EDITORIAL ANNIVERSARY ISSUE
T
The first issue of AutoLife came out five years ago, and it has been an incredible journey. Back in 2011, AutoLife was founded on the love for automobiles and everything related to it and that is still what spurs us on today. There is an incomparable sense of satisfaction and peace that we (ironically) find in the grunts and roars of engines, and we can’t seem to get enough of it. And that is what motivates us to bring the automotive world of Nepal to you. To be honest, we have been extremely lucky to be able to do what we do and receive the love that we have received in the last 5 years. We sincerely appreciate it from the bottom of our hearts. To commemorate the fifth year of the only English automotive magazine in the country, we’ve gone all out. On the cover is the Hyundai Tucson, a compact SUV that has been incredibly popular on our roads.. However, the new Tucson has been revamped into a completely new beast, one that looks much better. See how it fared in our detailed review inside. Also on review are the stunningly gorgeous Land Rover Discovery Sport and blisteringly fast Volkswagen Scirocco. As good as it is aesthetically, the Baby Disco is equally eager and capable of putting in the work. The Volkswagen Scirocco is a blazing beauty with a strong history and probably the fastest car we have had the good fortune of driving. We hope you enjoy this anniversary issue of AutoLife, we’ve completed half a decade and we’ve got a lot more steam left. Thank you for staying with us, and we promise to keep you entertained for more years to come. Cheers

The Road Safety Media Award 2072 was given to Mr. Jagadishwar Pandey of Kantipur Media Group for continuously and effectively advocating for road safety through the national media. NASA in association with Nepal Motorcycle Federation (NMF) and FIM recently flagged off the first edition of ‘RACENARI’ – Nepal’s first womenonly bike race, in Kathmandu on 20 February, aiming to encourage more women participation in motorsports. It was the first time in the history of Nepalese motorsports that a women’s motorcycle race was held. Sports have proven to help in personal development and same can be applied to women to build on confidence, leadership skills, being team player, and break down gender stereotypes. Thus, by using motorbike racing as a tool for women empowerment, NASA plans to make it reality for girls to fully participate in any sphere of life they choose.

OWNER’S REVIEW
I used to drive a Suzuki Swift VXi before getting the Tata Bolt and I must say that I am very satisfied with my purchase. The Tata Bolt is well-decked in terms of features, both on the outside and the inside. What impressed me about the Bolt are the best-in-class features, comfort, performance, safety, suspension system and design. You can also choose one of three modes on the Multi-drive system – Eco, City or Sport depending on your need. The turbocharged engine responds really nicely on our road. The Bolt is equally comfortable and spacious. It offers a generous amount of space at the front and back as compared to other cars. The space and comfort is well backed up by an excellent quality, fit and finish. Ride quality is excellent. I have taken the Bolt to quite a few places outside the valley. The suspension system is good, both on long drives and city commute. The tires feel well planted on the road and the suspension system provides a hasslefree drive. Overall refinement is very good, the ride quality is excellent and cabin space remarkable. As of now, I haven’t encountered any problem with the Bolt. But, if in case I encounter anything, I believe the company will provide an excellent after sales service. To conclude, I would definitely refer the Bolt to buyers looking for a new car. In fact, some of my friends have already purchased the Bolt. Tata has the right product at a nice price.

Owner’s Review After having spent a considerable amount of time with the Rapid petrol variant, I decided to switch on the diesel one. If I were to list down the factors that led me chose the Rapid over other sedans, they would be the performance, mileage and better overall driving dynamics. To be honest, I feel Rapid is a better package than other sedans. Aesthetically, the sedan looks well-built and stylish providing a European feel. The interior comes fitted with luxurious features that definitely set the Rapid apart from everything else in the segment. The engine is solid and a pleasant thing to drive. The talking point of the Rapid has been the performance and good mileage figures for me. The Rapid returns an impressive mileage of 13-14 kmpl inside the valley and 18 kmpl outside the valley.
Mr. Dhiraj Bajracharya Managing Director Bajra Tour Service Pvt. Ltd.
I take the Rapid to places outside Kathmandu valley frequently. It’s equally comfortable on long drives. The suspension setup is much better than that of its competition. It provides a hassle-free ride regardless of the road conditions. Overall, the Rapid is a perfect package - outside, inside and underneath the skin. As with the after sales service, I am very satisfied with the post sales service provided by Skoda. The company actually makes an effort to call the customers and handle their queries and wishes. As I am into travel and tours business, I am thinking of buying few more Rapids for my company. Hence, if you’ve been looking to buy a sedan that’s a perfect balance between stunning looks, best-in-class comfort, superior performance, and great re-sale value, the Skoda Rapid is your answer.

T Every so often we get to remind ourselves why we love our job, and this was one of them. To commemorate our 5th year Anniversary, the good folks at Kishore Gears offered us a chance to take the Land Rover Discovery Sport for a test drive. Now, to justify our heightened level of excitement, we confess that we consider the Discovery Sport the Angelina Jolie of motor vehicles in Nepal. It is beautiful, elegant and poised, and when put to the task it can kick some serious butt. A combination hard to beat, the Land Rover Discovery Sport fills the space of the departing Freelander. We hope you understand why we were so giddy about this opportunity; who would let up a chance to go on a date with Lara Croft wearing a hot red dress? So, we put on our dancing shoes and readied to get our groove on with the Baby Disco.

EXTERIORS
Saying it’s a head turner wouldn’t quite do the Land Rover Discovery Sport justice. There is a considerable amount of Range Roveryness to it since the Discovery is based on the Range Rover Evoque. The seven seater has a larger stance, and though not as flashy as the Range Rover, has a significant pizzazz to its styling. The front features two slim slated honey combed grille in classic Land Rover fashion which is flanked by a gorgeous set of projector headlights with circular daytime running lights. The headlights are split at four points to represent a compass (reference to “discovery” we reckon). And the Discovery lettering runs across the front of the clamshell bonnet. Move on to the side and you will notice that although it resembles the Evoque in many ways, it has refrained from adapting the aggressively sloping roofline of the Range Rover. This provides greater

headroom to the Disco as well as visibility. The clean sides feature a shoulder line that runs from the fender motif to the tail lamp and takes your attention to the prominent C pillars. The rear reflects the styling cues of the front design with the Discovery name running across the bootlid and a similar smoked tail lamp split at four points.
INTERIORS AND FEATURE
It is a spacious and feature filled affair inside the Discovery Sport, with many things borrowed from its Range Rover cousins. One of these includes the uber cool pop out circular gear selector that sits in the centre console and has only been seen in Range Rover models till now. Quality has been prioritized and the climate controls, dash and switchgear are all taken from the Evoque. A high level of equipment is standard, including heated seats, part-leather upholstery, climate control, alloy wheels, Bluetooth connection and a DAB radio. On the HSE trim that we were driving, you get

full leather upholstery, electrically adjustable seats, a reversing camera, a panoramic sunroof and keyless entry. Discovery’s eight inch high resolution screen has a user-friendly interface, with clear labels and a responsive touchscreen, The standard 10-speaker sound system includes Bluetooth audio streaming and good sound quality. The steering wheel is well sized and feels good on your hands. The instrument cluster displays two analog dials for the speedometer and rpm meter along with other telltale lights and information. The large seats are comfortable and supportive and there’s plenty of room for all passengers and provides impressive kneeroom in the rear. To live up to its 5+2 seater claim there is the optional additional seat for two which is basically a split bench that’s placed in the boot. However, seating two full grown adults in it is a big ask.

Sport is not a reluctant performer. The 2.2 liter diesel engine has a lot of grunt and produces 150PS/190PS of maximum power while peak torque is 400Nm/420Nm upwards of 1750rpm. Its engine is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission developed by ZF which utilizes a torque converter instead of a dual clutch system. The power delivery is linear and brings a smile to your face with its smooth responsiveness. There’s a firm edge to the suspension at low speed, but the new multi-link rear axle comes into play at higher speeds smoothing out most bumps and potholes. On twists and turns the baby Disco displays its agility. With its sharp steering the bulky frame dives through bends eagerly. The electronically controlled permanent four-wheel drive provides decent traction even in slippery conditions. You also get a choice of Normal, Mud, Sand, Rocks and Snow modes in terms of the terrain response system. Combine that with the variable hill descent control feature, an impressive wading depth of 600mm, plenty of ground clearance, excellent approach and departure angles and you get a mean machine ready to take on anything that lies ahead of its path.
VERDICT
Although not as flashy and decked out as Range Rovers, the Land Rover Discovery Sport is one of the most premium vehicles you will see in the Nepali roads. The plethora of features, striking good looks, and impressive driving capabilities provides a combination that few other products can boast of. And when we say striking good looks, we mean it.

The Hyundai Tucson, more commonly referred to as the “Tuckson”, gained popularity when it first came to the Nepali market. Now this was before Hyundai brought on the overhaul in their design concept and introduced the fluidic beauties that we see on our roads. Although it was a decent looking machine, it wasn’t the striking good looks that were getting the Tucson all the attention. What did increase its popularity was the fact that it was as close to owning an SUV as you could get without actually buying an SUV. In fact, in the Nepali context you would categorize the Hyundai Tucson as an SUV (just like you would say the Rav 4 is one) on account of its large stance. Hence, the Compact SUV was largely accepted as a sport utility vehicle. Furthermore, it had the capability to stand up to the status of being given the stature so it was loved by the masses despite its less than average looks (sorry Hyundai).
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
Through the years it has gone through a lot of cosmetic changes along with the rest of the Hyundai roster and we are pleased to see the Tucson in its new avatar. It’s better than ever and is a gorgeous thing to look at. Here is our review of the all new Hyundai Tucson which looks to follow up on the massive success of the Creta.
Exterior Tucson has dropped the no frills image and really gone all out for their new iteration. It maintains the stature of its predecessors and adds on to the design elements with much of the same cues as they’ve incorporated in their larger Santa Fe. The bulgy bug eyed head lamps have been replaced with a set of sleeker wraparound headlights which come with LED DRLs. A prominent triple slated chrome plated grille houses the Hyundai badge inside the hexagonal shape and gives the front end a strong appeal. High shoulder lines run through the length of the car to meet the wrap around tail lamps in the rear. A sloping roofline leads to a sporty spoiler and merges with a well rounded behind. Rolling on 18 inch rims the Tucson boasts of a very attractive side profile, including the thick black body cladding and a chromed rising beltline moulding. Horizontally split rear tail lamps have integrated indicators and sit under the rear windshield. The gradient of the rear windshield is also significant and gives it
AUTOLIFE MAR-APR 2016 53
a sportier appearance than the older version which is further accentuated with its rear skid plate. Overall, the third generation of the Tucson seems to have got it right in terms of appearance. Hyundai’s design philosophy has been a winner and even more so in the case of the Tucson. Many argue that it looks like a larger version of the Creta and we can’t see what’s so bad about that. The Creta was a magnificent piece of design and the Tucson treads in the same area.

Interior and Features It is a feature rich affair inside the spacious cabin of the Tucson. It has a panoramic sunroof, cruise control, drive modes, parking sensors; you name it, it has it. And the fit and finish of the interior is of top quality and its dashboard has a smooth finish with dials and knobs performing various functions well. However, the infotainment system is a massive letdown for a car which otherwise feels extremely premium. A simple system console performs the duties of Bluetooth connection, phone and music. Steering wheels get a number of controls that manage telephony, music and mode selection. The instrument cluster provides the information you need when you drive in a visually appealing and readable manner in a 4.2” color TFT LCD flanked with analog speedometer and rev meter. Rear view cameras display what’s going on behind you on the inside rear view mirror. The Tucson features ample adjustment in the steering wheel and seat, so it’s easy to find a comfortable driving position. There is plenty of room to seat 5 people comfortably and the seats themselves support the passengers well. Front seats are even equipped with cooling air ventilation system for highhumidity weather conditions or three levels of heating
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
capability for chilly winters. Air bags and ABS will be offered as standards and you get 6 of them. To make your life easier, there is an added feature of an intuitive hands-free smart tailgate which will open automatically when you stand within the rear detection zone for three seconds or more with the smart key in your pocket.
Performance You get the option of a 2.0 MPi petrol engine capable of a maximum 155 ps at 6,200 rpm and 19.6 kg∙m torque at 4,000 rpm and a 2.0 CRDi diesel engine that delivers 185 ps at 4,000 rpm and 41.0 kg·m torque at 1,750 -2,750 rpm. We were driving the petrol engine and we started out with it in the eco mode to see how it fared in the city traffic. That is where you would most likely be
AUTOLIFE MAR-APR 2016 55
using it any ways. But to be completely honest, we also wanted to get that out of the way before we got to go at it in the open roads. The eco mode was surprisingly fun to drive, there was noticeable lag but that is a given on any automatic and that too in eco mode. Maneuverability was decent for such a big car and it handled itself very well in the urban cluster. Over the shoulder visibility could have been improved though. Also, like with most other offerings from the Korean manufacturer, we would have loved it if there was more feel and feedback on the steering. Nevertheless, we are beginning to get more used to the light drivability.
THE NEW HYUNDAI TUCSON IS DEFINITELY A LOOKER AND IT COMES FILLED TO THE BRIM WITH FEATURES. AESTHETIC UPGRADES WERE JUST WHAT THE POPULAR CAR NEEDED.
The new Tucson has a host of safety features which protect you if you’re driving like an idiot. There is the Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system which is designed to secure you from any potential collisions ahead, using high-tech radar and camera sensors that keep you safe even when you’re not looking. There is also the blind spot detection (BSD) which also uses sensors to monitor vehicles approaching blind spots from the side and rear end of the vehicle. After switching the eco mode on and off several times within the city, we finally headed to the outskirts of the city where the roads opened up and we could really give it a go in the new Tucson. Switch to sport mode and the Tucson is an entirely different beast. Triple digits come easy and it doesn’t make a big fuss about it. Fling it around corners and it maintains its calm and composure adding to your driving experience.
Verdict We’re not going to say the Tucson was the most loved SUV (compact), but it was definitely extremely popular. Although
56
AUTOLIFE MAR-APR 2016
most people pronounce it differently, the Tucson was somehow always amongst the talked about SUVs in Nepal. But it wasn’t always pretty and we never really fell for it… until now. The new Hyundai Tucson is definitely a looker and it comes filled to the brim with features. Aesthetic upgrades were just what the popular car needed. And we don’t mind that it takes the SUV tag because it comes pretty close to it in the Nepali context. It is large, has good road presence, and provides a premium experience throughout.

“FOR THE PRICE PAID FOR A BENELLI, YOU WILL GET AN OVERWHELMING RETURN IN TERMS OF ENGINEERING, COMFORT, AND EXCELLENT RIDE -ABILITY.” facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
Saurav JB Rana, Chairman- KTM International Trading Pvt. Ltd, speaks to Autolife Nepal on establishing the Benelli brand in Nepal and revving up for a bigger slice of the sub600cc motorcycle market. Excerpts:
#
We are planning to expand our presence throughout the country.
AL: What is your strategy to introduce the Benelli brand to Nepal? How do you look at the Nepalese super-bike market? Is the customer price sensitive or value conscious? SR: There has always been a colossal interest for superbikes in this country. If you look at the current pool of superbike enthusiasts, they are well educated and informed about the bike brands which are available in the local and global market .The current trend in the dynamic Nepalese motorcycle market is such that buyers are willing to invest on quality products. This is the reason for the sudden influx of premium motorcycling brands into the country in recent years. Benelli, the latest Italian marquee to enter the country, offers a range of motorcycles that feature finely tuned engineering, rider ergonomics and outstanding design. In the initial phase, we would like to focus on the sub- 600cc segment as there is a lot of excitement surrounding it, with bike enthusiasts looking to explore and mature in this segment. Our range of motorcycles fit this profile perfectly and this is the segment where we would like to build a strong presence in the coming years. In addition to that, we also want to emphasize on the support structure for our customers. Our No.1 priority is to provide our customers with an excellent after-sales support. Hence, we have designed our showroom and service center in such a way that it accommodates all the inquiries, issues and servicing needs. We hope that this will create a positive partnership with our customers leading to an enjoyable riding experience. AL: What will be the product portfolio of Benelli in Nepal? Which segment do you see scope of growth in? SR: First and foremost, we are overwhelmed with the response we’ve received for our products. Benelli has a range of bikes from speedy 250cc to 1200cc monsters. But, in the context of the Nepalese market, the sub-600cc is where we see a lot of potential and that is where we would initially like to focus on before landing our more powerful models. In that regard, our current range in Nepal includes the TNT250, TNT 300, 600GT, and 600i all of which deliver an exhilarating riding experience. Besides motorcycles, we will also import various models of Benelli e-bicycles which have gained excellent reputation globally for their design and efficiency. In addition to that, we also offer the sleek Zenzero 150 scooter.
it is associated with average bikes with meager performance and build-quality. However, Benelli is just the opposite. We believe that for the price paid for a Benelli, you will get an overwhelming return in terms of engineering, comfort, and excellent ride-ability. Benelli wants to set high industry standards in terms of pricing and quality in each of the segment it represents. This package is what we believe will appeal to the riders here in Nepal. AL: What sales numbers are you looking to hit for the fiscal year? SR: We want to be one of the prominent players in the growing sub-600cc segment. Hence, we are looking to capture at least 10% of the 250-600cc class for the upcoming fiscal year AL: Easy financing plays a big role in purchasing superbikes. Do you plan to tie up with any financial institutions? SR: Yes, of course! We are going to make European bikes very affordable in Nepal. Therefore, we are negotiating with reputed financial and banking institutions to provide our customers with the best financing services. AL: How many dealerships are you expecting to set up by the end of this year? SR: We are planning to expand our presence throughout the country. As of now, we are planning to open at least a dealership each in Pokhara, Narayanghat, Butwal and Itahari. We are receiving applications and are very excited with the interest and inquiries regarding Benelli. AL: What USPs does Benelli have over its competitors? SR: Benelli is one of the oldest motorcycle manufacturers in the world. Established in 1911, the Italian manufacturer brings with it a history like no other – over 100 years of motorcycle building, innovation, and racing achievements. The exotic Italian brand is the only European brand with a presence from 250cc to 1130cc. Benelli also has a lot of first in-line to its name – the first in-line in the 600cc category, the first adventurer in the 600cc and the first in-line two in the 300cc. Similarly, Benelli also offers the ‘BestIn-Class’ by offering top specifications as compared to competitors. All of these factors create an ideal package that provides outstanding value to motorcycle enthusiasts who want to own a Benelli. We are very proud to represent Benelli and look forward to establishing the legendary marquee in Nepal.
AL: Do you think a more affordable brand like ‘Benelli’ become a hit just because it will be priced much lower than the others? SR: First, affordable biking is a very relative term in the Nepali market. Second, facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

TALKING ’73 WITH THE NEPALESE AUTO INDUSTRY The Nepalese automobile market saw a steep sales decline in B.S.2072, as a host of factors like the April 2015 Nepal Earthquake, fuel embargo and cautious buyer sentiment, slowed down purchases. Now that the Nepalese automobile industry has started to recover from the prolonged slump that lasted for almost a year, the market is now set to record improved numbers. This resurgence of the automobile market can be attributed to aggressive product launches linedup by many companies in the first quarter itself. Autolife Nepal caught up with some prominent players from the domestic automobile industry to discuss what’s in store for B.S.2073.
TATA MOTORS
Arjun Karki Manager- Sales & Marketing Passenger Vehicle Business Unit Sipradi trading pvt. Ltd. AL: In the passenger vehicles segment, in your opinion, what are the areas Tata Motors Nepal needs to further strengthen? AK: Though we possess around 75% of market share in Multi Utility Vehicle (MUV) segment, we haven’t been able to gain the same in other segments. The hatchback segment comprises a massive 60% of the Nepalese auto industry; hence, we are trying to strengthen our position in this segment. And we believe our world-class products – Bolt, Indica and e-XETA will increase our presence in this segment. Tata Bolt, being the second offering of the company’s HORIZONEXT philosophy, is loaded with a gamut of FIRST-IN-CLASS features and it is now offered with a BEST-INCLASS warranty of 4 years. Furthermore, we are strengthening our network, processes & trainings so that we

So far, with our price positioning, we have managed to cater to a select target group and we have been very successful to address the demands of this segment. Even outside Kathmandu valley, we have expanded very fast and the customers have accepted our vehicles. Hence, we can say that our journey so far has been an amazing one.
can provide excellent service to our customers. We are also confident that our upcoming #fantastico hatchback, the Tata Tiago, will fare well in the Nepalese market. AL: Do you expect B.S.2073 to be better for Tata Motors passenger vehicle sales in terms of growth and sales compared to B.S. 2072? AK: Yes, of course! We will be pushing for 2nd position in the upcoming fiscal year. With the market gaining normalcy and interest rates going down, we hope B.S. 2073 will be an exciting year for Tata Motors in Nepal. AL: Which segment will be Tata working on next to introduce in Nepal? AK: The recently launched Tata Safari Storme LET, a face-lifted version of the popular Safari Storme, is picking up well in the Nepalese market. Also, Tiago from Tata Motors - the all new hatchback car from Tata Motors loaded with stunning design, cutting edge driving dynamics & much more, is in the pipeline. The Tata Tiago is sure to get similar overwhelming response in the Nepalese market.
SS: We are not chasing figures; our intention is to have happy Datsun Customers. As of now, we are satisfied with the way things are happening. AL: Tell us about your upcoming products in the Nepalese market. SS: Nepal is an important market in Nissan Exports strategy and we do have exciting products in the line-up.

SUZUKI CARS Karan Chaudhary Executive Director Chaudhary Group
AL: Suzuki has managed to hold onto its market share through the recent times, and even increase it. What is your magic formula? KC: Suzuki has always focused on providing right product to satisfy demands of different customers. We have the largest product breadth in the company ranging from entry level, utility and premium products. Similarly, we also boost the largest sales and service network in the country. Suzuki cars are well-known in term of quality and reliability while being acceptable as most economic brand in terms of ownership cost in the country. This with sheer perseverance of CG| Motocorp in maintaining its ideology in providing best customer satisfaction and easy accessibility of Suzuki Product, Service, and Spares has made Suzuki the No1. selling car in the country. AL: What are your expectations of the upcoming Baleno? KC: We expect the Baleno to carve out a different space for itself in the larger hatch segment and we will not settle for anything less than no 1 status in the segment. The car when launched will be the most premium and elegant looking car in the segment. Apart from the styling, the Baleno also has best in class mileage and high power output .With host of new features for both comfort and safety, the Baleno will appeal to young customers who want excitement and for families who demand comfort and safety.
MAHINDRA Nitesh Singhal Country Manager Mahindra Two Wheelers
AL: Over the past decade in Nepal, the Nepalese two-wheeler market has seen several new players entering and doing exceptionally well. What impact do you see of this for a new brand trying to establish a foothold in this market? Although Mahindra is a relatively new entrant to the 2 Wheeler market, we have been in the Nepalese market for more than 6 years now and we are growing every day. Our products are well-received in the highly competitive Nepalese twowheelers market. The Nepalese market is growing at a tremendous phase and there is a huge scope to further enhance our share. We have just launched the powerful Gusto 125cc with unique car like features in Nepal and we have been getting very encouraging response to the same. Going forward, we expect Mahindra Two Wheelers to see an increased market share in this market. AL: Can you elaborate on Mahindra’s plans to expand its presence in the highlycompetitive Nepalese two-wheelers market? We are looking to expand our dealer network and launch a few more products to expand our product portfolio during the next 18 months. . All our upcoming products will be feature-rich and will set industry benchmarks in their categories. Similarly, we are also working to expand our customers reach. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
HERO ELECTRIC Suraj Ghiraiya Managing Director Prime Business Pvt. ltd.
AL: Some say that sustainability is becoming an issue for EVs in Nepal. How do you see that? SG: Increasing concern about the environmental impact of current transportation system as well as the risks associated with peak oil have led to greater interest in sustainable transportation. Green economy and the need to protect the environment are one of the most discussed topics in the world today. Hence, mobility systems based on electric vehicles (EVs) are considered promising for coping with these challenges. Coming to Nepal, we do have a lot of ground to cover for achieving sustainability in the EV segment. There are lots of challenges for EV’s to prosper in the Nepalese market but these challenges can be easily tackled with positive support from the public and private sector. I do not see sustainability of EV’s as an issue but I would rather take this as a challenge which we can overcome with a right approach. AL: How do you estimate the sales potential for EVs in Nepal? SG: EV’s have huge potential in Nepal. Nepal, being the second richest country in water resources, with a potential of generating around 80000 MW of electricity should not doubt the future of EV’s. We may be struggling today but I am enough of an optimist. In the future, we will have enough electricity, not only for domestic and industrial purposes but also for our vehicles. In my projection, the EV sales will definitely increase on yearly basis. The growth may be slow but not negative. AUTOLIFE MAR-APR 2016 63

Volkswagen’s flagship hatchback, the original Golf MK1, replaced the iconic Beetle in 1974. It went on to become Volkswagen’s best selling model and the world’s second best selling model. The Volkswagen Scirocco coupe also first appeared in 1974, sharing the same underpinnings as the Golf. In fact, the Scirocco went on sale before the Golf so VW could iron out any mechanical niggles ahead of launching the vitally important hatchback. The compact sport coupe underwent two generations of development between 1974 and 1992. After a 16 year hiatus, a third generation of the Scirocco was reintroduced in August 2008. And we finally got hold of it. Yes, it was much later than we would have like it but we were willing to let it slide just this once. There is only one reason for that; it was blisteringly fast.

The Scirocco is a compact sports coupe which gives it an extremely unique shape for the Nepali market.
EXTERIOR
The Scirocco is a compact sports coupe which gives it an extremely unique shape for the Nepali market. It is a three door body that tapers to the front end where it features large air intakes and a honey combed bumper grille. Fog lamps and indicators sit on either side of the bumper with black ribs and bi-xenon headlight units flank either side of the grille. These headlights have turning lights and separate daytime driving lights integrated into them. Sharp creases run from across the bonnet to the A pillars from the headlights. LED turn signals have been integrated into the door mirrors. A prominent shoulder line and narrowing window panes emphasize the side profile of the coupe that runs on Pirellis with a sporty 18 inch alloys. The roofline tapers down to a sleekly designed rear. In lieu to the sporty design of the vehicle, a racing stripe runs through the center of the bonnet and through to the rear. Wrap around rear lights look good on the rounded rear. Chromium-plated twin tailpipes look great and reflect the sporty nature of what’s under the bonnet.
INTERIOR
Volkswagen have kept it relatively simple with the interiors of the Scirocco, focusing on quality and robust build instead of overflowing features. For a sports coupe, it is incredibly spacious and allows two grown adults to sit relatively comfortably in the back seat without compromising on the passenger and driver comfort. Driving position is comfortable and you get that low slung experience on the seats that do well to provide you with good support. The dash gets an all black treatment with hints of chrome and silver. It has a user friendly three spoke steering with a number of buttons to give the driver easy access to the functionalities of the vehicle. The leather grip is a great touch which is also included in the handbrake lever grip and gear knob. Analog dials display the speed and rpm on the instrument cluster. The centre console has the knobs and buttons to control the AC and media but is considerably out dated in terms of functionality

and style. In terms of safety you get six airbags along with electronic stability control, ABS, antil slip regulation and electronic differential lock.
PERFORMANCE
The traditional and less than flashy designs are more than made up for in terms of performance. Under the bonnet is a powerful engine that propels the coupe; and it lives up to the sport coupe name. All Sciroccos have four cylinders and turbochargers, with drive going exclusively to the front wheels via a choice of manual and dual-clutch (DSG) gearboxes. We were driving the 1.4 TSI, which delivered 160bhp at 5800rpm and 240Nm from 1,500- to 4,500rpm. To put it in layman’s terms: it bolts like a rocket and pins you to your seats. It is amazingly fast through straight tarmac and corners like an agile beast on twists and turns. Braking is also good and improves stopping confidence. Where it truly excels is the 7 speed DSG gear box. It can only be had with the six-speed manual transmission and it is a fine and smooth unit. The seven speed DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) comprises of two independent gearbox units. As they move through the gears, the dual-clutch mechanism allows the engine to engage with each of the two gearboxes in turn via two drive shafts. The dual-clutch gearbox
70
AUTOLIFE MAR-APR 2016
permits an automatic gear change with no interruption in power flow. Switch it into sport mode and the DSG holds on to the gears for longer, as well as shifting down earlier as necessary. You can also change gears manually and Tiptronic switches on the multifunction steering wheel make this action particularly sporty. Clearance is low and although it provides an extremely sporty driving experience it does come as an obstacle in many situations. The ride is expectedly firm, but the adaptive dampers in comfort mode take the initial sharp hit off potholes and speed humps. Rear vision is minimal, and if you are to look at the bright side of it, it gives you a sports car feel.
Verdict
The Volkswagen Scirocco is a fast car; and it is a driver’s car. If you love to drive, you will have a very good time from the moment you switch on the ignition. It takes little provocation to get the front wheel spinning where the power is delivered surprisingly well. Furthermore, it is an extremely good looking machine. The sports coupe shape is unique for our market and it is sure to get you the attention. But that is not what you get the Scirocco for. You get it for the pure pleasure of driving, the exhilaration of blistering through tarmac and the focused energy of cornering through sharp bends.

Switchback racer Roan Tamang’s Interview: 1) How did you get into pro-cycling? - I started mountain biking as joyrides, but later after winning a few races, I realized this is what I wanted to do. It was in 2011 that I decided to become a professional mountain biker, thus I started my racing career. 2) What are your career highlights till now? - I’ve participated in many races, but my career highlights are; the world Championship held at South Africa, Asian MTB Championship in China, Langkawi International MTB Challenge in Malaysia and almost every International standard races held in Nepal. Recently, I came 2nd in 14th National Cross-country Championship held in Chobar and came 1st in Tansen Ultra held a couple of months ago. 3) How different is the track this year in comparison to last year? - The track this year is comparatively different to last year. The rock sections have been extended; in addition we have added root, mud and sand sections. They also have added another pump track.

4) How challenging is it? - The track is challenging and difficult this year for the elite category. Since the track is one of the only international standard tracks, there are numbers of steep climbs, steep down hills and sharp turnings. The trail is challenging but yet extremely fun. 5) How is your training going on? - My training is going very good and I am in form for the race. Thanks to the switchback team for going with me through my training phase.

6) Finally, do you have few words for your fans and upcoming riders? - All I have to say is keep riding. No matter how big the challenge is, the trick is never to give up. Always walk on the path of progression. For more details about the race please visit http://www. switchbacknepal.com/ or find us on Facebook. Entry forms are available at all major bike shops.

AUTOLIFE EVENT
THE 8th
ENFIELD POKER RUN Ringing in the New Year amidst a writhing mess of sweaty bodies drunkenly flailing to the really loud tunes of a local DJ just doesn’t cut it. Roaring through the highways riding a loud mechanical steed, on the other hand, seems more like it. And that is exactly what many Royal Enfield enthusiasts have been doing to welcome the Nepali New Year for the last 8 years. They call it the Enfield Rendezvous and Poker Run.
In its core, the Enfield Rendezvous & Poker Run is a non-competitive annual motorcycle riding event aimed at bringing together Royal Enfield and other classic vintage motorcycle riders for a ride through the Nepali countryside. To make things more interesting, each rider gets to draw a card at each pit stop to accumulate a single hand of Poker where the winner receives and award along with some massive goodies. . In addition to that, there are also other various specific awards and the check points offer free food, drinks or lucky spots prizes. The event is a well orchestrated affair which is a commendable feat considering there are over 200 Royal Enfield motorcycles thundering through the route to Pokhara at a single go. However, Sacred Summits Pvt Ltd has been doing a splendid job of organizing the largest motorcycle rally in Nepal consisting of riders and participants from all over the world. With Police escort till the outskirts of the valley and back up vehicles, mechanics, and spare parts in stock there is very little chance of anyone running into any major problems. Not many would really believe that the first edition of the Poker Run started off with just 10 riders. Rabi Thapa (CEO of Sacred Summits Pvt. Ltd) in association with an Australian friend Stewart Mclean, had initiated the event in 2009 in memory of their riding friend late Binod Chhetri, an adventurer and a die-hard fan of the Royal Enfield motorcycles. Over the years, it has gained much popularity and has become a ‘must attend’
78

event for Enfielders to come together once a year to swap bike riding stories, celebrate the Nepali New Year in style and share the road with fellow locals and international riders. Royal Enfields run the show at the Poker Run, and apart from the occasional Harley Davidson, Triumph, or a decked out Honda CB you will be hard pressed to find any other run of the mill motorcycle. And it is no coincidence either. You won’t find me lugging my generic commuter bike amongst these retro and classic motorcycles. It isn’t just about the image though. What you have to realize is that anyone who gets a Royal Enfield doesn’t just get one for the sake of it. These machines are not primarily used to get from point A to B and people who acquire one for that purpose are truly missing out. These motorcycles come from the stables of one of the longest running companies in the world and their century old heritage commands respect and passion. Owning a Bullet entails that you take in its culture and heritage, which is why you see so many people purchasing old beauties people discard as junk. To be honest, owning and caring for one isn’t a walk in the park either. You will have to give it your proper attention and effort if you ever hope of creating a bond with your machine. For the fortunate ones who do create this bond, the experience is definitely rewarding. Your motorcycle becomes a medium of expression and it will take you places in ways you could never experience inside a rolling cabin. Because they are so close to the rider’s hearts you will find as many different Enfields as there are riders. After market modifications are common and you might find some motorcycles pushing the bounds of practicality. Nevertheless they maintain a uniqueness of their own in one way or the other.
Despite the different characteristics and uniqueness, there is an unmistakable sense of camaraderie between the riders which keeps bringing them back together year after year. This year, Sacred Summits has pushed it up a notch with the 8th Royal Enfield Rendezvous and Poker Run. It will take place from the 12th-14th of April 2016 and riders will be able to enjoy the accommodation and facilities of The Fulbari Resort &Spa Pokhara along with free flowing alcohol and BBQ dinner to usher in the Nepali New Year 2073 BS. After the celebrations, the riders are welcome to partake in the charity ride organized to help and support a local school the next day. The Poker Run is Nepal’s biggest extravaganza on two wheels and they are not too coy about it either. Even if they tried, keeping a patrol of 200 Royal Enfields silent can be a gargantuan task. By the looks of it, no one really appears to be trying to hide their presence. And that is exactly how you welcome a new year, loud, proud and with unbridled passion. Hold on to your horses for the loudest and biggest reunion in Nepal– The Enfield Poker Run.

The valley below appears to stretch infinitely into the hazy oblivion over which floats gigantic rolling hills. In the northern horizon lies Nepal’s crown jewels - snowcapped mountains in their vivid glory. Hear holy bells toll in ancient Hindu temples and smell sweet incense from early morning prayers at Buddhist monasteries as you ricochet past devotee, and make head turns swerving, jumping and dropping. Notwithstanding, there’s no room for distraction, however beautiful the sight, shredding Nagarkot in race mode. The trails ahead indeed quite demand our undivided attention throughout.
