Editorial Apart from famous lions being shot for sport, the big topics on many minds at the moment are the dangers associated with increasingly technological vehicles. How we will cope with them, how our roads will handle them, how our sector will repair them and perhaps most importantly, how safe they are! We are increasingly aware of the risks associated with protection of data, but a new hacking video has raised even more concerns about future risks for drivers and other road users. Make sure you read both articles related to this topic and perhaps think twice about how much time your kid is spending eyeing the car and his computer. Enjoy the read! Clare

Rice husk tyres for China The Goodyear Tyre & Rubber Company has announced that it will be using silica derived from rice husk ash in consumer tyres destined for the Chinese market. The tyre maker has already tested rice husk ash silica over the past two years at its Innovation Centre in Akron, finding that the more sustainably derived material provides equal tyre performance to traditional sources. Chairman and CEO Richard Kramer commented: “Sustainability is a cornerstone of Goodyear’s innovation efforts. This new silica benefits the environment in many ways: It reduces waste going into landfills; it requires less energy to produce; and it helps make tyres more fuel efficient.”
Daimler AG has been awarded the coveted Steel Innovation Award 2015 in the category: “products made of steel”.
According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, in excess of 700 million tons of rice are harvested worldwide, making the disposal of the rice husks an environmental challenge. The husks are often burned to generate electricity and reduce the amount of waste shipped to landfills. While this ash has been converted to silica for several years, only recently has a process been initiated that creates a silica of a high enough grade to use in tyres.
The prestigious German Steel Federation award is bestowed every three years and this year honours the newly developed steel pistons for passenger car diesel engines, which boast significant CO2 savings and high performance potential.
Silica is used as a reinforcing agent in tyre tread compounds. Compared to carbon black, a traditional reinforcing agent for tyres, silica reduces rolling resistance, which in turn, improves fuel economy and can have a positive impact on a tyre’s traction on wet surfaces.
The automaker claims 2-4% lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for its first ever engines equipped with innovative steel pistons in conjunction with lightweight aluminium housings. The new high-tech steel piston celebrated its production car world premiere last September - in the V6 diesel engine of the Mercedes-Benz E 350 BlueTEC.
In addition to the agreement with Yihai, Goodyear is negotiating agreements with additional suppliers. Financial details of the agreements are not being released.
Merc / Daimler wins Steel Design Award
Daimler admits that the combination of aluminium housing and steel pistons might seem a problematic combination, due to the fact that steel expands less when heated than aluminium does. It does not conduct heat as well and is also heavier. However, it believes its designers have turned these apparent disadvantages into benefits, while completely redesigning the piston. For example, the low expansion of steel through rising operating temperatures ensures a growing interplay between piston and aluminium housing, and reduces friction by 40 to 50 percent. At the same time, the higher strength of steels allows for compact and lightweight pistons. Finally, the lower thermal conductivity of steel leads to increased component temperatures, thus improving the thermodynamic efficiency with higher ignition performance and reduced burn time.

VW wins award from Which? Volkswagen has been named ‘Best Car Manufacturer’ at the prestigious Which? Awards 2015 in the UK. The trophy was presented in London recently, at a ceremony which recognised and celebrated businesses that deliver excellent products and services across a wide range of sectors from cars to retailers and banks to home appliances. Which? is the largest independent consumer organisation in Europe. Volkswagen was shortlisted for the award earlier this year, and emerged as the ‘stand-out choice’ according to Which? in the final judging. The organisation commented: ‘All the cars from Volkswagen tested over the year are class-leaders. We have tested three new cars over the past year and all were Best Buys.’ Which? continued: ‘Volkswagen is a popular brand with owners, scoring well for customer satisfaction in our annual survey.’ Peter Vicary-Smith, Which? Group Chief Executive, added: ‘A Which? Award is our way of recognising the businesses that share our ideals and offer products and services that improve their customers’ lives.’ ‘Good businesses can truly be consumer champions. By treating customers fairly, businesses will be rewarded for their efforts with more confident consumers helping to drive growth in the economy.’
Toyota’s new crash tests dummies replicate pre-collision posture Toyota has developed new software for its crash test dummies that is able to replicate human pre-collision posture changes, to better test crash situations. These changes in posture - relaxed or braced - aren’t something physical crash test dummies could test in the past. The latest version of the automaker’s THUMS (Total Human Model for Safety) virtual human modelling replicates these kinds of pre-collision reactions, through the use of a muscle modelling feature that can simulate the body attitude of different vehicle occupants. This allows for more detailed computer analysis of the injures collisions can cause. This means the performance of seatbelts, airbags and other safety equipment can be studied more accurately, as well as more advanced pre-collision systems. The intelligence gained, Toyota says, will help in the development of new safety technologies that can provide better occupant protection. Toyota began development of THUMS in 1997, working with Toyota Central R&D Labs. Version 1 was launched in 2002, followed by Version 2 in 2004, which added face and bones to the model; Version 4 in 2006, with a precise brain model; and Version 4 in 2010, which gained detailed modelling of internal organs.

Jeep “hacking” experiment sees a 1.4 Million Vehicle recall Wired Magazine has recently thrown Chrysler into a tail spin. That’s thanks to the article and video it posted showing how hackers were able to digitally “hijack”a 2014 Cherokee model. The event continues debate in recent years over the safety of our increasingly techno savy cars. The video shows a driver (who willingly took part in the experiment) losing complete control of his car, as the hackers change radio station and volume, take control of windscreen wipers, air conditioning and even shut down the engine. Quite frankly, its scary to even watch from the comfort of my desk. “Immediately my accelerator stopped working. As I frantically pressed the pedal and watched the RPMs climb, the Jeep lost half its speed, then slowed to a crawl. This occurred just as I reached a long overpass, with no shoulder to offer an escape. The experiment had ceased to be fun.” The article continues: “Miller and Valasek have been sharing their research with Chrysler for nearly nine months, enabling the company to quietly release a patch ahead of the Black Hat conference. On July 16, owners of vehicles with the Uconnect feature were notified of the patch in a post on the automaker’s website that didn’t offer any details or acknowledge Miller and Valasek’s research. “Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has a program in place to continuously test vehicles systems to identify vulnerabilities and develop solutions,” reads a statement a Chrysler spokesperson sent to WIRED. “FCA is committed to providing customers with the latest software updates to secure vehicles against any potential vulnerability.”
PAGE 10
“Chrysler stated in a response to questions from Wired that it “appreciates” Miller and Valasek’s work. But the company also seemed weary of their decision to publish part of their exploit. “Under no circumstances does FCA condone or believe it’s appropriate to disclose ‘how-to information’ that would potentially encourage, or enable hackers to gain unauthorized and unlawful access to vehicle systems,” the company’s statement reads. “We appreciate the contributions of cybersecurity advocates to augment the industry’s understanding of potential vulnerabilities. However, we caution advocates that in the pursuit of improved public safety they not, in fact, compromise public safety.” Wired’s story add: “The two researchers say that even if their code makes it easier for malicious hackers to attack unpatched Jeeps, the release is nonetheless warranted because it allows their work to be proven through peer review. It also sends a message: Automakers need to be held accountable for their vehicles’ digital security. “If consumers don’t realize this is an issue, they should, and they should start complaining to carmakers,” Miller says. “This might be the kind of software bug most likely to kill someone.”” The contentious issue is also discussed in this issue on page 48. You can also read the original article on our webpage or view the video on our Facebook page.

New business support in Nelson Mandela Bay
Innovolve, a wholly owned commercialisation company of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) and Engeli Enterprise Development (EDD), a private sector business support company, recently unveiled a new initiative to support and develop businesses in Nelson Mandela Bay. Propella is described as having been “born from a need to establish an incubator to support and stimulate technology-based innovation companies”. The initiative’s primary focus are renewable energy generation, energy efficiency and related technologies and advanced manufacturing. It also aims to develop expertise in how to access finance, market access, business support and mentorship, human capital development and support in technology and innovation. Managing Director of EDD, Wayne Oosthuizen, commented: “Technologies and opportunities come and go according to product life cycles, but if a true entrepreneur can be developed, there is business longevity. We will focus on a model of incubate, accelerate and graduate”. Qualification for access to the initiative is determined through a rigorous selection process, and once attained allows the business the use of both Propella and its support services.
PAGE 12
These include the provision of offices, mini assembly/manufacturing areas, comprehensive ICT infrastructure, accounting services, secretarial services and technical business support. Funded by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) for the first three years of operation, Propella will also receive financial support from the NMMU, EED and local corporates, including General Motors South Africa (GMSA). Ian Nicholls, President and Managing Director of General Motors Sub-Saharan Africa Operations said: “We want to have more empowered local suppliers in place who are technically competent and competitive, and who are able to deliver in line with global requirements. This is particularly important for General Motors South Africa, as we have set our sights on progressively increasing our levels of localisation over the next 5 years.” “We are committed to developing local suppliers capable of manufacturing components of world class quality at globally competitive manufacturing prices. “Through Propella’s roll-out of strategic incubation and accelerative initiatives, local businesses will get the boost they need to be set up to succeed in the future.”

Dave Stalker receives SADFIA tribute The 2015 staging of Automechanika Johannesburg saw Dave Stalker, a South African automotive industry stalwart, honoured during the SA Diesel Fuel Injection Association (SADFIA) “Nuts and Bolts” conference. Hailed for his “dedication and commitment to maintaining the highest standards of quality in the diesel fuel injection industry” Stalker was presented a trophy by Chris le Roux, SADFIA National Chairman and Andy Roth, Desamark Chairman and owner of Diesel-Electric Rand. The latter highlighted Stalker’s “excellent work and ethic” during his time with Robert Bosch and Diesel-Electric. He added that Stalker’s retirement in May this year will see the diesel fuel injection and vehicle repair fraternity left with a void that will be difficult to fill.
Stalker is renowned in the industry for stressing the importance of continuous training and up skilling of technicians, to not only satisfy increasing customer demands, but also the rapid development of automotive technology.
Stalker’s employment history includes his role as General Manager Robert Bosch (Pty) Ltd, Workshop Manager DieselElectric, Lusaka, Zambia and Workshop Manager, DieselElectric. He held the title RBSA Technical Service Manager up until his retirement. During this time he trained numerous technicians and instilled his blend of crucial theoretical and practical knowledge into the Bosch Training Courses.
As vehicle owners pay a substantial amount for a modern vehicle, they expect a professional, efficient and comprehensive service from repair establishments. Stalker has highlighted that proper diagnostic equipment plays a key role in the modern workshop and will result in a lasting customer experience.
The Bosch diagnostic technician or other user training focuses on the operation of the Bosch Testing Equipment, while the technical training modules deal with the unit and vehicle system repair.
PAGE 14
The technological advancement of the modern motor vehicle is such that electronics currently make up 30% of a vehicle’s value with electronics now controlling mechanical systems, resulting in continuously complex emission systems.
Andy Roth commented: “I walked with him for nearly forty years and can only express my highest respect and admiration for Dave, who’s replacement will have to take big strides to follow in his footsteps.” Continued overleaf...
Dave Stalker (middle) with Andy Roth (left) and Chris Le Roux who commended him, at the 2015 Sadfia Nuts and Bolts conference, for his unselfish dedication, commitment and maintaining the highest standards of quality in the diesel fuel injection industry.

Face-to-face training is still, at this stage in South Africa, the best means to pass on skills and know-how gained from experience and years in an industry Other tributes included Ewald Faulstich’s praise: “Dave Stalker’s technical input within the automotive industry, especially in the diesel field, over the past 40 years has been outstanding and enormously valued by Bosch associates, our wholesale distributors and the Bosch Service network. His enthusiasm to offer an abundance of technical assistance based on his years of experience is irreplaceable and will be truly missed. Again, we thank Dave Stalker for his contributions within Bosch and extend best wishes to him and his family in his well-deserved retirement.” We contacted this SA industry icon, for his comments on the award and his plans for the future. Needless to say, although he officially retires in 2015, his valuable work will continue. “With regards the SADFIA tribute, it certainly came as a surprise and was most humbly accepted. I have worked with SADFIA for many years and found it a very good platform to hear a cross section of views from the various members. As a representative of Bosch at the time of my employment, one tends to be focused on your internal corporate strategies and and targets.” Stalker continues: “SADFIA provided a neutral forum where one could hear, discuss and debate issues affecting all the Diesel Injection workshops, franchised and independents. The corporates played a key role in SADFIA, and were always supportive when it came to sponsorships and advertising issues.” “Nonetheless, I would like to see the Fuel Injection workshops being the major decision makers and participants in SADFIA. I feel this would retain the neutrality of SADFIA and be in the overall interests of the industry as a whole. In the same vein, with Franchised Networks becoming stronger, SADFIA needs to seek new ideas to retain its presence and strengthen its benefits to members.”
PAGE 16
Stalker adds: “Recently, the Chairman, Chris Le Roux, introduced the “Nuts & Bolts” principle to bring in complementary industry guest speakers at conferences to broaden the information spectrum to members. This is a good start and needs to be expanded upon.” “Training was always an important subject for me, and I advocated the transfer of information as a means to improve skills, customer satisfaction and work quality. It is still a key need in the Diesel Fuel Injection Industry. The complexity of new High Pressure, electronically controlled systems ( such as Common Rail ) requires specialist know-how. On-line training will certainly improve and increase over time as it provides a good platform for base skills training at a relatively low cost. Some workshops have seen the on-line training as a means to provide training and avoid the costs which go with sending a technician to a training centre. However, face-to-face training is still, at this stage in South Africa, the best means to pass on skills and know-how gained from experience and years in an industry. It allows the technician the ability to interact with an experienced Trainer and extract information which many on-line systems do not yet cater for.” Stalker explains that for many sectors, training is in the process of changing to – or already changed to - “on-site” training. He believes however, that the central Training Centre will still feature in the Diesel Fuel Injection industry for some years to come, due to the complex training equipment needed. Despite this, he feels that decentralised training is essential to reach all workshops and ensure they are prepared for new technology. “This will be a challenge for both the Fuel Injection Corporates and Fuel Injection workshop, in order to contain costs, maintain a high level of competency in the workshop and thereby ensure customer satisfaction.” “The risk is always availability of technical staff during an onsite training session and the workshop will need to plan and set aside time to accommodate this, in order to ensure they benefit from on-site training.” Good luck Dave, we salute you for your invaluable commitment to the SA automotive industry!
Delegates at the 2013 Sadfia Nuts and Bolts conference were privileged in that Dave was guest presenter on behalf of Robert Bosch SA. The Midas Group also presented and was represented by Paul Barnardo, Peter Nell and Gerhard Braun (to Dave’s right). On Dave’s left are Chris Le Roux, Sadfia National Chairman, and Ewald Faulstich, Director Automotive Aftermarket South Africa.

There is always going to be appetite for quality, affordable entry-level models and our aim is to continue to provide choices to buyers who never thought they could own a new car,” says Des Fenner, General Manager of Datsun South Africa. “It is no surprise that these cars are attractive to a new generation of drivers and we want to ensure the successes we have seen in India, where demand for entrylevel cars continues to rise, are replicated here in Africa.” Over 60 Datsun dealerships exist within the Nissan dealer framework with a mix of dedicated and common showroom configurations. “We would like to see even more dealerships by the end of the year and these recent results certainly indicate we are on track to reach 100 dealerships soon.” The GO enjoys the full product and service support expected from a renowned motoring brand, and later this month will see the introduction of a driver’s side airbag on the Lux model. “We are continuing to innovate, but want to ensure we do not push prices beyond the reach of consumers.”
- Grant West
Datsun South Africa announced further innovation plans to roll out a unique driving simulator teaching model, aimed at improving driver skills by allowing learner drivers get used to the responsibility of controlling a car, but without the associated anxiety. The auto brand says this move highlights the importance of social responsibility and awareness on the roads and brings learner drivers one step closer to personal mobility and independence with the GO model. “In order to improve safety on our roads, it’s crucial to improve driver understanding of traffic rules and facilitate the learning experience with an affordable learning programme,” adds Fenner. “We will make this achievable with our GO SIM driving simulator, which will soon be available at 10 of our leading Datsun dealers, situated in Gauteng, Cape Town, Bloemfontein and Durban. After a 3 month test market at these dealers, we plan to roll this out to all our 65 Datsun dealers countywide.” One of the most intimidating experiences endured by learner drivers is taking to the road in a car for the first time. Coordination of hands, eyes and feet is challenging enough, but there is still the behaviour of every other motorist on the road to contend with. All these elements have been reviewed by Datsun, who have partnered with SIM U TEACH, based in Bloemfontein, to bring the learning experience into the 21st century. The simulator is equipped with the GO’s modern dashboard and control layout. The new driver must work his or her way through the strict K53 syllabus in various simulations of weather and landscapes until the activities become second nature or ‘automated’. Training includes clutch control, steering, gear changing, lane changing, intersection right turn, left turn and going straight, and roundabout first, second and third exit. Throughout the training, a scientifically certified technique is used to measure task automation to assess how comfortable the student feels driving a car. The Virtual Instructor (VI) gives detailed feedback on errors and observes student behaviour continuously, while the Student Assessment System (SAS) provides comprehensive analyses of student progress and strengths and weaknesses. “Datsun has always had a holistic approach to driver safety,” explains Vincent Cobee, Global Head of Datsun, at the introduction to the media. “Though our cars are resilient and easy to manoeuvre, we also recognise the need for affordable, first-rate driver training, because well-trained drivers are safe drivers. Building the confidence of new drivers, getting them familiar with a vehicle and our roads is the best way to achieve a safer environment for all road users. We can now assist young South Africans to become better-skilled drivers with certified credentials, allowing them safe access to freedom and independence.”

TSAM move to CKD results in more local suppliers and jobs - Roy Cokayne
More than 165 new jobs have been created in the automotive component supplier chain by Toyota South Africa Motors increasing the localisation of parts in its Quantum/Ses’fikile mini bus taxi vehicle. This comes with the transition from semi knocked down (SKD) to completely knocked down (CKD) production of the vehicle at its plant in Prospecton. In excess of 400 new jobs were created by the more than R550 million investment by Toyota in its new CKD plant. Bruce Avern Taplin, Vice President for Quantum at TSAM, said increasing the localisation of parts in the model resulted in Toyota engaging the services of 25 SA suppliers, who together supplied an additional 61 parts to the vehicle. These included seats, glass, wire harnesses, batteries, roof linings, instrument panels, exhausts and starters. Taplin said the suppliers invested a total of R95 million in their own facilities. “It is also our intention to further increase the local content at a later stage.” Johan van Zyl, the CE of Toyota Europe and Africa region, said the investment in the plant included R24 million with suppliers for the development of parts and tooling and R74 million by Toyota in the first phase of the project to assemble Quantum/ Ses’fikile models on a SKD basis. He was speaking at the official opening of the plant, which now employs 300 people and produces one mini bus every 20 minutes. Van Zyl said SA was a very important market to Toyota globally in terms of supply to the rest of the world and it served as a gateway to the African continent. Taplin said with SKD assembly, the body of the vehicle was imported to SA fully assembled and painted, with many other parts partially assembled. The transition to CKD involved the importation of the body panels, which were then welded together in the plant, painted and assembled to the fitting parts. To achieve this, TSAM need to construct a new facility and had chosen to increase the number of local parts it used. He added the change from SKD to CKD production and the manual nature of the plant operation resulted in the creation of an additional 260 jobs, with 45% of the new recruits young people. This required a very comprehensive R11 Million training programme. Rob Davies, DTI Minister, said the official opening of the plant was taking place at a time when, contrary to what might be read in some newspapers, foreign direct investment across a range of manufacturing sectors continued to be very buoyant.
PAGE 22
“In the automotive sector alone, our industrial policies have supported investments of about R24.5 billion in the period since the launch of the APDP in January 2013 and they [the auto sector] are confidently anticipating that there will be a number of further investments in this sector in the near future.” Davies said the event marked the restoration of CKD manufacturing in the mini bus tax vehicle sector, after a lull in the period from 2004 to 2011. He said Government, in consultation with industry and labour, agreed on a transitional arrangement in which SKD manufacturing would be supported under the APDP - on condition that this was a transitional arrangement and that there would be a movement towards CKD manufacturing by the target date of April 30 this year. “This target has been met by Toyota.” Davies said the CKD programme provides the opportunity for much deeper levels of manufacturing, many more jobs were created and there were also many more opportunities for local supplier development. The Minister added that in 2012 his department established the people’s carriers automotive investment scheme (P-AIS) as a sub component of the AIS in the APDP. He said this incentive was designed to grow and develop the sector in the area of transport vehicle manufacturing and provided a non taxable cash grant of between 20 and 35% of the value of qualifying investments in productive assets approved by the department. Davies said this scheme has resulted in support for three mini bus assembly projects, with Toyota’s project by far the biggest, involving a total investment of R158 million and supporting 680 direct jobs. He declined to identify the other two recipient manufacturers. Davies said this particular project was also conceived within the framework of the Africa taxi programme, with a view to producing vehicles that would find a market not only in SA, but also elsewhere on the African continent. Dave Finch, Senior VP manufacturing group at TSAM, said the design of the plant was set up for 9 600 units a year, but Toyota was looking at trying to increase the capacity of the plant to meet demand. It is considering exporting its locally produced Quantum/Ses’fikile mini bus taxi vehicles to markets on the African continent. Van Zyl said the first phase of the project was to just look at the local domestic market, although it was currently already supplying the model to markets such as Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland, and Lesotho. Van Zyl added that as progress was made with trade agreements in Africa, TSAM would then progress with CKD exports of this model to those markets as well.

Autonomous driving: Insights for the repairer
- Andrew Marsh
Much is written about autonomous driving, with a full range of ‘research’ to suggest it will be anywhere from universal to universally shunned. Meanwhile the technology from vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers marches on. Make no mistake, the next step is coming. Just consider the progress to date with these milestones: 2002 – The first adaptive cruise control systems reach the market as expensive accessories on expensive cars. This used a RADAR ‘lens’ technology first developed for military applications during the 1990s.
A typical ‘state of the art’ system currently looks like this:
2008 – Volvo offer the first autonomous braking system which combines RADAR, LIDAR and CMOS camera on the XC60. Other manufacturers such as Toyota and Honda follow almost simultaneously. 2011 – Subaru offer the first twin CMOS camera system, so eliminating the LIDAR sensor. This has been rolled out from the Japanese market to North America and now, in 2015, Europe. 2011 – Ford are first to offer RADAR, LIDAR and CMOS camera system as a low cost option on Focus3 (C346) and rolled this out to Galaxy / S-Max (CD340) as well as Mondeo (CD345). 2012 – Volkswagen introduce a LIDAR and CMOS camera low cost system for Up! / Mii / Citigo.
© Mazda Europe GmbH
The next big step? Autonomous vehicles. That is to say the occupants get into the vehicle, set the destination and do nothing at all to drive the vehicle. In February 2015 we gained an important insight to how this might really happen by 2017….Volvo Car intend to give 100 prototype vehicles equipped with production ready systems and let them be driven in and around Gothenburg on public roads, by 2017. The system has a complete 360 degree coverage of the vehicle.
2012 – Toyota and Honda show autonomous braking systems with the capability to manoeuvre the vehicle to avoid collision. 2012 – Mazda6 introduces a forward RADAR module made by Denso, with range increased from 151m to 205m. Other Tier 1 suppliers like Delphi, Continental and TRW follow suit in the same year. 2013 – Volvo announce the next major upgrade to its system to differentiate cyclists from pedestrians. 2014 – Volvo and more introduce production autonomous braking systems with the ability to capability to manoeuvre the vehicle to avoid collision.
In all cases many other vehicle manufacturers have introduced systems around the same time or shortly after each of these major steps. In between the systems have gained improved sensor performance and improved software updates - whilst the system cost has fallen as production volume take up has soared. So far all of these systems rely on a driver being at the wheel, and are strictly driver aids to ensure that if there is an apparent lapse in concentration the vehicle can mitigate or even avoid the collision. In spite of the huge progress in system integrity as well as dramatically reduced system costs, these are not 100 percent fool proof.
PAGE 24
© Volvo Car AB Let’s look deeper into this. The first level is optical, with four clusters of CMOS cameras covering the front, side and rear of the vehicle – much as can be ordered today from some manufactures. The difference is the three on board processing computers can decide what is going on if one of the cameras is obscured by excess sun light, for example. In addition the forward facing camera suite uses not one but hree cameras to increase data acquisition and provide range measurement too.
© Volvo Car AB
Next up is a suite of ultra-sonic sensors which provide short range detection of potential obstacles. Not new, but these are fully integrated into all the other sensor data.
© Volvo Car AB There are four RADAR modules, one mounted on each corner of the vehicle – this is twice the number previously used in ‘state of the art’ systems. The modules operate at 24 GHz, providing a wide angle of sensing with not so much range. Once again the RADAR modules are fully integrated into the overall data system – so detection from the RADAR is cross referenced to the CMOS cameras to classify the object as well as calculate its trajectory relative to the vehicle. In addition there is a 76 GHz forward facing long range RADAR, with a CMOS camera built into it, with the additional function of being able to aim the whole module via an electric motor controlled linkage.
The key to this system is a fully mapped road network, with better resolution than the 5m by 5m square possible with GPS. In addition there are two levels of back up – hence three computers processing the data, receiving data from outside the vehicle and broadcasting data too. There we can see directly the gap between the ream and the reality of autonomous driving. Mapped road data is available from many organisations (any guess as to why Google go into this area of technology?). The issues the collective pioneers are struggling with are: • Who is in control of an autonomous vehicle? It is naive to think a person sitting near controls could resume control as a potential accident unfolds. Essentially the system has to deliver 0 per cent error rate, and that requires much better road data than is globally available right now. • How can the system mitigate accidents in real time? By taking in as much data about the surrounding traffic and the location as possible. That in turns forces Volvo to develop its own road map system, for the moment. • Who owns the risk? The motor insurance sector have been bombarded with all sorts of scare stories and been shown many innovative active safety systems by many vehicle manufacturers. Yet, to date, not one has formed any sort of objective policy on how to deal with the subject. The Volvo system will park the vehicle safely once it reaches the limit of the map system, if the driver has not resumed control. This gives another indication about why so much specific road data is required. So - what’s in this for us?
© Volvo Car AB
The next part is really new. A single LIDAR module which contains multiple LIDAR sensors. This sensor is key to the overall system performance – to gather as much detail about the road ahead as possible. Whereas the LIDAR sensors today are fixed behind the windscreen, this module is right at the front of the vehicle:

For repairers and even insurers, being outside the data stream from the vehicle means that they will only receive information about accidents if one or more of the partners inside the data stream permits it. This is already underway with connectivity, where Wi-Fi is used as the headline for new car customers whereas the real point is to connect the vehicle to the franchised repair network. It’s not wrong – it’s simply a rapidly developing fact of life. This trend is already more than a decade old and is finally reaching mass market traction. Fully autonomous vehicles will happen, and they will be exposed because in spite of all the systems on board the cars will interact with vehicles driven by humans. So accidents will continue to happen until we have 100 percent coverage and 100 percent agreement on how those systems should be operated. Finally, it shows that as exciting the future is stability in technology is unlikely much before 2030. In between, we will all see the most amazing show on earth, as competing technologies slug it out for supremacy. Hence Google, Microsoft and Apple getting into vehicles. It means more than ever we need to keep up with each development, learn how the systems work and never assume anything has remained unchanged within a vehicle manufacturer’s product range year on year. We have to invest our time to capitalise on being the professionals to bring damaged vehicles back from the dead.

J.D. Power US IQS highlights Korean power According to the latest J.D. Power 2015 US Initial Quality Study (IQS) in the US, Korean brands are performing better than ever, while Japanese makes collectively fall below industry average for the first time in 29 years. The study – which examines problems experienced by vehicle owners during the first 90 days of ownership - found that Korean brands lead the industry in initial quality in the United States by the widest margin ever - averaging 90 PP100, which is an 11 PP100 improvement from 2014. Initial quality is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score reflecting higher quality.
“Smartphones have set high consumer expectations of how well technology should work, and automakers are struggling to match that success in their new vehicles,” said Stephens. “However, we are seeing some OEMs make important improvements along the way. What’s clear is that they can’t afford to wait for the next generation of models to launch before making important updates to these systems.”
Overall, the industry showed a 3% year-over-year improvement in initial quality, averaging 112 PP100 compared with 116 PP100 in 2014.
Porsche ranked highest in initial quality for a third consecutive year, posting a score of 80 PP100. With a 20 PP100 improvement from 2014, Kia follows Porsche in the rankings at 86 PP100. This marks the first time in the history of the study that Kia has led all non-premium makes in initial quality.
The research also found that European brands (113 PP100) have surpassed Japanese brands (114 PP100), while American brands (114 PP100) equal the Japanese for only a second time. Although Japanese brands overall experience a 2 PP100 improvement from 2014, this has proven insufficient to keep pace with the industry, causing Japanese makes overall to fall below industry average for the first time in the 29-year history of the US Initial Quality Study. Only four of the 10 Japanese brands included in the study post an improvement. “This is a clear shift in the quality landscape,” said Renee Stephens, Vice President of US automotive quality at J.D. Power. “For so long, Japanese brands have been viewed by many as the gold standard in vehicle quality. While the Japanese automakers continue to make improvements, we’re seeing other brands, most notably Korean makes, really accelerating the rate of improvement. Leading companies are not only stepping up the pace of improvements on existing models, but are also working up front to launch vehicles with higher quality and more intuitive designs.” Top issues for consumers were found to include: • Entertainment and connectivity systems - these remain the most problem-prone area for a third consecutive year, with voice recognition and Bluetooth pairing continuing to top the problem list. • Voice Recognition systems - the majority of models included in the study that have voice recognition systems experience 10 or more PP100 related to this feature. The number of owners who indicate having voice recognition in their new vehicle has increased to 67% in 2015 from 57% in 2013. Based on results from the J.D. Power 2015 US Tech Choice Study, this will continue to increase as simple wireless device and near field communication are the top two entertainment/connectivity technologies consumers indicate wanting on their next vehicle.
PAGE 26
Jaguar (93 PP100), Hyundai (95 PP100) and Infiniti (97 PP100) round out the top five nameplates. Infiniti is one of the most improved brands in the study, lowering its problem score by 31 PP100 from 2014. Model awards are spread among several corporations, with many receiving multiple awards: • General Motors (4): Chevrolet Equinox (tie); Chevrolet Malibu; Chevrolet Silverado LD; and Chevrolet Spark; • Hyundai Motor Company (2): Hyundai Accent and Hyundai Tucson; • Kia Motors (2): Kia Sorento and Kia Soul; • Nissan Motor Company (4): Infiniti QX70; Infiniti QX80; Nissan Sentra; and Nissan Quest; • Volkswagen AG (4): Audi Q3; Porsche 911; Porsche Boxster; and Porsche Macan • BMW (3): BMW 2 Series; BMW 4 Series; and BMW 5 Series; • Toyota Motor Corporation (3): Lexus LS; Toyota Tacoma; and Toyota Sequoia; • Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (2): Chrysler 300 and Dodge Challenger; • Ford Motor Company (2): Ford Escape (tie) and Ford Super Duty; and • Mazda (1): Mazda MX-5 Miata. The 2015 US Initial Quality Study is based on responses from more than 84 000 purchasers and lessees of new 2015 modelyear vehicles in the US surveyed after 90 days of ownership. The study, now in its 29th year, is based on a 233-question battery organized into eight problem categories designed to provide manufacturers with information to facilitate the identification of problems and drive product improvement. The study was fielded between February and May 2015.

AutoTrader.co.za pushes into the new car shopping & trading space AutoTrader has announced the launch of a new offering on its online car marketplace, with the introduction of new cars to their previously used cars only format. AutoTrader CEO George Mienie comments: “Every year we invest heavily to make sure we understand our consumer’s changing needs. Our research shows that buyers spend up to 15 hours researching and shopping for a car online. Our goal is, and always has been, to cut that time investment to the bare minimum. With one in eight users now shopping for new cars, providing this option alongside our existing portfolio will give consumers a useful solution to their needs.” The brand has also added ‘comparative shopping’ technology, which allows the consumer to view up to four different makes and models side-by-side on any screen. What makes this comparative shopping tech unique is the ability for the consumers to compare different historical generations of cars. An all new content hub brings an unprecedented amount of buying and selling information direct to the consumer. “Our team has pushed for a truly comprehensive portal,” said Mienie.
PAGE 28
“Now our customers can not only search for a car from any device, anywhere, they can read car news and reviews, watch our expert video reviews, get comparative insurance quotes from up to five insurers instantly, and share content across social media platforms, all in one place. Car shopping has never been easier” AutoTrader points out that its website is fully mobile compliant and that it offers a ‘no barrier’ business model, which means elements such as registration forms and sign ups are not mandatory, so connecting with a dealer is as instant as a phone call or email. AutoTrader takes this “no barrier” model one step further by having integrated GPS and Google Maps tech. This means buyers are now able to choose their best buy, within any distance of their current location, and simply drive directly to the car dealer. AutoTrader terms this “walk-ins”. “Now that we have included new cars to our website, at any one time we have over 2 million buyers looking at over 65 000 cars on our site,” said Mienie. “Our upgrades have allowed us to connect buyers and sellers across this diverse marketplace in a far more direct way than ever before.”

Entering a new era as “Aftermarket Solutions”
- Warwick Robinson
In the leadup to the official opening celebration at Midas Group’s new premises, AutoForum met with Stefan Le Roux. The meeting was arranged to discuss the new shareholding in the group and the move to the new premises. The fact that Midas Group’s logo wasn’t outside the building, quickly became the first topic of conversation.
At the official opening of the new AS premises in Linbro Park which consolidates their previous 4 warehouses into a single, purpose designed facility. Warren Espinoza kicked off the formalities by discussing the reasons for the name change from Midas Group to AAAS along the same lines as our interview with Stefan Le Roux.
The name change comes just as the Imperial Group’s full shareholding came into effect on 1 July and Le Roux believes that the move is directly in line with the company’s past and future. “This group has historically been involved in changes that were formulated to meet the needs of our market. As our strategies to keep growing are developed and put into action, and as other companies are acquired, the shareholders view AS as the mechanism best suited to carry the business into the future both locally and internationally”.
He explained: “Confusion has existed between the franchise and holding company identities, and this was limiting in terms of growing the solutions which the group delivers”.
“The strategy behind the buyout of the remaining shareholding, held by Midas Group management since 2001, was to provide longevity to the business”. Imperial Group were evidently satisfied to allow management control of the business, and the sale of shares simultaneously allows the group to talk to other possible customers. “What a process!” Le Roux begins - “It is well understood that the group strategy was about more than just being a parts supplier, and we needed to move away from misperception and direct association with the “Orange & Black” of the Midas stores, which is only one part of our business”. After the conceptual direction was agreed on, the statutory legalities had to be observed, and so the executive team settled on a definitive and descriptive title that reflects the business - in terms of activity and where it is headed. Thus, Africa Automotive Aftermarket Solutions. “Just call us AS” says Le Roux.
PAGE 30
Espinoza labelled the wholly-owned Imperial shareholding, the new name and the new premises as the start of a completely new era for the group. He covered a few of the details surrounding the buildup to the move to Linbro park “AS secured the piece of land based on a complex process in which consultants mapped out an ideal position in terms of our customers, staff and logistical needs. Contrary to popular belief it had nothing to do with where I live” Espinoza joked at the event. “After securing the premises we set about designing the building, specifically to meet the needs of the 400 people involved in this company in order to make their work more efficient. Simultaneously, the architects needed to be kept happy - ’who wanted it to look good too!’.
Espinoza admitted “even though we did our level best to plan for every eventuality that a move during trading presents, handling the relocation was a lot tougher than we even anticipated. A big thank you to all our customers for their understanding and loyal support through the period”. “In all, this development has seen an investment of over R230 Million. I believe that it shows both Imperial Group and Aftermarket Solutions’ absolute commitment to our continued success and growth into the local and African aftermarkets” he concluded, before inviting guests to take a short tour of the warehouse. Espinoza gave a special mention to the team led by Malcolm Perrie, who spent time with the quantity surveyors and architects, all whilst still having to fulfill their usual roles, as well as the architectural team.

The new vehicle industry – a half year review
- Christo van Gemert
Vehicle sales in the first half of 2015 are reflective of a market that is under pressure. The latest sales data, from the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) shows that the new vehicle industry is down 1.9%, year-to-date. From the start of the year until the end of June, South African consumers and businesses had purchased a total of 302 619 new vehicles, spanning passenger cars; light commercial vehicles (LCVs); medium, heavy and extra heavy commercial vehicles; as well as buses. In contrast, sales in the first half of 2014 amounted to 308 422 new vehicles. While sales were relatively flat in the first three months of the year, the second quarter has seen three months of declining sales. June’s decline in sales is also the largest decline in 2015, so far. The sales breakdown by segment shows that the declines are almost universal, with only the LCV, heavy commercial vehicle, and bus segments in the positive. Year-to-date passenger car sales are down 3.2%. This is the largest segment, and declines here naturally represent a higher unit figure. Only 201 795 passenger cars were sold in the first half of this year, compared to 208 521 for the same period last year. Consumers’ budgets are under pressure from all angles. An increase in the international oil price and the depreciation of the rand has seen fuel prices rise sharply, with four increases in the last six months. Additionally, the exchange rate has also continued driving new vehicle price inflation, which continues to exceed CPI. These factors, and their knock-on effects, are eating into the disposable income of consumers. Household debt levels also remain at high levels. Combine this with low levels of disposable income and consumers are starting to see that their budgets cannot accommodate inflationary increases, resulting in negatively affected credit profiles and inability to acquire more credit.
PAGE 32
This is compounded by recently introduced amendments to the National Credit Act, which call on banks to have more prescriptive lending criteria, resulting in fewer approvals. LCV sales have fared better, seeing a 2% increase, year-to-date. However, LCV sales through the dealer channel – which accounts for sales to businesses and consumers – were down 2%, and declines in LCV sales were also seen in the rental and single sales markets. Growth here has come solely from strong sales to the government and its departments. Yearto-date, in June, LCV sales to the government were up 85.5% – representing 4 891 more LCVs sold to government compared to 2014. Declines in the commercial vehicle segment, which comprises buses, as well as medium, heavy, and extra heavy commercial vehicles, were attributed to prevailing economic conditions and business confidence levels. By the end of June total sales for this commercial vehicle segment were down 5%, year-to-date. The most recent business confidence index published by the RMB Bureau of Economic Research shows that business confidence levels are currently in the negative, as they have been for some time. Factors contributing to the negative sentiment in among businesses include fears around the electricity supply, fuel prices, and anticipated hikes in the interest rate. As a result, many are avoiding any capital expenditure. Businesses are choosing to hold onto their existing assets, focussing their transport spending on maintenance rather than replacements. This extension of replacement cycles has had a direct effect on vehicle sales.

KPMG - Business transformation is the key for manufacturers KPMG has released the results of its 2015 Global Manufacturing Outlook (GMO) survey, which found that 64% of the 386 senior executives who participated say sales growth is one of their top strategic priorities in the short-term. Despite this, many also see innovation as a critical path to growth – with researchers finding that two-thirds of manufacturers realise investing in breakthrough technologies is a “must do” long-term strategy. Indeed, 44% say they will allocate more than 20% of their total technology spend on systems to improve the pace and value of innovation (engineering, manufacturing and supply chain) in the next year. In addition, 32% cite the development of new products and R&D as a top strategic priority. Jeff Dobbs, KPMG’s Global Head of Industrial Manufacturing comments: “Innovation waits for no one. Those who fail to embrace the new reality of the accelerating innovation cycle will quickly be left behind. Investing more in R&D is certainly helpful, but manufacturers need to also focus on continuously enhancing and adapting their innovation models if they hope to survive.” In order to improve speed-to-market and lower innovation costs, the KPMG GMO survey found that manufacturers are increasingly looking to, and collaborating with, suppliers, customers and third party research organizations. Indeed, 81% of respondents are adopting more collaborative business models with suppliers and customers to improve the value of their innovation investments. Dobbs adds: “The focus on new product development, collaborative innovation and speed-to-market all require new strategies and business models. If manufacturers hope to grow by driving new innovations to market, they need to focus on improving the agility and integration of their supply chain models.” Looking into supply chains, almost half of all KPMG GMO survey respondents cite lowering costs and working capital levels as one of their top three strategic supply chain priorities. And, when asked to rate their top supply chain challenges, respondents say that a lack of flexibility and responsiveness to changes in demand or product mix is the most frequent issue; this is followed by concerns relating to supplier performance (in terms of risk, reliability and quality) and ensuring sufficient supplier capacity to meet demand and best support new product launches. “Our survey respondents report they are addressing the challenges by investing in new supply chain technologies that offer lower costs, better planning and improved enterprise collaboration,” says Dobbs. “More than a third of our GMO survey respondents say they will place significant investment into improving their procurement systems and 31% say they will allocate significant

supply chain technology spend on Integrated Business Planning (IBP) systems.” KPMG South Africa Industry Analyst, Ashleigh Raine-Botha says: “the South African manufacturing sector is primarily focused on cost reduction and streamlining of processes due to slow economic growth. The major threats facing the industry include the current electricity crisis (both cost and supply), which ultimately limits a manufacturers’ production capabilities and profitability, as well as regular strike action. Glimmers of hope include a recovery in the global economy, lower oil prices and a continued weakening of the exchange rate, which all bode well for the sector.” According to the latest Bureau for Economic Research (BER) South African Manufacturing Survey: “manufacturing business confidence declined to 30 index points in the first quarter of 2015. Not only was this 12 points below the level recorded in the fourth quarter of 2014, but it was also 4 index points below the average recorded during the whole of 2014 – which was regarded as a tough year for manufacturers. The decline in confidence was mirrored by the underlying indicators as demand slumped and production decelerated after a recovery in the previous quarter.” Gavin Maile, KPMG SA Industrial Manufacturing sector lead, is especially concerned regarding the state of manufacturing in South Africa. “With input costs (both raw materials, utilities and labour) increasing at a rate faster than price increases, many manufacturers are battling to remain profitable, whilst others are looking to move or scale down local operations.” He adds: “Manufacturing has the potential to create significant jobs which the country desperately needs.” He also notes that the KPMG Global Manufacturing Outlook survey found that 74% of respondents are willing to spend upwards of 4% of revenues on R&D over the next year – “this would simply be unaffordable in the current SA low growth environment.” Dobbs concludes: “Sensing and truly understanding unmet needs faster than the competition will be key to winning the battle as the pace of connected-product innovation continues to accelerate.” The full report is available at www.kpmg.com

Top issues that keep fleet managers up at night? According to Dr David Molapo, Head of Fleet Management at Standard Bank: “Fleet Managers grapple with a wide range of issues that lead to sleepless nights. Not only are their diverse operations exposed to outside risk, but they often have to juggle the needs of machines as well as humans in a dynamic, changing environment”. In light of this, his team interviewed SA fleet managers to find out what the major concerns are.
1. Rising costs
COMMERCIAL
While some fleet managers say their companies or industries have ways of absorbing the seemingly relentless rise in fuel costs, those who have strict cost-savings targets to meet, find that it is their biggest headache.
PAGE 36
Daylene Damons, Fleet Manager at the multinational JTI, says incremental fuel-saving through measures such as monitoring driving behaviour are no longer enough for the targets she is chasing. After careful test runs, her company has decided to move its fleet from petrol to diesel vehicles. They have proved to be much lighter on fuel, and the total cost of diesel vehicles over their lifespan, is cheaper. Shaun de la Peyre, National fFeet Manager at Lancet Laboratories, agrees that vehicle selection is key to keeping fuel consumption down. The trick is not to be blinded by the purchase price, but to look at the overall costs, including fuel consumption. This has helped him keep his 600-vehicle fleet’s average consumption at about 7.1 litres per 100km. Apart from getting the cost-per-kilometre down, Damons finds she has to look closely at cutting the number of kilometres, by curbing the private or unnecessary use of fleet vehicles. She is currently updating her company’s fleet policy - that’s the easy part, she says. Turning the policy into practice is going to be the hard part.
2. E-tolls A year and a half ago e-tolls did not exist as a problem for fleet managers. However, while many fleet managers have become accustomed to the costs, they do struggle with faulty bills.
JTI’s Damons says the monthly cap of R450 per vehicle is sometimes exceeded, and Sanral’s “pay now, argue later” principle in effect becomes a “pay now, write it off” scenario for the fleet manager. E-tags, the electronic device which automatically logs the vehicle’s passage through the toll-road gantries, sometimes don’t work. The vehicle is still billed by the tolling system, but it loses the discount extended to e-tag users, says Damons. De la Peyre says Lancet receives at least five bills per month in which the registration had been misread by the gantries. He finds these “almost impossible to resolve,” despite the fact that a colleague spends at least one day a week at Sanral’s offices. Mary-Ann Calvert, Fleet Manager at Masslift Africa, experiences the same billing problems, and has also found that sometimes vehicles disposed of - through sale on the second-hand market are not recorded/updated on the e-tolls billing system, and Masslift continues to be billed for the vehicles.
3. Accidents A startling number of fleet managers mention an increase in their accident rates as a rising challenge and mention deteriorating road conditions and increasing potholes as one of the underlying causes. “Pothole damage is becoming more prevalant. That is a challenge for us here in Gauteng. Sometimes it can be minor potholes, but the vehicles come back, you inspect them and you realise that they’re damaged,” says Anesh Kassen, BMW Group Fleet Operations Manager.
Calver from Masslift has had a similar experience. A year or two ago, their insurance service provider reviewed their premiums downward because of their low claims ratio. But in recent months she has had to process as many as seven claims. A number of them were caused by potholes, she says. She believes a recent increase in windscreen damage is also related to deteriorating roads. De la Peyre says potholes are “without a doubt” an increasing problem, especially in outlying areas. Strictly no mag wheels on any of his fleet’s vehicles, he says. Stock standard wheels help to minimise the repair bills.
4. Licensing, registration and speeding fines BMW’s Kassen, who runs a fleet of between 1 000 and 1 200 vehicles, says delays in the licencing and registration of vehicles have recently emerged as a challenge. In the past, the turnaround time was a day or two, but nowadays it can take several days. Because licensing and registration is a municipal function, the service levels vary from centre to centre, depending on where the vehicle has to be registered. The post office strike played havoc with the usual flow of speeding fines, says Lancet’s De la Peyre. Even today, months after the strike, the service is erratic, making the rerouting of fines to the drivers difficult.
5. Driver behaviour Bad driver behaviour is a pain point as old as fleet management itself, but could it be that the situation on South African roads has been particularly tense of late? This is a question that Calvert has been asking herself after some of her drivers had recently been involved in a couple of incidents.
Other fleet managers report that driver behaviour is just as bad, or as good, as always, but what has made a big difference to their work is the ability that telematics have given them to monitor driver behaviour. Speeding, harsh braking and excessive idling can now all be flagged through a system of exception reporting, and can be taken up immediately with the offending driver. It is perhaps an indication of the success of telematics that Damons mentions recent trouble she has had with a telematics service provider that took up to three weeks to fix faulty units. Because her fleet management system can no longer do without telematics, she has decided to move over to another service provider. De la Peyre acknowledges the role of telematics in the management of driver behaviour. Lancet was one of the pioneers of full telematics in South Africa. The challenge for fleet managers, however, is how to deal with the huge amount of data generated by such a system. He receives a helpful daily report from his telematics service provider, but he admits that it may be flagging only the most flagrant exceptions, and that many more abuses may be lying buried in the data.
6. Card Fraud Fuel card fraud is not at epidemic levels, say fleet managers, but it still requires vigilance. De la Peyre has experienced garages deliberately ringing up inflated totals. Standard Bank’s transaction authorisation system has helped, he says. It automatically declines any transaction that falls outside certain parameters, such as filling up more than the tank capacity, or filling up twice within a certain time frame.

MAN outlines future proofing programme MAN Truck & Bus has confirmed that it has begun the implementation of what it calls “its extensive programme for strengthening the business in the competitive environment”.
The “streamlining” will primarily be carried out through voluntary redundancies, semi-retirement and not re-filling positions should they become vacant.
A primary focus of the programme is realigning the production locations and streamlining administrative areas. The company believes that by the end of 2017, the future programme will have significantly overcompensated for the one-off expenditure necessary in 2015 – thanks to cost savings and profit optimisations.
The new system will see heavy series trucks assembled at the Munich and Krakow sites, while cab shells and painting will gradually be transferred to Munich.
It adds that the realignment of the production network of MAN Truck & Bus will reassign key responsibilities in coming years to individual truck production sites in Munich, Steyr, Krakow and Salzgitter – ensuring each has clear areas of responsibility and core competencies and avoiding duplication of work. The programme also involves streamlining its indirect areas such as staff – although it hastens to add that they do not foresee compulsory redundancies or site closures.
Spare parts/Logistics will be completely transferred from Munich to Salzgitter, which will also become a component and re-manufacturing plant. Bus/coach chassis manufacture will be relocated to Ankara. Steyr will remain the production centre for truck assembly in the lightweight and medium weight series, as well as for cab equipment in the corresponding model ranges. In future, cab shells will no longer be manufactured at the site, but rather supplied by Munich. At the same time, Steyr will see the creation of a new plastic painting plant and a truck modification centre.
TomTom’s fully navigable Trans-Africa highway network TomTom Africa has announced that it will support the largest road network project in African history - the TransAfrican Highway project. The project will create road-based trade corridors across Africa, effectively linking its biggest economies: Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt and Algeria, and which makes the recently launched Tripartite Free Trade Area (TFTA) a reality. The road network is expected to allow African countries particularly in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region to stimulate cross-border trade. “Africa covers an estimated 30 million square kilometres, which basically means that you could ‘fit’ China, Japan, USA, UK, Western Europe and Eastern Europe into our land mass,” says Etienne Louw, General Manager for TomTom Africa. “TomTom’s aim is to support initiatives such as the TransAfrican Highway project and the TFTA by providing accurate mapping data for our vast continent, thus facilitating economic growth. TomTom’s devices are already able to navigate commuters on a single map from Cape to Cairo which, in itself, is unique. However, this information needs to develop even further to support the future of intra-African trade. As another example, businesses willing to move goods across borders need accurate map data in order to route drivers and track their location and progress.”
PAGE 38
Louw explains that in order to capture additional mapping data, the company will rely on its unique mix of sources: extensive fieldwork - actual driving and exploration of various territories, data probes and a mixture of aerial and satellite photographs. “This is an important data collection exercise, because it will support individuals and companies needing to access accurate map data of the transcontinental network of roads supported by the African Development Bank.” The road infrastructure project is seen by economists as having the potential to facilitate the continent’s annual growth of 5%. TomTom believes that the project will offer exponential trade opportunities for a wide variety of businesses and wishes to add its contribution by completing this mapping project by the end of the year. Louw adds: “By opening Africa’s trade corridors, businesses can chase opportunities and mitigate risk through accurate routing of vehicles and tracking of goods, regardless of their location.”

Isuzu Truck SA buys KANU and ACT in Port Elizabeth - Grant West
Isuzu Truck South Africa COO, Craig Uven took the opportunity to announce the company’s 100% acquisition of both KANU Commercial Body Construction (Pty) Ltd and Automotive Chassis Technology (Pty) Ltd (ACT) ,whilst briefing members of the media during his winter commentary on the local truck market. Year-to-date the overall local truck market has seen a decrease of 5% over 2014, with the decline over the past 3 months a cause for concern – possibly pointing to the end of the growth cycle in this sector since 2009. Relevant to the status of the local market, Craig was pleased to announce an increase in market share to 13,3% on the back of a YTD volume increase of 20% on the same period in 2014. ITSA expects to achieve a production milestone of 30 000 units from its PE plant during the upcoming 3rd quarter of 2015. It is a firm believer that every Isuzu truck sold is a mini economic opportunity in itself - being a good revenue earner combined with efficient running costs. ITSA adopted a realistic approach to market expectations for the next 18 months in order to plan their assembly operations: “this is required if we are to preserve employment in a period where the economic pressures in our country continue to be a challenge on business and consumers,” says Uren.
In line with this, ITSA have embarked on the next phase of their Southern Africa growth strategy. “Our scope of business and work is no longer just focused on what leaves the factory gate and the current changes are moving ITSA from a typical commercial OEM to one of an enterprise type business that has the capacity to initiate and build products according to client specifications. Together with our dealers, we will have a more integrated relationship with existing and future customers in the life of our trucks in operation.” ITSA says it is adapting to be able to position itself to properly manage this new scope of business. Having said this, Uren announced that Isuzu Truck South Africa had acquired 100% shares of both the KANU body building business together with ACT (Automotive Chassis Technology) in Port Elizabeth. The transaction takes effect in August. Current Isuzu Plant Manager, Sipho Sandla, becomes General Manager of the KANU/ACT operation in PE. Previous owner, Tony Wright, will remain with the company in an advisory capacity for a minimum of 12 months to ensure a smooth transition. Uren congratulated Sandla, saying he had great expectations of growing and developing its business in collaboration with many other suppliers, as Isuzu Truck SA expands its strategy even further. South African ingenuity - a locally made engine “over-temperature” sensor. A South African invention is hoping to help prevent engine problems due to overheating at a price the average vehicle owner can afford. After having an engine blowout from a previous car and being lucky enough that it was still under warranty, Travis Duck designed and built a solution to prevent the problem occurring again. This unit provides an audible alarm to warn the driver when the engine is overheating. Duck explains that OEM sensors and visual warnings on most cars are not fast acting enough, nor do they have any audible warning system built into them. To make matters worse, a lot of current model cars do not have a temperature gauge at all, only a red light which comes on when it is too late to save the engine.
The new alarm system directly measures the temperature of the head at cooling water exit. Most OEM systems measure radiator water temperature via a plastic fitting (poor thermal conductor); if a radiator hose bursts there is no water to conduct temperature to the sensor. This means the driver will not necessarily see the indicated gauge temperature rise. Things now start costing a lot of money very quickly (30 – 60 seconds). According to the developer, the device can be fitted by any omplete andDIY Secure Work andR450. Mobile Cart capable person and only costs VisitWelding autoforum.co.za fo rmore details

PCL’s new Flexi Connectors protect valves from heavy hands
Does the Fuel Price RE-MOVE cash from your pocket?
PCL has a new addition to its trusty “Made in Sheffield” portfolio – Flexi Connectors for valves on Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS). The company explains that the new offering provides an excellent alternative to a solid arm connector, especially for Direct TPMS (wheel mounted valve with solid valve stem), which is increasingly popular worldwide.
Don’t waste money on Fuel to RE-MOVE gaskets and sealing components. Save yourself time and money use RE-MOVE.
Whilst current PCL connectors are still more than adequate for traditional flexible tyre valves, tests show that with a long arm connector (CO1/CO3) a force of 90N causes failure. With a short arm connector (CO5) a force of 130N is required to break Direct TPMS valves, which are notorious for having no give, unlike current valves. Flexi Connectors have a flexible rather than a solid arm, which allows them to flex and bend when pushed hard on to a tyre valve. This eliminates the risk of snapping the TPMS valve and means they are excellent for accessing motorcycle valves, which can be obstructed by their large brake discs. TPMS is used to constantly monitor tyre pressures using tyre sensors in all four tyres, and provides the driver with a warning if the pressure or temperature changes. This is vital to safety as it lowers the risk of accidents related to inaccurate tyre pressure, such as blow outs. It also saves money by increasing tyre life and reducing fuel usage. PCL’s Flexi Connectors provide a handy piece of equipment that could save you a fortune in the long run. RE-MOVE is designed for fast removal of gaskets, gasket remnants and sealing compounds. It can also be used as a highly effective and long-lasting sealant remover to remove glue, resin and paint residue. RE-MOVE is derived from an ether solvent and propellant base and can be used with all makes of engine and vehicles. Offering high levels of adhesion, RE-MOVE is drip-free. When sprayed, it gives an impermeable, highadhesion, highly effective liquid film. REMOVE can be used on vertical and overhead surfaces. RE-MOVE can also be used on sloped and vertical surfaces. RE-MOVE is super-quick to use and does not damage surfaces. Please contact your nearest Victor Reinz distributor for RE-MOVE - 70-31415-00.
