionist pays too much attention to detail. So much so that they often can’t even start or finish a project.

The overdoer says ‘Yes’ to way too much overextending themselves beyond what is possible because they are people-pleasers and unable or unwilling to say "No." They are prime candidates for burnout. The overdoer can end up doing so much for other people that they end up procrastinating on what they need to do for themselves.

The Dreamer The dreamer is the opposite. They do not pay enough attention to detail. They may have lots of wonderful ideas of what they want to do, but

It is likely that an individual will exhibit multiple styles of procrastination and have attributes from several types or have different procrastination behaviours in different situations.

This Is What Procrastination Looks Like in Your Brain Procrastination actually has roots in your brain's biology. It’s the result of a battle between your brain’s limbic system and the prefrontal cortex.

Your limbic system is an ancient collection of structures located deep within the brain. The limbic system is the emotional part of your brain and processes your sense of smell, stores highly charged emotional memories, and affects all sleep and appetite cycles, moods, sexuality, and bonding. It’s also tightly connected to the brain's prefrontal cortex.

The frontal lobe of your brain is essentially your “humanness.” It is why we humans have the big foreheads that protrude out and our primate cousins don’t. The very front part of the frontal lobe, the prefrontal cortex, is newer and has evolved to function beyond the basic bodily, survival, and emotional concerns of the limbic system. Your higher cognitive and mental processes take place in the prefrontal cortex.

Your limbic system wants you to give your brain what feels good right now. Your prefrontal cortex wants you to behave intelligently and responsibly and attain your goals. In fact, procrastination can be looked at as a conflict between your present self and your future self.

Your brain has a natural tendency to prioritize and focus on short-term rewards.

Change Procrastination by Changing Your Habits

While it can be helpful to understand the types of procrastination and the science behind it, what would be even better is to quit shaming yourself for it and to give your prefrontal cortex a bit of help in overruling your limbic system.

Thanks to neuroplasticity, the ability of your brain to change physically and functionally, you can train your brain to establish new patterns and overcome procrastination.

Here are five simple practices that I find really brain-friendly and actionable, suggested by the article, Why we wait: the neuroscience of procrastination, you can start experimenting with today to power up your pre-frontal cortex.

1. Do the worst thing first. Putting off dreaded tasks will sap your mental energy while checking it off your list will make you feel more productive.

2. Create smaller chunks. Make the job smaller by defining tasks that feel more manageable.

Commit to only doing the first one and see how you feel afterwards.

3. Try the 10-minute trick. Set a timer and commit to working on the task for just ten minutes. Work as hard as you can during that time.

4. Work in public. Leverage the power of positive pressure by publicly committing to your goals. It can be as simple as telling a friend or posting a tweet.

5. Give yourself a reward. Pick something selfindulging that would make you happy as a carrot for your limbic system. That’s your gift to yourself should you work—even a little— one sub-item of the task you’ve been avoiding.

Mindfulness Can Help You Stop Procrastinating One of the best things you can do to stop procrastinating is to start practising mindfulness.

You may have heard of mindfulness but aren’t exactly sure what it is. Well, in recent decades, mindfulness has gone from being an “out there” fringe topic to becoming a mainstream scientifically validated concept. It’s now being utilized as a method of therapy, a tool to increase neuro agility, corporate well-being, and a way to improve everything from educational practices to weight loss to athletic performance.

When you look at mindfulness through a scientific lens, it is showing the practice to be a powerful mental health tool.

In terms of using your physical brain, mindfulness asks that you deliberately shift control of your thoughts and actions from your limbic system to the conscious awareness of your frontal lobe — exactly what you need to do to overcome procrastination.

Mindfulness Puts Your Prefrontal Cortex in Charge Remember we said above that your prefrontal cortex is highly connected to the limbic system?

By that, I mean that it is literally one synapse away from your limbic area, cortex, and brain stem. That’s important because it allows the prefrontal cortex to “talk to” and influence these other areas. In other words, it can insert higherlevel thinking and overrule the limbic system to help you beat procrastination.

You can practice mindfulness anywhere at any time. Very simply, mindfulness is a way of thinking. It’s being aware and being aware of your awareness. It’s training your brain to pay attention and focus and notice what’s happening as it’s happening. It’s learning to direct your attention to your present experience, including your mind, body, and environment. Repetitively and consistently thinking and behaving mindfully alters your brain’s form and function.

Your brain learns through rewards-based learning.

Mindfulness taps directly into the reward-based process to help us step out of habitual thinking patterns and behaviour.

In a sense, procrastination is a habit. The standard habit loop is trigger, behaviour, reward. For example, your brain is set up for survival: You see food, you eat food, and your stomach sends a dopamine signal to the brain letting it know what you ate and where you found it. The same cycle drives procrastination.

It’s set up as a habit loop. It just works the other way around in procrastination. For example, the project or task you need to complete is the trigger. The behaviour, mood, or feeling imposed by your limbic system is to avoid it because not doing it feels better right now. The reward is the relief you feel from not doing it. And a habit is formed. There's a lot of science showing that mindfulness can help us successfully change habit loops. To change a habit, you really have to change your brain and mindfulness does that.

According to Dr. Judson Brewer, Director of Research, and Innovation at Brown University's Mindfulness Center:

“Our brains are always looking for relative rewards.

If we have a habit loop around procrastination but we haven’t found a better reward, our brain is just going to keep doing it over and over until we give it something better to do.”

He suggests that you try to focus on positive feelings as a reward — a time when you did something similar, and it worked out alright or the benefits of getting it done early or how you will feel about yourself when it is completed.

Achieving what we set out to do depends highly on what actually gets done personally and professionally. As I trust you can now see, procrastinating does not need to be a permanent, never-ending way of going through life or operating. It is a habit you can have or intentionally choose to swap for one that is resourceful.

In a world that waits for no one, the question I’d like to ask you is: What habit do you choose to let go of to help your greatest asset serve you?

In addition, it has a simple and effective UI, plenty of organizational features, plenty of playback and download features, and a single-cost premium version. You can browse podcasts by category or search for them individually.

You can also set download rules, create playlists easily, and it supports both Chromecast and SONOS along with Android Auto and Wear OS. The UI and settings aren’t the most elegant things we’ve seen. However, the app makes up for it by hitting literally every other box we could think of.
