EDITORIAL THE SUV ISSUE

Big game hunting is historically associated with the hunting of Africa’s “big five” games: the lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros, along with tigers and rhinoceroses on the Indian subcontinent. Here at AutoLife, we have never condoned this heinous act of cruelty and we never will. But that doesn’t mean we don’t have our eye for big game. The prowling beauties we fancy are powered by fossil fuel, run on four wheels, pack a punch under the hood, and goes vroom-vroom. This month, we have one of the most coveted games at our hand, the brand new Toyota Fortuner. A newer, more modern version that looks ready to dominate the segment, the Toyota Fortuner could very well be amongst the king of the beasts. The lucky buggers that we are, we got to test it out for our cover story. Also on our crosshair this month is the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross. Wading into the pickup truck fray of the Nepalese automobile industry, Isuzu’s offering has plenty to prove. Putting the workhorse to the test, we put it across its paces and then some. As you can tell, we had plenty on our plates for this issue, so to unwind we headed to Dolalghat for some fish feasting. Thanks to Go Ford Nepal, we had the new Ford Ecosport Platinum to take us there. Check out our short road trip to the popular getaway where we did what we do best… eat a lot. There is plenty more to keep you company in this issue of AutoLife. We catch up with Kishore Maharjan, an auto-fanatic, to learn about his AutoLife and we got to chill with some of the up and coming motovloggers of Nepal. We hope you enjoy this issue of AutoLife as much as we enjoyed making it. We’ll be back again next month with more of what we all love. Until next time.

TATA NEXON ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS ANNOUNCED With the launch lined up for around the Indian festive season this year, Tata Motors has announced the engine specifications on its all-new offering. The Nexon will sport petrol and diesel powertrain options, and both the engines have been indigenously developed in-house by the manufacturer. Terming the new engines “power-packed” and “performance oriented”, they are the 1.2L Turbocharged Petrol from the Revotron series and the 1.5L Diesel engine from the Revotorq family. Tata is promising “unrivalled package of fuel efficiency, performance, and refinement” in the new motors. The petrol unit,is in fact, a turbocharged version of the one found on the Tiago and Tigor, and is tuned to belt out 108 bhp at 5000

rpm and 170 Nm of peak torque between 2000-4000 rpm. On the other hand, the 1.5-litre diesel motor is completely new and has been tuned for 108 bhp at 3750 rpm and 260 Nm of torque between 1500-2750 rpm. Tata Motors has also revealed that both engines will come paired to the 6-speed TA6300 synchromesh with overdrive manual transmission. The Nexon also gets first-in-segment multi drive modes – Eco, City, and Sport. While the Eco mode is designed to offer a relaxed drive experience favouring fuel economy, the City mode offers the optimum balance between power and torque. The Sport mode leads to superior throttle response for a spirited drive experience, the company said.

KTM TO BUY DUCATI? As per the reports in Indian media, KTM is close to finalising a deal on acquiring Ducati. Bajaj Auto has invested a total of €198.1 million and holds 47.99% stake in KTM. At the 10th annual general meeting of Bajaj Auto, Rajiv Bajaj, MD, Bajaj Auto, said: “We are very close to finalising a very promising alliance, it’s not certain, that it will happen, but if it happens, it will open up enormous possibilities for the company. That is why we keep our money (cash on books) with us, so, once in a while, when an opportunity comes along, we are ready.” Several manufacturers, including Hero MotoCorp, Royal Enfield, Bajaj Auto and Harley-Davidson are in the race to buy Ducati from Volkswagen owned Audi. Volkswagen is reportedly planning to sell the Italian two-wheeler brand to compensate for the losses made due to the dieselgate controversy.

Next year’s Formula 1 cars will all be fitted with the Halo cockpit protection system, the FIA has announced. The Halo, designed to reduce the risk of injury from debris or other objects striking a driver’s head, was trialled by a number of teams during Grand Prix practice sessions last year. With the support of the teams, certain features of its design will be further enhanced ahead of its introduction in 2018. However, some drivers have expressed concerns about the ‘halo’, a wishboneshaped device that sits on top of the cockpit and meets in a point in front of the driver, both on aesthetic and philosophical grounds. But, as a collective body, they are in favour of additional head protection. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

FACELIFTED KIA SORENTO LAUNCHED IN SOUTH KOREA Kia Motors has launched the facelifted version of the Sorento SUV in South Korea. The facelifted model gets design changes on the outside as well as more premium features inside. The SUV is available with a choice of three engine options in South Korea. The update will include some light visual tweaks as well as the implementation of an eight-speed automatic transmission, which was revealed last year and will replace the current six-speed unit. The inside is a more significant, bringing an upgraded touchscreen system with Apple CarPlay and wireless inductive charging. Kia reworked the car’s steering wheel and gear selector, adopting a premium look with perforated leather joined by quilted leather trim in luxury models. The car retains its seven-seat versatility and powered tailgate.

ALL NEW JAGUAR E-PACE REVEALED WITH EPIC BARREL ROLL Jaguar’s new compact performance SUV leapt into the record books with a 15.3 metre-long jump complete with a 270-degree corkscrew-like ‘barrel roll’. Demonstrating the agility, precision and performance of Jaguar’s newest SUV, the feat was the final test for E-PACE after 25 gruelling months of work across four continents to ensure extreme durability and that it lived up to Jaguar’s Art of Performance philosophy. The Jaguar E-PACE is a five-seat, compact SUV that packs the design and performance of a Jaguar sports car into a spacious, practical and connected all-wheel-drive vehicle. The exterior design is inspired by the Jaguar F-TYPE sports car and characterised by the distinctive Jaguar grille, muscular proportions, short overhangs and powerful haunches that give the E-PACE a bold and purposeful stance, instantly communicating dynamic agility. Jaguar sports car DNA is also evident in the fast sweep of the roofline and the distinctive side window graphic. The E-PACE is also the first Jaguar to feature the company’s next-generation Head-Up Display technology. The advanced display can project up to 66 per cent more information onto the windscreen using large, full-colour graphics with enhanced clarity. Essential information including vehicle speed and navigation directions are in full view at all times, with alerts and updates for the infotainment, safety and convenience features all projected directly into the driver’s eyeline – reducing the need to look away from the road. E-PACE is available with a range of powerful and efficient Ingenium petrol and diesel engines. The 300PS Ingenium petrol turbo engine powers the sporting SUV from 0-60mph in just 5.9 seconds (6.4 seconds for the 0-100km/h sprint) before reaching an electronically-limited top speed of 243km/h.

GROUND CLEARANCE OF ALL CARS IN INDIA HAS BEEN REDUCED ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) has issued a new regulation wherein measurements of the ground clearance should be on the basis of the vehicle’s laden weight or gross weight. The ground clearance measurements must now be done with the vehicle loaded to its maximum authorised gross vehicle weight (GVW). Prior to this, measurement was done with a vehicle at its kerb weight (unladen). Ground clearance is one of the very important dimensions of a vehicle. It is defined as the height of the lowermost part of the vehicle with respect to ground level. The suspension system of a vehicle compresses as the load is increased on it, thus resulting in a reduced ground clearance. When an SUV is loaded with its defined maximum capacity, its ground clearance generally decreases by 20-30 per cent with respect to that in the unladen condition.

DID YOU KNOW THAT FERRARI HAS BANNED ALL ITS EMPLOYEES FROM BUYING ITS CARS? While other manufacturers will offer its employees or even past employees special discounts on their cars as a reward for their service and loyalty, Ferrari works pretty much in the opposite way. In a recent interview with the Australian motoring website Drive, Ferrari’s chief marketing and commercial officer Enrico Galliera revealed that among the company’s list of stringent rules, company employees are normally forbidden from buying a brand new Ferrari off the factory line. The only two Ferrari employees who are ordinarily made an exception and allowed to buy a new Ferrari road car are the Scuderia Ferrari F1 team drivers.

The pickup truck market is very limited in Nepal. Although primarily manufactured for people who constantly have to carry a lot of load around or those who use it as a utility vehicle, it is not necessarily restricted to this target segment. While this may usually pertain to the commercial vehicle segment pickup trucks’ utility and the roads of Nepal, several models have become popular choices in the passenger segment too. People are starting to opt for pickup trucks for their versatility of a double cab truck.

T

Entering the fray again is the once popular Isuzu moniker with their D-Max V-Cross. This truck has a lot to prove, and demonstrate what it holds up against the likes of the more popular Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, Ford Ranger and the lot. And we put the D-Max through its paces to find out just this.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

THE EXTERIOR:

As we expect with any pickup that hopes to get noticed, the D-Max V Cross has a mean and intimidating looking front end. Two bulky chrome slates with the Isuzu nametag brandished dead center adorns the grille. Upward sweeping headlights with integrated indicators flank the grille. Projector lamps accentuate the face of the V-Cross. It sits tall with big off road tires and optional bull bars. The big flared wheel arches also added to the big brawny look. The cargo space in the back is pretty spacious too. You can carry a lot of stuff in the back and if you are the type of person who likes to go on adventure trips then you can fit 5 people’s luggage and some extra items with ease.

AUTOLIFE JULY/AUGUST 2017 25

THE INTERIOR:

A common misconception about pickup trucks is that the seating space is compromised due to the huge cargo space but this truck proves otherwise. It has a pretty spacious cabin and can fit 5 people easily and comfortably. The seats are quite soft and provide decent support. It will be pretty good on long distance travels. However the dashboard does feel a little compromised with hard touch plastic everywhere. It would be a lot better if a little soft touch material were used on the upper part of the dash where our hands touch the most. The model that we tested had the optional 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The absence of a physical volume button made it a tad bit difficult. Since the volume buttons on the infotainment system are touch capacitive buttons, it is hard to locate the exact buttons while driving the car. The reversing camera is integrated to the infotainment system and it comes in really handy while reversing such a long vehicle.

THE PERFORMANCE:

This vehicle is powered by a 2.5L turbocharged diesel engine producing 134bhp @3600RPM and 320Nm of Torque @1800RPM. The torque kicks in really soon so you feel the initial tug but it tapers out in the higher RPM. The big diesel engine also tends to get noisy when pushed hard so it is better if you shift early. If you get stuck in a muddy situation then you can switch from 2X4 to 4X4 with a turn of a dial. In the 2X4 mode the power is sent to the rear wheels and it is pretty capable in the 2X4 mode but if you have some tough terrain ahead of you, you can put it into 4H or 4L depending on the condition.

26

AUTOLIFE JULY/AUGUST 2017

A COMMON MISCONCEPTION ABOUT PICKUP TRUCKS IS THAT THE SEATING SPACE IS COMPROMISED DUE TO THE HUGE CARGO SPACE BUT THIS TRUCK PROVES OTHERWISE.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE JULY/AUGUST 2017 27

The 5-speed transmission did its job very well; the gear changes were smooth and easy. If you want to have some fun then put it in 2X4 and floor the accelerator and the rear will come loose! But be careful while attempting this because it can go out of control real fast! When driving this truck you hardly have to worry about it scraping its underbody because it will go over bumps like there was nothing there. The steering felt really light while driving which made it really easy to maneuver such a large vehicle and at times you tend to forget the size of this massive truck. But when you have to do a U-turn from a complete stop then you really have to fight the steering wheel and use you upper body strength. The rear suspension duty is taken care by leaf spring suspension, this suspensions main objective is to carry heavy loads so the ride might be a little bumpy when the rear is not loaded.

THE VERDICT:

If you are someone who likes to live the adventurous life, going on camping trips and what not with family and friends or just an outright 4X4 fanatic who loves to kick some dirt up then this trunk will tick all of the boxes for you. The light steering makes it easier to drive around town, but you get stuck in heavy stop and go traffic then it might prove to be a challenge. The starting price of the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross is Rs.64.9 Lakhs which is a cheaper than its competition to which we think this might give the others a run for their money.

MY AUTOLIFE WITH

Kishor Maharjan

OFFICER - SHOWROOM SALES, GO AUTOMOBILES PVT. LTD W O R D S

&

P H O T O S

:

A L

T E A M

Each one of us is an automobile enthusiast one way or the other. Perhaps you had someone in your family who owned a motorcycle or you grew up with some who shared the similar passion. For Kishor Maharjan, it was his elder brother who helped fuel his passion towards automobiles. A passionate rider and an avid helmet collector himself, Kishor makes sure he rides regularly to new places when not selling cars. DO YOU REMEMBER HOW YOUR OBSESSION WITH AUTOMOBILES BEGAN? Much like most automobile enthusiasts actually. Growing up, my elder brother and I loved anything with wheels and engines. We would be glued to the television each time anything related to motorsports came on. The Internet wasn’t as userfriendly so the television was all we had for our portal to the rest of the motoring world. What I picked up as a kid stuck with me; automobiles became an obsession. As soon as I completed my education, I started searching for that one work which meets my passion and takes me one step closer to automobiles. And that is what I have been doing for the last 9 years. SO IS IT BIKES OR CARS THAT EXCITE YOU THE MOST? WHY? I love cars, but motorcycles are what have my heart. I feel

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

bikes are the tools for internal peace. The amount of precision and technique that is required to operate a bike to its fullest potential is greater than what is required to operate a car. It’s like they say, four wheels move your body, two wheels move your soul. WHAT IS PARKED IN YOUR GARAGE AT THE MOMENT? Currently I own a 2015 KTM DUKE 390. WE SEE THAT YOU HAVE AN IMPRESSIVE COLLECTION OF HELMETS. TELL US MORE ABOUT IT. Yes, I have a few to show off. Actually my obsession began with Valentino Rossi. He used different helmets with changing graphics every season or on his home races. That led me to start my collection. Right now I have a Limited Edition AGV CORSA WISH graphic helmet, which was

worn by Valentino Rossi at his home Misano back in 2013 as a tribute to his late friend Marco Simoncelli. Only 3000 units are produced worldwide and there are only 2 of these in Nepal. I also have an AGV K3 SV Marco Simoncelli graphic, which I wear for my daily commuting. And my brother gave me a SHARK SKWL. There is more on the way that will tick off more from my bucket list, courtesy of my big brother. HOW DID YOU FIRST LEARN TO RIDE/DRIVE AND WHICH IS THE FIRST CAR/BIKE YOU HAD A GO ON? Learning has always been a struggle for me as my generation was not so lucky to have gained access to 2 or 4 wheelers in early ages. The eagerness to learn was always there, but I didn’t have a vehicle to learn on. So I had to steal a quick ride from some of my relative’s bikes or sometimes my dad’s bike. Eventually, I had

AUTOLIFE JULY/AUGUST 2017 31

my first go on a Bajaj Pulsar. SOMETHING THAT YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO DO ON A SET OF WHEELS? I really would like to join the California Super Bike School and improve my set of skills on a proper track. ONE WICKED OR CRAZY THING THAT YOU HAVE DONE ON WHEELS? Back in 2015, I got an opportunity to have an actual track day in Bira Circuit (Pattaya) thanks to Ford Thailand. I was lucky enough to get my hand on a 2015 Ford Focus with a 1.0L Ecoboost engine with which I was able to burn the lap time on every single lap. Also I was given a crash course on drifting. WHERE DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST DESTINATION TO DRIVE/RIDE TO IN NEPAL? In my opinion, it has to be the BP highway. This would be the best destination for a proper, relaxing and adrenaline pumping drive/ride. The scenery of nature and the technicality of the road brings out the best in you. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS THE WORST THING ABOUT DRIVING/RIDING IN NEPAL AND WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST? Seeing the current scenario, the dust, the potholes and all the unmanaged traffic conditions are the absolute worst. If only our respected government would work towards fixing these problems. Proper black tops as well as clean roads not only result in cleaner environment, but it will also ensure a longer life of the vehicles that we use. Proper roads will lead to decrease in road accidents as well as less traffic issues. IS THERE STILL AN ULTIMATE DREAM CAR/BIKE THAT YOU’D LIKE TO HAVE PARKED IN YOUR GARAGE? In fact, I do. Since it was reintroduced in 2011 with more upgrades, the Triumph Daytona 675R has always captured my eyes, and I would love to own it someday.

32

AUTOLIFE JULY/AUGUST 2017

IF YOU COULD WISH FOR ONE AUTOMOBILE MARQUEE TO HAVE A SHOWROOM HERE IN NEPAL, NOT YET PRESENT, WHICH WOULD IT BE? I have always been fascinated by four wheelers but have always been drawn to two wheelers. I would love to see a Triumph showroom in Nepal. With its array of various models from café racers to bobbers to nakeds to super sports, that’s something to drool over. IF YOU WERE GIVEN COMPLETE CONTROL OF THE COUNTRY, WHAT CHANGES WOULD YOU BRING ABOUT IN THE AUTOMOTIVE SCENE OF NEPAL? Automobiles in Nepal are stupidly expensive and to my surprise everyone seems to be silent about it. The first and the best thing would be to revise all the unwanted duties and come up with more suitable, sustainable and reasonable duties for the automotive sector. Secondly improve the road conditions and make a giant auto hub, where all the automobiles manufactures can be located at one place ; where every auto hub has its own test drive route, where a buyer does not have to go to different places to search for different models of automobiles. YOUR MESSAGE OR WORD OF ADVICE TO FELLOW AUTO ENTHUSIASTS IN THE COUNTRY. I would like to request each and every person riding or driving to be more cautious as well as be safe while on the road. Also, I would like to urge every rider to invest on proper riding gear and wear them while riding. Nowadays, we see lots of new and improved helmets and riding gear manufactures introducing new and budget friendly gears. No matter how perfect you think your set of riding skills are on the streets or even on the outskirts of Kathmandu, believe me it’s not enough. While riding, be aware of the pedestrians and the road signs. Remember, you’re not the only one who uses the road. And a humble request to all the riders, stop riding your bike like a maniac. It’s a road not a track.

OWNER’S REVIEW

I have always been an admirer of Tata Motors. I drove the Nano for the last 5 years before making the switch to Tiago. My wife and I were really awe-struck with the dynamic hatchback Tiago from the moment we drove the car, hence, we decided to upgrade without thinking much. It’s been only 3 months since we have purchased the fantastico Tiago, and we must say that we are very happy with our purchase. We brought home the cool Tiago on the last day of B.S2073 so that we could celebrate the Nepali New Year in style and we did so with the dynamic hatchback. The attractive ‘striker blue’ color option is truly a head-turner on the road. With its class leading features and cutting edge design, the Tiago truly offers a great value for a contemporary, young car. The stylish design is further complemented by enhanced performance and driving dynamics. The interior is spacious and very comfortable. Similarly, the infotainment system provides an excellent connectivity option. We are also delighted that our car returns an impressive mileage. Talking about the driving dynamics, we are satisfied with the supple ride quality and suspension setup. Although we haven’t taken the Tiago to places outside the valley, we are planning to do short trips soon. To conclude, I must say that I am very happy with the Tiago and I would definitely recommend the fantastic Tiago to anyone wanting to buy a new hatchback.

IN CONVERSATION WITH

MAHESH KUMAR M., GENERAL MANAGER - UTS Toyota has always been a front runner in leading the automobile segment in Nepal with a focused approach towards enhancing customer experience, along with launching a slew of new products in varied vehicle segments. And with the recent introduction of allnew Fortuner and Innova Crysta, Mahesh Kumar M, General Manager-United Traders Syndicate Pvt. Ltd (Sole authorized distributor of Toyota vehicles in Nepal) believes, Toyota will further up its ante in its respective segments in Nepal. Excerpts:

T

WHAT IS ONE UNIQUE DNA THAT TOYOTA STANDS FOR, ALWAYS? Toyota’s wide spread popularity is its testimony to the fact that its vehicles are an epitome of Quality, Durability & Reliability and this has always been rooted in its DNA. WHAT IS THE BRAND POSITIONING OF THE TWO NEW MODELS THAT TOYOTA HAS LAUNCHED – THE ALL NEW FORTUNER AND THE INNOVA CRYSTA? ARE THEY AIMED AT FIRST-TIME BUYERS? We have always positioned our products as per the demands of the market and we would like to thank our customers for placing their faith in the brand and the product. Ever since its launch in Nepal, the Fortuner has done exceptionally well and has been a leader in its segment. However, with the changing demands of the market, we felt it was necessary to meet the expectations of the newage customers. We believe the all new Fortuner with its Reinforced Toughness, Stylish Exterior Features, Luxurious Interiors and an array of Safety & Security Features will help cement our position in the top slot in the competitive SUV segment.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Likewise, with the Innova Crysta, we are looking at the MUV segment. Although the MUV segment is still at a nascent stage, we want to cater to those customers who like to own a MUV. The Innova Crysta is the no.1 MPV in our neighbouring country and often referred to as the segment creator. A perfect combination of flawless luxury and effortless power, the Innova Crysta is designed to offer sport-utility inspired styling, robust engine and well-thought out features. WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE KEY FACTORS FOR TOYOTA NEPAL GETTING MORE CONFIDENT ABOUT THE NEPALESE MARKET AND INTRODUCING MANY OF ITS GLOBAL OFFERINGS HERE? HAS TOYOTA REACHED A VOLUME IN SUVS THAT IS A TIPPING POINT? Yes, Toyota Nepal has introduced many of its global offerings in the Nepalese market. However, it’s about meeting the needs and demands of the market with the right product rather than being more confident. Due to the lack of proper road infrastructures, people in Nepal generally prefer SUVs as these vehicles can almost take you anywhere. We do not think that the SUV volume in Nepal has reached a tipping point; it is still at a developing point. We believe

that the continuous market development will result to an increase in the overall demand of SUVs in the coming days. COMING TO TOYOTA’S STRATEGY IN NEPAL, DO YOU FEEL RATTLED WITH OTHER PLAYERS LIKE MERCEDES-BENZ, HYUNDAI AND THE LIKES DOING EXCEPTIONALLY WELL IN THE SUV SEGMENT? In terms of the SUV segment, we have always proved our mettle with our world-class products as our vehicles truly reflect our principles of quality, durability and reliability. We have been widely accepted and rated by customers regarding our service and spare parts availability. It’s not only about owning a luxury SUV or vehicle but also about the overall customer experience you get while owning a brand. For example, just imagine owning a premium vehicle and the service is not up to the standard, wouldn’t that be a hassle? Well, we here at Toyota Nepal, provide the overall best customer experience and we still plan to continue improving this experience to our clients. WHAT ARE THE KEY OBJECTIVES THAT YOU SET OUT TO ACHIEVE THIS NEW FISCAL YEAR? Looking at the overall market situation and financial scenario, we have understood and researched what actually the market needs and requirements are. Hence, we have accordingly set our strategies to reach these objectives. LASTLY, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE TO DATE IN YOUR CURRENT ROLE? Well, talking about the challenges, my biggest one till date was to achieve a 4-digit sales figure which we did in 2016, which was followed by an improvement in the overall operation. Another hurdle was to maintaining an excellent customers experience while retaining 90% of our customers. Even though I did face other challenges in this market, I have been able to carry out my plans and goals with a capable team. AUTOLIFE JULY/AUGUST 2017 35

Big game hunting is historically associated with the hunting of Africa’s “big five” games the lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros, along with tigers and rhinoceroses on the Indian subcontinent. While hunting of big game for food is an ancient practice dating back thousands of years, mankind did what we do best and turned it into a disgusting atrocity fueled by the bloodlust of innocent animals. We’ve never condoned this heinous act of cruelty and we never will. That doesn’t mean we don’t have our eye for big game. The prowling beauties we fancy are powered by fossil fuel, run on four wheels, pack a punch under the hood, and goes vroom-vroom. If it isn’t already obvious, we’re talking about cars and in the Nepalese automobile

industry the big games are most definitely the SUVs. Burly, and capable of tackling rough terrain these massive beasts have been the sought after vehicles of most auto-enthusiasts. Not surprisingly, at the forefront of the competition is Toyota. A position the Japanese manufacturers established decades ago, and one it isn’t willing to relinquish anytime soon. To maintain their claim to the throne Toyota have brought in the newest iteration of one of their most popular offerings: the Fortuner. A newer modern version that looks ready to dominate the segment, the Toyota Fortuner could very well be amongst the king of the beasts. And the lucky buggers that we are, we got to have a go at this animal. Read on to find the outcome of our day with this predator.

EXTERIOR

Replacing the designs of the previous model is a more contemporary styling. It gets slim wraparound headlights that side both ends of a triple slated chrome grille where the Toyota logo sits smack dab in the middle. There is a more aerodynamic styling and the bonnet is sans of the air scoop. Toyota has also given the car automatic self-levelling bi-beam LED projector headlamps, LED daytime running lights, LED tail-lamps and 18” alloy wheels (4WD).

Based on the Hilux pickup truck, the 2nd-gen Fortuner continues with a tough body-on-frame construction like the old car and uses the same ‘Toyota New Generation Architecture’ that underpins the Innova Crysta. The car measures 4,795 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width and 1,835 mm in height and with a combination of the other features, it provides the Fortuner massive presence. Around back, sleek wraparound taillights sweep into the profile and are connected with a chrome strip bearing the Fortuner nametag. Bulging out fenders and massive wheels provide the Toyota Fortuner a muscular appeal. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE JULY/AUGUST 2017 37

SAFETY

In terms of safety, the Fortuner is equipped with seven airbags, 3-point seatbelts for all occupants, ABS + EBD, ISOFIX child seat mounts, traction control, vehicle stability control, brake assist, hill assist control and downhill assist control. The car has scored a 5-star rating in the Latin NCAP and ANCAP crash tests.

INTERIORS

The interiors of the Fortuner also receive updates that modernize the vehicle compared to its predecessor. They’ve gone with a black and brown colour theme, with silver and piano-black inserts at various places. Fit and finish along with the quality of the materials used is what you’d expect to see in a premium offering like this. Leather-wrapped steering with thumb contours is chunky and nice to hold. It has a wooden insert at the top (which offers sufficient grip) and a silver insert on the lower spokes. Silver paddle shifters it on either sides of the steering wheel. Instrument cluster consists of a large tachometer on the left, speedometer on the right and analogue temperature + fuel gauges in them respectively. While the numbers are backlit in white, the needles are backlit in blue. The readability of this instrument cluster is very good, even under direct sunlight. Has two vertical blue lines for effect. It also gets a well-sized TFT colour MID which shows the various information like temperature, real time & average fuel economy, distance to empty counter and average speed. The center console gets climate control and a touchscreen infotainment system. The Fortuner gets two glove boxes. The upper glove box, which opens when you press the Fortuner engraved button, is wide and shallow and also gets cooling functionality.

AROUND BACK, SLEEK WRAPAROUND TAILLIGHTS SWEEP INTO THE PROFILE AND ARE CONNECTED WITH A CHROME STRIP BEARING THE FORTUNER NAMETAG As you’d expect, it is a pretty spacious affair in the Fortuner. Front seats are wide and comfortable and they get 8 way electric adjustment. The Fortuner is only available in a 7-seater configuration. The middle row is a 60:40 splitting bench seat that is large enough to accommodate 3 adults. Leather upholstery is identical to the front seats. Thankfully, there is plenty of legroom. To get into the third row is a breeze with a flip and tumble operation. Toyota calls this ‘one-touch access’. You have to fold & push the seat forward together. If you don’t push, only the backrest will fold down (without the seat tumbling forward).

PERFORMANCE

The beast that we had on our hands had a 2.8L mill beating under the hood; in numbers that comes out to be 175 BHP (@ 3,400 rpm) and 450 Nm of peak torque. This, mated with a six-speed transmission makes for a splendid driving experience. Toyota has equipped the Fortuner with an economy and power mode which you can switch between via a push of a button to get out of the normal mode. Press the ECO button on the center console and you’ll immediately see the air-con blower’s level drop down a notch. The climate control works less harder in ECO mode - it still cools the cabin sufficiently though. Power delivery is also lower, with the throttle response dulled a bit. However, it still remains very useable thanks to its large engine capacity. It doesn’t feel sluggish at all and there is more than enough grunt on tap. Engage PWR mode and it’s a different animal. The throttle response is sharper and the Fortuner exhibits a totally different vigor. The engine is very, very responsive facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

in this driving mode. Acceleration times also noticeably improve. Also, the air-con blower level comes back up if you’re switching from eco to power mode. The automatic transmission is satisfactory and doesn’t leave room for complaints. Moving from a standstill is smooth and seamless and this carries on as you drive. The transmission’s creep makes the Fortuner crawl at 8-9 km/h (without accelerator input) and you can drive with just your foot on the brake pedal through bottlenecks. Peak torque is developed early @ 1,600 rpm, thus there’s very little lag to speak of in the AT. On the open road you will not be left craving for power as the big engine really does come to life. This is when you might want to switch to the paddle shifters. Manual mode is engaged by either putting the gear shifter in S mode or by using the paddle shifters located behind the steering wheel. These paddle shifters are of good quality and very well placed, making them convenient to operate. The massive dead pedals are very useful and comfortable.

smarter distribution of torque through all wheels. The HAC (Hill Assist Control) and DAC (Downhill Assist Control) help with ascents and descents. However, fitting the 4x4 with an H/T (Highway Terrain) tyres was a quirky decision. Regardless, you can shift from RWD to 4x4 even on the move, upto 100 km/h.

Double wishbone suspension up front does a great job of soaking up road undulations and when you leave the tarmac. Ventilated disc brakes are installed on all four wheels too.

Overall the ride and handling is exquisite, even for an SUV as big as this. The suspension is set up on the firmer side and that helps its highway ride quality. The body roll is also better controlled.

Also, the new Fortuner gets part time 4x4, which gives it 2WD for tarmac usage, and 4WD is strictly for slippery conditions. With plenty of ground clearance the Fortuner is every bit ready to get down and dirty.

VERDICT

Furthermore, you get a host of fancy electronics and wizardry to help you along the way. The Active Traction Control provides helps to avoid wheel spins on starts, controls skidding, and provides

The new Toyota Fortuner carries on the legacy of the SUVs and proves itself worthy of being one of the most coveted vehicles in the market. However, it does come with a hefty price tag. But you can’t really expect much less when you’re hunting big game.

AUTOLIFE FEATURE

CHECK AS MANY DEALERSHIPS AS POSSIBLE: Visit all the dealers in your area for their best deal on your second-hand car of choice. Make a note of the best price, and ask others to beat it. You can always go back to your local dealer to ask if they’ll match the best offer. They might be keen for your cash, and happy to offer the same deal. WORD OF MOUTH: Don’t underestimate the value of letting your friends and colleagues know you’re looking for a used car. You may find someone who wants to sell their mintcondition car to the right buyer. CREATE A LIST OF USED CARS: If you’re looking to save money, consider more than one brand. We suggest making a list of three cars that meet your needs and fall within your budget. If you’re sticking to a tight budget, you may want to spend even less. Used cars will need a little extra attention from time to time: new tires, maintenance and the like. And then there are the other ownership costs shoppers sometimes forget to account for, such as fuel and insurance. The older and cheaper the car, the more likely there will be something wrong, particularly once it’s done more than 100,000km. PETROL OR DIESEL/MANUAL OR AUTOMATIC: Diesel engines are often more economical than their petrol counterparts. But don’t be fooled into

42

AUTOLIFE JULY/AUGUST 2017

thinking this definitely makes diesel a better option. These cars are more expensive, and they usually cost expensive to maintain. Similarly, manual cars are cheaper than automatic. Switching between gears is extra work - particularly to those of us prone to stalling at traffic lights. Yet while automatics take some of the hassle out of driving, they come with a higher price tag. SMALL ENGINE OR BIG ENGINE: Smaller engines can be cheaper. The choice of a 1.0-litre or a 2.0-litre engine isn’t just about pure horsepower. A large engine will usually burn more fuel than a smaller one. So engine size is a vital consideration if fuel economy is an important factor in your decision. Of course, this depends on how you use the car. A small engine is most efficient when it’s used as intended, such as to drive around town. If a small engine is used a high speed, it’ll need to work much harder to keep the car moving burning more fuel. CHECK THE CAR’S MILEAGE: The average covered is around 10,000 miles a year, so if the odometer’s figure appears wildly out for its age, ask why. If the answer doesn’t stack up, be suspicious. Crooks may have ‘clocked’ the odometer. You can also check the last service for the mileage to see if this is in line with the figure. CHECK THE EXTERIOR: Get a professional inspection

Always insist on having a full professional inspection before buying any used car. Most second hand shops will perform these inspections. If professional inspection is not available, take your time and carefully examine everything you want to look at – not just what the seller shows you Inspect the car on a sunny day if possible – it’s easier to see the visual clues to the car’s real condition. Inspection tips: • cast a beady eye over the car’s overall exterior condition, crouching down to look for scratches and dents • see if there are any signs of poor repair, such as gaps between body panels after crash damage • get a torch to look under the bonnet • check the oil by lifting out the dipstick to see if the level’s correct • Look at the engine for signs of oil or water leaks, as well as the surrounding parts – and look under the car for any signs of leaks too. • Look for bubbling paintwork. Also, look for rust on the car body, on weight-bearing parts, steering wheel mountings, under carpets, the bootliner, in the spare tyre area and inside the petrol cap door. • Check all the tyres, including the spare. Treads must be at least 1.5mm deep across 3/4 of the tread pattern around the entire tyre. However, if there are tread depth indicators the tread depth must be at least 1.5 mm in these areas. • Check the exhaust for leaks. Look for

Buying a used car can be a hassle. From picking up the right vehicle to getting inspections and finalising the deal is a tiresome process. As with any purchase, you have to do your homework when you’re buying used. Here are our top ten tips for helping you buy the right vehicle:

TIPS TO BUYING A USED CAR

soft areas, brittle areas or areas where putty is used • Check for worn shock absorbers. CHECK THE INTERIOR: Once the exterior inspection is done, it’s time to check the interior. Can the seat slide, rise and tilt? Can you adjust the steering wheel position? Can you see all the mirrors and through the windows? Can you reach the pedals, gear stick and handbrake? Things to check: • Push, pull or twist all dashboard switches and knobs to check they work. • Have someone outside the car check that all lights and indicators work, including the brake lights. • Try the wipers, the radio, the levers for opening the boot and bonnet. • Can you adjust the mirrors? • Also check for old or loose wiring under the dashboard. • Check the seats and safety belts. Look for possible damage under seat covers, if fitted. Check if all seats are properly secured to the floor, all seats have safety belts, the safety belts’ buckle and retractor mechanisms work and all belts lock up tightly when suddenly pulled. TEST-DRIVE THE VEHICLE: Test-driving a used car is the best way to assess the particular car’s condition. So tune out distractions and focus on the car. Here are some things to check: Once you’re in the car, switch on the ignition, but don’t start the engine. Check if the warning lights go on. If they don’t, there may be a fault. Similarly, the oil facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

and coolant level lights go off after a few seconds. Also, the handbrake light goes off when the brake is released. Any antilock braking system (ABS) or airbags lights (SRS) will have their own testing sequence. Check the vehicle’s manual to see what this should be. Start the engine, with the engine cold if possible. After starting the engine, take a careful note of these factors: • the starter motor turns over quickly and the motor ‘catches’ quickly • there are no odd noises like backfires or a rattling exhaust • the oil pressure light goes off after the car has been running for a few seconds • there’s no blue smoke coming from the exhaust. While you drive, listen for any odd noises that could indicate problems: • clanging or clunking noises when starting and stopping could mean problems with engine mountings, exhaust, suspension, transmission or the drive shaft • tapping or knocking noises could be from a failing rod bearing, piston or piston pin • grinding or whining can mean worn gears or bearings – these are expensive repairs • squealing noises when you brake may mean new brake pads or linings are needed.

Put on the brakes firmly, but don’t slam them. The car should slow down quickly and in a straight line. Test out the vehicle’s gears: • Can you change the gears easily and smoothly? • Try changing down quickly a few times - is there a crunching noise? The gearbox may need work. • If the car’s an automatic, do the gears change smoothly? Unexpected changes or bumping noises aren’t good. • Is the transmission oil clear red? A burnt smell indicates problems. NEGOTIATE A GOOD DEAL & GET THE PAPERWORK DONE: Negotiating a deal doesn’t have to be a drawn-out, weary experience. If you are reasonable and have a plan, chances are you can make a deal pretty quickly and easily. After closing the deal, get all the necessary paperwork done. Check with the seller for vehicle tax and insurance payments.

Brake and gear tests: Find a quiet stretch of road and try an emergency stop, from about 30km/h. AUTOLIFE JULY/AUGUST 2017 43

Capturing life from behind the lens has become a way of life for some of the upcoming video bloggers in Nepal. YouTube has become the ultimate platform for people to share their lives with the world through videos. Amongst this growing crowd, a few have dedicated themselves to showcasing their passion of automobiles. Moto-vlogging has become a popular trend and it has been undertaken by a few as a means of expressing their love for automobiles. We have with us Anubhav, Ujjzal D. HOW DID YOU GET INTO MOTOVLOGGING? I have always been an avid traveler. However, due to my hectic full-time job, my travelling goals were not satiated. Hence, I decided to create a motovlogging cum a travel channel in YouTube. After uploading a couple of videos, I was very contented by the fact that I was creating a community that knew me. In the meantime, I started travelling so that I could atleast upload one video per week.

UJJZAL D. SHRESTHA HOW DID YOU GET INTO MOTOVLOGGING? Vloggers like Casey Neistat and other international motovloggers like Max Wrist and Royal Jordanian etc. motivated me to start my own motovlogging channel. I also used to watch a lot of travel vlogs by different YouTubers just to get a gist for my own videos. HOW DID YOU COME BY YOUR RIDER NAME? Well, I’m a serious motorcycle enthusiast. Riding provides me that ‘adrenaline kick’ and I need it to complete my day. Hence, I came up with the name ‘DoseOfRide’ which translates to this passion. WHICH BIKE DO YOU OWN/ RIDE? I own a TVS Apache RTR 200 4V. WHAT TYPE OF EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE TO PRODUCE YOUR VIDEOS? I use an affordable action camera called SJCAM 4000 which you can buy for around 14K. And recently, I have started using Canon 1300D to produce better content. HOW MUCH PLANNING GOES INTO EACH MOTOVLOG? Not much! I just think about the concept of video and go with the flow. WHEN WAS THE FIRST TIME YOU REALLY FELT YOU WERE

50

AUTOLIFE JULY/AUGUST 2017

GETTING SOMEWHERE WITH IT? Well, I felt that I was achieving something when other riders started recognizing me on the streets while riding and telling me what they love about my videos and stuffs. These things motivated me to produce better content everyday. WHAT IS THE MOST EXCITING PART OF MOTOVLOGGING? AND THE CHALLENGES TOO. The most exciting thing about motovlogging is that you can virtually take thousands of people on a ride with you and let them experience different places. The challenges are once you reach a certain point of audience you’ll have to keep uploading more videos to make them satisfied which can be difficult.

HOW DID YOU COME BY YOUR RIDER NAME? Well, my nickname was NIK since I was a kid. At first, I wanted to name my YouTube channel to only ‘NIK’ but the online platform didn’t let me. So, I decided to go for “NIK TV” instead. WHICH BIKE DO YOU OWN/ RIDE? I own a Yamaha FZs V2. WHAT TYPE OF EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE TO PRODUCE YOUR VIDEOS? I use a GoPro Hero 4 silver which is mounted on my helmet, and a canon G7x for lifestyle vlogging and some cinematic shots. HOW MUCH PLANNING GOES INTO EACH MOTOVLOG? I don’t do a lot of planning for my vlogs. I usually think of a title (whether it’s a motovlog or a normal one),

then I start recording and go with the momentum. WHEN WAS THE FIRST TIME YOU REALLY FELT YOU WERE GETTING SOMEWHERE WITH IT? Back in those days, when I started doing motovlogs, the Nepalese motovlogging scene was still at an early stage with less subscribers and opportunities. But, after constantly uploading videos for six months, I noticed a gradual increase in my subscribers and people started recognizing me. It’s really fun to meet your subscribers in reality and get motivated. WHAT IS THE MOST EXCITING PART OF MOTOVLOGGING? AND THE CHALLENGES TOO. The most exciting part of motovlogging is that you are sharing your ride and ideas with a huge audience, and they are enjoying watching that as well. The major challenge has to be the constant uploads as editing one single video takes a lot of time and energy. HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THE TROLLS? I simply delete it. ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO GET INTO MOTOVLOGGING? Be awesome, upload consistently and make sure your viewers appreciate watching your videos.

SUMAN LAMA

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THE TROLLS? Ummmm… I just take it as an insulting compliment and sometimes the trolls are educating enough which helps me to improve my video concept and make it awesome for people to watch. If the trolls are not meaningful then I just shake it off! ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO GET INTO MOTOVLOGGING? Be yourself, be active & be awesome. Make wonderful videos that viewers/ subscribers will appreciate watching. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE JULY/AUGUST 2017 51

HOW DID YOU START MOTOVLOGGING? I love riding. In the meantime, I stumbled upon some Indian motovloggers and thought why not give it a try. I started creating contents and hence, my motovlogging journey started. The benefit of YouTube is that apart from being a free platform to upload videos, it’s also an effective medium to engage people to ride and explore. HOW DID YOU COME BY YOUR RIDER NAME? When I started out, there were only a handful of motovloggers in the country. So, I decided why not to use the name ‘Ride Nepal’ as people will notice both my videos and my country. And I guess I made the right decision.

ANUBHAV HOW DID YOU GET INTO MOTOVLOGGING? I always wanted to make motovlogs but I didn’t start any effort to start one. However, on January 2017, after buying a GoPro Hero5 black ,I thought of making one and here I am now! HOW DID YOU COME BY YOUR RIDER NAME? As I am addicted to “Pinterest”, I stumbled upon a photo which had a meaning of the word ‘Orphic’. Orphic means mysterious or beyond ordinary understanding and this sounded quite interesting to me. So I decided to name my motovlogging channel as ‘Orphic’. During my childhood days, I always used to keep the word ‘mysterious’ in front of my surname because it sounded cool in my head. Hence, I decided to adopt the word ‘Orphic rider’ which was later shortened to ‘Orhpic R’. WHICH BIKE DO YOU OWN/ RIDE? I own a 2016 KTM Duke 200 WHAT TYPE OF EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE TO PRODUCE YOUR VIDEOS? I use a GoPro hero 5 black, a Canon EOS 700d, and two tripods. I use Sony Vegas pro 13 to edit my videos.

I won’t say a lot because I try to picture the whole vlog even before the recording takes place. This is the reason my vlogs do not require a lot of planning. WHEN WAS THE FIRST TIME YOU REALLY FELT YOU WERE GETTING SOMEWHERE WITH IT? When I met one of my subscribers after vlogging, I thought this was it and hence, I proceeded ahead. WHAT IS THE MOST EXCITING PART OF MOTOVLOGGING? AND THE CHALLENGES TOO. The most exciting and challenging part of motovlogging is that you will have no idea if your viewers will enjoy your video or not.

WHICH BIKE DO YOU OWN/ RIDE? Currently I own a Honda CBR250R. The best part of this bike is that it’s very comfortable and stable. Despite of the full fairing, the CBR250R is very comfortable for long rides too. WHAT TYPE OF EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE TO PRODUCE YOUR VIDEOS? I have a GoPro Silver 4 and DJI Phantom 3 drone along with my phone. I use the GoPro to shoot almost all of my videos. Similarly, I use the drone to shoot aerial footages and phone when it’s not possible to use GoPro.

HOW MUCH PLANNING GOES INTO EACH VLOG? Planning goes only for the editing part as I need to decide how I should present my video to my audiences. Usually I don’t plan while shooting the videos. WHEN WAS THE FIRST TIME YOU REALLY FELT YOU WERE GETTING SOMEWHERE WITH IT? I usually get positive comments from people. But when I was invited by a reputed media house for a feature on their magazine, I decided I should focus more on vlogs now. WHAT IS THE MOST EXCITING PART OF MOTOVLOGGING? AND THE CHALLENGES TOO. The most exciting part is that you get an opportunity to showcase your travels and the challenge has to be the presentation of the vlogs. HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THE TROLLS? Initially it was hard, but now I am use to dealing with trolls. I ignore the negative stuffs and try to focus on the positive things to make better content. ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO GET INTO MOTOVLOGGING? Simply mounting the camera on your helmet won’t make you a motovlogger. You should constantly learn and spread positive awareness.

AMIT SHRESTHA

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THE TROLLS? Sometimes I reply them with a little bit of sarcasm. But mostly I just delete those comments and hide their comments. ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO GET INTO MOTOVLOGGING? Just do what your heart says and make good content videos because it’s all about the content. Last but not the least this world is a mean place so be prepared for that.

HOW MUCH PLANNING GOES INTO EACH VLOG?

Owner’s Review I have had the new Skoda Rapid for about 2 months now and before this I used to have a Honda City. Also, I currently drive the Mazda 3 as well. We were planning on getting a new car and then we saw the new Skoda Rapid in a paper advertisement. We went to check it out at the showroom and we loved it so we decided it there and then.

I liked the performance of the marketing staff at Skoda. The performance of the Rapid is decent and it proved to be a very good investment as it fits in our budget and also it is the right size for our family. The rapid is very spacious and also the interior is appealing and looks very comfortable. The exterior is very stylish I also like that Skoda Rapid provides a very good mileage range although I am not very much into the technical aspects, driving it has an appeal. In the case of long drives I haven’t taken it to long drives but we plan to do so. Yes, I definitely would be happy to recommend the new Skoda Rapid to my friends as well because they are also impressed by Skoda Rapid, at least at this point of time because about the long term we still have time to judge. This car represents durability and a feeling of security.

I used to drive a Kia Pride before the Punto Pure. I chose the Punto Pure because of its Italian roots. The design is different as compared to other cars. It has an attractive look and it is quite noticeable on the street. The cabin-room is also sufficient. It is spacious and above average as compared to other Indian cars at similar price range.

The suspension system soaks up the bumps pretty well. The Punto Pure has sufficient ground clearance to tackle our roads. I have not yet taken the Punto Pure for long drives but I have taken the car to quite a few off-road sections. I found the performance and suspension to be decent. Everything aside, I am very satisfied with the service-centre professional. They seem to have done a great job with my car. To conclude, I would definitely recommend the Punto Pure to anyone looking to buy a new hatchback.

THE STORY OF

HELMETS NEPAL

B

Being an entrepreneur is hard; it is tough to start something from the ground up. Being a young entrepreneur is even harder. With significantly less experience and small ideas, the entrepreneurial journey of young people is usually fraught with a couple of difficulties. Besides, they are also subjected to certain social attitudes and stereotypes that make it even more difficult to be successful. However, many of today’s young entrepreneurs are trying to change this notion by overcoming these odds. Such is a pair of Prarthana Sakha and Sajal Pradhan, the founders of Helmets Nepal. Helmets Nepal has been making its rounds in the local motorcycle community for quite some time now with a reputation for offering customers a one-stop-solution for genuine motorcycle helmets and accessories at reasonable pricing. To know more about their story, we caught up these young guns in a short tête-àtête. Excerpts:

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

WE TOOK THE LEAP OF FAITH AND FACED IT WITH OUR INEXPERIENCE, LOW RESOURCES AND TIME CONSTRAINTS. BUT OUR DETERMINATION, PERSEVERANCE AND VISION KEPT US GOING. THIS IS HOW HELMETS NEPAL STARTED. HOW DID YOU GET YOUR IDEA OR CONCEPT FOR HELMETS NEPAL? WAS THAT PASSION AND SKILL SET SOMETHING THAT SURFACED LATER IN LIFE? As business students, we wanted to do something in this sector. That’s when entrepreneurship fascinated us. We were looking for an opportunity where we could probably create a lasting impact. A small incident triggered us to get into the automobile industry. We realized that the after-sales industry failed to reach motorbike riders in many aspects and we knew something could be done to fill this market gap. But, we fell short on the capital and lack of support from our wellwishers as we were just students. However, these challenges made us more determined to make it happen. We took the leap of faith and faced it with our inexperience, low resources and time constraints. But our determination, perseverance and vision kept us going. This is how Helmets Nepal started. It was our platform to learn, grow and make a difference. WHAT WAS YOUR MISSION AT THE OUTSET? When we first started, we aimed at providing utmost comfort and convenience to our customers: home delivery, emergency delivery, value for money and many more. But looking in depth, we found out that the problem was not with people lacking time to purchase the product, but it was about people not getting genuine products despite of their willingness to pay for it.

envision for convenience, we are now more focused on making genuine and authorized products available here in Nepal. NOW YOU’VE OPENED A SWANKY NEW STORE, TO WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE YOUR SUCCESS? Instead of being alert all the time about what other competitors might be doing, we were able to think what we can do to increase our service credibility. We researched on the product, the market and the need of the consumers. We figured out that the trend of online sales would not be that suitable. Therefore, to address the need of general customers, we opened our showroom in Maitighar to connect with our customers personally. We designed our showroom in such a way that it combined both aggression and style. Besides, our success would not have been possible without the support from our mentors, teachers and support from our family and friends. We feel grateful that we have been well received by our customers.

Where genuine products can save lives during accidents, more copied products are distributed in the markets. On top of that, deteriorating road conditions and hazardous infrastructures are also equally contributing to road accidents.

WHAT’S YOUR COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE AS COMPARED TO RIVALS? We do face many challenges but we are more focused on what can be done to serve the market better rather than how to overcome our competitors. Our first major disadvantage was not having an online competitor. Had there been any competitor in the same industry, we could have learnt from their mistakes or followed the trends that worked in the market. But, since we are dealing directly with the importers, it is a competitive advantage for us as we can get in touch with the manufacturers directly and share feedbacks and complaints.

Blaming the government about poor roads is useless, but thinking what can be done and actually doing it can be more impactful. Although, we still

We make sure that anyone willing to make a purchase at Helmets Nepal gets a genuine product. Once they are associated with us, they are no AUTOLIFE JULY/AUGUST 2017 57

longer our customer, they become our clients. We are trying to change the notion that Helmets Nepal is not just another helmet shop but a company where we follow organizational guidelines and ensure all relationships are well maintained. WHAT WERE SOME OF THE BIGGEST LESSONS THAT HAVE IMPACTED THE WAY THAT YOU WORK? WHAT WAS THE LESSON, AND WHAT WAS IT LIKE BEFORE AND AFTER? Startups are all about making mistakes and learning. During the initial period, we were focused on achieving our dreams and goals at any cost. Aggression has been one of our biggest learning. We tried to make things good on the surface ignoring the foundation. That’s when we went wrong with our initial idea. Without any proper research and need analysis, we went out to serve the market. After realizing our mistakes, we decided to have a proper planning with clear vision and objectives. Success is uncertain; accepting the failure and learning is the most important thing. IF YOU HAD ONE PIECE OF ADVICE TO SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT YOUNG, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Our advice to someone just starting out would be to consider the process and people rather than just concentrating on the product. Market leaders or big companies may or may not have the best product what they have is the best strategy of selling of these products. Youths are generally considered as rookies in terms of starting a business. We rarely see any industry led by young change makers. But, change is inevitable.

We recently embarked on a short trip to Dolalghat. The skies had cleared up after a pretty gloomy week, and for some strange reason we had this sudden craving for the infamous fried fishes from Dolalghat. Lucky for us, we had the Ford Ecosport Platinum Edition at our disposal. Go Ford Nepal were kind enough to hand us over the keys to the updated Ecosport, and we graciously accepted the opportunity to take it out on the road. So, instead of being cooped up in our office on a workday, we headed towards Dolalghat to get some fresh air. The July heat was sweltering hot, but it was of little bother to us. The Ecosport had more than enough space to accommodate the four inhabitants in its cabin, so we didn’t feel cramped and the air con did a decent job of keeping us cool. We chucked our baggage into the trunk and connected our smartphone

to the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is completely new to the Platinum Edition. Before long, were rocking out to Punjabi pop songs which we are now surprisingly hooked on. Getting the music right is crucial to the quality of any road trip, a responsibility that falls upon the shoulders of the person riding shotgun. Which brings us to our next point, something that is not discussed nearly enough. A road trip is a laid back recreational activity but every passenger has his or her individual duties. First off, the driver is in charge of getting the entire possy to the destination and back safely with as few butt clenching moments as possible. Secondly, the person riding shotgun is in charge of navigating and making sure the music is on point the entire trip. Finally, people in the backseat are in charge of distributing snacks and reminding the driver to make regular bathroom stops. Now that we got that out of the way, let’s get back to our quest for delightful fried fish. “Why were you so adamant on going all the way to Dolalghat for this fish?” you ask. If you are, you clearly haven’t had these scrumptiously fried, local, river caught fishes. As expected, the road conditions were atrocious. Massive potholes littered the tarmac and it seemed like each turn only made things worse. Thankfully, the Ecosport took it in its stride. We were really looking forward to try the new cruise control too, but it wasn’t really possible in the roads that we were traveling. We’ll leave that for when we hit the Terai straights some day, because we were quiet content enjoying the twists and turns on

this day. We were driving the 1.5 TDCi Diesel, which produces about 98.59bhp at 3750rpm, and 205 Nm of torque at 1750rpm to 3250rpm. What that translated to was a whole lot of driving fun. Turns out, the Platinum Edition Ford Ecosport is a joy to drive. The mill churns out enough power to let you climb up the hills with ease; a much-needed asset in any car if you’re looking to drive to any spot outside of the city. And this was the case with our trip. The closer we got to our destination, the more impatient we got. Thankfully, what awaited us at Dolalghat was a sight for sore eyes. We approached

a shabby little eatery, amongst the several that run business in the vicinity, and sharpened our teeth for what was to come. A massive platter of golden fried fishes sat piled next to a wok filled with boiling oil where more fishes were steadily sizzling away. We wasted little time and found us a seat on modest and slightly shaky benches and tables. On one of the walls, a dingy metal fan did its best to cool the air. Posters of gods printed in fluorescent yellow and pink hues adorned the walls, both blackened due from the years of smoke from boiling oil and fish. Agreed, this might not be an ambience that would appeal to everyone, but for anyone with a penchant for authentic local cuisine these factors accentuate the entire experience. We each ordered ourselves a serving of the fried fishes that came on small steel plates that were barely able to contain our beautiful oily treats. Served with a side of well-seasoned tomato pickles we finished our plates at blistering speed. To the delight of the lady at the counter, we continued ordering several more helpings that we devoured in quick succession. When we left, all that was left behind was a pile of fish bones and a wide smile on the shop owner’s face. Satiated with our feast we headed for the Ford Ecosport that would take us back home. However, we were fast approaching rush hour, which inevitably landed us in traffic. We weren’t going to let that bring our spirits down so we took a detour to get ourselves some fresh lassi. The sweet, thick beverage was just what we needed to end our short road trip to Dolalghat. Getting to complete this trip in the Ford Ecosport Platinum edition was an added bonus. We will definitely be looking forward to taking it out on another spin. The Ecosport Platinum Edition for the first time ever gets a completely new 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. This touchscsreen infotainment system gets integrated music and video playback along with satellite navigation system. The screen also doubles up as the rear view camera screen as well. And it did a pretty good job of easing our music sessions too. Here are some of the songs on our playlist during our road trip.

WHY GET A

VOLVO

HINT: THEY INVENTED THE SEAT BELT

The Swedes are kind upon our world. They gave us tall blonde women, Ikea, H&M, Acne Studios, the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Abba to name a few. On thing all of these contributions have in common is that they are aesthetically pleasing, and can stand the test of time. These Scandinavians are also famous for cars of all things. They are the creators of Volvo.

>I

In 1955, road accidents were alarmingly increasing in Sweden. Studied showed that these were mostly by speeding motor accidents, so two concerned engineers from Vattenfall got working on a contraption that would prevent such a death toll. They came up with an idea of safety belts that held back the passengers in the seats during impact. They presented it to Volvo and in 1959, a Swedish inventor named Nils Bohlin perfected the 3 point seat belt we know, love, and sadly don’t use quite enough. Apart from being one of the safest cars, Volvo is synonymous for durability. They even have an exclusive club for Volvo car owners how have clocked in huge milage. These cars can last forever. It’s an added bonus that they look darn good

68

AUTOLIFE JULY/AUGUST 2017

as well. So why should we not bring the Swedes over to Nepal and have a piece of the giant cake they’re making? Here’s a list of 5 reasons just in case. • Volvo cars are efficient. The company has recently developed its own range of Drive-E engines that are not only clever in the way that they save fuel, but also in the way that they’re modular. What this means is that both the petrol and diesel units can be adapted to become hybrids in the future. And the future seems to be coming soon. Volvo has already launched the first of those Drive-E engines with hybrid capability, in the form of the V60 Plug-in Hybrid. With just 48g/km of CO2 and a fuel economy figure of 155.2mpg, this is one of the cheapest-to-run cars currently on the road – something we Nepalese like. And Volvo is planning to go all electric by 2019.

• If you’re looking for a family car, Volvo should be your houshold name. Apart from the “clever” play of words, we should acknowledge that this is the company that invented the rear-facing child seat. Today, they offer booster seats built in. Not much of a need for us Nepalese who let our kids hang in the back and smack ‘em in the forehead if they get a bit razdraz. But it’s good to pamper them. • In recent years, Volvo has added a roll-over protection system, a blind spot information system, a city safety autonomous emergency braking system and pedestrian detection system with auto braking in the last few years. It has also dedicated itself to its Vision 2020 programmes, which pledges that by 2020 no one should be killed or seriously injured in, or by, a new Volvo car. With facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

the roads here being full of… uninformed people, this is an invaluable addition. • You know what’s safe than safe? Intellisafe. That’s the name of the technology they’ve put in and what this does is things like stopping immediately and automatically id a car a person comes in front of the car out of the blue. The police have done a great job but jaywalkers are still at large. So this is vital to keep you safe from the stupidity of others. • I did some research, and by that, I mean I used Google. I searched for “reasons why you should not get a Volvo”, and 7 out of 10 were positive reviews. I think that says a lot about the matter.

With that out of the way, here’s a list of 5 Volvos that we think will do good in the Nepalese market. We know, we know… we do like to spoil you.

XC60: Ever been in deep

mud and in a fix from which you can’t get out, and you just wish you had someone to give you a push? Well, when you have an XC60, you’ll wish to be alone. Paired with it’s all-wheel drive is the Hill Start Assist which arms you to take on any incline. And when you’re done conquering a mountain, the Hill Descent is get you down in one piece. And, nature is beautiful so it can distract you from the road, but it won’t distract the tech that’s in this SUV. It’s that safe, like all Volvos to be honest.

V40: This compact hatchback is perfect for the city. The handling is agile, interiors are hooked up with smart technology, and the versatility makes life easier. The V60 is their cheapest model in our selection, but cheap does not mean it compromises anything. Rather, it’s packed with features that you don’t really need, like Adaptive Cruise Control, Drive-E, and Sensus Connect; but won’t be able to do without after using it. S60: The only adjective suitable for the S60

and everything it stands for is sophisticated: sophisticated suspension, sophisticated steering, sophisticated gearshift paddles, you get the idea. With just a touch of a button, you can toggle the sedan between 3 distinct driving modes depending the terrain, style, and mood; an ideal thing when it comes you our apocalyptic roads.

S90: Think of the S90 as the daddy of S60, and instead of “sophisticated”, use “elegant” because that’s what it is. It incorporates natural materials and top of the line intuitive technology to add to it’s elegance. A common misconception is that sedans like this is just for lounging and cruising around. However, a beast lies in the heart of it, a 4 cylinder petrol engine that lets out 246 horses at the least. The diesel variant lets out 148hp, why the hybrid does 316hp.

XC90: If the word “compromise” is something you loath the existence of, this is the SUV for you. The XC90’s been improved from it’s previous generation to maximize power and minimize carbon footprint. Comfort and Off Road modes are toggleable for your mood and Nepal’s moody terrain. Everything in this car is made to make life easier and driving less stressful. The admirable performance of it aside, the Sensus in it is a state of the art Infotainment system that keeps you connected to the car, solidifying the companionship between you and you beloved car. 70

STC INTRODUCES

B

SHARK HELMETS IN NEPAL

Boosted by over 25 years of experience, the French brand SHARK has become one of the world’s leading helmet makers. Founded by former professional racers, Shark designs helmets that guarantee high levels of performance and safety and that exceed safety standards. Shark’s ethos is always to push the technical boundaries and innovate so that each and every biker and racer can enjoy the sheer pleasure and freedom of riding in complete safety. From its headquarters in Marseille and its own factories, and with over 600 employees, the Research & Innovation division is at the forefront in terms of technology and equipment. Shark uses the best performing software, identical to that used in aerospace; the prototypes are realized from a last generation 3D printer within the company’s laboratory. The end user remains at the heart of the development of its products. Shark creates its models on the principle of “Reverse Engineering”: the helmets are entirely designed from the head of the user; the helmet being constructed around it progressively, gradually adding each function. The product is

RACE-R PRO • An “Optics 1” category flat visor without any visual distortion thanks to a variable thickness (4.2 / 2.8 mm) • Double back spoiler to ensure both aerodynamics and stability at high speed • Optimized visor mechanism featuring notching and quick disassembly Weight: 1250g (Size M+/- 50g)

Ridill

therefore designed with a constant vision of the end user as a guideline, in order to always exceed the most demanding standards and anticipate the needs of motorcyclists. To achieve this, Shark draws on its racing experience and feedback from the most advanced users in each category. Similarly, the FEA (digital crash tests) accompanies the company in the design of each new product to simulate the crash tests. It is complemented by the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), which allows a numerical optimization of the aerodynamics and the penetration into the air of the helmet. Shark manufactures and sells new models each year. Shark helmets are distributed by a network of over 5,000 sales outlets worldwide. Owned by its own factories, Shark manages the creation chain from start to finish. The brand can thus guarantee its products 5 years and offer helmets that meet the needs of all bikers.
